SEAHAVEN VETERANS & ARMED FORCES DAY A GREAT SUCCESS Hundreds of visitors, including many veterans and their families, crowded onto the Martello Fields at Seaford for the Seahaven Veterans and Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29th June. The weather was kind and helped the day go well. The event was organised by Seaford Town Council and the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George, for the whole of the Lewes District. Throughout the day there was many arena displays, including the Seaford Rock and Jazz Band, a Flyball Dog display, Seaford Lifeguards, the Up theTempo Dance Group and a display of drill by the Newhaven detachments of Air Training Corps and Army Cadet Force. The Parade took place at 12.30, marching behind the piper and the Seaford Sword from the Martello Tower down to the Arena. The salute was taken by the Lord Lieutenant, Mr Peter Field, the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Anthony White and the President of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George, Mr Don Mabey MBE. A problem of how to get the saluting party to the saluting point was solved by Seaford Taxis which provided a multipassenger taxi, free of charge, as their contribution to the event. When the saluting party returned to the arena, it was greeted by a fanfare trumpet by two members of the Seaford Silver Band. Before the inspection the branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant, led the prayers and gave a blessing for the day. There were many charity and other stalls around the field as well as a fun fair, and a special mini-tank
4
arena where youngsters could have the thrill of driving a realistic tank. Helping the day go with a swing was the Tavern in a Tent, provided by the Seaford and Seaford Martello Rotary Clubs. The Royal Society of St George, as a special tribute, gave all veterans on parade a voucher for their first drink in the Tavern. As an attraction for families a fun fair was set up in the Martello Fields. The parking for the day was organised by the Newhaven Station of the National Coastwatch Institute which raised funds for its own charity. Finance for the day was not only provided by the organisers, but also by the town councils of Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe. Over £340 was raised towards the cost of the event by the sale of soft toys and a bucket collection. The profits of the day will be donated to Blind Veterans UK (St Dunstans) and their President Ray Hazzan will collect a cheque at the Seahaven Branch’s next lunch at the Green Man at Ringmer on Friday 12th July. Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, who commanded the parade said “What a wonderful day. So many people made a great effort to help the event go so well, especially those from Seaford Town Council as well as our own St George’s members. The support from so many organisations and spectators, as well as the turn out of the veterans and cadets, were a major factor in the day’s success.” Photos: top: the mini-tanks were a great success to thrill young and old, middle: following the inspection by the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Seaford, the Standard marched off parade, bottom: the civic leaders from all four towns in the Lewes District together with the Chair of Lewes District Council supported the Veterans & Armed Forces Day. As well as the Lord Lieutenant the event was also visited by Mr Norman Baker MP.

Successful Weekend for Seaford’s Twin Visitors The Seaford Twinning Association has just hosted a 4-day weekend visit by friends of the town from the twin town Bönningstedt. Also there were visitors from their twin town, Crivitz. There was a sunny if breezy welcome for 30-odd souls with good food at the Sailing Club Cafe on the Prom. Seaford’s Mayor Cllr Anthony White held a Reception for 40 at the Seaford Council Chamber with an ‘English Tea’ - cucumber sandwiches and sponge cakes. Amongst the guests were the Deputy Mayor Mark Brown, the Mayor of Bönningstedt Peter Liske; the Mayor of Crivitz Ulli Güssman, and Martina Kaddatz, the Vice-President of East Sussex’ twin county of Pinneberg. An evening pub meal was held for 20 at The White Lion.
The second day began with an excellent guided walk of Alfriston led by Kevin Gordon and translator Andrew Savile. In the evening there was a guided tour of Bishopstone’s Saxon Church of St. Andrew. This was followed by a bilingual quiz with Fish and Chips from Osborne’s. There were also teams from the Seaford German Conversationalists’ Group. On day 3 a group of thirty visited the Seaford Lifeguards HQ and control room, to hear that they had been recognised as the premier lifeguard outfit in the land! A number of the group also visited the Logan Family’s Charity Garden Party with the Silver Band in Sutton Avenue. On the last day a group of 30 enjoyed fresh country air with a game of Pub Skittles, and a wonderful cold buffet at The Royal Oak Barcombe, before being taken to Gatwick for their journey back to Hamburg. The weekend was only made possible by the generosity of Seaford families in acting as hosts. This was Seaford at its best! Next year Seaford Twinners travel to Germany for the 30th Anniversary of the Twinning itself. Reception for German visitors to Seaford. Mayor Anthony White and Peter White (town crier) with German representatives.

THE Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail 2013 Geoff Stonebanks has organised the 2nd Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail in order to raise funds for the new Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Brighton. The first Coastal Garden Trail was held in August of last year. Offering visitors the opportunity to enter nine gorgeous gardens in East Sussex, the event raised an impressive total of £2,600, and with 22 gardens signed up for the event in 2013, stretching along the coast from Brighton to Eastbourne, the Trail’s second year is set to be even bigger and better than the first. There will be nine in Seaford alone this year. Jack Dunckley, who won a silver gilt medal at Chelsea earlier this year, will be opening the Trail at 11am on Saturday 3rd August in Geoff ’s Driftwood garden. Geoff is thrilled that the talented young gardener has agreed to be involved in the event and met him at Chelsea. Geoff said “I wrote to him and almost immediately got a positive response! I was working on the NGS stand at Chelsea and went along to meet him and congratulate him on his SilverGilt award; he was charming and told me he was delighted to be opening
the Macmillan Garden Trail. Apart from meeting local enthusiastic gardeners, he said he was looking forward to seeing first hand all the different gardens on display.” Jack told Geoff, “I am usually busy designing and planting various gardens for clients, so it will be very interesting to see what ideas other people have had.” In his involvement with the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, Jack will join another well-known figure: horticulturalist and broadcaster Christine Walkden, who is the Trail’s patron. The event is also generously sponsored by Moira House Girls’ School in Eastbourne – which is undertaking all of the printing for the event – as well as national magazine Garden News. All gardens on the trail will open on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August from 11am to 5pm and refreshments will be available in several on the trail! Full details with maps and detailed brochure on www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk or by scanning the code (left). Enquiries 01323 899296. Photos: Geoff left with Jack Dunckley. SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB DONATION TO PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH FUND At a meeting of Seaford Martello Rotary Club held at Seaford Golf Club on 3rd June the President, Julian Turner, welcomed guest speaker Maggie Blanks from Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Maggie started the charity after the death of her husband from pancreatic cancer. She discovered that very little money was being allocated to the research of this devastating illness, which now has the 5th highest mortality rate in the UK, and has an extremely poor survival rate when compared with other forms of cancer. Her charity, known as The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (www.pcrf.org.uk) was established nine years ago and has raised over £5 million, donating grants to various centres specifically trying to identify causes, early identification and treatment of this disease. In 2012 it gave grants totalling £1 million to six centres. President Julian presented Maggie with a cheque for £2,000, comprising a donation from Martello Rotary of £1,000 and a personal donation of £1,000. Maggie expressed her sincere thanks and said that the money would be put to very good use. Rotarian Jackie Arkwell gave the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the club.

