Welcome Welcome to the February 2013 issue of Seaford Scene. February already? I’ve only just put the Christmas decorations away! Nevertheless, I’m already noticing that the days are getting longer, and the nights are getting shorter, which is all good news. So February, the beginning of Lent, of course, with Shrove Tuesday on the 12th, and then a celebration of love with Valentine’s Day on the 14th. In this issue we begin a new series of monthly articles on ‘Butterflies of Seaford and Surrounding Area’, see page 68 for the first instalment. The spring Neighbourhood Watch Association newsletter is also published on page 14 and both Seaford Little Theatre and the Synergy Theatre are putting on productions this month, see pages 50 and 74 for more details. Enjoy your February issue.

Rotary Club of Seaford The main focus of our attention recently was the Christmas Sleigh, and this year we raised a total of over £8,700, a new record. Earlier in the year we made modifications to the sleigh to make it more ecolologically friendly and cheaper to run in the long term, which has been achieved by fitting an inverter (which provides power from the car to the sleigh) and low-power lighting. As a result the sleigh looked better than ever with the LED lights giving a much brighter effect, and it was wonderful to see the joy on the children’s faces when the sleigh came into view. We took Father Christmas and his sleigh out on 19 evenings during December, and they were also in Broad Street each Saturday morning and on Christmas Eve morning. All of this required considerable resources, and we are extremely grateful to our partners, and to friends of our Club, who helped us to make this possible. But, most of all, we thank the people of the town for their support and generosity to enable us to achieve a new record amount, all of which will be used to benefit the town and its people in some form. Also in December, Santa surprised the children by making an unexpected flying visit to the Good Times Pre-School, based at the Cradle Hill School site. After the initial excitement, Santa talked to the children, explaining the need for leaving out carrots for Rudolph and other useful tips. He then answered many interesting questions from his audience. Soon it was time to leave, because Santa had a very full diary at that time of year, but not before leaving a large sack of presents to be given out later.

Seaford Primary School asked us for help to enable 98 children from the school to sing as part of a choir of 8,000 voices at the O2 arena on Tuesday, 15th January 2013. This concert, arranged by Young Voices, is one of a series also taking place in Sheffield, Birmingham and Manchester which raise funds for CLIC Sargent, FareShare, and the Young Voices Foundation. To get the Seaford Primary School students to the venue costs £1,170. As a result, President Paul Vaesen went along to a concert for Heartsease at the school on Friday 7th December (thoroughly enjoying the experience) to present a cheque for £300. This donation, with help from Heartsease too, meant that the target was met. Heartsease exists for those who are alone, usually through bereavement. Although based at Seaford Baptist Church, anyone in the Seaford area may join. We have again supported the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance with a donation of £500 to help with their considerable running costs. We were pleased to receive an informative letter of thanks together with a Certificate of Appreciation.
Seaford Rotary Club Announces Young Musicians Competition After last year’s successful first competition, the Rotary Club of Seaford intends to make its contest to find the Seaford Young Musician of the Year an annual event. This year’s competition, which is open to both instrumentalists and vocalists, will be held at Newlands School on Sunday, 3rd March. Entrants will be required to perform a piece of music of their own choosing and lasting not more than five minutes. Entry is free, and is open to students aged 11 to 17 who either live or go to school in Seaford, and closes on 10th February, or earlier if all available places are filled. Full details may be obtained from the Rotary Club’s website www. seafordrotary.org.uk or from Rotarian Jim Anderson on 01323 492846.

ST JAMES’ TRUST On behalf of the Trustees, I ‘d like to thank all the people and clubs of Seaford who have helped the Trust keep up its service to our clients by donating funds, in a very difficult year. We have to thank Pat Case for organising the collections at Sainsburys and Jean Staff for taking on the Drop-In. Jill has stepped up and taken on the bookings and is helping to run the office. Viv Reynolds has decided to do one day a week in the office and hopes to spearhead the raising of major funding in 2013. Janet White and her ladies must be mentioned for their usual fantastic Lunch Club on Tuesdays, although sadly we have lost some of the members. The charity shop takings are up, and the ladies have also made money from disposing of the unsaleable items as rags. Colin Hammond has once again been a brick, assisting with the technical side of negotiations over the Gym Building, and he has taken on the roster for drivers and escorts. All the drivers and escorts who man the minibus are also doing a great job. To those volunteers that I have not named, we appreciate all that you do for the Trust. We really do need more drivers and escorts if you have time to spare. We are very pleased to welcome Charles and Elizabeth who have taken up the baton and restarted the monthly musical Friday; the first one was very well received and attended, so Charles will be carrying on entertaining us on the last Friday of each month. Please come along and support him. We will be providing the minibus and for a donation we will collect you and take you home. The debacle with the local builder and the Gym Building was finally sorted out in court, but although we were awarded costs by the judge, the man’s reaction was to laugh and tell us he was quite happy to go bankrupt, again, rather than pay us anything what a charmer. The future of the Gym Building is now in the hands of a reputable local agent, who will hopefully be arranging planning permission and putting the site on the open market to obtain the highest possible price. This is intended to free capital and enable us to carry out very urgent work on our elderly buildings. The sale is quite urgent as another year has passed without any proper maintenance work being done. If it had not been for a rapid response from Steve Silver (Inside Out), our local caring jobbing builder, we would have been flooded out twice and the broken gate at the back would have cost a fortune to fix. Steve has taken on the Trust as his charity - a true friend. Over the next two years we have to move the gas meter and the old gym electricity supply, sort out the mains water

