Welcome Welcome to the December and Christmas issue of Seaford Scene! I can’t believe it’s that time of year again; having said that, I’ve enjoyed a few glasses of mulled wine and some mince pies already! This month’s issue has lots of ideas for Christmas presents or gift tokens from local businesses as well as where to go and what to do to celebrate this festive time - browse through the magazine and see ‘what’s on’, pages 102 - 107. Look out for Santa and the Rotary Club of Seaford, who could be visiting a street near you - see page 8. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported Seaford Scene over this last year and to wish contributors, advertisers and residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Supporting local independent shoPS ‘People’s Favourite Independent Retailer of the Year 2012’ and ‘Do your Christmas Shopping in Seaford Month’. As a Seaford District Councillor, whose ward includes the town’s main shopping streets, I have been thinking of ways to help promote local shops in Seaford and to encourage people to use our Independent local shops which are not part of a chain. In Seaford we are lucky to be blessed with some wonderful independent retailers and with Christmas being one of the busiest periods of the year, I want to help promote our local independent shops. This is why I am championing the idea of people voting for their “Favourite Independent Retailer of the year” and “Do your Christmas Shopping in Seaford”. People’s Favourite Retailer of the Year From Monday 19th November to December 19th 2012, shoppers will be encouraged to use our local independent retailers and to vote in store, on line or by post for their favourite Independent Retailer of the Year. By entering people will be supporting our local independent shops and also stand a chance of winning £100 to spend in the shop they voted for. The shop that wins the most votes will proudly become “People’s Favourite Retailer of the Year 2012”. This initiative will be supported by the “Do your Christmas Shopping in Seaford Month” which will encourage people to shop locally during the Christmas period in the expectation that they stand a chance of winning £100.00 to spend at a local shop. For Retailers: there is no cost whatsoever to participate in this initiative. You will be furnished with two FREE A4 posters and a bunch of counter leaflets/voting slips
CHERISH
Cherished items and something for everyone... Crystal silver jewellery and sweet trees, readings, massage and reflexology. Santas Grotto will be here from Dec 7th at 5pm and on Sats and the last week of Dec, £3.50 (Santa’s sign will be outside when he is in residence).

which you can hand out to your customers visiting your shop. In addition you will be able to download more posters/counters leaflets on line. In addition stickers (see sample) will be made freely available for you. There is no cost to local shops for participating in this event. From Monday 19th November to December 19th 2012, press releases, twitter feeds and Facebook posts will promote the “Do your Christmas Shopping in Seaford month” as well as the list of shops that customers can vote for their “people’s favourite shop of the year”. As a District Councillor, my aim is to do something proactive to help local independent businesses. I hope this idea will help drum up more local trade and to encourage the people of Seaford to support and use their local shops in the run up to the Christmas period and beyond. I would welcome your opinion on this proposal. Your support For this initiative to succeed it needs the support of YOU, the local independent shops. From Monday 19th November to December 23rd 2012, we will be promoting as much as possible the ethos of together with a list of shops that are part of the “people’s favourite shop of the year”. Whilst customers can nominate any local shop of their choice, no shop will be put forward without prior approval/registration from shop owners. You can register by sending an email to sam.adeniji@ lewes.gov.uk stating the name of the shop, address and type of shop/products sold. Or complete and return the attached slip to me I very much look forward to hearing from you in anticipation of your support. Cllr Sam Adeniji District Councillor Seaford South What is an Independent Retailer? An Independent retailer is a shop or franchisee with no more than three branches of the same type of store; this includes restaurants, newsagent etc.

BUY HEATING OIL NOW TO SAVE ON WINTER as they switch the heating back on; their spending goes up. FUEL COSTS Lewes & Seaford Citizens Advice Bureau is urging households in Lewes District who rely on heating oil to stock up now to avoid higher costs in the winter months.
But by being prepared and buying heating oil now, being warm this winter doesn’t have to break the bank.” Buying oil early is not the only way to save money on your heating oil - you could save up to 10% more through being part of an oil club.
Fuel is more expensive during December to February so customers who leave it to the last minute to get their winter fuel can end up paying over the odds. By buying early they can cut the costs and have the supplies ready to combat the chilly times ahead.
On oil club is a buying group that bulk buys oil on behalf of its members. As the group buys oil in larger quantities than individual customers, it can get a better price per unit of oil, it has more bargaining power and it can cut delivery costs as the supplier can make fewer journeys.
The drive is part of a national campaign called ‘Buy Oil Early’ with Consumer Focus, ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), Citizens Advice Bureau and FPS (the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers.
Citizens Advice has a dedicated web portal to help people find their nearest oil club– www.citizensadvice. org.uk/oilclubs. And if there isn’t an oil club nearby, the website has advice and guidance on how to start your own oil-buying group.
CAB District Manager Jackie Wilkes said: “Households are tightening their belts and looking at ways to save money. Winter is well on its way and the onset of colder temperatures will fill many people with a sense of dread –

Top tips for heating oil consumers l Fill up your tank well before winter arrives. Suppliers are less busy and can offer better value (fuel is more expensive in December, January and February). l Ask two oil suppliers for quotes and get the best price. You may find you can get a better deal if you develop a relationship with one supplier. l If you have difficulty paying for your fuel on delivery, ask your supplier about flexible payment options. l If switching supplier, give your new supplier accurate delivery instructions so they can then send an appropriate delivery vehicle and the driver can safely fill the correct tank. l Get the best deal by ordering in a way that makes delivery efficient for both you and the oil supplier, for example by joining a local oil club. For details of how to do this/set one up, go to www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ oilclubs l Fuel is a necessity for most people. If you are in financial difficulty, seek early advice by visiting your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) for free, independent advice, or visit CAB’s website: www.adviceguide.org.uk/ l Call free on 0800 512 012 (or 0300 456 2655 from mobiles) to find out if you are eligible for an energy efficiency grant. These can help reduce the costs of heating your home. Visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk/oilclubs for guidance on how to set up and run an oil club.

Church Lane Flowers
This year we’ve had a little face lift at Church Lane Flowers, Seaford. We’ve painted a new shop front and found a fantastic local business to wrap the company car with our new logo, which seems to have worked well and we’ve had lots of positive comments.
We started off the year with our fair share of wedding and funeral work which has continued throughout the summer and now it seems we’re busier than ever. We have lots of brides booked in for next year but nothing quite tops the bride who contacted us the day BEFORE her wedding! We came up with some great ideas and she was really happy with her flowers. Phew! With Christmas on its way, we are busy planning all our handmade wreaths and table decorations which were so popular last year. We’re taking orders now for bespoke decorative arrangements too, and we’re giving all our lovely customers 10% off all purchases until December 22nd with the voucher on this page. We’ve introduced a couple of new unique services in the shop this year which have proved popular we noticed quite a few customers rushing in with panicked faces having forgotten a birthday or anniversary so we’ve started a ‘text reminder’ service. We just take the mobile number and the date/s that the customer want to be reminded of and a couple of days before the event, we send a text reminder. That’s it, no catch and it’s free! The other service we now provide is grave tending for people who for whatever reason are unable to visit their loved one’s resting place. I thought about the fact that I have several deceased relatives in different areas of the country which I don’t get to visit often. On their birthdays or important anniversaries I would like to know that someone nearby would tend their grave, give it a clean and tidy any weeds, and then maybe plant something or
place some flowers there. So this is what I do, and if the customer wishes, I take a picture and text or email it to them. We are also running wreath-making classes in December. Please call Helen for more information. Church Lane Flowers shop is open on Fridays from about 8am till 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am until we sell out! However, we are able to do wedding and funeral work and local flower delivery on any day of the week, just phone or email Helen.
Please don’t hesitate to contact Helen if you would like any more information on 07792 592714 or email: helen@churchlaneflower.co.uk or visit our website: www.churchlaneflowers.com

