Feeling good about Seaford Enormous, entirely justifiable Civic Pride was in evidence at “Celebrating Seaford,” an open meeting at the Seaford Little Theatre on the evening of Friday 2nd May. Hosted by Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the audience was made up of invited organisations and members of the public. The Town Mayor, Councillor Mark Brown, was very warmly welcomed, and proved to be both an enthusiastic participant and a very supportive presence throughout. The 40 or so guests were those who have made a significant contribution to the Quality of Life in Seaford, but they can only be a representative sample of the wealth of public spirit Seaford fortunately enjoys. Quality of Life depends upon everyone having enough Health, Wealth and Happiness; and the invitees fell neatly under those headings.
Health
Concerning Seaford’s Community Health, former mayor Ralph Taylor represented ‘Improving Seaford Health’. Dr Mark Barnes (from the Clinical Commissioning Group which includes Seaford) was an attentive member of the audience. Karen Plantrose, a director of Horder Healthcare, outlined some of the facilities her not-forprofit charitable trust might soon bring to Seaford, although the specifics had to wait until Commissioning was complete. Karen also indicated that she and her team were keen to play their part in responding to public demand for even more medical facilities being brought to Seaford in the longer term. Jack Stonehouse spoke movingly about the entirely voluntary work of Seaford Responders, an input which was roundly applauded. Community Support also contributes to health. St James’ Trust provides companionship and much more for the elderly and disabled residents of Seaford’ Roger Daw, from the now 80 years old Macreads, spoke passionately about the work of the youth centre; Ann Jacobs told of how Seahaven Storehouse presently supports nearly 70 Seaford families who find themselves in difficult circumstances. Ann paid tribute in turn to the many, very public spirited people who make regular contributions to the Storehouse.
4
Wealth
A group of business people have maintained an excellent High Street in Seaford despite other towns suffering badly from the recession. Greg Livermore from the Co-op talked about the store’s complete makeover, and the Co-op’s commitment to charitable causes. Badger Inks was complimented for excellent Customer Service. Dairen McGee, co-proprietor of Sussex Eye Care, Toytown and Stitch explained that Toytown had been his attempt to stem the tide of high street decay in order to protect his life’s investment in his ophthalmic business. Merchandising decisions at Toytown are literally in the hands of his children, their ‘thumbs-up’ meaning ‘Stock it, Dad!’ Those who educate and inform us are in turn, crucial to wealth creation. Seaford’s University of the Third Age, represented by John Jeffries, attracts a huge following. Tributes were paid to ‘Haven News’, the web based information exchange, and Seahaven FM, our local radio station. Mick Barrett was there to hear appreciation of our excellent Museum, as was Melanie Nicholls from Seaford’s newly built Library. Sarah Speadie, deputy head of Seaford Head School, sketched out plans for the new 6th form she will lead, amusingly blaming a short hitch on Archaeology; thousands of newly discovered rare fossils are the culprits!
Happiness
The largest group were those who volunteer to entertain Seaford through the Arts in its many forms. Seaford Musical Theatre told of its work with young folk; the Crypt Gallery enticed us with offers no one could refuse; and Jean McCapra from Seaford Music Society Photo: Runners up Seahaven Storehouse: Ann Jacobs holds the Certificate, with Cllr Mark Brown, Town Mayor, and host Lloyd Russell-Moyle.

was so eloquent that she signed up two new members on the spot! Seaford Choral Society was praised not just for its beautiful music making, but for the money it has raised for many of the Charities present. On the Environment, Tree Warden Keith Blackburn brought the excellent news that the scheme was back in business; praise was heaped upon both ‘Friends of Tide Mills’ represented by Jim Skinner, and upon the Community Gardens. The floral theme of Seaford Railway station, (due to celebrate its 150th birthday this year) was notably enjoyed by many.
Poll
Those attending could choose to take part in a Poll to find who they thought had made the most significant impact on Seaford’s Quality of Life. The Runner Up was announced first, and the Mayor was heard to exclaim “Very good! That’s one of my Charities!” It was Seahaven Storehouse. Ann Jacobs and colleagues were presented with a framed Certificate. But nobody from the winning organisation was to be found! The Seaford Responders had departed on their second “shout” during the meeting. The Town Mayor declared that the evening had been “a splendid Community Event”, and announced he would be pleased to present the Winners Certificate to Seaford Responders before the next Council Meeting, an offer host Lloyd Russell-Moyle was delighted to accept.
Questions
Sarah Speadie, Karen Plantrose, Roger Daw and Dairen McGee formed a Panel to respond the Quality of Life questions and comments about Seaford from the audience. Points raised included better signposting, a timetable for improving health facilities, and employment opportunities for Seaford school-leavers. When the Host called for one last question, everyone was stunned by the simplicity yet enormity of that question: “What is the biggest issue for Seaford today?” There came answers of course, but a debate could easily have followed requiring another full evening. If readers would also like to put their point of view, why not do so through the pages of this journal? Alternatively, write direct to Lloyd RussellMoyle, 3 North Street, Lewes BN7 3PA. Lloyd promises an answer for everyone who writes to him. This free, non-political event was sponsored entirely by Seaford Labour Party, which has recently adopted Lloyd Russell-Moyle as its Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.

THE MAYOR’S OPEN GARDEN TRAIL 2014, SUNDAY 22ND JUNE The newly elected Mayor of Seaford, Cllr. Mark Brown would like to invite you all to the 3rd annual trail of nine gardens will take place this month! He tells us that the trail organiser, Geoff Stonebanks, has somehow managed to get another three brand new gardens, never having opened to the public before, to join this year’s event! Lee Highley’s lovely garden at 39 Marine Drive (left), along with Barbara & Gerald Mine’s plot at 47 Marine Drive, both in Bishopstone, will reveal their breathtaking views over Newhaven Harbour and Tide Mills, while Clare Mayers’s colourful garden at 36 Kedale Road (below) will be making up the new trio! There will be a few old favourites, including Geoff ’s own award-winning garden, Driftwood, at 4 Marine Drive, which has just been named by Sussex Life Magazine as one of the 25 must see gorgeous gardens in Sussex this summer and featured in a national gardening magazine last month! Other old hands of the trail are Carol & Ernie Arnold’s delightful garden, Cosy Cottage, at 69 Firle Road, and Helen & Dave Roberts’ fun filled garden, Windover, in Chyngton Lane North. The recently newly named Seaford Community Garden opens up for the trail again, as does Sheila and Dave Thomas’s garden, 14 Lullington Close, nestling at the bottom of Seaford Head. Garden number nine is new to the trail thanks to Chris Kilsby agreeing to open the garden gates at Burford, in Cuckmere Road. So the scene is set for an interesting trail of nine uniquely individual gardens opening in aid of the Mayor’s charities for 2014. The two charities that the Mayor has chosen for his Mayoral year are, Waves, a charity which supports families in Seaford who are encountering difficulties within their lives, and Seahaven Storehouse
6
which provides basic food items to individuals and families in need within the Seahaven area. Sincere thanks must go, for the 3rd year running, to Steve and Sava from Pomegranate, without whom the event would not take place. Their generous sponsorship of the event is greatly appreciated! There will be a grand raffle again, with 1st prize of a gardening voucher for £100. Entry to all nine gardens will be through a £5 ticket which can be purchased at the first garden visited and where maps can also be collected. Full details including trail map, individual garden location maps and other information on the trail can be found at www. mayorsopengarden.co.uk The Tourist Information Office will also have trail maps available from 16th June. Other enquiries to Geoff at 01323 899296.

