MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB

SEAFORD YOUTH SPORTS AWARDS

With 30 nominations, the Seaford Youth Sports Awards highlighted the amazing young sporting talent we have in our local community. Ten different sports were represented with exceptional young people being nominated for each of five different categories. Sports vouchers worth £50, £20, £10 and stunning trophies were given to the first, second and third places, as well as £200 to the winning club representative, to be used to promote youth sport within that club. All nominees received a boxed medal – Highly Commended – as they were all seen as winners because of the really inspiring written testimonials from their nominators. The theme for the evening was “Anything is Possible” and all of the young sporting stars are well on the way to proving that!! They received congratulations from Alex Mills Barton, who sails in Seaford and has sailed for Great Britain and competed at World Championship level, and also Sadie Mason, who lives

are definitely stars of the future. We already have young people who are very close to competing at Wimbledon, at International level or aiming to make the Olympic team. We wish them every success. The Martello Rotary Club is extremely grateful for the generosity of local businesses who have sponsored the event, namely Peacehaven Chiropractic, David Jordan, Seaford Health Store, Wave Leisure, VR Flowers & Son, Badgers Ink, Barwells Quality Solicitors, Seaford Head School, Intersport, Tansleys Printers, The Sussex Sign Company, Freeman Forman, Jasmin Coaches and Gary Carter. Seaford Martello Rotary Club hosted the event because it wanted to celebrate the sporting achievements of local young people who can sometimes receive less than good press. Event organiser and Past President, Linda Young said, “This new venture highlighted for us that there is a wealth of talent out there, and with everyone’s encouragement we would like to run the event again in the future and perhaps receive nominations from, not only the current participating clubs, but other sports which were not represented this time, particularly the teams in the town.” Brilliant! Well done to everyone! Anything is possible!

Proposed CrossSeaford Transport Working Group The Seaford Community Partnership is a facilitating body working quietly behind the scenes in Seaford. It has contributed to the building of the Seafront Beach Garden, it has helped enterprising Youth to raise the funds for the building of the Outdoor Gym in the Salts. It has a Seafront Working Group which is attempting to kick-start projects enhancing the seafront and held a successful exhibition and survey last year visited by nearly 1,000 people and involving local schools. Projected schemes include improvements to the Splash Point Point Sea Defences Groyne so it is more like a “pier” and producing an outdoor performance area by the Martello Tower. Whilst there is widespread agreement on the benefits of these projects, it has been frustrating, but necessary, to deal with the multiplicity of responsible organisations, public bodies and owners of parts of the seaside environment in the town – none of them are against the ideas but to harness them and

point them in the right direction is baffling and frustrating. But we are making steady progress. SCP is represented on a number of Seaford projects as yet embryonic, such as Impact Seaford, and its members include the Town’s energetic Tree Wardens who have just planted 1,000 trees on Chalvington Field. Transport is another area where it feels that there is a need for a cross-Seaford group to monitor, take public soundings, call for ideas and establish a wish-list of improvements. So a meeting has been called for Wednesday 21st January, for interested groups and individuals to come and thrash out the need and possible rôle for such a co-ordinating group. They would like to have representatives from the local Access Group; from Accessible Transport Seaford; from Cycle Seahaven; from CTLA and Cuckmere Bus; from Taxi Drivers; Horseriders; Disabled Buggy Users; from pro-Motoring groups etc... Seaford Seniors, the Community Rail Partnership, and some Town Councillors, are already on board. Some other individuals have expressed interest. The Open Meeting, in the Lounge at Seaford Baptist Church on Wednesday 21st January at 7pm will be the test of interest. If there is none, then the Group need not meet again. Anyone interested in taking part is asked to contact SCP Director Peter White, on 01323 897360 or peterwhitecrier@hotmail.com to express their interest. Peter White

Did you know we have Saturday matinÉes?

Discover your local cinema in 2015

Did you know Seaford Community Cinema is now in it’s third year? In fact we are now half way through our third year of bringing film to local audiences. In the summer of 2014 we began a new relationship with Seaford Town Council to bring you the very first outdoor cinema event with The Lego Movie and for Seaford Christmas Magic in December we screened The Polar Express. With specially subsidised ticket prices of just £10 for a family of four, it’s no wonder we sold out. Subscribe to our monthly e-news via the website for programme information and details of similar events.

Our matinées are increasingly popular and our home at Barn Theatre has full disabled access and toilets. Disabled access is on Steyne Road.

Did you know we won an award?

In September 2014 we were thrilled to be commended by the British Federation of Film Societies for our voluntary work in bringing film to Seaford. You know that song, “Everything I do, I do it for you,” well basically that’s all about Seaford Community Cinema!

Discover our film programme below or find out more and book tickets on our website www.seafordcinema.org and at Seaford Tourist Centre

Seaford Natural History Society All the best for 2015 from Seaford Natural History Society – we look forward to seeing current and new members in the New Year. Our winter programme of indoor talks is well under way. It is an eclectic mix – so far it has included talks on Nature Reserves: What’s the Point; The Rathfinny Estate; Through the seasons in a Sussex woodland; Alfred Russell Wallace: The Man in Darwin’s Shadow and, an addition to our programme, a Christmas social for members only with a talk on Extinct Bird Watching by Michael Blencowe. We have two talks in January. On Tuesday 13th January, Andy Phillips will be telling us about how he developed the management plan for Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve (postponed from last year), and on 27th January, we are moving further afield with a talk by Bob Self on Madagascar and its Wildlife: The Eighth Continent. See the listing at the back of Seaford Scene for details. Visitors are very welcome – we ask for a donation of £3 (which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society). In the spring, summer and autumn, we arrange outdoor meetings, usually gentle strolls of around two to two and a half hours. All are welcome but this year we are keen to recruit people who are happy to lead walks, so do get in touch if you think you have something to offer. For more information about the society, please visit our website at www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or phone 01323 491964.

Out and about in January

Although there is plenty to see in the countryside in January (just look at the birdlife on the Cuckmere), going outside is less enticing than at other times of the year. Gardeners look at seed catalogues in the winter and for the last couple of years we have been reporting on the species we’ve found on our walks in the previous spring, summer and autumn – more “Indoors in January” than “out and about”. Individual members of the society have been recording what they see and reporting to relevant organisations for many years, but this is only the second year in its recent history that the society itself has sent reports to the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre (http://sxbrc.org.uk/).

