Welcome
Welcome to the March issue of Seaford Scene. Hopefully by now, the terrible weather we experienced in February will have passed and the country is now drying out! This month’s issue features lots of local news stories along with updates from our favourite clubs and organisations in Seaford. We celebrate St David’s Day on the 1st, Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day on the 4th, followed by Ash Wednesday on the 5th, marking the beginning of Lent. It’s St Patrick’s Day on the 17th and Mother’s Day on the 30th and we also put the clocks forward on the 30th (yay!) so there will definitely be more daylight hours to get out and about in – make sure you put all these dates on your calendars and enjoy your March issue.

Thanks to our great audiences we know we’re appreciated and this year it seems more people have noticed us but we still need you to tell your friends THERE IS A CINEMA IN SEAFORD! You can read about the films, book tickets and get monthly email newsletters by signing up at www.seafordcinema.org where you can also share on Facebook and Twitter, so keep spreading the word! Our home at the Barn Theatre has a well stocked bar, which is open before, during and now also after each performance.
7.30 Fri 14 March
BLUE JASMINE Cert 12A
Woody Allen’s latest film stars Cate Blanchett as Jasmine, a privileged socialite fallen from grace and onto very hard times indeed. When Jasmine is thrown onto her own resources after her husband’s imprisonment,
she finds that they provide poor protection and her subsequent social, emotional and financial melt down makes this definitely not ‘one of the funny ones,’ but possibly one of Allen’s best.
7.30 Fri 28 March
CARANCHO Cert 15
This may be the first Argentinian film you see but it won’t be the last. Described as ‘brutal and smart contemporary noir’ the story follows the eponymous anti-hero Carancho – literally ‘the vulture’ – a lawyer who chases ambulances for a living. While busily encouraging the newly maimed to sue, he falls for a doctor at the hospital and his well repressed conscience is pricked; but can he slough off his criminal past? The film programme, tickets and membership are all available online, at www.seafordcinema.org, Seaford Tourist Centre and on the door. Seaford Community Cinema is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. You’ll be welcome at our screenings in the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane, Seaford, BN25 1QL.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST PANTO WOWS AUDIENCE AT THE BARN The Barn Theatre Company had an air of French sophistication in January (Oh no, they didn’t!) when Beauty and the Beast was set in Franglais de la Mer. This encouraged Steve Llewelyn as Dame Madame Fifi to educate Jacques (Sam Eaton, promoted from the Juniors company) in the proper labelling of chaud bathroom taps. Another very successful transition from the Juniors was Kate Horscraft as Belle, the Beauty, who with complete confidence rescued the intimidating Beast, David Foster, and led him back to his transformation into the handsome Prince Danton. In that guise Shana Edwards took over, after moonlighting as the Ghost, or a villager or a whirlwind - it was hard to keep up. A very strong quartet of Sarah Eaton, Angie Wright, John Tester and Shar Turnbull provided most of the knockabout humour as the selfish sisters Ermengarde and and Esmeralda, a gaily dressed hairdresser Marcel

and a forceful Lambrini-fuelled Essex girl, Monique. Julie Terry relished being all man as Gustave, who admired nothing better than his own reflection. The long-suffering Alphonse, played by John Walsh, fought off false imprisonment by Cath Brooks, threateningly in form as the duplicitous Madame la Folle and restrained his extavagant elder daughters, despite their frequent and increasingly surprising changes of costume, to safely deliver the Prince into Beauty’s arms. Not least were Ann Taylor, Manda Evans and Chris Gable, providing continuity as welcoming villagers, a hospitable suit of armour or a crazed mob. No Panto would be complete without its moral support provided by the excitingly wicked Belladonna, Sue James, and the reassuringly comforting and very English Flora, Jenny Humphries. Tony Betts, as ever a safe pair of hands, took over as Director at a relatively late stage and was backed up a very strong team including Russell Taylor, Musical Director, Stuart Hall, Choreographer, Lawrence Woolven, Sound, Dave Rogers, Lighting, Helena Ng, Set design. Annie Betts, Stage Manager, Sylvia Elder, Prompts and Marilyn Nolan, Front of House. The live music provided by band members, Tony Still, Andy Harsant and Paul Harrington, found the right balance to bring the best out of the singers. The audience members ‘from 2 to 92’ were involved throughout, helpfully pointing out the Ghost, resisting the Beast Potion and singing along in praise of fast food. A good time was had by all! Louise Brown is the local representative for Winstons Wish, a charity set up in 1992 by a clinical psychologist called Julie Stokes who had visited the USA and Canada on a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship. Inspired by what she had seen, she returned to the UK and set up Winston’s Wish. The charity provides support for bereaved children in a variety of ways. They are always looking for new ideas on how they can expand their service and welcome suggestions. Louise answered lots of questions from club members, and then President Janice Vince presented her with a cheque for £300, which was gratefully received. The Martello Rotary Club meets every Monday evening at Seaford Golf Club and welcomes new members. If you are interested call 01323 873389.

THE Alfriston Primary School Big Art Event
The Coach House Gallery, Alfriston 14/15/16th March The children at Alfriston Primary School have been busy throughout January at a series of Art Workshops run by local artists. The children aged 4 to 11 years have produced a varied catalogue of work from landscapes to still life (with a lot of messy fun in between!). An exhibition of their work will be on show at The Coach House Gallery in Alfriston from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th March, Friday and Saturday, 10am 5pm and Sunday 11am - 5pm. Please come along to the exhibition to view their fabulous artwork and to purchase a unique oneoff piece of art. All proceeds will be going towards the school. The children would like to say a huge thank you to the local artists Zan Stevenson, Louise Burt, John Amos, Suzanne Taylor, Amanda Stone, Jess Levine and Vincent Matthews for so generously giving up their free time to run the workshops. In addition the artists have kindly donated a piece of their artwork to raise funds for the school and these will be exhibited at the gallery. Their art donations are to be raffled and tickets can be purchased from The Coach House Gallery, Sea Salt Café in Seaford or from Andy Anderson & Son Locksmith, tel: 07973 129550.

