Welcome
Welcome to the October issue of Seaford Scene. The nights are drawing in and the warm days of summer are now a distant memory. Time to batten down the hatches and settle in for the winter...but before all of that, there’s still plenty to see and do this month! We feature the Seaford in Bloom 2013 awards on page 62 and the news that the chairman and committee are stepping down - more details on page 4. Seaford and Martello Rotary clubs include their fundraising events and Seaford Natural History Society will get you out and about, as will Bob Eade’s final instalment of “Butterflies of Seaford and the Surrounding Area”. Oh, and don’t forget the clocks go back on Sunday 27th October. Enjoy!

The End of Seaford in Bloom The invited guests at the 2013 Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony, which was held at Dean’s Place, Alfriston on Tuesday 13th August, were shocked by the surprise announcement, at the end of the evening, that Seaford in Bloom is to fold. Due to her failing health, Isabel Stephenson has decided to discontinue as Chairman of Seaford in Bloom and the rest of the Committee are also stepping down. Seaford Town Clerk Sam Shippen delivered the sad news at the end of an enjoyable evening where the various winners of the 2013 Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition were announced and presented with their awards. It was fitting that the Seaford Town Clerk should make the announcement as, over the last twenty years, the Town Clerk has been the main means of communication between Seaford in Bloom and Seaford Town Council. Former Town Clerk Len Fisher, a great friend and supporter of Isabel and Seaford in Bloom, was also present to pay an emotional tribute to the Chairman and her Committee. Sam paid tribute to Isabel and the Committee and started by outlining a brief history, going back to 1992, when the Seaford in Bloom began at a meeting in Seaford Baptist Church Hall. In that year, the first Annual Awards consisted of just three prizes – the cups weren’t included until 1997. The Committee tended to the plants themselves, planting, weeding, tidying up and watering from a bowser that was dragged around the town. Since Seaford in Bloom awarded Peter Tipping and Europlants the supply and maintenance contract for the floral displays in Seaford, the town has never looked back. Everyone present agreed that, this year, the floral displays were better than ever. Sam then outlined plans for the future. The Seaford in Bloom Committee will step down and the balance of funds in the Seaford in Bloom account will be handed over to Seaford Town Council. This should finance the floral displays in the town for at least the next 3 years. Sam hoped that Seaford Town Council would agree to renew the Europlants contract at their September meeting.
4
Volunteers are required to form a new Seaford in Bloom Committee and anyone who is interested should contact Sam. Winners of this year’s Floral Competition Awards should hand the cups back directly to the Town Council in July 2014. The future of the Competition has yet to be decided. Sam finished on a brighter note. “This is a time of celebration for all the tremendous work that Seaford in Bloom has carried out for Seaford over the years. On behalf of all the town’s residents, businesses and Seaford Town Council a big “thank you” to Isabel and the Seaford in Bloom Committee for all of the voluntary work you have tirelessly carried out for more than 20 years”. Former Seaford Town Clerk, Len Fisher, then paid tribute. He felt privileged to say a few words about Seaford in Bloom and Isabel in particular who he has been great friends with since, as Seaford Town Clerk, he first met her in 1996. There have been some lovely times – and recently some sad ones - with Pasta Evenings, Golf Days, Quiz Nights and Soup, Spud & Pud Lunches – including the day when the Church Hall cookers packed up and there were people wandering around town with pockets full of jacket potatoes looking for somewhere to cook them. Len thanked Ashley Stephenson and all of the Committee who have always been behind Isabel and her passion, and was pleased that the Town Council will continue to look after the planting and watering for the next few years. SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB SUppORTiNg ThE LOCAL COMMUNiTY TAveRN iN THe TeNT
Seaford Martello Rotary Club thought long and hard about how it could support the local community while making much needed funds for charity and so came up with the idea for the Tavern in the Tent. Plans were put into place and decisions were made as to what drinks would sell and the quantities required. A well organised, efficient routine was developed for loading, erecting and maintaining the equipment and members had to learn how to pull a pint correctly with the required amount of head on it! Not an easy task for some, but they managed, and the rota for manning the bar was put in place. So all they needed now were some customers – and the sunshine ! This summer the Tavern in the Tent has supported five local events, all of which have been very successful indeed: St Andrews village fête, Bishopstone, Peacehaven Donkey Derby, Armed Forces Day, Fun Day at the Downs Leisure Centre and Seaford Donkey Derby. There are many reasons why this project has been so successful. The relaxed surroundings create an opportunity for Rotarians to talk to the many people who buy their drinks from the Tavern. People start to recognise the organisation and learn about the work that Rotary does, both locally, nationally, and internationally, and in return Rotary is able to communicate with individuals and groups who would benefit from their support either financially or with expertise, advice and hands-on help. The Tavern provides a safe haven for families and friends to sit and enjoy their surroundings and chat – adding to the atmosphere of the day.
10
Although on the surface the Tavern in the Tent seems a simple thing to do it actually takes many, many hours and much man power to provide the service. The club has raised in excess of £3,300 this summer by running the Tavern, all of which will be used for supporting good causes. A good example of this is the food box scheme which the club operates in partnership with local charity WAVES, whereby local families who are struggling to make ends meet are supplied with some basic food items to help them out.
FooD HAMPeR SCHeMe CoNTiNueS FoR FAMiLieS iN SeAFoRD – CAN You HeLP? The Martello Rotary Club of Seaford , in partnership with local charity WAVES, has provided another batch of 8 food hampers for needy families in Seaford.
This project has been ongoing in 2013 and the Club is planning further deliveries later in the year; Waves have distributed the food hampers to families that they were aware of in Seaford who were in need of help during the school holiday period. Rotary raises money for charitable causes, and the Club would like to invite members of the public to consider donating their winter heating allowance to this scheme, where it can make a real difference to local people who need help. If you would like to make a donation, or to get more information about the scheme, just call Jim Austin on 01323 873660, or Reg Dove on 07920 843604. Alternatively you can e-mail on seafordmartellorotaryclub@gmail.com Seaford Martello Rotary Club is always looking to welcome new members who would be prepared to offer a helping hand with our voluntary projects. Rotary members gain such a lot from their involvement with these enterprises – it is fun, you work as a team and meet lots of lovely new people and ultimately you know that you are making a difference. More volunteers are always necessary if we are to ensure that these worthwhile projects happen. The club meets every Monday evening at Seaford Golf Club and if you would like to come along, just call 07775 604912 or email seafordmartellorotary@gmail.com

