Welcome

Welcome to the November issue of Seaford Scene. How are you all coping with these colder days and dark evenings? We mustn’t complain, the summer was a glorious one in the end, so onwards towards winter! This month we have news from Seahaven Storehouse, the charity that was set up almost a year ago, to help families in crisis, see page 18. There’s an exciting exhibition of prints by one of Seaford’s finest artists, Eric Slater, at The Crypt Gallery, Church Road. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of his death, see page 28. Seaford Choral Society have their winter concert at the end of the month, details on page 51 and we have a sneak preview of the dates when Father Christmas will be arriving in Seaford with the Rotary Club of Seaford. Take care with fireworks this month and enjoy!

ROTARY CLUB OF SEAFORD Sleigh Routes for December 2013 We are only one month away from our annual marathon, Santa’s Christmas Collections. To give readers a preview, below are the routes for the first week of December. Santa sets off at 6.30pm each weekday evening and aims to fly off to Lapland for the night by 8.30pm. Next month’s edition of Seaford Scene will have all the routes for the rest of December.

Monday 2nd December: Ash Drive, Stirling Avenue, Chyngton Gardens, Farm Close, Manor Road North Tuesday 3rd: Hazeldene, Manor Road South, Kingston Estate, Fairways Estate Wednesday 4th: Rother Road, Links Road, Arundel Road, Cuckmere Road, Lullington Close, Chyngton Way, South Way Thursday 5th: Wilkinson Way, Kedale Road, Grosvenor Road, Salisbury Road, Chichester Road, Grove Road, Stafford Rd. Friday 6th: Late Night Shopping then St Crispians, Lexden Road (bottom), Upper Sherwood Road, Quarry Lane, Valley Drive Saturday 7th: Morning 10am – 1pm Static, Broad Street Now for a short fairy story... Father Christmas is concerned. No, it’s worse than that. Santa is worried. Having helped the Seaford Rotary Club to visit all areas of the town with its Christmas Sleigh of Goodwill for well over fifty years, the garage where the sleigh and towing vehicle are kept is likely to be demolished shortly. Santa has said there is no need to worry just yet as he and his elves have been working hard to make sure everything will be ready for this Christmas. Santa has been saving lots of pennies to allow the Club to purchase suitable garaging to last, hopefully, for the next fifty years. So far the search has not been successful, partly because the height of the sleigh means it will not fit into most existing garages and a small piece of land on which the Club could build may be a better option. Santa will not sleep easily until the problem is solved. Footnote. Unfortunately it’s not a fairy story and Rotarian Jim Anderson would be pleased to hear from

6

anyone who may be able to help the Club find either existing garaging or a suitable site. He can be contacted on 01323 492846 or at jha38@sky. com. Please also be assured that the cost of finding a permanent home for the sleigh will be met from a legacy kindly left to the Club and not from contributions to our Christmas collections, all of which are used to support good causes locally.

The Backpack Project

“Mary’s Meals” is a UK-based charity which was started in 2002 with a view to providing one daily meal in a place of education in developing countries. The objective is to attract chronically poor children into a classroom where they can gain an education which can be their ladder out of poverty. From a start of feeding 200 children in Malawi, the charity now provides meals for 750,000 children every day in 16 different countries. The cost is just £10.70 per child for a year. Following the success of the meals project, the charity identified another obstacle which prevented poor families sending their children to school. The parents are so poor that they cannot afford to buy basic things needed for school. The charity therefore started a scheme called the Backpack Project where schools, churches, colleges and other groups fill an old school bag or backpack with some everyday things which children need for school. Suitable items (which do not need to be new) include backpack/ schoolbag, exercise book/notepad, pencils/pens/crayons, eraser, ruler, pencil sharpener, pencil case, small towel, shorts, skirt, T-shirt, sandals, flip flops, small ball, spoon, toothbrush, toothpaste. The Rotary Club of Seaford, working with Seaford Primary School, started to look at providing a number of filled bags that can be sent to deprived children throughout the world. The School contacted their children’s parents, and the response was staggering. Several packing sessions started, kicking off the plan which we hope will be replicated at other schools both locally and nationally. Photos: Santa and his sleigh (top), children packing bags with Rotary Club of Seaford President Michael Logan (bottom).

Happy Birthday Archway!! The Archway is the brainchild of Jane Reeves, an established performer and music tutor. It’s life began in the old gym on Blatchington Road. The first step was a complete refurbishment of the property and by November 2009 the Archway was ready and the singing began. The first rehearsal of the Contemporary Choir had just 15 trail blazers (most of whom are still members!). This choir started gently with Amazing Grace but now covers everything from Ellington to Supertramp! The Gospelish Choir started in January 2010. This choir is slightly more challenging and covers music with a gospel and soul influence. Both choirs have been growing steadily over the last four years and the Archway now has five choirs, three in Seaford and two in Eastbourne with 200 members attending every week. None of the choirs require an audition! In 2011 the Archway was honoured to receive the Seaford Mayor’s Award for Community Service. Jane also teaches singing workshops at the Archway for anyone wanting to improve their vocal range – details of these are on their website. The choirs perform regularly

raising money for local charities and have been a part of the very successful Seaford Live for the past 3 years. With the expansion of the business came Archway Events. Not only do they put on performances with the choirs across Sussex but they also collaborate with local performers to bring quality events to Seaford and beyond. So far this year Archway Events has hosted two balls with the amazing Swing Street Orchestra and two live music concerts with the Seaford All Stars. November sees a live music event for children from Al Start in association with the Family Arts Festival and the Big Draw. December sees the biggest event so far on the Archway Events calendar with a live music party to end all on New Years Eve! This is what Archway Events has planned for the near future: November 2nd 2013 – Al Start and Gorrid the Horrid at Chyngton School. December 6th 2013 – All choirs will be performing at Late Night Shopping in Seaford. December 13th 2013 – The Seaford Choirs perform at Seaford Head School. December 14th 2013 – The Eastbourne Choirs perform at the Underground Theatre, Eastbourne There are many more events going on at the Archway take a look at their website www.thearchwaygroup. com or call 01323 897590 to be part of it.

7.30 Fri 8 November ARGO (cert 15) Ben Affleck plays Tony Mendez a charismatic and imaginative CIA agent who has to rescue six Americans from Tehran during the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979. Winner of three Oscars including best picture. THE INSIDE STORY The real life exploits of a CIA agent in Tehran are the subject of our first selection in November. Ben Affleck directed this satirical take on the story of Tony Mendez who in 1979 engineered the disappearance of six American officials from under the noses of a mob just before the US embassy in Tehran was overrun. While they hid in the Canadian ambassador’s residence, Mendez devised a plan to get them home. The plan was pure Hollywood, and involved Hollywood in an adventure worthy of.... well, making into a film! WIN TICKETS Water was filmed in two languages with a bi-lingual cast. What were the languages? We have two pairs of tickets to give away this month. To enter the draw please visit our website: www.seafordcinema.org/competition.

