Gullah Heritage is Sea Island Legacy

The Town of Port Royal has been celebrating Oktoberfest for years. Though, you won’t find the same kind celebration as other towns and cities, Port Royal’s Oktoberfest is done with a twist of island style! It is a celebration of more than harvest season, but of the seven flags it seems, a festival for people of all ages and cultural backgrounds put on by an historic town that has been around since 1562. Oktoberfest isn’t just for Germans anymore, but Germans certainly are a welcomed bunch at this exciting afternoon event. Cowboys and girls are welcome too. Bringing a little country style to the event is Nashville sensation Bonnie Bishop, and local group Incahoots will get your toes tapping and arms waiving all over Paris Avenue. There’s something for everyone, young and young at heart. There will be plenty of children’s activities to delight the active imaginations of our future leaders. A classic car and truck show for oldie’s and hot rod junkies will line the street under the Carolina sun. Come with an empty belly because plenty of food will be served by some of the town’s most popular restaurants. What better time to begin your holiday shopping than at this event where you can support local artisans and shop locally! If you are looking to take something with you to remember your day, the craft vendors are sure to have special handmade with love gifts for you. The seventh annual Port Royal Oktoberfest will be held on October 17th and will be an event to remember! Come celebrate in the world’s largest annual festival in the quaint coastal town of Port Royal.

Come join us for a down-home celebration showcasing the history of Penn School and the rich cultural legacy of the Gullah people of the Sea Islands. For the 27th year, Penn will host the Heritage Days Celebration to showcase Gullah culture featuring entertainers, such as The Darien County Gullah Shouters, Lady’s Island Gospel Choir and Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk. Witness the Africanisms of basketry, storytelling, net-making, hair braiding, and bateau making that are part of a cultural legacy rooted in West Africa. Designated a National Historic Landmark District since 1974, Penn School was the first school in the South for formerly enslaved Africans, and came to be an international model for rural education. Today, Penn is one of the premier centers for the study of Gullah culture and remains at the heart of a community of history and achievement since 1862. Penn Center’s mission is to promote and preserve Sea Island history and culture. The 27th Annual Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration will feature an Old Fashion Prayer Service, an art exhibition, traditional Gullah cuisine, a cultural symposium, community education seminars, a fish fry, oyster roast, blues performance, and an Old Fashion Craft Fair. See inside for more details on a fun-filled Gullah experience enriched by the historical significance of Penn Center. www.penncenter.com

Rain, Tears and Oysters If you aren’t rich, you should always look useful. -Louis-Ferdinand Celine