Rotarian of the Year and a new President takes office At a recent meeting of Seaford Martello Rotary Club the outgoing President Julian Turner presented Jim Austin with the Club’s ‘Rotarian of the Year’ award. The club members had nominated him as the most deserving recipient of the annual award, in recognition of all his efforts during the past year as Chair of the Projects committee. Jim has been the driving force behind the club’s efforts to set up a food hamper scheme for families in need, in partnership with local charity WAVES, which is ongoing. Julian then welcomed Janice Vince as the new President for the Rotary year 2013/14. Dave Winsor becomes PresidentElect. Janice is a retired teacher and is the third woman to hold the office. Her first association with Rotary International was in her teenage years when she joined her father (then a member of Ilford Rotary Club, in the London Borough of Redbridge) on a 14mile charity walk. Walking in the fabulous countryside around Seaford is still one of Janice’s leisure activities. She also enjoys horse-riding, a recreation she has pursued for more than 50 years. The club continues to support local and national charities and in 2013/14 will build on its existing links with CTAS, a charity which helps to provide fresh water for remote villages in Nepal. The president’s personal charities during the coming 12 months will be the British Heart Foundation and the National Stroke Association. The club meets on Monday evenings at Seaford Golf Club and welcomes new members. For more information email: seafordmartellorotaryclub@gmail.com

SEAFORD MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS GROUP Recording and preserving Seaford’s past
The Seaford Monumental Inscriptions Group is recording the inscriptions on monuments and memorials in Seaford. Weathering has made the inscriptions on the older gravestones difficult to read, so a small group of volunteers has mounted a rescue project. The volunteers bring a wide range of interests and skills to the project, which involves liaising with churchwardens and recording, photographing and word-processing inscriptions. Finally, the inscriptions are put onto the group’s website, www.seamig.org.uk, and published in book form. Everybody involved contributes to reading the inscriptions, which is truly a group effort. The group has just completed its survey of St Peter’s,

East Blatchington, and this is available in a book which includes an index and plans, a help to local historians and anyone interested in pursuing family history. The group has moved on to make a start on recording St Leonard’s, Seaford. St Peter’s churchyard is beautifully secluded by belts of trees, a legacy of planting in the 1860s by the Revd Robert Dennis and his wife Elizabeth. Unfortunately these are now densely overgrown, and a good many graves have been overwhelmed by trees and shrubs. The marble obelisk of Blatchington’s last squire, Robert Lambe, who died in 1922, was buried in the shrubbery, until the Monumental Inscriptions Group cleared one side so that you can see it inside its green grotto. There is room in St Peter’s churchyard for 300 graves, too few for a churchyard that served Blatchington village from at least 1200 until 1899, by which time it must have been filled five times over. Later burials overlie and sometimes disturb earlier burials and it was concern about this that led to the closure of the churchyard for burials at the end of the nineteenth century. Most later burials from the parish have been at Seaford Cemetery. One gravestone caught the group’s eye, with its fine carving of a sabre and crossed pistols. Surprisingly, it was for a young soldier, Private Stephen Rabbit, who died at Blatchington Barracks aged only 23 in 1804, a time when most soldiers had no marked grave. The verse below is still legible in the right light, and a line from it has been borrowed for the title of the book. All you that come my grave to see, As I am now, so you must be. As I am now, so you must be: Monumental Inscriptions at St Peter’s, East Blatchington is available at £7 from www.lulu.com or direct from Rodney Castleden at Rookery Cottage, Blatchington Hill, Seaford BN25 2AJ. Supporting SEAFORD Lifeguards Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD & SURROUNDING AREA with Bob Eade August The long warm days of August bring with them the highest numbers of butterflies and other insects including day flying moths, dragonflies, damselflies and bees. The chalk downland of the South Downs is home to the beautiful Chalkhill Blue butterfly. The male butterfly of this species is seen on warm days flying low over the grasses of the Downs searching out females that generally stay hidden in the longer grass. This butterfly starts to emerge during July, but by August numbers will have built up and in some colonies thousands of butterflies can be seen flying together. In 2012 on the slopes above Butchershole Bottom in Friston Forest an estimated 800,000 butterflies were flying together in early August. An amazing sight as their light silvery blue wings caught the sunshine, which gave the appearance of a blizzard over the short turf. Other good sites for this species include the slopes above Wilmington, Bo Peep and High and Over, as well as most of the downland slopes in the area. The 2nd brood of Wall Brown is also now well underway; this brood is often around twice the size of the May brood. Once again the downland around Seaford is one of the best areas in England for seeing this species with the paths around High and Over, Bo Peep and Windover Hill giving the greatest chances. The Silver Spotted Skipper is another butterfly that relies on the short grassland of the Downs. During the 1970s this butterfly was scarce with just one main colony near Wilmington. However, since that time, this small butterfly has spread west over the surrounding Downs and is now a regular sight on many of the slopes. The Silver Spotted Skipper are found flying very fast, occasionally stopping to nectar on downland flowers such as scabious and knapweed. They rely heavily on grazing by rabbits that allows Sheep’s Fescue to grow; this grass is the foodplant of the caterpillar. Another butterfly that uses Sheep’s Fescue as its
foodplant is the Grayling. This is a much larger butterfly, but unlike the Silver Spotted Skipper this insect has become much rarer in recent years. The Clockwise from left: Chalkhill Blue, Grayling, Wall Brown, only Sussex site for this Silver Spotted Skipper species is near Windover Hill, where it can be found gliding over the grassland on warm days. Once settled Graylings rely very much on camouflage. They always settle with their wings closed and they generally hide their forewings behind the hindwings. They then tilt their body at an angle to get the full benefit from the heat of the sun as well as making their shadow less obvious. Even when seeing a Grayling land they can be hard to locate on the ground. For more details of our local butterflies including recent sightings please go to www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk

variety of youth sessions at Mercread Youth Centre and Seaford Baptist Church; arts sessions at Arts@TheCrypt; Lifesaving courses from Seaford Lifeguards; the summer reading challenge at the library; regular table tennis, badminton and trampoline courses at Downs Leisure Centre and weekly swim sessions at Seaford Head Pool.
The Seaford Summer Activities Programme co-ordinated by Seaford Town Council and Wave Leisure Trust runs from 24th July until 1st September. Seaford Town Council has co-sponsored the programme. Councillor Adrian Campbell, Seaford Town Council’s lead on the implementation of the Seaford Physical Activity Framework Action Plan says, ‘This is a great summer initiative brought about through positive partnerships with local organisations working together. This gives the town’s young people fun and stimulating things to do over the holidays.’ Peter Crowley, Managing Director of Wave Leisure Trust said: “We are delighted to be offering this joined up initiative for the first time this year for young people in Seaford with the Town Council. This programme is an amazing opportunity to try lots of new activities across the town at very low cost.”

