Welcome
Welcome to the November issue of Seaford Scene. Well summer has been and gone and autumn is well and truly here. I hope you remembered to put your clocks back last month? Talking of remembering, this month sees Remembrance Day on 11th and remember, remember the 5th of November, it’s bonfire night. With Christmas just around the corner there are arts and crafts, markets and fairs on, so why not go along if you’re looking to buy something a little different this year? There are choral and theatrical performances at various venues – more details in this issue and on the “what’s on” pages, and for sports fans there’s news from Seaford Cricket Club, Seaford Bowling Club and our regular feature Running Commentary. Be safe with fireworks and enjoy!

Tour of BritaiN – Seaford Goes “On Tour” The Tour of Britain Stage 7 was a huge success for all of those involved, and those who came and supported not only the riders but Seaford as a community. The events at The Salts, organised by Seaford Town Council, were a resounding success in all areas with thousands turning up for the momentous occasion. The crowds packed the salts as the weather held out for bicycle orientated activities and funfair attractions all day. The end of the day was just as exciting, as for the first time in Seaford a “sell out” outdoor cinema was put on showing The LEGO Movie, which was provided by Seaford Community Cinema and enjoyed by hundreds. Seaford Town Council would like to say a massive thank you to all the organisations and the support that was received from individuals that made the event possible. We would like to give huge thanks to our event partners: Cycle Seahaven, who provided the residents

of Seaford with free bike tune ups, servicing advice and demonstrations; Sustrans who organised the “Smoothie Bike”, provided “How to” videos and Cycle train rides with the “Cycle train team”, to Seaford Rotary who provided significant stewarding cover for spectators and stewarding of spectator parking; a thank you to the Seaford Lifeguards who once again covered our first aid for the day; to Seaford Community Cinema who ran the wonderful evening movie, we would also like to thank Wave Leisure who sponsored us and provided free demonstrations for spin classes, Brooklyn Hyundai for sponsoring the event, Tansleys for sponsoring our programme, Paul Franklin with House Clearance Co assisting with the spin bikes for Waves Leisure, and last but not least all the Councillors involved as well as some new volunteers who all helped make the day an enormous success!

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN & SEAFORD LIONS CLUB September was quite a busy month for the Lions, both socially and business-wise. The month started with our Immediate Past President’s Barbeque. A very enjoyable time was had by our Lions, friends and families. We then helped the Lionesses with their fashion show by moving chairs and furniture. We had a book sale on the 13th at Paradise Park. We would like to thank Paradise Park for all the support they give us. They have a box in which are placed unwanted books, glasses and mobile phones. These all help us. Our glasses man collects 1,000 pairs of glasses a month from Paradise Park and local opticians. These are sent to the Lions in Chichester who sort them and they are then used in third world countries. For those of you who drove past Paradise Park in August no doubt you saw the sign advertising the Lion’s Book Sale. We take over the entrance and at our last effort raised nearly £150. With the help and support of Paradise Park we have raised £1,000 over the past year selling books. Thank you Mark and all your team for the support Paradise Park gives us. The following weekend was our Diabetes testing at the Meridian Centre Peacehaven. This was very successful and revealing. We tested nearly 80 people and referred 25 to their doctor. This means that 1 in 3 (33%) were living with high blood sugar levels. It is thought that one third of the population nationwide are in danger of developing diabetes and all the problems related to this. If you think or want to know if one of these people is you then contact your doctor for a simple test. On the 28th September we presented the Newhaven Lifeboat with a cheque for £200 the rounded up proceeds we took at the Lifeboat Fete in July. We also, as part of their fundraising, went out on the boat for an individual donation by each member. It was a very pleasant trip. Next month, on 15th November, the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, a registered charity, will be at

Do come for a check, the Lions will be there supporting and helping at this event. The Club meet at 8pm on the fourth Friday of each month at the White Lion Hotel. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, ie if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Unfortunately though, due to unreported damage to one of the buses, we may have to restrict their usage. Photo: The Lions present a cheque for £200 to Newhaven Lifeboat.

SAINT GEORGIANS COMMEMORATE BATTLE OF BRITAIN DAY Members and Guests of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George commemorated Battle of Britain Day, Monday 15th September, with a formal dinner at The Star, Alfriston. After the meal, Chairman Bob Peedle MBE, reminded everyone of the Battle and why that day was chosen as Battle of Britain Day, a day that started to turn the tide against the Nazi hoards. It has become the day that we give thanks for the efforts of all those young men of the RAF and Fleet Air Arm from this country, the Commonwealth and many European Countries by then in Nazi hands, who flew against the might of the Luftwaffe. It is also a day to remember those men and women of the ground crews, those manning the control rooms and the radar stations, the Royal Artillery Anti Aircraft gunners, the Observer Corps at their listening posts and the civilian services, police, fire and ambulance crews and hospitals.
CALLING ALL POTENTIAL ADVISERS! Lewes District Citizens Advice Bureau is currently recruiting volunteers for both the Seaford and Lewes bureaux. If you enjoy helping people, have good communication skills and would like to make a difference to your community we would love to hear from you. You would benefit from a very thorough training, gain broad experience across a number of areas, from consumer rights to welfare benefits and would work alongside a great team of other people who come from all walks of life. Furthermore, many of our advisers go on to obtain paid work with the experience they’ve gained. We ask that you are able to commit at least 6 hours a week to the bureau, with some flexibility in hours, and that you possess good basic computer skills. We are keen to recruit from all sections of the community, whatever your background or experience.
The Chairman welcomed the guests and reported on the branch’s activities. These included the support given to the Mayor of Telscombe with his Leisha appeal. cIn welcoming the Guest of Honour, Wing Commander Kevin Tucker, Commanding Officer of the Sussex Wing of the Air Training Corps, he outlined the great work done by all the adult staff of the three service cadet organisations. Their work helps prepare the young men and women in the cadets for the ups and downs of adult life, as well as giving them a chance to achieve. In memory of the Branch’s first President, the late Don Mabey MBE, a veteran of the Second World War RAF Aircrew, the branch has donated a special trophy to the Sussex Wing to be presented annually to the best cadet. On Sunday 28th September, a small group from the branch joined the Air Cadets at a training weekend at Crowborough Camp to witness the presentation of the trophy to its first winner, Cadet Warrant Officer Jordan Smith. Among the other guests were Fran Tegg, Editor of Seaford Scene, and Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Clarke, a member of the Council of St George, as well as its National Standard Bearer and Chairman of the Aldershot Branch. He is organising the planting and dedication of a tree at the National Memorial Arboratum, at which there will be a delegation from Seahaven, including Branch President, Chairman and Standard Bearer, Frank Holland. As well as the Wing Commander, the Air Training Corps was represented by two Cadets, Cadet Flight Sergeant George Wells and Cadet Sergeant Luke Williams. During the latter part of his life, the Branch’s first President, Don Mabey MBE, (who died just before Christmas last year), along with his wife Maeve, raised thousands of pounds for the RAF’s major charity, the Wings Appeal. In Don’s honour, the proceeds of the night’s raffle have been donated to the Wings Appeal. Photo: Wing Commander Kevin Tucker, of the Sussex Wing

THE Centenary Clock, BROAD STREET The Centenary Clock on Broad Street in Seaford has seen a new lease of life. Donated to the town in 2005 by Seaford Rotary, the clock has seen a number of years out of operation due to mechanical failure. Now, Seaford Town Council who is responsible for the clock has arranged the relocation and restoration work by well-respected clock repairers Smiths Of Derby to ensure the clock can provide the service originally intended. Now with replacement parts, new lamps and a new home the Clock is back in service, not only providing the time for visitors to the town centre but also providing an attractive feature. A new made to measure cover for the face has been ordered as well. The clock has been relocated to the front of Cameron’s Pharmacy; not far from its original location on Hurdis House on Broad Street; the new location enables easier servicing in future, reducing costs, where previously specialist access equipment was required. Mayor Mark Brown said, “I am delighted that the clock is once again working and is now in a location where it can be more readily maintained. This is one more off the jobs to do list.”

MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB Sussex in the Great War
After the break from club meetings in August it was back to business with a talk from Kevin Gordon, our local historian, on what happened in and around Sussex during the First World War. As usual his talk was accompanied by some excellent pictures and copies of postcards from that era, which were fascinating and gave a real insight into the era. Thank you, Kevin, another very informative talk, and we are looking forward to seeing your new book which should be out by the time this appears.
RNLI Visit – The David and Elizabeth Acland
The club had received an invitation to visit Newhaven Lifeboat Station and were given a guided tour of the Severn class lifeboat which arrived in October 1999. The station was established in 1803, making it one of the longest established in the country, and The David and Elizabeth Acland at 17m (55ft 9in) is one of the biggest lifeboats on the South Coast. Our thanks go to the volunteers at the station who explained all the workings of the comprehensive array of equipment on board, and should any of us need help whilst “on the water” we know you will come to our rescue !
Seaford Youth Sports Awards
Thank you to all those who have nominated young sports people for this exciting new event, which is being held at Seaford Head Upper School on 22nd November. A full report and pictures will be published in a future edition.
Line Dancing
The President of Martello RC, Dave Winsor, arranged a surprise for the members when a group from Steps Dance Club arrived at one of the September meetings and gave an excellent demonstration of Line Dancing! Everyone was then invited to have a go, and inevitably some confusion and hilarity followed – it made for a great evening. Perhaps not quite up to “Strictly Come Dancing” standard but not bad...
Rotary District Conference
On the first weekend of October some members of the Martello Rotary Club and of The Rotary Club of Seaford, together with their partners, attended the annual Conference of Rotary District 1250 at the Bembridge Coast Hotel on the Isle of Wight. Everyone had a very enjoyable few days, the weather was kind, and there were some excellent presentations from organisations such as Teenage Cancer Trust, the Starfish Project, Hope and Homes for Children, Canine Partners, and many more. The hotel had organised a 60s theme for the Saturday night dinner with a live band and everyone had a great time. A District Conference is a wonderful opportunity for Rotarians and friends of Rotary to enjoy good fellowship, but most importantly to be truly inspired by the incredible range of projects being carried out in their communities and around the world.

SLATER TRAIL @ THE CRYPT
Seaford artist Eric Slater, who died half a century ago, has been causing quite a splash in his home town. The latest exhibition of his colour woodcuts at the Crypt on Nov 14th and 15th (Friday and Saturday) will include a film and a poster highlighting the new Slater Trail – a two hour walk through the countryside which inspired him. Also on view will be a marquetry version of “Seaford Head”- Slater’s most famous image which won a gold medal in California in the 1930s. It took a year for retired painter and decorator Les Dunford to complete. Les, who lives in Seaford, decided to do his own take on the print after spotting the design in Seaford Scene. Earlier in the year, members of Seaford Art Club
also paid homage to Slater (1896–1963) with various interpretations of some of his better known works. “It’s great that so many Seaford residents have been inspired by the artist who lived unobtrusively in the town for most of his life,” said James Trollope, author of Slater’s Sussex. “The town council has also agreed for a Slater Trail noticeboard to go up near the Martello Tower (and possibly, another at South Hill Barn) which will, hopefully, encourage walkers.” Books, cards and high quality reproduction prints of seven of Slater’s most popular designs will be on sale at the exhibition at reduced prices. Free admission 10.30am to 4.30pm. Photos: The marquetry version left, and original print, right.

Once again this year we are joined by a number of new artists from further afield whose work is also highly appealing. We have over the past 8 years established a reputation for providing innovative, quality goods which are reasonably priced. This year there is as usual a wide variety of goods which will delight us all. For those who enjoy visual art, there will be contemporary designs, painting, prints and cards by well-known Sussex artists, acrylic designs on wood and canvas, as well as framed prints of local scenes and advent calendars. Photography and pastel art offers an alternative choice for those looking for something different. There will be a unique range of textiles including hand printed silk gifts such as lampshades, boxes and bangles also hand dyed silk and woven scarves. Other textile artists will provide their ever popular handbags with beautiful beading and stitching, felted jewellery, Shambala bracelets, knitted bags, gloves

and socks, as well as lovely hand painted jute bags and dressing up items for children. Jewellery is always a popular gift. This year we have five jewellers all with very different styles and using a range of different materials including sterling silver, antique silver cutlery, semi precious stones, crystals and pearls of contemporary design, buttons, beads and enamelling. Four local paper crafters have worked all year to showcase their mixed media jewellery, notebooks and other paper based gifts. There will be a variety of ceramics, hand thrown and painted pottery for home and garden, as well as hand crafted wooden items. We are very pleased to welcome two new local artists whose specialities are stained glass and leather goods which will bring a new dynamic to our fair. As you can see, there will most definitely be something for everyone. There will be a plethora of beaded, sparkly, glitzy Christmas decorations created by many of the exhibition’s makers. We are delighted that the ever popular Jaju Beans and Leaves and will have gift boxes of their teas and coffees. You will as usual be able to take a break from shopping in our “café” area where you can enjoy delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink. The fair will be opened on Saturday 22nd November at 10.30am by the award winning local author Giles Paley-Phillips.
We look forward to seeing you there. Photos from top clockwise: Cheryl White, Geraldine Edmonds, “Made by”, Dawn Shelley Wells, Julie Pettitt, Diane Costello.

