News from the Rotary Club of Seaford The Tavern in the Tent (a joint venture by both of the Seaford Rotary Clubs) was in action again at the Seaford Town Council Diamond Jubilee celebration on the Bank Holiday Monday. Many people came to the event at the Martello Fields, Seaford despite the unimpressive weather, and it seemed most of them came to visit the Tavern! The bar was very busy and apologies were offered to some late comers to the bar - by closing time it had all but sold out. However, nearly £2000 was raised for charities and good causes, and many thanks are due to all of you who gave their support. The next Tavern outing was at the Seaford Family Funday at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford on Sunday 22 July, and we hope you enjoyed it. On Thursday 14 June, Seaford Head Community College welcomed back children from the Children of Chernobyl organisation based in Mid Sussex. This contact was initiated by John Owen in his Presidential Year, when we entertained them and introduced them to the College. John, Mike Hemmings and (then) President Isla Sitwell went to see what they were doing. We found the visitors were younger than last year’s cohort, had only come to England a few days before and, until then, were mostly strangers to each other. Nevertheless, as last year, it wasn’t long before they and their English counterparts were joining together in the various activities arranged for them. These ranged from the Climbing Wall in the Sports Hall to making “Olympic Medals” in technology, scones in the food technology area and an experiment in the science laboratory resulting in ice-cream making. The children certainly enjoyed themselves, especially in the activities involving food! This has been a very worthwhile contact and it is so good to see it being continued like this. Congratulations to our member Tony Lees, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to the community in Seaford and Sussex in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Tony has known about this for some time after he received a strange, but interesting, letter from a Very Important Person, but he was sworn to secrecy! The fourth year of giving reading & maths help to year 7 Seaford Head Community College students has now ended. During this academic year 16 Rotarians and eight

4

supporters have mentored 39 students, representing around 20% of the students in year 7. If you would like to join the happy throng in October, just let us know! We meet at SHCC Steyne Site at 8.40am until 9.10am on Mondays and Fridays for reading, and the same time on Thursdays for maths. Email mentor@seafordrotary. org.uk. The photo above shows a Monday reading student with a dictionary presented by Rotarian Peter Posgate, Chairman of the Vocational Service & Youth Opportunities Committee. We have another Boot, Craft & Produce Fair at the Martello Fields, Seaford on Sunday 12 August. As usual opening times for stallholders is 7.30am and the cost is £8. The public opening time is 9am and there is free parking, closing time is 1pm. We have had some unkind weather this year, so we do hope for good conditions this time. However we did stay open, unlike some other Boot Fairs, and we intend to continue that policy. There will, as usual, be refreshments available, and we shall also have a bouncy castle for youngsters. We hope to see you there.

SEAFORD SENIORS FORUM STOP PRESS NEWS UPDATE!! Important information from Jon Freeman, Chair of Seaford Seniors’ Forum Regarding the proposed consultation on the delivery of acute hospital services which may have radical and far-reaching effects for the residents of Seaford. East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust has announced that there is to be a 14-week consultation programme from 4th July to 28th September 2012, with regard to proposed changes to acute health care at both Eastbourne District General Hospital and the Conquest Hospital at Hastings. The Health Care Team who manage these services are considering centralising stroke care, emergency orthopaedic and emergency surgery at one of the two hospitals instead of providing this care at both sites. Other services may be considered for change, at a future date and it could be the end of our DGH as we now know it. ESHNHS Trust says that these changes will help to attract specialist staff to run these services. Specialists are required to see and treat an identified number of patients per year and are more likely to seek employment where the volume of cases can be guaranteed. By having almost all patients at one hospital instead of two will also help to cut down on the number of operations cancelled at the last minute due to staff shortages. 8

However, there are radical and far-reaching issues with regard to these proposals, not least the problem that residents of Seaford may be faced with travel problems if the decision is made to centralise services at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings, and lives being put at risk by an extended journey of some 20 miles from Eastbourne to Hastings, before emergency treatment and care can be given by specialist hospital staff. It takes approximately 20 minutes to arrive at the DGH from Seaford, 54 minutes to 1hour 15 minutes to reach the Conquest Hospital at Hastings!! This is a very serious matter for us all, and Seaford Seniors’ Forum is leading the way locally to voice concerns for all residents, and needs your support in looking at how best to ensure that acute hospital care-services are maintained at our local District General Hospital. The consultation event will be visiting Seaford on the 23rd August 2012, at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road Seaford, BN25 2EE from 6pm to 8.30pm. Full details can be found at www.esht.nhs.uk/shapingourfuture or if you wish for a paper copy call the Shaping our Future team on 01273 485300 Please come and meet the health care managers and voice your opinions and concerns about ensuring our local acute hospital services are not taken away. Your views and comments are essential to saving our District General Hospital. Please contact the Chair of Seaford Seniors’ Forum for more details about the event and the proposed changes. Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’

Newsletter Summer 2012

INTRODUCTION We welcome you in reading this, our first “intermediate” Newsletter, which is being produced to fill the long gap between our hand-delivered Spring and Autumn editions. We regularly keep in touch with our membership through email updates, and this shorter newsletter will appear each summer and winter, with the aim of keeping those of you without email addresses up to date with current issues etc. NO COLD CALLING SIGNS AND STICKERS The three new signs sponsored by NHW on the entrance roads to Seaford have been in place for a few weeks now, and by the time this article is published, the two replacements for those in Bishopstone Road, again sponsored by NHW, should also have been installed. These 5 new signs mark the boundaries of the blanket No Cold Calling Zone. Since the launch of the No Cold Calling Zone in March, a number of casual traders have been reported for trading illegally, and they have been stopped and some moved on by the police. As a result, the zone is proving to be an effective tool in helping to eliminate unwelcome callers and the exploitation of vulnerable residents. We are currently in the process of finalising the artwork for stickers that can be displayed on or near your front door. These stickers will politely ask uninvited callers to leave, and if not adhered to, the caller is committing an offence. We will keep you informed of the production and arrangements for distribution of the stickers in due course. In addition, the NHW committee will be consulting shortly with the police and Trading Standards to compile a set of concise guidance notes on your rights and the actions you can take if cold called. SECURITY PRECAUTIONS DURING THE SUMMER Although this summer has been particularly wet,

