Seaford in Bloom A Golf Day for Seaford in Bloom” took place at Blatchington Golf Course on Wednesday May 15th and attracted fantastic support. Although the teams were not helped by the strong and gusty wind, at least the rain held off and it proved to be an enormous success. The clubhouse was buzzing throughout the day.
The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day 2013 The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day 2013 sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents - will be held on Sunday 14th July between 1pm and 6pm. This is the sixth year running that Rowland Gorringe will be very kindly sponsoring this event This year there are three new venues and it’s a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the variety of plants and shrubs that thrive in a very windy seaside location growing in a varied selection of gardens which are very different in their size, style and content. Throughout the afternoon, cream teas will be available at two of the eight gardens. Ashley Stephenson LVO will be on hand at two of the gardens at the listed times to offer his expert gardening advice.
The incredible sum of £2700 was raised towards the floral displays in Seaford, including the proceeds from a well-supported raffle. Seaford in Bloom would like to thank the organisers of the event, Arthur Bradbury and John Lockyer, together with their helpers, the twenty-five teams of four that took part and the catering staff who provided such an excellent meal. Sincere thanks also go to everyone who donated prizes and to the event sponsors, The White Lion Hotel, Barwells Solicitors, Tomsetts Distribution Ltd, Swindells LLP, David Jordan Estate Agents and JXP Consultancy.
Although there are several other Open Garden events taking place in and around Seaford during 2013, we hope that our event will once again be well supported, as it has been for the last 16 years. All the money raised from this event goes towards funding the floral displays in Seaford Town.
The winning team was ‘Jolly Boys’ (above), who received their prizes from SIB Chairman Isabel Stephenson followed by runners up ‘Playmates’. Photo: l to r: Steve Bullman, Robin Marlow, Jim Taylor, Isabel Stephenson, Henry Thomas.

What is it with the British and their fixation with the weather?? I wrote the June article in May and the sun was shining - silly me thinking summer was to begin! As I now write this article on a wet gloomy day, the Kutlers are looking forward to the Portsmouth visit and seeing the newly finished and opened Mary Rose exhibition. Trust me – it will be a beautiful day. We go on the 6th June. Since my last article we refereed for the Seahaven Lionesses’ annual sports tournament on Saturday 18th May which took place at the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford. The evening was really good, very well organised and a lot of fun. The winners were Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions club. The Lionesses were very generous and donated the money from the raffle to Seaford Kurlers and I thank them very much. I would also personally like to thank the Wave Leisure staff at The Downs for all their hard work in helping us to set the hall up at 7pm and then again they helped to clear it all away when the evening ended about 10pm. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they are such a cheerful lot. A number of visitors to the event were not familiar with New Age Kurling so were keen to know about the game. If you are curious, why not come along to the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford and see what we do? We’re there every Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm with a break about half way. We also have an active social side the club. You will meet new people and also learn a sport that is able to be enjoyed by people of varying levels of mobility. We are also a branch of ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). Seaford Kurlers, contact is Mrs June Wood, 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford, BN25 3JS or email sally1989@tiscali.co.uk.

