Welcome
Welcome to the December issue of Seaford Scene, another year’s nearly over, where does the time go to? Still, ’tis the season to be jolly and so we shall be with a little help from Seaford Scene. Browse through the pages for Christmas gift ideas, how about getting that odd job finished before the guests arrive or perhaps treat yourself to some pampering (if it’s all getting too stressful, or simply because you’re worth it)? There are various festive events going on locally – Christmas fairs, open houses, craft markets, carol singing – see the what’s on pages for dates and venues, pages 106 - 107. Finally I’d like to wish you all – advertisers, organizations, contributors, deliverers and Seaford Scene readers – A Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Grand Raffle
The Rotary Club of Seaford’s Grand Raffle for 2013 raised a sum of just under £2000 for distribution to charities and worthy causes. Many thanks to members and friends who sold tickets, to all those who supported the raffle by buying tickets or making a donation, and of course to Morrisons for allowing their foyer to be used for ticket selling.
On Monday 28th October presentations were made at Morrisons to the lucky winners. The first prize of £500 went to Margaret Smorthit (above right), the runner up Ruth Willox received £100, (above left) and finally Mrs Morris (who was unable to attend the presentation) won £50. Margaret and Ruth also received a bouquet of flowers each courtesy of Tim Jeffery (above centre) Morrisons store manager.

Seaford Martello Rotary Club supports CTAS Seaford Martello Rotary Club provides support for many good causes at local, national and international level. The club’s main focus internationally has been working with a local charity called CTAS, which stands for Community Training Assistance & Support www.ctascharity.org.uk The Club has been working with Michele Spencer, the founder and driving force behind the charity, for over six years to directly aid developments in a region north of Pokhara, in Nepal. Every year it donates money to help the local people develop projects which improve their living conditions. The first project was to build a new water system to ensure that everyone had access to clean drinking water at all times. This was later dedicated to Claire Ivory, a Past President of the club who died in 2009. Since then the club have provided funds each year to CTAS, who have managed to improve the lives of many people in Nepal. Michele, who lives in Eastbourne, visits often to negotiate, plan and encourage the local committee who oversee the work. She returns to the Martello Rotary Club on a regular basis and updates them about the developments, together with photos, so they can see what has been happening. As well as help with water projects, the club has helped CTAS to provide nursery education and meals for the youngest children, the salary for a school teacher and help towards vital hospital equipment. Michele is an Honorary Member of Seaford Martello Rotary Club and was presented with a Paul Harris Award earlier this year for her amazing hard work and dedication to improve the lives of so many people in
16
this region of Nepal. Long may it continue! Photos top to bottom: CTAS installed a dhara place at the Asha Orphanage, and the children not only now have easy access to clean drinking water, but also a place to wash their utensils and clothes, as well as take a shower. CTAS installed a pipeline for 25 houses in the Nagen Tole village, and supplied a 1,000- litre plastic tank to hold the clean drinking water and buildt a water gathering place for some 150 people. The villagers no longer need to trek for nearly one kilometre up and down a steep slope to fetch (contaminated) drinking water from the river. CTAS were able to provide a much needed life-saving ventilator for one of the hospitals in Pokhara. This hospital benefits from the expertise of an English ICU manager, but lacked some vital equipment. The ventilator can be used in both the adult ICU and neonatal wards. In recognition of CTAS’s contribution the hospital will provide treatment free of charge to those who are too poor to pay for it. Rato Paiera Children’s Tiffin project. CTAS continues to provide daily tiffin (lunch) for approximately 40 children to ensure they receive a nutritious meal each day. The infants at Rato Paiera kindergarten continue to make excellent progress with drawing, writing and numeracy.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE BOTHERED? Seaford Community Partnership is a voluntary body working with local clubs, businesses, councils and other groups, who want to make Seaford a better place to live, work and enjoy life. We need your help to set our future efforts into priority order – and hear about your priorities too! What have we done so far? • Designed and Part-funded the Seafront Exercise Path and the Town Heritage Trail. •
Set up the Youth Forum and helped it raise the funding for the Green Gym on The Salts.
•
Held the Seafront Exhibition and Consultation last year when 800 of you – of all ages told us what changes you’d like to see on the Seafront.
•
Designed and set up the Seafront Beach Garden by West View.
•
AND now we’re working on these Seafront improvements, and on ways to bring more shoppers, more shops, more jobs, and more life into the town centre.
What can you tell us about what else you’d like done? Please complete our questionnaire and give us your ideas for: A. Health improvements e.g. minor casualty unit, consultant clinics. B. Transport improvements e.g. regular bus to DGH, seafront service, safe-cycle-routesto-schools, cycle paths, crossings. C. More seafront improvements e.g. more toilets, better access to sea, play areas, more shelters, Splash Point groyne more like a pier, indoor refreshments, entertainment area for bands and singers. D. Sports improvements e.g. skate park in north Seaford, public petanque pitch. E. Social improvements e.g. an on-line facility listing all clubs, societies, current events and urgent transport problems, to ease all our lives. F. Town centre improvements e.g. signage, seats, trees, pedestrian areas. G. Your priority idea: anything else you have wished for, for Seaford. Please tell us on the questionnaire or on line. We can take your views to the decision-makers for you!
Thank you. 20

WHAT’S ON AT THE HOP? Phil Duncan & Mohamed Hamid present The Sussex Arts Collective & Star Pottery Group Christmas Show 2013
“GOOD TIDINGS!” Saturday 30th November – Sunday 22nd December Open Every Day: Tuesday – Saturday 10.30am – 5pm; Sundays & Mondays 11am – 3pm. Open for Lewes Late Night Shopping on Thursday 5th December 6 – 8pm. Now a regular and eagerly anticipated event the Sussex Arts Collective’s Christmas exhibition returns to the HOP gallery once again this December. This year’s show, entitled “GOOD TIDINGS!” will undoubtedly follow in the footsteps of their previous highly successful shows: “Noel”, “Yuletide!” and Waes-Hael!” and their much praised Artwave 2013 summer show, “Festival!”, at the Arts@theCrypt gallery, Seaford. The Sussex Arts Collective in collaboration with the renowned Mohamed Hamid Star Pottery Group will present again some of the very best and most diverse work from over 30 local artists and craftspeople and concludes yet another year of outstanding art exhibitions staged at the HOP gallery. “Good Tidings!” will feature many of Sussex’s much loved and familiar local artists and craftspeople as well as a number of emerging talents showcasing outstanding skill in a range of media: from beautifully turned wood, jewellery, glass, textiles and ceramics, to fine art painting, printing and photography. As visitors have come to expect the work is always instantly appealing and very affordable. Many of the artists taking part in “Good Tidings!” will have taken part in various Open House exhibitions during the Brighton Art Festival, Eastbourne Festival, the Uckfield Art Trail, The Chiddingly Open Studios, Worthing Open Houses and Lewes District Artwave Festival. The Sussex Arts Collective was formed in 2006 by Phil Duncan to promote the work of members, build networks between local artists and provide good quality exhibition spaces in commercial and open house venues. In 2014 the “Collective” will be back for their fifth Christmas show at the HOP and their second summer show at the Art@theCrypt gallery.

