May

in the Lowcountry

May is a beautiful month in the lowcountry. The transition from Winter to summer is well underway. The pollen that plagued us and our cars in early spring is gone. And it’s a good time to do most anything. The most significant holiday of the month is Mother’s Day where we all take time to honor the women who put us here and nurtured us for many years. Some lesser known holidays include Oyster Day, May 5. Be sure to check Sea Eagle Market for fresh oysters and all other kinds of fresh seafood. Or if you prefer you can eat oysters overlooking the bay at Saltus or Plums. May is also National Hamburger Month. Check out Fat Patties for an incredibly diverse selection of Hamburgers with all different kinds of meat (or meatless) with a vast array of accompaniments.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. - Albert Einstein In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. - John Muir

In addition May is National Barbecue Month. For some great Barbeque, the kind that made the Carolinas famous for the stuff, try Dukes Barbeque for a variety of southern delicacies highlighted by Barbeque and Chicken. Of course, this letter would not be complete without a mention of Memorial Day, conceived to honor our Veterans who have died in the service of our country and is also used as a time to remember all those who have passed before us. Memorial Day also marks the “official” beginning of summer and the beginning of the beach season. So get that suntan lotion on and enjoy the weather!