Running Commentary... For many, July signifies the beginning of the holiday period and a chance to switch off from the pressures of work. One or two weeks spent in a different part of the country or abroad to recharge your batteries also offers the opportunity to explore new running routes or to add new events to your list of races. OK, the chance of getting lost is greater but the thrill of running off into the unknown is worth the risk. Alternatively, a spot of Google research could well locate nearby running clubs who would probably not mind if you joined them for one of their evening runs. Failing that, just running barefoot along the sandy beach that you have gravitated to can really lift the spirits and relax the body, so don’t forget to pack your running gear. Even if you don’t have a holiday this year, the mindset of the runner in the summertime seems to instinctively become more adventurous. Catching a bus to Eastbourne or a train to Lewes and then running home is an easy way of extending your area of running… but if that isn’t challenging enough, how about a running holiday? It is possible to cover 25 – 30 miles a day just by dividing up the daily distance into three or four sections of seven to ten miles (with food breaks in between) all done at a leisurely pace and underpinned by an ‘I’m on holiday’ mindset. However, if a week of running is not viable or too big a step, consider instead a running weekend. Fill a lightweight rucksack with running kit for two days, a road map and some normal clothes, pre-book B&B accommodation at, for instance, Lewes and Battle then after work on the Friday, run the first leg of your holiday to Lewes. On the Saturday morning pick out the quiet country lanes and off-road tracks that take you towards Ringmer and on to East Hoathly for a mid-morning refreshment stop. Then set your sights for Heathfield and a long break for lunch, before heading on to Battle in the afternoon. On the Sunday, head southwards to Bexhill (and a morning break) then follow the beach road to Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne and stop for lunch. The final leg of your epic run will be to climb up onto the Downs and to return to Seaford via Friston Forest or perhaps the Seven Sisters route. The overall distance covered will be about 70 miles but unusually, you will not have the expected tiredness after such a challenge because it will not have been a race… but an adventure. Raising the next town… and the next, under your own steam heightens the enjoyment
factor even if sloppy map reading adds extra miles to the journey. Running all day is something that the human body is designed to do, and to do it through the amazingly picturesque Sussex countryside and alongside refreshing seaviews, stopping for morning coffee and later a pub lunch (with beer), then afternoon cream tea, and maybe even a swim in the sea, takes a lot of beating. Your sense of achievement and feel-good factor will be sky high while your stress and anxiety levels will be on zero. By the way, the food stops are not driven by greed but the need to maintain your energy levels. No runner wants to run out of petrol miles from home! In previous years I have done six such challenges, ranging from 80 to 200 miles, and can vouch for the beneficial effects of running holidays, but don’t take my word for it. Give it a try. YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HOMEOPATHY ANSWERED BY SIMONE OATES RSHom What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a system of medicine which triggers the body’s natural instinct for self repair. It is gentle, non-toxic and free of side effects and therefore suitable for everyone from newborns to the elderly. It is used to treat a wide range of illnesses. The beauty of homeopathy is that we look at the person and the individual symptoms, so that having a diagnosis is helpful but not essential. If you compare your cold, your flu, your headache or your depression to someone else’s it will probably have similarities and differences. As we are all individuals, homeopaths look at all the similarities and differences and at you as a person, therefore the remedy could be different for each person. Homeopathy differs from herbalism, as in homeopathy the materials are used in ultra-high dilutions and therefore non-toxic.
What are the remedies? Every substance on earth which is capable of inducing diseases symptoms in a healthy person is potentially a homeopathic medicine. Homeopathic remedies are sourced from all the kingdoms of nature. The greatest proportion (60%) are from botanical sources. We have over 2,000 remedies so there will be a remedy that is exactly right for you. If the remedy is a perfect fit. i.e. when given in it’s natural form to a healthy person, it will give the symptoms that the patient is suffering from. Homeopathy is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic health system in the world.
Who can benefit from homeopathy? People often turn to homeopathy due to worries about side-effects of conventional medicine or if their medicine does not provide relief from symptoms. Some may have been ill for years, perhaps with a chronic condition, managed with decreasing success. Some seem to pick up every bug that is going round. Some maybe never feel 100%, though nothing specific has been diagnosed. Often homeopathy is the last resort for people who have been told that there is nothing medicine can do to help.
12
Can I use homeopathy alongside my prescribed medicines? Homeopathy can be used alongside prescribed medication. The decision to reduce prescribed medication is ultimately that of the medical specialist. Homeopathy will not interfere with the action of prescribed medication, although there are some very strong medications which would make homeopathy ineffective.
What happens during a consultation? The first appointment will last 1½ hours. You will talk informally but in detail about your symptoms, how you experience them, your medical history, your family’s medical history, your likes, dislikes, temperament, lifestyle and how you react to different environments, as these contribute to the unique picture of who you are. I also discuss any treatment you have received and whether you require further treatment and tests from a doctor. I would also like to know what medications you are taking. This information needs to be taken to assess how your environment, your past, your present and your health affects you. This time is focussed entirely on you and what is troubling you.
How many appointments will I need? A follow-up appointment will be between 4-6 weeks later. I shall look at changes and improvements and if necessary prescribe another remedy. Follow-up appointments last 30 minutes.
How do I book an appointment? Call me on 01323 894479 or 07936192353 or email simone_oates@o2.co.uk. If you would like to discuss homeopathy before going ahead with treatment I offer a 15-minute free pre-consultation discussion. I offer clinic appointments at 12 Place Lane Seaford BN25 1LA. I also offer some domiciliary visits. For more information on homeopathy please go to www.homeopathyactiontrust.org/about-homeopathy or visit my website: www.homeopathyisamazing.com.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH DEPRESSION Contrary to common belief, depression is not primarily a biological illness, inherited through the genes. Nor is it the setbacks, crises or tragedies in our lives that cause depression. It is our response to adverse events that determines whether we get depressed or not. Research shows that people most likely to suffer depression are those who react to adversity by taking it personally, seeing all areas of their lives as blighted by it, and the misery as going on forever. Depression is always a second and unnecessary problem, and just makes problematic circumstances worse. This is good to know because it means that, instead of feeling helpless or hopeless, people can learn to take back control over their lives. They may not be able to change certain circumstances but they always have options about how they react to them. The symptoms of depression include low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of appetite and energy, sleep disturbance, feeling agitated or lethargic, worthless or guilty, difficulty in thinking straight and having repeated thoughts about suicide. Antidepressant drugs may help some people because they lift levels of a ‘feel-good’ chemical in the brain; unfortunately, they do nothing to change the underlying circumstances or thinking patterns that led to the depression. Depression is always related to unmet essential emotional needs and that is why the human givens approach, which focuses on helping people in distress find healthy ways to meet their emotional needs, is so successful. Depressed people may seem deflated and flat but, in actual fact, they have raised levels of a stress hormone called cortisol, which means that they are in a state of constant high emotional arousal. When our emotions are aroused we can’t think rationally, so this is why people deep in the grip of depression can’t concentrate well or even make simple decisions. Learning simple relaxation techniques to calm themselves down will start reducing those cortisol levels.
The main reason that depressed people are so emotionally aroused is that they spend a vast amount of time worrying about the future or beating themselves up about past events. Perhaps they still feel guilty about something that happened recently – or years ago; perhaps they are frightening themselves with dire ‘what if?’ scenarios (likely or unlikely), in which loved ones encounter dangers or they themselves lose their jobs or their homes; perhaps they feel beaten down by chronic pain or anger (“Why did this have to happen to me?” “How could he have been so cruel?”); or maybe they experience a combination. They also have a huge tendency towards negative thinking – “I’ll never be good enough”; “I’ll never cope”; “nothing ever goes right”; “the pain will only get worse”. All this kind of negative imagining and thinking saps an enormous amount of energy – and makes people utterly miserable. Far from feeling more refreshed after a night’s sleep, most people with depression wake up next day still exhausted and feeling totally unmotivated. It is hard for them to get out of bed and do anything at all. Next month I will explain how and why this happens. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

No job too small!!
SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB The Club welcomed plantswoman Rosa Hardy of Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants to the April meeting. Her knowledge was astounding and we were not surprised to learn that her nursery won its 25th Gold Medal at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. In May we were treated to a beautiful ‘Walk in the Park’ by new demonstrator Pat Macdonald. We went from the exotic to the sublime by way of the ‘boi-ing’ garden which I suggested could be called Zebedee’s Garden!! Her last arrangement was in a substantial urn known as Eric (as it is not a little Ern!!!). In June, experienced demonstrator Angela Merryfield showed us a vibrantly colourful ‘Curtain Up’. On July 18th at 2 for 2.30pm we are fortunate to have Kay Blackburn, the celebrated Art Historian, giving a short talk with slides on ‘Flowers in Art’. We are combining Kay’s talk with our main fundraising afternoon for this year’s charity, the Air Ambulance and there will be several stalls including cakes, plants, tombola and raffle and a cream tea!! This is a ticketed event costing £5. Telephone Tina on 873162 to reserve your places.

