So much to Enjoy in Sussex in 2012 2012 is set to be an epic year and where better to celebrate than the Sussex countryside - one of the most beautiful parts of Britain - with the help of the new Enjoy Sussex Visitor Accommodation and Attraction Guide. The 2012 Enjoy Sussex Visitor Guide is essential to the celebrations, not just during the busy summer of Diamond Jubilee and Olympic events but all the year round. It provides detailed information on the attractions and towns in the area and the redesigned website www.enjoysussex.info offers information about latest events as well as online booking for a range of quality accommodation. "With the eyes of the world focused on Britain this year the Enjoy Sussex Partnership will be working to promote our region as the ideal destination to visit during 2012. The Enjoy Sussex Visitor Guide and website will encourage visitors to discover our picturesque countryside and coast, which is just a short

The free 2012 Enjoy Sussex Guide is produced in partnership by Lewes, Horsham, Mid-Sussex and Wealden District Councils, working together to promote sustainable tourism within an area stretching west from Pulborough to Burwash in the east, and north from the Ashdown Forest to Cuckmere Haven in the south. www.enjoysuss

The Enjoy Sussex area includes the South Downs National Park, the Seven Sisters Cliffs and the Ashdown Forest. Its landscape is quintessentially English and its market towns including Lewes, Uckfield and Horsham, are steeped in history. It makes the Enjoy Sussex area the perfect destination for a day trip, relaxing short break or a longer holiday. Potential visitors to Seaford, Newhaven, Crowborough, Hailsham, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Henfield, Billinghshurst and Pulborough will find the guide and website invaluable - as will local tourist attractions and accommodation providers. Tourism is a keystone of the local economy and one of the main employers in the Enjoy Sussex area. Visitors come from all over the world, although many also come from much closer to home to enjoy the many attractions whilst visiting friends and relatives. The 2012 Enjoy Sussex Guide and website are just two of the ways in which the four local authorities work together to ensure that new and repeat visitors continue to visit the area, bringing in vital revenue and supporting local jobs. From the beginning of January, copies of the brochure will be available free of charge from Enjoy Sussex Tourism by calling Tel: 01271 336173. Plans to revive Seaford Games Tourney Seaford Community Partnership’s plans to hold a ten-day sports and games festival in 2013 received strong support from a well-attended meeting of the Partnership last Wednesday. Attending at the invitation of Keith Blackburn, Chair of the Partnership, representatives from most of the sporting and voluntary organisations in the town and Seaford Town Council enthusiastically welcomed the suggestion and put forward concrete and innovative ways in which their activity or organisation could be involved. The aim which crystallised out of the discussions would be to hold the festival over two weekends in May 2013, possibly Sat 18th to Bank Holiday Monday 27th in a variety of venues around the town. It would provide everything from taster sessions to participant activities to team competitions. The festival would aim to be as inclusive as possible and involve schools, seniors, novices and skilled, the fit, the not so fit and those with disabilities. While many of the activities would be based at the Salts such as tag rugby, net cricket, skateboarding and tennis, others would take place on the sea: kayaking, sailing, wind and kite surfing, while rambling, health walks, Nordic walking and cycling would go out from the town into the surrounding countryside. Wave Leisure could use the Downs halls and pitches, while Seaford Head Pool and Sports Hall could also provide venues for appropriate activities. The next meeting of the Partnership on April 4th at 5.30pm at Seaford Baptist Church will consider more detailed plans and set up a management group for the festival. Any organisations or clubs interested who did not manage to get to last week’s meeting are asked to contact Keith Blackburn beforehand (keithrblackburn@ live.co.uk).

Seaford Games Tourney was originally started by Seaford Urban District Council in the 1960s and included tennis, bowls, golf and athletics with valuable prizes and entries from all over England in some events. It survived local government re-organisation but appears to have fizzled out in the eighties. The Partnership aims to put sport and healthy living back in the forefront of Seaford life.

At last a Coach Holiday Company especially for Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven
After living in the area and working for local coach companies for over 20 years, the one thing I’ve heard time and time again is ‘we’re fed up of spending ages running around the countryside on feeder coaches before we even start on our journey!’ So! I thought it time to branch out on my own and start looking after local people, giving them day trips and holidays that start from the moment they get on the coach. With extensive experience travelling the length and breadth of the UK and Europe, I know that coach passengers would like their day trip or holiday, to be just as it would be as if they were travelling on their own. My trips offer passengers the satisfaction of knowing that as soon as they get on the coach they can sit back, relax, safe in the knowledge that all the planning and organising is being done by someone else. I believe lots of elements make up a memorable holiday. A comfortable coach with a courier looking after you, a relaxing hotel in a town (or in the country) and extremely good food are very important, as well as interesting places to visit. Putting all these together are what it takes to make it a holiday to remember. Over the years I have had the great pleasure of having strangers get on the coach who get off as friends. Many have travelled with me many many times and to some fantastic destinations all over Europe, returning with some amazing memories. For me the best part of the job is meeting so many interesting people, taking them away (and if they’re lucky bringing them back!) and have them say what a great holiday they’ve had. I’m lucky to have the help and support of a family run local coach company, who are giving me the full use of their well maintained luxury coaches. We will be using their 32-seat diner coach for all our tours, providing that extra comfort and service on the journeys. I intend to continue giving my existing passengers the very best holidays. I am looking forward to meeting new passengers, going to new and exciting destinations and continuing to have fantastic job satisfaction. If you would like to join us, be part of the new coaching experience, enjoy interesting days out and great holidays, please give us a call, we would love to send you details of what we have planned for the future. A New Coach Holiday and Day Trip Company Specifically For
Seaford, Newhaven & Peacehaven Welcome to a new coach holiday company specifically for residents of Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven. After 20 years working for East & West Sussex Coach Companies, I’ve decided it was time to branch out on my own. Time that local coach travellers had a local company with local pick-ups close to their homes. No more sitting on ‘feeder’ coaches, running around the countryside picking up before you even start your journey. We have a full range of luxury coaches from 16 to 63 seaters, all driven by myself and escorted by our courier Stephanie, who will be looking after you on your trip. For our short breaks and holidays, we use a luxury 32 seater diner coach giving the ultimate coaching experience.
Each morning you will receive complementary morning coffee and biscuits. We are presently putting together a full range of day trips, short breaks and holidays. You are the most important person in the company, so our aim is to give you leisurely, exciting and interesting holiday destinations, ones that you wish to go too. If you don’t already know us why not join us on our ‘Get To Know Us Day Trip’, meet us and see what we have planned for you in the future. We’d love to know where you want to visit or holiday. We want to continue to give you great holidays, good hotels and interesting visits. We look forward to meeting you and taking you to all sorts of exiting destinations.

