Presentation to Christmas Window Winners
Many of Seaford’s shops took part in the recent Christmas Window Dressing competition, bringing an abundance of tinsel, lights and a great variety of festive decorations on display prepared for judging on 4th December. The judging panel consisted of the Mayor of Seaford Mark Brown, Mayor of Telscombe Cliffs, Wayne Botting, Mayor of Peacehaven, Robbie Robertson, Dave Argent and Joe Fackler (Seaford Chamber of Commerce), Freeman of the Town, Laurie Holland, and President of the Seahaven Lionesses Brenda Gomersall. The panel voted accordingly and the results were very close. The winners were revealed on 6th December as

part of the Mayor’s speech at Christmas Magic. Certificates were presented on the day to the winners by the Mayor of Seaford. First place was awarded to Premier Travel for their lovely snow scene and baby deer featuring as part of the display. Second place was awarded to Foam & Fabrics for a wonderful use of products and great handmade crafts. Third place went to Wynne’s, whose sleeping Santa Claus captured the attention of the judges. On 23rd December representatives of the winning businesses were invited to attend the Council Chambers to receive their prizes, vouchers for their choice of restaurant in Seaford, which were presented to them by Mayor Mark Brown. Mayor Brown said, “We would like to thank all those who took part in the competition this year. It was great to see everyone getting into the festive spirit and trying their best. We believed it was appropriate that the prizes given to the winners would support local businesses. I look forward to seeing next year’s displays.” Photo left: Mayor of Seaford Mark Brown with first place winners Premier Travel, right: The Mayor with 2nd place winner Foam and Fabrics

MORE NEEDY FAMILIES FED THIS CHRISTMAS Seahaven Storehouse fed a much larger number of families at Christmas 2013 than ever before, evidencing that there is great need among many people in Seahaven. The generosity of so many people in the area made this possible; schools, churches, other charities and business organisations, as well as many individuals, all made it possible to feed the ever-growing number of families and individuals in food crisis this Christmas. Dawn Woodgate, who heads up the Storehouse ministry from the Community Church in Vale Road said, “In the run-up to the 2014 Christmas period, when calls began coming in, I was wondering if we would have enough food to satisfy everyone. However, as a team we prayed that we should have

sufficient to give every person who needed help, with a little left over on the shelves to start off the new year. Within forty-eight hours I had received gifts of money and goods to make a good start on the Christmas hampers. “We held two collection days in Morrisons, and both yielded many kilos of food necessities, as well as the little extras that always make Christmas feel a bit special. Morrisons also themselves most generously added a further trolleyload of shopping to our haul. We were also very grateful to the staff in the Co-op, who held a Christmas dressing-up day and contributed, together with shoppers, to filling the new bin there to the brim with essential items. “The result was that we were able to give out thirtyeight food parcels the week before Christmas, as well as fifty-three Christmas hampers and we had enough food left over to start us off in January. “We are so grateful for the many donations of money (many anonymous) and food that the kind people of Seaford have given over this period. It has gone to help a number of families and individuals who are currently struggling to put food on the table. Thank you all so much. Please could I ask you to remember us during the year as well, as the need persists even though Christmas is over.” For more information, or to find out what is the current need, please contact Dawn on 07921 844930 or e-mail seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com.

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB December was a very busy month for the Lions, raising money and celebrating. We are a very social club who enjoy our food and get togethers. We started the month with mulled wine and nibbles at our past president’s home and finished the month with mulled wine and buffet at our current president’s and somewhere in between we had our Christmas dinner at the Cuckmere Inn! You may have seen in the local pubs our Christmas Raffle cards. All you needed to do was buy a square and if you were lucky you won the prize of wine. We have sold twelve cards, nine in local pubs and we would like to thank all the pubs that took part in the draw. We also sold squares on the two Fridays before Christmas at Sainsbury’s and raised over £300. The money will go to the Lions Ebola Orphan’s Relief Aid Programme. All the money sent will be used for this programme as the Lions themselves pay all administration costs. Saturday 13th December saw us at the Peacehaven Christmas event in the Meridian Centre, where we

sold hot roasted chestnuts. The money raised here will also go to the Ebola Appeal. This was our busiest weekend because on Sunday 14th December, we entertained about 100 elderly people with tea and a concert in the Meridian Centre. We picked up many on a bus or with our own minibuses and took them to the centre where we put on a variety concert and the Lionesses made a tea for them during the interval. We took them home afterwards – well we would have taken them home but the bus broke down! Still we got them all home with their presents after the concert. We were able to take our sleigh out on three evenings the week before Christmas and spread some Christmas jollity around Peacehaven. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Peacehaven, we collected over £700 on those three evenings. This will be used for the benefit of the local community and people like Leisha. If you remember we donated to the Mayor of Telscombe’s “Stand up for Leisha” appeal and a very special wheelchair was presented to Leisha by the Mayor of Telscombe, Councillor Wayne Botting on 20th December, an early Christmas present. Our picture was taken with Leisha at the presentation. We have continued to drive our minibuses to help the older people to get to their clubs and Christmas dinners. We regularly drive for the Good Companions, The Inner Light and Hard of Hearing Clubs, also several church groups – the Crossways Ladies and Encompass (St Luke’s Church). We do work hard to SERVE the community, but we also have fun and enjoy the companionship of fellow members. If you have time and would like to help your community give us a call. The Club meets at 8pm on the fourth Thursday of each month at the White Lion Hotel, Seaford. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, ie if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses.