feed into the Clubhouse, rebuild the lift room, rebuild the mortuary, replace the heating, decorate the outside and inside of the Clubhouse, replace doors and windows, resurface the car park; these and many smaller jobs must be all funded, and soon. Colin and I will be putting a plan of priority to the Management Committee as soon as we know what funds are available. We said goodbye to three Trustees last year: Ken and Doreen Davies and Maggie Gentry, and John Creasey had to leave the Management Committee. Viv Reynolds has joined the Trustees and Rita Scarfe has joined the Committee as Seaford Town Council representative and is taking a lively interest in our wellbeing. The new minibus finally arrived in February 2012 and has proved, in the main, a popular addition. In the interests of raising our profile, we have had two previous articles in Seaford Scene, two ‘appearances’ on the local Seahaven Radio, I have given two talks to local clubs, and in January, I gave a talk at the Tuesday Probus Club. Janet had good coverage for the Christmas Lunch in the local press. It is up to all of us to mention St James’ at every opportunity! I am now in my third year as Chairman of the Trust. We need to find a Vice-Chair soon as I wish to split the Chairman’s job from that of the MD/Administrator. I hope to be able to hand over the Chair in July 2013 so that I can concentrate on the refurbishment of the Clubhouse and oversee the sale of the gym. A date for your diaries: Haven Guitars are holding their concert at Peacehaven Meridian Community Centre on Wednesday 13th March for our benefit, and we will supply and sell refreshments. We are very grateful to Clive for his continuing support. The Mayor of Seaford has chosen us as one of her charities for her year in office and she and her consort Liz have been staunch supporters over the year attending several of our events. We thank her for generating extra income for the Trust. We still need to find at least one more Trustee, so please bear this in mind if you know someone suitable. Trustees do not need to be active volunteers, but need an ability to see the greater picture and help guide the Trust into the future. If you are interested in giving some time as a volunteer or would like to know more about the Trust and what we do please telephone 01323 492800 between 9am and 1pm or go to our website: www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/SJT/com.htm With best wishes for 2013, Bryan Turner, Chairman

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford Great fun was created at our Christmas meeting by all the members taking part in a Christmas Hat competition. The judging was done on four categories – the best floral, the most Christmassy, the most original and the most wacky. The photo shows the four winners and I leave it to the viewer to decide which was which!

The wave is summed up in the words of the hymn: As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day The voice of prayer is never silent Nor dies the strain of praise away. I was a Stranger and you welcomed me is the title of this year’s Day to be held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Belgrave Road, on Friday, 1st March at 2pm and 7pm. Christian women in France have prepared the service, which will focus on how we all welcome the alien in our land. ‘When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien’ (Leviticus 19: 1-2,33). St Peter’s rector, Canon Andrew Mayes, will lead the reflection on the theme at the afternoon service. Men and women are welcome to attend. After each service there will be refreshments with a French flavour in the Chapel Rooms.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’ INTRODUCTION
Newsletter Winter 2012/13
We welcome you to our second ‘intermediate’ newsletter, which is produced to fill the long gap between our hand-delivered autumn and spring editions, and trust you will find it informative.
LOCAL CRIME
We regret to have learnt that there have been a number of burglaries in Seaford over the past few months. The majority were carried out in the early evening and when the homeowners were away, either on holiday or out at work late, with entry being gained at the rear of the property. The local Police and ourselves urge you to make your homes appear as ‘lived in’ as possible, especially after dusk, and to consider having internal lights set up on timers; install movement detection external security lights; keep jewellery, laptops and high value belongings out of view; keep all doors and windows securely fastened; remove anything that could assist a break in at the rear; consider an approved burglar alarm system; arrange for a trusted friend or neighbour to make regular visits if you are away on holiday, and to park a car on your driveway.
NO COLD CALLING ZONE AND DOOR/WINDOW NOTICES
We distributed nearly 8,000 No Cold Calling notices with the Autumn 2012 Newsletter and we would encourage you to display one in a visible position if you are able; there are spares available at the police station desk if anybody still requires one. The Zone has been in operation for 10 months and is proving successful in reducing the incidents and harassment from unwelcome cold callers. East Sussex Trading Standards are carrying out a survey to judge the effectiveness of the Zone, so we would be pleased to hear from you if you have any comments or incidents to share. Further details will follow in subsequent Newsletters.
14
Please remember, the Cold Calling Zone does not prevent a trader calling on you, but they must leave immediately if you request them to go away. If they do not leave, they are committing an offence and you may summon the Police for assistance. Some of them operate a scam whereby they notify the police call centre in Lewes that they are in the area and get a reference number of the call, and then try and convince you they have police permission to trade. Please do not fall for this ploy; it is just a sneaky way to gain your confidence.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
We are taking this opportunity to advise you of our forthcoming Annual General Meeting, which is an open meeting where we carry out the formal process of presenting the 2012 chairman’s report, treasurer’s accounts and the election of officers, etc. for 2013. It will be held on Thursday, 21st March 2013 at 7pm in St Leonard’s Church Hall. There will be a guest speaker and light refreshments will be served. We cordially invite, and encourage, all members to attend.
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS
The chairman and committee support the police panel meetings and ensure we are represented at each meeting. The panel meetings are a chance for you to meet your local police community support officers and to discuss and raise any local issues with them in an informal setting. At the time of writing, the next meetings are as follows, and they are held at three monthly intervals: West Area: 31st January 2013, 7pm at Bishopstone Church Hall. East Area: 19th February 2013, 7pm at the Vale Road Community Centre. Central Area:13th March 2013, 6pm at the Police Station, No 37 Church Street.

YEARLY SUBSCRIPTIONS/MEMBERSHIP FOR 2013
Towards the end of 2012, we had just over 850 subscribers on record, but these all lapsed on 31st December and a new membership year commenced on 1st January. Approximately 600 members renewed in advance and our aim for 2013 is to boost membership to 1000 by the end of the year. If you have not yet renewed your membership, or would like to join for the first time, we invite you to use the form at the bottom of this newsletter. The subscriptions are very modest - £3 per household per year, £2 if the household includes a senior citizen. We must also remind you that we now only send our regular email updates to paid-up members. The more subscribers we have, the more impact and influence we can have on local issues, add support to local crime fighting and keep Seaford and Bishopstone a pleasant place to live.
SECRETARY/PUBLICITY OFFICER and DELIVERERS
The association is run by a small committee, and we would be very grateful if anybody would be willing to assist us by becoming our secretary, to help with the administration of meetings, etc., or our publicity officer, to assist with the publication and distribution
of the newsletters. You do not need to be an expert in these areas, but would need to be able to devote a few hours a month to the cause. The role might appeal to a student who wants to gain some admin experience or bolster their CV, etc, with voluntary work. We are also always looking for additional newsletter ‘deliverers’ and would be pleased to hear from anybody who could deliver locally twice a year. (If you don’t receive a printed copy of the spring and autumn newsletter, it is probably because noone has volunteered to deliver in your road! But, even if you do receive a copy, maybe you would be willing to deliver in an adjacent road?) Please do not hesitate to contact the chairman if you feel you could help in any of these capacities.

