Welcome Welcome to the November issue of Seaford Scene. Well, summer certainly seems like a distant memory, autumn has settled in and winter is knocking at the door. The nights are getting longer and the temperatures are dropping, but don’t let that get you down! Seaford Scene is here to cheer you up and get you out and about. This month’s issue has a certain ‘arty feel’ with the first Open Art Exhibition in Seaford. Why not head over to the Crypt Gallery and take a look at all the entries? You may even know some of the artists and could be inspired to pick up a paintbrush yourself! See page 97 for details. Local artist Andrew Dandridge will also be exhibiting new work, see page 22 and there are lots of Christmas arts and crafts markets, stalls and open houses this month - a perfect opportunity for you to buy your Christmas presents, see ‘What’s On’ page 96 to 102. Oh, and remember, remember, the 5th of November. Take care and enjoy...

THE BASE Live band open air evenT On the 9th September, The Base held a very successful open-air music event at The Salts Rec in Seaford. Hundreds of people turned out to see local bands performing live and they danced the evening away to the music from ‘Red Emperor’, ‘Full House’, ‘Juno’ and The Riffz! The weather attempted to put a dampener on things but to no avail. The bands were too good and the crowds were too busy enjoying themselves to care. The whole event was sponsored by local businesses that came out to support the project and without whom the open event may well not have been as big as a success as it was!

The base would like to sincerely thank all of the local businesses for the contributions they made to the event: Buckle-Up, G W Ironworks, Brooklyn Motors, Ambers Florist, V R Flowers Furniture, Brian Huntley Builders, CRB Contractors, Philip Mann, W F Coote, Mr Ian Glover, Cleankill Ltd, Pegasus Scaffolding, Sussex Tile Centre, Peacehaven Lodge of Instruction, C W Blunt,The Round Table, The Royal Society of St George, Sainsbury’s Newhaven, Bonners Eastbourne, Seaford Scene, Seaford Gazette, Seahaven FM 96.3, Tansleys and Sussex Signs. Event support was provided by The Round Table, Seaford Baptist Church, Seaford Town Council, Sussex Police, Interforce Training Services Ltd and the Seaford Life Guards. We would also like to thank Adam Briggs and Sussex Events for their help with the stage and sound production expertise. The Base committee are looking forward to its next event! DIRECTOR REVEALS SOURCE OF HIS INSPIRATION Blessed with a lovely late summer evening and a gifted speaker in the form of the director Nigel Cole, Seaford Community Cinema launched with a sold-out house on Friday 21st September. Wine and conversation flowed as the audience gathered for the gala opening at the Barn Theatre. Local charities and organisations were represented and guests also included the Mayor Linda Wallraven and MP Norman Baker. The audience gathered to enjoy the film ‘All In Good Time’ directed by Nigel Cole (‘Made In Dagenham’, ‘Calendar Girls’) and were treated to refreshments organised by the committee before taking their seats. The warmly scripted bittersweet comedy about an Asian family living in Bolton was a great success and was followed by a lively question and answer session with Cole, who shared insights into his work and life. It was during the Q&A session that Cole talked about his close relationship with his mother and how this has affected his work, which is replete with admirably strong women role models from the members of the WI in Calendar Girls to the working-mother strike leaders of Made in Dagenham. He told the audience that it was probably watching his mother educate herself to degree level during his childhood and emerge as a professional that lies at the heart of his fascination with women’s roles, and the audience confirmed that he also has an uncanny adroitness for portraying them convincingly on film. The next screening on Friday 9th November is ‘Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy’ at 7.30pm followed by ‘A Separation’ on Friday 23rd November. also at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now at www. seafordcinema.org or at Seaford Tourist Office. Membership is also available with the benefit of a £1 discount on all films. Volunteers are encouraged to contact us via the website www. seafordcinema.org.

