Welcome
Welcome to the October issue. What a glorious Indian summer we have had this year! Can you believe that winter is just around the corner? Before then though there’s plenty to enjoy this month with Seaford Bonfire Society’s torchlit procession and firework display on the 18th, and half term Halloween fun at Seaford Museum and Newhaven Fort. There are exhibitions at St Leonard’s Church and the Crypt Gallery, whilst Seaford Martello Rotary are holding their Proms Night on the 11th – get your flags out! There’s music from the Corelli Ensemble, Seaford Music Society, The Concert Singers and Lewes Concert Orchestra – more details on the “what’s on” pages, oh, and what did Hurricane Bertha leave on Seaford’s East Beach? See page10. Don’t forget the clocks go back on Sunday 26th. Enjoy!

More tree planting in Seaford: Chalvington Fields The Seaford Tree Wardens are back in business! Thanks to funds from Seaford Town Council, the Big Tree Plant, and many residents, we planted about 40 street trees in March/April 2014 in various parts of the town. These are now doing well (with one exception!) thanks to careful planting and subsequent watering by residents. We have secured funding to plant a significant number of saplings, probably in November 2014. We have had many requests to plant street trees and in February 2015 we hope to plant about 40 trees. Saplings are not sufficiently robust for street plantings. We are looking into the location of underground services to identify the best sites for street trees and we will then contact the residents in the streets concerned. We are about to start the detailed planning to plant the saplings. Many sites in Seaford suffer from salt laden winds and are not suitable for saplings. On the other

hand, Chalvington Fields appears to be very suitable, as the saplings planted a few years ago, with much involvement by the local community, are thriving. We will be writing shortly to residents who live near Chalvington Fields and asking: l What factors should be taken into account when developing layouts and designs for the planting. We will obviously wish to keep the character of the Fields with open views to the surrounding countryside.
l Who
will be willing to help with the planting? We will be approaching Cradle Hill school to see if it will be feasible for the children to help with the planting. We expect the planting to be spread over several days. Unpaid Workers (supervised by the Probation Service) have already successfully planted trees at various sites in the town. We plan to seek their help with Chalvington Fields.
l What
species should be planted? Hazel, Common Hawthorn, Euonymus, Holly, Private Crab Apple, Cherry and Viburnum planted a few years ago have done well, but some other species may be equally successful. The Tree Wardens would like to hear the views of residents on the above questions. Emails should be sent to Keithrblackburn@live.co.uk or sent to Oak House, Cuckmere Road, Seaford, BN25 4DE. Comments can also be sent to the Tree Wardens, c/o Tourist Information Office, at 37 Church Street. Seaford, BN25 1HG. Progress reports will be issued during the winter.

In the lee of Hurricane Bertha
by Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski
Whilst West Beach is still closed to the public, there is still a lot of sand to be enjoyed at Tide Mills, and the contiguous East Beach when the tide goes out and weather permits. Sheltered by East pier, the gently shelving beach there which emerges from below the replenishment gravels is a great favourite with surfers, dog walkers and bait diggers – to name just a few of the summer visitors. Mind you, be careful of soft patches where spring waters bubble up – plus occasional hidden mud underfoot because the River Ouse is never far away. August saw an unusual combination of big tides, thanks to the proximity of the Moon, coupled with transAtlantic storms due to ex-Hurricane Bertha (the seventh American hurricane with the same name!). The wildlife took a battering here with heaps of tube worms (Pectinaria) and strings of sea potatoes (Echinocardium) as well as rayed trough shells (Mactra) dumped along the low water line. The surface sand had been striped away, exposing all these animals and more, with razor shells poking up like split candles. Although exhausted, the live shellfish were trying to burrow with their fleshy, wedge-shaped feet. But it was too late for the sea potatoes, a kind of heart-shaped sea urchin, distantly related to the flint ones occasionally found from the local Chalk. These animals, with their five rays like starfish, had already suffocated in their burrows from the shifting sands. Now they were a cold barbecue for the flocking beach birds while the exhilarated surfers rode the large waves nearby. Other items exposed were bits of old driftwood, some blackened and encrusted, probably from long-lost
10
wooden vessels. An old sea anchor, perhaps belonging to the Catherine wrecked here exactly one hundred years ago, was also visible. Her loss was on the eve of World War One, widely commemorated last month. The rusty, regular posts sticking out of the sand belong to both World Wars, but an oblique set seen last month looked just like one of the slanting ramps from the Great War hydroplane base which can be picked out on early aerial photographs. The youthful Royal Air Force then based at Tide Mills kept a vigilant eye for imperial German submarines (U-boats) in the local Channel, which was neither safe for the English nor French at the time. This was because there were a lot of tempting targets in the form of transport ships plying the ferry route and loaded with supplies for the Western Front. (The rusty remnants of one of these submarines can still be visited further East under the Seven Sisters). A different era indeed from the time of tide mills and Medieval salterns evoked by other local relics. The wildlife will undoubtedly recover from the effects of the hurricane as it has before and the beach cleaners will bag up the debris in their eternal chore. Before that, however, we did manage to find a present from Bertha carried on by the long-shore drift around Seaford Head to Cuckmere Haven – a heart-shaped sea bean (Entada), buoyed along all the way from the Caribbean. Photos from the Tide Mills area by Ed Jarzembowski, from top: Rusty world war posts, Medieval pot rim (picked up on storm beach), Sea potatoes, wedges shells and some tube worms, Sea bean, anchor (spade).