Seaford schools and nurseries have also been invited to take part in events, including a family-themed art competition for young people. An exhibition of photos, media and winning art works from March will be on display at Arts@theCrypt Gallery, 23 Church Street on Friday 6th April, ending with a Mayoral reception in the evening for event organisers and the winners of the art competition, where the total raised will be announced. Relax and De-stress with Angel Reiki
Louise Clare is a qualified Angelic Reiki Master, who lives and works in Peacehaven. She also practices Chakra Balancing and gives card readings. Louise asked me if I would be interested in trying some Angel Reiki with her. I had heard of Reiki before and having an interest in holistic therapies, I decided to give it a go. Louise works mostly from her home in Peacehaven, where she creates a very relaxing environment. She welcomed me into the low-lit room where tranquil music was playing and the air was filled with the light fragrance of burning incense. I really didn’t know what to expect, but Louise soon made me feel very calm and comfortable. Before the treatment, she told me a little about herself, her training and work experience and explained simply what would be involved. There are different types of Reiki, she explained, and some practitioners are hands on, whilst others are totally hands free. Louise uses part hands on and part hands off healing. But what actually is Angel Reiki? I asked Louise. Reiki is derived from the Japanese words Rei and Ki, which means universal life energy whereby healing energy is channelled through the healer to the recipient either by the healer placing their hands directly onto the recipient or by placing the hands very close to the recipient. The recipient is fully clothed (shoes removed) and lies down on a comfortable treatment couch or the treatment can be given seated in a chair if preferred. During the treatment Louise may place crystals on the chakra points - the word chakra comes from the sanskrit word for ‘wheel’ or ‘turning’ so a chakra is a vortex of energy. There are seven primary chakras in our bodies, each with an associated colour that energises our physical, emotional and mental states. By removing blockages in our chakras we are able to remove blockages in our lives, which helps us to discover our true self and what our purpose is in life. Along with Angel Reiki and crystals, Louise is able to check your chakras and enable healing and re-balancing to take place. Both Angel Reiki and Chakra Balancing will enhance your body’s own natural ability to heal; it can help to relieve stress, anxiety and depression, promote relaxation and help insomnia and can bring a great sense of calm and inner peace.
her hand down over my body, above the chakra points, I presumed. Although I wanted to watch Louise, I realised I had to totally switch off to really experience the treatment, so I closed my eyes and let go. I almost drifted off at times and then when Louise placed her hands on my legs and feet I felt a strange tingling sensation there. It felt as though my legs were floating and not touching the couch. Amazing! I had to twitch my toes to check they were still there! After half an hour, my treatment had finished and I gently sat up. How did I feel? I felt very calm, peaceful and contented. I chatted with Louise about my experience and how my legs and feet seemed to tingle. That’s not surprising, explained Louise, bearing in mind that I’m on the go all the while and therefore my feet never seem to touch the ground! Angel Reiki can channel the energy in your legs and feet to become more grounded. I had a very interesting and positive first-time experience of Angel Reiki. I would definitely consider having another session, as it simply gave me the opportunity to take time out to relax and calm both my mind and body - a necessity in today’s busy world. If it also helps remove blockages and improve my well-being, then even better. Incidentally, I was asleep by 8pm that evening! For Angel Reiki, Chakra Balancing and card readings, contact Louise Clare on 01273 585607 or email: louise@louiseclare.co.uk or visit www.louiseclare.co.uk
Experience the healing energy of Angel Reiki to help you to relax and recharge your batteries. Great for: General wellbeing l Stress l Poor sleeping l Low mood And so much more. Psychic card readings and chakra balancing also available. l
I lay on the treatment couch, closed my eyes and waited. Louise began by placing both her hands on my cheeks and she held them there for a good few minutes. She then gently placed her hands on the top of my head and again held Louise Clare them there for some time. I felt very relaxed. She applied this treatment on various points around my head, neck and upper chest; at times my skin felt very hot, then nothing... e: louise@louiseclare.co.uk I sneeked a peek to see what she was doing. In addition CTLA will be upgrading their existing vehicle communication and tracking system to enable them to further improve the service provided to their clients. The photographs shows Mr Baker with one of CTLA’s fleet of minibuses along with Norman Bennett, Finance and Funding Manager and Derek Barnett, Operations Manager. Mr Bennett said “We were very grateful for the time Mr Baker could give us out of his very busy schedule. He was particularly interested to hear from us how the money he made available was actually being used to support the local community’s transport needs, something he is not always able to see in such a practical way. He also gave us some guidance on how we could try to overcome the perception that Community Transport is only for the mature or those with mobility problems ”
For more information please contact CTLA on 01273 517332.
Earlier this year Mr Baker made available £10m pounds nationally to support community transport. East Sussex County Council received £171,000 to support sustainable schemes in the County. Following a bid process administered by the County Council CTLA was one of a number of CT operators in the county to be awarded a share of the grant.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY SEAHAVEN FM Seahaven FM, the community radio station for Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven celebrated it’s first birthday on Monday 9th January. The station started full-time broadcasts on FM a year ago after over 3 years of behind the scenes preparation starting in 2008. Since starting its full-time FM service, the station has grown to become hugely popular with local residents and people working in the area, and it continues to grow. The station is one of about only 250 ‘not for profit’ community radio stations up and down the country. It is run entirely by volunteer presenters and also has a team of admin volunteers. Despite that, it still manages to broadcast more locally produced live radio than any other station you can hear in the area. MD Nick Mallinson said “This has been a very exciting year, we have achieved a huge amount, and the reaction from listeners has been beyond our expectations. As a not for profit organisation ourselves, we know only too well how difficult it is to raise funds, so I am very proud to say now we are on FM we have also been able to start helping local groups and charities with their fund raising and also get involved with things like work experience placements for schools, which means we can really make a difference to the local community. We are now looking for more projects to support so we can do much more in 2012 and the coming years.” To help run the station and it’s activities Seahaven FM is always looking for volunteers to help with the live programmes and the general running of the station. Experience is helpful but not essential as this is as much about the community as it is about radio and it is a great opportunity to find out how a local radio station works.