Gellux Nails and Manicures
Gellux is perfect for natural nails, on fingers or toes for instant, long lasting, vibrant colour. The polish dries instantly - no waiting for polish to dry means no accidental smudges and a long lasting glossy finish. Gellux is a hybrid between traditional nail polish and salon gels, it is applied like a polish but with a hard wearing chip, scratch and fade proof finish that lasts up to 15 days. It is easily removed in approx 20 minutes, using finger foil parcels and remover. Gellux causes no more harm to the natural nail than a traditional nail polish and can even help to protect the natural nail from bumps and breaks. It can be applied over any nail extension system.

Make your Mother’s day From the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes for ever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires.
Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heart-warming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on multiple roles in the family – carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt

as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us. The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine). Mother’s Day is on 30th March this year. Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent – Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential. By Alex Albrighton

Running Commentary... This month a local Seaford runner describes his introduction to running and his first marathon... I attempted jogging when I was a teenager back in the dark ages when the standard of footwear and training advice was prehistoric by today’s standards. I quickly acquired a common knee injury and was told by my doctor that I wasn’t suited to running. Mountain biking was always a favourite pastime, and after a 30-year break gave running another crack. Fortunately, Seaford Striders are the local running club and they proved to be a friendly lot and not a bunch of weirdos (well, maybe one or two) with plenty of advice and encouragement. Running with others was a revelation and I improved immediately. Starting with 10km races, I gradually increased to half marathons and the Bewl Water 15-miler, after which I remember thinking why would anyone want to run further! Despite words of wisdom from the seasoned marathon runners in the Club, I vowed never to attempt a marathon, being a natural born pessimist and probably influenced by my doctor’s advice of years ago. The catalyst that sparked my desire to enter a marathon is etched in my memory. A lady member of the Club had entered the Beachy Head Marathon as her first. She was already a very competent, capable and quick runner who’d put in all the training but was extremely anxious the fortnight before the race. I was marshalling at the 16-mile point when she came flying down the hill past me towards the Cuckmere River. She looked totally elated, with no sign of anxiety. That’s when I knew I had to run one. I chose a fairly simple training plan to fit in with my work patterns and to my surprise I really enjoyed the structured 12-week schedule, with the longest run being 20 miles. With a positive mental attitude and most of all,
With a fully qualified teacher, Fitness League Classes combine movement with a focus on developing good posture and improving strength and stamina.
Classes are suitable for all abilities, ages and shapes and are taught to music in a fun and friendly environment. Free trial class, no experience needed, convenient Seaford venue. Call Jackie on 01435 812950 or 07779316595 or wood555@aol.com

a desire not to let down my Club I picked the Halstead (Essex) Marathon as my first. Once again I was fortunate to be accompanied on some of the training runs and the big day by another highly capable lady Strider. She was much quicker than I, so it must have been purgatory for her to run at my pace when she could have posted a really respectable time on her own. I’d done a half marathon in 2hrs 01mins but this was unknown territory, and having a fear of injury I’d be happy with anything under 5hrs. So, at the age of 50, off I went. It was a cold morning, a light breeze and the rain had stopped 10 minutes before the start – perfect! After 4 miles I felt a million dollars. At 7 miles my knee started to grumble… slight panic, but kept calm. At 9 miles it felt no worse so ignored it. At halfway I was enjoying the running but at 16 I hit the wall even though I’d done the training and had eaten and hydrated well. My head started to drop but my partner took charge. The fact that I got round in under 5hrs is due entirely to her. With my head telling me to pack it in and feeling about as energetic as a sloth she spent the last 10 miles nagging me in the best possible way. I lost count of the number of times I was told to ‘get those knees up’ and ‘you’ll be gutted if you miss your target’. With 1.5 miles to go the route became a grassy slope and that fired me with the energy to overtake runners but was promptly told to slow up, don’t go too soon. Soon it was back onto tarmac and into Halstead. We turned the corner to the finish and caught sight of the clock registering 4hrs 47mins. I was over the moon. My finishing time was slow compared to many who have run the distance and overcome personal adversity, but, was chuffed to be pronounced a ‘real runner now’ by the Club Captain and can truly appreciate his description of it not being possible to train for the last 6 miles because those are ‘in the head’. Prior knowledge is a great thing and a few months later the tougher off-road Beachy Head Marathon proved much easier by comparison. I truly believe that with the right training, if I can run a marathon, anyone can. Compiled by Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to Seaford Kurlers’ article for Seaford Scene.
info@nutritionforall.co.uk
At last spring is underway with the welcome sight of the spring bulbs. I look forward every year to the first snowdrops and daffodils. They always provide a welcome glow and never let us down. Seaford Kurlers are in full flow with new members joining. Some have read all about the club in Seaford Scene and some have seen us in action at the Downs Leisure Centre and curiosity has got the better of them to come in and find out more. A number of our members are skilled ex-bowls players who are finding that the bending has become too difficult. They are able to excel at kurling as the rules and skills are very similar in both sports. Unlike bowls, we have pushers to launch the stones if bending/ kneeling is a problem. So no need to give up the sport scene – just come and join us.
I am looking for 10 people who want to ... lose some excess weight healthily, Drop a dress size or 2 and keep it off. Do you want to lead a healthy lifestyle, increase energy & vitality? Are you a meal skipper? What you will get:

