Welcome Welcome to the September issue of Seaford Scene. So, with the Olympics out the way, we’re now in the swing of the Paralympics (I didn’t manage to get tickets for that either!) Weren’t the Olympics amazing though and didn’t we do well!? What a great sense of achievement all round - onwards and upwards, I say! This month we feature some Seaford residents who were personally involved in the London Olympics as well as lots of local news stories, charity fund-raising events, along with music, arts and theatre shows; more details on the What’s On pages, 98 to 103. September 21st sees the gala opening of Seaford’s New Community Cinema, page 10, and there’s a free open-air concert at the Salts Recreation Ground on 9th September, raising awareness for The Base. Enjoy!

Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day Success The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day took place on Sunday July 15th, and for the fifth year running was sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents. For once the rain stopped and the wind dropped, which resulted in one of the best-ever Seaford in Bloom fundraising events. More than 320 people visited the nine beautiful open gardens - a record 160 cream teas were sold - and this, together with plant sales and sponsorship, resulted in a fantastic sum of £2,300 being raised towards the floral displays in Seaford. The generosity of the sponsors, the kindness of those who opened their gardens and the enthusiastic support of everyone who visited is greatly appreciated by SIB Chairman Isabel Stephenson and her committee as it makes all their hard work worthwhile. Thanks also go to all those who volunteered to ‘sit on the gates’ - or donated the excellent quality plants for sale - and we are very grateful to ‘The Bourne Chorus’ who, for the first time, added a well-received musical note to the proceedings when they performed at the Barn House during the afternoon. New venues are always being sought to be included in this annual event and anyone who is interested in opening their garden in 2013 should contact Isabel. Full details about Seaford in Bloom, including photos of all of this year’s Open Gardens, can be found on our website at:www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sib.

Seaford Family Fun Day The Seaford Family Fun Day held at the Downs Leisure Centre on Sunday 22nd July was hailed a great success by joint organisers Wave Leisure and Seaford Town Council after glorious sunshine helped bring over 2000 visitors to the event. Performances by the Archway Choir, The Riffz and the Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra entertained the crowds and over 25 community stalls raised funds for local charities and businesses. Food stalls including a giant paella pan offered a variety of refreshments for visitors, and the Tavern In The Tent, operated by both Rotary clubs of Seaford, offered welcome cold beverages.

Seahaven Lioness Club’s Charity Golf DaY On Friday 13th July Seahaven Lioness Club chanced it’s luck by organising a Charity Golf Day at Seaford Head Golf Club. Happily it didn’t prove too unlucky a choice because the weather was mostly fine (an achievement this summer), though the blustery conditions were quite challenging for the golfers. In addition to a round of golf, with prizes and trophies in various categories, the players had coffee on arrival and a buffet lunch in the clubhouse afterwards. Drinks and homemade cakes were on offer at the 12th tee, giving the golfers a boost to help them up the steep hill! This year’s tournament was raising funds for the Sussex Air Ambulance and the entrance fees and the raffle, which the golfers always support very generously, raised a total of
CHARITIES BENEFIT FROM GARDEN PARTY More than £2500 was raised at a recent garden party for Newhaven Lifeboat and Water Aid. Over 250 people enjoyed a sunny afternoon listening to the music by the Seaford Silver Band while enjoying a cream tea. A variety of stalls including plants, bric a brac, tombola, lots of lovely cakes and a raffle were part of the attractions. The organisers would like to thank everyone for their donations and support. The attachment shows Derek Payne receiving his raffle prize from Hattie Heppner Logan. Photo by Gary Carter.

almost £1000. At the end of the day Lioness President Audrey Clarke and Seaford Head Golf Club Captain Alan Pye presented the prizes and trophies to the winners.
The Lionesses are most grateful to Len Fisher of Seaford Head Golf Club, without whose expertise and support the event would not be possible. Thanks must also go to David Jordan Estate Agents, Prestige Promotions of Newhaven
and Wave Leisure for sponsorship and to the following for donation of raffle prizes: Deans Place, Alfriston, Coopers Funeral Directors, Intersport, Tony Osborne Financial Services and The Old Boot. While this was the Club’s main event recently the regular Saturday bric-a-brac stalls in Seaford continue as ever – surprisingly few have been missed due to bad weather, so do come and seek out a bargain! There has also been a coffee morning and mini-market at Peacehaven Meridian Centre, and the Lionesses had stalls at Newhaven Lifeboat Fete (raising money for the Lifeboat) and NPS Lions Peacehaven Donkey Derby. Two members were involved as volunteers at the Olympics – one as a driver and one performing in the opening and closing ceremonies. AVOID STICKY SITUATIONS – JAM MAKING IS EASY with Seaford Home Hardware
I’ve been blessed with an abundance of succulent fruit in the garden this year, and my local hedgerows are also brimming with ripened berries, so it’s time to make use of nature’s larder and make some home-made tasty jam. As with most forms of the culinary arts, there are a few items of equipment that will make light of the task in hand and secure your chances of success. Pop in to see us at Seaford Home Hardware where you’ll find our in-store display of pans, jars, utensils and accessories that are invaluable not only for making jam but marmalades and chutneys too.

Most preserving pans are suitable for use on solid plate (Aga-type) ranges as well as gas, halogen, ceramic and induction hobs, but do check with us when you buy to make certain that the pan is right for your appliance. Never ever use aluminium pans for jam making. Acids in the fruit react with the metal and give your jam a tinny taste.
A good-quality preserving pan will always be better than any saucepan. Manufactured from stainless steel with a wide flat bottom for even heat distribution (a key element in successful jam making) it will incorporate a
Temperature is everything. You need to cook jam quickly and evenly – hence the preserving pan, but you also need to know when it reaches its optimum setting point. So do invest in a jam thermometer to cut out the guesswork.

Jam is essentially three ingredients – fruit, sugar and water. The rest is down to alchemy and the proliferation of recipes you can find in all good cookbooks and on the web. With the right equipment you can make great use of nature’s bounty. So come and see us at 2 Clinton Place, Seaford for a comprehensive range of jam-making products and lots of good free advice.