10

if the sun does shine and the temperature warms up, please take sensible precautions if you spend time out in the back garden etc. Be aware that open windows and unlocked doors etc are an invitation to the casual opportunist thief, so you are urged to keep vulnerable windows and doors closed and locked whilst out of the house. Equally, a car with open windows or an unlocked one on your driveway is a temptation, especially if there are valuables in sight. If you are going away on holiday, don’t forget to cancel milk and newspaper deliveries as uncollected items are a sure sign the house is temporarily unoccupied. It is also a good idea to advise a friend or your neighbour and ask them to check regularly that nothing is sticking out of your letterbox and that no items are visible through the door or letterbox. Also, having a light switched on and off by a timer control is a simple way of giving the impression the house is occupied during the hours of darkness. CURRENT THEFT/CRIME UPDATE We receive regular updates from Lewes Police about current thefts and crimes and there are two current issues to bring to your attention: 1. There have been recent thefts of catalytic converters from commercial vans and 4x4s in Lewes, Newhaven and Peacehaven. Please try and make sure you park these vehicles as securely as possible, or at the least in a well-lit position, so that thieves are deterred from approaching them. 2. There have been incidents of distraction theft recently. Please be on your guard if you are approached by a stranger whilst at a cash machine, shop checkout, petrol station etc, and keep a close eye on your purse, wallet, cards and do not fall into the trap of being distracted. Concentrate on maintaining sight of your belongings and firmly ask

the stranger to wait until you have finished. Be aware, the stranger may act friendly and helpful, but this is often a guise to make you feel relaxed with them and drop your guard. POLICE PANEL MEETINGS At the time of writing, the next Police Panel Meetings are as follows: East Area: 21st August, 7pm at the Vale Road Community Centre. Central Area: 29th August, 6pm at the Police Station, No 37 Church Street. All residents in the particular area covered are invited to attend to meet the local police and discuss any issues you may have. A Neighbourhood Watch Committee member is usually also in attendance. YEARLY SUBSCRIPTIONS At the end of 2011, we had just over 900 subscribers on record and our aim for 2012 is to boost this to over 1000 by the end of the year.

Currently, 600 households have either renewed membership or joined for the first time and there is a steady flow coming in. The more subscribers we have, the more impact and influence we can make on local issues, add support to local crime fighting and keep Seaford and Bishopstone a pleasant place to live. If you have not yet renewed, or are thinking of joining, please do so by using the Membership Form printed below, or one downloaded from our website pages. You can grow many trees from seed. This is great fun particularly for children. Start them off in small pots. Why not try Horse Chestnuts (conkers), Sweet Chestnuts, English Oak (Acorns), Sycamore or Walnuts? Otherwise, most other established trees come bare rooted or ready pot grown and can be transplanted at any time of year. Choose one with a straight stem and plant with a stake to give support.

Your main Annual Show is on Saturday 4th August at the Down’s Leisure Centre. Your entry forms should be submitted by the 1st August. All the usual classes. Many cups and prizes to be won. See your 2012 programme for details. See you there!

Exotic trees can really enhance your garden. Try varieties of Sophera, Maple, Paulownia. Then there are Palms such as Dwarf Fan Palm, Canary Island Date Palm, Chusan Palm or Sago Palm. If these don’t tempt you then stick to Banana, Taro, Bamboo and of course Rhododendron. There is such a wide range to choose from. Recommended nurseries are: Athelas Plant Nursery, Hooe Rd, Ninfield, East Sussex.

AUGUST checklist

3 If the weather is hot and dry (!) remember that plants in pots,

window boxes or in the greenhouse may need watering at least once a day. If the hosepipe ban is still in force make sure you have access to reserves of water. 3 Remove the growing tips from greenhouse tomatoes after four to five trusses or if they have reached the greenhouse roof. 3 By the end of the month you can start planting new strawberry plants or runners ready for next year’s crop. Replace strawberry plants if more than four years old. 3 Start removing faded flowers and seedpods on Fuchsias. Apply high potash feed. Do not over water plants in pots. Too much water can be fatal.

Firstly, you must use a suitable pot to contain the tree. This will become quite heavy so avoid plastic pots with narrow bottoms. These will become top heavy and may blow over in the wind! A square shape is best. It should have a large lip or handles so you can lift or shift it around the garden (take care when lifting heavy objects) - your local garden centre will have a good selection

of suitable containers. Fill the pot with John Innes. No. 3 soil-based compost and add some slow release fertiliser. Keep newly planted trees well watered for the first few months, particularly during hot weather.

an you grow trees without a large garden? Most gardens contain a selection of trees of varies sizes which give shade and privacy. However, if you only have a small garden it is still possible to grow a wide selection of trees in pots or containers. Trees growing in pots can be placed anywhere in the garden to enhance borders, fill gaps or just give height where none is available. Why not grow types of trees that you would not normally associate with an English garden? Exotic or southern hemisphere varieties can be an exciting challenge but you will need a greenhouse or conservatory to get them through the winter.

PEST & Diseases August is the month when pests and diseases become rampant. In a damp summer, which appears to describe this year, diseases can become a real problem. Pay particular attention to potatoes and tomatoes which can so easily become the victim of blight. However, should the summer be classed as hot and dry then aphids, red spider mite and other pests multiply prolifically. The best advice to avoid such attacks is to walk around the garden at least several times a week and inspect your plants. Taking prompt action early can save many plants. Try to turn over leaves to look for the little blighters hiding underneath. Pick them off or removing just the affected leaf may save the plant. Otherwise consider a localised spray. Ask at your local garden centre for advice on appropriate spays. Get to know your problem plants. Lilies attract Red Lily Beetles, black fly love Nasturtiums and Caterpillars love anything and everything. So be prepared and keep your garden looking lovely. Mike Parker (Chairman)

Seaford Gardening Club How strange that after South East Water imposed a hosepipe ban we have experienced weeks of rain! Still we have had a few warm dry days so perhaps we will get a ‘summer’ sometime. Our June talk entitled ‘Sussex Scrapbook’ by Christopher Horlock was both fun and informative. His monthly article in Sussex Life magazine bears the same heading, and he had some strange and interesting happenings to relate to us. We started the evening with a slide of Queen Elizabeth II opening the Brighton Marina some years ago – giving us a royal connection with Sussex. Chris then took us on a journey of Sussex churches pointing out the graves of famous people in their burial grounds, ie. the Queen’s dressmaker Norman Hartnell at Clayton and a gentleman named Everest - he had calculated the height of this famous mountain and subsequently had it named after him - buried at St Andrew’s in Hove. Etchingham church has the oldest weather vane and the cricket commentator and journalist Henry Longhurst is buried at Keymer. Henry Longhurst had lived in Jack Windmill – the well-known twin of Jill. Charles De Ville – the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo (several times in fact) lived at 46 Fort Road, Newhaven. I wonder if the present owner of this property knows about its previous famous occupant? Although he won so much money, he still died almost penniless! Does anyone know the true origin of the Long Man of Wilmington? The earliest information goes back to the 16th century but it is still unclear what he represents and for how long he has adorned a hill in Sussex. Rudyard Kipling was a well-known resident of Rottingdean before he moved to the lovely Batemans residence. The visitor book there has the letters F.I.P. next to some of the names – which meant ‘fell in pond’!! Chris closed his talk with his favourite story about two 7-year-old boys who became lost in a ferocious snow storm. They had walked over the fields covered in thick snow, only to find themselves lost; then a man looking like a shepherd suddenly appeared from nowhere and guided them back to the road leading them home. No one knew who this man was or where he came from – was he their guardian angel? After this event the boys were known as the Heavenly Twins. The last slide of the evening was of a sign on a garden gate which read ‘Trespassers will be composed’, which gave us all a smile! We shall certainly ask Chris to return sometime to relate part 2 of ‘Sussex Scrapbook’.