In 2013 the Collective will be back at the HOP for yet another Christmas show and at the newly refurbished Art@theCrypt gallery in Seaford in August. The Star Pottery Group has flourished under the attentive guidance of Mohamed Hamid, who has been a long-standing member of the artistic community in Lewes. The Star Pottery, located in the Star Brewery workshop building, is set in the heart of historic Lewes, the county town of Sussex and is overlooked by the impressive ruins of a Norman castle. It was established in its current form in 1989. “Waes-Hael!” will feature many of Sussex’s best local artists and craftspeople as well as a number of immerging talents. Typical of a Collective show “WaesHael!” sets out to represent the full range of art and craft disciplines from beautifully turned wood, jewellery, glass, textiles and ceramics, to fine art painting, printing and photography. The work is always of the highest standard, yet instantly appealing and very affordable. Many of the artists taking part in “Waes-Hael!” will be familiar to many as a number of them take part in various Open House exhibitions during the Brighton Art Festival, the Uckfield Art Trail, Worthing Open Houses and Lewes District Artwave Festival.

Seahaven Lioness Club Seahaven Lioness Club’s Charity Trust Fund received a boost after another successful Fashion Show was held at Seaford Golf Club. The event was organised in conjunction with M & Co and Exquisite You Bridal Boutique, both of Broad Street, Seaford. The shops showcased some of their latest stock, from winter woollies to ball gowns and prom dresses, taking in also outfits suitable for the Christmas party season. Some of the Lionesses and their friends and families were among the models and the shops also provided models from staff and their friends and families. Ages ranged from children to ladies in their 70s and came in all shapes and sizes! A raffle was held and an auction, which, together with ticket sales, raised over £500 net. The Lionesses would like to say thank you to the managers and staff of the two shops and to Seaford Golf Club for making the event possible, to all those who donated raffle prizes, especially Zara at Z Jewellers in Seaford for the donation of the jewellery set which was auctioned and to everyone else who supported the Fashion Show in any way. Our next Seaford activity is our traditional carol singing gathering outside the Old Plough in Church Street on Saturday morning 8th December from 10.30am. Music will be provided by the Archway Choir and the pub is kindly offering mulled wine and mince pies to all those attending. Father Christmas will be there with small gifts for the children so get your Christmas season off to a festive start with a singalong. And please keep fingers crossed for a fine (and not too cold!) day.

The Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters Pub off the Alfriston Road is an excellent example of Art Deco architecture with a beautiful 1930s interior. The new team at ‘The Sevens’ is inviting you to try their new, extensive menu which includes traditional home-made dishes, Sunday roasts and a special festive menu. I went along to sample their food on a cold November day where the warm cosy interior of the pub was very welcoming. Sitting in the bar area I marvelled at the beautiful Art-Deco fixtures and fittings - carved wooden chairs and doors, oak panelling on the walls and ceiling, the colourful Tiffany lamps and illuminated glass panelling above the bar. I could easily have been back in the 1930s. ‘The Sevens’, named after the nearby Seven Sisters Cliffs was originally designed and built by Brighton, Hove and Portsmouth breweries. It was built on a site that used to be a traction engine repair yard and following the demise of the engine, the site was used for travelling funfairs. After the First World War, a trunk road from Dover to Honiton in Devon, running directly past this site, was planned and so with forethought, the United Breweries engaged Ringer Building Works to erect the Art-Deco Building in order to catch passing trade. The building was completed and opened in January 1931. Frank Blackmore, one of the original carpenters that worked on the building had been a regular of the Sisters up until recently, before he died. Unfortunately the outbreak of the Second World War brought plans for the new road to a halt which left ‘The Sevens’ high and dry on the outskirts of sleepy Seaford. Time then forgot ‘The Sevens’, though it was used as a ‘home from home’ for a period during the war and a local black market centre for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces who were lodging in St Peter’s School across the road. During the 50s with the profusion of ‘Prep’ schools in Seaford, ‘The Sevens’ enjoyed a period of prosperity as a small hotel accommodating parents and reps who were visiting the school. United Breweries was then taken over by Brickwoods Brewery.
Gradually, unable to expand south due to the English channel, Seaford began to spread inland and ‘The Sevens’
became surrounded by houses. In the mid 1960s, Brickwoods Brewery was taken over by Whitbreads and more recently in 2002 the ownership went to Enterprise Inns. In 1987, the bars in the pub were refurbished and a dining area was set aside. The first floor function room was enlarged and had its own bar built. Now, over 80 years later, the pub still holds its charm and with plans to have an real fire, log fire refurbished upholstery and the garden maintained, the beauty and authenticity of the place will be enhanced even more. The extensive menu includes traditional home-made meals, such as steak and ale pie, lamb shanks, steak and kidney pudding, winter stews with dumplings and a selection of fresh fish. There are also lighter snacks of ploughman’s, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, a children’s menu and a variety of desserts. Vegetarian options are also available and any special dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice. I opted for a curry from the specials board, which was a good size and served with rice, popadums and mango chutney - crispy popadums, a rich tasty curry that was spicy but not too hot and light, fluffy rice, all very reasonably priced. ‘The Sevens’ Festive Lunch and Dinner Menu is also currently available - 3 courses for £16.95 and 2 courses for £12.95 with a choice of five or six dishes per course and including filter coffee and crackers! Pre-booking for this menu is required. ‘The Sevens’ has a dining area that seats 24 with additional seating in the bar area. There is also a separate function room and bar on the first floor available for hire whilst the downstairs dining area can be reserved for private parties - sometimes used for ‘wakes’ as Seaford cemetery is close by. The pub offers free Wi-Fi, a large car park and children are very welcome. If you haven’t been inside ‘The Sevens’ by now, then I’d definitely suggest you make a visit there. ‘Straight and Narrow’ by Jimmie Chin, directed by Dennis Picott Seaford Little Theatre, 9–17 November The action of this contemporary play takes place in the lounge of Bob and Jeff ’s home on the south coast of England. Bob (Garry Fowler) and Jeff (Peter Barnes) are a seemingly contented gay couple. Bob narrates the story to the audience, introducing us to his sisters: laid-back straight-talking pregnant mother of three Lois (Becky Robinson) and her relaxed husband Bill (James Collins), neurotic Nona (Andrea Lowe), whose husband Arthur (Martin Adams) has just run off with another woman, and mother Vera (Trish Richings), who sees the worst in everyone and continually harangues the family with her negative comments. Bob explains to the audience that we all tell lies every day just to keep the peace. For example, he has never told his mother he is gay.
fathom what is going on, Lois, the real lynchpin of the family, uses her diplomatic skills to prise open some
We see just how damaging such lies can be when Bob and Jeff return from a holiday in Malta to a family gathering in thundery moods, swearing and shouting at each other. While Vera cannot
Seaford Little Theatre took on this challenging play with gusto. Vera uttered her fabulous lines with great spirit; ‘I’ve seen more attractive lumps in gravy’ and ‘If your father were alive, he’d turn over in his grave.’ I loved her description: ‘a mother is like a bird; when her chicks flee the nest she is ‘eartbroken, ‘eartbroken.’ Lighting was cleverly used to differentiate between the scenes where Bob spoke intimately with the audience and the action of the play. The actors successfully created the scenes of pandemonium but also the more poignant moments of reflection that indicate that the lies that we maintain can destroy our relationships. An excellent directorial debut from Dennis Picott and great performances by both the experienced and the fresh faces at Seaford Little Theatre. Cath Senker.
WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK 7 Clinton Place, Seaford
of the family secrets. We discover that Jeff harbours a desire to live on the ‘straight and narrow’ and have children, and that Bob’s father was probably gay. But will Bob ever come out to his mother?

