4 Seaford Splash!
to the October issue of Seaford Scene. I can’t believe it’s October already, where has all the time gone to? The summer seems to have drifted by in a blur and now we are into autumn and the nights are drawing in. Don’t forget to put your clocks back an hour this month on Sunday 31st. It’s also Halloween that night, so beware of any strange encounters in that additional witching hour! Seaford Bonfire Society’s procession returns again on Saturday 23rd (restrictions allowing), starting at the White Lion Hotel at 7.15pm, plus a bonfire and fireworks display – see the What’s On pages, 113 to 117. After being postponed several times, the annual Seaford’s LitFest 21 is finally being held this month at the Crypt Gallery – turn to page 12 for details of this years events. Seaford Community Cinema opens it’s door again at the Barn Theatre for a season of box office films for you to enjoy, whilst fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe where it sold out with rave reviews, Seaford Little Theatre is showcasing Love in the Time of Lockdown. Turn to page 22 for details of tickets. At last live music concerts return with the Corelli Ensemble on Sunday 17th (page 38) and Seaford Music Society on Sunday 24th (What’s On page 115). Things seem to be returning to some kind of normality thankfully – all of this and so much more in your October issue. Stay safe and enjoy!

Seaford Photographic Society We had the last of our informal summer competitions at the end of August and, again, it proved very popular. The theme was Something Red and we had 30 entries in total. Members voted for their favourites via an online form and we then all met on Zoom, where our Chairman talked through the entries and announced the winners. The winning photographers then told us a bit about how and why they had taken each image. Congratulations to Steve Hewitt who took both first and third places. His winning image was a very creative
light-trail photo entitled Red on the Beach. Simon Rigby’s You Got Mail was the second most popular, and in third place was Steve’s shot taken on a hot air balloon ride. At the beginning of September we had our first meeting since March 2020 back at our usual venue. It was good to catch up with fellow club members in person, some of whom we hadn’t seen for all that time. We were pleased to welcome two potential new members and Notice: This issue of Seaford Scene has been distributed by an independent delivery company. we hope we will be seeing some more over the next few weeks. The main business of the meeting was the 2020/21 AGM which, under normal circumstances, is held at the end of the season in May. Everybody agreed that we had all done well to keep the club going for the whole of the 2020/21 season, with a full schedule of meetings held online using zoom. These had proved popular and, while we missed meeting in person and socialising, it was a very successful year. We couldn’t have done it without the hard work of the committee but it was the dedicated and loyal core membership sticking with us that enabled the club to keep going. Whilst most club members were keen to get back to meeting in person, there were inevitably some who had concerns about returning while the COVID rates are still high. Like many other camera clubs, we are therefore looking at ways of holding hybrid meetings, where we get together at the usual venue but also give people the opportunity to participate at home on Zoom. We have come up with a system that we think will work and we are about to try it out at a proper competition meeting. One problem with this newsletter is that it is written around four weeks before it is published, to meet the deadlines for printing and distribution, so it can never be completely up to date. We suggest that, before coming to the club for the first time, you check our website: www.seafordps.org. The home page is always kept up to date with details of the next meeting. You can also contact us by email via the Contact button at the bottom of the page. Immediately following the AGM we handed out the awards for the 2020/21 season. Well done to Jack Taylor and Simon Watkin, who each collected a trophy, and to Colin Mitchell who picked up two, including Photographer of the Year in the Advanced Group. AnnaMarie Armstrong was awarded three trophies including Photographer of the Year in the Standard Group. She will be going up to the Advanced Group this year, along with Simon Rigby. Trees for Butterflies (...verges for butterflies) If you were doing the Big Butterfly Count in the Summer, you’ve probably kept your eyes down to count butterflies flitting on the pollinator plants in your garden or local green spaces. However there are a group of butterflies, that you won’t find on the spotting sheet, and are highly unlikely to see at ground level. Arboreal creatures are those that live in trees, and there are some wonderful butterflies that spend almost their whole lives at the top of trees. Each species has its own favourite tree, and won’t survive anywhere else. The most stunning of these is probably the magnificent Purple Emperor butterfly. I was lucky enough this year to see some of these majestic creatures at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex, where a sizeable colony has built up, strutting about in selected Oak trees of this glorious rewilded estate. These large butterflies also rely on nearby Willow trees for their caterpillar foodplants. In Seaford the most notable high flyer is the White-letter Hairstreak (photo left). This butterfly relies on Elm trees and sadly many have been lost in Seaford to Dutch Elm disease. Trees for Seaford have been replanting disease resistant Elms all around town, but it takes time for trees to grow large enough to support and encourage colonies of butterflies. The hairstreaks do seem to have adapted by breeding on younger Elm suckers. This has not been a great year for the hairstreaks, and other butterflies. Cold and wet weather, combined with the loss of more Elms, means the population is only just holding its own. The butterflies are fairly small, and look black in silhouette from the ground. Fiercely territorial, they sit at the edge of branches, and will often attack bees and other insects that come near. They may occasionally come down to ground level to feed, in which case you may notice the unmistakeable white W shaped streak on the underside of the wing. Another butterfly you might spot is the purple hairstreak (photo top), which lives at the top of Oak trees. Though a similar size, this one appears from below as a silvery grey butterfly with a white streak and orange eye spot.
8
If you do spot any of these butterflies, it is worth recording these so that populations can be monitored (for example using iRecord). The volunteer groups Trees for Seaford and On the Verge in partnership with Seaford Environmental Alliance have been working hard together to promote and encourage a wilder Seaford, with greater diversity in gardens and green spaces. Where grass has been allowed to grow longer, and flowers have been allowed to bloom on roadsides, butterflies and other creatures have started to return. In the sunken fields in College Road, Common Blue butterflies bask on bird’s foot trefoil. On the corner by Southdown Road, Meadow Brown butterflies and Gatekeepers enjoy the longer grass meadows. Along Alfriston road, the Garlic Mustard was allowed to flower, encouraging a delightful succession of Orangetip butterflies (photo left). Greenveined whites (photo right), spotted in the Brickfields enjoy similar food plants of Cuckoo flower and Garlic Mustard. ‘The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.’ – Nelson Henderson We plant trees though we will not live long enough to sit under them. I’d like to think that if we keep planting those trees, one day future generations in Seaford will be watching Purple Emperors duelling in the tree tops of our ancient Oaks. How wonderful that would be. Do get in touch if you would like to get involved in one of these groups. Many thanks to Bob Eade for his assistance with this article and the stunning photographs. https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com

