SAINT GEORGE IN EAST SUSSEX Back in 1894, the Royal Society of St George was formed, and Queen Victoria became its patron. Since then the reigning sovereign has been the patron, and early in her reign Queen Elizabeth granted the Society a Royal Charter. This not only gave extra dignity to the Society but also ensured that it remains apart from party political activities. So what is the Society for? Amongst its many aims is to promote St George’s Day as England’s National Day; then it may even eventually become a Bank Holiday. It also aims to ensure that the men and women from all walks of life who have contributed to England and the Commonwealth are not forgotten. These people came from the sciences, politics, the armed forces, from charitable works and those who had served and continue to serve humanity. These people are an inspiration to the young of today and our future. English history, in the opinion of many, is a subject that has been neglected over the years so it is a basic aim of the Society to revive interest in so much of our past, both good and bad. To this end branches of the Society celebrate significant dates, such as the Battle of Britain, Trafalgar and D-Day. There are well over 100 branches worldwide and in this part of East Sussex there is the Seahaven Branch whose area of interest is the whole of Lewes District with surrounding towns and villages. It was formed on 1st January 2010, and has just had its third anniversary. This strong branch meets for lunch or dinner every month, the most important event of all, of course, being St George’s Day each year. This year England’s National Day is being celebrated with a church service at St Andrew’s in Alfriston followed by a formal dinner in Dean’s Place Hotel to which anyone who loves England is invited. Membership is by recommendation and any man or woman who is English or any resident of England who was born elsewhere but wants to support the Society’s aims is welcome to join. The activities of the branch are governed by its AGM and then implemented by a committee. Although not a fund-raising charity, the branch spends its surplus monies on buying gifts for local worthwhile efforts. For example during the past year it has provided items for the Seaford Young Musical Theatre group, the Newhaven Squadron of the Air

4

Training Corps and the Seaford charity BASE. In previous years there have been many others to receive some benefit, such as the Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD), the local community radio SeahavenFM, the Seaford Lifeguards and the Starfish organisation, which provides help for stammerers. We all hope to see more flags of St George flying throughout each year and especially on St George’s Day. It is encouraging when we are told of more events such as church services, lunches and suppers being organised to celebrate the day. This year Bishopstone as well as Alciston and Selmeston are organising events which our branch is pleased to support. Members of the branch have also been invited to speak to Rotary, Probus and other local organisations about St George and our Royal Society. The Royal Society of St George is England’s leading patriotic organisation and we hope that everyone living in our country will see our aims and support us in what we do. We seek the fervour that the Irish have for St Patrick’s Day, the pride that the Scots show for St Andrew and the Welsh ability to promote their own St David. We seek to help preserve all the best of England, past and present, traditions and history, manners and chivalry and gain support for England’s National Day, St George’s Day each year on the 23rd April. Bob Peedle MBE, Chairman, Seahaven Branch, ‘The Royal Society of St George’.

THE Rotary Club of Seaford RYLA Changes Ashleigh’s Career Plans About a year ago Seaford Life Guard Ashleigh Gent was suggested as a possible candidate for the challenging annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. One year on, the sponsors, the Rotary Club of Seaford decided, to find out how she was getting on. Ashleigh, 18, was born in Brighton and lived in Newhaven until she was 16, attending Tideway School. The following year she studied at BHASVIC and volunteered as a Seaford Lifeguard and currently works as a swimming teacher in Brighton. Ashleigh is passionate about physical activities, especially water based-sports, and her aim was to train as a paramedic, but it was Peter Gwilliam of Seaford Lifeguards who recommended that she be considered as a RYLA candidate. She went on a one-week course and successfully gained her Youth Leadership Award at the Surrey Outdoor Learning Development Centre. She found herself in a group with 11 strangers, where shyness was not an option and communication was essential, but by the end of the week she was much more open-minded and understood the concept of teamwork in practice. With her greatly improved confidence Ashleigh has decided that paramedic is not the role for her and in September this year she will start an Outdoor Adventurous Activities degree course at Plumpton. We wish her well!

Dress Down Day at Newlands President Paul Vaesen and Past President John Owen recently paid a visit to Newlands School during their dress down day. President Paul opened procedures with a talk on Rotary and gave details on how our club supports the local community. John followed by giving an update on Rotary’s polio eradication programme “End Polio Now” three years after our last visit. He told the assembly that India is now polio-free and no case has been reported there for two years, proof that Rotary is able to help tackle the world’s most difficult health challenges. However, polio remains in

three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan – and John went on to give a slide show on “What is Polio?”. He concluded by thanking the students, who had dressed down, for their contributions for the day, each contributing £2 or £3 if the girls let their hair down. The students raised a magnificent £241.

Young Musicians Compete at Newlands School Where in Seaford can you hear solo performances by four young pianists, four guitarists, two drummers, a violinist, a flautist, and six vocalists all on the same evening? The answer is at Newlands School, if you were lucky enough to get a ticket for the second Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition. All the young people taking part were aged between 11 and 17 and either live or attend a school in Seaford. The competition aims to give them the experience of appearing in front of an audience and the chance to showcase their musical talent. The packed audience was treated to an evening of outstanding instrumental and vocal performances! The most difficult job fell to judges Margaret Darwall-Smith, Sue Richardson, and Pat White who had the task of deciding the top three prize winners., This year’s winner, who was also presented with the Colin Seymour Memorial Shield, was Hambel Goodchild, and the two runners up were Alyssa Mather and Alfie Dyer. Hambel will now go on to appear at the Seaford Young Mayor’s Awards on 10th April. There was also an additional encouragement award which was won by Beth Moore and all the competitors received commemorative certificates. The prizes were presented by Paul Vaesen, President of the Rotary Club of Seaford and Tula Dyer, Head of Newlands School. Thanking the judges, technical organiser from Sussex Events Ltd Adam Briggs, MC for the evening Damon Willer, and Newlands School, Paul said this was just one of the many ways in which the Rotary Club supports our young people. There were twice as many entries this year than last year’s competition, and it now looks to be a permanent fixture! Photos: top to bottom: Ashleigh Gent, Hambel Goodchild with President Paul Vaesen and Newlands School Dress Down Day.