Local Paralympian and artist Kristina Veasey invites you to ‘go Beyond the Torch Run!’ ‘Beyond the Torch Run’ is a community engagement project that is being run by local paralympian and artist Kristina Veasey, bringing together art and the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It has also been granted the prestigious Inspire Mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme, making it an official part of the Cultural Olympiad. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. ‘Beyond the Torch Run’ was inspired by the Olympic torch coming through nearby Lewes. It aims to bring the spirit of the Paralympics (friendship, participation, celebration of diversity, overcoming barriers) to those living beyond the torch run, between Lewes and Seaford, encouraging people to be proud of who they are and where they live. Through art engagement and public participation this project will also encourage those living further afield to come and explore Beyond the Torch Run. Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said “The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like Beyond the Torch Run are enabling people in Seaford to make positive life changes.’ Beyond the Torch Run was launched on Friday 20th July, exactly one week before the opening ceremony of London 2012. People of all ages and abilities are invited to help build a map through an interactive website www. beyondthetorchrun.co.uk by uploading their artwork, photos, poems, memories, songs and tweets in order to create a map that shows the area from a local perspective. The website will be available to view for two years, enabling visitors from near and far to discover the hidden gems of the area, the things not normally found on a map.
The stylised interactive map of the area is now live and local people have been sending in children’s drawings, photos and memoires including one of the Martello Tower with a flat on the roof and photos of the Peace Camp. The aim is to gather as much as possible and make it a real community-based map, so that people from Seaford, Lewes, Brighton, Eastbourne and further afield can see what’s on offer here and why they should come and explore beyond the torch run. This project also hopes to engage people in art who perhaps wouldn’t consider themselves to have an artistic nature - everyone is encouraged to join in regardless of ability, so photos taken on a phone whilst walking the Southdown Way or stunts in the skatepark are all valid. A selection of the images and words uploaded to the map and from the workshops will be featured on 1000 printed versions of the map which will be available free from local outlets. As the London Olympics have now finished and the Paralympics are underway, Kristina Veasey is full of excitment - obviously as a paralympian and torchbearer - and is keen to bring the spirit of the Paralympics to the area. “I want people to feel empowered about where they live and to show those passing through that it is well worth stopping off here! I am also very grateful to the Arts Council and to local support for the funding of this project and allowing it to become a reality! It is a non-profit making project that is free to all!” Kristina Veasey competed in the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. She won bronze medal at the European Championships in 2003, and two silver medals at the Paralympic World Cup in 2006 and 2007. Kristina moved to Seaford in 2006 where she lives with her partner and three children. She is now retired from sport but runs her own consultancy business around disability equality, www.kristinaveasey.talktalk.net and has just launched her new company Outside The Box also in that field. In addition Kristina is an artist and well known within Seaford for running community events through Seaford Family Focus Group. NATURAL ANTIAGING THERAPY? YES PLEASE! How do you fancy a new, natural approach to antiaging with immediate results? Too good to be true? Well, here’s the proof because I’ve tried it and it really does work! Marianna Dragojevic is an antiaging therapist and R J Laser representative who is based in Seaford at Haven Therapies, Saxon Lane and in Peacehaven. She offers a wide range of treatments that are non-invasive, pain and allergy free, with no side effects. Her holistic approach to anti-aging involves a unique lasertreatment, combined with a natural face lift massage. This cold laser treatment has been developed by R J Laser, the market leader in non-invasive laser therapy and is based on 28 years of experience in the production and application of medical lasers. Marianna explained that it is an effective pain-free alternative to conventional methods, that doesn’t involve injections or cutting and the skin also benefits from the treatment, unlike surgical methods, which can damage it. The therapy combines the application of Hyaluronic acid, a product that we already secrete in our bodies, with the laser treatment. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for stimulating the body’s production of collagen: the protein that makes the skin elastic, and look and feel young. Unfortunately as we get older, we start to lose the hyaluronic acid in our bodies and as a result our collagen production reduces and the skin becomes less elastic and wrinkles appear. This treatment, which does not cause any damage to your skin, releases energy which encourages the hyaluronic acid to stay in the body longer, resulting in more collagen production, improved skin elasticity and instant firmer, smoother, fresher and youngerlooking appearance. One of the benefits of this cold laser treatment is that there are no negative side-effects such as redness or swelling and in fact the skin’s appearance will improve even more over time. Marianna explained that the treatment also rejuvenate every cell on the face, neck and decolletage, rather than just specific areas. A series of up to six treatments, each lasting 60 minutes, is recommended, followed by maintenance treatments every 4 to 6 weeks.
26
The treatment I had with Marianna was a very relaxing experience. She had advised me beforehand to drink plenty of water in the few days preceding the treatment and so lying on the couch, Marianna removed my make-up before applying the Hyaluronic acid using a spatula, which took about 20 minutes. Then, with goggles covering my eyes, she applied the laser, moving it slowly over one half of my face and then the other and I didn’t feel a thing. This also took 20 minutes. With goggles removed, she gave my face a water massage followed by a moisturising facial massage, which was very relaxing. Then the moment of truth... I looked in the mirror. Yes, I could definitely see an improvement: the skin around my eyes appeared much smoother, my cheeks looked fuller and I definitely Before and after... had a warm healthy glow. Amazing and this was only after one treatment! Imagine the improvement after more sessions! Marianna advised me to always drink plenty of water which encourages the absorption of the Hyaluronic acid. I found Marianna to be very professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She was very caring and approachable and it was clear her passion was in providing a holistic treatment that made her clients feel happy and good about themselves. The anti-aging natural face-lift massage that Marianna gives, combines a variety of techniques, which are also non invasive: Japanese Anma therapy, based on the principals of Oriental medicine, Ayurvedic massage, one of the world’s oldest medical systems, originating in India, acupressure and facial reflexology. The face-lift helps to reduce expression lines and wrinkles as well as release muscle tension in the face and jaw. It stimulates cellular activity and tightens and tones the skin and underlying muscles. It also increases the elimination of toxins. improves blood circulation and can relieve stress symptoms such as insomnia and headache. This treatment can be combined very successfully with the laser treatment.
* Marianna is currently giving Seaford Scene readers a Special Offer of 3 Laser Anti-Aging treatments and 3 Natural Face Lift Massages. All for just £300. Normal prices: Laser treatment, £110, Face Lift Massage, £45. If you would like to book a free consultation or a treatment, please contact Marianna on 07960 561874. East Blatchington Lectures The Mayor of Seaford Councillor Linda Wallraven attended the latest of the lectures in July when The Revd Dr Andrew Mayes gave a lecture on Jerusalem then and now. This was given before a packed house and was a great success. The hall was so crowded that we have decided when applicable, that the lectures will be in the church with tea and cake in the hall. Our next meeting will be on September 4th when local author David Arscot will talk on Sussex villages and how to get to them. David is famous for his guides and maps and will be selling copies of his books. On November 6th Alan Morgan will talk about sailing. This event will have a Christmas flavour and mince pies, shortbread, sausage rolls and fruit cake will be available, all included in the ÂŁ5 charge. There will also be a raffle. I have booked our speakers for next year. So far they are Peter James, Norman Baker Alan Walters and Kay Blackburn. Full details later. May I at this point thank everyone involved with these events especially the staff at Stephen Newberry, who are so good at selling the tickets. I also thank you all for supporting us. Shirley Linsell

