East sussEx BroadBand ProjEct MovEs into ProcurEMEnt stagE Businesses and residents of East Sussex are asked to urgently register their support for better broadband through the ‘Go e-sussex’ campaign. This campaign was launched by East Sussex County Council to provide evidence of public demand for faster broadband in the county. The call comes as East Sussex County Council’s project to install faster, more reliable broadband in the county moves into the procurement stage. This means that a private sector partner will soon be selected to install the infrastructure that is essential for providing a better broadband service. It is expected that a contract will be in place by late spring, with work beginning sometime at the end of the year. Jenny Devane, East Sussex County Council’s Engagement Manager for the Broadband project said: “Over 8,000 homes and businesses have registered their support through our ‘Go e-sussex’ campaign and we still need more. “The more registrations we receive, the more attractive we become for potential broadband providers. This will add weight to our negotiations and will help us to ensure that we get the best possible value from the public funding that has been allocated to this project. It only takes a few moments to register at our website www.goesussex.co.uk so please join thousands of others and ensure the county’s future is a superfast one. Registering your interest does not mean you will have to subscribe to the service when it’s launched, but saying Yes, to superfast broadband will directly help everyone in East Sussex receive faster, more reliable broadband.” Enhancing the digital provision will make East Sussex a far more accessible place to live and work. It will mean having a fast, reliable internet service regardless of where you live; the ability to access online services quickly and easily, being able to work from home without worrying about losing your connection to your colleagues and clients. It will attract new business into the county and boost the local economy. For more news and information and to complete the online registration form (or phone 01273 335991 if you require a paper copy).

RoTARY CLUB oF SEAFoRD Grand Rotary Club Charity Quiz Night
received the following reply: “Can we just say a big thank you to all at the Rotary Club Seaford, for the very generous donation of £500. This donation has helped us to secure a beautiful caravan in Eastbourne so we can continue to provide free holidays for children suffering the trauma of childhood cancer. Once again a massive thank you from the members of Team Spencer, we really do appreciate your support. Kind Regards, Amanda”
14 teams took part in this year’s Quiz Night held at Seaford Head School, and “Welly Wanderers” retained the Rotary Club of Seaford trophy after a thrilling tiebreak question against Seaford Golf Club’s “Outlaws”. During a break in proceedings, a hot supper was provided, courtesy of our supporters Pippa Logan and Wendy Breeds. Food was accompanied by excellent vocalist entertainment from Friend of Rotary Chris Foster. When the final whistle blew, all agreed it had been an enjoyable battle – even the Dance Company Ladies team (which included one gentleman) agreed it had all been an entertaining struggle, and they came last! Thanks to our generous sponsors, Diella’s, Eastbourne Theatres, Morrisons and Tescos. As well as all this, we made about £465 from an event that was a really good social evening.
March saw Seaford Rotary’s President Paul Vaesen accept a cheque for £241 from Head Boy Ed Bree and Head Girl Abbie Jaques Newlands School, raised from an earlier non-uniform day in support of Rotary International’s campaign for the global eradication of polio. Paul in turn presented them with a certificate of thanks in recognition of their efforts. He said “I am delighted that we have been able to engage with Newlands School on this project, and I must thank the students, staff and parents who have made this possible. Polio now only exists in three countries in the world and, with a concerted effort, it can be eradicated fully. Newlands School has helped to make this happen.”
Remember Spencer
Florence Hardy
A while ago Amanda and Paul Roberts contacted us to see if we could help their charity “Remember Spencer”. Spencer, their son, tragically died from cancer at the beginning of 2008, and Remember Spencer was started to help other children who are suffering from the disease, and their families. We agreed to pledge £500 to help one of their projects which was to provide an upgraded caravan for holidays which would help sufferers and their families. We received the following wonderful email from Amanda: “Further to our previous emails, we have now managed to secure a caravan at a beautiful 5 Star Site in Eastbourne. Although we couldn’t afford a brand new caravan, the one we have bought is a much higher spec and on a much nicer site, with its own private beach and wonderful leisure facilities. Our cancer families will not fail to have wonderful holidays. We are now also booked up for the whole of the summer holidays, which is fantastic.” We immediately sent off the cheque, and

Rotary Club of Seaford Receives a Donation from Newlands School
We have supported Seaford-based Girl Guide Florence Hardy, 14, with a £500 pledge to travel with London and South East Region Girl Guiding to work in a service project in Peru this summer. Florence will work in a home for abused children with disabilities near to Lima. The home was established by Brighton-based charity Kiya Survivors. Florence will be working to build a classroom for the school and will be assisting with teaching the young people. She says “I’m really looking forward to the Peru project. I’m going with Guides from all over the South East and I’m happy to be able to help young people who have less than I have. It will be a real adventure and I can’t wait to visit Machu Picchu”. Florence has been a guide for four years and is the first guide in her Unit to receive the Baden Powell Award. Photos are Winners Welly Wanderers with President Paul, the Remember Spencer caravan, Florence Hardy.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Spring 2013
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our Spring 2013 Newsletter, which we hope you will find useful and informative, and which opens this time with a section concerning the No Cold Calling Zone.
NO COLD CALLING ZONE
It may not seem like it, but the Seaford and Bishopstone No Cold Calling Zone has now been in operation for over a year and we are very pleased to report that the Police have advised us the number of incidents concerning unwelcome callers has fallen considerably during this time, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Zone. Gradually, the message has got through to doorstep callers and traders, that this town will not tolerate unwelcome intrusions, and residents now have the confidence to ask callers to leave immediately and that they can summon the Police if they ask a caller to leave, but they desist. In this first year, we have erected the five signs on the road entrances to Seaford and Bishopstone, and also distributed over 8000 door notices for residents to display. Our Zone and its implementation will be nominated for a scheme award at the National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Awards ceremony being held in June this year.
SUBSCRIPTIONS/MEMBERSHIP
May we kindly remind readers that the membership year now runs from January to December, and we had approx. 850 subscribers for 2013 when this newsletter went to print. There are approx. 900 lapsed members on the books, so if you have not yet renewed for this year, or wish to become a new member, we invite you to use the renewal form over the page. If you are not sure about whether you have already renewed, please do not hesitate to contact our Membership Secretary, Martin French, on 873946 or at:
12
martin.french@post.com who will be happy to check your status. Please ensure you provide your full email address clearly if you wish to receive our updates and police notices, as we now only send these to current members. The main benefits of membership are as follows:• Your local area can be monitored by a Road Co-ordinator, leading to lower crime rates. • By supplying an email address, you will receive regular emails from NHW which will include Police news and updates of local information. • 4 Newsletters per year. • Improved local relations and a sense of Community Spirit. • Peace of mind that neighbours, even if you don’t know them, have the same values and also wish to see a crime-free area. • A channel to report suspicious issues to the local Police and to receive information back from them. • Reduction in premiums on Home and Contents Insurance from most insurance companies. SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE We would like to bring your attention to a new initiative based in Seaford called “Seahaven Storehouse”. This is an organisation recently launched, which is able to provide emergency vital basic food supplies to local families or individuals who have been referred by local agencies. The food bank is located in the Community Church in Vale Road and is currently open on Thursdays from 10am to 1pm. There is a collection point in Morrisons Store, if anybody would like to donate food/cans etc to this cause. The contact details of Seahaven Storehouse are 07921 844930 or seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com Our Chairman personally supports this venture and any support you can give would be gratefully received.

