THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE – SEAHAVEN BRANCH – CELEBRATES TRAFALGAR DAY Friday 21st October 2011, Trafalgar Day, saw members of the Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ join with friends from the Newhaven Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps and the Seaford Branch of The Royal Naval Association to dine together at the Seaford Head Golf Club. At the formal dinner, the toast to the ‘Immortal Memory of Lord Nelson and those who fell with him’ was given by the branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant. His address before the toast dwelt on the life of Lord Nelson up to his death on 21st October 1805 aboard his flagship HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The battle saw the end of French influence at sea, a fact that helped considerably in the final defeat of France. Bob Peedle MBE, Chairman, welcomed the guests and the reply was given by the Chair of Lewes District Council, Councillor Eileen Russell. Earlier guests and members had been welcomed by two sea cadets in their best rig, Cadet Petty Officer Robbie Willis and Leading Cadet Rosy McColloch. Amongst the guests supporting the event were Councillor Linda Wallraven, Mayor of Seaford and Councillor Steve Saunders, Mayor of Newhaven. Apologies and best wishes had been received from the Mayors of Peacehaven, Telscombe and Lewes. Rotary International was represented by Dr Peter Fenwick and Lieutenant Commander John Owen from the Seaford Rotary. A raffle and auction followed the formal part of the evening and it raised £200 towards the Society’s funds. A proportion of these funds will be used to buy items needed by local worthwhile projects.

The Branch of the Society, although only just under two years old, is thriving, and its next functions is a special Christmas Lunch at the Star in Alfriston in December. Plans are now underway for the branch’s monthly functions in 2012, which will include St George’s Day on 23rd April and the Queen’s Official Birthday in June at which Waterloo and D-Day will be remembered. Jon Anniss, HEAD TEACHER, Retires from Chyngton PRIMARY School On the 1st September 1992 a new head teacher took up his post at Chyngton Primary School, taking over from Mr Parkinson to become the third head teacher (Mr Lilley was the first, when Chyngton opened in 1958). On Friday December 16th he will retire, after nineteen successful years at the helm of a school that has grown considerably during his leadership. Jon Anniss took up the headship of Chyngton after working previously as the Head of West Rise Junior School in Eastbourne. Although secondary trained, it has been his passion for primary school teaching and developing and nurturing young children to become strong, successful individuals and learners that has been so key to his career. When he joined Chyngton it was one and a half form entry, with approximately 330 pupils educated in both the main building and an assortment of huts. In the nineteen years since the number on roll has grown to approximately 430 and the huts are a thing of the past; the first extension was completed in 1997 and the second in September 2010, after a long campaign by Jon and the school governors to get rid of the huts and ensure that all children were in first-rate classrooms. During his time at Chyngton he has overseen the total refurbishment of the swimming pool and school garden, the creation of an ICT suite and vastly improved, better equipped classrooms. Most importantly, he has striven to improve the quality of teaching for all its pupils and do all that he can to enable their time at Chyngton to be as successful, happy and productive as possible.

Jon has always been a head teacher who thoroughly enjoys teaching and time spent with the children, happiest when he can share their learning and fun with them, either when covering lessons or running clubs, such as swimming, football, cricket, guitar and speed stacks. Through his passion for sport he has involved numerous children in sport across Seaford with Chyngton children participating in the annual cross country, swimming galas, cricket and football tournaments, district sports and many other events, where he has encouraged children to try their hardest and to represent Chyngton to the best of their ability. He has improved standards of teaching, leading to better test results and urged children to embrace the core Chyngton values of: community, participation, respect, ambition, individuality, enthusiasm, opportunity, pride, creativity and achievement, by always modelling these values, and believed passionately in the Chyngton community, that once you have been part of, you are part of forever.

‘Chyngton School aspires to enable every child to reach the highest possible quality of personal fulfilment and achievement’ This is part of the Chyngton vision, created by Jon and lived by himself and his team. One of the proudest moments from the 2006 Ofsted (in which Chyngton was the first school in East Sussex to be given the top Ofsted grading of ‘outstanding’) was the comment by inspectors ‘at this school every child really does matter’. Whilst at Chyngton Jon has worked extensively for the Local Education Authority as a School Improvement Partner and Local Leader of Education, helping other schools to improve the standards of school leadership and is highly respected and valued for his work in this role. However, it is at Chyngton where he will be most missed, as a leader who has led by example, a head who genuinely delights in children’s personal, social and academic growth and as a man determined to support his staff and children to be the best that they can be. By Tracey Guest, Assistant Headteacher, who has worked with Jon since 1995.