My Olympic Experience Ted Hopkins is a Seaford resident who was one of the lucky ones, chosen to be a volunteer at the 2012 Olympic Games. Here is his story: About eighteen months ago I heard from friends that the forthcoming London Olympics were looking for volunteers to assist at the 2012 Games. I went on line and filled in the relevant application form and waited for a reply. An email arrived inviting me to go to the Excel Centre, London in July 2011 for an interview. After the interview it was just a matter of waiting to see if I was successful. Eventually I received an email inviting me to go to a Training Session in London. I was to attend on a Sunday morning and I set off from my home very early as it was the day of the London Marathon! I discovered that I was to be working at the NGA (NGA is the 02 Arena) as a member of the Events Team. This team had a multitude of jobs including meeting and greeting, queue management, securing restricted areas and showing people to their seats. My next step was to go to West Ham, London to collect my uniform and accreditation. This was a very slick operation and I collected my two shirts, two pairs of trousers, two pairs of socks, a bag with water bottle and umbrella, a cap and a watch and of course my accreditation for the Games. My Olympic Experience I travelled up to London on Friday 27th July and watched the brilliant Opening Ceremony at my digs. Saturday the 28th was the first day of competition in the NGA and I travelled by tube to start my first shift at 7.30am. On arrival all the volunteers (now called Games Makers) made their way through security which was very reassuring as every person entering was checked airport style. Having registered and had my accreditation checked against the computer data base, I collected a bottle of water and a snack. After registration it was on to briefing. This is where the jobs for the day were allocated. Each person was given a deployment card which outlined the job for the day. On the card was a number that corresponded with the team of people you would be working with. All the Games Makers then went to their different groups and received a briefing on the day’s events and the particular duties for the day.
The NGA started the first week of competition with Gymnastics, then Trampolining followed by the Basketball quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals for men and women. My first duties were to work on Spectator seating. This was a sought-after job. We spent our entire shift inside the arena. There were two sessions every day, which meant that at the end of the first session we had to assist 13,000 spectators to leave the arena, clean the area and reopen for the next session in 35 minutes. We hit our target every time. Fortunately I was in the arena when Great Britain won medals and I will never forget the support and outpouring of pride that accompanied these incredible achievements. I can always say that I was there. Day by day our jobs changed so I also had several other jobs which included working at the athletes entrance, checking their accreditation. However I think my favourite job was queue management. This involved organising the queues of spectators at the main entrance of the arena. This was a really good position as you were able to meet and greet thousands of spectators who were all so happy and excited to be going to watch sport of the highest standard. Smiles and high fives all round!!! Over three days I probably took over 1000 photographs of people who wished to have their picture taken with the Olympic Logo in the background. I believe I must have used about every make of camera in existence. I had a great experience and met many happy and excited people. The Games Makers were brilliant and everything went by very smoothly. I am very grateful for the opportunity I had of being a part in one of the greatest events in Great Britain. Thank you London Olympics 2012. Ted Hopkins, Games Maker

Running Commentary... Some people are inspired to give running a try after watching television coverage of big city events like the London Marathon. For others it will be for the fitness and well-being that running gives you, to raise funds for a special cause or perhaps because someone in your family may already be a runner…in fact, there are so many different prompts that lead people to take up running. This month’s guest contributor, John Kingshott, was once happy to be a spectator and assist at races as a Sports Practitioner until… well, I’ll let him tell his story. “It really doesn’t matter what age you are when you take up running. I was 53 and had never run in my life, until two years ago, when a good friend persuaded me to have a go. Previously I had only watched in admiration of runners enjoying themselves at the many races in and around Sussex. I was at a race organised by the Seaford Striders, it was December and in a moment of weakness I agreed to join the Club in the new year. Two years previously I’d had a freak building accident and managed to fracture my neck, which severely affected my normally fit and fast life style, so this would be a way of regaining my fitness. Firstly, I needed proper running shoes, not everyday trainers. These duly bought, I turned up at the Striders’ club night and met the Club Captain who agreed a route to see what I was capable of, which turned out to be not very far! It was one mile… not bad (I thought) for a non-runner. I returned to the Leisure Centre puffing and blowing, but hooked on running! The following week I increased my distance to 2 miles, then week by week, the distance grew and my speed gradually increased. I said I would never wear running ‘tights’ but in all fairness, they make running more comfortable, so I succumbed and also bought