THE Newhaven Country Market The Newhaven Country Market is a branch of the national organisation “Country Markets Plc” based in Chesterfield. All our food producers have the required standard of food hygiene certificate and the Food Premises Accreditation. Open every Thursday between 9.45am and 1pm in the Hillcrest Community Centre (formerly the Old Boys’ School), our market has been operating for well over 10 years. The premises offer free parking, disabled access and toilets. The Hillcrest Café is well known for its very good food, cooked fresh daily on site. A special date for your diary is THURSDAY 27TH NOVEMBER, when our popular Christmas and Autumn-themed market is open for an extra hour until 2pm to enable customers to buy unique gifts and to place orders for seasonable fare such as Christmas cakes, puddings and mince pies. There will also be the usual wide range of stalls including cheese, eggs, fresh fish, Indian food and spices, baked goods for sale, jams and preserves, and wholefoods. Mediterranean Cod Bake
by Julian O’Vegetables
You can’t go very far south of our town without stumbling upon something full of tasty, healthy, freerange, sustainable food. Stumble too far you will get very wet into the bargain. We are fortunate to have so many outlets selling fresh locally caught fish, and if you believe, like I do, that we should support local small businesses, then our local inshore fishing industry benefits as well as the fishmonger. At this time of year, Cod return from wherever Cod go during the warmer months and will soon be appearing on a slab near you. If you can’t get Cod, then Hake or Pollock are fine. I’ve adapted this recipe from one of Jamie Oliver’s. I use steaks of the fish with the section of back-bone in, rather than fillets, as the bone helps keep the fish in one piece, and mostly fresh tomatoes rather than tinned as the dish can turn out too wet otherwise. Ingredients for four people: 4 Cod steaks about 1½ inches thick; 3 cloves garlic finely chopped; 1 bunch of fresh basil, the stalks removed and chopped, the leaves torn roughly; 6 large tomatoes cut into discs; a handful of black olives, stones removed and roughly chopped; 1 tablespoon capers, drained; ½ tsp chilli powder (optional); olive oil; 1 small carton of chopped tomatoes; red wine vinegar; sea salt; freshly ground black pepper. Sear the fish in a frying pan using a little olive oil and set aside. Add more oil to the pan and gently fry the garlic and basil stalks until the garlic is soft. Add the chopped tomato, chilli powder and a dash of red wine vinegar, stir and allow the sauce to simmer gently. Taste, season and adjust. Place half of the tomato discs in the bottom of a ceramic baking dish and place the Cod on top. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the olives and capers over the fish together with the basil leaves. Spoon the sauce over the fish and cover with the remaining tomato discs. Bake at 200°C for 15 minutes. Serve with new potatoes and green veggies. And be careful of that bone. Enjoy! Julian O’Vegetables is an alter ego of Alan Lindsay

THE CRYPT GALLERY: Our first Twenty Years Phil Duncan, Chair from the Arts@theCrypt Management Committee reflects on life as a volunteer at the gallery. Last month marked my first year as Chair on the management committee at the Crypt in what was a landmark year for the gallery; it’s twentieth anniversary. Since 2010, under the auspices of Seaford Town Council, the committee has consisted of volunteers made up from local residents, town councillors and artists. We meet once a month in the Studio/Workshop Gallery normally the third Wednesday of each month. It is during these meetings that we oversee the running of the gallery; set ourselves goals; plan to build on the successes and learn how not to repeat our failures. And, through the support of the Friends of the Crypt we have slowly but surely made great progress. We have our stalwart hirers to thank for our continued success: Seaford Photographic Society, Seaford Head School, The Christmas Craft Fair, Seaford and Newhaven
Art Clubs and not to forget the Last Minute Artists who have done a great deal in keeping the gallery open on a more regular basis. In addition, we have begun to expand the range of exhibitors providing visitors with a greater variety of events and this continues to be one of our major goals. The Friends have organised some brilliant events that have been extremely well attended: talks on Eric Ravilious, Eric Slater and Charleston Farmhouse; The Big Draw, Museums at Night, artists’ invitation evenings and of course their festive get together in December (watch out for tickets for this year’s). Through the Friends valiant efforts they have improved our profile in the town and raised valuable funds to improve our facilities for hirers and visitors alike. Improvements to the booking system mean that hirers can now contact one of the committee directly to make bookings or get answers to queries more efficiently. With hiring costs remaining the same next year there has never been a better time for artists and artist groups to book the gallery. Contact us by either email bookings@thecryptgallery.com or by telephone 07721 205 575; there is no need to contact Seaford Town Council. As for the future – further enhancements to the gallery in the form of improved lighting in the Main Crypt Gallery and more suitable flooring in the Studio/ Workshop gallery are due soon. Keen to encourage the next generation to participate in the running of the gallery we are collaborating with Seaford Head School to seek committee members of the future. I could not finish this article without mentioning Ralph Taylor and his involvement in reviving the fortunes of the gallery when it was transferred from the District to the Town Council. When I first joined the committee Ralph was still Chair and it was through his friendly encouragement I felt I too could make a lasting contribution to the gallery; so you can blame him. He will be sadly missed. The Friends of the Crypt are currently engaged in creating a memorial for Ralph in the form of a piece of artwork. Next events at the Crypt: Newhaven Art Club 8th – 13th Nov, James Trollope presents Works by Eric Ravilious 14th – 15th Nov, Christmas Craft Fair 22nd – 30th Nov, Friends Christmas Event 15th Dec. See www.arts@thecrypt.com for more information.

What an amazing summer that was! To be writing that sentence in the middle of October is testament to six months of glorious sun. Helped by a little August rain Seaford Community Garden’s produce excelled itself and we were still picking runner beans at the end of September while a rich crop of tomatoes was ripening inside and outside the poly tunnel, and chillies were blushing a hot red. One of the real joys of the summer was the sunflowers (right) planted against the high walls near the classroom as the result of our involvement in The Big Sunflower Project 2014 which was again raising awareness about the rare neuromuscular conditions centronuclear and myotubular myopathy. In exchange for seeds we are sending photographs of our sunflowers. You can follow the progress of the project on Facebook, Flickr, Project Dirt and Twitter. Meanwhile our sheltered plot at the Crouch is being prepared for winter, with the prolific courgette and

bean beds dug up and the flower beds tidied up. We do, however, appear to have a pole-vaulting fox or some other pesky critter that took a fancy to dozens of newly potted hyacinth bulbs that had been placed in a cleared veg bed. While the bulbs didn’t appear to be to its taste – fussy gourmets, Seaford foxes – it made a really good job of mixing them up. They had been planted in colour varieties so the replanted pots may reveal a few surprises come Christmas. Note to all bulb-seeking vermin: don’t bother leaping the walls because they are safely netted now! And talking of bulbs… as some of the perennials died down we have taken the opportunity to get in among the empty spaces to plant some spring-flowering bulbs (daffodils and tulips) for the garden. We won’t, however, be cutting down all the dead material as we want to keep the seed heads – particularly the grasses – for winter interest and also to provide hibernating places for some of those all-important good guys of the insect world – although inevitably the slugs and snails will get in there too! We are also going to take fairly drastic measures with the blackberries which, as well as providing loads of fruit have also put on lots of foliage this year. As a result they have begun to break down their supports and cascade over the paths. Still, if we can tackle them now with some hard pruning we should be in time to have another bumper crop next year – albeit one which has been constrained by new wires. Our classroom is getting some good use, and will soon see its second workshop, this time delivered by Bob and Tricia who will be explaining the theory and practice of herb propagation. Bob has been specialising in herbs for a few years now and has several beds that add their fragrance to the garden along with flavour to your cooking. Tricia is a horticulture professional who is often on hand to discuss problems and offer solutions to volunteers and visitors alike. And if she is not around then our other experts, people like Katie, Diana and Jan – she provides the beautiful Plant of the Month images that can be seen on our website at www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/scg/ – are bound to be around and happy to share knowledge and do that thing we all so much enjoy: just talking about our gardens. So please come in on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 12 noon. You’ll get a great welcome. The Garden Team