How to avoid a costly divorce in 5 steps Emma van Bunnens, a Solicitor specialising in matrimonial and divorce law explores how divorce lawyers do not have to cost the earth in legal fees.
along the way with helpful issues to think about which perhaps you may not have even thought about.
The cost of divorcing and settling the financial aspect of a divorce can be hugely expensive for clients. More than ever before the cost of solicitors is being questioned by clients. More and more family lawyers are looking at ways of making the whole process more affordable to the client. Emma is a pioneer of fixed fee divorce. She believes the costs of divorce are often the main concern of potential clients. This is why Emma offers a fixed fee scheme for clients wishing to divorce and needing to know the precise costs involved.
3. Attend mediation. Mediators are qualified to give independent advice and help couples reach agreement in all issues including finances and children. Once an agreement has been reached then a memorandum of understanding is drawn up. You will then need a solicitor to draft a Consent Order reflecting the terms of the memorandum which will then be binding upon the parties.
The effect of the decimation of legal aid from April 2013 has led to some firms being innovative in the fee structures they are using to attract new clients. Emma has for some time undertaken fixed fee divorces which have proven very popular. Clients like to know the costs up front and know they are not escalating costs with every phone call or email they send or receive. Clients can be reassured the cost will be as set out and agreed and will be no more. There are certain steps which clients can undertake to minimise their costs whilst at the same time receiving expert and professional advice. These steps include: 1. Consider divorce counselling before you start proceedings. Effective counselling can encourage communication between divorcing/separating couples and prevent costly fraught, acrimonious and costly legal proceedings. 2. If you are able to, sit down with your spouse/ civil partner and try to agree on how the assets are going to be distributed, you can do this without lawyers in the first instance but it is important that legal advice is sought in relation to any agreement reached. Then you can approach a lawyer to codify the agreement into a court order. Lawyers can assist
46
4. Although lawyers can be an enormous support to you, you should be careful not to use your lawyer for emotional support as this is when legal fees start to escalate. You should vent your frustrations to a friend or family member and then turn to your family lawyer to provide them with instructions and take legal advice. 5. Ask whether your solicitor does their own advocacy in Court proceedings. This means your solicitor will attend court and argue your case for you at court rather than instructing a barrister to attend on their behalf. Although sometimes a barrister is necessary for some Hearings, Emma takes the majority of her own advocacy herself which provides continuity and peace of mind to clients. This also saves clients the costs of instructing a barrister. Follow these simple tips and your divorce will not end costing the earth.
Call Emma van Bunnens on 01342 310600 to discuss any family issues you may have or to receive a quote for a fixed fee divorce.

MERCREAD YOUTH CENTRE It’s good to be back in full swing after the Christmas break, and good too to be able to celebrate young people’s generosity of spirit. Before Christmas several of our ‘regulars’ raised £369 with a Bring and Buy in aid of the Phillippines disaster and this was augmented by a further £112 with a tombola on our stall at Late Night Shopping. Hard on their heels are the Youth Forum who organised a Valentine’s Day cake sale at Seaford Head School in aid of cystic fibrosis. We are very grateful too that the Youth Centre has been the beneficiary of others’ generosity with Archway’s Christmas Concert raising £1,290 for us. Hopefully funds such as these will allow us to put on new activities to reflect the wishes of our young people.