This year, as the Seahaven Branch of the Royal Airforces Association was not able to organise the annual dinner to commemorate the Battle of Britain, 1940, the local branch of 'The Royal Society of St George' stepped in and made the arrangements. The dinner took place on Saturday 22nd September at the Seaford Head Golf Club and was attended by members and friends of both organisations. An address about the Battle of Britain was given by Squadron Leader Graham Laurie MVO RAF(Rtd) who described the battle highlighting not only the bravery and hard work of the pilots but also those on the ground, both from the services and the civilians involved, showing how so many people had a hand in bringing about the victory which then saw the end of Hitler's plans to invade this country. The Squadron Leader, a member of The Royal Society of St George, is a retired RAF pilot who finished his career with the Queen's Flight and was the captain of the aircraft that returned the late Princess of Wales's body from Paris. During the evening the President of the Seahaven Branch, Don Mabey, presented audio equipment to Councillor Anthony White, Seaford's Deputy Mayor, for use by the Seaford Base, which is at the Salts, a scheme to encourage young people to produce and make music. He thanked The Royal Society of St George for the gift and explained how it will be used. Present at the dinner were the Mayor and Mayoress of Telcombe Councillor John Living and Helen Livings as well as the Mayors of Peacehaven and Seaford, Councillor Eileen Russell and her husband Terry, and Councillor Linda Wallraven with her consort Liz Holland. Photo: Anthony White receives the gift for Seaford’s Base from The Royal Society of St George’s branch president, Don Mabey.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Autumn 2012
Welcome to our Autumn 2012 Newsletter, which we hope you will find useful and informative, and which opens this time with a section concerning membership.
SUBSCRIPTIONS/MEMBERSHIP A strong membership base, and the income from the modest annual subscription, is our lifeblood and we would not be able to function without this income. As you may already know, it was agreed at the AGM in March that the membership year from 2013 onwards would be changed to the calendar year January to December to avoid the confusion which has sometimes arisen in recent years. Therefore you are reminded all current memberships expire on 31st December 2012. A renewal form for 2013 is included with this newsletter for your use, and any subscriptions received after 1st October 2012 will automatically be applied for membership to the end of 2013. We hope that all existing and lapsed members will renew or rejoin for a further year. For any queries on the status of your membership, please do not hesitate to contact the Membership Secretary Martin French, on 873946 or martin.french@post.com, who will be happy to advise. The BENEFITS of Membership are as follows:• Your local area can be monitored by a Road Co-ordinator, leading to lower crime rates. • By supplying an email address, you will receive regular emails from NHW which will include Police news and updates of local information. • 4 newsletters per year. • Improved local relations and a sense of community spirit. • Peace of mind that neighbours, even if you don’t know them, have the same values and also wish to see a crime-free area. • A channel to report suspicious issues to the local police and to receive information back from them. • Reduction in premiums on home and contents insurance from most insurance companies. DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Since the Spring 2012 newsletter was issued, we have
12
completed the provision and erection of the 5 new “No Cold Calling Zone” road signs at the entrances to Seaford and Bishopstone. Since its launch, the zone has successfully deterred a number of casual traders and those that have flouted the rules have been dealt with by the police. Unfortunately, one or two companies are still trying to circumvent the rules, but the rules are quite clear and these companies have been warned by Trading Standards they are not welcome in this town. We suggest you always try and use local traders, approved by Check-a-Trader Trading Standards etc. Your Neighbourhood Watch Committee have been represented at the Seaford Fun Day and at the Donkey Derby, where we had a small table and display and answered queries and mustered some new members. We have also attended all the recent police panel meetings and quality days and support the work of the Police and local initiatives where appropriate. We had our first ‘intermediate’ summer newsletter published in Seaford Scene as an alternative means of keeping those without internet access up to date. We are planning on delivering a core of 7000 copies of this newsletter through the deliverer network, and the committee will also be undertaking additional deliveries into groups of roads in Seaford not currently covered, in the expectation of attracting new members and hopefully new volunteer deliverers in those areas. THINK SCHOOL TRAVEL Following a number of ‘near misses’ outside school entrances, two local parents have set up an initiative called “Think School Travel” with the aim of making the journey to and from school as safe as possible. It encourages everyone to ‘Drive Safely, Park Safely, Walk Safely’ and, along with the help of local councillors, has campaigned to have road markings near schools enhanced and made more prominent, new speed restrictions enforced and inconsiderate parking penalised and discouraged.
The campaign was launched on 24th September 2012, and NHW support the venture and wish them every success, as it blends in with our ethos of ‘good citizenship and neighbourliness’. If you require any more information on this good cause, please phone

the organisers, Carol Edwards on 07896 027024 or Elise Holliman on 07762 588335, or go to www. facebook.com/groups/ThinkSchoolTravel. “NO COLD CALLING” ZONE/DOOR NOTICES As mentioned earlier, the “No Cold Calling“ Zone is up and running in Seaford and Bishopstone. If a trader or salesman calls at your door without an appointment, you have the power to ask them to leave and report them to the police if they desist. In addition, if you display a door or window sticker stating you do not want uninvited callers, then that constitutes your request for them to leave and the caller is then committing an offence by knocking on your door or ringing your doorbell. Our Chairman has investigated the provision of suitable stickers, but the cost of production is prohibitive; however, we have decided to print off simple window/door notices in lieu and these are being distributed with the hard copies of the newsletter. We suggest they are positioned inside a nearby window, or encapsulated and stuck outside near your door bell. A small supply of spare copies will be available at the police desk. POLICE PANEL MEETINGS The Police Panel Meetings are open to all residents and one is held in each of the three areas every three months. The next meetings are as follows: West Panel: 17th October, 7pm Baptist Church East Panel: 20th November, 7pm. St Luke’s Church. Central Panel: 5th December, 6pm. 37 Church St. Times and venues are also displayed at the Police
Station, No 37 Church Street, and on the Police website www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments. DELIVERERS MEETING Deliverers are an essential part of the Neighbourhood Watch Association, in that they deliver these Newsletters door to door twice a year. By the time this newsletter is published, we would have held our initial Deliverers’ Meeting on 4th October, where we would have thanked them for the work they do, given short addresses on how the Committee undertakes the work of the Association and had a chance to answer queries etc. If you would like to volunteer as a Deliverer in your road or immediate area and help us in this worthwhile cause, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Seaford’s Silver Band MEMBer Sylvia Lucas celebrates 65 years On Wednesday 12th September, past and present members and friends of the Seaford Silver Band came together to celebrate Sylvia Lucas’s membership of the band for 65 years. Sylvia officially retired from active membership of the band earlier this year and this was marked by making her a Life Vice President of the Band. Sylvia joined the band, of which her father and uncle were members, in 1946. She and her husband, Arthur, started the Youth Band which flourished over many years. She has played cornet
throughout, being Principal Cornet for a period and subsequently using her skill and experience to help and encourage newcomers to the section from a position in the second row. She played with the band during its period of very successful contesting 60 years ago, when it progressed from the 4th to the Championship Sections of the Southern Counties Amateur Band Association, also winning medals in solo and quartet contests with her sister, Valerie. She has made recordings for BBC Radio Brighton, played for a dance in the Hove Engineerium, on the MV Senlac during the 1977 Spithead Royal Review of the Fleet and for a BBC ‘Songs of Praise’ programme, apart from many appearances on Eastbourne Bandstand and at local fêtes and garden parties. Sylvia’s family’s connection with the band continues through her sister Valerie and nephew Paul. In recognition of her achievement and commitment the band presented her with a certificate and an engraved glass goblet. The Seaford Silver Band welcomes new members at its Wednesday evening rehearsals. Please telephone 01323 892424 for further details or visit the band’s website at www.seafordsilverband.co.uk.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

