CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS We have said a reluctant goodbye to our seemingly endless summer, and, as the leaves of autumn started to fall, some of the rooms in church and village halls and community centres began to ring with the sounds of singing. With sharpened pencils made ready to mark newly distributed music scores, enthusiastic members of many choirs eagerly looked forward to the challenge of learning their new parts. Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses sang out their notes to long-suffering musical directors and accompanying pianists around the East Sussex coastlands. With an eye to Christmas performances, week on week the warbling members rehearse and rehearse, until, amazingly, the parts meld together into vocal pieces worthy of sharing with their paying audiences.
One such gathering of enthusiastic singers is a choir which has sung together for nearly 10 years – Concentus. Aptly the word Concentus. means agreement, harmony and unity and this defines the very spirit of the choir, which has been led from its formation both zealously and skilfully by its musical director, Adrian White. This friendly choir gathers to practice every Monday evening at 7.30pm at Upperton United Reform Church, Upperton Road, Eastbourne. Concentus. is made up of members with a wide range of musical abilities, and new members are always welcome – you don’t need to be able to read music to join (telephone Evelyn on 01323 643358). All that is required is the ability to hold a note, an enthusiasm to learn, and a willingness to chuckle at Adrian’s jokes! Members come from Seaford as well as from Eastbourne, with singers from Seaford car-sharing to rehearsals. Come and hear Concentus. perform a variety of Christmas pieces both modern and traditional, at their ‘Concentus sings Christmas’ concert, at 5pm on Saturday, 13th December, at St Leonard’s Church, Church Road, Seaford. Tickets cost £10 (£5 for under-16s) and can be obtained from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, 53 Church Road, Seaford. Or hear it in Eastbourne at 4pm on 20th December at St Saviour’s and St Peter’s Church, South Street, Eastbourne. Tickets for both concerts available from the Eastbourne Tourist Information Office, or from Evelyn on 01323 643358. Find out more about the choir at www.concentuschorale.com

Bangers, Burgers & Boats at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club What’s your guilty pleasure? That’s what The Galley Café at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club are tempting you with! Following on from last month’s breakfast review, I am now being tempted by the ‘Guilty Pleasures’ menu at The Galley Café, the perfect venue for cold and blustery, winter days – on November 5th, the café was warm, inviting and bustling with happy customers. Catering for both meateaters and vegetarians, there is a choice of a large, 8oz burger – made locally with best English beef, served in a sourdough bap with a not-too-spicy ‘Galley’s own’ roasted tomato and chilli chutney (top photo), or a delicious top notch sausage, locally sourced and served with juicy fried onions in a baguette; my favourite is the delicious roasted sweet potato with melted brie, served in ciabatta (bottom photo). All very tempting, generous portions and reasonably priced. Children’s portions are also available – there’s a 4oz beef burger and a smaller version of the sausage in French bread. The Galley chef, Steve Mitchell, will also be offering a special lunch box for children soon, which will include a sandwich lunch along with activities and colouring pencils – watch this space for the launch date! Tea, freshly ground coffee, juices and other soft drinks are available whatever the weather, as are licensed drinks from midday. Dogs are also most welcome and there are free doggie treats too! So why not stop by and indulge in a Galley’s Guilty Pleasure? You won’t regret it. The Galley at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Entry is from the car park on Marine Drive (next to the Buckle Holiday Park) or from the beach.

MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB Food Boxes for families in crisis
The Martello Rotary Club started this project in December 2012, in partnership with local charity WAVES, and Rotarian Jim Austin gave a presentation to club members on how things are progressing, together with Ray Finch from Waves. The scheme continues to help families in crisis in Seaford by providing a box of non-perishable food items where perhaps changes have taken place in family circumstances and they are struggling to feed their children, or perhaps at school holiday time when extra meals have to be found. The boxes contain known brands and have been specially chosen as they require low power and basic cooking requirements to produce a meal, they are also nutritional. Some special treats such as Easter eggs and Christmas crackers are included at appropriate times. In the year to July 2014, 43 boxes were provided to Waves for distribution, and since July there have been 15 with more to come in the months ahead. The Martello Rotary Club buys the food with money raised in Seaford and we are always seeking help by way of donations for this very worthy project – why not consider donating your heating allowance? If you can help, do please get in touch.
PROMS NIGHT 2014
The 11th annual Proms Concert organised by the Club took place at Seaford Head Community College on Sat 11th October. As always, this was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by not only the audience but all those who participated in it. Seaford Silver Band conducted by Lewis Delivett formed the corner stone of the event and they were joined by Maeve Jenkinson (violinist, left) who performs regularly with the London Philharmonic and is Musical Director of the Corelli

Ensemble, and Rebecca Swingle Putland, (below) the Director of Outreach at Moira House Girls School in Eastbourne. These artists were accompanied by firm favourites the Moira House Girls School Choir, (above). under the direction of Martin Neill and accompanied by Robert Cousins from the school. The girls sang a variety of songs including, by request from President Dave Winsor, Pie Jesu, and a World War One Medley. As in previous years, the evening concluded with rousing choruses of Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Sussex by the Sea and Jerusalem. Joining in the fun were the Mayor and Mayoress of Seaford, Councillor Mark Brown and his wife Vera, together with Mr Norman Baker MP and Lord Healey with his daughter. Club President Dave Winsor said, “ Thank you to everyone who supported us with this event, this forms part of our fund raising which enables us to donate to local good causes, and the Club is very grateful as it enables us to help those less fortunate than most of us.”
TAVERN IN THE TENT
In the September edition we gave a report on the various events that we had attended in 2014 with the Tavern in The Tent. We would like to clarify that the operation of the Tavern at the Armed Forces Day in June and the RNLI Fête in July were joint events with the Rotary Club of Seaford. The Martello Rotary Club meets on Monday evenings at Seaford Golf Club and welcomes new members. For more information email: plbseaford@aol.com or call 01323 894553 or 07802 305158.