C RY P T GALLERY It’s the final quarter of 2021. Despite lockdowns, a summer of sun and storms, and then weeks of getting up at 2am to watch the Olympics, the year has flown by and creativity has never stopped.
The Crypt has got back into its routine of exhibitions and special events for everyone in the area and October brings more to see and listen to. Richard K Potter is still in the Flint Gallery for the first three days of the month with colour-drenched paintings of British birds, landscapes and other works. Then, until 10th October, The Tide Mills Project people take over the gallery to celebrate the ambitious and spectacular celebration of Tide Mills which took place last month. The exhibition will feature sculptures, films, soundscapes and other material from the event, all under the roof of the Crypt Gallery. The annual LitFest held at the gallery was pushed from pillar to post by COVID restrictions, but it is here at last. The first date in this month’s diary is 15th October with local writer and academic Nicholas Royle in conversation with Peter Boxall about his new work in progress with the interesting working title: My Life with David Bowie, Enid Blyton and Her Lover. The book is set in the time of the pandemic – the challenges of daily life with a young family in Seaford – but then it opens up onto the past, in particular through the music and life of David Bowie and the books and life of Enid Blyton. The second LitFest event takes place at 3pm on 23rd October when the Crypt Gallery welcomes the first appearance by Julie’s Art of Noise with a unique musical offering. And lastly for this month, acclaimed poets Janet
12
Sutherland and Alex Josephy are welcomed to the Crypt Gallery once more. Janet Sutherland will be reading from her fourth collection Home Farm – ’there is a tact, a tender truthfulness, that leaves language alone and lets everything touched on speak for itself ’ (Gillian Allnutt), whilst Alex will be reading from her latest collection Naked Since Faversham – ‘what a pleasure... Alex Josephy has managed to be tender and witty and revelatory’ (Jane Kirwan). The audience will also be privileged to hear Janet and Alex reading some of their most recent work. Tickets are just £5 each for all these events and are available through Eventbrite. Just go to the individual events on the Crypt’s What’s On page, thecryptgallery. com/whats-on, and click on the Eventbrite link to take you straight there. Meanwhile, from 16th to 21st October, Alicia TolhurstBrown will be debuting at the Crypt in the Cuckmere Room with intensely vibrant paintings inspired by what’s around us. Alicia has always lived by the coast in Seaford and has learned to appreciate the ocean’s many moods: the exhilarating high energy of a crashing wave and those soft late afternoons when the sea is like silk as it greets the warmth of the evening sun. And when not by the sea she is indulging in the country’s heritage and mystery, all of which is reflected in her work.
The Crypt Website The website is still on a journey with more and more information being added to the history of the undercroft as new documents are being unearthed and specialists visit to examine the historical building. Take a look on thecryptgallery.com/history. We remain eager to receive your contributions to our Creative Showcase so please send them in. All the details are just a click away on thecryptgallery.com/creativityshowcase. If you’d like to get in touch with us, our email address is get.info@thecryptgallery.com. Who’s Who in Seaford?
Hayden Roberts, Seaford Youth Forum Member Hayden is 15 years old and has been a member of Seaford Youth Forum for over two years. He is also an elected member of the East Sussex Youth Cabinet and he’s co-lead for the Inspect and Advice Group at East Sussex Community Voice which looks at mental health facilities in schools. He is also on the Youth Advisory Board for P 1-54, a not-for-profit organisation that works with young people. Hayden is about to start a new role co-leading a project run by ESCV about mental health and self-harm, gathering young people’s views and experiences. Hayden attends Seaford Head School and has two pet hamsters, Lala and Gizmo. What is the Seaford Youth Forum? The Seaford Youth Forum is a small group, aged 11-18, that meet up every Tuesday to act as a voice for the young people of Seaford. We campaign and raise money for charities and things in the town, such as the exercise park down at The Salts, and the blue bike racks along the beach. We have just released a new scheme called ‘Use It or Lose It’ which is working with 120 shops across Seaford and the four primary schools, getting pupil’s parents and families shopping locally by earning points and raising money for their primary school. The aim is to encourage people to support our local community, as well as getting pupils to think about what being part of a community means to them. We will soon be holding a ‘Dragons Den’ event to support local youth groups/clubs in Seaford. What do you most enjoy about your position/role? The best thing about all the youth voice work I take part in is meeting lots of brilliant, motivated and like-minded young people, who are really passionate about what they do. The main draw is being able to have a real, significant impact on people’s lives for the better, and being able to bring around real change. I have seen how creative and intelligent young people can be and I really urge companies and businesses to try and engage young
people more, as they can often have new, innovative ideas and approaches. What do you like best about Seaford? It is a really great location with the beach on the South, and Brighton and Eastbourne either side, so there is always somewhere close-by to go. It’s also a very clean town, with a calm atmosphere and lots of nice people. What is your favourite piece of music? Life on Mars by David Bowie. What is your favourite film? Now You See Me. What book are you reading at the moment? Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being surrounded by caring people, living a good life. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Year 7, Karaoke. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford? The Salts, as it’s a good place to meet friends. I would also say Harri Nats café as they do really great cake! What words or phrases do you most overuse? ‘With immense difficulty’ and ‘I hopped two miles once’ (though I did actually hop two miles once!). How do you relax? Listening to music (mainly I like 70’s/80’s, and also musicals, though I do like to try new things). What is the most important lesson life has taught you? What you put into something is what you’ll get out of it, so if you try hard you will succeed. What is the first line of your favourite poem? Bent double, like old beggars under sacks – Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen. How would you spend a million pounds? Lots of Lego, a lifetime supply of Shreddies, give to charity, a Scrooge McDuck swimming pool made of pure Gold, and give some away to my family/friends. Maybe also a hat. What keeps you awake at night? Thinking about things I’ve got to do the next day, hoping I don’t forget to do them. What is your greatest fear? Wednesdays. What is your favourite smell? Opening a box of new shoes. Which person in history would you most like to meet? William Shakespeare. Anything Else? If you would like to get in touch with the youth forum, contact Roger Daw at Rogerashleydaw@ gmail.com. Anyone can join, and if you’d like more information please also feel free to reach out to me at robertsh1@seafordhead.org, and I’d be happy to answer/ discuss any questions you may have.

Seaford u3a News There was an air of anticipation in September as a number of groups started meeting. After a long absence from activity, members were keen to resume normal life as much as they could. Although the number of COVID cases was rising, most of the groups got under way as planned. The coffee morning has re-established itself at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford, on the third Wednesday of each month between 10am and 12 noon. This will be on Wednesday 20th October. This is open to non-members as well as to members and is often the first contact for those who move on to become members. Coffee/tea and light refreshments are on offer and there is a small payment required. Committee members are on hand to introduce non-members and new members to others. A number of new members have joined u3a in recent weeks, which is encouraging and they are made very welcome. There is no need to book to attend the coffee morning – just turn up. The first series of talks at the Downs was also scheduled to start in September. This is in addition to the groups and members can pay at the door or sign up for the series. The first title was Late Tsarist Russia which was given by a member with a particular interest in that period. When this finishes it will be followed by Raphael and his contemporaries – a complete change of discipline which illustrates the wide scope offered by u3a.
The AGM will take place in October. Last year this was carried out entirely by post because of COVID restrictions, and it worked very well. This year the Committee decided to revert to the normal live format and details have been sent to members. To take part in the activities of Seaford u3a (apart from the coffee mornings) it is necessary to become a member. The membership year runs from 1st August to 31st July and the subscription is only £10 per person. Prospective members can join at any stage of the membership year. Some activities have a small extra charge. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Photo: A pre-COVID art group.
Between the groups, the Downs talks and the Tea Parties which will come later, almost all members can find something to appeal to their interests, be it music, art, history, books, science and technology or more light-hearted pursuits such as Scrabble. It had been hoped to re-introduce monthly outings but because of COVID concerns this has not yet been possible. The outings usually involved members travelling by coach to places of interest such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Physic Garden in Chelsea, the Battle of Britain Memorial near Folkestone, a National Trust exhibition at Petworth and many others. Though very popular with the members it is thought that the COVID situation needs to be a little more secure before these will start again.