You will find a wide range of stunning jewellery made of silver, precious and semi-precious stones as well as tactile earrings and brooches made from kiln-fired glass. To top this all off there will be hand woven wool scarves and series of unique individual table lamps, each with its own design and combination of woods. Each one is hand made using oak, lime, cherry, hemlock, pines and various red hardwoods. If you are keen to give art as presents (to yourself or others!) there will be paintings in several different media including silk paintings, textile art, ink drawings, acrylics and watercolours. This artwork includes themes depicting local scenes, landscapes of the Sussex coast and rich colourful images of nature. Last but not least we are delighted to have Statta with us this year. Statta sell sweet and savoury vinegars, infused oils, dressings and preserves that are lovingly made in Sussex using the finest ingredients, soft fruits steeped in white wine vinegar to extract the full flavour and colour.
Extra images £20 each. All I need is a clear photo and a few details.

what’s on at the hop? ‘Anomaly’ Kate Sweeney
Saturday 3rd November to Thursday 15th November Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am - 5pm; Sunday 12 noon to 5pm. Closed all day Monday
Anomaly showcases the limited-edition screen prints by Brighton-based contemporary artist Kelly Sweeney. The pieces are illustrative in style and draw from the facets of nature that capture the artists’ attention. Ink is applied to the prints, fusing the practices of printing, painting and drawing together. Recent work has become intricate and ornate, developed using her imagination and obsession with detail to explore visual contradictions and relationships, for example forging the realistic with the fantastical. Included in Anomaly are prints of Kelly’s beloved Staffordshire bull terrier, of which £75 of the sale of each print will be donated to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
‘Winter Collection’ Louise Chavannes Saturday 17th November to Thursday 28th November. Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 5pm; Sunday 12 noon to 5pm; Closed all day Monday. Louise Chavannes, based in Heathfield, East Sussex, is an established watercolour artist who has developed her own style of watercolour painting which blends diffused layered backgrounds with a subtle hint of detail. She takes her inspiration from walks in the nearby countryside and also from the memories of the Northumberland countryside where she grew up. Louise’s latest collection, featuring her local woodland countryside, aims to evoke a sense of place using the emotional effect of pigment and textures. Louise won the much-coveted St. Cuthbert’s Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) Competition in February 2011 with a picture entitled ‘Woodland in Snow.’ She has also been shortlisted for The Sunday Times watercolour award where selected artists were shown in the Mall Galleries. Seaford artist Andrew Dandridge exhibits new work Andrew Dandridge, one of the South’s most successful artists, is holding his 21st One Man Exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the Cuckmere Barns, at The English Wine Centre near Alfriston. Andrew Dandridge is best known for his paintings of the Sussex countryside and the Downs that dominate this part of the south coast. Many will recognise familiar landmarks and vistas depicted in his work and will have sent or received greetings cards taken from his paintings. Well, once again, despite the challenging year we have all experienced, he will be exhibiting his latest collection of works at the English Wine Centre near Alfriston.
This new collection represents many months and countless hours of painstaking work from the hand of a true perfectionist. Most of the paintings will be watercolours but among them will be some oil paintings. Subjects will range from familiar downland footpaths to dramatic winter scenes and seascapes. Firmly established as one of the South’s most popular and well-known landscape artists, sales are now approaching 4000 original paintings. As his exhibitions are always very well attended it pays to get there early because, with a queue at the door, an eager following snaps up paintings.

Eric Slater, Seaford artist The colour woodcuts of Eric Slater, a Seaford artist who died 50 years ago, have proved so popular at the Towner in Eastbourne that the gallery has decided to produce two limited edition prints of his work. One shows the coastguard cottages at Cuckmere Haven in 1930 (below) . The other, made a year earlier, is called ‘Rough Sea’ (bottom).
The Rude Mechanical Theatre Co Presents at
The Barn Theatre, Seaford c
Thurs 15th Nov at 7.30pm A brand new comedy about love and marriage in the late 18thC.
Writer James Trollope, who has been researching the artist’s life, believes it’s a view from Splash Point towards the Cliffs of Seaford Head. “Although erosion has changed the shape of the cliffs, I found an old photo which almost exactly matches Slater’s scene,” he said. The Towner’s high-quality reproduction prints are limited to a run of 250 and are the same size as the originals. The larger ‘Rough Sea’ (13ins by 16ins) costs £125 and the slightly smaller ‘Coastguard Station’ (9ins by 13ins) is priced at £95. Both are on sale at the Towner where the Slater show continues until November 11th. Cards are also available and James Trollope hopes to produce a book to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Eric Slater’s death next year. The artist lived in East Albany Road between 1929 and 1963 and is buried at Seaford cemetery.

Shared Exhibition with Lindy Dunbar 6th - 11th October, Crypt Gallery, Seaford
The Crypt Gallery in Church Street, Seaford was abuzz on Saturday 6th October, as an all too short exhibition of six local artists opened. Lindy Dunbar, who has exhibited all over Sussex and at London galleries, showed downland landscapes represented as billowing sweeps of lemon yellow and grey spiked with white to represent the chalk, and nudes often executed in barely-there rosy pastels and demonstrating the depiction of movement that make her work so special and that is seen particularly well in Trapeze Duo. “The couple were practising in front of me. It’s quite hard to capture the essence of what’s there but it is really exciting,” she says. “Movement is what most excites me, and the sense of life. Even with a landscape I like to think of things changing in front of you.” First-time exhibitor Sarah Gregson brought freshness to what can be hackneyed portrayals of local beauty spots. Hockneyesque in her approach to vibrant colour, her interpretations of the cliffs and South Downs are uniquely her own as steepness is exaggerated and cliff edges foreshortened to represent a vista that your mind’s eye might conjure up but that a camera could never capture. Of eight pictures on display, five bore red ‘sold’ stickers by the end of the first day. Former art teacher Kathlyn Thornburrow uses oil on canvas paper or sugar paper to paint vibrant representations of the Downs in all weathers and moods, along with nudes, some in pastels. In complete contrast were Wallace Street’s delicate watercolours and