uNDeRSTANDiNG MeNTAL HeALTH ADDiCTioN (PART 2) What happens in the brain is this: when we first decide not to indulge in an addictive activity, we feel calm; however, there is a structure in the emotional brain, called the amygdala, whose job it is to notice when anything out of the ordinary is happening and raise the alarm if it could mean danger. On this occasion, it notices that we haven’t had our usual cigarette, drink or shopping-channel fix. A sequence of chemical events takes place in the brain, which results in our being flooded with arousing emotional memories of how wonderful it was to smoke, drink or order goods when watching the shopping channel – and so we succumb. Once strong desire is experienced, we recall only expectations of pleasure associated with the addictive activity. This makes our craving powerful, even overwhelming, instead of the very mild physiological discomfort we experienced at the start. But the memories are usually false because, as we know, when we feel we are being deprived of something we want, we exaggerate the joys of it. So we remember being the life and soul of the party and not being sick and having a hangover; we remember the thrill of buying new clothing and not the self-loathing while stuffing it, still in its glossy packaging, at the back of the wardrobe. In other words, the satisfaction is all in our heads. Human Givens practitioners help people change their expectations by relaxing them and then guiding them to visualise the downsides of the addictive activity – such as disabling illness, loss of loved ones, financial hardship, etc, instead of the false memories of fulfilment. When only these more realistic associations come to mind on experiencing a craving, withdrawal symptoms remain mild physiological ones, such as the sensation of gentle butterflies in the stomach or a furry tongue. After a while, if all false memories are rejected and only the fearsome ones are accessed from our emotional memory stores, craving ceases altogether.
their needs more healthily again, such as by starting or resuming social activities (most people with addictive behaviours gradually give less and less time to what they previously valued); facing whatever may have led to the addiction in the first place, such as a troubled marriage or work difficulties, and finding solutions; and learning ways to deal with future stress – or temptation – without relapsing. This will usually involve changing attitudes towards problems or setbacks, learning to see them as challenges that can be coped with; learning to calm down aroused emotions instantly; and being ready to take “emergency action” to distract oneself from temptation, such as going for a walk or calling a friend. When people genuinely realise that they have been hoodwinked into false expectations of pleasure and fulfilment from an addictive activity, they find that they can stop, and not miss it, however long they have been in its thrall. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

BuTTeRFLieS oF SeAFoRD & SuRRouNDiNG AReA with Bob eade october With the summer now just a distant memory and with the hours of daylight getting shorter the butterfly year is almost at an end. On the warmer days there will still be plenty of butterflies flying but many will now be looking rather jaded and worn. Downland species still flying will include the very common Meadow Brown, Small Heath, Small and Large White, Small Copper and in the early part of the month possibly Common Blues. On woodland rides Speckled Wood and Brimstone can also be found most years in reasonable numbers. Brimstone will spend the winter hibernating in dense foliage but the Speckled Wood can overwinter as either a caterpillar or a chrysalis with the adult butterflies dying off as the cold weather arrives. Even this late in the year some of our more familiar garden butterflies can be seen. Small Tortoiseshell, Red

Admiral, Comma and Peacock as well as possibly Painted Lady can often be seen nectaring on late flowering plants as well as feeding on rotting windfall apples and any blackberries still on the bushes. In the early spring this year Small Tortoiseshell were seen in much higher numbers than they have been seen for many years. This is possibly due to favourable conditions last winter where many butterflies hibernated through the worst of the cold. There was also evidence of many migrating into the country in April, boosting the numbers already here. These early butterflies will have bred and the offspring will have emerged in late June and July. These in turn will have produced the butterflies that we will hopefully see flying in October. These butterflies will now hibernate through the winter and can be seen during any warm spell between now and next spring. Red Admirals were until recent years unable to survive our winters. However, this butterfly appears to have changed its behaviour and now seems to make it through to the following spring in large numbers. Peacock and Comma also hibernate throughout the winter, with the former occasionally being seen on warm days throughout the colder months. The Peacock is a particularly handsome butterfly with large eye spots on its wings that are thought to scare off predators. As we ourselves spend the winter keeping warm, a few native butterflies will be hibernating, others will spend the winter as an egg, caterpillar or chrysalis to appear in 2014 to add colour to the countryside and to our lives. I hope you have enjoyed our journey through the butterfly year and that it has inspired some of you to visit the countryside and enjoy both the butterflies and wildlife in general. Remember you can help Sussex butterflies by joining Butterfly Conservation. Running Commentary... After my first marathon (back in 1978) I decided that for any future long run of over 60 minutes it would help if I carried a bottle of water. However, I soon realised that the downside of being able to stay hydrated during long runs was the hassle of carrying the bottle, and it was also upsetting the natural rhythm of my arm movements. My solution was to make and fix a simple string handle to the plastic bottle. It didn’t take away the weight problem but at least I didn’t have to constantly grip the bottle while running although it was still a bit uncomfortable to carry. A few weeks later when rinsing out the bottle before a run I carelessly used very hot water and it began to sag. By the time I had emptied it, the bottle had become a funny crescent shape but it still held water so I took it on my run anyway. Wow, what a difference! Holding it now while running seemed effortless by comparison. I had accidentally invented an ergonomic-friendly runners’ bottle. A few years later, technology appeared to catch up with me and sports shops began selling handled plastic bottles. Had someone seen me running with mine and stolen my idea…? I’ll never know. Thanks to the running boom of the 1980s there have been huge advances in sport technology, making running

easier, more enjoyable, more comfortable and at times, more expensive. No more running in plimsolls or crosstrainers - there are shoe styles to suit every foot type; no more string vests or heavy cotton T-shirts – light-weight wicking material T-shirts keep us warm and dry in the winter and cool and dry in the summer, and no more analogue watches – there are multi-function digital stopwatches, and GPS technology so we don’t get lost… so often. I believe we should always keep an eye on technological advances because amongst the plethora of new ideas there are some that really do make a difference. One example, I am reliably informed, is a decent sports bra – a priority for every lady runner. While I don’t feel the need for portable music systems strapped to my head, arm or waist and stuck in my ears, I do find wearing a small bum bag useful, particularly those with a pocket specially designed to hold the infamous water bottle, thereby creating the much preferred hands free running. What goes in the bottles can be carboloaded, isotonic, hi-tech, mineral-rich pre-race, mid-race or post-race fluids. I know of runners who use a bum bag to hold a car or door key, emergency money, energy gels, plasters, bee sting cream, folded maps and, I can’t think why… a mobile phone! Modern technology has also given runners every colour of tracksters, and, if you’re bold enough to wear it without a bicycle underneath you, lycra clothing. T hen there are bright pink shoelaces to bring a smile to your feet and wrinkled laces that don’t need double knotting. There are baseball caps and cool dude shades to fend off the sun in the summer, while not forgetting fluorescent tops and caps that can be worn for safety on winter evening runs. So, how do you dress for a run or race? Do you pamper yourself with the latest must-haves to really build up the feel-good factor, or perhaps you’re one of that small percentage of runners who go for exhibitionism, (although to look at the torrent of colour as 35,000 marathon runners swarm along the streets of London every April one might have to assume that we can all dress a bit OTT at times). On reflection, I could easily turn my back on all the modern gear and gizmos, but with the exception of comfortable trainers, runners’ padded socks… and a glass of milk after each run. CLuB FiNALS DAY The weather held off for all the finals to be completed over the two days of 7th and 8th September 2013. The Men’s final
We sure have been blessed with some beautiful weather. Long may it continue! Since the last article we have had a really good day at Wave Leisure Paragames event. This is now a yearly event and is sponsored by Sainsbury’s and Wave Leisure. Seaford Kurlers have been involved with the event right from the beginning and we have a small group of stalwart volunteers for all our extra curricular events, who always do us proud. The paragames are always full of very keen competitors and we guide them in the games and referee the matches. I can honestly say that everyone has a great time. This year Wave Leisure presented us with a cheque for £50 as a way of saying ‘thank you’, which was quite a surprise!
was won by Ken Browning (holding the Men’s Finals Cup) with runner-up Alan Farber and the Ladies’ winner was Yvonne Newbold (holding the cup and being congratulated by the runner-up Nuala). Ron Meadwell

