Welcome to the September issue of Seaford Scene, your monthly community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. All of sudden the summer is drawing to a close and autumn will soon be upon us, as traditionally September marks the start of the season. September often has some of the best weather, so here’s hoping for a warm, Indian summer!

The RAFA Seahaven Branch are holding their annual Battle of Britain parade and church service on 18th September, including a Lancaster aircraft fly past, see page 36. PLAYING WITH FIRE This September sees the return of Seaford’s music and arts festival Seaford Live! showcasing a host of local and regional talent.

Running from Friday 2nd to Sunday 11th September 2011, the festival features music from local bands and artists as well as Artwave open houses, poetry, booking readings, church concerts, guitar workshops, a ‘gosplehish’ choir and art exhibitions.

Now in its fourth year Seaford Live! continues to raise money for charity and this year is proud to be supporting Sussex Air Ambulance, with proceeds and collections going to this deserving charity.

Many of the events and performances are free to attend along with a number of ticketed events. This year sees a host of musical talent including established acts such as Juno, Barber and Taylor and Ulrike Gabriele in the Crouch Gardens, Trip Wire, Seaford Folk Dance Group at the Downs Leisure Centre, Archway choirs, Seaford Baptist Church concert, Eastern promise western mind, Riffz and blues and Celtic guitar workshops with Terry Lees. We are also delighted to see the return of the Crypt in this year’s Seaford Live! Festival with poetry and booking readings. For events at the Crypt please contact the venue directly.

Seaford Peace garden Memorial Vigil for the Nagasaki Bombings The chair of Lewes District Council, Eileen Russell, and the Mayor of Seaford, Linda Wallraven, with her consort, attended the memorial vigil to the victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki held in Seaford Peace Garden on Tuesday 9 August.

Katsumi Smith showed the origami cranes that she made in memory of the victims of the bombing of Nagasaki, to Eileen Russell, Chair of Lewes District Council. Japanese children also handed out origami cranes to members of the public. People stood in silence and candles and lanterns were lit in memory of the victims of the bombing of Nagasaki on August 9th 1945.

Seaford in Bloom a a a a a a a a The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day took place on Sunday July 17th and for the fourth year running was sponsored

by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents.

Unfortunately for everyone, we suffered the worst weather conditions ever for the annual Open Gardens Day, with gale-force winds and nearly three hours of relentless heavy rain. In spite of this, there was an excellent turnout to view the ten lovely gardens on show. £1,400 was raised from ticket sales, sponsorship, cream teas and plant sales. This was an excellent result in view of the adverse weather conditions.

The generosity of the sponsors, the kindness of those who opened their gardens and the enthusiastic support of everyone who visited and struggled on through the wind and rain, is greatly appreciated by SIB Chairman Isabel Stephenson and her committee as it makes all their hard work worthwhile. New venues are always being sought to be included in this annual event and anyone who is interested in opening their garden in 2012 should contact Isabel. All the money raised goes towards the floral displays in town and, as many people have commented, despite the recent gales, they are looking better than ever this year.

WHAT’S ON AT THE HOP? ‘Bad Girls and Cicadas’ Nick Orsborn Saturday 27th Aug - Thursday 8th Sept Mon to Sat 10.30am - 5pm, Sun 12 - 5pm.

After studying Fine Art at Kingston and Reigate Nick moved to Brighton in 1970. In 1973 he co-founded Cicada Jewellery, producing a range of designs in casting resin which, with its use of colour, moulding and carving, eventually came to represent the three-dimensional interpretation of his creative thinking. Nick has had many exhibitions of his paintings, including shows at Smiths Gallery, Covent Garden and Harrods Art gallery. His work has also been shown and sold at the New York International Art Fair. He is a regular exhibitor in the Brighton Festival Open Houses, and in 1987 provided the image for the first full-colour Brighton Festival Poster. In 2007 he was elected to the membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and now shows his work each year at the Mall Galleries, London.

His paintings seek to express the optimistic side of life – he explores the subtleties and amusing absurdities of the human condition, and above all his work is hallmarked with a sense of joie-de-vivre – a celebration and a fusion of the figurative and the abstract in life as in art. His work encompasses watercolours, oil paintings, mixed-media pieces, resin jewellery and limited edition giclée prints. www.nickorsborn.com.