I particularly liked the eponymous Coastguard Cottages at Cuckmere Haven pictured in a wintery, strangely sharp light that gives a pleasingly frosty effect. Sheena Bourne explored the girders and ornate ironwork on Eastbourne Pier, cladding it in vibrant pinks, greens and blues while Lorus Maver offered a broad spectrum of work, from larger than life-size watercolours of daisies and poppies and a seascape called Wrath of the Gods – a tumult of forcefully tumbling indigo and purple waves crested with a light-filled lacy froth of spume – to the striking Asian Sensation, a portrait painted in small cubes of colour, the face only emerging as you stand well away from it, but never being in sharp focus, giving the impression that the woman remains locked in a private world of her own. Another relative newcomer was Richard Walsh, who combines a great eye for a good photograph with use of electronic doctoring to turn his photos into what the eye tells the brain it sees but the camera lens cannot capture, so cherry and almond trees are a fuzz of bright colour and are given a deep perspective that draws the eye into the composition. He assures me that no trickery was involved, however, in capturing a practically monochrome picture of Brighton Pier and beach lit by one small red umbrella. “I just got lucky.” So did we. The Rotary Club of Seaford The Rotary Club of Seaford, famous locally for its Father Christmas Sleigh Collection, has announced a total of almost £2,500 raised this soggy summer from monthly Car Boot, Craft and Produce Markets. This was despite one of the wettest summers on record. Yet only once was the Club forced to call off an event – in July, if you please, when rain simply gushed down on the chosen day. However, September wound up the series of six markets at the Martello Fields (or five if you don’t include the one that never got started!) with a nice, dry morning. And everything came together. Dozens of car boot stallholders turned up with a fair sprinkling of produce sellers and also some superb examples of local craft manufacturers. The fast-food specialist did his best-ever business in Seaford this year, the bouncy castle was quite busy with the kids and even the ice-cream man sold a few cornets. Not that the sun actually shone for long. But the big bonus was Seaford’s Mr Music Man, Chris

Foster, whose karaoke-cum-busker style had punters and vendors alike dancing down the aisles and singing along. Finally Rotary was able to provide him with a stage once more - after previous technical problems – thanks to Seaford Lifeguards generously providing their electricity generator to power Chris’s music machines and backing tracks. The next series of six markets starts on Sundays in April 2013 at 7.30am for sellers, 9am for buyers, finishing 1pm in the Seaford Martello Fields. Dates are 21st April, 19th May, 16th June, 14th July, 11th August, and 8 September. All proceeds go to local charitable causes. Thanks also to all who helped us with our recent Grand Raffle, both Rotarians & friends. Thanks also to Morrisons for hosting this annual major money-raising venture. Our Flagship Christmas Sleigh Collections with Santa are coming next month; first collection will be Saturday 1st December between 10am and 1pm in Broad Street. The first evening collection will be between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Monday 3rd December. Details will be published next month.

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE RISES (FOR SOME) From 1st October 2012 the national minimum wage for qualifying workers aged 21 years and over rose from £6.08 to £6.19. Whilst this is the most commonly thought of, there are different rates of minimum wage for four categories of worker, the above only being the first. We also have: • the development rate, which applies to workers aged between 18 and 20 inclusive (which has remained at £4.98); • the young workers rate, which applies to workers aged under 18 but above the compulsory school age and who are not apprentices (which has remained at £3.68); and • the apprenticeship rate which applies to apprentices under 19 years of age, or those ages 19 and over but in the first year of their apprenticeship (which has risen from £2.60 to £2.65). There are lots of different classes of worker, and categories of people who do or do not qualify for the national minimum wage. One interesting one is regarding family workers. Where a worker lives in their employer’s family home, are not charged for food or accommodation, and are genuinely treated as part of the family in respect of the provision of
accommodation and meals, and the sharing of things such as household chores and leisure activities, they will not qualify for the national minimum wage. Perhaps even more interesting, is the fact that family members themselves who live and work at home, are also exempt from the national minimum wage if they share in the tasks and activities of the family. This means that the minimum wage does not need to be paid to workers who participate in the running of the family business, provided that they are family members and live in the family home! For those people aged between 18 and 24 who are taking up the government’s “start-ups loans scheme” intended to help them to set up their own businesses, perhaps this is the solution they need to boost their fledgling endeavour by employing mum, dad, or even siblings as cheap labour. Alternatively of course, this could be the solution mum or dad need to get those youthful family member “employees” to finally flee the nest…! Award-Winning Children’s Author Pens New Monster Tale Award-Winning Children’s Author, Giles Paley-Phillips, has just seen the release of his new book ‘Tamara Small and the Monsters’ Ball’. Giles, from Seaford, East Sussex, wrote the book about a little girl called Tamara Small who, while lying awake in bed, hears a noise outside her room. Suddenly she is whisked away by a hairy monster! Luckily it is just the monsters from her neighbourhood inviting her to their annual ball. The rhyming text and colourful illustrations really set this book out as an excellent choice for children, whatever time of year, and it is receiving a huge amount of praise from critics, The Guardian’s Julia Eccleshare called it “A beautiful and progressive picture book” and others have likened it to ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs, but with monsters!