Seaford Residents’ Voice
Seaford has a residents’ voice again! Seaford Residents’ Voice is a group that represents ALL residents. Members must be residents of the town and aged 16 or over.
It was set up by public meeting in March of this year, when the committee was elected by the residents present (getting on for 100 people) in response to calls to action when the problems at Seaford Town Council became known. The aim is to work for and with the residents on matters that affect everyone. Cllr Sylvia Dunn has been asked by the Council to serve as its representative on the small but enthusiastic Committee.
Work so far
They have already been successful in liaising with the Town Council on a variety of matters. To date a constitution has been finalised, some fundraising work done and they are now ready to move forward.
expertise amongst our committee. But if you don’t tell us, we can’t help. “
Plans
“We need volunteers to help at fundraising events, to help us spread our message and get our existence known and our message across,” Anne continues. “We also want to start a database of Members – there is no charge for membership – so it’s easier for Members to contact the Committee, and so they can be given news of the Association’s activities.” A website is in progress and will be at seafordresidentsvoice.co.uk; a joining form will be on that within a month. In the meantime you can email nanne032@gmail.com, or phone Anne on 01323 892684 or 07753 938237. Or look for Seaford Residents’ Voice on Facebook. If you wish to post or drop a form in please do so to 27 West Street, Seaford BN25 1EE.
The Chairman, Anne, explains,“Fundraising is needed because although a lot of information has been on Facebook we recognise that Seaford has over 25,000 people – many of whom don’t access social media. So we are raising funds to produce and deliver a leaflet to every home in the town.”
Opinions wanted
They want your views about what is important to you. People have already mentioned The Salts, sea defences, better Town Council communications, a Neighbourhood Plan and more. “We are not miracle workers – we are ordinary people – a cross section of Seaford residents,” says Anne, “and we have a lot of enthusiasm and

Citizens Advice is 75! 75 years ago the first Citizens Advice Bureau opened in response to the breakout of World War 11. On 4th September 1939 the first 200 bureaux opened. From the start volunteers ran the service working from public buildings and private houses. Advisers dealt with problems relating to the loss of ration books, homelessness and evacuation. They also helped locate missing relatives and prisoners of war. Debt quickly became an issue as household income reduced due to call-ups. Today the service is responding to a different type of crisis but still offering free, confidential advice from over 3,500 venues across England and Wales. We also make a lasting difference to society through campaigning for change through our social policy work. On a local level the two bureaux of Lewes and Seaford were amalgamated in December 1997, having been separate charities before that date. We still operate as a single entity under the name of Lewes District CAB and contrary to what many people think we are an independent charity, receiving no central government funding. We are really proud of our staff and volunteers and our army of supporters, without whom we would not be here. No one knows when they might have a problem they can’t sort out and that is why we plan to be here for your children, family and friends for many years to come. As an independent charity we can’t survive without your help so please think about supporting us in any way you can; by giving your time, money, expertise or even something tangible like a ream of copier paper! We are always looking for new volunteers, so if you have some free time why not look at our website to check on volunteering opportunities www.lewescab.org. uk. You may be surprised at how flexible we can be.

ToWN Crier brings ACCESS REPAIRS home a trophy! REPAIRS TO:
The Town Crier of Seaford, Peter White, returned from the Chester World Town Crier Tournament clutching a trophy! Peter, who is also Seaford’s Serjeant at Mace, had not expected to win in a contest with 24 other Criers including a number of World Champions. True to his expectation he was not placed in the top 10 of this 10-nationality competition.

However, two sharp-eyed costume judges noticed the military cut and classic lines of his 1865-replica uniform, crafted by the Queen’s Warranted Naval Uniform Tailor Geoffrey Golding. And he was placed second overall.

Peter said, “To win second place was a great honour. The winner, a Native American from Canada, had three different brilliant outfits and deserved to win!” It is also a big thankyou for the Clubs and individuals who helped to fund the new uniform two years ago. Peter was presented to the Lord Mayor of Chester, who actually knows Seaford well. Peter presented him with an inscribed and sealed parchment greeting from the Mayor of Seaford, and his own personal gift: a stick of Seaford Rock! All the Criers volunteered for an afternoon of community work, and Peter spent his time in Chester’s Central Library reading stories to children in their holiday reading club. Peter’s next foray into the competitive world is the National Town Criers’ Championship in Hastings’ Priory Meadow on the morning and afternoon of October 18th. He’d value your support!

Seaford Music Society – A well-kept secret If you don’t already know about our concerts, you are missing a treat. Using family-and-friends connections in London, the committee brings rising young Londonbased musicians to play concerts in Seaford in the winter. If you think you might like classical music, then tickets are only £12 for a single concert. To sit in a modest-sized room with a few dozen people, watching and hearing fine musicians create magic out of a few instruments and some dots on a page, is one of the great pleasures of civilisation. You won’t like everything you hear, but what you do like will stay with you for a long time. People dress informally, the seats are comfortable and there is tea/coffee at the interval. Noone will nobble you except perhaps to ask if you are enjoying the music. And of course, afterwards some drift over to the Wellington opposite... The players on 17th October at 7.45 at Crossway, Steyne Road, are the Benyounes String Quartet, with music by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. You may not know them yet but we are confident that you will in the future.

RHUBARB
t
October is ideal for planting rhubarb or dividing old existing clumps, particularly towards the end of the month went it starts to get colder. Choose your site carefully as this is a long-term crop. Rhubarb prefers as much sun as possible. It will tolerate a little shade but it will not tolerate water logging, so a well-drained area is essential. Dig a hole twice the size of the clump being planted and fill with plenty of compost or manure. Rhubarb will stay were it is for many years, so feed it well from the start. During the summer keep it well watered to ensure a good crop. Do not be tempted to pick stalks in the first year, leave the plant to get well established. Give it a general feed in about October, then mulch during winter months. Begin pulling sticks in April and stop in August. Always leave a minimum of four sticks on the plant. Remove any flowering stalks. All the leaves are poisonous but they can be safely put on the compost heap.