Founded in 1977 the Society has as its main objective the promotion of professional works in all kinds of waterbased media. This exhibition shows the rich variety and diversity of members work, from traditional watercolour to the exuberant use of inks and acrylics.

This is the Society’s third showing at the Hop Gallery.

In recent years it has held successful exhibitions in The Jointure Studios in Ditchling , at Worthing Art Gallery and most recently at the Henfield Hall. From the figurative to the abstract, and from the beautifully observed to the richly imagined, there is something in this show for everyone to enjoy. Expect the unexpected!

Early exhibitions were held at the Grange Rottingdean, at Rye, Hove Art Gallery and Worthing Art Gallery. From 1983 onwards the Burstow Gallery at Brighton College alternated with Hove as a venue, but the Society ventured over to Chichester and the Crypt at Seaford in the Nineties, and even went as far as Camelford in Cornwall to a gallery owned by one of the members.In recent years, successful exhibitions have been held in Ditchling, Lewes, Henfield and Worthing.

SEAFORD Scene

The Esplanade Hotel was built in 1891 on the site of the old Assembly Rooms and Bath House. In 1901, the manageress of the hotel was killed when she fell down an open lift shaft. The hotel had several royal visitors and In 1905 even the king himself, Edward VII stayed there. The dramatic photo shows the sad end to the building when it was destroyed by fire in July 1976.

We have two ‘shows’ each year. This year we had a Sweet Pea & Rose Show in June and our main Annual Horticultural Show was in August. We have a full programme of social evening talks and coach outings from January to November. Our members enjoy discounts from local businesses, nurseries and garden centres. We have eight social evenings a year, all held in the St. Leonard’s Church Hall. The ’70s 1970 saw the election of Mrs Hughes-Games as President and it also brought about another trip to the Chelsea Flower Show. A coach was hired for 35 members to attend. Each member paid only a pound for the cost of the coach plus entrance to the show.

A second “mystery coach outing” was arranged which included a stop for a three-course meal. The cost of this outing was £1.50 per member. October saw a successful jumble sale held at the Simmons Institute Hall. Two new classes were included in the late Autumn Show. One was for Honey and the second for homemade Sloe Gin! 1973 saw the cancellation of a coach trip to the Congress Theatre at Eastbourne due to lack of support.

The star of the show was Dickie Henderson and the cost was £1.50. It was stated that the lack of support might be because Mr Henderson was not everybody’s cup of tea!

Coach trips continued to be popular. In 1977 the outing was to Guildford followed by a boat trip to Godalming returning by coach again to Seaford. Total cost £2 each.

In 1978 Bert Rose was elected as the new President.

The annual subscription was increased to 50p per member due to rising inflation and a campaign was started to stop the council from building on the Southdown Road Allotments.

Seaford Gardening Club I am sure you have all enjoyed the lovely summer weather we have experienced at times in the last couple of months. Although a little warm for gardening in some parts of the day, it was good to find a shady spot and just sit with a book and a cuppa or something stronger!

Let’s hope the remainder of the summer is as pleasant.

We did not have a meeting in July so no talk to report on; instead I thought I would give a brief summary of the three outings that members and friends have enjoyed so far this season. In May, after having stopped for an hour in Tenterden for a coffee and a browse round the shops., we visited the Mount Ephraim Gardens near Faversham.

Mount Ephraim is a very peaceful place with ten acres of gardens overlooking the Swale Estuary. A refreshing cup of tea and piece of delicious homemade cake concluded the afternoon, before we set off for home. In June we visited Uppark House and gardens, which has recently been restored after a disastrous fire in 1989. Here we could experience the contrast between the elegant world of the Feterstonhaugh family and underworld life

of the servants. A very interesting afternoon was had exploring the lovely house, discovering the underground tunnels and enjoying the pretty gardens. Another cuppa and delicious food sent us on our way at the end of the day. Highclere Castle was our destination for July and what a treat for us all. A beautiful house used in the filming of the TV series Downton Abbey - the second series has already been filmed, the guide informed us.

It was fun searching for the secret garden which was well worth the effort when we eventually found it.

Another enjoyable day. There are a few places left on the September 7th and October 15th outings and anyone is welcome to come.