7.30 Fri 22 November WATER (cert PG) In this subtle and beautiful film, the third of the feminist Elements trilogy by Deepa Mheta, eight-year-old Chuyia is widowed. Incarcerated in an ashram for widows she is expected to atone for her bad karma through religious service but questions her plight and that of her friend, the beautiful Kalyani (Lisa Ray) who is pimped to support the ashram. A ray of hope is cast when Kalyani is courted by a young man, but tragedy ensues. Though quiet and reflective on the surface, this is a stealthy attack on a religion that treats women as second-class citizens. Though set in 1938 the viewer is bound to ask; how much has changed? Film programme, tickets and membership are all available at www.seafordcinema.org, Seaford Tourist Centre and on the door. Seaford Community Cinema is a not-for profit organisation run by volunteers. You’ll find a warm welcome at our screenings, held at the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’

Newsletter Autumn 2013

Welcome to our Autumn 2013 Newsletter, which we hope you will find useful and informative, and which opens this time with a short section outlining recent developments.

Subscriptions can now be renewed for 2014, and a Membership Form is printed at the end of the Newsletter. The fees remain the same for another year, i.e £3 per household, but just £2 for a senior citizen.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

We urge all existing members to renew and to requote your email address if you wish to continue receiving the email updates throughout the year. (Please write this as clearly as possible, as some have been very hard to decipher in the past. Also please note the Treasurer has new contact details.) The main Benefits of Membership are as follows:

We held our 2013 AGM in March, but this time on a weekday evening rather than a Saturday morning. The meeting was well attended and deemed more convenient than the previous arrangements, so will be repeated for 2014. We had a stall at Seaford Fun Day in July and handed out advice and literature to passers-by. We also enrolled a few new members and a new Deliverer in the St Peters Park area, which is good news and will help us increase our coverage further. SAS Security Ltd have kindly offered to fit basic home security systems to two needy NHW members free of charge. One nomination has been agreed with them, and at the time of writing, the system is about to be installed. The second nomination will be made in the new year. We are very grateful to SAS Security Ltd for this gesture of goodwill. Following the inaugural Deliverers Meeting last year, this will be a regular event and this year’s will be held on Wednesday 30th October at 7:30pm at St Leonards Church Hall. It is an informal meeting to which all Deliverers and Co-ordinators and their partners are invited to attend and is an opportunity for you to meet the Committee and also give input into our activities and policy. We will have a short address from the Chairman and an update from the Treasurer, followed by a guest speaker and then an informal question and answer session with light refreshments.

SUBSCRIPTIONS/MEMBERSHIP

We currently have just under 1100 members for 2013, which is a fantastic figure when compared to less than 200 a few years ago. It has been a steady but rewarding slog to increase membership numbers so far and we are looking to increase even further for 2014.

14

• Your local area can be monitored by a Road Co-ordinator, leading to lower crime rates. • By supplying an email address, you will receive regular emails from NHW which will include Police news and updates of local information. • 4 Newsletters published per year. • Improved local relations and a sense of Community Spirit. • Peace of mind that neighbours, even if you don’t know them, have the same values and also wish to see a crime-free area. • A channel to report suspicious issues to the local Police and to receive information back from them. • Reduction in Premiums on Home and Contents Insurance from most insurance companies.

LOCAL CRIME / POLICE UPDATE

We receive regular updates and information from Sgt Stuart Mullins and where pertinent to NHW, we pass these on to our email members. The overall message from him is that crime and anti-social behaviour in Seaford is falling, but the crimes and burglaries and thefts etc that are occurring appear to be opportunist and, apart from one topic, are not part of organised crime. This is good news for the town, but it does mean that sensible precautions are needed to prevent opportunist situations arising. This simply means being vigilant in basic security measures, i.e. keep doors and windows secure, especially if you are out in the rear garden etc; keep valuables

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’

Newsletter Autumn 2013

such as computers, cameras and phones away from windows and out of sight; lock away garden equipment and tools when not in use; keep car doors locked and windows shut when parked on your drive and on the road outside your home; keep belongings stowed in the boot or glove compartment, rather than left on view in your car. These are all common sense issues, but will greatly reduce your chances of being a target. The issue of most concern to us is that of Distraction Thefts at local supermarkets, where elderly people are being targeted. What appears to happen is that an individual or a pair of “hangers about” watch a person enter their PIN at the checkout, memorise it, then later on confront that person in the car park and create a distraction and then steal their purse or wallet in the ensuing confusion. They immediately go to a cash point and withdraw the maximum amount of cash they can. This has happened in most local towns and one ruse they use is that you have dropped some money on the ground and they try to create an impression of good intentions in handing it back to you. Your guard drops as you try and convince them it is not yours, and this is when they attempt to steal your purse or wallet. We urge everybody to remain on your guard when approached by strangers when you are at the checkout or loading your car etc.

POLICE PANEL MEETINGS

The Police Panel Meetings are open to all residents and one is held in each of the three areas every three months. The next meetings are as follows: West Panel: 30th October 2013, 7pm at Bishopstone Village Hall. East Panel: 20th November 2013, 7:30pm at St Lukes Church Hall, Walmer Road. Central Panel: 4th December 2013, 6pm at Council Offices, 37 Church Street. Times and venues are also displayed at the Police Station, 37 Church Street, and on the Police website

www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments.

STAFF VACANCIES

We are urgently in need of a volunteer to fill the role of Publicity Officer. This would involve, as an example, the writing and co-ordination of the printing and distribution of this Newsletter, so if you are able to spare some time and help us in this worthwhile cause, we would be very pleased to hear from you. The role may appeal equally to a recently retired person, or a younger person looking to increase their experience.

CALL FOR SPEED GUN VOLUNTEERS

The Police have stepped up their employment of Speed Indication Devices in an effort to promote safer driving around the town, and are looking for new volunteers to boost the teams. If you would like to put yourself forward for a short training session and to assist in deploying the equipment occasionally, PSCO’s Cathy Gilling or Noel Daniels would be very pleased to hear from you, either by email or leaving a message at the Police Desk. Their contact details are catherine.gilling@sussex.pnn. police.uk or noel.daniels.01@sussex.pnn.police.uk

SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE: The First Nine Months In December 2012, Dawn Woodgate began to explore ways of fulfilling her heart’s desire to help families in financial crisis situations, by providing food parcels. Dawn is a member of Seaford Community Church, based at Kingswell, 115 – 117 Vale Road, Seaford, who can be contacted by telephone on 07921 844930, or by e-mail on seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com. During the Christmas period of 2012 Dawn was able to supply ten basic food parcels, designed to meet the needs of an individual or family for three days, and six Christmas Hampers that contained some seasonal extras. Several of these families would otherwise have been without basic food needs for Christmas. Since this beginning, with advice and guidance from Social Services and other official agencies, together

with support from the Baptist Church, Roman Catholic Church, WAVES, local schools (who ran a “bring a can day”), Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s (who both gave support through vouchers) the scheme has increased significantly, with many families benefiting. Morrison’s have also agreed to allow space near their checkout tills for a permanent Seahaven Storehouse Collection Box, and allowed volunteers to promote the scheme on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July, when 512 Kg’s of food was generously donated by the general public. We would like to offer a huge vote of thanks to everyone who has contributed food, time, money, support and advice. The Storehouse itself is based at Seaford Community Church, where a specific storeroom has been allocated and fitted out with appropriate shelving and furniture within the church facilities. The Storehouse is open every Thursday morning, between 10am and 1pm when a small team of volunteers receive and record donations made, sort out the many categories of food donated, and make up food parcels of varying sizes dependent on the size of family needing help during their crisis. Tea and coffee, together with toast and biscuits are made available to visitors during this period. In the three months between March and May 2013, approximately 2,028 kgs of food was donated, and 78 food parcels were handed out to families in crisis, which totalled 1,490.7 kgs. In the following three months, June to August 2013, we received 2679 kgs in food donations, and were able to supply 111 food parcels totalling 2171 kgs. Most of the families in crisis have been sent to us from Social Services, unemployment and other official groups. We look forward to the continuing challenge of helping families in need, and to everyone’s support and encouragement in the future weeks and months, especially during the forthcoming Christmas Season, when we would ask people to consider donating some additional seasonal items such as sweets, chocolates, christmas puddings or mince pies, brandy sauce, or other seasonal extras. Thank you all once again for your generous support.

for the Keith Baker Trust, which has continued his charitable work. Hooray! At last! We’ve been writing about it for months and at last it’s open for lessons. By the time you read this local MP and Minister of State for the Home Office, Norman Baker, will have done the honours and cut the ribbon. The front is adorned with a handsome plaque naming it in honour of the Keith Baker Charitable Will Trust 2007 to mark the very generous donation we received from the Trust, which enabled us to purchase the building. Seaford man Keith Baker was born in the town in 1941, was educated at Lewes Grammar School and then went to University College, London from where he graduated with a physics degree. He trained as a weather forecaster, spent some time working in the Middle East, then became a physics teacher at Hastings Grammar School, retiring from teaching in the 1990s. Keith Baker was also a highly successful investor and during his lifetime and devoted some of his financial resources to supporting a number of charities. After his death in 2007 the remaining capital was used to lay the foundations

One of the aims of Seaford Community

Garden is to offer everyone the opportunity to learn new skills while working on something positive for their community – as well as enjoying all the physical, mental and emotional benefits of gardening. The classroom will enable the garden to offer a more formal educational component to the project with workshops and short courses run by volunteers, as well as providing a place to display information, so if anyone has any ideas on aspects of horticulture that they would like to learn more about, please let us know. Thanks to the wonderful Indian summer we had so much produce that we were able to keep the garden open on Saturday mornings until the end of September but have now reverted to Wednesday mornings only opening, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. We have seen a really encouraging increase in visitor numbers over the summer and hope very much that you will continue coming in, not only to buy our produce and plants but just to enjoy the garden as we do. For the last month or so volunteers have been busy planting up daffodil, hyacinth and small tulip bulbs for Christmas and the New Year, and planting a few in the flower beds too to add early spring brightness and colour. And the poly tunnel is full of plants bought as plugs and being grown on for sale and our own use, including lavenders and pansies. Now that the classroom is complete – much of the spring and summer was spent building it from kit form and painting it an attractive blue and cream – we can go back to reorganising the garden, deciding what should go into the flower and veg beds next year, and when we should make a start on an alpine area to give people an idea of what can be planted in a small space, and how to do it. You’ve been telling us how much you like the colour we introduced in 2013, but we think next year will be an absolute riot, and Diana, Dave and Mike are already making lists of seeds to sow. Watch this space... The Garden Team

Eric Slater: The Return On the 50th anniversary of his death, a chance to enjoy Seaford’s finest artist at the Crypt gallery on November 8th & 9th. He’s had an exhibition at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne, he’s the subject of a new book called Slater’s Sussex and he’s starred on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. Now, at last, some of Eric Slater’s beautiful colour woodcuts can be seen in the town where he spent most of his life and where he produced his best work. Eric Slater moved to East Albany Road in Seaford in 1929 and lived there until his death in 1963, making over 40 evocative prints of the landscape around him. More than a dozen of his prints will be on show at the Crypt – mostly recognisable local scenes. Greetings cards and Slater’s Sussex will be on sale at reduced prices and high quality giclées of two of his classic images, Rough Sea and The Coastguard Station, will be available. Various owners have loaned their pictures including Seaford resident Jean Johnson who appeared on the Antiques Roadshow in September. Jean’s uncle left her a print called Morning Calm which expert Dendy Easton described as “absolutely lovely” and valued at between £300 and £400. The author of Slater’s Sussex, James Trollope, will be giving a talk at 7pm on the Saturday (Nov 9th). “It’s great that his prints will be on view in his home town,” said James. “He’s no longer a forgotten artist as more and more people are appreciating his talent.” For tickets for James Trollope’s talk contact Brian Millar on brianpmillar@gmail.com Tel: 01323-899202 Thinking of any planning work? SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB – PROMS NIGHT 2013 The tenth annual Proms Concert organised by Seaford Martello Rotary Club took place at Seaford Head Community College on Sat 5th October. Seaford Silver Band, conducted by Lewis Delivett, performed along with guest singer Rebecca Swingle Putland, oboist Barbara Ashby, and violinist Maeve Jenkinson. Barbara had stepped in at the very last minute as Rebecca was unable to sing during the first half of the concert. Moira House Junior Choir, conducted by Martin Neil and accompanied by Robert Cousins, sang several numbers and as usual everyone joined in the rousing finale, singing all the old favourites such as Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Sussex by the Sea.

superb playing. Barbara Ashby, an oboist, kept us enthralled, Maeve Jenkinson entranced and delighted the audience playing Meditation from Thais – her violin sang out touching us all – and Moira House Junior Choir conducted by Martin Neil had us chuckling with their rendition of When Maiden Loves. Rebecca Swingle Putland, despite recovering from a cold, gave the audience a lively rendition of Can’t Help Loving That Man, and led the audience singing a medley of Proms faithfuls and a rousing Sussex by the Sea. My thanks go to Clive Rimell and Dave Winsor for organising this wonderful Community event. All the money raised from this concert will be going towards supporting good causes locally, nationally and internationally.

Joining in the fun were Councillor Anthony White, the Mayor of Seaford, together with the Mayoress, and Mr Norman Baker MP. The Club were also very pleased to welcome Lord Healey and his daughter to the performance. Club President Janice Vince said, “ All enjoyed a fabulous night at the Seaford Martello Proms, which just seems to be getting better and better. In our tenth year we had a new conductor, and Lewis Delivett and the Seaford Silver Band set the tone of the evening with some

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Songs from Country greats such as Patsy Cline and Glen Campbell lined up alongside those by modern stars such as Shania Twain and Little Big Town. Line dancing demonstrations by the cast kept the audience enthralled but the highlight of the evening was a surprise “flash mob” of the performers’ mums who had been secretly learning a line dance from YouTube clips filmed by SMTJ Director, Paula Woolven.