Work is continuing apace at Seaford Exchange Project, the community garden in the Crouch Gardens, on making ready for a classroom installation later in the year. The big job at the moment is getting the ground prepared for full paving of the area. This means perfecting the access so that it is suitable for people with mobility impairment. Of course none of this would have been possible without the very generous contributions from Chandlers Building Supplies and the Rotary Club of Seaford, to whom we are extremely grateful. Seaford

Meanwhile, work in the garden by our enthusiastic team of helpers is showing huge payback for the time and muscle power expended. Like gardeners everywhere we have found germination difficult this year, but thanks to the sheltered position of the garden behind its high walls and our excellent compost production – thanks everyone for bringing us your kitchen waste – production of salad crops, peas, beans, potatoes and tomatoes is in full swing, and in the polytunnel tomatoes, peppers and aubergines are growing like triffids. To prove that nothing is wasted in this prolific garden, pumpkins for October’s Pumpkin event, plus courgettes and squashes, are being planted up on a temporary mound of soil produced by the classroom works. Seaford Exchange Garden is open throughout the year on Wednesday mornings from 9.30am until 12.30pm and also on Saturday mornings during August between 10am and noon, when produce is cut fresh and made available for a donation, so please call in and see what puts the smile on our faces.

Swindells Announce New Initiative for Small Businesses Whether a butcher, baker or candlestick maker small businesses are vital to our local economy writes Joe Fackler of top local accountants Swindells. In these difficult times, control of costs is so important and many small businesses understandably feel that they cannot afford the fees charged by accountants like Swindells. As a result too many small businesses feel unable to seek help and are sinking under the increasing burden of regulation, or may be simply paying too much tax, because they are not getting the right advice.

We have invested heavily in new systems which will enable the Small Business Unit to offer a really cost effective solution, our clients will continue to receive all the benefits of personal advice and support and a personal relationship with their accountant. The new unit will be led by Partners Joe Fackler & Philip Moorey who are both active in the business community and have many years experience dealing with smaller businesses. “Too often I have met businesses who have said – “I would like your help but your firm is too big and too expensive to deal with me” said Philip “well we are not, and through Swindells Small Business Unit you will get all the benefits of a firm with 85 years experience but at a cost that will be affordable and give you peace of mind”.

We have given a huge amount of thought as to how we can help and support these small businesses, especially those who may never have had their own accountant. So, we have created the Swindells Small Business Unit designed specifically to meet all the basic accountancy and taxation needs of the sole For more information visit trader and small partnership the unit will offer fixed www.swindellsaccounting.co.uk 128x90ad-business _swin-ad 01/12/2010 13:57 Page 1 monthly fees covering all services. or call Joe or Phil on 01323 892549

USING THE LAW TO RECOVER DEBTS • If your customer does not dispute the debt, • If your paper trail is weak, try to find yet fails to pay, you can take action in court to recover up to £5,000 with minimal costs under small claims legislation.

• Chase invoices when they become due. If your efforts continue to be ignored a month later, consult a legal professional.

• Ask the debtor if they dispute the invoice early on. If there’s no reply this will weaken any later argument they try to make, such as claiming the work was sub-standard.

• Talk openly about disputes. Meet up to get issues out in the open and be willing to compromise if the client has a fair point.

• Consider using the small claims court. If a debt is under £5k this can protect you from high legal fees. Losing parties are very rarely ordered to pay more than fixed costs and interest. Whether you win or lose you have to pay for your own legal advice, but fixed fee arrangements can keep costs down.

• If the debtor defends the claim a judge-led court hearing will be set. Written evidence is submitted in advance and on the day both sides are given a chance to describe their case. A judgment is announced at the end.

• Make sure you’ve got good paperwork. Purchase order documents, signed delivery notes and valid invoices help, as do emails from the client indicating they will pay. Note down conversations including dates.

a resolution outside court. The judge will decide the case on the balance of probabilities, not “beyond reasonable doubt” as in criminal cases. Without good paperwork you risk incurring legal fees and not getting your money back.

• You are legally entitled to charge interest on a debt from the moment it becomes due. If you want more than the national interest rate you must outline the percentage in your T&Cs.

• If the debt is above the £5k small claims limit take extra care deciding whether to issue proceedings. If you lose you may have to pay the other side’s fees. An experienced debt recovery specialist can assess the merits of your case upfront.

• Keep costs low with fixed fees. Ask for a full estimate before instructing a solicitor. The cost should never be a surprise. Neil Sorrell (right) is the Debt Recovery Manager at Mayo Wynne Baxter.

Dachshunds. Arlo & Buddy are both Chihuahua crosses, Arlo was given to us to re-home and Buddy came from the RSPCA in Patcham. They may be tiny but they have massive personalities and came to me with some issues, particularly fear and defensiveness around other dogs. We are working through these issues and it’s a long road, but we’ll get there! I take real pride in having come so far with them. My name is Jo Green and my aim is to provide a fabulous range of services including dog walking and pet/house sitting (including live-in daytime, evening and overnight). Pet sitting is a great alternative to putting your pet into kennel or a cattery.Your pets can go about their day as they would were you at home, sleeping in their favourite spot, being fed their usual food and not having to be caged or restricted at any time. This is particularly beneficial for animals that have come from a rescue centre background, who have experienced a significant amount of upheaval and anxiety in their lives, or simply for those dogs who don’t get along that well with others. Leaving our pets can be a worrying time, and my aim is to alleviate those concerns, and being present in your home will also deter burglars and ensure the house remains secure. I also provide a dog-walking service, along with cat feeding and other care services for animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, chickens, and birds.

About Me I have a Diploma in Animal Care, Welfare and Husbandry, have a wealth of experience in working with animals, and am a member of the Nationwide Associates of Registered Pet Sitters. Growing up within a self-sufficient family in London, I was involved in the creation of Mudchute Farm on the Isle of Dogs when I was a child. I’d go out walking my goats and sheep on Woolwich Common every day, be hands on during lambing season, and up at 6am each morning to feed my chickens. From the age of 11, I rode horses and owned them up until three years ago (including an ex-racehorse who needed complete rehabilitation and a rescued Arabian gelding, who’d had no training whatsoever). I also worked at my local stables as a teenager, then at a Shetland pony stud farm. Suffice to say, I think I would definitely be described as an ‘animal person’! I have previously volunteered for The Cinnamon Trust and Shoreham Dogs Trust and for the last 11 years, have worked within the Criminal Justice System so have an up-to-date CRB check. I live in Seaford with my husband, Steve, our dogs Arlo and Buddy, and Clarke, our cat. We’ve always had dogs in the family, ranging from huge boisterous Labradors to miniature

34

I am very much focused on reward-based training. I never smack my dogs or shout at them, but do correct them when they are acting in an undesirable way. They now look to me for guidance when they are concerned and I believe that ‘dogs are dogs’ and they can’t all be perfect, particularly in the case of rescued dogs. That’s not to say I don’t cuddle my dogs or consider them as my children. I do and they have a wonderful happy life. Clarke, our black cat, also came from a rescue centre. He was troublesome, to say the least, and had been overlooked for months. He’s been with us for 7 years now and loves his life. We still get caught out by his teeth and claws sometimes but he’s a wonderful cat, who brings us much joy, laughter, and live mice as gifts in the middle of the night! Pet Set Go! has been set up to really focus on you and your pet’s needs. I look after them just as you would look after them yourself, so you can leave them knowing that their care will be consistent and in consideration of their individual personalities.