ABSOLUTE LASER CLINIC Tattoo Removal Hair Removal We use Q-Switched Lasers which are considered by dermatologists to be the most effective, safe and reliable way to remove unwanted multi-coloured tattoos with consistent predictable results.
How does a tattoo removal laser work?
Q-Switched Lasers that generate a high powered beam of laser light in an extremely short pulse are the most suitable lasers for tattoo removal treatment. The very short pulse of high powered laser light is absorbed by the tattoo ink particles, breaking them down into smaller pieces, enabling your natural immune defences to absorb and disperse the ink. A gradual fading of the tattoo occurs over a series of treatments.
Why live with unwanted hair? Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light systems offer a safe, long-term solution to unwanted, excess hair for both men and women. Treatment is suitable for the face and body, is quick and results can be seen after just a few sessions.
How does light assisted hair removal work?
Light is selectively absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells.
Absolute Skin Clinic offers hours to suit you, including Sundays and late appointments.

CoASTAL CoMMuNiTieS 2150 – WHAT iS YouR viSioN? Seaford Baptist Church Hall is an unlikely venue to hear a presentation from a vineyard. Even the idea of an English vineyard will still seem peculiar to some. As Coastal Communities 2150 is showing, adaptation to long term climate change requires a new public conversation that looks different to anything done before. As both a local resident and the Landscape and Environment Officer for the Rathfinny Estate, Richard James is well placed to be part of that conversation. Coastal Communities 2150 invited Richard to speak at its workshop on Tuesday 3rd September. The invited audience from the Seaford Partnership, Beach User Group and Chamber of Commerce heard presentations on climate change and explored the opportunities and obstacles that climate change will bring over the next century and a half. Speaking from his professional experience of managing the estate near Alfriston, Richard explained the benefits to wine making from rising average temperatures. Rathfinny have designed their business operations to minimise fuel and water consumption and exploit renewable energy sources. Illustrations are an important tool for making adaptation to climate change real for an audience in 2013. The workshop used the 6 posters and handbook that Coastal Communities 2150 has produced. Each poster shows Seaford and the lower Ouse valley with a metre and a half of sea level rise. The map of the valley has been updated to show the potential tidal flooding area and enlarged river. The infrastructure required to protect the lifestyle presently enjoyed by the community is also marked. Artists’ impressions of well know, locations complete the layouts. Another illustrative tool used by the project is its interactive sea level rise visualisation. This free to use computer programme allows you to fly up to Lewes from Seaford Head, pausing and rotating their view to see the effect of sea level rise on an average high spring tide if river and coastal defences are maintained to their current height. The default level shown is equivalent to the high tides on August 22nd and 23rd this year. Sea level rise is predicted to be 1 metre by 2100 but will rise beyond several metres if our warming climate does not
22
stabilise. The visualisation allows sea level to be raised to 5 metres above its present level, showing the impact of centuries of climate change. The effect is dramatic, but by being well informed about climate change communities can plan for its effects. The 6 concepts are not blueprints for planned developments. Coastal Communities 2150 requires the responses of residents of all ages, local businesses, infrastructure providers and decision makers to produce an ambitious but achievable Vision for how life by the coast will need to change between now and 2150. The Vision will be supported by an Action Plan so that the community can begin to take steps towards the Vision immediately. The participants in the workshop were able to make their responses to a short questionnaire during the session. Coastal Communities now wants you to share your vision. You can answer the questionnaire and download the 6 posters and handbook at the Coastal Communities 2150 website. Visit www.cc2150.eu and select the link to the public engagement. The sea level rise visualisation will also be available as a web player from Monday 16th September with a short video explaining how to use it. If you would like to get in touch with Coastal Communities 2150 or would like to hear a presentation from the project then please contact Paul Costelloe on 01903 703 806 or email cc2150@ environment-agency.gov.uk. RoTARY CLuB oF SeAFoRD Gold & Diamond Wedding Anniversaries
In August two of our members and their wives celebrated significant wedding anniversaries. First were Frank and Ivy Thompson. Daughter Dawn recalls “1963 was a memorable year with the great train robbery, JFK’s assassination and the start of the golden years for Frank and Ivy. They dated for 5 years before getting married, and Frank’s job took them to start their married life in Cardiff. Then Frank’s job moved the family down to the south coast where they spent many happy days in Saltdean prior to moving to Seaford in 1983.” Dawn’s main childhood memories are of Frank being away frequently, perhaps to get away from Ivy’s cooking. Dawn remembers well the concrete crumble of the early years, and suggests you never come to dinner when white sauce is on the menu - more recently there has been swamp pudding! The loves in Frank’s life include the computer (his technology skills knock the family out), and Rotary, with which come lots of friends for both Frank and Ivy.” Within days, Derek and Jean Larter had their turn. Derek recalls that on their wedding day in August 1953, his new mother-in-law was heard to say “It’ll never last”. She wasn’t quite right, as on 8 August 2013 the couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Derek is a member of the Vocational Service and Youth Opportunities Committee of the Club. Roger Cooper suggested that a gift of rose plants should be made, so Chairman Fred Breeds presented Derek with two roses. Derek says “One is called ‘You Are Beautiful’ producing pink blooms and the other ‘Super Trouper’ producing orange blooms. The roses are now planted and will be an annual reminder to us of the wonderful time Jean and I had for our Diamond Wedding Anniversary.”