Natural Face Lift Massage An Anti-Aging Therapy
in the mirror I had a lovely healthy glow on my face particularly on the cheek bones whilst the skin around my eyes appeared much brighter and smoother!
Following on from my amazing experience of cold laser, anti-aging therapy, Marianna Dragojevic based in Peacehaven and working at Haven Therapies, Saxon Lane invited me to try an anti-aging natural face-lift massage. It’s a treatment that Marianna recommends to have along with the Cold Laser Treatment and/or the Organic Facial Treatment, but actually many of her customers enjoy the experience so much, they have this face-lift massage whenever!
After So, I say yes to Before the treatment it worked for me. I can also understand why Marianna’s clients enjoy this massage on a regular basis too - it was incredible how relaxed yet rejuvinated I felt and so with a healthy glow, brighter skin and looking a little younger (hopefully), I happily skipped away! Fran Tegg
Marianna’s natural face-lift massage combines a variety of non-invasive techniques including Japanese Anma therapy - one of the oldest forms of massage, Ayurvedic massage based on the oldest medical system originating in India, acupressure and facial reflexology. Marianna explained that the natural face-lift massage works as an anti-aging treatment by reducing expression lines and wrinkles as well as releasing muscle tension in the face and jaw. It stimulates cellular activity and tightens and tones the skin and underlying muscles. It also increases the elimination of toxins, improves blood circulation and can relieve symptoms of stress such as insomnia and headache. She uses different organic oils, bio oil and beauty balm for the massage depending on your skin type.
Natural Face Lift Massage Price List: 1 treatment: 30 mins - £20 or 45 mins - £30 Course of 4 treatments: 30 mins - £75 Course of 4 treatments: 45 mins £110 To book a free consultation or a treatment contact Marianna on 07960 561874 or Haven Therapies on 01323 492488 or visit www.antiaging-therapy.co.uk
The treatment began with me lying on the couch, outer clothes removed to the waist and I was covered with a towel. With eyes closed, Marianna asked me to take a few deep breaths which she followed with pressure placed on my shoulders. She then moved to my feet and gently pulled my legs, one at a time. A moment of stillness followed where I presumed Marianna was practising reike. Marianna moved back to my face and began gentle massage using bio-oil around my neck and shoulders and over my face, around my cheeks, eye sockets and ear lobes - a combination of pressure, tapping and gentle flowing massage. It was very rhythmical and with soft music playing in the background I could feel myself slowly sinking down into the couch and drifting off to sleep... and I think I did because I don’t remember very much else except my legs being gently pulled again and waking up feeling incredibly relaxed. How amazing! After drinking a cup of water, I dressed mindful of the way I felt - refreshed and calm and my face felt lighter, free of tension and smooth to touch. Liam has lived in Seaford for 23 years and is a Medical Officer and Senior Lifeguard with Seaford Lifeguards. He has been a member for nine years and is involved with First Aid training. Liam also works for the South East Coast Ambulance Service as an Emergency Care Support Worker. He attended Seaford Head Community College and has a pet cat called Maisie. What do you most enjoy about your job? The chance to pass on my knowledge and experience to both new and old members. What do you like best about Seaford? Only being 10 minutes’ walk from either the beach or the countryside. What book are you reading? Blood Sweat and Tea. What is your favourite film? Snatch. Which living person do you most admire? Professor D. Chamberlain CBE. What words or phrases do you most overuse? “Not so bad” How do you relax? Going to the gym or for a run. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Splitting my trousers wide open whilst rock climbing. What is your most memorable learning experience? Learning to drive the ambulances. What is your greatest fear? My Auntie! What is the most important lesson life has taught you? If your patient feels sick, do not stand directly in front of them! What makes you sad? Funerals: I have the complete inability to control the water works at these occasions… How would you spend a million pounds? Wisely… I would invest in my own house, donate a large amount to Seaford Lifeguards and save the rest. What keeps you awake at night? The neighbours’ dogs! What is your greatest extravagance? Social life and just over a year ago, a new car. What is your favourite smell? Clean sheets. What is your idea of perfect happiness? A Chinese takeaway and a bottle of tiger. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Don’t judge people till you actually know them. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My bed. What would your motto be? Don’t live life by one motto. Anything else? The Seaford Lifeguards organisation is solely run by volunteers and relies very much on the kind and generous donations from the members of public in Seaford and the surrounding areas and organisations.

Running Commentary... Three months have passed since the Olympics and Paralympics inspired the world, but was it sufficiently motivational to encourage more Seaford Scene readers to take up running or to run more often? Although it may not suit everyone, running with other people can be very beneficial, so trying out the Seaford Striders could be your next step towards improving your running, or your first step in exploring a new sport. But don’t be put off by assuming that all club runners must be fit and fast. Actually, they comprise the widest mixture of speeds, run a variety of distances, are aged from 8 to 80 and are a blend of beginners, occasional and regular runners, all united by the love of running. The seniors meet at the Downs Leisure Centre on Wednesdays at 7pm (and Mondays too) while the juniors gather at 6pm in the ‘Salts’ car park opposite Morrison’s on Wednesdays during the dark evening months and various other venues during the summer. A warm welcome is guaranteed, as is the support and encouragement to develop and enjoy running at whatever level you aspire to.
IF IT’S A YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, THEN WHY NOT TRY TONE AND TRIM!
For beginners, the transition from ‘non-runner’ to ‘runner’ can be surprisingly sudden, so whether you believe that you are awakening an innate skill (ie – we are born to run) or you are driven by a strong determination to get fit, lose weight, avoid the deterioration into couchpotato existence or just feeling the need to get out more, running can have a really positive effect on your way of life. If you do give running a try this month I suggest you dress to suit the weather conditions, and if you’re going to start by running in the evening, also wear a reflective top and keep to well-lit pavements. The distance you run should be short and done slowly, and preferably with someone else. I have found it encouraging to receive letters from Seaford Scene reader Keith Fraser as they remind me that those who walk the Downs, or perhaps belong to the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) and take part in events are not too dissimilar to runners. In the Beachy Head Marathon, for instance, there are approximately 500 runners, 500 joggers and 500 walkers, and they will have all covered the same distance, the same hills and mud, and then received the same medal memento at the finishing line. The winner who probably cruised around in roughly three hours may have expended more energy to complete the course so quickly yet the stamina of those who were out on the Downs for up to nine hours and had to face more of our unpredictable weather hazards as well as covering the last part in the dark could be seen as greater. This month’s festive treats begin with the challenging Crowborough 10km, a two-lap race with an unforgettable knee-trembling hill climb in each lap. The following Sunday sees the multi-terrain Mince Pie 10-mile event in Peacehaven, and to round off the year, especially for steep hill junkies there is a 5-mile crosscountry race at Firle on the 30th. By the time that you read this we will be well into winter. Please let it be a pleasant one. Whatever the weather throws at us Seaford Kurlers will hopefully shrug it off and keep playing. We will stay fit and enjoy each other’s good company. We will have been to the Ice Show, hopefully that will have fulfilled expectations. We will also be well fed and watered from our annual Christmas lunch at The Drove, Newhaven. Meanwhile we have had our AGM and awarded the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup for 2012, to Jordan Meeks. Jordan has really blossomed as a person during the last year and has done very well in the club. The GBKA (Great Britain Kurling Association) ran a coaching course for us at the Wave Leisure Centre during this year. Jordan attended and passed the course and now has a coaching qualification. The photo below shows the present holder, Tim Wood, handing the cup to Jordan.