I’ve always loved taking pictures but when I got my iPhone two years ago, photography became my hobby. I’m not trained in photography at all. I’m a primary school teacher and I I live in Seaford with my husband and our two young sons. I absolutely love taking pictures of Seaford. I think Seaford looks amazing whatever the season. The beach is our favourite place to be, especially on a windy day, and we have plenty of those here. We are perfectly positioned for sunrises and sunsets too. Seaford beach at 6 o’clock in the morning is beautiful and I’m lucky to live close by so I don’t have too far to go. I enjoy showing other people how I see Seaford, so having my pictures on the front cover of Seaford Scene is a privilege. All the photos are taken and edited with my iPhone 4. I like my pictures to be colourful, bright and cheerful. I use a variety of different apps to edit them; I have tried to use Photoshop but it’s very complicated! By using my phone I can take pictures and edit them in a spare 5 minutes during the day. I use my iPhone for my macro photography too and have a small, three-inone lens that attaches to my phone; it’s for wide angle, fish eye and macro. I’m fascinated by macro photography and it’s an area that I want to explore more. My iPhone gave me the opportunity to be creative with my pictures. I joined a photography community online called Instagram and it was there that I happened to meet a small group of Eastbourne photographers, from professionals to iPhone enthusiasts like myself. A few of us started to meet up once a month to chat about our love of photography. We started to call ourselves #ebphoto, because that’s the hash tag for our pictures on Instagram and Twitter. Our meetings have a very relaxed atmosphere and I have met so many inspirational people. We set ourselves

8

monthly challenges and also try to get together for photography trips, so the ones among us that actually know what they are doing can share their knowledge with those of us that don’t! As a part of #ebphoto I’ve been lucky enough to have unlimited access to Herstmonceux Castle at 5am on a summer’s morning. The sunrise was incredible and they now use one of my iPhone pictures as their cover picture on Twitter. The Seaford Gazette has used one of my pictures on its front page recently and a handful of my sunset and sunrise pictures have been chosen to precede the weather on Meridian News too. Our #ebphoto challenge this month has been Street Photography, not my usual type of photography but I’ve really loved it and also enjoyed learning something different. Last year, through Instagram, my pictures of Seaford were noticed by a woman who lives in Seaford, Melbourne. She asked if she could use my pictures on her blog and she wrote all about our Seaford…their town is a bit less windy than ours and the beach is sandy! Through Instagram I have also made a friend in Seaford, New York and it was fun to compare our recent snow pictures! However, as much as I love my iPhone, I thought it was time to try something new and at Christmas I was given a Canon 450D DSLR camera. It’s a challenge learning how to use it but it my friends at #ebphoto are helping me out. So my photography journey is moving on - who knows where it may take me! If you would like to see more of my Seaford pictures you can find me on Facebook ‘Pictures by Sarah Sands’ or I’m ‘mrssandsy’ on Instagram, Flickr and Twitter.

Fitness For All We all have seen the statistics and know the importance of leading a fit and active lifestyle with regards to our own health and that of our nearest and dearest and so I won‘t bore you with the details.

Here are my seven golden rules for getting active:

As a personal trainer I am very passionate about fitness for all. However, I encounter a number of barriers that prevent many people from the benefits of leading a fit and healthy lifestyle on a daily basis. These include the following;

1. Do something

Lack of time l Lack of money l Negative perception of all exercise (boring, uncomfortable, expensive) l Lack of motivation l Lack of support from family and friends l Lack of confidence in their ability to be physically active l Fear of/previous injury l Lack of discipline l Lack of convenient access to amenities

2. Start Now

l

Look at the list and ask yourself how many of these excuses you have made to yourself to forgo participation in any given activity in recent memory. Really be honest. Now ask yourself if these points were really valid. Be honest. Of course it is overcoming these barriers that is the hardest part - getting started is always the most difficult part but once you’re up and running (no pun) there is no stopping you. I find that what underpins all of these barriers is that most people with low activity levels perceive becoming more physically active as being inaccessible. I am hoping I can demonstrate that achieving a more active lifestyle need not exclude anyone or cost a fortune by simply being creative and utilising what is at our disposal. I truly believe that there is also no substitute for a good attitude, hard work and perseverance. We are lucky enough to live in a truly beautiful part of the country which is blessed with natural resources aplenty, from The Seven Sisters to Friston Forest and Cuckmere Valley and I personally believe that these resources are much under used within the local community and so it has long been my mission to enthuse others to embrace what we have right on our very doorstep.

10

Anything. By doing something that raises your heart rate you are already doing far better than doing nothing at all, so don’t worry about how small you start, get going and stay with it. Don’t wait for holidays, new years, next week or next month, don’t put it off, today is the first day of the rest of your life so start now, as in TODAY!

3. Be Proactive Find out what is out there, whether it’s clubs, associations, societies, physical resources - go and discover what is available and if something isn’t available that you think should be then why not set it up yourself?

4. Find A Friend Whatever your chosen activity may be finding someone to enjoy it with you and to provide you with support is worth its weight in gold; that is why clubs and classes often work so well. The camaraderie that we get from each other is often what really makes the activity

5. Pick Something You Enjoy Only you know what you will and more importantly will not enjoy, so by all means be open to trying new activities but by doing something you know you’ll enjoy you are much more likely to stick at it. It is this perseverance that will have you on the road to leading a fitter and healthier lifestyle in no time at all.

6. Challenge Yourself Have a goal in sight. whether it be training to compete in a race, charity challenge or something much more modest, your goal is your own as is your journey. Be careful and pick something that is both challenging but achievable then break it down into a series of mini targets that will motivate you to continue your journey.

7. Persevere Do not give up unless you get injured or become ill. Stick with your regime at all costs. Perseverance is the key - just ask the Tortoise! Always consult your GP before undertaking any new physical activity. Richard Brown, Personal Trainer.

Running Commentary... Many runners who race regularly are now seeking out quirky or extreme races, character-building puddles and pain challenges or simply events that offer something just a little bit different. It might be merely a new route through beautiful, iconic countryside or an event that demands more of you than just your running skills. Although it is good to pick out races that offer the chance of a PB now and again, like the Hastings 5 miles or the Worthing 10km, which are both flat and well-organised, it is vital for the sanity of your brain and legs to tackle races that captivate more than just your desire to run faster or further than before. The King’s Head Canter, for instance, is a 5km race in August that takes you along quiet country lanes between Chiddingly and East Hoathly, and having completed it, you swap your race number for a pint in the Pub, which is all of 5 metres from the finishing line. In mid Wales, an event that’s been going for several decades is the unique Race The Train Challenge. Runners have to race against the Talyllyn Mountain Railway train, which is timetabled to complete the 14.5 miles course in exactly 1hr 45mins, while the carriages are full of spectators. Whether they are cheering you on… or trying to beat you, serves only to enhance this amazing