THE MERCREAD YOUTH CENTRE This is the time of the year whenwe look forward to the end of term and summer holiday season, whilst also planning for next academic year. Mercread Youth Centre is working with Seaford Head School to offer a Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Activity Week. The week, starting 5th August, will be held at the Centre, and includes lots of activities for current Year 6s to have fun and make new friends before starting at secondary school. To secure a place please see information at the local primary schools or contact Mercread Youth Centre. We have also joined with a number of other groups in Seaford offering summer activities for young people to offer informal football sessions on Tuesdays with Wave Leisure at the Downs. Looking forward to the future the committee would like to expand and welcome new members into the ‘Friends of Mercread’. These are individuals from the local community who offer occasional help towards the Centres’ facilities or activities. It would be good to hear from anyone with any skills, ability, ideas or experience who would like to become involved as a ‘Friend’.
In the near future we will be very concerned with fundraising activities in order to continue and develop the youth work at Mercread. Particularly we are seeking to create a group of ‘Friends’ who have experience of planning and running local events as well as applying for major funding. This work will be actively supported by members of the Committee, and aims to ensure we are able to continue to provide fun, informal, educativative provision for the young people in and around Seaford. We will be holding a ‘Friends’ open forum from 7pm to 8pm on September 3rd at Mercread Youth Centre for anyone interested to find out more, and talk to members of the committee. Interested people can always contact Roger Daw via the Centre on 01323 892531. Coralie Tiffin, Mercread Management Committee and Sam Whittaker, Centre Co-ordinator

ON SEAFORD’S SEASHORE By Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski If you look out to sea from Seaford, it’s water all the way to the horizon. Not far away is France, but down the Channel is America on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Flowing towards us is the Gulf Stream which sometimes brings drifting seeds or sea beans from as far away as Costa Rica. The Sea Heart is the bean of a climbing vine in the tropical Caribbean forest- called the Monkey Ladder because that’s what it is! This is one of the exotic seeds you may pick up on Seaford’s seashore, especially after westerly gales. Has anyone tried to grow one? Not all seeds on the tide line, however, are great travellers. Our local speciality is Ivory Nuts - the source of vegetable ivory from Ecuador. They are from the cargo of the Peruvian, a sailing ship wrecked opposite the Causeway in 1899, and the nuts were painted with miniatures by enterprising local artists. There’s lots of wildlife interest on the beach such as mermaid’s purses and sea shells. There are also fossils from the age of the dinosaurs preserved in seemingly indestructible flint like the beach pebbles. If you look closer, however, there are exotic pebbles too like granite, not normally found in this part of the world. You can also come across a bewildering array of things lost or thrown away by people now and over the years. They include flotsam and jetsam from wrecks, relics of the world wars, and even prehistoric artefacts as well as messages in bottles. This year celebrates the centenary of the British Ecological Society and (weather permitting) will be marked by a free beach walk from the museum at 2.30 pm on Saturday 6th July (see advert opposite). There’ll be a finds stall- so please bring any interesting or mysterious objects you have found! In the meantime, see the free exhibition in the museum (there is a modest museum entrance fee).

GIFTS FROM THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE For the third time in as many weeks, the Seahaven branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ has made gifts locally. Firstly, 300 special badges were presented to Julia Dunk from the South Heighten Village to help with their Coronation Street Party on 2nd June, which celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation. Next, the branch joined with Seaford Rotary Club to present a new water heater to the St James’s Trust’s Drop-In Centre in the Old Town Hall in Seaford. The latest gift was the presentation of six Agogo Bells to the band and choir of Seaford Primary School. This arose from a visit the President of the Branch, Don Mabey MBE, and the Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, made to a Seaford Silver Band Concert earlier in the year where the school’s choir and band gave a recital which received a standing ovation. Bob Peedle said “This made a great impression on us, and as the Branch is always looking to help local efforts, we asked the School to nominate a gift. They needed Agogo Bells, so it has been a privilege to give them and to visit a school assembly to present them.” Photo: Six of the Seaford Primary School band holding their new Agogo Bells with Bob Peedle MBE, Branch Chairman.

ROTARY CLUB OF SEAFORD Rotary Club and Seaford Community Garden The generous support of the Rotary Club in 2012 has enabled Seaford Community Garden to improve the wheelchair access to the gardens by paving all the pathways. This has proved to be enormously valuable not just for wheelchair users but also for many older visitors and parents with buggies. At present there is a single raised bed which is wheelchair accessible and there are now plans to build a new bed with a wide U-shaped access point which will allow more individuals to garden at any one time. There is also a proposal to build a removable tabletopworkbench so that gardeners with disabilities can have their tools/plants in front of them while working. The Seaford Community gardeners believe that gardening is a hugely therapeutic activity, and the positive experience reported by volunteers appears to confirm this fact. (Photo L-R: President Paul and Katie Hoff)
Combined Operation The Rotary Club of Seaford and Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ combined forces to bring a new water heater to the St James’ Trust’s drop-in centre at the Old Town Hall in Seaford, on Monday 20th May. Their presidents, Paul Vaesen and Don Mabey MBE, met the Trust’s Chairman Bryan Turner at the Centre to make the presentation. Rotary President Paul told the group how important Seaford charities are for Rotary and that it was a privilege to help out. The Trust’s Chairman, Bryan Turner, thanked the two organisations for the gift and explained how valuable this latest gift will be. The Royal Society’s Branch Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, said, “This was a first-class example of cooperation between two local volunteer groups to help another group. Having been an honorary member of the Rotary

