Welcome
Welcome to the May issue of Seaford Scene. Isn’t is wonderful having the light evenings again? There’s so much more you can do with your day. This month we have two bank holidays on Monday 5th and 26th, so be sure to get out and enjoy the time, if you’re not working! This year, Seaford celebrates the 150th year of the Seaford railway line. Turn to page 5 for more details. Also, in recognition of 100 years since the First World War, the Royal Sussex Regiment are asking for your help in locating descendants of those who fought in the war – more information can be found on page 52. NEW RESIDENTS ON SEAFORD HEAD Seaford Town Council and Sussex Wildlife Trust are pleased to present new residents upon the Nature Reserve – three cattle. Two British whites and one British black went on to Seaford Head on Thursday 6th February. The cattle have been introduced on to the Head as part of the management plan that was commissioned by Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve Committee to provide a guide on the best possible management for the nature reserve over a five-year period, 2013 to 2017. The site is degrading due to overgrazing in some areas and a lack of grazing in other areas. Sussex Wildlife Trust took over the management of the 83-hectare site for Seaford Town Council at the beginning of June 2013. Coordinating the conservation work at Seaford Head is the Trust’s Assistant Reserves Officer, Sarah Quantrill.
These cattle are a particularly good breed for conservation grazing, which will help control the coarser grasses and scrub, and contribute to improving this area of chalk grassland. The cattle will be grazing on the reserve for around two months, being checked on daily and with access to water. The cattle are used to being on Sussex Wildlife Trust land and are relatively docile. Dog owners, however, should keep their dogs under close control or on a lead. If they are approached by cattle they should let the dog off the lead. There is electric fencing around the area with three access gates. Sussex Wildlife Trust ask that people make sure the gates are kept closed. There are information signs at the three access points for the grazing area, including the contact number for the grazier in an emergency, 07884 496807. Anyone wanting more information on the nature reserve or with an interest in joining one of the voluntary groups that currently help care for the reserve, should in the first instance contact either Seaford Town Council on 01323 894870 or admin@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk, or speak to Sarah Quantrill on 01273 492630.

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (cert 15)
A thorough and unflinching biopic about a man whose personal integrity made him the greatest politician of our times. Beginning with the young lawyer, boxer and bridegroom through the years of his increasing politicisation under the repressive regime of apartheid, followed by his trial and lengthy imprisonment. Finally the man who never compromised his beliefs emerges as a world-leading statesman.
CONFLICT & SOME VICTORIES
Our opening film this month is a documentary that scooped a BAFTA this year. Not only is The Act of Killing a candid exploration of war crimes, but unbelievably the stories are told by the war criminals themselves.
2.30 Sat 24 May
OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR (cert PG)
7.30 Fri 9 May
THE ACT OF KILLING (cert 15)
Nothing is stranger than the truth they say, and here exmembers of the Indonesian government’s death squads tell all for the camera, blithely re-enacting atrocious acts of violence they committed against communists in the 1960s. Enthusiasm surfaces to get fully into role, makeup included, for scenes of torture, but blink and you’ll miss any note of regret in their reminiscences. Winner of Best Documentary BAFTA 2014.
To celebrate the centenary of the beginning of WW1, we are showing this original and affecting anti-war musical directed by Richard Attenborough with an outstanding British cast. The film programme, tickets and membership are all available online, at www.seafordcinema.org, Seaford Tourist Centre and on the door. Seaford Community Cinema is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. You’ll find a warm welcome at our screenings, which are held in the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane, BN25 1QL.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Spring 2014
Welcome to our Spring 2014 Newsletter, which we hope you will find useful and informative.
If you are out on your own, we urge you to maintain your awareness and keep your bags and belongings close to your body and not loose.
SUBSCRIPTIONS/MEMBERSHIP
The following scams are still occurring locally, so please remain alert to them if you feel you are targeted in any way.
We are very pleased to report that at the time of writing, we have approximately 850 members so far for 2014. The Subscription year runs from January to December and we expect a further tranche will join following distribution of this Newsletter. One of our aims is to increase membership year-on-year, and we hope to attract enough to overhaul the 2013 figure of 1150. A Membership Form is printed at the end of the Newsletter for your use if you have not yet joined or renewed this year. For 2015, we plan to have a new Membership Recording System up and running which will provide the facility for members to join and renew ‘on-line’ and pay their Subscriptions through bank transfer.
2014 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our 2014 AGM was held on Thursday evening, 20th March and was attended by approx. 30 members. We had addresses from the Chairman and the Treasurer summarising our activities and performance over the last year, and the existing Committee were re-elected en bloc for a further year. Following the formal business, Chief Inspector Rob Leet gave an interesting talk covering the history of Policing from the 1700s to modern times. The meeting concluded with light refreshments.
LOCAL CRIME / HANDBAG THEFTS
We receive regular updates and information from Sgt Stuart Mullins and the overall picture is that crime and anti-social behaviour in Seaford is falling, but there are serious concerns about three recent handbag snatches. This type of crime is uncommon in Seaford and the three incidents have similarities, so it is believed they were carried out by the same person. In each case, an elderly person was the victim, walking along an alleyway or pathway on their own.
18
SCAMS
Distraction Theft – At a supermarket, you are observed using a payment card and entering a PIN, and when you carry your bags back to your car you are distracted by somebody asking directions, or saying you have dropped some money or that your tyre is flat. The distraction that this causes, allows an accomplice to try to steal your wallet or unattended handbag. They then use your card to withdraw cash from your account. Courier Fraud – You get a call from a person
claiming to be from your bank or card company saying something is wrong with your account and they need you to verify your PIN and have your card returned for cancellation. They arrange to send a courier to collect it. Once they have your card, they use it to withdraw cash or make purchases with it.
Lottery Scam – You may receive notification you have won a prize in a lottery that you never actually entered. If you reply and try and claim the prize, your details will be sold on and you will be inundated with prizes and competitions to enter and will be enticed to send in release fees etc. Boiler Room Scam – You may receive an unexpected call by someone giving you financial advice on a great investment deal and pressurising you to invest in it. The caller will be very persistent and will be using a well rehearsed script. This is an attempt to get you to part with your money, and the investment will almost certainly be worthless. 0809 Scam – You receive a call or letter asking you to ring an 0809 number for some good news. Beware, this is a very high cost premium number and there is no good news for you.