Living at Cuckmere Haven Towards the end of last year, our dear friend Carolyn McCourt put a very attractive proposition to us: would we like to rent and care for her house whilst she was travelling in China with her daughter? Now, this is no ordinary house. This house is steeped in magic and history, perched precariously atop the cliffs with one of the most iconic views in Britain. Built in 1818 by Customs and Excise as a means of curtailing smuggling, the coastguard cottage at Cuckmere Haven boasts a panoramic view of the horizon that brings a sense of uplift and peace to all who enjoy it. If I’m sounding a little like an estate agent here, forgive me. This isn’t the kind of house that comes up regularly on estate agents’ lists and if it did, gushing would be understandable! You won’t be surprised when I tell you that we said yes.

My husband and I have spent the last year living on a beautiful little 91-year-old wooden boat, our own piece of history. We’ve loved it; it has given us the chance to spend more time together, doing the things we enjoy and we have been welcomed into a close-knit live-aboard community. Before that, we were very happily living in Stanmer Village, in another close-knit community. But the chance to live at Cuckmere Haven, well, that is something else altogether.

The cottage is regularly hired as a film location and has recently been featured in projects as diverse as a Natwest mortgage advert to Brora the cashmere company’s brochure. Groups of film students have created their own mini-masterpieces using it as a backdrop. What a lot of fun it is to watch a film shoot! Especially the ones where they bring crates of beautiful clothes and shoes for the models to wear! Carolyn has asked us to take over this aspect of managing the house as a film location, something we’re only too happy to do.

We also felt hugely welcomed by Seaford people as we went around to all the satellite venues to help distribute the many paintings by amateur artists. Particularly memorable is a delicious and well-needed meal at Diellas after another manic day of preparation!

We are looking forward to discovering Seaford and making it our local community.

Before Carolyn and Li Chen set off on their adventures to China, we will be spending a week together to get to know the rhythms of life without mains electricity. We’ve been at the cottage during cold winter days when the nights draw in even before the sun seems to have made an appearance but it will be different when we’re really ‘living it’. Last year’s Christmas card from Carolyn urged us not to forget to order coal before this year’s winter set in with the word ‘brrrrrrr’ to remind us this would be a rather chilly mistake.

But we’ve still got the last days of summer to enjoy before then…and where better to soak up the rays and marvel at nature’s majesty than right by the sea with the Seven Sisters soaring up to the skyline?

For a week in June, we were very much involved in the wonderful Celebrate Cuckmere festival which Carolyn and her friend Tanya Lindon set up as a way for artists to explore their feelings about the imminent changes for the Cuckmere Valley. It was the perfect initiation to our new life. Not only did we get to meet lots of people for whom Cuckmere is sacred and special, we got to enjoy a vast array of beautiful artwork inspired by the landscape.

The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company came to Seaford’s Crouch Gardens in July and played to an audience of over 240 people. People came with chairs, rugs and picnics to see ‘Gentle Harry’s Farm’, and were able to enjoy a glass of Pimms in the Exchange Garden before the show began. The performance showcases the impressive acting and musical talents of the cast in a witty production written by the company’s director, Pete Talbot.

This is the theatre company’s second year in Crouch Gardens, invited by local community group Friends of the Crouch. This September will see further musical and theatrical events in Crouch Gardens as part of Seaford Live!.

Battle of Britain Parade and Church Service 18th September 2011 On the 18th September 2011 Seahaven Branch of RAFA will be holding its 71st Anniversary Parade and Church Service in Seaford. The Parade is held every year to commemorate the Battle of Britain in 1940, but also to remember all those Airmen and Air Women who have served in the Royal Air Force and Air Forces of the Commonwealth.

At the time of writing we have had confirmation that this year the Mayor of Seaford, the Mayor of Peacehaven and the Chair of Lewes District Council will be attending. We also will be supported by other RAFA Branches and the Royal British Legion and of course 1218 Newhaven Sqn. Air Cadets, plus other distinguished guests and friends.

The parade will commence at Seaford War Memorial at 14:15hrs reaching St. Leonard’s Church at 15:00hrs. We hope to march from the War Memorial to the Church again this year.

Retired Forces Friends Social Club A few weeks ago, a lunch was arranged by a group of friends at St James’ Trust, and once again we all had a good time. 28 guests were invited and tucked into a beautiful salad followed by a delicious dessert. It was a very successful afternoon, an idea arranged by a group of friends and an opportunity for catching up. The raffle also did well, raising another £33, making the funds raised to date nearly £100.