The Royal Society of St George, Seahaven Branch
THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR COMMEMORATED Sixty-Six members and friends of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George gathered on Trafalgar Night, Monday 21st October, at Deans Place Hotel, Alfriston, to commemorate Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. The guest list included the Mayors of Telsombe Town, Peacehaven and Seaford – the Mayors of Lewes and Newhaven having sent their best wishes and apologies. The Newhaven unit of the Sea Cadet Corps also sent representatives. Two delightful events added to the occasion. Firstly, branch member Sharon Bewley changed status from a mother to a grandmother during the meal when she received a message that her daughter had just given birth to a baby girl. Next, Chief Petty Officer (Master at Arms) Eon Matthews from the Sea Cadets, a former regular member of the Royal Navy, now an adult instructor, had qualified for his Cadet Service Medal. Branch member, Lieutenant Commander John Owen, had been his first Commanding Officer when Eon joined the cadets as a lad in 1972 and made the presentation during the evening. Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, welcomed the guests. He started off by indicating the non-political status of The Royal Society of St George and its desire to preserve all

the best in England, past and present, its traditions and history, manners and chivalry and to support our Patron Saint’s Day on the 23rd April each year. The Immortal Memory was given by Captain Christopher Laycock, Merchant Navy (retired), who lives in Bishopstone. During his speech he outlined the life in the Royal Navy at the time of Trafalgar and the professionalism and skill of Admiral Lord Nelson during his life, leading up to his death on Monday 21st October 1805. Captain Laycock is well known in the area, having organised the Sea Sunday services at Bishopstone’s St Andrews Church. His impressive Merchant Naval service had started in 1966 as a deck cadet with a major shipping line and his last command was of the P & O Jetfoil passenger service from London’s Tower Pier to Ostend. The former teacher, now Seaford’s Town Crier and Sergeant at Mace, responded on behalf of the guests, and talked about his work representing the town. He ended with a tribute to The Royal Society of St George for its aims and objectives. A raffle organised by the President’s wife, Maeve Mabey, raised over £200, which will help with the Branch’s future gifts for local worthwhile projects and charities. The next function will be the Christmas Lunch to be held at the Inn on the Park at Deanlands on 10th December. For membership enquiries contact the chairman, Bob Peedle MBE on 01323 899985 or email to 514928@talktalk.net. The Mayors garden Trail We recently learnt, with sadness, that Seaford in Bloom has folded and as yet, it is uncertain whether a new trail will take it’s place. However, don’t despair! The Mayor’s Garden Trail will be in it’s third year in 2014, generously sponsored again by Steve and Sava from Pomegranate café in the town centre. Since it’s conception in 2011, by local garden owner Geoff Stonebanks, this trail has tried add new interest each year and to include gardens that have never opened to the public in Seaford before. 2012 was no exception when there were 3 brand new gardens on the trail, 1 Buckthorn Close, Wyndover in Chyngton Lane North and 11 Steyne Road! There were many wonderful comments made about each of these gardens, 2 of which will be opening for the National Gardens Scheme in 2013. For those that are not aware, the trail raises money for the Mayor’s nominated charities each year! In 2011 Linda Wallraven chose Waves, and in 2012, Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special needs Support Group, as well as St James Trust. In 2013 Anthony White also chose Seaford Downs Syndrome as well as Waif ’s and Strays. The trail raised £1000 in 2012 and an amazing £2000 in 2013, so what can it hope for in 2014? Geoff has already worked his magic and found three gardens that will be new ground for the intrepid Seaford garden visitors next season! The first is Lee Highley’s garden at 39 Marine Drive followed by Barbara and Gerald Mine at 47 Marine Drive, both in Bishopstone and the third is Clare Mayer’s garden at 36 Kedale Road in Seaford. These are in addition to the other 5 gardens already signed up to open on the 2014 trail, which will be held on Sunday 22nd June between 11am and 5pm. Full details at www.mayorsopengarden.co.uk On being asked why he chose to get involved, Lee said, “For the last two years I have had the pleasure of being one of the artists exhibiting at Geoff & Mark’s garden Driftwood in Bishopstone as part of Artwave, and have been inspired by the reactions of the many people who have visited. I decided to open my own garden as it is a chance to give something back to the community and raise some money for good causes.”
His stunning garden has a wide view of Tide Mills & Newhaven harbour and consists of a beach garden, colourful shrubs, lots of pots, a vegetable patch, several seating areas and wild orchids growing in the turf. Clare Mayers said “I have frequently helped out at Geoff ’s garden, Driftwood, over the last few years on his open days and been asked by him on numerous occasions to open my own for charity and now I’ve finally succumbed.” Her secluded garden at 36 Kedale Road involves trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, a wildlife pond, several seating areas and a Buddha, amongst other things! Geoff says it is a wonderful and tranquil haven, full of colour from flowers, vegetables and fruit. A must see on the trail! Barbara and Gerald Mine were also asked last year and have decided to give it a go in 2014. Barbara says “Our 240 feet garden has been started from scratch with nothing but lawn and two hedges. It’s now a full on coastal garden. It has been important for us to introduce colour and this has been quite a learning curve finding out what works and what doesn’t.” The other gardens set to open their gates in 2014 are Cosy Cottage at 69 Firle Road, Seaford Community Garden, Wyndover in Chyngton Lane North, 14 Lullington Close and Geoff ’s own garden, Driftwood which featured in the Mail on Sunday and Sussex Life in 2013. Who knows how many more gardens, new or previously opened, might be added to the list by next year? Do you want to open as part of the trail next year? If so please contact Geoff on 01323 899296. Photos top: Mayor Anthony White with Geoff Stonebanks, below: Lee Highley’s garden, 39 Marine Drive, Bishopstone.