Running Commentary... Our sport of running is looking amazingly vibrant in this, our Olympic year, with probably more newcomers taking it up than ever before. Many of those are finding their way into the ‘fun run’ scene as well as other more challenging races. Most events in Sussex are dominated by veteran-aged runners so I am please to have Richard Kimber as this month’s guest contributor. It also follows on neatly from January’s article about ‘older’ runners. Richard writes… Why do I run? - because I like running. Is that too simple an answer? Along the seafront, across the cliffs, up on the Downs and back beside the river. What’s not to like about running around Seaford? The answer to that is heat, wind, cold and rain. Not fog, snow or ice. Rain isn’t too bad I suppose; you get used to it and contrary to my mother’s teaching, human skin is waterproof. Cold means an extra T-shirt, gloves and a hat. Wind makes me struggle, so I walk for a while, enjoy the view, and look forward to the run home. Heat is the worst thing the weather gods can throw at me. I use so much energy just trying not to boil over that there’s little left for running. But I feel I have to try, and I do… why? Maybe the answer lies in the start of my running. It was the summer of 2000. I was 56, not overweight but beginning to feel my age, and it was a few months since the easy words of the New Millennium Resolution had passed my lips “I must take more exercise.” The radio was on, a sport programme, Steve Cram was being interviewed, and said... “It’s easy to start running. You just get out of bed, put on your trainers, and jog as far as you can, note the point you’ve got to, and walk home. The next morning you jog to the same spot, turn round and jog a little more, maybe only 10 steps, so long as it’s more than the previous day.You just repeat that until you can jog all the way home. Then you repeat the whole process.” I started the next day. Life-changing advice. Thanks, Steve! Obviously there’s a certain amount of determination involved, and the satisfaction we all get from achieving a goal. Have I learnt anything since those early days? Habit is important; running is part of my routine but I don’t run every day. I need a break, if only to avoid becoming stale. Now I alternate short runs with longer runs and days off. Pace doesn’t come into it, I do what I can. The clock is a measure of my progress, not speed or distance and, yes, I do get satisfaction from running a course quicker than last time, but that doesn’t happen very often. Time is
24
something that happens while I’m running around Sussex. Usually I run on my own, but runners are a friendly bunch of souls and I enjoy running with a group on club night. That’s what works for me, and that’s the key. Whether it’s the route, the distance, the shoes, the clothes, it’s what works for you that counts. There are, of course, health advantages. I can play longer with my grandchildren; maybe that’s why I run. As the meerkat says “simples”. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club fitness and this month contributor, Richard Kimber.

Exercise for Pre-& Post-Natal Mums! If you are trying to get pregnant, start your fitness journey now. The fitter you are before you become pregnant the easier life will be when you are. Research has found that exercise throughout pregnancy is beneficial for mother and baby. Alex Parsons is the new Personal Trainer at Abs Personal Training specializing in pre-and post-natal exercise. Here is her help and advice for pre-and post-natal mums.
The Dos and Don’ts: • If you are already exercising, do reduce high intensity workouts. • If you have not previously exercised do talk to your midwife first. • Do wear layers of light clothing. • Do wear a good bra. • Do warm up and cool down. • Do take care with awkward positions; your centre of gravity changes and you may feel dizzy. • Don’t hold stretches for more than 10 seconds. • Don’t exercise lying on your back or front after the first trimester. • Don’t take part in contact sports. • Don’t overdo it; exercise at a mild to moderate intensity. Most importantly mum knows best; if it doesn’t feel comfortable, stop and if you are worried take medical advice.
Pelvic Floor It is important to exercise your pelvic floor because weakness can cause stress incontinence which can affect a third of all new mums. Kegels – Contract the pelvic floor muscles by lifting and holding for 10 seconds and gradually release. Begin with 5 sets of 10 repetitions, gradually increasing to 10 sets per day. The Wave – Contract the pelvic floor from the back to front. The contraction should be held for a few seconds and then released from the front towards the back. Aim for 5 repetitions.
Post Natal After the birth you are probably feeling sore, tired and wondering where all those extra pounds came from. I know I was! Resume pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible and after a few days start to do some gentle
26
tummy exercises (see below). You can also take short walks with your baby in the buggy; a little fresh air will do you both good. Pelvic tilts - Lie on your back, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Rotate your pelvis up and towards your rib cage pushing the small of your back against the floor. Then let your pelvis rotate back to its normal position so your lower back comes slightly off the floor. Tummy Tucks – Get on all fours, knees under your hips and hands under your shoulders. Inhale and relax your belly, then as you exhale contract your pelvic floor and draw in your belly button toward your spine. Inhale and repeat. Before embarking on more strenuous exercise wait until you have had your post-natal check with the doctor.
Weight control During pregnancy it is natural to put on weight for the health and wellbeing of mother and baby. A balanced diet will help your body repair but wait until after your post-natal check before you start to think about dieting.
Abs Personal Training Alex Parsons at Abs Personal Training is an enthusiastic and energetic trainer, having competed in 7 marathons, and is currently training for her fourth London Marathon. Alex says ‘I have a passion for health and fitness and believe that being active and eating a healthy diet is at the foundation of a fulfilled and long life. My real love is long-distance running and there is nothing better than running over the Downs or the feeling of crossing the finish line of the London Marathon. This immense feeling of freedom and sense of achievement has inspired me to help others achieve their own fitness goals.’ Tots and Tums is a new exercise class in Seaford for mothers where you can bring your baby along in their buggy. The classes will help you regain your prepregnancy body and meet other like-minded local mums. Alex’s Tots and Tums class came about after the birth of her daughter. Finding the time to exercise with a new baby was difficult enough but also trying to find baby sitters for a newborn made exercise take a back seat. Alex really needed a class where she could take her baby with her. If you would like some more advice from Alex, come and join one of her classes. Alex Parsons. Personal Trainer. Rotary Club of Seaford CHRISTMAS sleigh COLLECTION
Mandy Gard is new Headteacher at Chyngton Primary School When previous long-serving headteacher of Chyngton, Jon Anniss, announced his retirement last Spring, the school governors were unsurprisingly a little daunted by the task which loomed ahead: how to find and recruit a first-class head teacher who would take on this important role and lead Chyngton into its future, becoming a member of its close community to build on past successes. The recruitment process started with a consultation between the governing body and all the Chyngton staff, to decide what kind of person was needed: someone kind and open-minded, determined and hard-working, dedicated to children and their achievements… was this an impossible ideal? No. Mandy Gard is all of this and more, and for all these reasons she got the job. Mandy joins Chyngton from East Sussex County Council, where she had been Senior Advisory Headteacher since 2008. Prior to that she had been an advisor for East Sussex, and Headteacher at Plumpton Primary School. She thus brings to Chyngton a wealth of experience of leading schools – but also brings much more.
The Rotary Club of Seaford completed the Seaford sleigh rides with their welcome guest Santa (how he manages it, they just don't know) for 2011. During December, the club collected every weekday evening from December 1st to 23rd and Saturday mornings in Broad Street on 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. The club wish to thank their many good friends who took part in the collections with them, as well as all the people of Seaford who supported them so well in such difficult financial times. In fact the club collected the highest amount ever - all the proceeds will go towards helping organisations and individuals within Seaford. One again, many thanks from the Rotary Club of Seaford. www.seafordrotary.org.uk. Photo by Lisa Eades-Aylward.