COLD CALLING REMINDER
This is just a reminder that Seaford and Bishopstone has been a No Cold Calling Zone for nearly 2 years and the number of uninvited doorstep callers and intrusions has dropped significantly. Remember, if you are “cold called” you are fully empowered to ask the person to leave immediately. If they do not leave, they are committing an offence, and you can call the police and ask them to remove the caller.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH PUBLICITY
In our quest to publicise our activities and hand out advice, we are planning to have an information stand in the Broad Street area one Saturday morning in June. We will have brochures and handouts to distribute and will be free to answer any questions from the public.
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS
The Police Panel Meetings are open to all residents and one is held in each of the three areas every three months. NHW supports these meetings and we try to have a representative at each of them. At the time of writing, the next meetings are as follows: East/North Panel – 17th June 2014, 7.30pm at St Lukes Church Hall, Walmer Road. Central/South Panel – 17th June 2014, 6pm at Council Offices, 37 Church Street. Times and venues are also displayed at the Police Station, 37 Church Street, and on the Police website www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments. At a recent East Panel Meeting, an address was given by Steve O’Connoll of Seaford Speedwatch, who informed the meeting that they had recently recorded 99 speeding offences in Seaford and sent out 83 letters to motorists. He is keen to remind motorists that the speed limit in Seaford is 30mph, and that extra caution is required around schools etc.
Steve would be pleased to hear from anybody who would like to help with speed monitoring in Seaford on steve.seafordspeedwatch@gmail.co.uk.
SEAFORD RAILWAY LINE 150 YEARS
2014 is the 150th anniversary of the opening of the railway line into Seaford and a series of events and celebrations is being planned for Saturday 7th June. If you would like to be involved in the planning or act as a steward on the day, please contact Peter White, Town Crier on thewhites@pwhiteseaford.co.uk.
CALL TO FILL VACANCIES
We are urgently in need of a volunteer to fill the role of Publicity Officer. This would involve, as an example, the writing and co-ordination of the printing and distribution of this Newsletter, so if you are able to spare some time and help us in this worthwhile cause, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please see below for a list of roads without a Deliverer for these Newsletters. Again, if you can assist, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB of SEAFORD It’s not too late to get involved with the sponsored walk, which is raising money for Seaford Lifeguards, Waves and the Starfish Project. The event is happening on Sunday 4th May and starts from the Martello Fields (next to the Martello Tower on the seafront) at 9am. It will be a circular route, starting from the Martello Fields and going along the Promenade, sweeping through the old village of Bishopstone and up onto the South Downs Way. Walkers will then descend into Alfriston, following the Cuckmere river to Exceat, before climbing Seaford Head and returning to the start point, a total of thirteen and a half miles. Marshals will be on hand to direct walkers around the route, and the club’s Tavern in The Tent will be on hand to offer refreshments at both the start and finish of the walk. Event organiser, John Windsor, said, “Come along and support these local good causes, it only costs £6 to
register. Go to www.seafordmartellorotarywalk.org.uk or you can register on the day. The event starts at 9am. We look forward to seeing you !”
NEW AWARDS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN SEAFORD AND ALFRISTON The Martello Rotary Club of Seaford is delighted to be launching the SEAFORD YOUTH SPORTS AWARDS to reward our young people for their sporting achievements, which can sometimes go unnoticed or unheralded. Young people can sometimes be given a bad press, however we recognise that there is a vast majority in our community who work very hard, with incredible dedication, and achieve amazing results in all areas including sport. We are hoping to highlight these wonderful youngsters in our award ceremony in November 2014.
THIS YEAR WE ARE WALKING FOR:
You can help with this by nominating any young people who have been extremely successful in sport this year. There are 5 categories for individuals or teams who have made major contributions to their sport. These include awards for volunteers, teams, commitment, most improved and of course the Young Sportsperson of the Year.

Seahaven Lioness Club After last year’s successful Barn Dance it was decided to do it all again, and on Friday 7th March at Seaford Constitutional Club a good crowd once again danced the evening away to the music and calling of Ded Efnick. A ploughman’s supper was provided in the interval and a raffle was organised. Altogether the event raised a little over £500 for Leo House at Home. Leo House was set up some years ago by Brighton Lions Club to provide care at home for children and young adults with lifelimiting conditions, and support to their families, through a team of specially trained nurses (www.leohouse.org. uk). Although based at Chestnut Tree House Hospice near Arundel, they do provide their valuable and much appreciated service in the Seaford area. At the very end of March there was a Lucky Receipt Draw at Sainsbury’s in Newhaven, raising money for the Newhaven lifeboat. This was very well supported, making a profit of around £225 after paying out the winner of the lucky ticket. So thanks to all the Sainsbury’s shoppers who helped, which will surely include plenty of people from Seaford, as well as Newhaven and surrounding areas. By the end of April we are hoping to be running our Saturday morning stalls in Broad Street, weather permitting (with thanks to Tansley’s for allowing the use of their yard). On 24th May it will be, as is customary on the Bank holiday weekend, largely a plant stall, offering bedding plants, seedlings, cuttings and house plants. We would like to remind everyone that all the money the Lionesses make at their fundraising events goes to good causes, mostly in the local community. The Club expenses and those of any social activities are kept completely separate and funded solely by the members.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Grease IS The Word! The unforgettable theme tune contains the lyrics “grease is the way we are feeling” and the audiences at the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane, Seaford were certainly feeling it after Seaford Musical Theatre Junior’s sold out show in April.
The award-winning community performing arts group tackled the world’s best-loved musical with energy, enthusiasm and character, and the audiences praised every aspect of the show, from the fabulous choreography by Stuart Hall, to the pitch-perfect vocals, coached by Julie’s Art Of Noise. Josh Henry and Tyanna Griffiths (Danny and Sandy) captured the best characteristics from Travolta and Newton-John, whilst still keeping the parts their own. Even though we knew what was coming – the transformation from shy pupil to blonde bombshell had the audience wolf whistling and cheering every night. Josh also added another string to his bow by taking on the role of Junior Director for the show and gaining his V50 award for volunteering. Sisters Shana and Gabrielle Edwards, who played Rizzo and Patty, were worlds apart as the surly leader of the Pink Ladies and the annoyingly exuberant head cheerleader, and Shana’s ‘West End quality’ rendition of ‘Worse Things’ was definitely a highlight of the show as well as the well known ensemble songs such as ‘You’re The One That I Want’ and ‘Summer Nights’. The Pink Ladies and T-Birds worked well together with great comedy performances by brothers Kyle and Danny Woolven (Sonny and Doody), with Alice Lawrence and Jade Rogers giving the right amount of

