Love is in the air! It's that time again where we begin making big plans to surprise our special someone on the day of love. It may be a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates or a nice elegant dinner. We always try to think of that special gesture that will make our loved one smile. It might even be that great slice of pizza or delicious sushi. A day dedicated to love gives way to romance and excitement in the month of February. Don't pass up the opportunity to spoil yourselves and loved ones through this valentines day and the whole month of February, and let Sea Island Scene be your guide to the local stores and events that Beaufort has to offer. February 9: Poison Pen Mystery Book Club! Poison Pen Mystery Book Club! For February, we’re reading The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. It is 1866, and young Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: A wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky. Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, The Luminaries is a brilliantly constructed, fiendishly clever ghost story and a gripping pageturner. Enjoy a discussion of mysteries over refreshments. 6 -7 p.m. at the Beaufort Branch Library, 311 Scott St. Event is free. Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta / Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castl, 12:55 pm Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta / Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle— New Production – The Met! 12:55 p.m. On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas. Admission to this performance requires a ticket purchase. Detailed information regarding admission and other programs of the Center for the 2014-2015 season can be found on the Center’s website at www.uscbcenterforthearts. com.