60th birthday for Seaford Art Club Seaford Art Club is long-established and celebrates its 60th anniversary at the end of June with its birthday show at the Crypt Gallery daily from June 28th to July 3rd. This year, apart from just paintings on the wall, there will be gift cards for sale, and also some free drawing activities for those who love to draw and those who say they can’t. The Seaford Art Club was first founded in 1954 by the late Peggy Matheson and her father, together with their friends Betty Smith and Peggy Oaken – all, sadly, no longer with us. The oldest surviving member is 90 year-old Nina Matheson who joined the club in the early 1960s.
Indeed, the same ethos continues today as almost all of the members have had some kind of tuition before they joined. Some of our current members have taught art professionally or, in a few cases, retired from professional careers as illustrators, graphic artists or designers. In the past such high standards may have discouraged potential new members, but today, joining is a far less formal affair. In more recent years a change of venue followed and economic conditions sadly saw a dramatic reduction in membership, but in the past few years, thanks to the chairmanship of Janice Dennington, treasurer Marion Freelove and committee members, the club is once again thriving with well attended weekly meetings at the Downs Leisure Centre. “Seaford is a very friendly and social art club,” affirms the club’s current chairman Jeremy Sales. “The age range of our membership spans several decades and encompasses huge talent and experience. It’s not a competitive environment, but a high standard does encourage less experienced members to develop their skills while having fun. Yet, as art is the common interest, everyone gets on. “While we don’t offer tuition, members inevitably swap new ideas and try new techniques. Moreover, a varied programme provides opportunities to draw or paint new subjects in many different styles. There are coffee mornings too, trips to outdoor locations (in summer) with day excursions to major galleries to spur inspiration and members partners are involved where possible. It’s a club, first and foremost, with art the common interest at its heart.”

OPEN SECRET...
There is no mystery about hands-on healing offered by FSHG. Spiritual healing or energy healing is a means of transferring healing energy through the healer to another person. The healer is trained to become a channel for the inflow of universal or Divine energy to the patient. This energy is available to everyone, all the time, and can be channelled to relieve suffering and distress, to restore balance to the body, mind and spirit, and bring the patient to their own state of calmness and wellbeing. Spiritual healing is not Spiritualism, which is a psychic state. Hands-on spiritual healing is safe, effective and non-intrusive. It is calming and relaxing and can ease pain and discomfort. It will reduce stress and help you to cope with life’s problems. It will reinforce the immune system, and aid healthy living and self-responsibility. Experience spiritual healing for yourself. Come to the FSHG Free Open Healing Clinic on the first Saturday of each month between 2pm and 4pm at St James’ Trust, 11 Blacthington Road, Seaford. FSHG is the Foundation of Spiritual Healing and Guidance, a registered charity, founded in 1976. It is a non-denominational and non-sectarian organisation, and all are welcome to participate in its activities. FSHG is committed to public service through the teaching and practice of Spiritual Healing and Complimentary Medicine, maintaining the highest standards of integrity, compassion and understanding. Bringing people together in love and unity, helping them to discover who they are and what they want from life.

Running Commentary... The number of people taking up running as a pastime has been rising significantly in recent years, so I believe that it is worth looking at the unofficial Code of Conduct that most runners abide by. It has been evolving since the running boom of the 1980s and comprises a mixture of wisdom and common sense. All I’ve done here is to add a dash or two of humour to a selection of the main points. 1. Respect runners who overtake you in the final stages of a race. They must be good to beat you! 2. Clean your trainers once a week (OK, I was only joking) 3. Don’t spit into the wind, and if you have to spit at all, check first that no one is in the firing line. No runner likes to be on the receiving end of such thoughtlessness. 4. When finishing a race, try to look your best and finish strongly, put on a brave face and don’t let anyone know how exhausted or injured you really are. Save that for the post-race discussions with other runners, who are generally sympathetic. 5. When you’re bunched together at the start line of a race don’t tie runners’ laces together. 6. In family fun runs, young runners, should not overtake whoever it was who gave them a lift to the race. It’s disrespectful, and anyway, they might not get a lift home. 7. While out running, don’t respond to verbals from morons who think they’re making clever comments. 8. Always LBWBYCTR (look both ways before you cross the road), especially if you’re plugged into your personal stereo and can’t hear the traffic. 9. Clothing… nothing too revealing. Comfort comes ahead of image… up to a point. Tea cosies worn to keep the head warm are taboo. Odd, old or even dirty trainers are OK, as are bright orange ones but offensive T-shirts aren’t. 10. If you lack common sense, don’t run on your own. 11. If you lack a sense of direction, wear a bumbag containing enough money to catch a bus home or wear a hi-viz cap with the word HELP on the top. 12. When out running, always slow down or walk if you find yourself approaching anyone on horseback. 13. Encourage/help runners who are new to our sport. Share your wisdom. 14. Observe the Countryside Code at all times. 15. Show respect and patience towards other users of pavements and pathways. 16. If you come across a distressed runner in a race or just out training, stop, check if he/she needs
22
help. If necessary, stay and assist. 17. When approaching a water station in a race, don’t suddenly cut across runners to reach the cups of water, and don’t discard the cups recklessly. 18. Don’t go straight home after finishing a race. Stay on and cheer in other runners, just as you were cheered in. 19. Most runners are fairly light-footed so when running in the dark try not to cause alarm or panic by ‘suddenly’ running past someone. Cross to the other side of the road if necessary or ‘cough’ to give an early warning that you are there. 20. Polite greetings – When out running, acknowledge other runners, also walkers, horse/ riders, cyclists, and dog-walkers, with a slight nod of the head, wave of the hand, a smile, a welcoming, “Morning,” a handshake or perhaps a quick embrace, depending upon how well you know the person. These are not rules, but just the oil that makes our sport run smoothly. They are probably also one of the reasons why running is increasing in popularity. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

SEAFORD TOWN FORUM The Seaford Town Forum was held at Seaford Baptist Church on the 29th April 2014. The local councillors were asked to come along so that the residents of Seaford could have their say and give their opinions on matters affecting Seaford town.
Hair Design 01323 – 893370 14 Dane Road, Seaford, BN25 1LL
Holding the Town Forum at the church enabled the council to accommodate a larger audience for the presentations and Mayors’ Awards. It also enabled organisations who received grants to provide a small display and promote their activities over the last year.

Mayor Mark Brown opened the evening by welcoming everyone who had made an effort to attend. Presentations were given by elected members of the organisations who received large grants in 2013: Seaford Lifeguards, Seaford Bonfire Society, Seaford & Newlands Amateur Boxing Club, Seaford Community Partnership and Seaford Citizens Advice Bureau. Presentations were then given from the Mayors chosen charities for 2014, WAVES and Seahaven Storehouse, and the two charities that were chosen by last year’s Mayor Councillor Anthony White, who gave us some information and background knowledge on what they do behind the scenes of Seaford and the surrounding area. The Mayor’s awards were given to Jill Allen, Nicky Auster, Ben King, Andy Lock, Vicky Martin, Sgt Stuart Mullins, Gerri Ori and Lesley Wetlesen for all the work they have done for Seaford Town. A new award created by the Mayor of Seaford, named The Don Mabey Annual Award after the late Mr Don Mabey MBE, who was an asset to Seaford and is dearly missed, was presented to Dave Argent. The Don Mabey Award is given to selected residents of the Seaford community for outstanding services to the town of Seaford.