LOCAL CRIME
The latest initiative from Sussex NHW is to start a Junior Neighbourhood Watch scheme. More details to follow later.
We would just like to remind readers that the 2015 Subscriptions are now due and at the time of writing, we are very pleased to have had over 600 Renewals and New Members registered so far for 2015. We anticipate more households will join following this Newsletter and the next one in the Spring, and our aim is to exceed the 2014 Membership figure of 1100. Subscription rates have been maintained again at £3 per year per household, reduced to £2 for Senior Citizens. This is excellent value and gives you:

At one of the recent Police Panel Meetings, we heard a very encouraging report from Sgt Mullins concerning local crime issues. The main points were that in respect of the spate of break-ins last summer/autumn, there was a suspect they had in mind, and he has now been apprehended. Since then, the number of break-ins has dropped considerably, and overall crime figures are down when compared to last year. Most household crime in Seaford falls into the “opportunist” category, so anything you can do to reduce the opportunity reduces your chances of becoming a victim. Sussex Police are currently
Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’ running a “Leave a Light on” campaign. Please see Sussex Police website for details. The Police also advise us to be aware of Distraction Thefts, where you are at a cash point or shop till etc and a bystander distracts you with a spurious enquiry. Whilst your attention is diverted, an accomplice tries to steal your wallet, purse, cash or your cards etc. The other hot topic, which is also mentioned in the national press, is a phone scam, whereby the caller pretends to be a Police Officer and advises you your cards have been stolen or copied and asks you to confirm your details to your bank. The caller actually holds on the line, and then pretends to be the Bank Official when you have redialled and asks for your numbers and PIN etc. Please do not fall for this scam and do not confirm your card number or PIN to anybody – your bank would never ask you to do this themselves, so beware if you get targeted this way. We receive regular updates and information from Sgt Stuart Mullins of Sussex Police and where pertinent these are forwarded to members who have provided an email address. Although Seaford is a low crime and anti-social behaviour area, we can all play a part in keeping it that way by taking a few simple and sensible precautions. • When leaving your property unattended always make sure doors and windows are secure. • If you are going away for a few days ask a trusted neighbour to keep and eye on your home. • Don’t let anyone purporting to be an official into your home without first seeing their identification, even then you may wish to check with the organisation they work for before allowing them access. • Never give details of your bank account, PIN numbers or passwords to anyone over the
telephone – genuine banks would not ask for such details by that means of communication. • When leaving your vehicle parked and unattended, make sure that it is secure NEVER leave items capable of being stolen on display, that makes your vehicle a target, place such items out of sight or in the boot.
DELIVERERS MEETING:
We held a very successful Deliverers Meeting on 6th November, where many existing and some new deliverers came forward to volunteer to deliver to some of the roads in Seaford that we do not cover. This commitment is modest, a few hours twice a year and you can pick a time suitable to your own diary. All we ask is that you deliver the Newsletters within a reasonable time of receiving them from us. If you have any spare time please look at the list of uncovered roads at the end of the newsletter. Some are just a block of flats or part of a road, so if you do think you could help please contact Nicola Slater, Publicity Officer.

Playing Fair – What is Fairtrade Fortnight and why do we need it? Fairtrade fortnight takes place this year between 23rd February and 8th March 2015, and aims to continue to raise awareness and change behaviour around this important topic. Research shows that whilst 78% of the UK population recognise the Fairtrade Mark, over 50% still do not actively choose Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is about getting better prices, working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities, so that they have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. It is now possible to buy around over 4,500 products officially branded Fairtrade including: Tea, Coffee, Bananas, Chocolate, Gold, Flowers, Cotton and Sugar. Sadly however, only 1.2% of cocoa and 10% of tea globally are traded on Fairtrade terms. Did you check the packaging for the Fairtrade logo when you last bought some tea?
The Fairtrade mark means that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet social, environmental and economic Fairtrade standards. These standards help to protect workers’ rights and environment. They also ensure payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price for the commodity, and an additional Fairtrade Premium which is invested into the business or community projects. Small scale farmers and workers are amongst the most marginalized globally, and Fairtrade helps them through trade, not aid, providing stable income to help them plan. Fairtrade only certifies small scale farmer organisations for products such as cocoa, cotton and rice, but does certify plantations with larger numbers of employees for goods such as tea, bananas and flowers. The standards required for larger organisations include allowing them freedom of association and collective bargaining, and prevention of discrimination and child labour. The producers decide how the Fairtrade premium is invested. Often this will be in schools, transport, health care and better business equipment and practices. There are over 1.4 million farmers and workers in 1,140 producer organisations within the Fairtrade System. These are across 74 different countries and four continents. Fairtrade.org.uk would love people to get involved during Fairtrade fortnight. Here are some suggested activities to increase awareness and raise money. Create a Fairtrade Trail around your local area highlighting those selling Fairtrade products. Build a model of something funded from Fairtrade premium such as a school or health centre, and display this in a prominent place to make it a talking point. Have some fun creating a special event. This could be a film evening showing the Fairtrade film, or something more elaborate such as a Come Dine With Me experience. Tasting events featuring Fairtrade produce are also popular. JOBS TO DO IN FEBRUARY
3 Keep the pond free of ice. Knock snow off
trees and shrubs to avoid damage. Take care if garden paths are icy. 3 Towards the end of the month you can sow bedding plants such as Antirrhinums and African Marigolds. 3 Order or buy summer flowering bulbs, corms or tubers (ie: tuberous begonias) that need starting off under glass or indoors. 3 Transplant into small pots any rooted cuttings from fuchsias taken last autumn. 3 Inspect Dahlia tubers every few weeks. Towards the end of the month take cuttings if you have a heated greenhouse or a heated propagator. A daily spray of tepid water will encourage the growth of new shoots.