In 2 years I have acquired numerous running tops (hi-viz for winter and cool ones for summer) and have more running shoes than feet! I entered my very first race – the Royal 5km Fun Run in Bexhill last April, which was gruelling, but I finished. I have now gone from non-runner to competing a couple of 5kms, a few 10kms and a 10-miler, and have now signed up for a half marathon… and will perhaps try a full marathon next year. The Seaford Striders are a friendly bunch, and a mixture of fast, medium and slow runners. All newcomers are taken under the Club’s wing and helped to settle in, with the freedom to run as fast or as slow as they like. I find that running solo or in a group helps to reduce stress and increase fitness levels, but one word of warning though, a running vest to a runner is like a telephone box to Clark Kent. You change into a different person!” I can vouch for the progress that John has made in the short time he has been at the Club and that he is now passing on what he has learnt to other newcomers. Seaford Kurlers Goodness me we are rushing headlong into autumn. Leaves are turning brown – not with the sun but with the wind that Seaford seems to attract. This does not detract from the attractions in the town. Seaford Kurlers will weather whatever gets thrown our way and will be there for Seafordians to enjoy on a weekly basis. We demonstrated the sport at Wave Leisure’s Fun Day. What a lovely day it was – so many sports and a food fest as well. Quite a few people came to view us and seemed interested. At the time of writing we are all looking forward to the Wave Leisure’s para sports day. There will be a competition involving a number of sports that are tailored to the disabled community. There will also be a demonstration by a national level disabled basketball player, Jan Haydock, who is also an active member of our own club., ane we are hoping that Eddie Kidd will be there to show his Olympic Torch. We will not be taking part in the Great Britain Kurling National Championships this year as they are in County Durham but we will have our own in-house tournament starting in October, after our AGM.

Seaford Community First Responders Receive Queens Diamond Jubilee MedalS
Seaford First Responders are very proud to announce that Adam Doughty, Tracey Wood, Sue Haren and Pete Gwilliam have each received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for their volunteer work in the Seaford area. The four have each been volunteers with the First Responder Scheme for over six years and have attended in that time around one thousand 999 calls recieved in Seaford. They have also done huge amounts of fundraising and public-awareness talks, going along to many different groups, talking about CPR and what to do if someone collapes near to you. The group currently consists of 10 members but they are always looking for new Reponders or people who want to be involved with the group in other ways. Anyone interested can contact the Responders at: www.seafordresponders.com. Photo (l-r): Adam Doughty, Tracey Wood, Sue Haren, Pete Gwilliam

local Zumba instructor in Olympic opening & Closing Ceremonies Local Zumba instructor Louise Cave has been busy with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics these last few months. Louise auditioned last year and was selected, along with 1,000 others, to be a drummer in the Industrial Revolution scene in the Opening. She was also one of the drummer marshalls whilst the athletes paraded on...drumming her plastic bucket (no expense spared) for two hours. At the Closing Ceremony, she again was one of the marshalls, keeping the athletes safe from all the cannons, fireworks, etc. Oh, and she wore a blue bowler with a light on it....! Many hours of practice in the rain paid off and the Ceremonies were a resounding success. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB At a recent meeting of Seaford Martello Rotary Club held at Seaford Golf Club President Julian Turner welcomed Gavin Fisher from Children’s Respite Trust. This is a registered charity which looks to give respite to the parents and siblings of children suffering from a range of disabilities. Their advocacy service is there to help families in need of respite support due to a child’s disability or illness and they can help by speaking to the right people, filling in forms and sometimes they can liaise with health and social care professionals. Gavin gave a very interesting talk on the work of the Trust and said that they were very pleased to announce recently that Roger Daltry CBE and Jayne Torvill OBE have kindly agreed to become patrons of the charity. President Julian then gave Gavin a cheque for £200 to help fund a break for a family. More information about the charity can be found at: www.childrensrespitetrust.org.uk

SEAFORD EXCHANGE GARDEN PROSPERS One of the many wonderful things about being a part of the Seaford Exchange garden project is the sense of contributing to the local community, and no more so that on the Sunday of the Mayor’s Open Gardens Trail when we were proud to show off our produce, plants and flowers to so many of you. People who have been living in our town for a comparatively short time may well be unaware of where we are, tucked into our walled paradise between the Peace Garden and the play area at the Crouch. We will of course be opening for next year’s Trail and were delighted to play host to the Sussex Hardy Plant Society when their members visited the Exchange during that wonderful hot and sunny week after the great rains, and also saw the lovely gardens of Aideen and Denis Jones in Sandgate Close and Lindsay Thomas in Heathfield Road. Our thanks to these green-fingered and generous people who donated their garden entrance fees to the Exchange Project.

We’d also like to thank our willing lads, Adam and Matt, who, along with Cameron and Richard, and led by Iain, have been helping us in term-time and holidays, particularly in levelling the ground for our new classroom. Their enthusiasm is contagious and we are fantastically lucky to have their assistance. We wish them all good luck and hope that we have been able to offer them some practical horticultural experience, something that is important to Matt in particular as he hopes to go on to Plumpton College to further his studies. At the time of writing we are cropping our owncompost-grown tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and chillies, so hope the late ripeners will still be available as you read this. The pumpkins planted in preparation for Pumpkin Day in October are doing promisingly well, so expect some amazing lanterns. We are also busy taking – and some of us learning how to do it – softwood cuttings of the huge variety of plants found within the garden so that we will have lots to offer at our sales table. Do drop in to see what there is on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm – and please pass on a few tips!

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. Teak Blotter Military history is always written by the winners so the Battle of Jutland in 1916 has gone down in history as a victory for the British against the might of the German fleet but in truth it was a really a defeat. Between 31st May and 1st June over 150 ships of the Royal Navy engaged a much smaller flotilla of German vessels. This was to be a battle of new technology, the Allies deploying seaplanes and the enemy, submarines. Unlike the ship-to -hip and hand-to-hand naval battles of the past this was combat at a distance with both sides relying on shelling to hit their targets. The British were led by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe in the ironclad ship Iron Duke.
Seaford Museum has a souvenir from this ship in the shape of a teak blotter which was made from wood actually taken from the battleship. Selected by Kevin Gordon

EXPLORE THE CHURCH ON THE HILL A special day rejoicing in an evocative title is to be held at one of Seaford’s oldest churches. “Explore the church on the hill” will be an Open Day at St Peter’s, East Blatchington, Seaford, on Saturday, October 6, from 10am to 4pm.
Its aim is to strip away the mystery of church by giving people time to look at the church itself, and to learn about the diverse events which are held there. There will be the opportunity to explore St Peter’s as an ancient and contemporary sacred space, with a Prayer Tree to which visitors can attach their own prayers and hopes. During the day music will be provided by the choir and organists, and there will be quiet times for reflection. Displays, in the church and the adjoining hall, will depict its fascinating history, details of various groups which meet there, and also information about the very popular lecture series. There will be examples of work by local children. As it’s Harvest weekend, the church will be full of colour and flowers.