Advance Notice of Annual General Meeting of the Seaford Senior’s Forum Monday June 9th at 2pm at St Thomas More Church Hall, Highlands Road, Seaford Following the business part of the meeting there will be a presentation by William Thomas from the Horder Centre. William will provide an update on the facilities and services that will be made available from the Seaford Horder Centre which will soon be opening. All are also welcome to come and find out more about the Seaford Senior’s Forum, which has 1300 members. There is limited parking at the hall but East Street public car park is nearby, also number 12 bus stops nearby on the Eastbourne Road. Light refreshments will be available. New committee members are urgently needed to join the committee. The committee can really make a difference by being involved at the early stages of consultations on a wide range of national and local issues, and by meeting major decision makers, for example ESCC Adult Social Care and Transport and Environment departments and local NHS agencies. We aim to work closely with other local groups involved in services to older people in Seaford. We have representation from Seaford Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce and Seaford Community Partnership on the committee and would welcome representatives from similar organisations. We communicate to our members by newsletter and public meetings. We would like to increase both of these activities but need a very active committee. New members will be made most welcome.

The Society of OneArmed Golfers was founded in 1932. Initially it was principally for golfers who had lost an arm during World War 1, but over the years it has evolved and now includes golfers who have lost the use of an arm through conflict, road or industrial accidents, birth defects or neurological reasons.
The objective of the Society is to provide a level playing field for such golfers and the criteria is that every shot must be played using one arm and without the use of prosthetics or other aids.
The best one-armers play to a 5 handicap, which just goes to prove that losing the use of an arm does not prevent the participation in a game such as golf. Over 40 players from around the world will be taking part in the main knock-out Championship and participating in other competitions throughout the week as well as taking on the members at Seaford Golf Club in matches. All this culminates in a Gala Dinner on Friday 13th June. Another important part of the week will be that an attempt will be made on the Guinness One-Arm Golf Carry record. That is the exact point of impact of a ball, measured in a straight line, driven from a nominated tee. This currently stands at 257 metres, held by a twoarmed Swedish golf pro. The Society is confident one of their low handicap players can beat this and they will have a proper onearmer holding the record! All spectators are welcome throughout the week and in particular for the Guinness Book of Records attempt, which will take place at 5pm on Monday 9th June.

Hello Child Arrangements Orders: goodbye to child residence and child custody As of April this year, legislation has been introduced providing for a number of changes which seek to ‘modernise’ family law. The new changes are being introduced by the Children and Families Act 2014. So, what will this

ST GEORGE’S DAY WAS A TRIUMPH
Members and friends of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George held their annual Church Service at St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston on St George’s Day, 23rd April. It started at 6pm with a peal by the Church Bells in honour of the day, at the same time many other bells were rung throughout England, including those of St Leonard’s Church in Seaford. Mr Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex was able to meet the Alfriston ringers and congratulate them on their excellent performance. Following the Service, guests crossed the Tye to Deans Place Hotel for the formal St George’s Day dinner. Amongst the guests, as well as the Lord Lieutenant and Mrs Field, were Mr Chris Gebbie, High Sheriff, the Mayors of Seaford, Telscombe and Lewes, the Deputy Mayor of Newhaven and the Vice Chair of

Lewes District Council. The dinner started off with the traditional ceremony of the beef when the Deans Place Chef, Stewart Dunely presented the roast to the Chairman for his approval – the Chef ’s reward was a tankard of English Ale. Toastmaster David Blight ensured that the evening ran smoothly. A highlight of the evening was the presentation by Laurie Holland, the President of the Branch, of a new printer to Ann Blight from the Starfish Project that she runs in East Sussex to help recovering stammerers. This is a worthwhile project that the branch has been privileged to help in the past with various necessary items. In his speech to welcome the guests, Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, reported on the activities of the branch. One of these was the purchase of a special trophy bought through the donations received at the funeral of the late Don Mabey MBE, the branch’s first President, which will be presented annually to the best cadet in the local Wing of the Air Training Corps. The trophy was on display. Each lady present during the evening received an English Red Rose in honour of the day. These were given by branch member Colonel Keith Barker and supplied by Bishopstone Nurseries of Seaford. In his response on behalf of the guests, the Lord Lieutenant praised the work of the branch in the community and highlighted the work the branch does to encourage the proper celebration of England’s National Day, St George’s Day. He also praised the Branch’s cooperation with Seaford Town Council in respect of the organisation of the annual Veterans and Armed Forces Day – this year on Saturday 28th June. The Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field and Laurie Holland, the President of the Seahaven branch The Royal Society of St George, with the St Andrew’s bell ringers.
St George’s Day Dinners are the scene for the Ceremony of the Beef. Deans Place Hotel Chef Steward Dunkley allowed Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, to sample the beef.

Free space available for local Groups and charities!
The Clinton Centre Country-Style Market, held every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm, has been running for a couple of months now and is doing very well. It is for local customers and sellers alike with everything from local crafts to food stalls. There are even crochet lessons with the lovely Frankie! The Clinton Centre café is also open from 11.30am every Tuesday, serving soup, hot lunches, puddings and cakes – two courses and a drink for less than £5! In the café’s large seating area there is FREE space available for use by local groups or charities that would like to promote what they do – maybe a drama group advertising their play, or the local scouts for advertising new members or perhaps a fundraising event? The use for it is endless and it’s FREE! All that’s required in return is that the organisation promotes or advertises that they will be there in the Clinton Centre, so both the market and the organisation will benefit on the day. In May, the Sussex Wildlife Trust used the space and this month in June, Seaford Library will be there with information regarding the new library – I know they are looking for volunteers. The local Mencap charity from Newhaven are present on a regular basis and also hold a tombola in the market. If you are interested in promoting your club, charity or organisation at the Clinton Market, please contact Wendy, the market organiser on 07883 611677 or email: sussexmarkets@live.co.uk, or just post a ‘like’ on Facebook – Sussex Markets. Better still, pop in and speak to Wendy at the market where you will see what it’s all about. Wendy Veck, Market Organiser

