seaf ord rota ry A big thank you to the people of Seaford for their generosity supporting the Seaford Christmas Collection for December 2019. Young Voices at the O2 Arena

We received a request from Seaford Primary School for help with the transport for their choirs to go up to the O2 Arena in London to take part in ‘Young Voices’ massed choir concerts.

For the past 20 years, Young Voices has staged the largest children’s choir concerts in the world with over 2 million children having taken part. Each night, between 5,000-8,000 children perform as a single choir to a sold-out audience of family and friends. The aim is to inspire a love of music and create memories for the children that will last a lifetime. The music is selected to create a diverse musical repertoire all with the intention to introduce children to the widest possible spectrum of music. By providing a diverse range of musical styles children learn, enjoy, and gain a fuller understanding of music and what it means to sing together.

Nothing can prepare you for the sound of thousands of children singing together. It makes for one of the most exciting and memorable musical experiences you can imagine. So, it didn’t take us long to agree to support Seaford Primary School by providing some money to help with the cost of coaches to take the 92 children to London and back.

Thus, on 10th January, President Keith Ross presented a cheque for £600 to Seaford Primary School, accompanied by Youth Services Chair Paul Vaesen and Publicity Officer Mark Forrester.

After the ‘Young Voices’ event on 22nd January, music teacher at Seaford Primary Kate Steer remarked that she thought that it was ‘the best ever!’ – the children had a great experience. They were inspired by guest artists who sang along with them, including Ruti, winner of the 2018 The Voice competition, who pointed out to the audience where she had sat when she had herself competed in Young Voices in 2007, Tony Hadley from the ’80s New Romantic band Spandau Ballet and the Shires, and Ben Earle and Chrissie Rhodes, who have progressed from playing gigs in Bedfordshire to becoming one of the most talked about acts in Nashville, home of country music.

On 31st January, we received a charming thank you card signed by the children who travelled to Young Voices thanking us for helping them to get to the massed choir concerts.

Paul Vaesen Seaford Rotary Young Musician of the Year Competition 2020

The competition, which takes place at 6.30pm at Seaford Baptist Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, on Saturday 7th March, is organised by Seaford Rotary. (Entries closed in February.) It is the first stage of a national competition run by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI).

The competitions (which are for amateurs) are for soloists in two categories, Solo Instrumental and Solo Vocal. There is also a competition for ensembles made up of between 2 to 5 instrumentalists and/or vocalists.

The competitions aim to offer young people: • The experience of performing on a public stage; • An opportunity to showcase their talent; • Impartial feedback and assessment of their performance by experienced adjudicators.

The Young Musician of the Year competition is one of a number of competitions run during the year by Seaford Rotary for Youth in Seaford. Others include Young Chef, Young Artist, Young Photographer, Young Writer, Young Scientist – which is part of STEM Challenge (Science, Technology, Engineering and