SEAFORD FUNDRAISERS Plumbing & Heating LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS George Ward AND FUNDRAISERS Established for 30 years Seaford Volunteer Fundraising Committee is appealing for new members and fundraisers to help support the work of Cancer Research UK. After beginning their fundraising in 1959, the committee have since raised more than £300,000 to help fund CRUK’s vital research. Clare Barnes, Chair of Seaford Volunteer Fundraising Committee, said, “I would like to appeal to people from across Sussex to volunteer their time and join the Seaford Volunteer Fundraising Committee or simply just do some fundraising to raise funds to support the life saving work of Cancer Research UK. This type of fundraising is rewarding in so many ways. It is sociable and a great way to meet new people. Furthermore, our fundraising efforts contribute directly to helping Cancer Research UK scientists continue their research into the prevention and treatment of cancer. If you wish to be part of the team we would love to hear from you – please do get in touch on 07500 104630.”

Survival rates for cancer have doubled in the last 40 years. But one in three people will still get cancer at some point during their lifetime. Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive. Every year, around 8,600 people are diagnosed with cancer in Sussex and sadly every year, around half of those people die. That’s 4,500 lives that cancer takes every year here in Sussex alone.

Benita Wright, Cancer Research UK’s Local Fundraising Manager for East Sussex, said, “I would like to thank Seaford Volunteer Fundraising Committee for the fantastic amount they have raised and the massive contribution they have made to our vital work over the past 54 years.

Often, it’s not because they can’t get the drugs they need, but because their successful treatment stops working. Cancer Research UK is funding a group of scientists at the University of Sussex to find ways to overcome that resistance, giving many more people a better chance of beating the disease.

“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research. Therefore we need your support to help fund our work. If you wish to fundraise please register for a fundraising pack by calling our supporter services team 0300 123 1022.”

Last year, Cancer Research UK spent more than £1 million on research in Brighton but we can’t stop there.

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to research into the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer and is the largest single funder of cancer research in the UK. The charity supports research in all aspects of the disease through the work of more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK who have contributed to 19 of the top 20 drugs used to treat cancer patients worldwide today.

If you would like to get involved and make a difference, you can apply to join the committee via the Cancer Research UK website: http://support.cancerresearchuk. org/support-us/volunteer/fundraising-group-memberseaford or get in touch to find out about other volunteering opportunities. For further information about Cancer Research UK’s work or to find out how to support the charity, please call 08701 60 20 40 or visit cruk.org Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Seaford Kurlers Hello everyone. Hope you all enjoyed our lovely sunshine and partial Indian summer this year. It really was beautiful. Hopefully Autumn will give us a splendid display. I am writing this in September, so to me it is still to come. Hopefully by the time you read this, Seaford Kurlers will have completed the annual in-house tournament. We will also have had our 2013 AGM and will know the winner of this year’s Bob Matthews Achievement Cup. A few of our members have asked about the origins of the game of New Age Kurling. I thought it would be good idea to let all our readers also know about this. Briefly, in 2000 John Bennett was asked by his severely disabled son to think of a game that could be played by people with any type of disability yet still play on equal terms with anyone. It was while watching the World Curling Championships in 2000, that he had an idea for a game based on curling. He experimented with many types of aids and equipment before settling on the game as we play it today. It is now used for all types of physical rehabilitation in hospitals. The game does not require any degree of physical fitness yet exercises muscles that are not usually used. I personally believe that it would be an ideal game for schools to adopt in their games curriculum. Most schools have pupils with differing types and degrees of disabilities. These pupils are often unable to play the usual sports/games with their peers. If anyone reading this is involved in the education world, maybe they could suggest it. Seaford Kurlers is itself affiliated to ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). We are therefore a club of members with varying levels of abilities. We are all able to play the game equally with each other. We meet at the Downs Leisure Centre every Tuesday at 2pm until 4pm with a break about half way. Your first visit is free, after that there is a fee of £2.50 per visit. We have an annual membership fee of £5 payable every January or when you join. and

Morceau de Concours by David Parton & Charlotte Tayler The Synergy Theatre Company – last seen “fa-lala-ing” round The Crouch Gardens with a selection of Shakespearean duologues and duets as part of SeafordLIVE! 2013 – is delighted to be returning to The Clinton Centre with the first Studio production of their 2013/2014 Season, a double-bill comprising “A Lady of Letters” from Alan Bennett’s glorious Talking Heads series and Morceau de Concours, a short play for girls about bullying in a boarding school, by David Parton & Charlotte Tayler.

“A Lady of Letters” is the story of Irene Ruddock, a lonely woman who finds pleasure in observing the lives of the people in her neighbourhood. Such is Irene’s interest in the world around her that she writes to her local MP, the police, even to Social Services to complain about the treatment of her neighbour’s children… Eventually, Irene finds herself serving a prison sentence for harassment and finally finds the order and calm she craves in her regimented life behind bars. In Morceau de Concours, we meet Connie Chan, a precociously gifted teenager from Macau, who has been enrolled in a girls’ boarding school somewhere in the Home Counties, while her parents travel the world for their work. The established clique – all intelligent, privileged young ladies – resent this intrusion into their carefully-calibrated lives. The bullying starts with the little things – comments, muttered remarks, teasing – and, quicker than they could imagine, escalates into something that none of them could have predicted… We are proud to welcome some of Seaford’s most talented actresses, young and young-at-heart, to our stage. David Parton directs Sue Shephard in the role of Irene in ‘A Lady of Letters’, while Charlotte Tayler directs the young cast of Morceau de Concours, with Daisy Milner (this summer’s Juliet in Romeo and Juliet), Leah Beardmore-Alonso, Kimberley Payne (most recently seen as Anne in The Diary of Anne Frank), Madeleine Hatt, Abigail Cobby, Janet Lalla-Hambtin, Ellen Williams and, as Connie Chan, Aruna Murishwar.

Thursday 21st – Saturday 23rd November 2013 7.30pm, The Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford. Tickets (£10/£8) from 01273 301444 or www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk

Cottage and Contemporary Decorators

TOP TIPS – no. 1 If you are painting the skirting boards with the carpet in place…

… Rub down carefully and hoover up the dust.