NEWHAVEN COUNTRY MARKET The Country Market is now open again after a break for August. We are ready for the coming season and we also have some new members selling a different range of goods. It is harvest time and seasonal fruit and vegetables are available to buy. These have been grown by the members of the market. There will also be the usual wide range of stalls including eggs, Indian food and spices, baked goods, and jams and preserves. Textile crafts are also well represented, selling hand-knitted and sewn goods as well as jewellery and handmade cards. The Hillcrest Café, which is well known for its very good food, cooked fresh daily on premises, is now fully operational. During Lockdown the café delivered hot meals to members of the community who were considered vulnerable. The Market is open every Thursday between 10am and 12.30pm at the Hillcrest Community Centre (formerly the Old Boys’ School). The premises offer free parking, disabled access and toilets. Supporting the Country Market and buying directly from the producers helps to reduce food miles and benefits the local community. Come along and see us. You will be very welcome. Christmas will be upon us before we realise. We have chosen 9th December as the date for our special market. So, put the date in your diary now to avoid disappointment. The Market is a branch of the national organisation Country Markets Plc based in Chesterfield. These regional markets promote locally baked, locally grown and locally crafted produce. All our food producers have the required standard of food hygiene certificate and the Food Premises Accreditation. If you would like further information contact Jackie on 07434 588503. We look forward to meeting you.

From Edinburgh Fringe to Seaford Little Theatre SwanWing Productions had an unusual start – the actors met each other whilst doing play readings over Zoom during lockdown. One of the readings included work by new writer Saskia Wesnigk and the group was so impressed they decided to start rehearsing it over Zoom with a view to staging it after Lockdown. After sell-out shows in the Brighton Fringe, the cast then took the show to Edinburgh and were overwhelmed with positive reviews and capacity audiences. Saskia wrote Love in the Time of Lockdown during February 2021 and it features a series of sketches that are a combination of hilarious, raunchy and moving. Together with Saskia the cast includes Seaford actor Jon Terry, Claire
Coul, Gillian Fischer, Martina Greenwood and Olivia Post. Love in the Time of Lockdown is being performed at Seaford Little Theatre on 22nd, 23rd and 24th October 2021, with matinee performances on 23rd and 24th October and evening performances on 22nd and 23rd October. Tickets are available online or from the Tourist Information Centre, Church Street, Seaford. Photos from top: Olivia Post and Jon Terry; Martina Greenwood.

Seaford Youth Forum
USE IT OR LOSE IT
The money-raising aspect of the Youth Forum’s scheme is now completed. One hundred and twelve shops and businesses signed up so, in September, we will have presented each of our four Primary schools with a cheque for £280. Do continue to use your cards in the shops until June 2022 when we will present a trophy to the winning school. The Forum’s task now is to promote the ‘keep it local’ idea and to highlight our 112 shops. A constant message from some of our shopkeepers is that they are tucked away and unknown to many, so let’s start around the fringes and, while the sun shines, where better than the seafront. There is a range of gifts at both INLE and Kate’s Cabin and always the temptation of a Holy Cow ice cream. No shortage of refreshments either with Frankie’s Café
and Pappacino’s three outlets – at the Sailing Club, adjacent to the Martello Tower, and on the Salts. Further out, passing Sutton Corner Garage, we have Dymock Farm Shop, in Walmer Rd Walmer Welcome and, on Lexden Drive, Lexden Fish And Chips and Candy Box. At the other end of town, on the Claremont Rd parade, we’ve been supported by Angie’s News, R And H Fish Bar, Crowning Glory, and Not Just Poodles. Some of our shops suffer from being at the more remote part of streets. Take Sutton Rd for example. Beyond the bustle of Burt’s Bakery we come to the in-town G F Sinclair’s, (a great example of a multi-generational family business), Biker Bits, Seaside Vape and Skate, and Iron Lady. At the ‘off the beaten track’ end of Claremont road we find the Hyundai Garage, V R Flower’s Furniture Store, New Dynasty, and the Dog Hut. An eclectic mix! Sadly some are suffering from the Talland Parade nightmare but do look out for the Barber’s Chair, Haven Therapies and Autism Sussex. Let’s finish this month in Place Lane with Hay’s Travel, the Secret Wardrobe, Absolute Beauty and Fonetastic, and on Station Approach with Fixed In A Flash and Brian’s Newsagents where I arrive every morning with my Chyngton School card! Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key
Business as usual, but from a safe distance
If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Blackthorn bushes. My grandad was convinced that the finest fruits were located high on the hedge. And the best sloes made the best sloe gin.
Sloes
From up there, it felt like I could see the whole world: the Oak trees adorned in summer’s fading leaves, the fields at harvest, the city far in the distance. Each October, my grandad would load me and a bucket into Betsy, his faithful 1963 Ford Anglia. Together we’d cruise the county’s back roads. Every few miles he would ease Betsy to a halt and inspect the landscape until finally declaring ‘this is the place.’ My bucket and I would be hoisted high up on his shoulders and from there I’d get my grandad-stand view of the world. More importantly though, it’d put me within reach of the treasure. The jewels we sought on our expeditions were sloes, the round, purple-black berries that bedecked the
Each spring, the Blackthorn hedges bloom; their brilliant white flowers creating snow-white drifts against the woodlands and along our roadsides. These ephemeral petals soon fall and the Blackthorn becomes cloaked in small, oval leaves, capturing the energy that powers production of the sloes. A Blackthorn bush is a prickly character and as approachable as an enraged porcupine. Each twig is armed with spikes, which deter cattle and grandads from helping themselves to its leaves and berries. This spiny spinney fortress also safeguards a wealth of wildlife. Nightingales, Turtle Doves and other birds nest under its protection, and the elusive Brown Hairstreak butterfly lays its miniature sea urchin-like eggs on the bush’s black bark. Many years after my grandad and Betsy had departed, I decided to honour them both and concoct my own sloe gin. I found an online recipe and, in what was and still remains one of the biggest disappointments of my adult life, I discovered that the main ingredient in sloe gin…was gin. After watching my grandad making his moonshine I had genuinely believed that by submerging a load of sloes in a bottle you would magically turn water into gin. It seems my Grandad couldn’t perform miracles. Indeed, looking back, our hedgerow pillaging raids could easily be dismissed as forced child labour. Was he exploiting me and my tiny hands to bypass those thorns and reach the best berries? A few decades earlier he’d probably have sent me down a mine or up a chimney. But my grandad wasn’t some Fagin-like character. Now I think of it, I never once saw him actually drinking any of his sloe gin. Perhaps just being out in the countryside in the autumn sunshine, on an adventure with Betsy and his grandson, was the truly intoxicating ingredient. The Future We Choose:
Surviving the Climate Crisis By Christina Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac (Manilla Press 2020) The Future We Choose is a really encouraging book. It’s easy to end up feeling angry and depressed reading about the climate crisis – the focus is often on problems rather than solutions, there is so much to do it seems overwhelming, and current approaches look like too little too late. To counter this, The Future We Choose has an inspiring vision – • The year is 2050 • The world is breathing (not on fire) • The air is fresh (not polluted), • Nature is thriving, • Entire populations have a better quality of life. It also has a very positive focus on the future. The authors suggest that we should look forward, not back (recognising we are where we are), be open to change (we won’t be able to reduce emissions without substantial change), and see ourselves as citizens not just consumers (focusing more on what makes a good life than consumer goods). They stress that many of the changes we need to make will improve the quality of our lives (think ending pollution and supporting biodiversity through caring for nature) as much as they challenge the way we live now. The actions they suggest are a mix of those things we can do as families, employees and individuals, and the things we need to lobby our local and national governments to do. They come under six headings – some familiar and others less so: • •
Moving beyond fossil fuels Reforesting the earth
• • • •
Investing in a clean economy Using technology responsibly Building gender equality Engaging in politics.
Investing in a clean economy is an interesting topic. It looks remote – for governments and international organisations to sort out – but actually it is something many of us can have an impact on. Most of us use banks or building societies, and some of us are lucky enough to receive (or contribute to) pensions. Where our banks and pensions providers decide to invest our money can either support reducing CO² emissions or make the situation worse. There are a number of campaigns which can help with this. It is worth looking at makemymoneymatter.co.uk. £2.6 trillion are invested in UK pensions funds. This site shows how we can influence how this money is invested so that it supports sustainability. And locally there is a campaign to encourage East Sussex County Council Pension Scheme to stop investing in fossil fuels (see https://divesteassussex.wordpress.com). The Future We Choose is a great book to read. The authors know their subject – Christina Figures was the UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change, and she and Tom Rivett-Carnac played a significant part in achieving the Paris Agreement in 2015. One criticism might be that it doesn’t take enough account of the fact that, for most of us, working, bringing up our families and making ends meet takes most of our time and energy, but it’s still well worth reading because it is both inspiring and it gives advice on how to take a step-by-step approach to reducing our impact on the climate. (There is a copy of The Future We Choose in East Sussex Libraries.) Anne Fletcher