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

David Egan 01323 890327 • 07740 798662 daviegan@tiscali.co.uk www.degangas.co.uk The beautiful village green in front of the Norman church has hosted a summer fair for generations. Now it’s grown to a four-day festival for all the family. You’ll find old-fashioned games of skill like tilt the bucket, toss the bale, bowl for a pig, and welliethrowing, along with a fun fair that’ll take you back in time – not forgetting pony rides and a bouncy castle for the kids. There are stalls full of great local produce, tea and cakes in the village hall, prize draws, historic walking tours, a classic car show – and that’s not all. Don’t forget the art exhibition, dog show, band music, Morris dancing, a guided tour of Britain’s biggest new vineyard…plus even more attractions in a full four-day programme of events that truly have something for everybody.

East Blatchington LectureS “Road to the Sacred - The Wonder of Icons”. This title for the lecture given by Rev. Dr. Andrew Mayes in June attracted a full complement of folk eager to learn more about this generally little known subject. They were not disappointed. Several examples from Dr Mayes’s personal collection were displayed to the audience, followed by his detailed explanation of each which held everyone in a state of intrigue. From the many comments overheard during refreshments at the end, it was obvious that the meeting had been a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable success.
On July 2nd, the experiences, thrills and spills encountered by a top award-winning crime writer were ably described in the lecture given by author Peter James. Being also a staunch supporter of Sussex Police he was escorted into St. Peter’s Church by a member of the local constabulary with a spontaneous welcoming applause from the capacity audience. The lecture was enhanced with a full quota of humour for which he is well known. Copies of his latest book “Dead Man’s Time” were available for sale afterwards, each one being signed individually by Peter, to whom our grateful thanks are extended for devoting so much of his valuable time to our event.

Shirley, who arranges these lectures, will herself give the final presentation of the year on August 7th. She is a long-standing member of the Richard 111 Society, and in view of the recent discovery of the skeleton of this much-maligned monarch from beneath a car park in Leicester, she has offered to bring us up to date on this latest change to our history, and will explain the hard work and research the society has carried out over the years, resulting in this latest discovery. It’s a fascinating story. Thanks go out to all who have supported these

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Summer 2013
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
We open this newsletter with the excellent news that our membership for 2013 has reached over 1,000 households and is still rising. Only a few years ago it was less than 200, and we are especially pleased, because we have achieved our interim goal as hoped and the increase looks like being continued for the coming years. We are also pleased to have had a number of new deliverers come forward, and they assist our expansion by distributing the Spring and Autumn newsletters in their local roads - but more volunteers are still needed to deliver to more roads. If you are not already a member, please consider joining – there is a very modest subscription fee and you receive the benefit of being part of an organisation that “Promotes Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction”, has regular contact with the local police, sends out regular updates and alerts by email, and allows you to claim a reduction in home insurance premium with some companies.
CERTIFICATE FOR SETTING UP THE TOWN WIDE NO COLD CALLING ZONE
We were Regional Finalists in the 2013 National Neighbourhood & Home Watch Network Awards and received a certificate recognising our achievements in setting up the Seaford and Bishopstone No Cold Calling Zone. The zone has been in existence for over a year and the police confirm there has been a very significant drop, approx. 80%, in unwanted nuisance calls and a similar reduction in the number of door step sellers that were prevalent in the past.
RECENT INCIDENTS and POLICE NEWS
Notwithstanding the above, there was a recent case of Distraction Theft outside Morrisons supermarket recently, whereby a lady was returning her trolley to the store and was aggressively approached by two young women insisting the lady had dropped some money. They harassed her to take it from them, and in the ensuing confusion they managed to take her Debit Card, which they later used to withdraw
28
money from her account. It is thought they watched her at the checkout and memorised her PIN. This was a very unfortunate incident, so we warn you to be on guard when using your cards, and not to allow yourself to get distracted at crucial moments. There are reports that a “white van” has been seen cruising round the town with the occupants looking for odd jobs and driveways to repair. The Index Number could be BK04 YJY and the police would be grateful to hear if anybody is approached by them. If you have any information, please call them on 101. There is also a report from a NHW Member of another “white van” with two males calling to sell cheese and fish. This contravenes the spirit of the No Cold Calling Zone and we ask you to dissuade these men if they call on you. The police are taking opportunities to distribute leaflets under Operation Sunshine. Basically, this leaflet gives you tips on maintaining the security of your home during the summer months when you are more likely to have windows and doors open, be out of earshot in the garden and have garden equipment on display etc. They also include a reminder not to leave car windows open and doors unlocked, even if parked on your driveway. Remember, the opportunist thief only needs a few seconds to enter your house, garden or car and make off with any handy belongings. Lastly in this section, we can report that enough new volunteers have come forward that Community Speedwatch is up and running again in Seaford. Although not run directly by the police, it is carried out under their auspices and a number of motorists have been advised of their excessive speed and other infringements. The aim of Community Speedwatch is to educate speeding and errant drivers and to promote safe driving habits, so it is unfortunate that some drivers have been verbally abusive to the volunteers.
NHW DELIVERERS MEETING 2013
Following the success of the inaugural Deliverers’ Meeting held last year, we are making arrangements
Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Summer 2013
for the 2013 Meeting to be held on Wednesday 30th October at 7.30 pm at St Leonard’s Church Hall. This is an informal meeting to which all deliverers will be invited to attend, where we give an appraisal of our current progress and projects, provide an opportunity to meet the committee and discuss any relevant issues, plus a guest speaker will be invited along to give a short address on a related topic. More details will be issued nearer the time.
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS
Your Neighbourhood Watch Committee continues to attend and support the local Police Panel Meetings. These meetings are set up by the local community police and chaired by a local champion. The aim is to allow the public to have direct communication with their local Community Police Officers and to prioritise the topics that need attention in their area. The next meetings for 2013 at the time of writing are: West Panel: 31st July, 7pm at Bishopstone Church Hall, East Panel: 20th August, 7.30pm at Vale Road Community Centre, Central Panel: 11th Sept, 6pm at the Police Station/ Council Offices, Church Street.
CALL FOR SECRETARY and PUBLICITY OFFICER
The NHW Association is run by a small committee, and we would be very grateful if anybody would be willing to assist us by becoming our Secretary, to help with the administration of meetings etc., or our Publicity Officer, to assist with the publication and distribution of the newsletters. You do not need to be an expert in these areas, but would need to be able to devote a few hours a month to the cause. Equally, it might appeal to a student who wants to gain some admin experience or bolster their CV with voluntary work. We would be pleased to hear from any interested party.

The Bluffer’s Guide to Cricket A writer from Seaford who has played village cricket in Sussex for 25 years has co-written the new edition of The Bluffer’s Guide to Cricket. “It’s been difficult justifying my absence on Sundays for the past quarter of a century but, at least, I can now say that I’ve got a book out of it,” said James Trollope, who lives with his partner and two children in Edinburgh Road. The Guide is timed to coincide with the Ashes series between England and Australia. “Thankfully, my cricket has been played out of the spotlight,”said James who plays for Twineham and Wineham CC. “We did once have a spectator but I think he was a rambler who’d lost his way.” As the talk turns to the Ashes in pubs and offices this summer, the idea of the guide is to equip those who don’t know much about the game with enough knowledge to join in the banter. “If you’re a quick learner and have enough bluster you may come across as something of an expert.” said James. “The adventurous bluffer may even try to give the impression that, in their time, they were a more than decent cricketer.” James, 57, says he’s never really shone at the game except when he made a century for a Sussex colts side in the 1970s - or could that be a bluff?

