The Launch of the Mayors Mad March Marathon
For more details on upcoming events, please see the Seaford Town Council webpage or facebook site or call 01323 894870.
The Mayor of Seaford’s Mad March Marathon got off to a great start by raising £150 for WAVES Family Support Service at the monthly Seaford Chamber of Commerce business breakfast on March 1st. Chamber of Commerce Immediate Past President Gerri Ori welcomed the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Linda Wallraven, and her Consort, Mrs Liz Holland, along with the Chairman of WAVES, Mr Richard Plowman, who gave a short talk about the work of WAVES in the Seaford Community. Organisations hosting events for the Marathon Month include the Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors, Bishopstone Village Hall Committee, the Constitutional Club, M&Co, The Royal Society of St George Seahaven Branch, Seaford Family Focus Group, Seaford Town Football Club, Seaford Lecture and Literary Club, Seaford Horticultural Society, NPS Lions and Lionesses and the Seaford Rugby Club.
Are you a car owner/driver with occasional free time on a Monday afternoon? The Seaford Stroke and Caring Club desperately needs volunteers with their own cars to transport our members to and from the local venue.

The MAD MARCH MARATHON ROLLS ON... The Seaford Mayors Mad March Marathon rolled on with a quiz night hosted by the NPS Lionesses on Saturday 3 March, which was well attended. Around £200 was raised for the mayor’s supported charity – WAVES Family Support Service – and the winners of the quiz were the Walking Wounded team comprising of Barry, Marion, Sue and Steve. The runners up were the Brighton Lions, The Moggies and The Sparklers. The quizmaster was Trevor Gomersall. Councillor Linda Wallraven, Mayor of Seaford, thanked the NPS Lionesses for hosting a Mad March event and briefly spoke about the support that her charity, WAVES FSS, gives to families in Seaford.
It would only be once in every four weeks, but this generous help would ensure that we can continue and do not have to leave anyone at home. A milage payment is available.

A Cinema is coming to Seaford! Seaford Community Cinema has secured funding to bring the best of contemporary and world cinema to Seaford. In June 2011 a group of local residents formed a committee with the aim of bringing a cinema to Seaford. An ‘Awards for All’ grant for the purchase of equipment was applied for and in February 2012 the grant was successfully awarded. A further grant from Sussex Community Foundation has been given to cover publicity. The committee continues to seek funding from other funders, local businesses and donations as Seaford Community Cinema is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. Seaford Community Cinema will aim to show a diverse range of arthouse, world cinema and contemporary films. A quarterly programme will be put together by the committee and currently two films will be shown per month with one junior film to be shown per season. It is important for the committee to know what audiences think of the films shown and will give everyone who attends the opportunity to rate the film. The launch of Seaford Community Cinema will be at 7pm on Friday 21st September 2012, at the Barn Theatre, Steyne Rd, followed by a film screening at 8pm. To add your name to the email list or if you’d like to comment or offer help, please visit the website at: www.seafordcinema.org We look forward to seeing you at our shows!

Local hypnotherapist meets new national standards A Seaford based hypnotherapist has become one of the first in the country to achieve a new national standard of excellence for her therapy. Magda Harbour has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare. The recognition places her at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics. Magda Harbour said: “Achieving registration is not only great news for me and my clients, but a vital step for hypnotherapy. The most
popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and anxiety conditions, weight control and addictive behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse.” Hypnotherapy is one of 12 disciplines now recognised by the CNHC. Members of the public can search the CNHC register to find practitioners in their local area. More than 40,000 searches were carried out last year. By providing a verification of standards, the CNHC allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals. For further information, please contact Magda Harbour on mobile number 07968 114196

Family Support Work association The Family Support Work Association (FSW) is a registered charity which dates back to 1890. Over the years, there have been many changes in the society, which first started as an adoption agency. FSW’s work has often been of a pioneering nature, gaining a relationship with government-provided services. FSW anticipated roles taken on by the state, with the adoption work being one example. At present FSW work complements that of the government whilst offering support which focuses on distressed parents as well as children and young people. The Association repeatedly sees the disintegration of families, arising from issues such as bereavement, illness, imprisonment and relational breakdown which are accompanied by many emotional and practical difficulties. As an Association it seeks to help around 2000 families per year across Sussex and as an independent charity, its work is undertaken on a neutral basis and is open to all people. FSW operates with several full- and part-time community workers working across various areas of East and West Sussex. Its ambition is to grow so that it can cover the whole of East and West Sussex. It currently offer individual and group support to some 250 families each year, and with work done at the residential and day centre, that figure multiplies ten-fold. FSW works to support families overcome difficult periods in their lives with positive, emotional and practical advice through: • home visits • one-to-one meetings • support groups and drop-ins • signposting to other agencies for legal and financial issues • arranging trained volunteers to work alongside our professional staff We offer information on: • benefits • housing problems • health and education issues including domestic abuse• advocacy Our free and confidential support is offered to parents/ carers and their children in many areas of East and West
14
Sussex, including Brighton & Hove. This includes anyone who has the responsibility for the care of children, whether they are single, separated, divorced, bereaved or grandparents. The Family Support Work enables the team to help families, often in times of great difficulty and chaos, for as long as they need us. Unlike many services aimed at supporting families, we have no time limit or set outcomes to prove. Research shows that pro-active work with parents is much more effective than reactive work with children in crisis. The service we offer acknowledges that parents, especially those coping alone, need and deserve support - there is no manual for the difficult job of raising children. What is so different about FSW is that we work directly with some of the more vulnerable members of our community. We do so in the full knowledge and confidence that we carry with us the prayers, kindness and support of so many. (FSW Worker) Recently FSW has joined forces with Brighton and Hove Albion FC’s ‘Albion in the Community’ Charity, to work on some fundraising schemes and projects that can benefit both charities; these will include a match-day collection, Brighton and Hove Albion first team players attending several FSW events throughout the year, among them the Open Day in September at Knowles Tooth Children's Centre and the Annual Book sale in November. Both charities will also contribute to a new scheme set up by Albion in the community, called ‘Want to Work’. It is being set up to help many unemployed people across East Sussex who seek work experience, training and even partand full-time employment.