SECURITY TIPS
It is timely to include a reminder of a number of security issues that crop up regularly, and that you should remain alert to: Distraction Thefts – These can occur at shop tills, cash machines, petrol stations etc where you are distracted by one person, and a second tries to take your card/money/purse etc when your attention is diverted. “Water Board” Con – Two workmen arrive at your door pretending to be from the Water Board, or similar, and they need to check something indoors. One of them keeps you talking in one room, while the other steals from the other rooms. Email Scams – There are many, many email scams, but please be alert to those that direct you from a secure site to an insecure one when shopping online, or those that ask you to reconfirm your bank account details and passwords etc Parking – Try and park in a well-lit location after dark, never leave valuables etc on view in your car at any time, and always close windows and lock up – even on your own drive.
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS
The Police Panel Meetings are open to all residents and one is held in each of the three areas every three months. The next meetings are as follows: West Panel – 1st May, 7pm at Bishopstone Church Hall. (A high-ranking officer of the Sussex Police Force is due to attend this particular meeting). East Panel – 21st May, 7:30pm at St Luke’s Church Hall, Walmer Road. Central Panel – 5th June, 6pm at Council Offices, 37 Church Street. Times and venues are also displayed at the Police Station, No 37 Church Street, and on the Police website www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our 2013 Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 21st March and was very successful.
Following a consensus request from our Deliverers, it was our first AGM to be held on a weekday evening, rather than a Saturday morning as in previous years. The venue was also changed to provide better access and parking. The Chairman and existing Committee were re-elected for a further year, and the meeting also included our guest speaker, Peter White, who gave an informed talk about the art of the Town Crier. Refreshments were served and member discussions took place after the AGM. Members were encouraged to give their views and suggest ways in which we can improve our organisation.
COMMITTEE VACANCIES
We are urgently in need of volunteers to fill the roles of Secretary and Publicity Officer, so if you are able spare a few hours here and there and help us in this worthwhile cause, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
CALL FOR SPEED GUN VOLUNTEERS
The Police have a mobile Speed Gun for use as a speeding deterrent in the town, and this can be deployed by groups of 2 or 3 volunteers. At the moment, there are very few volunteers, so the gun is hardly used as a tool to combat anti-social driving. If you would like to put yourself forward for a short training session and to assist in deploying the gun occasionally, PSCOs Cathy Clarke or Noel Daniels would be very pleased to hear from you, either by email or leaving a message at the Police Desk. Contact details are catherine.clarke@sussex.pnn. police.uk or noel.daniels.01@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

There was an abundance of baby and children’s clothes and toys for sale as well as cakes and coffee. We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor, who called in on us. In excess of £240 was raised to support the work of WAVES (Working Alongside Voluntary Enabling Services) as they seek to support families in Seaford who are vulnerable, seeking to relieve extreme pressure on families with children thereby strengthening family life and preventing the possible breakdown of the family unit.

NEWhAVEN, PEACEhAVEN & SEAFoRD LIoNS CLUB Easter Parcels Working together with Friends of the Lions, members of Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions Club organised and distributed 77 Easter parcels to senior citizens in Peacehaven, Newhaven, Denton and Seaford. Lions President Gloria Lazarus said: “This is an annual event for the Lions Club and could not be achieved without the continued assistance of our Friends. I wish to convey my thanks to everyone concerned for their time and hard work in putting together and delivering the parcels to those most vulnerable within our community. “
Seaford Half Marathon - Sunday 9th June 2013 NP&S Lions Club, with the help of Seaford Striders, are once again organising the above charity event; all proceeds from this event go into helping local good causes in the Seahaven area. This is open to runners, joggers and walkers and for the first time this year timing and race results will be compiled by using electronic tagged race numbers. The route around Seaford will take in some of the spectacular views over the Weald from the South Downs as well as the beautiful Downland Village of Afriston and the Cuckmere Valley and is about 95% off road. If you have a favourite charity you wish to support then why not enter?

Old soldiers never die. Well, that is certainly true if they belong to Seahaven RAFA. After a very difficult 2012. Seahaven RAFA decided at the 2012 AGM, to stop their evening meetings. This was due to the profile of the membership, naturally male dominated, who had served in the war 70 or more years ago. However, there were many members still active enough to go out during the day and enjoy life. Conversations indicated that there was about 45 members and ex-members who would like to meet over a nice lunch and not have the hassle of organising it. The committee also looked at eligibility - to be a full member of RAFA, one had to have served full-time for a period in the RAF. But there are several grades of membership - one that has brought several members in was the spouses of ex RAF members, quite a few had indicated an interest in renewing their association with the branch. Then we found that there were close family members of those who had served and also people from other branches of the service who had no way of semi-formalising their time of service. So, the branch has decided to standardise on the format of a monthly lunch to take place on the second Thursday of the month - the next one is on Thursday 9th May. The meetings will be at 12pm for 12.30pm at either the Royal British Legion, Seaford or at the White Lion, Belgrave Road. There is an excellent two-course lunch available at a very competitive price with a choice of menu. Meals are pre-ordered a week in advance, so if you feel that you would like to be involved, please telephone 01323 898907. Close family members and people from other branches of the service are welcome. The photo above shows the Installation of the new president of Seahaven RAFA Frank Woodhurst with chairman, Ken Davies. Frank, who is 98 years young, attended the second meeting after the branch was first formed and must be the longest serving member.

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT ALFRED, LoRD TENNYSoN
Tennyson was born in Lincolnshire in 1809. He had a troubled childhood, his father being an alcoholic but he was a bright lad and escaped to Cambridge University where he published his first book of poetry at just 18 years old. His poetry caught the public’s imagination and this was recognised by the government in 1845 when he was awarded a grant of £200 a year. In 1851 Tennyson and his family moved to Seaford where they stayed for several months at Seaford House in Crouch Lane. Queen Victoria admired his work and insisted that he accept a title. He died in 1892. By Kevin Gordon Seaford Museum Summer Opening: Sundays and Bank Holidays, 11am to 4pm. Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 - 4pm. Group visits are available at other times by appointment. ‘A Tomb with a View’ is set in as sinister an old library as one is likely to come across, presided over by the portrait of a grim-faced, mad-eyed old man. A dusty lawyer reads a will (involving some millions of pounds) to an equally sinister family – one member of which has werewolf tendencies, another wanders around in a toga pretending to be Julius Caesar, a third is a gentle elderly lady who plants more than seeds in her flower-beds. By the third act there are more corpses than live members left in the cast; and what about the sympathetic nurse and the author of romantic novels – are they all, or more than, they seem to be? All is revealed as the plot twists and turns to its surprising conclusion.