Where there’s blame... I am often asked whether a spouse’s behaviour would have an effect upon the financial settlement following a divorce. Indeed there is a common misconception that one person’s ‘bad’ behaviour will mean that their spouse will receive a larger financial settlement by way of compensation for one and penalisation for the other. But is that right? Conduct is one of the factors that the court should take into account when looking at the appropriate financial settlement within divorce proceedings. However the law is very clear in that the conduct will only be taken into account if it is so serious that it would be unfair for the court to disregard it. Of course deciding on whether conduct is such that it should be taken into account will be subject to interpretation. I often hear comments such as “It was my husband who went off with someone else so why should he get anything?” and “She recklessly gambled away lots of our money so why should she get half of my assets?”. When looking at the relevance of conduct in divorce there are two types to be considered: personal misconduct and financial misconduct.
husband and where a husband committed incest with the children of the family. Thankfully these types of cases are extremely rare. Financial misconduct is normally defined when one party recklessly or purposely squanders assets prior to the divorce proceedings, thereby reducing the amount of the ‘matrimonial pot’. Examples of this are gambling and spending money on unnecessary things like expensive holidays and cars. In such circumstances the court will try to put right the circumstances by ‘adding back’ the money or assets that have been spent and continuing on the basis that the party still has them. It is also important to note that conduct during the course of the divorce proceedings, such as failing to comply with a court order, is not usually punished by providing a lower settlement to the ‘guilty’ party. However they can be penalised by the court ordering that that party pay a contribution towards the other party’s costs. This is known as ‘litigation conduct’.
To summarise, it is quite unusual for a conduct claim to be successful, especially if the misconduct is personal. It is therefore very important to seek Personal misconduct involves some sort of legal advice before embarking on such a claim as ‘bad behaviour’ on the part of one party. Settling in Seaford
by Alan Lindsay
We’d been thinking of moving to East Sussex for some time. Some friends were already here, in Seaford, and had sung its praises. So we were soon doing the rounds of the estate agents and exploring this nice, quirky little town by the sea that could have been the inspiration for ‘Warmington-on-sea’ in the BBC’s ‘Dad’s Army’. I discovered that on a clear day in Church Street you can see two public loos. We moved into our new house during the arctic blasts of March 2013. I say ‘new’ only because it was new to us. In reality the house is almost as old as me, having been built sometime in the sixties – I’m not sure which of us has worn better. The Seaford sea breezes and howling gales had not been kind to the house over the years, and, together with many previous owners’ obvious partiality to cigarettes, meant it needed a great deal of TLC inside and out before we could truly think of it as home. And so it came to pass that workmen from a wide spectrum of trades came to the house to estimate and plan the works, amid much head shaking, sharp intakes of breath and many mugs of tea.
S. J. Hampton
I had given up work for a while to decorate and organise the renovations – we wanted things sorted out as quickly as possible. We had one bedroom, arranged as a kind of bedsit, with only the kitchen and a bathroom for our use. Other rooms were crammed with our stuff, while one room was left empty to be worked on. When completed, the empty room was filled with stuff from one of the other rooms, which in turn was worked on. And so on. Like one of those little puzzles from a Christmas cracker where you slide plastic squares around to complete the puzzle, with only one empty space giving room for manoeuvre. The carpets, curtains and lampshades left by the previous owners were of a bygone age. The curtains provided our dust-sheets and the remainder was taken to Cradle Hill. Budgets for both time and money were soon depleted, but I was enjoying working with my hands and doing something different from my usual day job in the Life and Pensions industry. At least in the beginning. Modern paints do not readily adhere to the high gloss paints of yesteryear, so the door frames all had to be sanded to within an inch of their lives, despite the hazard of lead in old paint. Wallpaper paste was strong stuff back in the sixties, if my poor blistered office worker’s hands were anything to go by. The original wallpaper was often covered with other layers, where lazy decorators of the past had just slapped on new paper, and in some cases, gloss paint. Like the rings in a tree trunk, the wallpaper and paint layers told their own story. I invested in a steamer which removed the paint and wallpaper quickly and effectively, but often the plaster underneath too, so it was back to the scraping. At least the rooms got bigger. Before pasting up our new paper, I painted messages on the bare plaster for the decorators of the future – grumpy notes about old wallpaper sprinkled with a few choice expressions well used in 2013. The house is finished now. We are happy with the result and proud of what we have achieved. No doubt the decorators of the past felt happy and proud too, when they stood and admired their own handiwork, way back when. Perhaps we should have treated their efforts with a little more respect. When we are gone, the house will inherit the decorators of the future. They may well look aghast at our dated décor and strip the walls to the bare plaster again. I hope they are not easily offended.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB This month marks the end of my first year as Chairman which I have enjoyed and I hope our members and visitors have found our meetings also enjoyable, informative and friendly. Our membership fee of £23 is very good value, meaning that our 11 meetings each cost less than £3. We provide 2 hours of entertainment, companionship and the opportunity to learn the art of flower arranging for a fraction of the cost of a cinema or theatre ticket. March 20th marks the end of 2013-2014 with presentation of awards and our donation to Sussex Air Ambulance, and the beginning of 2014-2015. After our AGM we shall welcome Gina Bowman from Pevensey, an expert on fuchsias to talk about her experiences and the qualities and varieties of fuchsia. We are a friendly club that welcomes former members and visitors for £4.50 with no limit on the number of visits. Of course we hope more people will want to join us. We exhibit in the flower arranging classes at the Summer Show of the Seaford and District Horticultural Society as well as helping at Flower Festivals organised by Churches in Seaford..

3 Having weeded the boarders you may be left with patches of bare soil. Bare soil will quickly loose water and dry out in dry spells. Take this opportunity to add plenty of garden compost or manure. 3 This is the last month for planting bare rooted trees and shrubs. Firm the soil after planting, water well and apply a mulch to conserve moisture. 3 Cut down or trim back all growth for perennials that have over-wintered in the boarders. Give them some fertilizer or mulch. 3 Towards the end of the month split up or divide Polyanthus or Primulas as the flowers go over. Trim off most of the foliage and replant. 3 Prepare your seedbeds for vegetables and herbs. Dig over and break soil down. Go over with a rake to smooth out lumps. Apply blood, fish and bone or seaweed fertilizer about two weeks before sowing. Rake in and leave the bed to warm up.

this country and will reach a height of 25 metres after 25 years. It likes a sunny position in a well-drained spot. It flowers in May but these are hidden by the pairs of large white bracts up to eight inches in length. Both male and female parts are produced separately on the same branches, and the flowers are said to be slightly fragrant. If you want to see this fine tree in May then visit Highdown Gardens in West Sussex or Nyman’s also in West Sussex. Mike Parker

suspect that if you were walking around a large garden in this part of the country or even any large garden whilst away on holiday, there would be one tree that you would identify with great confidence to all those around you. That’s a “Handkerchief Tree” I hear you say! The Handkerchief Tree (Davidia involucrata) may also be known as the Dove Tree or Ghost Tree. This is the tree with large waving decorative white bracts dangling below the flowering branches in May. In a slight breeze the tree can be spotted from quite a long way away. It was named after the French Jesuit Abbe David in 1869. Although it originates from China it was first brought to this country in 1905 by E.H. Wilson. It is said that he brought thousands of its seed to the UK but it never germinated. The year after this incident many of the seeds germinated after being exposed to a cold winter. It was later learned that this was the key to germination of its seed. It grows well in to d
This is a good time to do some spring-cleaning in the shed or greenhouse. In particular spend some time checking all those plastic containers and boxes of chemicals, powders and fertilizers stored on the shelf or under the bench. All of these products will have a shelf life or use by date and it is important not to exceed this date. It is very tempting to use something out of date especially when it may have been expensive when purchased but it may be a false economy. Dispose of these old products properly. Do not put them down the drain, in the dustbin or pour behind the garden shed. Take them to our local recycling tip (assuming we still have one!) where they can be disposed of safely. It is a good practice to get a fresh supply of chemicals each year and only to buy them in small quantities so they are not wasted. Keep all chemicals high up on a shelf and in a locked shed well away from children and pets. Read instructions for use carefully every time you use them.

