in the Lowcountry

Summertime in the Lowcountry… and the living is easy… It reminds me of the whole reason I came to the Lowcountry back in the early 70’s–The Beach. My priority was that I had to be somewhere close to the ocean. I was and still am in love with surfing so the sand and waves were essential. Hunting Island has always been an absolutely beautiful beach with a pristine maritime forest lining its shoreline. I recall the first time I took my children at an early age to a Northeastern Beach. Their biggest concern was “What happened to all the trees? There are no trees” Somehow I had to explain that all beaches didn’t have trees like Hunting Island does. A few years ago, Hunting Island was recognized as one of the Top 10 Beaches in the U.S. The State of South Carolina protects the island as a wildlife preserve and maintains a campground as well as the beach recreational areas. Best of all, it’s a great place to put on some suntan lotion, put on your sunglasses, kick back, relax and enjoy the Carolina sunshine. A little further down Highway 21 Fripp Island also offers an uncrowded ocean beach. Although it is a private island, Fripp has homes and villas available for vacation rental or for sale for those who would like to spend a week or more relaxing on the bach or playing golf amidst views of the ocean. Did I mention that the living was easy?

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. - James Dent Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability. - Sam Keen

The Lunch Box Middle class housewife Ila is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that this new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day’s lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery. This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities. Monday June 16th 7:00pm