Rotary Club of Seaford RYLA
In April, Ken and Kay Holt, together with David Argent, went to High Ashurst Outdoor Learning Centre at Box Hill, Dorking, to attend the Rotary Youth Leader Awards (RYLA) which are held annually. The Rotary Club of Seaford had sponsored Florence Hardy, Ella Edwards and Marianne Best to take part in the event, which took place over 5 residential days. Fifty-six youngsters were divided into six groups, each with adult team leaders, and were tasked to undertake a variety of challenges which included a 9-mile hike (turned into 12/13 miles when they got lost), 50 feet wall climb, high rope work, crossing rivers sometimes blindfolded, and many other testing activities. Each group was required to work out how best to complete its assignments safely and successfully. The course is designed to bring out leadership qualities in the young people. The Rotary visitors felt strongly that this aim was being met, and the participants had enjoyed themselves along with the hard work. We look forward to meeting the girls we sponsored again to present them with their certificates and to find out more about their week. Photo: left to right Florence, Marianne and Ella visiting the Rotary Club of Seaford before their adventure.
Rotary Concert
Local charities will benefit to the tune of around £1,000 from the proceeds of a Musical Concert organised by Seaford Rotary Club, which was held at Seaford Head School. Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir, under the musical direction of Iris Warren, and Seaford Primary School Chamber Choir (photo above, right), under the musical direction of Kate Steer entertained a packed audience with a mixture of traditional, modern and folk songs. An entertaining part of the evening was the audience participation in the ‘Hand Jive’ number, each side competing in good spirits.
40
A delightful interlude from the choirs was the Violinist Bethany Geoghegan, winner of the Seaford Rotary Young Musicians of the Year Competition, who performed the First and Second Movement of Veracine Sonata. The evening conclude with both choirs singing ‘All Through the Night’ and ‘Soualle’ conducted by Iris Warren. It was very pleasing to see the younger generation and the adults all joining together in song to such an appreciative audience.
Don Mabey Award
Many of our readers will have known Don Mabey MBE, an Honorary Freeman of Seaford Town who died in December 2013. Current Mayor, Councillor Mark Brown, has produced an award in Don’s name, for services to Seaford. The very first winner of that award was honoured on Tuesday 29th April at the Seaford Town Council Meeting, to which Rotarians Keith Blackburn and Mike Roper were invited. The recipient was another of our own Rotarians, Dave Argent. Dave was very proud to receive this award in the presence of his wife Marian and youngest son Richard. Photo: Dave Argent
Boot, Craft & Produce Fair
Our first fair of 2014 was not well attended, as the weather forecast of heavy rain put off many stall holders. We actually had a few stall holders turn up at the gate and turn back despite our efforts to persuade them in. However, the rain did not arrive and the 10 or so stall holders did a good trade with the members of public who did turn up. The bacon butties and hot drinks from our catering van were most welcomed by Rotarians, stall holders and the public alike. We ended the day with a reasonable profit of over £170 for charities and good causes. Our next fair is on Sunday 18th May and

let’s hope for better weather. Please come along and support our cause, sell those unwanted items or perhaps make that special purchase.
Re-Wired Project
At a recent Rotary Club of Seaford meeting guest speaker Chris Chester explained the work of the Re-Wired Project.
Clock Restoration Service
Re-Wired is a UK-based organisation committed to sourcing and installing computers into African schools. Imagine learning at school in front of an old blackboard with few other resources. This is real life for many African children. Imagine a child in the UK going all the way through school without using a computer. The main purpose of Re-Wired is to help the educational facilities in Africa, giving children there computing skills, plus a whole new resource to use for all their other subjects thanks to the extra software that is also installed. The majority of the computers are sourced through partner Computers4Africa. They refurbish computer equipment donated by UK companies and provide fully working computer systems ready to be shipped to Africa. The vision of Re-Wired is that all African children would have computers in their schools, giving them the same type of resources to learn with that we use in UK schools today, promoting the development of skills to make them employable when they leave school. For several years we have hosted, in partnership with Seaford Head school, an Inclusion Group for young people who have experienced difficulties within the formal school context. It has been a joy to see the progress made by many of the group over the years, and with the partnership coming to an end, we would like to highlight the success story this year of Harry Ward. As part of his Arts Award Harry has specialised in pyrography (burning pictures and designs into wood) and has taught adults the tricks of the trade. Such is the quality of his work that he recently exhibited at the Crypt and managed to sell some of his pieces, very generously donating some of the profits to Mercread. Watch out for his work in other exhibitions, and watch out too for Conor’s photography. Both of these young men have made great strides forward not least because of skilled and dedicated teaching (thanks Michelle and Iain). A second reason for celebration has been the reemergence of a very active Seaford Youth Forum and, in July, they will be hosting a conference for other Youth Forums at Mercread. Good to see them being so positive and pro-active. On a less positive note we are still desperate to let our large Blue Hall on a regular basis. In the past it has hosted a playgroup and is self contained with its own kitchen area and good storage – suitable for playgroup, mums and toddlers, or indeed any group activity. If you would like to see it please contact me, Roger, on 01323 894947, or Helen, who organises our lettings on 07761 771559. We are a charity manned by volunteers and the income from this room would enable us to offer a new range of activities for all of Seaford’s young people. Also if you have any brilliant fund-raising ideas we would love to hear from you!

Seahaven Lioness Club A lot of the Club’s activities of late have been in the western part of our Seahaven area, although by the time this issue comes out we hope that our Saturday stalls in Broad Street will be in full swing, with our traditional plant stall on May 24th, Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Elsewhere we have been holding monthly coffee mornings at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven, which provide a modest but steady income, and on 13th April we were allocated a slot to run a Car Boot Sale at the Dell, also in Peacehaven. It was the first one of the regular Car Boots held there throughout the summer season and organised by various charities. It was also a very pleasant day and these two factors combined to produce a successful event.

At the end of March a cheque was presented to Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs Scout Group towards their new minibus. On Thursday 1st May a group of Lionesses from Seahaven Lioness Club and a group of Lions from NP&S Lions Club met at the Martello Tower to greet fellow Lions who were undertaking a gruelling charity cycle ride along the South coast. Lioness Susan Saunders and Lion Maurice Allen from Adur East Club in Shoreham were driven to Cornwall the previous week by Seahaven Lioness Sue Jenkins, who also picked them up from Dover at the end of their trip. They arrived in Seaford bang on time, where they were presented with cheques by both Lions and Lionesses. They were then entertained to lunch by the Lionesses. Susan and Maurice are raising money for LIBRA (www. libralionscharity.org), a Lions International sponsored medical research facility based in London, which is doing great work seeking causes and treatments for a variety of blood disorders, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. They were supported throughout their trip by members of various Lions Clubs, who provided hospitality, refreshment and moral support, as well as donations to the cause. In August the Lionesses are organising a tea party at Seaford Golf Club in aid of LIBRA – watch this space for further details.

Inner Wheel of Seaford On 24th April The Inner Wheel Club of Seaford marked its 66th Anniversary by arranging a celebratory Tea at Blatchington Golf Club. President Jean Vine’s guests were the Presidents of Seaford Martello, Janice Vince, and Seaford Rotary Clubs, Michael Logan, together with the Chairman of Inner Wheel District 25, Françoise Cutts, plus visitors from other Inner Wheel Clubs. The high point of the afternoon was an inspirational talk by Seaford Rotary VicePresident, Ray Hazan. Ray was an Army Officer with the Royal Anglian Regiment, and whilst on a tour of duty in Northern Ireland he was injured by a bomb. He had to be invalided out of his regiment due to the loss of his sight. However, from then on he used his expertise by working with Blind Veterans UK (formerly St Dunstans). Ray made his audience aware of his pragmatic attitude to sightlessness which is an encouragement to others. The audience was surprised to discover that Blind Veterans UK is totally financed by public subscription, and they enthusiastically contributed to a raffle, raising a total of £223. Earlier in the month a quarter of the Club’s membership attended the National Conference and AGM in Telford. They joined over 2,000 of the nation’s members in a few days of fellowship. Jan Leeming and Monty Don were the keynote speakers. Photo: Jean with Francoise Cutts, cutting the birthday cake.