Seaford Young Musicians Display Their Talent There was a packed hall on Saturday, 10th March at Newlands School, Seaford to see pianist Lia Todd take top spot in the inaugural competition to find the Seaford Young Musician of the Year, organised by the Rotary Club of Seaford.
who, what, where & when in APRIL 1st 1999 Seaford Town Council is established. 2nd 1871 The Census return shows that there are 640 men and 717 women in Seaford. There are 265 inhabited buildings. 7th 1869 A huge flock of over 15,000 ducks passes Seaford heading east. 10th 1813 Mr Leach of Seaford dines with the Lord Chancellor and the Prince Regent at a meal at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. 10th 1979 Seaford Museum opens. 11th 1804 James Hurdis, Seaford Apothecary and Druggist, is made bankrupt 13th 1950 Seaford Council buys 500 deck-chairs. 15th 1899 Seaford Council agree to let the National Telephone Company erect telephone poles in the town. 18th 1058 The Flemish monk Bulgarus arrives in Seaford to steal the bones of local St Lewenna from nearby St Andrew’s Church. 20th 1901 Mrs E. Hindle, the manageress of the Esplanade Hotel, falls down a lift shaft and is killed. 21st 1958 Chyngton School opens. Compiled by Kevin Gordon.
The competition, which was open to young people aged 11 – 17 who live or attend a school in the town, attracted both vocalists and instrumentalists with the chance to win cash prizes and the opportunity to feature in a spotlight solo at the Seaford Rock and Jazz Cabaret Evening on 24 March. The music chosen ranged from hits by Oasis and Adele to songs from well-known musicals as well as classical pieces. The second and third prizes went to vocalists Lamiah Davey and Emily Pearce and all performers also received a certificate commending their performance. Presenting the prizes Rotary Club President Isla Sitwell commented that this was just one of the ways the Club aimed to support our young people in the town. He went on to thank Mandy Johannson, the Head Teacher at Newlands School, for the use of their facilities, the judges Pat White, Margaret Darwall Smith and Andrew Daniels, along with Adam Briggs who managed the sound and lighting, and Damon Willer who acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event. But most of all he thanked the young people for the talent and confidence they had shown, which had captivated the audience. Because of their efforts this inaugural competition had been an unqualified success and he hoped it could become the first of many.

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON As our economy continues to struggle many businesses face real difficulties and challenges writes Robert Willison, Partner Corporate & Commercial Business at top local accountants Swindells. It is a great tribute to many of the businesses I know that they have survived, because they display a level of ingenuity, flexibility and grit which will stand them in good stead for the year to come.
So what should a smaller business do in difficult times? Above all, look after customers and make sure you are providing the goods and services they want and at the right price. Some businesses need to cut costs but this must not mean “putting up the shutters and digging in” – losing sight of the customer is the surest way to failure.
to continue trading is determined by the contents of your bank account not your profit & loss account! Keep a tight control over expenditure; minimise stocks, collect debts fast and take advantage of suppliers’ credit. Credit control may be tricky; you don’t want to offend a valuable customer but how valuable is someone who can’t or won’t pay you? Resist all temptation to reduce marketing activity; there are many customers out there looking for good service, competitively priced, provided by well-run businesses with a positive attitude.

LEWES & SEAFORD CAB TO GIVE MORE DEBT ADVICE
client’s creditors to pay off his remaining debts with a low monthly payment. This gave control back to the client and helped to alleviate his worries, enabling him to concentrate on managing his illness.
Lewes and Seaford CAB has recently received a grant of £4,833 from the Nationwide Foundation to support its work. The funding will be used to provide an additional day of debt advice each week for clients over 50. This will benefit people in the whole of Lewes District.
Jackie Wilkes, District Manager, said: “We are very grateful to the Nationwide Foundation for this grant. It will make a huge difference to our debt provision across the district and help clients over 50 to receive the face to face advice they need in order maximise their income and access the benefits to which they are entitled. If we were able to recruit a volunteer administration worker to support our Money Advice team it would relieve them of some of the paperwork and allow them to see even more clients. I’d like to encourage anyone interested in volunteering in this vital role to give me a call on 01273 477924 for an informal chat about what’s involved.”
Lewes and Seaford CAB provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. It values diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination. Debt is the second largest area of advice for Lewes and Seaford CAB and in 2010-11 its advisers dealt with 3,778 debt issues. protecting your inheritance Barry Davis, Mayo Wynne Baxter When someone dies without a will, you might think relatives decide who inherits what, but this is not so. Assets are distributed according to rules laid down by Parliament - which may not follow the deceased’s wishes. If there are no relatives, the money may go to the state – showing the importance of making a will. The law does offer some protection to people disinherited in this way, as well as those left out of a will.
l
Child of the deceased; including adopted and adult children l Anyone (including stepchildren) who was not a child of the deceased, but was treated as a child of the family in relation to a marriage or civil partnership l Anyone who, at the time of death, was at least in part financially maintained by the deceased.
You must be able to prove reasonable financial provision has not been made. The Court considers various factors to judge this: l the present or future financial resources and needs of the person claiming l the present or future financial resources and needs of other beneficiaries or claimants l the deceased’s responsibilities towards the claimant and any beneficiaries of the estate l Unless there is good reason for delay, l the size and nature of the estate the claim must be issued within six l disabilities of any claimant or beneficiary months of the Grant of Probate or Letters l the conduct of the claimant and others of Administration. that may be relevant. The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 allows some categories of people to contest the division of an estate that does not adequately provide for them. A claim can be brought if certain criteria are met: l The deceased was domiciled in England or Wales. This generally means they lived here, but they may have moved abroad and still retained their domicile here.
The relationship with the deceased must be either: l Spouse or civil partner l Former spouse or civil partner who has not re-married or entered a new civil partnership l A person who lived with the deceased as if their spouse or civil partner for at least the whole two years immediately before the death