Local Church offers free financial makeover, at no cost! The third Monday of January is commonly known as ‘Blue Monday’ due to the combination of postChristmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills. This makes it the ideal time for a local church - one of 400 such in the UK - to offer free courses to help those in difficulties to get their New Year finances in order. Seaford Baptist Church is running the CAP Money Course following training from the debt charity Christians Against Poverty. CAP Money coach, and member of the congregation, Fran Allen, said: ‘We are putting on this course because we know how financial worry can mess up relationships and caused havoc with health and wellbeing.’ ‘The CAP Money Course is there to debt-proof families against this kind of stress and with something like a third of us having relied on credit to get us through Christmas, it might be the best resolution we can make going into 2013.’ The confidential sessions comprise three hours spread over three weeks and help people to create a household budget, prioritise spending, begin saving and re-organise their banking. It is designed to be helpful to anyone, whether unemployed, receiving benefits, working, self-employed, retired, newly married or recently divorced.

Young Carers Enjoy Magical Christmas Party Thirty local Young Carers had a magical start to their Christmas, thanks to the Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions Club. At the Young Carers’ Club in Laughton, Care for the Carers organised a fun-filled Christmas party for young people, aged 8 to 18 years old, who look after a family member who couldn’t manage without their help. They enjoyed some extraordinary magic by Magician John Schofield, friend of the Lions Club, and received a surprise Christmas present to take home at the end of the evening. Ashley-Marie Brunton, Young Carer from South Chailey said, ‘The Magician was very good with his tricks. He was very comical and could relate well to us young carers with young jokes’. Jennifer Twist, Chief Executive at Care for the Carers, explained, ‘Sadly, for many young carers Christmas can be just like any other day. National research tells us that a third of Young Carers provide
over six hours of care on Christmas day. It was important for us to organise a treat for local young carers so that they could have some time to get together and have fun. On behalf of everyone at Care for the Carers, I would like to thank the Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions club for their generous support, and John Schofield for providing such wonderful entertainment.’ Care for the Carers helps families to get support in order to reduce Young Carers’ responsibilities. As well as clubs and activities, young people can speak to a support worker about any worries or problems. The charity is seeking support from the local community to maintain clubs, activities and schools work – if you can help by volunteering, fundraising or making a donation, they would love to hear from you.

Hellebores and half-past-tenses The most interesting and enjoyable gardens have something in flower all year long and we’re delighted to report that the Exchange community garden at The Crouch is a glowing example. At the time of writing, two days into the New Year, our splendid hellebore bed is coming into vigorous life, with glorious fat buds and luscious new leaf growth. Must be all that rain! Chatting inside the polytunnel over tea, biscuits and leftover mince pies – elevenses tend to become half-past-tenses in the winter – we had been discussing when the bed would be looking its best, whether that would be February or March, but if our fickle seasons can be second-guessed we would say join us any time now for a great show of various varieties. Our enthusiastic garden team has increased by two, so welcome Jan and Dan. Jan is proving a dab hand at everything and has quite a few ideas of her own – just what we welcome! – and Dan is something of a woodwork expert so we hope to be putting him to work making bird and bat boxes, and making some troughs which we shall ask our horticultural college students to plant up... so if anyone has any wood to spare, or suitably sized offcuts, we would love to hear from you. And we are also very grateful for the non-gardening support we get, so at this point a special thank you to

Joe for those delicious Christmas party pizzas. Lest you think it’s all eating, drinking and admiring past work in the garden, though, we are braving whatever weather the winter throws at us, tidying up, cutting back and preparing beds for the first sowings. The seeds we have ordered are arriving and by the time you read this the first real signs of spring will be here. Do come and see for yourselves on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm when our gates will be wide open in greeting. The Garden Team Photo: Our first hellebore greeted the New Year.

Time for take off for Sussex businesses A second runway at Gatwick is just one of the options being considered to increase the UK’s airport capacity. While decisions made in 2013 will affect Sussex’s long term economic prospects, the various options are likely to remain grounded for some years. Sir Howard Davies is leading a commission to examine the scale and timing of additional capacity for UK aviation. The final report is due in the summer of 2015, shortly after the next general election. Even if ministers were to accept the proposals immediately statutory and planning requirements will take time and any additional runway or airport is unlikely to be completed until the mid 2020s at the absolute earliest. Nevertheless 2013 will be a key year in the process. By the end of the year the Davies Commission is to make an initial report, dispensing with unfeasible options. Any contender hoping to be considered must be included as a viable option at this stage. Gatwick Airport is proposing a second runway for which its Chief Executive Stewart Wingate says it has “the space, capability and access to financial resources”. He adds that a new runway would allow the airport to compete and grow, which he says will add to the choice available to passengers. Given the ongoing investments made in the airport one would perhaps not expect anything other than an expansion plan, but what are the implications for Sussex and the region, as a whole? The Institute of Directors nationally has backed proposals for a second runway at Gatwick as well as a third (and fourth) at Heathrow. It also argues that further infrastructure investment – especially in the rail network – will be vital to take full advantage of any increased aviation capacity.
Any such major infrastructure projects will have a significant economic impact during construction. There will also be long-term economic consequences for those regions which are either selected or rejected in the final proposals. In Sussex, for example, the economic landscape, as well as the physical one, will look very different if Gatwick has a second runway compared to all the extra capacity going to Heathrow, or even an entirely new “Boris Island” airport on the Thames Estuary. There are other issues of course, not least of which will be the environmental impacts of any decision. Any scheme will have winners and losers, and the merits of each proposal will look very different depending on your perspective. At this consultation stage groups and individuals across the country are being encouraged to look at the options, consider their views and make them known. Various groups are already in communication with the interested airports and can pass on opinions, but anyone can make their own submissions to the Davies Commission at airports.enquiries@airports.gsi.gov.uk. Whatever your thoughts it is time to make them heard. Safer Internet Day: 5th February The tenth annual Safer Internet Day takes place on 5th February, and is designed to help everyone use the internet and other new technologies safely and responsibly. Passwords are the first line of defence against cyber criminals. Long passwords that use numbers, symbols and mixed-case letters, are the most secure. Use a different password for each of your important accounts and change them regularly. Malware is a type of computer programme that can be installed on your machine without your knowledge. It can be used to try to access your personal information, or to force your computer to visit websites, send spam email, or perform other actions without your knowledge. To protect against malware, install at least one good quality anti-virus product and scan regularly. You should also upgrade your operating system and software to the latest versions and, if possible, turn on automatic updates.