The lecture the Reverend Dr Andrew Mayes gave in St Peters Church Hall on ‘The Centre of the World Jerusalem Then and Now’ was a huge success and because of numbers all lectures in the future will be in the church and just tea in the hall. As you know these talks are to help keep our medieval church in good repair and thanks to everyone we have raised some money to assist this project I am grateful to all our speakers and tea and cake makers and to those of you who are attending. May I also thank Fran for printing these reports. Our next speaker will be the well-known Sussex author David Arscott, who writes books and guides on Sussex. Copies of his books will be available to buy on the day. This lecture takes place on the 4th of September in the church at 2.30pm. Tea and home made cake will be provided in the hall. This will be the last lecture this year but already I have three speakers lined up for next year.

On Thursday 5th July, members of the Meridian Freemasons Lodge received a warm welcome from the officers and cadets of 1218 (Newhaven) Squadron when a cheque for £1,050 was presented by Worshipful Brother Doug Ovard to the Commanding Officer Flight Sergeant Ashley Catt. After an approach to the Meridian Masons by the fundraising civilian committee of Newhaven Squadron, chaired by ex Sqn Ldr Peter Bonfield RAF VR(T) Ret., the money was raised directly from raffle proceeds at the Worshipful Masters Ladies festival, held in May, and was subsequently matched by Sussex Masons in the Province. Ashley said, “The money raised will enable the purchase of laptop computers which will allow the cadets to undertake online examinations, bringing 1218 Squadron up to date and in line with other ATC organisations. The remainder of the money will go towards the purchase of a new set of bagpipes, to complement the squadron’s band which is in the process of being reformed and modernised.” The Air Cadets at Newhaven, aged 13 to 19, both male and female, study air-orientated subjects, including electronics, engineering and flight simulation. Further activities include flying, gliding and target shooting, sport, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, camps, fieldcraft and adventure training. Cadets can also obtain BTECs in Public Services and Aviation studies. For further details visit: www.1218aircadets.com or phone 01323 414485. SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB At a recent meeting of Seaford Martello Rotary Club held at Seaford Golf Club President Reg Dove presented the club’s, “Rotarian of the Year” award to Dave Winsor. Members of the club had nominated him as the most deserving recipient of the annual award, for all his hard work during the past Rotary year . This was the last meeting of Reg’s year and he then handed over the reins to the incoming President , Julian Turner. This is Julian’s second term, having previously been at the helm of the club in 2006/07. He said “It’s a great honour to have been elected for the second time in our short history. This is a significant year for our club as we enter our 10th year; we gained our Rotary Charter on the 30th March 2003 and I am sure all our members and Rotary friends are already looking forward to our 10th Anniversary celebrations next year. As I reflect on our past history I feel very proud of what all our club members, both ladies and gentlemen, have achieved. In this coming year we will continue to strengthen our local community and charity support network and develop further our international charitable activities”. The club actively seeks new members; to find out more email: seafordmartellorotary@gmail.com or telephone: 07877 590301 Rotarian Dave Winsor (left) receiving his award from outgoing Pres Reg Dove.

This project may produce information that could usefully be passed on to the relevant responsible body, as well as being a valuable learning experience, enabling members to gain a better understanding of the way the Cuckmere and its flood defences work. Also planned for the weekend of 1st and 2nd September are a history and archaeology trail (which will be led by Julian Martyr), and an art activity. In addition, there

Living at Cuckmere Haven

Part 12

Well, it’s almost a year since we moved here and what a year it has been! Living here has had such an impact on us; we have both changed our work to suit our environment and have discovered the joys of living (an even) simpler life. When we first moved here, we were both going into Brighton regularly to work. I had cut back on quite a few of my commitments but, within a couple of months of living here, I realised I wanted to do all my work from home. Being self-employed has afforded me that flexibility, thank goodness, and I’m so glad I made the decision. Robb has also arranged his working hours so he only has to go into Brighton twice a week and the rest of the time he focuses on his growing driftwood carpentry business. Because every day here is different, we quickly realised that we didn’t want to miss a moment of it. There would be no point living here if we spent most of our days elsewhere. So whilst our new working arrangements have meant less money, we are richer in other, more important, ways. There is an Epicurus quote we have in the cottage:

By the time you’re reading this, it will have been and gone, but right now, Robb and I are about to set off delivering leaflets. Described by the brains behind such a venture - director Deborah Warner and actor Fiona Shaw - as ‘a coastal installation celebrating love poetry and landscape’, it will see the arrival of 120 glowing tents at Cuckmere, emitting light and poetry, for visitors to enjoy at night. Maybe some of you will have come down for a night visit and felt moved by this art installation.

‘Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined! As you simplify your life, so the rules of the universe become simpler.’

There will be eight ‘peace camps’ across the UK in some of our most beautiful and remote coastal locations. I like events like this that help us to appreciate the beauty all around us. Robb and I often chat to the many walkers who come to Cuckmere and it is a place that moves people deeply. Being near the sea is refreshing and cleansing and the brisk winds blow away the cobwebs, both literally and metaphorically! I love hearing all the stories about Cuckmere – why it means so much to people, what they love about it. People often talk about a family member no longer with us who found it special and the fact they come here to remember them. Or they come for the views, to play on the beach, to rockpool, to have a romantic picnic, to enjoy the wildlife, to escape, to take photos, to fill their lungs with sea air. Because it means so much to people, we know how lucky we are to wake here every day and that’s why we have arranged our lives to maximise our time here.

My sister gave me this quote (slightly abbreviated from Thoreau’s book ‘Walden’) in a frame and we still have it, faded almost to obscurity from being on the galley of our boat and now here at Cuckmere. Even though we can’t now read the words, they still resonate in our hearts. Cuckmere has given us another opportunity to go confidently in the direction of our dreams.

By the time you’re reading this, I hope that we have a glorious summer with blazing hot sunny days. I knew in this column I’d have to mention the weather – ‘hot’ topic everywhere! - because there’s been a deluge nearly every day and we’ve taken to getting the winter clothes out again. But fingers crossed for a lovely, warm, long Indian summer…

One thing that has us excited and inspired in equal measure is Peace Camp, part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Lucy Corkhill

‘One is rich not through one’s possessions, but that which one can with dignity do without.’ I have a habit of living my life through meaningful quotes and have them up around the house to remind me to stop and take stock every so often. One quote that saw us moving from a country cottage in Stanmer, to the risky adventure of buying and living on a small boat, was from Henry David Thoreau:

Who’s Who In Seaford?