NEW BooK ABoUT FoRgoTTEN SUSSEX ARTIST Some stunning colour prints of Sussex are the centrepiece of a new book celebrating an artist from Seaford who died in obscurity 50 years ago. Eric Slater won international acclaim for his woodcuts in the 1930s but stopped working after the war because of changing fashions and personal tragedy. Last year his prints went on show for the first time in 70 years at Towner in Eastbourne, attracting a new audience for his work. Now the gallery has published a book called Slater’s Sussex charting his love affair with the county and exploring his links with a neglected group of British colour woodcut artists.
Trollope. “They produce a sensation of well being; of all being right with the world. They do not confront or complicate but gently invite you to consider the landscape of Sussex afresh. The marriage of art and craft is back in fashion and few exemplify the union better than Eric Slater.” As well as featuring many beautiful images of Slater’s prints, the book suggests a seven-mile circular walk through some of the countryside which inspired this quintessentially Sussex artist. ‘Slater’s Sussex’ is available from the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne, price £15. James Trollope has worked as a television reporter in Sussex for both the BBC and ITV. He’s written for national newspapers and currently has a column in Saga magazine. As well as his book on Eric Slater, he’s co-written The Bluffer’s Guide to Cricket which has also just been published. He lives in Seaford with his partner and their two children. He can be contacted at troll@fastnet.co.uk
HILL HOUSE
BED & BREAKFAST Writer James Trollope spent nearly two years researching Slater’s life following a trail which started in London and led through Sussex to the USA. Eric Slater was the frail, only child of a successful London silversmith called Thomas Slater who died when his son was eight. Afterwards, Eric moved with his mother to Sussex, eventually settling in Seaford in 1929. During the decade up to the Second World War he was a prominent member of a group of British colour woodcut artists who adapted Japanese techniques to produce affordable, decorative art. His 1930 print of Seaford Head won a prize in California and, in 1938, he was commissioned by an American collector to make a print of Cuckmere Haven called ‘The Stack Yard’. In the intervening years Slater made around 50 colour woodcuts, most of which reflect his love of Sussex. “Looking at the best of his woodcuts is like walking into a perfectly proportioned room,” says James

oN BLATChINgToN BEACh: A VILLAgE AND ThE SEA A new book about East Blatchington and its shoreline. Many people are unaware that Blatchington has a beach. About a thousand yards of what we think of as Seaford’s seafront, from the site of the Beachcomber along to Buckle Drive, is in the parish of East Blatchington. This new book by local author Rodney Castleden is the sequel to On Blatchington Hill, and it tells the story of Blatchington’s shoreline, right in the middle of Seaford Bay. This one thousand yards of shingle has been a stage set for storms and shipwrecks, drownings and heroic rescues, smuggling, wrecking and murder. It has a surprisingly dramatic and colourful past. In 1545, the French landed here and launched an attack that was probably intended to capture and occupy Seaford – and perhaps Lewes. Previous accounts have dismissed this as a ‘raid’. But the French fleet was twice the size of the Spanish Armada, both in numbers of ships and numbers of troops, so it was a serious invasion attempt. In 1809, this same shoreline was at the centre of the Seven Ships disaster, when seven merchant ships in a convoy ran aground after a navigation error. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a fort or battery stood on the site of Bonningstedt Parade, with five (later six) big guns pointing out into the Bay to defend the coast against the French. In 1794, a substantial barracks was built beside and behind it, and it was here the following year that a notorious mutiny broke out which resulted in some savage punishments; several soldiers were punished by transportation, flogging or hanging, and two were shot in Goldstone Bottom in Hove. The battery and barracks were a large military installation and it seems remarkable that the site was completely cleared in the nineteenth century. Nothing remains – except a solitary cesspit in Edinburgh Road.
46
Just to the west of Blatchington Battery stood the Coastguard Station, with its own story of heroic lifesaving, as well as dealing with smugglers. On Blatchington Beach brings the story of the coastline up to the present day, with a shift in attitude towards the way the beach might be managed – to save the town of Seaford. There was a 100-year-long struggle to build a seawall that could withstand the huge waves that roll in across Seaford Bay, a struggle that culminated in the 1987 beach recharge project, which has saved the day. The book is 248 pages long and fully illustrated with more than 90 photos, maps and line drawings. On Blatchington Beach is on sale at Seaford Museum at £12.95. Also available from www.lulu.com or direct from Rodney Castleden at Rookery Cottage, Blatchington Hill, Seaford. Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Amazingly, we are nearing the end of our first year’s programme of films but before we go there are two films you must see! RUST AND BONE a French/Belgian collaboration stars the versatile and charming Marion Cotillard (‘La vie en Rose’, ‘Little White Lies’) and directed by Jacques Audiard who chiefly came to attention for his work on ‘A Prophet’. This is a tale of seemingly insurmountable adversity but the unsentimental treatment makes this more real-life than melodrama and though romance blossoms this film is so much more - ‘spellbinding, euphoric, raw and fearlessly romantic’. Friday 17th May, 7.30pm, Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane. THE GUARD is a comedy/ thriller from Ireland. The eponymous hero (Brendan Gleeson) enjoys wine, women and turning a blind and cynical eye until one day the FBI arrive and he’s pushed too far with plenty of banter and irony at the expense of both arms of the law. Friday 31st May, 7.30pm, Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane. In September we will be reopening for our 2013-14 season, which will be announced at the beginning of August. Subscribe to our emailed newsletter via the website, or pick up a programme at various businesses around town including the station, post office and tourist centre. Tickets from our website www. seafordcinema.org on the door or from Seaford Tourist Information Centre, Church Road.

LET ThE SEAFoRD SEVEN CoLoUR YoUR WoRLD Art comes to Seaford in seven vibrant styles on 4th May 2013, when seven of the most talented artists in the area display their work in the Arts@theCrypt art gallery. Known as the ‘Seaford Seven’, their work ranges from local scenes to foreign vistas and abstract to animals: a heady cocktail of colourful, contemplative, thoughtprovoking images. This is art from the soul, bursting and blossoming from the rich perspectives of seven different lives that together enfold more than 400 years. All members of Seaford Art Club, each of these artists draw from unique lifetime experiences. Mike Harrison was the ‘Hope’ half of comedy duo Hope & Kean - painting was his solace between shows and rehearsals and continues today; Rosemary Drysdale is an art devotee and connoisseur and is a lifelong painter: she currently teaches art to adults at the Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne; Jeremy Sales draws from a long career in professional design: a former Chartered Designer and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, form and colour are his domain; Mary Plant learned to paint in the intense heat and light of Africa and Oman before moving to England and retains her love of hot colours. A speaker of five languages she draws on her travels for artistic inspiration; Bill Burchell spent his life in aviation, in PR, engineering and latterly writing as a technical journalist, but instead of painting in words he now paints in vivid tones; Loraine Hopley produced artwork and designs for the Festival Of Britain in 1951 and has painted and designed ever since, inspired by the organic forms and colours that epitomise English scenery; Jean Fletcher is a life-long watercolourist who paints flowers with great touch and sensitivity – from English roses to Australian wattle. Such diversity of experience, observation, imagination and ability makes for striking images. Add in the sculptural influences of the local chalk-cliff coastline, the exceptional coastal light and the smooth curves of the Sussex Downs and the images they inspire are unmissable. What else would you expect from creative personalities with a lifelong passion for colourful expression? The exhibition at Arts@theCrypt in Church Street, Seaford runs from Saturday 4th to 9th May 2013. Doors open between 10:30am and 4:30pm. Admission free.