Be careful about what you click and download. If you’re not sure about an unfamiliar site, leave it and research the software before installing it. If malware prevents you from leaving the page, for example by repeatedly opening a download prompt, use your computer’s task manager to close your browser – generally accessed by pressing ‘ctrl’, ‘alt’ and ‘delete’ at the same time. Do not trust anything within an email that looks suspicious – even if it’s from people you know – and visit websites by entering the address directly in your browser instead of using links in emails. Do not trust pop-up windows that ask you to download software to make your computer safe because it has been infected. Close the window and don’t click inside it. There are tools and controls available to help you manage your online experience. Google SafeSearch excludes sites with sexually explicit content from search results, and Safety Mode on YouTube means that videos with mature or age-restricted content will not show up in searches. Take an interest in your child’s internet activity and talk to them about their experience. Better still, spend time with them working online so that you know how they are using the internet. Children need to know that the internet can be a dangerous place and that not everyone online can be trusted. They should not share personal information like their name, age, school, phone number, email address or photos, and should always use a nickname as their screen name. To register on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, they should be at least 13. If your child wants to meet someone they have met online, make them aware of the potential dangers, encourage them always to inform you of their plans and insist that you go along too, especially for the first meeting. With these systems and procedures in place, using the internet should be a safer experience for us all! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

Who’s Who In Seaford?
Val Shepherd, President and Founder Member of Seaford Little Theatre. Val has lived in Seaford for all her life, nearly 93 years. Since Seaford Little Theatre was formed in 1945, she has acted, directed, served on the committee, painted scenery and cleaned and has loved being a part of the Society. In fact, as a child she wanted to make the theatre her career. She attended Lewes County School for girls and started work as a secretary at Hall & Co (coal and coke merchants in Seaford) and then served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service from 1941 to 1945. In 1943 she married Ted. They have a daughter Penny and two grown-up grandsons. What do you like best about Seaford? Seaford has always been my home. I was born here as was my mother before me. My father’s business was here (French’s Garage) and my grandfather was Seaford’s Blacksmith in Crouch Lane. I love the sea, the Downs, the whole ambience of the place - it is, and always has been, ‘home’, and I have never wanted to live anywhere else. What book are you reading? I am ‘reading’ 633 Squadron Operation Crisis at the moment - this is a ‘talking book’ because my sight is badly impaired and I can no longer see well enough to read any printed pages easily. What is your favourite film? The Barretts of Wimpole Street with Charles Laughton. How do you relax? Sitting in the garden or on the beach in the sun, relaxing with my husband, family and friends. What is your favourite journey? On the train from Paddington to Penzance, on the way to the Isles of Scilly. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Don’t worry about things that may never happen. What is your favourite song or piece of music? I love any piece of music by Johanne Strauss. What is your most memorable learning experience? Learning to ski aged 49. I continued to enjoy skiing holidays with my husband for 30 years. What is your favourite smell? The first rose of summer. What is the first line of your favourite poem? God gave all men all earth to love - ‘Sussex’ by Rudyard Kipling. What makes you sad? Any ill treatment of animals, especially dogs and horses. What is your greatest extravagance? Going to a camping exhibition to buy a saucepan and leaving with a trailer tent. Anything else to add? The last time I was acting on the stage at the Little Theatre was in Waiting in the Wings by Noel Coward in 2005 for the 60th anniversary production of the Society - it was a marvellous part and I enjoyed every moment of it. My sight is now so impaired that I can no longer see the stage and actors clearly. However, I always go to productions at the Little Theatre, attend Committee Meetings and Monday morning coffee meetings. I am very proud of our Little Theatre and always will be.