Seaford Gardening Club Perhaps the less said about our recent weather the better. We have had the odd sunny, warmer days but then the cold winds have returned – again, and again! Spring must be around the corner somewhere – at least my hellebores are giving some cheer with their delightful colours and speckled petals.

Our speaker for January, Christopher Rudd, related the history of Ashdown Forest – all 500 acres of it. The wooded areas were vastly used for hunting many years ago when deer, boar and even bears roamed. There are still traces of a Roman road which led a direct route to Lewes. Also, much evidence of iron workings and its production can be found in various places especially near Friar’s Gate and The Ponds of Crowborough Warren. The two words ‘hatch’ and ‘gate’ attached to village names depicted a way in or out of the forest. The Hatch Inn is a pleasant eatery and there is the Ashdown Forest Centre to visit for information etc. Fifteen per cent of the original trees in the forest were destroyed in the 1987 hurricane, including a fine copse of beeches which has never fully recovered. William Cobbett once quoted that the forest “was the ugliest place” but nowadays people wander through it for its beauty, peace and quiet. Christopher showed us slides of scenes through the seasons and mentioned the A A Milne drawings and stories of Winnie the Pooh and his pals. Many children and their families still visit the famous bridge to play the game of ‘Pooh sticks’! He kept us amused with his sense of humour, quotes and poems for over an hour and will certainly be invited to return to give us further talks as he has numerous interesting subjects to speak about. Our next talk, by Clive Hamblin and entitled ‘Sussex: A-Z’ is on Wednesday 26th March at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, commencing at 7.30pm (Please use the front door opposite Tesco). The fee is £2 for a visitor or £10 to join for the year – there are no extra charges. Refreshments are available and raffles are held on some evenings. Come and enjoy a friendly, enjoyable and informative evening. Everyone is welcome. More information available by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc The 2014 outings programme is now available.

It must be the effect of our classroom and being able to sit comfortably around a large table with the tea and biccies, but, while the gales rage and the rain hammers down, we’ve been doing a lot of planning. What’s more, it’s not just been a talking shop and these plans have resulted in action. In no particular order, then, we have created a new website – well, to be more accurate, web wizard Mick Barrett has built it, and all we have to do is the easy bit – provide the material for it. Find it at www.seaford-sussex. co.uk/scg. It is only partially complete but, like a garden in winter, the structure is there enabling you to get a good idea of what it will be like when everything has come up. On it right now you’ll find a history of the garden, how to be a volunteer, Jan’s Plant of the Month feature and how to contact us. To come, for example, is a gallery of images recording the garden and what we do. So, Mick, our huge thanks for your generosity. And talking of generosity, another big hug is due to B&Q who donated some terrific shrubs and trees, including several varieties of acer, which can be found in the sales area. Also a huge thank you to the Friends of the Crouch for their generous cheque. But back to planning, and no sooner had we started talking about creating a garden calendar resource for the classroom than Katie and Plumpton College student, Cameron, had grabbed a square-scale notebook and a tape

The idea, Katie explained, is that she will scale up the drawings, and on them mark what is planted and record how well the seeds have done and, in the case of fruit and veg, how well they have produced. This information will, of course, be available to everyone, volunteers or visitors, giving you one more reason to come on in and visit us in the Crouch Gardens every Wednesday from 9.30am-12.30pm. And that brings us to Seedy Sunday, attended by Diana and Lynn at Brighton’s appropriately named Corn Exchange. We learnt that this event is under threat due to proposed EU legislation that will license seed production and possibly outlaw small seed producers. Garden Organic and Heritage Seed Library have started a Save Our Seeds Campaign – go to www.gardenorganic.org.uk for more details of how you can help. In the garden the soil is being warmed under cloches for early beetroot, radish and lettuce, bulbs are doing well and seeds have been sown for peppers. Already the broad beans are growing strongly and we are sowing sweet peas. Potatoes, which the RHS recommended for pots, are being chitted for bags in the hope that this method will perform better than last year. Lastly, best wishes to Jan G, who had an operation recently. We need you back! The Garden Team Photos: Katie and Cameron measure up the garden (left), with no power at the garden Veronica, Jordan and Mike, boil the kettle using bottled gas.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY PUT SOME ZING IN YOUR SPRING! SINGING IS GOOD FOR YOU! Simon Halsey, an eminent, world-renowned choral conductor and director, wrote recently in the Times newspaper that the BEST thing you can do in 2014 is raise your voice and join or rejoin a choir. Singing is good for your health, your well-being and your social life. And it’s cheaper than joining a gym. If you want to sing, just come along and get started. In no time at all, you will be hooked! If you are fortunate to live within striking distance of London, there is a bewildering choice of choirs to choose from, singing great varieties of music from jazz and pop through to classical. However, in this attractive corner of East Sussex, Seaford Choral Society can offer an experience of singing choral works with committed, loyal members who all enjoy singing together on a regular basis.
Sion Parry, our Music Director, is a youthful and exciting conductor who makes our weekly music-making fun and enjoyable. And like most choirs, we are always ready to welcome new members warmly. No audition is necessary, just come along and join us. If you are new to the area, it will introduce you to a variety of local people from varying backgrounds, but all with one common passion – we love choral singing!
To find out more about our choir, visit our new website on www.seaford-choral-society.com To contact us please email info@seaford-choral-society.com or telephone our Secretary on 01323 482387.