BREAKFAST AT NEWHAVEN & SEAFORD SAILING CLUB, WHATEVER THE WEATHER! Did you know you can enjoy a wonderful breakfast, every day of the week, at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club? Steve Mitchell of awardwinning Ab Fab Food Breakfasts has taken over in the newly refurbished “Galley” at NSSC and is serving delicious breakfasts, lunches and afternoon cakes in the nautical-themed café overlooking Seaford Beach. Whatever the weather, it’s a wonderful location to enjoy scrumptious food. Depending on your appetite, choose from the Big Buoy or Little Buoy breakfast – a traditional English breakfast of local eggs, smoked bacon, perfect Sussex sausages, sautéed potatoes and fresh mushrooms (cooked in butter!), baked beans and fresh tomato. For a lighter option, try the poached egg with lemon and coriandercured gavadlax – Steve’s own recipe, served on sour dough bread – delicious! And for a healthy but sweeter alternative, then Steve’s homemade granola is a definite winner – oats, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, ginger, cinnamon, apple sauce and more – with fresh fruit, locally produced yoghurt and a drizzle of honey. For toastlovers, Steve’s homemade marmalade and jams are truly tasty - I particularly like the rhubarb and vanilla jam! Tea, freshly ground coffee, juices and other soft drinks are available, as are licensed drinks from midday if you fancy a “hair of the dog”! And talking of dogs, there are also doggie treats available as dogs are most welcome in the café So why not park up in the car park, take a brisk stroll along the seafront, with or without the dog, and then settle down to a delicious homemade breakfast, with the finest ingredients, in the cosy surrounds of the sailing club. You won’t be disappointed and I can guarantee you’ll be back for more! The Galley at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Entry is from the car park on Marine Drive (next to the Buckle Holiday Park) or from the beach.

Poppy success
A bright sunny morning saw the Royal British Legion annual sponsored Poppy Walk set off from Newhaven Fort. With Seaford Martello Tower the final destination, all the entrants completed the walk. Old friends and first timers made new friends, and the happy throng was monitored by the volunteers of St John Ambulance. An amazing £6,000 was raised. A big thanks to Morrisons store, Seaford for their support and the Seaford, and Newhaven Branches of the Royal British Legion who organised the event. The annual Poppy Appeal commences late October and volunteer collectors are needed, in the dry, in the warm, in Morrisons or house to house if preferred.

TV doctor & presenter team up to raise awareness of care solutions in Sussex Television’s Embarrassing Bodies host Dr Dawn Harper (top) and This Morning and Loose Women presenter Ruth Langsford have teamed up with a Sussex care provider to get older and vulnerable people the right care and support to remain at home. The announcement follows research that more than 7,212 over 65s in East Sussex have a long-term health problem or disability and of these, a third live alone*. Centra Prime Care has enlisted the television personalities to raise awareness of care that could support Sussex residents to live independently, such as home care. The Seaford-based provider offers its customers and their families trusted and personalised in-home care that helps them live independently for longer, such as domestic help

with every day tasks, medication management or telecare support. Dr Dawn Harper said: “As a practicing GP, many concerned relatives come to me because they don’t know what to do about their parents’ care. I’ve found that many are more likely to turn to a care home when it comes to looking for support. This is a drastic move which can often be costly and not the right solution for someone who can live more independently. People don’t know enough about more appropriate solutions which can protect safety and independence in and out of the home, like telecare.” Ruth Langsford is also backing the campaign after signing up to Centra Prime Care’s telecare service Centra Pulse for her 84-year-old-mother Joan, pictured. She said: “It became clear that my mum found it difficult to ask for help when my father developed Alzheimer’s disease. There was nothing we could do or say to get her to admit she might need more support. “Thanks to Centra Prime Care my mum can now remain safe and independent in her own home as she has the help she needs at the touch of a button. It’s heartening to discover that Centra offers a wide range of care and support services to help older and vulnerable people stay safe, independent and in control, with their dignity intact.” New research by Centra Prime Care and YouGov found that while 14 per cent of people with a parent aged 65 or over in Sussex and the south east had asked them whether they would be happy to go into a care home, just one per cent have spoken to their parent about getting telecare at home*.Telecare technology includes personal alarms, fall detector sensors and GPS devices which support vulnerable people, including more than 100,000 Centra customers, to live more independently in and out of the home. Allyson Kay, Managing Director at Centra Prime Care, said: “With Ruth and Dawn’s help, we’re urging families in Sussex to explore the wide range of care and support out there which can suit a variety of different needs, such as home care and telecare.”Visit centragroup.org.uk/ primecare for more information. *Figures from the Office of National Statistics

Carol’s April concert – truly a performance to remember If you were among the audience at Carol Singing in April, a concert held in the Barn Theatre this spring, you may not have realised as the show began just what a treat was in store. You probably listened expectantly as Carol Rowlands, a professional opera singer and long-time Seaford resident, launched into an unfamiliar parlour song written (she explained) by her father many years before. Then she upped the ante with classical works by Britten and Vaughan Williams, taking full advantage of her ringing mezzo voice. When she followed these with a dramatic modern piece written for her by pianist Laurence Rugg, it was clear the event was shaping into something rather special. By the time Carol delivered her atmospheric rendering of two cabaret numbers the audience was hooked. Then Cole Porter’s Miss Otis brought cheers, and Carol segued into a delightful Jerome Kern two-hander, engagingly abetted by Seaford-based singer John Brackenridge. The first half closed with a remarkable ensemble rendering of a Beatles number. The second half saw an emotionally-charged performance of Che Faro, followed by stunning duets with locally-based opera singers Clarissa Meek (Hansel and Gretel) and Andrew MacKenzie-Wicks (Nuits d’Ivresse). And then came two comic numbers, showing Carol’s mischievous sense of humour and subtlety. The close brought a standing ovation.
Something else that few in the audience can have known at the outset, though Carol herself hinted at it early in the concert, is that she had advanced ovarian cancer. She had already cancelled a job at Covent Garden, uncertain whether she could meet their rigorous schedules or perform to her full ability, and she threw all her energies into this concert instead. It was to be her legacy to the world. Yet as the date approached, she had doubts as to whether she was up to it. St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne saved the day. Carol spent an invaluable ten days there at the beginning of April, and they got her pain management under control. The show was back on track. Friends and fellow-performers descended on Seaford from as far afield as Manchester, Hull and west Scotland. A sound-engineer cousin drove from all the way from Germany with recording gear. But then on the day Carol woke to an attack of dizziness unrelated to her illness. What else could go wrong? Happily, nothing. By lunchtime she had rallied, and that evening she went on to give the performance of a lifetime. Eight weeks later she died – but the concert fully lived up to her expectations. Even if you discount the circumstances, it’s hard to imagine she ever sang some of the numbers better. And now, as planned by Carol herself, her family have released it on video DVD and audio CD, and are selling these through her website (www.carolrowlands.com) in aid of charity. They’re quite something.

At our November meeting, President Mary Morris was delighted to introduce The Chief Executive of Headway, Michele Fleming, who explained the work of the charity and its organisation. She was accompanied by a young mother who gave an extremely moving account of the effect her husband’s brain injury had on him and the whole family. They had stayed at home together as a unit with help from Headway. Her moving talk revealed the bravery and love within the family. Mary was delighted to present a token cheque (left) with more to come from the proceeds of our Silent Auction, which took place at the Blatchington Golf Club on 29th September. It was an overwhelming success socially and raised much needed funds for the benefit of the Headway charity.