Nikki Bond School of Dance

race even more. In recent months, this column has touched on some of the mud-and-torture races to be found in Sussex, and fortunately, this type of race is on the increase. Then there’s the 5-mile Beach Run near Middleton in West Sussex in June, where you have wait until the tide goes out before the race can begin as most of the course is on the foreshore. There are also marathons that require you to be able to complete the route by following written instructions and perhaps a map rather than having marshals to guide you at every turning point. It is also beneficial for runners to vary their training runs too, not just in the distance they cover but also where they run and the type of terrain they run on. If you intend running throughout the year… and year after year, it’s even more important to be creative in your approach to the running you do. A dull training regime kills the spark that got you running in the first place. I’d love to hear from Seaford Scene readers of other races that offer something different… and also, what you look for in a race. Has anybody previously run the Bluebell 10km near Angmering, West Sussex? It’s on again this month, on the 21st. It’s mainly off-road and hilly but the thought of running through a bluebell wood on a bright, sunny, Spring morning sounds irresistible. Also this month, if bluebells don’t chime with you, perhaps the Warrior Run, just north of Brighton, on the 28th might appeal. Advertised as the toughest obstacle and mud run in the South you will need to be ultra stubborn and not fazed by the impossible. Whatever running you do this month, let it extend your horizons and further boost your feelgood factor, and when you’ve pushed the boundaries of your comfort zone and sought out the limit of your capabilities… will you be faced with a high brick wall… or a door? A Londoner by birth, she moved South in 1987 and fell in love with the Sussex landscape and especially Seaford’s beach and coastline. She finally moved to Seaford from Newhaven last autumn and lives in a seafront flat with views across the bay. Rosie tuned into the spiritual magic of Seaford, and in addition to yoga she leads & attends local meditation groups. She has also taught on four yoga holidays in Spain over the last three years and in 2012 took a group to West Crete, which was so beautiful she is returning there this year. The Peli is a quiet family-run hotel with spacious accommodation and a large pool. It is situated just two minutes’ walk from an equally quiet sandy beach and 10 minutes from the local small town, with its variety of shops. Our hosts from West Crete Holidays are happy to arrange sightseeing to other parts of the island, boat trips, and to lead hill walks to take in the views. Rosie teaches Vajrasati yoga, which was founded in 2000 by Buddhist-influenced Jim Tarran who was originally an Iyengar Yoga teacher. He developed a softer, more individual practice, to reveal the essence of yoga and ultimately release the full potential of our humanity, an internal, local connection with ‘intuitive intelligence’. Rosie’s teaching therefore focuses on using the breath and she encourages students to work meditatively, listening closely to their own bodies and breath, and using their inner resources to develop postures only as the body allows, and without grasping. The classes are therefore deeply enriching and great fun!

Seaford Kurlers Hey look folks, we have made it through to April! Spring is on its way and here’s hoping it will be a good one. We deserve some warm sunshine - time to get fit for those long hot summer holidays. Lots of exercise will sort that one out!! Don’t go too mad and pull those poor old muscles. If you do, you will have a long way to travel for physiotherapy help. Seaford no longer has a day hospital with physio services. So take care! Seaford Scene readers will recall that Seaford Kurlers were fortunate to receive money from the Seaford Choral Sciety’s retiring collection from the production of The Messiah that was performed at St. Leonard’s Church on 1st December, 2012. This money enabled us to donate a set of kurling equipment to the Bradbury Centre (Seeability) as shown in the photo below. Mike Roberts, the chairman of the Seaford Choral Society was also able to attend and see where the money has been spent whilst a number of the centre members were able to try the equipment out. They were all very enthuisiastic. Why not come along to the Downs Leisure Centre and see Seaford Kurlers in action? We can offer you exercise,

companionship and a good social scene. The sport is played on a badminton court and is a good way of doing those stretching and bending exercises. It does not matter how unfit you are, we can help. We can cater for most levels of mobility. The game can be as competitive as you want it to be. We run a yearly in-house tournament for the more competitive players.Whilst at the Leisure Centre, have a look at what they offer. They have recently had new facilities added. It is a good friendly centre – give it a try. Seaford Kurlers also have a social life and we arrange outings to places of interest. Out next trip is to Portsmouth on April 11th. We will be transported there by coaches that we hire from ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). The coaches are fully adapted to take people in wheelchairs. We are affiliated to ESDA and are able to take advantage of their services and advice. They can be contacted at 1 Faraday Close, Eastbourne, BN22 9BH. Tel. 01323 514500 www.esda.org.uk Seaford Kurlers meet every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm at the Downs Leisure Centre, with a break for refreshments. Your first visit is free, thereafter it is £2.50 per session. There is an annual membership fee of £5.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH It is well documented that one in four of us may suffer mental distress at sometime during our life. Whether someone is experiencing anxiety and stress, depression, addiction, phobias, panic attacks or trauma, having some understanding about these conditions can often help. I hope therefore that this series of articles each month will enhance understanding of these distressing conditions, starting with “Stress”. STRESS Stress results from a build-up of mental and/or physical pressures to a level that we find overwhelming. The amount and type of stress we can stand will vary from individual to individual – for instance, one person may get a buzz from giving a talk to hundreds of people whereas someone else will be a nervous wreck in similar circumstances. We may all have to go through different stresses in a lifetime – such as bereavement, job loss, relationship breakdown, serious illness, or the demands of caring for children or sick relatives. We have to cope with challenging life changes, such as leaving home for the first time, taking on new responsibilities at work or settling down with a new partner. Even when these are pleasant developments, they can still take a mental and physical toll on us. When lots of little stresses and some big ones happen in a short period of time, we may lose our ability to cope well. If we feel defeated by all we have to do, and lack drive and energy, that is stress. Stress is the modern-day effect of an evolutionary mechanism known as ‘fight or flight’, designed to save our distant ancestors from dangers in the wild. For instance, when under physiological stress, our muscles may tense, blood pressure soar, the heart race and the chest hurt, as breathing becomes shallow and quick; saliva may dry up and we might sweat and shake. When these bodily changes took place for our ancestors, it was because they faced a major threat, such as a wild boar attack, and they needed to gear up to run for it or to fight for their lives. Once they had taken action, and survived, all the physiological arousal would quickly subside. But in modern times, it is rarely a wild boar that makes us feel threatened. More often, it may be an overdemanding boss or not having enough control over our work (stress is now the most common cause of