Anthony Morgan-Jones, Retired Chartered Surveyor and Artist Anthony has lived in Seaford for over 40 years and is a member of the Society of Sussex Painters, Sculptors & Engravers, one of the oldest art societies in Sussex. He was a partner in a firm of Chartered Surveyors after first training in London. Previously a Rotarian he is now a member of Probus. He has also been a member of Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club for 43 years and is a member of St Leonard’s Church, Seaford. Anthony is married to Elizabeth and has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. What do you like best about Seaford? The intimate medieval street plan giving a good feeling to the town centre. The area is a marvellous mix of sea to the south, down land to the north with Cuckmere and Ouse valleys to east and west. It’s a paradise. Unlike many seaside towns the seafront is somewhat wild and unspoilt by ‘urban aggrandisement’. But like all small towns some way from large centres the people are friendly and helpful. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Anything by Vivaldi. What book are you reading? The Bible. What is your favourite film? Riddle of the Sands based on the novel by Erskine Childers. Which living person do you most admire? John Sentamu – the Archbishop of York. What is your favourite smell? Turpentine and linseed oil mixed for oil painting. What words or phrases do you most overuse? The word ‘indeed’. What is your greatest extravagance? Black chocolate. What is your greatest fear? Decrepitude in old age. How would you spend a million pounds? On my children. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Admiral Nelson. What makes you sad? Craftsmen who do not care and do a rubbish job. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Attending Holy Communion: it puts everything into perspective. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Keep going. What would your motto be? Take heart. Anything else you may like to include? I am looking forward to Artwave Open House Exhibition at the end of August with Maureen Black who is an engraver. See page 23 in this issue of Seaford Scene!

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. Samplers Samplers originated in the 16th century as a means for a needlewoman to remember different types and styles of stitching. They were later used by girls to show off their embroidery and sewing skills. Most date from the 18th and 19th centuries and they can not only be decorative but can also provide useful family history information, often the name and age of the needlewoman. Seaford Museum has a variety of colourful samplers on display, the oldest being nearly 200 years old. Selected by Kevin Gordon Museum Summer Opening Times from April 7th: Sundays and Bank Holidays. 11am to 1pm and 2.30 - 4.30pm. Wednesdays and Saturdays. 2.30pm - 4.30pm. SEAFORD TWINNERS ELECT A NEW CHAIR The Seaford Twinning Association said a grateful “thank you” to retiring Chair Mark Brown last weekend, after eight years at the helm. Mark, now busy as a town councillor, had served as ViceChair, Chairman and Treasurer. He continues with the Treasurer’s post. In his place the members at the AGM elected Town Crier Peter White as Chair. Peter was one of the three Seafordians who launched the twinning association in 1982. He first visited the area in 1980, and became Stadtausrufer (Town Crier) of the German town of Bönningstedt two years later. Peter was delighted to present Mark with a card and two gifts: an inscribed whisky glass and a personalised bottle of Islay Single Malt Whisky, in recognition of all his hard work as Chair, and Vera Brown also received a floral gift. The new chairman outlined his hopes for the future, running up to the 30th anniversary of the twinning in 2014. He outlined suggestions for getting younger people involved in the links, and one school has already agreed to take part in emails with their German counterpart. He is also keen to involve Seaford clubs with their German counterparts, and would like to hear from any more people who wish to join those already expressing an interest. The All New Sunday Lunch Club On Sunday 15th July, the All New Sunday Lunch Club opened its doors and welcomed over 40 senior citizens of Seaford. It was great turnout and all the diners enjoyed the delicious Sunday roast that was cooked by Steve Mitchell of Ab Fab Food. The Sunday Lunch Club diners commented that the meal was “delicious”, “a real treat” and “a lovely lunch.” The tables were beautifully laid out, with real napkins and fresh flowers - “a lovely treat!”. Organisers of the Sunday Lunch club would like to thank those who have supported them and the volunteers who helped to make the lunch run so smoothly - Udo, Hilary, Alan, Sandra, David and Pauline. This once-a-month get-together aims to bring older people in Seaford together, to get out of the house, to chat, socialise and make new friends over a delicious Sunday roast lunch, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

There are a few places left for the August Sunday Lunch so if you would like to attend, please contact Madeline on 01323 892327. You will be most welcome. Looking ahead to September, Madeline and Steve will be making an important announcement regarding the Sunday Lunch Club - watch this space! The price for the lunch is currently £5 but the aim is to make the price as low as possible and it is hoped that this fee can be reduced through sponsorship and donations from local businesses and organisations. The club is still looking for sponsors who are interested in supporting this worthwhile event If you are interested in helping this good cause financially, please contact Madeline on 01323 892327...as every little helps!

Summer Savings Oh the long glorious days of August! If you’re like me, all you really want to do is stretch out on a rug in the garden with a good book, host the odd barbecue and enjoy any sunshine summer deigns to throw our way. So you might think it odd that I’m now going to ask you to turn your thoughts to winter for a few minutes. I do have your best financial interests at heart though, and in these difficult economic times, that’s got to be worth a few minutes of anyone’s time…right? The long days of summer are not just lazy for us; they are also a quiet time for lots of tradesmen. Think about it; as soon as the temperature drops in mid October, people will begin to think about cold snaps and central heating. They’ll probably arrange for their boiler to be serviced...along with everyone else. Wouldn’t it make more sense to get ahead of the game and have your boiler serviced whilst there isn’t a queue? If your boiler is more than fifteen years old it probably needs to be replaced and you may well be able to negotiate a nice discount at this time of year. While you’re at it, if you have an open fire or a solid fuel range,

60

order fuel now, in bulk, while you can take advantage of lower summer prices. Summer is also a good time to organise a chimney sweep. There aren’t too many about and they tend to be swamped in the autumn as people think about using their fireplace again. Energy costs continue to rise week on week, so why not use this summer to improve your cavity wall and loft insulation? Most energy providers offer a free home survey and advise where you could save money. Think about it now and you’ll have plenty of time to organise improvements before the first frosts. Kerching! Summer is traditionally a quiet time for financial advisers and companies specialising in investments. Perhaps you could benefit from a financial makeover. It might sound odd, but this time of year is also quiet for train and coach travel, so you might be able to pick up a bargain ticket or two. Summer has always been a quiet time for politics, so now is a great time to tackle your MP about any local issues which are bothering you. And finally, if any of your electrical goods have seen better days, now is the best time to check out your local high street for a great deal on an upgrade. By Sarah Davey