Later in the month we congregated at Andrea Butti’s house to wrap up shoeboxes for the Mustard Seed charity. Everyone eagerly took part in bringing some Christmas joy to disadvantaged children who otherwise Page might miss out. The photo shows Andrea and Jean Vine counting the boxes ready for despatch. Seaford demonstrated its “sporty” side in the District Skittles Competition against Midhurst & Petworth Club. President Jean demonstrated her “over the top” tossing skills and Joan Sharman bowled in armfuls. All that can be said is it’s all in the taking part rather than the winning!

Would the poly tunnel still be standing? Would the roses be scorched by the salt and wind? What about the tall eucalypt? No, thank goodness, the walls behind which our garden shelters ensured that it was more or less unscathed by the autumn gales. To wax philosophical for a moment, that sums up our spot in the Crouch: it is a place of serenity that for three hours each week provides what can seem like a retreat from everyday cares and with lots of laughter thrown in. But there’s no slacking mind, and we’ve all been busy clearing up leaves – where do they all come from? – tidying beds for the autumn, pulling up the last of the tomatoes, aubergines and peppers – they made a great crop this year – and digging over their bed in the poly tunnel.
HILL HOUSE
BED & BREAKFAST
We are very grateful to one of our regular volunteers, Steve, who wheelbarrows waste that cannot be composted all the way from the Crouch to the waste recycling site at Cradle Hill, so of course the current uncertainty over the future of our tip is causing us great concern. Let’s hope that the county council sees fit to let the tip continue operating. The winter project at the garden will be building portable staging for potting up, and that will be something of a luxury for those volunteers who are sometimes reduced to squatting in odd corners to deal with seedlings and propagate from mature plants. The bulbs planted earlier are coming on beautifully and there should be a great choice of hyacinths, daffodils and tulips on the sales table in time for Christmas, along with winter vegetables. So come along and see us every Wednesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm, to visit or maybe to join us as a volunteer. Everyone, whatever their age and abilities, is assured of a great garden welcome. The Garden Team Photos, top to bottom: Norman Baker MP, here with town mayor Anthony White, cut the ribbon on our new classroom. Thanks to Jan for the lovely bunting. James tends one of our huge pumpkins prior to Halloween, Jimmy (left) does a great job clearing leaves.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB At the October meeting where club members were joined by 13 visitors, we were all transported to the Indian Sub-Continent. Our demonstrator and guide, Nadira Burki, had mistakenly brought the containers and flowers for Eastern Delights and not Sheherazade as we had expected, so Aladdin, Sinbad and Ali Baba were not to be seen. Nadira’s first arrangement entitled “The Hostage” took its inspiration from the moments during a Pakistani wedding when the Groom was held hostage by female members of the Bride’s family until financial matters had been agreed. The flowers used were two toned mini gerbera and roses. Secondly “Bag Lady” which symbolised the importance of tailors to her family, was achieved with Sunflowers, Camellia foliage and Kangaroo Paw flowers in a container made from a take away bag covered in plaster of Paris and spray painted copper.

COFFEE SANDW
Next came “The Veil” set in a silver painted plaster of Paris container resembling the “Sorting Hat” of Harry Potter. Soft pinky green anthuriums, pussy willow sticks, fantail palm and grevillia leaves were used while Nadira explained how she wore her own veil and the differences between inside or outside her home and whether or not men were present. “Henna Nights” similar to Hen Nights explained the importance of Henna within the Pakistani Community and had variegated aspedistra leaves, cymbidian orchids, silver silal and sprayed silver palm leaves Finally “The Garden”, evoking memories of Nadira’s grandparents’ garden in Pakistan, a white arrangement with silal and hosta leaves, soft ruscus branches, white antirrhinums, white gerbera and white avalanche roses. Overall a glimpse of another way of life! At our Christmas meeting on 19th December six members will each demonstrate a Christmas Arrangement and these will be raffled. Afterwards a special Christmas Tea will be served costing members £1 and visitors £5. For further details please contact Tina Bacon on 01323 873162.

CARS FOR CASH INITIATIVE SUPPORTS SEAFORD CANCER RESEARCH UK A Seaford charity is asking the public to donate old cars as part of a novel fund raising drive to boost its vital work countywide. Seaford Cancer Research UK raises money to help develop treatments through research. Over the past few years major advances have been developed to assist people with their recovery. Although there is not a cure for all types of cancer, with your help we can help to finance further research and maybe a cure. To accelerate its fund raising work, it has now joined up with Giveacar, a non-profit social enterprise which collects unwanted and unused cars for charity. Regardless of their condition, cars are collected freeof-charge nationwide by Giveacar then sold through an online auction or disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. Profits from the sale are then donated to a charity of the car owner’s choice. Even if the banger is scrapped, it still nets the selected good cause between £40 and £160.

If you nominate Seaford Cancer Research, every penny raised will go to Cancer Research to help with research into relief or cure for cancer sufferers. There have been rapid advancements over the last 20 years. Many car owners want an easy and completely free way to get rid of their old car. Giveacar will help them to do this in a legal and environmentally friendly way. The scheme is intended to discourage those irresponsible owners who may consider abandoning their cars, spoiling the appearance of the local environment and also costing local taxpayers’ money to remove and dispose of it. 2013 has certainly been an eventful year for the Seaford & District Horticultural Society. The weather has not been kind to our gardeners. We first had severe cold, then wet, then the hottest and longest summer for many years and, so far a fairly mild autumn. Despite these problems we put on two successful “shows” and held many other events for our members. Our Summer Show in June, again sponsored by Diella’s, suffered from the fact that there where no Sweet Peas ready for exhibiting anywhere in this part of Sussex. However, our members did put on a fine display of roses and garden flowers, which was enjoyed by all during our Coffee Morning in the Church Hall. Our 111th main Horticultural Show took place in August at Seaford Head School in Arundel Road. This new venue proved to be excellent for our purposes and we had one of our best “shows” for many years with over 400 visitors. Displays of flowers, fruit and vegetables of the highest standard filled the hall, together with domestic produce, wines, arts & crafts and photography. The numbers of exhibits in the vegetable classes were down on recent years due to the poor weather. However the flowers, particularly dahlias and gladioli were lovely. The increased number of entries in the children’s classes was also welcomed.
College for Lady Gardeners, Seaford Town Crier, and Rapkyns Nursery. We’re looking forward to 2014 and plans are being made for many more social evenings with guest speakers, coach trips and special events throughout the year.