WhAT’S oN AT ThE hoP? ‘Art Trouvée’ by JanaNicole Saturday 27th April to Thursday 9th May Tues - Sat 10.30am - 5pm, Sun 12noon - 5pm, closed Mon. JanaNicole is an American artist who lives at Whitestacks in Wilmington, a curious property that began life as a village school. The pavillion in the garden is her studio, and it is here amongst the architecture and her collection of chickens, that wander freely around the grounds, that the inspiration for her new collection of paintings came about - recognising the extraordinary character of chickens. ‘These commonplace creatures are often considered more appealing as a lean meat than the handsome, beautiful, intelligent and charismatic creatures they really are’. JanaNicole trained at the California University of Northridge and the American College of Fine Art in London. She specialises in acrylic on canvas.
‘Order of Change?’ Irene Marot, Christina Reading, Stephanie Kirk and Val Everitt Saturday 11th to Thursday 23rd May. Tues - Sat 10.30am - 4pm, Sun 11am - 5pm. Closed Mon The new exhibition brings together four artists, exploring in their very different ways, particular aspects of the chaos inherent in transformation or change.
Christina Reading’s practice traces the fragile and fragmented histories of things, of people and events. It moves across different media using found materials gathered from these histories as a starting point for interpretations that explore the reverberations and relevance of these lost histories. Val Everitt’s sculptures have an elemental quality expressed through the rough, unfinished surfaces and often aggressive stands. Here change is raw and transformation takes on a physical, almost painful form.

Irene Marot, well-known as an actor, but now with painting as an important element of her practice, seeks ‘the extraordinary in the ordinary’. Her work is strongly influenced by the Downs and is focused on the feelings and energy experienced in the natural shapes around her. Stephanie Kirk starts her paintings with an image from real life that has captured her imagination, whether it is a tree, a bird or a figure seen from a distance. During the process, these images transform into colourful and

Who, WhAT, WhERE & WhEN IN MAY
AUDIENCE SPELLBoUND AT ThE SAM JoNES ShoW Comedy magician Sam Jones had his audience both spell-bound and roaring with laughter at his sold-out two-act family show at the Barn Theatre, Seaford on Saturday 9th March. The audience learned that the ‘politically correct’ term for puppets was now ‘little fabric people’ as he introduced children’s favourites baby Leo and teenager Connor in between comedy sketches and amazing magic tricks. ‘Spitting Image’ style puppet, the out-of work-actor Johnny, delighted the older generation with his ‘Roger Moore’ style deep tones and Sam showed off his ventriloquism skills with an amazingly tuneful ‘classical’ song leading into a hilarious ‘hip-hop’ send up. Sam and his producer Ben Stevens, who also takes part in the show, have an excellent performing relationship and make an ideal comedy duo.

“We can play pool without boys making comments” Keira
As spring is in full flow our youth club sessions at Mercread continue to flourish with new ideas and many young people enjoying the facilities. It is especially pleasing that our after-school clubs are a bustling hive of activity, particularly the Wednesday session.
“We do cooking and make really great stuff ” Kate
This month we are featuring the Thursday Girls’ Group, a session especially for girls in Seaford to talk about things that affect, inspire and promote young women. This feature offers an insight into what the young people take part in and enjoy at the Centre. “Seaford Girls’ Group gives us the chance to meet up in an environment where we can discuss ‘girls’ stuff ’, and organise and take part in loads of different fun activities.” “We can do dancing without being embarrassed or the boys making fun of us” Sydney “Water fights are such fun, we get soaked” Amy “It’s a great place to make new friends, or meet up with friends that aren’t in your classes at school” Hazel”
“It’s really chilled” Lauren “We can talk about anything” Flo Mercread Youth Centre has a well-established Management Committee which meets regularly to discuss issues around the club, and is proactive about including representation of young people. The Committee is continually looking for new ideas and opportunities for young people to support their personal and social development. As a small charity, we are always looking to widen our fundraising, and increase the diversity of committee by recruiting new members in order to support new and existing youth work at Centre. Keep an eye out for our new website which will give details of activities, fundraising and other opportunities - just enter Mercread Youth Centre into a search engine or look us up on facebook @ ‘Mercread Centre’. SCoRINg goALS Continued... By B.J.Kibble
I tried to avoid clocks for what remained of my life on earth, but I did know it was a free period. Chrissy found me skulking in the alley beside the gym. I told her I was training my mind for the big event. She rolled her bright blue eyes. “Oh, Paul, I picked the right guy.You know that don’t you?” “I know.” I replied, rather flippantly. “But right now, I’m not feeling too well.” She toyed with a strand of her straight black hair and studied the ground. “Real heroes always feel the pressure before they go into action. Carpet Deme.” She hugged me as though I’m soon to die. She is right. Chrissy Pasternack is always right, her mother is always right, her father is always right. I wanted to tell her that the phrase is Carpe Diem – seize the day, but my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth and my stiff lips were welded shut by her unexpected kiss. Naturally, my body turned to jelly. If you knew Chrissy Pasternack so would yours. Final period was Art. Miss Turner constructed an abattoir out of Kleenex boxes and red poster paint. She called it “The animal death house. A metaphysical image of senseless slaughter.” Whatever that means. Anyway, it doesn’t matter since most of us think she’s a sad alien. I finally decided that the rotten mess would uncannily resemble me in an hour or so. Briscoe sat behind me, taunting me about the march of time. The lesson brought out the worst in him. Suddenly, kids had splats of red paint on their clothes and hair. Briscoe got detention. Got detention! When I get to heaven, via Mrs. Turner’s slaughterhouse, I’m going to tell God that life isn’t fair. End of school. Briscoe opened the door for me to the bad boys’ class. He smiled like a hungry lion. My face was a cross between a grin and something you look like when your parents have found an old school report card you swore was lost in the mail. Mr. Partridge was the teacher who had to stay over. This was the type of man who believed all kids should be locked up until they’re thirty and then, and only then, should they be released upon society. He is not pleased with overtime. He is determined that both of us do something constructive and are suitably miserable while doing it. This man is economic with his time. I thanked him like an idiot as he shuffled paper. He gave me a thunderous look and banged the sheets on our desks. “If you don’t complete this… it’s punishment every night for both of you until Christmas is cancelled.” As Partridge walked back to his desk Briscoe nudged me. His features were torn. A terrified face like an evil guy wears