Animation project hits the Filmspot at the Crypt Gallery During the October half term the Arts@theCrypt galleries played host to the national Big Draw event. Organised by committee member, Nicky Auster, children of all ages were involved in producing drawings for backgrounds and characters for an animation entitled “Animate Our World”. Rob Cunnigham and Rachel Hunter of local film project, Filmspot, asked participants to draw landscapes based on the downs, forests, town and coastline in and around Seaford, which they then stitched together. Many of the participants also created flick books of animation loops, which they digitised, to bring our animated world to life! Filmspot

was established in 2009 by Rob Cunningham and Rachel Hunter. The project is a year-round, touring celebration of cinema. We create temporary ‘pop-up’ cinemas in unusual and heritage venues – as well as organising other cinema-related activities, such as lectures, workshops and interactive installations. Some may remember Filmspot being involved in a cinematic presentation as part of the 150 year celebration of the Brighton to Seaford branch line. Filmspot were kept busy all day by over seventy visitors but were ably assisted by Nicky, Pauline Harris from the Friends of the Crypt and local book illustrator Jo Brown. Jo Has been involved in Arts@theCrypt Big Draw events in the past more of her work can be found on her website www.jo-brown.co.uk. Following post production editing the finished film, complete with Penguin Café sound track kindly donated free of copyright fees by Arthur Jeffes, was screened on Saturday 1st November to an eager audience of parents and their budding animators. It can still be viewed online at www.filmspot. org.uk and http:// www.youtube.com/ watch?v=G2QcAzJ1D00; as you will see a thoroughly entertaining outcome. Keeping it Real! I live in a house that is divided. My husband loves real Christmas trees but in recent years I’ve talked him around to the artificial option, believing – incorrectly as it turns out – that a reusable tree is better for the planet than one that is chopped down and discarded after a few weeks. Most artificial trees are made from PVC – one of the most non-renewable, polluting, unrecyclable materials around – and consequently their carbon footprint is ten times greater than that of real ones. Shocked into realising that my fake tree is not the morally correct choice I thought, I’m now keen to join the six million Brits who opt for a real tree at Christmas. Christmas trees spring up all over the place from late November and the quality varies greatly. Before you make your choice, do a bit of fact finding about its freshness. Ask where it was grown (UK produced trees are likely to be fresher), how long it has been in stock and when it was cut. You can carry out a couple of tests yourself. Give the tree a firm tap on the ground or run a closed hand over
its branches. If lots of needles fall off, chances are it’s not that fresh. You can also try bending the outer branches. They should be pliable – not brittle and dry – without discoloration. Before leaving to make your purchase, measure the height and width of your space and take a tape measure with you to check your tree. Most are trimmed to an 80% taper, which means that a 10-foot-tall tree will measure 8 feet at the bottom. You should also consider how you plan on decorating your tree. The three main species – spruce, fir and pine – all have their own characteristics. Spruces and firs have short needles whilst a pine’s are long. Pine branches tend to bend, making them unsuitable for heavier ornaments. Firs have lush branches and ornaments sometimes get lost in them. The traditional British Christmas tree, the Norway spruce, is attractive but tends to drop its needles. An alternative is a “non-drop” variety like the popular Nordmann fir, which will last longer but is more expensive.

To care for your tree, cut off half an inch from the base of the trunk and place in a water-holding stand. Position the tree away from sources of heat and keep it topped up with fresh water. At present, 90% of real trees end up in landfill, so after Christmas is over try and recycle! By turning your tree into wood chippings or compost you will continue to do your bit for the environment. Hopefully with this guide choosing the family tree will be a holiday highlight, not a headache! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Toys For Boys??
My sister and I grew up with an older brother and we thought nothing of spending Saturday afternoons sprawled on the living room carpet, constructing items out of his beloved Lego. His creations were always more ambitious and sophisticated than ours of course – windmills and tractors and mansions with masses of rooms compared with our rather mundane boxlike structures. Occasionally we would ditch the Lego for a session on his Scalextric racing set. We hadn’t a hope of winning, but we certainly enjoyed trying! It never once occurred to me that I was playing with ‘boy toys’ which is maybe why, when I became mother to four daughters, I happily bought them their own sets of Lego along with other ‘boyish’ toys such as remote control cars, science sets and basketball nets (they had their fair share of dolls, prams and jewellery kits too). Like it or not, the society we live in stereotypes children according to their gender. Manufacturers influence their choice of toys with labels identifying items such as dolls and tea sets as ‘girl toys’ in their pretty pink packaging, and cars and construction sets as ‘boy toys’ in their predominantly blue wrappers.
if children are offered a wide range of toys and experiences, they will develop into more rounded individuals with an expanded range of thinking and skills. Just as playing with girltoys such as dolls and tea sets fosters the development of verbal and social skills that might be useful to the male population, playing with boy-toys such as cars can help girls with the acquisition of spatial skills. Other ‘boy-toys’ like science sets, Lego, Meccano and K’nex help develop STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills of which there is currently a shortage in the UK workforce – and why shouldn’t girls develop these just as much as their male counterparts?! Some may argue – and I’m probably one of them – that at the end of the day, whether male or female, children will be children and will naturally choose the toys that interest them the most. The important thing is to at least give them that choice! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
There is evidence to suggest that girls and boys do naturally select different types of toys. Experiments conducted on primates concluded that male monkeys were drawn to boy-toys such as cars whilst female monkeys preferred girl-toys such as dolls. There are various explanations about why boys and girls have different toy preferences. One theory suggests it is due to testosterone levels, whilst another attributes it to the way the brains are ‘differently-wired’, and there’s no doubt that nurture and socialisation also play a part. Regardless of the reason, the consensus of opinion is that