1950’s attitude and sass as Frenchy and Marty. A fabulous rendition of ‘Mooning’ by Harvey Wickens (Roger) and Aimee Eaton (Jan) had audiences spellbound, as did the later scene where Roger is left with his trousers round his ankles by the rest of the T-Birds! The opening bars of ‘Greased Lightening’ had the house up out of their seats as Samuel Eaton, as Kenickie, jumped on top of a roofless red Ford De Luxe and performed the timeless dance with his T Birds. The house band, MC’d by Phil McMullen and Margaret Farmiloe with support by Matt Delaloye and Max Gardner, was flawless. A quick change saw some of the Pink Ladies and chorus return as Angels with sparkling lights to back Liam Baines, playing the iconic Teen Angel, to sing to Frenchy as she drops out of Beauty School. Liam also took the part of Johnny Casino, partnering with Sam Jones as Radio DJ Vince Fontaine, although the part was ably covered by Olivia Simpson and Rebecca Woolven when Sam was called away to return to ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in London on two performance dates. Other characters were a vital part of the sparkling performance, including stern Miss Lynch (Charlotte Danbury), geeky Eugene (Charlie Lawrence) and Cha Cha DiGregorio (Sophie Simpson) with harmonious backing vocals from the chorus, including Olivia Wright, Connie Lawrence, Bobbi Danbury, Holly Bedford and Katie Ward. Continuing their community ethos, SMTJ also raised over £1,300 for Community Transport charity CTLA, supported by Barclays Bank match funding project. Rotary Club of Seaford Safety in Action
At a Club meeting in March we were pleased to greet Sussex Police PC Carolyn Ross and Senior Environmental Health Officer for Lewes District Council Tony Still (top photo), who co-ordinate the annual Lewes District Safety in Action Week annually. They explained that the week is for year 6 students and educates the children how to deal with different safety and emergency scenarios in relation to fires, accidents, electricity, dogs, strangers, alcohol, water, roads and food safety. The event teaches them about personal safety and the correct responses should they be faced with similar, real-life situations. Over 700 children from around 25 primary schools across the district take part in the morning or afternoon sessions, which are held at Newhaven Fort. The children,
in teams, visit different action stations, which are run by the emergency services, the local authority, power and transport companies. Teams are given a score based 2 Central Buildings, sutton park Road, Seaford opposite TESCO supermarket.

on what they learned from the scenarios and their teamwork, with a winning school being awarded a trophy at the end of the week. In addition, each child taking part receives a certificate and a goody bag of safety aids and additional information which can be considered later, either at home or in the classroom. The Rotary Club of Seaford sponsors the prizes each year; this year’s Safety in Action Week is 19th – 23rd May.
Charity Quiz Night
The Rotary Club of Seaford held its annual Charity Quiz Night at Seaford Head School on Friday 28th March. 16 teams of four entered the competition, including teams from the Rotary Clubs of Seaford, Seaford Martello and Newhaven. After eight gruelling rounds, two teams – the Outlaws and the Welly Wanderers (winners for the last 2 years) – tied for first place with an impressive score of 59 points each. The Quiz Master, Colin Pritchard had set two tie break questions which included a picture quiz, but both teams gained the same result. So a penalty shoot-out was required (actually a toss of the coin), the coin landing in favour of the Outlaws. The winning team received the magnificent trophy and bottles of wine each (photo above). The evening included a delicious supper at the interval prepared and served by ladies from the Inner Wheel. There was also a high quality raffle, with very generous prizes donated by local trades, including Devonshire Park Theatre, Diella’s Restaurant, Millies of Seaford, Morrison’s, Swindells Accountants, Church Lane Flowers, Sainsbury’s of Newhaven and Fotobox. Well done to all teams who took part and we hope to see you again next year.

