The Arts in

Beaufort

As a Professional Photographer I have always had an eye for the aesthetic, It kind of goes with the territory, and anyone who has visited Beaufort can see that it is a beautiful place worthy of being immortalized on canvas. There are many places in Beaufort that are perfect visions of beauty, notable and not-so-known spots that would make eye-catching pictures in photography as well as other genres. It’s not surprising that Beaufort itself has an abundance of artists who are ready and able to capture just these views. Since 1957 (over 50 years ago) the Beaufort Art Association has been responsible for bringing and keeping the visual arts alive in Beaufort County, helping to acknowledge local artists and bring their work to the forefront, as well as making all types of visual art available to local art lovers. The Beaufort Art Association (B.A.A.) is known for their workshops, free art classes, showings, and open presentations bringing visual arts and an a understanding and appreciation for the visual arts to the masses. They constantly have programs available to anyone willing and ready to learn and experience art. There are also a good number of galleries to visit in Beaufort carrying the works of local artists such as The Gallery on Bay Street which features original contemporary art. A few famed artists are from right here in Beaufort County. Jonathan Green, the world renowned painter was born and raised right here in St. Helena, S.C. His works have been seen and sold all over the United States and the world. Many of those paintings were inspired by what he saw growing up right here in Beaufort. Visit our local Galleries and see what they have to offer for yourself.

Historically Speaking

Beaufort's Point and Langley Square By Gerhard Spieler

“The Point” (often erroneously called “The Old Point”) is that part of downtown Beaufort located east of New Street and between Bayard Street to the North and Bay Street to the South. In the midst of The Point, as that area is generally known, is a grassy square, bounded North and South by Laurens and King Streets, East and West by Short and Pinckney Streets. Surrounding the grassy square are some of downtown Beaufort’s most prominent antebellum mansions, such as the Paul Hamilton House, the Edward Means, the Berners Barnwell Sams and some lesser known, but just as important, such as the George Mosse Stoney House. In 1967, the two property conveyances, Elizabeth Waterhouse deeded the western half of “Block 6... also known as Langley Square,” to her daughter Elinor Waterhouse Hoyler. The eastern half of The Square, Mrs. Waterhouse deeded to Marguerite Waterhouse Herendeen. Back in 1984, I wrote in an article for The Beaufort Gazette: “For many years, there was an unwritten agreement to maintain the open, grassy square, with its several large, old live oak trees as a play ground for the children of the neighborhood. Now, many Beaufort oldtimers tell tales of their childhood there. Until recently, the city cooperated by maintaining the grounds of the square.”

for an unpaid direct tax” amounting to $26.69. The U.S. Direct Tax Commissioners had appraised the property at $2,000. On Feb. 6, 1866, The Square was sold at public auction to Merit A. Sizer, a northern Union soldier, who sold it the same day, to Reuben C. Holmes, “of the town of Beaufort,” and Franklin Holmes, of the City and State of New York, for $450. In 1870, The Square was acquired by L.S. Langley, then a Beaufort County Auditor. In 2006, I received a letter from Elise Gauyette, of Vermont. “The purpose of my visit (To Penn Center) is to discuss London S. Langley... his life in Vermont and after the war, in Beaufort, and his 1882 burial in Beaufort’s U.S. National Cemetery.” But that is another story.

The Sea Island Scene Magazine would like to pay tribute to Gerhard Speiler, historian and writer who past away last month. Mr. Speiler had been writing the “Historically Speaking” feature in the magazine since 1991. His passion for our local history made each of his contributions a gem of information enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. Our condolences to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

The Point had been taken into Beaufort town as far back as 1809. During the War Between the States, the U.S. Government acquired The Point at a tax sale “for $40

Town of Port Royal The town takes pride in its unique natural environment and its accessibility to that environment through its network of walking trails, community beach, boardwalk, and observation tower. Since Columbus discovered America in 1492, seven flags have flown over what is now the Town of Port Royal.

Union Church The Union Church, also known as, “The Free Church was the first church to be built in the historic town of Port Royal. The land was donated by David F. Appleton and in 1878 cost around $1000 to build. It is currently eligible for recognition in the National Register of Historic Places and is being renovated jointly by both the Town of Port Royal and the Historic Port Royal Foundation. These two groups plan to use the renovated building as a cultural and community center.

Boardwalk Observation Tower At Port Royal Sands Beach you will find a waterside boardwalk leading to an observation tower. This tower provides fantastic views of Port Royal, Parris Island and the surrounding area. For tourists, this is a must see, is free to access and open year-round.

Corn Salad 12 (10 oz each) packs frozen corn, thawed 2 cups diced green pepper 2 cups diced sweet red pepper 2 cups diced celery 1 cup minced fresh parsley 1 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

2 teaspoons ground cumin 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 3/4 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 6 tablespoons lime juice

DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, combine the first 11 ingredients. In a microwave-safe dish, combine oil and garlic. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 30 seconds. Cool. Whisk in lime juice. Pour over corn mixture and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Yield: 16-18 servings.

kiwi, pineapple and blueberries 1/2 cup white sugar 1 pinch salt 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon orange zest

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Slice cookie dough and arrange on greased pizza pan, overlapping edges. Press dough flat into pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow to cool. In a large bowl, soften cream cheese, then fold in the whipped topping. Spread over cooled crust. You can chill for a while at this point, or continue by arranging the fruit. Begin with strawberries, sliced in half. Arrange in a circle around the outside edge. Continue with fruit of your choice, working towards the middle. If bananas are used, dip them in lemon juice so they don’t darken. Then make a sauce to spoon over fruit. In a saucepan, combine sugar, salt, corn starch, orange juice, lemon juice and water. Cook and stir over medium heat. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 or 2 minutes, until thickened. Remove from heat, and add grated orange rind. Allow to cool, but not set up. Spoon over fruit. Chill for two hours, then cut into wedges and serve.

Cabbage Salad White Cabbage Red Cabbage Carrots Onions (Optional)

Balsamic Or Red Vinegar Olive Oil Salt and Black Pepper

DIRECTIONS: Thinly slice or shred cabbage using a knife or a food processor. Grate the carrots. Slice or dice the onions if you are using any. In a bowl mix the ingredients. Add the vinegar and oil, salt and black pepper and mix well. Let the salad set in your fridge for half an hour before serving it to allow for the flavors to mix well, that will give it a better taste.
