Christmas Lowcountry in the

Colored lights line the trees and houses of Beaufort County right now, an illuminating announcement that Christmas is almost here. As the holiday gets closer many of us will be off to the stores buying gifts for our loved ones, others are making lists of the groceries to buy in order to cook holiday dinner for their family. Poinsettias begin to appear on everyone’s front porches and foyers and wreaths adorn nearly every door in town. Beaufort is a town that clearly loves Christmas. Before there were big box stores, the only places to shop were the stores in downtown Beaufort. It was a social time in Beaufort, because everyone who had shopping to do would be on Bay and Carteret Streets. You couldn’t help but run into someone you knew, whether it be from work, church, a social club or your neighborhood, and you all have something in common during that time. You are all out shopping for that special gift for the ones you love. You want to see that look of utter surprise on their face, the look that says “This is the best present ever!” Christmas isn’t about the shopping or the giant discount store sales. Christmas is about giving to the people you love and asking for nothing in return. Whether it be giving up that last piece of pie or ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, Christmas is about giving of yourself and your time, not because you want credit for it but because you want to do it. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