Most bananas do well in containers but this will restrict growth. Container grown plants are ideal for filling vacant spaces as they appear during the summer. Just pop in the container and transform the garden. Most bananas are frost tolerant but will need care if left outside during the winter months (November to May). Wrap the plant to d
within a wire cage and fill the inside with plenty of straw for protection. A waterproof cap on top is a good idea. Unwrap when danger of frost has passed. The plant may well look sad at first but will soon recover in the sunshine. Use a general fertilizer during the growing season. However, sprinkle it well away from the main trunk. An occasional acidic feed also helps. Bananas grow well from seed. Plants and seed can be obtained from most garden centres. Recommended seed from Thomson & Morgan is Ensete ventricosum, very fast growing. Musa lasiocarpa, the Chinese yellow flower banana is colourful and the most hardy of all Musa basjoo. Mike Parker th on
ananas are very interesting plants to grow in your Sussex garden. With a little care they can become a main focal point in your garden design. Bananas can be grown in full sun or shade, with the ideal position in 65% sun and 35% shade. If grown in full sun they will need more water because of increased water loss with their large leaves. When grown in a little shade they will look more green and healthy but growth will be slower. When planted in an open garden they prefer to be free draining with plenty of rich garden compost or manure. Some varieties are very fast growing and when established may put on six to ten feet in one season.
RARE OR UNUSUAL VEGETABLES FOR THE TABLE
Salsify/Scorzonera Tragopogon Porrifolius/Hispanicus.
Salsify is more commonly called the “vegetable oyster” or “oyster plant” because its roots are said to taste like oysters. It originally came from France and is closely related to its Spanish cousin the Black Scorzonera. Both should be grown in fine deep soil with no added manure, similar to exhibition carrots and parsnips. Both Salsify and Scorzonera should be sown in March or April with a light covering of soil. Thin to four then finally eight inches apart. Both will fork if the ground is stony. Harvest from August to December. Care must be taken when lifting the roots as they are easily broken. Once lifted use quickly as they often loose their flavour, especially if the roots are damaged. Both can be baked, steamed, boiled, or used in soups and stews. Both are a good source of vitamin C and potassium. Scorzonera is also said to be a good companion plant to repel carrot fly! Seed can be obtained from most good garden centres.

Seaford Gardening Club All the festivities are now over and we are well into a new year. I wonder what 2015 has in store for us all? At least the weather is not too severe as yet. Christmas Day was such a lovely bright day it brought many people out to walk off all that rich food and drink and take in the crisp air. By the time this report goes to print the gardens will be thinking of waking up, with spring bulbs coming through to brighten our days. Winter blossom has helped brighten drab days. No talk in December, but 29 members and guests enjoyed a lovely festive meal at the Avondale Hotel in Seaford. Jane, Martin and their staff made us feel most welcome. The tables and room were very colourful, the meal was delicious and everyone had a go at the usual quiz and raffle – a good evening enjoyed by us all. Our next talk on Wednesday 25th February will be given by Wing Commander Patrick Coulcher and he will tell us about “Wordsworth and the Lakes”. The evening will commence at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (please use front door opposite Tesco).Visitors are very welcome for a fee of £2. If you wish to join for the year (up to June meeting) the cost will be £10. There are no extra charges. Refreshments are available and a raffle is held on some evenings. More information is available by visiting the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. Please come along and meet a friendly gathering. Hope to see you there.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR at THE GALLEY CAFÉ Well you can do just that in the Galley Café at Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club, with three different sharing platters to choose from. And as it’s Valentine’s Day this month, chef Steve has also created a special dessert platter to share – a trio of sweet indulgences! But first there are the platters to enjoy – Baked Camembert served with two warm, crusty baguettes, garnished with a crispy green salad, olives and feta cheese. Dip your french bread into the warm, gooey Camembert – it’s great fun and very tasty! Or you could choose the meat platter – spicy chorizo, Serrano and sweet Parma ham served with soft ciabatta, olives, roasted peppers and dipping oil. Alternatively, you could go traditional with the English Cheese Board – Stilton, Cornish Brie and Smoked Sussex, two ciabatta rolls and delicious homemade pear and walnut chutney. Once again, Steve has come up trumps! Then, if you still have room for more, there’s the dessert platter of Chocolate Brownie, White Chocolate and Raspberry Blondie with warm chocolate sauce... all just gorgeous! Sharing is such a lovely way to enjoy food, a little bit of this and a little bit of that...mind you, I think I’d prefer to have the dessert all to myself, thank you! Please note that the sharing dessert platter is only available from 1st to 13th February. Mussels & Muscadet Lunch – 28th February, booking essential on 01323 890077. The Galley at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Entry is from the car park on Marine Drive (next to the Buckle Holiday Park) or from the beach.

The Synergy Theatre Presents
The Importance of Being Earnest
Continuing their 2014/2015 Season, after their autumn production of Our Town, The Synergy Theatre is delighted to be returning to The Clinton Centre with Oscar Wilde’s “trivial comedy for serious people”, The Importance of Being Earnest. Memorably adapted for the screen in both 1952 and 2002, Earnest is perhaps Wilde’s best-loved comedy. Sparkling wit, razor-sharp put downs, possibly the only use in theatre of sugar lumps and fruit cake as weapons of revenge and, of course, The Handbag. Come prepared to giggle, guffaw and generally have a jolly good time! A special feature of the performance on Friday 13th, will be a Late Afternoon Tea in the company of Lady Bracknell and the cast, which will begin at 6.30pm. Tickets for “Lady Bracknell At Home’’ will be £14 (£12 concessions) to include afternoon tea. A lovely opportunity to meet the cast and enjoy homemade delicacies served by Lady Bracknell’s personal staff! Pre-booking for ‘Lady Bracknell ‘At Home’’ is essential – please contact our Box Office, who will be happy to provide further details. As always, we are proud to be featuring a cast of outstanding local actors, including Peter Linsdell and Josh Impey as Algernon and Jack, Josie Hobbs and John Hamilton as Miss Prism and Dr. Chasuble, Kim Payne as Gwendolen, Ian Clegg and Darren Heather as the ever-so-discreet butlers, Merriman and Lane and, making her Synergy debut, Ella Dorman-Gajic as ‘Cecily’. The cast is completed by Ann Mabey as the redoubtable society matriarch, Lady Bracknell. The Importance of Being Earnest runs from Tuesday 10th – Saturday 14th February, at 7.30pm.