just before he dies at the end of a film. “I can’t do detention again. My dad’ll beat me. He’s always looking for an excuse.” Partridge shouted, “Shut up and get on with it.” He leaned back in his chair, his well-worn shoes on the desk and closed his eyes. I peered at the paper. It was an IQ test. I filled it in quickly. It wasn’t difficult. Even Chrissy could have done it. To my shock Briscoe shook from head to toe, his face was chalk-white. As he nervously stretched his thick arms out and then pulled them back I saw the bruising, which I used to think he got from fighting and not from his dad. I slipped him my paper. The relief on his face was a fireworks party. Partridge stood up after fifteen minutes, wrung his hairy hands and waved us forward. “Time’s up.” No doubt he wanted to go home and give pointless tests to his wife, his kids, and his pets. We placed our papers down. He frowned. “Clever pair, aren’t you.” We shrugged in unison. He let us go. Outside, Briscoe bowed his head and scuffed the floor with a heel. The squeak of rubber resounded in the deserted corridor. “You’re okay, Reed. Anytime I can do you a favor, let me know.” My heart burst in my head and I blurted, “I don’t want to fight you, but I will if I have to.” He turned to me, looking bigger than ever. “Friends then.” We shook hands. He almost crushed mine, but I smiled like a man saved from a firing squad. Through the glass double doors I saw Chrissy on the steps, chewing her nails. I grabbed Briscoe’s arm, gently. “There is one favor you could do for me.” “Name it.” “When we get near those doors, let me shove you and you run off.” He narrowed his eyes. This was a worrying turn of events, and the image of Miss. Turner’s Kleenex box massacre curdled my brain. I gave a nervous nod toward the exit and Chrissy. “My… my girl thinks I’m a hero.” “Sure, buddy.” He poked me with a gigantic finger. It knocked me back a step. “But don’t tell anyone. You gotta promise. I got a reputation.” “I swear on my new soccer boots.” He liked my answer. It all played out well. Briscoe should take up acting. He fell like a stuntman and nearly overdone it with flailing arms and loud groans before he ran off. He enjoyed the actors’ role. It was the first time I’d ever seen him laugh. Chrissy hugged me like I had returned from a foreign conflict. She told me she loved me. UGH! Then she waffled on about how easy it was for heroes to keep poodles. As I walked out the doors with her arm locked around my waist, all I saw were the crowds packed into the stadium. All I heard was the ear splitting cheers as I walked onto the field ahead of my team.

Gary stood at the school gate, wide-eyed with a mouth full of leftover sandwich. He looked surprised, as if he’d expected a cripple. I told him I didn’t want to talk about what happened since it was too horrific. I swore them both to secrecy. Chrissy thought this a heroic and mature approach and expected no less of me. She even said she would try to like soccer. I glanced back. Briscoe waved at me and then slapped Lemming on the head. When, and if, I can get away from my international soccer career, I’m gonna go see Briscoe at a theatre, or take in his latest film. I hope his dad recognizes the talent his son has and gives him a break. I hope Gary realizes what he is doing to his body, and gives himself a break. I hope Chrissy sees what sort of guy I am, and gives me a break. Every budding hero needs a break, occasionally.

BUTTERFLIES oF SEAFoRD & SURRoUNDINg AREA May With the arrival of May comes the feeling that summer has finally arrived. The butterfly species that started to emerge in March and April will by now have built up their numbers and with several more species now appearing, the downland slopes become alive with activity.
The countryside surrounding Seaford is one of the best places in Britain to see the Wall Brown butterfly. This is a species that has declined enormously in many parts of Britain, but around Seaford numbers have held up and even increased in recent years. The butterfly has 2 broods each year, the first brood starts to emerge just before the end of April with most being on the wing halfway through May. A bigger brood is then on the wing from the middle of July through August. Occasionally a N I Csmall 3rd brood is seen in October. C The L Ibutterfly N I C is seen

on warm sunny days basking on downland footpaths or bare patches which attract warmth. It is very much a sun loving butterfly. Windover Hill, Bo Peep, High and Over, Birling Gap and the Ouse Estuary Project footpaths are all good places to find this species. The Small Copper is another species found on the Downs in early May. This is a beautiful small butterfly which is often found on low scrub and short grassland. The males are very territorial and will fly up to any passing insect to investigate and fight any other male that come into their territory. Four different species of blue butterfly appear during May on the downs. The Small Blue, Adonis Blue, Common Blue and the Brown Argus can all be found locally. The Small Blue is the smallest British butterfly and is found in small localised territories where its foodplant of kidney vetch is found. The brightest of the blue butterflies is the Adonis Blue; the male is a beautiful iridescent blue that is startling on a sunny day. The Common Blue has declined greatly in number in recent years but it is still the most frequently seen blue butterfly as it is found in many different terrains. Despite its name the Brown Argus is a member of the blue family although the top wings are brown with orange dote near the margins. The underwings however are very similar to Common and Adonis Blue. Chalk downland is an extremely important habitat to the blue butterflies and the area around Seaford is perfect for them with the close-cropped grasses allowing the vetches to grow that are vital to the butterflies. With the summer now here look out for these and other species of butterflies. Do YoU BELoNg To A FLoWER CLUB? “I don’t do flowers.” The smartly dressed woman with panic in her voice and fear on her face stepped away from me as if I had the plague! Contrary to her misconception flower clubs do not insist on members or visitor “doing” i.e., arranging flowers. No one is greeted at the door with a few flowers and told to arrange them! It is entirely possible to come and watch highly talented arrangers demonstrate their art and never touch “Oasis”! However, take three daffodils, cut their stems into different lengths and place them with a few leaves or flowering twigs into a vase and voilà, you are a flower arranger! Flower Arranging Clubs were started initially after WW 2 as an inexpensive way to brighten homes in an age of austerity (does that sound familiar?). People met in one another’s homes to exchange ideas and socialise while putting garden flowers into vases. They shared a love of flowers and the beauty of God’s creation.
arranged. These are great social events with much chatter and laughter. Refreshments are served at the meetings giving ample opportunity to make friends. Other meetings may include an interesting speaker and a slide show and the club also goes on outings. Every year we support a charity and raise money at the monthly meetings as well as at events such as selling cream teas and by organising garden parties. For 2013/2014 our chosen charity is the Sussex Air Ambulance. The Afternoon Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month (excepting in January) at 2pm for 2.30pm in St. Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford. The annual membership is £23 and visitors are always made welcome for £4.50. For more details contact 01323 873162. Membership is open to men and women of all ages, so don’t be shy, come and see us.
Seaford Afternoon Flower Club is affiliated to NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies, where we join 70,000 other enthusiasts who love flowers and floral art. Seaford is fortunate to have an evening flower arranging club too. At most club meetings, demonstrators illustrate their art whilst entertaining the group and giving out handy tips. Their arrangements are then raffled at the end of the meeting. If anyone wishes to try any of the techniques demonstrated at the meetings, workshops aimed at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels can be

BEREAVED DAD DoES 50 ChALLENgES To MARK 50Th Kevin Lower owner of Stafford Road Garage in Seaford, decided to celebrate his 50th birthday by combining two of his passions: motorsport and fundraising. ‘Fifty@50’ was Kevin’s pledge to participate in 50 motorsport events in his 50th year. He completed a range of sprints, hill climbs and autotests at National, ‘B’, and clubsport level and raised an amazing £6,135.47 for Demelza children’s hospice. On the lead up to his big day Kevin’s family were not rushing to the shops to buy him presents, nor booking trips away online, but instead spending hours working together to create the promotional and administrative resources necessary to launch his ‘Fifty@50 challenge’. The events ranged from Mallory Park in Leicestershire, Brands Hatch and Lydden Hill in Kent, Goodwood in Sussex, Crystal Palace in London and Snetterton in Norfolk, amongst others. Kevin is a member of many motor clubs in the South of England, including; Eastbourne & Ram, 7 Oaks and District, Farnborugh and District and Tunbridge Wells Motor Club. All costs were covered by Stafford Road Garage, i.e. they funded the actual events, so that all sponsorship money came straight to Demelza.