A BUSY WEEK FOR THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE SEAHAVEN BRANCH A busy week for the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George started on Saturday 27th September when a delegation lead by President Laurie Holland travelled to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Lichfield. This is a spiritually uplifting place that recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country. It is emerging as a worldrenowned centre for Remembrance. The Branch President was accompanied by Bob Peedle MBE, Chairman, and Committee members Linda Wallraven, Maureen Peedle, Liz Holland, Standard Bearer Frank Holland and Rosemary Holland. The visit was organised to meet with other members from branches around the country and to witness the planting and dedication of a tree for the Royal Society’s one hundred and twentieth anniversary. Chairman Bob said, “It was a truly moving experience. It was the first time I had been to the Arboretum and found the commemorative trees and memorials very impressive. Anyone visiting the Armed Forces Memorial at the heart of the Arboretum cannot help but be moved by the atmosphere and the list of over 1,600 names of service personnel who have lost their lives in conflict or as a result of terrorism since 1945.” The next day Branch President Laurie, with Chairman Bob and member Bob Newton, visited Crowborough Training Camp to visit the Sussex Wing of the Air Training Corps. At the end of their weekend, the Cadets and Staff have a parade where awards are given to those cadets who have excelled in various fields. The members of the Branch were
56
there to award the best cadet of the year with a special trophy, the Don Mabey MBE Trophy. This will be awarded annually and commemorates the life and work of the late President of the Seahaven Branch who died age 93 at the end of 2013. President Laurie Holland said, “It was great to see these young achievers training. They were enjoying themselves with plenty of activities that give them a great experience as well as helping to prepare them for their future careers.” Finally, Chairman Bob attended the AGM of Seaford Lifeguards on Thursday 2nd October at their seafront headquarters. The Seahaven Branch had responded to a plea for the provision of four heavy duty binoculars that are essential in the work of the volunteers who provide a vital safety service to everyone using the beach. He made the presentation to Laurie Holland, who is President of the Seaford Lifeguards as well as of the Seahaven Branch. Photos from top: The Don Mabey MBE Trophy for the best Air Training Corps Cadet of the Sussex Wing was presented at Crowborough Camp (left to right) Bob Newton MBE, branch member, Wing Commander Kevin Tucker, CO of the Sussex Wing, Cadet Warrant Officer Jordan Smith who won the trophy, and Laurie Holland, President Seahaven Branch. Parading at the National Arboretum following the National Standard of The Royal Society of St George is Frank Holland, Seahaven Branch Standard Bearer followed by Branch Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, carrying the ceremonial spade. Bob is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of St George.” Branch Chairman Bob Peedle MBE presents the four new heavy duty binoculars to Laurie Holland in his capacity as President of the Seaford Lifeguards.
During the visit to Crowborough Camp Laurie Holland met Cadet Corporal Lauren Thynne, the Drum Major of the Sussex Wing Pipe Band after the Band played for the visitors. He was impressed by the fact that the instruments and special uniforms had all been bought from funds raised by the Band members. Here, Corporal Thynne shows off their newly acquired Mace. TD Securities London Charity Auction FOR SEAFORD CHARITY TD Securities London raised an amazing £88,000 for it’s four supported charities in 2014. Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group is one of those lucky charities! On June 26th 2014, TD Securities London, held their annual charity auction, with employees bidding on over 300 items in a combination of silent and live auctions. Items auctioned ranged from ladies semi final tickets to Wimbledon, a night out with the PAs, speciality wines and whiskies, a personal shopping experience at Selfridges and a personalised calendar of the IT team. TD Securities employees are committed to coming together and supporting charities that make a difference in the lives of people in their communities. In partnership with clients, suppliers, colleagues, friends and family, TD Securities employees are continuing their tradition of giving back to communities by supporting the London Charity Auction.
58
This year they selected four charities: East End Community Foundation Study Support Weekends, who were supported last year where proceeds have helped more than 400 young people in some of the most impoverished areas of London, Crossroads Care West Kent Young Carer’s program, Friends of Shelby Newstead, and Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group. Each of the charities involved received a fantastic £22,000. Special thanks go to group member and TD Securities employee, Jon Davies, for nominating us, Jacqui Douglas and Joanne Walsh and the rest of the TD charity committee for all their hard work in organising the event, and of course to everyone that attended this year’s charity auction. About TD Securities: TD Securities is a leading Canadian Investment bank and financial provider with offices in London, New York, Singapore, Toronto and across Canada. Now in it’s 17th year, the TD Securities Underwriting Hope Campaign and Auction has raised a remarkable $1.35 million in Toronto and £88,000 in London. Since the charity auction began in 1998, TD Securities employees have worked hard to raise awareness and collected donations generating over $10 million for children and their families.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY AUTUMN CONCERT SATURDAY 29th NOVEMBER 7.30pm ST LEONARD’S CHURCH, SEAFORD The Choir’s first concert of the 2014/15 season will take place under the invigorating leadership of our new Music Director, Anna Tabor. A varied programme of shorter seasonal music will be performed by the Choir, together with soprano, tenor and bass soloists, and ably accompanied by Nick Houghton on the organ.
Franz Schubert ‘Mass in G’
Schubert was 18 when he composed this, his second mass. The most familiar and popular of his masses, it was finished in six days in March 1815, for a performance in the Lichenthal Church, outside Vienna, where he sang as a choir boy. The text is that of the traditional Roman Catholic mass, Kyrie, Gloria,

Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Schubert’s music is lyrical, joyful, majestic with flowing melodies, ending with a subdued prayer for peace, understated yet lovely, like the mass it concludes.
Gerald Finzi ‘In Terra Pax’
Completed in1956, In Terra Pax is Gerald Finzi’s reflection on the Christmas story, using extracts from St Luke’s gospel and a poem by Robert Bridges to recreate the nativity of the English countryside, with shepherds abiding in the fields of the Cotswolds. This placing of the Biblical story into an English pastoral content is entirely consistent with Finzi’s close affinity with the English Romantic tradition. The baritone soloist takes the part of the poet, and the soprano is cast as the angel, whilst the choir narrates the familiar biblical text.
Ralph Vaughan Williams ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’
Written in 1912, ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ is a work for baritone and chorus. First performed at the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford Cathedral, the work is a single movement of around 12 minutes and is based on four English folk carols, including the Sussex Carol.
Hector Berlioz ‘The Shepherds’ Farewell’
Berlioz produced the oratorio ‘L’Enfance du Christ’, dating from 1854 and is a creation of supreme beauty. The best known section, ‘The Shepherds’ Farewell’ tells of the shepherds saying goodbye to the baby Jesus as he leaves Bethlehem for Egypt with Mary and Joseph to avoid the slaughter of newborn children in Judaea by King Herod, having been warned by the angel. It is a glorious blend of warm sounds, sublime choral harmonies and sensitive accompaniment. A retiring collection will give everyone an opportunity to support the St James’ Trust (Seaford), an independent Seaford charity, staffed entirely by volunteers, who run or host a range of groups and activities which cater for elderly or disabled local people.
Tickets priced £10 are now available from our Sponsors, Newberry Tully Estate Agents, 52 Church Street, from the Secretary tel. 01323 482387, members of the Choir, or at the door on the evening of the concert. Running Commentary... When the Seaford Striders was formed back in 1986 it brought together people who shared a love of running. Since then, the Club has expanded to include related interest groups. There are runners who also take part in triathlons, others who cycle together, and some who do long walks. One of the founder members, Kay McDonald, who at her peak was completing 10km races in about 45 minutes and has a marathon PB of 4hrs 05mins, has recently found a new direction as a substitute for running. Kay explains… “Having decided that due to an unrelated back injury I would have to stop running, I looked for an alternative means of getting out into the countryside. I turned to Nordic Walking, which makes use of walking poles. Because of my constant pain from the back injury and lack of solutions, I took matters into my own hands and trained first as a gym instructor and then as a personal trainer, before I could embark on training to become a Nordic Walking Instructor, which I achieved with Nordic Walking UK in August. Despite my back injury I can still remain mobile, I have less fear of falling and still get a good cardiovascular workout, and was amazed how