Mandy has been a Seaford resident since 1994. She has demonstrated her commitment to education and the local community by teaching bridge at Seaford Head Adult Education classes and using her divemaster qualification to assist in the training of new scuba divers at Newhaven Scuba Centre. Mandy also maintains her understanding of being a learner herself: she is currently grappling with the Arabic language at Sussex University, and learning to tame a 600cc motorbike. Like the governors of the school, Mandy feels hugely privileged to be part of the Chyngton family. “I really wanted to be the head teacher here,” she says. “And I am looking forward to getting to know all the children, parents and staff. I want to find out what makes Chyngton the great school it is, and how we can work together to make it even better.”

The Society of Recorder Players might sound like a quaint old-fashioned organisation (which is why we say SRP) but it is far from old-fashioned in its approach and playing of music for recorders – of all shapes and sizes. We usually meet on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 2pm to 5pm in St James’ Centre in Blatchington Road. We start the afternoon in two groups and then come together for a second session altogether. As a special treat, once a year we have a Playing Day when a conductor from the national panel comes for the day and when we invite members of the public who enjoy playing the recorder to come and join us. An orchestra of 40 recorders, ranging from the top sopranino to the very low great bass is really quite impressive. The conductor always brings along a variety of music which both interests and stretches us. Those who play more than one instrument also have the opportunity to change parts during the day. Helen Hooker, well-known composer, conductor and arranger will lead this year’s Playing Day at St James’ on Saturday 24th March from 10am to 5pm. The day will start with coffee and registration at 10am with a break for lunch.

ST JAMES’ TRUST Thanks to Seaford Scene and other press coverage there are less people in Seaford who are saying: “What is ST JAMES’ TRUST?” This secular local charity is operating quietly from its large but well-hidden club house in Blatchington Road, close to the town centre. It is still one of the lesserknown and hardest working charities in Seaford but our profile is rising. From its own buildings, dedicated volunteers provide an amazing variety of services for the elderly and disabled members of the community. The reasonably priced on-site charity shop is open Monday to Friday 10am -12 noon and there is also a popular drop-in centre in the town (Old Town hall) where anyone can buy a cup of tea with a slice of cake and simply sit and relax in a warm friendly atmosphere or chat to the volunteers. We at the Trust would like to thank the people and service Clubs of Seaford, in particular Mr Clive Rogers (who holds guitar lessons in one of the trusts rooms) of Haven Guitar Club, the local Lioness Club, Inner Wheel and Rotary in Seaford for their support. We would also like to say a huge thank you to all of the people who made donations on our Flag Day, Open Day and Christmas Fair. We could not run the trust without this money. Also posthumously, the several people who left money to help the Trust to continue its work in the community. The Trust hosted an Open Day on Saturday October the 8th 2011 which was organised by Pat Case. We had over 200 visitors to our Clubhouse and, as a direct result acquired 6 new volunteers. We also held our first ever Christmas Fair on December 10th 2011 which was organised by Joyce Brooks. The Fayre was opened by the Mayor Linda Wallraven and we had a visit from Santa plus one of his elves. In line with our updated policy to encourage all ages in the community to visit the Trust we also held a children’s fancy-dress competition.
and their team at the Drop In, Bus Drivers and Escorts and all the Reception volunteers. Colin Hammond for his maintenance and all of the 60 odd volunteers who should not go unmentioned. We are still looking for volunteers and anyone interested in assisting should telephone 01323 492800.” St. James’ Trust hosts a number of groups at the Club House in Blatchington Road, including the Stroke & Caring Club, Lip Reading classes, Arts & Crafts, Hard of Hearing club, a music group and a recorder players, club, together with the very popular Tuesday lunch club which provides a delicious hot meal for senior citizens along with a door to door minibus collection service at a low cost. Toenail cutting and NHS hearing aid batteries replacement services with non-technical hearing aid maintenance are two of the regular services available at the Club House. There are places available in almost all of the activities and more information can be obtained by calling 01323 492800. The Trust is a mainly self-funding charity and relies totally on volunteers to help maintain its important services to the community. We have started to encourage younger people in the community to get involved and are pleased to say, that along with the guitar lessons, our rooms are now hosting dance and drama clubs. There are three large halls for hire at reasonable rates (which includes the use of the kitchenette) and a full-size catering kitchen that can be hired in conjunction with the Lower Hall for Children’s Parties, Wedding Anniversary Parties or family get-togethers. The halls are also available to businesses for training. We must also give thanks to American Express for the loan of Viv Reynolds on a six-month sabbatical to assist the Trust. Viv has helped a lot with funding applications, office organisation and volunteer training and has become a valuable member of the team. We have a huge problem with our outside lift room; it is falling down and we need to repair it as soon as possible or access to the first floor will be limited to fully mobile visitors. We are looking for £8,000 and any donations would be very gratefully appreciated by the Trust. If you are able to help us please contact Bryan Turner on 01323 492800 for more information.
Janet White cooked the annual Tuesday Lunch Club Christmas Dinner and 30 members enjoyed a complimentary meal with wine and sherry followed by a concert of Christmas and popular music from the St If you have any spare time, we are looking for people James’ Recorder Group. Trust Chairman Bryan Turner who can act as escort, minibus escort, man reception said “I was driving the bus to take home the members for a four-hour shift on a regular basis, prepare or serve after their meal and judging from the singing of carols lunches and refreshments, publicity and fund raise, and general laughter a good time was had by all.” He general building maintenance, decorate or co-ordinate added that the trust is run solely by unpaid volunteers activities. If you feel that you could assist in any of these and he thanks Pat Case, Joyce Brooks, Janet White and or just give some time, please contact Bryan Turner on their teams of volunteers for all the work they have put in this year to help with the Trust. Oscar Wilde The Synergy Theatre – last seen in Seaford in The Crouch Gardens in September performing a selection of Shakespearean monologues in the rain! - returns to Priory School, Lewes, with one of Oscar Wilde’s best-loved plays, The Importance of Being Earnest. The story of one man’s quest to discover his true identity, marry the girl of his dreams and (hopefully) avoid her mother, Earnest is a delicious comedy of manners, memorably adapted for the screen in both 1952 and 2002. Sparkling wit, razor-sharp put downs, possibly the only use in theatre of sugar lumps and fruit cake as weapons of revenge and, of course, The Handbag. Come prepared to giggle, guffaw and generally have a jolly good time! A special feature of the performance on Friday 17th, will be a Late Afternoon Tea in the company of Lady Bracknell and the cast, which will begin at 6.30pm. Tickets for Lady Bracknell ‘At Home’ will be £14 (£12 concessions) to include afternoon tea. A lovely opportunity to meet the cast and enjoy homemade delicacies served by Lady Bracknell’s personal staff! Pre-booking for Lady Bracknell ‘At Home’ is essential – please contact our Box Office, who will be happy to provide further details. We are extremely proud to be joined by some of Seaford’s talented actors for this production. Three students from Seaford Head Community College - Joseph Annette-Norman (‘Algernon Moncrieff ’), Rhianna Colyer (‘Cecily Cardew’) and Harriet Langridge (‘The Maid’), along with their drama teacher, Samantha Macefield (‘Miss Prism’) - will be taking part, along with Seaford Little Theatre stalwart, Ian Clegg (‘Dr Chasuble’) and Seaford resident, John Hamilton (‘Merriman’/‘Lane’). Do come along to Priory School and support some of Seaford’s own! The Importance of Being Earnest runs from Tuesday 14th – Saturday 18th February 2012, 7.30pm (Friday: 6.30pm). Tickets (£10/£8) (Friday: £14/£12) are available from our Box Office on 01273 301444 or online at www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