John Lees’ Walk Across the USA
In August John Lees came to give a talk to the Club about his 1972 walk across America. He explained that, as a youngster, he was an asthmatic weakling. However while walking on the Downs he thought he would like to walk from Lands’ End to John O’Groats. In 1971 he achieved that dream in 26.5 days, and discovered that his asthma had gone. Next John did the London to Brighton Walk, coming 15th, and joined Brighton & Hove Athletics Club where he met Phil Chapman and Marilyn. He also knew of Bruce Tulloh, 1969 European 5000 metres Champion, who had by then walked across the USA. So in 1972 he flew to Los Angeles with Phil and Marilyn, took possession of a camper van, and started a regime of walking 50 miles per day towards New York. John became a celebrity as he walked along Route 66 - very boring with the occasional city, “any populated area with more than 5 inhabitants” says John. Then one day a reporter saw him eating a strange orange food and asked what it was. “A secret weapon called Mosh,” explained Phil, and the walk took on a new dimension as US reporters tried to find out what this substance was (in fact mashed potato and baked beans!). Alarm bells rang when John and the team discovered that John Ball, a runner had started the same route earlier, and had just broken Bruce Tulloh’s record! The pace was raised, walking whenever it was light. Eventually the Twin Towers came into view, and the Lincoln Tunnel was opened specially for John to walk through. He had done it! In 53 days, 12 minutes and 15 seconds, beating John Ball’s 53 days and 23 hours. In 1975 John became a member of the British Athletics Team, which he describes as a wonderful experience. He is now a radio sports reporter with BBC Sussex. Our own sports journalist, Bill Pierce, described John’s story as “an amazing feat”. SeAFoRD NATuRAL HiSToRY SoCieTY
The rich deep brown of conkers and the more dusky browns and fauns of fungi (top, below) are just some of the things to look out for at this time of the year.
We are looking forward to welcoming current and new members to Seaford Natural History Society’s 2013/2014 indoor programme of illustrated talks. Our season starts this year with a session on Farming for Wildlife on the Pevensey Levels (October 8th) and continues with the Wildlife of the Ouse Valley on 29th October.
But sometimes the less interesting looking plants are the most valuable – take Ivy (below right), for instance, with its dull leaves and insignificant green flowers. The flowers come out in September and October and are an important nectar source for bees as well as late flying butterflies and moths. The University of Sussex ‘s Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects published an article in April this year (2013) describing just how important ivy flowers are in improving the chances of colonies of bees surviving the winter – see their website at http://www. sussex.ac.uk/research/news/?id=19003 if you want to find out more. A key message from the research is that letting ivy flourish in your garden is one of the best things you can do to support bees and other insects. And as a bonus if it’s dense enough it will provide good nesting areas for birds.
We are a friendly group of people with an interest in wildlife, particularly the flora, fauna and habitats of East Sussex. Our meetings take place at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road at 2.15pm on Tuesday afternoons – see the listings at the back for details.Visitors are welcome – we ask for a donation of £3 which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society. For more information, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964.

On Seaford Head you can look out for a different sort of activity this winter. Following the appointment of Sussex Wildlife Trust ranger, Sarah Quantrill, to look after the local nature reserve, you will be able to spot volunteers clearing scrub and cattle grazing on the Head again as SWT start to bring the reserve back into good condition. Over time, this activity will improve the richness and diversity of the local flora and fauna, making Seaford Head an even more interesting place to visit for general visitors and naturalists alike. Seaford Natural History Society is playing its part in the management of the reserve. In August, eight of us and the ranger undertook a moon carrot census. Moon carrot is common in mainland Europe but rare in Britain. In fact, there are only two known sites in England – and one of them is here. The point of the exercise was to take a baseline census of the plants to inform future management of the areas in which they grow and to monitor their increase or decline over the next few years.

Fifty Shades of Silver... Recent figures produced by the Office for National Statistics show that the number of people aged over 60 getting divorced each year has been rising steadily since the mid-1990s.
A pension is often also one of the largest matrimonial assets of a long marriage. It can be particularly relevant in the common scenario where a husband has been the main breadwinner in the family and has accumulated either a pension fund or funds during his working life but his wife has not worked for several years and has no pension fund of her own or has a very limited state pension.

SEAhAVEN LiONESS CLUB The Lionesses’ main event coming up in October will once again be the Fashion Show in conjunction with M&Co. These have proved very popular the last two years, so make sure you get your tickets in good time. Details right: Most people are familiar with the work of Cancer Research UK but LIBRA is a less well known but equally worthwhile charity. LIBRA is the Lions International Blood Research Appeal and is dedicated to raising funds for the Haematology Department at King’s College Hospital. Blood disorders affect people of all ages and with LIBRA’s support King’s is able to provide first class patient care and the state-of-the art equipment that is vital in the treatment process. During 2013 LIBRA’s goal is to raise £100,000 so that two new items of equipment can be purchased. The specialist machines will be used by the haematology team to develop and trial new treatments for blood cancers including Lymphoma, Leukaemia and Myeloma. Throughout the summer the Lionesses have continued to run their bric-a-brac stalls in Broad Street most Saturday mornings. These will be winding down by October as the weather gets more autumnal, but there will be an end-of-season sale at St Leonard’s Church Hall on Saturday 26th October, where there will be bargains to be had, and delicious cakes! A few weeks ago four lionesses visited Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in West Sussex to present a cheque for the money raised by the Barn Dance earlier this year (top right). The money was for the Leo House Community Nurses, who are based at Chestnut Tree House, but work right across Brighton & Hove and East Sussex, and are much valued by the families they care for.