Seaford Little Theatre presents
Humble Boy
In Humble Boy, Charlotte Jones’ gentle reworking of Hamlet, the melancholy Dane is a fat, short, stuttering geek, Ophelia a reformed floozy, Gertrude an out-andout bitch and Claudius a randy neighbour with a Glenn Miller obsession. Astrophysicist and socially challenged Felix Humble returns home from his research post in Cambridge for his bee-keeper father’s funeral and is immediately at loggerheads with his imperious, self-centred, mother, Flora, who is understandably incensed that Felix failed to attend the funeral to deliver the planned oration for his father. Back in his childhood home (until the age of seven when he was packed off to prep school for an expensive and apparently academically successful education), Felix is like a fish out of water. Everything is out of joint. His father’s bees have stopped buzzing; his mother has lost her sense of smell and his childhood stammer has returned. The only person with whom Felix can have any meaningful conversation is the taciturn, mysterious gardener, Jim, who quietly goes on tending the Humble’s lovely garden amidst the increasingly volatile family passions.

The difficult relationships Felix has with his Queen Bee of a mother and his former girlfriend, Rosie, are played out in the garden as he grieves and eventually comes to understand a little more about love. Humble Boy won the Critics’ Circle Best New Play Award and the People’s Choice Best New Play Award in 2002. “Rich, original, intelligent, funny and touching. I can’t recommend this lovely play too highly.” Daily Telegraph. Please note that this play contains scenes and strong language that some people may find offensive.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Concentus Sings Christmas REVIEW
St Leonard’s Church, 13th December
Concentus has given us another very enjoyable concert, with a programme which could hardly have been more varied. We were entertained, stimulated, soothed and moved by pieces such as Sleigh Ride (Anderson), Zadok the Priest (Handel), Cantique (Faure), and May the Lord send Angels (Anon). This is to mention just a few of the 23 items on the programme, which included a witty monologue, several pieces sung by 3 groups of differing sizes drawn from the choir, soloists from the choir, and carols sung together with the audience.

When the Saints go Marching in (traditional), had the audience stirred as they went to enjoy the interval refreshments, and the last item, The Heavens are Telling (Haydn), left them wishing for more as they left the church. This large choir (90+ members) always delights with the obvious whole-hearted enjoyment with which the members sing, and the professionalism it achieves in its performances, both in the standard of singing and in the way the choir presents itself. The accompanists – Colin Hughes, (Head of Music, Bede’s School) pianist, and John Ross, (former Head, Bishop Bell School) organist, – are spoken of by those who know as being of the highest order, and Concentus is very lucky to have their services. A retiring collection was taken for the choir’s local charity – the JPK Project, which aims to provide a Supported Living Centre for local people with a learning disability. Concentus has already raised £20,000 for them. The next full concerts by Concentus will be on 13th June in Seaford, and on 20th June in Eastbourne. Over the summer there are plans for several, more informal, appearances at significant events in Eastbourne, and there are hopes to do the same in Seaford. Concentus is always happy to welcome new members to the choir. Members come from Eastbourne, Seaford and the surrounding areas. Seaford members car-share to rehearsals. So, if you would like to gladden your heart with good singing and harmonious company, then contact the secretary, Evelyn, on 01323 643358, or email supergran009@aol.com.

Rotary Club of Seaford Santa’s Sleigh Ride 2014
Another marathon took place every day or evening (except Sundays) from the first of December to Christmas Eve as Santa travelled through the highways and byways of Seaford. The welcome from children of all ages was, as usual, spectacular! The takings from the public was a new record amount of £9,090.98, and as always, net proceeds will go to charities and worthy causes. Thanks are due to all those who supported us, including those who donated, the children who came to see Santa, as well as friends and Rotarians who helped with collections.

Grand Rotary Charity Quiz Night
The fundraising for 2015 begins in earnest on Friday 27th March 2015, with the annual Grand Rotary Charity Quiz Night in aid of the Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust. This event is great fun and always well attended by local quiz teams competing for the “famous” trophy. We have a new venue for this year’s Quiz – St Leonards Church Hall, Church Lane, Seaford. Teams that competed last year will be automatically invited to take part, but new teams are always welcome, and you can apply for an entry form from Mike Roper (details below). Teams consist of no more than 4 persons and costs are £30 per team, which includes supper, and we invite you to bring your own liquid refreshment. We will also run a high-quality, sponsored raffle with attractive prizes. Further details will soon appear on our web site www.seafordrotary.org.uk. If you would like to enter or simply require further information please contact Mike Roper by email at events@seafordrotary.org.uk or by telephone on 01323 873988. For complicated reasons related to the current strain on Local Government, we are with regret having to postpone the Hillside Avenue scheme, pencilled in for February, until Autumn 2015. We specially regret this because the Chyngton Residents’ Association, on dissolving, donated over £750 for tree schemes in Chyngton, and we were keen to start. But the schemes in Rother Road and Downs View Road will go ahead in February. A memorial tree in Princes Drive will be replaced, as well as arboreal casualties of cars etc on the A259 Buckle By-pass.

If you support our aims and like working with other people, would you consider joining our shoestring group? We are not experts but learners, trying to mobilise energies and information to promote trees in Seaford. We have about eight brisk meetings a year, plus a couple of days of physical work helping local people with planting. In between we try to educate ourselves about trees, their benefits and problems, and build contact with experts who can help.

If you can’t commit to that, but can give a couple of mornings’ physical work a year to help non-spry residents to plant trees in their streets, we very much welcome you. Spades, biscuits etc, are available and these occasions are very rewarding and usually enjoyable. The next occasion is 14th – 15th February. Some people would prefer summer planting, but unfortunately that doesn’t suit the trees. Please contact Margery Diamand on our website above.