18

long-term sickness absence) or the demands of taking a sick relative to regular hospital appointments while trying to hold down a full-time job. The stress doesn’t end and so the physiological effects don’t ebb. That’s why we get physical symptoms from severe stress, such as disturbed sleep and ailments such as frequent migraines, backache, angina, skin eruptions, bowel problems, stomach cramps or high blood pressure. And we commonly feel highly anxious or depressed. All these symptoms are warnings that important emotional needs are not being met (maybe our lives feel lonely, too demanding or meaningless) and that something has to change, to bring the harmful stress levels down. To lower stress levels, human givens practitioners can show people how to relax and encourage people to find ways to reduce their stress. Psychotherapy from the human givens approach combines proven therapeutic techniques with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge to relieve emotional distress and help you move on with your life as quickly as possible. Next month the focus will be on “Anxiety”. Lynda Bryer (HGDip) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. If you feel you or a loved one needs support contact Lynda on 01323 897287, or email lynda3hg@hotmail. com

Seaford Medical Practice Patient Participation Group Public and Patient involvement in the NHS The Patient Participation Group (PPG) for Seaford Medical Practice has been in existence now for just over a year. The group was started following a Department of Health initiative to encourage GPs to involve patients, on a voluntary basis, in the operation of their services. Members of the group act as a communication channel between the practice and the community in order to help patients use facilities to the best advantage and for the practice to implement policies influenced by representative patient views. We have a suggestion box and notice board in the waiting room with our newsletters and minutes of past meetings.

‘Who Let The Dads Out?’ is a parents and toddler group, but is specifically for fathers, grandparents or male carers and their preschool children. Launched in Seaford in December 2012 at Seaford Baptist Church, the monthly session is a place where dads can have the opportunity to get some quality time with their children, have fun and chill out. We have bacon butties, coffee, and there are plenty of toys and games to play and a different craft each month for the children and dads to get involved with together. This has quickly grown popular with over 10 dads and 17 children attending in February. This is an excellent opportunity for dads to connect with each other and build community, have some quality time with the children while having fun. This group is a winner to everyone involved, and whether it is to chill out, build community or simply to give mums a little time off, ‘Who Let The Dads Out’ is guaranteed to be a popular time, both with the children and their dads or carers as well as giving mums some time too. Why not check it out? 9.30am -11.30am, Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN252EE 2nd Saturday of the month Who let the Dads out? We did!

The group aims to represent the practice population in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and mobility. At the time of writing we are actively seeking one male and one female member from the 16-40yr age group. We meet approximately every two months on a Saturday morning in the Health Centre. If you are in this age group and interested in joining we would be very keen to hear from you. Please email smpppg@yahoo.co.uk with your details. We decided at the outset that we needed to know the views of patients on the services the practice provides, and how easily or not patients can access those services, so we carried out a patient survey. The survey took place over two weeks in January 2012. The survey was analysed and an action plan for the forthcoming year was agreed between the practice and the PPG. Overall, there was a very positive response and some very positive comments were made about the practice staff and the services offered. However, there were also areas of weakness and throughout the past year the PPG and the practice have been working hard to bring about improvements. Full details of the survey, the resulting action plan and the improvements made are available on the practice website www. seafordmedpractice.gpsurgery.net. The PPG carried out another survey in January 2013 and again some very positive comments were made. However, again areas were identified for improvement, for which an action plan has been agreed for implementation during 2013. This too is displayed on the practice website www.seafordmedpractice. gpsurgery.net. A common theme from both surveys is about having to queue at reception to make appointments, collect prescriptions or for general enquiries. We aim to help improve this situation by reducing the queues. To do this, members of the PPG will be in the waiting room at peak times for two weeks from 15th April. We will be collecting information from patients and, where we can, suggest better ways of accessing the services or dealing with prescriptions. We will also be handing out copies of the new practice brochure which contains full details of all the services offered by the practice and how to access them Please help us to help you by giving us your comments and suggestions. Together we can bring about improvements where they are needed. You can write to The Chairman of the PPG at the practice, leave written comments in the suggestion box or email smpppg@ yahoo.co.uk

what’s on at the hop? ‘I Remember, Or Do I?’ by Brenda May Saturday 30th March to Sunday April 7th Mon - Sat 10.30am - 4pm, Sun 12noon - 4pm. Brenda May became interested in movement and form during her first career as a dancer, while her later work as a clinical psychologist combined with years of parenting established a strong interest in the complexities of life’s experiences. These inspirations led to a degree in Fine Art, followed by a postgraduate diploma in Printmaking. Using an intuitive creative process, Brenda’s twodimensional works are mainly acrylic paint on paper, card wood or canvas, sometimes augmented by collage, found objects, wire or wood., her three-dimensional pieces using similar materials. This exhibition evokes scattered memories of houses that have been important to her, from frost patterns on windows to her father playing on the pianola. The images explore the unreliable accuracy of memory; they are reconstructions of hazy memories, displaced by time and the process of painting itself.

‘Catching My Imagination’ by Gaylord Meech Saturday 13th to Thursday 25th April Mon - Sat 10.30am - 4pm, Sun 12noon - 4pm, closed Mon. Born in the USA, Gaylord Meech has been fascinated since childhood with the power the visual arts have over the human imagination. He immersed himself in studying the human form at Syracuse University, and advanced techniques of drawing, colour, printmaking, sculpture and photography under Josef Albers at Yale.

Gaylord has lived in England for over 40 years, exhibitiing many times in Sussex. ‘Catching My Imagination’ is an exciting new collection of paintings, in which the two worlds of animal and human figures and faces are explored from contrasting perspectives. Sometimes dynamic, sometimes still, the paintings celebrate the rich variety of the life that is always around us.

‘Art Trouvée’ by JanaNicole Saturday 27th April to Thursday 9th May Tues - Sat 10.30am - 5pm, Sun 12noon - 5pm, clsoed Mon. JanaNicole is an American artist who lives at Whitestacks in Wilmington, a curious property that began life as a village school. The pavillion in the garden is her studio, and it is here amongst the architecture and her collection of chickens, that wander freely around the grounds, that the inspiration for her new collection of paintings came about - recognising the extraordinary character of chickens. ‘These commonplace creatures are often considered more appealing as a lean meat than the handsome, beautiful, intelligent and charismatic creatures they really are’. JanaNicole trained at the California University of Northridge and the American College of Fine Art in London. She specialises in acrylic on canvas.