Seaford Bowling Club Seaford Bowling Club are coming to the end of a very successful season. It was our centenary year, celebrated in many different ways but firstly the club held a Jubilee drive, where all the members were asked to wear red, white and blue, which turned out to be a very sociable afternoon. Perhaps the highlights for the season were: having a new centenary year flag, all members being given new shirts with the centenary year and club badge embroidered on them, and a visit and match against the Royal Hospital, Chelsea Pensioners Team. The club house had some refurbishment work in the men's and ladies changing rooms to the delight of the members. Our closing drive took place on Wednesday 26th September at 2pm and included the handing over of a cheque to Mrs Janet White (below) for £1,226.94 to our sponsored charity, the St James’s Trust. Arthur Feist, Chairman and Mens Captain and Gay Byrne, who was then the Ladies Captain, chose this charity as their main fund-raising campaign, to which all the members have contributed over the season.

Running Commentary... By the time you read this article I will have run my last ever marathon. It’s not that I don’t enjoy them any more… I’m just happy to leave the family tradition of running marathons in the more-than-capable hands (or should that be feet) of my daughter, Claire, while I focus on more shorter races. The 160 marathons and ultras that I’ve done have all been full of incredible experiences, like the time I ran 145 miles along the Grand Union Canal in 39 hours. There were also a few painful moments, such as getting badly lost on the Salisbury Plain Marathon when the temperature soared above 100 degrees, and the most bizarre run, I suppose, was the Greenwich Foot Tunnel Marathon which began at 2am one Sunday morning and involved running back and forth under the River Thames fifty-six times. Marathons are amazing. They thrill the soul like no other race and each one leaves you with indelible memories. On reflection, the remarkable camaraderie that exists amongst fellow marathon runners was probably another reason why I ran so many. Thankfully, a similar level of friendship and shared enjoyment is present in the wide range of competitive

races in the Sussex Road Racing Grand Prix. Half of those events are 10km races, and it’s this distance which I think is so important to runners, whatever their preferred length of race. It is certainly an attainable target for newcomers to our sport while for seasoned athletes, it is the ideal distance to base one’s training around because a runner’s speed evolves from shortdistance running. A forty-minute training run, for instance, could include perhaps four or five occasions when you run at a slightly faster pace for about 200 metres. Gradually, the faster pace becomes your normal pace, and if done regularly, will make you a stronger and faster runner. There is still the need to follow up a faster training run with a slower run the next time you go out to avoid running on tired legs. Don’t aim to be a faster runner too soon as over-eagerness and over-confidence can easily lead to an injury. Some runners may have used the distance between street lamp-posts to alternate their walking and running when they first took up running. Those same posts could be used again as you explore different speeds during a training run. Another way to develop greater speed is to enter races. A good exponent of this is Brighton runner, Terry Avey of Phoenix AC, who does only nominal training but enters up to 40 races a year. As a result, he continues to record fast times in everything from 5kms to half marathons. Stamina can also be developed through short distance running just by doing more of your running off road, or more enjoyably, by entering cross-country races because the soft grass, mud or gravel surfaces require greater effort than running on tarmac or concrete to maintain the same speed. Two races in Sussex in November that would be good for speed and stamina are the Brighton 10km on the 11th and the Warren Hill Cross Country race (a five-miler near Beachy Head) on the 18th. Both events are on the Sussex Races website. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

By the time you read this, we will be back to GMT and the very dark evenings. Oh how I have memories of going to school in the dark and having the lights on all day. I do not like it. Whatever the light level, Seaford Kurlers will be at the Downs Leisure Centre to welcome our members and newcomers. Nothing puts us off our weekly get together. I am writing this whilst still in October due to the date for articles to be in to Fran for publication. We are still to have our AGM and we will be in the last couple of weeks of our in-house knockout tournament. I will also be able to report in the issue the recipient of the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup. Writing these articles each month seems to bring home to me that this year has gone very fast – so fast that I have not registered a lovely hot summer. Did I go to sleep at the wrong time? This does of course mean that we have been spared the water companies’ annual whinge about turning off taps after a week of sunshine. We have our annual visit to the Brighton Ice Show to look forward to on the 23rd November, 2012. Once again we will be taken there in comfort by an ESDA coach. Then in December we will have our annual Christmas Lunch at The Drove. We meet every Tuesday at 2.00pm until 4.00pm at the Downs Leisure Centre. Our annual membership fee is £5 and our weekly fee is £2.50. We also belong to ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). You do not have to be the ‘sporty type’ to enjoy our game. We are also able to cater for people that have mobility difficulties. Apart from the sporting aspect of our club, we have quite an active social side. Inner Wheel Club of Seaford This ladie’s club with 50 members must be one of the oldest in Seaford as we will be celebrating our 65th birthday this year. It was formed by wives of Seaford Rotarians and now has members from both Seaford Rotary Clubs. We are members of the British Association and also the International Association of Inner Wheel Clubs. Each year we send our president to a conference where new rules are discussed as well as being given the opportunity of hearing inspiring speakers. Every four years we send delegates to attend the world conference held in countries worldwide. The Objects of the Inner Wheel are: 1) To promote true friendship. 2) To encourage the ideals of personal service. 3) To foster international understanding. The club is run by an executive committee and subcommittees which cover fund-raising and catering, overseas and social arrangements. We run fund-raising events for charities which support local deserving causes as well as National and Overseas appeals. We follow the Rotary ideals when considering our approach to charitable work and when generally helping the community. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. SEAFORD SUCCESS STORY
JUST FOR YOU
Just For You Ladies lingerie celebrate 20 years
TO CELEBRATE OUR 20th BIRTHDAY
It was the year 1992. Colliholes, the small department store on Clinton Place, was in the process of closing. Janet Hamill (owner of Just For You) had been working in the lingerie department in the store. “Ladies were coming in crying, saying ‘where will I be able to buy my underwear? I've been coming here for 50 years!’ ”
Come in for our ‘BRA FITTING FORTNIGHT’
That's when ‘Just For You’was born! Originally opening in 'The High', a small parade of shops (now The Boot pub), Just For You started very small expanding the following year and moving to High Street, then on to Broad Street, and now, still in Broad Street but over the road, in their premises for the last 6 years.