Charity Supports Young Dancers Aspiring young dancers at multiaward winning Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) have been given a boost with a donation from the James Daniels Memorial Fund. SMTJ Director, Paula Woolven, said, “We are really grateful to the James Daniels Memorial Fund for the sponsorship of our dance workshops for 2015 – besides being great fun, dancing has many health benefits for young people. It improves flexibility, strength and endurance and gives a strong sense of wellbeing. Making new friends and socialising in the classes contributes to a high self-esteem and a positive outlook for our members.” The James Daniels Memorial Fund was set up after sports-loving 19-year-old James passed away in a car crash in 2005. He was studying for a degree in PE and teaching at Chichester University, and his parents, Paul and Sarah, set up the fund to support community activities, which help other young people, in memory of James. They have helped dozens of good causes in their area over the last nine years.

Seaford Kurlers
Hello Everyone. Well Christmas and New Year festivities are by now just memories. Always assuming that you were able to recall the night before. Seaford Kurlers are now in the process of renewing their membership for 2015. Let’s hope that we have a good membership and a good year of sport and social activities. As most of our regular readers will know we have a number of outings during the year. We always use ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) Coach Services to transport us to our chosen venues. Sadly I have just recently been informed by ESDA that this arm of the Association has gone into liquidation. This will have an adverse impact on all of the ESDA groups. Most groups are not sports groups but are groups where access to transport and social gatherings are a life line. Many disabled people rely on this type of service to remain active and part of society. Take this away and many other problems arise in their already stressed lives. We hope that another organisation will be able to step in and provide such a service. I am afraid that at the moment it is just a waiting game. Hopefully one way or another we will be able to arrange some trips with our members. Between us all we will likely sort something out. Don’t forget that Seaford Kurlers meet every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford. We break for refreshments at about 3pm. The weekly subs. are £2.50 and the Annual Membership is £5. Your first visit is free. For any other details contact myself, June Wood, Secretary on 01323 895376 or by email at sally1989@tiscali.co.uk June Wood

Running Commentary... When I entered my first London Marathon back in 1985 I had already completed 9 marathons and was hoping to finish in under 3 hours even though my training probably hadn’t been sufficient. However, I don’t think that I’d taken into account the effect on me of running a big city marathon. Every aspect of the day was bigger, more spectacular, noisier… in fact, more everything than any of my previous races. I immersed myself in the friendly and peaceful atmosphere on Blackheath and Greenwich Park as runners quietly prepared themselves for the mass start. I lined up at the “blue” start where runners were packed as tightly as sardines in a tin. The race began. The runners fell silent and the spectators, that respectful guard of honour, began their vocal support, which continued uninterrupted, often deafeningly, for the next 6 hours. Within a mile or two of starting my legs had settled into an instinctive running pace that would get me round the course, while I was simply soaking up the amazingly exciting atmosphere, entranced by the sheer spectacle of running through the streets of London. Music of every genre was blasting out from prepared bandstands, impromptu groups along the pavements and

from upstairs windows. There was constant encouraging banter between the crowds of people and the runners. Running past famous landmarks like the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, also raised the thrill factor. Later, on passing the Tower of London it began to feel like the “last lap” of an athletics track race, even though there were still three miles to go, and I began to overtake runners with ease. Each one I passed gave me the energy to pass more… and more until I seemed to be running faster than at any other stage of the marathon. Unlike nowadays, the finish of the race in 1985 was not in The Mall but on Westminster Bridge, and I stormed over the finishing line in 2hrs 44mins. I am certain it wasn’t my training that helped me to reduce my PB by so much, but the motivation of the event itself. There are many things that drive us to run further and faster but being receptive to the “start to finish” stimuli in the race was more effective than anything I’d ever experienced. While the London Marathon has them in abundance, it must not be forgotten that other races can be just as inspirational. In our local Beachy Head Marathon for instance, it’s not “bricks and mortar” but the beauty of the countryside that, despite its 20 steep climbs, propels us to the finish. Added motivation can also work during training runs. It’s just a matter of being alert to the possibilities and then responding. Seaford Strider, Glynis Young, ran her first marathon in London and was so motivated (or captivated) that it wasn’t until she’d reached the 16-mile point that she realised every mile was marked with a huge arch of balloons and an enormous mileage board. Glynis was hoping to break 5 hours or even manage a 4.30 finishing time, but instead clocked 4.21. Every runner responds differently to situations. Some hate hills while others thrive on them. There are runners who get enjoyment from music via headphones while many find it fun and inspiring to hear and see live bands playing on the course. Whatever the impetus, when runners are truly motivated, the way is open to reach their full potential. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

Are you looking to get fit or simply looking for a New Year challenge? Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for runners and cyclists to sign up to a number of challenge and fitness events in 2015 as the charity celebrates its 25th anniversary. The charity has places available for the Brighton Marathon on 12th April, when air ambulance paramedic Lewis Price will be among the runners, and the London 10k on 12th July. All entrants will be supported and given sponsor forms, a fundraising pack, training guides, an air ambulance running vest and a chance to see the helicopter and meet the crew. Riders are also needed for the charity’s Double 100 Cycle Challenge on 27th September, a 100mile or 100km bike ride which will this year include a 25-mile route. Community Fundraising Officer, Michelle Woodland, said: “This is the traditionally the time of year when people are looking to get in shape and set their targets for the year ahead. This is a really special year for us at the air ambulance as we celebrate our Silver Jubilee so please get involved and be part of it by taking on one of our challenges.” Other events in the fundraising calendar include the GS Avanti Kentish Killer on 15th February, Hastings Half Marathon (22nd March), Paddock Wood Half Marathon (29th March), Brighton 10k (12th April), Warrior Run (19th April), Tonbridge Triathlon (4th May), London to Brighton 100k Challenge (23rd/24th May), BUPA London 10k (25th May), Reigate Half Marathon (20th September), Bexhill Triathlon and Duathlon (27th September), and Barns Green Half Marathon (also 27th September). Gellux Nails and Manicures
Gellux is perfect for natural nails, on fingers or toes for instant, long lasting, vibrant colour. The polish dries instantly - no waiting for polish to dry means no accidental smudges and a long lasting glossy finish. Gellux is a hybrid between traditional nail polish and salon gels, it is applied like a polish but with a hard wearing chip, scratch and fade proof finish that lasts up to 15 days. It is easily removed in approx 20 minutes, using finger foil parcels and remover. Gellux causes no more harm to the natural nail than a traditional nail polish and can even help to protect the natural nail from bumps and breaks. It can be applied over any nail extension system.