Seaford Youth Drama Group

C onfidence C reative C onstructive An ambitious project to create an artificial reef off the Sussex coast near Seaford has been launched by the Sussex Marine Trust.

Sink One 4 Sussex hopes to create a reef habitat by sinking an ex-Navy warship for colonisation by marine life, improving biodiversity, attracting divers and boosting commerce throughout the local area. The ship ideally will be one of the Royal Navy’s decommissioned Type 42 Destroyers, which will provide more than 10,000 square metres of prime marine 'real estate' for population by numerous ocean species. Taking inspiration from the HMS Scylla, scuttled off Plymouth in 2004, the Sussex ship reef is expected to boost tourism in the area, generating an estimated £606,320 each year in direct scuba-divingrelated revenue alone. The local community will benefit too from events and educational programmes based around the reef, and improved communal areas.

Once acquired, the ship will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any hydrocarbons (fuels, oils and lubricants) and other possible marine pollutants such as electrical cabling, and potential diver entanglement hazards such as pipes and some bulkheads. Parts of the ship’s top structure, such as the mast and antenna array, will be donated by the Trust to a local authority, to be re-used as works of public art in communal areas. Around 70 diver access holes will be cut into the vessel, which will then be towed to the chosen site, and anchored above its final resting place prior to scuttling. Scuttling will be achieved by using strategically placed explosive cutting charges to open holes in the ship’s hull, ensuring the vessel floods equally and rests on the seabed in an upright position, which is preferred by marine species and divers alike.

The reef ’s location which will be between Shoreham and Hastings, is currently fairly featureless, with a flat, sandy bottom on a base of pebbles. During the initial site survey, minimal marine life was sighted here, due to the nutrients in the water of the English Channel simply washing over the flat seabed and not settling and therefore not sustaining a local ecosystem. The impact of a Type 42 Destroyer landing on the seabed will therefore cause only a small amount of damage to this area, of which approximately 330 square metres will be permanently covered by the footprint of the ship. A wider area will temporarily be affected by silting caused by the impact but this is unlikely to be greater than the damage done on a daily basis through the action of tides and current.

As a result, the new reef ’s nutrient-catching hard surfaces will first attract algae and invertebrates such as barnacles, mussels and corals, followed by the larger marine creatures which feed on these pioneers. The resulting habitat will act as a nursery for many fish species, encouraging and sustaining the great biodiversity associated with reef communities. Webcams will also provide time-lapse footage of the habitat’s colonisation and a real-time feed of the underwater environment once the ship is in place on the seabed, giving even those on dry land a glimpse of life on the reef.

Volunteers wanted for Seaford Head Film Project After the success of the ‘Acting On It’ film project last year, Seaford Head Community College has invited Life Wisdoms charity to be involved with another film project and are looking for volunteers from the seniors community (those aged 50 and over) to work with a new group of students.

The previous project had a huge impact on building skills and self-confidence in the young people, as well as forging valuable links with the local community. The new project, which starts in September, will be led by professional drama coaches, Dee and Colin. This project provides an opportunity for younger and older people to work together to create a drama/film or series of dramas or short films.

We are looking for young people aged 5 to 18 to join our Drama Academy. If your child enjoys acting then „THE ACADEMY‟ is the place for them! We perform in many venues, including „The Barn Theatre‟ and ‟The Miles‟ Studios‟ as well as ‟The Tower Theatre‟ on the „Brighton Festival Fringe‟. We also enjoy turning any empty space into a performance space by bringing in raked seating, lighting, sound and set! SOMETHING TO HIDE A spectacularly thrilling show was put on by Seaford Little Theatre last Tuesday (Tuesday 26th July 2010).

Full of unexpected twists and turns, spine-tingling ‘Something to hide’ by Leslie Sands was by far the best production I have seen at the Little Theatre.

‘Something to hide’ is a mystery thriller based around the suspicious events taking place in the English country house of novelist Howard Holt (Steve Wetherilt) and his wife Karen (Sandra Haynes). The action of play revolves around a police investigation into Karen’s car accident and the alleged murder of Howard’s mistress Julia Grant (Angela Chabot).

At the start of the play I had my doubts about the production. The opening scene is supposed to be lustful banter between Howard and his mistress, yet the fact that they were having an affair was not all that apparent.