The Rector, Canon Dr Andrew Mayes, said: “St Peter’s has been here 800 years, but we sense we’re Seaford’s best kept secret. The Open Day gives locals the chance to discover the hidden treasure of St Peter’s and find out what we get up to! “St Peter’s is a very friendly and inclusive church, and we’re really here to bring inspiration and beauty into people’s lives.” The “Hill” in the title refers to Blatchington Hill. St Peter’s is at the corner of this and Belgrave Road. Admission is free!

DAVID ALLAM, HIGH SHERIFF In this Jubilee year, as many of you will know, David Allam, who lives in Bishopstone, has been appointed the High Sheriff of East Sussex. This is a great honour for David who will do his very best to support our queen. It is also recognition of what David has done for our community over many years. Coincidently, the appointment is something of a double gold for Bishopstone in that councillor Wallraven, who lives in the village, has been elected Mayor of Seaford. David Allam is a man of many parts and wide interests. His first ambition was to be a farmer but instead he became a solicitor. His early years in a small practice gave him an insight into how people live and the problems they encounter. Later, as Justices Clerk for the Lay Magistrates in East Sussex, David became increasingly concerned about the way mentally impaired people were dealt with by the law. As High Sheriff he will have an opportunity to offer advice as to how this difficult problem might be alleviated.

David has spent a good deal of his time working as a trustee for local charities and like many others is concerned about where the money is to come from if our Prime Minister’s ambitions for a ‘Big Society’ are to be realised. He has also been involved with the South of England Show over many years. Indeed, he served as chairman for four years and before that was vicechairman when the outbreak of foot and mouth disease threatened the show’s very existence. So, perhaps foremost on his agenda as High Sheriff will be to continue to work to find ways to keep our countryside alive and prosperous. David Allam’s told me that his life has changed since his election as High Sheriff at the end of March – it has, he says, “become extraordinarily interesting but very, very busy.” Over a recent weekend David attended and participated in no less than eight events in East Sussex. These included entertaining a party of civic dignitaries in his home, presenting Jubilee Medals to Sussex Army Cadets in Crowborough and spending Sunday at the Hastings Old Market Carnival where he joined the Winkle Club. One of the highlights of David’s year so far has been in organising a very successful reception for the great work that is being done to restore Charleston’s old barns and granary to give Charleston the extra space it needs to provide a safe haven for the Trust’s remarkable art collection. Doubtless our High Sheriff will continue to do us proud. Photo: David Allam (front row, fourth from left) at the Declaration Ceremony in March 2012.

Homelink Last year I heard about Homelink, a local charity that helps the homeless with interest-free loans to cover the deposit and first month’s rent on a home. The loans can be paid back over five years and repayments are a minimum of £20 a month. Although Christian-based this charity helps anyone who is able to benefit from this kind of help. Homelink appealed to me as it is not giving something for nothing because it leaves people with their self-respect. I don’t have any personal experience of being homeless and I can’t imagine what it must be like to lose my job that I need to pay the mortgage or rent, have nowhere to live after a broken relationship, be deeply in debt or suddenly unable to work through illness. This problem is on the increase as we all know.Years ago I was moved, as I am sure some of you were, by the BBC docudrama called ‘Cathy Come Home’ where an ordinary young couple find themselves without a home. Sadly this is happening now and Homelink is trying to make a difference. Homelink was started twelve years ago by Churches Together in Lewes, Newhaven and Seaford to help homeless people, especially those who have fallen through the net and are not eligible for council help. Over thirty individual churches are involved including nine in Seaford. It is mainly run by volunteers with one paid co-ordinator. People are referred through Lewes District Council and after some form filling and an interview with a co-ordinator and trustee they are considered for a loan. In past years generous support from the council, local churches and private subscriptions have meant Homelink has been able to help most applicants eligible for a loan. Times have changed, and now an average loan is £1400, which meant last year the number of loans had to be capped. So it’s time for action! Homeless people come in many guises, those who sofa surf, sleep under Lewes bridge or under a boat on Seaford beach, live in a caravan on a work site or a tent in the forest, live in appalling conditions or with friends and relatives who don’t want them. There have been a number of fund-raising events including a concert on Good Friday by Seaford Choral Society which raised over £800. Were you there? If so you would have seen me. I was the one with the sash and the big smile blocking your exit until you put something in my basket!
Funds come in from a number of different sources as well as those mentioned. They include tenant repayment, additional grants, town councils, Sainsbury’s and the Mayor of Lewes, Councillor Michael Chartier, who has made Homelink one of his charities this year. The next fundraising effort in Seaford is going to be a fashion show put on by M&Co on the 27th of September at their shop in Broad Street at 7pm in the evening. Please come along - it promises to be a good evening. The latest autumn/winter fashions will be on show and you could be the first to wear them. As you know, where Seaford leads, the rest of the world follows. Tickets are available from M&Co and from Margaret Slattery 01273 515603. If you are interested to learn more or to help Homelink please visit: www.lewesdistrictchurcheshomelink.org.uk or contact the Homelink Office 01273 479541 Ethane Ashling-Perry

THE WILMINGTON GIANT: HE’S BACK! One of Britain’s greatest landscape mysteries is just ten minutes away. The Long Man of Wilmington is one of the biggest images of the human form in the world - the Statue of Liberty only comes up to his chest. He has been on clear view for nearly 140 years, ever since 1874, when a faint and vanishing image was outlined in white bricks. Yet no-one is sure when he was put there or why. Recently it has been suggested by Chris Butler and Martin Bell that he was made in 1550. A book first published in 1983, The Wilmington Giant by local author Rodney Castleden, reviews many of the theories and gives the case for an ancient giant. This month a new edition of the book is published: an expanded reprint with 60 additional illustrations and a new introduction. This is a book that will appeal to everyone who loves the landscape, history, heritage and lore of the Sussex Downs. Reviewers have described it as ‘charmingly illustrated and written with feeling’, ‘well researched’, ‘visionary’, and ‘a modern antiquarian classic’.