SEAFORD LITTLE THEATRE’S
THE TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT
The Titfield Thunderbolt was a very popular 1953 film comedy made by Ealing, starring Stanley Holloway, about a group of villagers endeavouring to keep their branch railway line open following threat of closure by British Rail, and competition from dodgy local bus operator, Vernon Crump. In 1997 celebrated playwright, Philip Goulding, took on the considerable challenge of turning that film into a warm, funny and entertaining stage play, which has been successfully touring ever since. Based around the station at Titfield, it features a host of eccentric characters and some marvellous theatrical effects and tricks to transform Seaford Little Theatre into a fully functioning village railway line! Respected local actors, Angie James and Mike Piller, make their debuts at Seaford, alongside the more familiar faces of Roland Boorman, Jenny Humphries, Sue Shephard, Martin Adams and Andrea Lowe and the long overdue reappearances of Phil Armstrong and Lee Powney, last seen here at the end of the 20th century! To cap it all there is also a cameo stage debut for backstage boy David Heathcote. So don’t miss the train, book your ticket on the Titfield Thunderbolt, pack your sense of fun and climb aboard for an evening of joy and nostalgia. The show opens on Friday, 15th February 2013 and runs through to the following Saturday, 23rd February, with evening performances from 7.45pm and a matinee on Saturday, 16th February at 2.30pm. Tickets for members and friends of the theatre, as usual, are available in advance from 18th January 2013 at our box office: Sussex Eyecare Ltd, 9 Broad Street, Seaford, BN25 1LS. Please note this is open until 2pm on Saturday. Postal applications are also available and should be sent to: David Backhouse, 62 Stafford Road, Seaford, BN25 1UA. They must be accompanied by a cheque made out to ‘Seaford Dramatic Society’ and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If the position you request is not possible, the nearest available seats will be sent. The ticket prices are £8 each, with two for the price of one on the first night, and £7 each for the Saturday matinee. SEAFORD KURLERS I am writing this article in December so whatever the weather we are having now is, we can all look forward to spring with all its beautiful spring flowers. We already have blue tits inspecting nest boxes, so all is looking good. Seaford Kurlers are looking forward to another year of sport and fun at the Downs Leisure Centre. Since the last article, we have had our Christmas lunch at The Drove – what a wonderful spread they put on for us. Our next social event is our visit to the Brighton Centre to see Starlight Express. We shall be taken in style to the event via ESDA (East Sussex Disability Services) coaches. I will now tell you about something wonderful that happened on 1st December, 2012. In the spring of 2012, one of our kurlers told me that she also belonged to Seaford Choral Society. She explained that the retiring collection from two of their performances each year was donated to a local charity or club and that she had nominated Seaford Kurlers for the collection at their performance of The Messiah in December. In October, I received a telephone call from Peter Sayers, the Secretary of Seaford Choral Society. He explained that at a committee meeting it had been decided that Seaford Kurlers would be the club to receive the December collection. To say that I was surprised was an understatement. I wrote a short article to be included in the concert programme, explaining that the money would be used to take kurling equipment up to Bradbury Court in Seaford. The house belongs to the charity SEEABILITY and a number of our members go there, whilst some live in at their sheltered housing homes (Barclay House and Applewood House). Sadly, not all members can get out, due to their disabilities but they are however quite able to play the game of New Age Kurling - which was invented to enable people with quite severe disabilities to play the game on equal terms with able-bodied people. With the money raised, we would be able to take a full set of equipment to them to be used in Bradbury Court. Two of our members are qualified kurling coaches and will be able to explain the game and help them to have another interest. The performance of The Messiah on the 1st December was superb. Some kurlers were there to hand out leaflets, show the equipment and answer questions.
The retiring collection raised was £460. I would like to say a very big thank you to Seaford Choral Society and to the fantastic generosity of the audience. These are difficult financial times for everyone and I cannot say thank you enough. The equipment is fairly expensive – a complete set costs about £435. Once again a heartfelt THANK YOU. June Wood, Secretary, Seaford Kurlers. Contact details: June Wood, tel: 01323 895376 email: sally1989@tiscali.co.uk

CafÉ Wave
at the Downs Leisure Centre Did you know that at the Downs Leisure Centre there is a café - Café Wave - that serves drinks, snacks and hot lunches every day? If not, then it’s worth trying it out because the food is very good and great value, parking is free and there’s also free wi-fi! I went along with a friend at the beginning of January to see for myself.
I met Franck, one of the café’s supervisors, who welcomed us and showed us the wide range of fresh food that was available. On offer was the special of the day, which was macaroni cheese along with sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, paninis with various fillings, salads,
HILL HOUSE
BED & BREAKFAST
kiddies’ lunch boxes, jacket potatoes, cheesy chips and homemade cakes. We mulled over the menu with a cappuccino and a mocha at one of the tables and after some consideration, plumped for the macaroni cheese, a brie and cranberry panini, a healthy tuna mayonnaise salad and cheesy chips to share. Whilst waiting for our food, we took in the atmosphere of the café which is located near to the reception desk. People of all ages were coming and going - we could see children performing somersaults on the trampolines in
the gym, boys who had finished playing football were refreshing themselves with drinks from the vending machines - it was quite a hive of activity that gave a happy, healthy buzz to the place. The café itself had plenty of seating with one room, the Olympic Lounge, overlooking the sports field. Our lunch arrived and it looked delicious. In fact it was very tasty, particularly the panini, which was oozing with melted brie and cranberry. The tuna mayonnaise salad was fresh and a good size, the macaroni cheese, served with a baguette was very creamy whilst the big bowl of cheesy chips were delicious - chunky, crispy and fluffy inside! We couldn’t finish it all which, unfortunately meant we were also too full up to try either the lemon and blueberry or the carrot cake, maybe next time! To top it all, I thought the prices were very reasonable £3 for the daily special, £2.95 for the panini, £2.50 for a large salad, and cheesy chips were just £2. FEBRUARY checklist
3 Frost, ice and snow can bring problems for the garden so be
prepared in advance. Turn off or insulate outside taps. Keep paths clear of mud and leaves. Check ponds regularly. If in doubt stay indoors until the worst is past. 3 Put cloches, covers or even old carpet down on the vegetable bed to warm the soil for March sowings. Leave in place for at least three weeks or more. 3 This is a good month to finish your winter pruning of trees, roses, shrubs and climbers. New buds should be visible by the end of the month. Don’t delay these jobs as an early spring may just be round the corner! 3 Send of your mail order requests from nurseries or plant catalogues. However, you will need to keep the young plants under glass or indoors until the weather warms up. 3 Broad beans are an early vegetable to crop. Sow seeds in small pots in the greenhouse ready to plant out in March.

and unusual varieties. If you are looking for the more common varieties used by most of us each year then it does pay to compare the prices. Celebrity packets can be between 25 and 50 pence more expensive. A few of Sarah Ravens are a little cheaper. The Duchy Collection can be up to 50 to 75 pence higher in cost. My conclusion is that it is well worth checking and comparing prices before you shop. However, if you are looking for something a little different then you may find it will cost a little more!