A Local Heritage of Care in our Community
The sTory oF The sT James’ TrusT BuiLDinGs anD siTe
11 Blatchington Road, Seaford
The Hospital of St James in Blatchington
The history of the site is inextricably linked to lepers. In the 12th-century world, and for many preceding centuries, lepers were regarded as unfit to mix with the general population. The disease had no cure, and sufferers were doomed to a painful death outside society, with little help. The Church assisted at times, with monks and nuns providing medical care. In 1147 the King’s Constable, one Roger de Fraxineto, gave 10 acres of land between the parish churches of Seaford and Blatchington for the building of a chapel and a leper hospital. It is not known how long a leper colony had existed on the site, but Roger was donating land already used by the lepers. Many were soldiers infected while fighting in the Holy Land, and a few were permitted to beg by the roadside; the leper had to sound a wooden clapper or bell to warn travellers of their presence and their alms dishes were placed on the opposite side of the road. The site was not ideal, as the hospital sat on a lowlying valley floor sloping down to the Salts, then a marshy area on the Ouse Estuary. When the spring tide coincided with a storm, sea water would have flooded the Salts and poured up the valley to the hospital and beyond. The stream marked on the map runs under Brooklyn Road, which is still liable to flooding today. De Fraxineto wanted his gift to appear generous. He stipulated that the complex had to include the hospital building, staff housing, kitchens and a chapel (Chapel Croft on the map) with a burial ground. This area covers what is now the Trek Club and the land down to the old Gasometers on the corner of Chichester Road. The Leper House (Spittal Croft) is on the same site as the present St James’ Trust Clubhouse. The Master’s House was located where numbers 3 and 5 Blatchington Road now stand. The Hospital existed for at least two hundred years, and its crumbling ruins were still visible in 1780. It is probable that the hospital was later used as an almshouse and documents indicate that in around 1761
42
a workhouse was built on the area now occupied by St James’ Hospital.
Seaford Workhouse
It is thought that the workhouse was situated in Twyne House and Twyne Cottage (3 and 5 Blatchington Road), just south of today’s Clubhouse. Parish workhouses were usually small establishments, often in rented properties. In 1723, the Knatchbull Act made it compulsory for paupers to be admitted to a workhouse to get “poor relief ”. Demand for places increased considerably and existing accommodation became inadequate. The ruins of the leper hospital were cleared around 1780, replaced by Seaford Parish Poorhouse. The Workhouse Master and his assistant occupied the two cottages, and the inmates lived in a long building in a yard at the rear; this building still stands and is now St James’ Trust Clubhouse. Paupers were expected to labour for their bed and basic food. The work carried out in Seaford is unknown, but rope picking was common in workhouses along the south coast. Old ships’ ropes, soaked in tar and seawater and up to three hundred feet long, were cut, soaked and picked apart by men, women and children as young as seven, the fibres being used as caulking between the timbers of wooden ships. Work continued for upwards of 12 hours a day; flogging or birching was a common punishment, and older children were hired out or sold as cheap labour to local tradesmen or householders. Seaford’s inmates were moved to a larger facility in Eastbourne in 1810, and the cottages sold. The workhouse buildings were used by artisans and businesses until the 1960s, when most of the property was abandoned. The building at

the north end of the yard was used as a wagon-making workshop and a wheelwright’s stone circle can still be seen in the car park. A wing was added to the building’s south end around 1890, used as a mortuary by a local undertaker.

Still Here Today Working In Our Community
Newhaven and District Model Railway Club has been the local focus for railway modelling for over 50 years. Our Club Room is adjacent to Newhaven Harbour Station and attracts modellers and rail enthusiasts from Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven as well as Eastbourne and Saltdean. Some members’ larger layouts have featured in the national model press.
In 2003 Mary Crutch, founder of the Seaford Volunteers’ Association, took on the derelict poorhouse buildings. Renovation work is still ongoing but there are now three halls, a kitchenette and a catering-size kitchen for hire in the main building, along with disabled toilets and an office. The mortuary will be tackled next, being converted into meeting rooms for the Trust. St James’ Trust still keeps up the tradition of caring for the people of Seaford but you will be pleased to know it is some time since we have flogged or sold one of our clients! The Trust, like every charity, is mainly self funding and relies heavily on the goodwill of local people for donations and legacies to help perpetuate and improve its service to the community. If you can help us with a donation your money will not be wasted or misused. For further information contact Bryan Turner or Janet White on 01323 492800, or pop in and see us.
The Club holds its annual exhibition in Seaford (details below) This year we have a little extra; visitors can bring their locos (N to OO gauge) which may require attention to our loco clinic for servicing. Newhaven & District Model Railway Club and Newlands School present

Do You WANT To KNoW MoRe ABouT MAGiSTRATeS? Why do we have magistrates? What is their role in the Justice System? Are they trained? Are they paid? Why do court penalties differ so widely? How are these judgements made? How are magistrates selected and appointed? These are just a few of the questions constantly asked – and seldom answered. Magistrates in the Community has been launched to provide accurate information about part of the criminal justice system that has evolved through 650 years – and to remove many misconceptions. The MIC has selected magistrates who give talks and power point presentations to interested groups. The sessions – there is no charge – last 30 to 90 minutes with opportunities to ask specific questions: The aim is to create transparency. Justices of the Peace are NOT part of a secret society, nor have they anything to hide. We will give you the facts and your questions will be answered. You will hear case studies. You will be given the opportunity of passing theoretical sentences after mock trials, and you will be told of the constraints that bind Justices of the Peace. You will hear of the work done in Criminal, Youth and Family Courts – and the role of the probation service. We can promise an interesting morning, afternoon or evening – the time-table and location are arranged to suit you. We will travel to schools, colleges, universities, church halls, professional groups, factories, youth organisations... The list is never-ending. All we require are groups of interested people – of any age – who want to hear about the processes that affect your community. ParaGLiDer reuniTeD WiTh LiFe-saVers A paraglider who crashed while flying near Seaford has been reunited with the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance medics who helped save his life. Retired electronics engineer Ian Daniels, 65, fell more than 50ft to the ground suffering a broken shoulder and chest and internal injuries. He said, “All I can remember is that I was flying at High and Over and had reached a height of about 800ft. Presumably I then made my way back to the ridge where I had taken off but after that I don’t remember anything. It’s possible I lost consciousness due to dehydration as it was very hot that day.” A van driver and two other paragliders who witnessed the crash raised the alarm and paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) went to the scene. Due to the severity of Ian’s injuries, they called in Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance which arrived in just 20 minutes from its base at Marden – a journey that could have taken more than an hour by road. Pilot Kevin Goddard landed in a field next to Ian and his colleagues, Dr Malcolm Tunnicliffe and paramedic Sloane Philips, carried out emergency treatment at the scene. They gave him pain relief, sedated him and carried out chest surgery - advanced medical procedures usually performed only in hospital. They then airlifted the grandfather-of-three to the Royal Sussex County

Hospital at Brighton where scans confirmed he had five broken ribs and a damaged spleen. Ian, from Hassocks, spent six days at the regional major trauma centre before he was finally allowed home. He recently visited the Air Ambulance base to meet Malcolm and Sloane for the first time since his accident in July. And he watched as the life-saving charity helicopter took off on another call, this time to a road traffic collision in St Leonards on Sea. He said: “I feel very grateful to the Air Ambulance to still be alive. It’s a brilliant organisation and I’m surprised it doesn’t get any regular funding from the Government. “There are a lot of volunteers who help raise the money and I would not have got the help I did without them.” Sloane said: “It was great to see Ian again and we are absolutely thrilled with his recovery.” Photo, Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance paramedic Sloane Philips and paraglider Ian Daniels.

Phone Bob for a free quotation on 01323 890529 or 07989 818725 The Seaford Handbell Ringers have been meeting at St James’s Clubhouse in Blatchington Road, Seaford on a Wednesday for many years. Some of us meet in the orning from 10am to 12.30pm and others get together in the afternoon starting at 2pm. When people hear the handbells for the first time, some are very surprised at the quality of the sound. Handbells can be quite melodius and it is possible to play any type of music on them.

