SEAHAVEN VETERANS & ARMED FORCES DAY Saturday 28th June saw the Martello Fields on Seaford’s Sea Front with crowds gathering for the 2014 Seahaven Veterans and Armed Forces Day. The event is organised by Seaford Town Council along with the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George for everyone in the District of Lewes and surrounding towns and villages. The Inspecting Officer was Mrs Chantal Wilson, Deputy Lieutenant for East Sussex. The parade formed up at the Martello Tower at 12.15. It was lead by two drummers from the Air Training Corps and eight Standard Bearers. Then the contingent of Veterans was followed by detachments from local units of the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps. They marched past the Deputy Lieutenant, into the Martello Fields. During the inspection in the arena she was accompanied by Cllr Mark Brown, Mayor of Seaford, Laurie Holland President of the Seahaven Branch, and Burma Star Veteran and Seaford Resident, Major Peter Gadsdon MBE MC, President of the Alfriston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion. Following the inspection Mrs Wilson gave an inspiring address, recounting the meaning of the day. The Seahaven Branch’s Chaplain, Revd David Farrant, lead the assembly in prayers before giving the exhortation. This was followed by Last Post and Reveille sounded by two musicians from Seaford’s Silver Band. Invited guests included the Mayors of Newhaven, Peacehaven, Telscombe and the Deputy Mayor of Lewes. Also present was the Chairman of Lewes District Council and the Deputy Chairman of East Sussex County Council. Guests, along with veterans who had been on parade, were then treated to a buffet prepared by Seaford Baptist Church and the Seaford Charity, Waves.
4
Amongst the many stalls and facilities was the Tavern in a Tent organised by the two Seaford Rotary Clubs. Visitors could visit military stands as well as civilian ones, such as the Police, Coastguard, National Coastwatch Institute, Seaford Lifeguards and others representing many of the local charities. A funfair provided entertainment especially for the youngsters, who also had a chance to drive a mini-tank. Military buffs could also look at a number of military vehicles on display around the Field and see the machine gun on display by the Sussex Military History Society. The crowds were entertained either side of the parade with music from the Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra, followed by displays by the dogs from the Fantastic Four Flyball Team, and then a synchronised foot drill by the young Army and Air Force Cadets. A local Dance Group gave us a touch of glamour with modern dance, then Seaford Lifeguards put on a demonstration of rescue and resuscitation. Finally, Rob Willis gave his Elvis impression. For this he was dressed in American Army uniform and made a grand entrance into the Arena in a Second World War American Jeep. Chairman of the organising committee, Major Bob Peedle MBE, said “The weather was just right, cloudy for much of the time, but no rain, and the sun came out to enhance the afternoon’s events. It was a great privilege to once again be involved with the Town Council in providing this tribute to the armed services, both those serving today as well as the veterans who have served King or Queen and Country in the past. Photos from top clockwise: Seahaven Branch President, Laurie Holland approaches the saluting base with Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Chantal Wilson. In the background are Parade Commander, Major Bob Peedle MBE and the Chaplain, Revd David Farrant. Rob Willis gave a very realistic tribute to Elvis Presley which got many feet tapping around the arena. Following the parade, the Standards are marched off under the command of the Seahaven Branch, The Royal Society of St George Standard bearer, Frank Holland.

Splash Point repairs to begin soon
Seaford Town Crier takes on the World Seaford’s Town Crier has had a busy summer season so far. And then he takes on the world at a tournament in Chester in midAugust.
Seaford Town Council and Lewis District Council have recently been working closely to organise repairs to Splash Point in Seaford. This will make it accessible to the public once again following damage during storms earlier in the year. Whilst neither Council owns the facility, it was deemed to be a project in need of public funds as it is so well used by local residents and visitors alike. Both Councils agreed to donate £10,000 to the project. The contract was today awarded to local company C J Thorne & Co Ltd of Uckfield, a company that have undertaken similar projects in Brighton and Eastbourne. It is expected that all the work will be completed within the next six weeks or even sooner.
Sussex Day in June was a busy event, with the traditional tongue-in-cheek but celebratory Seaford-Sussex Cry with the Mayor at the Martello Tower. Crowborough was the next target where they have the “Sussex Charter” read – an anonymous modern celebration suitable for any town. That led to a 9-minute live discussion on BBC2’s Andrew Neil Politics Show about County identity and flags. Peter’s uniform was seen across the nation against the backdrop of the Royal Pavilion.
The Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Mark Brown said, “This is great news and shows how the Town Council is now working well with our partners to get things done for the people of Seaford.”
The Town Crier, as Seaford’s Serjeant at Mace, led the guests into the Mayor’s Civic Service, and gave “The Call to Prayer”. That task involves carrying the Mace in front of the Mayor and the principal guest, in this case the Lord Lieutenant. He was also on duty at Seaford’s Armed Forces Day on the Martello Field.
Seaford Town Council Leader and District Councillor, Paul Franklin, who coordinated the efforts of both Councils said, “I am delighted that we have all been able to work together to get this far and look forward to seeing Splash Point open again for everyone to enjoy.”
The Rail 150 celebration, marking 150 years of Railway between Brighton and Seaford, gave Peter the chance to “cry” on Seaford, Lewes and Brighton Stations. The Brighton “cry” echoed around the lofty roof trusses and brought everyone to a halt!
Once the works are completed, the area will once again be open to the general public to use.
A Celebration of Sussex Bells in Alfriston in July was another chance for Seaford’s most distinctive bell to be heard. And now Peter takes on 30 Criers from across the world at a week-long 4-contest Tournament of Town Crying being held in historic Chester in mid-August.

Rotary Club of Seaford President Ray Takes Over
On Tuesday 1st July Ray Hazan became President of the Rotary Club of Seaford, and on the following day, at a Club meeting, he addressed members. “Firstly, I want to thank all the many guests who have joined us. They make a special day even more special. Thank you so much for your support. It is a miracle day. Little could I have guessed when I moved down to Seaford some years ago, that today would take place. I am honoured and still find it hard to believe it is happening. I hope I shall prove worthy of your confidence in me over the coming 12 months. I just want to emphasise some of the points I made at the General Assembly. We must be careful not to overload members. There are many who step in and are always there and we are very grateful to them. Whilst mindful of our obligations to overseas projects, I want our emphasis to be on supporting the local community; enhancing the lives of the elderly and disabled and widening the horizons on the younger members of our community. After all, some of these latter could be Rotarians of the future. I hope our work is done with pleasure and the satisfaction of knowing that the icing on the cake is feeling what we are doing is worthwhile. Let us eat cake aplenty over the next 12 months.”
Safety in Action
Following the very successful Safety In Action Week held in May at Newhaven Fort between 23 local Primary Schools in the area, Cradle Hill School was judged the overall winner. The event is organised by Lewes District Council & Sussex Police and has been supported for many years by The Rotary Club of Seaford. This year our club gave an additional cash gift to allow the competitors and helpers to wear new high Viz jackets, which proved invaluable in identifying the school teams competing as over 800 children took part during the week. Also a new engraved shield was presented, for the first time, to Cradle Hill.
12
The purpose of the week was to teach children who were aged ten and eleven in teams the basic skills over ten disciplines to remain safe (emergency services were present) and they were scored on what they had learnt. At the award Ceremony, which was held at Cradle School on 23rd June, we were privileged to welcome Cllr Tony Nicholson, Chairman of Lewes District Council, and acting Head Teacher, Julie Foley, gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the school. Thanks are due to PC Carolyn Ross and Tony Still, senior environmental officer, who have organised the event for many years. Presenting the Shield and a cash prize to Cradle Hill on behalf of the Rotary Club of Seaford was President Michael Logan. Photo: Primary school children with adults from left to right; Julie Foley, Inspector Steve Tullett, Cllr Tony Nicholas and his wife Angela, Michael Logan, Carolyn Ross, and Tony Still.
Boot, Craft & Produce Fair
The June Fair was in many ways a repeat performance of the May event. It was a lovely day with wall to wall sunshine for around 50 stalls, and the many bargain hunters. The proprietor of the hot food van was also very busy. As a result we now have nearly £600 to help good causes and charities. Many thanks to all who took part. Our next Fair will be on Sunday 10th August with free parking, starting at 9am with refreshments available. The field will be open to stallholders at 7.30am with a pitch fee of £8. We look forward to seeing you there!
Seaford Primary School Chamber Choir
As a thank you to Seaford Primary School for their participation in the April Rotary Club of Seaford concert, the Club donated £100 to the music department for equipment. It was amusing to hear that music teacher Kate Steer ear marked the money for ear defenders! Photo: Seaford Primary School ear defenders