Double Celebrations mark a new era at Seaford Baptist Church On Sunday 28th October, Seaford Baptist Church set a new record with two inductions and two dedications in the same service. In front of a packed congregation Sean Older (28) was inducted as the new Youth and Community Worker. Sean, from Brighton, who is also studying for a Youth Work qualification, has been working with the youth of Seaford on a part-time basis for the last year and is already a familiar face at some Seaford schools, and at the church’s popular youth clubs Neal Stanton (38), who has recently spent three years doing mission work in Tanzania, was also inducted as Minister-in-Training and will be studying for Ministry whilst supporting the work at the church. Neal’s son James was one of the two young children to be dedicated during the service. The other child was Alanis Lowe, daughter of Andy and Christy, whose grandmother had travelled 10,000 miles to be there. Both youngsters were introduced to their church family by being taken around the church to be greeted by the 200 + worshippers. Seaford Baptist Church, the distinctive circular building which can be seen from the Dieppe Ferry, is currently undergoing a building project. Members approved and are funding the re-roofing of their hall, which is used for community activities and blood-donor sessions. There is also a passenger lift being installed to link the hall and the church.

Senior Minister Rev Vicky Martin says: “This is an exciting time in the life of the church. Every town should be better off because they have a church and in Seaford we have quite a few! How blessed are we? At SBC we are looking forward to being able to make our work and outreach even more effective, helping us to be a blessing to the town just as we should be. Neal will be launching a new Dads-and-Tots venture in December and Sean is working hard with the 70+ youth we have at our clubs and soon we will have improved facilities to offer our services to the wider Seaford community. What with that and an exciting Christmas programme planned, it’s all go for us at the moment!”

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

NEWS FROM THE Rotary Club of Seaford Grand Raffle On Monday 29 October at noon, two ladies arrived at Morrisons in Seaford. Nothing unusual about that. But this was different because they had come to meet the Rotary Club of Seaford President Paul Vaesen who was to give them their Grand Raffle prizes for the first two places in the draw. Hilary Walker was the runner up with a cheque for £100 which she said would go towards taxing her Mini; winner Jenny Le Brun explained she would spend much of her £500 on a high-quality puffer jacket. The occasion was hosted by Morrisons Manager Tim Jeffrey who presented each winner with flowers. President Paul was ably assisted by Rotarian Tony Henley while Mike Hemmings took the photo (below). This year’s Grand Raffle raised just under £2000 for charities and good causes.
Seaford Head School Annual Awards Evening The Rotary Club of Seaford has continued its support of the Seaford Head School Annual Awards by sponsoring the awards for English Key Stage 3, Maths Key Stage 4, and French Key Stage 4. Club President Paul Vaesen and Chair of Vocational and Youth Opportunities Jim Anderson represented the Club at the Annual Awards Evening, which was introduced by the Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. In fact the title is a bit of a misnomer as the evening is very much a celebration of the school life and achievements over the last 12 months. Proud parents and other guests packed the Upper School, to be entertained by students performing dance, playing musical instruments, and singing, all to a
58
standard which made one envious of the talent they showed. There was also a slide show covering many of the activities involving the students with the high spot possibly being the Geography visit to Greenland. Keynote speeches congratulating the students and staff on another successful year were made by head teacher Lynton Golds and our MP Norman Baker. As well as the academic awards there were also Special Prizes for Service to the School and Service to the Community, along with the Mayor’s Cup for Endeavour, presented by the Mayor Cllr. Linda Wallraven, and the Tom Carter Award for the Performing Arts in memory of a former student at the school. Overall it was a very well-run evening which showed how the school is continuing to develop and expand. Clearly state secondary education in our town is in good hands.
Colin Describes Hospice At a recent Wednesday Club meeting Colin Twomey (photo opposite top), Head of Nursing, came along to give the Rotary Club of Seaford a talk about the history, workings and future of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. The UK led the way in developing the hospice movement in the 60s and 70s; hospices were and still are essentially local organisations with individual characteristics. Starting with 8 beds when it opened 29 years ago, St Wilfrid’s now has 10 beds, but this is not the largest part of their service. The hospice covers an area as far as Heathfield to the north, Pevensey to the east, and Newhaven to the west, with day care in Uckfield and Eastbourne. On top of all of that there is hospice care at home which accounts for two-thirds of care provided. Care teams are made up of nurses, specialist care assistants and doctors in the hospice as well as at home and within the Eastbourne District General Hospital. As well as direct patient care St Wilfrid’s works hard at sharing expertise and supporting external colleagues in roles including doctors, carers, nurses within the hospital sector and elsewhere. All medical students in the local universities have placements within the Hospice. The lifespan of our population is getting longer as treatments are improving. However, this means that there is an increasing need for care for those who cannot be cured. St Wilfrid’s has a slogan “Focus on Living” which concentrates on patients living life of the highest quality, using many techniques including palliative, social and psychiatric care. There is only one chance to