Local Ventriloquist Sam Jones ON Britain’s Got Talent You may well recognise Sam Jones, a 21 year old ventriloquist and wellknown local entertainer, who appeared on the small screen when Britain’s Got Talent auditions were televised last month on ITV. Sam, who has lived in Seaford all his life, only had to face three of the panel as his audition fell on the day that Simon Cowell’s son, Eric, was born. Baby Leo, Sam’s ‘little fabric friend’, went down a storm with the audience, with dozens of people asking to have their photos taken with the cheeky puppet in the foyer. The show, hosted by Geordie duo, Ant and Dec, is in its eighth series with David Walliams, Amanda Holden, Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon giving their judgement and verdict on some of the seventy thousand applicants from across the UK. Our South Downs Exhibition 3 May – 16 June 2014 A unique project that brought together 45 schools’ and 2,407 school children from Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex to create art work inspired by the South Downs National Park will culminate in a special exhibition this summer. Our School Downs Exhibition is the largest yet, thanks to a partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority, and charity Learning Through Landscapes that has enabled schools across the South East to engage in unique cultural and outdoor learning opportunities. Pupils have collaborated to produce artwork for the exhibition inspired by works chosen from Towner’s Collection that feature locations in the South Downs National Park, including artists Harold Mockford, Jem Southam, Eric Ravilious, Louisa Catherine Paris and Alfred Fitzwalter Grace. In the exhibition, the Collection art works will be shown alongside the schools’ artwork and work by young people’s groups at the Towner Gallery, giving a multitude of perspectives on the inspiring landscape that surrounds us. Schools have been able to see the works first-hand at the gallery or use online teaching resources that have been specially created to support exploration of both the art and the outdoor locations. This Spring, several schools from Sussex took their pupils to Birling Gap, Beachy Head, Seven Sisters and Cuckmere Haven, Lewes, Ditching and Arundel to be inspired by the natural environment in the National Park.
Our School Downs Exhibition is the fifth annual schools’ exhibition that Towner has organised since the new building opened in April 2009. Towner’s awardwinning work with children and young people, and adults, including young offenders, people with learning difficulties and disabilities, and older people, is at the heart of the organisation’s work. Clare Halstead, Learning and Outreach Manager, said: “The Our South Downs Exhibition is a brilliant example of how partnership working can benefit an even greater number of children and young people, to develop an appreciation of the rich artistic, environmental and cultural heritage we have here in Sussex. We are also delighted to have the Argus newspaper as our media sponsor, which will help us engage even more families and parents. We can’t wait to see the final results of what is going to be an amazing exhibition of original art works.” Amanda Elmes, who leads on Learning, Volunteering and Outreach at the South Downs National Park said: “It’s always exciting to find new ways that teachers can use the National Park to inspire their students across the entire curriculum. The South Downs is such a great resource, and it’s been wonderful to work with Towner to help teachers use their collections and our landscapes together. I can’t wait to see the results go on display.” The Argus is the official media sponsor of Our School Downs Exhibition. Our School Downs Exhibition, 3 May to 16 June 2014, Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ. Open Tues – Sun, and Bank Holidays, 10am – 6pm, free entry. ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT SEARCHES FOR FAMILY TIES The Royal Sussex Regimental Association is currently working to seek any descendants of those that died, not only at Priez, France, in September 1914, but those of the 257 officers and men that fell from this point to December 1914 with a view to including them in the new monument commemoration on the old battlefield this autumn. Regimental Historian Col. Roderick Arnold explained, “Some interesting information has been found about the men on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, in the Regimental archive at the West Sussex Record Office and at the National Army Museum in London. Contemporary publications and newspapers have also been researched. But it is not nearly a full picture. After 100 years, it is difficult to find the descendants of these very brave men that gave their lives and we are most dependent on the general public to help us identify them.”
WESTERLEIGH NURSING HOME
Personalised care and support in a homely environment
The Association is currently fundraising to unveil a new Monument at Priez, France, on 10th September 2014, where the county regiment suffered its first casualties one hundred years ago to the day. It will not only be a memorial to the 22 members of the Regiment that died that day, all of whom will be listed on it by name, but it will also honour the memory inscribed in English and French of the 7,302 officers and men who died while serving in one of the Regiment’s twenty Battalions during the Great War. If anyone has any relatives concerning service in the Royal Sussex Regiment in the Great War, the Association is asking for help. Please get in touch at royalsussexregt@ live.co.uk or call Nigel Taggart on 01243 699881 if you have any information or photographs relating to the fallen. In the coming years research will be expanded to cover those that died in 1915 to 1919 as part of the Association’s Centenary commemorations. Donations relating to the monument can be made online at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/priez or by post with cheques/postal orders made out to “War Memorial Fund” and sent to: Mr B Hudson, 29 Henry Avenue, Littlehampton, BN16 2PA.

A Big “Bald” Decision from Newhaven Superstars! The evening of Saturday 30th November 2013 saw three sisters from Newhaven join the fight against cancer by shaving their hair off at their local pub, The Ship and inviting people to come along and watch! And on Saturday 15th March 2014, these fantastic ladies handed over a cheque for £5,026.98! On the night, people were lining up right around the corner to get a peek at the action! Together with sponsorship money, a raffle and a few supermarket collections, Sam Wyatt and her team of wonderful supporters have raised over £5,000 for Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer research. The brains behind the event, Sam Wyatt, said: “I never dreamt when I suggested I shaved my hair off that we would receive such support from so many people and raise so much money. When my sister, Denise, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in three years, I felt I wanted to do something to raise awareness and raise some money for Cancer Research. Denise has been through so much and I wanted to focus on doing something positive and give something back. My sisters, Helen and Kelly, and I all decided that to show our support we would all shave our hair off.
On the evening, ten more brave people had their hair shaved off too, all in aid of Cancer Research. We were totally overwhelmed by the amount of people who came along to show their support – Newhaven really came together that night and it was amazing to see! I would like to thank everyone who was involved in organising the event with us, and also thank all the businesses who donated to the raffle and supported us in other ways too. Without your support the event would not have been as successful. The biggest thank you goes to all the people who sponsored all of us and donated – together with some other fund raising made, the total amount raised over £5,000. This is an amazing amount of money for Cancer Research UK and their continued research into such a terrible disease.” Jessica Blake, Cancer Research UK’s Local Fundraising Manager for Brighton, said: “Sam and her sisters are an absolute inspiration, and we can’t thank them enough for all their hard work and dedication. “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. Thousands of UK women – and hundreds of men – are now breast cancer survivors thanks to advances in research. We have been at the heart of this progress and continue to be a major funder of breast cancer research, working towards a day when we beat breast cancer, for good. “Our work has underpinned today’s treatments for the disease and helped save thousands of lives. Eight out of 10 women now survive breast cancer for more than five years, compared with five out of 10 women in the 1970s. And the chances of long-term survival are improving all the time. “Without supporters like Sam and her sisters, we could not continue to make progress such as this. On behalf of Cancer Research UK, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in making this such a fantastic success.”