Tape the carpet edges with 40mm masking tape, overlapping the skirting board by about 10mm. Using a flexible plastic edge – old membership cards are great for this – tuck the tape between the carpet edge and skirting board and you can now paint safely. Remove the tape after a day or so but before the paint has had time to fully harden or you will tear the paint as you do so

Sedici says “goodbye” to Jill and “hello” to Clare Jill Benison, who opened up Sedici in Church Street, Seaford, 20 years ago, has decided to retire and has handed over the reigns to Clare Ireland. Jill explained, “I would never have dreamt that walking past a little shop in Seaford 20 years ago and seeing a ‘closing down’ notice would lead me to opening Sedici but it did, and I have loved every single moment of being there and meeting so many interesting, lovely people. “I can honestly say that for me, being in the shop was always a pleasure, which I know is the result of having such wonderful staff, most of whom had been with me for many many years and of course getting to know my customers (many of whom I think of as my friends). I am missing all this but am very happy that Clare has taken over the shop and some of my staff. I sincerely hope she will have as much pleasure and success that Sedici has given me.” Clare (above right) explained “For my part I would just like to say how very happy and excited I am to have taken on such a fabulous business, built up by Jill over the last 20 years, and I sincerely hope I can do it and her justice. I was a Sedici customer who would come from Brighton and happened to find out from Jill about her decision to retire just days before being made redundant – again! So it felt like it was meant to be! My background is quite varied having lived in Italy for 20 years where I trained as an art restorer and ended up working in the music industry! Music followed me back to the UK but the digital age meant a number of redundancies from that industry so for the past three-and-a-half years I have been running a gift shop in Lewes. I aim to try and keep hold of the brands Sedici’s customers like and there may well be a few new entries!”

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

The Society is now well into rehearsals for the November 30th concert in St Leonard’s Church, Seaford. We are performing two works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: “The Mass in C, K317” (Coronation Mass) and “Vesperae Solennes de Confessore KV 339” (Solemn Vespers of the Saints), and “Five Mystical Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Both the Mozart pieces were composed in Salzburg in 1779 when the composer was aged 23 and, like the Vaughan Williams piece, contain a well-known movement, even though the remainder of each work is perhaps not so well known.

The Coronation Mass acquired its title when some years after it was written, it became the preferred music for royal and imperial occasions. The first documented performance was for the coronation of Leopold 11 of Bohemia in Prague in 1791. This is one of 17 settings of the Ordinary Mass composed by Mozart. The Solemn Vespers was written for Salzburg Cathedral. Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the Five Mystical Songs between 1906 and 1911. He set to music four poems written by George Herbert in 1633. One of the poems, Easter, forms two of the songs. This work was first performed in Worcester Cathedral on September 14th 1911 during that year’s Three Choirs Festival. All the works will be accompanied by The Exceat Players with Nick Houghton, conducted by the Choir’s Director of Music, Sion Parry. The concert on November 30th will be held at St Leonard’s Church. ORIENTAL ART

There is a small group of local people who meet regularly to explore the art of Chinese Brush Painting.

Wood-2-Toys This art form is growing in popularity due to the apparent simple and elegant style. Pablo Picasso was influenced by Chinese brushwork as seen in some of his bullfighting pictures, where simple brushstrokes illustrate movement and emotion. Chinese ink and water colours are used with a variety of papers and Chinese brushes held in a particular way. This ancient art form uses natural subjects: flowers, animals, people and landscapes. If you would like to come along to try this subject we are a friendly group and will warmly welcome you. Please phone: 07986 800730

All handcrafted toys and clocks designed and made locally Please

Who’s Who Stacey Anne In Seaford? Mark Glassman Artist

My name is Mark Glassman and I have lived in Bishopstone, Seaford for nine years, having moved here from London with my partner. I love the landscape, the shingle beach and being close to the sea, which has been an on-going inspiration to me as an artist. My work as a painter and photographer are intertwined, reflecting my fascination with expressive colour and transformation of form. Seeing the ferry come in and leave Newhaven is still a joy. Tide Mills is a constant fascination and the Martello Tower in Seaford with it’s quirky little museum is great. The house I live in has an amazing garden created by my partner and my studio sits at the bottom of it. We have a lovely little Jack Russell dog called Albert who we got from Battersea Dogs Home, who goes crazy when anyone arrives or leaves the house and a tortoise called Hector who has his own mini garden and house. I am reading a book on Henry Moore and Francis Bacon at the moment, which has been written to coincide with a fascinating exhibition in Oxford, but love reading fiction also. Music is essential and I always have music on loud when I paint, anything from Nick Cave and Dusty Springfield to the Smiths and a thousand things in between. I love the cinema and think it’s great that more local cinemas are popping up now in Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes. Hitchcock and David Lynch are possibly my two favourite directors, but it’s impossible for me to say what my favourite film is really, though Blue Velvet and The Birds would be in my top ten.

Clock Restoration Service

The Friends of Tide Mills completed its September meeting, where 17 of us managed to collect just eight sacks of rubbish – this illustrates just how clear the area is at present and of course long may it continue! As previously reported, over the last few meetings we have started to see a general reduction in litter which is testament to everybody who helps ensure this beautiful area remains so – brilliant. As part of this meeting we also undertook the annual litter survey under the Marine Conservation Society’s “Adopt a Beach” initiative – an annual event which takes place all around our coast over this weekend. This year we recorded significantly less litter than last year, confirming our feeling that much less litter, for whatever reason, is now being deposited. We will say in our report to the MCS that, while our findings are promising, the fact that many of us are now taking more care of this fantastic site is probably the main reason why we are seeing this trend – man clearly has not just suddenly stopped using the sea as a dustbin. This year we recorded around 65 items of litter over the area we survey and, although a great improvement, still very sad and frustrating – again the main items are commercial fishing related – particularly remnants of trawl net trimmings. We are also very pleased to see the newly installed Dog Bin, very kindly paid for by the South Downs National Park Authority, the emptying of which (by LDC) is being very kindly paid for by the landowners, Newhaven Port Properties. Several of our members also worked hard to conclude this initiative – brilliant!

We can never have enough members and are always very happy to welcome as many more as possible. If, like us, you appreciate just what a beautiful and special place Tide Mills is, please do join us. Our next meeting is Sunday the 17th of November, where we meet from 10am until 12pm, but any time you can spare is much appreciated. “The Palace of Westminster” A Parliament Week talk by Kevin Gordon

This is William Court Gully who was the Speaker of the House of Commons from 1895 to 1905. He lived at Sutton Place in Seaford, which is now part of Newlands School. Gully was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and called to the bar in 1860. He entered Parliament as the MP for Carlisle in 1886 and was to remain the MP for the town until he was raised to the peerage in 1905. When Parliament was sitting he stayed at a house in Buckingham Gate near Victoria Station but moved to Seaford in the 1890s, possibly due to ill health, which was eventually to cause him to resign his position in the House of Commons. On resigning this post he took the peerage, becoming the First Viscount Selby (from his wife’s maiden name). Viscount Selby lived in Seaford until his death in November 1909. ORDER, ORDER! Local historian and Parliamentary Guide, Kevin Gordon will be giving a talk about the history of the Houses of Parliament at the Little Theatre in Steyne Road at 7.30pm on Friday 22nd November. Tickets are £5, which includes refreshments. They are available from the Tourist Information Centre at 37, Church Street (Telephone 01323 897426) Kevin Gordon