Jenelle FROM THE DESK OF

CAIN

I do love my work It’s not work to me Just a lot of heartfelt effort

Wealth building guru Robert G. Allen said, “The future you see is the future you get.” I would like to imagine that is true, though my mind sometimes battles with it's vision for the future. I’d be lying if I said that my life hasn’t been a series of unfortunate events lately, but grasping them and moving forward with a positive frame of mind (and a memory bank of some great famous quotes) has provided the opportunity to see a less bleak future and one of better harmony with my surroundings. Delighted by the advice and wisdom of my new-found friends, I have devoted the last of this year - or more appropriately the rest of my life - to delving back into spiritual and charitable endeavors. Being that I’ve spent this recent couple years running from job responsibilities to home responsibilities and back again, I’ve practically corrupted the core of who I am. After a long emotional absence, I realized I had stopped doing most of my beloved activities; roller skating, acrylic painting, reading and writing for pleasure. Though my fingers do plenty of 70+ wpm for the job, I’ve lost my touch, my personal, eclectic, creative, accountable touch. Not to say I don’t love my job. Most of you who know me well, my faithful readers like Ms. Wasson who I had the pleasure of meeting downtown, know the progression of these pages and are evening enjoying this moment right now. I do love my work, it’s not work to me, just a lot of heartfelt effort. It’s about time to bring the Jenelle back that I loved so much. It’s the girl that use to run down the hallway and do cartwheels for the heck of it. She’s the girl that could make people laugh on the drop of a dime, and the girl who loved dressing up for Halloween. It’s harvest season, time to receive the benefits of our labor. For some, like Kathleen Bray’s daughter Emily and her soon-to-be hubby Brian, it’s time to start a new life with their fall wedding at the beautiful historic Beaufort Inn. There is no better way to make a fresh start than today. So I did it, I started new. On a rainy day I rid myself of tears and plopped myself into a booth of Gilligan’s Restaurant for lunch. I was dining by myself, but did not feel the least bit alone. An adorable young girl, Cassy, kept me company while serving me oysters and their famous shrimp dip. It was all delish! I chatted about the town and it’s weather with the cute server who, with her family had been Beaufort transplants. After I had cleaned my plate and slurped the tabasco drenched oysters straight, I was greeted by one of the restaurant Managers, Jennifer Iddins, who explained what Gilligan’s has to offer. From one child eats free with an adult purchase and all-you-can eat oyster cluster trays, to their patio seating with fire pits, her description of why she enjoys being part of this great seafood restaurant had me already pondering my next visit. Between looking out the wall sized windows at the sky’s shower and the large aquarium attached to my booth, I had found a moment in time that had serenity written all over it. As Fall finds us stepping on crunchy leaves and dressing up for a night of halloween magic, let’s not forget those little moments that we enjoy so much. There is no need to race through each day only to find dissatisfaction in it’s end. Each moment can be a delightful one, if only we dry the tears, enjoy the rain and slurp a few extra oysters.

Give Freely Of Yourself Beaufort cannot stabilize and grow without the generous efforts of our community. During the final weeks of 2009, make an effort to support local organizations who are desperate for your help. The smallest efforts from the hands of many stretches further than you could imagine. Here are some of our local organizations that could use your heart-filled assistance. HELP!

Bring On The Books!

Help of Beaufort provides food, clothing and financial assistance to those in dire need. The organization is comprised of volunteers who spend their time providing things like warm meals to people through their Help Mobile Meals program.

At the Public Library Foundation of Beaufort County, our mission is to enhance and support our county libraries—both now and in the future. We are building an Endowment of $10 million dollars to provide funds and opportunities for the future of Beaufort County Public Libraries. Yet some opportunities are here today. Together with our partners, we are building a new library on St. Helena—on 7-10 acres of land donated by the Penn Center. Beaufort County is sharing a vision with the Penn Center to create a new library in a place where freedom, equal access and the value of education stand strong. To learn more about the foundation or make a contribution to library projects, visit the Beaufort County Library.

Donations of food, clothing and money go directly to people in our community who are most in need of help, those who might not receive help otherwise. At present, Help of Beaufort provides meals for about seventy clients daily, but donations are running low. Families in the Beaufort community are being urged to help in any way they can. Please take the time to rummage through your closets for clothes you may no longer need, or during your next grocery trip pick up a few extra cans to drop off to the Help of Beaufort office. The last thing Help of Beaufort wants to do is face telling those in need that they can no longer help. Your small donation will go a long way. 1910 Baggett Street ~ Downtown Beaufort Donations by mail: PO Box 472 Beaufort, SC 29901 www.helpofbeaufort.org.

Calling All Shells! Please bring all your unwanted shells, sharks teeth, fossils and etc. that you have found on Hunting Island beaches to the Nature Center. With the shells collected the staff are putting together a “sand box” in the children’s section for visiting youngsters to dig up and take home. Looking for smaller shells, such as lettered olives, sand dollars, whelks, sharks teeth... all shapes and sizes would be appreciated. Thanks for helping to enhance a child's experience and understanding of nature while visiting the Nature Center. www.friends-of-hunting-island-sc.org

Here Is Hope Hope Haven of the Lowcountry is a nationally accredited not-for-profit Children’s Advocacy and Rape Crisis Center. Hope Haven provides state-of-the-art child forensic interviews, crisis counseling, victim advocacy, family support, law enforcement partnerships and educational programs to broaden community awareness of sexual abuse issues and improve risk reduction. Donations to Hope Haven of the Lowcountry are much needed and deeply appreciated. The center accepts donated items such as educational toys, toiletries, art supplies, and nonperishable snack items. The Center also accepts office supplies such as copy paper, pens and appreciates any money donation received. Volunteer opportunities are available and include crisis hotline staff, office work, outreach services and fundraising activities.