A Review of the Year of the Society
JOBS TO DO IN DECEMBER
3If you intend to buy a real Christmas tree then ensure that it’s from a sustainable source ie: Specifically grown for the Christmas tree industry. The most popular trees are Norway spruce (Picea abies) and the Nordmann Fir (Abies Nordmanniana). The blue-coloured needles of the Nordmann Fir will last longer hence it may be more expensive. 3Don’t forget to help birds over the winter period. Supply them with a source of water and food. Seed, nuts and suet balls are all excellent food for the birds and make fine Christmas presents for any gardener. 3Another excellent gift is membership of the Seaford & District Horticultural Society. See details above. 3Check all outdoor pipes and taps are sufficiently lagged or have winter protection. If possible turn the water supply off! 3December is the ideal month to prune grapevines. Once all leaves have fallen cut each shoot back to one plump bud.

Seaford Gardening Club Now that the clocks have changed and the evenings are drawing in we can close the curtains, turn up the heating (!) and settle down with the TV, an interesting book or a hobby. Some days may be fair enough for us to tidy the garden, greenhouse or shed before the winter sets in. Christmas is only a few weeks away so there will be cards to write and send, presents to buy and wrap, and food menus to mull over. A very busy time for all of us. Seasons greetings to you all! Dr Sarah McKenzie was our speaker at the October meeting – a lady of many interests but mainly the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Her knowledge of British trees is exceptional and it would be impossible to relate all she told us in a short article. The main theme of her talk was to define which trees are classed as British – some 37 species; the difference between a tree and a shrub and the identification reference structure of leaves, bark, flowers, seeds etc. Of course, trees grow in diverse types of soil and habitat. Many species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects rely on them for their homes and food. There are also many types of fungi and lichens which depend on them – some advantageous, but some to indicate the tree is dying. Timber has many uses too for kitchen and household tools, furniture, walking sticks, coffins and boats, however Dutch Elm disease and Ash die-back are a current concern. Sarah ended her talk by telling us about the tree that ate metal items – including a bike, wire netting and tools that had been left leaning against the trunk, unnoticed, for some years! As the tree grew it literally “gobbled up” these items within its structure – a bizarre sight! It was a very interesting and informative evening, enjoyed by us all.

Sussex Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to feed the birds this winter. By November, nature’s larder of nuts and berries starts to dwindle and birds really benefit from a helping hand to see them through the colder months, when they are at their most vulnerable.
Seaford
Jess Price, WildCall Officer, says “Garden birds need to eat up to a third of their own body weight every day in winter just to keep warm through the night. They need food which is high in energy and protein. Saturated fats such as suet and lard are ideal and can be mixed with bird seed or nuts for a tasty treat.” But Jess wants people to know it’s very important not to use left over fat from roasting tins which is bad for birds; meat juices can smear their feathers, may contain salt and provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Vine House Farm donates 5% of all their bird food sales to Sussex Wildlife Trust to help them with their vital conservation work in the county. www.vinehousefarm.co.uk Photo: Great spotted woodpecker, blue tit and great tits

A Short Story
The Christmas Party
Friday 17th December, 1965
Having straightened his collar and tie in the school cloakroom, Colin Anscombe looked at the finished article in a mirror, and the affect of the mod-style jumper he had bought with his pocket money savings at the weekend. However, he was more than aware of the dash that best friend Robbo cut standing next to him while combing his hair; he looked as sharp as a tack, and Colin felt somewhat demoralised by the comparison. He shrugged this thought aside; now was the time to think about the evening ahead, particularly Katie Simmonds. He thought she had flirted with him once or twice recently, and she appeared to have shown interest in seeking out his company during break time in the library corridor three days before. They had spoken for two whole minutes and it had lifted his spirits. He had always liked Katie, and following this apparent recent interest he fantasised about getting off with her; maybe walking her home and then arranging to go to the pictures in the Christmas hols…she would be his first girlfriend…this could be the biggest night of his life, and he felt a little flutter in his stomach. “Cool jumper, Anscy, the girls will love it...nice!” said Robbo, interrupting Colin’s thoughts while combing an errant wisp of hair to the correct side of his parting. Colin smiled in acknowledgment and felt encouraged by the remark as they made their way downstairs towards the restrained hubbub in the school hall which had been festively decorated with paper chains and Chinese lanterns. However, the lighting, along with the subdued rhythms emanating from a somewhat distressed record player, contributed to a complete lack of atmosphere within. English teacher Bob Stafford gainfully tried to manage the audio equipment, and despite the odd record skipping and jumping, he succeeded in keeping the music flowing, but not to the extent where any of the pupils had mingled together in the centre of the hall. In fact, both boys and girls were self-consciously standing around in huddles of their own gender. There was periodic sniggering from some of the boys, and furtive glances over towards the alien creatures on the other side of the hall. Seeing them in flowery print dresses, wearing stockings and hiding behind varying
degrees of make up had unsettled some of the boys and made them even more wary. A few of the girls had used this art form to their considerable advantage, but many had been heavy handed with mascara and lipstick, and some of the less visually gifted girls were the butt of private, but cruel jokes between some of the boys, who, unlike Colin and Robbo, had made very little attempt to spruce up their own appearance for the evening. A little pocket of girls started to dance with one another to Day Tripper, The Beatles’ current number one, and Bob kept the tempo going with Chris Andrews’ Yesterday Man, but nothing as yet had encouraged any of the boys to follow suit or intermingle. Bob Stafford looked on in embarrassment, not only for himself, but for the youngsters themselves. “Have you got My Generation?” asked Robbo in frustration. “It’s a bit loud Robertson,” replied Bob thinking over the possibility, “for the girls I mean… yes, I think it’s here somewhere. These are the youth club records, it must be in here somewhere,” he said shuffling through a box of 45’s. “Yes, here it is. Thanks Robertson, I’ll give it a go.” “I should kill a few of the lights first,” said Robbo, “just for a bit of mood, like the youth club.” Bob Stafford wasn’t sure and went over to consult Miss Whitehouse, Home Economics teacher and sometimes evening companion, although this was a closely guarded secret. “They want me to turn off some of the lights,” he whispered casually. “They do, or you do?” she said with a glint in her eye. “Young Robertson wants My Generation.” “Not surprising the way he’s dressed…young Robertson is their generation!...where does he get the money? He’s got better clothes than me…and you come to that,” she said looking at Bob’s brown corduroy trousers and tired-looking green woolly pullover. “Yes, go on, it will be alright. It can’t stay like this all night; they will die of boredom.” And so it was that the lights were reduced, The Who let rip and the evening came alive. Some of the boys started moving about, gradually increasing in gyration while Robbo, demonstrating some smart moves, showed that he was obviously well versed in the activity. He soon became the focus of attention of one or two of the girls. Continued over...