The scene was a little bit static and almost too rehearsed; however as the play progressed it just got better and better, resulting in an all out edge-of-the-seat thriller.

The central characters were all well cast and equally well played; notable in particular was the performance of John Hamilton as Inspector Davies. A bumbling yet astute man, Inspector Davies is the policeman heading the investigation into the strange circumstances of Mrs Holt’s car crash. Davies refuses to let the wool be pulled over his eyes, and suspects from the start that Mr and Mrs Holt are covering up something substantial.

Hamilton was perfect for the role of a country policeman and played his character with brilliant accuracy. The Inspector’s incessant prying into a seemingly innocent accident sets the plot rolling for the entire play. Equally, the performances of Sandra Haynes and Steve Wetherilt as the warring couple covering up a crime were very enjoyable. The pair worked well together; Wetherilt’s strong scheming and manipulation contrasted well with Haynes’s nervous and crumbling character.

As the plot thickened and the play drew to a close the audience sat heavy with anticipation, teetering on their seats and hoping not to be left on another cliff-hanger (as we were in the interval). A fantastic twist at the end really made the production a stand-out show.

‘Something to hide’ was really well performed by all and definitely worth seeing. Alan G Baker did a great job of directing the mystery and deserves the praise the production received. A truly enjoyable evening.

She has been working at the TIC for over 13 years, having previously worked in the library service. She is a member of Seaford Allotment Society, which keeps her very busy and she shares her life with her partner Richard.

What do you most enjoy about your job? I enjoy meeting a variety of people from all walks of life. Every day is so different, from providing local community information, booking accommodation for overseas visitors to promoting local events like ‘Artwave’ the visual arts festival for the Lewes District which is an event I particularly enjoy.

What do you like best about Seaford? The friendly people, beautiful countryside and unspoilt seafront.

What is your favourite song or piece of music? I enjoy all types from classical, pop, rock, punk to flamenco.

What is your favourite film? Moulin Rouge and Chocolat.

What is your idea of happiness? A hot summer’s day in the garden enjoying good food, wine and laughter with friends.

What book are you reading? Nigel Slater’s Real Food, it is just one of my collection of over 200 cookery books.

Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? The Crouch Peace garden with it’s tranquil planting, creative sculpture and seating, it is a joy to visit.

Which living person do you most admire? My mother who at 91 years young is still very independent and is an inspiration to anyone who meets her. I love her dearly How do you relax? Canoeing on the River Cuckmere, walking the seashore and the South Downs National Park, visiting local attractions, belly dancing! and helping at our friends’ award winning garden, ‘Driftwood’ at Bishopstone, on their open days in aid of charities.

What makes you sad? The recent rioting in our towns and cities.

What is your favourite smell? Natural - the smell of roses.

Synthetic - my favourite perfume Agent Provocateur.

Which person in history would you most like to meet? Claude Monet. I love his paintings and the beautiful garden he created at Giverny.

What is your favourite journey? To our holiday home in Spain with the anticipation of a relaxing holiday with friends.

Seaford Museum & Heritage Society, Heritage Group

has been vacant for several years since the sad death of Pat Berry who ran similar courses for many years.

Seaford Rediscovered - The Course

The course will cost £45 to Seaford Museum members or £50 to non-members, but that will include a year’s membership of the Museum. Prior early booking and payment will be essential as the organisers expect the course will be very popular.

‘Tides and Turbulence’; ‘Not so Rotten’ and ‘Lessons and Leisure’ are the themes of three of the six-session, Seaford local history courses being run by Seaford Museum on Saturday mornings from mid-September until the end of October.

The course tutor will be Kevin Gordon, the popular local Seaford historian and Seaford Museum Chronicler. Kevin has drawn on his own knowledge and new research, together with the Museum’s extensive and important archive, to design a course which will have widespread interest. Following an U3A Course in Handbell Ringing, ‘Seaford Handbell Ringers’ was established in1999.

Generous donations from Help the Aged’, the Millennium Trust and Seaford Council subsequently enabled the Group to purchase a set of handbells from the Whitechapel Foundry. Two groups now meet every Wednesday either in the morning from 10am to 12.30pm or in the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm at St James’ Trust, Blatchington Road, Seaford. The members derive great enjoyment from playing as part of a group and also improving their skills.

One year ago, due to the interest of several local people, a Beginners’ Group was set up. This group has received instruction throughout the year and is now ready to integrate into the afternoon group, which will happen in September.