From East Africa to East Sussex – author publishes first novel Anne Holderness, a resident of Sutton Drove, Seaford, has recently published her first novel,The Mountains of Morogoro, as a paperback and eBook. The novel is the story of Esme, a young Scottish woman. Her first trip abroad is a one-way ticket, her infant daughter in her arms, to be with her Tanzanian husband, Martin Yusufu, in his homeland in East Africa. The time is 1968, shortly after Tanzania’s independence from British rule, and although made welcome in her new home, Esme faces huge language and cultural barriers as she strives to integrate into her new surroundings. Over the span of twenty years we follow her struggles while raising two children, finding and holding down jobs, coping with shortages of basic necessities, making friends, and joining the endeavour for women’s equality. Eventually she becomes involved in the creation of a rural project in the mountains of Morogoro, while her search for fulfilment leads her into situations which jeopardise the custody of her children. This is the story of Esme as she gradually falls in love with the country – its peaceable people and its landscapes – while searching for her own identity. Anne, until recently working with the NHS, is currently a tutor of English to speakers of other languages. For many years she has been a member of an East Sussex wide writing group who have supported her throughout the process of writing and publishing the novel. Anne also belongs to the U3A, Seaford Ramblers, Just Voices and a Seaford-based book group.

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN & SEAFORD LIONS CLUB October is the month when we can relax a bit, though we were still busy with running the club and dealing with requests and spending the money we had raised during the summer. The photo shows a donation to Waves, Seaford. This is a support group for Seaford families and we donated £300 so that they can update their computer finance programme. We were also pleased to donate £1,000 to the Mayor of Telscombe who is raising money for an all singing and dancing wheelchair for Leisha. The total cost of this special wheelchair is in excess £20,000 and will help Leisha to stand and overcome some of the problems caused by cerebral palsy. The new chair is made to fit Leisha’s body, and will see her through adulthood as it can be adjusted as she grows. It will allow her to pick things up off the floor, sit at a normal height table with able bodied children at school and stand in a full upright position. This will help build the muscles back up in Leisha’s legs and give her more freedom, which could reduce the carers required at school and give Leisha the independence she craves. The 22nd October was the date of the Autumn Tints trip. We took 60 pensioners on a trip through the beautiful countryside of Sussex, admiring the autumn colours. We ended up in Bodle Street Green and were given a cream tea by the local WI. A good day was had by all. On the 19th we had our “birthday” party, our charter lunch at Dean’s Place Hotel, Alfriston. It is 45 years since the club was formed – I wonder how many services we have performed in that time! We celebrated with the

Seahaven Lioness Club On 10th September the Lionesses once again worked with the manager and staff of M & Co in Seaford to put on a Charity Fashion Show, giving the public the opportunity to see some of the shop’s new autumn and winter ranges (right). The models were drawn from the staff of M & Co and the Lionesses, together with some of their family members, and also included the Deputy Young Mayor of Seaford. They encompassed a wide variety of ages and sizes, so hopefully there was something for everyone! Ticketholders were given a glass of wine on arrival and some tasty nibbles were on offer as well. Everyone was invited to take part in the raffle to boost the takings for the charities involved and this was well supported. The first half of the show displayed some casual outfits for both adults and children, and included coats and accessories. The second half showcased more formal or glam items. During the interval the raffle was drawn and some information given about the two charities being supported – Cancer Research (nominated by M & Co) and the Rocking Horse Appeal (nominated by the Lionesses), which raises money for medical equipment, developmental aids and some home comforts for sick children at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit in Brighton. The event made a profit of a little over £450, which was a very good result, and this will be divided between the two charities. Thanks to all who supported the Fashion Show and to Matt, and his staff at M & Co for their hard work in putting it on and for donating some raffle prizes. Thanks also to Wave Leisure for the loan of chairs and NPS Lions for transporting them. The last Sunday in September a few Lionesses joined with some Lions and various friends and family members for a trip out on Newhaven Lifeboat. (left) Both Clubs have a long association with the RNLI, always supporting their summer fête and holding fundraising events for them, but
46
this trip was offered in return for personal donations by those taking part. It was a glorious day with a calm sea, so no drama or seasickness to spoil the outing! At the beginning of October Seahaven Lionesses provided afternoon tea for the Inner Light Club of Seaford, giving their regular helpers, who normally do the catering, a bit of a break. Most of the Lionesses made sandwiches, scones or cakes and four members were on hand on the afternoon to serve the tea and clear up. Just to prove it’s not all hard work in the Lionesses, on Sunday 19th October the Club members celebrated their Formation Anniversary by hosting a lunch jointly with Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions Club at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston. They were pleased to welcome families and friends as well as representatives of many other local Lions and Lioness Clubs. It was a largely informal event with a minimum of speeches and a very nice meal. The photo above shows Lioness Maggie Chitty (left) being presented with a certificate for 20 years service by the National Lioness Chairman, Lyn Hadrill. The following day the Lionesses were involved in a very different activity. As part of the Zone Olympics competition, where each Club (6 Lions Clubs and 1 Lioness Club) hosts a competitive event, we were playing Toad in the Hole, organised by Lewes Lions Club. For the uninitiated about this very local game the idea is to throw four metal discs on to a special small table top and hopefully into a hole in the middle, which is only slightly larger than the discs. It’s challenging, but always good fun, even though we didn’t score very well! The next fundraising event is a Lucky Receipt Draw in Morrisons on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th December. For a payment of just £1 your name will be entered into the draw and you could win the cost of your shopping, up to a maximum of £75 – always useful just before Christmas! This will be for a specific good cause, yet to be finalised.
The Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month, 7.30pm at the Old Plough, Church Street Seaford. For more information about anything in this article, about membership or what the Club does please call 0845 8332796, follow us on Facebook or click on the Lioness Please mention Seaford Scene when pages oncontacting the Lions’ advertisers website www.npslions.co.uk.