what
T
he Seaford Horticultural Society has been in existence for 115 years since 1899. Since then it has held regular Annual Shows. On 9th August 2014 the Society held it’s 112th Annual Show. The missing years were because Shows were suspended for most of WW11. However, 2014 was a most successful show with 420 entries – this was an increase from the 386 in 2013. Exhibitors of flowers, fruit and vegetables were concerned during the few days leading up to the show when weather reports warned that the remains of hurricane Bertha was on its way. Fortunately the weather held out just long enough to make the day enjoyable for both exhibitors and visitors. All classes were well represented and it was good to see many new exhibitors at the show. There were some lovely Dahlias and Gladioli on display together with some excellent fruit and vegetables. Exhibits in the Photography, Arts & Crafts classes received plenty
JOBS TO DO IN OCTOBER
3 Early October is the ideal time to make Sloe Gin for Christmas. Take a walk over the hills, pick some sloe berries and make your festive cheer. 3 Time to consider putting up some large bubble protection inside the greenhouse for the winter. 3 Sow Sweet Pea seeds for next year if you want show quality flowers. Mid month you can also plant Garlic. This will be fine in the ground over winter and get a good start for next year. 3 Harvest Apples and Pears by the end of the month. Pick and store the last of the Carrots.
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD The final Social Evening takes place at St Leonard’s Church Hall on Thursday 30th October. The Vice Chairman, Gary Carter, presents his “Year in the Life of the Seaford Horticultural Society plus other audiovisuals. The evening’s flower competition is “A vase of Six Chrysanthemums”. We are now looking for members to join us on the Committee for 2015. Please speak to Mike at the social evening for further details.

Enjoying the mellow, peaceful days of early autumn – we are being treated to an Indian summer as this is written – it is easy to forget all the hard work that goes into running a garden such as this one tucked away in a corner of the Crouch Gardens. This month then, let us introduce you to just a few of the very special people who bring their particular talents to run aspects of the garden. Take Maggie (left) for instance, whose smiling face generally greets all of us, volunteers and visitors alike, as she womans the sales table just inside the gates. Maggie says she likes this job because, with a chair to sit on, it gives her arthritic hip a bit of rest. Partially deaf, she is something of an expert on hearing aids and regularly talks to people at St James’s Trust and the Downs Day Centre about aid maintenance. Then there’s Cameron (left with Jordan, right), a second-year student at Plumpton Agricultural College, whose first job of a Wednesday morning is to call in at Bishopstone Nurseries in Dane Road and collect quantities of trimmings from flowers and foliage used in bouquets and arrangements. These are then cut up and put on one of three compost bins that are managed by Mike. (left). A retired policeman, Mike not only looks

after the compost that goes on the veg beds but also comes into the garden during hot and dry spells to ensure that everything is watered. Also on the compost is Stan, and he was last seen in the poly tunnel mixing compost with the Pro-Grow soil conditioner kindly donated by Veolia. Jimmy is a familiar figure around town. Always chatty, this tall man cheerfully braves the thorns of the blackberry bushes to get at seemingly unreachable fruit. He can also be seen at Blatchington Pond on summer Tuesday evenings, where he is responsible for removing bindweed. When it comes to herbs’ Bob’s our man (above). Listen out for him on Seahaven FM from time to time. John our volunteer handyman, was last seen stripping down a bench prior to repainting it, while wife Viv is happy to lend a hand at anything, as is Jordan. Robert is our star structure builder and his wife June is our fundraiser. Come tea break the stars are Jim for his ginger biccies and Steph for her marvellous cakes. Seaford Gardening Club Sadly summer has now ended officially and we must look forward to autumn and the winter months ahead. Hopefully we will get some good weather to tidy the garden and greenhouse. Our hedgehogs will be thinking of hibernating soon – ready for their long sleep. They have been busy collecting slugs and snails to fatten themselves up and there are some cosy corners for them to snuggle down together. Our third outing in July to Waddesdon Manor near Aylesbury was a very enjoyable day and we were blessed with hot weather. The beautiful manor was once owned by the Rothschilds and houses one of the finest collections of French 18th century decorative arts in the world. After viewing the inside of the manor we all had a look round the lovely garden with its parterre, aviary, seasonal displays, walks, fountains and statuary. One intriguing water feature spelt out words as it flowed down – we had to be quick to read the message! In the coach house there was a stunning Roman mosaic on view which was unearthed in Israel in 1996. Quite
an art to transport all of it, piece by piece to display at various venues across the UK. After a welcome cup of tea, ice cream or look round the shop we all climbed back on the coach very tired but content after our day out. Our next talk on Wednesday 22nd October will be our AGM (7pm prompt) followed by a talk by Reg Lanaway entitled “Through the Seasons in the Sussex Woodland”. This meeting is a week earlier than usual so please take note of the date, held at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place (using front door opposite Tesco). Visitors are welcome for a fee of £2 or can join for annual subscription of £10 – no extra charges for 2014/15. Refreshments are available and raffles are held on some evenings. More info can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or by visiting the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. The next few talks of the new season are on Nov 26th – Ian Everest “From the Sussex Ox to Fordson Major”; Jan 28th – Glenda Law ‘Scotland the Beautiful’; Feb 25th – Wing Commander Coulcher “Wordsworth and the Lakes”...a taste of things to come! Hope to see you at one of our evenings, you are very welcome.