ROTARY CLUB OF SEAFORD Seaford Primary MAD Fayre
Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors
In April of this year we received a request for fundraising assistance from Seaford Primary School. Carol Edwards, the MAD (Making a Difference) Chair, explained that funds will be raised at the School Summer Fayre to buy a wooden Thatched Gazebo for use as an outdoor classroom. President Paul went along to the Fayre on Saturday 8 June to join in the fun, and give our support with a £100 donation.
Phil McMullen,17, has been the Junior Musical Director (MD) at the Barn Theatre for nearly two years, volunteering and working alongside young people at the community youth theatre group, Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ). The National Operatic and Dramatic Association Summer School offers an unrivalled training opportunity for all those involved in amateur theatre and SMTJ wanted to invest in its young MD and fundraised and looked for support from the community. The Rotary Club of Seaford was delighted to help and made a donation of £330, which will enable Phil to attend the Summer School. The experience that Phil will gain from this course in August will benefit over 40 young members of the group when he returns from the University of Warwick in Coventry. President Elect Mike Logan went along to a rehearsal at the Barn Theatre to meet our budding impresario Phil, together with SMTJ co-founder Paula Woolven. For more information go to: www.seafordmusicaltheatre.co.uk/smtjuniors.html Photo: Phil, Paula Woolven, Mike Logan
Rotary Club of Seaford Supports ABC Also in June we saw an item in a Seaford local newspaper about the ABC Fund run by Anne Bickmore. She was asking for help with making and supplying Christmas hampers for local needy families. As an existing supporter of Anne’s charity, we responded with a donation of £500, which she will use towards her Christmas hampers this year. She thanked us for the donation, stating that the list of those in need is getting longer. We wish to congratulate Anne for the British Empire Medal0 awarded to her in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Children of Chernobyl
On Friday 14 June, a group of 16 Children of Chernobyl visited Seaford Head School together with Sheila Nash of the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (Mid-Sussex) charity, and two interpreters Ira & Sergie. John Owen, then President of the Rotary Club of Seaford, initiated this activity in 2010, and this was the fourth time the school has hosted the children who are aged between 8 and 12. This year’s programme included climbing on the school’s climbing wall, a light-hearted drama session, a musical experience, and lunch, all helped by a select group of Seaford Head students. Our thanks go the school for again supporting this worthwhile venture.

Safety in Action Each year Lewes District Council and Sussex Police organise a Safety in Action week at Newhaven Fort, where children from year six at all the local primary Schools are shown various aspects of safety in the environment. When President Paul Vaesen went on the Monday he tagged on to a group from Annecy School to see what they were learning. It is an excellent way to get across the safety message to children in various different environments – roads, railways, buses, cycling, electricity, swimming and even ‘Stranger Danger’. We support this event by donating the prize for the winning School, and President Paul attended Wivelsfield Primary School in June to present them with a cheque for £175. They were also presented with a shield by Chief Inspector Jason Tingley. The children were congratulated on getting the best marks of all the schools taking part, and it was stressed that the important thing was how much they learnt about safety in the environment, particularly for them to be aware of ‘Stranger Danger’.

Heads Up for Wildlife Sussex Wildlife Trust is taking over the management of Seaford Head nature reserve, a popular local beauty spot famous for its iconic views of Seven Sisters and the Cuckmere Valley. Seaford Head is also a valuable site for local wildlife. Its flower-rich chalk grassland supports skylarks, butterflies including adonis blue, silver-spotted skipper and rare insects such as the forester moth and potter flower bee. Seaford Head is also an important stopping off point for migratory birds and colonies of kittiwakes, which breed on the chalk cliffs during the summer months.

Sussex Wildlife Trust took over the management of the 83-hectare site for Seaford Town Council at the beginning of June. Co-ordinating the conservation work at Seaford Head is the Trust’s new Assistant Reserves Officer, Sarah Quantrill. Sarah said ‘This valuable nature reserve is much loved by the public but it’s also vital for local wildlife. By regularly grazing the site and keeping scrub low we can help improve the chalk grassland habitat for birds, bees and butterflies.’ Chris Lowmass Chair of the Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve Management Committee said “The management committee and I are delighted that Sussex Wildlife Trust will now be managing the reserve; we look forward to a long partnership with this greatly respected organisation.” As well as hands-on practical conservation, Sussex Wildlife Trust also plans to run regular guided wildlife walks on the nature reserve for members of the public. For more information about Sussex Wildlife Trust please see our website www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk

Back in March the Lionesses organised a Barn Dance in Seaford, which was raising money for Leo House at Home. Leo House is a registered charity established by Brighton Lions Club to help life-limited children, young people and their families living in East and Mid Sussex as well as in Brighton & Hove. However, as there is no children’s hospice in East Sussex or Brighton & Hove, the Leo House nurses are based at Chestnut Tree House Hospice near Arundel and work alongside their community nurses. Earlier in June, therefore, four Lionesses arranged a visit to Chestnut Tree House to present the cheque. We were given a tour of the hospice, which is an attractive and welcoming building, superbly equipped and in extensive grounds, and we were also entertained and informed by some of the inspirational staff. The whole atmosphere is cheerful and positive, despite the often very sad and difficult situations they are dealing with. The cheque was duly handed over to this very worthwhile cause. The end of June is changeover time for Lions and Lioness Clubs, when the new team of officers for the next year take up their posts. To celebrate this occasion forty Lionesses, Lions, partners and friends gathered at Seaford Golf Club on Saturday 29th June for a carvery lunch. After lunch and coffee the new Presidents, Lioness Esther Beerling and Lion Terry Dezille, were presented with their chains of office by the outgoing Presidents, Lion Gloria Lazarus and Lioness Audrey Clark, who were thanked for all their hard work over the previous year and presented with gifts and cards from the clubs.

Owner Jason, Sussex born and resident of Seaford went into Hairdressing as a Saturday boy at 15, in the aptly named shop ‘Dodgy Norm’s’ in Southwick. With a natural hair cutting ability he undertook a Hairdressing course at City College, Brighton, graduating in 1991. Since then Jason has worked in Vances Barber Shop in Peacehaven, Diamond Geezers in Newhaven and Andy & Marves in Lewes. In 2009 he took the leap of faith and opened his very own shop in Lewes. Three years later and after his increasing popularity, he opened his seconds shop in Seaford. Having his name above the door was a very proud moment, along with the BBA Accreditation. He has still has plans to expand his business further. He has just recently introduced Hot Towel Shaving and soon will be offering Threading too. But Jason prides himself mostly in the quality of his haircuts, and even after 26 years of barbering, maintains that you never know the job completely. ‘There will always be someone with a challenging head of hair, that’s why I love my job so much’.
Scott’s career in Hairdressing was a given as he is one in a family of hairdressers. In 1997, along with his wife, he opened his first ladies hairdressing shop in Horsham, and managed a team of 7 girls, as well as working on the shop floor. By the time he moved on, he was over-seeing two shops and learnt that customer care and reliability were most important when dealing with the general public. His next port of call was at Vances Barber Shop in Peacehaven where he took the opportunity to develop his barbering skills further. ‘It’s an interesting shop to work in. Vance is definitely one of a kind!’ After Vances, Scott travelled to Australia and spent two-and-half years working in salons ‘down under’ which was a great experience. On his return to the UK, he moved to Seaford and worked in local barber shops, building up a firm clientele and eventually with 16 years of experience under his belt, he took the opportunity to launch and manage Jasons new shop in Seaford.