Club of Seaford I knew that they help out in cases like this. St James’ Trust is a most worthwhile local charity that deserves all the support it can get.” (Photo L-R Bryan Turner, Don Maby MBE, Paul Vaesen, Laurie Holland)
Club Members get involved with the law! Prior to lunch recently, 21 members and one guest attended a presentation entitled Surrey and Sussex Local Crime Community Sentence. During the hourlong session led by a Magistrate and a Probation Officer, the group was taken through an interactive DVD presentation of a fictional crime. The presenters provided all the background information of the offence, how it was reported in the media, and the offender’s personal circumstances. At each stage the group was asked its opinion, based on the evidence provided, to determine the appropriate community sentence from twelve possibilities. The session gave all those attending a very good insight into the respective roles of magistrates and the probation service, the interface between the two, and the processes they need to follow to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done. Our two presenters, Susan de Angeli and Brenda Broom, were warmly thanked by Vocational and Youth Opportunities Chairman Jim Anderson for what had been a challenging and informative session.
Devonshire Park Theatre Eastbourne Tour Did you know that the Devonshire Park Theatre was built in 1884 and is a Grade II listed building that was designed by Henry Currey and improved by the celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham in 1903? Did you know that it was originally lit only by flame and the twin towers visible from the outside were designed to hold water, just in case? You didn’t? Well nor did most of a party of 22 members and spouses who recently enjoyed conducted tours of the theatre! While some areas are clearly in need of investment this could not detract from the grandeur of this fine Victorian theatre. As well as all the information given by the excellent tour guide, the groups enjoyed an additional talk by the Stage Manager. Thanking all those who had contributed to such an interesting hour, Vocational and Youth Opportunities Chairman Jim Anderson handed over the proceeds of a collection from those who had attended the tours to the Friends of the Devonshire Park Theatre, to help the invaluable work which that organisation does to support the theatre.

THE CEMETERY CLUB Seaford Little Theatre Friday 10th - Saturday 18th May
The Cemetery Club, a story seemingly about death, is in fact about relishing life, and the loves and the friendships along the way. The talented cast and crew of Seaford Little Theatre presented this warm and witty play with exactly the right degree of verve, wit and pathos to touch the audience’s hearts. Cathryn Parker’s deft direction allowed the wonderful writing and characterisation in Ivan Menchell’s play shine through. Just as in life, we never know the full story at the beginning and should appreciate that first impressions can be deceptive. In Menchell’s carefully crafted play full of Jewish New Yorker gossipy quips and feisty bickering, each scene deepens the story of the three main characters. We first meet the three ‘merry’ Jewish widows, Ida, Lucille and Doris, at Ida’s New York home preparing for one of their monthly visits to their respective late husband’s graves at the local cemetery. Ida, played with charm and grace by Sylvia Aston, is the lynchpin of the group. Ida misses her cigar-smoking Murray and reminisces about his dark wavy hair, and the fun that the three couples used to have on holidays. But she knows deep down that it’s time to embrace life and love again. It would be easy to make assumptions about Lucille, as she breezes into Ida’s well-kept home with a swish of her newly acquired mink coat from the thrift shop. At first Lucille, played with wit and ‘chutzpah’ by Trish Richings, seems a vain, man-hungry dolly-bird. But appearances can be deceiving and as the scenes go by we understand more about how much she is grieving for her philandering, real-estate agent husband Harry. Or is it that she is grieving for the marriage she should have had with him – a contented one like her two friends had had? We learn that the man-eater act is all show and that even now she couldn’t be unfaithful to Harry. Doris sees that she has a duty to act in a proper manner as a widow and genuinely mourns the loss of her beloved Abe. Mary Young’s well-judged portrayal of Doris allowed
36
us to warm to this woman who at first seems to be a judgemental, stick-in-the-mud. But her disapproval of Lucille’s flighty behaviour and Ida’s need to move on with her life is more understandable as we gradually learn how she lost her true soulmate, and how she would dearly love to still walk with him in the autumn sunshine. As Ida’s prospective love interest and the spark that sets off the friends bickering, the role of Sam, the Butcher, is strong with Alan Lade’s assured performance as the well-presented, eligible widower. Sam had loved his wife, but like Ida, is ready to take a chance on love again. The would-be interloper into Sam and Ida’s burgeoning relationship is a minx named Mildred, played with spirit by Sue Shephard. The three women have a sparky, bickering but strong friendship but it is sorely tested, and nearly doesn’t survive Act II and yet another one of ‘Selma’s weddings’. As the three elderly bridesmaids prepare to get ready, they remember dancing with their late husbands at Selma’s previous three nuptials. In the drunken aftermath of the wedding party, Ida realises that her friends have decided to intervene in her relationship with Sam and this almost causes an unbreachable rift. The rift is only breached by Doris’s death, her broken heart finally giving out in her sleep to let her go and to be with Abe. The three women were friends in life, and now in death, and the play’s bitter-sweet ending has Ida and Sam facing life together, and the poignant image of Lucille dutifully maintaining her friend’s and her husband’s graves. Yet again, the theatre’s backstage crew ingeniously created a set that transported us seamlessly from one hub of the action, ‘Ida’s home’, to the cemetery on the same stage. By the end of the evening we had all learnt a lot about life and death, and love and forgiveness from another wonderful show by the Seaford Little Theatre. Gerrie Purcell

MARTELLO ROTARY AWARDS THREE PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIPS
S. J. HAMPTON
Seaford Martello Rotary Club recently held their annual President’s Dinner at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston, and the club were celebrating the tenth anniversary of receiving their Charter in 2003. The highlight of the evening was a presentation ceremony by the current President, Julian Turner, who awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship to three people who have served their organisations with distinction and whose efforts the club wished to recognise. Paul Harris was a Chicago Illinois attorney who founded Rotary International with three business associates in 1905. The first award was to Kay Turvey, who is the chair of Seaford Museum and Heritage Society, situated in the Martello Tower on the seafront, and is the town’s only visitor attraction. Kay has been involved almost since its inception in the 1970s and has been the driving force behind the regular updating of the archives and exhibits. She has provided leadership and guidance to ensure that the improvements, which will always be ongoing, reach a conclusion which is beneficial to the visitor, the Museum staff and Seaford itself. The second award was to Michele Spencer, the founder and chairperson of Community Training Assistance And Support (CTAS). This charity has been running projects in Nepal and the club have helped them with grants to get clean drinking water to remote communities, also with education projects, where a relatively small amount of money can go a very long way. The third award was to a Past President of the club, Reg Dove. This recognised his commitment to Rotary and also his other voluntary work in the community, where he gives his time and effort for the benefit of others and truly lives up to the Rotary motto of ‘Service Before Self ’.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OUT AND ABOUT Here we are in July - hopefully enjoying a better summer than we did a spring – and the Natural History Society’s walks programme is well underway. We started on the 2nd April when the wild flowers were a bit thin on the ground – but the sunny day brought 25 of us out and everyone seemed to enjoy our walk above Blatchington. Later walks have taken us to Herstmonceux looking for bluebells, Birling Gap for migrant birds and Abbot’s Wood to look at the trees - and on 18th June we went pond dipping in Friston Forest.