Daphne Celebrates her 92nd Birthday at the Blue Room Daphne Church was born 1921 in Portland Place, London. Her father, John, was Chief Booking Officer for all the cinemas across London during World War II. At that time, visits to the cinema were regarded as wonderful, exciting events. Daphne and her family regularly attended premiers sitting in the Queens Box and had the opportunity to meet many famous stars including Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and many more. Daphne’s aunt, Ethel Edwards, starred in many West End Theatre plays including The Importance of Being Earnest. Daphne continued the theatrical theme, training in Tap, Modern Dance and Musical Comedy and spent many happy hours performing on stage. During that time Daphne had the opportunity to work alongside the Tiller Girls and loved watching them in rehearsal. In the 1990’s the Tiller Girls were regarded as the crème de la crème of the dance world, probably most famous for their high-kicking routines. They performed as resident

dancers at the Folies Bergère in Paris, the London Palladium and hundreds of other theatres throughout Europe and the United States and Daphne was thrilled when she was invited to train with them – despite her diminutive size. Daphne’s husband, Inman, came over to England with the New Zealand Navy in 1940 and after a whirlwind romance they married in 1941. Inman went on to become a war hero receiving several medals, including the Arctic Star. Daphne and Inman have been happily married for 72 years and in August this year, Daphne celebrated her 92nd birthday. There are currently five generations spanning the family and The Blue Room are delighted that Daphne and her family frequent the salon. As a special treat they organised a photo shoot for Daphne, her daughter Sandy, granddaughter Emma, great-granddaughter Nicola and camera shy great-great granddaughter Frankie. The Blue Room have since presented Daphne with two framed photographs to remind her of the lovely afternoon. Emma has been going to the Blue Room for several years and on her recommendation Daphne had her consultation with Lucy, took the plunge and had her hair coloured for the first time at the grand age of 90 years and since then has been a regular client of the salon. Daphne is a wonderful, elegant lady and The Blue Room hope to be cutting and colouring her hair for many years to come.

Most people with wisteria in their gardens probably know that it should be pruned twice a year. The first cut is in mid-summer, which is intended to slow down growth and aid the formation of flower buds for next year. The final cut is now in November. Even if you missed the summer prune you should still cut it back now to ensure flowering next year. Tie in the new extension shoots where they are required then prune the rest of the shrub back to that new shoot. Prune any growth that is not required to extend the whole framework to about three inches from the main stem. Prune back to a bud. Wisteria likes to be hard pruned. Too many shoots left untouched will result in overcrowding and reduced flowering. With this regime of pruning a new wisteria should flower within four years otherwise it may not flower until ten years have passed. If in doubt get a good book on pruning or seek specialist advice.

You may bring in manufactured articles or souvenirs made of wood but you must not bring in any pieces of natural or un-manufactured wood. This all sounds rather complicated but I’m sure it’s necessary to protect UK horticulture. If you are unsure the advice is to declare all articles in the “red channel” when you arrive back in the UK. There are severe penalties if you are found to be in possession of any undeclared item. For more details check on www.fera.defra.gov.uk. Mike Parker

here are statutory controls to safeguard plants and plant material coming into the UK. It is therefore wise to check the current rules on the DEFRA website before you travel if you think that you may possibly return with some plants or seeds to remind you of your holiday or trip abroad. If you travel only within the EU you may bring in any plant product, fruit or vegetables grown in the EU provided they are disease free and for your own use. If you return from a country outside the EU then most plant-related items might be banned unless you have obtained a special licence (Phytosanitary Certificate). The main products having a total ban include potatoes (Seed or Tubers) and Sweet Chestnuts. However you may bring into the UK up to a maximum of five retail packets of seeds without the need for a certificate. The allowance for bulbs, corms, tubers or rhizomes is 2 kg from any EU country but none whatsoever from outside the EU. No citrus or vine plants from any source are allowed without the appropriate certificates.

Wash and save any good pots, discard any old pots or split plastic pots and save any cracked or chipped clay pots to break up for crocks. 3Check and clean tools and mowers. Tools should be sharpened and oiled ready for use in the new year. If your lawn mower needs a service, organise it now! 3Winter prune fruit trees or plant new ones if the weather is suitable. Lift and divide rhubarb Crowns but expect a reduced crop for a few years until it becomes re-established. 3Dahlias should now be lifted and stored for the winter. Protect from any chance of frost. 3Complete all winter digging. The winter weather will break down the large clumps of soil. If the sun does come out it could get quite warm so be prepared to open the greenhouse door for a few hours!

Seaford Gardening Club We are well into autumn now, with nature’s free colourful scene about to unfold. According to the weather experts we are in for a treat this year, with a spectacular display. As there is an abundance of berries etc. we may be in for a harsh winter if the old wives’ tale is to be believed! Nature looks after its wildlife in many ways. Our speaker at our September meeting gave an interesting talk on the Flora and Fauna of South East England. Brian Gallop admitted he is not a gardener but a true and dedicated naturalist. There is a wide range of habitat in the south east consisting of chalk, clay and soft sand, to mention a few. Wetland areas are very important, accommodating a wide range of our own species, as well as migrating birds. Dungeness is a very special habitat where the RSPB spend a lot of time studying the birds. Old gravel pits also make useful pools for many birds etc. to live and thrive. The North and South Downs are especially good with a variety of habitat, including woodland areas which are important for all life – even fungi etc. Hedgerows make a useful motorway for birds, insects and small mammals. Plants and flowers grow on our beaches, some of which we humans can consume, such as sea kale. Brian showed us interesting slides of various birds, mammals, insects and wild flowers, but his main love is wild orchids – it is amazing how many species can be found in the south east of England. A very informative talk and we are sure to ask him to return in the future. Our outing season ended in September with a trip to Dorset to see the beautiful and colourful garden at Compton Acres. Anne is now thinking about the 2014 programme!

HOW WILL ALL SEASONS MAKE IT THROUGH THE WINTER?

Garden Clean-ups and Makeovers

Back in April we shared a feature on a new business set up where Ian Smith had left the financial services industry behind to start a unique gardening business. So, how has he been getting on? We will look at how his business has developed in the first year as well as look forward into the autumn and winter to see how All Seasons can help through the whole year.

Property on the Market Service

One-off clearance jobs also undertaken for a fixed price. Selling your property? Abandoning the gardening is the worst thing to do!

Gutter Clearance and Cleaning Including facias and soffits.

Pressure washing of Patios, garden furniture We can do it in a fraction of the time.

Remarkably, Ian already has over forty regular clients with work ranging from simple lawn mowing to general cosmetic work. His aim was always to help his clients make savings by undertaking all gardening work, not just the lawns. So will he continue to take on new clients next year? “I want to be able to improve my service even more next year by bringing in some help. There have been times when there aren’t enough hours in the day. However, it is important that any additional gardeners have the same attention to detail as me as my clients rightly insist on high standards.” Of course, there is also the question of seasonality in this line of business, so what do gardeners do in the cold, winter months? Ian has already come up with a list of services based on feedback from his clients:

Tree/Hedge Trimming and Pruning Keep them looking neat all the year round.