SEPTEMBER checklist
3 Start to tidy up the garden by clearing fallen leaves and old
plants. This will help prevent pests and diseases over wintering until next spring. 3 Net ponds to prevent a build up of falling leaves. Prune climbing roses after flowering. 3 This is a good month to take cuttings from roses. These should flower next year. 3 Plant up containers or large pots with spring bedding or bulbs. 3 Need a new greenhouse? This is the best time of year to erect a new greenhouse or extend an existing one. Everything will then be ready for an early spring start. 60

All experienced gardeners should be on the alert for such potential new recruits and offer help, support or guidance when required. Parents should really consider using a small area within their garden to grow fruit and vegetables. Getting the children involved can be really enjoyable, as they love to eat the fruits of their labour. Encourage friends, neighbours and family to visit local flower and horticultural shows. It’s surprising how much can be learned from just looking around these shows and talking to other visitors over a cup of tea. As well as the large Seaford Annual Show there are many others well worth a visit; these include Peacehaven, Rodmell, Alfriston, Hailsham and Eastdean. Most of them have special sections just for children.
some of these events. They are a good indicator as to which plants grow well in your area and show how your garden could look with just a little more effort and enthusiasm. It would be nice to see more youth organisations getting involved with gardening. Schools, Scouts, Guides, youth clubs and other local organisations could all consider how to get their members involved with horticulture.

PROPAGATION BY CUTTINGS
The main types or groups of stem cuttings are Basal, Soft wood, Semi ripe and Hardwood. All are taken from the current year’s growth but at different times of the year. Basal cuttings are the first to be taken early in the year. Small tender shoots appear from the crown of the plant in early spring. When two inches in length break or cut from the base with a “heel”. Transfer to a propagator if possible. Softwood cuttings are young cuttings taken early in the year from new growth before the stems turn woody and should be approximately three inches in length. They prefer humidity rather than heat. Semi-ripe cuttings are taken from shrubby plants later in summer: usually 4-6 inches in length. Stem should be woody but tip soft. Just cut below a node. Prefers warmer conditions. Hardwood cuttings are up to 6 inches in length. Take late in the year from ripe wood of the current year’s growth. Best protected in a cold frame.

JUBILEE TREE SCHEME AUTUMN 2012 We have now had about two dozen requests from residents who would like a tree in front of their house, and are working through checking to see if the sites are OK with the Highway Authority. We are also involved in three bigger schemes this autumn: TREES AT THE CROUCH: Michael will lead on this, liaising with Friends of the Crouch and the Youth Club. The Tree Group will assist and provide 20 trees, provisionally Rowan, Whitebeam, Hawthorn, Bird Cherry and Ilex Oak. We have also been kindly offered two chestnut trees. SALTWOOD/MILLBERG ROADS (Approach to Chyngton Primary) We hope to complete the pilot scheme started last autumn, and offers to take part will be delivered to residents by end of September. PRINCESS ROAD: Margery will lead on this and liaise with residents who have asked for trees. FOSTERING OF SAPLINGS: We shall be contacting people who have kindly offered to foster saplings, perhaps in 30cm (1ft) pots, and we would welcome more offers, as these trees are much cheaper but too small for street planting. Planting again in autumn. TOWN CENTRE is on our wish list, but lack of cash makes this a non-starter at present. Email contact walter.tillyard@btinternet.com

Cllr Wallraven was overwhelmed when the monies were counted. £1,013 was raised for St James’ Trust and Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group, which considering the weather and the fact it was the first annual event was incredible. Thanks too, to Norman Baker for opening the event. A special cup was presented to Mary Holland for the most commented-on garden out of the five on show. Town Clerk, Sam Shippen, said “a big thanks to Geoff Stonebanks for the vision and organisation! He did us proud!” Councillor Wallraven said “On behalf of the charities that you [Geoff] have supported through your marvellous efforts, thank you once again. Your community spirit and generosity is a rare and wonderful thing and a true inspiration to others.” So this has guaranteed the event will be repeated in 2013. Seaford Little theAtre REVIEWS
The Browning Version A high-class production of Terrence Rattigan’s ‘The Browning Version’ was performed at Seaford Little Theatre from 19th to 27th July.
With excellent direction by Margaret Kennedy, this short play, set in an English public school, revolves around retiring classics schoolmaster Crocker-Harris, known as ‘The Crock’, and described by the schoolboys as the ‘Himmler of the Lower Fifth’; a marvellous portrayal by Tony Bannister. Constant humiliation by the pupils and disregard by his wife, played wonderfully by (Sylvia Aston),
FUMED OAK
The receptive audience were not disappointed with the second instalment of the evening. An enjoyable two-act play by Noel Coward that packed a punch – a slap in fact! I say enjoyable, as the audience responded with howls of welldeserved laughter to the well-timed delivery of Coward’s witticisms but it is an unpleasant comedy. ‘Fumed Oak’ is certainly non-PC, with Coward’s wit sharpened into what could be seen as spiteful, misogynistic claws. But it is an insightful vision into an unhappy family life in middle-class pre-war England. The audience could also delight in ‘the worm that turned’ storyline.
has resulted in a pent up, emotionless Crocker-Harris. However when punished school boy Taplow, excellently played by Owen Daughtery, who in an unexpected act of kindness, gives the schoolmaster a copy of Robert Browning’s translation of ‘Aeschylus’s Agamemnon’, as a leaving present, Crocker-Harris is touched and moved by the words that Taplow has written inside the book. Unable to hold back the tears, Crocker-Harris breaks down, revealing a surprisingly sensitive side to his character, in a tear-jerking performance. However, through misunderstanding, Crocker-Harris quickly recovers from his emotions and when his philandering wife explains that she has been having an affair with the young science teacher (Damian Sutton), she and the audience are surprised to discover that Crocker-Harris had known this all along. Fine performances also by John Hamilton as Dr Frobisher, Chris Church as Mr Gilbert and Samantha Chapman as Mrs Gilbert. Credit must also be given for the excellent set design and production. Fran Tegg
become a copycat of her mother and grandmother. Simple, effective staging and Mary Young’s tight direction ensured the wellrehearsed exchanges kept up the pace, and the energy was palpable when the second Act heralded the end of their co-habiting existence. Dinner-time that same day saw Henry suitably imbibed enough to announce his secret well-planned escape. Roars of laughter from the audience greeted the moment Henry cast his unpalatable plate of cold ham on the floor. But some stifled gasps met Henry’s slap to Mrs Rockett’s incredulous face-stopping her scathing commentary on Henry’s behaviour. The audience were gripped by the crackle of tension between the two actors.
It takes comic-skill to barely utter a sound, let alone a word in the first Act and still manage to raise wry laughter from the audience, but Tony Bannister’s ‘Henry Gow’ is the said ‘worm that turns’ hero. Every long-suffering silent mannerism at the breakfast table was played with precision against the domineering posturing of formidable wife ‘Doris Henry now took to the floor and with flat-toned but barbed comments made clean incisions into the rotten flesh of their Gow’, portrayed by Cathryn Parker with impressive timing. lives. Pronouncing his dreams of travelling the world and not Cathryn squeezed out every titter from the audience tolerating the fumed-oak furniture and cold-ham existence Coward intended from his bitchy, gossipy lines. From tetchy that God had been punishing him with for fifteen years! His banter between her and her mother, ‘Mrs Rockett’ played secret stash of savings allowed him to leave Doris with £50 with assuredness by Josie Hobbs, and her impatient swipes and her bullying and cheating ways to manage on while he directed at her snivelling daughter, Roxanne Lloyds’ ‘Elsie’, it went anywhere he chose with over £500. He held out a little was clear that Doris Gow was used to ruling the roost and hope for Elsie but the audience appreciated it wasn’t much, fully intended it to stay that way. Roxanne presented the with the final quip as he dashed for the door that foremost role of the charmless, whining schoolgirl with confidence she needed to get her adenoids fixed. Gerrie Purcell and certainly conveyed that Elsie was well on her way to Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers 70