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD & SURROUNDING AREA April With the arrival of April comes the promise at last of warmer weather and longer daylight hours. The countryside at this time of year comes alive with flowers, young birds and insects including more butterflies. The butterfly species that started to emerge in March increase in numbers throughout April and from the middle of the month several new species show for the first time. On the sunny slopes of the Downs Grizzled Skippers can be seen. This is one of the smallest of our butterflies and they can appear from early April on the warmer south facing slopes where they fly fast and low over the short turf. The butterflies emerging on the cooler north facing slopes can be 2 to 3 weeks later. The slightly larger, duller and more common Dingy Skipper also starts to emerge in April, normally a week or so

later than the Grizzled Skipper. Both these butterflies are often confused with day-flying moths as they are quite furry and they fly fast like moths. Good local places to look for both these species are around the outskirts of Friston Forest, High and Over, Cradle Valley and Bo Peep. From the middle of the month Green Hairstreaks can be seen flying around bushes. Mainly on the Downs but also in sunny spots on the edges of woodland, this small butterfly always settles with its wings closed showing just the underside of their wings, which are green in colour. This camouflage means it is often overlooked by the casual observer. The males are very territorial and often fly up to investigate any passing insect before returning to its favoured bush. Although this butterfly is never common, it is widespread and can appear almost anywhere. Good local areas however do include the scrub between Belle Tout and Beachy Head as well as around the gorse bushes on Seaford Head Golf course. The Pearl Bordered Fritillary in the 1970s was found in many of our broad-leaved woodlands, however, in the last 20 to 30 years the species has suffered a major loss and disappeared from all its former haunts in East Sussex. Fortunately the species is still found in good numbers in woodland near Arundel. In 2004 butterflies from the Arundel wood were released in Abbotts Wood in a bid to bring the butterfly back to East Sussex. With careful management work carried out by the Forestry Commission the introduction has proved to be extremely successful with the butterfly now being found in several areas of the wood and during the latter part of April and throughout May this delightful butterfly can be seen flying strongly along the woodland rides. For more information on local butterflies including recent sightings and how you can help butterflies and other wildlife visit www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk Bob Eade Photos clockwise from left: Green Hairstreak, Pearl Bordered Fritillary, Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper.

Seaford Silver Band Spring Concert This year the Band’s Spring Concert will be on Sunday 14th April at 7pm at Seaford Head Upper School Theatre in Arundel Road, Seaford. The programme should appeal to all ages with pieces ranging from arrangements of a Mozart melody to up-to-the-minute music from the cinema screen. This year there is the added attraction of pupils from Seaford Primary School Choir who will give a vocal contrast to the Brass Band sound. They have recently performed in the Schools’ Concert at the O2 Arena in London. A donation to the School’s Music Department will be made from the proceeds of the concert. We also welcome back Donald Brown, Bagpiper, who will play a well-known Scottish melody. The Band was formed shortly after the Great War as a brass and reed Band, similar to a modern Military or Concert Band. It was disbanded during the Second World War and restarted at the end of 1944 by a retired member. At the beginning a group of youngsters shared one French Horn! It was at this point that our President, John White, joined the Band. He will be playing in April! At the end of the ’40s the Band changed to its current Brass Band format and over the years has performed at countless venues in and around Seaford, in France and in Germany, at our Twin Town, Bönningstedt and its Twin Town Crivitz.

SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY Come and join us - we start our 2013 season of outdoor meetings on 2nd April with a stroll near Blatchington Golf course to look for spring flowers. On 23rd April we are going to Hertsmonceux to look for Bluebells and possibly the much rarer Spring Beauty we spotted there last year. Our outdoor meetings are gentle walks usually lasting about two and a half hours. They generally take place on Tuesdays – see the listings in Seaford Scene for details. We look forward to seeing our current members and welcoming visitors and prospective new members on these walks. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation. Seaford Natural History Society has been going for 53 years now - we are a friendly group, with some members who are great experts in various aspects of natural history and others who are novices keen to learn about plants, birds and insects in our lovely Sussex countryside. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org. uk or ring 01323 491964.

Out and about in April April is a glorious time to be out in the countryside - it feels like everything is springing into life. It’s lovely to be outside and more enjoyable still if you can identify some of the wildlife around you. Predicting what will be seen in April, however, is a perilous business – it all depends on the weather. But the Blackthorn bushes should be developing their white blossom, Early Purple Orchids will be beginning to appear and with a bit of luck we’ll see Cowslips by the roadside between Burling Gap and Beachy Head.

The spring bird migration has already started by April and the first half of the month is often quite quiet. During the second half, however, the migration will be in full swing and the dawn chorus is often reaching its peak. Look out for the first Common Swift around the middle of the month. For many, however, the most impressive spectacle is simply the sheer number of birds passing over this part of the coast – although whether they actually stop to feed and rest on Seaford Head and the Lower Cuckmere depends entirely upon the weather because a southerly wind and clear skies overnight encourage incoming passerines to pass straight over our part of the coast as they rapidly make their way inland to favoured breeding locations. The second half of the month is also an exciting period for sea watchers, particularly given a steady wind from the south or south-eastern quarter. In these conditions the passage of Great and Arctic Skuas passing Splash Point can be extremely impressive. On a more sombre note, keep an eye out for Ash trees. They are in bud and flower in April and are usually another welcome sign of spring but this year they are a reminder of the threat of ash dieback disease (chalara fraxinea). According to the Forestry Commission, the disease has reached East Sussex. The infected trees are in the wider countryside rather than in tree nurseries and well to the north of here – so far (25 February 2013) there have been no sightings near the coast. Still, we need to be alert to the signs of ash dieback – stem discolouration (healthy olive brown stems which change to purple and brown) and diamond-shaped lesions are the things to look out for at this time of the year. If you would like more information on ash trees and ash dieback, visit the Forestry Commission’s website at http://www.forestry.gov.uk/chalara or look out for leaflets on the subject. Arts@thecrypt, Seaford’s Crypt Gallery in Church Street is becoming well known locally for exhibitions and cultural events. In the last year we have hosted art and photography exhibitions, children’s events, poetry and literary evenings, a Christmas Craft Fair, and recently a talk about Farley Farm where Lee Miller the famous war photographer lived. We have a thriving Friends group with details and membership forms as well as up-to-date information about events, all availableon our new website: thecryptgallery.com or can be found at the Tourist Information Office in Church Street. Anyone wishing to hire all or part of the Crypt can contact Gemma on 01323 894870. Our next event is on Saturday 20th April from 10.30 1pm. This will be an owl-themed exhibition in association with Wise Books, Seaford latest book shop run by Giles Paley-Phillips and others. The shop supports the charity Family Support Work (FSW) and their logo is an owl. Giles has recieved many paintings, drawings and collages of owls and we think it will be fun to exhibit them and to have some owly activities for children! We hope people will join us for a coffee and the chance to see how many talented people there are in Seaford. We will also have Friends membership forms available. We hope to see you there.