t: 01323 735549 m: 07905 166270 e: katie@thesilletts.co.uk w: www.curtainsbykatie.com Our forthcoming programme is just as varied – on 2nd July we are going to Rowlands Wood to look for butterflies and on the 23rd July we have our annual walk around Seaford Head and Cuckmere Haven looking at wild flowers - see the listing at the end of Seaford Scene for further details. Information about the rest of our walks this year can be found on our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or by phoning 01323 491964. We will be publishing our winter programme of talks in September. Seaford Natural History Society is a friendly informal group of people keen to learn about the plants, birds and insects of our local countryside. We welcome visitors and prospective new members on our walks which usually last about two and a half hours. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation. EAST BLATCHINGTON LECTURES Whatever one’s views were on the benefits of the Channel Tunnel, every seat was taken for the lecture given by Alan Walters on May 7th. Alan was very much involved in the planning and installation of the tunnel from start to finish, and with the aid of some brilliant screen illustrations, gave us a truly comprehensive view of the progress made from its first inception to the success it now enjoys. The whole audience seemed wrapped up in the subject, and all agreed it was a most enlightening and successful afternoon. Details of Rev. Dr Andrew’s lecture on Icons in June are not yet available, so will be held over for the next issue. We now look forward to an unprecedented visit by Sussex-based, top award-winning crime writer Peter James on July 2nd. Peter will no doubt have some interesting tales to tell, and there will be a supply of his latest books for sale during refreshments, which he has kindly agreed to sign. On August 6th, Shirley Linsell, who has organised these lectures over the past four years, will address the meeting herself. Shirley has been a member of the
Richard III Society for over 50 years, and in the light of the recent discovery of the bones of this much-maligned monarch beneath a Leicester car park, she has agreed to tell us something of his life and times, and of the hard work and research done by the Society in an effort to clear his name, culminating in this latest remarkable event. It is a fascinating story, and a most interesting and entertaining afternoon can be guaranteed. Try not to miss it. Tickets for all lectures are available at £5 from Newberry Tully Estate Agents in Church Street, Seaford. It cannot be guaranteed that tickets will be available at the door on the day of Peter James’ lecture. Tea and cakes are included in the price; numbers have to be limited for safety, so it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment. It is encouraging to witness the success of these afternoons and we forward to your continued support. Shirley Linsell

PROPERTY LADDER CHANNEL 4
SEAHAVEN LIONESS CLUB On Tuesday 14th May the Lionesses had their regular monthly meeting at the Old Plough in Seaford, but on this occasion they had two special visitors, Nigel King and Will Morris from Newhaven Community Responders. Community Responders are all volunteers who work closely with the Ambulance Service, answering calls to emergency situations. Because they work from their homes within the community they can often be at the scene quicker than the ambulance and they carry the life-saving equipment necessary to keep the patient alive, where at all possible, until the ambulance arrives. Seaford has had Responders for a few years now and the Lionesses donated to them when they first started, but the service in Newhaven has only just been set up. Although the Responders themselves are all volunteers the equipment they need is expensive. As they work individually each Responder needs a set of equipment, which includes a defibrillator and a backpack full of essential items. After an interesting and informative talk by Nigel and Will about the work the Responders do in the community of Newhaven the Lionesses presented them with a cheque for £300. The Lionesses are fortunate to have talent in their midst. One of the members, Louise, who runs a variety of exercise classes in Seaford and Newhaven (www. louisecavefitness.co.uk), kindly offered to run a charity tea dance. This took place on Thursday 16th May at Mercread Youth Club in Seaford. Nearly 40 ladies (and one brave man) took part, including several Lionesses, while the rest were busy in the kitchen making tea and cutting up the home-made cakes which were served after the class. Some of the participants were clearly regulars at Louise’s classes and knew what they were
doing. For others it was more of a challenge! However, good fun was had by all and everyone felt they had earned their tea and cake. While tea was being taken the new mayor of Seaford, Councillor Anthony White, called in and helped with the raffle draw. The afternoon raised a terrific £380, which has been split between the Lionesses’ charity fund and Lewes District Citizens Advice Bureau, which includes the Seaford office. It has become a tradition over the last few years for the Seaford Saturday stall on the last Saturday in May to be a grand plant sale. Some of the members are keen gardeners, while others do what they can, raising seeds, growing on plug plants and taking cuttings from indoor and outdoor plants. Despite the unseasonal weather a good display of plants were produced and well over £100 made on the morning, with more being sold the following Saturday. Thanks to the people of Seaford for their continuing support. Thinking of any planning work? A renovation, extension, loft conversion or new build? Do you need plans prepared? SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE
Seahaven Storehouse has been set up to give food to people who find themselves in a crisis situation. Some people have found that with rising costs and a low income they just can’t make ends meet any more and even if they are entitled to help, there is often a time gap between claiming and receiving the money. Others have been affected by changes to the benefits system leaving them with less money to live on and no crisis loans available to help them out. Others have lost their job. These are just some of the reasons that people in our community have needed help since the Storehouse opened earlier this year in February. The support from people in the town has been really encouraging with over one and a half tonnes of food donated and about a tonne given away so far to those in need. Donations of food can be given by placing in the box in Morrisons, which is positioned to the right of the desk by the window as you exit from the tills. We are working with others in the town and have received food and cash donations from several different places. We are very grateful for all the help and support we have received and value the involvement of all in our community from schools and churches to each individual who has given. Another person decided that they did not need the extra £10 Payday bonus for food for themselves so used it to buy food items for the Storehouse. These are just a few of the stories. Everyone’s circumstances are different and we may not all help in the same way, but every bit of help and support is valued and makes a difference. Seahaven Storehouse is open at 115-117 Vale Road on Thursday mornings from 10 until 1. You would be most welcome to come and find out a bit more over a cup of tea. We are also going to be in Morrisons on July 12th and 13th to talk to shoppers about what the Storehouse is doing and answer your questions. We look forward to meeting you there! SEA SUNDAY
14th July 2013, 10.15am Saint Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone Village ‘Sea Sunday’ is a celebration and thanksgiving day organised by the Mission to Seafarers on a worldwide basis on the second Sunday in July each year. Visit www.seasunday.org. The purpose of this celebration is to provide a few moments for us as an island nation to reflect upon our particular dependence on the sea, and for the bountiful fruits that it supplies as a safe thoroughfare and a source of a unique harvest for us on a daily basis. It is a moment during the course of the year when we also give thanks for all those who sacrifice a traditional home life for servicing our needs upon the sea, and the other dangerous services that are conducted thereon. These include our military guardians - the personnel and ships of the Royal Navy, our providers - the personnel and ships of the Merchant Navies from all over the world, the personnel and ships of the fishing fleets, the support and rescue services and all the