Are we going to have a Pier on Seaford Seafront? Analysis of the public’s views on the Seaford Community Partnership’s Seafront Exhibition, held in March, are now available. The exhibition was visited by about 800 people including more than 100 children Great enthusiasm was shown for many of the children’s and students’ ideas, for example, the provision of larger sand pits and even a paddling pool on the beach at the same level as the promenade will be examined. The need for more shelters was an important theme to emerge and various ideas were on display, such as, “upturned Boats”, and Seven Sisters-shaped walkways and associated shelters. The large chess pieces were much admired as was the volleyball games area. The ideas put forward by the Community Partnership’s Seafront Theme Group were all popular but the favourites were: to enhance the present large outlet groyne near Splash Point so it is more like a pier (see picture); and the creation of a naturalistic Beach Garden opposite the Salts. The need to improve the maintenance of the footpaths and to be more creative with the surfaces of the promenade walls were also endorsed. Many visitors to the exhibition emphasised the need to enhance the natural beauty of the bay by retaining its unspoilt nature. The questionnaires completed at the exhibition identified the two most important improvements as being to have a more sheltered beach with better access to the water’s edge and the provision of more indoor refreshment facilities overlooking the sea. Unfortunately, extensive work by the Environment Agency’s Flood Defences experts over the past two years modelling large groynes, etc, has shown that, although millions of pounds would need to be spent, none of the models provided sufficient shelter to remove the need for the annual movement of shingle along the beach by lorries and none would solve the problem of steep access to the water’s edge. Discussions will need to be held with the Environment Agency to see if any short-term measures can be devised to create more gently sloping “shingle ramps” for part of the summer months when waves are usually less strong. Unfortunately, it is relatively easy to have ideas to enhance the seafront but It is much more difficult to get the money to do so! There has been a lack of investment on the seafront for many years. This has stemmed from the Environment Agency and the councils at all levels treating Seaford beach and seafront as a sea defence and not recognising the recreational, and hence economic, importance to the town. The attitude seems to have been if it stops flooding and is cheap then it will do for Seaford. It is largely the seafront and beach which bring people to live, work and relax in the town. We have a wonderful natural resource and if we are to attract investment to the town, we need to focus on the links between the beauty of the seafront and the success of the local economy.

64

The Environment Agency now recognises the importance of seeking ways to enhance the amenity value of the beach, Lewes District Council has recently recognised the importance of the seafront to regeneration of the town, and the Town Council is now giving a high priority to improving the seafront. The ideas on display at the exhibition now need to be developed and costed in greater detail before decisions on feasibility and implementation can be taken. The likely availability of funding is a crucial issue in deciding the best way forward. Discussions are now necessary with the three levels of councils to prioritise further development work, to seek funding and to determine possible implementation timescales. In addition, other funding bodies need to be approached as well as permissions sought from the bodies with responsibilities for the beach and seafront. With only minimal amounts of money, it is possible for volunteers to secure modest improvements to the seafront. During the rest of 2012, volunteers will continue with beach cleans and maintenance and enhancement of the new Beach Garden. Some projects would only require modest amounts of money and, provided interested parties agree, may be suitable for development at low cost by working groups, for example: a chess, petanque, volleyball area; an entertainment area adjacent to the Martello Tower; and enhancements to the inner panels of the promenade walls. Before enhancement of the Splash Point Outlet Groyne, to make it more like a Pier, is possible, formal approval from various bodies will need to be sought. A possible source of funding has been found so an application needs to be made for a grant so we can see if funding can be agreed. This is the top priority for the Partnership. Many of the ideas at the exhibition need to be designed in more detail, their feasibility considered and costings produced. For example, popular ideas were the provision of more shelters, play areas, sand pits and a paddling pool. The most suitable part of the beach for such enhancements is the wide stretch of beach opposite the Salts. This needs to be considered by Seaford Town Council which is responsible for the Salts and it is for it to decide whether any of these ideas should be taken forward. There is a possibility of some funding being available for children’s play facilities.

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

There are three relatively large projects that would require significant external funding or implementation phased over a number of years. Firstly, the provision of outdoor refreshment facilities overlooking the sea (possibly as part of a Beach Hut project at Bonningstedt or a small building elsewhere). Secondly, improvements to the footpath, walls and street lighting. Thirdly, building a Gateway to the Town Centre from the seafront It seems, at the moment, that Lewes District Council’s recent bid for funding of £1.2 million from the Coastal Communities Fund needs to be successful before these projects could get off the ground. The possibility of more working with Brighton University on the seafront and the town is currently being explored. It has not yet been possible to meet with Seaford Town Council to see whether they agree with the Partnership's ideas for enhancements to the seafront and whether moving them forward is a priority for the Council among the many other calls on their time. Modest improvements to the seafront are possible within the next two or three years by using volunteers as much as possible and working closely with the various authorities. More significant improvements will require external funding. Much consultation is now necessary to see whether the Partnership’s views are shared by those with the authority to make changes. The Partnership already has a large database of people willing to help with practical tasks and people with other skills, such as, project management, funding but further people are required. Please contact Keithblackburn@live.co.uk if you require further information or can help in any way.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

Telephone: 01323 417518 The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN20 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise; however many are unaware that the ten-year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed; they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers abeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom, take the A259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

U FIT BLINDS MADE TO MEASURE, DIY ONLY ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER AND DIRECTIONS AS MOCKFORDS ABOVE. When we asked customers why they purchased u fit blinds, a few of their replies were: “Other firms said, ‘why fit blinds yourself, we fit them free of charge?’ What they should have said is, ‘fitting is included in the price of the blinds’. I bought one from u fit and saved £40; the only way to get free fitting is to fit it yourself”. “I went to a DIY superstore for a vertical blind; they didn’t have they size I needed, which meant I would have had to cut it down, which sounded like a lot of hassle. A mate said “go to u fit for a made-to-measure budget blind, they have 1,000 cloths to choose from”, so I did”. “I was confident about fitting a roller blind but not so sure I would get the measurements right, until I heard about u fit’s unique system of checking the measurements, which is so simple it must be foolproof”. “My wife and I derive a lot of pleasure from furnishing our home to a very high standard. I am a retired engineer and immediately appreciated your hand made deluxe vertical blinds tracking system and the attention to detail in sewing the hems with colour co-ordinating thread.”

Seaford Kurlers Welcome to the Seaford Kurlers update for August, 2012 - it’s enough to say that it is supposed to be summer time. Rain or shine Kurlers look on the bright side and still keep playing no matter what the elements throw at us. At the time of writing we still have the Seaford Fun Day to come on 22nd July at the Downs Leisure Centre. The day is usually a great success. We will look forward to it. In August we will be taking part in Wave Leisure Para Games Day. Last year we helped the teams that were taking part to get the best out of the sport. It was a very rewarding day for us and all the teams enjoyed the whole event. We are sure that this year will be good. It is the year that we host the Olympics – we hope that Olympian spirit will work for us all on Sunday 19th August. Some Seaford Kurlers will be attending a coaching course at the leisure centre on the 9th August. I have arranged for a coach from the GBKA (Great Britain Kurling Association) to show us the finer points of the game. The course is being part funded by a grant from Wave Leisure which we were awarded earlier this year. Seaford Kurlers meet every Tuesday at 2pm for two hours at the Downs Leisure Centre. All adults of all degrees of ability are welcome to come and see us in action and try the sport for themselves, The first visit is free of charge. Thereafter the cost is £2.50 per session with an annual membership of £5. Contact June Wood, Secretary on 01323 895376 or email: sally1989@tiscali.co.uk.