We are also having a trip out to the Bluebell Railway combined with a visit to Heaven Farm. I personally have never been to the farm, so I am looking forward to the trip out. When all these events have taken place there will be lots to tell you. No doubt we are all looking forward to a good, sunny summer. At the moment the end of April is really showing the British countryside at its best. When Britain does it, it does it well!
Hi everyone, Seaford Kurlers are enjoying their weekly game of New Age Kurling at the Downs Leisure Centre with renewed vigor as we have gained new members. Always good for us and for them. We get to meet others who are in turn curious and then keen to join. As I am writing this before any of the May events have happened, there is not a lot to update on, however we have the Seahaven Lionesses’ Tournament and the Seaford Kurlers’ inhouse tournament to run and finish.

If you are looking forward to meeting new friends in a good social environment, then give us a visit. The Leisure Centre is well equipped and friendly. The restaurant is great with quite a few home made treats on offer. So, any Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm you will find us playing our game. Annual fees are £5 with weekly subs of £2.50. We are a club affiliated to ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association). Some of our members are disabled but this in no way prevents them from taking full part in all that we do. We do in fact referee the Wave Leisure Paragames Day every year. Hope to see you sometime.

MAD – Meeching Amateur Dramatics Something a little bit different from MAD (Meeching Amateur Dramatics) this time round. Director Garry Fowler has found a brilliant comedy, which probably few have heard of, by an amazing writer not that well known, then put together a great cast and you are invited to come and see the result. ‘Old Boilers’ by Adrian Cale, runs for three nights, 5th, 6th and 7th June at Meeching Hall, Fort Road, Newhaven. Tickets £8 from Meeching Estate Agents, High Street, Newhaven Tel 01273 515566 or 07912 965507. Do not miss this comedy based around the comings and goings of a Blackpool Guest House, including four women of a certain age letting ‘their hair down’ celebrating divorce in style. But this is only the start of a string of interesting dysfunctional characters thrown together under one roof in this riotous farce.

The Rude Mechanical Theatre brings ‘The Wife’ to Seaford What do women really want? Well there’s a question! Is there one man who has not asked it? Well, The Rude Mechanical Theatre Co will be coming to The Crouch Gardens in Seaford on Saturday 14th June with a play that asks that very question. It’s called ‘The Wife’ and it is based on Chaucer’s ‘Wife of Bath’. Alyson, a wife from Bath, of course, is travelling to Canterbury on a pilgrimage and describes with hilarious outcomes the five men who have shared her marriage bed. Then she tells the story of a young knight called Roland who having ravished a young maiden is forced, in order to avoid being put to death for his crime, to undergo a test and search the world for an answer to the question: What is it that women most desire? With his stupid but rather innocent servant Dogrose, he encounters a series of marriage relationships and asks each of the women the question. It seems none of them agree – until finally he encounters an old crone and she tells him the true answer, but only on condition he will do anything she asks of him. The play comes dramatically to a conclusion as the answers are revealed. Hilarious, but also deeply poetic, the play digs deeply into the nature of love and human relationships. When the play was first performed by The Rudes in 2003 it was included by The Times in their top three outdoor plays of that year and in the top hundred outdoor events of any kind. Not to be missed! The play will take place on the walled garden site in the Crouch Gardens, East Street and starts at 7.30pm. Bring warm clothing, chairs and a picnic from 7pm. Tickets cost £13, with a range of concessions and an excellent group rate ticket of £110 for ten people, and are available from the company’s website – www.therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk, or by ringing 01323 501260, or locally from Newberry Tully Estate Agents in Church Street, Seaford.

BUY-To-lets Following this year’s budget announcement regarding the changes to pension rights, this could lead more pensioners into the buy-to-let market in search of an alternative income to traditional pension annuities/options or savings; to ensure them and their family’s future financial security Buy-to-let property has proved popular in recent years due to low interest rates and stock market volatility. Like any investment, consider your attitude to risk; buy-to- let comes with no guarantees, but if you have faith in bricks and mortar as opposed to stocks and shares this could be the way forward. Since the Bank of England’s announcement that interest rates will stay at the current low of 0.5% until late 2015. Optimism around the UK’s financial recovery, coupled with the Bank of England’s announcement makes good reading for anyone considering a buy-to-let investment. This is evidenced by the significant number of landlords looking to add property to their portfolios. Interest rates will eventually rise and this could stretch the budgets for some Landlords. Anyone thinking about a buy-to-let investment should remember this is a mid to long term investment. Consider your ‘investment horizon’, ie the period
equity – the very best buy-to-let deals can be available to those with around 40% deposit/60% loan to value (LTV).
Top tips for buy-to-let: 1. Research the market – consult with other property investors/Landlords. Consider the mortgage and set up costs involved over your intended investment period. Speak with an independent financial adviser who can assist with your requirements. Confer with local letting agents regarding the demand for buy to let properties.
2. Location, location, location – the right property in the right place at the right price. Research the local area thoroughly including local demographics, amenities and the rental rates for a comparable property as well as good transport links.
3. Do the sums – Lenders typically require rent to cover 125% of the mortgage repayments and will require a minimum 25% deposits. The best buy-to-let mortgages can also come with a substantial arrangement fee.
4. Get the right mortgage – if you are not investing with cash, having the right mortgage is key, this is particularly true if you are approaching or past retirement age. Consider using an independent financial adviser who can shop around for the best deal for you.
5. Consider your tenants – gone are the days when it was just students and young people renting property. These days all generations rent.

6 Clinton Place, Seaford BN25 1NL 6. Don’t be over ambitious – Rent should be the key return for buy-to-let. Most buy-to-let mortgages are done on an interest only basis, so the amount borrowed will not be paid off over time. If you can get a rental return substantially more than your mortgage payments, you will be able to build up a good emergency fund, or saving/ investing any extra cash. Bear in mind a home does come with running costs and these could eat into your return.
7. Consider the purchase price – as a buyto-let investor, you have the same advantages as a first time buyer when it comes to negotiating on price. If you are not reliant on selling a property to buy another and you are not part of a chain, you represent less of a risk of a sale falling through. This can be a major advantage when negotiating on price.
from your first property or it will be much more difficult to expand your portfolio in the future.
To ensure your first buy-to-let investment is a success: 1. Know what property prices have grown at over the last 10-20 years naturally in the area where you are planning to invest. 2. Always make sure you buy a property you can instantly add value to, ideally at a 10% discount or adding 10% value through renovation or additional rooms. 3. When you have found a property, check what it was worth in 2009 when they were at their lowest, via property price websites, this will help to work out what the property value may fall to if we have another credit crunch. 4. Check out what properties are renting for. The rental price advertised is not necessarily the

Easter Raffle
Over the Easter period we organised a raffle in local pubs and at Sainsbury’s in Newhaven. This involved the public buying a numbered square – if the square was the pre-selected number then you won a large Easter Egg. This raised £1,200, which we will use to buy four lockable bedside cabinets for the new St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Many thanks to Sainsbury’s and Paradise Park for allowing us to sell there and to the following pubs for their support: Flying Fish, Bells Club, Cuckmere Inn, Plough and Harrow, Ye Olde Smugglers Inne, The Hope Inn, and White Lion Hotel.
LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal)
Like the Lionesses we were at the Martello Tower last Thursday 1st May 2014, to present a cheque of £250 to the cyclists. These cyclists were two members of the Adur East Lions Club who were cycling from Land’s End to Dover along the South Coast to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. See the Lioness report on page 47 for more information.