Wills Are you aware of how your estate would be distributed if you died without making a will? It might not be as you think or would wish for, leaving a lot of potential problems for your beneficiaries. A will is inexpensive to make and the professional advice you will receive at Barwells will ensure that your loved ones are left with as few problems as possible.
Lasting Powers of Attorney This document enables you to give named persons, your attorneys, the powers to deal with your affairs should you become unable to deal with them yourself. The document can be, and should be, prepared well in advance so that it is there if the time comes. It must not be left until it is too late as a person without capacity cannot then appoint attorneys and an application to the Court to appoint a Deputy must be made, which is much more time consuming and expensive. The moral is to prepare the document when you can and, if you have elderly relatives, make sure that they have done so as well.
Estates If a relative has passed away, it is very often a stressful time for the family. In these circumstances, our team of specialists at Barwells can take the burden of dealing with the estate off your hands, bringing to bear our extensive experience in the administration of estates. If you find yourself having to consider dealing with an estate, give us a call and we can let you know how we can help.

Rotary Leads Volunteer Force in Global Polio Eradication
squeezing drops of the oral vaccine into the mouths of children under the age of 5. Day two, the same team dressed in canary yellow, so that they could be recognised and bring people out to satisfy their curiosity, proceeded on to house-tohouse calls to immunize those that could not get to the booths. John reported that there was such a warm and friendly welcome from the people who have very few possessions of their own but still took a great interest by gathering to witness the help being administered. They understood what the helpers were doing and why the help was there for the children. John said, “It has been extremely rewarding knowing that you are really doing something worthwhile and seeing the happy friendly children and the appreciation from their families. It was an awe-inspiring experience – never to be forgotten.”
Following on from the recent BBC programme on this subject we should bear in mind that Rotary Club members in more than 200 countries are leading this global effort to eradicate polio worldwide. As the lead private-sector partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has contributed nearly US$800 million to fight this crippling and potentially fatal disease. Of even greater significance are the countless volunteer hours of more than one million Rotarians who have donated their help to immunize nearly 2 billion children in over 122 countries over the last 20 years. Locally, the Rotary Club of Seaford can report that one of its members, paying his own passage, made a working visit to a deprived area in the outskirts of Delhi, India. Day one of the visit, working from one of the “booths”, Past President John Owen had the privilege to be involved in a team of four immunizing 620 children by

Running Commentary... In these monthly articles I have touched on many of the aspects that make running such an enjoyable and popular pastime for so many. However, one element that I have mentioned very little is inspiration. Being inspired by the efforts and encouragement of others can have a profound and lasting effect on one’s mindset and achievements, and I believe that the world of running is full of inspirational characters at all levels. One such person was Bill Young, who, at the age of 50 was one of the original members of the Seaford Striders when it was formed in 1986. Like so many, he ran for fitness and enjoyment but also liked the challenge of competing in races, and took part in hundreds of events, from one-mile ‘sprints’ to ultramarathon endurance races. Throughout his 25 years as a Strider he encouraged, advised and supported his fellow runners, while through his dedication and commitment ensured that the club grew strong and thrived. Bill’s favourite races were marathons, achieving a PB of 3:49 at the 1987 London Marathon. He went on to build up a cricket score of marathons as he set about reaching 100 marathons by his 70th birthday. When he was on 93 (and aged 68) he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and told to give up running. His response was - “In that case, I’ll walk the last seven”… and he did. Interestingly, Bill didn’t enjoy running in hot weather, yet despite that, nearly half of his marathons were done on such occasions. His first attempt at the South Downs Way 80-mile ultramarathon was on a very warm summer’s day in 1993, but he was forced to pull out with heat exhaustion after only 52 miles… only? Two years later he returned to the event and conquered it despite similar weather conditions.

An early sign of his enthusiasm for running came as a 12-year-old when, in the 1948 Olympics year he was one of a group of children who organised their own ‘mini Olympics’ around the roads of Brighton, and he comfortably won all the ‘long distance’ races. His interest in athletics then took a back seat until the running boom of the 1980s when marathons caught his imagination and he became an enthusiastic participant. He used to call himself a plodder, but plodders don’t run sub 4-hour marathons. While he was inspired by people like Paula Radcliffe, Eamonn Martin Haile Gebrselassie, he was enthusing others around him, particularly newcomers to running. Bill Young was a quiet, unassuming person with a passion for running, a strong sense of loyalty and a cast-iron determination to do his best in whatever he tackled. So when he was restricted to just walking, his resolve was just as solid, even though it must have been extremely hard watching runners leaving him trailing far behind in a race. At no time did he ever show any bitterness at having had the thrill and buzz that running creates, taken from him. Bill was a truly inspirational athlete. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