Above is a photograph of some of the morning group entertaining at an outdoor festival last year. We are wondering whether there are any music-loving people amongst you who might like to join us so we have decided to hold an ‘Open Morning’ on Wednesday 23rd October when any visitor can come along, have a cup of coffee and a chat, listen to the bells and maybe “have a go’” if that appeals. No qualifications are required but of course it is helpful if you are able to read music, even if only a little. We really hope to see some of you at St James’s on October 23rd when you will be made very welcome.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

CHRiSTMAS ARTS @ CRYPT GALLeRY 2013
November 23rd - 1st December Daily 11am - 5pm Many of us are beginning to think ahead to Christmas. We’re planning how we can delight our friends and family with fun, original gifts while still keeping within our budgets. The Christmas Arts @ Crypt Gallery has come to be an essential place for many of us to shop. Seaford has a wide range of talented, creative people who work all year round to produce high quality goods for this show. Also, this year we are joined by a number of new artists from further afield whose work will delight equally. This show has been held every year for the past seven years. In that time we have established a reputation for innovation, quality and range. This year will be no exception. For those who enjoy visual art, there will be painting, prints and cards by well-known Sussex artists, acrylic designs on driftwood, stones and canvas, as well as photography “with a twist”. The “Made by” team of three textile artists will be selling up-cycled furniture as well as children’s toys and clothes. There will be hand painted silk and hand-dyed, woven scarves. Other textile artists will provide their ever popular handbags, hand-painted silk boxes, books and bangles, felted jewellery, shambala bracelets and fun handbags with stenciled images of dogs. Jewellery is always a popular gift. This year we have seven jewellers, all with very different styles and using a range of different materials including sterling silver, antique silver cutlery, semi precious stones, buttons, beads and enamelling. Four local paper crafters have worked all year to showcase their mixed media jewellery, notebooks and other paper-based gifts. There will be lots of different ceramics ranging from pouring bowls, serving platters, mugs, jugs and decorations. As you can see, there will most definitely be something for everyone. There will be a plethora of beaded, sparkly and “bling” Christmas decorations created by many of the exhibition’s makers. We are delighted that the every popular Stratta will be selling their infused oils and Jaju Beans and Leaves will have gift boxes of their teas and
coffees. You will be able to take a break from shopping in our “café” area where you can sample delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink. Finally, we are delighted that Seaford’s Young Mayor Georgina Coyler and Deputy Young Mayor Millie Hemsley will be opening the show on Saturday November 23rd at 11am and we know that many of you will want to be there for our opening celebration. To find out more and to see examples of what will be on offer go to the website: www.artandcraftsinseaford.blogspot.com

The 2013 Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony The 2013 Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony took place at Dean’s Place Hotel, Alfriston on Tuesday 13th August. This is the sixth consecutive year that the prizes for the Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition have been presented at this venue. Chairman Isabel Stephenson welcomed more than 80 invited guests, including the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr. Anthony White, and representatives from organisations in Seaford who continue to support Seaford in Bloom in many ways. The most important people there though, were the Floral Competition entrants. Ashley Stephenson L.V.O gave an interesting and informative talk on the unusual plants and flora that can be seen in various locations around Seaford in spite of the chalky soil and windy conditions. These included a Golden Rain Tree and a Tree of Heaven that can be seen from the A259, a Beschorneria Yuccoides and a Restio plant in one of this year’s judged gardens and a Ricinus Castor Oil plant spotted in a front garden on a Seaford housing estate. Ashley explained that, as quite a strong laxative, castor oil can be the cause of harm, especially if it is ingested accidentally as a result of spray from its use as a lubricant, but it is the substance left in the residue after the beans have been crushed to produce the oil which makes Ricinus communis such a notorious plant. Because those residues contain ricin. Other plants of interest in the town are Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) and a “must have” plant for any garden, Campanula lactiflora. Many people have commented that the baskets and floral displays in Seaford are better than ever this year. There followed an innovative presentation of all the Floral Competition entries when, thanks to Nigel and Fotobox, there was a slide show containing photos of all the gardens. Nigel had accompanied the judges on judging day and managed to capture the excellent images which he used to produce this fascinating show. Ashley gave an interesting and informative commentary to accompany the show.
62
After a refreshment break, Isabel began the Awards presentation. There were more entries than ever in this year’s Floral Competition and Isabel thanked the judges, Ashley Stephenson and Phillip Pople, for their excellent judging efforts. The awards were then presented by the Mayor of Seaford Cllr Anthony White, who congratulated each of the prize winners. A large onscreen photo, provided by Nigel and Fotobox, of the winning entry accompanied each recipient’s award. First-time competition entrant, Susan Luckin, won the awards for Best New Entry, Hanging Basket (Private), Best Back Garden and Best Overall Entry. Another new entrant, Debbie Hibberd, won the Best Front Garden award and the Plantsman’s Cup for Best Plant Interest. Debbie was also runner up in the Best New Entry category. John Price presented The Ivy Price Cup for “High Standard of Achievement” to Crooked Lane Estates. There was also loud applause when 92 year old Mrs Barbara Bax, a long time loyal supporter of Seaford in Bloom, was awarded the Mayor’s Cup for “Outstanding Effort”. The Patrick McCausland Trophy for special contribution to Seaford in Bloom was awarded to Europlants, who have provided such excellent service in supplying and maintaining the town’s floral displays over the years. Isabel said “They have always gone that extra mile to get everything right”. The Mayor congratulated everyone who took part in this year’s competition. He said that “the Town Council and staff are grateful to Seaford in Bloom for making Seaford such a pleasant town in which to live and it was a great honour to be Mayor of such a town”
Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
After the awards presentation, Seaford Town Clerk Sam Shippen thanked all those who had entered this year’s Floral Competition. She also thanked the Seaford in Bloom committee for their hard work in helping to make Seaford such a colourful town. She then revealed the sad news that Seaford in Bloom is to fold but also outlined plans for the town’s floral displays in the future, involving Seaford Town Council. Former Seaford Town Clerk Len Fisher paid an emotional tribute to Isabel and her committee. He hoped that volunteers would come forward to continue with Seaford in Bloom – although it will be “one hell of an act to follow”. Len ended by thanking Isabel and her committee for “helping to make Seaford such a lovely place to live”.