much easier walking up hills was with my poles and how I could now cover unstable terrain with confidence too. My posture has also improved. I have walked with a group in Eastbourne and found it a great social activity, and I would like to offer the experience to others in the Seaford area. Through Nordic Walking I recently managed parts of both the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and Suffolk Coast Path, although where it had been washed away in Suffolk the beach was heavy going. Now, many enjoyable walks along the South Downs from Birling Gap, Crowlink and Seaford Head Nature Reserve are all within my reach again. I feel that I have a new lease of life. If anyone is interested, I can be found most Wednesday evenings at the Downs Leisure Centre with the Seaford Striders at 7pm as I hope to set up a Nordic Walking Group within the Club for nonrunning members. I will be able to provide introductory sessions and poles, and once the technique has been mastered, the health benefits can be enormous.” I have not tried Nordic Walking myself but have seen an increasing number of people enjoying the sport on the Seafront and up on the Downs striding out, looking focused yet relaxed. Five races that deserve a mention for this month are the Whitbread Hollow Cross-country 5-miler in Eastbourne on Sunday 2nd November, The Poppy Half Marathon in Bexhill on Saturday the 8th, but also offering a 5km and ¼ marathon as well. On Sunday 16th is the flat and fast Brighton Seafront 10km, followed on the 23rd by The Starfish Endurance Race in Bexhill. This event requires runners, in teams or individually, to complete as many laps as possible of the 5-mile course in 6 hours. Wrapping up November is the very popular but hilly Crowborough 10km on the 30th. As usual, further details of all these races can be found on the Sussex Races website. Seaford Cricket Club 2014
for seven junior teams. A big undertaking in which every minute of time is given voluntarily for the love of the game, and to see young people enjoying them selves in a constructive and safe environment.
The season concluded on 20th September with the 1st XI winning the East Sussex League Intersport of Lewes Plate final against Forest Row
This year young players had the benefit of using a newly replaced non turf pitch, funded by the club with generous assistance from our Town Council and The Lords Taverners. This is a very successful venture following on from the on going development of a playing area in the north east area of the Salts, an entirely self-funded enterprise to help cater for the large number of players in the club of all abilities ranging in age from six to sixty plus.
The club’s adult teams, four playing every Saturday and a Sunday/Midweek side, had busy seasons. The 1st XI and 4thXI easily held their own in the 1st and 11th divisions respectively of the Parkers Building Supplies East Sussex League, the 2nds stayed in division 5 and the 3rds came agonisingly close to promotion from division 8. The Sunday/Midweek side welcomed a number of touring sides to the Salts as well as local sides and this year the club hosted Seaford’s other cricket club, Seagulls, as there are now no other turf pitches available in the town apart from at the Salts.
The club’s contribution to the community has been recognised by our securing of charitable status, and a “Club Mark”, awarded by the English Cricket Board, is recognition of our standing as a safe and secure environment for the town’s youngsters to learn and enjoy the most popular of summer sports.
Captains, coaches, tea ladies, committee members, ground staff and our sponsors all play their part in the continuing The club’s pride and joy is its Junior section. The younger shows included a script written by nineyear-old actress, Soufriere Etherington, and the young adult performance featured an emotional song called “Take My Hand” composed by Seahaven’s Got Talent winner, sixteen year old Tyanna Griffiths. Other highlights of the show included a fully working flea circus and “Zoltar” fortune telling machine created by props master, Ray Woolven. Show patrons included the Mayors of Telscombe, Newhaven and Seaford, Cllrs Wayne Botting, Judith Ost and Mark Brown, and the Mayoress of Peacehaven, Louise Robertson, who all praised the ethos of SMTJ – confidence, creativity and consideration for others.

Rotary Club of Seaford
A Bootiful Record-breaking Day! Records tumbled as the Rotary Club of Seaford presented its September Car Boot, Craft and Produce Fair at Martello Fields on the first Sunday of the month, with an impressive 77 pitches sold and the punters coming out in abundance. We raised £859 for charities and worthy causes to boot! The Club has known nothing like it since the early days of the Boot Fair project a few years ago when one August event raised nearly £1,000 for our charitable causes. This time, the sun shone on our efforts (possibly to make up for the complete wash-out in August!) with the ice cream man selling just as much as the hot food truck. Be ready for the next series of Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs, which start next year at the Martello Fields on Sunday 26 April.

Tour of Britain, Seaford
A brave crew of eleven Rotarians set forth on Saturday 13th September, some to undertake car parking duties at the Martello Fields while others marshalled along parts of the cycle route. They were a credit to the Rotary Club of Seaford in their resplendent, bright tabards, anxious as always to serve the local community. Your correspondent was thrilled to be allocated to the 1 – 3pm slot car parking slot and arrived early to cope with high demand as the cyclists would come through the town at around 2pm.Upon arrival there were 5 cars parked. They consisted of four car parkers’ cars and one “paying customer”. At 1pm two car parkers departed and one arrived leaving only 4 cars in total. We had peaked. One lady with her dog kindly put her small change into our collecting box, as did one of the car parking team. Several passers by enquired “Where are the cyclists?” and they were given useful directions. It was a peaceful afternoon... Oh, and we raised the grand sum of £3.66 for local charities. Some you win, some you don’t!
Association of Carers
Recently Nadia Bodle (right)came along to a lunch meeting of the Rotary Club of Seaford where she explained to members the role of the Association of Carers. This organisation has grown to support unpaid Carers in all of East Sussex – a measure of the success and need of this initiative. The mission of the Association is “Supporting unpaid Carers in East Sussex to continue in their caring role by providing free, high quality, volunteer-led services that encourage independence and reduce isolation.” The services provided by the Association are dependent upon volunteers who give regular respite breaks to Carers, enabling the opportunity to have some time to themselves. As well as that, the Association offers Talk and Support, providing Carers with a listening ear and the opportunity to discuss their caring role in confidence. Some of the volunteers use their skills teaching Carers how to use their computers in ways