What do you like best about Seaford? I think we are so lucky to live next to the sea and the cliffs. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Dancing Queen, Abba. It brings back special memories of being a kid. I’m going to have it played at my funeral. What is your favourite film? Arthur with Dudley Moore. And I know all the words - sad, but I don’t care! What is your idea of happiness? Sunday, husband, dogs, a walk, and a roast. Heaven! What book are you reading? I listen to audiobooks at work every day, and I’ve just finished the Stieg Larsson trilogy. I didn’t want them to end. Where is your favourite place to go in Seaford and why? Walking up on the head and then down to the seafront - lovely peaceful walk and the dogs seem to love it up there. What is the first line of your favourite poem? To see a world in a grain of sand…. William Blake, Auguries of innocence. What is your favourite smell? Fresh coffee. Reminds me of my husband. How do you relax? Taken up swimming so when I’m counting laps I can’t think of anything else. What makes you sad? The thought that I didn’t spend enough time with the people I love, when they are no longer here. What keeps you awake at night? Nothing. I’m a 9 hours a night girl. What is your greatest extravagance My lovely friend who cleans my house. Coming home from work on a Thursday is fab. What is your favourite journey? The trip to our house in France, on empty French roads. It means I’m on holiday. What is your greatest fear? Spiders What is the most important lesson life has taught you? How lucky I am.

Seaford Gardening Club Let’s hope the new year of 2012 will be a prosperous and happy one for us all! There will be a good deal of national celebration with the Golden Jubilee and the Olympic Games. Some of us may even be involved in one way or another. Seaford Gardening Club will hold an event to commemorate both of the festivities. We did not have a talk in December but our Christmas meal at the Avondale Hotel in Seaford on the 14th was a very enjoyable evening for the 29 members and guests who attended. We were greeted on arrival with a dining room looking very festive, a Christmas tree and tables all beautifully decorated. While we waited for everyone to arrive, the customary quiz papers were given out and raffle tickets sold. The meal was then served by Martin and other waiters whilst Jane was busy in the kitchen putting the finishing touches to the very delicious festive fare. By the time the mince pies, coffee and mints were placed on the tables, we all had a happy, satisfied glow about us! A truly wonderful meal to end our year. Now we must look forward to the planned talks and outings for 2012. Although our gardens seem to be in limbo at the present time, we know that things are stirring beneath the soil, ready to send up the first spring bulbs. My Camellia started to open its first blooms as the new year began and the helleborus is showing signs of life. Anne Silk Left: White Helleborus, above Camellia Japonica
Our next talk will be on Wednesday 29th February at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (using the rear door please). Our speaker will be Dr Barry Yates who will show us the “plants at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve”. Please come along for an enjoyable evening with a friendly gathering. You are welcome to come as a visitor for the evening for a fee of £2 or you can join as a member for £10 a year. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331, or visit our website at www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

hardy Annuals under glass ready to prick out in March. 3 Check frost protection on susceptible plants and shrubs in the garden; add extra protection if forecast is heavy frosts or snow. 3 Gladioli will flower earlier if started off in the greenhouse. Place corms in trays in full light if average temperature can be maintained at 10°c. Young shoots should soon appear but watch out for aphids. 3 If you have overgrowing climbers start pruning using the one- third system. (Remove one third of the oldest, overgrown branches). 46

Prices are more expensive and are about £9 for three plants. Suttons even provide ‘twin plants’, that’s two different varieties grafted onto one stem. Dobies have a smaller collection but they do include three Shirley Tomatoes at only £7.95. Unwins Seeds also have a small collection that appear to be mostly tomatoes. In my view grafted plants are probably a sign of things to come. I’ll try some this year for the first time and see if they live up to expectations!