DEADHEADING & DISBUDDING
What’s the difference between deadheading and disbudding? Many popular flowers in your garden will flower throughout the summer without you having to worry about deadheading or disbudding. However, if you want to encourage larger or better flowers then the simple action of disbudding will not take too long and you will see the difference in bigger and better blooms. The most popular flowers for disbudding are Dahlias, Roses and Chrysanthemums. The action involves reducing to only one bud per stem. Remove all side shoots when about half an inch in length leaving just the main end bud to grow on. Complete this action by the middle of August for autumn flowering varieties. Deadheading improves many other summer flowering plants and shrubs. Just remove all dead or dying flower heads, which will encourage more flower heads to form. Flowering will be prolonged over the summer period into autumn and it will keep the garden tidy. If in doubt refer to a good reference book or ask at one of our Society meetings!

Seaford Gardening Club At long last we are getting some summer-like weather! It will be relaxing and pleasant to sit out in our gardens between sessions of planting, weeding and generally enjoying our treasured plots. Some gardens in the town will be open to the public this month, so make sure you visit them to see other ideas and displays. At our meeting in June we had a very interesting talk by Alan Grey entitled ‘South Downs and Vale of Sussex through the Seasons’. Besides being the Head of Geography/Geology at Varndean 6th Form College he is a part-time Schools’ Leader with Sussex Wildlife Trust at Seven Sisters Country Park. We started our journey with winter snow scenes, walking up Devil’s Dyke and seeing hand gliders landing in the snow-covered fields; a group of hardy swimmers braving the cold waters on Christmas Day and some beautiful shots of waves cascading over the breakwater at Newhaven and flood waters at Alfriston. Spring came in with a photo of mating frogs! We then saw a sea of bluebells and a variety of birds to be found at Cuckmere Haven, and a Kittiwake colony at Splash Point. We also saw slides of migrant birds such as Spoonbill, Avocet, Wheatear and Rock Pipit. Some of his photos were quite magical – a winkle leaving a trail in the sand and a Magpie giving a ewe a haircut! Summer arrived with shots of a party of 6th form students making notes on an exercise in the Country Park and Alan’s two great nieces enjoying finds while pond dipping. We were then treated to lovely views of the Seven Sisters’ cliffs in different lights and perspectives. He also showed us photos of the Brighton Wheel at interesting angles. Autumn slides showed the beautiful tree colours at Sheffield Park and a beautiful sunset at Newhaven. A truly first-class photographer and we will definitely ask him for a return visit to give us a talk on cloud formations etc. Our chairman suggested he enter photos for the Countryfile Calendar competition – he could be a winner! There will not be a talk in August as the club is on its summer break but we resume our meetings on Wednesday 25th September at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, when a brand-new programme of speakers for 2013/2014 will be available. Please phone Anne Silk on 01323 491331 for information or visit the website www.seaford-sussex. There are a few seats available for our outing to Compton Acres on 14 September. Non members welcome – just phone Anne for details.

As with any outdoor event we were weather dependent, the somewhat strong winds, hindered the erection of the marquees on Friday - on Saturday we were somewhat perturbed to see one of the marquees has done a 90-degree turn!! However, on the day we were lucky and after a cloudy start the sun shone and the wind abated.

This year saw Seaford Silver Band perform in new garden surroundings, courtesy of our neighbour, enabling visitors to sit back and enjoy the music. We are grateful to the band for giving us their time as the music very much enhanced the occasion. Many of our visitors including those from Bönningstedt who were on an exchange visit, commented on the atmosphere of the afternoon and how much they enjoyed the occasion. Pippa Logan

Seaford Community Garden Reviewing the past very busy 12 months, Seaford Community Garden looks very different. Like a stroppy teenager, it is going through a period of transition, one where you can see its promise but it’s not there quite yet. For example, a new border has been planted out with perennials opposite the entrance gate, but of course at the moment it looks a bit raw, with more soil than flowers, but give it a couple of years and it will be a thing of beauty. Our organic veg is mostly romping along, with runner beans racing up their poles and broad beans trying to break out of their string cage, but like everywhere else all is a bit late due to the cold spring. The classroom is up and looking splendid, just awaiting a few finishing touches, like windows and paint. Once structurally complete we can get the water butts connected to the guttering and begin irrigating the veg, which at present is watered mostly by can.
amount to us following their hugely successful garden party in June, and with which we are going to buy foldaway tables and chairs for the classroom. We would also like to thank Southdown Housing for help with our printing and B&Q – the begonias the Newhaven store donated recently are a riot of colour by the way – for their continued support. But please come in and see all of this for yourselves. We are open from 9.30-12.30 on Wednesday mornings during the year and from 10-12 on Saturday mornings during the summer and early autumn. If you’ve not been before then we’d love to show you round, from flower beds to veg, from tomatoes, peppers and aubergines in the polytunnel to wildlife pond.Yes, it’s all here at Seaford Community Garden. The classroom was bought with a very generous donation from the Keith Baker Charitable Trust which continues to support causes dear to local man Keith Baker, son of popular teacher Dilys Blythe and Eric Baker who lost his life on active service in World War II. Keith was a trained weather forecaster and a physics teacher, retiring in the 1990s. He died following a stroke in 2007 and the trust was set up in his memory. Outside the classroom we now have an elegant large round wooden table and chairs expertly renovated by the Princes Trust, so perching on uncomfortable straw bales inside the leaky polytunnel can be consigned to fond memory. And speaking of furniture we owe a loud round of applause to Pippa and Michael Logan, who have donated a very generous

Facebook postings of his work attracted encouraging comments and last year he showed over 35 paintings at Uckfield Art Trail and Maresfield Art Weekend. He has now been offered a scholarship by the Mouth & Foot Painting Company to become one of 36 mouth-painting artists in the UK. For more info go to http://www.westyuk.co.uk

How long have you worked in your current role? When I first came to Seaford I was lucky enough to meet Diane Costello, who makes fabulous handbags. She told me that at that time, no one was opening houses for Artwave so Mike and I decided that our house would be ideal as an Open House. With Diane’s help, we contacted local artists and makers who set up shop throughout the downstairs of our home and each year it has grown and gone from strength to strength. This year we have 22 artists and makers showcasing their work and we have also expanded to include a tea tent with home-made cakes, a children’s area and a massage tent where Christan Dormon gives seated massage. Mike sells vinyl records from the ‘50s ‘60s and ‘70s and we now run workshops for adults and children over the three weekends of the festival. What do you like best about Seaford? One of the first people I met when we moved to Seaford told me that “Seaford is the best-kept secret in East Sussex.” Well, I think that is a great pity. I wish it wasn’t such a secret! Seaford has so many high-quality, enjoyable art and culture activities going on that we should be shouting from the rooftops about it and this is why we created Seaford Splash!
what’s on at the crypt?
‘Dual Perspective’ is an art exhibition of new work by Rosemary Drysdale (Rory) and Dilys Seddon to be held at the Crypt Gallery, Seaford, from 17th to 22nd August 2013, 10.30am until 4.30pm. This exhibition celebrates our long-term friendship along with a mutual interest in teaching art and exploring our own development as artists. We both take pleasure from studying our environment, particularly landscapes and gardens, using this research as inspiration for our personally distinctive yet complementary work. We work in all medias depending on the subjects, ranging from representational styles to exploring abstract shapes and colours.