Artwave at DriftwooD raises £10,000 for Macmillan What an incredible three weeks of the recent Artwave Open House Festival, which finished on 7th September Geoff Stonebanks and Mark Glassman would like to say thank you so much to all the 965 visitors who came to see the stunning 16 artists work set against the beautiful canvas of Geoff ’s award winning garden in Bishopstone! Whilst their numbers are a little down on the 1,042 people seen in 2013, their spending power was significantly increased. Over the period of the festival they sold an incredible £10,042 worth of art, ranging in price from just £5 up to their top selling piece at £1,200. Geoff commented that, “this is staggering when you compare to previous years’ sales and is virtually double what we did in 2013. He went on to say, “Our busiest days by far were Saturday 23rd August and Saturday 6th September, which is most unusual, as in previous years Sundays have tended to be the busy days!” They sold an amazing £1,000 worth of home made tea and cakes served in the garden on trays in vintage china. Proceeds from these went to Macmillan Cancer Support who Geoff is a registered fundraiser for. He has been raising money for them all summer. Visitors were very generous and donated £540 during Artwave and spent £870 on raffle tickets. A further 300 tickets were sold during the summer, at the National Gardens Scheme openings too. Nine artists had generously donated pieces of their work and the top three prizes were a ceramic vessel priced at £130, given by Chiara Vagnarelli, a carved soapstone cat by Paul Haughney (£50) and framed print by Mark Glassman (£35). The draw was made by Rob Moon, Regional Fundraising Manager for the charity, in the garden on Sunday 7th. Throughout the summer Driftwood has been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Geoff Stonebanks, garden owner, and Chairman of the Driftwood Fundraising Group (which raises money for the charity through the Macmillan Garden Trail and other events in his garden was able to present Rob
48
Moon with a cheque for £10,000, which will go towards the building of the new cancer centre in Brighton. Geoff said, “I want to thank most sincerely, not only the visitors who came to the garden and helped us reach this target, but the artists who donated prizes for the raffle, the 31 garden owners who opened up their gardens back in July for the trail, and the many volunteers who selflessly helped out at all the events both at Driftwood and elsewhere!” Rob Moon said, “Ten thousand pounds is an incredible result and the money will help us build The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, which will offer all round support for people affected by cancer in a calm, friendly and welcoming environment. I would like to say a huge thank you to Geoff Stonebanks and his fantastic team of garden owners, artists and helpers for all their hard work over the last few years, their commitment means we are getting closer to ensuring that no one in Sussex faces cancer alone.” Sarah Coxhill, Sussex’s Fundraising Manger also said, “I just wanted to say how bowled over I was at the extent of the growth of the event, the following, the coverage, the quality and the enthusiasm. I hope you’re feeling proud as punch with yourself and all that you’ve achieved. Rob Moon has specifically asked for a write up about you and your initiative to be shared nationally, and we are also hoping for a piece in the Mac News too. As you know it’s not just the funds you raise but the enormous awareness you raise around the build and which we are in need of. As I’ve often said, the true impact of everything you’ve done and are doing can’t be measured, but please know it makes an outstanding contribution to what we’re trying to do in Sussex.” More details of Geoff ‘s garden exploits and fundraising challenges can be found on his garden website: www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk

Where was this picture taken?
Answer in next month’s issue... This blocked up door once led to the garden of Seaford House, Crouch Lane, whose occupiers included Prime Minister George Canning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson the Victorian Poet Laureate. A few years ago the wall was destroyed but carefully restored to include the blocked door.

Jon is a single parent with two children, 6 and 8. What does your job involve? Day-to-day running of the company and engineers. What do you like best about Seaford? The sea, beach, people, Seaford Primary School, Little Poppets Nursery, both have been a great help to me and the kids love being there, and Seaford Baptist Church. Your favourite film? Meet Joe Black (well you never know). What book are you reading at the moment? No Easy Day by Mark Owen. What is your favourite journey? Going home to Africa Tanzania, Free Fall Parachuting. What makes you sad? Rotary Club of Seaford
Joint Presentations by Rotary Club of Seaford In August 2014 Immediate Past President Michael Logan presented cheques of £650 each to Seaford Lifeguards, Newhaven & District Lifeboat Society, and the Newhaven Station of National Coastwatch Institution. Letters were received from all three organisation, and are summarised below.
From Peter Gwilliam, Chairman (www.seafordlifeguards.org) Several years ago Seaford Lifeguards suffered a burglary which saw a vital piece of training equipment stolen. Seaford Rotary club came to our rescue then, and provided a replacement. Once again Seaford Rotary club has come to the rescue, by making a considerable donation to replace an essential item of equipment that has been found to be beyond economical repair. The generosity and continued support received from the Rotary club enables us at Seaford Lifeguards to maintain our service to the community and continue to offer personal development for our young people. Thank you Rotarians, you are always there when we need you! From Derek Payne, Newhaven & District Lifeboat Society (Committee) On behalf of the R.N.L.I. and in particular the Newhaven Lifeboat station, I would like to express our most grateful and sincere thanks for the magnificent donation of £650 presented to me at the Seaford Rotary Club lunch yesterday. Such generous donations really do help out with the development and maintenance of the local lifesaving work in this area. The continued support from Rotary club members is very much valued and appreciated. May I take this opportunity to wish you and all your Club members every success in the future. From David Crozier, Station Manager, Newhaven NCI, (www.nci.org.uk/newhaven) Thank you, also, for your generous and very welcome cheque in support of the work we do at Newhaven NCI. The money will help greatly towards the replacement of the roof, and addition of safety measures,
62
at our lookout on Castle Hill, Newhaven. The lookout building was erected in the 1960s and is in use 365 days a year by our team in keeping watch over our inshore waters and local coastline. The fabric of the building does need regular maintenance and, occasionally, replacement as well. Your generosity will aid us in continuing our valuable work. Left to right Pete Gwilliam, Derek Payne, IPP Michael Logan, & David Crozier
Seahaven Para Games
On Sunday 10th August the fourth Seahaven Para Games were held at the Downs Leisure Centre. 28 participants took part in Kurling in the morning then, after lunch, there was a new event, Archery, which was very popular, alongside Table Tennis and Bowls (held in a separate room from the Archery for fairly obvious reasons!). The afternoon concluded with the now famous Wheelchair Slalom, which was followed by presentation of certificates and medals to all the participants by our President Ray Hazan, Seaford Mayor Mark Brown, Angus Murray from Sainsbury’s and visiting paralympian Adam Field. As usual it was an excellent day – strictly non-competitive – and there was a great feeling of friendship and goodwill. A big thank you to all the hard work from Sarah Pearce and her team at Wave Leisure for making this all happen, and to all the carers, helpers and supporters for their good work. It was a truly memorable day. See you all next year! Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. 01273 589 444 The choir is a disparate group of over-60s, who simply enjoy singing. Their varied repertoire includes folk songs, standards from the 40s and 50s, and classics from singers such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles from the 70s and 80s. For example, Ralph McTell’s “Streets of London” and “When I’m 64” by the Beatles are firm favourites.