Seaford man, 85, wins gold in rowing championship At the age of 85, many would think that Weston Towler should be slowing down. But he has no intention of putting his feet up or taking it easy. Mr Towler, from Seaford, is yet again the proud owner of his third gold medal from the British Indoor Rowing Championships (BIRC), held in Nottingham at the end of 2013. Weston was this year’s eldest, and most dedicated, competitor with his nearest rival aged 79. In fact, he is so dedicated that there were no other entrants in his age bracket. He rowed the 2,000 metres in 09:02.4 minutes. Mr Towler took up indoor rowing at the Downs Leisure Centre when he retired 24 years ago and trains three times a week. He has now competed in the championships 18 times and won six medals. He has also competed in the world championships in the USA. When asked what he hopes to achieve this year, he said: “I just want to do as well as I possibly can and come away being satisfied with my performance. Rowing is addictive and I definitely have a competitive streak in me. Indoor rowing exercises the whole body and helps the lungs work. It’s a great activity to help to me keep fit. My incentive is to keep pushing myself and to try and retain some of my past performance times.” Weston continued, “The facilities at the leisure centre really are fantastic and the staff are really attentive. I thoroughly enjoy my time there and would encourage everyone, whatever their age, to get and stay physically active.” Stewart Angell, Health & Fitness Manager for Wave Leisure, said: “Weston is an inspiration to us all and continues to be year after year. We see him here every week without fail, and his dedication to keeping himself active is admired by all our members and staff. I think we all secretly hope that we’ll all still be going as strong as he is when we are in our eighties!”

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter. Charity Champion undertakes new role Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) is very pleased to add a ‘Charity Champion’ to its ranks with the appointment of Paula Woolven as Community and Fundraising Manager. Paula has been recognised recently in a national award scheme for people who dedicate their time to charity and fundraising, and was rewarded for her long-term commitment to community volunteering for organisations which currently include Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors and DaSH Junior Football Club. Paula said, “I first became aware of CTLA when I made a group booking for my charity theatre class for young people, and was really pleased with their service and the friendly driver they provided. When I looked into their organisation further, I was so impressed with their dedication to providing affordable, accessible transport for people who find it difficult to access normal forms of transport. I didn’t hesitate to apply for the position when it was advertised. I know that I will be working with great volunteers and staff at the CTLA.” Operations Manager, Derek Barnett, said, “We are delighted that Paula has joined us. I am certain that her enthusiasm and experience will be a real asset for us. I expect Paula to play a vital role for us by improving our fund-raising capabilities to ensure we can reach out to our local community and satisfy the ever increasing demand for our services.”

Save the Children Seaford – can you help us? In 2012 Save the Children helped 10 million children. We have a small but active committee in the Seaford area and we are one of the most successful local fundraising branches in the South East. Over the last four years we have raised over £13,000 with our direct fundraising activities and have also received nearly £70,000 in legacy donations.
We have always tried to keep the costs associated with our fundraising to a bare minimum and as part of this commitment we are now trying to collect the email addresses of the many people who have supported our events over the years. This will enable us to stay in touch with existing and new supporters and let them know what we are doing at zero cost. We are always looking for new volunteers to help at our events or to just come along and join in. There are loads of different ways you can help, and those that do get in touch are always pleasantly surprised that they can make a real difference without having to commit too much of their time. Every £1 we raise makes a genuine difference to the lives of children here in the UK and around the world. In the autumn of 2013 we were able to make an emergency donation of £500 from raised funds to the DEC appeal following the typhoon in the Philippines. Some of the different ways our volunteers help include attending or helping at our Spring and Autumn fairs or coming along to one of our evening events such as wine tastings or themed suppers. Last year we had a wonderful summer garden party and we also took part in a local children’s football tournament. You might like to bake a cake, organise a quiz, buy or sell Christmas cards,

In February we celebrated the Chinese New Year, this being the Year of the Horse. The horse is part of a 12year cycle of animals that make up the Chinese zodiac. After our painting session we broke for a traditional Chinese lunch. We all brought along Chinese food and drinks and made a delicious banquet. The food and good company made this a very enjoyable occasion. Our Chinese teacher Eric brought along his home-cooked chicken dish, and the variety of different flavours and textures was delightful. The social aspect of this group adds greatly to the enjoyment of the painting class. If you would like to try this art form or know more about it please telephone: 07986 800730

The Inner Wheel Club of Seaford To celebrate the formation of Inner Wheel 90 years ago the “Wheels” charity project was formulated by the Association President, Gill Rowley. Every club in Great Britain and Ireland was invited to provide a wheeled item for the benefit of a charity in their own locality during this very special year. The 10th January each year is Inner Wheel Day, when all clubs nationally and internationally commemorate the creation of the organisation. Seaford Club decided to support the Wheels project and recognise the date with a coffee morning to raise enough money to buy a bedside locker with wheels on it for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. Last week President Jean was invited to the Hospice’s beautiful new premises and was greeted by Tony Lees (past Chairman of the Trustees) and John Summers (Legacies and Tribute Fund Manager). She was totally impressed by the efficient and sensible way in which it is run. Its running costs are 90% met by donation and subscription from the public. Committed volunteers operate in most of the ancillary posts, freeing up health care professionals to look after patients. Photo: Jean was delighted to present a cheque for the locker to Senior Nurse Pauline Simpson, who accepted it on behalf of the Hospice.