Teach Beaufortonians To Read Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry is a not-for-profit organization which promotes increased literacy through the teaching of reading, writing, computing and English speaking skills to persons who are 18 years or older. Our students are adults living or working in Beaufort County who have a desire to realize their individual potential through increased literacy. Some are native English speakers that had to drop out of school and want to improve their reading and writing skills so they can get better jobs and help their families. Others speak a language other than English and want to learn English or improve their English-speaking ability. All volunteers will receive 15-18 hours of training. In addition, they will be assigned to a site and a site coordinator who will provide them with information about their student and will recommend materials for study. Silver Paws Palmetto Animal League (formerly named Beaufort Humane Association) began over 30 years ago to find solutions for the growing number of homeless cats and dogs in Beaufort county. As a result, the organization was instrumental in the development of Beaufort County’s first county-run animal shelter. Silver Paws is PAL’s Seniors for senior animals program. PAL will waive adoption fees for anyone 65 years of age and older who is adopting a cat or dog who is seven years or older. director@palmettoanimalleague.org ~ (843)227-2691

SAFE WINTER TRAVELS By Tresa Erickson

843-524-2769

Mon-Sat 10-5

Lady’s Island Center, 102C Sea Island Pkwy Less than one mile from downtown Beaufort.

Every year as the holiday season approaches, roads everywhere begin filling up with college students returning home, snowbirds heading south (which we very much like), vacationers making their great escape and more. It doesn’t matter that the temperatures have dropped, the skies have turned gray and snow and ice have started to fall. The roads are busy, and if you are among winter travelers this year, take caution and follow these safety tips. Plan ahead Determine where you are going, when you are leaving and returning, and how you are getting there and let someone else at home know. Map out the best route to your destination and stay abreast of the weather and the road conditions. If it looks like you are going to be traveling in a lot of snow and ice and you don’t have a lot of experience driving in bad weather, take a course in winter driving or bring along a more experienced driver. Service Your Vehicle There is nothing worse than trying to traverse icy roads in a poorly functioning vehicle. Don’t let it happen to you. Have your vehicle inspected before you leave and make sure it is in good condition. Depending upon where you are going, you may need snow tires. Check with your mechanic. Carry a roadside kit You never know what the roads will be like and if you will have to stop. Be prepared with an emergency roadside kit. You can purchase one or create your own. Just make sure you pack all of the essentials, including a cell phone and extra food, water and blankets in case help does not arrive right away. Stay alert Whether in good weather or bad, you need to be alert, so get plenty of rest before your trip and make healthy choices during it. Just a little dehydration can lead to fatigue, which can lead to big trouble behind the wheel. Drink lots of water and eat plenty of nutritious snacks to keep up your energy. Take it easy Stay calm and slow down when you hit patches of ice and snow. Yes, you may arrive a little later than planned, but better that than not arriving at all. Never grip the wheel. It could cause you to lose control of the vehicle. If the conditions get too bad, stop and stay the night somewhere. You never know what Old Man Winter will bring. Even with the best of precautions, you may still find yourself stranded. Should that occur, do not panic. Call for help, and to help rescue workers find you, tie a brightly colored cloth to your antenna. Then get back into your vehicle crack open a window for air, snuggle up under some blankets and sit back and wait. Run the heater for 10 minutes every hour or so to keep the vehicle warm and move your arms and legs as much as possible to maintain circulation and body heat. With any luck, you won’t have to wait long for help to arrive. Traveling on winter roads can be risky. Be prepared, drive smart and get to your destination safely.