New blends – the legal definition of step-parenting Step families and ‘blended’ families are a very common feature of modern life. The definition of a step parent also appears to becoming more and more wide ranging. Step parents are often viewed as anyone who has taken on the role of a parent whether through divorce, death or otherwise. Step parenting now seem to encompass more situations than ever before but the legal definition of a step parent is very specific:
Picture this… You have recently married your spouse who has two children, Lily and Harry. Your spouse is at brownie camp with Lily for a few days leaving you to care for Harry at home. Harry is out playing football with his mates at the park. You get a visit from a police officer who tells you that Harry has been in a fight and has harmed another boy. The Science Behind the Smile
Mother Teresa said, “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.” Haven’t we all experienced feeling good because someone smiled at us? Yet science tells us that there is nothing simple about a smile. Imagine an appealing child or a cute kitten and you probably smile. Electrical signals travel from the cortex of your brain to the brainstem (the part that deals with basic body functions such as breathing, heart rate etc.). From there, cranial nerves carry the signal onwards to muscles in your face and you smile. But have you ever noticed that as you smile you actually feel happier? This is due to a positive feedback loop, whereby electrical signals are fed back to the brain from the smilingmuscles, reinforcing our feeling of joy. Our brain feels good, so tells us to smile: we smile and this tells our brain we feel good.
SMALL BUSINESS UNIT also activated. Scientists call the first smile a social smile, and the second a Duchenne smile, named after the scientist who first discovered it. We are surprisingly good at distinguishing between a real and fake smile, and we do this in three ways. First, we unconsciously compare the geometry of a person’s face to a standard smile. Second, we think about context and judge whether a smile is expected. Finally, we automatically mimic the smile, to feel for ourself whether it is fake or real. In fact if we are prevented from mimicking a smile (e.g. by clenching a pencil between our teeth) our ability to differentiate a real smile from a fake smile decreases dramatically!
Smiling reduces stress and generates more positive emotions. This is why we often feel happier around children – they smile more. Children smile on average about 400 times a day. Happy adults smile 40 to 50 times a day, but most of us only smile a maximum of 20 times.Yet smiling more is good for our health. Our brain even keeps track of our smiles – a Researchers have found that smiling can be as happinesssmile scorecard if you like, so it knows our emotional state. inducing as receiving a large, unexpected cash bonus! Did Scientists discovered that people who smile the most are you know that there are two sorts of smiles – the fake smile mentally more healthy, and live on average some seven and the genuine smile? In both the fake and the real smile, years longer than the rest of us. The good news is, smiling is the zygomaticus major muscle – which controls the corners contagious so spread yours around. As Louis Armstrong sang, of your mouth – is activated. But in a genuine smile, the “When you’re smilin’, keep on smilin’. The whole world smiles obicularis occuli muscle – which encircles our eye socket - is with you…” By Louise Addison Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers 58

Running Commentary... Many times in previous Running Commentaries I have touched on reasons for running and how it can raise one’s quality of life. I read recently that people who run are happier than those who don’t. That statement probably relates to the feel-good factor or ‘runner’s high’ that runners can experience during and after a run, but really it represents only a small part of a bigger picture of the health benefits. Running regularly can also improve patience, humour and ambition, and make you goodtempered and easy-going. Running is one of the best ways to give the heart (your most important muscle) an effective workout. By running regularly you can improve circulation and reduce the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke. That same good circulation is also effective in flushing out waste products, for example, when sweating/ perspiring. This will make your skin clearer. Running increases your ability to cope with everyday minor irritations and stress. Runners generally have lower levels of anxiety than those who don’t run. You can also increase your mental functions by running as it boosts blood flow to the brain. Running can enable you to get to sleep easier at night. It can burn 1000 calories in an hour-long session and will give you a stronger immune system. That means you will suffer less from minor illnesses, such as colds, fatigue, allergies, menstrual discomfort, backache and digestive disorders. Running regularly taxes the muscles and bones, which stimulates the bones to remain stronger and will not easily weaken with age. A regular running habit will lift your mood and build self-esteem. It will also increase your self-confidence as you reach fitness and/or weight loss targets, and it can help relieve mild depression too.’ I mentioned a few years ago the Portsmouth Jogger who found that when she took up running, it enabled her to come off all the medication she was on as a sufferer of Systemic Lupus Erythmematosus, an autoimmune disease that affects the whole body. The drugs were making her life unbearable, yet now she has the illness under control. Running regularly will have a subtle and profound beneficial effect on your general health, whatever your reasons for running. There are so many
other examples (too many to list here) of how running, particularly, regular running, is good for us. Yet despite all the benefits, most of us will not have been drawn to running for health reasons. At the Seaford Striders there are runners of all ages (8 to 70) who will, for instance, run a mile in anything from 5 to 15 minutes, but what unites such a diverse group of people is the enjoyment of running, not the feeling of being fit and healthy. May is absolutely full of races in Sussex. At either end are two marathons – the ‘Three Forts’ on the 4th and The Arun River Marathon on the 31st. Sandwiched in between are loads of shorter distance events, again, too many to list here, so whether you are a regular competitor or a runner who has not put themselves to the test, you are truly spoilt for choice. It’s just a simple matter of picking which ones to do. May is definitely a month to indulge! Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