Now in their 20th year, they are proud that they have a fantastic reputation for service and expertise. “We have a fantastic selection of lingerie, classic underwear, nightwear and hosiery, and can usually help most customers who come in”, explained Lucy Hamill, daugher of Janet and current manager of ‘Just for You’.
MCBdisco
Thanks to their ability to 'serve' most ladies, Just For You has remained successful in these difficult times. “We enjoy our job and get a great amount of satisfaction from seeing customers leave, having had an ‘old fashioned’ and enjoyable shopping experience!

Our November/Christmas lecture will be with Alan Morgan, who will talk on the subject “50 years Cruising and Sailing”. Alan is a very well-known expert on both subjects. Amongst his other skills are boat designing. Alan’s talk will be followed by our Christmas tea to round off this year’s successful season. I wish to thank you all for your support. It’s like seeing old friends every time. The talk is on Tuesday 6th November at St Peter’s Church Hall (or Church depending on numbers) and will start at 2.30pm.Tea will follow all for the price of £5. This of course is still for church funds - a medieval church needs constant attention. Special thanks to the group of ladies who do the teas, to Stephen Newberry and his merry band in their office in Church Street and to this magazine for printing the articles. Happy Christmas to you all and see you next year. Shirley Linsell

THE NEW-LOOK CAFÉ SEVEN! Café Seven on Clinton Place has had a face-lift! Gone are the magnolia walls, lino flooring, lofty ceilings and fluorescent lights. Instead there’s a bright, contemporary interior with wooden flooring, clean white walls and soft low lighting. Carefully chosen modern chairs and tables fill the café and tasteful coffee-shop-style pictures adorn the walls whilst the new bright and friendly menu at the rear of the cafe does everything to make your taste buds tickle! Owners Helen and Shaun Edmeads decided it was time to freshen the place up in response to customers’ feedback who, aside from raving about the delicious food, felt that the place needed cheering up. As well as keeping their loyal customers happy, Helen and Shaun are now keen to attract more customers and feel that the new contemporary look has created a bright and welcoming place where good food can be enjoyed from breakfasts through to afternoon tea and cake! The new-style menu includes breakfasts full, English, mega and vegetarian - as well as hot lunches including
staff in their new uniforms were very polite and helpful and they made me feel most welcome. I wished I I could have stayed longer to enjoy some afternoon tea and cake whilst reading the paper on the sofa in the window, but sadly work beckoned. It was clear that both Helen and Shaun are very happy and proud of what they have achieved at the cafe, and feel it was definitely a worthwhile investment. I agree, - I think they’ve got it just right! Look out for free wi-fi at Café Seven, coming soon. Fran Tegg

home-made soup of the day and daily specials such as honey and mustard chicken or chilli con carne. All the favourites such as lasagne with garlic bread, breaded plaice and chips, sausage and mash are available every day along with sandwiches, jacket potatoes and the new paninis, all with a variety of mouth-watering fillings. On my visit I had the lasagne with salad and garlic bread, which was very enjoyable, and a warming cappuccino with a special ‘café seven’ chocolate motif on the top - you should try one! The café was buzzing when I stopped for lunch but the atmosphere still felt very relaxed and comfortable. The

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum Shepherds Crook The South Downs surrounding Seaford would have once been populated by thousands of sheep (‘ship’ in the old Sussex dialect) and each flock would have a shepherd to look after them. This was a solitary occupation and a shepherd would be used to braving extremes of weather. Shepherds would carry a crook in order to catch a sheep around the ankle. It used to be said that you could tell where a shepherd came from by looking at the design of his crook. Many Sussex crooks were made at Pyecombe. The metal part of the crook was called a barrel. The crook at Seaford Museum is on display next to a figure representing the last Seaford shepherd, Reuben Russell, whose flock roamed Seaford Head.