The group meets at 10.30am on Wednesday mornings at the 60+ Club, which is adjacent to the Wave Leisure Centre. We sing for about an hour, and newcomers are always welcome. You don’t have to be able to read music, and don’t even have to be a particularly good singer, but if you enjoy singing, come along and give us a try. Nigel is a talented composer/musician and leader with a wide-ranging musical taste. He has introduced the choir to songs by Madness and the Kinks, but also enjoys some of the old American standards such as Rogers’ and Harts’ “Manhattan”.
The 60+ Club is associated with Age Concern. Contact the Club on 01323 896422.

St James’ Trust (Seaford) Chairman’s Report: 2013–2014 This is the end of what has been, for the Treasurer and me, yet another arduous year both physically and mentally, although thanks to all the other office volunteers a lot of the office admin has been very well covered. I joined St James’ six years ago and am now planning to take a less active role in the day-to-day management, though I will continue to oversee major projects and my duties as Chairman. The treasurer will also be easing up on her dayto-day involvement and we both realise that this leaves a hole that will need filling; I did warn the Trust a year ago. Having reverted to the original plan to sell the Wagon Factory and the adjoining plot (with planning permission) we have had offers and are very hopeful for a quick sale. Once again we have gone through yet another year without being able to carry out any of the vital maintenance work needed to the lift room, the mortuary and the car park, or any decorating, through lack of funds. When the sale is finalised we must rectify all these items. We must also replace the windows in the two upper halls and replace the heaters in the Club House. On a high note, we have managed to replace the kitchen cookers with a more suitable catering cooker and a second hand catering fridge. This will make the keeping and preparing of food a far easier task, and renting out of the kitchen a far more attractive proposition. Needless to say, although the Judge instructed our ex-tenant to pay our costs, the man concerned is still laughing at us and the Judge, and no payment has been received; Civil Law it appears is a toothless bulldog and cannot enforce its decisions. Only the charity has suffered here! I must thank Charles Hooker, ably assisted by Elizabeth, for continuing the music afternoons, despite ill health and Pat Case for arranging the theatre visits. Drivers and escorts under the firm hand of Alan Smith continue to give great service to the Stroke Club and the Tuesday Lunch Club. Our three halls and meeting room are still well used by the local organisations such as Stroke and Hard of Hearing Clubs, keep fit, yoga, one-to-one Counselling, Fountain of Health, drama and dance groups, meetings of all kinds and the odd family party. We still have availability. Our Lunch Club on Tuesday is fully subscribed with a waiting list, and

the Tuesday afternoon Arts and Crafts group is still going strong. Age UK Toenail Cutting and NHS Hearing Aid Battery supplies are still available on the first and third Friday of each month. If you are interested in any of these telephone: 01323 492800 or email: informationsjt@gmail. com Viv Reynolds has continued her drive for funds from major providers and has one promising donor in her sights. Our heartfelt thanks once again go out to Steve Silver of Inside Out Building Services, who has on several occasions rushed in at short notice to sort out problems using his skills as a general handy man to our advantage. Our Car Park and other outside areas are now looking great thanks to Gerry MacInally who is doing a fantastic job removing weeds, dog ends and other detritus from our grounds. Frankie Good and Joint Manager Yvonne Teubert with their team have done a great job with the shop once again this year and takings are up. Frankie has now handed over the shop management to Yvonne. At the Drop In Jean Staff and her volunteers have kept things going for another year in spite of rising costs and falling takings, so thanks to them. Pat Case organised the Sainsbury’s Collections, which brought in much needed funds; many thanks to all those who took part. I said last year, we need to find at least two new Trustees and we have one; James Austin of Seaford Martello Rotary Club has stepped up and joined the Trustees in January 2014. We now have five trustees. The Trustees strongly feel that if the trust is to move forward and to continue for another 10 years we must look at the way it is managed. We can no longer rely on well meaning volunteers to do a full time unpaid job. We will employ a paid manager to oversee the day-to-day running in conjunction with the office volunteers as soon as the sale of the Wagon Factory is completed. Sadly we lost several members over the year I am sure they are all missed and fondly remembered. A big THANK YOU is due to all the volunteers who have helped us stagger through yet another year. As usual we are short of volunteers to help in the Office, Lunch Club on Tuesday, Charity Shop and the Drop In. If you can help telephone: 01323 492800 or email: informationsjt@gmail. com Thanks also go to the people of Seaford who continue to support St James’ Trust and our works. Bryan Turner, Chairman

Could this be the future for Seaford?
Newhaven was not so lucky as 50 houses and 10 business premises were flooded. More worryingly, the railway line was closed for nearly four days. with over £1 millon damage to signalling equipment. Seaford was protected by the shingle beach, which has to be maintained, at an annual cost of £300,000, by the Environment Agency’s contractors moving large amounts of shingle. Last winter, many other parts of the country suffered serious flooding and there were widespread demands for more money to be spent on flood defences. We can expect much pressure to reduce the money spent on Seaford’s flood defences in future.
For answers, and an opportunity to make your voice heard, come to a meeting at 7pm on Friday 24th October at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford. Last winter a series of bad storms removed much of the shingle from the beach and hence removed a large part of Seaford’s sea defences. Flood warnings were issued to some residents. Fortunately, the series of storms did not continue and there was no serious flooding.

Sea levels are presently rising and climate change will accelerate this. The frequency and severity of storms that hit our coasts will greatly increase flood risk. Seaford, Newhaven, the Ouse Valley and Lewes have been fortunate in being part of a project co-funded by the European Union (known as Coastal Communities Project 2150). The project looked at the impact of rising sea levels and the increased risk of more frequent storm surges. Options were developed by the project team to illustrate different ways of adapting to the increased risks of flooding. The traditional approaches of building higher sea walls and river banks will not always be sustainable in the future. Arrangements have been made for four key speakers to give presentations and answer questions at a meeting on 24th October. They will cover: • A national perspective (Norman Baker MP) • John Gower, Environment Agency’s Coastal Communities 2150 Project Team leader, will demonstrate, using computer modelling, the possible impact of rises in sea level and options for adapting to such rises. • Kim Smith, Team Leader Partnership and Strategic Overview for Flood Risk Management. will describe last year’s flooding and outline the Environment Agency’s strategies to address such problems in future in Seaford and Newhaven. • Planning for flooding events (Ian Hodgson, Resilience and Emergency Partnership) This is an important subject for the future of Seaford, (and Newhaven) and you are encouraged to attend and make your voice heard.