Running Commentary... I have long believed that running is part of what makes us human, that we were born to it and that given a chance, young children instinctively want to run. Proof of that, if proof was needed, was there to see at Seaford Primary School recently. As part of their celebration of the Olympic Games it was suggested to the boys and girls in years 4, 5 and 6 that they might like to run a marathon in the form of a continuous relay. Sixty-five children volunteered to have a go and joined me once a week in preparing for the event. I was certain that they could do it but didn’t want them to do just a mixture of jogging and walking… and take all day to complete the 26.2 miles so I gave them the added challenge of running it in under 3 hours, a target that most club athletes aspire to. The school playing field was just large enough to mark out a 200-metre track, and that meant running 211 laps to cover the distance. To go under three hours required them to average 51 seconds or less for each lap… in other words… to maintain an average speed of just under 7 minutes per mile. On the day of the event the weather was warm and sunny, and hopefully, starting at about 9am, it would be over in time

for lunch. Each lap would have two runners and the fastest would ‘pass on the baton’ for the next two to set off. Suitably clad in their school games kit and race numbers pinned on, it began with a flourish of enthusiasm, and encouragement from the watching crowd of spectators that had gathered. It was a truly amazing sight to behold and very soon they had got ahead of the 51 seconds per lap pace. Running a marathon, even as a continuous relay, makes big demands on a runner. The need for stamina, perseverance and stubbornness is intermingled with mental and physical strength, teamwork and individualism, and on this occasion, add to that, youthful exuberance, sheer enjoyment and more than a dash of competitiveness, not forgetting high-fiving some of the spectators as they passed the Little Poppets Pre-school Nursery area. At times this relay marathon showed the same highs and lows, and emotionally charged moments as a conventional marathon and while some were clocking 36, 38 or 40 seconds, others were taking 50, 55 or 60 seconds to do their lap. It was magnificent, intense and relentless and whatever their talent for running, they all worked hard and extended themselves as they endeavoured to meet the challenge of the relay marathon head on… then, like marathon runners who have paced themselves well, the laps began to be completed quicker, perhaps because they sensed victory. Then the last lap arrived, with Oliver Funnell and Olivia Goodale bringing the challenge to an end and crossing the finishing line in 2hrs 37mins 28secs. The sense of achievement was sky-high and the race numbers were worn with pride and quiet satisfaction for the rest of the day, but their memories of the day… will last a lifetime. Rosie Waters Seahaven Yoga Rosie graduated from the Vajrasati teacher training course in 2009 and holds a 500hr Yoga Alliance accredited teaching qualification. Rosie has also completed further training to teach students with ME and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, elements of which she uses with students who have other limitations to their practice. She is fully insured to teach. Rosie started regular yoga practice in 1999 and she trained in Iyengar yoga for two years, and subsequently attended Hatha, Scaravelli, and Khundalini classes. It was the Vajrasati Yoga School which brought everything together, and where she found her spiritual home. Rosie’s teaching focuses on using the breath to deepen and extend the body, mind and spirit. She encourages students to work meditatively, listening closely to their own bodies and breath, and using their inner resources to develop postures only as the body allows, and without grasping. Her current experience includes teaching more mature and less able students. Rosie currently runs two drop-in classes in Seaford at The Archway, and one in Newhaven at The Summerhayes Centre. They are suitable for people of any age and level of experience including beginners – and are also great fun!! She also teaches small groups and individual students in their homes or at her studio in Newhaven. Rosie has taught yoga holidays in Spain for the last two years - this year we will be enjoying ...Sun, Sea and Yoga in West Crete from 25th September to 2nd October 2012.

Why Water Works Experts tell us that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? The human body is made up primarily of water. Around 85% of the brain, 80% of blood and 70% of muscle is water. Given these facts, it is easy to understand why maintaining our body’s water levels is so important. During a single day an average person loses around 2 - 4 litres of water in the following ways: urine 50%; sweating 34%; breathing 14%; and faeces 2%. In order to keep our body working at its optimum levels, this lost water needs replacing. Most of the lost water (47%) is replaced through drinks, a further 39% through food and the remaining 14% comes as a by product of metabolic activity.

What does water do? Water helps remove the dangerous toxins that our body takes in from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the chemicals used in the various products we use on our skin and hair. It cushions and lubricates our joints and carries oxygen and nutrients into our cells. Water also helps regulate our body temperature and assists in digestion.

What happens if we don’t drink enough water? If we don’t maintain the correct water levels, our bodies will start to dehydrate. Like a car’s need for oil, if the oil level gets too low, the engine will start to run rough. If the oil runs out all together, the engine will stop running. It is the same with our body. Therefore it is easy to see why it is very important to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Everything you would expect from a beauty salon plus much more...

Symptoms of mild dehydration include the following: • Reduced alertness • Reduced concentration • Slower reaction times • Tiredness • Headaches • Feelings of nausea • Low blood pressure • Constipation • Dry skin.

Drinking water can help us lose weight Believe it or not, it’s true! If we are dehydrated the performance of the blood, liver and kidneys is affected, with the end result that the body can’t metabolise the fat stored in cells as effectively, so the fat remains in the body. In addition, water is a natural appetite suppressant so drinking plenty of natural water (not in tea, coffee or fizzy drinks!) will help us to feel full and not so likely to eat. So, let’s do what the experts tell us and look after our wonderful bodies by drinking plenty of water! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Get ready for Summer!

Seahaven Lioness Club The end of June marks the end of the administrative and financial year for the Lionesses, when a new President and Committees take office. To celebrate this event members enjoyed a meal at Seaford Golf Club, in company with NP&S Lions Club, after which the outgoing President, Maggie Chitty, handed over the chain of office to Lioness Audrey Clark. Audrey was a founder member of the club and one of its first presidents, back in 1995, but has nobly agreed to take on the role once more. She thanked Maggie for all her hard work over two years as president and presented her with a gift from the club. Elsewhere members continue to be busy with fundraising activities. Most of you will be familiar with the stall in Broad Street on Saturday mornings, which, surprisingly, given the weather we have been having this summer, has been going well. We haven’t had to cancel many, though we have found ourselves holding everything down from time to time to stop it all blowing away! At the end of May, instead of the usual bric-a-brac, there was a plant stall, where members and friends brought along spare seedlings, cuttings, surplus house plants etc. This has become an annual event and is always very successful. Our big event, the Charity Golf Day at Seaford Head Golf Club was held on Friday 13th July (lucky for some!). This year we were raising money for the Sussex Air Ambulance - watch this space for a full report next month.