ast year I first became aware of the existence of the availability of grafted or turbo vegetable plants. A friend of mine bought some from a local garden centre but did not find them a great success. They are now being fully promoted by several leading seed companies with a much larger choice of varieties for the 2012 season. The seed catalogues say that these are healthy, vigorous and incredibly strong plants that should provide you with up to 75% more crops than the standard plants grown from seed. Grafted plants are available for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squashes and melons. All suppliers claim that plants are more likely to be successful, especially for the new gardener. All are available by mail order or on the internet. Suttons Seeds say they will also be available from selected local garden centres. Paradise Park, Newhaven have confirmed that they will be stocking grafted tomato plants in the spring.
Preparing the veg SEED Bed
February is one of the coldest months of the year but things are beginning to stir in the garden. It is now “preparation time” in the vegetable garden! Start by double digging any new seed-bed, Add manure or compost. Renew an existing bed by single digging to break up any large clods left over winter. Remove large stones and debris then rake to a fine tilth. Apply a top dressing (blood, fish & bone) and check your crop rotation plan. This means you should not grow the same crop in the same place over a period of three years. (An exception to this could be your runner-bean trench). Now is this time to cover the ground with sheets of polythene or cloches. This will warm up the soil for several weeks and give you a head start when sowing your first seeds. The traditional way to prepare a runner-bean trench is to dig your trench two foot wide and one spade’s depth (One spit). Then just loosen the bottom soil with a fork. Over a period of several weeks fill with kitchen waste, old compost or old grow-bags. Build up the trench with added layers of soil plus “chicken manure/ pellets”. When finished cover with polythene etc to warm up the soil until planting out beans later in the year.Your seed and vegetable bed should now be ready to give a fine harvest of fresh, young vegetables! Living at Cuckmere Haven
Part 6
Never have Robb and I lived our lives so in tune with Nature. For years we’ve talked of living more closely with the seasons and with the changing moods of the weather, but so much of modern day life deadens or removes the experience, not least electric light. Now, we’re in a mad dash to get things done before the sun goes down, and as the last streaks of light stain the sky, you’re most likely to find us scurrying around making sure we can locate everything we need for the evening ahead. That’s not to say we need much! Our evenings are mostly spent reading and relaxing, and I now have two teetering towers of books by my bed. Getting into bed is the most productive use of warmth, especially with a hot water bottle. Any excuse to work my way through my favourite novels on a cold winter’s evening! The days are steadily lengthening and I never truly noticed these minute changes on a daily basis before. These beautiful winter days take the breath away – literally! – but the lack of wind means our electricity supply has been erratic at best. Recently we’ve been lucky if we can run the computer for an hour or so each week. But the incredible tranquillity of a windless day more than makes up for it. Just before I sat down to write this (on what’s left of our laptop battery), I popped outside to see the moon. A few days after the magical first full moon of the year, the Wolf Moon, the waning moon is glowing with its own halo. The sky is littered with stars, I truly don’t think I’ve ever seen so many in my life. Little dots of light are reflected in the pools left by the retreating tide. I can see brightly lit boats strung along the indigo horizon like a glittering necklace – it seems the fishermen are making use of these calm seas. In the stillness, you can hear the gentle lapping of the waves and occasionally a bird-call from the rockpools. Finally, the winter snap that everyone’s been talking about! Preceded by all those mild days when confused birds burst into spring chatter and bulbs edged experimentally to the surface of the soil, it’s always a bit surprising to have to root through the coats to find a really warm winter one, and a hat, scarf and gloves to boot! Robb and I have lived without central heating
before so we’re accustomed to wrapping up warm indoors as well as out. It’s amazing how quickly a human body adapts and we spent most of our Christmas visits to the centrally heated homes of family and friends peeling off layers and pink in the face. I find that a morning cup of ginger tea (chopped root ginger steeped in hot water with a dash of honey) and a brisk walk/jog with the dog gets the circulation going. We went away with family for a week in January and stayed in a lovely country house in Somerset, complete with hot water on tap, hot baths and showers, a washing machine, electric light, a dishwasher, a stereo system, DVD players, heating…the list of luxuries was endless! And it was perfect to start the new year basking in the warmth of the family; laughing, eating, talking, walking, reading, relaxing and playing games. There was a big storm whilst we were away and we dreaded what we might find upon our return - the house blown away like Dorothy’s in the Wizard of Oz?! Though the friends who were looking after it had assured us all was well, we hardly dared believe them. When we got home, everything was fine. And the best welcome? The cats, all three of them, fluffy and warm and pleased to see us. What better way to stave off the winter’s chill than with a houseful of pets? After all the home comforts and mod cons the holiday cottage provided, we wondered if it would be difficult to adjust back to our Cuckmere lifestyle. But one morning of waking to the pink and orange dawn, with the fiery globe of the sun bowling up merrily on the left, and the moon glowing white on the right, soon reminded us what an incredible blessing every day is here. As Sinead O’Connor so eloquently put it, nothing compares to you (Cuckmere)! Lucy Corkhill Photo by Lucy Mutter

The Shelter by Alan Morton I am not joking, if there is a God of weather, or maybe it’s Mother Nature, but no sooner had August expired and the last remnants of the miserable grey summer retreated, than the wind started to blow and the rains came to welcome my world to September. The day started well; it was a beautiful this morning and I had driven the fifteen miles to the village that I was due to make a couple of my Social Services calls. Having completed my first visit I decided to walk to the second across to the other side of the village. My keep-fit regime had receded into remission and I was looking to delude myself that I had at least made an effort today. By the time I arrived the clouds were gathering and the skies looked threatening. When I left forty-five minutes later things had not improved and there were spots of rain already in the air. I walked as fast as I could along the main road as the heavens proceeded to evacuate everything it could upon me. The wind was driving hard and the rain was more or less horizontal as I struggled along in shoes that were nice to own, good to look at but hopeless for scampering along a country road in the pouring rain. I was completely soaked as I ran towards a bus stop which was the only form of shelter on offer. I saw a figure running from the opposite direct and he ducked into the shelter about fifteen seconds before I arrived; the definitive drowned rat; cotton dress soaked to embarrassing proportions, mascara running, hair plastered to my head, shoes ruined and my legs spattered with muddy water. Just great! Could life get any worse! The man was shaking his coat from the collar to rid himself of some of the rain that had settled upon him. There was something familiar about him, although I only saw him from an acute angle as he had his back to me when I stumbled into the shelter. I looked down at myself in despair and realised that my dress was practically transparent, it was so wet. I held my arms in a pose of futile modesty when the man took off his hat and shook it. Oh, my God! “Alright?” he said, nodding his head at me. Of course I’m not alright, do I look alright? I am soaked to the skin, look a wreck and to cap it all I am sharing a bus shelter with you! “Yes, thanks,” I answered keeping my thoughts to myself; I even managed a weak smile. “It’ll clear up in mo, it’s only a shower,” he said. “I hope so.” “Do you live near here? Have you got a car?” “No, ergh yes, I mean I don’t live here, but my car is just up the road. I was just visiting.” I didn’t know what to say. What do you say?
52
Quick think of something. “Are you waiting for a bus?” Arghh, you idiot! Course he’s not waiting for a bus, he doesn’t go on buses. He was just sheltering from the rain…. The same as I was. “No, just sheltering from the rain. I was getting a spot of fresh air and nipping down the local store.” “Right, I see. Do you…. do you, sort of live around here then?” “I have a place nearby, yes.” “Ok, good, nice. It’s a nice village, and the countryside is nice around here. He nodded and smiled. Silence…. The rain was easing off and I could see he was looking to make a move. Shall I?.... Shall I?. Oh, what the hell! “I don’t suppose you could sign an autograph for me could you?” I said, starting to look through my bag looking for a pen and something suitable to write on. “Nobody will believe me otherwise.” He smiled again. I had taken a number of objects out of my handbag while rummaging through, and was holding them in my hand. “Is that a camera there?” he said, “wouldn’t a photo be better than a signature that anybody can forge.” “Oh, my God, really, yes that would be lovely….thanks so much.” I turned the little pocket Digi-matic on and was lining up the shot when he asked if it would be better if were both in it. “What, how? In these clothes, I look such a mess.” “What’s your name?” “Kate.” “Well, Kate, just straighten your hair a bit and I’ll take it….just head and shoulders like.” “Wait until my grandchildren here about this,” I said. “Would they know who I am?” “Oh, yes I am sure they will; if not there are plenty of us who can tell them!” I tidied my hair and did the best I could with my mascara - I even managed a quick dash of lipstick before I snuggled in under his chin and, with arm outstretched, he took the photo. “Is it ok?” he said, as I checked the screen on the back of the camera. “Yes, fine. I can’t believe it. Thank you so much, you have made my day.” “Take care now,” and he ran across the road. “Goodbye, Mr McCar…….Paul.” “Ta-ra Kate.”