JoIN ChESTNUT TREE hoUSE FoR A 10-MILE MIDNIghT WALK UNDER ThE STARS! Join us for a ladies’ night out with a difference on Saturday 18 May! Night to Remember is an annual midnight walk for ladies of all ages, in aid of Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Registration is open now at www. nighttoremember.org.uk/cth. This year we will be celebrating Chestnut Tree House’s 10th birthday, and what better way to celebrate than a 10-mile walk under the stars in Eastbourne with your friends and hundreds of other ladies? Over the past three years, over 1,500 ladies have taken to the streets and seafront of Eastbourne and have raised a collective £200,000 for Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex.
Kevin said, “This charity is very close to my own heart. Their motto is: To add life to days when days can’t be added to life and they were particularly supportive when my son Toby was ill and passed away in 2004.”
The walk will start at the Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne and registration is just £15 per person, which includes a ‘Night Pack’ (our exclusive Night to Remember T-shirt, torch and medal), fundraising pack, and refreshments en route.
Demelza Community Fundraiser Julie Brett said: “I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Kevin as I’m thrilled with the phenomenal amount of money that he has raised for us. This was an amazing challenge – especially with all of the early morning starts! I’d also like to thank all of the sponsors who kindly donated so generously to our

INNER LANDSCAPES WORKSHOP Your Path in Life Towards the end of October last year, as the days grew shorter and colder and the gloom of winter lay ahead, I decided to embark on an Inner Landscapes workshop entitled ‘Your Path in Life’. I’ve always been interested in health and well-being and looking after myself, so I thought a two-day retreat would give me the opportunity to step away from my busy life and take a look at where I’m going with it. The retreat took place at the Deans Hotel in Alfriston in the heart of the South Downs and the group met on the first evening, for an introductory chat and meal. All nerve-racking stuff, but after a warm welcome from Barry Winbolt, the facilitator, and our introductions to the others in the group, out of the way, I began to relax. This first session involved an initial discussion with the group and pair-work, in preparation for the two days ahead. An enjoyable and sociable evening meal followed. The first morning workshop in the Garden Room began with group discussions, exercises involving interaction, and an experiment in awareness. After a coffee break we undertook our first mindfulness walk out on the South Downs, which I thoroughly enjoyed - it was great to be taking time out to enjoy the wonders of nature, without feeling guilty about it and knowing also, that it was doing me some good. Following a delicious lunch, we commenced the afternoon sessions by sharing our experiences of the walk which proved to be very interesting. Barry’s calmness, empathy and expertise enabled us to feel comfortable doing this. We also undertook an interesting visual and journalistic exercise outside in the grounds which turned out to be a very revealing one for me. Once again we were encouraged to reflect and share our thoughts and the day ended here with some work to take home.

Day two and I was looking forward, with some trepidation, to more personal and self-revelations. The mindfulness walk on the Downs was a much longer one this time, which gave us more space for thoughts and reflections. We were by now, more familiar with each other, so the daunting task of sharing our thoughts and experiences afterwards was getting easier. With further exercises and discussions in the afternoon, ideas for our own personal development started to take shape and the last exercise outdoors, exploring nature which I very much enjoyed - paved the way for me to a deeper understanding and clarity of my life and what is important to me. As the workshop drew to a close, we gathered together the exercises, our experiences and our personal development tools and acknowledged the friendships we had made over the two days. Did the workshop meet my expectations? Yes and more. On reflection I felt more energised, calmer and focused but above all I recognise the significance of nature in my life and being aware of it. I now look forward very much to my walks through the park that I take on my way to work. Fran Tegg The next Inner landscapes event is on May 31st. UNDERSTANDINg MENTAL hEALTh Whether someone is experiencing anxiety and stress, depression, addiction, phobias, panic attacks or trauma, having some understanding about these conditions can often help. I hope this month’s article on “Anxiety”will enhance understanding of this distressing condition.
ANXIETY We all need to experience some degree of anxiety at times - it would be unnatural not to feel any of its symptoms, such as racing pulse, dry mouth, sweatiness and shallow breathing, just before a big speech or exam, for instance - as it helps get us motivated to act. But excessive anxiety causes problems. Excessive anxiety may develop gradually, starting, perhaps, with loneliness after the loss of a loved one; being too shy to make new friends when moving somewhere new; experiencing unwelcome life changes because of chronic illness and pain; or feeling loaded down with too much responsibility - all cases of unmet emotional needs. For some people, anxiety can develop suddenly, after they are caught up in some tragic disaster, such as a fire or a crash, or are the victims of violence, and their lives become ruled by fear. (This is known as post-traumatic stress.) Anxiety may also take the form of obsessions, compulsions, phobias or a nagging feeling of foreboding - all of which are attempts to ward off a sense of threat. Yet, as we know, some people face such circumstances without becoming overly anxious, while others end up almost crippled by anxiety. How we explain the negative events that happen to us has a considerable bearing on whether we are likely to suffer from excessive anxiety. Three particular types of thinking are especially connected with its development and its close partner, depression: how personally people take events (they think everything is their fault or that they didn’t get the job because they weren’t good enough, rather than because the competition was particularly stiff); how pervasive they think the effects will be (if they lose their job, they think everything in their world is going wrong, even though their relationship is still strong and they have their health, good friends, etc); and how permanent
80
(they will never get another job, partner, dream house like that one, etc). People who suffer badly from anxiety also tend to have a lot of negative thoughts running through their minds that they don’t even notice (“I’ll never cope”; “It’s going to be awful”, “no one likes me”) and commonly catastrophise (“I’m going to be late. My boss will sack me!”) Changing negative self-talk and challenging catastrophic thinking help lower stress levels. Another major cause of troublesome anxiety is negative over-imagination. Anxious people tend to spend a lot of time worrying “What if?” coming up with a whole variety of dreadful outcomes for themselves or their loved ones. This keeps them in a constant state of high emotional arousal and can take the extreme forms of phobias or obsessive-compulsive disorders. Learning to use the imagination positively - by calmly rehearsing mentally tried and tested techniques (such as deep breathing and distracting thoughts) for dealing with feared or worrisome situations - is very effective. Calming ourselves down, when anxious, is extremely important because high emotional arousal makes us stupid. We literally can’t think straight and that makes the situation worse. Human givens practitioners can show people how to relax, so that they can bring their own arousal and stress levels down, and how to use their imaginations positively, to rehearse successful outcomes instead of bad ones. They can also help people overcome phobias, panic attacks and traumatic memories quickly and painlessly. And, very importantly, they will encourage people to find ways to reduce their stress and also focus outwards on fulfilling activities (maybe involving the wellbeing of others as well as themselves) - excellent ways of getting their own needs met. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact 01323 897287 or email lynda3hg@hotmail.com