NEW THEATRE GROUP WOWS AUDIENCES! The Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors shone in their first ever production – ‘Jessie’s Dream’ – performed at the Barn Theatre, Seaford at the end of October. The story revolved around a young girl researching the 1970s for a school project who falls asleep and wakes up in a retro classroom filled with warring punks and hippies. As reality brakes through the dream barrier – can Jessie bring harmony to both the music and her new classmates before she wakes up? With just 12 weeks to write, choreograph and stage the show with a cast of mainly first-time performers aged between 8-16, many lesser directors would have trembled but stage veteran Paula Woolven loved the challenge. Assisted by producer Shar Turnbull, Paula involved the children in the concept of the show, the design and making of the costumes and the choreography of the dances. “It really was THEIR show” Paula said “from the idea to the characters to the costumes and dancing – I just helped by putting the script together. It was colourful, energetic and extremely entertaining! The audience were up on their feet at every performance. I loved the fact that the children wanted to show how different society and music has become over the last forty years. With songs from Abba squaring off against Lady Gaga and Donny Osmond vs Bruno Mars, the music delighted every member of the audience of all generations.” A guest appearance from Spoony’s Street Dancers provided more ‘wow’ factor and dance teachers Jo Hatt and Seaford School of Dancing teacher Lindy Nash helped with choreography during rehearsals. The piano accompanist was the Young Mayor of Seaford young performer award-winner, Phil McMullen. The group was started in July this year with financial support from the Rotary Club of Seaford and the Police

Property Fund and is a not-for-profit volunteer-run community group meeting once a week. With disability access works being fully funded by the Keith Baker Charitable Trust and planned for spring 2012, the junior volunteers have been meeting with the local authorities and potential funders and service providers with a view to starting a musical theatre group for local disabled and special needs young people and hope to be able to move forward with the project once building works have finished. A replica of one of the first massive mobile phones, Lady Gaga’s outrageous lobster hats and a poster of the Bay City Rollers are now put away in the SMT Juniors props box and they are all looking forward to starting rehearsals for their next show “Carry On Up The Beanstalk”, a musical pantomime which will be staged in March 2012.

We are open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 4pm on Sunday. Prices are very affordable and start from £15 so there is something for everyone! Frazer Wilson: Born and raised in East Sussex, Frazer is an exciting artist who draws his inspiration from many sources particularly the Arctic wilderness of Iceland and freak weather conditions such as fog, severe storms and snow. He uses nature to feed his creative spark and sees his paintings as ‘snapshots of the meanderings of my imagination’ and his ‘re-interpretation of the temporary transformative power of nature’. Frazer is the featured artist for December at the Francis Perry Gallery in Eastbourne. His mixed-media paintings are highly evocative and in the view of Philip Perry, Artistic Director of the Francis Perry Gallery, Frazer ‘is an emerging talent to watch and certainly worth investing in now before the price of his work soars.’

The Sussex Art Collective in collaboration with Mohamed Hamid Star Brewery Pottery Christmas Show ‘Yuletide’ Thursday 1st Dec - Thursday 22nd Dec Tues to Sat 10.30am - 5pm, Sun & Mon 11am - 3pm.

Open Lewes Late Night Shopping. Thurs Dec 1st, 6 - 8pm Following on from the highly successful ‘Noel’ exhibition of 2010 The Sussex Arts Collective return to the Hop gallery to present this year’s Christmas Show ‘Yuletide!’ and marks yet another year of outstanding art exhibitions staged at the Hop gallery. This year the Collective join forces with the renowned Mohamed Hamid Star Brewery Pottery. The Sussex Arts Collective is an ever-expanding group of like-minded artists/craftspeople which was formed in 2006 by Phil Duncan to promote the work of members, build networks between local artists and provide goodquality exhibition spaces in commercial and open-house venues. ‘Yuletide!’ will feature many of Sussex’s best local artists and craftspeople as well as guests from a little further afield. In keeping with the policy adopted by the Collective this show sets out to represent the full range of art and craft disciplines from beautifully turned wood, jewellery, glass, textiles and ceramics, to fine-art painting, printing and photography. The work is always of the highest standard, yet instantly appealing and very affordable. Many of the artists taking part in ‘Yuletide!’ will be familiar to many as a number of them take part in various Open House exhibitions during the Brighton Art Festival, the Uckfield Art Trail and Lewes District Artwave Festival.

Seaford author launches debut novel ‘The Beatles generation’. Debut author, fuelled by nostalgia, reveals what happens when a group of school friends are reunited after nearly forty years apart. Surrey, England, 1967, and it’s the last day of secondary school for Colin Anscombe. Like any young man, Colin is full of questions: what will the future hold in store for him? How will he spend the long summer months? And most importantly of all, how can he reconcile his unrequited love for Katie Simmons, the girl he has spent a decade adoring from afar. It turns out that Colin will end up spending much of his summer trying to work up the courage to contrive