12

We don’t record everything we see – just those things we think may be of interest. They can be rarities, like the Black Stork we saw flying over the Cuckmere in May or the Round Headed Rampion (photo left) we found near Beachy Head in July. Although it is relatively common locally, Round Headed Rampion (our county flower, the Pride of Sussex) is nationally scarce. We also report curiosities like the Ring Necked Parakeet (photo centre)a member spotted on a bird feeder in his garden in November and species which are cause for concern like Harlequin Ladybirds (photo right) – a threat to native ladybirds. Large quantities are also worth reporting like the profusion of Green Winged Orchids we saw at Montague Farm (and on Seaford Head) in the spring. This year we’ve got a good spread of plants, birds, spiders, butterflies and dragonflies, and a few snakes. Oddly, we don’t seem to record mammals. Perhaps we take badgers, foxes, mice, rats, rabbits for granted, but if we spotted a hedgehog we’d be inclined to report that because they are becoming much less common, even as road kill. Whilst it’s interesting to reflect on what we’ve seen, recording and reporting is more important than that. By providing records to the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre (and other organisations), we make a small contribution to a much wider enterprise. The records held by the Centre are used for many purposes – for example, a 250 page report of species known to exist on Seaford Head was used to help develop the management plan for the nature reserve there; and across Sussex the Centre provides information on request to developers so that they can avoid damaging sensitive habitats. More widely, reporting what we’ve seen contributes to knowledge about biodiversity. That is a topic in itself which we’ll come back to in another issue of Seaford Scene. In the meantime, anyone can get involved in reporting their finds. And if you see something you don’t recognise, there are lots of aids to identification – from field guides in book form to web pages like iSpot (www.ispotnature. org/). The web makes identification much easier because you can take a photo and send it to websites like iRecord (http://www.brc.ac.uk/irecord/) or iSpot to find out what you’ve seen.

Running Commentary... The world of running is no exception when it comes to using the New Year as an opportunity to set new goals. For those runners who are preparing for their very first marathon at London or Brighton for instance, one goal is already in their sights, with perhaps a second, unspoken goal of finishing within a certain time adding impetus to their training. Running in January, whatever the weather, will test your resolve quite severely as you tackle your running goals, and while running on your own is a vital part of your preparation, there is a lot to be gained from running with others. This is the very reason why the Seaford Striders Running Club was formed back in October 1986. The Club brought together seasoned runners, occasional runners and absolute beginners, and within that group were all ages, differing reasons for running and a wide range of running speeds. More than 28 years on, runners have come and gone but that same mix of runners is still there, still enjoying their running. Importantly, there continues to be a regular flow of new members joining the Club, helping to keep it vibrant and successful. The junior section attracts a large group of boys and girls from 8 years old and upwards, and there are times in the year when they link up with the senior runners for a “whole club” event. If you’re interested, further details can be found on the Club’s website or you could just turn up at 7pm on a Wednesday evening and join in. One of the more subtle benefits of running is the ability to think clearly during and after a run. Once you have settled into your rhythmic, comfortable pace and your legs seem to be on autopilot, the rubbish that fills your brain fades away, leaving you space to create and plan all manner of great ideas. Inventiveness has a free rein, allowing you to re-design your kitchen in your head, finish off your dissertation for University, plan a family holiday or re-run a particular marathon in your mind but this time effortlessly knocking 30 minutes off your best time. The list is endless. Running empowers the brain, and I believe that it should be a compulsory daily activity in all schools. Also, Lord Sugar’s television “apprentices” should be made to run 10 miles before embarking on their challenges. Albert Einstein once said that imagination is greater than knowledge so perhaps he came to that conclusion because he was a Victorian jogger in his youth. If you were one of the many runners who were not accepted for the London Marathon or you didn’t feel

quite ready for the Brighton Marathon, there are plenty of others all through the year. Even starting from scratch, the Beachy Head Marathon in October would be achievable, and a fantastic goal to set yourself. I hasten to add that not all members of the Striders run marathons. Some are happy for half-marathons to be their longest run, while others are content with 5 km and 10 km races, and some just run for fun and fitness. Seaford Live! raises £1,500 for the RNLI

Elise, age 17, was rated number 5 nationally for her age group last year. She reached the singles quarter finals and the doubles semi finals nationally and obtained her first World Junior Rankings points in Edinburgh last May. She is currently ranked 1054 in the world. This year Elise has concentrated on competing at international tournaments in the UK, Holland and Belgium. Elise will continue to focus on the junior international tennis circuit and will be playing the women’s British LTA tournaments. Just this month, Elise has won two ITF doubles titles, in Belgium and Liverpool. Earlier in the year she won her first ITF doubles title in Nottingham. She is also representing Sussex during the Women’s county championships, being played this weekend in Birmingham. Seaford Tennis Club Chairman, Clive Sparks said: “I was delighted to nominate Elise for this award. She is an inspiration to many of our young players and we are so pleased that she is getting the recognition she deserves both locally in Seaford and on the national tennis circuit. The highly successful “Seaford Live!’’festival in September 2014 raised £1,500 for the RNLI, our chosen charity this year. The generosity of audiences in pubs, clubs, churches, theatres and at street performances was celebrated on Tuesday 18th November at The Front Room in Seaford as Kevin Barber, Chair of Seaford Live 2014 (right), presented the cheque to Newhaven RNLI Chairman Alan Dempster. This year’s 15 day festival included 40+ events in and around Seaford including music, theatre, art, poetry, story telling and guided walks! Seaford Live! is currently looking for volunteers to help get involved with next year’s festival. We are constantly looking to include new and varied creative arts events in the Seaford Live! festival programme from people of all ages in and around the Seaford area. If you would like to help organise acts/events or offer your skills to the running of the festival please contact us: info@seafordlive.org

Seaford Christmas Magic Success!

On Saturday 6th December 2014, Seaford Christmas Magic returned, organised by Seaford Town Council and Seaford Chamber of Commerce, the Town Centre was filled by the sights and smells of Christmas. Kindly sponsored by Seaford Head School and Sixth Form Centre, the day proved to be a huge success, enjoyed by so many from Seaford and from outside of the town, which was blessed with sunny weather.

There were over 30 stalls providing a vast array of produce, with charity and fundraising stalls, hot cuisine from around the world and exclusive Christmas goodies; there was something for everyone. The live entertainment organised by Seaford Live! with help from Splashpoint Music was well received by the crowds who gathered from 10am to come and support local talent in their own town. Performances were given by Sprung, Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors, Rosie Moore, Mel Hayes, Koan Brothers, Archway Choir, Seaford Schools Together, and Stardance. There was entertainment from a Juggling stilt walker, fire breathers/eaters and the return of the favourite majestical Ice Fairy who graced our streets once again to wow the crowds; all sponsored by Toytown, Deans Place, Reid Briggs, Housemartins and JXP Consultancy. A Town Council spokesman said, “We would also like to thank Sussex Events for their professional service and their continued efforts in making this year’s event run smoothly! And Seahaven FM made such a wonderful part of our team with public announcements, live broadcast and interviews throughout the day.” Seaford Schools Together and Seaford Family Focus Group provided outstanding indoor activities and crafts at the Clinton Centre sponsored by Toytown and Splashpoint Music, where the lanterns were also made for the parade in the afternoon, and even the Gnomes’ Grotto was open for the visitors. The Lantern Parade was a wonderful experience for the families and children who took part but also for the visitors to the event who were able to experience something new for 2014. Seaford Library and Seaford Community Cinema also joined in the day and entertained our visitors with story times at the Library and the movie The Polar Express shown at Seaford Cinema.