CHAIRMANS WINTER NEWS A Very Happy New Year to all our volunteers and supporters Thanks to Seaford Scene and other press coverage over the year. I believe our profile is as high as it has ever been. Donations this year have again been good: A legacy of £30K. arrived in December. We are still receiving £20 per month from Sonia Marshall, thanks for her generosity. Janet White and her ladies cooked and served the annual Tuesday Lunch Club Christmas Dinner on 16th December. Members enjoyed a complimentary meal with wine and sherry, and a good time was had by all. The music for carol singing, was kindly provided by Margaret Darwall-Smith. I once again thank particularly: Janet,Yvonne, Jean and their teams of volunteers for all the work they have put in this year. Also thanks to the Bus Drivers and Escorts and all the Reception volunteers for their regular commitment to the cause; Alan Smith for organising the bus rota and all
of the 50 odd volunteers who must not go unmentioned. Thanks to Charles and Elizabeth, who have continued with the monthly Music Afternoons in spite of Charles ill health. Gerry has continued to keep the outside clean and do all our odd jobs around the place. Jill has been overseeing the bookings and Linda doing a great job helping Janet with accounts and banking. We have at last sold the Old Wagon Factory to Warren Medlocks’ building company and work has started on the site. There is a small local issue to be resolved, so the planned refurbishment of the Meeting Room and the Lift Room are on hold until things are sorted out. When this work is finally completed we will be able to use the lift for our clients and have a warm and bright meeting room, along with an administration office that does not leak like a sieve every time it rains. Car Parking is now available at the rear of the property for use by volunteers only, access via Brooklyn Road through Jermyn’s yard. Sadly the Bus is still under used – it is still available to local nursing homes for resident’s trips. Alan Smith has taken over the Driver/Escort rota from Colin. Colin underwent heart surgery at the end of the year and is recuperating. We wish him a speedy recovery and thank him for all his assistance over the year. We provided transport for the Rotary Annual Tea Party once again held at St. James’. We now have new windows on the top floor of the Club House and hope to replace the final three windows in the kitchenette early next year, I am happy to report that we will soon be able to upgrade our heating and Janet has negotiated very good terms for another year with our electricity supplier. Fund raising has been disappointing this year with Pats Sainsbury collections yielding poor results, while a small number of volunteers suffered in the cold. Next year Viv will be looking at different ways of making money for both major and minor funding, and to increase our profile in the area. Viv will also be actively looking for new volunteers. We need to find a way of raising money locally that gives something back for donations; there are far too many tin collections at local supermarkets and on the streets people are getting a bit fed up with this. Yvonne is now overseeing the Charity Shop and it is continuing to do well with a good team of volunteers, whilst Jean Staff and her volunteers are keeping the Drop In going at the Old Town Hall and it is only just covering its ever rising costs. The lease is up for renewal in 2015.

We have a new Trustee-Director, Alan Smith, and Viv has resigned as a Trustee to take up the full time job of Trust Administration Manager. Pat Case sadly resigned from the Trust after many years and vital service, at present we have no volunteers to take on her jobs. I handed over the Chair of the Management Committee to Viv in December and she will now take on the day to day running of the Charity instructed by and answerable to the Trustees/Directors. I will carry on as Chairman of the Trustees. Joyce Woodgate has also left the Committee.
SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB
Once again we must thank Steve Silver of “Inside Out” for dropping everything to leap to our assistance when we sprang a leak or bits fell off. There is still a long way to go but we can at last see a light at the end of the tunnel, there is a lot of decorating and shifting of mains utilities that Medlock’s will assist with. We will also need to replace the old chairs that are tearing the floors to pieces.
2014 ended with two demonstrations. In November Stephanie Laing presented “Inspired by...” which related to various containers which other demonstrators had given. She also judged the competition dispensing praise, advice and encouragement, just as a judge should! On 5th December members each made a Christ as arrangement from a small round white table centre to a large stand containing two back to back designs. The third design came on three descending pedestals and the fourth was very contemporary with ribbon woven through phormium leaves – we may see other competition entries during the year with similar weaves. Lastly, a forest of white triangular cardboard trees were interspersed with white flowers. These arrangements were raffled.
Hall bookings remain healthy and we have interest from new clients in 2015. That will help increase our services to our target groups. Viv coordinated a group of volunteers lead by Joyce and Jennifer to produce a fantastic buffet Christmas Party for the Volunteers and Richard Capstic provided great Guitar music for us.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 19th February when Angie Hyde will demonstrate “Songs from the Wood”. We meet at 2pm for 2.30pm (finish about 4.30pm) at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Seaford. Bring a friend for £2. Visitors welcome. We shall be choosing our charity for next year. Details from Tina Bacon 01323 873162.
We can now look forward to a more coordinated new year with Viv taking the reins of the day to day workings of the trust. She will be working with the Office Volunteers not instead of them and will give a central point of contact for all clients and volunteers. We have been saying for years that the Trust needs a paid administrator and the role has at last been filled. Part of this job is to obtain funding to cover the costs. I am confident that all the volunteers will work with Viv to take the charity forward and expand our services into the community.