SPOILS OF WAR by Alan Morton London - Summer 1943 “Wotcha got?” said Billy, looking at Stanley enthusiastically. Stanley opened his palm and revealed a large piece of shrapnel. “Wow, good oh!” “Did you find anything?” asked Stanley, by way of reciprocation. “There’s a chair over in Tufton Street, maybe we could get that and put it in the camp. The ARPs are still hanging around over there.” “What sort of chair?” “Wooden, like what you sit on at breakfast.” “We could have a look later, maybe take it back, if there’s two of us, like.” The two boys spent the hour playing amongst various bombed out houses on the way over to Tufton Street, and when they arrived they inspected the chair which was lying half buried beneath a pile of bricks. They both agreed that it would make a fine addition to their camp, and they would return later in the day to see if it was still there. They didn’t find much else that interested them as they rooted about in the devastation, just some small pieces of shrapnel and a large spring that they thought would be worth keeping, and Billy picked up a battered lead soldier that was lying in the gutter. “I’ve gotta whole set of those soldiers,” said Stanley, “six there are, all painted and everything, really smart, not like ordinary soldiers’ uniforms…. red with big hats and rifles…. Dad reckons they’re Crimean; he says they’re dead good as well….my uncle, he bought them for me. Mum says he’s got pots of money….doesn’t know where he gets it from, and she says don’t’ ask. He goes up west…. comes back with loads of stuff…. I got an orange last week!” “Cor, I’d like to see those soldiers,” said Billy. “Yeah, alright, I’ll show ‘em you, get some bread an’ jam at the same time.” The boys skipped their way back to Stanley’s house in Silkstream Road, occasionally stopping to investigate a number of bomb sites on the way; they both picked up additions to their respective shrapnel collections. Stanley’s front door was still hanging by a single hinge following a hit on the house opposite, and they picked their way through some masonry as they stepped off of the street and into the parlour. “You been up to mischief?” asked Stanley’s mum, as she appeared from the back of the scullery, Stanley’s baby sister clutched to her breast. “No, Mum, good as gold we’ve been. Got any lunch for me and Billy?” “You can share a crust and a teaspoon of jam; between you

80

mind, your Dad’s go to have something later on as well!” The boys consumed the morsel before Billy disappeared to get his precious lead soldiers. When he returned he placed a small box on the table and slid the lid back. “Cor blimey,” whispered Billy, looking nervously around to see if Stanley’s mum was within earshot. He looked at the immaculate set of toy soldiers laid out side by side in the little wooden box on the table. “I’d give anything to have a set like that, or even just one or two. Let’s play with ‘em.” “Best not,” came a voice from behind them. “Keep ‘em nice,” said Stanley’s mother, “show your Uncle Jimmy you can look after fings. He’d appreciate that, and you might benefit for it as well, come next birthday,” she said winking, “just stand them on the table so Billy can get a good look.” Later that afternoon, having salvaged the chair from Tufton Street, Billy made his way home from their secret camp, but all he could think about was the gleaming lead soldiers in their little wooden box at Stanley’s. Later that evening he was awoken by the air-raid siren. His mum came into the bedroom and told Billy and his little brother to take a blanket and quickly go down the garden. Billy’s dad and his Uncle Jimmy had dug out the Anderson Shelter the previous year, and they had fashioned two benches covered with wooden boards that you could sit or sleep upon. It hadn’t rained to any degree for the past couple of weeks and the floor was now relatively dry, compared to last month when the floor had flooded. Tonight they were able to open the canvas bed on the floor so Billy’s mum and sister could sleep lying down, while Billy and his brother slept on the wooden planks on the bench seats. Billy had got used to sleeping in the shelter with his Mum, brother and sister, but his dad was at work all day and a warden at night, so he had hardly seen anything of him these past few months. They heard bombs falling in the distance, but the all-clear never came and they settled in for the night. It was dark as pitch when the next raid started, and the explosions were getting progressively louder and far more significantly, nearer. As the bombing raid intensified, they all huddled together on one of the benches, clinging together in a ball of fearful humanity, Stanley’s sister, too young to be conscious of any threat, slept throughout. Eventually, the receding drone of German bombers signalled the end of the night’s activities and they had come through it unscathed, although the crescendo of noise from the bombs had indicated that they had been lucky and there were those in the locality who would not have been so fortunate. Like many mornings in recent times, the first thing the family did once emerging from the Anderson Shelter, was to check the house for any damage. Mercifully, there was only some minor damage to the front of the house, but it was Stanley’s

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

dad, emerging through the gap where the front door had been, who told of the horrors in the neighbourhood the night before. “Addington Avenue’s copped it, and Hawley and Silkstream…. ruddy bad lot last night, that’s for sure. I’ve got to go out again soon…..to help out… just time for a brew… God knows, I need one!” As Billy’s mum passed him a large enamel mug of hot grey tea, she gave him a scolding look for using language in front of the children, but she knew that her husband would spend the day searching through bombed out buildings looking for survivors, or worse still, for those that hadn’t survived. When he had heard his dad mention Silkstream, Billy thought of Stanley and his mum, and hoped their house was not one of those that had suffered at the hands of the German bombers. After a slice of dry toast and a mug of tea, Billy headed out through the garden, over the fence at the bottom and made a beeline for Silkstream Road. As he cut through Addington Avenue, he was shocked to see that the entire end of a terrace was nothing more than a pile of rubble. Men in dark blue overalls picked there way across the devastation, occasionally lifting blocks of masonry to see if there was anybody underneath. When Billy reached Silkstream Road, he experienced a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. Stanley’s house, and next door, were nothing more than a mountain of bricks, and yet the houses either side were relatively unscathed. Billy looked up and down the road which was strewn with the detritus of bomb damaged buildings. Some people were just standing looking at where they had been living up until only hours previously. A woman was crying, two small children hanging off her legs. More dark blue figures picked their way across the mounds of bricks and mortar. A couple of policemen were trying to console the crying woman and did not notice Billy skip his way across the road and onto the site of Stanley’s house. His thoughts were of how he had stood less than a day ago on this very spot, eating bread and jam and looking at Billy’s toy soldiers. He didn’t know what to do…. or think. He hoped Stanley’s family were safe, but where would they be? Maybe they’ve gone up west to stay with his Uncle Jimmy. Then it occurred to him that the box of soldiers could be amongst the rubble. He had no concept of conscience, just the thought of possessing the little lead figures. As he started to search his way through the bricks that lay in a huge pile where the back of the house had stood, there was no suggestion in his mind of retrieving them for anybody other than himself. He also thought about the camp, and that if Stanley had copped it the night before, now it might be his alone, and all the treasures within. Although he was fixated on the toy soldiers, he was careful to put to one side anything that he came across that he might be able to give back to Stanley’s family, should they

return. There was a small teddy bear, probably Stanley’s little sister’s, and various kitchen utensils and other paraphernalia. Billy decided to store them in the garden shed, which, although damaged, would still provide a shelter. After about fifteen minutes, he saw something red beneath the dust and quickly retrieved the lead solider and cleaned it up. It had a couple of scratches, but was in one piece. Encouraged by this find, Billy continued to search through the rubble for another hour and he found two more of the lead figurines. Then approaching voices from the road signalled that it was time for him to make himself scarce, and he ducked his way through the back of the garden towards the alleyway that separated the rows of houses. On the way through he peeked into the Anderson Shelter. It was still intact, but there was nothing inside. Billy thought about the words he had said only yesterday, I’d give anything to have a set like that, and wondered whether he really did mean, anything. The thoughts and events of the previous twenty-four hours were something he would occasionally reflect upon throughout the rest of his life, but for the present all he was really aware of was the weight of the lead soldiers in his pocket as he ran home.