Half and hour later and the evening was in full swing. A moderate amount of boys had plucked up enough courage to engage some of the more appealing looking girls in a jerky face-off which passed for dancing, not least of all for Suzie Fisher who was now enjoying the company of young Robertson and his mod alter ego. Colin’s stomach had been churning over as each record ended, trying to pluck up the courage to ask Katie for a dance, preferably a slow one. When he finally did start to make a move across the hall, My Generation got a second outing and he turned on his heels and returned to the huddle by the wall bars that skirted the hall. He hated The Seekers, and he definitely hated The Carnival Is Over, but it was to this refrain that finally found him twitching awkwardly opposite the girl of his dreams. He had finally done it. After two years of admiration and many more of acquaintance, he was now the single focus of her attention, and she was actually appearing to be enjoying herself and smiling at him. I’m fixed up. I have a girlfriend. Can’t tell Mum or Dad, not yet. Better make sure sister Jenny doesn’t find out, she’ll blab for sure. We’ll go to the pictures...this weekend... I’ll buy her some flowers or chocolates...a small box of Milk Tray... like I bought Mum, on her birthday...1/11d, but worth it... I feel so... great! Katie was wearing a bright red hair band and a pale primrose coloured floral shift that her mother had spent two days creating at her sewing machine the previous weekend. There was an Alice quality about her, but it was Colin who was in Wonderland. Lost in a world of his own, the record faded all too quickly and he was left to panic about his next move. Katie tilted her head slightly, looking at a small scratch on Colin’s chin. “You’ve scratched your face,” she said sympathetically. “Oh, it’s nothing...did it shaving.” Arghhh! Did I really say that? What on earth made me say that? Cut myself shaving? Desperately he tried to recover the situation. “Would you like a drink?” “Yes, alright...it is rather hot.” “It’s all that dancing,” he laughed recovering his composure. “Orange or lemon?” “Orange please,” she said, but if Colin noticed her eyes wandering around the hall, it did not register.
56
He queued at the double trestle table hosting an array of multi-coloured plastic beakers. In front of him stood a plauditory Robbo, his arm draped around the shoulders of Suzie Fisher...“Yeah! Stevie Marriott...he’s the face...hair...clothes...really gear...when I’m seventeen I’m going to get a scooter...get loads of mirrors...bomb down to Brighton...it’ll be fab!” “Come on Anscombe; what will it be?” said Mr Taylor the history teacher and in charge of refreshments for the evening. “Ugh? Sorry sir; an orange and a lemon, please sir,” Colin said handing over a sixpence. He returned with the cordials, but Katie was gone. He looked around the hall and eventually spied her dancing with a Fourth-year boy to the strains of Otis Redding and the somewhat ironic My Girl. When the record finished the Fourth-year boy took Katie’s hand and they walked over towards the refreshment tables. Colin stood motionless, gazing into infinity, a drink in each hand, and the stomach for neither of them. Adapted story The Beatles Generation by Alan Morton http://www.thebeatlesgeneration.com

Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society is proud to present, as its next production, The Pirates of Penzance which will be performed at the Devonshire Park Theatre from Tuesday, 6th May to Saturday, 10th May 2014. The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The opera’s official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on 31 December 1879, where the show was well received by both audiences and critics. Its London debut was on 3 April 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for a very successful 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York. Pirates was the only Gilbert and Sullivan opera to have its official premiere in the United States. At the time, American law offered no copyright protection to foreigners. After their previous opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, was a hit in London, over a hundred American companies quickly mounted unauthorised productions, often taking considerable liberties with the text and paying no royalties to the creators. Gilbert and Sullivan hoped to forestall further “copyright piracy” by mounting the first production of their next opera in America, before others could copy it, and by delaying publication of the score and libretto. Pirates was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration and introduced the much-parodied Major-General’s Song. The opera was performed for a century by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in Britain and many other opera companies and repertory companies worldwide. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.
The Society is always looking to encourage the influx of new members, of all ages and genders but if you just happen to be male and possess a tenor voice, you will be especially enthusiastically greeted. If you have a penchant for harmony singing, coupled with a modest sense of rhythm and movement for any choreography that may be involved (no previous experience of either is necessary and will certainly be no bar to membership), again, you will be warmly welcomed. If you should also happen to possess an acute sense of fun and an appreciation of topsy-turvy silliness, then so much the better! All persons interested in joining, therefore, should contact the Hon. Secretary: Sue Davies on 01323 767193 or davies_ronald1@sky.com Auditions for potential principal roles will take place in December and rehearsals proper will commence at the beginning of January. For more information kindly visit the Society’s website at www.eastbournegands.com Photo from The Sorcerer – May 2013. Constance (Lucy Sarsfield) and the Notary (John Kimberley) share their own mis-matched love with the chorus.

Christmas by the Glass Christmas Day in our house starts with a leisurely family brunch, complete with a cheeky little cocktail. Cocktails at breakfast might not suit everyone, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend them as part of your usual healthy diet, but at Christmas I feel I can indulge without guilt. I would suggest a Bloody Mary as a good accompaniment to a late breakfast.
Bloody Mary
Ingredients: Ice cubes, vodka (double shot), ½ lemon (juice only), 6 dashes Worcestershire sauce, 3 dashes Tabasco sauce, 150ml/5fl oz tomato juice, pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper. Method: Place the ice into a tall glass and add the vodka. Add the lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and tomato juice. Stir well. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve straightaway. Before lunch, it’s nice to serve champagne with a festive twist.

Champagne with Cranberries
Ingredients: Champagne (or any good quality sparkling wine), dried cranberries. Method: Simply pop 5 dried cranberries into each glass and pour the champagne over. The cranberries “dance” in the bubbles and look very Christmassy. And finally, no Christmas Day is complete without a tumbler or two of mulled wine.
Mulled Wine Ingredients: 400ml/14fl oz red wine (Shiraz is fantastic), 400ml/14 fl oz water, 400ml/14 fl oz good quality orange juice, 80ml / 2½ fl oz brandy, 4 tbsp dark brown sugar, ½ tsp ground ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp nutmeg, 3 cardamom pods, clementine, 6 cloves (to pierce the clementine) Method: Make up a spice bag using muslin or a piece of thin cotton with the ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Place the red wine, water, brandy, orange juice and sugar in a large pan; add the spice bag and clove-studded clementine. Heat slowly and simmer over a very low heat for at least 30 minutes. Serve with mince pies in front of the fire to round off a perfect Christmas Day. By Sarah Davey