Seaford Kurlers Hello readers. It is time again for my article from the Seaford Kurlers. Strange things have happened since I last wrote - we have sunshine – whoopee!! Since my last article, the kurlers have been to see the new Mary Rose museum at Portsmouth on a day that was hot and sunny. The whole of the exhibition site has so much to see and to do; a day is not nearly enough time to do it all in. There is a lot of walking to do, so it’s not for the faint hearted. Most of us did the harbour cruise and we were there whilst a warship went through the ceremony for being decommissioned. The Mary Rose exhibition is something of a Wonder of the World. If you can get to see it, then do; the achievement is magic. The port must have realised that Seaford Kurlers were going to visit and put up signs accordingly - see the photo below!
Collection and delivery. Clocks and barometers bought and sold.

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT William Pitt (1708-1778) William Pitt (the elder) was MP for Seaford between 1747 and 1754 and Prime Minister between 1766 and 1768. It is probable that Pitt visited Seaford and may have stayed in the building in the High Street which faces Broad Street (now the Golden Palace) and was once known as Pitt House. 1754 was also the year he married his wife Hester Grenville - they had three sons and two daughters. Of course, one of his sons also became Prime Minister (Pitt the Younger), who in 1789 was granted the Freedom of the Town of Seaford. By Kevin Gordon

Titans Storm Summit in Charity Fundraising Bid Over 20 members of the newly opened Titans Gym (www.titanfitness.org) in Newhaven successfully climbed to the summit of Ben Nevis on Saturday 15th June. The mountain, which stands some 4,409 ft above sea level, is located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains and is the highest point in the British Isles.
Be a School or College Governor
Do you have enthusiasm and time to commit? Do you work well with others? Become a School or College Governor and make a real contribution to improving the lives of young people. You don’t have to have an education background, as you will develop your knowledge through free training, briefings and support. For further information: Email: Len.Parkyn@st-johns.co.uk
The adventure was the culmination of over four months of hard training in the newly formed gym as directed by head coach and former national power lifting champion, Mandy Dean. Mrs Dean was quoted as saying ‘…7.5 gruelling hours to the summit and back with a truly amazing group of people, made some amazing memories, encouraging and laughing at each other all the way.’ The Titan gym was formed by Mrs Dean following over 20 years of dedication to improving the fitness of the local community through a wide variety of exercise classes. The Titans’ exploits on the mountain were preceded by an invitational workout for the whole team on the Friday evening at Crossfit Ben Nevis in Fort William in accordance with the Crossfit Community spirit. The workout was a warm up for what lay ahead for some while others went full steam irrespective of what lay in wait first thing in the morning. Despite dreadful weather forecasts, the day for the summit attempt greeted us with bright sunshine and blue skies; however these perfect conditions presented their own set of unique challenges as the hot and sweaty initial phase of the climb gave way to strong chilly winds, rain, hail and deep snow at the summit. Special mention must be saved for Ameila Lily Kingshott who raised over £350 for the local charity Haydn’s Wish in memory of local boy Haydn Wileman who tragically passed away in 2011 and which supports ongoing research into allergies amongst children, and also Jordan Fox who, inspired by his Nan’s battle with the disease and close friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, raised over £600 for Cancer Research UK. And this is the very embodiment of what the Titan ethos is with The Titan Gym is formed on the basic
principles of inclusion, honesty, hard work, strength in numbers and tailored workouts. What this means is that no matter what your current fitness level is, if you have a ‘have a go’ attitude then you will find all the support and encouragement you will ever need to achieve whatever goal you have from your fellow Titans. One member of the Titan family was quoted as saying ‘..the weekend marks a massive turning point in my life. To many of you it may seem like I’ve just climbed a big hill but it’s genuinely had a massive effect on me physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s time to start living my life properly…’ All in all a great weekend was had by all where adventures were had, new friends were made and a band of brothers (and sisters) achieved something that just a few months ago none of them thought even remotely possible. While the legs recover their soreness, the plans for the next adventure are already well under way. If you are interested in rising to the challenge and getting involved at Titans Gym then contact Mandy on 07505 819886, email: train@titanfitness.org or pop in and say hello at Unit 22, Beach Close, Newhaven, BN9 0BY (opp. Newhaven Harbour Railway station and ferry terminal) or visit www.titanfitness.org or search for Titan Fitness on Facebook.

New Bins on Seaford Seafront In response to comments from residents and visitors, new multi-use bins are to be installed on Seaford Seafront in the next few weeks, making it easier for people to dispose of their litter and dog waste in one place without having to walk to find a suitable bin. Seaford Town Council has invested £10,000 in bins and is working in partnership with Lewes District Council in enhancing the facilities on the seafront. The bins will be emptied on a daily basis.

Ian White, Leader of Seaford Town Council, said “we are making this investment in order to improve the look of Seaford Seafront which was one of the key aims identified by the Council as being important to residents and visitors alike. This is just the start of the changes we would like to see over the next few years.” The importance of responsible disposal of dog waste is a key focus of the scheme and people are asked to ensure that they dispose of their dog waste in a suitable manner and where possible double bag the waste for safety. Seaford Town Council would also like to encourage the safe disposal of BBQs which can often result in fires if not extinguished correctly; fires caused by smouldering BBQs can then lead to secondary fires, putting the public in danger. Please be cautious when disposing of BBQs. which should never be left unattended whilst still hot and should be extinguished with water and left to cool if they are to be placed in a litter bin. For further information, please contact Seaford Town Council on 01323 894870 or email: admin@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk. Collaborative law – a kinder divorce? The word divorce can stir all manner of emotions and expectations. Commonly, most people will brace themselves for a courtroom battle, mudslinging, children being used as bargaining tools and absolutely no chance of remaining ‘friends’ with their former partner in the future. For many families the conflict never ends and everyone involved, particularly the children, find it extremely difficult to move on from it. But Collaborative Law is different.
open communication and undoubtedly ensures respect is maintained throughout the process and in the future. It also enables the couple to plan for their futures and those of their children. By far the biggest advantage to many is that the family is able to move forward in a far more amicable and respectful way. Good relationships are maintained and many couples have reported that being able to work through every aspect of their separation - both practical and emotional - has enabled them to feel positive about their futures.
So what is collaborative law?
What can it be used for?
Unlike the traditional adversarial process, each person appoints their own collaboratively trained lawyer and the couple and their respective lawyers all meet together to work things out face to face. Each party has their lawyer by their side throughout the whole process to provide support and legal advice. It requires commitment from the couple and their lawyers by signing an agreement that compels everyone to attempt to resolve the issues without involving the court.
The collaborative process can be used for many issues including: • Financial arrangements following relationship breakdown • Sorting out arrangements for the children • Civil Partnership disputes • Arranging Living Together Agreements • Arranging Pre-Marriage and Pre-Civil Partnership Agreements • Agreeing property ownership