Seaford Lifeguards supported the event this year with exceptional cover for first aid throughout the day; and the CTLA Park and Ride service was running throughout the day to transport visitors in comfort, which was kindly sponsored by Swindells. Also a big thanks to Seaford Rotary and Seaford and Newhaven Roundtable who transported Santa, his sleigh and his grotto, finishing off the event with the switching on of the Town Centre lights. The winners of the Best Dressed Window Competition were Premier Travel in 1st place, Foam and Fabric in 2nd place and last but not least Wynnes in 3rd place. The Town Mayor, Mark Brown, said, “The Mayor and Mayoress of Seaford Cllr Mark and Mrs Vera Brown offer their most sincere thanks to all those businesses, charities and other Seaford organisations and volunteers who took part in the Seaford Magic event, and to the town council staff who organised the day and managed it so successfully. What a fantastic day. I believe we have found a format that will last far into the future.” To all who volunteered their time and efforts to ensure that this event was a success, Seaford Town Council and Seaford Chamber of Commerce would like to give their warm thanks and congratulations. We look forward to another wonderful event and team next year. If you would like to leave feedback, comments, any pictures you many have of the event, or if you have ideas of what to do next year and would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you, so please visit www.seafordxmasmagic.uk. A short survey can be taken on Seaford Town Council, Seaford Christmas Magic websites and facebook page shortly.

Counselling and Psychotherapy with

Jefh Davies

Many of us feel low on occasions, or depressed, or anxious about things we previously took in our stride. Others may find the stress of work, school, or family life difficult to cope with. Or perhaps encounter problems in relationships with friends, partners or relatives. Sometimes we may feel that these issues are preventing us from getting on with our lives. We may feel confused, helpless, or angry without really knowing why. We may feel lost, frightened, or even ‘out of control’. For many, these feelings can be quite overwhelming at times:

I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist, providing one-to-one counselling in Seaford.

“I don’t know what’s happened to me”, “I never used to be like this”, “It’s not like me”, “I should be able to cope with this”, “I don’t know why I do these things, think these things, feel these things...”

Counselling provides an opportunity to talk through your feelings, to be listened to and to find your way out and on to a fuller, more balanced and enjoyable life. The Salts Development Plan, adopted by Seaford Town Council The Salts Development Plan produced by Seaford Town Council was recently presented to Council for adoption as a policy document. The projects within the development plan prioritise proposed improvements to children’s play space, tennis courts, Skate Park and all other facilities at The Salts. In addition Seaford Town Council will work in partnership with sports clubs and voluntary organisations to improve quality in all areas of the park. The development plan sets out to improve the areas that the community appreciates the most about The Salts, as well as introducing new ideas and restoring the park as a place to be proud of. The proposed projects will also ensure that The Salts will reach modern standards for design, safety, access and inclusion. Members positively welcomed the plan which was officially adopted, enabling the next stages of the scheme to be developed. Highest priority is the Children’s Play space, whereby local residents and families will soon be invited to select their favourite design from a selection of manufacturers who are experienced in producing a play space of such a high profile. Seaford Town Council has limited funds available at this stage for the projects, but will apply for outside grants, as well as seeking the maximum amount of planning gain funds held by LDC for Seaford. Other elements include a variety of landscaping projects such as a footpath/ cycle path around the outside of the main fields, as well as picnic areas and viewing areas for events and other entertainment such as outdoor movies. The Mayor of Seaford, Mark Brown, said, “it is a proud moment for Seaford Town Council to secure a long term future for The Salts by adopting a more strategic approach to our future investments.”

Mother’s Ruin Sorbet

by Julian O’Vegetables

After the last month’s Vodka soaked Bloody Mary tomatoes, I thought I would carry the boozy theme into January. New Year is party time too, after all. This simple recipe can be served as a quirky light dessert, but I also like to serve it at dinner parties as a between course palate cleanser. Whenever it is served, it should be eaten with care. The frozen, zingy sharpness of this sorbet will send shock-waves through your tooth enamel, into your nerves and straight into your skull. But don’t let that put you off!

Gin & Tonic Sorbet

Dissolve 6oz of caster sugar in ¾ pint of water. Add the zest and juice of 2 limes and boil for 5 minutes. Leave to cool and then strain. Stir in ¾ pint of tonic water and 6 tablespoons of gin. Freeze in a shallow container. When frozen, process in a blender and return to the freezer. Repeat a second time. Do not try this recipe using an ice-cream maker, I did and found the result disappointing. It is a bit of a slog, blending and refreezing, but well worth it in the end. Double up on the quantities and have plenty for later. Enjoy!

St Wilfrid’s Hospice – one year on… Although St Wilfrid’s has been open in Eastbourne since 1983, it’s only just celebrated its first year in its new building. Liz Silvester, the PR & Communications Officer, takes us on a tour. There was a lot of sadness and many fond farewells when the old hospice building, Mill Gap House, was sold at auction in November, but the award-winning new building provides more beds and better facilities, enabling care for many more patients well into the future. With the catchment area extending up to Uckfield and Heathfield, east to Pevensey and west to Seaford, Glynde and Ringmer, the hospice looked after over 1,000 patients last year. Only 15% of funding comes from the NHS, and the rest is provided by community funding. The hospice stands

WESTERLEIGH NURSING HOME

Personalised care and support in a homely environment

as testimony to the love, compassion and generosity of our supporters. So, a huge thanks to you! The building, set between a large Sainsbury’s supermarket and the Park campus of Sussex Downs College, is entered through automatic glass doors that lead straight into the heart of the hospice, The Street. Here you’ll find a bright, modern café serving hot drinks, lunches, snacks and cakes, and all are welcome. There’s no signing in required, no big reception desk, just a bright, friendly welcome and the aroma of fresh coffee and at lunchtime, there’s often a local band or choir accompanying visitors. To the left of The Street is Wellbeing, our day facility, which has treatment and counselling rooms, an art room, a lounge and a gym – where physio and t’ai chi classes, among others, take place. At the back of the hospice and wrapped around the beautiful central Courtyard Garden, are the inpatient bedrooms. There are 20 in all, each with an ensuite shower room and a view of, and access to, the garden, solely for the use of patients and their families. The Courtyard Garden is not the only one: there’s the Retreat Garden, a small Japanese-style garden, to the side of the hospice, the larger Wellbeing Garden at the front of the building and the Orchard Garden with an abundance of new trees at the back.

Further Accolades For Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors

After winning the Spark Award 2014 a fortnight ago, Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) picked up further recognition at the East Sussex Youth Awards 2014 on Saturday 29th November at the Winter Gardens in Eastbourne. SMTJ performed as the finale to the evening, which was packed with entertainment and inspirational stories, and won the Arts and Media category, with 18-year-old member, Rebecca Woolven, winning the award for Young Volunteer. Guests at the ceremony, including Eastbourne MP. Stephen Lloyd, watched the pop video collaboration between SMTJ and local band “We Are Lions” where young people created canvasses which were then put together to form a heart mural. Many of the canvasses were sold at the event and over £250 was raised for the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The video has already had over fourteen thousand views and can be watched at http:// bit.ly/1kJVApl Photo: SMTJ accepting their award on stage.