re celebrity-endorsed packets of seed too expensive or are they value for money? You could be paying more just to have a famous name on the front of the packet or on the advertising display. Last year Which Magazine did a report on this and came to the conclusion that some were indeed overpriced. It therefore pays to check or compare these with standard packets when purchasing your seeds from shop or garden centre displays. Celebrity seed packets available in this part of East Sussex include Sarah Raven (Johnson’s Seeds) James Wong (Sutton’s Seed) Alan Titchmarsh (Thompson & Morgan) and the HRH Duchy Seed Collection.
THE YEAR OF THE SWEET PEA
It has been said that 2013 is to be the Year of the Sweet Pea. If this is so then why not grow some of these lovely flowers and perhaps enter them in our Summer Flower Show. Their rich and vibrant scent will fill your garden for many summer months. Many growers sow their seed in autumn as they are quite hardy and survive the winter but it is still possible to sow your seed this month for stunning results in the summer. The Sweet Pea is Britain’s favourite annual because it is so easy to grow. The wide selection of seed packets can be found in all garden centres. Colours include white, pink, blue and you will find a wide range of shades, scent and sizes. Sweet Peas have a long taproot so sow in a five-inch deep pot or use the special Sweet Pea tubes (these are like the cardboard centre of a toilet roll). Sow in a general multipurpose compost and water well. These should germinate within two weeks then grow quite fast. When three sets of leaves are available pinch out the growing tip. This will make the plant branch out on at least two sides. These side shoots will produce much larger and better flowers for your summer display. Transplant into their main growing area in mid to late March when about 5 to 6 inches in height. All Sweet Peas need support to climb up so provide sticks, canes, frames or netting up to a height of six feet or more. Don’t be afraid to ask an experienced grower for help or advice. Once you’ve got the Sweet Pea bug you could have it for life! Mike Parker (Chairman)

We did not have a talk in December as we had our Christmas meal instead. Those members that attended the event at the Avondale Hotel in Seaford enjoyed a very pleasant evening with delicious food, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere. Jane and Martin certainly know how to give value for money. We have already booked for next December! Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 27th February at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (using door opposite Tesco’s store). Geoffrey Mead will give us a talk entitled ‘Sussex on the Rocks’. Visitors are more than welcome to attend for a fee of £2 or can join for the year for £10. There is no charge for admittance and refreshments are available during the evening. We are a very friendly club so we are sure you would enjoy your time with us. SEAFORD TREE WARDENS
HELPING TREES TO LIVE First we should like to thank all the kind people who have helped in our projects. This month we shall be helping the residents of Saltwood Road North and Millberg Road, with the children of Chyngton Primary School, to improve the area by planting about a score of street trees - residents have kindly contributed to the cost of the trees. Some people have asked, very reasonably, why we don’t plant in the summer, which would be a much pleasanter time for participants. But the experts tell us that unless trees can be constantly kept watered in the summer, saplings are much more likely to survive if they can establish in the winter, even though the ground is cold.
Green Waste Recycling Service
The environment for street trees is much harsher than in most gardens. The two most likely ways for a street tree to die are lack of moisture, and strimmer damage. Trees work by pumping water up from the ground through their roots and then up to their leaves through a layer of tiny pipes, called xylem, just under the bark. Incredibly, out of thin air and water, and using the energy of sunlight, the leaves make glucose to feed the tree itself, and oxygen for us to breathe. Strimmer damage cuts through the tiny water pipes in the tree stem, like cutting the hosepipe when you are watering the garden. So it is very bad news for trees. With spring, we hope, just round the corner, we would like to reassure residents that the Highway Authority, in the present state of finances, will be only too glad if residents give a helping hand to a tree in the verge in front of their property, especially by watering small ones and trimming shoots round the base of old ones (called epicormic growth by experts). If you would like your street considered for a planting scheme in the autumn, please contact margerydiamand@hotmail.com or walter.tillyard@btinternet.com. Are you interested in joining a Wildflower Planting Group which some of us are hoping to start this year? Or fostering some baby trees in your garden? If so, please contact us at the email addresses above.

BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD AND SURROUNDING AREA FEBRUARY The location of Seaford, being next to the sea, surrounded by the Downs and with nearby woodland, river and scrubland gives a diversity that is ideal for many types of wildlife. It is still, however, a surprise to find that of the 59 breeding species of butterflies in the British Isles, 40 different species can be found within a 15-mile radius of Seaford. During the spring, summer and autumn I will bring a guide to different species that can be expected to be found on a monthly basis with just a little effort in these surrounding areas. February is still very early in the year for butterflies, but on the odd warmer, sunny day a few of the overwintering butterflies can come out of hibernation briefly to take advantage. Most of these butterflies are
The Language of Flowers Lots of men will be heading off to florists this month but have you ever wondered why we give flowers? The Victorians were a rather coy bunch not given to brazen declarations of love, so a whole language sprang up around flowers and plants with special meanings attached to each variety. The language was called floriography. So flowers could be used to express almost any sentiment and in combination they could convey a whole range of emotions. Try saying it with flowers this Valentine’s Day with our handy guide. Flower meanings Red rose - Passionate love; White rose - Eternal love or innocence; Pink rose - Perfect happiness or please believe me; Orchid - Love, beauty and refinement; Apple Blossom - Preference, good fortune; Begonia Beware!; Bluebell - Humility; Pink carnation - I’ll never forget you;Yellow carnation - Disdain, rejection; Iris Faith hope and wisdom; Ivy - Fidelity; Primrose - I can’t live without you or young love.

likely to be Red Admirals that would have hibernated in out-buildings, amongst ivy or even in rabbit and badger holes. They can be seen flying on these warmer days around gardens as well as in the open countryside. Brimstone are also seen very early each year, with the bright, light yellow male butterflies flying strongly along woodland rides searching for the almost white females. This butterfly hibernates in thick scrub and ivy, very well hidden with its camouflaged leaf-shape wings. Another butterfly that uses the shape of its wings to keep it hidden is the Comma. The underside of the wings are very dark and the ragged shape of the wing give it the appearance of a dead leaf. Also on the underside of the wing is a small white ‘comma’ from which the butterfly gets its name. The top side of the wings are a bright orange and black that can help to brighten up a late winter’s day. Commas can be seen around gardens as well as edges of woodland and scrub. In fact, all these early butterflies can be seen in any terrain, but for a better than average chance of seeing them, Friston Forest or Abbotts Wood would be well worth a visit. These butterflies have several broods throughout the year and can be seen in most months throughout the summer and autumn. For those with an interest in wildlife, Butterfly Conservation has a very active Sussex branch that has several guided walks throughout the year. The organisation has several reserves throughout the country, including two in Sussex that are managed to help endangered wildlife. More information, including recent sightings of butterflies and moths in Sussex, as well as how to join can be found at www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk Bob Eade