Eat Your Way to Success For those of you who have started your journey towards a healthier lifestyle, may I congratulate you on the choices you have made. I am sure you are striving towards eating a healthier diet and being more active. However, on your journey obstacles may get in the way and one of those is likely to be pressures to eat the wrong foods or more food than you need or want. This will, of course, take you off your path to following your healthy eating plan and I would like to give you some helpful advice when faced with difficult situations, which I hope will help you stay on track towards your ultimate health and fitness goals. Dealing with pressures to eat It is likely that you are going to be faced with pressures to eat by family, friends or colleagues. The reasons are varied, some are well meaning and some for whatever reason are not. l
Others may feel uncomfortable when eating large meals in front of you and may offer or encourage you to eat more. Always be polite in your responses and tell them you do not feel uncomfortable and they can eat as they wish and you are happy with what you have chosen.
l
A loved one may feel obliged to take care of you and they may feel you are starving yourself and making yourself ill. They may want to encourage you to eat more because they are concerned for your welfare. Again you need to reassure them that you are fine and happy with what you are doing and that they will help you more by encouraging you to keep to your healthy eating plan.
l
Unfortunately, you will come across people whose motives are not positive and they may want to sabotage your efforts. They may be jealous of your success because they cannot do the same. This is their problem and attitude, don’t let it be yours.
l
Others, for whatever reason, may not want you to succeed and again this is their problem. It is better to ignore them, refuse the pressure to eat and move on with your life; after all, you are going to be the happier and healthier person in the end.
your plan whatever it takes and most people will get the message and stop pestering you. When pressured to eat, stand up for yourself and refuse. Avoid being aggressive or insulting even if you suspect evil motives. Eating away from home l When you go out for a meal only order what you need and believe is right for you. Do not be taken in by the £1 added extras and usually high-fat items. It may sound like a good deal but your waistline will not thank you. l When you make the good choice of a salad then ask for the dressing on the side, or low fat option or better still, none at all. l Watch out for hidden calories such as rich sauces, oils, fried or breaded foods. Ask the waiter if you are not sure. l Beware of the breadbasket - it’s best not to eat the bread; however, having one piece without butter and eating it slowly will mean you are more full before your main meal and may not eat as much fatty food later in the meal. l Be wise with dessert. Ask yourself, do I deserve a dessert? Am I still hungry? Have I eaten lightly today and can I enjoy a light dessert without feeling guilty later? Choose fresh fruit salad. Some restaurants have calories on the menus so choose the low option. Ask your friends or partner to encourage you to order the healthy option. l To drink or not to drink alcohol. It is, of course, better to avoid alcohol. When you eat your muscles will become saturated with glycogen (the sugars from the carbohydrates you eat) so any alcohol you drink has nowhere to go and can only be stored as fat, usually around your middle. If you are going to have a little alcohol, better choices could be a wine spritzer; having a glass of wine and glass of water and alternating the two perhaps a spirit with a low-cal mixer or water. Avoid alcopops and beer. As always when you are on a healthy eating and exercise plan, life may sometimes take you off course. Be kind to yourself when this happens; do not punish yourself. Accept that you did not make the best choice and move on, being determined to do much better next time. The next day you are going to get back on your healthy eating plan and healthy lifestyle. One small blip does not have to affect your whole week. Always, move on, go forward and do whatever it takes to reach your goal.
If you would like to know more about diet and exercise Abs Personal Training runs a Free Weight Loss Club which can be attended by all our exercise class members. The weight-loss plan that we share is the highly successful Abs Weight Loss Plan that I have used with my personal l When you are dealing with these situations it is training clients for many years. A professional service solving all your cleaning and ironing needs. The evening begins with an illustrated talk by Ian Everest called ‘From the Sussex Ox to the Fordson Major’ - the fascinating story of the use of oxen, horses and steam power on Sussex farms; their impact on the countryside; and the modernising of agriculture with the arrival of the first tractors. After a cheese and wine break the second half will see a showing of a 1950s cine film - ‘A year in the life of Manor Farm, Bishopstone’. This much-acclaimed film, made by farmer John Willett, shows a time when twenty men worked on the farm all the year round - and forty at harvest time.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY
First a reminder that on Good Friday, 6th April, the choir will be joined by guest singers for an ‘Almost Instant’ performance of John Stainer’s The Crucifixion at 7pm in St. Leonard’s Church, Church Street, Seaford. Soloists Gary Marriott (Tenor) and Adrian White (Bass) and the chorus tell the Passion story and the work includes five hymns for the congregation/audience to sing along with the choir. Richard Toms plays the Organ and Sion Parry conducts. The performers have a run-through at 5pm on the day, followed by refreshments and then the performance at 7pm. Singers and audience are asked to contribute an admission charge of £3 at the door on the day, the proceeds of the event going to the local registered charity Homelink, assisting homeless people in the area to obtain private rented accommodation. Much more about Homelink at www. lewesdistrictchurcheshomelink.org.uk. Further choir information from 01323 492791. Fast forward three weeks and, again at St.Leonard’s Church, the Society presents its Spring Concert at 7.30pm on Saturday 28th April (not ‘May’ as the writer dozily suggested in the March issue of this publication !). The two very contrasting works in the programme are contemporaneous. Johannes Brahms While Brahms, in his thirties, was around 1866 composing his monumental German Requiem, Fauré (19) was working on his small but perfectly formed masterpiece the Cantique de Jean Racine which won him first prize when he graduated from the École Niedermeyer in 1865. The Requiem will be sung in English and the soloists will be Lucinda Houghton (Soprano) and Jozik Kotz (Baritone). The Cantique will be sung in French. Nick Milner-Gulland will be at the Organ and Sion Parry conducts. Tickets at £9 (including programme) will be on sale at Seaford Tourist Information Centre and Newberry Estate Agents, both in Church Street, or telephone 01323 894954. There will be a further opportunity to hear the Requiem on Friday 11th May at 7.30pm when the choir and soloists repeat it in Lewes Town Hall with the Lewes Concert Orchestra in a programme which will include Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 2.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

The last such gift in 2011 was made at the branch's Christmas Lunch at the Star in Alfriston in December to the Starfish Project, a magnificent organisation founded and run by Ann Blight, which helps recovering stammerers. They needed a new printer and the Branch was able to help. The first gift for this year, however, was made on Sunday 26th February to the Seaford Lifeguards and consisted of lifesaving CPR equipment and a watertight container to help with their vital work in making our beaches safe. Chairman of the lifeguards, Peter Gwilliam, thanked the Society and said “We found a need for this sort of equipment last year when we had to make a particularly difficult rescue. This will certainly enhance our ability to help in future.” The Seahaven Branch of the Society has more gifts in the pipeline, including help with the South Heighten Jubilee celebrations and the repair of a field gun for the Newhaven Sea Cadets. The branch is also helping Seaford Town Council again with the plans for a Veterans and Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30th June. Photo (l - r) Peter Gwilliam, Chairman, and Laurie Holland, President of Seaford’s Lifeguards, explain the use of some of the equipment to Don Mabey, President of the Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’, who had just presented them with the gifts.

