s April showers finally fade, the sun is shining, birds singing, and the flowers are starting to bloom, so you know it’s finally May in South Carolina. This month signifies the beginning of a new season across the globe; spring here and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Throughout May we celebrate many occasions and causes, from May Day to Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo and Star Wars Day (both honoring rebellions of a sort), National Military Appreciation Month, and lastly (but certainly not least) Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is when we recognize and attempt to give back in some small way to the women in our lives that carried us, cared for us, and cradled us from well before our births to even now. Since before we could speak the word “mother”, our mothers have served as both protectors and visionaries, steering us towards our better selves, sacrificing in ways both large and small for our well-being. So this Mother’s Day, say a special thanks to your mom for the many times she sat up by your bedside all night when you were sick, for all the meals you never missed, for all the football and baseball games and ballet classes and camping trips and scout meetings she chauffeured you to, for all the cookies she sold on your behalf, for all the times she never let you quit and never quit on you, and for just loving you. Be sure to take a special moment to celebrate her life and her contribution to yours. (And thanks, Mom.)