When We Are Married Seaford Little Theatre

A clever man, that JB Priestley: rather than set this play contemporaneously with its writing in 1938 he went back 30 years, allowing his audience to believe, if they wanted to fool themselves, that he was directing his ironic wit at the Edwardians. The play concerns three couples who were all married on the same day in the same chapel. They have gathered at the Helliwells’ home to celebrate their silver anniversary. When it is disclosed that the minister who conducted the service was not qualified for weddings they are horror struck. Whatever will the neighbours think? How will they conceal this 25-year lapse when a nosey cook and nosey newshounds are all too ready to spread gossip? And if they are not married, do they still wish to live in unsatisfactory menages? It was good to see some new young faces playing ageappropriate roles. Director Mary Young never missed a comedic trick, and I can’t help wondering if she gave private lessons to Katie Hargreaves, her granddaughter, playing the maid whose opening lines – a recitation of Bake Off goodies delivered fast and deadpan – establish the smugness of the hosts and their friends. Also making her Seaford debut was Katherine Whinn, pertly playing the amour of chapel organist Gerald Forbes (the able James Collins). It is he who drops the bombshell via a letter written by the minister, played with great verve by John Gibbins, another welcome newcomer. Whinn and Forbes are, in real life, to wed, but we can be sure that they won’t

38

be using the Helliwells as role models in a relationship where the pompous Alderman, crisply played by society stalwart, Roland Boorman, dictates to his meek wife, portrayed by Ann Mabey, nor the Parkers, where Dug Godfrey holds the stage as a self-important windbag dragging Sue Shephard in his wake, nor the Soppitts, where a cowed Dennis Picott is kept under by a formidably dominant Patricia Pape. Priestley would surely have appreciated the self-satisfaction shown by all six in the delightful set pieces staged by Young. Priestley’s supporting characters provide more comedy, and Cathryn Parker as the cook, who overhears the scandal and threatens to pass it on was wonderful. So too was Douglas Wragg as the boozy photographer, ably supported by reporter Stephen Newberry. Josie Hobbs brought blowsy loucheness to barmaid Lottie with whom the Alderman has dallied in Blackpool. All the cast are to be commended for mastering the Yorkshire accent and the gusto with which they played their roles, but the greatest honour belongs to Mary Young for her direction of this revival, in which, incidentally, she played Maria Helliwell in 1985. As the photographer’s flashgun captures in freeze frame the recreated wedding picture of the three couples marking 25 years of harnessed-in-wedlock respectability – a registrar was present after all – and Katie Hargreaves drops her tray, we could leave the theatre glad, in the 21st century, to be free of such constraints. THE STANDARD OF ST GEORGE AT REMEMBRANCE In 2012, the then President of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George, the late Don Mabey MBE, purchased and presented a new Standard of St George to the branch. Immediately this was taken into use at branch functions and other events, both military and civil. It is usually carried by our bearer, Frank Holland, but this year he was committed to carrying the Standard of his Regimental Association. As Branch Chairman, and being a former RBL bearer, I volunteered to take over the duty for this year’s Remembrance events. The first was the Mayor of Seaford’s First World War Concert on Saturday 7th November at the Seaford Baptist Church. Whilst waiting to march the Standard on for the act of Remembrance I realised that our Standard had great significance when thinking about the First World War. The First World War was not just fought on the Western Front but also in the Middle East. There, many battles occurred between German backed Turkish forces and British Forces drawn from this country and many others of our Empire and Commonwealth. The Army Commander was General Allenby. In the first week of December 1917 our Army was in sight of Jerusalem, a heavily fortified city, which Allenby could not leave as a threat to his rear if he went round it. He could not however bring himself to order the Artillery to fire on the Holy City. He was saved from making that decision when three officers representing the Turkish Commander emerged under a flag of truce to inform the British that Jerusalem had been declared an open city and that the Turks would withdraw without any battle. It appears that the night before, the Turkish Commander had been reading an ancient prophecy that Jerusalem would be taken from them by “Allah Nebi” – God’s prophet! He saw the connection between that prophecy and the name of his opponent, General Allenby!

44

On the 9th December, they withdrew. In open order, the British Army advanced to the gate of the City. At its head, both mounted, were General Allenby and Colonel T E Laurence. Ahead of them was a soldier carrying the Banner of St George and of England. At the gate they dismounted, removed their caps and walked into the City. They walked bare headed through the streets to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where they knelt and prayed. It is significant that Allenby chose the Cross of St George to lead in the victorious army. St George is not only Patron Saint of England but also of Soldiers. The Concert at the Baptist Church was very moving with poetry and music, all of which brought home the significance of commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the dreadful war that had been declared on 4th August 1914. The following day, Remembrance Sunday I was privileged to join with others at the Peacehaven Remembrance parade and service. There, the Cross of St George was a proud sight and received compliments from many attending the event. Here of course, as at many places through the Country, we were remembering and honouring those of the First and Second World Wars, as well as other conflicts before and since. The last event was on Remembrance Day, Tuesday 11th November, at the Seaford Cemetery, where those who died during War were remembered. This was attended by the Vice Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and representatives from Canadian Forces, West Indian and Irish Associations, along with the Deputy Mayor of Seaford. I was so proud, by the presence of the Cross of St George, to do my bit to help achieve one of the objects of our Royal Society, “To keep fresh in the memory of those in all walks of life who have served England or the Commonwealth in the past”. We will remeber them. By Bob Peedle MBE. Chairman of the Seahaven Branch,The Royal Society of St George. RARE OR UNUSUAL VEGETABLES FOR THE TABLE

Good King Henry (Chenopodium Bonus-Henricus). Good King Henry (sometimes known as Lincolnshire or Poor Man’s Asparagus) is a vegetable that can have great merit even in very poor soil and the worst of sites. It is a perennial and related to the spinach family. The leaves can be cooked as spinach but must be twice cooked in fresh water to remove excess bitterness. It is said that the best parts are the tender young shoots and flower buds which hide amongst the foliage. When cooked these taste like asparagus. Sow seed in March and plant out fifteen inches apart. The first year only produces a few flower buds so just eat the leaves. The second year the crop is much larger. In the autumn clip off the yellowing leaves and remove to the compost heap. Give a good mulch for winter protection. If you want to increase your stock, divide the clumps in spring.Seed is available from Kings Seed, Victoriana Nursery or on Ebay.