Death in High Heels
Seaford Little Theatre 8th – 16th November Angie James says in Alan Lade’s welldesigned programme: “As director, apart from the huge fun I am having working with such a talented bunch of actors and actresses it is certainly a challenge, as I feel that I am standing on a Regent Street roundabout directing traffic...” Don’t worry, Ms James, you did a great job. In what must have been a very difficult first act, her actors frequently had to sweep or stumble through six doors on this great set.
While not strictly speaking a farce, nor dark enough to be a black comedy, what turned out by the end of the first act to be a whodunit adapted from a novel by Christianna Brand was always very funny. Ms James and her team had their comic timings spot on and we all loved it. Adapted for the stage by Richard Harris, it is set in 1937 in a back room behind a smart couture house just off Regent Street that is staffed by a hierarchy of competitive sales ladies. All the comedy stereotypes are deliciously there, including a camp gentleman, a dotty elderly woman what does, a mannequin and a pompous proprietor. As Aileen Wheeler played by Clare Forshaw observes, it’s all bitch and stitch. Apparently Ms Brand
wrote her debut novel in 1941 while she was working as a salesgirl, the idea stemming from her desire to kill an irritating colleague. Spend too much time in this milieu and I think anyone could be forgiven for doing away with the lot, so effectively were the parts played. Here the murder weapon is oxalic acid crystals bought by sales woman Rachel Gay to clean her hat. How and by whom they are used to kill Caroline Doon is the subject of the police investigation which takes place in the second act. Jenny Humphries stole the show as Rose, the elderly and doddery servant. There were elements of Mrs Overall in her quick shuffling footsteps and shaky hands, and her accent was a work of art. In a play set in those snobbish times of course, the way one spoke was “terwibly” important, and Ann Mabey as Zelda Gregory and Helena Bell as Caroline Doon, her competitor for a coveted role running a showroom in Deauville, had their voices to a tee, Mabey perfecting that forced tone that can only be spoken through a lemon-sucking mouth and Bell using an earthy timbre that then would have been considered frightfully vulgar; Bell contrived a great collapse too. Lee Powney (playing Dorian Pouvier) spoke volumes with his rear as he minced limp-wristedly around, engaging in lively repartee with Clare Forshaw’s (Aileen Wheeler) hip-twitching, spirited and seductive mannequin. Susanne Crosby (Rachel Gay) effectively conveyed the horror of thinking herself responsible for someone’s death. Against all these colourful characters Tricia Pape (Irene Best), who has great stage presence, stood out as the rational, senior saleswoman who knew she wouldn’t be chosen for Deauville by Steve Wetherilt’s (Frank Bevan) womanising proprietor. Act 2 belonged to Rob McLaren, making his stage debut, and Kay Wetherilt who played the detectives with a great mix of seriousness and humour. But whodunit? That would be telling. All I will say is that Seaford Little Theatre can walk without a wobble in high heels. Andrea Hargreaves

SMALL BUSINESS UNIT 67
Will You Have To Sell The Golden Goose? Amongst all the anxieties facing a couple who are separating, for those who run a family business together, the future of the business can be most worrying. The business might be run by the husband and wife as partners or it might be a small venture run solely by one of the parties or a limited company. Whatever the business type, the most pressing question for many is often “what will happen to the business if we divorce?” Every case is different and many factors have to be taken into account. Despite myths to the contrary, a family business will be treated as an asset of the family in the same way as the family home and any other assets. This means that a spouse is likely to be entitled to a share of the value of the business even if they had no direct involvement in it. The first step towards agreeing a settlement in respect of the finances is for both parties to provide full and frank disclosure of their financial circumstances. Included within that disclosure would be valuations of all the family assets, including the business. Valuing a business is not as easy as it sounds and is certainly more complicated than valuing a house for example. There are many factors which have to be considered which include its assets, goodwill, tax liabilities and projected income. It is important that the business owners work closely with their accountants to ensure that a fair estimate of its value is provided. If the couple do not agree on the value then it may be that a more formal and accurate valuation needs to be acquired jointly between them which may require the assistance of a forensic accountant for example. Once this information is gathered the negotiation process gets underway. This can take place in a number of ways, including Mediation, Collaborative Law or by correspondence between
68
solicitors. The court or a referral to Arbitration may be necessary if the other options are unsuccessful. Once a suitable route is decided on, how to deal with the settlement will then be the next issue to tackle and will vary enormously from case to case. One simple solution is for one party to buy out the other’s interest in the business or that the business interest is off-set against another family asset. For example, the family home may be transferred to one party on the basis that the other party retains the family business. Where there are no other assets to off-set, or in a case where each party is vital to the business’s success, then there would need to be an alternate approach. This might involve one party remaining alone to work in the business, but that the other party continues to receive a portion of the business income. If a suitable alternative cannot be found then a sale of the business may have to be considered. Historically the courts have tried to protect “the goose that lays the golden egg” but following landmark cases in 2000 and 2001, the court’s approach has changed. However, it remains the case that wherever possible the courts will strive to avoid a sale and it is unlikely they will require a business to be sold if there is any other reasonable and practical alternative. There are some protective measures available but these will need to be given careful consideration early on and should be in place well before divorce is contemplated. If one party is seen to be moving assets or shareholdings for example then this could have a very negative impact on their case. The courts have powers to set aside any transactions that are specifically designed to avoid future financial claims on divorce.

Seahaven Lioness Club On 10th October the Lionesses again hosted a very successful Fashion Show at Seaford Golf Club, in conjunction with M & Co. The Show was in two halves, the first half displaying casual outfits from M & Co’s latest range, and the second half moving on to the more glitzy and glamorous in preparation for the party season. Models came in all shapes and sizes and ranged in age from toddlers to grannies! Kim Rennie of the Foam and Fabric Shop in Broad Street set up a craft stall displaying and selling some beautiful creations – cushions, soft toys etc. There was a raffle in the interval and the Lionesses are very grateful to all those who donated prizes. The event made just over £500 in total, some of which has been

given to M & Co’s nominated charity, Cancer Research UK. A donation will also be going to LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal), which funds research into a variety of blood related conditions, including leukaemia and myeloma. Many thanks to Matt and his staff at M & Co for making the evening possible and successful.
On Sunday 3rd November the Club held its annual Formation Anniversary Lunch at the Hydro Hotel. To celebrate our 20th birthday certificates were presented by the Lions District Governor to four founder members; Audrey Clark, Rita Collins, Chris Clements and Maureen Smith. President Esther Beerling also welcomed a Lion from Germany and the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Anthony White, and his wife. Forthcoming events On 12th and 13th December the Lionesses will once again be trying to part you from your money for good causes with a Lucky Receipt Draw in Morrison’s. The idea is you buy a ticket for £1, which goes into a draw. At the end of the two days a lucky ticket will be drawn out of the drum and the person named will win the cost of their shopping (up to £75 – we are trying to make money for charity after all!). We hope you will all support us generously, as the people of Seaford generally do. This event is raising money for the Philippine Disaster Fund. All money raised by Lions and Lioness Clubs is distributed through local Lions Clubs in the area affected, so we are confident it gets through to the people who need it. On Wednesday 19 December at 7pm there is an open invitation for anyone and everyone to join the Lionesses for a Carol Service in St Leonard’s Church, featuring Seaford Silver Band and other guest performers. There is no charge, but there will be a retiring collection.