Seaford Kurlers Well, bonfiring is over for another year and the dark nights are back. I wish they would leave clocks alone. Not a popular move as far as most people are concerned. Dark evenings do have one advantage in Seaford – Seaford Bonfire. The procession and displays were excellent and certainly would not be so effective in the daylight. They get better every year. Seaford Kurlers are back on track with a full complement of committee members. We can now look forward to our Christmas festivities. We will have a festive lunch at The Moorings in Pevensey and then have our mince pies on the last kurling session before Christmas. This year’s winner of the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup is Joe Humphries (photo right). His achievement with regard to playing the sport and getting very good at getting scores, has improved greatly. This has been down to his sheer determination. Well done Joe. On Monday 27th October, 2014, a small group of Seaford Kurlers demonstrated the sport at the Seaford Seniors’ Forum Older Peoples’ Day event at the Baptist Church. It went very well with some interest from people which might result in them coming along to see about our weekly sessions. The event is done every year and is organised by the various Senior Forums around the county. All the forums belong to ESSA (East Sussex Seniors’ Associations). Seaford Kurlers meet on Tuesday each week at 2pm until 4pm, with a short half-time break for refreshments. The annual membership is £5 and the weekly subs are £2.50. We are a club within ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). As such we are protected by their insurance and are able to hire the specially adapted coaches from ESDA Coach Services at favourable rates. Club contacts are June Wood, Secretary, tel 01323 885376, email: sally1989@tiscali.co.uk

Although I have touched on it before, I think it’s vitally important for runners to remember that our lack of a defined running season can easily lead to problems of burn-out and a greater susceptibility to injury. You only have to look on the Sussex Races website at all the running events throughout the year to realise how easy it would be to race every week. So, for runners who compete, and those who don’t, it is important to have a ‘quiet’ period when you might run shorter distances, at a more relaxed pace and run fewer times in a week. Mixing the type of running that you do helps but is probably not enough to allow you to properly recharge your batteries. The onset of lower temperatures and more inclement weather for the next three or four months would be the ideal time to take it easy for a while. However, that may not suit the runners who are preparing for a spring marathon like the London or the Brighton. Even so, there are still ways of building into a marathon training schedule, ‘quiet periods’. Your preparation should not look like a continuously steep line on a graph as you increase the distance you run. There needs to be brief ‘plateau’ on that line when, for instance, you reach 10 miles as your longest training run, and stay at that distance for a while before progressing to the next plateaus at perhaps 13 or 14 miles, then 17 and perhaps 20 miles. These are the quiet periods, the recovery times that your legs will appreciate, and allow you to further increase your distance with greater ease and strength. Controlling your running in that way is a useful strategy, so whether you are preparing for a marathon, a ten-mile event or 5km race, building it up in stages can be very successful.
Any Seaford Scene reader wanting to test themselves over a 5km route, but not a 5km race, might consider this – Starting at Splashpoint, run towards the Martello Tower, turning first right along the gravelled Cliff Gardens, then along Corsica Road to Southdown Road. Cut diagonally across the grassy area to Chyngton Road and follow it to the top of Chyngton Way. Turn left into Chyngton Lane and run up to the main road. Turn left and run down to the Sutton Avenue turning, following it to the mini roundabout at Links Road. Turn left and run to Chyngton Road. From this point, cut across the grassy area to Corsica Road and head towards the sea, finishing on the seafront. I have measured this route using fetcheveryone.com which is a useful free website to plot and measure routes. Some time during December many of us will be delivering by hand our local Christmas Cards. I hope I’m not the only one who sees this as a good opportunity to go for another run! After Christmas, one event that you won’t see on the Sussex Races website is the New Year’s Day jog along the seafront from the Martello (starting at 11am) and going as far as the Sailing Club and back. Organised by the Seaford Striders, it is open to everyone, whatever your age, speed or experience. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB It is some three months since I wrote our news and in September we held our Open Meeting at Peacehaven. The National Demonstrator was Tan Strong, a very glamorous lady who changed her jacket to match the flowers used in each arrangement which suited her title ‘Colour my World.’ In October our President Georgie Wall held a workshop where she demonstrated two different designs under the title ‘Rings and Things’. Members and visitors could then chose which design they wished to attempt. Georgie went around helping those less experienced and when the arrangements were completed she reviewed each in turn. In December we are back in our normal venue of St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford. Please come as early as possible after 2pm so that the meeting can start promptly at 2.30pm. Several members will each demonstrate a design, which will be raffled, and afterwards there will be a Christmas Tea.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy, Happy and Peaceful New Year. Any enquiries ring Tina Bacon on 01323 873162.

Hopefully readers will be aware of the Palm Oil (right), a white waxy type material, which is being washed ashore at the moment – this is poisonous to dogs and should only be handled with gloves. Our next meeting is Sunday 21st December (always the third Sunday of each month), meeting at 10am at the waymarker adjacent to the beach at the road leading from the level crossing. Our meetings last nominally for two hours but all are welcome, no matter how much time can be spared. Please do join us, we really are seeing major progress now in the care of this wonderful place.