East Blatchington WHAT’S ON AT THE HOP? Lectures ANCESTRAL VOICES
One of the more eccentric of English artists is the subject of the next East Blatchington Lecture, on Tuesday, June 3rd.
Sir Stanley Spencer became wellknown for his paintings depicting Biblical scenes occurring as if in Cookham, Berkshire, the small village beside the Thames where he was born and spent most of his life. He saw it as an earthly paradise, and depicted fellow villagers as their Gospel counterparts. He found fame and success as a man whose works were markedly different, a painter with an extraordinary visual imagination. Spencer was also an official war artist, and served in the first world war as a medical orderly and an infantryman. An exhibition, “Stanley Spencer in the Aftermath of the First World War,” is currently at his gallery in Cookham High Street, and continues until November 2nd. But Seaford is about to enjoy its own showing of some of his work. It is quite a story which Kay Blackburn will be telling in this illustrated lecture. As usual, it is open to everyone, and is at St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road, Seaford, at 2.30pm.
Tickets are £5, including refreshments, available on the door, or from Newberry Tully estate agents. Other lectures to come in this popular series: July 1st: Karen McCreedy gives an illustrated talk entitled “Reel to Real Heroes – Actors at War”. August 5: Simon Brett, the author whose 80 books include the popular comedy detective tales and Radio 4 series featuring the usually struggling actor Charles Paris. Painting : Stanley Spencer 1959

Each sigil has its meaning, each colour its power. This is the language of artists and throughout time we link with them in the potent images from the past. After many years living and working in France, Caroline brings her latest collection of work together in her first solo exhibition since her return to the UK.
ELSEWHERE AND OTHERWISE Peter Messer Saturday 14th to Thursday 26th June. Open: Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am – 5pm, Sunday 12noon – 4pm, Closed Monday.
New paintings – Peter’s intense egg tempera paintings are well known and widely collected. Frequently, although not always, set in, around or parallel with his home town of Lewes, the implied narratives and tensions create an idiosyncratic world that unsettles and sometimes amuses. His paintings are filled with oddly arrested moments in time as well as place, pinned down within a luminously deadpan tempera technique. Peter has work in private collections in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Sweden and the USA as well as the UK. In 2007 he published On The Way To Work. The Lewes paintings of Peter Messer. ‘Walk & Talk’ the exhibition with Peter Messer on Sunday 22nd June, 2pm.

If so, please send a photograph of them to editor@seafordtimes.com and have them added to the ‘Comrades of The Great War’ database. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Great War (1914 – 1918). To commemorate the centenary Seaford Times is displaying the photograph of the Seaford Branch of the ‘Comrades of the Great War’ on it’s website. This photograph has over 100 Seaford men who came back home after the hostilities ceased. Below is a section taken from an historic photograph and is of great importance to the history of our town. It is for that reason that we want to have as many of these brave Seaford men named as possible. All the men are numbered to make it easier for you to name anyone you know. A larger version of the whole of the photo can be viewed at www.seafordtimes.com/1918 This is a huge project, and will take a very long time to complete, if in deed it ever does get completed. These Seaford men should all be remembered, and we should all know who they are.

SEAFORD HEAD NATURE RESERVE Where coastal zones were ‘squashed’ between sea defences and land-based developments, many habitats such as saltmarsh have become increasingly rare, both nationally and internationally. The Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park have around 10% of the total saltmarsh area in East Sussex.
In the future as sea levels rise, we may have to allow the sea to gradually flood the lower river valley, recreating more rare habitats like saltmarsh, which is a natural flood defence. Storms now regularly cause severe damage to Cuckmere Haven sea defences (shingle bank, groynes and beach). To date this has been repaired but it may not be sustainable on a long-term basis. ‘Management Retreat’ may be necessary. The Nature Reserve is now included in the South Downs National Park. The Reserve is wardened by a Ranger on behalf of the SHNR Committee. If you would like to help care for the Nature Reserve as a volunteer, the Reserve has been included in the scope of the new voluntary organisation, the Friends of Cuckmere. News and events including forthcoming voluntary work-parties can be found at this website: www.cuckmerefriends.org. Details also available from Seaford Town Council. Our next fundraising event is an Open Garden on Saturday 5th July from 2 to 5pm at 80 Sutton Road, Seaford BN25 1SX. Entrance is £3.50 per head, which includes a Cream Tea. There will be plant and secondhand book stalls, as well as a SHNR information stand. Enquires on 07732 335175.

Seaford Silver Band April was quite a busy month for the band. The 12th was the evening of our Spring Concert, A Night at the Movies. This, as the title suggests, was a night of music from the shows, including Mary Poppins and the Best of Bond and many more well known pieces. This was a great success and the first concert under our new musical Director Lewis Delivett. Guest performances included the Bishop Bell School Choir and violin solos performed by Maeve Jenkinson. Wednesday 23 April 2014 was the retirement party for our departing Musical Director Dr Isla Sitwell (below centre). Isla has been conducting the band for the past 20 years. He took over temporarily while we found a suitable conductor! The band only works slowly and it took twenty years to find this suitable person.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB Maundy Thursday saw the talented Graham King demonstrate not only his skill in flower arranging but also his versatility in constructing containers and display stands. He started with two plywood rings, the smaller was made from the piece cut out of the larger. The large ring was covered in coir and the small one with silver birch bark. These were suspended from a simple stand with a dish and oasis. Folded aspidistra leaves were added to create a dark green surround, followed by yellow roses and lemon mini gerberas. The finished arrangement was a glorious cascade. The second container was made out of a solid piece of insulating material, covered again with silver birch bark. This was shaped and on the top a cut-out made a ledge on which an oasis tray rested. For this design, pussy willow twigs were placed horizontally on one side of the oasis, moss was used to cover exposed oasis in the back of the arrangement and bright orange gerberas with dark brown eyes completed a simple and effective horizontal arrangement. Next, two different-sized galvanised watering cans were placed one on top of the other, and on two separate dishes willow, griselinia, twigs, pink gerberas and ranunculus, together with a little moss, were arranged to beautiful effect. A large chimney pot was cleverly transformed using large pieces of silver birch bark, which curled around, above and infront. Green hosta leaves with a creamy white border were complimented by midnight blue hyacinths and white lysianthus. Graham’s final arrangement was using an old wooden dining chair, which had been rescued from his father’s shed and lovingly restored. A box of apples was placed in a diagonally upright position on the chair and a piece of cheese cloth suitably draped around. Begonia leaves, pink and white stargazer lilies, white lilac, white gerbera and ammi magus (better known as Bishop’s Flower or ornamental Cow Parsley) were arranged on the seat. The finishing touch came from small branches of viburnum opulus roseum with acid green flowers. Jill Whiteman gave the vote of thanks, followed by refreshments and a raffle.
In June the World Association of Flower Arrangers Show is being held in Dublin and many of our members will be going to enjoy the exhibits, demonstratons and workshops. Jonathan Mosley, a very talented Flower Arranger from the Peak District has been chosen to represent the United Kingdom. There will be no meeting at St Luke’s in June, but instead on Thursday 12th June, our Secretary Mrs Mary McGhee has offered us the use of her garden for a garden party and cream tea together with plants, cakes and produce, sales table and other stalls, raffles and prize games etc. Tickets costing £3.50 each can be obtained from Tina on 01323 873162. Our meeting on July 18th will be back at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford 2.15pm for 2.30pm, where we hope to see current and former members, and lots of visitors who will be most welcome. Our demonstrator will be Stephen McDonnell from Brighton. It promises to be an entertaining and exhilarating afternoon. Further details from me, Tina Bacon on 01323 873162.