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford £264 was raised for St Wilfrid’s Hospital, President Eileen Young’s Chosen Charity, by Inner Wheel members volunteering at the Support our Seaford Charities event on the Martello Fields on 5th September. Guess the name of the lion, a children’s lucky dip and a stall of ‘nearly new items’ all contributed to the fundraising efforts on the day. In addition to raising funds and promoting the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford, the charity stall which was, as with all charity stalls at the event, provided free of charge accommodated a display of the work of the Beachy Head Chaplaincy. Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford were delighted to display their new banner including two logos of Inner Wheel Club. This wheel, is universally seen as a symbol of Progress. It represents movement, mobility, change, action, time, unity, completeness, justice and perfection. The circular motion of the wheel as a symbol of International Inner Wheel depicts continuous ‘service’ and ever-expanding ‘friendship’. The Inner Wheel logo consists of two gear wheels, one inside the other, with six spokes radiating outward from the centre hub. The outside teeth represent clubs around the world. The six spokes represent officers and service committees. The dot in the middle is the individual member who is most crucial to the movement. The Museum re-awakens! Life in Seaford was returning to something closer to normality in early September with the Mayor’s Charity Initiative Day. Beneath beautiful blue skies and soaring temperatures our brave quartet of volunteer trustees Clem, Sally, Judith and Viv dressed in period costume to represent the Museum at this splendid event; as the day grew hotter, they might have regretted this! As well as selling booklets and mementos of the Museum, we also brought along a few children’s games for the youngsters to enjoy, such as an antique bagatelle table and a cup-and-ball game. In response to a visitor enquiry, we can now say that the cup-and-ball game seems to have originated some time in the fourteenth century in Europe, and possibly much earlier than that in North America. We also displayed the laundry requirements of a nineteenth-century housewife, including a washboard and washing dolly – incomprehensible to our younger visitors! They were astonished at the weight of the iron as well. The Museum is looking forward to reinstating our programme of monthly talks in 2022 and completing the return of all the ‘hands-on’ exhibits for Museum visitors with some exciting new features and exhibits. At the same time, we’re looking back at the installation of two of our most popular exhibits. In late 1991, the model of Seaford Station as it was in 1922 was nearing completion thanks to Ken Rolley, Ken Haysom, Paul Levesley, Alan Jones, Frank Barksfield and others. The model has been a source of interest and fascination for

children and enthusiasts for many years and was created by members of the Newhaven & District Model Railway Club, who still maintain it. The model is over four metres long and shows the old turntable (some people think that’s why Rowland Gorringe’s estate agent is round), the redbrick goods shed which burned down in 1980 and the extensive goods yard which has been replaced by the St Crispian’s housing estate. Also making its debut in 1991 was the Seaford Head Navigational Beacon, which had been providing a navigation signal for air traffic on Seaford Head since 1960. The Marconi VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Radio-range) emitted a pattern of radio signals which were received by the aircraft, and a compass dial on the aircraft’s instrument panel showed the bearing of the aircraft from the beacon. It was replaced by a new, fully automatic installation in 1990, and the original beacon was donated to the Museum by the Civil Air Authority. Once in the Museum, the beacon was exhibited on the lower floor, together with a voice recording of Air Traffic Control conversations – where it has been playing ever since! After nearly two years of disruption – including the almost complete cancellation of the Museum’s 50th year celebrations in 2020 – Chairman Jane Keel commented: ‘The post-COVID situation can only improve in 2022, and we are determined to have a full programme of events and entertainment through the year. So thank you to all our loyal members, supporters and volunteers who have helped us through these difficult times.’ Photo: Clem, Sally, Judith and Viv in costume. NGS Seaford Gardens trails The NGS Seaford Gardens trails this year were a great success with over 425 visitors visiting some or all of the gardens. The weather was fine and the garden owners did an amazing job of getting their gardens looking beautiful after a month of drought in April. An added festive feel was created by the Seaford Strummers performing outside the Community Garden of the Crouch. Both trails raised £3,200 for NGS (all proceeds to the nursing charities supported by NGS) and a further £600 was raised for other charities from teas and plant sales. The trails happened as Lockdown restrictions were being lifted, and visitors really appreciated being out and about in the gardens and feeling safe. We are so lucky in Seaford that so many fine gardens volunteer to take part in the trails each year. If you have a garden that you would like to open for NGS contact Aideen Jones at: sweetpeasa52@gmail.com. The garden owners would like to thank all the wonderful people who visited and contributed to another very successful year and look forward to welcoming you back in 2022.