Who’s Who In Seaford?
Pauline Ruckes, President of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford Pauline has been a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford for 11 years. She was born and educated in East London and attended the first ‘Technical & Commercial’ School. Now retired, Pauline used to work as a secretary/PA at Legal & General. She belongs to and is involved with her local church. Pauline is married and has 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. What does your role involve? I chair monthly meetings and coordinate activities of various committees (fundraising, social, overseas & catering). I support my own club’s fundraising events, ie. Spud & Pud lunches, coffee mornings, ‘Candlelight Supper’ in late June in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and MacMillan Nurses, etc., attend outside activities, when invited, ie. Rotary quizzes, fundraising events, etc., and also activities of other Inner Wheel Clubs in our district. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Anything from ‘Les Miserables’. I have seen the show four times. What book are you reading? The Return by Victoria Hislop. However, Neville Shute is my favourite author of all time, but it is very difficult to get hold of his books these days, even via the library. What is your favourite film? I really do enjoy going to the cinema. Shawshank Redemption, Castaway, Beaches, Steel Magnolias. What is the first line of your favourite poem? Just a line to say I’m living, that I’m not among the dead Though I’m getting more forgetful and mixed up in my head... What is your idea of happiness? Lying on a sunbed on a beach in either Greece or Cyprus, reading a book. Also enjoying a meal out with family. We don’t go in for presents in our family but always enjoy a meal out together to celebrate a birthday or Christmas. Which living person do you most admire? Camila Batmanghelidjh, The founder of ‘Kids Company’. I would truly love to talk to her and find out how she started this organisation. What is your favourite smell? Freshly cut grass – it makes me so glad to live in England. What is your greatest fear? I have a phobia of anything to do with birds. I cannot stand the sound of their flapping wings. What words or phrases do you most overuse? My husband says it’s “now where did I put that?” What is your most memorable learning experience? Hot-air balloon ride, given to me as a 60th birthday present. A fantastic experience (if you don’t mind heights). What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Not to worry too much. Today’s flood will be tomorrow’s puddle. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My grandchildren (one of whom is slightly disabled).

SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Come and join us - we are a friendly informal group, with some members who are great experts in various aspects of natural history (and are happy to share their knowledge) and others who are novices keen to learn about plants, birds and insects in our lovely Sussex countryside. We start our new season of outdoor meetings on 3rd April with a stroll around High and Over looking for spring flowers. Our outdoor meetings are gentle walks usually lasting about two and a half hours. They generally take place on Tuesdays – see the listings in Seaford Scene for details. We look forward to seeing all our current members and we welcome visitors and prospective new members on these walks. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964.

Out and about in April It’s always difficult to anticipate precisely what we will see on our walks – so much depends on the weather. In February this year, spring plants, like Lesser Celandines, were starting to flower and then they stopped when the cold snap came along. In 2011, we developed a programme to look at one area – High and Over and Cradle Valley – from March to August to observe and note changes taking place over the seasons. We concentrated on flowering plants, birds and butterflies and moths as this is where we had sufficient expertise to be confident of identifying what we saw. And over the six visits we found 189 species of flowering plants, 64 species of birds and 30 species of butterflies and moths. More information on the aims of the survey and what we found is available on our website. What follows is based on what we found last April. That was after a very cold winter when everything was a bit later than usual. As well as Lesser Celandine (right), we saw Herb Robert, Lords and Ladies, Sweet and Hairy Violets, with many other plants already visible but not yet in flower. In the scrubland, Blackthorn was giving a good show of white blossom (before its leaves appeared) followed by Hawthorn, sometimes called ‘May’ but almost certain to be seen in April this far south. The highlight of the month was the spectacular display of Cowslips on the Cradle Valley side of High and Over. The day we went out in April (5th), it was too cold and windy for butterflies or moths but we saw many of the common birds. It was good to see and hear some skylarks and we also spotted a party of goldfinches and a wren. It is the small insect-eating birds like wrens which struggle to survive in cold winters, so it’s always reassuring to see them in the spring. At the other end of the scale, we spotted one of the ravens, which are becoming a more common sight here as they extend their range eastwards. April is a glorious time to be out in the countryside it feels like everything is springing into life. It’s lovely to be outside and more enjoyable still if you can identify some of the wildlife around you.

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. 100AD ROMAN CARVING A few years ago Seaford resident Jenny Odam was renovating her garden when she noticed a pair of eyes looking at her from a pile of rubble. A stone block was carved with a face. We don’t know exactly what the face was or if it was part of a larger sculpture but it has been dated to about the year 100AD, when the Romans occupied our town. The Romans would have used the mouth of the River Ouse at Seaford as a harbour. There is other evidence of Roman occupation including a hoard of coins which are on display at the Museum close to this ancient Roman Head. Selected by Kevin Gordon Museum Winter Opening Times up to April 6th: Sundays and Bank Holidays. 11am to 1pm and 2 - 4pm. Summer Opening Times from April 7th: Sundays and Bank Holidays. 11am to 1pm and 2.30 - 4.30pm. Wednesdays and Saturdays. 2.30pm - 4.30pm. Group visits are available at other times by appointment.