East Blatchington Pond Conservation Society History
The earliest known record of the pond comes from the parish register of 1645, which notes that a servant girl named Sarah Reynolds was drowned there; apparently having committed suicide. At this time and for centuries to come, the pond must have been a focal point for village life, providing water for livestock and humans alike, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it would have provided a welcome drink for the flocks of sheep being driven between the downland grazing and market along the drove road (Sutton Drove). In the 1930s an exceptionally dry summer is said to have dried the pond out completely and this probably caused the clay lining to crack. After that time water only collected for limited periods during very wet weather and the site became silted up.
Restoration
In the late 1970s, East Blatchington was designated as a Conservation Area and it was felt by many local people that this was a good time to make a positive contribution by restoring the pond at the bottom of Blatchington Hill. As the site is owned by the local Council, they were asked to investigate the possibility of restoration, but after consideration they reported that the job could not be done without considerable expenditure and the employment of specialist labour and was not, therefore, a feasible proposition. Undaunted, the residents held a public meeting to canvass support for a ‘do-it-yourself ’ project. Such was the enthusiastic response that during the following summer, £2,000 was raised for the work and a committee was formed to carry it out under the inspirational Chairmanship of the late Mrs Madge Lewis. Work began in the winter of 1980 and the initial task was to stick together three rolls of heavy-duty polythene to form the lining, which was done in a barn at the Seven Sisters Country Park centre. Using the farm seemed like a good idea at the time, but the combined weight of the rolls was some 150 kilograms and lifting it all into a
64
trailer for transporting to the site and out again without damaging it was no mean feat! An excavator was hired to remove the accumulated silt of many years and also the original clay lining which was banked up around the site, forming a mound 6 metres high. An island was formed at one end made of large pipes (kindly donated by the Forestry Commission) that were stood on end and surrounded by wire netting, the structure being covered with soil. By the end of the project, about 1,000 tonnes of soil had been moved and 215 square metres of polythene laid, involving about 75 days of work.
Colonisation
In order to speed up the process of colonisation a few aquatic plants were rescued from a nearby marshland ditch which was about to be dredged and were transplanted to the pond. These included common reed, lesser reed mace and yellow flag for the pond margin, with frogbit and duckweed for the open water. In addition, osiers were planted on the island. More recently, a hedge of hawthorn and field maple has been planted at the top of the western bank to produce a thick screen from the road. Colonisation by nature has been successful and by the end of the second summer, a sample of water contained

a wealth of wildlife, including water boatmen, pond snails, damselfly larvae and sticklebacks. By the spring of 1983, one event that had become remarkable was that of frogs taking to the water to spawn - a sight that is becoming all too rare in today’s pollute and over-tidy countryside. Ducks, moorhens and the odd kingfisher are also seen. The moorhens breed two or three times yearly in the reeds next to the conservation area where there are wild flowers growing.
Local involvement
The restoration of the pond has been very much a team effort. Continual effort is required to maintain the pond and enhance its surroundings. During the summer months, this is achieved by a weekly working party of committee members and other volunteers. Maintaining the pond involves costs in buying tools, materials, insurance and occasionally the hire of outside labour and equipment. To meet these costs, we receive a small annual Council grant, but the main support comes from subscriptions and donations from the East Blatchington Pond Conservation Society. This is a support group of local residents whose interest and help are invaluable. An annual newsletter is sent to all members and contains articles and information on the pond and its progress.

Rotary Club of Seaford Grand Charity Raffle 2014 Finding the First Prize Winner
On Monday 27th October 2014, Rotarians Peter Fenwick (Vice President), Bill Pierce (Second Vice President) and Mike Roper (Chairman of Fundraising Committee) met at the Morrisons store in Seaford to draw the winning tickets of the Rotary Club of Seaford’s Grand Charity Raffle. They were joined by Jo Littlefair of Morrisons and other staff. Jo, assisted by staff and customers, pulled the seven winning tickets out of the drum. Of course it is an exciting moment when the winner of our first prize of £500 is revealed, but it was tempered with a degree of apprehension when the details on the first prize ticket stub gave very few clues to the actual winner, other than a single name and an approximate location. No telephone number or exact address – how were we going to find out the winner? It was decided positive action was required to track down the lucky winner and Mike began his investigations. Time spent trawling the Internet gave clues as to the location, and eventually, that afternoon Mike located the address and gained confirmation that there was a person so named on the ticket stub at this place. But that person had taken off to sunny climes in Europe for the winter and would not return until next year. With some invaluable help from others, the winner was contacted by radio telephone and Mike was able to confirm he was speaking to the lucky winner. The winner was of course delighted to receive such good news, and very kindly donated some of the winnings to the Rotary Club Charity. All the other prize winners were more easily contacted but were equally as pleased to have won. Our second prize of £100 and our third of £50 were supplemented by generous donations of wine, boxes of chocolates and tins of sweets from Morrisons. The Rotary Club raised over £2,100 from the raffle which will help support the local community in so many different ways. A big thank you to Morrisons for all their support and gifts, to all those involved in selling the tickets and to the general public for their generosity in helping raise such a wonderful amount.