The highlight of the year will be the main Horticultural Show on Saturday 6th August 2022. The 2020 and 2021 shows were cancelled due to COVID restrictions, so we are hoping to put on a bumper show in 2022. Nonmembers are of course very welcome to view the show, but the majority of classes are for members only, so if
you are keen to show off your plants and produce, why not become a member (contact Chair Sara on 07885 406576).

Ready...Steady...Seaford and District Horticultural Society is raring to Go, and eager to welcome members old and new. Social evenings are back, a couple of coach outings have already taken place and the Committee is eagerly planning a packed programme of activities for next year.
Edible Berries
Berries are superfoods and popular in the modern diet, so what could be better than picking your own? Raspberries – canes can be planted in the autumn; they need fertile, neutral or very slightly acid soil, and a sunny, sheltered site. If you have the space, grow both summer and autumn varieties for continuity of crop. Strawberries – also require good, well-drained soil in the sun, but unlike raspberries they can be grown in pots. Plant young plants late summer to autumn in 50:50 John Innes No.2 and multi-purpose compost. Give plenty of drainage, and shelter over the winter in good light for a better start. Keep pots well watered in the growing season. Blueberries – acid soil is vital, if you don’t have it you will need to grow compact varieties in large tubs or pots. Plant in spring using 50:50 John Innes and peat-free ericaceous composts plus a little grit. Put mycorrhizal fungi into the planting hole and use only rainwater to ensure success. Planting more than one variety will give a good crop through cross pollination.

Driftwood Garden Seaford garden owner and Chair of Driftwood Fundraising Group, Geoff Stonebanks, is celebrating, along with his amazing group of trail garden owners, volunteers and many visitors. This year, despite the weather and the impact of the pandemic, he has been able to hand over £12,868 to Macmillan Cancer Support, £8,281 from the trail he single-handedly organises and £4,857 from events in his own garden Driftwood, along with a further £1,864 to the National Garden Scheme. A grand total of £14,722 raised in 2021. He has seen almost 700 visitors and raised the money through charging an entrance fee which, includes a talk by him about the garden’s creation, many of whom visited through the Gardeners’ World Magazine 2 for1 offer. Needless to say, many purchased Geoff ’s infamous tea and cakes when visiting, which helped boost the
fundraising. Geoff said:‘This year I have baked almost 600 portions of cake to sell in the garden, with cappuccino cake being the firm favourite.’ Macmillan in the South East posted on social media: ‘We can’t thank you enough for all your support! This is the most amazing amount raised.Your generosity means we can do more for all people with cancer. Best wishes, Abby.’ The main charity social media posted: ‘Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for your continued support. Dale’. The main highlight however for Geoff is that this years’ fundraising for Macmillan has taken his running total, since 2012, to an unbelievable £98,000 (see photo). Geoff said: ‘Whilst I’ll claim full credit as the person creating the means by which the money can be raised, it is a great team effort from all the many garden owners on the trail over the years and the many supporters, visitors and volunteers. I have been blown away by several large donations made to me at Driftwood this summer, totalling almost £1,000. Thank you all, we’ll do it all again in 2022.’ Geoff also added that the grand total of all monies he has raised for all charities since 2009 has now topped £152,400. In The Glory of the Garden Patience Strong described September as ‘the month of maturity; the heaped basket and the garnered leaf… the month of climax and completion… I never tire of turning it over and over in my mind. It has warmth, depth and colour. It glows like old amber.’ Had she not written that way back in 1951 we might have thought that she had visited our garden at the Crouch last month. For it was a place of bright but mellow colour and fruitfulness, with egg-yolk yellow flowers we think may be helenianthus competing with budding and blooming roses along with autumnal berries such as the blackening ones of a hypericum. The volunteer team had no chance to admire the garden they have created, however, because all green fingers were required for picking, to keep pace with ripened tomatoes, runner beans, cucumbers, raspberries… all on sale at the gate for eager buyers. Inside the polytunnel cucumber Mini Munch was still producing long and plump specimens, causing Allison to comment: ‘They don’t seem to know they are supposed to be mini.’ Still growing and growing like Topsy were the most enormous beef tomatoes, while outside kale was doing well again with small-gauge white netting keeping out cabbage white intruders; fine beans planted five weeks beforehand, two to a hole, had grown so well that Phil was considering small sticks for support. Herbsman Bob’s blue hyssop – once used as a purge, but good
with fish and chicken, he said – has grown so prolifically that it needs to be split and may be shared with a nearby raised bed. Bob, meanwhile, has taken seeds from it so watch out for seedlings on sale at some point. At the time of writing we have had a dry spell so Abdul’s morning was taken up with watering, leaving Allison to cut back lavender and bunch it for selling on the sales table after which it can be hung upside down to dry. Best of all, insects appeared to be in heaven, with bees hard at work everywhere and a lot of activity around a wasps’ nest, barricaded for their own, visitor and volunteer safety by a couple of chairs – the only unattractive items in our otherwise beautiful autumn garden. Visit it on Wednesday mornings and enjoy it with us. The Garden Team Photos from top clockwise: Veronica weighs up tomatoes; Figs ripening nicely against their sunny but sheltering brick wall; Bees love Verbena bonariensis; Allison adds runner beans to polytunnel – grown cucumbers Mini Munch; Fruits of the harvest to sell at the gate; Autumn gold with these bright blooms.

Lockdown Bears Although Joy Ashton and her Southern Stomp Line dancers haven’t been dancing for the last 18 months, the grass has not been growing under her feet. Using scraps of felt and sewing needles, she has produced over 80 Christmas bears to hang on your Christmas tree, all proceeds going to a very good local cause, the Community Foodbank and Supermarket.
of the local foodbank which is available for individuals and families to come along every week and choose a selection of foods and toiletries. There are no specific charges for anything that is selected; this type of provision is Pay as you Feel, and it is entirely up to the individual. We know that some weeks money has to be prioritised for household bills, but there are always plenty of foodstuffs for people to help themselves to there and all of the food is used rather than wasted – so it’s a real win-win situation! A new addition this month has been the recycling of school uniforms, which means that uniforms that have become too small were washed, pressed and now available and ready for a new term at school!
All bears are individually made with loving care including the popular Rupert Bear and Paddington; with the bears having raised £200 so far, which will be used to buy extra Christmas treats and gifts for the local charity, things are looking really positive for Christmas this year.
Although Southern Stomp are back dancing and busily preparing for a new 2 Left Feet beginners class, Joy is keen to continue her volunteering work in the local community and really enjoys her new weekly role; so now you know, when she finishes dancing each week, she puts her feet up and gets her sewing kit out!
During Lockdown Joy has been volunteering at the newly opened Community Supermarket, an extension
To buy a bear and support the community foodbank, please phone Joy on 01283 587714.