Living at Cuckmere Haven
Part 8
I’m sitting out on the verandah writing this on a warm spring morning. The sun on the sea, the birds singing, the garden springing into life: all these things make the dark days of winter worth it. The warmth of the sun gives Robb and I the chance to fall in love with Cuckmere all over again. Not that we’d fallen out of love with this beautiful place, only that the daily tasks to enable us to live comfortably during the winter could distract us from the wonder of it all. I try to remember this on a daily basis – to take stock and count my blessings, so that it doesn’t take a sunny day for me to think ‘Life’s good’. I keep a little book of gratitudes with things I’m grateful for on a grand scale (my husband, my family, my health etc.) and ‘smaller’ daily gratitudes (witnessing the mist rolling off the sea at sunrise, catching up with my best friend over a glass of wine). I go for months happily reminding myself of all life’s small wonders. Then, one day, I forget to write in the book and that day becomes weeks…and then months. My attitude has imperceptibly changed and I’m living less in the moment and more caught in the daily grind of getting things done. Recently, whilst sorting through a pile of dusty books by my bed, I rediscovered the gratitude book. I was in a fret about all the things I had to do and how little time I had to do them in and the book landed in my hands at JUST the right time – time to reinstate that sense of joy and wonder! Everything about Cuckmere’s natural spring beauty reminds me to live in the present – to savour every moment. April is my spring-cleaning month when I start running around with cardboard boxes marked ‘charity shop’ and Robb starts quaking in his boots! Growing up as a child of hoarders has made me rather ruthless, whereas Robb, whose mum kept a minimalist home, likes to hold on to things. I’m sure this is common in a lot of
60
marriages – one spouse keeps things and the other puts the newspaper in recycling before anyone’s even read it. Wherever we’ve lived, we’ve always kept a drawer for Robb’s collection of items somewhere on the path between broken and fixed. There are also all the bits and bobs that ‘might be useful one day’ including any number of screws and unidentifiable objects I’m assured are the components of future fully functioning bikes. Since we’ve lived at Cuckmere, the drawer has become a shed, and then two sheds. But I have to admit, when I saw a number of those unidentifiable objects come to life as part of Robb’s hand-made bicycle – created entirely from found second-hand bike parts – I had to take my hat off to him. Those ‘might be useful one day’ objects clearly were, indeed, useful! Several years ago, prior to moving onto a boat, we got rid of most of what we owned. Furniture went on Freecycle and other items – everything from ornaments through to camping equipment – we put outside the house, free to collector. I spent a whole week watching our life-in-objects being carried away by new owners (a source of surprise and interest – who would have thought that a rather dour-looking man would gleefully scurry away with a box of aromatherapy oils and books?!). I can’t pretend it was easy. When a friend found out I’d given all my vintage 50s dresses to charity, she voiced what I think a lot of our friends were thinking at the time, that we had gone quite mad. Recently married, we should have been feathering our nest, filling it with things, rather than putting said things out on the pavement. But the sense of freedom when we moved onto our 30-foot boat, with just the bare necessities, was enormous. Free from stuff, we were free from fretting about stuff. Time for a confession: I couldn’t get rid of my books. Hundreds of them went in huge boxes to wait in my mother-in-law’s loft until they could be lovingly restored to bookshelves, as they have been at Cuckmere. If Robb likes to hoard DIY stuff, my weakness is books. And I am amazed at the amount we have managed to accrue since moving to Cuckmere – so much STUFF! In that dusty pile of books where my gratitude book was hiding, I also came across a little tome called ‘Clearing your Clutter’. Marigolds on and I’m raring to go – watch this space! Lucy Corkhill

Seaford Little Theatre Review
Habeas Corpus The Seaford Little Theatre has struck gold once again as they brilliantly performed Alan Bennett’s racy post-card comedy ‘Habeas Corpus’ on Saturday 18th February. The Little Theatre crew have a real talent for farce, a talent which came winging through in their revival of this wickedly funny and bawdy play. ‘Habeas Corpus’ is a witty comedy about the 1970s permissive society. Set in Hove, the play revolves around the lives of the sex-obsessed middle-class. The main action of the play takes place in the household of Dr Arthur Wicksteed (Tony Bannister), a household, which, behind closed doors is not quite the respectable establishment it is thought to be... Whilst the lustful and adulterous Doctor Wicksteed pursues his attractive patient Felicity Rumpers (Lauren-Nicole Little), his wife Muriel Wicksteed (Cathryn Parker) is off chasing and forcing her voluptuous self upon various love interests, his gormless son Dennis Wicksteed (Chris Church) becomes trapped into a love triangle of an engagement, and his sister Connie Wicksteed (Lindsey Holledge) prances around wearing fake boobs in a desperate attempt to snare a man. You could cut the sexual tension in this play with a knife as each character is just as insatiable as the last. An endless round of trouser-dropping and sexual antics takes place throughout the play, and we are taken from one ridiculous circumstance to the next. The comedy aspect of the production is highlighted by the cast’s continual asides to the audience and through their random bursts of rhyming couplets. Lindsey Holledge was fantastic as the shy and dowdy Connie Wicksteed. Obsessed with improving her flat
chest Connie’s attempts to attract a partner by parading around in a pair of fake breasts are absolutely hysterical. She was wonderfully witty in her portrayal of Connie and really brought the character to life. Equally, Cathryn Parker was hilarious as Muriel Wicksteed. Her quest for sexual re-awakening and to pump the passion back into her life is brilliant, especially when she corners and launches herself at the unfortunate Mr Shanks (Damian Sutton) after a serious misunderstanding. The play becomes more and more farcical by the second as the characters all end up chasing each other in a bizarre lust-fuelled circle. The farce is only broken up by the pantomime-style speeches from the gossipy narrator Mrs Swabb (Margaret Kennedy) and the failed attempts at suicide by the attention-seeking Mr Purdue (Christopher Wears). The comic timing of the play was spot on and the entire cast were all individually brilliant. Their continual breaking of the play’s fourth wall really made the audience feel part of the action and had us laughing from start to finish. The Little Theatre have done it once again and pulled off another fantastic piece of comedy. A well-deserved round of applause to all involved. By Emily-Jane Polling

what’s on at the hop? ‘From the North Looking South’ by David Stacey and Graham Carlow Saturday 31st March – Thursday 112th April Tuesday – Saturday 10.30am-5pm; Sunday 12noon-5pm, Closed Monday David Stacey and Graham Carlow both studied photography in the 1980s at Derbyshire College at a time when it was known by some as the “small dark school of photography.” From their northern roots they now use the iconic landscape and scenic views of the south from their Lewes bases to explore photography as a medium. For Graham coming to Lewes has been a reconnection to the idea of landscape photography. His images are made from multiple photographs of the landscape and are an attempt to replay some of the experience of being there, while still being reminded of the image surface, and the assembly method. This is thinking past the idea of the photograph as an instance captured in one moment; closer to the process of making a painting or drawing, or even a film. David’s photographs use the “Through the Viewfinder” method to question the veracity of the photograph. In the same way that every individual’s perception of the world around them is a product of their past