a chance meeting with Katie, in order to sweep her off her feet. But when Colin finally gets round to making his gallant move, Katie has changed beyond all recognition. Fast forward to 2003 and Colin Anscombe’s thoughts are once again drawn back to Katie and the relationship that never blossomed. Now in his early fifties, bitterly divorced but in a new and rewarding relationship, Colin’s dreams are haunted by stirring memories from the past. Inspired to reconnect with his old school friends in order to reminisce and to find out where their lives have taken them, Colin starts to research on social networking sites. Once back in touch with the people who were most important to him during his formative years at school, Colin’s recollections of the past become more vibrant and tangible. Will he be able to leave these events where they belong, confined to his own history? Or will the reunion have an even greater impact on his future? Alan Morton’s debut novel The Beatles Generation is a fond account of how the past can still hold tremendous power over our lives, even with the passage of time. The 1960s is unique in the way in which it evokes great sentimentality and affection amongst those who lived through it, especially the teenage generation who were so deeply entwined with what the decade represented: the music, the modernity, the fashion and the new-found sexual freedom. Together with his insightful exploration of male friendship, Morton produces an engaging social commentary of Britain over the past forty years, with special focus on the 1960s, highlighting the profound events which not only shaped his character’s lives but will be familiar to readers over fifty-five. About the Author: Alan Morton was born in Hampstead, London, in 1951 and with the exception of a three-year stay in New Zealand in the late 1980s, has lived in Sussex his entire adult life; he is currently based in Seaford. The Beatles Generation is his first book. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. All rights are reserved over the content and design of Seaford Scene unless agreed otherwise. Living at Cuckmere Haven Part 4 When we tell people we live at Cuckmere Haven, one of the most common responses is: ‘I’d love it in summer, but really wouldn’t fancy it in winter’. As the nights draw in earlier and the skies are damp and chill, living without mains electricity and heating certainly presents more challenges than it does throughout the summer months. When laying a fire or getting the range going, there are times when we imagine just flicking a switch and having warm radiators and a bathtub of hot water! But I often think about a time in not-so-distant history when everyone had to chop wood and light fires, and get the range going in the morning. Many of our older visitors recall childhoods framed by our new daily activities. I’m a real John Seymour aficionado (most well-known for his brilliant book on self-sufficient living) and recently picked up his book on forgotten household crafts at a second-hand stall. In his inimitable way, Seymour recalls bygone traditions and crafts with a kind of reverence, reminding us that sometimes the simple pleasures of a job well done cannot be underestimated. Whilst flicking a switch would be a lot easier when we’re tired and it’s getting dark, chopping the wood and building the fire reminds us where our heat comes from, and how lucky we are to have access to warmth and shelter. I always find that this time of year is about slowing down and enjoying home and hearth, appreciating the cycles of life. We are naturally more tired in the winter time as our bodies recharge and recuperate after the busyness of summer. For Robb and me, our lifestyle (and lack of light in the evening) literally forces us to rest more; drawing the chairs up to the fire and reading or chatting. One of the most amusing activities we’ve indulged in now it’s getting dark early is cooking by candlelight – we’ve made some totally haphazard bakes and crumbles… We tend to leave the washing up until the next morning when we can see properly, and I have often found that the potato peeler or spatula I was searching for in the dark the night before was there right under my nose! We hear regularly from Carolyn and Li Chen, now in China and full of wonderful stories of their adventures so far. Carolyn says one of the things she misses most about Cuckmere is the clear sea air. It’s true: when I have been away from Cuckmere for even a day, especially to visit my brother in London, I love taking in lungfuls of the invigorating freshness. Sea air has a long healing tradition, with people historically travelling many miles for its restorative properties. We feel pretty blessed that