ancillary maritime and emergency services. We also recognise the work of the Missions to Seafarers and its Padres and staff who support and adminster to the needs of all seafarers when far from home and when sometimes in distress. Our parish of Saint Andrew’s, Bishopstone, actually borders the sea at Seaford beach, and indeed the sea was previously even closer to the chruch in days gone by, before the arrial of the sea defences and the railway embankment one mile distant to our South. Therefore, being the seaside parish that we are, it is right and highly appropriate that we should celebrate this particular day each year, always and also considering the sailing and other leisure activities enjoyed along our parish boundary at the nearby Seaford beach. We also reflect on the commercial activities at the port of Newhaven close by, encompassing deep-sea fishing, aggregate imports, scrap metal exports and a twice-daily ferry service to and from Dieppe. HMS Sutherland is one of our Royal Navy Duke Class, Type 23, anti-submarine frigates which is affiliated to the City of London Livery Company, The Honourable Company of Master Mariners. We shall be welcoming a small but representative detachment from the ship’s company to our service this year, maybe including some participation by the members during the service. Our speaker is Captain John Hughes, Vice Chairman of the Management Board of the Mission to Seafarers, who will enlighten us on the work and the needs of this organisation. Captain Hughes is also Master of the Honorable Company of Master Mariners. Our Sea Sunday service is largely based on the order of service for the Annual National Service for Seafarers, held in St Paul’s Cathedral each year in October. It is believed that our own last year’s order of service was meaningful and appropriate, and it will remain in much the same format this year, with only one or two minor adjustments. As part of the church’s Charitable Giving, St Andrew’s Church donates £200 to the Mission to Seafarers around Sea Sunday time.

Due to continued Environment Agency disinterest in seeking a new approach to the maintenance of our beach, Norman Baker MP has now been asked to take up this pressing issue directly within Government. Sadly, to date no satisfactory response has been received, despite a very clear danger to swimmers when using the beach as it presently exists. Due to the instability of the lower part of the beach and particularly at or around high tide an unpredictable water surge can develop which has been known to cause people to be pulled from the water. We are no further in seeing at least a small section of beach provided, which will give everybody a good chance of enjoying the sea in safety. Although any alternative strategy to the existing “shingle re-alignment” strategy of the last 26 years is going to take time to produce and implement it is essential the momentum for change is maintained - the petition (to date signed by over 2500 local people and visitors) undoubtedly carries weight and makes it clear that the desire for a new and less hazardous beach, accessible for all and not just the fittest, is an aim shared by many local people and visitors alike. The petition can be found in the Old Plough Inn, Church St, Seaford. Please do sign the petition if you would like to see Seaford (as in the past) boast a beach that we can all be proud of. Thank you. Jim Skinner. Email: brian.skinner2@btinternet.com

The Synergy Theatre is returning to The Crouch Gardens with its annual open-air Shakespeare production. This summer, we are delighted to be bringing you the timeless love story of Romeo and Juliet. One of Shakespeare’s best-loved tragedies, Romeo and Juliet needs very little introduction. We meet up with two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, who have been embroiled in an ongoing feud for generations. In the midst of the fighting and the sniping, the teenage Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and – before either of them realise exactly what is happening – they fall desperately, hopelessly, in love. Only we, the audience, and Shakespeare himself know that the young lovers are not destined to be together into old age. There will be no long and joyful marriage, no children, no enduring memories. Only we know that, even as we pray for the couple to overcome the hatred of their families, there will be no happy ending for them. Featuring some of East Sussex’s finest young (and young-at-heart!) actors, and home-grown Seaford luminaries led by Chris Church as ‘Romeo’, Peter Linsdell as ‘Friar Laurence’ and Stephen Newberry as ‘Lord Capulet’, Romeo and Juliet will play at The Crouch Gardens on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July, at 7pm, before moving to Lewes (Southover Grange Gardens on Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th) and the village green at Kingston – behind The Juggs – on Friday 19th & Saturday 20th July. All performances start at 7pm. Don’t forget to bring something to sit on and something to keep you warm and dry. Why not bring a picnic and come along early to enjoy an alfresco supper before the performance? Tickets, £12/£10 (concessions), are available from the Company’s box office on 01273 301444, from Newberry Tully estate agents, from Seaford Tourist Information centre, by email at: boxoffice@ thesynergytheatre.co.uk or through the website, www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk.

BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD & SURROUNDING AREA with Bob Eade July With the summer now well underway July is the month when some of our most impressive butterfly species can be seen with White Admirals and Silver Washed Fritillaries flying along the woodland rides of Friston Forest and Abbotts Wood and the fast flying Dark Green Fritillaries over the Downs as well as Friston Forest. The start of the White Admiral flight season is looked forward to by many butterfly enthusiasts. It is a mediumsized butterfly with a gliding action to its flight as it stays close to the upper leaves of the woodland rides, occasionally dropping lower to nectar on flowers such as bramble. It is very distinctive with dark upperwings with a broad white band. Itsunderside is even more attractive with shades of golden brown, white and silver. The Silver Washed Fritillary is one of the largest of the British Butterflies, being seen on the wing from the end of June with numbers building up throughout July before tailing off into August. This is a very strong flying species stopping to nectar on bramble and thistle heads. As with all fritillaries they are orange and black on their top wings; the underside of this species is a mixture of light green and silver streaks which is where the butterfly gets its name. The Dark Green Fritillary is also very impressive. A medium-sized butterfly, it is the only fritillary regularly found on open Downland with strongholds between Birling Gap and Beachy Head as well as Windover Hill. Large numbers can also be found on the outskirts of

Friston Forest, with some venturing into the rides to nectar on flowers such as knapweed, thistle and bramble. Any relatively large orange and black butterfly seen on the Downs is almost certainly this species. It is also by far the most common fritillary in this area. The dark green part of its name once again comes from its underwing, which is a mix of green and silver. The White Letter Hairstreak is a smallish butterfly that is very seldom seen and is probably much overlooked. However, due to the fact that the caterpillars of this species feed on elms it is getting rarer all the time. This is especially true at the present time as in the last 3 years Dutch Elm Disease has returned and killed many elms in the area. Some of the best colonies of this species are along the Cuckmere Valley where the adult butterflies are occasionally seen near the tree tops flying briefly before settling back on elm leaves where they feed on honeydew, which is a substance left by aphids. These butterflies always settle with their wings closed but with a pair of binoculars they can be observed. They have a brownish underwing with a thin white line that is in the shape of a W, which is where the butterfly gets its name. Occasionally a butterfly will descend from the treetops to nectar on either bramble or creeping thistle. At this time they can be very approachable and it can be easy to study them at close range, where their full beauty can be seen. This butterfly can turn up anywhere where established elm trees grow including in and around the town. Any sightings of this butterfly, please report them to Butterfly Conservation at the website below. Remember to look at www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk for more information about the butterflies of our area and how you can help them.
Remember to check out the Sussex Butterfly Conservation website for details of how you can help our wild butterflies as well as recent sightings at www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk Clockwise from left: White Letter Hairstreak, Dark Green Fritillary, White Admiral, Silver Washed Fritillary

SEAFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.seaford-sussex/sdhs
A VIEW FROM THE POTTING SHED
S
omething for everyone, that’s what you can expect to see on the second Saturday in August! The Seaford & District Horticultural Society is holding its 111th Annual Horticultural Show on Saturday 10th August 2013. This is one of the biggest horticultural shows in the county. We are pleased to announce that the venue for this year’s show is in the main hall of Seaford Community School in Arundel Road. This is a new venue for the Seaford Show and this gives us the opportunity to expand and try something different for our visitors. We hope that Mother Nature is kind to us this year enabling our members to maintain their high quality of exhibits in all classes. The show is open to the public from 1.30 to 4pm and entrance is £1 O
WHAT
TO D
WHAT TO DO IN JULY
3 Use water wisely. In the heat of the summer
water young plants and pot plants regularly. Best to check every day and please don’t forget the birds. They need water just as much as the plants. 3 Lift new potatoes, onions and garlic when ready. Pinch out runner beans when they reach the top of the canes. 3 Pinch out tomatoes after 4 or 5 trusses or when they reach the top of the greenhouse. Keep your greenhouse well ventilated and watch out for pests. 3 If you’re going away on holiday make plans for someone to look after your plants. Agree to them picking some of your fruit and veg whilst you are away. You come back to nice fresh pickings for yourself. 3 If you’re entering our main Horticultural Show in August then check your plants daily. Take action to feed, water, weed and pick if required. 76
per person. The hall will be open from 7 to 9pm on Friday 9th and also from 8am until 10.15am on the Saturday morning for exhibitors to stage their entries. All exhibitors will be given a complimentary pass to the afternoon show. Classes include flowers, fruit, vegetables, domestic produce (cookery & preserves), photography, wines, arts & crafts and special classes for children up to 14 years of age. Also, in addition to the classes for decorative flower arranging there is a special InterSociety Decorative competition between many local flower clubs. Overall there are 103 different classes, which should make it an enjoyable afternoon for visitors. Classes for Decoratives, Wines, Arts & Crafts are open to all so you don’t have to be a member to enter! Refreshments will be available plus the usual sale of fresh fruit and vegetables from the Seaford Allotment Society. Also look out for the Tombola Stall with the chance to win some lovely prizes. Entry forms are included in members’ 2013 Programme & Show Schedules booklet and on the society’s web site www.seafordhorti.com. Entry forms must be received by 5pm Wednesday 7th August Further information or entry forms are available from Gary Carter 01323891954, Mike Parker 01323898733 or Tom Rennie 01323 492768. This should be a great afternoon - see you all at the show!
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD We have our second full day coach outing to Saville Gardens on Thursday July 18th. After viewing the gardens we then move on to a Thames river cruise before our journey home. If the weather is kind we should have a wonderful day. See your 2013 Programme for departure times.

We all love living by the sea but this can be a problem for some plants in your garden. However, there are many plants that are quite happy provided they are given a little shelter from the salty winds. It is often said that the first thing to do is to take a look at neighbouring gardens. If something is growing well there it will probably be fine in your garden. Alternatively, take a walk along Eastbourne seafront where many years of horticultural experience are shown to best effect. Visit your local Garden Centre where you will always get good advice or find a good book on coastal plants. Finally check “open gardens schemes” in your area and take a notebook with you. If you do live close to the sea then your first line of defence must be a suitable windbreak or screen. Berberis, Escailonia, Evergreen Bamboo, Tamarix or Hebes (above right) will be adequate for the job. Behind them there is a long list of low growing plants that will make a beautiful garden. Some favourites often seen in coastal gardens are Achilla, Alyssum. Aubrietia, Dianthus, Gazania (above left), Geranium, Mesembryanthemums and my favourite Papaver (Poppy). Again a visit to your local garden centre is essential. Finally, plan your garden for all-round interest throughout the year. Don’t just have one big display that’s over in a few weeks - you’ll soon get bored with that. Mike Parker (Chairman) Photos l-r Gazania and Hebe