What is dementia? The word ‘dementia’ describes symptoms that may initially show in mood changes. The symptoms often include difficulties with thinking, language, day-to-day memory, planning and orientation. Yet it is the manner in which the symptoms become apparent, and more obvious to friends and families of sufferers, that make this such a difficult and emotionally trying disease. In fact, one of the best definitions we have come across to the describe the illness is one where the sufferer may have no idea that they are unwell. Imagine being confronted by someone in your home who is claiming, however gently and empathetically, that they are there to give you a bath. Your confusion at this event, even if you cannot remember that the same thing occurred the day before, and the day before that, may swiftly turn to exasperation or even anger at the ridiculous idea that someone should be here to bathe you. Yet you may not have been aware that perhaps you’ve been unable to look after yourself quite as well lately. You’re forgetting your meals, or having issues cooking on your old kitchen, and beginning to lose weight, and forgetting your medication because that used to be taken after dinner, and you haven’t been out in a while, or caught up with concerned family, and so on. So how do you give someone a bath when they don’t even recognise that they need help with this previously straightforward part of their day? By gaining their consent, their real consent, through communicating the idea of a rewarding rest in warm water and a cosy environment or freshening up in the shower so that the reward becomes their idea, their goal, we can then assist them to achieve another positive in their day. At Clifden House we negotiate this learning and relearning with each individual in many different
78
areas, perhaps several times a day. This requires special patience and fortitude from our carers. We care deeply about our residents and have specific training to help them with their needs, whatever they might be. Initially you may see that the person is withdrawn, anxious or unusually sad. This may start off in small ways and grow over time to become more noticeable. With some types of dementia, the person may also suffer from visual hallucinations or become delusional. We take an individual approach to each resident, working alongside families to find out things they liked doing, and all our staff are fully trained in managing symptoms. Often, this can be as simple as taking the time to sit with a resident and talking to them about their day, in order to open up all and any lines of communication at a time when communicating previously straightforward thoughts and emotions has become complicated, difficult and frustrating. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club It was lovely to see so many members attend the first meeting of the Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club on Friday 3rd September. There was a buzz in the room as everyone caught up with people they had not seen for many months. Our talk was by a member on The Coastguard Cottages. Des has a long association with the cottages as his grandfather purchased one when the coastguards closed the site down. He lived in the cottage for many years and now his son and grandchildren use it. He was very knowledgeable about the history and, along with the slides of the area, everyone was very enthralled. Another of our members, Anne, read out an article that Des has found from a boy who had been born in the Shoreham coastguard cottages and whose father was transferred to the Seaford coastguard cottages just before the Second World War. The article was very interesting, showing a boy’s memories of living in the cottages during and after the war. Tea was served and the raffle was drawn before everyone went home. Muriel has organised an outing for 17th September, and several members put their names down to go on the trip. On Sunday 5th September the Club had a stall at the Martello Field which was arranged by the Mayor to support charities in Seaford. The sun shone and people came along and enjoyed themselves. Thanks must go the the Rotary and NP&S Lions clubs for helping the day go so smoothly. Our next meeting is on Friday 1st October, and if anyone would like to come along and visit us we would be pleased to see them. Either turn up at St James’, Blatchington Road, Seaford or ring the secretary Pauline if you want to know more about the Club. Transport can be arranged to and from the meeting as we are lucky enough to have the use of the NP&S Lions minibus. The lip-reading classes will start again at the beginning of November should anyone wish to attend the lessons. We are a friendly, social club and we would be pleased to see you. Pauline White Secretary

Seaford Rotary Seaford Rotary members turned out for the UK South Coast Triathlon and Half-marathon weekend on 21st and 22nd August – not to compete in this lung-busting event, but to manage the parking of the competitors’ cars in Martello Fields. It may be a less than athletic duty, but is not always straightforward. The triathlon looks a tough challenge, but this year must have been the most successful ever to be held, with maybe the possible exception when we once filled both Martello fields with vehicles until no blade of grass was visible. Whoever suggested that the organisers, UK Triathlon Ltd., ask us, as a club, to take charge of the parking of the visitors’ vehicles and charge them for the privilege, deserves the utmost admiration. We set the parking donation fee per car (it has been the same for many years) and keep the donations collected. Even so, the generosity shown to us – including a free cooked breakfast for all helpers – is a major boost. They love Seaford as a venue for their races and the donations collected during the two days’ parking this year was a huge windfall. After a tough year, we need every possible boost to our coffers because we know how to make good use of it – to the benefit of our local charitable causes. So, let us not kid ourselves, we do it for the donations – smile at the drivers, greet them warmly, show an interest, guide them gently into the allotted spaces. Yet come to think of it, all that is a wonderful pleasure. The Rotary teams worked in two-hour shifts, enjoying lively banter and camaraderie. Many have said it is one of their favourite Rotary events. You must have the humour, a little patience – and enthusiasm. And not just because the early birds must be up, in position and paying attention soon after silly o’clock. About 7am the first dribble of competitors arrives at Martello West field, taking the prime positions at the front before jumping out and going to sign in at the Registration Tent on the far side of the East field.