A Short Story
Rush Hour By Alan Morton
Wairarapa, New Zealand – Sometime in the past 50 years. Digby Slattery leaned on the five-bar gate at the end of the long stony track that lead up to his farm some 2kms behind where he was now standing. Dressed in a faded pair of blue work dungarees and a well-worn red checked shirt, his eyes closed as he basked in the warmth of the late summer sun. They hadn’t seen much in the way of rain for a good few weeks, and the golden brown hills and the dusty unmetalled road that ran past the gate reflected the lack of precipitation. He had been stood there, one foot resting on the lower bar of the gate, for nearly half an hour, chewing on a stem of grass and contemplating his next move. The only sound had been that of skylarks singing over the paddocks on the far side of the road, but gradually his peace was being interrupted by a scuffing along the road to his right. Digby shifted his hat back on his head and looked along the fence line towards the approaching stranger and gave him the once over. He was dressed in a tatty pair of shorts, a distressed looking bush shirt and a drover’s hat that had seen better days; a small leather rucksack was slung over his shoulder. When he saw Digby he too tilted his hat back on his head. “G’day,” he said. Digby nodded his head by way of a response, but a questioning look in his eyes invited some explanation as to why someone was walking this cross-country back road to Martinborough. “Betsy gave up on me a few Ks back,” was the reply, as though this explained all. In due course Digby learned that Betsy was a Holden ute of considerable vintage that had spluttered to a halt earlier in the day and, despite the best efforts of her owner, she was stubbornly refusing to respond to any attempt to rectify the fault. The couple swapped a few auto-related observations before Digby offered to “take a look”. “Much appreciated; Brian Jackson… friends call me Jacko,” and he thrust a hand in Digby’s direction, who responded with a firm handshake. There was a long silence as the two men perused the landscape. “Looking for some work?” queried Digby, finally.
66
“Well, yes I guess so; I need to get Betsy sorted. I could hang around a day or two while I get her fixed up.” There was a further long pause while the couple contemplated nothing in particular. “Done any fencing?” queried Digby, lighting a smoke. “Yeah, no worries.” “Put in strainers? There’s some post and wire that needs attending over in the back blocks,” he added, indicating over his shoulder. “No probs,” replied Jacko. “There’s a small stretch need some posts putting in as well,” added Digby. “Got a postdriver?” “Yeah, got one that hitches up to the Massey Ferguson.” “Good as gold,” replied Jacko. “Good with sheep?” asked Digby almost as an afterthought. “Done a bit,” said Jacko, accepting a light from the end of Digby’s smoke. “I’ve got a few hoggets gone walkabout up in the hills; could do with a hand rounding ’em up. Any good on a horse?” “Born in the saddle,” replied Jacko, although the truth was he hadn’t done any equine work for a good few years. “Got some supplejack and bush-lawyer I could do with a hand in cutting back and burning… and a bit of gorse work as well,” continued Digby. “Sounds like more than a day or two’s work there,” observed Jacko. “Could well be,” agreed Digby. There was yet another long pause before Digby spoke again, “Can’t offer you too much in the way of notes, but what there is would be cash in hand… could help you get Betsy fixed up for sure… There’s a little bach where you could lay your head, and you’d be good for three meals a day, no worries; the wife’s worth her weight in the kitchen.” “Sounds good to me,” replied Jacko, and Digby pushed the gate open slightly so that Jacko could join him on the other side. “We could take the Massey down a bit later on and tow Betsy back,” suggested Digby. “Sweet as,” responded Jacko as he snatched at a length of long grass and put the stem in his mouth. Jacko leaned forward, resting his forearms on the gate and lifted a foot to sit on the bottom bar. “When do I start?” “You already have,” replied Digby, and he closed his eyes once again and turned his face to bask in the late afternoon sun.

Seaford Museum General Store Reopens After many months of work by several volunteers at Seaford Museum, the Victorian / Edwardian ‘General Store’ has been completely refurbished and is back on view. The floor was re-laid, a lot of furniture carpentry renewed and hundreds of artefacts cleaned and rearranged. The two dummy windows, which were originally curtained as they looked onto the brick wall of the moat, now have Seaford scenes painted by local amateur artist, Diana Barrett. The photograph shows her in her studio putting the finishing touches to the two scenes. As summer time ended on Sunday, 28th October, the Museum has now reverted to the winter opening times of Sundays and Bank Holidays only, from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm. MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD
All members are invited to attend the Society Annual General Meeting on Thursday 29th November. The meeting is again being held in the St. Leonard’s Church Hall at 7pm. The evening will comprise annual reports, awards, elections, grand raffle and details of programme for 2013. Full refreshments will be available during the evening.
NOVEMBER checklist
3 Begin pruning vines once all the leaves have fallen. Plant new
vines between now and the end of the year. Do not add too much manure as vines like to grow on poor soil. 3 Cover tender plants still outdoors with cloches, hessian or fleece. 3 Check bulbs, corms or tubers in winter storage. Remove any that are showing signs of rot or disease. 3 Plant any remaining bulbs, tulips or hyacinth without delay. 3 If weather is fine give the lawn a final cut, clean and store the mower.

August. Both started to go over by early September with smaller green fruits ripening until the end of the month. Final pickings were made the first week in October. My conclusion was that both plants whether grafted or seed sown were identical throughout the season. The total yield was about the same, so was the flavour. The only difference was that the seed sown Shirley’s cost £1.50 each and Sutton’s Elegance cost £4.99 each! I think I’ll stick to the traditional plants for a few more years and see how things develop.

ou may remember that back in February of this year I wrote about the increasing number of “grafted vegetable plants” being sold by garden centres and seed companies. I said I would trial some and report back. On the 14th May I potted up my tomatoes for this season. These included Sutton Seeds grafted tomato “Elegance” obtained from a local garden centre and seed sown tomato “Shirley” purchased from my usual plant nursery. All plants were approximately 8 inches in height. They were each planted into 13.5 inch pots of multipurpose compost with some of my “special additives” and placed alongside each other in the shaded greenhouse. All tomatoes were watered and fed at the same time. Each set five trusses and were pinched out when they reached the greenhouse roof. Both types produced early fruit by the end of July and a full harvest was made every few days by the end of
COMPOST
We are all encouraged to recycle everything these days and this is a most important item for gardeners. Recycling or ‘composting’ is possible even in the smallest of gardens. The end product or ‘black gold’ is a superb material for enhancing the productivity of your garden and it is free! It is now at the later part of the year in the garden and we are busy tidying up and collecting plant material. Don’t take the easy way out and take it to the local tip - just give it a chance and let nature do its job. There are many types of compost bins or containers so visit your local garden centre and choose one that suits your requirements. A common question is what goes on the compost heap? Suitable items are anything that will rot down reasonably quickly. This includes plant leaves, stems, soft vegetation, grass cuttings, uncooked kitchen peelings, shredded newspaper, crushed eggshells, tea bags, nettles and comfrey. Things to avoid are any cooked items, thick or twiggy branches and diseased plants. You can also use some ‘compost activator’ to speed up the decomposition process. Finally the heap should be turned every few months. By turning I mean empty the bin completely then put it all back in the bin again. This action admits air into the mixture which again aids the whole process. Make 2013 the year of the compost heap - you won’t regret it!