that will support them in their caring role, helping them to have more time to themselves and reducing their isolation. Others give Young Carers the opportunity to take a break from their caring role and/or supporting them with their studies. Volunteers come from all walks of life and give their time for free. They are often rewarded by the difference they make to people’s lives. The Association of Carers is funded by; • East Sussex County Council • Grants from trusts & foundations • Donations from individuals & charitable organisations • Corporate sponsors • Fundraising events • Collections • Legacies & gifts in Memoriam. The Barn Theatre, Seaford
The Singers & Swingers Club
“Don’t you go causing trouble, Ma’am,” drawled the growly Yankee tones of a grumpy New York cop as I approached the steps leading down to The Barn Theatre. “Yeah, I know you,” a man, hardly a gentleman, whom I later recognised as the owner of the louche and loud Duke’s Club, added with an undertone of menace. Once safely inside the foyer, however, I had only to mention Seaford Scene’s name and I was given a knowing wink and offered an “upgrade”. With 15 minutes to go to showtime the atmosphere was buzzing, with dry ice “cigarette smoke” wafting sleazily about. Sat down at a little table in front of the stage with a drink and nibbles, I realised that actually this musical extravaganza had already begun. Saucily simpering cocktail waitresses and a candy seller were tripping coquettishly about serving the punters, a pair of drunken socialites, bottle on table, were swigging gin, a gangster was muscling his – actually her – way around, and the club manager was efficiently overseeing the preparation of the club for the evening’s show.
As the curtains parted to show a band centre stage, the company burst into triumphant song, then the phone rang. Disaster. The booked troupe had cancelled. Cue all the club’s staff and patrons to audition for parts. Yes, the stage was set for a series of crowd-pleasing songs redolent of the Swing era. Think Art Deco, the Chrysler Building, steam rising from pavement vents, the Mob. The plot was thin to the point of invisibility, but that was actually an advantage because we were left to enjoy song after song – all the old favourites like Summertime, beautifully rendered by Sharona Turnbull as cleaner Ella, and Falling Leaves, plaintively sung by Lemiah Davey making her society debut and playing a waitress. The second half was devoted to the evening’s show, cue lots more great songs. The cast was too big and the songs too many to talk about individuals, but praise must go particularly to the acting and singing skills of David Foster, who kept the show together as Sammy the manager, Steve Llewelyn as owner The Duke, Sylvia Elder as his wife, Sarah Eaton as Mac The Knife, John Walsh as the Crooked Book-keeper, who is dramatically shot, Gary Robertson, making his debut, as Officer Kowloski, Cherry Newby as The Hooker and Kate Horscraft as the candy seller. The musicians, under director Russell Taylor, were great, with some terrific saxophone from Gavin Job, and Darren Vassie blowing great trumpet. The show was given added pace by some attractive dancing by Becky Hill, Megan Pierce and Sam Spowage, and the costumes and Manhattan skyline backdrop were terrific too. But now it’s time for directors Sue James and Tony Still to take a well-deserved bow. Not only did they play their own parts, Still on fantastic drums and James as a boozy patron, but they didn’t miss a trick to bring one of the best musicals ever to this stage. Andrea Hargreaves

SUPPORT FOR CTLA Community transport charity, CTLA, has received support from groups and individuals following the callous theft of exhaust systems on the 8th September, which put two vehicles out of action and left staff and volunteers devastated.
Donations were received from individuals through the Localgiving online site of just over £100 with another £100 donation received from the Director of Northstar Technology Ltd, Christian Fleming, who said: “While meeting at Peacehaven Chamber of Commerce this

Now the weather has turned colder, why not sort out your winter wardrobe and help Chestnut Tree House, your local children’s hospice? The charity needs your unwanted winter gear to sell in its shops to help raise much-needed funds to provide hospice care for children and young people with life-shortening and life-threatening illnesses in East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. Coats, jumpers, boots, shoes, ski wear, hats, scarves, gloves, winter wear and formal wear – Chestnut Tree House needs them all! All you need to do is drop your donation in to your local Chestnut Tree House shop and every penny raised from the sale of your unwanted items will go directly towards providing vital care for local children and their families. We hope our donation will help close the unexpected funding hole in the CTLA finances, and keep this vital community service running.” Administration Assistant Marilyn Nolan, held a cake sale at SCDA Nursery on Denton Island, raising £25 and the ladies from the Hillcrest Centre “Knit and Natter” group held a collection at their weekly meeting and donated £13. Roy’s Liquor Store, South Coast Road, Peacehaven have a collection tin on the counter for customers to make a donation and the Body Shop Foundation in Littlehampton have sent a box of products to help raise funds through a raffle. World War 1 in Pictures
In recognition of World War 1 and Rememberance Sunday this month, this colour photo is of the practice trenches on Seaford Head and the black and white photo is of the genuine trenches in the battle fields of France. It’s also interesting to note that, like the German Shepherd dog in the colour photo, Rin Tin Tin (September 1918, August 10th 1932) was a male German Shepherd Dog – formally known as the Alsatian in Britain – that was rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier, Lee Duncan, who nicknamed him “Rinty”.

When We Are Married
Seaford Little Theatre Tickets are already on sale at Stitch in Broad Street, Seaford, for the last play of this season at Seaford Little Theatre from 7th to 15th November. Evening performances are at 7.45pm (except on the 8th or 9th) and the matinée is at 2.30pm on 8thNovember. Tickets are £8, with reductions on the 7th, 8th and 15th to £7. “When We Are Married” is a Yorkshire farcical comedy by one of the great 20th century dramatists, J.B. Priestley. This is one of Priestley’s best plays, set in his native Yorkshire: a fast moving comedy with well drawn characters involved in comic situations. It is set in 1908, so the costumes and scenery add to the experience for the audience. When it was first performed in London in 1938, Priestley himself played the part of Ormonroyd, the photographer – described as “a gem of a comedy role”. The action revolves around three highly respectable couples who were all married on the same day, at the same time, by the same clergyman. Or were they?
When the play opens they are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary in true Yorkshire style, but the celebrations are rudely interrupted when the news is broken that, owing to a dreadful mistake, they are not properly married after all... The play is directed by Mary Young, with many familiar faces in the cast, as well as three new members. It is this year’s revival production, having featured in the 1985 season to some acclaim.

New Sussex Opera’s Oberon reveals hidden delights behind the famous overture True to its tradition of introducing audiences to less familiar works by well-known composers, New Sussex Opera’s production of Weber’s Oberon brings a stellar cast to a work that marries a fantastical plot with delicate, tuneful music, rich in subtle harmonies and beautiful orchestration. Heading the cast in the role of Reiza is South African born Sally Silver, who wowed the critics in the title role of Scottish Opera’s acclaimed production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Sally, who makes a welcome return to NSO after her 2011 performance in Gounod’s Mireille, is joined on stage by Australian tenor Adrian Dwyer, Canadian tenor Adam Tunnicliffe, Irish mezzo Carolyn Dobbin and British baritone Damian Thantrey. Supporting the soloists will be the famous NSO chorus – augmented for this major production to a total of 44 experienced, disciplined voices – and a team of dancers.
The international make-up of the cast mirrors the twists and turns of the plot, which switches with breath-taking speed from the caliph’s palace in Baghdad to the shores of the Tigris, a shipwreck on a Greek shore and the emir’s house in Tunis. But audiences will keep pace with the action thanks to a clear-voiced narrator, plus the fact that the opera will be sung in the original English. Marshalling the NSO’s creative forces is opera, stage and film director, Max Key, whose next big assignment after Oberon will be a revival of the Flying Dutchman at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. “The plot of Oberon may be loosely based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream” says Max. “But it does have considerable contemporary resonance.” On the conductor’s rostrum and getting the best from the talented St Paul’s Sinfonia is Nicholas Jenkins, a familiar figure to NSO audiences – and, increasingly, to audiences across Europe. Musically, theatrically, artistically – NSO’s next major production will show audiences just what lies behind one of the world’s most famous overtures. Following on from the success of the filming for the Macmillan Garden Trail back in July, newly launched Brighton TV Channel, Latest TV, has invited local Seaford gardener, Geoff Stonebanks to have a weekly slot on gardening issues on their Latest Homes Live TV Show, which airs over 20 times throughout the week on the new channel. Geoff appeared in the studio on the second show but now shows hosts, Andrew Bullock and Simone Thorogood, have recently spent the day filming sequences for inclusion in upcoming shows in Geoff ’s garden, Driftwood, in Bishopstone.