verybody grows fuchsias either in the garden or in the greenhouse, it is one of our most popular plants. But beware, Fuchsia Gall Mite has arrived in Seaford. These mites infest the plant’s shoot tips which will be severely damaged and will prevent further development. The mites are microscopic and specifically attack fuchsias, sucking the sap and causing abnormal growth. Shoot tips become swollen, often with a yellowish green or red colour. Flowers will be deformed and fall. The mite has become most prevalent on the south coast during 2014 and has now been reported in areas around Seaford. There is no recommended chemical control so it is better

to destroy all infested plants as soon at it is identified. The mites travel by crawling around, or may be wind blown. They may also hitch a ride on other insects. They are most active from spring to autumn but will over-winter on hardy plants. Always water fuchsia pots not the foliage or stems. This will reduce the chance of spreading any problems. Seaford Gardening Club The Christmas festivities are now over and we must face the weather of January and February, but look forward to the Spring, which is just around the corner. I wonder what 2015 holds in store for us all? Let us hope it is both a healthy and prosperous one. Ian Everest, our speaker at our November meeting, gave a very interesting talk entitled ‘From the Sussex Ox to Fordson Major’. He explained how the Sussex oxen were used on farms up to the 1920s to do all the heavy manual jobs. They were brought down from Wales to Sussex, which proved to be a huge task. Ian had some lovely old photos of his relatives etc. doing all the running of various farms in and around our area, including, Exceat, Gayles, Chyngton and Bishopstone (where he was brought up). The oxen could be used for almost any job, even moving a windmill to a new site because residents complained about the noise of the ‘sweeps’! Oxen started working at 2 years old and new additions were put in the middle of a team of six so they became used to others. They needed shoeing

regularly which was mastered by throwing the beast on his side, being sat upon by several farm workers to keep it still, and fitting the new shoes. Children would come and watch as it proved to be quite an occasion. A profile of Mr Gorringe followed, as he was the tenant farmer of three of the farms in the area and was a great supporter of the oxen. After they were retired in the 1920s the Shire horse was used for some years. One horse had the strength of two oxen. Then the steam engines and tractors came into use. One of the main tractors was called the Fordson Major and was produced in several local factories. Ian’s old photos were unique and so interesting to see. His talk kept us enthralled for over an hour so we shall certainly have him back again in the future as he speaks on several topics. Our next talk will be on Wednesday 28th January 2015, when Glenda Law will speak to us on ‘Scotland the Beautiful’. The evening will commence at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (please use the front door opposite Tesco). Visitors are welcome for a fee of £2. If you wish to join for the year the cost will be £10. There are no extra charges. Refreshments are available and we occasionally have a raffle. More information is available by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or by visiting the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/SGC. You are most welcome to share an enjoyable evening with us.

Chalvington Fields – A Fantastic Community Effort

gave invaluable help, and trees were funded by The Big Tree Plant and Seaford Town Council. Among the volunteers were members of the Rotary Club, Seaford Natural History Society, Seaford Allotment Society, Friends of Tidemills and LR Garden Services.

As Seaford’s effort for National Tree Week on 29th November, 2014 1,000 saplings of mixed native species were planted at Chalvington Fields. Members of the public of all ages turned up to help throughout the morning. Keith Blackburn, Chair of Seaford Tree Wardens, said: “This was a fantastic day, and we were delighted with the number of volunteers who came to help. We were really lucky with the weather. The recent rain meant the ground was damp, but Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day. We managed to plant all 1,000 trees by lunchtime.” Norman Baker MP, several local councillors and their families were among those attending. Chris Bibb of Lewes District Council

We shall shortly be contacting residents in Rother Road, Downs View Road and Hillside Avenue, with a view to planting of street trees in February. On the vexed question of replacing trees in town, where verges have been tarred over, we are hoping, in co-operation with the Highway Authority, to dig at least one experimental tree-pit and replant a tree to see what this costs. To find out more about Seaford Tree Wardens, or to help in future tree plantings, please contact Margery Diamand on 873475 / margerydiamand@hotmail.com or go to http://seafordtreewardens.wordpress.com Photos top: Leslie Ward, Hollie Townson, Lee Roberts, Millie Roberts Kaylen Streeta, Simba the dog, below: Paul Baker, Isla Sitwell and Eddie Collict.

If the red pandas at Drusilla’s Park, Alfriston, have been seen smacking their lips it’s because they have been enjoying particularly tasty bamboo shoots. June drove over from Seaford with a boot load of fresh cuttings from the banks of the wildlife pond at Seaford Community Garden in the Crouch in response to a plea from the keeper. James had been doing a sterling job cutting back our rampaging plants when June heard that the zoo was always happy to receive helpings of the pandas’ favorite food, so if you have bamboo that is behaving outrageously then get in touch with the zoo on 01323 874100. Red pandas mostly eat bamboo, but they will also eat grass, roots and occasionally some insects and rodents. The species is classed as rare, so there was jubilation all round

when twins named Mya and Anmar were born at the zoo in September. Head Keeper, Mark Kenward commented: “Panda cubs are very playful by nature and our two are no exception. Mya and Anmar have great personalities and I suspect they will provide a great deal of entertainment.” So keep that bamboo coming… Back to the garden, and sheltered from the worst of winter in the classroom, horticulturalist Tricia and herb grower Bob gave a well-attended lecture entitled “What is a Herb?” Tricia’s answer: “They can be a herbaceous plant (its top dies down over winter), but they can also be annual, bi-annual, perennial or even a bay tree! You can use all parts (seeds, leaves, flowers and roots) depending on the herbs and the time of year. Before the advent of modern drugs, plant extracts were used by the local apothecary to treat illnesses, and aromatherapy is still used today, with the power of herbs being utilised variously in cosmetics, tinctures and balms etc. Herbs can also be decorative, as in knot and scented gardens. A word of caution however care should be taken when picking herbs in the wild; be sure you know what you are helping yourself to as getting it wrong could damage your health.” John is busy constructing a calendar list of things to do in our gardens, to be posted up in the classroom for all to benefit from. And we couldn’t help observing that our lovely new chairs are a little chilly on the bottom in winter, so if anyone has a cushion or two that can be spared they would be very welcome! We are joining 3VA, the Lewes-based charity that beings volunteer groups together and helps them find sponsorship and aid facilitation. Meanwhile in the cosy polytunnel we have been potting up lots of healthy-looking polyanthus that were kindly donated for sale. To all those who have supported us in the past year, our visitors and helpers, we extend the warmest Happy New Year greetings and hope to see you old timers and newcomers alike in 2015 on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 12.30pm. And with our new banners at every entrance you can’t miss us! Photos: James with the newly cut back bamboo (left), Red panda at Drusilla’s and bamboo (right).

www.davidjordan.co.uk www.rightmove.co.uk Selling and letting property in Seaford and surrounding towns & villages

6 Clinton Place, Seaford BN25 1NL

With Christmas behind us we look forward to the year ahead and would welcome the opportunity on behalf of David Jordan Estate Agents we wish all the residents of Seaford a happy and healthy New Year! This is an ideal opportunity to explain the reform to Stamp Duty Land Tax and how it affects purchasers and sellers alike. As it only came into effect last month we thought it would be good idea to clarify how it could benefit your next move. On 3rd December 2014 the Chancellor, as part of the Autumn Statement, announced that the government would discard the “badly designed slab tax”, which delivered savings for 98% of home buyers.