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN & SEAFORD LIONS CLUB When the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Mark Brown, as a trustee of the Citizens Advice Bureau, wrote to us about the CAB Seaford Bureau’s need for new computers, our Lions immediately sprang to their support and we purchased a £500 computer for them. Did you know that the Citizens Advice Bureau has over 10% of the population passing through its doors each year? It has outreaches in the other towns our club serves (Newhaven & Peacehaven) as well as an office in Lewes. The service is run largely by volunteers offering free, confidential and impartial advice on all subjects from money to employment, benefits to housing, consumer problems and
much more. So we were pleased to be able to help them to do what we do – serve the community. With more volunteers they could open longer and see even more people. Shame about our Donkey Derby in Seaford – we could have held a regatta on the field I’m told! Fortunately, because of all the support we had from the people of Seaford, adverts in the programme and the buying of the programme we covered our costs so the donations we give out during the year will not be reduced by much. I would like to thank you all for your support and wish we could have put it on later, but we have a busy month in September with a barbeque, book sale, lifeboat trip and presentation, also a Diabetes testing day in Peacehaven (20th September) as we said last month. More of this next month. We had our annual barbeque at the Plough and Harrow, who always do us proud. This was attended by about 30 Lions and friends, and although it was a wet start the weather brightened for us, so unlike the Donkey Derby we had a wonderful time outside. We also attended the Lionesses “Posh Tea” at Seaford Golf Club. The Club meet at 8.00pm on the fourth Friday of each month at the White Lion Hotel. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, i.e. if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Photo: CAB Operations Manager Sarah Cormac receiving the computer from Lion President, Trevor Gomersall.

WHAT’S oN at the Hop? Life is a Beach BY Mark GlassMAN
Exhibition: Sat 4th to Thurs 16th October Open: Mon to Sat 10.30am – 4pm Sun 12 noon – 4pm His recent paintings are an on-going dialogue between his vision and the Sussex landscape that surrounds him, where he continues to experiment with the fluid and textural qualities of paint, abstracted forms and graphic simplicity, based on feeling and observation. His work as an artist (painter) and photographer are intertwined, reflecting his fascination with expressive colour, landscape and the transformation of form. In 2014, he was also selected for the East Sussex Open at the Towner Gallery, short-listed for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014, selected for the Artwave Threadneedle Prize
Seaford National Trust Association After a summer break the National Trust Seaford Association (NTSA) recommences its monthly meetings on Wednesday 15th October at Cross Way, Steyne Road, Seaford at 2.30pm. The talk will be “Lewes to Lewis” (A Hebridean Journey) by David C. Lang. New members (including non-NT members) are welcome. For further information about the NTSA visit our website on www.seaford-sussex.co.uk. Note to members: Good news! The “Christmas Lights” outing has been over-subscribed so a further trip is planned for Thursday, 27th November! There has been re-jigging of members wanting to go on the trips, therefore a few places are now available on both coaches. STORMLIGHT: New Monochrome Landscapes Of Sussex & Northumberland BY CHRISTOPHER KNOX
Exhibition: Sat 18th to Sun 26th October Open: Mon to Sat 10.30am – 5pm Sun 12 noon – 5pm. In his first solo exhibition, at the Hop Gallery in Lewes, landscape artist and printmaker Christopher Knox will be showing 40 new monochrome landscape and cityscapes from on location in his native Northumberland and his home county of Sussex. Atmospheric black and white images have been heavily influenced by spending time on the wild Northumberland coast where the light and weather can change within a fleeting moment. The exhibition will include sketches, prep work and finished etching plates to help explain Christopher’s printmaking process, while Christopher will discuss his work with gallery visitors on the preview evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on 18th October 2014. Christopher has had works accepted in the 2013 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Society of British Artists’ Annual Show and The Royal Pastel Society Annual Exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries. In 2013, Christopher was elected to the Society of Graphic Fine Art.

The Synergy Theatre presents ‘Our Town’ The Synergy Theatre returns to The Clinton Centre with the opening production of its 2014/2015 Season, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Our Town.
Our Town
By arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.
by Thornton Wilder
Grovers Corners is a small town, hidden away in New England, where the fences are white picket, the front doors are always open and everyone knows their neighbours. The car has yet to be invented – but it won’t be long! – and life is gentle and unhurried. Two young people, George and Emily, are in the same class at the local school. As they grow, they realise that they are falling in love. The whole town turns out to celebrate their marriage and to send them on their way to a new future together. In Our Town, we meet all the characters that once dominated community life in America – the drugstore manager (who lets George have the strawberry milkshakes he needs to “woo” Emily ‘on the slate’), the kindly local doctor, the newspaper editor (who only publishes the truth...), the pastor and the church organist, the archivist... People who know their town and who love it for its simplicity. As always, we are delighted to be welcoming back some familiar Synergy faces and those making their Synergy debuts. The cast is led by Alan Lade as The Stage Manager, with Josh Impey and Peter Linsdell as the fathers, Mr. Webb and Dr. Gibbs, alongside Becky Robinson and Donna Vaughan as their wives. Veteran Seaford actor, John Hamilton, is joining us once more to play the town’s resident academic, Professor Willard, while the two central roles of George and Emily are played by Chris Church and Isabella McCarthy Somerville – both young actors appeared in our summer production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. They are supported by a host of talented local actors to create the Grovers Corners community. Our Town will play at The Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, on Tuesday 28th October to Saturday 1st November, at 7.30pm each evening. Tickets, £10/£8 (concessions), are available from the Company’s box office on 01273 301444, from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, by email on boxoffice@ thesynergytheatre.co.uk or through the website,