Seaford Musical Theatre presents
THe Wiz REVIEW 5th - 8th June
Seaford Musical Theatre put on another successful show in June, ‘The Wiz’, a contemporary musical version of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz set to lively music - a mixture of rock, gospel and soul. The show opened with an energetic disco number setting the scene for Kansas and the arrival of Dorothy and Toto her dog. Creative sound and lighting effects whisk Dorothy (Shana Edwards) away in a tornado to Munchkinland where she meets Addaperle (Shar Turnbull), the good witch of the north and the Munchkins, who are all celebrating the demise of the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy is desperate to return home, and Addaperle suggests she seeks help from the ‘Great Man’ himself, the Wiz (John Walsh) who lives in the Emerald City. She must follow the yellow-brick road wearing the silver shoes with special powers that belonged to the Witch of the East. On the way she meets her travelling companions, the wobbly Scarecrow who is longing for some brains, excellently played by Sue James, the

uptight Tin Man (Ann Taylor) who is looking to find a heart and the cowardly Lion (Manda Bloxham) who would like to ask the Wiz for some courage - enthusiastic and convincing perfomances by all. Dancers from Seahaven Dance School gracefully set the scene for the Emerald City whilst the gate keeper (Katie Horsecraft) insists they must all wear green glasses before seeing the Wiz. The mightly Wiz turns out to be a very cool dude who agrees to grant them their wishes on condition that they can kill Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West. Jon Walsh must be congratulated on his entertaining, evangelical-styled Wiz. Inside the Emerald City in Act II, the travelling friends are captured by the menacing winged monkeys and taken to the Wicked Witch of the West, played by an amusing Sarah Eaton, who sits on her ‘toilet’ throne’. Accidentally Dorothy loses her cool and throws water over Evillene, which unexpectedly kills her! Confronted with their triumph, the Wiz reveals himself as a phoney and confesses that he was only ‘a two-bit con man from Omaha’ and that only through his ability to give everyone in town a pair of green sunglasses has he been recognized as the powerful Wiz. He manages to convince the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion that their wishes have been granted and that Dorothy can return home with him in his hot-air ballooon; however, more confusion entails and he leaves without Dorothy. The good witch of the North, Addaperle, reappears and tells Dorothy she must find Glinda, the Good Witch of the South and ask for her help to return home. On meeting Glinda (Julie Terry) Dorothy is told that she must click the heels of her silver slippers together three times to return home, which she does and here the show draws to a close. A challenging and ambitious show executed well under the direction of Sylvia Elder and the production team. Credit also goes to the director of music, Margaret Farmiloe and the orchestra, who kept the somewhat unfamiliar tunes skipping along throughout. Congratulations to everyone involved for another enjoyable production. Fran Tegg

Probus Club of Seaford I was kindly invited by the Probus Club of Seaford to attend one of their lunch meetings, held at the Seven Sisters Hotel, every second Tuesday of the month. Not knowing very much about Probus, I accepted and went along to find out more about the organization. The Probus Club of Seaford club started in 1969 and was the second Probus club to be formed. The first club was started in Caterham, where the Rotary Club there decided it would be a good idea to form a separate club for ‘retired’ professional and businessmen. In 1965 the first club was formed and Probus was born the name is taken from the first syllables of the words professional and business. Harold Blanchard was the first chairman of the Caterham club and on visiting his brother-in-law Leslie Crisp in Seaford, where a large number of retired businessmen lived, the second club, the Probus Club of Seaford, was started. Since then Probus has spread all over the world. The first Seaford club meeting was held at the Wellington Hotel under the presidency of J H E Biggs and has been popular ever since, so much so that a second club, Seaford Head Probus Club was formed in 1995. Unfortunately, in recent months, membership numbers have begun to decline; however the Probus Club of Seaford is now appealing for new members to join. There are currently over 50 members, made up of an

interesting mix of retired businessmen: a schoolmaster, a local government officer, ship’s master, a boat builder, a university zoologist, an artist, dental surgeon and many others. Smaller groups have also been formed within the club by members with similar interests, such as bowling and golf. At the monthly lunch meetings, guest speakers are invited and on this occasion, Bryan Turner, Chairman of St James’ Trust gave a very interesting talk on the trust and St James’ club house - what the club offers, the numerous activities that are held there, how the club relies on volunteers and charitable support along with a fascinating history of the club. As well as the monthly meetings, the wives and friends of Rotary members are invited to a summer dinner and winter lunch and also the various outings organised throughout the year - the club’s social secretary is currently organising tours at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne and a four-day holiday in Somerset. Sadly, Harold Blanchard and other founder members have passed away. However, as I discovered at this luncheon meeting, the traditions of Probus continue to provide an opportunity for retired men to socialise, enjoy good company, form friendships with others with similar interests and to be involved in interesting social activities. The Probus Club of Seaford meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Seven Sisters, Alfriston Road at 12 noon for 12.30pm lunch. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please telephone: 01323 894939 or 897546 Photos: Ladies’ Luncheon, December 2008 at the Hydro Hotel, Eastbourne and Probus on a visit to St Malo.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH DEPRESSION, SLEEP & THE DREAM STATE Far from feeling more refreshed after a night’s sleep, most people with depression wake up next day still exhausted and feeling totally unmotivated. It is hard for them to get out of bed and do anything at all. We now know why this happens. Psychologist and co-founder of the human givens approach Joe Griffin carried out research over many years which showed that, when we dream at night, we are discharging unexpressed emotional arousals from the previous day. If earlier we were upset about something our spouse did or didn’t do, but kept it to ourselves, we would later dream that out, perhaps in the form of getting angry with someone else (dream content is never straightforward); that would have the desired effect of lowering our levels of emotional arousal, so that we can start next day afresh, even though we are unlikely to remember we had the dream. (If we did express our feelings with our spouse at the time, we wouldn’t need to dream about it. And, of course, if we wake up and remember what our spouse did or didn’t do, we may get emotionally aroused about it all over again, requiring more dream discharge that night, if we still don’t resolve it.)
Too many dreams Research shows that depressed people dream much more than non-depressed people, distorting the balance between recuperative slow-wave sleep and energy-burning dream sleep. Clearly, because

they spend so much time worrying and imagining, they have far higher amounts of unexpressed arousal to discharge. With so much energy spent on all the excessive dreaming they have to do, they wake up exhausted and lacking in motivation It is necessary for people in depression to be helped to challenge their negative thoughts, imagine more realistic outcomes and futures and to find ways to put meaning and purpose back into their lives. This could be through exercise, team sports, doing something for other people, learning a new skill, calling up old friends, and so on. Very often, people who are depressed start to withdraw from their usual routines, stopping going out or phoning or seeing friends, and this makes them dwell on their misery even more. It is essential, therefore, that they are helped to start meeting their emotional needs again, in healthy and satisfying ways. If the depression is due to post-traumatic stress, it is also necessary to stop the traumatic memory from continuing to interfere with life in the present. The rewind technique, a simple, non-invasive method of detraumatisation that all human givens practitioners learn, can achieve this quickly. Dwelling on and digging up the past is dangerous. Neuropsychological research has shown that this has a physical effect on the brain, strengthening the neuronal connections with misery and negative thinking. We get better at piano or football with practice and, unfortunately, we get better at depression with practice too! So, it really is important to think to the future instead – to learn to shift unhelpful thinking patterns, take back control, find ways to bring meaning and purpose back into life and to look forward with hope. Next month the focus is on Addiction. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