WHAT’S ON AT THE HOP?
represent the Third Day of Creation. I first worked with the Raven when I was studying at the London College of Fashion and had to design fabric for the theatre. My daughter had just performed in her school production of Lorca’s Blood Wedding. The figure of Death comes onto the stage as an old beggar woman in green rags. When the young men die she stands at the back of the stage with her arms outstretched, like the ‘Bird of Death’. I produced a series of samples for this Bird of Death. Ten years later I was diagnosed with cancer, had an operation and was cured. At the same time one of my best friends died of breast cancer. I remembered the Bird of Death and created him as a therapy for such a sad time. He was a delight to make and feels soft and inviting - but his eyes are sinister.
“A Creation Story” Barbara Walters
Saturday 10th to Sunday 25th May 2014 Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am – 4pm; Sunday 12noon – 4pm; Closed Monday. ‘Walk & Talk’ The Exhibition with Barbara: Sunday 18th May 2.30pm Barbara Walters is a freelance artist and lecturer, and has taught a range of Adult Education classes from The “I Can’t Draw Club” to City and Guilds Design and Embroidery, and Advanced Textiles. She has been Chairman of the East Surrey and East Sussex Branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild and is a member of the Landscape and Arts Network and the Society of Eastbourne Artists. Her work is in private collections in England and abroad, and has been featured in several books and magazines.
“Of course I then had to make the Bird of Resurrection – the Phoenix. The Phoenix is traditionally a cross between an eagle and a pheasant. He was much harder to make and looks rather like Edith Nesbit’s grumpy Phoenix. The Owl, the Bird of Wisdom did not work. So I put him aside and made a series of two-dimensional birds including an owl. This Owl has wonderful ageless, wise eyes, but needed a home. I decided to attach him to a Robe for a Wise Woman – Athena.
Nearly thirty years ago Barbara heard in a lecture that Barnett Newman, the American Abstract Expressionist, painted large colour fields with thin stripes. He called the stripes “Zips” and said that before Creation there were Zips of Energy. As a textile artist Barbara immediately produced a rough prototype - “Before Creation There Were Zips”. She has been adding to her Creation Story ever since. It has become a neverending story. “‘A Creation Story’ is a retrospective exhibition to celebrate my 70th birthday. The exhibition loosely follows the seven days of the Biblical Creation. It includes embroideries, collages, paintings, books and collections. Along with this work I have made innumerable flower and garden embroideries, which of course can happily

“The first Robe was too gaudy for a Wise Woman so it became A Creator’s Robe. Adam collected leaves and flowers to make Eve’s Garland. It is even gaudier. “In Proverbs, Wisdom tells how she was beside God when He created the Universe, and so came Wisdom’s Robe. Mendicant priests in Africa lived under a vow of poverty, and begged for their food and clothing. Their tunics were made from fabric pieces that were given to them, but as they were God’s representatives they were given velvets and silks. Wisdom’s Robe is stitched onto fragile muslin and patched with fabric scraps, treasures and trims that I have been given by friends or have made over the years. Parts are very rich, others fraying and worn. It represents ageless love and wisdom that we accrue in our lives.” Hop Gallery, Castle Ditch Lane (off Fisher Street) Lewes, BN7 1YJ Email: info@hopgallery.com www.hopgallery.com Tel: 07740 424949

A Breath of French Air brought to you by
Alfriston and Cuckmere Valley Twinning Group We are your new local French Twinning group, still in its first year of formation. We are twinned with Veulesles-Roses, a beautiful village just down the coast from Dieppe, which is so well placed for weekend visits. Our aim is to foster as many links and friendships between our two communities as possible and maintain these for the future. We are not an exclusive group. Alfriston and Veules-lesRoses are our hubs, but both groups welcome members and supporters of all ages, from all neighbouring areas and even further afield. You don’t have to speak French, or be a host, but this of course can add to the fun. We are already planning a programme of events for 2014 on this side of the Channel, including fun activities, cultural visits and events with a French theme such as a Bal Musette on 13th July and we intend to celebrate our first birthday in style on 3rd to 4th October. Of course pop-up events with a French flavour could appear at any moment – fancy a Mystery Sparkling Wine Evening? Our French friends have invited us to their annual Rose Festival on 14th – 15th June, the Linen Festival 4th – 6th July, the Music Festival on 21st June and the Fete de la Mer on 15th August. Finally a very special event this year, the Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Veules-les-Roses on the weekend of 6th – 7th September. Want to join us?
If you are interested in supporting our group, if you want to enjoy new friendships on both sides of the Channel and be invited to all our events, social, cultural, gastronomic and sporty, just get in touch! fuchsia each, correctly answering questions during the talk, showing they were paying attention! Gina kindly donated another fuchsia as a raffle prize and after tea and biscuits the raffle was drawn.
On Thursday 20th March we held our AGM. Before the meeting started, as Chairman I welcomed members and presented a cheque for £300 to John Kenton-Page representing Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. This was the sum of monies raised and donated throughout last year. John gave a ten-minute talk on the work of the Air Ambulance and has offered to return with a full presentation at a later date.
On Thursday May 15th, the ever popular Nel de Jong Smith will be demonstrating “Florabundance”. The competition is “Blooming Marvellous” and I hope we will have lots of entries for Nel to judge. We meet at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford (the 12a bus stops almost at the door). Doors open from 1.40pm, the meeting begins at 2.30pm and usually finishes between 4.30 and 4.45pm. Our charity for this club year is The Newhaven Lifeboat.
The President S.A.F.C., Georgie Wall, was invited to chair the AGM. The officers and committee were re-elected en block and the two co-opted members Pam Bertram and Sue Ward were confirmed in post. Awards were given to the winners of the monthly competitions, Tina Bacon, June Horan, Mary McGhee, Sue Ward, Christine Webb and Jill Whiteman, and the AGM was completed in 37 minutes, a possible record! Following the AGM, Mrs Gina Bowman gave a talk on her experiences as a fuchsia enthusiast (photo right, including the severe flooding when a storm swamped her garden and plants with sea water and shingle! The TV gardener Chris Beardshaw spent a day with Gina and a full TV crew for a programme about gardening in challenging situations.
Visitors are always made welcome for £4.50 per meeting and we should love to see both new and old members. Subscription from March 1st 2014 to February 28th 2015 has been held for the past six years at £23.
For more details please call me, Tina Bacon, on 01323 873162