Seahaven Lioness Club Many of us like an opportunity to dress up a bit, especially on a sunny summer afternoon and that opportunity presented itself when Seahaven Lioness Club hosted a “posh tea” at Seaford Golf Club on Tuesday 18th August. The Golf Club provided cups of tea and a lovely variety of sandwiches, while the Lionesses had been busy making a sumptuous spread of cakes and scones. About 80 people, mostly ladies, but quite a few men as well, came along to enjoy the tea. The event was in aid of LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal), which fundraises and to buy much needed equipment for the blood research department at Kings College Hospital in London, where they are doing ground-breaking work on the causes and treatment of blood disorders such as leukaemia and myeloma. Lion John Taylor gave a short presentation about the charity. There was a raffle with some splendid prizes, many supplied by (i.e. begged from!) local shops and businesses, which was very well supported. The
Lionesses are grateful to all those businesses who helped out in this way: Absolute Beauty, Cakes & Cookies, Cooper & Son Funeral Directors, Daisy Chain Interiors, David Jordan Estate Agents, Foam & Fabric, Kams Nail Salon, Minnie Boutique/Z Jewellery, Real Deli, Strandz Hair Design, Trawlers Fish Restaurant Various loose ends are still being tied up financially but it looks like the event will make close to £500 for LIBRA. Saturday 4th October will be (weather permitting) the last Saturday stall of the year. Thank you to all who have supported us this summer and we are still willing to collect any items you may wish to donate for sale next year. October is also the month of our big social event of the year – Lionesses are not all about hard work! This is when we celebrate the anniversary of the formation of the club, 21 years ago this year. This time we are joining with Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions Club, who will be celebrating 45 years, and will be meeting up at Dean’s Place Hotel in Alfriston for a Sunday lunch. These events, like all Lionesses and Lions’ administrative and social activities, are paid for by the members themselves. All the money you, the public, spend at our fundraising events goes to good causes.

LATE SUMMER SUNSHINE STEW
by Julian O’Vegetables
After August’s meat fest, I thought it was time to do something veggie. So in keeping with the O’Vegetables philosophy of using things that are cheap and cheerful, here’s a dish that uses the best of the summer veg that’s so plentiful at this time of year. Like me, you may even have some of these growing in your garden. Ratatouille is a vegetable stew from the South of France and its ingredients vary according to the many recipes you may find on the internet. Jamie Oliver includes fennel in his. Yuk! But don’t let me put you off experimenting with whatever veg you like. Here’s one I’ve done many times before:
Ingredients (serves 4): 2 large aubergines, 4 small courgettes, 2 red or yellow peppers (for the colour), 6 large ripe tomatoes, 3 tbsp olive oil, fresh basil, 1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced, 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed. Always use fresh herbs whenever you can. A potted basil plant will last for a month or more on a kitchen window sill if looked after. Pick off the leaves as you need them. Wash and trim all the veg. De-seed the peppers and cut into strips. Quarter the aubergines lengthways, then cut into 1-inch chunks. Cut the courgettes into 1-inch chunks too. Score the tomatoes with a sharp knife, place in a bowl, and pour boiling water over them. When the skins start to separate from the flesh, put them into cold water to stop them cooking. Peel off the skins, quarter them, then scoop out the pips and pith with a spoon. Roughly chop. Fry the onion and garlic in the olive oil on a medium heat until the onion is soft but not brown. Add the aubergine, courgettes and peppers, and cook for 10 minutes or so, turning the vegetables regularly. The mixture in the pan may look a little dry, but trust me, don’t add water. Add the chopped tomatoes and some torn up basil leaves. As you stir in the tomatoes, they will give up their juice into the dish. Tear up some more basil leaves and sprinkle over before serving. Freshly prepared food is always best, but I find Ratatouille freezes and re-heats reasonably well. So make lots of the stuff and store for the winter. Enjoy! Out and about in October
Berries and nuts are good things to look out for at this time of the year. There may still be some rich brown hazel nuts in gardens and hedgerows if the squirrels haven’t had them all. Bright red hawthorn berries (above) have been around since late August, becoming a dark wine colour as the autumn draws on. You’ll find them in gardens, hedgerows and up on Seaford Head. They provide an important source of winter food for many birds, including the redwing (left) – a small thrush which visits the UK in the winter to feed. Sloes are the fruit of the blackthorn tree. Like the hawthorn berries they have been about since August, gradually going from blue to black. If you are ever tempted to make slow gin with them, do please leave plenty for the birds. There are blackthorn trees on Seaford Head. A less familiar shrub also found on the Head is the wayfarer tree (right). Its berries come in bright red clusters and turn black over the autumn. They are another good source of food for birds and, unlike sloes, there is no competition for them – they taste very unpleasant to people. “Wayfarer tree” is such a lovely name – apparently given to the shrub by the 16th century botanist, John Gerard, because it was so common along the lanes of southern England.

Seaford Kurlers Seaford Kurlers have had a good sunny summer as have all of us. Although this is now October, I am writing this before we have had September’s weather. I hope the cold rainy end to August does not continue. Never let you down do I? I always begin with the good British talking point – the weather! We have had a very successful time at this year’s Paragames event at Wave Leisure. Held every year in conjunction with a number of caring local organisations who, between them, fund the whole day. Wave Leisure hosts the event, many sports clubs supervise the games that are played and Seaford Kurlers take care of the New Age Kurling section. Wave Leisure has kindly donated £50 towards the club’s funds as a thank you for our help.
Bob was disabled but despite all his problems, was determined to achieve as much as possible plus a lot extra. His achievements prompted us to create this award in his memory. Bob sadly died on 28th July, 2010.
On 4th September 2014 Seaford Kurlers took a coach trip to Rye Market and had lunch at the Kettle o’ Fish We will be having our AGM in October and the restaurant near Rye Harbour. The weather was fantastic Officers and committee will be up for election. We and the market was well worth a visit. The Crouch Bowling Club The Crouch Bowling Club, Seaford enjoyed, a magnificent game versus Lindfield Bowling Club in the final of the Gladys Rowland Competition at Burgess Hill. Both sides were at their very best, and an extra end was necessary to decide a winner by one shot. Crouch won by 19 – 18 with a team comprising Ann Marden; Daphne Hemmings; Pat Budd and Sylvia Kellaway (skip). June Beven and Sandy Richards were reserves, and both played in one of the earlier games. To reach the finals Crouch had to beat Seaford; Woodingdean; Adastra; Isle of Thorns and Steyning Bowling Clubs, most of which were very close games. Many congratulations to all concerned.’