Their Musical Director, Maeve Jenkinson, formerly first violinist with the London Philharmonic, has recently moved to Seaford. Since she became Musical Director in 2009, the Corelli Ensemble have expanded their repertoire from Baroque music, to include Classical, Romantic and Modern. The Corelli Ensemble’s concert series in Lewes and Brighton are very popular, and have been met with audience comments such as: “the performance of the Tchaikovsky was quite exhilarating”. They are supported by their President, Lord Denis Healey, who attends all of their concerts at the ripe old age of 95! On Sunday 28th April, at 4pm in St Thomas More Catholic Church, Sutton Road, Seaford, the Corelli Ensemble will be performing a programme of Russian Music, including Stravinsky’s charming “Pulcinella Suite” from his ballet of the 1920s, the spellbinding Romance from Shostakovich’s “The Gadfly”, and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful “Serenade for Strings”. Review

Titfield Thunderbolt

Friday 15th - Saturday 23rd February 2013

In the great tradition of the classic Ealing Comedies, Philip Goulding’s adaptation of the much-loved film to a stage play presented an enjoyable evening of warm good humour and insight into the variety of characters in a rural community. Set in 1952 it is a story of villagers rallying around to run their own branch line when it is threatened by closure, despite the best efforts of wily competitors and the red tape of Transport Ministry officialdom. In this production Director Margaret Kennedy and the backstage staff should be highly commended for their inventive use of space in the auditorium and evocative use of sound effects, stagesmoke, lighting and excellent set to create a wonderful

experience for the audience. It must be said that the audience played their role too, as an aspect of the staging required the audience to participate as either bus or train passengers and for some to act as water carriers to help build up the head of steam at the end of the play. The charm and wit of the play were brought to life by the enthusiastic and versatile cast, most of whom played two roles and all of whom were convincing in their characters. With stand-out performances by Mike Piller playing both the conniving would-be bus company mogul ‘Vernon Crump’, and the local gentleman bon vivant and drunk ‘Mr Valentine’, and also Roland Boorman as train-enthusiast ‘Reverend Sam Weech’, and officious councilman ‘Mr Blakeworth’. Both actors were well-matched alongside the characters of ‘Joan Weech’, played with just the right mix of steely determination and charm by Jenny Humphries and the forceof-nature character of ‘Lady Edna Chesterford’ played with verve and wit by Angie James. Lee Powney brought a warm mirth to his roles as Vernon’s putupon son ‘Harry Crump’ and the stiffly backboned ‘Sergeant Wilson’, both of whom ‘took a shine’ to the delectable barmaid Joan Weech – but only Harry won her heart in the end. Phil Armstrong gave strong performances in his roles as ‘Mr Ruddock’ and ‘Mr Clegg’ – the latter being the ‘Man from the Ministry’ who seemed to take too much note of the saucy ‘Miss Coggett’, played with a wiggle and a wink by Andrea Lowe, who made the right decision in the end to uphold the dreams of the village and let them run their own beloved branch line. Sue Shephard, as ‘Mrs Bottomley’ and Martin Adams as good-old ‘Dan Taylor’, and David Heathcote as ‘Clifton’ rounded out the rest of the superb cast line-up. The audience had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed yet another brilliant show by The Little Theatre. By Gerrie Purcell

Seaford Community Garden

Feeling fruity One of the many useful aspects of a community garden is the opportunity it gives to exchange ideas, and when Katie came up with the notion of growing and training a couple of new apple trees using the step-over technique we were intrigued. The great advantage, she told us, is that you don’t need a large amount of space in which to harvest a good quantity of fruit. These new trees will be in addition to our existing fruit collection of an unnamed apple tree and pear tree, which bear tasty fruits, two plum trees, which hopefully will be big enough to fruit this year, and a blackcurrant bush; we have also recently bought another rhubarb, pickings from our existing plant being very popular when the rosy-pink stalks make their appearance at the sales table behind the gates of the garden at The Crouch. Climbing fruit like blackberries and raspberries recently underwent a timely prune ready to take advantage of some fine carpentry by Dan who is building some robust and good-looking supports from which baskets can be hung later on. He also has plans for much-needed staging and for building raised beds for wheelchair users; thanks to Paul at Seahaven Lions for his practical advice on this. Right now Richard, our youngest volunteer, is watching the wildlife pond with an eagle eye for first sight of the tadpoles and insects that thrive in this little oasis. He is planning to leave us with a chart explaining the pond life when he leaves us to go to Plumpton College, a gift that will give particular pleasure to James, our longest-serving volunteer – yes James, you deserve a medal – who built and planted the pond and has always maintained it. Another Jan has joined us, bringing with her a wealth of

horticultural experience, all the more appreciated because most new members are just beginning to discover the joys of gardening. Speaking of which, we hope to put on some courses for beginners who want to learn different gardening skills. Our daffodils were very popular and quickly sold out, but some tulips are still available. Meanwhile, a few weeks back we planted up 100 pelargonium plugs and these will be on sale as soon as they are hardy enough, to brighten up everyone’s pots, baskets and beds. At the time of writing we have lots of green shoots in our veg beds, produce from which will be picked fresh for you to buy each Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm, so do drop in, not just to purchase but to see what we get up to and to pitch in with your ideas too. We look forward to giving you the grand tour. The Garden Team Photos: An apple, good enough to eat and Dan’s the man for carpentry

spring bulbs beginning to show their colour and the days For all your are drawing out – gardening so is spring justneeds: round the corner? We all hope so, as it has been a very cold, drab Winter. • Hard and Soft Landscaping

• Garden Design Our speaker for the February meeting, Geoffrey Mead, • Turfing gave us a very interesting talk entitled ‘Sussex on the • Fencing / Decking Rocks’. He took us on a geological journey of the Sussex countryside from the Work north east to the south west, ending • Tree / Hedge on the coastal strip from Chichester to Rye. The different • Patios / Driveways Weald areas consist of various soils varying from fine sand • General Garden Works to heavy clay. The coastline is mostly chalk and flint; there are still iron deposits to be found in Ashdown left ease call 01323 811834 / 07752 55 Forest, 39 39 from the days when workings existed, and clay areas in Email jonny@limelandscapes.co.uk Hartfield woods from the pottery industry days. Hop farms www.limelandscapes.co.uk still exist for producing one of the main ingredients for beer making. On poorer soil near Hellingly there is a large chicken farm housing 3,000 birds in one massive shed. Luckily, they are free-range during the day but like the shelter from bad weather (and predators!) at night time. The Rye area has several fruit farms, but a large sandpit type soil near Washington is not good for growing much at all! The Devil’s Dyke area is ideal for sheep grazing but not arable farming. Coming back along the coastline we pass the Cuckmere valley, Camber Sands (with its majestic sand dunes) and the Pevensey Levels which are wonderful for their bird life, wild flowers and peace and quiet. So much information to take in and make notes on but Geoffrey kept members and visitors interested for over an hour. Certainly, a speaker to invite back in the future. Our 2013 outings programme is now available – please phone Anne for more information. Non-members are more than welcome to join us. We are to visit Down Place in April and Charts Edge Garden in May, plus three later venues. Our next talk on Wednesday, 24 April, will be by Mrs Amanda Millar at 7.30 pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford. The subject will be ‘Working with Bats’ – a very informative talk. Please use the entrance door opposite Tesco’s. Visitors are more than welcome for a fee of £2 or you can join for a yearly fee of £10 – there are no extra entry charges. Refreshments are available, with a raffle several times in the year. Do come and join us for an enjoyable evening in pleasant company – you will not be disappointed. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or go to the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