get it right for the patient and loved ones. Support for the loved ones is also a vital part of the hospice’s work. St Wifrid’s has a local vision. This is because there is a need to support more people in local areas as presently 70% of people die in hospitals, yet it is known that most wish to die at home. At present the hospice can only serve a minority of the population. So a new building is under construction in Eastbourne, and is expected to be operational at the end of next year. It will have twice as many beds as the original hospice, a Well Being centre, and intends to grow the home hospice scheme. Only 15% of the funding for St Wilfrid’s comes from government. The rest comes from charitable activities, and Colin stressed the importance of those activities as well as praising the great number of people and organisations that give, in so many different ways. Past President John Lockyer thanked Colin on behalf of the Rotary Club for an excellent, interesting, enjoyable and informative talk.
Visit by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex At one of our Club meetings Peter Field, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, came to our weekly lunch meeting at Seaford Golf Club. By chance on the previous day, representing her Majesty the Queen, he presented one our members, Tony Lees, with his well-deserved British Empire Medal (BEM) (photo right). A double treat for Tony, and no doubt for the Lord Lieutenant! Lord Lieutenant Peter started his address by describing some of the history of the Lord Lieutenant. The position was introduced by King Henry VIII, and there was (and still is) one Lord
Lieutenant in each county. His primary task in those days was to help raise the army for the King in his adventures abroad as well as defence of the realm. Presently the role of the Lord Lieutenant is much more community based. Lord Lieutenants are unpaid and non-political, and have the (slightly modified) uniform of Major General. They are appointed directly by Her Majesty on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, and have three areas of activity but at all times he is required to uphold the dignity of the Queen. Royal roles include: a. Performing any duties Her Majesty the Queen may require b. Organising Royal visits and escorting the Royal visitors c. Royal Garden parties d. Queen’s Awards County roles include: a. As Master of the Rolls he is responsible for Magistrates and the lower courts b. County Archives and Records c. Reserve Forces and all the County cadets d. Welcoming new citizens into the community on behalf of her Majesty and the Government Community roles include: a. Fostering goodwill throughout the local community by, for example, helping charities and local voluntary organisations. b. He is patron or president of over 40 local charities and voluntary organisations Peter was a very informative, entertaining and interesting speaker, and we were very pleased, indeed honoured, to be able to share his company and wisdom.

ANCIENT OFFICE REVIVED IN SEAFORD The Town Crier of Seaford has been appointed to a second traditional office: that of Sergeant at Mace. At a recent ceremony to award The Freedom of the Town of Seaford to Laurie Holland and Don Mabey, the Town Crier, Peter White, accompanied the Mayor of Seaford carrying the traditional Mace. Linda Wallraven, the current mayor of the town, was the first to be accompanied by the historic Elizabethan Mace since the Borough of Seaford lost its status in 1883. Then the Mayor was known as the Bailiff, and councillors were called Jurats. That is because Seaford had, for centuries, been a Limb of the Cinque Port of Hastings. The Mace has been on display at council meetings since Seaford had its town status restored in 1999, but hadn’t been processed to accompany the mayor for 130 years. At its meeting on Wednesday 24th October the Seaford Town Council resolved to restore the ancient office, and back-dated this appointment to the Awarding of the
01323 891011 creganprop@aol.com 07730 202198
Freedom ceremony on 30th September. The current Town Crier, Peter White, was appointed 35 years ago. The uniform he wears is a faithful re-creation of that of the Sergeant at Mace, since the exact pattern of the Town Criers’ uniform is unknown. The Sergeant at Mace from 1865 to 1901, William Woolgar, actually took over the post of Town Crier as well, from his brother. It is his uniform, re-created by Golding’s, one of the Queen’s warranted tailors, that Peter wears. So the dual-appointment as Crier and Sergeant doesn’t create any need for a change of uniform. The Mace will still be in pride of place at council meetings, but can now also be carried at prestigious council and mayoral functions, such as royal visits and civic church services. As the town’s lock-up, formerly beneath the Old Town Hall, now forms part of that building and the public conveniences next-door, it is unlikely that the Town Sergeant will be called upon to lock anyone up! But, as Peter pointed out:” The appointment gives added dignity and gravitas to the town, the council, and its mayor. It is a link with its civic history. The Town Council doesn’t indulge in ermine robes and cocked hats like some councils, so it provides a little ceremonial, at minimal cost, for a very historic town.” Pictutes l-r: Peter White carrying the Mace, William Woolgar, Town Sergeant from 1865 to 1901 with the Mace.

Seaford Young Mayor’s Art exhibition Children from Seaford primary schools enjoyed seeing their artwork on display at the Crypt Gallery in Church Street on Wednesday 19th October. An exhibition was organised by the Seaford Young Mayor, Amy Gough and her Deputy Georgia Colyer. The theme was ‘View Points of Seaford’ which attracted some vibrant and interesting work by children aged 5 to 11. The Mayor Linda Wallraven attended the exhibition.

Announcement from Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group In early November, our Chairperson Sen Smallwood decided to step down. Over the past few years, Sen has worked tirelessly to develop the charity and its various programmes, bringing enormous benefits to children with special needs in the local area. We are extremely grateful for all her hard work, and wish her well in her future endeavours. We would like to reassure members and the local community that the charity will be continuing all current programmes and seeking opportunities to improve and expand in the future. We have appointed a new trustee, Ali Woodman, to join the remaining founder members, Dave and Mandi Brown, on the Executive Committee. Ali, a lawyer and Seaford resident, has been an active member of the charity from its earliest beginnings, and has helped organise several successful fundraising events. About Us Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group aims to provide social and developmental opportunities to children with special needs, and to cultivate an informal support network among their parents. Our current programmes include Swimming, Sensory Music, Drum Circle and a monthly Family Drop-In. Angie’s News celebrates it’s very own Silver Jubilee On November 17th Angie’s News in the Claremont Road parade celebrated its 25th birthday. Angie Hindocha has been running the local newsagents since she took over ownership in 1987. Claremont Parade shops, including Angie’s News, has seen its share of change over the past 25 years, most notably the loss of the post office to the newsagent. Loyal customers thought this would mean the end of the small shop but Angie’s News has shown resilience and has continued to thrive through difficult times. “Without the support we have received over the years we would have disappeared a long time ago. We continue to fight the downturn and continue to grow and support our local community. My customers have been loyal and without their help over the last 25 years, we would not be where we are today” said Angie. To celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Angie’s News on November 17th the newsagent displayed a show of gratitude to customers; every 25th customer who made a purchase was presented with a gift of either wine or chocolate as a show of thanks. Once again, Angie would like to thanks her customers for their continued support. Photo: Angie in ‘Angie’s News’.

U3A stands for University of the Third Age, which is a learning co-operative of older people, enabling members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. The third age is the time of life after childhood (the first age) and full-time employment (the second age) when people have more time to devote to learning for pleasure and sharing their experience with others. No qualifications are required to join and there are no examinations, just the aim to promote life-long learning. Seaford U3A is now in its 24th year and has nearly 400 members. This year there have been over 40 courses available as well as a range of open meetings and activities. Courses are held in members’ homes or in local halls. Home courses this year include a study of psychology, a reading group, play reading, enjoying poetry, Egyptian hieroglyphs, a garden forum, 20th-