Running Commentary... Weekly mileage, time on your feet and your running speed in minutes per mile or miles per hour are just a few examples of the maths that we use (if we want to) to measure our own improvement of strength and stamina. The comment – “I’ve been out three times this week,” in your first few months of taking up running can soon become “I’ve been running for three years now.” The dedicated runner who maintains a running diary may also know the moment he/she reaches a hundred or perhaps 1000 miles of running, or the event that marks their fiftieth 10km race, and you only have to have a passing interest in ‘milestones’ or be ambitious to reach certain targets to realise the extra enjoyment and positive effect that they can bring to your running. It is well known that many cricketers harbour the dream of hitting a century… As a tail-ender mine was always to reach double figures… but it was just as fulfilling when I achieved it!

100mph still holds an appeal for some bikers and although more people have reached the summit of Mount Everest than have completed 100 marathons, it is nevertheless a target that can inspire runners. Because of the ‘sense of achievement’ factor in marathon running, it is easy to amass ten or twenty marathons, and then the momentum created can soon push that number up to forty or fifty, by which time the thought of reaching 100 can become very strong. However, Ian Taylor, from Brighton, made his decision to attempt to do 100 after having done only 2 marathons, and remarkably, he achieved it in just 5 years. Mine took a more sedate 20 years to accomplish. I know of many runners who challenge themselves to reach a certain target and often achieve it over a favourite course. Such aims are not limited to just marathons of course, but can apply to any distance. And when runners reach the point in their running career when they no longer feel able to run a PB, setting yourself a target of completing 10, 50 or 100 races over a particular distance can be just as rewarding when it’s achieved. This month has plenty of races to choose from but my recommendation has to be The Alfriston Water Meadow Fun Runs, which are part of the Alfriston Festival Week. They take place on Saturday 24th August and are an ideal introduction to racing for beginners as well as being worthwhile for those who race regularly. There is a 1.5km run for young runners (lower age limit – 8 years) and a 5.2km (just over 3 miles) event for adults and youngsters who can handle longer distances. Starting and finishing on the Tye (by the Church) the 5.2km fun run goes along the river path and beyond Litlington Bridge to what on an OS map is called New Bridge, even though it looks pretty old. Here, the route crosses the river and heads back towards Alfriston. The 1.5km fun run goes north from the Alfriston Bridge and skirts one of the nearby fields before finishing back on the Tye. Race entries are on the day only, and the registration desk opens at 1.30pm for a 2pm start. Further details can be found on the advertising leaflets for the Festival Week that will drop through most letterboxes in early August. Next month’s Running Commentary will feature comments from Seaford Strider John Kingshott. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

GET INTO GOLF Friendship, fresh air and exercise golf has it all…
Golf is one of the best sports you can play to improve mental and physical wellbeing whatever your age, background or ability. Indeed, golf ’s powerful combination of stress-busting exercise, fresh air and camaraderie make it an excellent activity for promoting long-term heart health. Here’s how…
It’s better than a fast and furious gym session Playing a round of golf could be better for you than a quick, intense workout, according to new research from Maastricht University. Scientists looking into the healthiest ratios of activity and inactivity found that doing moderate activity for longer periods of time leads to more significant improvements in blood fats and insulin than an hour of intense exercise. Scientific proof that walking around the golf course for a few hours is healthier than a fast and furious session at the gym…

heart and lungs. Research shows that golf, combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can reduce your risk of heart disease, stress-related illness, stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol. Doctors recommend that we do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week and the average game of nine-holes will take you almost up to that quota. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never played golf or if you haven’t picked up a club since your school days or an almost-forgotten holiday. You can get started by taking advantage of the Academy Membership at Seaford Golf Club in Firle Road, Seaford. Look at our advert in Seaford Scene or telephone 01323 894160 for more details. You’ll receive an introduction to golf from PGA professionals, together with information about club membership and follow-on coaching opportunities. Equipment can be loaned so all you have to do is make an appointment and turn up on the day in comfortable clothing and footwear. The Get into Golf campaign, supported by Sport England and funded by the National Lottery, is now making the game more affordable and welcoming than ever before. www.getintogolf.org for more information.

Made a Resolution to LOSE WEIGHT? Make a resolution to keep it off too! Did you know that 80% of your result is dependent on the foods you are eating and only 20% the exercise ? Helen- one of our WLC winners says -” Initially I lacked energy, felt unhealthy, and lacked confidence, and was a size 22. I was also very sceptical about this programme. HOWEVER.. I found it easy, felt better almost immediately, wasn’t hungry, and my sleep improved. I love people saying—how good I look, slimmer/ healthier/ full of energy. And I’ve lost over 50lbs so far! I also joined the Free Walking group. It was easy to recommend this to my friends and neighbours—they have all had great results too and are really grateful to me. Sue has been brilliant—so supportive. It’s a fantastic experience !!

Beachy Head Ramble
Spectacular scenes from Beachy Head can be viewed at any time but when we rambled this summer and the weather was perfect, the scenery was breathtaking. The Disabled Ramblers took the path from Beachy Head to Birling Gap in their motorised scooters and had a memorable day. At the Belle Tout lighthouse the steep incline was optional; those that motored up found the climb really worthwhile. Visibility all day was perfect. We had help and co-operation from all the relevant landowners making our trip enjoyable and safe. It was both stimulating and plain fun to get out into the countryside with friends to explore this glorious stretch of coastline. Many of the ramblers came from London and all over the South East, and a good day was had by everyone. Sheila Matthews

RECOMMENDED IN THE GOOD CURRY GUIDE

SUSSEX ROAMABILITY AT Chichester Marina The members of Sussexroamability and friends took to the surrounds of Chichester Marina in sunshine and showers and enjoyed a delightful day in June.
It was a good ramble of about 7 miles. We enjoyed the spectacle of vessels of all varieties gently bouncing in reflected water. There was also plenty of birdlife around us to keep our attention too. Eight motor scooters made up our group with three walkers, all out to enjoy the day together. After a welcome lunch at the Spinnaker cafe, we rambled on to Birdham. This was an equally pleasant area with the luxuriant growth of trees and hedges in all varieties of green. Our tour ended and we returned to the car park at which point we all agreed we had had a very good day.