so many public figures before and after her. Possessed of a sensuous body and a fierce intelligence, Anne was never going to fade away quietly – not when she could leave her mark on England.
Anne Boleyn by Howard Brenton
Who was Anne Boleyn? A knight’s daughter who got lucky as the breeding mare of a powerful and ambitious family? A cold, scheming temptress who set her eyes on queenship even before returning from her education in France? A passionately religious woman whose fervent Lutheran faith urged her onward to bring about reform? Or an unconventionally beautiful, sexually powerful minx who got everything she deserved? Over the years, Henry VIII’s most (in)famous queen has been perceived as being all these things and more through the prism of popular culture. She has been BBC/The Tudors’ dazzlingly sexy girl, manoeuvred into Henry’s bed by her family. She has been Antonia Fraser’s downfall of the Catholic church in England, and Hilary Mantel’s cold, dangerous – feral, even – manipulator. The truth is that Anne is all and none of these things, like

Howard Brenton’s energetic and engaging play was first performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, London, in 2010, and then enjoyed a national tour in 2011. Brenton’s Anne is confident, intelligent and desirable but, above all, she is a woman of faith and conviction. It was only when she discovered the immense scale of Thomas Cromwell’s fraud that the powerful man from Putney decided that she had to be got rid of – permanently. And he took just three weeks to do it. So, heretic, revolutionary, lover or queen? Witch, bitch, temptress or feminist? Come along and meet her and decide for yourself… The Synergy Theatre (last seen in Seaford in October 2012 with its production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys) is delighted to be returning to the Clinton Centre this February with Howard Brenton’s vital and elegant play. Featuring new and established Synergy actors, including some of Seaford’s finest – Chris Church, John Hamilton and Alan Lade (all last seen in The History Boys), Ann Mabey (The Philadelphia Editor, Kingston), Stewart Wiseman (Twelfth Night) and welcoming Lindsey Holledge and Seaford Head student, Kimberley Payne, in their Synergy débuts. With costumes created for us by Barbara Wight and Debi Lade and with music from Jean Colebourne and Claire Duffield, Anne Boleyn promises to be a feast for eyes and ears! Tuesday 12th – Saturday 16th February 2013, 7.30pm at The Clinton Centre, Seaford. Tickets (£10/£8) from our Box Office on 01273 301444 or Newberry Estate Agents, Church Road, Seaford or: www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk Please be advised – contains strong language.

Our Design We provide the same attention to detail for all our kitchens, regardless of price. We prepare floor plans and elevations, so you can see exactly what we suggest. Then we meet again, go over the plans and discuss the layout and price. How We Work...Our Visit Bianca or Malcolm will visit your home and look at the layout, the style and the individual character of your room. We will measure, take photographs, sketch details but most of all we will listen. This is where you tell us exactly what you want and how you want to live in the room we create. Our Build Once you are happy with the plans we will ask for a deposit and begin building your kitchen. We will arrange every detail of our part of the installation or co-ordinate with your builder. Our installers are in-house craftsmen, renowned for good craftsmanship. We can adapt any unit or door back at our workshop. Remember the kitchen is made just for you, so we give it the attention it deserves. Our Finish When the last piece has been fitted we will check every detail to make sure we have met your expectations. call it pride, as we love to see our ideas realised. SMTJ ‘Food For SEAFORD MARTELLO Thought’ receives rave ROTARY CLUB The Club’s President, Julian Turner, recently visited reviews Cradle Hill Community Primary School and after a Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors performed 'Food For Thought', a sketch show set in a restaurant, on 14th and 15th December at the Barn Theatre, Seaford.
short introduction at their assembly from the deputy head, Mrs Julie Foley, Julian spoke to the pupils and then
The cast, aged between 8 and 17, received rave reviews from the audience. Due to ill health, understudies Alice Lawrence, Danny Woolven and Jade Rogers took on additional roles at very short notice and gave marvellous performances. In the true spirit of Christmas, the young actors donated part of the proceeds of their shows to Children With Cancer (Polegate) and Haydn's Wish in loving memory of local children, Rhys Watkins and Haydn Wileman, who were known to cast members. Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors will be performing their original pantomime 'Aladdin', in March 2013.
presented Mrs Foley with a 3G Kindle for use by the children at the school. President Julian said ‘Seaford Martello Rotary Club is very proud to able to present the school with this piece of modern technology, which will allow young pupils to continue their reading skills whilst away from the school environment. It is for all to use, where needed, to assist those who need additional help and those who wish to learn at a quicker rate’. Mrs Foley said, ‘On behalf of all the pupils of Cradle Hill Community Primary School, we thank Seaford Martello Rotary Club for their generosity. We hope in the future to build on this gift by adding more 3G Kindles to the school’s learning resources to enable more children to use and learn from this media’.

Julian also presented Mrs Foley with a cheque for £300 towards the cost of the Year 6 annual Education Trip to Holland, planned for spring 2013. The club have supported this trip for a number of years and Mrs Foley said, ‘The pupils of year 6 at Cradle Hill Community Primary School would like to thank Seaford Martello Rotary Club for their continued support.’ Photo: President Julian Turner, Deputy Head Mrs Julie Foley and pupils from Cradle Hill Community Primary School.