Wills Are you aware of how your estate would be distributed if you died without making a will? It might not be as you think or would wish for, leaving a lot of potential problems for your beneficiaries. A will is inexpensive to make and the professional advice you will receive at Barwells will ensure that your loved ones are left with as few problems as possible.
Lasting Powers of Attorney This document enables you to give named persons, your attorneys, the powers to deal with your affairs should you become unable to deal with them yourself. The document can be, and should be, prepared well in advance so that it is there if the time comes. It must not be left until it is too late as a person without capacity cannot then appoint attorneys and an application to the Court to appoint a Deputy must be made, which is much more time consuming and expensive. The moral is to prepare the document when you can and, if you have elderly relatives, make sure that they have done so as well.
Estates If a relative has passed away, it is very often a stressful time for the family. In these circumstances, our team of specialists at Barwells can take the burden of dealing with the estate off your hands, bringing to bear our extensive experience in the administration of estates. If you find yourself having to consider dealing with an estate, give us a call and we can let you know how we can help.
Special Spring Offer Consult us regarding a Lasting Power of Attorney and receive a 20% discount on our normal charge on production of this leaflet. Offer ends 30th April 2012.

SBG Computers of East Sussex It appears that the Mayor of Seaford will be very busy in the coming weeks with a myriad of fundraising events being planned and prepared for the ‘Mayor’s Mad March Marathon’, all on behalf of the charity, WAVES. WAVES, the Seaford-based charity providing support for carers, children and families, was chosen in 2011 to be the Mayor’s charity of the year 2011-2012 and has benefited from many events and fundraisers as part of the scheme, such as collections at Seaford Late Night Shopping and the Mayor’s Open Gardens 2011. The Mayor has said that WAVES was the perfect choice for her charity of the year because ‘they are Seaford-based’ and the volunteers do so much ‘work for local families’. The work of WAVES has become a huge part of the lives of many people in Seaford and the local area, from young children through to teenagers, to parents, carers and families as a whole. From providing a counselling service in schools to running courses to promote contact and communication between parents and children, the work of WAVES gives the people of Seaford an important family support network. This coming March, the Mayor and WAVES have an entire month of fundraisers planned out in order to ‘increase awareness’ of WAVES, as well as to raise as much money as possible to aid their incredible work in Seaford and the surrounding area. With nearly 20 events already marked in the calendar, it is hoped that on every date in March, an event will be taking place on behalf of WAVES. Already planned are events ranging from Bishopstone Horticultural Show to an M&CO Fashion Show and even a charity football match between the Mayor’s XI and Seaford Town FC! The Mayor’s Mad March Marathon 2012 promises to be a month full of fundraising and fun, and is being looked forward to by all involved. More information about the programme of events can be obtained through contacting the Mayor’s office or Seaford Council. Any suggestions are welcome for fundraising events to fill the few remaining dates in March. I would like to thank the Mayor for giving me the time to talk about the Mayor’s Mad March and for her input into this article. Vicci Cowlett

MEN - READ THIS STORY AND WEEP A client called me in mid-December asking for legal help with a romantic surprise. He wanted to buy a holiday home for him and his girlfriend, and needed it all done in secret in time for a Christmas surprise. Once I had recovered from my nausea at such a gesture I had to work out what to do. We purchased the property in the client’s name only on 22nd December and then had a nominee declaration of trust drawn up. The generous chap was then able to legally confirm that he owned the place on behalf of both of them. We put together a nice-looking
version of the document which the client duly wrapped up and gave to his love on Christmas Day. Needless to say she was a very happy lady and they had a very nice Christmas at their nice new holiday home. This goes to show even cynical old lawyers can play a part in romance, although we prefer it with a little more notice. SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museums’s vast diverse collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which will identify it at the museum. Penny Farthing? Although we know this as a ‘Penny Farthing’ the term was not actually used by the Victorians, who simply knew them as ‘bicycles’. It wasn’t until the invention of the safety bicycle, the design we use today, that the ‘Penny Farthing’ acquired its name, after the coinage of the time. The penny farthing was developed in the 1870s and surprisingly was popular for only about ten years. It is apparently much easier to ride than it appears and could be quite fast due to the direct-drive pedals and the large front wheel. This splendid example at Seaford museum was renovated recently by museum volunteers and is particularly popular with children. Seaford in Bloom The Seaford in Bloom 2012 programme starts with one of Seaford’s most popular fund-raising events, the Seaford in Bloom Soup, Spud and Pud Lunch. This will take place in St Leonard’s Church Hall on Wednesday 14th March from 12.30pm – 2pm. Entry is by ticket only. This event is always extremely popular, and tickets costing £7 including coffee, will soon be available from Fotobox in Broad Street and Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents, Station Approach Seaford. Our main annual fund-raising event, the Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day, will be on Sunday 15th July. Although there are several other Open Gardens weekends taking place in and around Seaford this year, we hope that our event will once again be well supported, as it has been for the last 15 years. All the money raised from our events goes towards funding the floral displays in Seaford, which get better and better each year. The main colour theme for this year’s displays will be red, white and blue, marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year. With the many extra visitors generated by the 2012 Olympics, we hope to make the Seaford displays bigger and more colorful than ever this summer. The judging of the 2012 Floral Competition will take place on Tuesday 10th July.