Mr Osborne has announced that there will be no SDLT on the first £125,000, 2% between £125,000 and £250,000, 5% between £250,000 and £925,000, 10% between £925,000 and to £1.5m, and 12% on everything above. In Seaford this would be a massive boon with the average price sold by David Jordan Estate Agents in 2014 was £292,286.00. At the other end of the spectrum those buying a home at the £2m will pay £50,000 more under the new policy. In fact it starts to get more expensive once you breach the £1.1 million mark. Mortgage Lenders, estate agents and developers alike have been applying pressure to the government to address the stamp duty “slab” system, as the policy used to jump from 1% to 3% at the £250,000 threshold. This threshold of 3% had not been changed since March 2000 and nationally house prices have increased in value by 139% during that time, catching first and second time movers in the previous bracket.

6 Clinton Place, Seaford BN25 1NL The result was that it had a distorting effect on the housing market, because a property is very difficult to sell at prices just above each threshold, for example, £250,001.

The New system The tax calculated is on a graduated system based on the brackets below: You pay nothing below £125,000, 2% on the value of the property between £125,000 and £250,000 and 5% on the value of the property above £250,000. The other property price levels this applies to are 10% on property above £925,000 and 12% on property above £1.5 million plus. Here are examples of some properties on the market where the future purchaser would benefit greatly from the Stamp Duty changes:

Pelham Road, Seaford (above). This charming one bedroom flat offering off road parking and distant sea views at £125,000 has no stamp duty liability making it a perfect first time buy or investment purchase.

Hamsey Lane, Seaford (left). A delightful 2 bedroom cottage style bungalow situated within a grade II listed development offering fantastic walks with easy access to the South Downs National Park. A great property for retirement or as a holiday home, it is well worth viewing. With an asking price of £264,950, previous stamp duty would cost £7,948.50. The new stamp duty system makes the cost now £3,247.50 with a MASSIVE saving of £4701.00! (£0 + £2,500 + £747.50). The Lords, Seaford (right). A well presented five bedroom detached house situated in a soughtafter residential cul-de-sac towards the outskirts of Seaford. Stamp Duty would have cost £21,000 and will now cost £16,250, a saving of £4,750! (£0 + £2,500 + £13,750).

With these massive savings on the cost of moving, make 2015 YOUR year for a successful move. Please contact us, whether buying or selling, to receive the best advice and experience.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

HAYDN THE CREATION SATURDAY 2 MAY 2015

Rehearsals start Monday 19th January Our 2015 season kicks off mid January with rehearsals starting at Cradle Hill School. Now is the time to shake off those cold wet Winter blues and get the lungs working, singing out with vim and vigour! Come along and join us and feel good about yourself again. Give it a try for a week or two before you sign up. No audition necessary, all we require is a tuneful voice and a love of good music. Give our Secretary a ring on 01323 482387 to register your interest and for further details. Haydn composed The Creation between 1796 and 1798, inspired by hearing Handel’s oratorios. It was written for Soprano, Tenor and Bass soloists, chorus and full symphony orchestra, with a libretto which draws on the Book of Genesis, Psalms and John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

The work is a joyous dramatisation of God’s creation; it takes us from Chaos through the creation of light, exquisite depictions of birds and other creatures to the creation of Man and the Garden of Eden. The Creation is one of the greatest choral works in the repertoire and will be a major undertaking for the choir, to be sung with orchestral accompaniment. It will be the first performance for the Choral Society of this demanding masterpiece and will be an event not to be missed, so be sure to make a note in your diaries. The retiring collection following our Autumn Concert for The St James’ Trust (Seaford) amounted to the princely sum of £396. 96p. On behalf of the Trust we would like to wholeheartedly thank all those gave so generously.

We would like to wish our friends and followers a very peaceful and harmonious New Year

Sussex Wildlife Trust Education Development Manager, Mike Murphy, said, “Gaining their Forest School qualification has inspired Centre staff and shown them how to use the natural environment to create fantastic learning opportunities for children and their parents. We are proud to be an approved member of the Buy With Confidence scheme run by East Sussex Trading Standards.

The younger models then entered the catwalk modelling a range of children’s wear followed by the adults modelling a range of ladies and men’s wear. It was a great evening for everyone involved, with a raffle, an auction of a cake made by Seahaven Storehouse followed by nibbles and wine. The Mayor would like to thank Matt Evans, Manager at M&Co, and all of the staff for hosting this event and to all the models who took part to make this event possible. The total raised from the sales of tickets and raffle was a fantastic £599.96! The Mayor would also like to thank the Bond School of Dance who filmed the event to produce DVDs, which will be sold with all sales also going towards the Mayors charities. If you would like to donate to either of the Mayor’s charities, please email Mark Brown C/o Seaford Town Council on admin@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk Photo: Members of the Bond School of Dance.

EAST BLATCHINGTON LECTURES

ACCESS REPAIRS REPAIRS TO:

Five speakers describing five very different topics have been booked for the next series of the hugely successful East Blatchington Lectures.

WASHING MACHINES

They include a successful author, the curious tale of a dead monarch, a man who likes to make a lot of noise, an artist who stunned the world, and a novelist who once wrote for Charles Dickens.

DISHWASHERS ELECTRIC COOKERS

The lectures are held at St Peter’s Church, in Belgrave Road, Seaford, on the first Tuesday of the month, and are open to everyone. The dates are:

TUMBLE DRYERS

April 7th – the art historian Kay Blackburn will talk about Donatello, the greatest sculptor of the early Renaissance. His statue of David, in marble, was a move away from traditional religious imagery, one of the first nude statues of the Renaissance.

May 5th

– the speaker will be the Town Crier Peter White, talking about town criers generally, his job in particular, and about Bellmen.

June 2nd – Carolyn Lambert from Sussex University describes the novelist known as Mrs Gaskell who early in her career wrote for Charles Dickens’ Household Words and All the Year Round, and went on to publish Cranford, Wives and Daughters, and Life of Charlotte Brontë.

– a real coup for the series, with the chairman of the Richard III Society, Dr Philip Stone, talking about the work of the society, and his views on the much-maligned king.

August 4th

– the series ends in style by welcoming Simon Parke, the local author and crime writer. All the lectures start at 2.30pm. Tickets are £5, including refreshments, available from the Seaford estate agents Newberry Tully on Church Street. ** CORRECTION: The talk by Kay Blackburn on ‘Nativity in Art’ that was given before Christmas and was in the December issue of Seaford Scene, should not be confused with the East Blatchington lecture series. activities and adventure trips (photo below). We were also invited and attended the Seahaven Academy Foundation Day. It was very interesting to see what some of our money can achieve as we support some activities in the school. We continue to drive our minibuses to help the older people to get to their clubs. We regularly drive for the Good Companions, The Inner Light and Hard of Hearing Clubs and also several church groups – the Crossways Ladies and Encompass (St Luke’s Church). We don’t sit around much wondering what to do – Lions take up a lot of our time! If you have time and would like to help your community give us a call. The Club meets at 8pm on the fourth Thursday of each month at the White Lion Hotel, Seaford. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, i.e. if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance). Call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Unfortunately though, due to unreported damage to one of the buses, we may have to restrict their usage.