DRiFTWooD GARDeN 2013 Driftwood garden has just closed its gates for 2013 and finished the year with a bang! The final 7 openings were for Artwave, the local Lewes District Art Festival where the venue had its most successful result in 5 years of opening! An amazing 1,045 visitors spent over £6,000 on the art on show and helped raise over £1,200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Throughout the summer the garden has seen over 2,800 visitors pass through the gate and has been selling raffle tickets for artist donated prizes as well, raising funds for Macmillan in addition to the garden trail Geoff Stonebanks organised back in August. The results of these efforts, through the Driftwood Fundraising Group, set up and run by Geoff from Driftwood, 4 Marine Drive, Bishopstone, has meant that Macmillan Cancer Support has just received a cheque from him for £8,900, for the monies raised this year alone. Total money for all charities raised through the garden over the last 4 years has been a staggering £31,000. Seen here, surrounded by visitors to the garden, including the two children, Robyn and Jimmy Thomas, is Rob Moon, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, receiving the cheque from Geoff Stonebanks in his garden on the 8th September, shortly after Rob had completed the draw for the fabulous raffle prizes. Rob said after receiving the cheque, “Macmillan wants to make sure that no one in Sussex faces cancer alone and we can only do so through the generous support of the public. I want to thank Geoff and everyone involved with the Driftwood Fundraising Group for their fantastic support. The money raised will go towards The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Appeal”.

www.rsaerials.co.uk Macmillan is working in partnership with local charity, The Sussex Cancer Fund, and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, to build the centre and provide the service. The centre will the first of its kind in Sussex to offer all round support and information for people affected by cancer in a calm, friendly and welcoming environment. Geoff said “It has been an exhausting summer with all the events in the garden, but none of it could have been achieved without the invaluable help and support of a small group of dedicated individuals, notably, Mark Glassman, Richard Walsh, Celia Hughes, Diane Marquess, Clare Mayers to name but a few, not to mention the visitors themselves for donating money. musicaL shoWTime The latest concert was held at Seaford Head Upper School, Arudel Road on Saturday 27th July. Musician David Thomas, entertained 140 of us using his Roland AT900, top of the range electronic organ. Additionally, onstage, was a projected image utilising video cameras, around the organ, enabling the audience to see the keyboards clearly. Also David was using a vision mixer in order to mix in pre-prepared clips of the likes of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers dancing along with his music. For his finale David sang “Top Hat” as a duet with Bing Crosby. A very cleverly edited video of the original film allowed Frank Sinatra, in the original movie, to be replaced by David singing his parts live. The next “Musical Showtime” is likely to be some time in November. We are at present awaiting theatre availability. Anyone interested in coming along for the first time, free of charge, should either keep an eye on the Musical showtime web site or drop an email to get on to the mailing list. Second plus visits are just £6 and include all refreshments too. Musical Showtime normally runs quarterly. www.musicalshowtime.co.nr

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT Reverend Meade Buck
The Reverend William Henry Meade Ogle Buck became the vicar of St Leonard’s Church in 1864. He was responsible for restoring the west end of the church and building the Vicarage. The Church Vestry was responsible for running the town with Seaford Corporation and he chaired many meetings. He was instrumental in helping to abolish the old undemocratic Corporation and establish a “Local Government Board” in 1883. He proposed the names of 9 of the 12 candidates. The Reverend urged the council to supply affordable housing for the poor and for a library to be established. He did not always get his own way; when he purchased a crucifix and candlesticks for the altar of the church people were so angry they smashed the windows of his home. He died in 1898 and was one of our longest serving clergymen. Life-size ‘Punch & Judy’ featured popular characters - Punch, Judy, Joey the Clown and PC Plod, all up to mischief, and there was a “Musical Doll” dancing on the pavement to a clarinet played by one of our musicians, much to everyone’s amusement and enjoyment. The ‘Claude Award’ based on a cartoon character of a hermit crab) will take the form of certificates and badges for classes which complete a variety of marinebased tasks. It is open to all primary schools in Sussex aimed at Key Stages 1 and 2 and involves activities such as rockpooling, creating beach art, and beach walks. But if your school is too far from the seashore to visit you can still take part, as some of the ‘Claude Award’ activities include designing a poster of your favourite marine creature, creating a beach display in your school, writing a story about a sea creature or becoming a friend of a Marine Conservation Zone. Schools can register a class for the award by contacting Nikki Hills, Sussex Wildlife Trust Making Waves Project Officer at www.makingwavesproject.org.uk or call her on 07943 504479. To receive a free copy of our Making Waves family beach activity leaflet ‘What’s in the sea?’ or a marine themed bookmark, call Sussex Wildlife Trust on 01273 492630. Making Waves is an exciting marine education and awareness partnership project between Sussex Wildlife Trust and hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. Supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is spreading the word about our wonderful marine life and the importance of protecting it.

THe FRieNDS oF TiDe MiLLS Eleven of us managed to collect just nine sacks of litter at the August meeting, which continues the slow but seemingly steady downward trend in terms of the amount of litter collected over the last few months. There is no doubt that all of us together; the FOTM, NPP (the land owners), casual and regular visitors of the area, are now making real inroads into the amount of litter around this much loved site. We should all take pride in what we are achieving, but of course, we can never be complacent to the point that we believe the problem to be finally solved. All the time the sea continues to be used as a dustbin by commercial shipping, the fishing industry, unthinking visitors to the area itself and so on there will always be a need to continue the regular clean up to keep on top. We meet on the third Sunday of the month, which for October is the 20th. We can never have enough volunteers and all will be made very welcome. Meet at 10am at the waymarker at the beach end of the old village road, for nominally two hours, but whatever time can be spared is appreciated. This a very special place, please help us keep it that way. More details from: brian.skinner2@btinternet.com or at: http://www.tidemills.webs.com/

Which living person do you most admire? My grandad. Where is your favourite place to go in seaford? I have been known to disappear down to the Base and have a play on the drums, something I used to do in my teens when I was in a band. What is your greatest fear? Heights. What is the best advice you have ever been given? It doesn’t matter what you do, just be the best you can be. What keeps you awake at night? Nightmares and flashbacks to my accident. What words or phrases do you most overuse? “Lu” - calling my Mrs every time I need something. how would you spend a million pounds? Buy a huge farm and rescue dogs, secure my family’s future by paying off any debts or mortgages and finally I would buy a Nissan GTR and a Jet ski. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Muhammad Ali. What has been you most embarrasing moment? Not putting the hand break on my car enough and it rolled into my dad’s car, causing more damage to his than mine. What is your most memorable learning experience? Helping my grandad putting up a fence and wanting to be the best fencing and decking contractor. What would your motto be? Once you are under my wing I will always look after you.