SUSSEX WATERCOLOUR SOCIETY Colour, colour, colour! From 23rd to 31st August 2014 The Foundry Gallery in Lewes is hosting the 37th Annual Exhibition of paintings by members of the Sussex Watercolour Society, as part of Lewes Annual Artwave Festival. This Exhibition shows the rich variety and diversity of members’ work, from traditional watercolour to the exuberant use of inks and acrylics. This is the Society’s first show at the Foundry Gallery, a wonderfully expansive space which will give the artists an opportunity to show a broader range of their skills, more of their work, and plenty of space for demonstrating their techniques. The Society was formed 37 years ago, the same year the M5 opened, the Sex Pistols were arrested, Tom Hardy was born, and Red Rum ran the Grand National for the third time (one for those pub-quizzers amongst you!) Founder members included Charles Knight RWS – who became the first President – Norman Clark RWS, and Francis Russell-Flint RWS. From traditional figurative to experimental abstract, and from the beautifully observed to the richly imagined, there is something in this show for everyone to enjoy. Expect the unexpected from the members of this highly acclaimed Society. Shirley Trevena, member artist, author of several books and videos on the diversity of watercolour, remembers her teenage bedroom was a shocking pink and orange, and still gets a buzz when two colours collide. “I can’t help myself,” she said. “I’ll deliberately sit a friend wearing grey next to an orange cushion, and relish the effect!” Nick Orsborn, the current chair of the group, whose beautifully vibrant paintings have graced many a wall, (and who’s business, Cicada, is a long and firmly established line of unique jewellery) describes his own work as “Joie de Vivre at the point of a brush!” Another member, Kate Osborne, on her own use of colour, added, “As a textile designer I worked with a huge colour palette, and have had to exercise a little more discipline since moving into painting, but only up to a point!” The Sussex Watercolour Society is always keen to
welcome new members. Although proficiency in watercolour is expected, current members’ skills are diverse, and include oils, acrylics, mixed media, sculpture and jewellery. Chairman, Sheila Marlborough, said, “Apart from the art, joining a group like ours provides contact with and support from other artists, a share in exhibitions and general friendship.” New members are considered at our AGM every October. To see members’ work or for information on submitting work go to www.sussexwatercoloursociety. com The Foundry Gallery 32 North Street Lewes BN7 2PH

We offer workshops, performances, refreshments, a games area for children as well as stunning art and craft. This year’s visual art includes work by Sarah Gregson, whose iconic Seaford images are extremely popular for both their humour and style. Kristina Stedman’s paintings and cards beautifully capture the atmosphere of life in Sussex. Karen Hall’s life drawings and paintings express her love and profound understanding of the human body. Bill Savidge’s paintings are both eclectic and beautiful. New to our Open House this year is Emma Taylor. Her collagraphs have a bold and naive style that reflect nature and the animals that surround her cottage in the South Downs. We are delighted that Richard Walsh is with us again this year, as his distinctive photography “with a twist” is always popular and a delight. Sandy Gray’s photographs give intimate glimpses of the world from her travels and our local beauty spots. In addition to fine art, we pride ourselves on the high quality of the craft we have on show each year. We have some wonderful, fine jewellery. Liz Cottingham has become known throughout East Sussex as the “spoon ring” lady, a title that does not fully describe the range and beauty of her silver jewellery. Anne Pickering’s jewellery of silver and semiprecious stones delicately reflect her love of the sea. Penny O’Neil creates amazing necklaces and bracelets from retro buttons and beads. Heather Bigmore loves colour, and this is stunningly shown in the wide range of her brightly coloured jewellery Finally, we welcome Vanessa Minall, who makes jewellery from the small inner workings of watches, creating delicate, lacy wonders. On the Textile side, Diane Costello’s handbags need no introduction. The ladies of Sussex flock to any event where her bags are on sale and we are delighted that she is with us again this year. Robin Shell has a new range of silk and fabric covered gifts including lampshades, wooden boxes and frames.

We are also pleased to welcome Seaford’s very own soap maker, Christine Lambert, who has recently started the Little Seaford Soap Company. Vinyl Mike will be selling records of the 50s 60s and 70s and, new this year, Second Chance will be selling high quality vintage and secondhand women’s clothes. We are overjoyed to be able to offer a Ukelele performance by Bruce Knapp and an Egyptian Dance by Linda Parker. And last but not least, visitors can join Wendy Rowcroft in the gazebo for delicious teas and cakes. Richard K Potter MA I have always loved art and design, and believed that we can all be creative and truly benefit from this
outlet, which can help us release trapped emotions,
through self-expression. Initially, I worked in advertising as a
graphic designer/illustrator working for four agencies in Kent, and producing illustrations for the Chelsea Flower Show and British Steel. I have also held exhibitions in London and Kent, and sold my work through galleries in Rochester, Lewes and Tunbridge Wells. After achieving my Media and Design degree, I took a PGCE in Art and Design, and taught for seven years.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY
FIFTY YEARS OF MUSIC By Mabel D Brown
There will be few dates in these personal jottings, which span almost 6 decades, of my membership of Seaford Choral Society. History does not concern itself solely with dates but with the events that gave them significance, and the people who created links with the past and the present. To be honest, however, I can no longer remember dates! One year will remain, though, the year when I walked into what was then an evening class under the auspices of East Sussex County Council Education Authority. That was my first meeting with the choir, rehearsing a work that was new and strange to me, by a composer of whom I had never heard – “Highways, A Cantata of Travel” by Gordon Jacob. The year was 1957 – the year of the Asian ’flu,’ and I had just joined Seaford Choral Society, making me one of the longest serving members.
the popularity for competitive Choral singing was on the wane. It probably led, however, to Seaford Choral Society ultimately leaving the protection of the Local Government and going private. In 1963 a committee was formed to organise and provide greater financial security. Cecil Coram was appointed as the first paid conductor at £10 per term in 1970 the Society finally became independent and, round about the time, I began to play a part in the running and organisation of the Society, joining the committee as Minutes Secretary. In 1984 I took the reins as Secretary proper and I continued until 2008 when the Committee decided to limit the services of its Officers to 5 years.
I was entering a very different group from the one that exists today. Michael Lane, the County Music Adviser for East Sussex, who later became the Society’s first President, was conducting. In those days, we rehearsed from 7.30pm to 9pm with no break for coffee; the venue was free and I cannot remember if we paid anything! We did not give concerts but prepared for performances in the Lewes Festival, run by the County as a competition during the 1960’s, and providing various categories such as madrigals, part songs, oratorio choruses, so that local choirs could compete according to their size and ability. A cup, which we once won, was awarded as an incentive. All choirs could participate in an annual performance in Lewes of a work conducted by such eminent conductors as Peter Gelhorn, Sir Adrian Boult and Eric Robinson, who presided over a concert performance of “Carmen” with Monica Sinclair in the title role. A highlight for me was the wonderful “St John Passion” which we sang in Lewes Town Hall under the direction of Dr Paul Steinitz in 1965.
Music Directors have come and gone over the years, but all have left their mark on the Society and its members. Some have remained on the outskirts of my consciousness because they have forged no permanent links: others have succeeded in creating the kind of relationship, based on mutual respect and trust, which inspires confidence. For example Michael Lane taught me to sing by introducing me to Rita McKerrow, a member of Glyndebourne chorus, who discovered that I was a soprano – I had been singing alto all my life because I could improvise and liked singing harmonies!. She became a wonderful friend until she died at the age of 80. She entered me for festivals; I won cups, after which I was given small solos by the Choral Society, especially at Christmas. I cannot recall which conductor allowed me to sing ‘I Saw Three Ships’ with Anthony (Rolfe) Johnson, and Second Soprano in Vivaldi’s Gloria with Elizabeth Lane, who followed her father as President. Glenys Ottaway, now retired to Wells in Somerset, was my duet-partner when Mavis Lister asked us to be the First and Second Witches in Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’, with a request that we wear black blouses instead of the usual white, and green scarves! I have a vivid memory of gazing out over a sea of faces in the hall of Seaford High School and willing the audience to SMILE! I recollect that Charles Spanner did not always remember to choose his own soloists, so the task often fell to me as Secretary to go through the piles of CV’s that came through the post. I was very glad when they were accompanied by tapes! No one seemed to complain about my selections, I was pleased to say. He did me one favour, though: he gave me my first paid singing job, at a wedding in Eastbourne, as his regular soprano was unavailable.
All good things seem to run out of money, and the Lewes Festival was, doubtless, no exception, or perhaps
And so it continues. Some hairy moments for us all under the baton of Gordon Lawson, who was a composer