Regular readers of Seaford Scene will have noticed that we have listened to our visitors and renamed ourselves Seaford Community Garden. Formerly known as the Exchange, relating to the view of the telephone exchange building seen over the high wall at The Crouch, this was thought to be a bit obscure, so, ‘community’ being what we’re about, no one took much persuading to change the name. In fact a few weeks ago we were a textbook example of how a community should work – think an ant colony or a beehive – with so many integrated activities going on. For instance, while Iain, Jordan and Andrea dug and levelled a couple of beds and barrowed the soil away, Bob took the earth and sifted it to use on vegetable beds that he was preparing. Soil that was surplus to requirements was tipped onto what is known as the pumpkin pile because that is where they will be grown for the lantern procession at Hallowe’en. Meanwhile, in the polytunnel onions were being sorted for planting out in the prepared veg beds. And all the while Katie was asking for opinions on what summer fruit to plant and where, an issue that was resolved over tea and biscuits: strawberries – to be grown in straw in a slightly raised bed – blackberries and red currants will be cultivated.
and Sunday, 4th and 5th May for the children’s football festival and again on Sunday 23rd June when we shall be one of nine gardens open for the Mayor’s Trail. See you here! The Garden Team Photos: The entrance to Seaford Community Garden has been spruced up. Below: Richard by the wildlife pond which inspired his booklet.
Green Waste Recycling Service
The following week saw Dan, Mike and James cutting and laying liner over the soil that had been levelled previously, and Andrea, Iain, Jordan, Jimmy and Richard transferring shingle through the Crouch to the entrance beds beside the newly paved path, where it was raked over. And here thanks are due to local builder Richard Gillman who cut corner slabs to widen the path for wheelchair users. All this work is making the entrance to the garden much more attractive, and visitors are now greeted with a weekly description of a particular plant, so when you come to see us on Wednesday mornings, whether to buy from the sales table or just to enjoy the garden, look out for Jan’s flower of the week and also pick up a leaflet about the wildlife pond written To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

s it worth investing in a greenhouse? Of course the answer is yes! So where do you start? Firstly decide how big a greenhouse you would like and where to put it. My advice is to buy the biggest and best that you can afford. It is a long-term investment and should give many years of service. The minimum should have a length of six feet but do look at eight to ten feet or more if you can. It’s surprising how you will soon want more space. Next you must decide where to put it. Wherever possible run the ridge in an east to west aspect. Try to get the maximum

Bamboo is a member of the grass family and is suitable for most types of garden. It adds an exotic touch with a hint of the tropics. Its green foliage and coloured stems will add brightness to the garden even during winter months. However, one note of warning: some bamboo varieties can become extremely invasive so
amount of sunshine during the day. Do not position under trees and keep well away from the shade of hedges or high walls. Then think about what you intend to grow. If it’s vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers then allocate them sufficient space to grow. If you wish to concentrate on pot plants then perhaps you need plenty of shelves instead. The main item you will need is a good size potting bench. Consider whether you will need electricity. With electricity you can have heating all year round plus additional propagators and fans. What should it be made of? The
most popular is aluminium. These tend to be less expensive, are mostly maintenance free and easier to repair. However, wood is a more attractive material, generally using teak or cedar. These will need treating every few years. Before you buy, do your homework. Visit several local garden centres and look at their displays. Talk to your friends or neighbours about theirs, and finally get a good selection of brochures and books to look through. I’m sure you won’t regret the decision to purchase one and it will open up a new interest in your garden.
must be grown only in large heavy pots. It is said the bamboo is the fastest growing of all plant species. It will make an excellent windbreak or a screen to cover an untidy wall or fence. Bamboo comes in four different sizes - dwarf, small, medium and giant. It grows from rhizomes and the main stems are called culms. Many varieties are hardy in the UK but their rhizomes do appreciate some protection during winter months. Cover rhizomes with a
good layer of organic compost in late autumn. Protect pot grown plants by raising them off the ground with pot feet or bricks. Surround the pot with several layers of bubble-wrap so the root ball does not freeze. Plant new pot plants using a good generalpurpose compost mixed with added grit to aid drainage. Feed regularly with Miracle Grow during summer months and keep well watered so plants don’t dry out. Mike Parker

Ray Hale, our speaker for the March meeting gave a very interesting talk entitled ‘A Stroll Down a Country Lane’. Ray is a qualified health and safety officer but his true life’s pleasure is being a naturalist. He has travelled the world with his wife, searching for species - spiders are his pet love! In fact he breeds tarantulas and found a few new species on his visit to Borneo. Spiders aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but they’re certainly very clever little creatures. Ray also takes a lot of phonographs in the Sussex wildlife reserves; the Cuckoo Trail and in Abbotts Wood. He has photographed 102 out of the 850 species of spiders, His talk began with plants and flowers of the countryside, which are important for wildlife, i.e. the bramble and it’s berries which provide food for birds and insects during the winter along with their flowers that produce nectar. Insects and beetles came next, featuring the ladybird, which is sadly being killed off by the yellow and black harlequin. Ray’s favourite insects to photograph are the damsel and dragonflies. He showed us that even the wasp has it’s purpose as a recycler! Butterflies are in decline, due to the wet summers and cold springs but we can help by growing plants for them such as buddleia and nettles. Birds were the next subject with photos of the black and white magpie and my favourite, the barn owl. Look out for hedgehogs nesting in pampas grass, before burning it in the spring! He talked about a white colony of squirrels that are nesting at Hampden Park, along with badgers and foxes. His talk ended with his photo of a spider found in Borneo - it had 450 babies around it! A very interesting and informative talk which kept us all enthralled. Anne Silk Our next talk on Wednesday 29th May, will be by Mrs Barbara Echlin at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, entitled ‘Edible Gardening.’ Please use the entrance door opposite Tescos. Visitors are welcome for a fee of £2 or you can join for a yearly fee of £10 there are no extra entry charges and refreshments are available. We hope to see you then. For more information phone Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or go to the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. Seaford in Bloom Soup, Spud & Pud Lunch & Golf Day
This year the event is jointly sponsored by The White Lion Hotel, Barwells Solicitors, Tomsetts Distribution Ltd, Swindells LLP, David Jordan Estate Agents and JXP Consultancy. Teams of FOUR are required and tickets are priced at £120 per TEAM (£30 per person). This includes coffee and a bacon roll on arrival, 18 hole Golf Competition and a fish and chip supper.
Despite the atrocious weather, the worst that we’ve ever experienced for this event, 50 Seafordians managed to struggle through the ice and snow to enjoy the home made soups, potato fillings and delicious desserts.
All money raised will go towards the floral displays in Seaford. To obtain entry forms and further details about this event, please contact A W Bradbury on 01323 899408.
Together with the well-supported raffle, £400 was raised towards the floral displays in Seaford.
Judging of the 2013 Seaford in Bloom Floral competition will take place on Tuesday 9th July and anyone with a garden, hanging basket or floral container is encouraged to enter. Entry forms can be downloaded from www. seaford-sussex.co.uk/sib and will soon be available from Fotobox, Broad Street and the Tourist Information Centre, Church Lane.
“A Golf Day for Seaford in Bloom will take place at Blatchington Golf Course on Wednesday 18th May.
Open Gardens Day is on Sunday 14th July and full details will be published nearer the event.