Birdies for Beginners It’s all in the swing There are two circles or sweeps which, merged together, form the golf swing. One is imparted by the twist of the body (I call that the horizontal sweep) and the other is imparted by the arms lifting the club up over the right shoulder; this I call the vertical sweep. I desire to call the player’s attention to a few facts concerning them which may be a guide in understanding the functions of each. These two forces are the most important items in the stroke, and the mechanical problem they offer requires some nice calculation to work out properly in the player’s mind. Our pivot or center must remain fixed in order that we may be able to see the ball clearly, as well as to have that pivot remain constant

with reference to its distance from the ball, we must remember that the pivot is located between the shoulders, as it is through the shoulders and arms that the power is immediately transferred to the club. We will now consider the vertical swing or circle, for that is the one which causes the greatest amount of trouble, as it is the preponderance of it which results in pulling in the hands. To make this point perfectly clear I suggest that you try the following experiment: address the ball in your usual manner and eliminate everything which does not pertain to a vertical swing in making your stroke; that is to say, every item which has anything in the nature of a horizontal or parallelwith-the-ground movement. You will find that you will merely raise your club up over your head and bring it down again. If you will notice carefully you will observe that in order to keep from slapping the ground you will have to draw in your hands. You will observe that the club head goes out beyond the ball as you raise your club away from the ground, and you will also observe, on your downward swing, that the vertical sweep is making your club cut the line along which you wish to send the ball, at right angles. To complete the vertical circle or swing you have to draw in your hands.

I don’t say my golf game is bad, but if I grew tomatoes, they’d come up sliced. - Miller Barber

All About

Entrances

By Tresa Erickson

Got a nice entryway, but not sure what to do with it? Set up a small table by the door where everyone can drop their keys and mail and that’s about it? Make the most of your entryway by turning it into a usable space.

Although typically small, entryways make wonderful spaces for a variety of activities from reading to listening to music. In order to determine what would make the best use of your entryway, you need to think about your needs. Could you and your family use a place to read? Could you use a place to work on the laptop? Could you use a place to display collectibles? Along with your needs, you must consider the dimensions and layout of the space. You may need a place to read, but if there is no room for a comfy chair or love seat, that idea may not work. The entryway may be more suitable for the display of collectibles, especially if it has a lot of wall space. Imagine having your spouse's entire collection of antique fishing lures hanging in the entryway. What an impressive welcome that would make to visitors. You also need to consider the traffic your entryway receives. If people are forever coming in and out of your front door, you may not want to turn it into a cozy reading or computer nook. How in the world would you ever get anything done? A buffet area for party nights or a mini game room with a drop-leaf card table, on the other hand, might be more suitable. Whatever purpose you decide to have your entryway serve, make sure you decorate it accordingly. If it’s going to be a music room, tuck the piano under the stairs and provide some chairs for listening. Add a light above the piano and a basket for sheet music. Hang up some inspiring prints, and voila, your music room entryway is complete. If your entryway flows into another room, you may want to go with a complementary color scheme to keep the décor consistent. If it does not, feel free to use whatever color scheme you want to enhance the function of the room and invoke the appropriate mood. Don't forget in all of the rearranging that your entryway still serves as an entrance to your home. Make sure guests feel welcome and have a mat to wipe their feet on. Make sure family members have a place to stash their coats, keys and mail. Don’t make the décor so luxurious that everyone starts coming in the back door instead. The larger your entryway, the more likely it can serve more than one purpose. Put on your thinking cap and take advantage of all of that space. All-in-all, the entry way is the beginning point at which you will eventually find yourself relaxing at the end of a long day.

alloween traces its origin to the Christian observance of Allhallows Eve, the evening of October 31; November 1 being All Saints' Day. There are even older customs, dating back to Celtic and Druid times. Beaufort and the Sea Islands abound with tales of ghosts, ghostly lights and things which go bump in the night. On the Point, in Beaufort, is the story of a French dwarf in the Danner House, also known as the Castle. The dwarf was a Frenchman, left here by Captain Jean Ribaut in the 1560s for some minor offense. This ghost wandered aimlessly about, until the building of the Castle in 1861. The Castle reminded him of French chateaus, and he adopted the Castle as his home. At the Teacherage, on Beaufort's Bay Street, is a glass copula on the roof. Here is the tale of a sea captain's wife watching the river for her husband's return. Even after her death, her spirit has been reported continuing that watch. There is a midnight light, seen on the Lands End road on St. Helena's Island, near the ruins of old Fort Fremont. The light has given rise to several tales. Some