The morning group is led by Barbra Bradley and the afternoon group by Joe Tigg. The Handbell Ringers are often invited to play to various organisations in the community.

So, if you are interested in learning how to make music as part of a Handbell Group, can read music or would like to pursue a new interest, please contact Joe Tigg on 01323 893878. Friends of Seaford Library Visit Jubilee Library To anyone interested in the past, old books and manuscripts are a rare treat. In mid-July a small group from the Friends of Seaford Library spent a memorable afternoon at Brighton’s Jubilee Library.

After a guided tour of this very impressive centre and some welcome refreshments we were taken into the library’s ‘Rare Books and Special Collections Department’. The department is home to about 45,000 items, most of tem published before 1850. They are the result of very generous donations by individual collectors, as well as works purchased by the library itself. The material covers over six centuries from early printed books and illuminated manuscripts to private press publications and printed material. They are a valuable contact with people’s minds in the past as they cover subjects such as literature, history, the arts, philosophy, natural history and theology. Among the most popular with visitors is Dr Johnson’s first English dictionary. There is also a 14th-century first edition by the famous printer, William Caxton, the beautifully composed 15th-century Book of Hours and a History of Scotland dating back to 1585. There are also curiosities like the 14th-century work by Thomas Woolgar, Flora Lewensis and the earliest known work of sports medicine, De Arte Gymnastica by Geronimo Mercurialls, a sixteenth-century writer who studied diet, exercise and hygiene in ancient Classical texts.

The manager of the Rare Books Department, Margaret Curson, kindly laid out on display a selection of books which included the second edition of Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies published in 1632.

Amongst other works were a clever pattern book of plans for eighteenth-century gardening and some exquisite colour illustrations of Japanese dress.

Interestingly, these kinds of interests still appeal to people today but at times one is given a jolt by seeing the inclusion of an old work on witchcraft.

Old leather books of the kind in this collection were of course intended to last but, to ensure their preservation, they are kept in cool conditions in a store behind the display room. Mrs Curson kindly took us around the tall shelves and rows of leather volumes before we left.

SEAFORD & DISTRICT FOLK DANCE GROUP Folk dancing has taken place in the Seaford area since the 1960s, initially under the direction of the Education Institute.

Then a Country Dance Club was formed in 1969 and continued through the 1970s. Summer dances were held outside in the Crouch Gardens and holidaymakers were encouraged to join in. The organisers included the owners of the Sea Hotel, who were members of the club and thought that there was little entertainment for visitors to the town at that time.

The present club was started in 1985 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010 with a grand dance at the Seaford Constitutional Club. In the early years there was a display team, which danced at many events in this area and also travelled to France to give displays. French dancers made return visits to Seaford to give displays of their style of dancing. A highlight of the 1980s was the annual 18th-Century Ball, when members and guests wore elaborate costumes and danced to the tunes of John Playford. A popular venue for this was the oakpanelled hall at Corsica Hall, long before the building was converted into flats.

Nowadays the club meets every Monday evening at the Downs Leisure Centre, except in August and on bank holidays. There is a very friendly informal atmosphere and you do not need to come with a partner or have any previous dancing experience. It is suitable for all ages and a very enjoyable way of having exercise. New dancers are helped by more experienced members. There is a different caller each week and a variety of dance styles including 18th-century Playford, traditional country dances, American and some modern dances.

The club holds two Saturday evening dances during the year with live bands and callers from around the country.

There are also some afternoon tea dances and the profits from one of these is given to local charities. These have included Newhaven Coastwatch, Seaford First Responders and St. James Clubhouse.

On 5th September the club is holding an open evening as part of Seaford Live. There will be simple dances and a warm welcome to anyone who would like to try folk dancing as a new activity. Everyone was truly amazed by the experience. We were very lucky indeed to have our local Seaford Historian, Kevin Gordon, to be our guide. He brought British history and our heritage alive. The building itself seemed to talk to us about its place in the history books. Seaford’s part in the making of British history was very carefully explained to us by Kevin. Highly recommended.

Because we are members of ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) we were able to hire a coach from them, enabling us to be able to take any disabled members.

Seaford Kurlers are a very active sports group that is well able to cater for disabled people and enable them to take part in our fun sport on equal terms with those that are fully able. Our numbers have grown to 40 plus.