36

we get to step out each day to our very own health spa! Robb made some delicious rosehip syrup with foraged rosehips and we’ve been having a dash of it with our porridge every morning. I call it my shot of Vitamin C, and so far both of us have managed to avoid all the colds and coughs that seem to be going around. Having recently attended a fantastic and inspirational foraging course, Robb has been sourcing a lot of ‘food for free’. We’ve been eating lots of nettles, which are versatile and packed with iron. They make a lovely addition to sauces, stews and soups, and can be cooked like spinach. Seaweed has been making its way into our diets too, and onto the vegetable beds to mulch down for next year’s growing. After the recent rains, mushrooms have sprung up everywhere and, playing it safe with the easily identifiable field mushrooms, we’ve had some great meals out of the harvest. From the garden, we’ve enjoyed the last of the tomatoes, which were still ripening in November. I love the celebrations and festivities at this time of year, our ancestors’ way of bringing a bit of light and warmth into the darkest months. And with Winter Solstice just around the corner on 21st December, we can now look forward to the days getting a little bit longer every day too. Wishing all Seaford Scene readers a very happy festive season, with lots of time for family, laughter, games and relaxation….and invigorating sea air! Lucy Corkhill Seaford Town Council has agreed to hold an annual charity open garden day in conjunction with local residents led by Geoff Stonebanks who has opened his award winning gardens ‘Driftwood’ at Bishopstone, Seaford for the last two years raising nearly six thousand pounds for charity. After donating an amazing £580 to the Mayor of Seaford’s chosen charity, WAVES family support service, in August this year, Geoff decided to approach the Town Council with his ideas for a Seaford wide charity open garden day. The first event will take place on Sunday 8th July 2012 – want to take part? For more information, please contact Geoff Stonebanks on 01323 899296 or Seaford Town Council on 01323 894870. ON BLATCHINGTON HILL: HISTORY OF A DOWNLAND VILLAGE A major new book about East Blatchington, a part of Seaford that was once a Downland village in its own right. This new full-length book by local author Rodney Castleden tells, for the first time, the compelling story of the village of East Blatchington and its struggle for survival. Often thought of as just another district of Seaford, Blatchington has its own highly individual history. People were living here 2,000 years ago, when the site of St Peter’s church was already a focus for burial. In the Middle Ages, its lords of the manor ran one of the most ambitious and productive types of agriculture in the country, a highly organized sheep-and-corn system. Blatchington was by no means the forgotten backwater we might have expected, but a busy place full of activity – and on a main road. The coach road ran up Blatchington Hill and Firle Road, then (at Beacon Lodge) across to Bishopstone along a line still followed by footpaths passing Costcutters, crossing Grand Avenue and continuing as the Wall Walk towards Bishopstone village. Then the road went up over Rookery Hill to reach Denton and Newhaven. It must have been an uncomfortable bumpy ride! The Star House in Homefield Road was once the village pub. Although tradition has it that it was a coaching inn, it probably wasn’t. The stage-coach service ran from two pubs in Seaford (the New Inn and the Pelham Arms), and the coaches probably clattered through Blatchington without stopping; they would not have needed to change horses there. There was a dark side to Blatchington’s past. Farming depended on child labour; there was disorder in church; at least one villager joined the Jack Cade Rebellion; the village was nearly wiped out by the Black Death; murder was committed on the village street. In the s16th century, the French landed and set fire to several cottages. Village life was far from the peaceful idyll we like to imagine. Even the cottages must have been crowded and noisy. Glebe Cottage, now home to Frank and Susan Drader, was in the mid-19th century the home of William and Elizabeth Reed – and their twelve children. Among the many people who lived here over the centuries were one of Nelson’s admirals, a best-selling Edwardian writer about the sea, and a distinguished marine artist. Two sailor-brothers Charles and William Fisher who were

brought up at Blatchington Court, the manor house, served on different ships in the Battle of Jutland in 1916; one survived and became an admiral, the other, aboard HMS Invincible, was killed when his ship blew up and sank. The book draws on a huge variety of sources to tell this panoramic and colourful story, including manor court books, old newspapers, maps and photographs. It even uses the title deeds of village houses to unravel the extraordinary career of the last squire, Robert Lambe. On Blatchington Hill tells the story of the village right up to the present day, including its struggle to keep its identity as Seaford grows right round it. On Blatchington Hill is on sale at Seaford Museum at £12.95. Also available from www.lulu.com, or direct from Rodney Castleden at Rookery Cottage, Blatchington Hill, Seaford: free delivery by hand by arrangement – just drop a note through the letterbox.

Volunteer with the Home Library Service Did you know that if you are housebound or a carer you can get library books and audiobooks delivered free at home? BESPOKE HAIRSTYLING IN SEAFORD By Emily Webster Your local independent stylist “I believe that your HAIR is something worthy of investing in. After all it is the ultimate accessory, all of us have to wear every day!” After 12 years in the business, my passion for creating beautiful hair still remains. I have gained invaluable skills and knowledge from some industry greats in my career so far, enabling me to be involved in various creative, photographic projects and enter some prestigious competitions. After having worked in a variety of salons, I feel I have gained a genuine insight in to what my clients really want from a visit to their hairdresser. When you make an appointment with me I make sure I give you the personal one to one service you and your hair deserve. First and foremost I will spend time listening to your needs, then together we’ll discuss which hairstyles will be most suitable for your face shape, hair type, skin tone and life style so the hairstyle you choose is bespoke to you. And lastly, before you leave I will aim to show you how to maintain your new fabulous style at home.

BEFORE

AFTER

“Not only did Emily listen to me, she also gave me her honest opinion of what she felt would suit me the most. Better than a face lift! It’s great to know I don’t have to travel miles to experience such professionalism.”

Receive a complimentary conditioning treatment with your first cut and blow dry.

VOUCHERS * GIFT AVAILABLE * “It never ceases to amaze me how much a change of hair colour can bring a person to life and often knock a few years off their age.” SEASONAL CHANGES I RECOMMEND Warm up your cool complexion by adding some stunning rich autumnal tones to your hair. Brighten your dull complexion by adding some striking, cool wintery tones to your hair.

Are You Being Served? It is now hard to believe that nearly 40 years have passed since this popular British sitcom first appeared on our TV screens. Despite that Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD) are convinced its following has never diminished and for that reason, they are proud to announce for their January 2012 seasonal production, and the first time in this area, the very funny stage adaptation of the show by its original creators, Jeremy Lloyd & David Croft.