Gradually it builds into a procession – and the occasional confusion. There are collectors, weighed down by the coins dropped into a skirt-cum-bag around their waists, and there are parkers, always on the move. One or two members are so keen they can get carried away, not only collecting the money from the drivers but then also pointing to where they can park – forgetting that the designated parkers have already pointed the other way! It all gets sorted out with a laugh. Many of the competitors have waited a long time to do this event; the last triathlon was in 2018. Thanks to the pandemic the 2020 races were cancelled, and in 2019 the South Coast Triathlon on the Saturday was cancelled due to high winds and rough seas, although the half-marathon took place. No doubt the entrants were inspired by the success of GB athletes in the Tokyo Olympics and were eager to start. They came in their hundreds and soon we knew we were going to fill the West Field. We then had to find a way to unlock the East Field gate for the overflow. Luckily the omnipresent Rotarian Dave Argent appeared with a key – and the required code number for the lock. It was said that just 125 cars were in the West Field on Sunday for the half-marathon, but it looked a lot more to those of us who parked them. With some giving more than the stated donation saying, ‘Keep the change for your charity,’ and the odd few claiming ‘we don’t carry cash’ (We let them in anyway) it was impossible to accurately count how much we collected. No matter. As the team of parkers agreed: ‘The people who come for this event are always so cheerful and friendly. The pleasure is always ours.’ Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. Trick or Treat – Five Ways to Avoid a Home of Horrors In this Halloween-themed article, we look at five ghastly things you want to avoid when selling your home. This infamous five will have prospective buyers fleeing your property as quickly as if they bumped into Frankenstein coming out of your bathroom! But fear not as we have some simple fixes for these petrifying problems.
Stephen Newberry
1) Smell Hell – Whether it’s an unchanged cat litter, fish in a bin, damp used towels in the laundry basket or simply stale air, bad smells put people off quicker than almost anything else.
4)
TREAT: Open the windows before viewings, clean up all the above and, if cooking is your thing, bake some bread or make some fresh coffee. 2) DIY Doom – Buyers don’t want to inherit your doomed Do it Yourself projects.
TREAT: Fix those niggly little things that you
haven’t got around to.
3)
Weird Walls – If your choice of wall colours
is a bit ‘out there’ it may put buyers off. Some people don’t have the imagination to see what the place would be like with a new colour scheme more to their taste.
TREAT: Consider changing it to something neutral.
Andrew Tully
Messy Monsters – We know you’re busy, and if the kids are small, there is bound to be some mess. We understand and sympathise with you, but many buyers don’t. General untidiness has people spinning on their heels. TREAT: Simple, tidy up before every viewing.
5) Garden Ghouls – An unkempt garden will scare away people. Especially the front garden, which is the buyers first physical view of the property if they spotted the home online.
TREAT: Mow the lawns, tidy away garden clutter and jet wash patios.
Use our treats to turn your property from a potential house of horrors to a must-have home. Thanks for reading.

Criers descend on Sussex On 16th October the National Town Criers Championship will be held in Hastings Old Town. It’s the 68th time this title will be contested at Hastings, and Seaford will be represented. Seaford’s Crier who has been crying since 1972 and been the town’s official ‘messenger’ since 1977, will be competing for the 32nd time – a national record. The contest started in 1912 when Billy Law, Crier of Horsham, challenged other criers nationwide to a contest. Held in Devizes, Billy won it! The Daily Express sponsored it, and then from 1947 the News of the World paid for the event and awarded the current trophy. It has been held at Hastings since 1952, with Hastings Council running it, except for five years when a Councillor took it on personally to save it from folding. This year it moves from the town’s Shopping Mall into the Old Town, under the direction of Hastings’ Crier Jon Bartholomew. When Peter White first shouted for Seaford in the 1980s there were 60+ criers in the August sunshine, with lavish hospitality and accommodation for Criers and partners, a band played and stars of the Summer Show such as the Bachelors and Nolan Sisters were the Judges. Now held in October the numbers are down to 20-ish and austerity has limited the frills! The current Crier to watch is Alistair Chisholm (photo left) from Dorchester, whose 12 victories equal those of legendary Crier Ben Johnson from Fowey. Alistair was also worthy winner of Seaford’s only crying contest, held at the Martello Tower in 2016. Peter White has the distinction of having come last, but he also made 3rd place in 2010. When presented with his 3rd prize he was enthusiastically hugged by the Mayor of Hastings, a History Teacher, when she realised
that he had been her History teacher at Newhaven’s Tideway School! Peter is always keen to give his Town Crying talk to local voluntary and social groups, and to vocally advertise town events which are also featured in Seaford Scene. He is the Town Serjeant, carrying Seaford’s historic Town Mace, a gift from Queen Elizabeth 1. Photo from top: l-r Peter White, Seaford’s Town Crier, Cllr. Seaford Little Theatre If Ian McKellen can play Hamlet 50 years after taking the princely Shakespearian role, then a little imaginative casting by Seaford Little Theatre can easily be assimilated. These are strange times indeed, as evidenced by being greeted at the gate by masked ‘gun’ woman Debbie Cox cheerfully aiming a thermometer at theatregoers’ foreheads. Forget ‘the show must go on’ and reflect instead that Mixed Doubles was staged at all. And I for one am so glad it was. Mixed Doubles: An Entertainment On Marriage was a viable choice, allowing bubbled rehearsing owing to its format of monologues and duologues, and getting its audience out of the house and into a theatre again – at last. While the lines offered some food for thought they were often bang-on-themoney funny, and the cast, whose ages did not always quite match those of the players, rose to deliver nuance with an aptly mature inflection as if they were playing youngsters with the wisdom of older years. Five sketches, presented chronologically from wedding ceremony to shared old age, expose the state of marriage through irritation, adultery, boredom and acceptance. Linking single-handers were written pithily by George Melly with James Saunders, Alun Owen, Harold Pinter, John Bowen and David Campton writing the two-handers. That the whole thing works, with the Melly pieces largely done below stage and the sketches on simple sets on stage, is down to the vision of directors Garry Fowler and Sue and David Williams.
90
Standout for me were Trish Richings and Garry Fowler as bride and groom in Saunders’ A Man’s Best Friend, portraying a couple whose marriage had to be doomed from the moment when Richings notices for the first time and comments solicitously on her new husband’s uncontrollable foot-tapping; he meanwhile is fastidiously picking confetti off his suit because he doesn’t want to draw attention to their newly wed status at the honeymoon hotel (photo top). Pinter’s Night (photo left) looks at a couple in early middle age nostalgically remembering the first moments of their romance, each with a different memory. This was nicely done by Wendy Picott and Lee Coleman-Powney. Sue Williams and Alan Lade (photo left) starred in Alun Owen’s Norma, Williams depicting a bored wife who toys with the besotted Lade only to dump him with a jaunty wave rather than a last glance when her husband finds out. Bowen’s Silver Wedding allowed Lesley Drew and Dennis Picott (photo left) to shine as the sketch explores the development of a row from his apology for lateness to her belittling of his career. Of the linking monologues I loved Lade’s The Union Official, playing a man who loses his strength and determination in the face of his domineering wife, and Richings’ cynically pragmatic The Lawyer. Campton’s Resting Place (photo left) was both sensitively and robustly delivered by the splendid Margaret Kennedy and John Hamilton to conclude an entertaining evening. Seaford Little Theatre is back to normal from 3rd to 11th December with the farce The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Production A Christmas Carol, directed by Garry Fowler. Varied programme for Stamp & Post Card Club Our last two meetings have seen the club covering diverse subjects. In July Kevin Dillistone gave a post card presentation of One Hundred Years of Aviation and at our August meeting Nigel Chandler spoke about the postal situation in Germany in the Allied Sectors after World War II. Kevin’s knowledge of the history of flight was well supported by excellent examples of all forms of craft that took to the air from the early days of flight experiments through to today’s supersonic fighters. Heroic aviators flying the Channel, the Atlantic and trans-continental trips to Australia were covered, as where the development of planes during World War I that led to the fighter planes and passenger aircraft we know today. Kevin’s favourite plane of all time? The Douglas DC3 Dakota (photo left). Introduced in the 1930s as a passenger/cargo plane it still flies commercially today (mainly in South America), a close second is the De Havilland Mosquito (photo right). Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito’s use evolved during the war into many roles, including low- to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, highaltitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter/ bomber, and photo reconnaissance aircraft. In August Nigel Chandler came with a selection of covers showing the turmoil in the postage system in Germany after the war. It was supported with items of post cards and postal stationary. It was clear from the members that they were pleased to be taking an active interest in their hobby once
again, and our thanks go to the Seaford and District Constitutional Club for providing the venue for us. Our next meeting on the 13th October (7pm for 7.30pm) will be on the subject of Pitcairn Islands and more. Further details from our club secretary David Manthorpe 01323 492433. Visitors and new members are always welcomed. Photos from top: Douglas DC3; De Havilland Mosquito; Members getting up to date with each other and viewing Nigel’s presitation.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB What a treat it was for all our members on 19th August to hold our first meeting for well over a year. It was good to see everyone again and our members certainly brought a lot of cheer and enthusiasm for the future. We were entertained by Daniel Lopez from Seaford’s recently opened Flowers and Pots Boutique. Daniel showed us how to make a hand tied bouquet, demonstrated other techniques and gave us many hints regarding how to make our own floral arrangements more attractive. The competition was entitled Where in the World, for which we had 10 entries and our members did not disappoint in their interpretations. In a change to our previous schedule, this month on 21st October, we will be presenting trophies and demonstrating Look! No Oasis and Other Techniques.