Snow/Ice Clearance

Don’t slip on your path, let us come and clear it for you.

Rubbish Removal – including garden leaves and other garden rubbish Get rid of the debris all through the winter and we will take it away for you.

76

Christmas tree collection, delivery and disposal No needles in your car!

Preparing new ground by double digging Winter is an ideal time to dig over any new beds or borders ready for spring sowing.

Clearing away old crops from edible plots Pick over your edible plot and remove any old, decaying crops.

Plant spring bulbs

November is the best time for this.

Prune roses to prevent wind-rock October – November is a good time.

Winter pruning for Acers, Birches, Vines to avoid bleeding Let our hands go numb, not yours!

“I now have one person who keeps my garden beautiful, repairs sheds, plants bulbs, cleans facias and soffits and more. I have saved a lot of money!” Mrs Connor, Seaford

In September Gillian Sadler came to demonstrate her own take on Showstoppers and apart from one similar title to our June demonstration, she not only gave us different shows but her delightful arrangements perfectly illustrated Phantom of the Opera, Georges Bizet’s Pearl Fishers, Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret and Riverdance. The most laughter came with the sunflowers used for Calendar Girls! All the arrangements were accompanied by appropriate music and were raffled after tea and biscuits. We welcomed several visitors including former members of Rottingdean Flower Club, whom we hope will come to see us again. In November the outgoing Chairman of the Sussex Area of NAFAS, Jean Plaskett, will demonstrate Go with the Flow. For more details telephone Tina on 01323 873162 Visitors are always made welcome.

CHARITY TANDEM SKYDIVE On Saturday 31st August Luella Rolph jumped out a plane at 13,000 feet for Micklefields Nursery!

HILL HOUSE

BED & BREAKFAST

Her eldest daughter Savannah is the nursery assistant at Micklefields Nursery whilst her

younger daughter, Valley attends there. Luella explained, “It’s an amazing nursery that has had many children, some with special needs come through its doors. The fantastic balance they provide for the children with special needs by integrating and bringing on their development in this mainstream nursery only works so well because of the full support by the fantastic staff lead by Keisa.” To improve facilities, the nursery toilets have been updated with ramps fitted, allowing better access the classrooms for the children woth mobility issues. Also two gardens needed to be completely redesigned. The Badgers’ garden has since been completed over the summer holidays but the other garden desperately needed funding. Luella felt that the usual cupcakes baked wasn’t going to be enough and they would need to raise a larger sum of money for this wonderful project. So Luella set about raising sponsorship money for the tandem skydive Her total figure raised was £722, all kindly donated by family, friends and colleagues at Lewes Police Headquarters which will enable work to start on the second garden project and the Hedgehogs’ classroom. Both Luella and her partner Anthony White, Mayor of Seaford, have their own charities that they raise money for such as Waifs and Strays Dog Rescue and Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group however this one fund raising challenge was just part of being Valley’s mum!

Country at The barn Review 11th – 14th September 2013 A thigh-slapping, toe-tapping show was put on by Seaford Musical Theatre at the Barn Theatre in September. This time the theme was country music and although I’m not a huge fan of this style of music I was pleasantly surprised and was soon humming along. Performed in the style of a live radio show from WSM 650AM an American radio station that continues to broadcast today, well-known country and western songs were performed by the cast who introduced themselves as the famous voices behind the songs – Patsy Cline, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and Jonny Cash to name a few. The show opened with a lively number with all the cast in colourful country and western outfits, cowboy hats and boots, accompanied by the band, who were also set up on stage – nice to see the musicians for a change as normally they are hiding in the orchestra pit! From the very start the audience didn’t hesitate to clap along and join in with the songs. Helena Ng gave an excellent performance of Kitty Wells’ “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels’ whilst Jenny Humphries gave a confident and moving rendition of “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. “Snowbird” originally performed by Lynne Anderson was sung beautifully by Jilly Dew. The second act I found more enjoyable, probably because I remembered many of the songs that were sung such as “The Most Beautiful Girl” by Charlie Rich, performed by Steve Llewellyn, “Stand by Your Man” sung by Cherry Newby, the original version by Tammy Wynette, and not forgetting Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, sung confidently by Helena Ng. Julie Terry brought the solo performances to a close with an excellent rendition of Martina Mcbride’s “Wild Angels”. The show finished on high with line dancing and all the cast on stage singing a medley of songs including “Achy Breaky Heart”and “Cotton Eyed Joe”. A very enjoyable show that included a wide range of well-known country songs performed by an enthusiastic cast. Congratulations to co-directors Shar Turnbull and Tony Still for putting on a brilliant and entertaining production, and the band who were super. Fran Tegg

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH ANGER The ability to get angry is natural. It is part of the ancient fight or flight survival mechanism, which evolved to help our long-distant ancestors survive when, faced with attack from wild animals or invading tribes, they either had to stand up for themselves or flee. The pulse races, adrenalin surges, breath gets fast and shallow, blood surges into the muscles of the legs and arms and the body gets flooded with stress hormones, all so that we are ready to take action if we decide to act aggressively to ward off something or someone. Once action has been taken, the feelings subside. But, today, there are far fewer occasions when threat is as real and physical as just described. If we get frustrated or feel angry with the boss, we may have to keep those feelings to ourselves, which leaves them circulating with no obvious way of being discharged. Or we may become more and more wound up by little annoyances that build up over the day until we reach a point when, over something seemingly trifling, we snap. There are many other circumstances that can lead us to have lower tolerance for irritations – for instance, overtiredness, feeling ill or hungry, hormonal changes, chronic pain or addictive cravings. Sometimes people have a tendency towards anger because of chronic low self-esteem, which usually stems from abuse or neglect during childhood. As adults, they may never feel good or worthy enough and tend to lash out if they perceive themselves as slighted in any way. Mild brain damage can cause a loss of impulse control and aggression.

More often than is realised, aggression is triggered by fear and sometimes it is a longforgotten fear. For instance, a man who, as a child, was locked in a tiny dark space under the stairs as a punishment, may lash out, seemingly inexplicably, at his wife when she wants him to check the space under their stairs for damp. This is because an alarm system in our brain, called the amygdala, accesses our emotional memories and, on the basis of previous experience, alerts us to anything that may represent a risk. Because the stair cupboard experience was so traumatic and frightening, it stays live, causing the man to experience terror all over again, usually without knowing why. Sometimes, too, repeated and seemingly inexplicable anger outbursts stem from pattern matching to a shocking situation in childhood, when anger was felt but, at the time, suppressed. Fortunately, people can be helped to deal with their anger, whatever its cause. Human givens practitioners will show people how to calm themselves down quickly (this is essential, as high emotional arousal makes us stupid, stopping us from listening to reason); encourage them to take exercise (doing enjoyable physical activity is a great way to discharge accumulated stress); and help them to examine and change their self-talk – having hostile thoughts only harms us – and to look at situations from other people’s perspectives as well as their own. Simple, effective techniques can be used to resolve anger outbursts arising from incidents in the past, so that these cease to occur in the future. Finally, Human Givens practitioners will help people explore what needs are not being met in their lives, which may be fuelling anger – for instance, a lack of a sense of achievement or status or control or connection with others may cause feelings of inferiority and hostility. Experiencing uncontrollable or excessive anger always means that something is not working well in a person’s life. No one is naturally an angry person; they are just, temporarily, overcome by anger and can learn how to cease to be its victim. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287

Treatment works by improving circulation to support better oxygenation and drainage of the tissues and muscles of the face. The micro-trauma effect of the needles encourages the production of collagen, the protein that helps keeps skin youthful and elastic. Treatment engages the healthy working of digestive, respiratory and hormonal systems, all intrinsic to the quality of surface tissues. Facial rejuvenation is appropriate for men and women. It relies on personal diagnosis and forms part of a comprehensive well-being programme. Treatments take approximately 1 hour. Free introductory consultation.