SHORTCUTS BARBER SHOP Quality, Modern and Traditional Hairstyling for Men & Boys

Double innuendos are non-stop as the well-loved staff at Grace Brothers department store prepare first for a sale of German goods by showing their dexterity in Bavarian dancing, donning lederhosen. They then depart en masse for a staff holiday at a one-star hotel in Spain. Will the tropical heat, Spanish crumpet, giant woof 'n' poofs and randy revolutionaries prove too much for our happy band? Not a bit of it! With the aid of a nun's habit, a bowler hat and Mrs Slocombe's Union Jack knickers they survive their holiday with everything intact but their modesty.

This picture shows Thomas PelhamHolles (1693-1768) the first Duke of Newcastle on the left. He was the driving force behind local politics for many years. He regularly stayed at Bishopstone Place, one of his many houses across the country. He also owned Claremont, a large house in Surrey (now run by the National Trust) which is where Claremont Road gets its name from. The man on the right is his brother-in-law Henry Clinton, the 7th Earl of Lincoln. (1684-1728) He married Pelham’s sister Lucy in 1717. Clinton Place is named after him. ACCESS REPAIRS REPAIRS TO:

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

WASHING MACHINES

Two of the items in Seaford Choral Society’s Concert at St. Leonard’s Church, Church Street, Seaford at 7.30pm on Saturday 3 December are works by composers who were contemporaries but whose careers followed very different paths.

DISHWASHERS ELECTRIC COOKERS

Puccini composed his Messa di Gloria while a student at his local music institute in Lucca, Tuscany, but did not follow in many family footsteps as a church organist and after moving on to the Milan Conservatory set his course for Giacomo Puccini opera and never looked back. The piece, demonstrating his early mastery of the form, is full of drama, with glorious arias for the soloists, and early signals of future operatic greatness. It disappeared and was only rediscovered in 1951, since when it has become an established favorite. Stanford’s Songs of the Fleet, dating from 1910 and reminding us of our great naval heritage, present the words of Henry Newbolt wondrously set to music with a great range of tempo and mood by a master of choral composition whose symphonic and chamber music is also increasingly explored and admired today. He held professorships at the Royal College of Music and Cambridge University and the musical world is indebted to him as teacher of such luminaries as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Ireland and Herbert Howells and many more. The concert programme also includes those great vocal favorites, Adolphe Adam’s O Holy Night, the famous duet from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers, and Stephen Adams’ The Holy City and the audience have their chance to sing with a carol to end the evening. The soloists will be Stephen Charlesworth (Baritone) and Gary Marriott (Tenor), both re-visiting Seaford. Musical Director Sion Parry conducts and, in a most welcome first appearance with the Society, that master of the keyboard Nick Houghton will accompany at the organ. The retiring collection at the end of the concert will be in aid of The Mayor’s Charity, Waves – supporting families in Seaford. Tickets at £9 (including programme) may still be available from Seaford Tourist Information Centre and Newberry Estate Agents or from (01323) 894954.

SUSSEX ROAMABILITY: Autumn Colours at Tilgate Park For our last ramble of the season we chose to go to Tilgate Park near Crawley. Here there are stunning lakes, lawns and gardens and miles of woodland. The park is home to some of the oldest and highest trees of their kind and they made a magnificent display with their changing colours. We enjoyed different animals in the wildlife centre including farmyard animals and were entertained by some very pretty chickens. There is an extensive craft area, and children's play zone, so there is something for everyone. The disability facilities here are excellent with broad, smooth paths throughout. The café has an outside covered area, good for all weathers. Amazingly, entrance to this park is free. If you would like to get out and about, you would be very welcome to join us on our outings. HELPING LOCAL FAMILIES There is a new Seaford-based company whose primary objective is to help young families, also helping parents back into work. We all know how elusive the perfect work-life balance is. For the parents of young children this is particularly difficult to achieve. Chores and More owner and manager Kathy Hobson explains: “I aim to help local young families in 2 ways. Firstly, I know from my own experience that juggling the demands of children, partner, work, home, friends, etc. is trickier than any circus act! Imagine being able to take all of your domestic chores out of the equation, let Chores and More do your cleaning, ironing, shopping, admin. – whatever you want. Life would become less stressful and would free up more time for you, giving you the opportunity to return to work after having kids or simply enjoy your evenings and weekends with family and friends, or even just create some well deserved ‘me time’.”

“I also employ local parents who have up to 12 hours a week to spare. The hours are flexible and can fit around school or childcare, unlike most conventional jobs. Parents can have many valuable skills that can be incorporated into the services that Chores and More can offer.” Kathy concludes “My vision is to create a kind of local network of parents, employing some to help others. It’s a case of matching supply and demand, a win-win situation.” Chores and More was formed in May 2011 and has already established itself as a reliable and quality service provider with many satisfied clients. How nice to see a new local company with such positive ambition and potential.

Do you have too much to do and not enough time? Let us help you! Let us do your cleaning, ironing, shopping, admin, etc. (see website for more details). Just £12 an hour, flexible, pay as you go, one-off or regular use.