Last month’s bulletin concluded with good luck wishes to Cameron and Richard who started at Plumpton College in September, so it is really good to start October’s with the great news that our first student from Plumpton College came top of her year in her chosen subject, Countryside Management. Natasha took a diploma course and is now hoping to upgrade to a foundation degree. In the meantime she has been working in friends’ gardens and volunteering at an allotment at Tideway School, Newhaven for which she has been given part ownership.Congratulations Natasha! How good it would be to see her passing on her new skills to us in our classroom – yes, it’s finally finished – one day in the not too distant future. Volunteers have worked their socks off during the summer erecting the classroom under the guiding hands of Dave, Robert and James and then painting it. The increasing visitor numbers show that our garden at The Crouch is becoming a regular must-visit and now our fame has travelled further afield – well, as far as the seafront and the popular tea and ice cream spot of Frankie’s café, on the seafront between Dane Road and the Martello Tower, run by Dom Smith. Dom has kindly included us on his new Community Notice Board so spare a moment from relaxing in the sun on one of his comfy deckchairs as you watch the children playing in the sand pit, and read all about us. We, of course, find somewhat different uses for buckets and spades, but it’s all great fun. Produce has been superb and your donations for our beans, tomatoes, courgettes, leaves, herbs, beetroot, onions, carrots, peppers, aubergines and berries etc. on Wednesdays and Saturdays are much appreciated. From now on we shall be reverting to Wednesday morning-only opening, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, when there should still be root vegetables and leeks for sale, plus a variety of plants and shrubs. And of course the big excitement this month is the
annual pumpkin competition in the Crouch Gardens on 26 October between 3 to 6pm hosted by Seaford Family Focus Group with Community Give. Seaford Community Garden will not be open during the event but if the size of our own pumpkins is anything to go by there should be some absolute whoppers to carve into strange and ghoulish shapes! Lastly, thanks to all our volunteers who have given up their Saturday mornings for the last three months, and especially to Mike. The Garden Team Thanks to Sarah Demoratti for our lovely new logo. Photo: Radishes, like most other salad veg, grew well this year.

On August 15th members and visitors were treated to 3 economic “Ways with Willow” by our President Georgie Wall in a workshop. The afternoon was a great success with people trying any or all of the designs shown. An example was a cut down lemonade bottle being used as a container, this had 2 large rubber bands fixed on the outside and pieces of willow were inserted between the bands and the bottle until the bottle was hidden. Water was put into the bottle together with one or more garden or shop-bought flowers. The arrangement was finished off with 2 pieces of raffia tied around to disguise the rubber bands. A truly costsaving and effective idea. September’s meeting of “Show Stoppers” by Gillian Sadler was anticipated as this review went to print. On 17th October we have an exciting and exotic afternoon promised as Mrs Nadira Burqi from Middlesex demonstrates “Scheherazade”. Visitors are always welcome, the more the merrier. For more details please telephone Tina Bacon on 01323 873163.

s the pruning of roses confusing? Many of us do get confused or lack confidence when thinking about pruning our roses. So what is pruning? It’s the removal of stems or parts of stems which may no longer bear good quality flowers. A rose stem is only effective for a few years before the plant starts to switch it off and grow a new one. Pruning is divided into two main stages. The first applies to all roses and the second applies to only some types of rose. Stage 1: Remove any part which is dead, diseased, damaged or weak. Stage 2: If it is a brand new rose then cut it back hard to encourage fresh new growth. By hard we mean just a few inches above the ground. If it is an established rose then hard pruning will produce fewer but larger blooms. Light pruning will lead to earlier but smaller blooms. As a general rule Hybrid Teas should be pruned to about half way up your leg and Floribundas cut about knee height. If possible cut to an outward dormant bud and cut at an angle so the rain runs off. When should all this be done? Any time during the dormant season should be fine. The exception is that Climbing Roses should be pruned by late autumn. If you have a large rambling rose then don’t bother, find something else to do and leave it alone. Finally, you will need good sharp pair of to d
Lifting & Storing DahLiaS
By October you should start planning when to lift your Dahlias for storage. Cut the plants from their support sticks especially if they have been blackened by frost. Cut the plants back to about four inches from the ground. Carefully lift them from the ground without damaging the tubers and label each plant with its name or variety. Shake off or remove as much soil as you can, wash the tuber if necessary. The stems of the Dahlia need to dry out before storage. Place the tubers upside down in trays in a cool dry place for several weeks so that all moisture drains from the stems. When fully dry box them up in peat or peat-free compost making sure that the crown or top of the tuber is not completely buried. Leave a few inches of stalk above the level of the compost. If need be cover the surface of the compost with something loose and dry such as bark chippings. Store them in a cool, frost-free place over winter. They can be encouraged back into growth in the spring when you can take cuttings if required. Dahlias are such lovely flowers and should be grown in every garden. You can also enter them in next year’s Annual Show!
MEMBERS’ NOTiCE BOARD
Our penultimate Social Evening of the year is on Thursday 31st October at the St. Leonard’s Church Hall starting at 7pm. Gary Carter will introduce ‘A Year in the Life of the Seaford Horticultural Society’. This is his own audio-visual recording of all our events throughout 2013. Gary will be assisted by the Seaford Photographic Society. The usual raffle and refreshments will also be available.

seaForD GarDeninG cLuB By the time this article goes into print we will officially be well into autumn. Let’s hope that October will be a warm and dry month to enable us to get our gardens tidy and ready for the winter ahead. At least August and early September gave us some decent weather to go out and enjoy the fresh air. The club did not meet in August so I will tell you about our 4th outing in July. Our destination was Godinton House and gardens near Ashford in Kent. Our two guides gave our party a very informative tour of this lovely manor with roots dating back to the 14th century, and which for generations was the home of the Toke family. The interior offers much of interest, from the medieval great hall to fine furniture and porcelain. We then had a delicious home-made tea and a stroll around the gardens, designed by Sir Reginald Bloomfield in 1895. The house boasts an Italian garden, newly designed rose beds, immaculate lawns, a large ornate pond and herbaceous borders. A delightful afternoon enjoyed by everyone.

Please note that our next meeting will be on Wednesday 23rd October, one week earlier than usual. It will commence at 7pm for the AGM, followed by a talk by Dr Sarah McKenzie on the subject of British Trees. As usual, this meeting will take place in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford – please use the entrance opposite Tesco. Everyone is welcome to attend either as a visitor for a fee of £2 or you can subscribe for the year for £10. There are no extra costs. We are sure you will enjoy an evening among friendly people and hopefully learn something at the same time! Further information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or by visiting www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. Before closing this report, the committee and all members would like to express their sadness at learning that Seaford in Bloom is to finish. The club has always supported this event and we thank Isabel and her committee for their dedication and hard work of over 20 years. Let’s hope someone will come forward to continue making our town so colourful in the summer months. It’s ironic that the towers, tubs and hanging baskets have been so fantastic this year! Good luck to you all.