SEAFORD BOWLING CLUB All too soon we’ve come to the end of our outdoor bowling season and luckily good weather meant we all enjoyed our Closing Drive at the end of September, the winning team being awarded our Centenary Cup.

The captains, Sandra Perring and Martin Graham-Hyde, were unanimous in choosing The Horder Centre of Crowborough as their charity for this year. They have both had first-hand experience of Horder Healthcare, the charity that runs the Centre. Sandra had a knee operation earlier in the year and Martin’s wife, Liz, has undergone two knee replacements. As several members of the club have benefitted from treatment by the orthopaedic centre of excellence the captains decided it would be a good idea to adopt them as our annual charity. Will Thomas of the Horder Centre came along for the afternoon and received a cheque from Sandra on behalf of Seaford Bowling Club for £600, money raised from various drives and donations during the season (above). A fish and chip supper enjoyed by everyone rounded off a very successful and happy day. Ro O’Keefe

INNER WHEEL OF SEAFORD On Monday Ann Fenwick (last year’s President) was delighted to hand over to Cathy Finch a cheque for the Waves charity, which offers practical help to local families (below). In addition in the past year Inner Wheel has supported Chestnut Tree House, St Wilfrid’s Hospice, McMillan Nurses, Mustard Seed, Mary’s Meals and the Air Ambulance. Whilst Seaford Inner Wheel is enthusiastically helping where there is a need, its success is possible because of the strong bond of friendship between its members and the sense of fun that it generates. For instance on the last night of the national conference all of the Seaford group dressed as sailors except for one who appeared as a pirate. That caused a lot of amusement and teasing within the club and at a recent meeting Pat Allen handed the swashbuckling Maggie Gentry a pirate doll as a permanent reminder of her escapade! (right).

Running Commentary... The difference between the ability to run and the desire to run is huge, and difficult to fully understand. A simple analogy might be to liken it to a floating iceberg. The small part that is seen above the water could be compared with the visible reasons for taking up running, such as to get fit or to keep fit; to raise funds for a good cause, for the social benefits or for the feeling of wellbeing. The large part of the iceberg, hidden underwater, could represent the facets of one’s character that keep you running. These traits, which are in runners world wide, are not governed by age, IQ, level of wealth, ethnicity or one’s profession, but revealed in adjectives like positive-thinking, determined, tough, adventurous, hopeful, generous, strong-willed, amenable, honest and focused, and it’s those that make up the profile of a true runner. So, if you’re a runner, how many of the words in the list describe you... and could they also be the reason for the powerful effect of the camaraderie that exists amongst runners? Such traits might reveal why, when we can’t run, through injury, say, we can be inconsolable until we are able to get back out running again, come rain or shine! In my four decades of running and racing I have experienced the friendship of runners, the generosity of spirit, and humanity at its best. It has been present when running with just one person or in a group, in races of only 30 runners or ones with thirty-five thousand runners. It’s there too in everything from short-distance events to ultra-marathons; road and off-road races as well as in town or city venues and ones that go through picturesque countryside. If I wanted to show someone new to our sport what the attraction of running is I would take them on a scenic route. For instance, if we began at the Leisure Centre, we would go down Arundel Road to the end, drawn along by the imposing view of Seaford Head, turn left then after 200 metres, turn right and go alongside the golf course up to Seaford Head. We’d carry on to Golf Course Corner then turn left towards Hope Gap. This particular section must surely rate as one of the most iconic stretches of cliff path anywhere in England. From Hope Gap we could either go up to the car park at South Hill Barn and down to Chyngton Lane or to the Coastguard Cottages, and along the Cuckmere to the main road before returning to the Leisure Centre. That route has a variety of terrain and an excess of natural beauty to captivate the mind of the runner, and you’ll probably finish the run feeling at peace with the world.

is the Mince Pie 10 (that’s ten country miles), which starts and finishes at the Meridian Centre, Peacehaven. It is always worth entering early as the race limit may be reached before the day of the race. The route is a mixture of road and off-road sections and should attract a field of about 500 runners clocking anything from 57 minutes (the course record) to two and a half hours, some of whom will probably pick up the festive theme and bedeck themselves in Santa costumes. Check it out on either the Sussex Races or Seaford Striders websites. Prior to this event, in November there are two diverse but good races to consider – a 5-mile cross-country race at Firle on the 10th and a week later, the long-established, flat and fast Brighton 10km. If I were you, I’d do all three!

UK Cycle Labs Launched Health and happiness are key ingredients in life, although a good work/life balance can be hard to achieve!

Removals & Storage H Local - Long distance H Full - Part loads H Full packing service available H Packing materials supplied H Piano removals H Fully insured H Free quotations

Six months in development, entrepreneurs Roger White and Steve Stubbs of Seaford are proud to open to the public their indoor cycling studio on Denton Island, Newhaven. Following a series of successful private trials, the guys held an Open Day celebration in September, followed by their first group session on 8th October. UK Cycle Labs offers a time-efficient, easy-to-use and enjoyable way to stay healthy, whether you are a cyclist or not. The model they have developed is unlike “spinning” and has been built upon a proven US model – UK Cycle Labs offers the first studio of its kind in the UK. The unique visual approach means that you can travel the world without stepping outdoors, so no dangerous roads or bad weather to contend with. The fun group sessions provide great motivational music and the informative post-session reports make it easy to measure your performance and fitness progress. Individual fitness testing is also available (and you can bring your own bike). In the studio, UK Cycle Labs provides quality road bikes in a variety of sizes, saddles for men and women, air cooling fans, shower facilities, refreshments and free, easy parking. As the weather takes a turn towards winter, why not give it a try, enjoy the great visual road trips (Alps, Tuscany, California etc.) and see how your fitness and cycling performance can improve? Our studio is open to the public 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday. For membership and bookings tel: Roger 07817 982053 or Steve 07710 807958, or visit www.ukcyclelabs.co.uk and www.facebook.com/ukcyclelabs.co.uk 10% discount to Seaford Scene readers with this page