East Blatchington Lectures The East Blatchington Lectures, such a success last year, starts a new series this month, at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford. And appropriately, the first will be given by its Rector, the Rev Canon Andrew Mayes. His will be an illustrated talk about his new book, Beyond the Edge, which is particularly for people who wish to go deeply into a spiritual life. It will be on Tuesday, March 4th at 2.30pm, and everyone is welcome. Entry is £5, including refreshments, payable on the door, or from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, Church Street, Seaford. The Lectures are held monthly through until August. Circumstances have meant the programme as stated in the January issue of Seaford Scene has had to be slightly amended. It is now: April 1
Diana Crook, describing the delightfully malicious diaries of Mrs Dudeney of Lewes, which had to be withheld from publication for 40 years.
May 6 Ann Poulter, who will be talking about the author Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. June 3
Kay Blackburn, giving an illustrated talk about 6the artist Stanley Spencer
July 1
Karen McCreedy, with an illustrated talk entitled: “Reel to Real Heroes – Actors at War”.
August 5
Simon Brett, the author whose 80 books include the very popular comedy detective tales and Radio 4 series featuring the usually struggling actor Charles Paris.

Rotary Club of Seaford Downs 60 Plus Club
On a recent Wednesday afternoon the Rotary Club of Seaford President, Michael Logan, visited the Downs 60 Plus Club at their premises in the grounds of the Downs Leisure Centre. This was to hand over a donation from Rotary to help the 60 Plus Club with requirements for storage facilities, furniture and signage. Meeting Chairman Sheila Barnard, Michael was given a tour of the Club facilities and met many of the members, as well as seeing the new cupboards and shelves that had been paid for by the £350 donation. The visit was very enjoyable, especially when some of the ladies decided to help President Michael to improve his knitting skills. It would be true to say that there remains room for further improvement!
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
Sarah Playforth and Hearing dog Eve Cockerpoo (Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle cross) came to lunch with the Rotary Club of Seaford recently. Her talk was very interesting and inspirational. In 1979 Bruce Fogle, father of Ben, saw a Hearing Dog scheme in the USA, and was impressed. Over the next couple of years a scheme for the UK was devised and launched at Crufts 1982 in conjunction with several businesses, charities and organisations. In the following year, from the Charity’s south east headquarters, the first hearing dog, Lady, was placed. In 1999 a second centre was opened in the north of England thanks to a BBC Lifeline appeal. In 1992 HRH The Princess Royal became Patron of the Charity, and she continues to support the Charity. Dogs are obtained from the Charity’s own kennel Club

Accredited breeding scheme, from reputable breeders, from members of the public, and a small number from rescue centres. Then the recruits go to puppy socialising with volunteers from about 8 weeks old until around 12 months. Next they begin their training to qualify as a hearing dog, with careful matching between the dog and recipient. After this the human/canine pair spend a week at a training centre where the required sounds are learned, e.g. door knocker/bell, phone etc. The dogs are trained to show a paw or nudge if there is a noise, and then to guide the recipient to the source. In case of emergency such as a fire, they lie flat which is the danger signal. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train around 300 dogs per year, and the cost per dog is around £50,000. All money is obtained from the generosity of individuals, groups, companies and other organisations. Sarah’s dog, Eve, is now approaching retirement – she has some arthritis, so in April she will be replaced. But she will be kept as a pet, a reward for her faithfulness and hard work. Rotary Club of Seaford Supports Theatre Juniors
Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) were delighted to welcome President Mike Logan, from the Rotary Club of Seaford to rehearsals for ‘Grease’ – the world’s favourite musical. A cheque for £500 was presented to the Barn Theatre President, Shar Turnbull, to kick start SMTJ’s appeal to equip the orchestra pit with permanent instruments that can be used for productions, fund band rehearsals and to give tuition to young people at minimal or no cost. Junior Director, Paula Woolven, feels that there has been a serious decline in the number of young people being given the opportunity to learn an instrument at school with ever increasing charges for after school lessons and the average cost of ‘borrowing’ an instrument to practice on being in the region of £150-£250 per year. “We don’t make GCSE science students buy their own microscopes,” said Paula, “so why are music students put at an immediate disadvantage? If our members want to learn a musical instrument or have vocal coaching we

want to remove any hurdles in their way. Music can turn peoples’ lives around and give them confidence and hope, and we can’t thank our friends at the Rotary Club enough for helping make dreams a reality.” The funding from the Rotary Club will be used to purchase a full drum kit and percussion equipment, and SMTJ are appealing for anyone who would like to sponsor another instrument to contact them at paulawoolven@hotmail.com
My Gambia Diary
Back in November 2013 we featured Catherine Sage’s plans to go with a group to Gambia. The trip was arranged by Sussex Central YMCA with the goal of teaching young people skills for maintaining high standards of behaviour, personal development and direction in their education. Cathy has now returned from an epic adventure and honoured us at the Rotary Club of Seaford by giving a presentation at one of our regular lunch meetings. The quality of that presentation, created entirely by herself, was excellent both in its content as well as its professionalism. She has generously allowed us access to her diary of her experiences, and below is a small part of that document. Friday 20th of December: The weather was very sunny in the morning so we sunbathed by the pool and caught our last rays of sun before flying back to England. The flight back was all on time and we landed in Gatwick at 11pm – home at midnight. This whole experience has taught me a lot about different cultures and I have also learnt a lot about myself. Even in preparations before going to Gambia, I was able to organise a coffee morning, which gave me a good feeling as I raised money and so many people helped me. When at the coffee morning, a man mentioned the Rotary Club and how they might be interested in helping me also, so I was really pleased to have such a positive response. The money raised from the coffee morning, cake sale, pub quiz and the Rotary Club covered my travel to