OPEN AIR CONCERT HELPS REVIVE THE BASE A new committee has been formed in Seaford to focus on reviving the Base, to ensure the building is used to its full potential. The Base is owned by the council, and positioned between the Salts Cafe and the tennis courts. At present it is used only occasionally. The committee includes two Seaford town councillors, a town council employee, the Young Mayor, a member of the original Base committee, police staff and a retired music teacher. The committee would like to see this building regularly used by young people for music, drama rehearsals and creative activities, and as a drop-in centre as already used by the Youth Development Service alongside the Mercread Centre of Seaford. To raise awareness, an open-air band event will be held at the Base on the Salts on 9th September from 4pm 8pm, to raise awareness both of the Base and what the committee are trying to achieve for local young people. Local bands Red Emperor, Full House, Juno and The Riffz are all lined up to play and Sussex Events are setting the stage and lighting. The Base committee is able to stage the event thanks to the generous sponsorship of local businesses, which have so far donated a staggering £1,200 for the youth project event. The committee would like to extend a huge thank you to those who have contributed to date: Philip Mann, WF Coote Ltd, STC Kitchens and Bathrooms, VR Flowers, Brian Huntly Builders, Amber’s Florist, CW Blunt (Peacehaven), CRB Contractors, Pegasus Scaffolding, Brooklyn Motors, Mr Ian Glover, GW Ironworks, Tansley’s and Buckle-Up. The organisers are also grateful for the help of local lifeguards, who will provide first-aid cover for the event, and a police presence has been requested to help the show run smoothly.

Unwilling to Lend? Or Unwilling to Borrow? A scheme designed to make more lower-cost loans available to businesses is being launched this month writes Joe Fackler of Swindells Small Business Unit. The Funding for Lending scheme will see the Bank of England make low-cost funds available to banks in a bid to tackle rising borrowing costs and increase lending. The scheme is also designed to bring down mortgage interest rates for individuals, with building societies also able to take advantage of Funding for Lending.
“I find that many lenders continue to be risk averse, especially to small businesses. However many businesses also, understandably, lack the confidence to push the button on new investment or take on new commitments. In our experience there are lenders out there willing to lend to well considered proposals supported by a good business plan. We are always delighted to review and advise and if appropriate help prepare a proposal.”
For further information, please email Joe on: Joe writes: “While it is too early to say what joef@swindellsaccounting.co.uk impact the Funding for Lending scheme will have in the long term any move to encourage or telephone: 01323 892549. banks to lend more to small and medium sized 128x90ad-in-control_swin-ad 29/12/2010 15:39 Page 1 is to be welcomed.”

DIVORCE DO’S AND DON’TS Divorce is never easy but those of us who do it for a living have found ways to simplify the process and avoid the worst consequences. SEAFORD BOWLING CLUB As part of our centenary year celebrations Seaford Bowling Club invited the Chelsea Pensioners to visit and play a game of bowls. They arrived looking resplendent in their scarlet coats as they posed for photographs with our club members and some very excited grandchildren. They then changed into their playing strip of blue trousers and shirts, with each wearing their regimental belt. We enjoyed a super game with much laughter and they joined us for a lovely tea. We learnt much of the history of the pensioners and about their daily life. As a result we have been invited back next year to play a game with them and have a tour of the Royal Hospital.
NEW NURSING HOME OPENING IN SEAFORD A much-needed high-quality service of nursing care for those experiencing dementia, is opening in Seaford. Abundant Grace, which was originally the children’s home, has now been entirely redeveloped by South Coast Nursing Homes. The company was founded over 50 years ago by the current owner’s parents and is now run by himself and his own children. Abundant Grace has been cleverly and sympathetically designed as a high-quality nursing home that nestles in neatly next to the Seaford Golf Course in Firle Road. The home is beautifully built, well equipped and furnished to a very desirable standard. The care home specialises in providing good care for older people with dementia as well as older people who require nursing but not a hospital. The intention is to provide this service at extremely competitive rates to ensure it can be of benefit to all the community of Seaford and surrounding towns and villages. Abundant Grace is open to everyone for previews, advice and assessment. The best way to find out more is to visit the website www.scnh.co.uk