Seaford Kurlers Hi it’s me again and it is now my most unloved time of the year – cold, cold, winter. Like everyone else I will have to get on with it. Let’s hope for some lovely sunny days at least. Seaford Kurlers had their AGM back in October. It was well attended and we elected our new committee for the 2013/2014 period. We also presented the winner of this year’s Bob Matthews’ Achievement Cup to Jimmy Nicholls. When Jimmy first joined us he was not very good at getting the stones down the full length of the court and I think we also overwhelmed him – we can be a noisy lot. He soon settled in and now plays a very mean shot. Jimmy is well and truly part of the club and he really deserves the award. The photo above shows Jimmy receiving the award from last year’s winner, Jordan Meeks. We’ve have had quite a few new members joining us recently, which is great as everyone gets to meet new people. We really are a very mixed group and get on very well. Wave Leisure are very helpful and supportive and manage to put up with us all – a sudden influx for refreshments must be quite daunting sometimes!

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) OCD is a highly upsetting condition in which a sufferer experiences powerful, intrusive and distressing thoughts or images, usually connected with an imagined disastrous event (perhaps that one’s son will die in a car crash), and devises one or many rituals designed to reduce or ward off that event or make reparation for having the bad thought. Usually, the more the rituals are carried out, the more the thoughts recur, requiring yet more rituals. The condition first occurs because of raised stress levels, often as a result of trauma, physical illness, worry, fear, lack of sleep, some personal setback or crisis, or even a fright. People who develop the compulsion to wash their hands, and who often end up spending many hours a day in this activity, may first have experienced a generalised anxiety about their health or safety and then focused on a fear of germs. The bottom line is that some important emotional need is not being met. Rituals can be extremely varied and numerous, may involve walking across a room a certain way, picking up cutlery a certain way, counting or clapping a set number of times, etc, and have to be carried out in exactly the right way, otherwise the whole sequence must be begun again.Yet many sufferers are amazingly resourceful in hiding their condition. What happens in OCD is that a primitive part of the brain, called the amygdala, which is our emotional alarm system, starts to associate the thinking of the OCD thought with danger, setting a stress reaction in train which leads the sufferer to carry out the ritual to avert the danger and reduce the stress. Sufferers are convinced that something dreadful will happen if they don’t complete their rituals, however many times they are required to do them. When they are caught up in this thinking and carrying out the rituals, they are in a trance state, just like a dream. And, just as our dreams seem totally real and believable to us when we are in them, so the trance state of OCD is equally compelling and believable to sufferers. They are, therefore, absolutely terrified about stopping their rituals. It is essential to help a sufferer see that they are separate from the OCD – a lot of people choose to call it “the
bully’” as a means of starting to see it as something outside of themselves. This helps them take a step back and begin to identify OCD thoughts as very different from normal thoughts. To help them to resist performing the rituals associated with the intrusive thoughts, they need to have distracting activities prepared, which they can launch into instantly – for instance, singing, dancing to music, doing the ironing, calling a friend, taking a walk; the activities need to be varied, so that a new ritual isn’t established. The more that the OCD sufferer does not carry out the ritual after experiencing the thought, and realises that nothing terrible does happen, the more the rational part of the brain can override the nervy messages from the amygdala. As time goes on, and the messages continue not to be acted on, the thoughts start to fade and stop altogether. This is not easy for sufferers to put into practice, of course, because they believe so strongly in the power of the ritual. Human Givens practitioners use an effective technique to help resolve trauma, if one exists. They also use techniques to encourage them, while deeply relaxed, to visualise themselves, as if on a TV screen, experiencing the frightening thought but not carrying out the appeasement ritual and calmly doing something else instead, such as making a cup of tea or doing the washingup. Going through this, in a calm state, in the imagination helps instruct the brain to respond this way in reality. Just as important, Human Givens practitioners help sufferers identify what is lacking in their lives (commonly sufferers have ceased to have a social or work life, because the rituals are so demanding) and help them to get their needs met in fulfilling ways. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287

What is the Winter Solstice? In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs when the “top half ” of the Earth tilts away from the Sun at its most extreme angle. This gives us the longest night and shortest day of the year. It normally falls on 21st December, and from this point on, the days will begin to lengthen until the Summer Solstice on 21st June. The word “solstice” comes from the Latin phrase for “sun stands still”. This is because the sun appears to rise and set in the same two places for several days in a row. Cultures through the ages have marked the Solstice and celebrated the triumph of light over dark. Massive prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge were built to align with the Winter Solstice sunrise. The ancient Romans had a seven-day festival called Saturnalia, when everything would be reversed – men would dress as women and masters dressed as servants. People decorated their houses with greenery, lit candles and gave presents. Celtic druids gave pieces of mistletoe as a blessing. They also began the tradition of the Yule log, which was burned to conquer the darkness and bring luck for the year ahead. Many people celebrate the Solstice today, and it’s interesting to see how many of the customs have become part of our Christmas festivities. By Alex Albrighton