Running Commentary... Running during the winter months offers clearly different challenges from more comfortable, summertime running. The often icy and slippery conditions underfoot and the very low temperatures should have a strong influence on what we wear. For instance, if it’s windy as well as cold then extra layers, a hat, gloves, scarf and tracksuit bottoms is the dress code that should get you round, hopefully without incurring any ‘cold weather’ injuries. On this issue there are two points that are particularly noteworthy. Put simply, inhaling icy-cold air contracts our airways, and if your neck is also open to the harsh elements while running, then the comfortable breathing rhythm that runners rely on will be difficult to find and sustain. The other vulnerability is the complex calf muscle which, even if you have warmed up, will still be susceptible to strains or pulls. As your muscles warm up further, through the act of running, they will still be under constant attack from the chilly wind trying to cool them down. Muscles need to be flexible, not rigid, in order to allow for the mechanics of running, but their elasticity is affected by the temperature. Leave an elastic band outside overnight when it’s frosty then try stretching it. It will probably snap! Running wisdom says that it is foolhardy, not brave or being tough, to run in shorts and T-shirt in wintry conditions. My advice would be to overdress rather than underdress when running on very cold days… think of the elastic band! - and I speak from experience. Getting off road to do most of your winter running is still recommended, even though it usually means going along muddy and slippery pathways, to reach the timeless beauty of the Downs, where enjoyable
84
running is available all year round. The effort is worth it, providing you have offroad shoes, you avoid the urge to go fast and as I’ve already mentioned, you have properly warmed up the quads and calf muscles. One of my favourite winter runs is to head out along the Alfriston Road and to turn left onto the path that eventually skirts Blatchington Golf Course, staying on this route all the way to Bo Peep car park. From there I turn left and run towards Firle Beacon and left again at the car park near Black Cap Farm. Once I’ve gone past the farm I follow the path that drops down into the winding valley, goes past the Water Works building and through Norton and Bishopstone. A short steep climb takes me to Grand Avenue, leaving me just a mile or so of road running to complete the vaguely circular route. There is no need to stop running in the winter especially if you are preparing for an event like the London or Brighton Marathon in the spring. It’s just a matter of having a sensible and self-preservation strategy for the weather conditions. This month there is the Chichester 10km in February. It is a well-organised, mainly flat and potentially fast course. On the following Sunday there is the Ashdown Forest Cross Country 5-mile race, which has hills and plenty of mud, and is excellent stamina training. Both races are recommended, though for diversely different reasons. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

Anne grew up within sight of the Sussex Downs and after taking her Foundation year in Brighton College of Art, she moved to St Martins School of Art in London, where she completed her degree in Graphic Design. She worked for some years as an illustrator of children’s books, until she had two children of her own, after which she continued sketching and developing her skills as a watercolourist. Taking a class with Diana Bloomfield reawakened her interest in engraving, which led her to undertake a postgraduate degree in Printmaking at the University of Brighton. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy, various galleries in London, Sussex and Suffolk. She has published three books of engravings, and in 2007 was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers. In recent years, she has continued to work both as a wood engraver and etcher, as well as painting in water colour and tempera. Lucky John by Alan Morton
John sat on the verandah at the back of his house and gazed across the veldt to the distant mountains, now in soft focus as the sun set and the pastel-coral light faded. He was unsettled and in deep reflection, his eyes closed and his thoughts preoccupied with many events that had touched him during his lifetime. He did not delude himself that he had not been incredibly lucky, except for that one night of madness in London nearly forty years ago that altered the course of his life and fashioned one of regret and sobriety. He also knew that he could never go back, although he yearned to walk down Mayfair and Park Lane once again and visit the gaming tables. His health had been deteriorating for a number of years and he had known for some time that his life of relative solitude would have to come to an end; he had to be closer to the sort of care that he required, there was no choice in the matter. This realisation had formulated gradually during the past year and resulted in a call to the regional land agents ten days ago. A representative had called earlier that day; like himself he was an ex-pat, but the local accent John had cultivated for himself many years ago was now firmly entrenched and nobody would detect that he was not of local origin. During the early years of his exile he had been suspicious of any new face, especially if they hailed from his homeland. Roger May introduced himself and before John showed him over the property they had tea on the verandah. During this sojourn John was watchful for any sign of anything untoward, but the agent seemed genuine enough. His family had emigrated just over a year ago, but it was on his wife’s ticket. A specialist paediatrician, it was she who had the necessary skills. However, John had been deeply disturbed by the direction that part of the conversation had taken, and it had been niggling away at the back of his mind for the whole day; how did that subject come up? That was it, local crime. The case of the 14 year-old boy who disappeared from Bulsara. Vanished without a trace. “No mystery there.” John had observed. “He is probably living in a squalid room in Jo’burg, scrubbing floors in a seedy restaurant kitchen, and as happy as he has ever been, I’d say.” Roger looked puzzled. “Why so?” “His father is a drunk and a bully, well known for it.

The boy probably took the first opportunity to get out; can’t blame him for that.” “Yes, but to just vanish…” “It happens, life is full of mysteries.” “I guess so, like the Marie Celeste… Glenn Miller… or Lord whatshisname,” Roger laughed. John tried to maintain his composure, and put his cup down on the saucer to stop it shaking. “Or that poor little girl who went missing in Portugal,” he added. “Quite so,” replied Roger more soberly. John was still trying to piece together that earlier conversation when he heard his jeep approaching down the track on the other side of the house. A few minutes later he heard a sound behind him and smiled as he lifted a hand up which was grasped warmly from behind. “Did you have a good day?” he enquired. “Indeed, I had a fine day. I have bought a new dress, and some finery to go along with it. You will be proud of me come the dance next week.” “I am always proud of you, Anika, you know that.” “Most assuredly I do, and I hope you too had a good day. I am sorry that the land agent had to cancel and spoil your plans.” “Cancel? What do you mean?” “There was a call first thing this morning, when you were out. I left a message on the table in the kitchen; did you not see it?” John experienced that sinking feeling that he had been dreading for so much of his life, the feeling of discovery. For many years he had been mentally prepared for such an eventuality, and on the more practical side, had made arrangements that would ensure a safe passage away from trouble. He felt tired, and almost resigned to his fate, but his instinctive powers of preservation were more dominant. He emptied the safe, packed a few belongings and made a single phone call. He explained to Anika that the day he had warned her about had arrived and that they must leave. Half an hour later the house was quiet and deserted. The following morning Roger left a message on John’s answer-phone apologising for the mix up with regards to their appointment. Apparently a new girl in the office had called the wrong client to cancel. Alan Morton - Author of the Beatles Generation www.thebeatlesgeneration.com