Who’s Who In Seaford?
Father Christmas aka Santa Claus
In England the earliest known personification of Christmas dates back to the early 17th century – an elderly gentleman of cheerful appearance, “who when he came look’t so smug and pleasant, his cherry cheeks appeared through his thin milk white locks, like blushing Roses vail’d with snow white Tiffany”. His character was associated with feasting, hospitality and generosity to the poor rather than the giving of gifts. Since the mid-Victorian era however, Father Christmas has gradually merged with the pre-modern giftgiver St Nicholas (Dutch Sinterklaas, hence Santa Claus) and associated folklore. He is often said to reside in the mountains of Korvatunturi in Lapland Province, Finland. Urban myth has it that the red suit only appeared after the Coca Cola company started an advertising campaign depicting a red suited Father Christmas in the 1930s, however, early American illustrations show that the red suit was used long before then.*

POINSETTA
(EUPHORBIA PULCHERRIMA)
The Poinsettia, as seen above, is the most popular Christmas plant that produces attractive red, pink or white bracts during winter. It has probably been grown under ideal conditions so take care in getting it home then treat it as follows. They prefer normal room temperatures (13°C or 55°F) during winter months. Increase this to 18°C or 64°F from April. If you want it to flower for a second year then allow the plant to dry out then prune to about four inches above the compost. Resume watering then in April re-pot with fresh compost and keep warm. From June to September feed weekly with a half strength general fertilizer. From September give the plant at least 14 hours of total darkness each day for eight weeks. Cover with a box or black plastic bag. Check regularly at night to see if it needs water. By next Christmas it should bloom again and it will be larger!

ets face it, December is not the month when you expect to spend a lot of time in the garden. But there is no need to shut yourself away for the start of the winter. When the weather turns really cold there is nothing better than sitting by the fireside planning for next year. Presumably you have been saving all those seed catalogues sent to you in the past few weeks. So sit down and plan what changes, if any, you wish to make in the garden for 2015. Perhaps you want to grow more vegetables for the table or make a change to the type of flowers or shrubs grown in your borders. Think about a change of colour. Try a white garden or a

this is still a good month to move shrubs, climbers and perennials. 3 Check all vulnerable plants have frost protection. Put a thick layer of compost or straw over the crown of perennial plants. Seaford Gardening Club We are now into winter with thoughts of putting our gardens to bed for a couple of months. Greenhouses and sheds have been tidied and cleaned and provision made to over-winter the more delicate plants for the colder weeks to follow. A harsh spell of weather has been predicted so let us hope it is not too severe! Christmas is only just around the corner so we will soon be preparing for the festive season. Our October speaker, Reg Lanaway gave a wonderful talk entitled ‘Through the Seasons in a Sussex Woodland’. He teaches at Plumpton College and relayed to us a period when a nearby area called Brocks Wood was cleared and rejuvenated to save a rather derelict spot. The advice of The Woodland Trust was sought to suggest the best way forward. They started by cutting back the larger vegetation and clearing large sections of overgrown areas. The result was surprising as native flowers appeared which also brought in more insects, birds, small mammals etc. Piles of wood from the clearing of trees and shrubs were left to accommodate all these creatures in various locations. Reg also showed us lovely slides of various birds (including a nightingale!) caught in nets and ringed for collecting data for future reference. Birds of prey such as sparrow hawks and owls made their nests in the newly established woodland. He ended a very interesting lecture by showing us slides through the seasons. We were treated to over an hour of entertainment – which illustrated how clearing a small woodland area can make such a difference to our flora and fauna. We shall certainly ask him back again.

We’re getting B for effort in our walled garden at the Crouch as this is being written. The glorious summer has resulted in prodigious growth of the bamboo round the pond, the blackberries and the buddleia, with drastic action being required. James was in action digging out the bamboo where it was encroaching the pond margins and Katie warns anyone who is concerned about the under-ground activity of their bamboos – yes, even the black sort: “Make sure you have a clumpforming variety to save it getting out of hand.” Dave cut the brambles back and the rampant buddleias have been dealt with after what must have been their longest blossoming season ever. Moving on to the Cs, our chillies were flourishing in the polytunnel, the last green fruits turning a very Christmassy red and promising a really hot bite. And pots and pots of cannas have been safely tucked up under the plastic too. Meanwhile Dave has been busy repairing the veg bed timber edging, but spared a couple of minutes to explain how the garden is run. The committee of six is elected at the annual meeting, then the officers are chosen, currently Dave (chairman), Katie (secretary), James (treasurer), with Diana, Mike and Veronica on the committee. Dave explains: “We meet three times a year to formulate policy, which is then put forward at the weekly Wednesday meeting to the rest of the volunteers to have their say and confirm, agree or disagree. It’s kept nice and simple so everyone is happy to take part.” And as winter sets in, some of us would say it’s the best part, mixing garden topics with a bit of gossip with hands wrapped round a hot mug of tea or coffee. We were delighted to welcome back to the garden Richard who took a 12-month horticulture course at Plumpton College and went travelling too. He has returned with lots of chat and a mature outlook. Great to have you back, Richard. Our best wishes to Jan who, as you read this, will have
undergone her second knee replacement operation. We hope she’ll be back soon, sharing her extensive knowledge of plants. We took a table at the Seniors Forum event to publicise local voluntary groups. It was well attended by the general public and by other groups looking for volunteers. Last but not least, that C for Christmas word again. Hyacinth bulbs are safe in Katie’s garage, summoning up their beauty for festive flowering. Don’t forget, we are always open on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Hopefully we’ll have winter veg on sale – the leeks and kale are doing really well – and there’s lots to look at on the walls of our classroom. See you in 2015! The Garden Team Photos: Chillies make wonderful Christmas decorations as well as spicy eating. Maggie (photo above, left) and Veronica with gorgeous leeks and kale for sale.