Hello, come in, what can I do for you? Do you suffer from PLUMBAGO, is your back a little sore? Or perhaps it’s PYRACANTHUS which you caught in Singapore? You’ve a nasty little HOSTA which I think I’ll have to lance. And I notice a SPIREA has been leading you a dance! Are you getting quite forgetful? Is NEMESIA the cause? Does your ANTIRRHINUM pain you when you’re walking out of doors? You’ve had SKIMMIA RUBELLA, I can see that by your nose. And CORNUS CAPITOSA has played havoc with to d
your toes! How is your VIBURNUM TINUS? Have you lost your sense of smell? Use a SYRINGA REFLEXA that should help to keep it well. I’m afraid your MACROCARPUS isn’t really up to scratch, and do avoid NIGELLA it’s a nasty thing to catch! Still, I think you’re doing nicely, watch the QUERCUS in your knees.Take your BERBERIS twice nightly Cheerio! Next patient please!!! Author unknown.

PEACHES
Many people are now becoming bored with the tasteless peaches which can be purchased from supermarkets. They now want to “grow their own” and get the flavour back in their lives. There are many new varieties and types of peaches or their smooth cousins, nectarines, coming on to the market and prices can be affordable. However, they do require careful siting. A dwarf bush type can be grown in containers placed in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, or out on a patio. They can also be grown fan-shaped against a warm wall within the greenhouse or extension. To grow them outdoors can be too much of a gamble and may well be best left alone. New varieties include New Saturn and Sauzee Bell which are both flat shaped or doughnut varieties. Both are self-pollinating with a full flavour. Crimson Bonfire is a dwarf variety with deep purple leaves that would enhance any patio. Avalon Pride is another fine peach which is particularly resistant to peach leaf curl. Water all peaches regularly and apply a tomato feed when the fruit has set. Hand pollinate in early spring using a fine brush, cotton bud or a traditional rabbit tail. The main pests to watch out for are Red Spider Mite and Scale. If you do still buy your peaches or nectarines from the supermarket then save the stones and sow in a pot of John Innes compost. If you’re lucky they may germinate and grow into fine trees. In a few year’s time you could be picking your own! For further information on available peaches or nectarines visit www.thompson-morgan.com or www.pomonafruits.co.uk. Mike Parker

Those visitors who wandered into Seaford Community Garden at the Crouch over the past few weeks could be forgiven for thinking they had entered a building site manned by worker ants in jeans scurrying about in disciplined order. A wheelbarrow chain gang set their alarms for 7am to be ready for a delivery of gravel – thanks so much Seaford Rotary Club, whose members also helped to ferry it in – destined for an area of mainly mixed ornamental grasses and herbaceous perennials in which the flower heads and stems will be left in place to provide winter interest. Meanwhile Robert is in slab-laying mode, and has paved the formerly very muddy area between the compost bins and the toolshed, against which James and Dave have installed water butts kindly donated by South East Water. To the welcome sound of sawing, the poly tunnel is also being transformed with much-needed potting benches – hooray, no more back ache! Of course, all this work has to go on around the normal activities of the garden, as the rest of us settle down to a morning of chatting while potting up plug plants, sowing seeds, weeding and digging beds for the vegetables that will be on sale later. The new area is looking lovely, with the freshly planted perennials doing well in the kind mixture of rain and sun we’ve had this spring, and the gravel has been spread ready for the grasses to be planted. The children’s area is being transformed by a family group who have all sorts of plans to make it attractive. The Wendy house is being refurbished and beds are being planted. Five volunteers attended the annual meeting of Seaford Fair Trade Group after which there was a film about

growing food sustainably in Venezuela. They returned with two points to consider: how alike their methods are to ours and how we must ensure that we sit down to Fair Trade refreshments. Thanks to Jan, our website at www.seaford-sussex. co.uk/scg now features a plant and a weed of the month, and to come will be recipes compiled by Stephanie which use produce grown in the garden, all contributions welcome. We hope to be looking our best for the Mayor’s Garden Trail on Sunday 22 June, but do come in and see us before then! We are open every Wednesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm and it won’t be long before we are open on Saturday mornings again too. See you soon! Seaford Gardening Club What a lovely sight to see all the spring bulbs and blossom during April and May after such a dull and wet winter. A great time for garden plants and gardeners alike. We can now look forward to the summer months ahead, to enjoy gardens, countryside and holidays. Our speaker for April, Ian Gledhill, gave a very interesting talk on the Volks Railway in Brighton. Magnus Volks was born in 1851 and lived in Brighton all his life. When he left school at 14 his father wanted him to carry on the family profession of clock making, but Magnus had other thoughts. He was interested in inventing machines. As soon as electricity had been created his curiosity grew. He built a generator and a gas dynamo and his home was the first to be lit by electric lights. He also secured the contract to supply the Royal Pavilion in Brighton with electricity. The electric car was his next venture and he became famous for making one for the Sultan of Turkey in 1898. Once the Pavilion work was completed he turned his attention to creating a mini railway. His idea was to run it along the sea front on Madeira Drive. However the council did not want the railway on the road, so instead it was built on the upper beach. To avoid the rising tides an elaborate machine called the Pioneer (nicknamed Daddy Long Legs), was made which was a 10-seater carriage on stilts. People did not understand how it worked but flocked to have a go on it. The council also didn’t want the train to travel west in front of the Grand Hotel, so instead it travelled east from the Chain Pier to Rottingdean. The journey was quite an experience, especially when the weather was bad! It was also classed as a tram and a ship because at high tide it had to travel over deep water.

After one particularly terrible storm, when a lot of damage was caused and the Chain Pier was wiped out, a new carriage and tracks were built which ran twice a day at low tide only. This time the line was built to Black Rock and continued to run during the First World War. The council then asked for the length of the track to be reduced at the start and end and so what remained is what is seen today. It is now owned by Brighton council and only operates during the summer months. Magnus Volks died in 1937 and is buried in Ovingdean churchyard. Ian explained that when he’s not giving his talks (or doing pantomime with Julian Clary!) he volunteers on the Volks Railway. He ended his talk with a ride down the oldest electric railway which will be 131 years old this year. We were all enthralled for over an hour with Ian’s knowledge, sense of humour and enthusiasm. Our next talk on Wednesday, 25th June is with David Fitton on Seaside and Chalk Gardening – no slides but plenty of plants for a hands-on experience. 7.30pm at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place (use the front door opposite Tesco). Entry is £2 for visitors or £10 to join for the year – no extra charges. Refreshments are available and raffles are held on some evenings. Do come along and enjoy a friendly and informative evening with us. Everyone is welcome. For more details telephone Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc Non-members are welcome to join our two outings; Greys Court on Saturday 14th June and Waddesdon Manor on Saturday 26th July. Please telephone Anne for details. Photo is of Daddy Long Legs, taken from Ian Gledhill’s Audio Tour of the Volks Electric Railway Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