INTRODUCTORY OFFER FIRST MONTH HALF PRICE, JUST £6 PER HOUR!* www.choresandmore.co.uk Kathy Hobson: 07761 084330 kathy@choresandmore.co.uk *For the first 2 hours of each week of the introductory offer. To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

Gardening News

SEAFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

December can often be a dark, gloomy month with very cold spells. There may be only a few days or weekends when useful time can be spent in the garden so try some indoor or armchair gardening instead. Sit down and plan for possible changes to your garden next year. All the seed catalogues are out now and these are full of inspiration for your garden or allotment. Why not try something different, something you’ve never tried before? Every year brings new seed varieties for you to try. If you do get a fine day then check what needs doing outdoors. If nothing else it will take your mind off Christmas for a few hours! Mick Brown, our Society President, pens the following message: After many years of growing and showing Dahlias at shows across the county and nationally I have decided to ‘call it a day’. However, if anyone would like to learn the basics of growing these lovely flowers I will be very happy to guide them through their first year. I hope they will get as much pleasure from growing Dahlias as I have. For further information please phone Mick on 01323 893431. Finally I would like to wish all readers a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Mike Parker (Chairman).

GARDENING QUIZ 1 2 3 4 5

What are the four herbs mentioned in the popular traditional song ‘Scarborough Fair’ What is the colour of the ‘Rose of Yorkshire’? What is the colour of the ‘Rose of Lancashire’? What would you be doing if you were to be seen ‘damping down in the greenhouse’? Beardless, Bearded and Crested are all types of which border perennial revered for its stunning flowers? Answers page 75.

MEMBERS’ NOTICES: There are no social events during December. Your new Schedule and Programme for 2012 should be delivered to you in early January. This will include details of all social events, outings and ‘shows’ for next year. The ‘Collectors’ will also collect your subscription for 2012. ‘Thank you’ to all members, sponsors and local businesses that have supported our Society during 2011. Society History Part 11 Into the new Millennium! In 2000 the Society’s Millennium Project (Seaford’s new Cemetery Garden) was well under way. Two wooden bench seats and a boundary knee rail were now in place. It was decided to leave the main planting of trees, shrubs, bulbs and plants until the autumn as the summer had become too dry and warm. Planting resumed in October when Paradise Park offered us a special discount of 30% on all tree and plants. In 2001 our President Bill Webber was admitted to hospital and all members were shocked by his sudden subsequent death. Bill had been a great inspiration to many up and coming gardeners in Seaford. At the end of the year Harry Dollin was elected as our new president. Unfortunately, after a little while Harry had to vacate the post due to ill health and in 2003 Peter Earl became our new president. In 2005 we received a letter from the RHS advising that they were in the process of erecting a new Bicentenary Glasshouse at Wisley. Our committee agreed to donate the sum of £200 to the RHS appeal. In return the Society had its name engraved on the special glass panel which was displayed at the entrance to the new glasshouse. It is still there to this day. And so the Society moved into the new millennium. Many changes followed but we are still proud to say that our Seaford Society is still very active after over 100 years of history. The end…..for now! Mike Parker, chairman.

Seaford Gardening Club Well, the clocks have gone back, Halloween and Bonfire Night are now behind us and we look forward to Christmas and all the festivities and fun that go with it. Hopefully our gardens are tidied up and ready for the long winter sleep. We know things are stirring under the earth, like the spring bulbs that are getting ready to give us a colourful show once the cold, icy weather is over.

Our November speaker, Miss Glenda Law, gave a very interesting talk on the ‘Wildlife of Northumberland”. We all think of the area as an industrial area with mill towns but Glenda showed us the wild open spaces of heathland, covered in purple heather and other flowers. We started on the east coast, taking in Newcastle and it’s six bridges - road, rail, swing and the attractive millennium twin construction (that does not wobble!) - that cross the river Tyne. We saw a slide of the historic tenement building used by a colony of Kittiwakes that nest there, which looked very overcrowded to say the least! Some of the birds had been ringed and have been returning for 25 years and more. We were shown slides of hills that were more like mountains. It’s a botanist’s haven with the many varieties of wild flowers such as parsley, fern, foxglove, wood sage and heather. There is an abundance of rabbits and birds, with swans that have come from abroad to nest

here. The county has more castles than any other, along with the famous wild white cattle at Chillingham, which are known to be aggressive and unapproachable. We then went to Bamborough to see its enormous castle, pretty little town and the story of its famous resident Grace Starling. She worked with the lifeboat men and helped rescue many people from the sea. There is a museum dedicated to her life in the town. Sadly she died in her midsixties from tuberculosis. Film crews love the area and it is photographed during all seasons and weather conditions in the year. Lindisfarne (or the Holy Island as it is generally known) is also one of the beauties of this coastline and can only be reached at low tide over the causeway. It is a major sheep-rearing island. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening with Glenda and her photographic expertise and sense of humour. We shall certainly be asking her back again some day. We hold our Christmas meal as the December meeting so our next talk will be in January 2012, details of which will be in the January issue of Seaford Scene, plus a report on the meal at Avondale. May all members of the club wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2012. More information on the club can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331, or by visiting www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