Theatre Hosts Three Shows In One Week Most theatre directors would admit that it’s a stressful business to manage weeks of rehearsals, source props and costumes and keep all the cast happy enough to bring a show to the stage, so spare a thought for Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors’ director, Paula Woolven, who is bringing not one, but three separate shows and casts to the Barn Theatre, Seaford, this October.
three brand new circus-themed shows to be performed from 6th – 12th October 2014. Chairman Shar Turnbull said, “The Lloyds Bank Community Fund will enable us to keep the Barn warm for the winter – having our own community building is a double edged sword – we are extremely grateful for having a stable base for all our users, but with it comes inevitable overheads which are a considerable cost, maintaining and repairing a building on an ongoing basis.” The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people have a positive impact at the heart of their community. Seaford Museum is also up for a potential grant from the Lloyds scheme. Members of the public can vote online, by SMS or Twitter, or in a branch of Lloyds bank from 2nd September to 10th October 2014. The local good cause that receives most votes in each community will receive an award of £3,000, with the other groups receiving £2,000, £1,000 or £500, depending on the votes received. You can cast your vote for Seaford Musical Theatre in three ways. Go to: https://lly-cf.co.uk/LLH and vote online, tweet: #COMMFUND LLH @SeafordMT on twitter or text: VOTE LLH to 61119 To find out more about Seaford Musical Theatre visit: www.seafordmusicaltheatre.co.uk

Seaford Town Council is bowled over at Crouch Bowling Club! Thursday 4th September saw the annual Council versus Crouch Bowling Club match take place, followed by supper, friendly banter and a sharing of stories. Councillors, Council Staff, the Young Mayor, Deputy Young Mayor and families, donned their flat shoes to take part in the mixed team bowls game. With each team consisting of an equal amount of Council players and Bowling Club players, the games were highly competitive and the final result was incredibly close with just a handful of points in it. The Crouch Bowling Club leases their grounds from Seaford Town Council within the peaceful and picturesque setting of the Crouch Gardens. The Club was first started in 1935 and next year will be celebrating its 80th anniversary. With over 90 members the club has a lot to offer during the bowling season from May to September. Members
can enjoy the social aspect, the team atmosphere and camaraderie, the gentle physical exercise from playing (did you know that 18 overs of an outdoor bowls match will have you walking over one mile!) and the competitive challenge when trying to judge your bias and the weight behind your woods! Bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. Certainly the most famous story in lawn bowls is from July 1588 when Sir Francis Drake was involved in a game at Plymouth Hoe and was notified that the Spanish Armada were approaching. His immortalised response was that, “We still have time to finish the game and to thrash the Spaniards, too.” He then proceeded to finish the match, which he lost, before embarking on the fight with the Armada, which he won. (Whether this famous story really took place has been heavily debated!). Anyone interested in joining Crouch Bowling Club or wanting further information can visit the Club’s website on www.seafordcrouchbowlingclub.co.uk or contact the Club Secretary, Brian Bodsworth, on brian.bodsworth@btinternet.com or 01323 896344. Running Commentary... How does someone, described as an ‘ordinary’ person achieve something that is extraordinary? Just ask Jo Pavey, who won gold in the 10,000 metres at the European Athletics Championships in August at the age of 40, and having given birth to her second child only 10 months previously. There are countless other instances, but not at international level, of runners setting PBs or achieving their peak performance in their forties or fifties, so it must be assumed therefore, that runners, like good wines, mature with age! If you see yourself as having a nose for distance and a slightly nutty character or perhaps light and fruity with a hint of off-road woodiness, or maybe full-bodied with joie-de-vivre in abundance, then pop the cork and go for another run, but this time, make it a little further, with a dash of extra speed. It must also be remembered that in those same European Championships there were also new names appearing on the medals sheet, and some barely half Jo’s age, so my hope is that it will have inspired more people, young and older to get out and run. Just a week after the Championships, the two Alfriston Water Meadows

SEAFORD CLASSES
MERCREAD YOUTH CLUB, SEAFORD MON 6-7pm FITSTEPS... Dance fitness class that’s strictly fun! No partnering. TUES & THURS 10-11am ZUMBA... Shimmy your way to fitness
Fun Runs were held. It was a sunny day with only a light wind and everyone from first to last seemed to pace themselves well and finished strongly. The 1.6km race which was for junior runners was won by twelve-year old local resident, Rex Lane, in a time of 6mins, 06secs while the 5.3km race, which was open to seniors as well, produced the surprise of the day with 13-yearold Ben Martin from Seaford crossing the line first in a remarkable time of 20mins, 55secs, followed closely by Gareth Hutchinson and Paul Heywood, with Kate Chitty, the first lady to finish. Our future athletic stars are at the moment still ‘ordinary’ people, perhaps jogging the pavements and footpaths of Seaford. With that in mind, this month there’s a host of events to attract every calibre of runner, beginning with the offroad Lewes (tough) 5 miler or (very tough) 10 miler on Sunday 5th. The following Sunday there’s a 10km event in Eastbourne. The route is two laps of the seafront, which ought to mean it’s flat but don’t bank on it. Alternatively, you may consider entering the Hickstead Gallop, which is definitely a running race (no horses are required) and has everything from a 700m race for the under-9s to an 8km race for the seniors. On Sunday 19th there is the Steepdown Challenge at Lancing which offers a 1 mile and 5 mile race but don’t be fooled by the name of the event because it’s bound to go steep up as well. On the same day as the Beachy Head Marathon (Saturday 25th) there’s a 10km race too, which takes place as soon as the Marathon has set off. It mustn’t be forgotten that there are also 5km Park Runs held on every Saturday through October and every other month in Eastbourne and Brighton. All these events are the perfect training ground for building strength and stamina, increasing your basic speed and top speed, and importantly, raising your aspirations.