‘Poetry, People, Places and Things’ by Helen Holden Saturday 4th – Saturday 11th February Tuesday – Saturday 11am-4pm; Sunday 12noon-4pm, Closed Monday A combination of retirement from teaching English, relocation to Lewes, and an unleashed passion for painting found Helen Holden increasingly drawn to oil painting people and scenes, most often inspired by the sea, along with a deep connection with lines of poetry. Having previously exhibited at the New English Art Club, The Sussex Open and in selected group shows, this, her ninetieth year, finds Helen celebrating her first long-awaited solo exhibition. MYSTERY ARTIST... CAN ANYONE HELP? Can anyone help with information about the artist who produced this beautiful image of Seaford? His name was Eric Slater and he lived in East Albany Road in Seaford from 1929 until his death in 1963 at the age of 66. Between 1928 and 1938 he produced more than 30 colour woodcuts, mostly of the landscape within ten miles of his home. And then, mysteriously, he seems to have stopped. No pictures appear to exist from the outbreak of war to his death almost 25 years later. He had no close relations and left the bulk of his estate to Cancer Research. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of his death and I am hoping to organise an exhibition of his woodcuts and watercolours and produce a booklet about his life. Please contact me, James Trollope, at troll@fastnet. co.uk or 01323 893256, if you own one or more of his pictures or know anything, however little, about him. I am particularly interested to hear from anyone who saw or met Eric Slater in those last 25 years of his life.

CHRISTMAS AT THE BARN REVIEW Christmas cheer was contagious after Seaford Musical Theatre put on a truly fantastic show at the Barn Theatre on Saturday 10th December.
Full of energy and enthusiasm ‘Christmas at the Barn’ was an absolute joy to watch. Featuring nearly 100 Christmas classics, ranging from a festive rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Brick in the Wall’ to ‘Santa Baby’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, the show kept audience rocking from start to finish. Despite the aggressive and highly morbid commentary from the old woman at the back of the theatre, the occasion was not dampened and spirits remained high. The glittering cast of Santa’s little helpers sung wonderfully and were all smiles from start to finish. Steve Llewelyn’s first solo ‘Lonely This Christmas’ really stood out from the winter wonderland of karaoke. Beautifully sung and sounding very much like Elvis, Llewelyn was a delight to listen to. Without a doubt this was one of the best solos in the production. Bringing energy in abundance was Graham Tubb and his toe-tapping rendition of ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.’ Expertly managing to tap dance and sing at
the same time, his performance was light hearted and fun, and clearly enjoyed by the audience. Of the many songs we were treated to, everyone seemed to enjoy ‘12 Days of Christmas’ the most. The cast embarked upon a hysterical fight for centre stage as they sung this classic. Comical from start to finish this song was brilliant to watch. Special recognition should go to Shar Turnbull who sung the line ‘a partridge in a pear tree’ with such great facial expression and gusto that she had the audience in fits of giggles. Laughter came thick and fast from the audience as Turnball excellently played a disgruntled and increasingly agitated elf. Topping off a great afternoon of entertainment came Sam Jones and his incredible snow magic. The silence was audible as Sam inexplicably made it snow out of the palms of his hands. It was a truly outstanding trick that really brought the magic of Christmas to life. All round, Seaford Musical Society put on a really fantastic performance. It was great fun to watch and I’m sure many were left amazed by the cast’s intense stamina! Another round of applause please for a really brilliant ‘Christmas at the Barn’. By Emily-Jane Polling

Seaford Scene History Article
The 1795 Seaford Mutiny 8.30am, Saturday June 13th, 1795. Goldstone Bottom, Brighton. Two soldiers from the Oxfordshire Militia are kneeling on their own coffins. In front of them is a firing squad of twelve men from their regiment. A crowd of 8,000 is watching. The condemned men seem quite calm. One asks the other “are you ready?”, and the firing squad shoots, hitting both men four times. Shortly before this, six other men from the ‘Oxfords’ had been given hundreds of lashes each. Later in the day, two or three Oxfords were hanged in Horsham. These people had all taken part in the Seaford Uprising of April 1795. In the mid-1790s, the government feared a sea invasion by Revolutionary France, so each county had to form a militia, made up of volunteers, and these were stationed all along the south coast. In January 1795, the Oxfords were sent to barracks between Seaford and Tide Mills. In those days, there were no military rations, so soldiers had to buy their own food. The Oxfordshires’ wages were not enough to feed themselves properly, and local traders often sold them rotten food. Their housing was poorly built, and “at night, the rain and snow still beat down on them between the roof tiles.” 1795 was the coldest January on record, and early February saw “very heavy rain over a number of days.” As well as all this, the soldiers had to march 20 miles a day. Morale was very low, and many soldiers were ‘weak and ill’ from the bad food. On the evening of Thursday April 16th, 1795, some men from the Oxfords marched to the shop of a Seaford butcher who had repeatedly sold them bad meat. “Here they broke in, seized his stock, impaled it on bayonets and carried it aloft through the town.” The regiment’s officers quickly arrived and calmed the men down. However, the next morning, 500 Oxfords fixed bayonets to their rifles, and marched back into Seaford. They ran riot, “seizing all the foodstuffs they could lay their eager hands on”. Seaford's population was only about 850 at the time, so the locals had little chance to stop this. The town's defence group, the Seaford Volunteers, did try and calm things down. However, they were ‘vastly outnumbered’ by the rioting Oxfords, who ‘jeered’ at them. The Oxfords then moved on to Tide Mills and Newhaven, where they continued to run riot. Some
went back to barracks that night, while about 60 stayed out. The next morning, soldiers came from Lewes and Shoreham, and easily captured the remaining mutineers, “many of whom were still drunk from their excesses the night before.” Though 500 men took part in the mutiny, only around ten were punished, four or five with death.