MERCREAD YOUTH CENTRE MAD ABOUT TAX LTD
Exciting times for Mercread as we prepare to welcome Charlie Bear’s Nursery, a new and important provision for 2-5 year olds which will be opening in our Blue Hall in January. There are taster sessions on 8th,10th, and 11th of December and an open day on Saturday 13th, so if you are interested give Anita or Charlene a call on 07939 073131 and they will provide details.
In addition to the usual youth activities we ran ‘Spooky Spectacular’ during half term and welcomed some new faces. Thanks to some very generous donations we are now able to plan some new activities. For example, £1,000 from the Dymock Farm Barn Dance and a private gift of £260 are enabling us to consider a Disability Awareness Day, possibly involving wheelchair basketball, and some sessions on Safety Awareness and Self Defence. We’re listening hard to what young people are telling us they want. Youth Forum isvery involved and is a crucial voice for young people in Seaford. The group took the initiative and asked for a discussion with Council officers regarding the future development of the Salts, and has engaged in county-wide ventures such as the Spark Awards at the De La Warr in Bexhill and the upcoming Aspire Youth Conference in 2015. More locally Youth Forum is making a breakfast presentation to the Chamber of Commerce. The excellent Tackle Homophobia in Football project is now receiving national attention and we continue to work with our partners to keep the energy going. Finally we look forward to seeing you all at our stall at Seaford Christmas Magic on 6th December.

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE The battle of Trafalgar and the Immortal Memory of Admiral Lord Nelson were commemorated by members of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George on Trafalgar Day, 21st October. A formal dinner was held at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston where members and guests heard details of the Battle from the branch’s chaplain, Revd David Farrant, who is also Chaplain to Area 3 of the Royal Naval Association (Southern Flotilla). To add to the naval flavour of the evening, guests included members of Training Ship TS Defiance, the Sea Cadet Corps HQ at Newhaven, including two young cadets in uniform, Able Cadet Stephen Bailey and Cadet Charlie Knight. Four members of the Newhaven Station of the National Coastwatch Institute were also present, led by David Crozier. It is the tenth anniversary of the station so the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George wanted to present them with a useful gift to mark the

occasion. They needed a sturdy trolley that could go up and down steps to help moving equipment, especially for their fund raising efforts. Branch President Laurie Holland made the presentation. The guest of honour was Joanna Cadman who this year became the first lady to be made Chairman of The Royal Society, which has branches throughout the world. In her address she praised the Seahaven branch for its activities to promote England, Englishness and St George’s and England’s National day, 23rd April. In welcoming the guests, Chairman Bob Peedle MBE praised the work of the Cadets forces and the NCI, all of whom rely on volunteers to succeed at their work. He also pointed out that HMS Defiance, a name shared by the local Sea Cadet Corps, was one of the ships at Trafalgar. Forthcoming branch events were announced, including a lunch at Deanlands during November, a Christmas lunch at the Green Man at Ringmer in December and of course the celebration of St George’s Day on 23rd April 2015. This event will be one of those where the branch welcomes non-members. The others are HM The Queen’s Birthday, Battle of Britain Day each year on 15th September and Trafalgar Day. Photo: The dinner was supported by the Chair of Lewes District Council and the Mayors of Telscombe and Seaford. In memory of the Cheese & Pineapple Porcupine
by Julian O’Vegetables
Chewy Bloody Marys
Ingredients: A quantity of cherry or piccolo tomatoes, a quantity of vodka with a generous dash of Worcestershire sauce. Celery salt.
Back in the seventies, the height of food sophistication at most of the parties I attended was chunks of tinned pineapple impaled on cocktail sticks with cubes of cheddar, arranged on a stale loaf that had been covered in foil. These were washed down, according to gender, by Watney’s Bitter from Party Sevens and Fours, or Blue Nun. Those were the days!
The trick here is to get as much of the vodka/ Worcestershire mixture as you can into each tomato without damaging it too much. You can cut a cross into each tomato with a sharp knife and marinade them overnight or use a syringe (you can get a cook’s syringe from a good kitchenware shop). Mrs O’Vegetables is a nurse, so I use a real one! Great care needs to be taken to avoid injecting fingers and thumbs with the vodka/Lee and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce mix and some awkward questions in A&E. Keep the boozed up tomatoes in the fridge until it’s time to serve them. Eat them by stabbing with a cocktail stick and rolling them in the celery salt for an authentic Bloody Mary taste.
Party food should be fun and can be as easy to prepare as the above. Wow your guests with a little imagination. Here are few ideas:
Crispy Prosciutto and Asparagus Wraps
It’s just a few weeks to Christmas and the old bells will soon be jingling right up to the Queen’s speech. Party time approaches, so I thought party food was the order of the day.

Ingredients: A quantity of asparagus spears, a quantity of prosciutto ham slices, a dip of your choice (garlic mayo goes well). Wrap each asparagus spear in a slice of prosciutto and bake in a hot oven for four minutes or until the prosciutto is crispy. Leave to cool. How hard is that?
Posh Egg ‘n’ Bacon Sticks
Ingredients: A quantity of quail’s eggs (cheaper than you may think, I’ve seen them in Morrisons and Sainsburys), a quantity of strips of prosciutto ham about a centimetre wide and five long. Boil the quails’ eggs in a pan of water for two and a half minutes, then cool them down under the cold tap. Gently peel off the shells (the fiddly bit). Wrap each egg with a strip of the prosciutto and run a cocktail stick through both to hold them together. Enjoy!