SEAFORD GARDENING CLUB Has summer arrived at long last?! We seem to have missed out on a spring this year. Even my hedgehog was slow, emerging from hibernation - he is now joined by a rescued female hedgehog (cared for by the Wildlife team all winter) who we have named Henrietta! They will certainly have plenty of slugs and snails to survive on, as well as nightly supplements. Our speaker for May gave a very informative talk on “Edible Gardening” through the seasons. Mrs Barbara Echlin and her husband utilise their average-sized garden to the full with every kind of fruit, vegetable and flower. She amazed us as to how many varieties they manage to grow to service their needs through the year. Barbara helps out in a fruit and vegetable market garden, as well as giving talks on her favourite subject - she joked that she does the talking and her husband does the doing! She explained we import more fruit and veg rather than using home grown, and prices have risen dramatically in recent years. Allotments are under threat from redevelopment whilst there are long waiting lists to have one. Some local growers deliver ‘veggie boxes’ which are useful and convenient for families out in the country or without a garden of their own. Some schools now have a programme to enable the children to ‘grow their own’ - sometimes the results are used for the school meals. Even strips of grass along pavements in towns are dug up and planted with vegetables and fruit trees put in. Most of the slides were of Barbara’s own garden throughout the seasons; the last ones were of all kinds of colourful blossom. She also felt a pond was an

essential addition to the garden as it encourages frogs, toads, damsel and dragonflies and other insects which help pollinate the flowers. One tip she gave us as an effective trap for slugs and snails was a bath of Coca Cola which contains a chemical capable of killing them. It was a very interesting talk enjoyed by us all from someone who loves and cares for their garden. There will not be a talk in July or August as the club takes a summer break. A whole new speakers programme will be announced at the September meeting on the 24th. Any information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit our website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. There are still places left on our 2 outings to Erdington House/Gardens on July 25th and Compton Acres on September 14th. Non-members are welcome to join us - just phone Anne for details.

SEAFORD COMMUNITY GARDEN No sooner had all parties concerned dotted all the i’s and crossed the t’s than the much-talked about classroom building was here, delivered on the huge flatbed lorry pictured. All we had to do, on the last Wednesday of May, was help unload it and, um, construct it. And so it was that a procession of eager volunteers got the timber sorted in under two hours, ferrying boards as long as eight metres from East Street, up the Peace Garden path, through the display garden, negotiating the sharp left into the Community Garden and up to the end, where Dave, James and Robert ensured each piece of the complex build was in the right place for construction in the right order. Fast forward to a week later and volunteers arriving at 9am were treated to all four tongue-and-grooved walls in place inside and out
– though not, apparently, without a little head scratching and some impromptu joinery needed – thanks Dave! And by the end of the morning the roof was on. Job, nearly, done! While all this was going on another team was busily potting up begonia plugs kindly donated by B&Q, some of which were destined for a plant stall at Michael and Pippa Logan’s garden party, see last month’s Seaford Scene, which was generously donating some of the proceeds to us. Because of the building work the polytunnel was full of classroom parts, but with completion of this soon, we should be on course to plant up the beds with the usual tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and chillies. At the time of writing the broad beans were coming on apace, carrots were sprouting green tops and onions were growing well, together with cut-and-come-again salad leaves, which means... it’s time for Saturday opening. So, folks, come and see what we’ve grown for you on Wednesdays from 9.30am until 12.30pm and on Saturdays from 10am until noon, until further notice. We’re told our veg is the best! The Garden Team Photo: The rain held off long enough to unload the boards... with which to build the 8 x 5 metre classroom.

GELLUX is perfect for natural nails, on fingers or toes for instant, long lasting, vibrant colour. The polish dries instantly - no waiting for polish to dry means no accidental smudges and a long lasting glossy finish. GELLUX is a hybrid between traditional nail polish and salon gels, it is applies like a polish but with a hard wearing chip, scratch and fade proof finish that lasts for 15 days. It is easily removed in approx 20 minutes, using finger foil parcels and remover. GELLUX causes no more harm to the natural nail than a traditional nail polish and can even help to protect the natural nail from bumps and breaks. It can be applied over any nail extension system.

Owner Jason, Sussex born and resident of Seaford went into Hairdressing as a Saturday boy at 15, in the aptly named shop ‘Dodgy Norm’s’ in Southwick. With a natural hair cutting ability he undertook a Hairdressing course at City College, Brighton, graduating in 1991. Since then Jason has worked in Vances Barber Shop in Peacehaven, Diamond Geezers in Newhaven and Andy & Marves in Lewes. In 2009 he took the leap of faith and opened his very own shop in Lewes. Three years later and after his increasing popularity, he opened his seconds shop in Seaford. Having his name above the door was a very proud moment, along with the BBA Accreditation. He has still has plans to expand his business further. He has just recently introduced Hot Towel Shaving and soon will be offering Threading too. But Jason prides himself mostly in the quality of his haircuts, and even after 26 years of barbering, maintains that you never know the job completely. ‘There will always be someone with a challenging head of hair, that’s why I love my job so much’.

Scott’s career in Hairdressing was a given as he is one in a family of hairdressers. In 1997, along with his wife, he opened his first ladies hairdressing shop in Horsham, and managed a team of 7 girls, as well as working on the shop floor. By the time he moved on, he was over-seeing two shops and learnt that customer care and reliability were most important when dealing with the general public. His next port of call was at Vances Barber Shop in Peacehaven where he took the opportunity to develop his barbering skills further. ‘It’s an interesting shop to work in. Vance is definitely one of a kind!’ After Vances, Scott travelled to Australia and spent two-and-half years working in salons ‘down under’ which was a great experience. On his return to the UK, he moved to Seaford and worked in local barber shops, building up a firm clientele and eventually with 16 years of experience under his belt, he took the opportunity to launch and manage Jasons new shop in Seaford.