and liked to use the Choir to perform his not always straight forward music; and Margaret Darwall-Smith, who joined the Choir at about the same time as I did, and has returned time and again to pick up the pieces both as accompanist and conductor in her own right. I am proud to count her among my conductor-friends, together with John and Val Underhill, our man-and-wife team, for whom I instituted and organised our website. I picture John and me sitting beside a roaring fire on a very wintry evening in my sitting room, taking it in turns to ring 80 plus members to tell them that the rehearsal had been cancelled – I had free evening phone calls! And Sion Parry, our present maestro, with his energy, enthusiasm and attention to detail, who I, as Secretary, helped to appoint.
Why did I stay? Because singing together brings its own rewards, the companionship of like-minded people, the mutual striving for the impossible, the inspiration and exhilaration of achievement. If you ask a man why he will climb a mountain, he might reply, “Because it is there!” I am no mountaineer, but I would hope that Seaford Choral Society will continue to “be there” for all its members, present and future, to experience and enjoy the same sense of fulfilment as I have done for over 50 years from a task well done. Mabel D Brown

Finally, I can reflect upon what they, in their turn, have given me. Not always willingly, I must admit, have I accepted. In return, I have given my time, my effort, my musicianship, my voice to the service of the Society to create the music from which we can all derive emotional and spiritual joy and satisfaction. I acknowledge with gratitude the help and support which I have received throughout my 57 years service, (less a couple of medically necessary absences) from many wonderful people.

Last Minute Artists show for Waves
An art and photography show at the Crypt gallery on the weekend of 14th and 15th June raised £720 for Waves Seaford Ltd, including refreshment sales from Waves HQ opposite art@thecrypt in Church Street. Seventeen artists, including a sculptor and some photographers, had work on sale at the exhibition put on by local man Bill Savidge, whose work often features at the Last Minute Artists’ pop-up weekend shows, and by Ray Finch, Director of Waves Seaford Ltd. Music was provided by local group, Band of Brothers. The photography included Lynn Gould’s capture of seven years of holidays on the Farne Islands, and I loved her shot of kittiwakes and a fulmar having an argument, watched by guillemots. Lorus Maver’s Sunset Poppies in oil provided a welcoming splash of egg-yolk yellow sunshine contrasted with delicate grasses, and another popular pop-up favourite, Sarah Gregson, showed a number of pictures of local downland scenes including Sid and the Twins, which had bold swirls of turquoise and green sea beneath an indigo sky. Les Ayres showed a neatness of touch and great understanding of landscape, while Emily Finch provided neat blue and white print studies of skeletal trees inhabited by jolly white and pink birds. Ray Finch, meanwhile, used mixed media, and I particularly liked Safe Haven of a cheerfully wonky lighthouse. Mary Plant offered neat rural homes and Bob Burchell a feast of lavender in a watercolour of great depth, which contrasted with his Art Deco style featuring strong colour blocks and form. Jenni Steggall’s Reflections watercolour had a pleasing simplicity in mellow gold and brownish black and Geraldine Edwards went off on a new track with linocuts in different colourways – I particularly liked her lion in dried-blood red. More please Geraldine. Jordan Sumner offered a lively partly coloured line drawing in black ink of a young girl that suggested naivety spliced with a growing
30
self-awareness, and Lisa Taylor displayed some iconic plaster and acrylic plaques of VW cars in vibrant colours. Viv Kemp photographed serried ranks of mushrooms and Mike Harrison captured Newhaven lifeboat heaving in a heavy sea, contrasting with an acrylic of a wide-beamed boat in tranquil water. I loved Bill Savidge’s forest study in acrylic and ink in smudgy deep green and his Koi, a circular swimmy pattern of watery purples, pinks and yellows in watercolour on tissue and a gesso base. Sue Casebourne’s Reichtag was an inside-the-glass-bowl effect of geometric glass and steel. But proof of success is down to footfall – 300 people attended – and sales, and as I left a happy buyer was clutching one of Helen Webster’s driftwood clocks. Time for another show soon, I say! Andrea Hargreaves Left: Watercolourist Ray Finch used a spatter technique for this painting, The Glade, above: watercolour on acrylic base, by Bill Savidge,

Communication in (buckets and) spades is the key to agreeing arrangements for children in the summer holidays With the summer holidays now in full swing, many parents will agree that managing holiday arrangements for children is often one of the most difficult tasks facing separated parents. Not only do parents have to consider the practical arrangements for the day-to-day care of the children, which in itself can be tricky when both parents work, but also their plans for taking the children away. Early and constructive communication is the key to avoiding disputes and unnecessary money on lawyers and courts. Here are a few tips to consider when trying to agree holiday arrangements:
1. Plan early. Don’t put it off and leave it to the last minute. Ideally the arrangements for the summer should be agreed by the end of June at the latest. Give yourselves plenty of time to negotiate and reach a compromise.
2. Talk! Separated parents naturally find it difficult
5. Remember the details. Having a paper or online calendar available showing the important dates can make things much easier. Ensure times, dates, venues, collection and pick ups are all written down somewhere and you abide by them to avoid confusion and dispute later on. If you’re going away, provide the other parent with details of the travel arrangements and where you will be staying. 6. Keep child focused. The law is clear that arrangements for children should be based on what is in their best interests rather than the ‘rights’ of parents. 7. Be practical. Accept that you may have to work around several diaries due to work commitments etc. Be flexible where possible and exchange annual leave dates as soon as they are known. Try to avoid the children missing any school time.
8. Don’t book anything until you have agreed the arrangements between you.
9. Remember the passports! Check they are valid

FUN AND GAMES FOR SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE Fun and games were definitely on the menu recently at Seaford Community Church, home of the Storehouse. Periodically the children in the church undertake a project to raise money for a good cause. This time they chose somewhere close to home; Seahaven Storehouse, which grew out of the church’s ministry. The children had lots of ideas on how they could persuade their parents, church members and friends to contribute, and decided they themselves would do things they normally did not do, or hated doing, as a sacrifice to raise some money. One young man who loathes peas, ate a whole cupful of them in front of a cheering audience, who watched his disgusted expression with glee and then donated generously. Several of the church leaders had their faces painted and that brought another shower of coins. One twelve-year-old agreed to stand still for two minutes – a feat which proved hard to sustain… but people gave anyway. And three young ladies promised not to speak for five minutes, and so unusual was this that people rushed to give their one pound coins. There were also games for all to participate in. Both children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the show. But there was more. Di Bradford, who heads up the children’s work at the church, said, “We wanted to help the children to learn about the value of money and how it can be turned into food to be given to those in need.

So the following Saturday morning we took them to Morrisons and they were able (with a little guidance) to buy the kinds of tins, jars and bottles which the Storehouse needs for its clients. They had a marvellous time trying to work out what they thought hungry families would like to eat.’ In all the children raised £216.16 which was turned into food, and it helped many of them to think about other youngsters in the area who might not always have enough to eat. If you would like to donate food items to the Storehouse, please place your cans in the bin in Morrisons. Photo: Children and helpers celebrating the food they bought with the money raised.

Many roads will now be receiving newsletters for the first time ever. This is a great achievement and we very much appreciate the help of the network of deliverers. (A list of the roads currently not covered is printed to the rear of this newsletter). Our Membership currently stands at just over 1100 and there is a steady flow of new memberships and renewals coming in, so we also expect to reach our second goal, which will be another significant achievement in the expansion of NHW. If you are not a member, please consider joining us and help show that we represent all Seaford and Bishopstone residents. If you have any general queries concerning membership, then please contact the Membership Secretary, Martin French, on 01323 873946 or at martin.french@post.com. For 2015, we should have a new website, online subscriptions and membership database up and running and will set new targets for 2015 in due course.
LOCAL CRIME / POLICE UPDATE:
We receive regular updates and information from Sgt Stuart Mullins of Sussex Police, who is based here in Seaford. He has advised us through Briefing Notes that Crime Figures in Seaford thankfully remain low overall, with no significant increase in any area (Thefts, Burglaries,
36
ASB). Most offences are “one off ” opportunist occurrences and there is no evidence of any trend or organisation behind them. He continues: “Now that Summer has finally arrived I would like to remind all residents about the dangers of leaving ground floor windows open, either at night or during the day when no one is at home. If you have window locks that allow you to secure windows in an open position, please use them, if not, do not leave ground floor windows open if you go out or at night. Also now that people are using their gardens more, be careful about leaving rear doors insecure if you are working in the front garden. We have recently had a number of thefts of items left at the front of houses so do not tempt fate and leave things in plain sight unless you are prepared to loose them. Last year there were a few thefts of garden furniture so it pays to secure such items when you have finished with them for the day and remember to keep your sheds and outbuildings locked. If going out for the day, or even whilst at home, keep your cars secure at all times and don’t leave the windows open. Never leave any bag of valuables in the car and if you have to do not leave them on display, especially if you are leaving your vehicles in a rural or beauty spot car park.” Meanwhile, Lewes District Police have highlighted the crime of thefts from sheds, outbuildings and garages. This is referred to as burglaries other than dwelling (OTD). Please make sure, where possible outdoor items such as bikes, tools, even expensive garden ornaments are property marked. Property marking involves marking your valuables with your postcode and house number and taking photos of these items. This can be a deterrent to thieves alone, but if you are a victim of a theft there is a chance items marked could be returned to you. Contact your local Police officer for a free property marking pack. We welcome 2 new PCSOs in Seaford. PCSO Mark Gilbert and PCSO Daniel Turk. Please make them feel welcome in our town and if you see a new face

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’ in uniform say hello! We also say goodbye to PSCO Noel Daniels as he leaves Seaford to become a Police Constable. We all wish him well in his future career. Lastly for this section, please remember all of Seaford is restricted to 30mph. SpeedWatch were out 15th June recording vehicles’ speed. They were also out along Marine Parade, 22nd June. 14 vehicles were recorded exceeding 35mph with a top speed of 49mph. In May there were 99 vehicles recorded exceeding the speed limit, 83 letters of speeding were sent out, with the maximum speed recorded of 56mph!
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS:
These meetings are open to all residents, and are chaired by your local PCSOs. The next Central Police Panel meeting is Tuesday 17th September 6pm in the Council chamber at Seaford Police Station, 37, Church Street. Seaford West Police Panel Meeting is to be arranged for midJuly and Seaford East is to be arranged sometime in August. The dates will be advertised in Seaford Police Station and the Sussex Police website as soon as dates have been arranged.
NO COLD CALLING ZONE:
We would like to remind you that Seaford & Bishopstone is a single “No Cold Calling Zone” and you are fully entitled to ask unwanted callers at your home to leave immediately. If they persist, you are equally entitled to call 999 and report this as an incident and ask for police attendance. There is a supply of door/window stickers available from the Police Desk if you haven’t already got one and would like to display one.
SCAMS:
There are many, many scams in operation, usually by phone, via the internet and emails, personal callers and by unsolicited post. Whilst we cannot cover them all, our advice is that you should never be duped by any offer or notification you are not expecting, and to exercise extreme caution if replying, or accepting an offer. A few of the latest common Scams to avoid are as follows:
l
Maybe a hoax, but you get a phone call giving you good news and asking you to call back a number commencing with Area Codes 0809, 0284 or 0876. – These are special Premium Rate numbers and will clock up a hefty bill. l Emails advising you to reconfirm your Bank details – This is to enable the scammers to try and clone your cards. l A call from a “Bank Official” asking you to confirm your PIN number or password – genuine banks would not ask for such details by that means of communication. l A letter arrives advising you that you have won a completion you did not enter and to send an upfront “admin fee” to release the winnings.
FACEBOOK:
We now have a Facebook page for all you social networkers out there. Our page is called Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch. Please “like” our page. In the future this will be updated regularly with news, events and information we would like to share with the community.
LOCAL EVENTS:
We (SandBNWA) are planning to attend the Seaford Family Fun Day 20th July and the Donkey Derby 25th August. We extend our congratulations to the organisers of the Seaford Railway Line 150th anniversary celebrations. The whole day was a great success and brought many visitors to the town.

The last in the popular series of East Blatchington Lectures also promises to be the biggest attraction – it will be given on Tuesday 5th August, by Simon Brett, the author whose 80 books include the popular comedy detective tales and Radio 4 series featuring the usually struggling actor, Charles Paris. Paris, memorably played by Bill Nighy, is an actor who spends more time “resting” than working. His relationship with his wife is what he calls “semidetached”. And his love of whisky is often his undoing. But what he does well is stumble across crimes, and then solve them. And makes it funny for us. . . His creator, Simon Brett, once of Dulwich College and Oxford University, joined the BBC as a radio producer, and worked on a number of the most popular radio comedies. But it was while he was with ITV and writing a series about Lord Peter Wimsey that he was enticed to think about writing crime fiction himself. So he did, and the successful Charles Paris series is partly the result. He has also written ten Fethering Mysteries, and six Mrs Pargeter novels. He claims that his main recreation, apart from reading, going to the theatre and The Times crossword, is playing (his words) deeply incompetent Real Tennis. As usual, the lecture will be at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, and is open to everyone. It starts at 2.30pm. Tickets are £5, including refreshments, available on the door, or from the Seaford estate agents Newberry Tully. But the advice is to get there early, this could well be a sell-out. SEAFORD’S EPITAPHS: INSCRIPTIONS AT ST LEONARD’S CHURCH DECIPHERED A major new resource for local and family history
Have you walked through St Leonard’s churchyard and wondered what was written on those weathered and blank-looking stones? All is revealed in a new book. A volunteer group, the Seaford Monumental Inscriptions Group, has painstakingly mapped and recorded all the surviving inscriptions. The church may date from the eleventh century, but the oldest inscription we found dates from 1639. Stephen Elphick’s headstone survived by being built
into a Victorian heating duct. It was rediscovered, its lettering still crisply legible, when the church was re-floored in 2006. One grave is known to be older, a mass of bones from a plague pit discovered by chance in 1857 when a new grave was dug (for Charlotte Harison) beside the porch. The bones of the plague victims were reburied “northeast of the chancel”, unfortunately still without any marker. The churchyard has continued to change in modern times. Old grave markers were often wooden. A rail (a plank on two posts) marked the mass grave of mariners drowned in the 1809 Seven Ships disaster. Luckily for us, Henry Simmons recorded it in 1860, when the rail still existed. We can see from this how short-lived both monuments and inscriptions can be, and appreciate how vital it is to record what we have. The inscriptions have been collected into a book which will prove indispensable for local and family history. It contains the seeds of some sad stories; the two teenage daughters of the Rector of Heighton who died a fortnight apart in April 1876; the three infant children of Barbara and Edward Hood who all died in October 1800. In contrast there is the euphoric, flag-waving epitaph of the swashbuckling Admiral Walker, who tells us with pride – and on two monuments, one in the churchyard, one in the church – that he fought alongside “the immortal Nelson!” A Testimony of Regard: Monumental Inscriptions at St Leonard’s, Seaford is available at £12.95 direct from Rodney Castleden at Rookery Cottage, Blatchington Hill, Seaford BN25 2AJ. Free local delivery can easily be arranged; just drop an envelope through the letterbox with a cheque payable to R. Castleden and a note of your address. For postal delivery, add £3. The book is also available online at www.lulu.com Photos: left – “Testimony of Regard”, above – this chest tomb tells us that Sarah Chambers, ‘full of Days and Hopes of Happiness, changed this Life for a better’ in 1744.

Parenting After Parting Your relationship with your partner may have ended but if you have children together your role as parents has not. Parenting can be challenging at the best of time let alone doing it with someone that you are separating from so where on earth do you start! Every family is different and the arrangements for your children should be tailor made to suit your family’s individual circumstances. The focus of any arrangements must be on your children’s needs and any decisions about children should be based solely on the children’s best interests. There is no one solution that suits all families. There is no rule about how responsibilities for looking after and raising children should be shared and divided, except that the overriding factor to consider is what is best in the interests of the children, not the parents. It’s not easy to work out parenting arrangements with a former partner when a relationship breaks down, so if you are struggling to reach an agreement don’t worry, that’s not unusual. Here are some tips that can help parents work things out: 1. Try and develop a shared set of values, this can make things easier for your children because they hear consistent messages and are not exposed to high levels of parental conflict. To help work this out spend time thinking about what you hoped for when the children were born, what you hope for them now and when they are older and what sort of people you would like them to become. Your parenting values may not be identical, but try to respect each other’s values. 2. Try to address issues instead of hanging on to anger and hurt. Moving forward is important for you and your children. 3. Put your feelings towards your former partner aside, talk to them respectfully as the parent of your children. When discussing issues, avoid blame.
44
4. Listen to each other’s opinions and ideas before responding. 5. Don’t spring issues on each other out of the blue, let each other know beforehand and arrange a time that is mutually convenient to discuss and follow up in writing to try and minimise misunderstandings about what was said. If you and your former partner are unable to work things out between yourselves and you feel like there is no way forward seek help from a family dispute resolution practitioner – such as a mediator or collaborative lawyer. A mediator can help facilitate discussions between you and help find a solution. Alternatively the collaborative law process maybe able to assist, this is a process in which you and your former partner each have a collaboratively trained lawyer and you all have a shared commitment to avoid court proceedings, aiming to work together to sort things out face to face. The goal with both mediation and collaborative law is to enhance communication in order to lay the foundations for a healthy post separation relationship. Seeking some legal advice from a solicitor who is a member of Resolution may also help, they can advise you on the best way forward and if necessary help you negotiate a parenting plan, or as a last resort if all else fails, represent you within court proceedings. NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN & SEAFORD LIONS CLUB June is the end of the Lions year and so it is all change. Sunday 28th June was our changeover meal. We had a wonderful lunch at Seaford Golf Club with the Lionesses, who also change their president. This year is a first for the two clubs as the Presidents are a husband and wife team. Lion Trevor Gomersall became the Lions’ President and his wife Brenda is the new Lionesses’ President. It is our aim to work more closely together in our efforts to serve the local community better. We do not intend to amalgamate the clubs, just work together. The Brian Smith Achievement Award was set up 17 years ago in memory of a former President of the Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club. It seeks to recognise young people between the ages of 6 and 16 who have won through “against the odds”. Each year schools and youth organisations are asked for nominations for children who have shown exceptional bravery in combating a serious illness or disability, or a young person who cares for a sick or disabled person, or someone who has learned to play a musical

The Lion’s President also presented two Runners up Awards to Amelia Bough and Annabelle Izzard. Seaford Donkey Derby Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014. Programmes will be sold around the houses during August. Please give generously as this is one of our major fund-raising events and without the funds we will not be able to serve the community. The day is one of enjoyment with all the fun of the fair, stalls and, of course, donkey races with a tote. Come and have fun. Events start at about midday, the first race is at 1pm. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups, with or without a driver, i.e. if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Saturday 23rd August – Sunday 7th September 2014 (during Lewes Artwave). Tuesday – Saturday 10.30am – 5pm, Sunday 12noon – 5pm. Open Bank Holiday Monday. Closed Monday September 1st. Preview and Meet the Artists on Saturday 23rd August 12.30 – 2.30pm Sheila and Peter Marlborough will be exhibiting new paintings in an exciting, diverse and colourful show, following their successful exhibition at the Hop Gallery in 2012. This new exhibition is part of Lewes Artwave 2014. They each have a different way of interpreting landscape, by painting from memory or brief sketches. Peter paints with oils, and likes to create the atmosphere and feeling of place, while Sheila is known for her colour and semi-abstractions, painting in acrylic and mixed media. There may also be some pieces of 3D work on show. The couple met at the St Ives School of Painting in 1982, and return every year to meet up with artists friends there and to refresh their creativity. They work every day at home, as the urge to paint is a necessity and part of their daily lives. Top: Sheila Marlborough “Enumeration”, below Peter Marlborough “Dryden”.

Maggie Edwards uses oils, acrylics, chalk and watercolour to capture the passionate nature of our local sea and landscapes. Penelope Oakley uses acrylics, charcoal and gold leaf, creating hauntingly transcendent images. Amanda Lawrence sculpts and then paints tiny, exquisitely observed birds, and Pippa Burley sculpts boldly sensitive and thought provoking sculptures of the human form. A sneak preview of their work will also be showcased from 4th July until 18th August at Deans Place in Alfriston. This prestigious 14th-century manor house, rich in comfort and history, boasts substantial hospitality areas for large or small groups, an enticing restaurant, and beautiful grounds. The show will also be sponsored by Amber’s Florist, Seaford, and Chestnuts Tea Rooms, Alfriston, who will be providing visual delights and tasty morsels at the Private View. The exhibition, aptly named Quartet, is unning from Saturday 19th July to Sunday 18th August, 10am to 5.30pm. The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter. MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB
Martello rotary club get involved with junior lifeguard programme for year 6 students
The Martello Rotary Club of Seaford has funded and helped to organise a lifesaving course for year 6 children from local schools. The Junior Lifeguard Programme is aimed primarily at children from seven years old and above. The course, which has been designed by water safety specialists at the National Lifesaving Academy based in Newhaven, is designed to ensure that every child in the country has essential water safety skills to keep themselves safe and know what to do in an emergency. The programme features swimming and lifesaving skills supported by water safety education, allowing participants to enjoy swimming as an activity and, vitally, to protect their lives should an accident occur in or out of the water. 26 children from Annecy Primary, Chyngton Primary, Seaford Primary and Cradle Hill Primary School attended the course at Newlands School and the Martello Rotary Club has received very positive comments from representatives of the schools. Rotarians Tony Reynolds and Nick White were on hand to help out on the day, and President Janice Vince thanked the lifeguards for running the event. She said “As we live by the sea and with the warmer weather, many children are on the beach. It is important they go informed of sea dangers and know what to do until a life guard or an adult can be summoned. This course has given them that knowledge, hopefully making them safer on the beach.”
Martello Rotary Club of Seaford builds a directional plaque on Seaford seafront
The Martello Rotary Club of Seaford has built a directional plaque on the seafront at Seaford with a legacy from the late Claire Ivory, a Past President of the club, who sadly passed away in 2009. Claire had a great interest in Rotary the world over, and the plaque
58
is a directional /distance indicator showing the direction and distance in miles from Seaford to cities located in the geographical areas of Greenland, America, Europe, Africa and Australia. The plaque has been constructed by Rotarian Shaughn Arkwell from a legacy left by Claire in her will, and was designed by Rotarian Anthony Reynolds in conjunction with Tilley Stonemasons Ltd of Brighton. It will be the property of Seaford Town Council. It was unveiled recently by Claire’s two brothers. At a short ceremony Seaford mayor Mark Brown said: “I would like to thank Martello Rotary Club and the late Claire Ivory for this wonderful addition to the seafront. The Town Council will gladly take on its future maintenance.”
Seaford Youth Sports Awards
The Martello Rotary Club are running a project to highlight young people who have achieved great things in sport. There is so much young sporting talent within our local community and we would like to celebrate this with a SPORTS AWARDS EVENING on Saturday November 22nd at Seaford Head Upper School. There are 5 categories: Young Sports Volunteer of the Year, Young Sportsperson Showing Excellent Committment to their Sport, Most Improved Sportsperson of the Year, Team of the Year and Young Sportsperson of the Year. Nominees must live, attend a school or represent a club in Seaford or Alfriston. This is a good time to reflect on the sporting successes for this year going back to September 2013. This could include individuals or teams who have achieved great things, both in school or above and beyond at club, county or national level. We would love to know who these young athletes are! There is a prize of £200 for the winning school or club and trophies and prizes for the winning teams or individuals. We hope to make it a glittering affair with many local VIP’s and sporting personalities, SO PLEASE NOMINATE NOW!

You can go to the website and nominate online: www.sportsaward.martellorotary.org.uk or email: sportsaward@martellorotary.org.uk for further information. There are also still opportunities to sponsor this new and exciting event. Nominations must be received by 12 midnight on 30th September 2014.
Martello Rotary Club -Rotarian of the Year, and a new President At a recent meeting of the Martello Rotary Club of Seaford the outgoing President Janice Vince presented Clive Rimell with the Club’s “Rotarian of The Year” award. The club members had nominated him as the most deserving recipient of the annual award for his efforts in the past year. Janice then welcomed Dave Winsor as the new President for the Rotary year 2014/15. Mandy Davis becomes President-Elect.
Dave is a Founder member of the club and has served in several roles, including Secretary, where he has looked
after four previous Presidents. His special interests are in organising the club’s annual Proms concert and the Tavern in the Tent events. He is a retired Director of a specialist engineering company previously based in Seaford, and he has lived here for 35 years. His interests include Rugby, where he is Club House Manager for Lewes Rugby Club. His chosen charities for his year of office are Children With Cancer Fund and Care for the Young Carers.
The Club meets on Monday evenings at Seaford Golf Club and welcomes new members. For more information email: plbseaford@aol.com or call 01323 894553 or 07802 305158. Photos above: Clive Rimmel receives his award from outgoing president Janice Vince, below – the new president, Dave Winsor.

Running Commentary... It doesn’t matter whether you are an international athlete, a good club runner or casual jogger, it would have all begun with a conscious decision to go for a run. How it progressed from there would have obviously varied from runner to runner, perhaps based partly on our own hopes and aspirations but also on subsequent experiences that may have discouraged or inspired us. I have no idea what percentage of runners then find themselves taking part in fun runs or competitive events, or why some runners are not interested at all in entering races. Personally, I have found all the races that I’ve done, and that must be over a thousand, enjoyable and rewarding. They have been a way of measuring my progress and fitness, and of immersing myself in the sociable and empowering camaraderie amongst runners and their shared wisdom. There’s a lot to be said for jumping in at the deep end and entering a big city marathon as your introduction to taking part in races, although, entering small fun runs can be a much easier and simpler way in. The Alfriston Watermeadows fun runs, for instance would be the ideal event for any Seaford Scene reader who runs but has not entered a race before. Because it’s easy to get to, inexpensive, a flat course through scenic countryside and doesn’t require a lottery chance to have your entry accepted and, because there is a junior run too, it’s perfect for most of the family to take part. The date of the event is Saturday 23rd August, starting at 2pm. If you are interested, the registration desk opens at 12 noon on the Alfriston Tye (by the church). The first event is the 1.6km junior race, followed at 2:30 by a 5.3km race. Further details will appear in the local press and the Alfriston Festival Week programme. As with most races, runners aren’t compelled to go as fast as possible but at whatever pace suits them. If you enjoy the experience of the event and decide to do other races, it’s good to vary the type of race you enter and importantly, save your fastest running for them, don’t waste it on just training runs. Taking part in races will also improve your running. Check out the Sussex Races website for an endless supply of events, large and small, and long and short distance.
Watching a primary school sports day recently and having followed the exploits of the junior section of the Seaford Striders for many years made me realise the future of our sport of running is in good hands, as long as we can maintain their enthusiasm. It is quite an inspiring sight to see children burst onto the playground at the start of their breaktimes, unleashing their pent up energy that had been held captive during their lessons. By the end of the break they will usually be sufficiently subdued and satisfied to resume lessons. Unfortunately, this is mainly a primary school occurrence, however those senior schools who do encourage physical activity during breaks tend to reap the benefits by having more relaxed and focused classes. When the junior Striders meet on a Wednesday evening at 6pm their energy levels seem undiminished and they are ready for whatever challenges they are given. Fun runs, like those at Alfriston, offer a chance for all children, not just club runners, to do what comes naturally, and run for fun. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

Winners were Barbara Bradley and Tim Wood, runners up were Molly Baker and Ian Leonard. The photograph shows the winners Barbara Bradley and Tim Wood, with the club shield. They will each take home a keepsake shield. The next event on our calendar is Wave Leisure’s Family Fun Day on 20th July. A few of us will be in the sports hall for a couple of hours from 2pm till 3pm to demonstrate the game of New Age Kurling. There will be plenty of time for people to “have a go” at the noble game. Seaford Gardening Club Now is the time when our gardens are full of colour and produce – the results of all the hard work of recent weeks. Let us all continue to enjoy the summer weeks ahead. Kevin Gordon, our speaker for June – gave a very interesting talk entitled “Unseen Seaford’” He retired from the police force seven years ago and since moving to Seaford has been interested in the town’s history, together with that of the surrounding area. We began our journey through the past with slides of the Martello Tower, built in 1876. This building has had many uses – as a skating rink in the 1900s together with a tea room named the “Polar Bear”. It now houses the Seaford Museum, of which Kevin is curator, and is a very interesting place to visit. Access to the museum for all visitors is soon to be made possible as it has recently received a lottery grant to build a slope and lift for disabled visitors. The seafront has changed in past years and several hotels, eg. The Esplanade, which burned down in the 1970s, and the Viking and Beachcomber have all vanished. Clementine Churchill attended a school in Seaford and after marrying Winston they spent many happy holidays in the town. Kevin even had a photo of them on the beach, taken in 1911. The River Ouse once ran along to Splash Point before a huge storm altered its course. The area is currently undergoing repairs after the 2013 storms. We were then shown slides, taken in the 1960s, of the Salts which had a paddling pool and boating lake. It is still a pleasant recreation area, serviced by a very good café, and used for sporting events, children playing, people exercising their dogs etc – there is even an adult exercise park!!

Kevin then took us into the town with slides of Dane Road, showing the old bus depot (health centre), cinema and small shops (Morrison’s). Henry Coxwell’s balloon factory mostly made up of women workers – was in Richmond Road. The Congregational Church (opposite Tesco) was built in 1893 and is now two halls with facilities for various activities. Broad Street and East Street have greatly changed over the years but Cameron’s Chemist shop still exists. In the 1880s the landlord of the former “Hole in the Wall” pub, off East Street, was arrested for selling Opium! Kevin caused some merriment in the audience when showing us spectacular photos of the town taken, not by him, but the three crane drivers on the sites of the new Library, the former Beachcomber hotel and Cheney’s Nursing Home. Well worth the cheek required to persuade them to take the photos!
Seaford Station has recently celebrated 150 years of trains coming to the town. I am sure many of you would have attended the two days of celebrations when two steam trains visited the station. Very exciting. An old slide of Vale Road, shown as a country lane, was of special interest to me, having lived there now for 39 years – very different today! In 1967 a ring road around Seaford was proposed, but luckily fought against by the residents of the town! We were given many snippets of information – did you know that the War Memorial site was once known as the Cats’ Cemetery? I certainly learned a lot of new facts about Seaford. It was a very enjoyable, informative evening looking back at the town’s history. Kevin has already been invited back to speak to us in the near future. The Club does not meet in July and August so our next talk will be in September (information will be in the next issue). Information about the Club can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visiting www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

The Great British Barbeque
by Julian O’Vegetables
Putting meat on a barbeque on a British summer’s day seems to tempt fate. It’s like doing a rain dance. So it certainly pays to hedge your bets and have food that tastes equally as good from a regular oven and plenty of space in the freezer. That said, being a bloke (cos it usually is) desperately trying to get charcoal to ignite, mates watching while swigging from bottles and cans and offering varied and normally unhelpful advice and jeers, while wives and girlfriends tut-tut and sip white wine and shake their heads is a rite of passage. And good fun too. I prefer the kettle barbeque, the one with the big round lid. It gets the heat around the food and bakes as much as it grills with the charcoal further from the cooking grill. This helps to cook the food all the way through, avoiding the burnt--outside-raw-inside food, so often the result of using the flat types.

A cookery page needs a recipe, so here’s one for the barbeque, I don’t like to give quantities because everyone’s tastes are different, so use as much or as little of following ingredients as you like to make a delicious marinade for lamb cutlets, although I find this works well with chicken too. This is from “Curry Easy” by Madhur Jaffrey. Use finely grated fresh ginger, crushed garlic, lemon juice, salt, cayenne pepper, garam masala, mustard and olive oil. Mix the ingredients well, and then rub the marinade onto the cutlets. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight. Lamb cutlets and chicken drumsticks are ideal because the bones make ideal handles to hold the food while eating. I like finger food because space is often at a premium in the garden of a small house, so there may be little room for tables and chairs. Besides, people mix better when standing and the free hand is useful for holding drinks. Cook the food in regular small amounts to give your guests a constant but unrushed supply of tasty morsels. There’s nothing more off-putting than a mountain of rapidly cooling meats. When the charcoal has reduced to just a few glowing embers – with good timing on your part – at sunset, it’s time for dessert. Put a few unpeeled bananas on the griddle with some slices of fresh pineapple. If, like me, you prefer cheese to finish, put whole camemberts in earthenware bowls and put these on too. Replace the lid and leave to bake slowly for 20 minutes or so. Serve the fruit how you like, but if you’ve gone for the camembert, serve with chunks of fresh crusty bread to scoop out the melted cheese. Eat it with a glass of good red wine, while watching the sun go down at the end of a perfect day. Enjoy! Julian O’Vegetables is an alter ego of Alan Lindsay

Refreshments will again be available together with items for sale from the Seaford Allotment Society and our friends at Paradise Park.
JOBS TO DO IN AUGUST
3 Finish harvesting what’s left of any “early” potatoes and start to dig up the first of your “main” crop. 3 Onions are ready for harvesting when the foliage collapses and the neck is not soft and sappy. Lift the bulbs with a fork. Leave on the surface to dry. Take under cover if the weather is wet. 3 Slip a tile or something flat under courgettes, marrows and squashes to keep off the soil. Try training courgettes up a pole, tie plant carefully so as not to damage it. 3 Start deadheading fuchsias and remove all seedpods. If left on these pods will sap the energy of the plant and it will stop flowering. 3 Remove the growing tips of tomatoes after four or five trusses. At the end of the month cease feeding and start to reduce watering which will stop fruit from splitting. 3 Daffodils commence root growth in late summer so start planting or planning next years Daffs.

Zachary, aged 10, his sisters Rosie, 8, and Scarlett, 7, started coming to Seaford Community Garden with their mum, Ashley, way back in January. Eager to help in any way they could, they spied our woefully neglected children’s play area behind the wildlife pond. Could they make it their responsibility? they asked. Yes please, we chorused, then sat back to watch as the family methodically cleared the Wendy house of broken toys, taking these to the Cradle Hill tip, then set about planning what should go where. Working with Katie, who had already started planting a shade bed, they decided on strawberries in one bed and sunflowers in another, which at the time of writing were looking very promising. Meanwhile, they cleaned off the toys that were worth keeping and began to restore the Wendy House, lighting it from the inside with fresh white paint and applying a cheerful blue to the outside. As well as preparing and planting the new beds they have also built a frog house next to the pond. A combination of winter rain, spring and summer sunshine and the application of lots of soil conditioner with our compost is working wonders for our plants and produce, so thanks again to Veolia who donated another nine bags of this excellent stuff. Our tomatoes and peppers love it! Thanks are also well deserved for the lads from MC Builders Sussex Ltd who, on a very hot day, delivered a load of slabs kindly donated by Veronica, and to B & Q, who gave us some lovely bedding plants. A team of volunteers including Diana, Veronica, James and Stan manned a plant stall at the annual garden party given by Pippa and Michael Logan at their home in Sutton Avenue, which this year raised money for Home Link, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Mary’s Meals. Last year we received a generous donation with which we bought chairs and tables for the classroom, which is now getting plenty of use. For instance, it was chosen as the venue for an Age UK taster session and for a

Seaford Inner Wheel SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB
Seaford Inner Wheel is delighted to announce its President for this year, Dr Mary Morris.
Mary Morris was born in Kent and trained as a doctor at Kings College Hospital, London. A short spell working in Swaziland convinced her to plan working abroad but romance intervened and she married a local GP Kenneth McGhee, and moved to Sussex. Mary combined life as the wife of a GP, mother of four children and her medical career. Her areas of work were mainly in Child Protection, Forensic Medicine and Sexual Health. Five years ago, Mary retired early to spend time with Kenneth during his terminal illness. Deciding not to return to medicine, Mary has busied herself in various community projects, and in supporting her children and grandchildren. Mary’s chosen local charity for her presidential year is Headway, which supports people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and their families. Headway’s mission statement is “Rebuilding Lives after Brain Injury”. ABI can be traumatic through an accident or as a consequence of a medical condition such as a brain haemorrhage. The pathway after an ABI is very variable. Some people can have a complete recovery or almost complete recovery in weeks or months. Others do not recover after ABI and they and their families have to learn to live with changed skills and often changed personalities. Our local Headway is based in Newick, with satellites in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hailsham. Services are delivered from these hubs and via outreach into homes. Respite, rehabilitation, counselling and reablement are just some of the services offered to people with ABI and their families. As usual Inner Wheel is planning a number of fund raising events in the next year. The first is a “Silent Auction” on 29th September 6.45 to 8.30 at Blatchington Golf Club Tickets £5 to include a drink and nibbles. Tickets are available from any Inner Wheel member or on the door; proceeds will go to Headway! Photo: Dr Mary Morris

12th June dawned, light to breeze, blue sky and wall to wall sunshine. A day for our Garden Party! Thanks to our friends, neighbours and fellow members we raised over £400. The President of Sussex Area of NAFAS, Pam Gibson, drew the raffle and flowers were presented to Mary in gratitude for allowing her lovely garden to be used. All the Committee worked hard and Jill sold the plants. Many thanks to them all and a special thank you to Beryl and Sheila for serving cream teas all afternoon.
What happens if I go to a Flower Club?
On entering the hall there will be tables where Committee members will note your name (fire regulations), accept the £4.50 visitor’s fee and give you a tea ticket. Another member will offer a strip of raffle tickets for £1 to win one of the flower arrangements. At one end of the hall there will be tables on which a few members will have placed their own arrangements in the monthly competition. These will be judged by the Demonstrator, who will discuss her placings during the programme. If you arrive not knowing anyone please tell the welcomer and she will introduce you to a friendly member who will explain the proceedings. A bag will be passed around in aid of our Charity, which for this year is the Newhaven Lifeboat. If you have enjoyed the afternoon you may wish to join the Club current annual membership fee is £23. On Thursday 21st August Margaret Williams will present her programme entitled “Time after Time” at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford 2pm for 2.30pm start. Doors open at 1.45pm. There is a special Event on September 18th at Meridian Centre Peacehaven. Tan Strong, a National Demonstrator and Competitor at the World Association of Flower Arrangers is coming to demonstrate her wonderful talent with a display entitled “Colour my World”. Three years ago she appeared on Channel 4 teaching Kirstie Allsopp; check her website where there is a link to the programme. This Open Meeting costs £12, to include light refreshments which will be served from 12.30pm. There is a £4 reduction for club members. For further details please telephone Tina Bacon on 01323 873162.

Seaford Times After my appeal here in Seaford Scene, on Seaford Times website and Facebook page, I would like to thank those who have sent photos of their Seaford family members, who took part in the First World War, to me at Seaford Times. If this is the first time you have read about this, let me explain that Seaford Times is trying to get photographs of Seafordians that took part in the Great War, especially the men who didn’t make it back and are on our war memorial. Seaford Museum have now joined me in this task. At the time of writing I have just reached 80 confirmed named servicemen. There are many more un-named men on the website and Facebook page for you to view. Maybe you can recognise your grandfather or great grandfather. If you have access to the internet, please take a look at www.seafordtimes.com

Lewes District Citizens Advice Bureau launches access online Lewes District Citizens Advice Bureau is part of an email Gateway Project to help people to access advice online. From 2nd June 2014 you will be able to visit their website at www.lewescab.org.uk and follow the link to “Online Advice” on the advice page using the icon. You will be able to access online information to help you resolve your problem, or you can submit an enquiry using the web forms. The bureau may respond by sending links to relevant information, by phone or by arranging an appointment. The five bureaux that make up Citizens Advice East Sussex have worked together to create this new online contact system which will be rolled out across East Sussex. The bureaux aim to increase access to advice for clients across the county. Jackie Wilkes, manager of Lewes District CAB welcomes the new service, “With the number of people online today and advances in technology, email access seems to be a natural progression for the bureau. It will help us to improve access for our clients, being particularly useful for people in full-time employment, for those with mobility and hearing issues, or for anyone else having difficulty accessing advice.” Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Sold Out Show Prompts Added Date It took just 72 hours for Britain’s Got Talent SemiFinalist, Sam Jones, to sell out his sneak-peek show at the Barn Theatre, Seaford, when the tickets went online. Due to overwhelming demand, Seaford magician and ventriloquist Sam has put on a second date – Sunday 3rd August 5.30pm – but tickets are flying out just as fast. “I’m thrilled to have a packed house for my first show on 20th July,” said Sam, “and I hope that anyone that was disappointed not to get tickets for the first show, will be able to make the new added date.” Since appearing on BGT in June this year-21-year-old Sam, who has Tourette’s Syndrome, has been inundated with messages from other sufferers thanking him for inspiring them to aim higher, and was the guest speaker and performer at a TS Conference in the Midlands, two weeks ago. Sam will be performing with a host of little fabric friends, including Baby Leo, and dazzling the audience with comedy, ventriloquism and magic. Teen Talent Show Winner Pens Song For Brand New Musical
Fifteen-year-old singer/songwriter, Tyanna Griffiths, took the crowd by storm at Seahaven Academy on 26th June with her passionate performance of her original song, Broken, which she was inspired to write following the death of her grandfather. The audience of around 400 people saw Tyanna named as the winner of Seahaven’s Got Stars, with pianist Francesco Redica coming second and vocalist Morgan Smith coming third. Well known for her lead performances with award winning youth theatre, Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors, Tyanna was chosen to compose an original track for their upcoming show “Roar of the Crowd” and will be seen performing her new song “Perfect Harmony” at the Barn Theatre, Seaford in October 2014. SWINDELLS moveS with the times but sTAY IN THE AREA We’ve finally moved office after 20-odd years at Clinton Place, and we’re delighted with our new home at Wilson House, Brooklyn Road. And just as it is with moving home, we discovered long lost items, broke a few things along the way and promised to ourselves that we’d never do it again. Anybody who knows us will know how our use of the office has changed over the years as we’ve kept track with technology and how Clinton Place became more and more unsuitable, so when completely refurbished office space tailored to our needs became available it was too difficult not to jump at the opportunity.
Possibly because of the extensive planning, we are accountants after all, the move went like clockwork, and amongst a flurry of decorators, IT technicians, and electricians we were in and up and running just 24 hours after closing the doors at Clinton Place. As always, we put our clients and staff first, and kept everybody involved every step of the way, but still had to take time to reassure everybody that whilst moving from Clinton Place might have been the end of an era for us, it certainly wasn’t the marking the end of our involvement with Seaford, and the surrounding area. Some of the long-lost items we found again when we moved reminded us of our history and just how long we’ve been in Seaford and just how much Seaford is part of our business. So let’s be clear, we’re proud to be in Seaford and we’re not going anywhere!

Seaford Bowling Club
Seaford Bowling Club was invited to bowl in a friendly match at the oldest Bowling club in the world. Southampton (Old) Bowling Green, which was first appointed in 1299, the greens were cut with a scythe and then rolled flat, the bowl was lobbed, similar to the game Boules. Seaford Bowling Club celebrated their first Centenary in 2012, thats 713 years after the formation of the Southampton (Old) Bowling Green club. The club house has so many historical artefacts to view whilst waiting for the game to start. The actual club is situated in the middle of a one way system, opposite the Southampton docks. Seaford came a very close runner up at end of a very competetive day’s bowling, which was enjoyable. After the game our guests treated Seaford to a two-course dinner and our hosts waiting on us at the tables. St James’ Trust DROP IN
The article on page 95 of the July Issue of Seaford Scene was not an officially authorised St James’ Trust information article. We can only think that someone was trying to do the Trust a good turn by publicising our drop in at the Old Town Hall. The facts were not quite correct as we open Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm and on Saturday between 10am and 12 noon. We must point out that this is the St James’ Trust Drop In. It is rented from the Town Council by us, it is run by St James’ volunteers and is funded with St James’ Trust money, much of which is donated by the people of Seaford. We do not authorise separate departmental articles as this can give a limited impression of the Trust and its works. We also have a charity shop with very reasonable prices at our 11 Blatchington Road site open from 10am to 12.30pm, Monday to Friday and we have three halls, a meeting room and a catering kitchen in the Club House at the same address from where we facilitate the aims

and objects of our Trust: i.e. to help the elderly and disabled in the area. The Blatchington Road Club House is also run by a team of dedicated volunteers and we feel that no one small part of our team should ever be mentioned in the press without the whole of the Trust’s volunteers also being given credit and thanks for their efforts. The people of Seaford are welcome to visit or “Drop In” to all St James’ Trust sites. Deborah often described, as the black sheep of the family will be sharing her amazing true story!
Charity Garden Party Thank You
It began in Brighton with an abduction at 4 years of age, later bound by the occult, broken by multiple traumas, locked up in institutions, homeless and abused, drug taking that led to a severe mental breakdown, all seemed lost and hopeless with no chance of recovery.
Michael and Pippa Logan would like to thank you for your kind donation towards our recent Garden Party in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Mary’s Meals and Homelink held on June 29th.
Come and hear how miracles still happen! Whatever your situation there is always hope! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
It was a great day with lovely weather and we achieved our best ever result, raising a total of £3,750 for these charities. This amazing sum would not have been possible without the generosity, help, support of so many people. So thank you very much.
Saturday 6th of September, 7pm at Chyngton Methodist Hall, in a friendly and informal atmosphere with refreshments, café style. Please Note: Due to the content of the story this is an adult evening only.
Yours sincerely Pippa and Michael Logan

The Better ‘Ole Meeching Amateur Dramatics, a Newhaven based theatre group, have secured funding from Newhaven Town Council and Lewes District Council to revive a West End production, The Better ’Ole, for this WW1 commemoration year.
Bruce Bairnsfather is remembered by military historians, but surprisingly also many people in Seaford and Newhaven can recall their grandparents mentioning the humorous drawings of a blob-nosed, walrus moustached “Tommy”, called “Old Bill” from the Great War. Captain Bruce Bairnsfather served in France with the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. His cartoons were incredibly popular and published from 1915 for the duration of the war and after. Due to the popularity of “Old Bill” a stage play followed. This took the West End by storm between 1916–18 and two films, one by Warner Brothers’ later followed. Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD) feel very honoured and privileged to bring to The Fort at Newhaven, during this commemorative year, Bairnsfather’s brilliant and humorous West End stage success, The Better ’Ole. The play, with its original songs, will be performed for three nights over the bank holiday weekend, 21 to 23 August at 7.45pm. Tickets £10 (concessions available) from Newhaven Fort, Tel 01273 517622.

SEAFORD & DISTRICT FOLK DANCE GROUP
Seaford & District Folk Dance Group starts its new season on 1st September, after a break in August. We meet every Monday (except bank holidays) at the Downs Leisure Centre, 7.45-9.45pm. We are a friendly club, with over 30 members, and new people are always welcome, with a free evening the first time. Our age group and dance experience is wide-ranging. Some members have been folk-dancing for many years and we have others who have taken it up more recently or have not danced since their school days. We have a different caller each week and it is usually an evening of mixed styles of dance, some slow gentle dances from the 17th Century, traditional English dances and some American contras, which can be quite lively. It is not necessary to come with a partner, as we make sure noone sits out for long, unless they wish to have a rest. The dance movements are fun and easy to learn, with tuition given when it is wanted. During the year we hold three afternoon dances on Saturdays in January, April and September, and two evening dances in March and November. 2015 will be our 30th anniversary year, which will be celebrated at our March dance. Further details of this event will be published nearer the time. Just turn up on a Monday evening, or ring Judy on 01273 516668 or Pam on 01273 585551 for more information.