Happy New Year from Seaford Twinning Association!

For the New Year the STA is planning another informal German conversation event at the White Lion pub on Wednesday 28th January, 7 to 10pm and a Beetle Drive at 7.30pm on Saturday 17th January at St Peter’s Hall. Both these events are open to the public! Ring Liz on 01323 896315 to book for the Beetle Drive. £2 for members, £4 for non-Members, plus bring a plate of food to share and your own drink. Beetling-enthusiasts are most welcome, whether they have an interest in Twinning or not! The Twinning Association had a busy run up to Christmas. They held a quiz and fish-and-chips evening at the Council Chamber with Chairman, Peter White, asking the questions. The Plauschgruppe (German Conversation) enthusiasts in STA had one of their occasional lunchtime meets in December at The Gallery, the new face of the Sailing Club café on the promenade. They met for informal chat over coffee or food. STA also held their first-ever Oktoberfest, a little late in the year, and 24 members enjoyed German food, wine, beer and dancing. Members contributed some dishes, whilst Seaford-based German caterers “Selcher” run by the Müller family, provided the professional flair! Also a small group of hardy travellers visited the German Christmas Market in Canterbury, and returned laden with presents. And as part of Seaford’s Christmas Magic, STA served their traditional Stollen Cake at a stall in the town, with a complimentary glass of warming Glühwein to wash it down with. Anyone interested in joining STA’s language or social activities or hosting German visitors for a weekend in June should email Peter on peterwhitecrier@hotmail. com or ring Liz on 01323 896315. A Decade at Drusillas for Zooper Volunteer Janet International Volunteers Day is held on 5th December annually, recognising the valuable contribution volunteers make within their communities. For Seaford resident, Janet Tidey, volunteering is a huge part of everyday life. For the last ten years she has been helping out at her local zoo, Drusillas Park, returning each week to assist and spread a conservation message. Janet commented, “I absolutely love it. I volunteered at my local swimming club for 28 years, but in 2004 I fancied a change and applied to the scheme at Drusillas. It gets me out and about and I have learnt so much from the keepers; I find out something new each time.” As part of this role, Janet helps raise awareness and oversees the zoo’s popular walkthrough enclosures. She also helps out in the Discovery Centre, educating people about custom seized animal artefacts, although her favourite place is alongside the 12 playful residents of Lemurland. “Over the years I have witnessed so

many funny events and I often go home smiling to myself. The lemurs are so cheeky, they are always up to no good; they keep me entertained,” said Janet. “My favourite part is meeting new people; I get to chat to the public and pass on all the knowledge I have built up. The worst part is working outside in the rain and cold, but being with the animals makes it all worthwhile.” Education Officer and Volunteer Coordinator, Carla Dray, commented, “Janet has been a loyal asset to the volunteer team for the past 10 years. Living locally she is able to help us out most weekdays and has in fact given her time on 174 occasions so far this year, which to my knowledge is a record number. We hope that Janet continues to volunteer here for as long as possible, not just because of her passion and commitment to the role, but also because she keeps us well stocked up in cake!” As for Janet, she has no intention of leaving anytime soon! Despite being a mum of six and grandmother to eight children, she plans to continue at the zoo for the foreseeable future: “I can’t wait to meet the new armadillo that arrives in January and I am hoping to spend some time looking after the reindeer this Christmas too. All the time I can drive I will carry on volunteering; I can’t imagine life without it.” To find out more about Drusillas Park and the Volunteer Scheme visit www.drusillas.co.uk or telephone 01323 874100.

Rotary Club of Seaford Senior Citizens’ Party

Another November, another party for thirty-four of Seaford’s older residents. Thanks to St James’ Trust for allowing us to use their premises again, and to all the volunteers who provided transport, produced the excellent food and drink, waited at table and performed many other functions before, during and after the event. Seaford Mayor, Mark Brown, with wife, Vera, graced the event and drew all of the raffle tickets for the lucky winners after sampling the food and drink, aided and abetted by Seaford Rotary Club President, Ray Hazan, with wife, Robbie. The invited guests, as well as helpers and Mayor Mark, were royally entertained during the two-hour event by vocalists Margot Miller and Graham Tubb, accompanied by pianist, Rosemary Kemp. Judging from the volume of the singalongs, a great time was had by all.

Venture Scouts Alice Smith and Tom Laidlaw came to a Club lunch in November to receive cheques from the Club to help with the

Alice takes up the story: “ I have been looking forward to help staff a World Jamboree since participating at the Swedish Jamboree in 2011, to help other people experience what I have. To fund the trip I have held raffles and tombolas, completed a sponsored walk and have very kindly received help from Seaford Rotary Club.” Photos from top: “Grease,” courtesy of Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors, l-r Mayor Mark Brown, Club President Ray Hazan, and Vice President (and self-appointed Head Waiter) Peter Fenwick. Seaford Head welcomes it’s Sheep! Seaford Town Council and Sussex Wildlife Trust are pleased to confirm the arrival of 20 sheep on the Seaford Head Nature Reserve! They follow in the footsteps of the three cattle who up until recently were grazing another area of the reserve and have made a notable difference to the site. The sheep have been introduced on to the Head as part of the management plan that was commissioned by Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve Committee to provide a guide on the best possible management for the nature reserve over the next five years, 2013 to 2017. The site is degrading due to overgrazing in some areas and a lack of grazing in other areas. Sussex Wildlife Trust took over the management of the 83 hectare site for Seaford Town Council at the beginning of June 2013. Coordinating the conservation work at Seaford Head is the Trust’s Assistant Reserves Officer, Sarah Quantrill. There are 20 Herdwick sheep which will graze the area for a few months to help control the vegetation. There is temporary electric fencing around the area. The sheep are checked regularly. Please report any problems to the Grazier on 07884 496807. All dogs should be kept on a lead in the vicinity of the sheep. Thank you for your co-operation. Anyone wanting more information on the nature reserve or with an interest in joining one of the voluntary groups that currently help care for the reserve and monitoring of the livestock, should in the first instance speak to Sarah Quantrill on 01273 492630 or 07824 151935.