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT Ethelwyn Hammond This is Ethelwyn Hammond, a Seaford girl who lived a life of adventure until the untimely death of her husband. Ethelwyn lived in Cinque Ports Road (now Upper Broad Street) and in November 1909 married Joel Hammond at St Leonard’s Church. Joel was from New Zealand and after their marriage learnt to fly, obtaining pilot’s licence number 32. He took young Ethelwyn to Australia and when he flew her from Perth to Sydney in 1911 she became the first woman to fly in that country. When interviewed in 1911 she gave her hobbies as “motoring, aviation and shark-catching’” What a girl! The couple moved back to Sussex the following year and Joel joined the Royal Flying Corps but he was killed in a flying accident in the USA just a few weeks before the end of the war in 1918. Ethelwyn returned to Seaford but never remarried. She died in 1951. Kevin Gordon Seaford Museum winter opening: Sundays and Bank Holidays, 11am to 4pm. Running Commentary... Races in December tend to have a festive flavour, like the Worthing Christmas Cracker on the 7th, the Mince Pie 10 (Peacehaven) on the 8th, the Uckfield Fire Station Santa Run on the 14th and the Christmas Pudding Dash (Ashburnham Place, Battle) on the 21st. Seasonal events are always worth entering because they invariably increase the enjoyment factor and reinforce the belief that it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you run…it’s the taking part, and you’ll do it with your own reasons for running, driven by your own innate pace.
The Bethlehem Marathon – a Christmas Story
It was a clear starlit night as competitors continued to pour into town for the first ever Bethlehem Marathon. There was an air of excitement as if people sensed something special was due to happen. Would a world record be set or perhaps every runner might achieve a PB, or maybe an unknown person would appear and become world famous? The arrival of a large squad from the Shepherds Running Club and all their pets, seemed to raise expectations, and they were joined by a host of angelic-looking athletes who were sporting natty and aerodynamic winged T-shirts. They were full of praise for the event organiser and sportingly wished all runners peaceful weather and good luck. The hotels filled quickly, and the bars and restaurants were buzzing with talk about the laser light show that seemed to shine like the brightest star they’d ever seen. Joseph Carpenter, a runner from Nazareth AC who was travelling to Bethlehem for the marathon with his pregnant wife, Mary, arrived very late due to the wrong type of sand on the camel trail, and although they had a booking at the Bethlehem Barn Youth Hostel, their room had been taken over by the paparazzi so they had to kip down in the cycle shed at the back. Anyway, just

as Joseph was pinning his race number on his vest and laying out his kit and trainers for the following morning’s race, would you believe it, there and then, right between a state-of-the-art tri bike and a baker’s delivery bike, Mary went into labour. Quickly the ever- resourceful Joseph unbolted two panniers from a couple of the bikes and stretched out his long rucksack across them making a trendy hammock (an idea he must have cribbed from someone). Before you could say “Brooks training shoes are the best!” the baby was born. “Shall we call him Moses, after Moses Kiptanui, the Kenyan 10,000-metre runner?” asked Joseph, “or Brendan, after that nice Mr Foster, or perhaps Harvey, after my favourite pint of beer?” Mary looked at Joseph as if to say, “Der…!!! No, he looks like a Christian. Yes, I think Christian suits him… and anyway, have you noticed the halo above his head? Did you put it there?” “Not me, Cherub,” replied Joseph. Just then, three runners from the far East (The Goodwin Sands Running Club, I think) called Caspar Ying, Melchior Yang and Balthazor Young arrived bearing gifts. They were known as the three Ys men, and they brought an enormous packet of gold-tinted nappies, a pair of Frankie’s socks and a large pot of aromatic Vaseline rub. The young Christian did grow up to become world famous and even now, his miraculous achievements are still talked about. Merry Christmas Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

Seaford Hard of Hearing Club is about to close...
For want of a Secretary and Treasurer This club, which organises monthly meetings, speakers, parties and an outing every year, has served the hard of hearing community for the past 54 years. The secretary and treasurer are retiring at the end of the year and so far no replacements have been found. The club is now faced with a difficult decision. The club cannot continue without officers to run it. Most of the members have now reached the age where they do not feel able to carry out this work although some of them have done so in the past. We are immensely proud of our long record of service in the community and the committee members are anxious that the club continues its commitment to local people in the future.

For some folk Christmas without turkey is a bit like stew without dumplings, or gin without tonic, but if yours is always disappointingly dry and overcooked, why not look at an alternative this Christmas?
Goose is tender, full of flavour, relatively cheap, and a 4kg bird should easily feed six people. It has a reputation for being fatty but don’t be put off. Simply prick the skin well and pour off the surplus fat about an hour into cooking, and hey presto – problem solved! Ducks are smaller, which means they cook faster than a huge turkey or goose. Moist and strongly flavoured, one large duck feeds four so they are perfect for smaller gatherings, but don’t plan on serving one up if you’re hosting a Christmas for twelve! Beef is quick and easy to cook, and as you can buy whatever amount you need, it is suitable for gatherings both large and small. Allow 500g of rib of beef per person (including the bone) and glaze the top to keep it moist. Why not give venison a try? It’s a lean meat, and consumption is currently on the increase as we become more health-conscious. It can be purchased at good butchers. A more exotic option is ostrich, which tastes like good quality beef fillet and requires very little cooking.
Full Installation Service
Other possibilities are ham, lamb, partridge and pheasant. So go on, stuff the turkey this Christmas and try something different for your festive feast! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

The Gift: Christmas
Presentation at Seaford Baptist Church
Seaford Baptist Church is getting well known for its musical evenings. There was “We’ll Meet Again” for the Jubilee, “Two Sisters and a Funeral” in May, and a Folk Evening with The Band of Brothers in July. Now for Christmas SBC is presenting “The Gift”, a powerful musical entertainment by internationallyknown songwriter Graham Kendrick. Christmas is seen by most people as a time for goodwill, family, entertainment, and giving and receiving gifts. Add to that the Christian perspective that the greatest gift of all, Jesus, was freely given to anyone who wants to receive Him, and that makes Christmas even more special. This evening production, on Friday 13th December at 7.30 p.m. and Sunday 15th December at 6.00, is on at Seaford Baptist Church in Belgrave Road. It is followed by refreshments and admission is free! It’s suitable for all ages and runs for about 90 minutes. Taking part are the SBC Concert Choir, The Band of Brothers, other local musicians, and singers of all ages. There will also be well known Carols to join in with, readings, drama and a few surprises! The aim is to entertain and to inform. Prophets thousands of years ago forecast the arrival of “Immanuel” meaning “God with Us”, and those taking part aim to show this true meaning of Christmas, and why this promises that the party that will go on for eternity.

On 26th October at 10am, organisers Sylvia Dunn, Chair of Smarter Seaford, Jenny Thornton, Southern Rail and Mike Franklin, Network Rail, alongside five volunteers, managed to clear the disused track bed area of brambles, weeds and rubbish. Sylvia and Jenny stated, “It was a great morning, even the sun shone, we managed to clear the whole area ready for the next stage, which will be to prepare and level the ground ready for planting. Our aim is to plant a wild flower bed, to enhance the look and feel of the station, we would also like to thank all the volunteers for giving up their time and for their hard work.” Sylvia and Jenny are already planning the next date and will be once again looking for volunteers.“This is a very exciting project as Seaford Station is 150 next year and we intend to have the station looking at its best in time for the celebrations.”