East Blatchington Lectures She is probably bestknown for her stories about Peter Rabbit, but although Beatrix Potter certainly was a prolific author, she was also a talented illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist. She published over 23 books, including her imaginative children’s books, featuring animals such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which celebrated the British landscape and country life, and delighted generations of children. Beatrix Potter died in 1943 at her home in a tiny village in the Lake District near Windermere, at the age of 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust.
MICHAEL UPTON DOMESTIC & COMMERCIAL PLUMBING & HEATING SERVICES
She is credited with preserving much of the land that now comprises the Lake District National Park. Potter’s books continue to sell throughout the world, in many languages, and her stories have been retold in song, film, ballet and animation. Her remarkable story is to be told by Ann Poulter at the next East Blatchington lecture, to be held on Tuesday, May 6, at St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road, Seaford. As usual, the lecture is open to everyone. It starts at 2.30pm, and tickets, including refreshments, are £5 on the door, or in advance from the Seaford estate agent Newberry Tully. Other lectures in the series are: June 3: Kay Blackburn presents an illustrated talk about the very different artist Stanley Spencer. July 1: Karen McCreedy gives an illustrated talk entitled: “Reel to Real Heroes – Actors at War”. August 5: Simon Brett, the author whose 80 books include the very popular comedy detective tales and Radio 4 series featuring the usually struggling actor Charles Paris. *** Apology: the scheduled Lecture on April 1st had to be changed at the last moment, owing to ill-health. A speaker from the Sussex Air Ambulance Service stepped in (or should that be flew in?) at the last moment to be a very able substitute, to whom we give great thanks. Photo: First edition, 1902

When everyone had eaten, members were served their lunch by President Jean (pictured above). On 15th March, we supported District Chairman, Francoise Cutts, at an Inner Wheel/Rotary get together in Ashington. This was an innovative event to encourage friendship between the two organisations. Members travelled from all over the district to join in the initiative, a time to rekindle friendships and make new ones.

Seaford Gardening Club At long last we have some good weather – the clocks have gone forward, so longer days are with us. We can now have fun sowing seedlings ready to make a colourful display in the summer months. Our speaker for March, Clive Hamblin, gave a very detailed talk on the ‘A-Z of Sussex’. The evening commenced with a rendition of ‘Sussex by the Sea’ which put us all in the mood for the many slides and running commentary. Our journey started at Alfriston, a village full of character. Its history of smuggling, the lovely crossshaped church of St Andrew, or Cathedral of the Downs, as it is commonly known, plus the first National Trust property, the Clergy House which was purchased for £10. It also boasts the oldest pub in England – the Star Inn. Balcombe came next with its famous viaduct which took two years to complete. Clayton, with its interesting church showing carvings of the Day of Judgement; the famous windmills, Jack and Jill, and the mile-long Clayton railway tunnel, with a little house built above one entrance, which runs under the Downs. The tower of St Margaret’s Church in Ditchling is a halftimbered house reputedly visited by Anne of Cleves. Fittleworth is described as a quaint village with a church dedicated to St Mary and which contains a Victorian font. Hurstpierpoint church has an interesting pulpit, which is approached from the rear – the reason for this is not quite clear! The first windmill was built at Isfield and the church is dedicated to St Nicholas. Jevington is another village well known for its history of smuggling. Kingston-by-Lewes sports a church made up of a hotchpotch of styles. Littlington Church of St Michael the Archangelwas our next port of call and the White Horse carved on the hillside near High and Over can be viewed from here, plus you can end a visit with a delectable cream tea at the first tea rooms opened in Sussex. Midhurst is a town where nothing ever hurries! Cowdray House, built by the Montague family, is nearby and the Pilgrim Fathers were believed to have stopped here. Newtimber has a 13-century church of St John the Baptist and the also the NT Newtimber House. Patcham’s church is Norman, with interesting windows. Sussex is full of surprises with National Trust properties including Monks House near Lewes, the country retreat of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury set. Telscombe
village can only be reached by the Rodmell road and has an interesting history. Vines Cross is small but sports a pub with two names! Wilmington has the famous carving of the Long Man on the hillside nearby and Yapton has a 12th-century church. We ended with the well known Drusilla’s Zoo – a lovely venue for summer visits. A fact-filled evening’s entertainment touring a lovely county. Our next talk on Wednesday, 28th May is with Graham Albon on ‘The Galapagos (in the steps of Darwin)’ at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, at 7.30pm (use the front door opposite Tesco). Entry is £2 for visitors or £10 to join for the year – no extra charges. Refreshments are available and raffles are held on some evenings. We now have a plant stall so bring along unwanted specimens. Come and enjoy a friendly and informative evening. Everyone is welcome. Telephone Anne Silk for more details on 01323 491331 or visit www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. Seats are available to book on two National Trust trips – one to Greys Court on Saturday 14th June and one to Waddesdon Manor on Saturday 26th July. Non members are welcome to join us – please telephone Anne if interested.