Market Movements versus Garden Improvements

“It’s about being there to do what other people find difficult. I find that they save up things for my weekly visit. Now I’m looking forward to lawnmowing season.” Ultimately though, the business is a gardening (not landscaping) business and it is in the garden where Ian is in his element. His attention to detail is impressive - it would be impossible for him to walk away without trimming and finishing the edges of the lawn. This added value is what helps him stand out from others.

With 25 years of financial services under his belt, it would be fair to assume that Ian was getting ready to start winding down. On the contrary, he has made the decision to change direction entirely and fulfil his ambition to work outside. Like his grandfather before him, Ian has always had a passion for gardening, especially his lawn.

So, how is Ian going to prove that he is better than it says on the tin? “I’m offering new customers their first hour for free! All they have to do is book their first two-hour slot and I will come along and show that it is value for money.”

All Seasons Gardening was set up to offer something different; “When I spoke to people, I found that they were paying one person for their lawn mowing, another for the back-breaking digging and weeding, another for clearance and tidying and Interestingly, over 80% of Ian’s new business has yet another if they wanted lawn care. On top of come from customer referrals, which is extremely this, if they wanted something else like a few repairs encouraging. to a shed or fence, they had to pay someone else for their time.” Ian’s thoughts were that this was Introductory Offer simply uneconomical and that savings could be Book 2 hours and get the made by having one person who was willing to first hour FREE! do everything relating to the garden.

(First visit only)

He prefers to work in two-hour slots, which allows his clients to plan ahead. Since starting the business (in the middle of the winter) Ian has found himself clearing gutters, fixing fences, planting bulbs and even washing fascias and soffits. No gardening today Dad!

“We have been delighted with Ian’s work. He is always punctual and will turn his hand to anything. We are looking forward to being the envy of our friends come the summer when our grass will look as good as his.” Mr and Mrs Merritt, Seaford 70

Green Waste Recycling Service

As a teenager I was the lucky recipient of an annual pass for two to my local Odeon where with my best friend I misspent my youth in a market town with virtually no other entertainment. Now this same city regularly hosts well-known musicians but the lovely art deco, deeply carpeted emporium of talking pictures is a Weatherspoons fronting a bingo hall; hard to imagine weeping hot romantic tears over ‘Midnight Cowboy’, and ‘The Great Gatsby’ there today. “Wait”, you are saying “surely Midnight Cowboy was released long before Gatsby?” and you would be correct, except of course this is long before video tapes or DVDs, not to mention the various ‘on-demand’ sources of film we have today. So it was quite usual for the programme to include older films of note. Despite the multitude of ways to access films today, none of them can replicate the communal act of sitting in a cinema and sharing the experience of film. I bet everyone else in the cinema was crying with me and it didn’t matter that the film was five years old. When we choose films for Seaford Community Cinema we are essentially offering the same experience, a cinema at the heart of the community and a hand-picked programme of recent films of merit. We hope our audience agrees but if not, please let us have suggestions for your community cinema via the website “http://www.seafordcinema.org” Tickets from our website, on the door or from Seaford Tourist Information Centre, Church Road.

SEAHAVEN LIONESS CLUB

After a quiet couple of months through the depths of winter the Lionesses are now geared up for a busy season of fundraising:

Saturday Stalls The Saturday morning bric-a-brac stalls in Tansley’s Yard, off Broad Street, will be starting as soon after Easter as the weather allows. Do look out for us while you are doing your weekend shopping.

Lioness Awareness Coffee Morning If you would like to learn a bit more about what Lionesses do and why they do it come along and have a cup of coffee with us at the Old Plough, Church Street on Thursday morning, 11th April, any time between 11am and 1pm. We will have photos etc of the Club’s activities and information about the wider world of Lions and Lioness Clubs. You will be put under no pressure to join – we would just like more people to understand what we are about. However, if you would like to see more at one of our regular meetings you will, Page of course, be most welcome.

Charity Quiz On Friday 19th April we are having a Charity Quiz at the Downs Leisure Centre. It will start at 7.30pm and finish at about 10pm. Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased from Stephen Newberry Estate Agents in Church Street or from Lioness Pat on 01323 894085.

Barn Dance On Friday 8th March the Seaford Constitutional Club rang to the sound of fiddles and fancy footwork as the Lionesses hosted a Barn Dance with the Band Ded Efnik. The band and caller did a fantastic job and everyone joined in with enthusiasm. The joy of Barn Dances is that you don’t have to be a great dancer and no-one minds if it all goes horribly wrong. You just do your best and have fun, which everyone seemed to be doing on Friday. The hundred or so people there helped us raise around £400.00 for Leo House at Home Children’s Hospice Service, which provides home visits and support by specialised nurses for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions, and their families. This was the first time the Lionesses had organised a Barn Dance, but hopefully it won’t be the last. Watch this space!