Look up! And get more space at home for just £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
80
the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draftproof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Seahaven Lioness Club
After a fairly quiet month in November the Lionesses had a number of activities going on in December. In the first week three Lionesses went to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton to present a cheque for £250 to the Rocking Horse Appeal (see photo), which provides equipment, developmental aids and some home comforts to the sick children being treated there. This was half the proceeds of the Fashion Show a couple of months back and was used to provide gifts and activities for the children who are unable to go home for Christmas. Some of these children are seriously ill or have a range of disabilities, so their gifts have to be carefully chosen. The following week members spent two days in Morrison’s supermarket trying to part shoppers from their money in a Lucky Receipt Draw. For £1 the customer’s name was put into the raffle drum, together with a note of the amount he or she spent. At the end of the Saturday afternoon the Manager came out to draw the lucky name and £50 was paid out in prize money. This still left about £250 profit which is going to Lions International Ebola Orphans Appeal. The next day most Club members were busy again, helping Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions with their old people’s Christmas concert and tea. Some were responsible for laying up teas for the 80 or so guests, while others provided snacks and drinks for performers, drivers and the Lions themselves, who had also put in a long day’s work. During 2014, thanks to the support of the local communities in Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven & Telscombe Cliffs, the Lionesses have been able to give donations to the following good causes, mostly local,

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD The Probus Club of Seaford has moved. After a number of years at the Seven Sisters, the Club has decided to make a move to Seaford Golf Club at Blatchington for its monthly lunch meetings. The club, which is the second oldest Probus club in the UK, meets every second Tuesday in the month. The meetings consist of a 2-course lunch and an after-lunch speaker. The members are retired professional and business men who enjoy the opportunity to meet with their friends an enjoy a lunch together. Our recent speakers have included some of our own members recounting their own life experiences or talking on their specialist subjects, or outside speakers from such organisations as the Soldiers Charity and the Sussex Air Ambulance. There are currently about 50 members and the club welcomes enquiries from new members. Apart from the lunch meeting, we also get together for a coffee morning on the last Friday in the month, where the wives and partners are also made welcome. Our active Social Secretary, David Backhouse organizes many extra events. In recent years we have had visits to such venues as Lancing College, Bentley Priory in Hertfordshire, the Olympic Village and the Amex Stadium. In addition to this, a holiday is arranged for 5 days each year, normally in the autumn. Last year we went to Weston-Super-Mare and we have just returned from a very enjoyable break in Scarborough. Next year’s venue is likely to be Porthcawl in South Wales. If you would like to join us, please phone the President, David Schueler on 01323 890418 or the Speaker Secretary, Derek Budd on 01323 897546. Guests are always welcome and may decide to become a member.

Cast your mind back a moment to the Great Storm of 1987. How sad we were to see so many noble trees brought down, but how delighted to see nature taking advantage of newly exposed light and refreshed soil to bring forth all manner of seedlings come spring. Granted that’s a bit of an extreme example, but early January saw the culmination of much debate and hand wringing, when it was decided that our beloved eucalyptus had to come down (left). It had been growing in front of the wall which borders the telephone exchange building next door to our garden in the Crouch, and over the past couple of years had been shedding boughs. To be on the safe side it had to go, so council contractors duly came in and did the deed, reducing its 30ft-plus majesty to a ground-level stump in about an hour and a half, and then doing a great job for the rest

of the day pruning the horse chestnut near the gate which had developed a bit of a list to port. Anyway, the point of this tale is that the very next day bulbs could be seen pushing their noses through the surface, of the soil. Stephanie couldn’t resist and got straight in there, planting a cornus and a bottlebrush, whose flowers will match the former’s cheerful crimson stems; all of which goes to show that by their very nature gardens continue to evolve. Indeed, the eucalyptus’s demise has triggered ideas for the Mediterranean-planting space in which it lived and Katie has suggested making this area into one of mixed shrubs with something in bloom every week of the year. In a spot that is sheltered from the prevailing winds by the high wall, it will be ideal for tender plants that might have a tough time thriving elsewhere. Just up from the current Mediterranean beds is a prairie garden planted last summer, and more bulbs will be planted here to give lots of spring interest. We are very pleased to welcome the tots from Charlie’s Bears nursery, who are coming into the garden from their base at the Mercread Centre by the football pitch, to see what we do. The two- to five-year-olds attending this new nursery have been given a plot to tend in our garden but will need tools, so if anyone has any suitable forks and/or trowels could they please bring them in one Wednesday morning between 9.30 and 12.30. We were also delighted to welcome some volunteers on a visit from Newhaven Community Garden. It’s aways so good to get the opportunity to meet others who share the same ideals. Some of us will be going to the Seedy Sunday event at Brighton Corn Exchange on 1st February, when, among other activities, seeds can be swapped. We’ll let you know what we get and how they grow. In the meantime, the leeks are doing very well and we’ve got plenty of plants on the sales table too, so do drop in to say hello and have a wander around. The Garden Team Contractors had to fell our much-loved eucalyptus (left). Stephanie plants a cornus near the eucalyptus stump (right).

The Royal British Legion The Royal British Legion is the nation’s custodian of Remembrance. Seaford Branch, like many across the country, is the organiser of Remembrance in the town. Work starts in July with the application for the road closure on Remembrance Sunday. This is soon followed by the invites going to Regimental Associations, Public Services, Societies, Youth Groups, Schools, Clubs, Groups and the many individuals who wish to be a part of the more than forty wreath layers on Remembrance Sunday. 2014 saw nearly one thousand people attend on the day, supporting the “memory” and paying their respects. Remembrance is centred around the two weeks surrounding November 11th, the date the guns fell silent on the Western Front, and the Service of Remembrance is held on the Sunday nearest this date. The wreath laying is always followed by a march to the church of St Leonard, where the very moving Service of Remembrance is held. This year it was officiated by the Rev. Paul Owen, and also the Rev. Father Andrew of St Peters Church in East Blachington. On the Tuesday following Remembrance Sunday a service is held at the local cemetery. This holds one of the largest number of Commonwealth War Graves in this part of the country. With nearly two hundred Canadian military graves, nineteen West Indian and also Irish and British. Organised again by the Seaford Branch of the Royal British Legion, it is attended by the Canadian military, Regimental organisations and Associations representing all the nationalities. This year the Vice-Lord Lieutenant and the High Sherriff attended with members of the Seaford Town Council at both services.