Geoff spent the morning demonstrating to both hosts how to propagate ferns, take fuchsia cuttings and then how to create a planter from reclaimed chairs bought from the local dump. Andrew and Simone then both tried their hands at doing the same. They turned out to be quite competitive, even duelling with secateurs! The picture shows their finished chair planters. Simone posted on facebook after the film shoot “Getting muddy and green fingered with the lovely Geoff Stonebanks to film our new weekly gardening feature. He was so welcoming, a great teacher and made us loads of cups of coffee! Thanks.” These sequences will be shown on Latest Homes Live over the next few weeks, with more shoots in the garden and some studio appearances scheduled throughout the winter months.

TWINNERS TWIN WITH CHATTERS
Seaford’s Twinning Association, in its 33rd year, launched the Plauschgruppe, a German Conversation group, 18 months ago. At the STA’s AGM the members voted to join the 2 groups together. Now members can have 10 monthly social events like skittles and quizzes, 10 conversation meetings usually in the White Lion, and combine to host German visitors next summer. All for an annual sub of £10.
07759 298184 (office hours) 01323 899373 (after 6.30pm)
In November the social event will be a fun quiz (no cash prize) on Saturday 15th in the Council Chamber at 7.30. Visitors’ and guests’ entrance is £2. There will be a raffle as always. Questionmaster on this occasion will be Chairman Peter White, and teams of up to 6 can take part. Quizzers are asked to bring their own drinks. Anyone wanting interval fish and chips (at £5) should order them before the 11th from Liz on 01323 896315. The Conversation event for November hasn’t yet been finalised but it may be a combined chat and social evening along the lines of the Bavarian Oktoberfest, with German food, drink and music. Watch out for the posters and facebook announcements later in November. To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

Seaford Gardening Club We are now in late autumn, so let’s hope for a reasonable winter! Our September talk was given by Joanna Wilkins and was entitled “History of Gardening’” She began her talk by saying that she “enjoyed gardening but was not good at it” though her knowledge is vast and detailed. She enjoys excavating at places such as Tide Mills and Fishbourne Roman Villa, to mention a couple of places of historic interest. She explained that the Romans brought gardening to England and mainly planted for pleasure and not for food. They also introduced the first garden centres. They created rectangular structures to give a sense of order and included water features and shaded areas. Small windows were cut into the walls to give a view of calm; also statuary, small trees, roses and lilies but there were no flower beds. They also favoured topiary and intricate planting patterns. Christianity brought in its own methods, eg. monastery gardens and shady areas for ladies to walk along as so that they didn’t catch the sun and become tanned – this was

classed as “common”! The noblemen created parks for hunting and small gardens to grow herbs and other plants of interest. Sight, smell and sound (from water features) were important. To give a sense of tranquillity and pleasure they spent a lot of time and money creating gardens for their pleasure and quiet times. The Middle Ages changed gardening dramatically. The gardens were large and ornate and cost a great deal of money. They wanted to show friends how rich and important they were. The French queen brought over the French influence with the grandeur of parterres, grottos, etc. Other monarchs also added their own ideas and sway to gardening in England. Joanna gave us much information and different ideas and systems – far too much to write about in a short article. It was a very informative and interesting talk. We shall definitely ask her back again in the future. Photo: The Roman Gardens in Chester Our next talk, on Wednesday 26th November, will be by Ian Everest entitled “From the Sussex Ox to Fordson Major”. It will start at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (using the front door opposite Tesco). Visitors are welcome for a fee of £2. If you wish to join for the year the cost is £10. There are no extra charges. Refreshments are available and we occasionally have a raffle. More information is available by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or by visiting the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/ SGC. You are most welcome – come along for an informative evening’s entertainment.

THINING FRUIT CROPS
t
2014 has been a good year for bumper fruit crops but many people had problems of small, overcrowded fruit on their trees and bushes. So make a note on next years calendar to start thinning fruit from about June onwards. There’s no need to wait for the results of the “June Drop”. Don’t worry if you’ve over thinned your fruit. The more you remove the larger the remaining fruit will be. Start by removing all fruit that is too small, immature or diseased. As the fruit swells check again every two to three weeks and remove some more if it again looks crowded. The more you remove the more nutrients go to the remaining fruit. Fruit that are particularly improved by thinning are peaches and nectarines. Thin to leave only one fruit per cluster and later on only one fruit every eight inches. Remove all fruit facing the wrong way.
The society has already planned a full and exciting year of events for 2015. Full details will be issued at the AGM and subsequently on their website seafordhorti.com Mike Parker to d

he Seaford & District Horticultural Society’s combined Annual General Meeting and Award Presentation evening is being held from 7pm on Thursday 27th November at St Leonard’s Church Hall. This is always a popular event when members will hear reports on the society’s events, outings and shows held throughout the year. This will be followed by the elections for the 2015 Committee and then take a look forward to the 2015 schedule and programme. The evening continues with the usual grand raffle and light refreshments. Finally their President Mick Brown will present the winners of the society’s many cups, trophies and medals with their awards.
JOBS TO DO IN NOVEMBER
3 November 5th is Bonfire Night. Keep you pets safely indoors. If you’re having a bonfire check it for hidden wildlife before lighting. 3 Clean out bird boxes. Birds will soon start looking for winter roosts ready for next spring. 3 Rake up fallen leaves. Keep the garden tidy so pests cannot find shelter for the winter. 3 If you have bare ground or raised beds during winter, try sowing green manure seed. Dig this in during early spring to return valuable organic matter to the soil.
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD Members may now renew their membership for 2015 at the AGM on the 27th November. The current cost of membership is £6 per household. This may increase after the AGM. The AGM and Awards evening commences at 7pm on the 27th November. Please arrive early, as this is a very popular event. Please also speak to Sylvia Carter if you are able to act as a Collector early in the New Year. Alternatively you can speak to Sylvia on 01323 891954. The Society is also looking for financial sponsors for its classes in the main Horticultural Show in August 2015. The cost of sponsorship is £10 per class. Seaford Kurlers WHAT’S ON IN NOV? We have had quite a few new members who seem to be enjoying the sport and their new social life. Our 2014 Annual General Meeting at the Leisure Centre resulted in a change in the committee members. A number of members have done Trojan work for the club and now feel that a change is needed. The members at the AGM were unanimous in their thanks to the retirees. The changes to the committee will give us all a chance to look at other aspects of the club and bring new ideas. My thanks go to all concerned. The winner of this year’s Bob Matthews Achievement Cup is still to be decided by the membership and will be announced in the December edition of Seaford Scene. Some of our Kurlers demonstrated the sport at the Hillcrest Centre Newhaven when the Meridian Senior’s forum hosted the Older Peoples’ Day. The Seaford Seniors’ Forum hosted a similar event for the same reason on Monday 27th October, 2014 at the Baptist Church. Our next event is our Annual Christmas Lunch. Last year’s venue at The Moorings was a great success and we are returning there on the 9th December, 2014. Menu, service and price are all great. We shall be transported there by ESDA coach services. Their coaching facilities are very good – especially for anyone with a disability. Wishing everyone good luck for the winter weather. Let’s hope we don’t have extreme conditions! Seaford Kurlers meet every Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm at the Downs Leisure Centre. Annual membership is £5 and weekly subs are £2.50.