‘Rooms and Roaming Residencies’ by Katie Sollohub Saturday 14th – Thursday 26th April Tuesday – Saturday 10.30am-5pm; Sunday 12noon-5pm; Closed Monday Katie’s paintings reflect her passionate love of objects, and the stories behind them. Perhaps this interest was sparked in early years; Katie’s father, having fled revolutionary Russia empty handed, filled his own life (and later the family home) with souvenirs, imbued with personal history. Recent work has enabled her to explore her response to other people’s homes, the spaces they inhabit, their collections of significant objects. Katie, originally from Winchester, now lives in Shorehamby-Sea between the river and the sea. She came to Brighton to study Social Anthropology at Sussex University whilst continuing with her art. She later completed her Foundation and HND Fine Art at Northbook College Worthing as a mature student. Katie now teaches, alongside Emily Ball, at the Seawhite Studio running art courses and she has also taught with the CCE (Centre for Continuing Education) at Sussex University for over 10 years. Kate holds open-house exhibitions at the Adur Festival in June and she frequently takes part in the Brighton Festival in May. Her work has recently been exhibited in HQ Gallery in Lewes, Swaffer’s Antiques Arundel, The Shoreditch Gallery in London, Cranleigh Arts Centre and the Taste of Art Gallery, Lightbox, Woking. She has also exhibited in London (ICA) and Internationally as part of the London Biennale.

The Pebble from the Seashore Morphs into a ‘Polly’-chromatic Trike The inspiration came from the flamboyant character of my dear friend Polly. One afternoon whilst sharing cappuccinos on the seafront and deliberating world economics, Polly told me she had found a pebble shaped like a bicycle saddle on Seaford beach, while walking her dog Molly. Could I do something with that? This is where the fun began for me... After a couple of days of numerous drawings and my imagination going wild, the idea of constructing a trike suddenly exploded. I decided that I could give Polly an eccentric piece of woven seashore furniture, coupled with an indoor garden. I felt this would totally capture her nature - strong, positive, bright, spiritual, witty and colourful (an angel with a nutty twist!). I strolled the shores of Seaford and Brighton, finding the wonders of things such as a cane, a black and white marble urn, bullets, a toothbrush holder, toys, teddies, an egg cup, a Saint Christopher, a bronze

dolphin, a myriad of shells, pebbles, driftwood, cuttlefish and starfish, not to mention the allimportant microcosm of parts for the finishing touches! Now the construction of Polly’s trike could begin. Oh my word! Trying to make an ‘Alice in Wonderland’, fairies with wings and ‘The Flintstones’ creation into an off-this-planet magical trike, from objects gathered from the beach, was a huge challenge! Four weeks of hard labour and mental gymnastics later, Polly’s gift of the saddle-shaped pebble to me had become the starting point of my gift to her which was now complete - a ‘polly’-chromatic trike - which included the compulsory additions of lights, flowers, pink ribbons, diamonds, glitter et al. Apart from the finishing touches, everything that went into the construction of the trike I had salvaged from Seaford and Brighton beaches. It’s amazing what you can find on your doorstep and just goes to show what you can do with it! Fork over the soil, pull weeds, check if any pruning needed, mulch plants. 3 Prune Forsythias and Chaenomeles only after flowering. Cut back the flowered shoots to three buds from their base. Otherwise cut one-third of old shoots to their base. 3 Start sowing vegetables for this year’s Annual Show! Check seed packet for sowing dates. Don’t sow all at once!

says that these plants were initially being developed to supply fresh food to astronauts on long-distance flights or scientists on moon based settlements. However, the only problem is that because of the lack of water involved in their growth they do need to be re-hydrated in water before use in the kitchen. Two-inch baby carrots, golfball sized cabbages, mini sprouts and beetroot have all been successful and may soon be available for garden use.

hould science get involved with gardening? It has been announced that NASA scientists have been experimenting for some time with genetically modified vegetable seed in order to solve the problem of providing food on long-distance space flight. Like Teflon coating and heat resistant tiles some spin-offs from the space industry can improve our way of life. Now, new strains of certain vegetable seed may soon be on the market to help gardeners grow larger quantities of veggies in a smaller space. These new seeds will produce dwarf plants, fast growing with smaller fruits or edible heads. They are grown in a container filled with a silicone hormone mixture which will feed the plants all the nutrients it needs throughout its short life. They do not need water.
FUSCIAS
Late March and early April are active months if you want to grow excellent Fuchsias. Prune established half-hardy plants, which have wintered under glass, as soon as they have started into growth. Pot on plants that have become pot bound into the next size pot. Failure to do this will result in premature flowering and week blooms. Towards the end of the month take cuttings from new growth with 3 or 4 pairs of leaves. Water the cuttings then leave in a warm place. If there is no bottom heat they will take up to four weeks to root and show signs of growth. Stop or pinch out the growing tip of cuttings after two pairs of leaves to encourage a bushy habit. After a month you can use a weak solution of high nitrogen feed on a regular basis. Shade plants under glass and spray daily. Keep pinching out all growing tips to further shape the plant and encourage lots of flowers. Take care of you lovely plant and enter it in our Main Show on the 4th August. Mike Parker (Chairman)

Now that the days are getting longer we can look forward to venturing out in our gardens more. At least the spring bulbs are coming out to give us some colour, and other perennials are pushing through the soil or budding up. I even have several blobs of frog spawn in the pond. Our speaker at our February meeting, Dr Barry Yates, gave a very interesting talk entitled ‘Plants of Rye Harbour Reserve’. He is the manager of the area and works hard with his staff to keep it as tidy and interesting as possible. It is run by three different committees, namely Sussex Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and Friends of Rye Harbour. The shingle beaches are created by the force of the sea movement and many rare plants exist on this area. The waters around Camber Castle consist of one large gravel pit, which involves a lot of work to make shallow areas for special birds to use and nest on. But is it not just about birds, as shingle attracts plants such as sea kale, the pretty mauve pea flower and yellow poppy, as well as the vipers bugloss which attracts many insects and special butterflies. Rabbits cause quite a big problem eating the rare plants so special fencing has to be erected to protect the habitat. All colours of valerian have no trouble in surviving and get so dominant that it has to be reduced by digging-up sessions! The salt marsh attracts the wading birds and special plants which like the salty conditions. The saline lagoon is covered most of the time with the sea but some lovely plants survive such as goose foot, pink beetroot and bearded grasses. The reed bed has tall grass on which sheep and goats graze. It has to be cleaned out mechanically each year. Lots of wonderful birds come in to breed. As reeds are so intense they make different calls to communicate.