Fundraising for the Royal British Legion’ welfare work goes on throughout the year, mostly visible with the Poppy Appeal leading up to November 11th. The Seaford Branch organises an annual sponsored walk on the last Sunday in September, from Newhaven Fort to Seaford Martello Tower. in 2014 this raised the astonishing figure of over s£6,000. We are also to be seen at events in the town with our fundraising stall, notably, Armed Forces Day. Seaford Branch is grouped with others in the Ouse Valley. Last year it was Seaford’s turn to organise the annual Carol Service, which was much enjoyed by the many who attended. Traditional Carols were sung throughout, chosen by the ladies of the Branch committee. With the church choir and organist giving atmosphere to the occasion, a bitterly cold sea wind was almost forgotten. As with many of these services, the Seaford Royal British Legion Branch Standard was on parade, along with others, and this gives great occasion to the event. In 2014 the Branches across Sussex raised more than 1.1 million pounds. This is only achievable with the organisation and commitment of our members and supporters. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Branch Committee, the Legion Club, and the townspeople of Seaford for their support and generosity. Without you we would fall far short of our target. I wish you all Good Health and Happiness for 2015. Warming Winter Beef Stew
by Julian O’Vegetables
I saw this recipe in a newspaper before Christmas and was intrigued by the disparity of some of the ingredients. Could the eastern flavours of curry powder and fresh ginger marry well with traditional English horseradish and Worcestershire sauce? I just had to give it a go. The result was what Mrs O’Vegetables described as: “The
best beef stew I have ever tasted.” For once, I am giving the precise quantities and method to reproduce a dish so good I doubt that it can be improved upon. Tender, melt-in-the-mouth beef in a riot of flavours – a hot dish for when you are cold. See what you think.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp vegetable oil; 800g braising steak, cut into bite-sized chunks; 10 whole shallots, peeled; 30g plain flour; 2 tsp mild curry powder; 2 tsb light muscovado sugar; a thumbsized knob of fresh ginger, finely grated; 500ml beef stock; 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce; 2 tbsp creamed horseradish; salt and black pepper to season the meat.
Method:

Season the meat well with salt and black pepper, then heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish and brown the meat. Set the meat aside and brown the shallots. Set the shallots aside and remove the dish from the heat. Add the curry powder, ginger, flour and sugar to the juices in the pan. Mix well to form a paste. If the pan is too dry, add a splash of the beef stock. Return the dish to a gentle heat and gradually add the beef stock. Beat any lumps out of the sauce with a whisk. Bring the mixture slowly to a simmer and thicken the sauce. Turn off the heat and when the sauce has stopped bubbling, stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Return the meat and shallots to the dish, cover and put in the oven at 150°c. Go to the pub, then return from the winter chill two hours later. Take the stew from the oven and stir in the creamed horseradish. Serve immediately with chunks of crusty bread or mashed potato to mop up every last drop of the deliciously sweet, spicy sauce. Enjoy!

The Snow Queen The Players’ Collective and Amazing Morgan Productions at Seaford Little Theatre When I was a little girl I delighted in books which featured the sort of family, sprawling with cousins first, second and removed, eccentric aunties, vaguely disturbing uncles and maters and paters so distant they may have been made of cardboard, that put on theatricals from a hotchpotch of props. I was with them when those rascally children rehearsed their plays and performed them to the adults. How simple and unsophisticated those days were… … But I awoke from that nostalgia fest only to be pulled unprotestingly back into a dream where a group of mostly grown-ups in fantastic costumes recreated that charming but chilling Hans Christian Andersen story about Kay who is kidnapped by the ice queen and Gerda who goes in search of him. Now anyone who has seen this fantasy performed on large stages will no doubt have marvelled at various pyrotechnics and complex trickery. This group on the other hand came equipped with some beautiful costumes

– the flower hats were fantastic confections, the Snow Queen was a-shimmer with blindingly white glitter and the raven costumes deserve a cast line of their own – and just a few ingenious moveable and adaptable props. A rectangular box, for example – think a trunk that those mythical children might have found in the attic – did service as a TV that enlarged the characters inside it via the magic mirror that broke to provide the shards of ice that struck poor Kay – come on, keep up, you know the story – and set the fable in motion. This box turned on its side to become a sleigh. All hearts were stolen by Mia Willows as Gerda. Only 14, she showed great acting talent and has a true and freeranging voice. She was partnered by Christyan James as Kay who trained as an actor, and it showed. In fact so professional was this troupe that this production could be staged anywhere given the acting ability of the likes of Steve Frost and Dilly Barlow who were so amusing as a pair of prancing, gesturing and screeching ravens, all sharp elbows and spikiness. Seaford Little Theatre devotees were treated to long-time player there, Sylvia Aston, playing four roles – I particularly liked her Grandmother. As the Snow Queen, the regal Pearl Bates was in equal parts motherly and frightening. Jack Wilkinson worked hard as Snowdrop and Bae the Reindeer and other multiple parts were well taken by Linda Beddow – notably a kindly princess – Jennifer Henley – a lively Robber Girl – and AW King – a terrifying Demon. Tightly but imaginatively directed by Alison Grant, with book and lyrics by William Coyne and music by Karl Mansfield, this Christmas play deserved bigger audiences than it attracted, so come on, Seaford, look out for this troupe. Traditional with a twist, this production was the antithesis of Disney’s Frozen, so don’t Let It Go but come in droves next time this group is in town.