In autumn and winter, we can concentrate on cleaning gardening tools and tidying up our plots, sheds and greenhouses. Washing down paths and patios is a good idea to stop mildew etc forming, which can be a safety hazard. Clear fallen leaves and put them on the compost heap or into an open cage if possible, as they will rot down easier that way. Leave for a year if possible as leaves rot slower than weeds etc. Give lawns a once over with an aerator and apply an autumn fertiliser. Sap is slower to rise in tree and shrubs etc now, so it is a good time to finish pruning. Roses can be taken back by one third. Protect eyes as bits can easily fly about, plus good strong gloves should be worn to protect hands and fingers. Some very good advice which was appreciated by us all. He also showed a few slides of pruning horrors he had spotted on his travels! Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 28th November at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (please use the entrance at the side, opposite Tesco). The evening will begin at 7.30pm and Dr Anthony William Mace will speak on cacti and succulents. Please feel free to come along either as a visitor for £2 or to join for a fee of £10.

High Sheriff visits Exchange garden Seaford’s flourishing Exchange community garden in the Crouch was delighted to receive a visit from the High Sheriff of East Sussex, David Allam, last month. Mr Allam, who was accompanied by Kevin Richmond, Chief Executive of Sussex Community Foundation, was there on what was an otherwise typical morning for the garden’s volunteer members, so he saw people from all walks of life, able bodied and those with impairments and learning difficulties working together to pick the last of the summer’s and autumn’s crops including soft fruit, tomatoes, beans, peppers, chillies and aubergines, check remaining crops of beetroot, brassicas, carrots and onions, make cuttings to propagate for the coming year, and generally tend the garden. They also heard how we plan collectively so as to achieve a consensus for the forward development of the garden. Indeed, approaching the garden that morning involved a bit of an obstacle course as the ground was being prepared by Robert and his team for the last of the paving that will make the site so much more accessible

for wheelchair users, and will benefit all who are visiting our new classroom at the rear. We took advantage of the earth being up to install pipework to improve our ability to irrigate the vegetable areas with soaker hoses and low-level watering. This will save on water consumption as well as reduce the distances that watering cans have to be carried – much appreciated by those with bad backs. We would like to thank all of you who visited us on Wednesday and Saturday mornings during the summer to buy our organic produce or just to say hello. It was great to see so many new faces and we will be repeating the exercise next summer. For now, though, we are reverting to our normal 9.30am to 12.30pm Wednesday morning openings and hope to see you then. Meanwhile, at the time of writing we are busy potting up white hyacinth and tete-a-tete daffodil bulbs ready for Christmas and early spring displays, and as this month starts will be potting up tulips for March and April. Lastly, our long-awaited classroom is nearly here and, while we have lots of ideas of our own, we invite suggestions for its use, so please come in. We’d love to hear from you. Seaford Musical Theatre Review
We Built This City Friday 14th September saw the penultimate night of the Barn Theatre’s fun-filled, original rock ‘n’ roll production ‘We Built This City’ where the cast should be congratulated on their real sense of community spirit, energy and enthusiasm. Director Paula Woolven’s musical commentary on the history of rock starts with a dramatic monologue by Alderman Goode (John Walsh) in which the Hard Rocker sets the scene of a futuristic city where rock music is almost a form of religion and all other music is banned from this place of rock-worship. Even to mention such a name as Lady Gaga is seen as blasphemy! It’s not all serious though. Alderman cleverly includes some local humour in his quip, “maybe KFC in Newhaven just ran out of chicken” when explaining the downfall of rock in contemporary society. Alderman calls a council meeting which appears to be a regular occurrence amongst the rock-devotees who we find are categorised into different sub-groups which are: The Old Timers, the Glam Rockers, the Hard Rockers, the Punk Rockers, the Folk Rockers and the Young Rockers. At this meeting, the audience learns that the essence of rock music is under threat from a group called ‘The Fusions’, a band of rebels who believe in the acceptance of all music and want to bring this to the Rockers’ attentions. The production offers a broad selection of iconic, massive rock hits known by many including Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’, Queen’s crowd-pleaser ‘We Will Rock You’, and ‘Rock Around The Clock’ by Bill Haley and The Comets. There is also something for the younger audiences as The Fusions give an enjoyable rendition of more recent electronic-pop chart-topper ‘Telephone’ by Lady Gaga (featuring Beyonce). In addition, the performance of Olly Murs’ pop song ‘Dance with me Tonight’ indicates the stark contrast between the two opposite ends of the music spectrum whilst embodying the key theme of the play; The Rockers’ reluctance in accepting this new form of music worship and The Fusions’ defiance in conforming to The Old Timers’ society.

B. Goode (Rob Willis), whose Johnny Cash-esque singing voice and rhythmic Elvis leg-twist, in my opinion, made him the star of the show. Johnny B. Goode’s sheer musical talent paired with the delightful, tuneful harmonies of Peggy-Sue during the duet of ‘Need You Now’ by American group Lady Antebellum made for a poignant scene. There is trouble amongst the love-struck teenagers, however, when Johnny discovers Peggy-Sue’s association with The Fusions and the part she played in launching a flash mob at the City picnic. Ultimately, Johnny is faced with the challenging decision of upholding the law by turning Peggy-Sue in, and therefore pleasing his father, or supporting the love of his life and sticking by her. In the end, both love and rock music will out. All in all ‘We Built This City’, teamed with the colourful costumes, was an eclectic mix of punk-meets-hippy, fusion-meets-rock, and new-meets-old. The toe-tapping tunes had the audience clapping (and in some cases singing) along and the utter vigour and joy displayed by everyone involved should be widely praised; the band, front of house, behind the scenes, extras and director included (who got up on stage herself at the end of the show and displayed her thespian talent). And I shouldn’t forget one cute little, white-suited, mini-Elvis character who, even though he had no lines, put so much energy into his role that he nearly hit the glasses off his face in a songand-dance number! Emily Strachan
Amid this conflict is a charming love story between Young Rockers Peggy-Sue (Shana Edwards) and Johnny To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk