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. HMV Entertainment System If you haven’t visited Seaford Museum for a while you will not have seen the new TV & Radio section which has been upgraded to show the development of entertainment systems from old radio through to digital technology. The displays are far clearer and the exhibits easier to see including this HMV Entertainment System from 1961. This late wooden cabinet contains an 18-inch television, radio and record-player and retailed at nearly £400, the equivalent of about £6,000 today. All the equipment in the bulky piece of furniture can now be fitted into an i-phone and be popped into your handbag or pocket! SEASON OF GOODWILL? Christmas can be stressful at the best of times but more so for many separated parents and their children. Negotiations over where and with whom the children will spend Christmas can create great tensions between families. Agreeing arrangements often become problematic and in some cases impossible. Arrangements that have previously worked well throughout the year can suddenly become unworkable particularly when the children’s diaries fill up with carol concerts, nativity plays and the like. Time for contact with each parent becomes limited and so quickly identifying the hurdles and addressing them early is the key. Here are my top tips: 1. Plan early. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Agree your arrangements at least a month in advance if possible. You will then have time to ‘negotiate’ and reach a compromise. You will also have time to enlist outside help if need be such as a mediator, friend or a lawyer. 2. Communicate. People who have separated, naturally, often find it difficult to speak to their former partner. However, it is important to remember that you are both parents and as such there will always be a need for communication at some level. Try to put your own personal differences to one side and think about what is best for the children. 3. Listen to the children. Where possible, always take into account the wishes and feelings of the children. Ask them their opinions but remember to allow them the opportunity to be honest without fear of upsetting the other parent. Do not ask the children to decide where they would prefer to spend Christmas – this is unfair and puts them in a very difficult position.
4. Consider the long-term arrangements and not just this Christmas. Think about what is going to happen over the next few years at least. 5. Remember the details. Details are important e.g. times, dates and venues, collection and pick up etc . Ensure that a schedule is drawn up so there can be no confusion or dispute later on. The children also need to be fully aware of the arrangements. 6. Encourage, cooperate and be flexible. Resisting contact or refusing to cooperate will only serve to punish the children. Think about what is needed to ensure their time with both parents and their extended families is special. If all else fails and you are still unable to agree the arrangements then you may have no option but to consider an application to court regarding this issue. The court is very keen for separated parents to try their utmost to work together for the benefit of their children. If the court is asked to consider this matter they will look at what is in the best interests of the children and not what suits the parents. Ultimately the decision will be taken out of your hands and is very likely to result in an arrangement that neither you, nor the children are happy with. East Blatchington LectureS St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road
The season finished off with Alan Morgan’s “50 Years of cruising and sailing”. Alan spoke to a packed house who all enjoyed themselves. This was followed by Christmas mince pies, scrumptious cakes and sausage rolls. To keep the theme we had a small raffle. As usual I am grateful to our speaker and all the helpers. Next year we start off on March 5th with our celebrated art historian Kay Blackburn talking about “Michelanglo”; this will start at 2.30pm in the chapel rooms followed by a light tea. On April 2nd we have our Member of Parliament Norman Baker who will speak in the church. On the 7th May we have the transport writer Alan Walters talking on “Trains and the Channel Tunnel” . This will be in the chapel. On June 4th Canon Dr Andrew Mayes will also talk in the Chapel rooms on “Doors to the Sacred, the Wonder of Icons”. On July 2nd we have the celebrated author and film director Peter James - this will be in the church and I am very grateful to him as I am all our speakers. This year I must stress ADVANCE BOOKING. The chapel will have a limited number of seats due to the success of the lectures and I do want people to be comfortable. The church is not such a problem although it would be sensible to purchase the tickets beforehand. Tickets, which are still £5 to include tea, will be available from February 2013 from our loyal friends at Stephen Newberry or from me at 59 Sherwood Rd, Seaford, BN25 3ED. Stamped addressed envelopes are essential. Finally, I must thank two good friends Samuel Nunn and Alan G Baker for Samuel’s brilliant recital which Alan introduced. They kindly gave the collection money to the church funds.. Thank you also to this magazine and all the speakers and helpers. Shirley Linsell.

Catch a Falling Star A Short Story for Christmas by Gwenda Stanton
It was the last day of term before the Christmas holidays. The class of nine-year-old children were excitedly stacking books and tearing down their poems and stories from the walls, stuffing them unceremouniously into the bulging paper baskets. Paper chains so lovingly made and hung the week before were trodden underfoot. Miss Philips, the class teacher, wearily gazed at the chaos before her. She looked across the room to where Daniel was fully engrossed in painting his nativity picture which must be finished before the bell rang for play. He needed to get it done because it was to be his present to his overworked mother. However, his football team, the Red Rovers, desperately needed to thrash their enemy, the Blue Bombers, that afternoon. Would his masterpiece be finished in time for him to play? Sadly, disaster was about to follow. Painting was not a favourite lesson for Daniel. Indeed it had been torture for him to hear the rest of the team out in the playground when he should have been scoring the winning goal. . His hopes of leading his team to victory were dashed by Miss Philips, who said sharply just as the bell rang for playtime, “Daniel, that picture of yours must be finished by the end of play. If you hadn’t spent so much time daydreaming, it would have been done. Now you must stay in and get on with it. I want all the paints and brushes cleaned and put away this afternoon. Children, you can all take your pictures home today”. It was almost Christmas and Daniel hoped his Mam would like his present to her. She wouldn’t understand that he had sacrificed this important match in order to finish his picutre. At nine years old he was the oldest child in the family. The Rogers, who were known as “the Dodgers” were well known in the district as troublemakers. Mrs Rogers did her best to rear her brood of three boys and twin girls. Her happy-go-lucky ways and complete ignorance of hygiene and discipline helped her to cope with a husband who spent most of the family benefit at the pub and the rest of his time avoiding the police.

Daniel had never given his mother a present. Would she like his picture of the three kings riding on their camels, following a moving star? Would she even look at it? Maybe she wouldn’t notice that there hadn’t been quite enough room on the paper to squeeze in all three camels, so to make sure that there was no doubt about the third king, he’d painted a large bag of gold coins near a camel’s foot. He didn’t know how to paint myrrh or frankincense. Miss Philips had told the class about the three kings setting out on a long journey to follow a wonderful star, which would guide them to find a newborn king. I expect they would be surprised to find him in a stable, thought Daniel, and what a smelly place for a baby! Goal! came a shout from the playground. “Hooray! They’ve scored”, said Daniel to himself as he energetically loaded his brush with black paint to complete his idea of a midnight sky. His head was aching and his tongue kept pushing against a wobbly tooth at the front of his mouth. “If that tooth isn’t out by tonight, I shall pull it out for you”, his Dad had shouted. “I shall tie a piece of string to it and fix it to the door. Then I shall slam the door. That willl fix it, leave it to me”. Daniel was scared of him. Sometimes his jokes could be cruel. It would soon be Christmas and Daniel’s red football kit was getting too tight for him. Mrs Rogers had managed to buy the outfit from the school jumble sale last year. “The sleeves were too short but rolled up no-one will notice!” she thought, giving his shirt a tug. “Do you for another year at least”. Daniel envied his friends in their smart kit, lovely new shirts, shorts socks and boots. “These boots are too small Mam”, he complained, “I can hardly walk in them, they cripple me. How do you expect me to score in these?” Would there be the remotest chance that his Dad would win on the dogs and buy Daniel some new boots for Christmas? He dismissed the thought as a useless dream. He often imagined himself playing for England, taking the cheers of the fans as he scored the winning goal for his country. “Finished at last!”, he sighed. Laying down his brush he gazed contentedly at his masterpiece. Then suddenly he started. He realised to his horror that he had not painted the most important part of his picture. Where

The bell rang or the end of play and the children came bursting and pushing noisily into the classroom. “Daniel Rogers, is your picture finished?” called Miss Philips over the din in the room. “Bring it here to me please”, she continued. Gingerly, Daniel lifted the painting from the newspaper covered desk, and started to edge his way towards his teacher, making his slow way between the chattering children. Then... his foot skidded on the damp floor and his precious masterpiece slipped from his fingers, landing face downwards on the murky floorboards, with poor Daniel on top of it. Scrambling to his feet among the laughter of his classmates, he prised his painting from the floor. A large tear trickled down his shocked little face. “Oh, my picture!”, he cried, as Miss Philips dashed in to rescue him. “Look at it Miss! It’s no use now, it’s all
wrecked! And I haven’t put my star in!” Sobbing, he held out the smudged paper. “No you haven’t Daniel”, she exclaimed. “Just look at your star, sparkling away in the sky! Good gracious, that’s my earring! I searched everywhere for it last week and you’ve found it Daniel, thank you! Look, it’s stuck on your picture, there it is! Sparkling away in the black sky. Now it’s your star for the wise kings to follow. You can keep it to shine for Christmas and for you always. Now your picture is lovely for your Mam”. “Will she like it?” gulped Daniel through his tears. “It will be the best and brightest present she’s ever had”. smiled his teacher.

was the star? He had forgotten to paint it. How on earth could he make a star shine on top of all that thick black painted sky? Where was the yellow paint? Here was the pot, but it was totally empty! He had used up the last drop of yellow paint to do his bag of gold coins.

the Friends of Seaford Library The 11th AGM of the Friends of Seaford Library (FOSL) was held at St Peter’s Chapel Rooms, Belgrave Road, Seaford, on 2.11.2012. The meeting was chaired by the new Chairman, Elizabeth Woodruff, a retired chartered librarian. The Secretary (Anne Ford-Smith) and the Treasurer (Barry Hoad) were introduced, along with other Committee Members: Jennifer Moriarty and Bob Brown, (and Sue Shephard in absentia). Jennifer had announced her retirement after 9 years on the committee and she was praised for all the hard work she had contributed to FOSL. The past Chairman (Shirley Linsell) and the past Treasurer (Roy Linsell) were unanimously confirmed as Honorary Life Members of the Friends of Seaford Library. During the year FOSL held a Bumper Book Sale, which made over £270 for its funds, and organised an outing to the the East Sussex Records Office in the Maltings at Lewes, where they were shown many interesting items relating to Seaford and the Library. Sophia Harvey, the Area Manager West from the East Sussex County Council Library and Information Services, spoke enthusiastically about the new library, which it is expected will be operational early in 2014. She reported that the new facility will occupy three floors at the Sutton Park Road end of Warwick House. On the ground floor there will be a welcoming display area, the children’s library and a cafe. On the first floor there will be more conventional library space and, it is hoped, a ‘glass quiet room’ equipped with tables and computer terminals. On the top floor there will be meeting rooms that will be available for hire as well as library use. It is planned to have a total of 13 computer terminals and the building will be WiFi enabled. After answering several questions about reference books, the meeting rooms and computer provision, Sophia rounded off by telling the Friends that there will eventually be a more informative hoarding round the Warwick House construction site, with vision panels, diagrams of the new building and directional signs to the temporary library, as well as possibly some signage at the temporary library itself.

Norman Baker MP, one of FOSL’s Patrons, spoke very favourably about his visit to the temporary library in the spring. He mentioned how pleasantly surprised and impressed he was by the light and welcoming atmosphere in the temporary building and also how successfully so many services had been condensed into such a very small space. Everyone present then enjoyed a delightful speech from Julian Peterson, the Manager of Seaford’s Oxfam Shop, describing many aspects of books and book collecting, ranging from the history of writing to fine book bindings, and even the need for collectors to have reading copies of titles alongside their treasured editions. The Chairman pointed out that the old library was finally demolished at the end of October and now Seaford’s library provision is only that afforded by the temporary library, backed up by the telephone and online services. “So this is the time for the Friends of Seaford Library to focus above all on trying to ensure that they can collect enough money to make a real contribution to the new library, so it will actually be as wonderful in reality as it has been for over a decade in our dreams.” Anyone wishing to find out more about the Friends of Seaford Library can go to its website: www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/fosl for information and to download a membership application form, or contact Elizabeth Woodruff on 01323 896822. The picture shows Sophia Harvey of the ESCC Library and Information Service addressing the AGM, with Elizabeth Woodruff, Chairman, and Anne Ford-Smith, Secretary (taking notes).

Birthday cake and pumpkins It’s not all hard work at Seaford Exchange Garden. Oh no, we know how to party too and in October we celebrated first our fifth birthday and at the end of the month took part in the annual Pumpkin Party. The birthday party marked the inception and growth of the garden at the Crouch, behind the telephone exchange building, following an appeal by Lindsay Thomas and Wendy Simmons to the council to let them take over a large area of derelict land. They envisaged a community garden where volunteers would work together tilling the soil, sowing seeds, taking cuttings, growing plants and vegetables and selling the produce to provide a working profit that would perpetuate the cycle. The volunteers would welcome everybody, inclusive of impairment, and would strive to make the garden accessible to all. That that dream came true is seen in the numbers and diversity of the people who work in the garden on Wednesday mornings throughout the year and on Saturday mornings too in the harvest season, from students to wheelchair users, from those with learning difficulties to retired people with and without horticultural experience. Exchange Garden Team member Dave Grimley spoke about what the garden hopes to achieve in the future and visitors walked on paving recently laid in preparation for a classroom building which will extend what the garden currently offers to volunteers and visitors. The classroom is coming courtesy of a grant from the Keith Baker Trust and the paving means the garden is now wheelchair friendly. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses including Paradise Park and B&Q, Newhaven. Watched by visitors including the High Sheriff of East

Sussex, David Allam, the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Linda Wallraven, the Vice-Chairman of Lewes District Council, Cllr Ruth O’Keefe, and representatives of organisations such as the Rotary Club of Seaford and Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven Lions and Lionesses, local benefactors such as estate agent Stephen Newberry and volunteers past and present, Lindsay and Wendy cut a cake symbolically decorated with seed packets to mark the first five years of a garden that is set to grow and grow in scope and production, providing learning opportunities, enjoyment and fresh fruit and vegetables for all. The Rotary Club was represented at the Pumpkin Party organised between the Exchange Project, Seaford Family Focus Group and Friends of the Crouch by President Paul Vaesen and his wife Daphne. The poor weather forecast meant the organisers had to abandon the usual custom of children making pumpkin lanterns in the gardens and instead they had to carve out fantastic creations at home. But more than 60 families happily ignored the evening drizzle to parade lanterns around the gardens accompanied by guitar music. Warming refreshments including pumpkin soup were served while the pumpkins were judged, and then prizes were presented for the best ones. This year, for the first time, two cups were presented, by Aideen and Denis Jones and by Lindsay Thomas. President Paul had the pleasure of presenting prizes to eight winners of the pumpkin competition that the Rotary Club had donated. But was it a coincidence that after this party Monica and Cameron were seen planting garlic cloves into a freshly dug bed? The spirit of Halloween lives on... and Christmas is fast approaching, when daffodils, hyacinths and festive wreaths will be on sale. See you there. The Garden Team Photo: Winning entries of the adult and children’s halloween pumpkin competition were made by Keir and Sorcha Rumsey of Seaford.

They are now powerful enough to effectively run pond water pumps, fountains and spotlights, whether underwater or above ground. They therefore remove the need to run mains electricity up or around the garden. Most include a battery storage charger so that they automatically switch on after dark. coloured lights. Aquatic water pumps, fountains, lily pads can be most attractive in small ponds and are safe near children. Outdoor barbeque or patio areas can be livened up with strings of up to 50 multicoloured lights. These are for indoor or outdoor use. They also make ideal Christmas presents. Solar items have certainly come a long way in recent years and are well worth looking at.
th
A
re solar garden products worth looking at? Up until earlier this year I would have been very cautious about purchasing any solar garden article, having had several disappointing experiences in the past. Items that “light up” have been very poor, batteries soon ran down and most items seem to made of cheap-grade plastic. However “times they are a changing” as they say. Modern solar products have now come into the twenty-first century and are becoming very popular and useful.
INSECTIVEROUS PLANTS
Want ideas for unusual Christmas presents for the gardener who thinks they’ve tried every thing or maybe for young children, then try Insectivorous Plants. These come from around the world where the soil is very poor or boggy. They have evolved ways of obtaining nutrients by catching their own food. These can be the popular Venus Fly Trap, Pitcher Plants, Butterworts or Sundews. The most popular and well known is the Venus Fly Trap; this is usually were children start to get interested. Small hairs on the surface of the trap trigger the traps. Some say that they are difficult to grow but if grown in the right conditions the plant will last for many years. However it is vital not to trigger the traps yourself. This uses up a lot of energy for the plant and it will die. Another popular variety is the Sarracenia or Pitcher Plants. These entice their prey by producing sticky sweet nectar on their edge. The insect slips over the edge and cannot get out. These plants come in various sizes with a range of red and green patterns on the pitchers or bowls. The third popular type is the Sundews. These catch flies on their sticky tentacles, which may then curl around their prey. Their preferred menu covers Blackfly, Whitefly and Fruit Flies. The most important thing to remember with maintaining healthy insectivorous plants is to water them only with rainwater. Never use tap water. In an emergency use distilled or cold boiled water. And finally do not be tempted to feed your plants. They will feed themselves! Mike Parker (Chairman)

Halloween has been and gone with the witches flying off on their broomsticks accompanied by their black cats! Seaford bonfire night went with a bang and brightly coloured fireworks lit the skies and now we are looking forward to all the festivities of Christmas. We must not forget the garden though, as on brighter days we can still clean down patios and paths and perhaps carry out a last minute tidy up before the colder weather sets in. Even on bad weather days we can plan ahead with seed catalogues open to choose our displays for next Spring. Our talk Seaford on 31st October by Peter Hill entitled ‘A Guernsey Travelogue’ took us on a journey round the coastline of the 24-square mile island. The present-day industry is mainly tourism, cut flowers and off-shore banking. It is a place for peace and quiet reached by small aircraft and ferry services. If you feel energetic enough you could swim the 75 miles from the mainland! We started at St Peter Port, choosing Castle Cornet as a vantage point to watch the coming and going of various boats etc. The noon-day gun is still fired using the church clock as a time keeper. All major services are held there (some by invitation only!). Kandy Gardens has a micro climate so many species are protected from the colder weather and can be left out through the winter. Spring time is best for a visit to the island as many species flourish and cut flowers are exported to England and France. Tea rooms abound which serve the famous Guernsey fruit loaf spread with their delicious butter! Of course there are a few reminders of the German invasion during the Second World War – a gun emplacement has been reinstated – luckily there was not any blood spilt during this time, just uncomfortable memories for some of the inhabitants. The island has its own form of a National Trust Society, and there are many gardens and stately houses to visit. Wildlife is also abundant and the rugged parts of the coastline are a joy to behold – a lovely island to spend a holiday. Mr Hill kept us interested for just over an hour and we have already booked his services again for next year. Our next talk will be on Weds 30 Jan at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (entrance door opposite Tesco’s) when Mr Kevin Gordon will take us on ‘A Walk Around Alfriston’. Do come and join us either as a visitor for £2 or join as a member for a fee of £10 – you are more than welcome. The outings programme for 2013 will be available. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

SEAFORD TREE WARDENS The worrying prospect of ash dieback spreading across Britain will bring back memories of Dutch Elm Disease for many people. Sussex still retains one of the largest populations of elms surviving in the UK, because the South Downs provided a natural barrier against the disease. Nevertheless, each year elms are lost, many Seaford residents will have been dismayed to see the large number of elm trees succumbing to Dutch Elm Disease this year. Once the trees are attacked, the only course of action is to remove the tree to stop the disease spreading to other elms. The removal of so many mature elms in the Seaford is a sad loss to our town, but the Seaford Tree Wardens are working hard on their mission to make Seaford a town full of trees, with a full planting schedule for the coming autumn and spring. Keith Blackburn, Chair of the Tree Wardens, says: “On December 1st, the Wardens will be joining forces with the Mercread Youth Centre, Seaford Football Club and Seaford Rotary Club to plant thirty or so trees in Crouch Gardens.”
Green Waste Recycling Service
In the spring, the focus will move to the Chyngton area of the town. Last year the Wardens worked with residents to plant over 30 trees in Saltwood Road, The Shepway and Chyngton Avenue This was so successful that other residents in the same area have approached the Tree Wardens, asking for more trees. The result is another planting programme planned for the new year, where more street trees will be planted with the help of residents and children from Chyngton Primary School. The Tree Wardens have also been working with local schools to plant trees: a mini woodland of native species planted by children at Cradle Hill School last spring is doing well. The Wardens are now working with other schools, and at Bowden House School a mixture of native species will be planted to encourage wildlife and help screen the new school buildings. With the prospect of ash dieback and other diseases spreading to the UK, it is more important than ever to plant a diverse range of species in the town. A new pilot venture this year will be the underplanting of some of the new trees with wildflowers. If this is successful, the Wardens would like to set up a ‘sister’ group to plant wildflowers and native bulbs in Seaford and would very much like to hear from anyone with an interest or enthusiasm for wildflower planting who might be able to help. And finally, all hope is not lost for the elms. The Tree Wardens plan to take part in the ‘Great British Elm experiment’ run by the Conservation Foundation. Elm saplings believed to be resistant to the disease are being planted all over the UK, and will be studied to see if they remain healthy. Elm disease tends to strike the trees when they are 15 - 20 years old, so it is a longterm project. But worth it, we think, if it means that eventually these beautiful trees might make a return to our landscape. The Seaford Tree Wardens are a voluntary group and are always looking for new members or helpers. You don’t have to be a tree expert! If you would like to help with tree planting, learn more about the work of the tree wardens, help with planting wildflowers or ask about planting a tree in your street please contact Margery Diamand at margerydiamand@hotmail.com or 01323 873475; or Jenny Tillyard at walter.tillyard@ btinternet.com.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.