SCORING GOALS By B J Kibble

200 lines for my misplaced affections. I thanked him. I wanted to ask him for ten dollars -- I didn’t. 12.30pm. Gary has another brainstorm during lunch. I should stow away on a ship to Iceland, or hijack a bus to Iraq where it’s quiet. I thanked him. I’m feeling generous. I’m convinced that thanking everybody will force God into bringing an avenging angel upon Briscoe. He doesn’t, and as I’m lobbing a ball into the side of the goal net from thirty yards, Briscoe’s on the sideline. Face grim and contorted, he’s chewing something with a bone in it. I’d like to think it’s chicken, but it’s probably the remnants of some poor kid’s arm or leg. His sidekick, Oscar Lemming (his parents obviously had a natural instinct for animal similarities) was on tiptoes, big eyes wide. He smiled gleefully at me. He likes to watch a good fight. It’s on-the-job training for every bully’s apprentice. Chrissy waved from behind the goal. I pumped my chest up, threw my head back and waved like a hero on a podium. Heck, I’m suddenly worried about my stick insect legs in my large shorts. She doesn’t care. She thought all heroes were entitled to one drawback. The skinny Lemming bounded over. He clenched his puny fists, an attempt to look tough, but he couldn’t blow up an empty potato chip bag. “What do you want?” I snapped. “Billy’s upped the ante to twenty bucks.” “What!” His grin split his freckled face in two. “Not a problem, we trust.” Instead of the ball, I’m going to kick him. He seemed to read this. He backed off, turned, stumbled and then ran back to his keeper. Chrissy is now waving like a lunatic. I, of course, wave back like an all-action-hero. Huh, more like a maniac heading for the ER. Another precise kick and yet another ball glides into the top of the net. A confirmation that I’m better at soccer than dying. It’s good to be good at something. I want to play for the US team in the World Cup. Chrissy wants me to join the Marines, become an officer, win a crate of medals and live in a smart condo with two toy poodles--and her! Briscoe, on the other hand, wants me for dinner. 1.30pm. Gary’s final suggestion during Math class is supposed to be fail-proof. I will collapse and be carried off to the hospital earlier than planned. I asked him, quietly gnawing my bottom lip, what about tomorrow and the next day and so on? He shrugged and slipped another gobstopper in his ever-open mouth from a rustling bag under his desk. Mrs. Donnelley caught me delving in for one. Guess what? I got detention, but it was an extra hour’s reprieve from a beating. Perhaps Briscoe would have a sudden bout of amnesia or read a book about Mother Teresa during this precious sixty minutes. If I had the money, I’d buy him a copy.

8.00am. The bells rang loud and clear through the halls of Butte County Middle School. Billy Briscoe slammed me against the lockers outside classroom 5B. Spitting bits of onion ring, he whispered, “Ten dollars, Reed you slimy weed, or end of the day-out back.” He wiped saliva from his lips with his dirty shirt sleeve. “Then I’m gonna stomp your bones.” Today, he seems twenty-foot taller and wider than me. His boa constrictor fingers tightened around my skinny neck, choking away my short life. The trapped blood boiled in my head until I thought it would explode like a melon struck by a dumb-dumb bullet. “Okay okay. You’ll get your money.” When it comes to tackling a Big Foot, I’m no hero. Trouble was, I didn’t have the cash: worst was, I didn’t know how to get it. Gary Tate waddled up to me. My best friend grinned like he’d scoffed another box of doughnuts to widen his too-fat frame. He sniffed; he’s always sniffing as if he has a permanent cold. Gary could sniffle for an American gold medal at the Olympics, if he ever found time between snacks. He said, “Don’t worry about that creep. He’s a bag of wind.” “That bag of wind is going to flatten me.” “So what you gonna do, run?” I shook my head. “I ain’t losing face in front of Chrissy.” “Man, you won’t have a face when Briscoe’s finished. Pay the guy.” “With what?” Gary shrugged. “Will you lend me ten bucks?” He laughed from his sneakers up. “Yeah, right. I’m falling over them.” 10.00am. Morning break and I’m hiding in the bathroom. Billy Briscoe’s giant fists loom in my mind. I wanted to sign up for the witness protection program. I caught Melvin Grimmond at the door and tried to sell him my schoolbooks. Melvin was the thick-spectacled, studious looking nerd you’d think would buy dirt for a garden from a fast talking salesman. He wasn’t having it though. He told me - TOLD ME! - that nasties like Briscoe need cutting down to size. He said I should make a stand and land the first punch. I snatched his glasses and huffed on them, then planted them back on his egg-shaped head. He wandered off, feeling his way along the green tile wall with two thin, bonewhite hands. 10.30am. English. Chrissy Pasternack turned and grinned at me from the front of the class. She thinks I’m her hero. I am, but I’m also the strong silent type. Rescuing cats from trees is as dangerous as my life should get. She doesn’t know this yet. She has heard about the fight and is sure who’s going to win. To be continued... I know who’s not going to win, but I didn’t let it show in my daft smile. I tossed her a wink. Mr. Franks, the teacher, gave me Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers 80

Just Voices is a gem at the heart of Seaford. The group was formed a year ago and has grown naturally and beautifully into a choir at the centre of the community, where people come together and sing for the pure joy of it. There is no accompaniment, no music to read, Just (our) Voices, learning by ear and marvelling at the sound we create (a ‘Natural Voices’ approach). We sing in a circle so that we can hear ourselves and each other. The notes travel around it, as do the smiles and the laughter. There are many ‘tingle factor’ moments too! One singer remarked: ‘Where so much communication these days is on a superficial level, it is lovely to get together with people and simply sing.’ Songs are collected from all over the world and include the rich harmonies of Georgian music, the infectious rhythms of Africa and the lilting melodies of our own English and Celtic traditions. There is no audition for ‘Just Voices’, but you will need to be able to sing in tune. We meet on Mondays from 2pm to 3.30pm at St James’ Trust, Blatchington Road. The first session of the summer term will be on April 15th, and to celebrate our first birthday, it will be FREE to newcomers. Come along and join in! For further information, contact Monica on 07788 166173 or email: monmaloney@ googlemail.com

Seaford Museum needs Volunteers Your local museum is housed in the oldest and most distinctive building on our town’s seafront: Martello Tower No. 74. Constructed in 1810 as the last in a series of fortifications around Essex, Kent and Sussex it was a defensive fort supporting one large cannon to be used against Napoleon’s forces. Luckily, the French never came and in time the tower became successively a coastguard station, café and roller-skating rink and is now a museum. Those who have visited the Museum know that local and military history forms only part of the content. A cavalcade of domestic and social memorabilia of the 20th century makes up more than half of the displays, and together with tableaux of shops, a school room, and Victorian and wartime kitchens, provides a wider interest to both visitors and stewards. Membership, providing a regular magazine and free entry to the Tower, is only £5 per year. During the summer months the Martello Tower is open to visitors on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and on Sunday morning and afternoon. The Museum

is run entirely by volunteer members of the Seaford Museum & Heritage Society. To enable us to open we are looking for more volunteers to help with the stewarding. We normally have two stewards and a senior steward on duty. Stewarding initially involves meeting people and making them welcome, and is usually an enjoyable time. The welcome element is particularly important when manning the entrance desk and shop. There is no prior knowledge needed to become a steward – we all learn on the job and there is always a senior steward to deal with difficult queries. The average commitment is two hours per month but you can do more or less than this according to circumstances. If you think you might be able to assist with stewarding please phone Michael Staples on 01323 894893, who will be happy to arrange an introduction and training session. Michael Staples

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.