Give a gift of life this Christmas

Pawsom e P ets o f S eafo rd l 50 years dog ownership l Licensed by Lewes District Council l Fully Insured l Accredited Dog Trainer with ADTB

Raffle tickets for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance’s 2011 Christmas Draw have gone on sale with one lucky winner guaranteed to win the top prize of £5,000. The draw will take place just three days before Christmas (December 22nd) with the runner-up receiving a second prize of £500. Last year, the life-saving charity’s draw achieved ticket sales and donations totalling £176,414. Each flying mission costs around £2,500 so the sum raised was enough to help fund more than 70 life-saving missions. Lottery Team Leader Katie Underdown said: “It’s due to the incredible generosity of our supporters that we are able to provide this essential service to everyone living, working and travelling in our county every day. “Our raffles are a major part of our annual fundraising plan which helps to raise the £5 million needed each year to fund the service.” Former Royal Navy servant Gladys Yates, from Gillingham, was delighted to win last year’s jackpot after buying £20 worth of tickets. She said: “It was a wonderful surprise and I had a lot of people say to me that it was so lovely to know someone who had won. “It’s only £1 a ticket and even if you don’t win it goes a long, long way to help. So many services are disappearing these days but we’ve got to keep the Air Ambulance flying. It’s a gem.” Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance flies with a specialist doctor and critical care paramedic who can carry out advanced medical procedures, giving patients the best chance and quality of survival. The emergency service relies almost entirely on public donations and receives no National Lottery funding. Tickets for the Christmas Draw cost £1 each in books of 10 and can be ordered by calling 01622 833833.

CYCLE SEAHAVEN In January 2009, 35 similar-minded people met, formed a committee and started a club for cyclists in the Seaford and the surrounding towns. Approaching its 3rd birthday, Cycle Seahaven has nearly 200 members. Its aim of getting people of all ages, abilities and cycling interests into cycling remains unchanged. The club organises rides for MTB (mountain bikes) and road riders throughout the week. The rides are led by a designated rider who will have posted their ride details on the Cycle Seahaven website. Each ride is given a grading along with a brief description of the ride’s route, anticipated duration and starting place. The rides are graded from 1 to 5. The shorter, slowerpaced level 1 rides are geared for the novice riders while the level 5 rides are for experienced riders. There’s also a letter grading with each ride which denotes the anticipated terrain. Checking the rides hotline is useful for late ride changes and cancellation notifications. In addition, the club promotes safe cycling and is working with the Forestry Commission, South Downs National Parks Authority, Sustrans, The National Trust, county and local district councils, the police and other cycling groups to make cycling safer and more accessible on the local roads and surrounding countryside. Key campaigns for the club are:

DEALING WITH CUSTODY OVER CHRISTMAS Christmas can be stressful at the best of times but it tends to be particularly hard on recently separated families. Negotiations over children are often fraught with tension. There are no hard and fast rules, but after mediating discussions with lots of families here is my advice for reaching an agreement without having to involve the courts: 1. Plan ahead - at least a month in advance. Time is needed to negotiate and reach a compromise. You will also have the option of enlisting outside help from a mediator, friend or a lawyer if it’s needed. 2. Communicate. Separated partners can naturally find speaking to each other difficult, but there will always be a need for parents to converse at some level.

90

3. Listen to the children. Ask them their opinions and give them the opportunity to be honest without fear of upsetting anyone. 4. Remember the details. Specific times, dates and venues, collection and pick up etc. are important. Draw up a schedule to prevent disputes once you’ve agreed everything. 5. Encourage, cooperate and be flexible. The ultimate goal should be for each child to have a special time with both their parents and their extended families. Focusing on this aim can help everyone have a good Christmas. Seaford KURLERS Goodness me, nearly the festive season again. How about getting active before Christmas, then you can enjoy the festival food without the guilt trip? New Age Kurling is a fun way to exercise and meet new friends and discover a new social circle. Every Tuesday at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford, the Seaford Kurlers meet to enjoy a game of New Age Kurling. Never heard of it? Like the curling on ice, same idea, but on a badminton court. The beauty of the game is that it can be enjoyed on equal terms by able- bodied people and those with a disability. Apart from the sporting side of our club, we have an active social side. We have a break at half time but we also enjoy days out to places of interest and we also have matches with other clubs and take part in national competitions. We have been on many outings during the past year. The coaches that we use are hired from ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). This means that we are able to accommodate people with wheelchairs. Our last social event was our annual Christmas lunch at the Drove restaurant, in Newhaven, which was superb. In the New Year we will have a visit to the Brighton Ice Show. For more details, contact Mrs June Wood, 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford, BN25 3JS. Tel. 01323 895376.