CALL FOR PICTURES AS THE DOWNS LEISURE CENTRE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS Customers, members, ex-employees and local residents are being asked to dig deep in their photograph collections by the staff at the Downs Leisure Centre to see if they have any pictures of the facility over the last 25 years. The sports centre was officially opened in September 1987, four years after the first halls were made available to the public. The building was originally a Victorian boarding school for young ladies that closed in the 1960s. The building was used as office space for the old Seaford Urban District Council and then inherited by Lewes District Council. In 1983 the school rooms and dormitories were converted to flats and the school halls were made available for public use. To celebrate 25 years since the sports facility was opened to the people of Seaford, the leisure centre is hoping to be able to present a pictorial timeline of the last 25 years for display within the centre. If you have images or photographs you are able to share please either emailinfo@waveleisure.co.uk or drop copies into reception at the Downs Leisure Centre. Please do not leave originals with the staff, although by prior arrangement we can organise to colour copy images up to A3 (420 x 297 mm or 16.5 x 11.7 in) in size.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

Who’s Who In Seaford?
June Wood, Secretary of Seaford Kurlers, June has lived in Seaford for over six years and is a member of Seaford Kurlers, Wave Leisure and is on the committee of the Seaford Seniors Forum. She retired from working at the University of Sussex where she ran three research departments in the School of Biological Science. In 1989 she was presented with an Honorary Master’s Degree for her contributions to industrial relations on campus. She has since lived in Dartmoor for 18 years where she ran a village store. June is married with three daughters, eight grand children, two great grandchildren and two Siamese-cross, female cats. What do you like best about Seaford? From the minute that we came to live here we were greeted with such friendliness. That feeling has grown. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba What book are you reading? Things can only Get Better by John O’Farrell – eighteen miserable years in the life of a Labour supporter. What is your favourite film? Brief Encounter. Which living person do you most admire? Nelson Mandela What is your favourite smell? The smell of a newly bathed baby. What words or phrases do you most overuse? I use the word ‘whatever’ far too much. How do you relax? I don’t. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Picture this – very early one Sunday morning many years ago. Opening the front door to get milk from the doorstep – door closes behind me. I am stark naked !! What is your favourite journey? The A534 from the M6 to Congleton in Cheshire when I can first see the profile of a hill formation called The Cloud. Beautiful childhood memories flood back. What is your greatest fear? Not being able to see. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Gandhi. What makes you sad? Man’s in humanity to man. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Knowing that those that I love are near to me. What is the best advice you have ever been given? If you really want to – then you can. What would your motto be? NEVER give in to ignorance. Anything else you may like to include? I want to see a world that is free from ANY kind of discrimination. I will always strive to change such attitudes.

Andy Butcher, whose late wife Jill had planned to open her Bishopstone garden for the event, welcomed visitors in her place, and spent a lovely day as visitors remembered Jill in their garden. Paradise Park generously sponsored of the event, donating a fabulous BBQ for the first prize in the raffle.
Nine gardens threw open their gates, each receiving in excess of 100 visitors throughout the day. Five gardens were able to raise extra funds by providing tea and cakes, as well as a beautiful horticultural display. The day’s proceedings were started by world-renowned opera singer Dame Felicity Lott, at Driftwood, the garden of the event’s organiser, Geoff Stonebanks. His garden recently made the final four in a national garden competition and he is currently awaiting confirmation of being a finalist in another contest. Seaford Baptist Church Concert Choir News At 7.30pm on Friday 7th September, the Seaford Baptist Church Concert Choir will be staging the latest in its series of annual concerts at the church in Belgrave Road, Seaford. Now with a membership thirty strong, at its fortnightly Wednesday evening rehearsals, the choir sings music by Karl Jenkins, John Rutter, Roger Jones, a host of songs from the musicals and Gospel music. Our subscriptions are only ÂŁ1 per rehearsal. The Concert Choir has been invited to sing at the International Plant Fair at Great Dixter at lunchtime on Saturday 7th October, the third time the choir has been invited to sing at this famous house and gardens, the home of the late Christopher Lloyd. The nice thing is that members of the gardening staff join the choir to sing on these occasions. The Choir has an exciting social calendar too, with minibus trips to the Bluebell Railway, RHS Gardens, Wisley and National Trust properties; Scotney Castle and Sissinghurst.
We are now in the early stages of planning our biggest production yet, a christian Musical by Roger Jones that tells the miraculous story of Jesus and Lazarus, Mary and Martha. We are hoping to present this at Pentecost next year and we would love to involve singers and musicians from every church in Seaford. Wouldn't that be something? If you think that you would like to hear the choir in action, or get involved, do come to the concert on September 7th or email frankparker@supanet.com. Tickets ÂŁ5 payable at the door. Frank Parker, SBC Concert Choir.

Rotary Club of Seaford We have had a busy time this summer, some of the time with good weather! Our new president, Paul Vaesen, was soon in action at our Tavern in the Tent presence at the Seaford Family Funday, which had a steady stream of visitors (and other stall holders) dropping in for refreshments. This joint venture with the Seaford Martello Rotary Club will again be giving all proceeds to charities and good causes . Sunday August 12 saw another Boot, Craft & Produce Fair at the Martello Fields, Seaford. The public opening time will be 09:00 with free parking, closing time 13:00. We look forward to seeing you there. We supported three events over the busy weekend on 18/19 August. on the Sunday, both based at the Martello Fields, Seaford, and we were also pleased to offer support on Sunday August 19 to the Seahaven Para Games at the Downs Leisure Centre. Over our 65 years’ history we have always aimed to support all sections of the local community and this will continue. Over the next twelve months, as well as all our normal activities, we intend to run three events of particular interest to young people. February/March 2013 will see a repeat of the very successful Young Musicians Competition. This was staged for the first time earlier this year when the audience packed the hall at Newlands School to enjoy the amazing talent shown by both instrumentalists and singers. But before that, in November there will be the first competition run by the Club to find the Young Chef of the Year. This will also be at Newlands School and, like the Young Musicians, will be open to the 11 to 17 years age group for students who live in Seaford or attend a school in the town. But we will not ignore the younger age group and will also be mounting a Young Writers Competition for a much wider range of ages. Planning is now underway for all these events and details about dates and how to enter will be published shortly and will also be on the Club’s website at www.seafordrotary. org.uk.
