A Tourist

Destination

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 30 years since Sea Island Scene was born. It seems like only yesterday that I had the brainchild to publish a magazine to inform tourists and locals about dining, shopping and things to do in and around Beaufort. In those days, Beaufort was just starting to blossom as a tourist destination and was beginning to be discovered as a premier coastal community. We decided to use stunning photographs of the local sights on the cover and I often had people comment that our covers helped them realize how beautiful Beaufort really was. I often received positive comments about the magazine and sometimes some negative ones—like the reader who picked up a magazine at a state welcome center and made a reservation at the local Holiday Inn and was upset when they arrived in Beaufort, North Carolina only to find that they had no reservation there! I guess they didn’t know South Carolina had a Beaufort. To the dismay of those locals who would prefer to burn the bridges and keep this place a secret, I believe our circulation throughout the region and throughout the state helped people discover just what a special place this is. Our history, the natural beauty of our waterways and majestic oaks, the magnificent antebellum homes, the sunsets, the wildlife and the warmth of the local people make this town a little southern jewel. Some of our advertisers have been with us since the beginning and others have been with us many years. We have readers that tell me they keep each issue. Lipsitz Department Store would display each Water Festival Issue since our first year in their window every year. Like Lipsitz, whose tenure as a thriving business lasted over 100 years, many of our advertisers have been in business for decades and are fixtures in the community. We have a great deal of gratitude for those advertisers and readers who supported us through the years and made Sea Island Scene possible. With this 30th anniversary issue, I want to personally thank each and every one of you for making this magazine a reality.

Historically Speaking

The town takes pride in its unique natural environment and its accessibility to that environment through its network of walking trails, community beach, boardwalk, and observation tower. Since Columbus discovered America in 1492, seven flags have flown over what is now the Town of Port Royal.

Union Church The Union Church, also known as, “The Free Church” was the first church to be built in the historic town of Port Royal. The land was donated by David F. Appleton and in 1878 cost around $1000 to build. It is currently eligible for recognition in the National Register of Historic Places and is being renovated jointly by both the Town of Port Royal and the Historic Port Royal Foundation. These two groups plan to use the renovated building as a cultural and community center.

Boardwalk Observation Tower At Port Royal Sands Beach you will find a waterside boardwalk leading to an observation tower. This tower provides fantastic views of Port Royal, Parris Island and the surrounding area. For tourists, this is a must see, is free to access and open year-round.

For eleven months, during the period of December 20, 1860 to November 7th, 1861, the town of Beaufort was Confederate. Public buildings, including the Arsenal on Craven Street, flew the Confederate flag along with the Palmetto flag of South Carolina. Young men enlisted in various military units. Ministers and church members prayed for President Jefferson Davis and the new nation; women of the community formed societies to make needed items for Confederate soldiers near home and on Virginia battlefields. The Beaufort Volunteer Artillery and other military units camped nearby; the B.V.A. cooperated with the new Confederate Navy in the capture of a Northern ship which was brought to anchor in the Bay to the delight of Beaufort’s children. After considering various harbors of the Southeast, Washington decided on Port Royal, S.C. as the best base for military operations and blockade headquarters. On Nov. 7, 1861, the Federal fleet under Commodore DuPont, with 12,000 Yankee soldiers reduced the Beaufort’s two small forts to rubble.