Seaford Striders’ Mince Pie 10 returns! After a COVID-enforced break, registrations are already stacking up for the Seaford Striders’ popular Mince Pie 10-mile race which takes place on Sunday 5th December at 11am. The Mince Pie 10 is organised by the Striders to raise funds for local charities and the running club itself. Runners are being encouraged to sign up early for the event, which has previously been voted one of the UK’s top-ten races by Runner’s World magazine. The race will be run in accordance with government restrictions in place at the time of the event. This year’s Mince Pie 10 is sponsored by David Jordan Estate

Agents and will be run in support of the WOLO Foundation, which gives practical support to families after receiving a cancer diagnosis. The undulating course is a mixture of four on-road and six off-road miles, taking in the beautiful countryside scenery around Telscombe and Saltdean. The race is open to runners of all abilities aged 17 plus, although the route is unsuitable for wheelchair users. The Mince Pie 10 has an entrant’s limit of just 600 runners, with previous events having sold out by October, so early registration is recommended. Mince Pie race director Nick Farley, said: ‘After more than a year of COVID disruption, we’re delighted to welcome back runners to the Mince Pie 10. Many of our participants return year after year for the fun, festive atmosphere. The race is open to all runners of all abilities – from those wanting to beat their previous times to those running as a team of elves.’ The race starts and finishes at the Peacehaven Leisure Centre at 11am. Runners can sign up online now at https://www.nice-work.org.uk/races/the-mince-pie-10mile. The route will be marshalled by Seaford Striders with plentiful water stations along the route. All finishers will receive a medal, goody bag and, of course, a mince pie. Runners can recover with a sports massage and a tasty treat from the charity cake stall.
We have lots of Gift ideas at the salon, come and see.

THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Hypnotherapy could change YOUR Life The history of hypnotherapy could be written as the development of a new approach for accessing and facilitating the healing. The days of believing the mind and body to be separate are long gone. We now understand that physical and psychological well being are inseparable. ‘Many people still do not understand how hypnotherapy works, says Ray Bull of Hypno-Sense (based in Seaford). ‘They may have seen stage hypnotherapy on TV, which obviously differs greatly from clinical hypnotherapy and how I work. Hypnotherapy utilises a natural altered state to gain access to your inner resources without the conscious mind with its limiting beliefs getting in the way. ‘I can help you make changes in your life, easily, effortlessly and safely – it really is an enjoyable experience which can help you achieve rapid and effective change in your life’ You can quit smoking, which is normally done in one session, lose and control weight, rid yourself of fears and phobias that you may have had for years, like heights, spiders, flying, public speaking and much more. You can also overcome anxiety and become more confident in all areas of your life with one simple relaxing visit. Sports performance can be improved too. Hypnotherapy is unintrusive, insightful, and empowering to the individual. So, if you would like to free yourself of habits, stress, fears and phobias, along with limiting beliefs, and regain your health, focus, self confidence or maybe control your weight then call me now on 07789 071811.

Well, what a red letter day the Mayor’s Charity Initiative was for The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP). No sooner had Chair Julia Hancock and Treasurer Jo Stone set up a game (thank you Sam for the loan of your pirate ship) and displayed a tempting array of donated raffle prizes – together these raised £130.10 – then we heard that Seaford Masonic Lodge was giving us an amazing £500, see photo. With this handsome cheque presented our day got even better when TYCP won the first prize of £250 in the second draw, from Seaford Rotary Club, from Over The Rainbow Walk monies, another event that brought local charities together earlier in the summer.

The Initiative, at Martello Fields on Sunday 5th September, also provided a great opportunity for our Trustees and team to talk about why we need to campaign for cash and to raise awareness. The disturbing fact is that since the start of the pandemic one in five school-age children now needs active support with their mental health, up from one in nine beforehand. This academic year TYCP will be enabling at least 80 students from four of Seaford’s schools to receive counselling from appropriately trained therapists, usually in the form of 10 sessions per individual child, at a cost just short of £500 each. So more huge thanks to Persimmon Homes Charitable Foundation for a generous prize of £1,000. TYCP is also very grateful to be chosen to benefit from the retiring collection after the civic service at the Baptist Church in August, a very useful £399.10.
Quizzes back
Of course TYCP has been unable to hold its popular quizzes for the past 18 months so more good news is that these will restart at The Old Plough in Church Street on Tuesday 12th October. Teams of up to eight will be faced with fiendish but fun questions to raise money for funds. More fundraising dates will be announced as they come up. Photo: £500 cheque from Seaford Masonic Lodge: left to right are Mason John Hardy, the TYCP’s Susie Silvester and Christine McAllen, with Andy Coe, Worshipful Master of Seaford Lodge 2907.

Citizens Advice energy bill rises & Universal Credit cutS New analysis from Citizens Advice shows how rising energy bills will coincide with Universal Credit cuts this autumn, creating a perfect storm for families. The charity’s research is released as Ofgem announces £139 rise in default tariffs and £153 increase for prepayment meter customers. The rise which takes effect in October will hit family budgets just at the same time as the government’s planned cut of £20 a week to Universal Credit, which covers six days’ energy costs for a below average income household, affecting six million homes. It will also coincide with the end of the furlough scheme, which the charity warns could lead to further job losses and more families being pushed onto benefits. The charity’s new analysis shows that nearly 2 million households are already behind on their energy bills, even before the new price rise and planned Universal Credit cut – an increase of around 410,000 from before the pandemic. More than one in four (28%) households in which someone receives Universal Credit are behind on their energy bill. Fuel debt was the most common debt problem so far, the charity says the numbers affected could worsen later this year.