Running Commentary...

With less daylight now available towards the end of each day, midweek runs will tend to be shorter but this could well mean that you will find yourself running on much fresher legs at the weekend, and that could result in you running further, even if you’re not building up for the local Beachy Head Marathon next month.

On those long runs it is worth remembering that the wild blackberries that abound on the Downs are a good source of sustenance, and just what you need when you start to flag. This month’s guest contributor is Mark Chadd who has been running for about 9 years and rates his 2009 Beachy Head Marathon time of just over 5 hours as his greatest achievement.

He writes… “People who do not go running have often asked me why I run, especially as I am at the stage in life where my hair has lost it’s natural colouring and the body is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Like many people I started running to get fit, because I was fed up with feeling both overweight and lethargic. At first it was a struggle and when I read fitness programmes stating ‘… and on the fourth week run for 30 minutes.’ I thought, no way Jose, you’re ‘avin a laugh! However, when you

start from a relatively low base, improvement does come quickly, which encourages you and then without realising it you start to get a bit of a buzz from running.

My neighbour, who was a very capable runner and member of Seaford Striders, suggested I go along to a club night and give it a try to see if it was for me, as in his opinion that was the best way of both enjoying and improving your running, and I must say he was spot on.

Of course I was nervous on the first night because I thought they would be all super-fit athletes who would leave me for dead but I could not have been more wrong.

I was made to feel very welcome and was introduced to a group of runners who they thought would be about my pace and off we went. To start running in a group was a real eye opener and so much more fun and made the whole thing a real social occasion. Additionally of course, I was also getting fit. I began to enjoy my running more and more, and even entered some races. Like anything in life, along the way I have had my ups and downs with personal bests and frustrating injuries, but even when you have a bad run or it seems harder work than usual, when you’ve finished you still get a great feeling of satisfaction, even if you’ve just gone for a long slow plod and discussed with your fellow runners all your aches and pains and frustrations… definitely a cathartic experience. So despite my advancing years and dodgy right knee, I enjoy my running and the people I run with. I have done things I never thought I would achieve in a million years, which is great for the soul. Most importantly, I have made a new group of friends I would never have otherwise met if I had not started running. For certain, it is a sport that has something for everybody, which is why I run.”

The Mayor’s Mad March Marathon!

The Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Linda Wallraven, has launched a Mayor’s Mad March Marathon (MMMM) which aims to raise funds for WAVES, the Family Support Service based in Church Street, Seaford.

She has written to Seaford organisations asking them to pick a date in March 2012 and host an event of any size in aid of WAVES – the Mayor will attend, take part and publicise the events, which could include a spare change hunt, a tug-of-war, a youth concert, a sponsored sporting event, cake or book sales and dress up (or down) days at work.

The Royal Society of St George, Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors and staff and Councillors at Seaford Town Council have already pledged their support in hosting events.

SUSSEX ROAMABILITY Rambling at Bentley A day full of interest and variety was enjoyed by our disabled ramblers at Bentley Wildfowl Trust and Motor Museum.

The large community of ducks, geese, cranes and swans were obviously used to admirers as we were treated to a display by a handsome peacock who posed for us in the most flattering of surroundings. We came upon a colony of flamingoes quite unexpectedly and that too, was spectacular.

Throughout the well-kept grounds, there was plenty to do including a unexpected free train ride! Robin Hood and his merry men and maids were also great fun, displaying their archery and combat skills. All were dressed for the part and seemed very comfortable in their clothes.

Another high point was the woods.

Here, in the cathedrallike forest, authentic medieval round houses were to be found and wondered at. It all seemed very cosy and snug.

An adventure playground was enjoyed by our younger friends whilst the adults preferred the dignity of the country house. Bentley has a number of motor scooters that can be used for the day and there is no charge for this excellent facility. Altogether it was a satisfying day.

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre

At Clifden House we reverse the reliance upon medication in our purpose built environment, so enabling individuals to live well with dementia and helping us to support family and carers.

We offer flexible daycare sessions, including evenings and weekends, to assist with individual need.

We also forge strong community links, not least through our full daily

activity programme. All our meals are also freshly prepared daily.

We support NVQ training and apprenticeships so that we can develop the carers of the future.

Our monthly support group takes place at 4pm on the first Tuesday of each month and is open to anyone in the local community with questions, experience or issues of dealing with dementia.