Climbing High For the Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Appeal Seaford resident Charlotte Lloyd is aiming with three colleagues to raise in excess of £16,000 to contribute towards the £3.7m build cost for the ambitious new Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre. Inspired by Macmillan quote ‘we climb mountains...’, the four are planning to raise thousands by scaling the world’s highest freestanding mountain Mount Kilimanjaro. Peaking at a collossal 19,341 feet, the mountain will push the colleagues from Brighton’s MetLife to their limits during a 7-day trek up the Machamé Route in September this year. The pace should allow them to acclimatise gradually to the climate and increase their chances of reaching the mountain’s summit. The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre will cost £5.7m in total and hopes to be of benefit to thousands of people across the region. Around 40,000 people in Sussex are living with cancer, and many receive little or no information about their illness or treatment options at the time they need it most. The innovative new centre aims to enable everyone in Sussex affected by cancer to find the support they need, when they need it. Charlotte and her friends have already set the ball rolling by holding a cake and flower sale and a staff dress-down day. Just £25 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for an hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support. so any contribution to the cause can make a real difference. If you would like to support Charlotte achieve her £16,000 goal, donations can be made via the online fundraising page www.justgiving.com/Charlotte-Lloyd a company event could help raise funds. The donation of gifts to use as raffle prizes would also be gratefully received. If you would like to discuss the group’s efforts further, or suggest other ways in which you can help, Charlotte can be contacted on 07535 701031 or by email to charlotte.lloyd@metlife.uk.com. Further information on the Centre can be found at www.macmillan.org.uk/ sussexappeal.

You shall go to the ball, and I’ve got just the dress... Rosemary has more dresses than the average woman in fact, the top floor of her house is crammed full of them to fit all shapes and sizes: prom dresses, evening gowns and outfits for ‘mother of the bride’. As I ambled up and down the well-organised dress rails, musing over the drape of the damask and the flow of the silks, in awe of the broderie anglaise, the sequins, the glass beads and the rainbow hue of a hundred different chiffons, I found myself wishing that someone would invite me to a ball or a wedding so that I would have an excuse to try on lots of lovely dresses. Hiring an outfit for your special day isn’t as popular as it once was, but the opportunity to wear a new outfit every few months has its benefits; after all that’s what celebrities do, but I also found out that dress hire can be very liberating. Who’d have thought?........ Imagine, the mother of the groom stands nervously in a smartly decorated room, surrounded by hats, shoes and handbags. Her husband is sitting in the chair in the corner looking rather bemused. A smartly dressed and rather glamorous middle-aged woman removes the protective cover from a midnight blue silk two piece and hands it to the woman while guiding her to the changing area, drawing the curtains behind her. After a while the woman tentatively opens the curtains and presents herself into the spotlight in front of the full-length mirror. Every one agrees midnight blue is just not her colour, so she goes back into the curtained cubicle to undress. Holding the curtains together to allow a small gap she takes a second outfit to try on. Again the comments from the bored gentleman in the corner are none too positive and there are seventeen more dresses awaiting approval or otherwise. This time, rather than return to the changing room, she removes the dress where she stands and takes the next one. It’s been a while since she stood in front of quite such a well-lit large mirror, and even longer since she had the confidence to do it in front of a stranger. To her surprise she feels quite relaxed in her semi-nakedness and throughout the costume changes she has plenty of time to scan her body; its lumps and bumps, the evidence of her three pregnancies, the imperfections and the lovely curvy bits too. She smiles. She looks quite good naked. Gok Wan would be proud. Rosemary told me, “It happens all the time. Women come in feeling self-conscious and embarrassed and in no time at all they take their clothes off in front of me as if they do this every day.” Back in the store room, I gravitate towards the pink and lilac corseted, prom dress adorned with sequins and diamante, which spreads a third of the rail. With multiple layers of net

it could quite easily stand up all by its self. It cost £395 new, but Rosemary bought it from its frustrated owner for a tenth of that price. “She tried to sell it on Ebay but had no offers” Rosemary told me. She explained that nowadays, girls want to own a prom dress and rarely consider hiring one. “They think they will wear it again, but the next time these young girls get a chance to dress up, they won’t want to wear something they wore at their school prom.” Some times it make sense to hire a dress rather than buy one and have it hanging in a wardrobe until you reluctantly hand it to the charity shop. Rosemary gets plenty of offers for once-used prom dresses although rarely buys them. Rosemary is passionate about what she does, recounting stories of her customers, like the woman who turned up in a dress and cardigan from M&S, seeking a hat to ‘finish’ the ensemble. She was dressing for her son’s wedding. After Rosemary’s expert guidance, she left with a whole new outfit, including evening jacket and a hat that would have turned heads at Ascot. When she returned the items a few days later, she told Rosemary that the new man in her life said she looked “bloody fantastic”, that her son was in tears when he saw her and best of all she outshone her exhusband’s new younger wife and she told Rosemary “That was worth every penny.” A small but very satisfying victory for this ex-wife I feel. Then there was Barbara, who chose a beautiful skirt and matching corset to try on for her 25th wedding anniversary party. As Rosemary laced the corset she explained that Barbara didn’t need to keep her bra on as the corset did the job all by itself. “Oh I couldn’t go anywhere without a bra on” insisted Barbara “what if someone found out?” Rosemary assured her “Only two people know and I’ll never tell”. The bra came off, the corset fitted and Barbara left with an apprehensive but excited smile. Upon her return and with a little anticipation Rosemary asked how the celebrations had gone. Barbara told her “It was wonderful; everyone told me how fabulous I looked.” Asked if she had left her bra at home she answered “Yes, and it was the first time in my life I have ever left the house without a bra on!” And both women smiled and embraced this moment of true liberation. Are you listening Gok? June Bradbury