the Gambia which I was really happy about. The Rotary Club wrote an article on me that was published in the Seaford Gazette, Sussex Express and Seaford Scene. This may have led Anne Bickmore (my swimming teacher) to recognise me and contact me with the news that her charity may be able to donate clothes for us to bring to Gambia. This also gave me a feeling of community as everyone is willing to help each other out within our community, which can go on to help people across the world! When in Gambia I was learning each day. The children were so happy when we gave them simple objects like pencils and balloons, which may not seem like a lot to us. Every day we would see children smiling, laughing and waving. When speaking with the Gambian adults, a recurring theme was about how in Gambia everybody gets along. The Muslims and the Christians live together in harmony. They celebrate each others’ festivals and happily marry into other religions and they see no need for war. The Gambians also seem to have respect for their president. The country is developing and changing all of the time and I would be very interested to visit again. I aim to travel more in the future and look into volunteering again. I hope this experience will be one of many! A Good Read My Autobiography by Alex Ferguson
Everyone knows who Alex Ferguson is – controversial, yes, but without doubt the most successful football manager of modern times. On its release, this became one of the fastest selling football books of all time, with fans queuing at midnight to get their hands on a copy. Headlines were made by Ferguson’s pronouncements on the quality of his own players and those who starred for other teams. Shortly afterwards, the book hit the headlines when readers discovered a number of factual errors in the text. Bearing all of that in mind, should you buy a copy? If you are a Manchester United fan, then the answer is that you probably have one already. If not, what will you get? The book mainly focuses on Ferguson’s last seasons in charge at Old Trafford, and his final year in particular,
with some detailed rundowns of key games. In between, there are chapters devoted to memorable friends and adversaries – notably Roy Keane, David Beckham, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Ferguson tells a good story, and as you might expect, he has a huge stock of anecdotes about his time in charge. He also shows an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and offers a real insight into the scouting and signing process at a Premier League club. However, if you have read any of the articles published at the time the book was released, chances are that you have heard the best tales already, and certainly the best lines. The chapter on Keane is a prime example – the argument in the changing room is undoubtedly dramatic, but comes as no real surprise. The now legendary boot-kicking incident with Beckham is equally familiar, and offers no great insight. I bought this hoping to learn something new about what makes Ferguson tick and how he achieved his phenomenal success. I finished it rather disappointed, feeling that I hadn’t found out a great deal – other than the general message that if Fergie is not always right, then he is 99% of the time. For the fans, a must. For the general reader, maybe not.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE HOLDS ITS AGM This year’s annual general meeting of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George was held at the Green Man, Ringmer, on Monday 10th February. The major event of the evening was the election of a new President which was necessary following the death of its first President, the late Don Mabey MBE. Laurie Holland was unanimously elected for the post. Laurie was the first Mayor of Seaford and is now, amongst his many charitable commitments and offices an Honorary Freeman of the town of Seaford. Maeve Mabey, who organises the fund-raising at the branch events, presented her late husband’s Jewel of Office to the Branch, which Chairman Bob Peedle MBE then placed around the neck of the new President. The new post of Vice President was created at the meeting and its first elected incumbent is Steve Saunders from Newhaven. New committee members were Jan White, Frank Holland, Liz Holland and Linda Wallraven.
The Chairman outlined the year’s activities, especially the church service and formal dinner in Alfriston to celebrate St George’s Day, 23rd April. Other events will include HM The Queen’s official birthday, the Battle of Britain and Trafalgar Night as well as the usual lunches. The committee was charged with liaising with other local organisations and councils and helping with any of this year’s commemorations of the start of the First World War. On display were pictures of HM The Queen, Patron of The Royal Society of St George, and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. These had been given to the branch by member Colonel Keith Barker. When the AGM was over, members were treated to a splendid buffet provided by the Green Man. When the night’s raffle was drawn another £100 had been added to the funds. The branch’s surplus funds are used to buy gifts for local worthwhile organisations and charities. The Chairman announced that a special tribute to Don Mabey will be broadcast on SeahavenFM, 96.3fm, and on line on SeahavenFM.com on Saturday 8th March from 3pm. The programme will include details of his life in the RAF, the RAFA, the Seaford Head Golf Club, the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George and as an honorary Freeman of the Town of Seaford. At the AGM, the new Branch President, Laurie Holland, with the royal pictures presented recently by Colonel Keith Barker. Her Majesty The Queen is the Patron of The Royal Society of St George.

ELECTRICAL WORK & HEATING CONTROLS
Last month the picture showed the monogram or Royal Cypher for King Edward VIII on the telephone exchange in East Street. The telephone exchange was built in 1936 and it was expected that Edward would succeed his father George V. Edward however abdicated in December and was later to become the Duke of Windsor. Cyphers of Edward VIII on public buildings are therefore relatively rare.

almost any surface – walls, doors, furniture etc. – keeping a wet edge as you work will give you a more even finish. Paint along the difficult edges or mouldings with a brush first, but as you go, try to roller up to the brush line before the paint has started to dry. This will prevent patchiness caused by two layers of paint building up from the brush and roller