BUMPER HARVEST – AND A NEW COLLECTION POINT – FOR SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE Harvest Festival has always been a lovely time in schools and churches, where the season’s bounty is collected and arranged at assemblies and services as a reminder of God’s provision from the earth. However, this year many schools and churches in the area had a focus a bit nearer home than usual as they were collecting their harvest for Seahaven Storehouse, who make up food parcels for those in Seahaven who are suffering food crisis. A total of three schools and five churches – all in Seaford – donated their harvest festival goods. Many hundreds of kilos of food were given; for example,

one church collected and gave nearly 230 kilos of provisions, which represented approximately ten food parcels for hungry families. Morrisons have been very helpful in allowing a bin to be placed where customers can donate food, and they also support the Storehouse when they hold collection days in store. Now Seaford Co-op has also kindly agreed to have a bin available – look out for it straight ahead of you as you go into the store. Dawn Woodgate, who heads up the Storehouse, said: ‘We were absolutely amazed at the generosity of all those who gave, whether through the children in schools, church congregations, or indeed via the bin in Morrisons. There was a huge amount of food... but it all went very quickly. ‘We are constantly surprised how soon the shelves become depleted after a large donation, because the reality is that the need is increasing and we are taking on a number of new families who need our help. Just one week after the harvest festival donations were received, we were once again in the position of requiring more food to satisfy our clients’ needs. ‘We would like to give a very big thank you to all who gave... and ask that, if at all possible, you continue to donate, since the need persists and many families and individuals are experiencing hard times at present. Remember our slogan: “Where just two cans can make all the difference!” Truly that is all we are asking for, that next time you go shopping, or join with your church congregation, or send your child to school on a ‘bring a can’ day, you think of donating just two cans of food to the Storehouse. You would be surprised how such a seemingly modest action can go towards bringing such relief to a hungry family. ‘I and the Storehouse team look forward to meeting you in Morrisons on our next collection days there on 21st November and 20th December. Do come and talk to us.’ To donate, please add to the bins in Morrisons or the Co-op, or contact Dawn on 07921 844930, email seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com to find out more.

Home Fires: A haunting story of love and loss during the Great War 2014 marks the Centenary of the First World War, a landmark anniversary for Britain and the world. Home Fires is a new arts/heritage project and brand new play by Sara Clifford exploring the role Newhaven, Seaford and their surrounding villages played during the First World War. Home Fires is part of the First World War Centenary Partnership’s global programme of events and activities (led by the Imperial War Museum) inspiring young and old to connect with the lives, stories and impact of the First World War. Home Fires will explore the impact of the conflict on the lives and families of local Newhaven and Seaford people at the time and for generations to follow. Home Fires will include school and community workshops alongside oral history training for volunteers. The creative team will work in collaboration with Newhaven Fort and other local history organisations, such as The Keep, Newhaven History Society, Sussex Archaeological Society, Seaford Museum and Brighton University, as well as local schools, colleges, armed forces veterans and other community group.

HALCYON DAYS MEMORY WALK IN SEAFORD BAY The day was bright, warm, yet fresh, the sky blue and the join between the sea and sky virtually indistinguishable, However this was not a fond memory of a past moment in time, it was the 19th October 2014. Such are the days that we remember when we look back at our earlier lives which made the reason for the gathering on Seaford’s Seafront all the more poignant. As part of a nationwide effort by the Alzheimer’s Society to increase awareness of Dementia, the Society had enrolled the help of several hundred volunteers, to arrange for groups of people to walk 5 kilometres in what was to be called Memory Walks. The Seaford gathering was organised by Fiona Skilton, a local mother of five, whose personal life and that of her children had been seriously affected in recent months by the onset of Dementia involving a very close family member. It was the speed and the indiscriminate way this cruel disease struck and the rapid decline experienced by this most loved member of her family, that prompted Fiona and her family to start campaigning for more support for sufferers and better education surrounding this degenerative condition, which is estimated to have only been diagnosed in 44% of sufferers. Fiona says, “People are of the opinion that Dementia only affects the elderly and although this is the case in the vast majority of sufferers, it is a fact that 40,000 young people in the UK also have the condition, therefore it is in the interest of us all to find ways of slowing this condition down or, at some point in the (hopefully) not distant future, eradicating it completely, and this can only be done by research…and research costs money.” On the day, the group raised almost £200, with the vast majority being collected from passersby on the day of the walk, and Fiona would like to thank all those who gave, from a child who gave the £1.50 she was given for an ice cream, to the person who gave £20, without saying a word, “Their generosity moved me greatly.”
In fact these acts of kindness have prompted Fiona to do more to support the Alzheimer’s
Society. She has already registered to run the Brighton Marathon next April and hopes to raise a minimum of £1,000, and is seeking sponsors, both from private individuals, tradespeople and companies as well as local fundraisers. Fiona’s last thought on this event and others she plans is quite thought provoking:. “Although my efforts may not be able to help my family member or in all likelihood the UK having 1,000,000 sufferers by 2025, we can all play a very small part in putting in place the infrastructure that will eventually see these grotesque numbers decline.” If you would like to make a donation, all of which, would be gratefully appreciated, then you can do so by going to www.justgiving.com/fiona-skilton1. You can text AWJK78 + the amount you want to donate to 70070.
Facts:

End of season FOOD SWAP The last Seaford Foodswap of 2014 was held last Saturday at the Seven Sisters Public House in Seaford. Tables in this spacious venue were quickly filled with loaves of bread, chutneys, soups and cakes. Regular attendees set up speedily and were then able to help newcomers. With sampling, negotiations and swaps made it was time to go. Everyone left happy, their bags and boxes bulging with new tastables. As the result of feedback, Seaford Foodswap will return next year. No dates have yet been set but watch this space in the new year. We are trying to find new ways to promote this event and encourage more people to take part.