Page 25

say it is from burning swamp gas, or just the reflection of car lights from Parris Island. Others tell of a Union soldier, with a lamp looking for his head lost in some wartime skirmish. On Hunting Island, there is the tale of a maiden named Caroline, dressed in a long, blue gown, seen on stormy nights at the old lighthouse walking about. During the 1893 hurricane, she helped her father keep the lighthouse beacon burning. Fripp Island also has its ghost. It is that of Blackbeard, the Pirate, who kidnapped a Charles Town maiden and brought her to Fripp Island. When she continued to spurn his advances, he killed the girl's fiancĂŠ. The maiden dashed into the surf and drowned herself. On full moon nights, she is sometimes seen walking on the beach. Some people say that the Baynard Mausoleum, in the Zion Cemetery, Hilton Head Island, is haunted by the ghost of William Baynard, local planter. In 1830, his young bride died of fever at nearby Baynard Hall. It is said that on stormy nights, the ghost of the sorrowing bride- groom may be seen driving the funeral hearse, pulled by four black highspirited horses on island roads.

ysterlicious! Oysters On The Half Shell 24 live oysters, shucked, liquor and shells reserved 8-ounce bottle clam juice 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 large or 2 medium shallots, minced 2 garlic cloves dry roasted in a skillet and crushed

1 tspn chopped marjoram or 1/2 teaspoon dried 1 tspn freshly ground black pepper 3/4 tspn salt Pinch cayenne pepper 2 tspn white wine vinegar Juice of 2 medium lemons

DIRECTIONS: Drain liquor from oysters into 1 cup measuring cup. Add clam broth to oyster liquor to measure 1 cup total. Reserve 24 oyster shells with deep cups in bowl; cover and refrigerate. Heat oil in large shallow saucepan over medium heat. Add shallots and sauté until very soft, about 2 minutes. Add garlic, marjoram, pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper; saute 1 minute. Add oyster liquor mixture and vinegar. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low. Add oysters and simmer gently until oysters begin to plump and curl around edges, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Immediately transfer oyster mixture to medium glass bowl. Stir in lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to 1 day. Spoon oysters and some of juice onto reserved shells and serve immediately.

Steamed Oyster Shooters in Tomato-Chive Vinaigrette 2/3 cup peeled, chopped Roma tomatoes, about 4 tomatoes 2 tspn extra-virgin olive oil 1 tspn fresh lemon juice Generous 1/4 tspn curry powder

1/4 tspn fine sea salt Pinch ground pepper 1/4 tspn sugar 1 tspn finely snipped fresh chives 10 small, freshly shucked oysters

DIRECTIONS: In a small saucepan, combine tomatoes, olive oil, lemon juice, curry powder, salt, pepper, and sugar. Place over low heat and warm for about 2 minutes, just until slightly sizzling. Remove from heat, stir in chives, and set aside. Place a wide, covered metal steamer over a wok containing 2-inches of water. (If you don’t have a steamer, you can rig one up by placing a small ramekin upside down in the bottom of the wok and adding water to come almost to its top. Place a plate on top of the ramekin and, if you don’t have a domed cover for the wok, use aluminum foil to cover.) Spoon 1/4 teaspoon of tomato mixture into each of 10 sake or small cups and top with one oyster. Spoon a tablespoon of tomato mixture on top of each oyster. Bring the water in the wok to a simmer and transfer cups to steamer. Cover steamer and steam for 3 minutes. Transfer the cups, using a spatula, to a serving platter. Let cool for 4 minutes. Place a toothpick into each oyster so guests can spear the oyster and slurp the vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

Want oysters without the work? Visit Gilligan’s for fresh local oyster trays.