SEAFORD TREES: HOW YOU CAN HELP – AND IT DOESN’T NEED MONEY pennies, in dry spells in the Seaford Tree Wardens’ Group is back in business after a pause. We claim no authority except that we love trees and have tried to study, plant and care for them. Trees gained a bad name in London, because the soils there are mostly clay, which heaves or sinks with the amount of water it contains. So a really big tree, planted within a few feet of a house on clay, can over time cause bad cracks if the house wasn’t built properly – and insurance advertising has been quick to frighten people with this. The other media theme is “trees falling and killing people” – 3 or 4 people out of 60 million in Britain are killed by falling trees every year, as against up to 2,000 on the roads. The answer to these fears is to ask sellers of trees how big these are likely to grow, and to choose the smaller ones – rowans, hawthorns, cherries etc if you are anxious. If you have a young tree in the verge in front of your house, please give it a bucket of water, costing a few

HUGE RESPONSE TO CHARITY’S FOOD COLLECTION
Easter Saturday at Morrisons in Seaford saw a record-breaking collection of food for the hungry in the area. Seahaven Storehouse once again held one of its collection days, by kind invitation of Morrisons, and jars, tins, bottles and packets of groceries were very generously donated by members of the public who were shopping in the store. Although it was a very busy Saturday, and everyone was shopping for last-minute items for the bank holiday, nonetheless many made time to stop and read the list of needed food items and add them to their trolleys. It was a good opportunity, too, for the Seahaven Storehouse team to engage with some of the customers and reassure them how meticulously the food is weighed in, weighed out, and distributed only to those whose need is genuine. Many had been unaware that such a need for basic food items existed until they spoke to the team.
need for the food items. Seahaven Storehouse is one of the Mayor’s two chosen charities for the year, and he gets involved whenever he can, lending a helping hand in all sorts of ways. Dawn Woodgate, who heads up Seahaven Storehouse, said, ‘The response from the public was unprecedented, and we are so grateful, as the need to provide food is, sadly, growing. More and more families are coming to us in real need, and so far we have not had to turn anyone away. The good news is that, after a period of time with our support, many families and individuals go on to get jobs or improve their income and do not need us any more, which is great. But we still like to see our former clients and many pop into Seaford Community Church on a Thursday morning for a cuppa and a friendly chat.” If you would like to donate, please leave groceries in the bin in Morrisons just through the checkout, or bring to Seaford Community Church on a Thursday morning between 10am and 1pm. You can always contact Dawn on 07921 844930 or email seahavenstorehouse@gmail. com to find out what is needed. Photo: Seaford Mayor Cllr Mark Brown in Morrisons with three of the Storehouse helpers.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Seahaven Coastal Trail
Sussex Community Development Association has been working in partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority, East Sussex County Council and the regeneration partnerships in Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford, to develop a project which will establish a new ‘Seahaven Coastal Trail’. The aim of the project is to connect the four communities of Telscombe Cliffs, Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford along the coastal route, to celebrate their coastal heritage, promote local points of interest and local businesses, and create community ownership of the trail. Funding for the project has come from the National Lottery, through its Awards for All scheme and the South Downs National Park Authority. Supporting partners have been Peacehaven, Telscombe, Newhaven and Seaford Town Councils, and Lewes District Council. Signage has been installed from Peachaven to Exceat, a website is being created by Seaford-based firm Hothorse, and guided walks and celebratory events are
being held during May, June and July for local people. There will be a variety of themed walks and activities aimed at a range of abilities – for example short walks, family friendly activities and themed walks, based around wildlife or history of the coast. Penny Shimmin, Chief Executive of Sussex Community Development Association said, ‘We have a beautiful coastline in this area and are delighted to have a chance to promote it through this project. It has been really well supported by a different range of funders and partners, and this spring we have a chance to celebrate it through a range of themed walks for local people.’ For further information on the walks or to become a volunteer contact Jessie Rodriguez on 01273 516032 or jessie@ncda.org.uk.

French Twinning Group  Small acorns, brief encounters and wartime links
It gave us great pleasure last month to see the first friendships develop between junior twinners and their families. La famille Lafon were given a warm welcome by the Wadlow family in Alfriston. Helena and Gabriel tried out English schools too and they all enjoyed a pub quiz and a curry at The Smugglers. Charleston Farmhouse, local gardens and the beautiful Sussex spring countryside all provided a perfect setting for new friendships. A return visit to Normandy is planned for later in the year! Nadine Lafon, who is herself a primary school teacher was impressed by her visit to Alfriston Primary School and took home some ideas for her own classroom. She was also able to indulge her near obsession for the English tearoom! The family met other twinners who were all invited to meet again in Normandy soon. Other families are now making informal visits to see new friends outside of our official weekends so real links and friendships are growing. The closeness of Veules-lesRoses to Dieppe makes these brief encounters quite easy for us. We are about to embark on our first formal twinning visit of the year for the Rose Festival. During the

crossing we intend to remember that it will be almost 70 years to the day that the T.S.S. Worthing left our coast to play an important role in the D-Day landings at Arromanches. T.S.S Worthing took up the NewhavenDieppe crossing in 1928, which she did in three hours. She was a luxury vessel with superb passenger facilities and has an amazing history. She was converted in December 1939 to a hospital carrier and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation, and survived fierce aerial attacks. Later she assisted in evacuation of troops from Cherbourg and Western France. She was then refitted as a landing craft carrier and landed forces at Arromanches on D Day. In 1945 she returned to the NewhavenDieppe route with her original name the Worthing. Although the D-Day landings took place in June, Veules-les-Roses was not liberated until the first week of September1944; we have been invited to join the commemoration events in Veules the weekend of 3rd/4th September. Another date for your diary 13th July in Alfriston: French themed day with French cafĂŠ/ Bal Musette/French Market. 30 Years and counting for Seaford Twinning
CASCADING BEARS
In 1984 Seaford twinned with Bönningstedt, just north of Hamburg. Friendship between East Sussex and the Pinneberg area of Germany started with the Sussex Regiment’s occupation of the area. Bönningstedt literally sent out scouts to Sussex looking for a twin in the 1970s, staying at Corsica Hall in Seaford. When they met the Seaford Silver Band that sold them on friendship with Seaford. Seaford sent a party to visit them in 1982, when they adopted the Seaford Town Crier as their Stadtausrufer. Formal twinning – or partnerschaft – followed in 1984. The celebration of the 30th Birthday takes place in Germany in July, with the Silver Band travelling to the town accompanied by 20 twinning members. In Seaford there will be an informal celebration on Saturday 14th June at 7.30 in the Council Chamber. Anyone may attend, but please book with Liz Riley on 896315. Bring your own drinks and a plate of food to share – an “American Buffet”. Former members of the Twinning Association, and the 70-strong “Plauschgruppe” or German Conversation Group, are also invited.

A treat for every teddy bear in Seaford awaits this month. It doesn’t matter if they are big or small, or even tiny. It doesn’t matter if they are very old or very young – they will all be welcome to take part in a tea party just for them. It will be held at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, on Saturday, June 14th, between 2pm and 4pm. A suitable tea for bears (and their owners) will be included in the very reasonable price of admission, and the event also offers a special challenge. Particularly brave bears will have the chance to parachute from an upper window of the Chapel Rooms alongside the church. An appropriately soft landing will be provided, of course. The party is for all ages, and will raise money for the charity Family Support Work, which is also supported by the shop Wise Books at Sutton Road, Seaford.