GARDEN THEFT
Why not come to our next Social Evening on Thursday 29th May. Our guest speaker is Barry Newman, (Chairman) National Vegetable Society, who will speak on “The Modern Kitchen Garden”. Please ask for Mike Parker (Chairman) or Sylvia Carter (Membership Secretary) about joining the Society!
Mike Parker to d o
We all take precautions to protect the contents of our home from theft, but do we ever stop to think that nowadays there are valuable items just sitting in our gardens. I don’t mean the gardening equipment locked in our sheds and garages, most of which are probably locked away safely. I’m talking about the plants, shrubs and flowers in your garden. Garden thefts used to aim just at specialist plants such as orchids, cacti and carnivorous plants. Home-owners have now been targeted for complete flowerbeds and boarders. It has even been reported that some councils have lost complete displays in their parks. The trouble is that even if you report the theft little appears to be done and no national statistics are kept. The answer then is for you to be aware and take reasonable precautions when you can. The back garden is the most vulnerable area. Secure fences and locked gates are important. Keep your front garden open and tidy. Paths should be crunchy and made of gravel. Install low wattage automatic lighting front and back. Boundary hedges should be prickly or spiky, Holly and Hawthorne are good. Finally liaise with your neighbours and watch each other’s property. Think about security in your garden, but remember these crimes are still relatively rare.
the two “shows” we hold each year. We organise three, sometimes four, coach outings each year and we hold eight monthly social evenings at the St Leonard’s Church Hall. Each meeting has a special guest speaker plus your garden questions/ answers, refreshments and a raffle. All details of these events are contained in our 45-page 2014 programme, which is issued free to all members. Please also visit our website on www.seafordhorti.com. You can now join the society via the website. Alternatively contact Sylvia (Membership Secretary) on 01323 891954 or Mike on 01323 898733. Your membership card also includes access to the Paradise Park Loyalty Scheme. So don’t delay, join today!

ay is the month when spring changes to summer. On most days the weather is getting warmer and by the end of the month it should be safe to plant out summer bedding and tender annuals. The garden can now be a very busy place so keep an eye on the weather forecasts and plan your work accordingly. If you are not already a member of the Seaford & District Horticultural Society then May is also an excellent time to spend a few minutes to join our friendly group. Membership costs only £6 for the year and covers everyone in the household. Membership entitles you to participate in
JOBS TO DO IN MAY
3 Prepare flowerbeds ready to plant out dahlias the first week of June. Towards the end of the month start to harden off dahlias ready to transplant outside. 3 Whiten greenhouses or put up shading to keep temperatures down during hot summer days. 3 Sow fast-growing annuals, herbs and vegetables. 3 Maintain a regular programme of weeding and checking for pests and diseases, particularly on fuchsias. 3 Earth up main crop potatoes. Complete planting out of onion sets.

Well, we did something very grown up and responsible the other day. We cleared the tea things early and had a very businesslike annual meeting, our first since adopting our new name of Seaford Community Garden. And it says something for the ethos of our garden community that the formal part was done and dusted in ten minutes or so. It’s not that there wasn’t plenty to discuss, but we’re really not a ‘committee’ sort of organisation, preferring to decide what we are going to do while generally chatting over the chores – and even these become a pleasure when the weeding is shared with friends and the sun is shining – so Chairman Dave was duly re-elected along with the rest of the committee. We all loved the suggestion of Flanders poppies to brighten the entrance bed this summer, this year being the centenary of the start of World War I, and Tricia has been busy sowing them.
Briar Rose Garden Services All aspects of gardening work undertaken, including:
grass cutting shrub pruning hedge cutting border clearance turf laying small tree pruning fencing
We all also feel strongly that the garden should demonstrate different kinds of gardening technique and growing for specific conditions, so we are currently establishing a bed for shade plants and, on the opposite side, near the classroom, James is planting up grasses for a new border – and here we must thank Carolyn McCutchan for her generous donation of many new perennials which we have potted up among them. Carolyn and her husband, John, are largely responsible for the fabulous Bluebell Walk at Arlington (www. bluebellwalk.co.uk) which will be open this year until 18th May. James is also landscaping our new gravel garden for dry areas, shingle for which was due to arrive at the time of writing. In the polytunnel the tomatoes are being planted up and outside the early spring is seeing the broad beans putting on a vigorous spurt of growth. Blue tits were fluttering around a nest box so with a bit of luck we’ll have some fledgeling pictures to bring you soon. Of course, though, you could come and see for yourself by visiting us at The Crouch any Wednesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm. The Garden Team Photo: The grases and perennials border is under way.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY
To perform “A Choral Masterpiece” at the Spring Concert
On Saturday 10 May 2014 Seaford Choral Society will perform Dvorak’s ‘Stabat Mater’ at 7.30pm in St Leonards Church, Seaford. Antonin Dvorak’s Stabat Mater has to be one of the most beautiful and moving pieces ever to come out of the Czech lands. The Choir is delighted to be bringing this major choral work to Seaford and consider this performance as fitting tribute to their Music Director, Sion Parry (left) who leaves the area in the summer to take up the post of Director of Music at Ipswich School in Suffolk. Sion has been in charge of the choir since 2008.

Dvorak was born in a small Bohemian village in 1841. The son of an innkeeper, butcher and amateur musician, he was a violinist and trained organist before the age of 18, and early in his music career composed a ton of music, influenced by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Wagner. Employing the idioms and melodies of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia, he started writing this religious cantata in 1876, following the death of his daughter, Josefa. Due to his other obligations, he was unable to finish the work, and only did so when his two surviving children also died within a short time of each other in 1877. Stabat Mater is Dvorak’s first work on a religious theme and is divided into ten individual parts. It was first performed in Prague in December 1880. It was an instant success. The tragedies that happened to Dvorak and his wife may seem a recipe for an irredeemably gloomy work, but in fact the Stabat Mater is extremely tuneful and hugely uplifting. Four excellent soloists have been chosen to sing with the Choir and all have been heard singing on previous occasions, with high acclamation. They are: Susanna Fairbairn Soprano Rebecca Anstey Alto William Blake Tenor Thomas Faulkner Bass Nick Milner-Gulland will accompany the performance at the organ, and Sion Parry will conduct his final concert. Tickets are £10, to include programme and can be obtained from Newberry Tully Estate Agents in Church Street, Seaford from early April.