Seaford Kurlers Well we have made it to another year – so welcome to 2015. May it be a good one for us all. I hope that you all enjoyed the treats that Christmas brought with it and that you were able to enjoy the good company of family and friends. If you belong to the vast number of people who make New Year resolutions, then I hope you are successful in keeping them. Many make the pledge to get more active and maybe get more out of life, and see also what there is to have a go at. If you want more physical and social activity, then come along and see Seaford Kurlers in action at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford. It is a ‘sport for all’. New Age Kurling can be played and enjoyed by any age group and any fitness level. We have aids for any disability that you may have. We are a mixed bunch of people from all walks of life. You would be amazed to learn about the interesting lives that some have had. The game is basically quite simple, with the rules and scoring not unlike bowls. We have annual events such as Christmas lunches, day trips out, in-house competitions and theatre visits. We also are active in the community, usually in conjunction with Wave Leisure. We assist them at their

We also help other clubs if they wish to hold a kurling competition. We have, for the past few years, done the scoring for the Seahaven Lionesses at their annual sporting tournament. All the events are great fun. I cannot praise Wave Leisure Trust enough for the amount of help that they give to the community with regard to staying fit, learning new activities and being welcoming to social groups. The atmosphere is great and it is very encouraging to see very young children being given the chance to stay active and be socially involved in their community. At the time of writing, we have yet to have our Christmas lunch at the Moorings restaurant in Pevensey and as it’s a New Year, members will be hopefully renewing their annual membership this month. The annual subscription is £5 and the weekly subs are £2.50. If you wish to come and see what we are all about, then come along any Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm to the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford. Your first visit is free. Our first club meeting in 2015 is JANUARY 6th at 2pm. Contact – Secretary June Wood, tel. 01323 895376. Email: sally1989@tiscali.co.uk

MEECHING AMATEUR DRAMATICS presents “A Chorus of Disapproval”

Family history made easy for you Let me help you discover your ancestry!

by Alan Ayckbourn, directed by Wendy Gostock A diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local amateur light operatic society. By accident rather than by design (in fact, by not saying “no” to anything, be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company or an offer of illicit sex) he advances from a small part to the lead. Parallels are skilfully drawn between The Beggar’s Opera and the day to day activities of the society which is performing it. The production is at Meeching Hall, Fort Road, Newhaven. Dates: 15th, 16th, 17th January and 22nd, 23rd, 24th January at 7.45pm. For the first time we are offering Sunday Matinees on 18th and 25th January at 2.30pm. Tickets £8 available at Meeching Estate Agents, High Street, Newhaven. Tel: 01273 515566

Gellux is perfect for natural nails, on fingers or toes for instant, long lasting, vibrant colour. The polish dries instantly - no waiting for polish to dry means no accidental smudges and a long lasting glossy finish. Gellux is a hybrid between traditional nail polish and salon gels, it is applied like a polish but with a hard wearing chip, scratch and fade proof finish that lasts up to 15 days. It is easily removed in approx 20 minutes, using finger foil parcels and remover. Gellux causes no more harm to the natural nail than a traditional nail polish and can even help to protect the natural nail from bumps and breaks. It can be applied over any nail extension system.

Mayor’s Charity WWI Tea Party and Concert

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!

A WWI charity event organised by WAVES Family Support, Seahaven Storehouse and the Mayor of Seaford was held in support of the two charities on 8th November 2014. The event began in the afternoon with a Tea Party which provided authentic food that would have been available after WW1 ended. Things such as fish paste, jam sandwiches, Mother’s homemade bread pudding and lemon curd tarts were served with cups of tea followed by jelly and custard. Approximately 40 residents attended the party. In the evening there was a WWI themed concert that was attended by over 100 people, with performances of music and songs from the 1914 -1918 period by Seaford Silver Band, the Archway Choir and Seaford Baptist Church Choir. Members of the audiences had an enjoyable time singing along.

Over £700 was raised for the charities overall. Mayor of Seaford, Mark Brown said, “I would like to give my sincere thanks to the minister of Seaford Baptist Church, Vicky Martin, and to Cathy and Ray Finch for helping us to stage this event, and to the Seaford Silver Band, Archway Choir and the Baptist Church Choir for providing their services free of charge.”

Seaford area gets a new travel agency – with a twist! A new kind of travel agent has opened for business in our local area, one where the emphasis is on personal service and that is open seven days a week - including evenings and weekends. Local woman, Kate Balls has joined award winning company Travel Counsellors which has over 1,350 travel advisors across the globe and is one of the top scoring companies in the world when it comes to customer service, having achieved a world beating score of over 90% in its customer satisfaction survey. Most recently they have just celebrated a landmark 20th anniversary – which highlights the incredible success and growth of the company. Travel Counsellors is a travel agency – with a twist. All of its advisors are equipped with leading edge technology, which allows them to work from home, operating their own independent business. As part of one of the fastest growing travel companies in the UK, Kate can use the company’s award winning technology to search through literally hundreds of suppliers in a matter of minutes to find the best options for the customer. She is also able to tailor made trips to meet each individual’s travel needs. And because she works from home, Kate is more than happy to speak to customers at a time that suits them, even if it is outside normal working hours. Says Kate, “After nearly 3 years of travelling the world followed by 7 years’ experience in the travel industry, I decided I wanted to operate my own travel business. Therefore I am delighted to have joined Travel Counsellors and have the opportunity to bring a new kind of service to my local area. The technology I have at my fingertips is incredible and means I can search through hundreds of holiday options for my customers at highly competitive prices. Whether it’s a cosy cottage in the Cotswolds, a far flung tropical destination or a cruise around the Med – I can say with confidence I will create that perfect trip for you. Many people don’t have

108

time to talk or even think about their holiday during the working week, so being able to discuss their plans at a time that suits them is really popular. My customers really appreciate the personal service and attention to detail that I can offer as a Travel Counsellor – service that simply cannot be matched on a faceless website or through a call centre miles away.” Kate is also accredited by the Australia Tourism Board as an “Aussie Specialist”– so along with experience of living and working down under, her knowledge of Australia is exceptional. For more information or to discuss your forthcoming business or leisure travel plans, contact Kate Balls on 01273 256750, or email her at kate.balls@ travelcounsellors.com. Alternatively you can visit her webpage and send an enquiry at www. travelcounsellors.co.uk/kate.balls * Travel Counsellors has achieved over 90% customer satisfaction since it introduced the NPS system in 2007, far outpacing Net Promoter Scores reported for other businesses, including travel agencies. The survey was taken from Fred Reichheld’s bestselling book “The Ultimate Question”. Travel Counsellors’ customers were asked the question “How likely is it that you would recommend your Travel Counsellor to your friends and colleagues?” with the answer scaled from 0 to 10. This single question survey method, now part of Travel Counsellors’ culture, has also been embraced by other companies such Apple, Harley Davidson, Nike, Nokia, Shell, Dell and United Airlines.

Trying not to mention the weather again, but really, it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing as The Galley, Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club’s new in-house eaterie, is warm and cosy and open to the public for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea... They really have pushed the boat out today with a very hearty Galley-made Chicken Soup, packed with pulses and flavour. My friend chose the house paté of the day – creamy mushroom and chestnut – served with toast and a generous garnish of salad and roasted peppers. This could be shared, but easily not as it is so tasty! For true sharing, there are two Deli Boards to choose from, both served with warm bread and the house chutney, but more of that in the next issue! That was for starters, then Chef, Steve hoisted the main sail and presented us with the house flan (a new one prepared daily) – Chestnut mushroom and Stilton in a soft shortcrust pastry and the daily special pie, Sweet Potato and Bulgar wheat with spinach, wrapped in a water-crust pastry – both delicious and served with a generous mixed salad, dressed with sesame oil and a fluffy, oven-cooked jacket potato (no micro-waved potatoes served here!). No room left for a dessert, however the homemade cakes looked exceedingly tasty! Another time...