A SUMMER oF ChARITY gARDENS oPENINg IN SEAFoRD Visit seven, new open gardens! This summer, Seaford garden visitors are in for a real treat. In addition to the inevitable old favourites, Geoff Stonebanks from Driftwood, 4 Marine Drive, has inspired the owners of seven new gardens to open up their private gardens for different charities across the summer months. The first, Roger and Jane Bullock’s wonderful garden, an integration of flowers, fruits and vegetables at 1 Buckthorn Close, will start the ball rolling, one of a combination of five gardens opening
for the National Gardens Scheme over the weekend of the 15th and16th June. It will also open on the 23rd June for the Mayor’s Garden Trail when a further three, never before opened gardens, will be on show. Helen and Dave Roberts at Wyndover, Chyngton Lane North are opening their stunning plot overlooking the South Downs National Park. Helen said she was inspired by Driftwood and lots of friends to open up. Joining them will be Sheila and David Thomas of 14 Lullington Close; their garden nestles at the bottom of Seaford Head. Then there is the wonderfully colourful courtyard garden of David Ward and Jonathan Milne at 11 Steyne Road, not to be missed. There will be a total of nine gardens open in Seaford for this trail. On 30th June there will be a double opening for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Debbie Hibberd
will be opening 4 Sunningdale Close, where the sound of water helps create a feeling of tranquility, along with Geoff ’s own awardwinning garden, Driftwood. Then there are another three new gardens in Seaford opening for the Macmillan Coastal Trail, which takes place over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th August, when 20 gardens from Brighton to Eastbourne will be on show. Amongst them will be 27 Rookery Way and Martin Neil’s ongoing experiment to discover what will thrive in a coastal garden. Martin said, “after years of visiting other peoples gardens, I began to think I could do this!” Joining him will be Loretta Nolan’s lovely garden at 10 Victor Close, which has opened before, but quite a few years ago! So, for the seasoned
garden visitors in Seaford this summer, break away from the norm and go and visit some new gardens at these events, but more importantly in so doing, raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, St Wilfrid’s Hospice and the NGS, whose main beneficiaries are Macmillan and Marie Curie. 01323 873357 07527 722589 TWo SISTERS AND A FUNERAL! ‘Two Sisters and a Funeral’ is a Christian Musical telling the story of Lazarus, who was miraculously raised from the dead by Jesus. It’s the perfect evening out for Ascension Day (Thursday May 9th) or Friday 10th. The songs will be new to most people and the impact the action has on Lazarus’ family and neighbours is the thrust of the story. The show is written by Roger Jones, well-known internationally for a range of Christian music and teaching. Also featuring are the two sisters of Lazarus, Martha and Mary, and Jesus himself is portrayed by the other lead vocalist. It lasts for one hour twenty minutes, commencing at 7pm at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road. It will be followed by refreshments. There is no admission charge but there is a retiring collection for production costs and local charities. Frank Parker, who played on the theme tune for “Dad’s Army”, directs and plays for the event with other local musicians.
96
All parts are played by members of the Seaford Baptist Church Concert Choir, and guest singers from other Seaford churches. The thirty-strong choir have really enjoyed the challenge and experience of undertaking intensive rehearsals and the quality of the sound they are now producing is enchanting. Frank Parker said, “No one who hears the songs and listens to the narrative will fail to be moved by the music and words of these wonderful songs. It is a ‘must-see’ event.” The Concert Choir regularly sings at Seaford Events, including their highly acclaimed Diamond Jubilee Concert last year for the Queen’s Anniversary Celebrations. They also guest at the stately home, Great Dixter.

SEAFoRD KURLERS Don’t hold your breath but it is now summer! Let’s hope that it is a good, hot British one. At the time of writing this article, it is freezing cold and tomorrow is the start of British Summer Time. No matter what the time of year or the temperature, it is always time to have some active fun. That’s what the members of Seaford Kurlers will be doing. We had hoped to be going to Portsmouth on April 11th; however we learned that the existing Mary Rose Museum is about to close and the new museum will not be open until the end of May or start of June so we will be rescheduling the visit. Meanwhile we will be doing our stuff and playing New Age Kurling. If you do not know what the game is, come down to the sports centre and have a look at us in full swing. We meet every Tuesday at the Downs Leisure Centre in the sports hall. We begin at 2pm and finish at 4pm with a break for refreshments half way. Your first visit is free and subsequent visits are £2.50 a session. There is an annual subscription of £5. Now, it must be time to go outside and enjoy the gardening - more exercise. Let’s face it, not much got done this last winter – far too nasty to venture out. Contact Mrs June Wood on tel. 01323 895376 email sally1989@tiscali.co.uk

Running Commentary... A few weeks ago I caught the bus from the Town Centre to Friston Pond, then began running back home through the forest. The trees were beginning to fill with fresh green leaves and the dappled sunlight lit up a yellow carpet of celandine on either side of the twisting path. There was loud, excited birdsong all around, and somewhere not far away I could hear the unmistakable sound of a woodpecker. Then I listened to my rhythmic stride pattern while running over firm ground and then across a blanket of dried leaves as I ran wide of the path to avoid a muddy patch. It briefly sounded different but the rhythm stayed the same. I slowed as I approached one of the gravelled forest tracks and stopped to let a farm vehicle cross the path. As I resumed running again it was crows high up in the trees squawking their heads off that caught my attention, and then human voices… a small family group, quietly chatting and giggling, walking towards me. I reached the Exceat Farmhouse buildings and soon crossed the Cuckmere River, then, not being in any hurry, I walked up the hill and mused over the beauty of the forest and the Cuckmere Valley, and reflected on the pleasant sounds of nature that were with me all the way from the pond. For a few moments I felt sorry for those runners who wear earplugs and carry a music system who would have missed out on the fuller picture of the joy of running free. I know it suits some runners to be plugged into music during their training runs and races so it is interesting to note the increasing number of race organisers who want the use of personal stereos excluded from races. Losing your awareness of passing traffic or cyclists and other runners on your path, and missing out on the value of the camaraderie amongst runners, make a strong case to encourage runners to reconsider their use of music to help pass the time while running. There is, of course, no right or wrong answer to this issue… just consequences, and no doubt this will continue to be a matter of personal choice. For those who have recently taken up running, you will find the coming months the ideal time for increasing

the distance you run and raising your basic speed too. It needs to be a gradual process to avoid running on tired legs, and hopefully, be dominated by off-road running. A useful aid to getting the most out of your local natural environment would be the Ordnance Survey Explorer Map No 123 which covers Seaford, Newhaven, Ringmer, Heathfield, Hailsham and Eastbourne. It will enable you to open up new training routes and therefore raise enjoyment levels a notch or two. With minimal use of pavements but plenty of footpaths you can easily reach Wilmington and Windover Hill or run off-road to Alfriston then on to Firle, up to the South Downs Way then towards Bo Peep car park before returning to Seaford. On the racing front this month there are a host of 5-mile and 10km races to choose from but if you feel at all greedy, then you should consider doing the ‘triple’, which comprises the East Grinstead 10miles, The Haywards Heath 10-miles and the Burgess Hill 10-km on the 4th, 5th and 6th of May. They are predominantly off road and could be muddy! They’re well organised and combine to add up to a marathon distance. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

NEW MEMBERShIP AT SEAFoRD goLF CLUB FairWay Membership
Seaford Golf Club in Firle Road recognises that people in the prime of their life are often the busiest with jobs, mortgages and children. So a new category of membership has been designed to reduce the cost of golf just when it is most needed. Called “FairWay Membership” it has tiered prices from £300 to £850 and gives all the benefits of a full golf club membership including a 15% discount off food and drink at the bar – so the 19th hole becomes as attractive as the superb quality 18-hole golf course.