Running Commentary... Running has an enormously wide appeal, probably because it is a natural, instinctive thing to do. In my marathon book – Living Makes You Run Longer, Julia Armstrong of Brighton & Hove A C, made an inspiring contribution, opening with the sentence – “The moment I could walk… I ran, and I’ve been running ever since.” Once, it was normal for children to want to run around all day but as a teacher of over 40 years, I have seen a gradual deterioration in interest in exercise, and the consequential drop in general fitness of youngsters, so I am particularly pleased to see the enthusiasm of those who are strong-willed enough and brave enough, to kick this trend, and run for enjoyment as well as fitness. Harry Strong is one such young athlete, and writes, “I have been running with the Striders for several years and have made many new friends. Running regularly has improved my overall fitness and that has benefited the other sports that I take part in. I also enjoy running with the seniors at the Club because they give me helpful advice and cheer me on when I enter races. I’m competitive when it comes to events and try to put myself in a position to win races or at least to set a PB for the course.” “I am inspired by International athlete, Mo Farah, because of his real commitment to running. He has made a lot of sacrifices to achieve his world titles, including living

apart from his family while training in Africa and America to improve his speed and stamina. I also enjoy watching ordinary people running, both at races that I go to and those on TV, such as the competitors in the Great North Run and the London Marathon. When running long distances I need to stay focussed in order to run well. This is good for my concentration and that helps me at school. Teachers often talk to me about my running and this encourages me to go to events with the school. Running gives me confidence but above all, I just like to run, and hope to develop into a seriously good runner when I’m older.” Fortunately, Harry is not alone in enjoying running. Many people are discovering that running is OK. It’s cool, fun and rewarding. It stretches you, empowers you and enriches your life, and you can run as fast as you like or just cruise along slowly. The main running event taking place this month is the Mince pie 10-miler in Peacehaven (from the Meridian Centre) on the 11th. Anyone who is in training for a spring marathon would probably find this race ideal as part of their preparation but it is also suitable for non-marathon runners too. If interested, check out the Sussex Races website for further details. The charity to benefit from it this year is Seaford Down’s Syndrome & Special Needs Support Group. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

Is another diet going to make you fatter? The simple answer to this question is yes. If you put yourself on a diet then you have already decided that at some point you will come off it. You will go back to your old eating habits and the weight will pile back on and it is likely to be more than you started with before your diet. There are hundreds of different diets on the market, thousands of diet books and numerous diet clubs and they are making millions of pounds out of you. Yes! I say you because if you are reading this I expect you have been on one of these fad diets, and I assume that you are still looking for an answer to your weight issues. In our society today we have more information than ever before about what is best for our body; the best food to eat and the best diet we should have. So why is it that we are getting fatter and more unhealthy with each passing year? The food industry has a lot to answer for as manufacturers are pumping out processed foods full of chemicals, fat, sugar and salt that affect our brain chemistry, with the goal of addicting us to their unhealthy additive-ridden muck. Drug dealers get prison sentences, while these people get heavy pay rises and pensions! They bombard us with advertising that verges on deception and they make us believe that their product will produce a supermodel. Nothing can be further from the truth. They can make their latest offering look sexy and appetising and give it an irresistible name and of course you go out and buy it in the hope that their promises are true and the circle of failure begins once more. When was the last time you saw a £million sexy advertising campaign for a cabbage or a carrot? Never! So what is the answer? Take control of your own future right now and start eating foods that you know in your heart are healthy and will make you feel great. Now I know you are sitting down reading this right now, but as soon as you have finished, I have another magic pill for you, GET UP AND MOVE. Yes it’s as simple as that and if you do this every day of your life you will be more energised and healthy, more able to maintain a healthy body weight and feel great.

your habits and start your journey towards a healthier life. The best part is that you don’t have to do this alone as there is a new answer right on your doorstep and it’s completely free. A weight-loss club that is totally free every week where you can have your weight monitored, get free advice on healthy eating and exercise, help with motivation, recipe ideas and much more. This is all brought to you by fully qualified health and fitness professionals who will give you quality impartial advice, who will not sell you any processed shakes or bars, and who will not encourage you to buy cardboard-box processed meals. In fact the only thing we will do, is ask you to do a couple of hours of quality exercise each week in our classes to help you on your way to a fitter healthier body. We have a range of classes available to suit all shapes, sizes and abilities and you can join any class completely free from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th January 2012. Our first Weight Loss Club class is on Wednesday 11th January at 6.30pm at Claremont Hall, Claremont Road, Seaford, and we look forward to seeing you there. SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB At a recent meeting of Seaford Martello Rotary Club held at Seaford Golf Club, President Reg Dove presented a cheque for £500 to Lesley Wetlesen from the charity WAVES.

Lesley spoke to the club about the work they are doing in the town to support families. They also provide counselling and run parenting workshops. Funding for this vital work is very hard to find and they always need more volunteers! President Reg said “During my year we are pinpointing local charities with a particular purpose of supporting families and children. Waves fulfils both of these objectives and I am delighted to make this donation on behalf of Seaford Martello Rotary Club.”

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.
