Following the success of a Wet Leisure profile within UK Construction magazine and continuing conversations with major swimming pool and spa authorities such as SPATA and the BSPF, it was found there was NO dedicated publication focused on the swimming pool industry targeting the construction and architectural sector. In order to deliver a publication of this nature SwimCONSTRUCT magazine was born and is now the only dedicated publication highlighting the direct link between the two industries. The launch of SwimCONSTRUCT was highly successful and the magazine has featured a range of exhibitions and profiles on leading swimming pool and spa companies over its past issues. SwimCONSTRUCT aims to provide the latest industry news, expo previews and reviews, project updates and company profiles within each issue.

Councillors approve essential repairs for Tarlair Swimming Pool Councillors have agreed to a package of essential repairs for the conservation of Tarlair swimming pool complex in Macduff. Repairs totalling £300,000 were agreed by Policy & Resources Committee on Thursday 13th June. Tarlair Swimming Pool complex was constructed in 1930 and included a boating pool as well as pools for swimming and paddling, together with changing rooms and a tea pavilion. Because of its design, the complex was listed as Category A by Scottish Ministers in February 2007. Despite its poor state of repair, the pool remains popular with visitors and the Friends of Tarlair community group has been fundraising for the pool. The group
has also submitted a Stage 1 application for Community Asset Transfer, which is currently being assessed by officers. At today’s committee meeting, members approved outline proposals for essential repairs to the pool complex, at an estimated cost of £300,000. A range of options, put forward by historic conservation experts Addison Conservation and Design, were considered, from taking no action to full refurbishment of the facility at a cost of £2.5M. Members opted for the essential repairs, demonstrating the council’s commitment to Tarlair Swimming Pool and conserving the facility’s category A listing. The work will also provide a platform
for potential future uses of the facility, prevent significant maintenance costs in the future and alleviate any current health and safety concerns. The recommendation had already been approved by members of Banff and Buchan Area Committee at an earlier meeting. The Policy and Resources Committee also asked for a further report from officers on the feasibility of taking on any other work to the pool in the future. Work on the future of Tarlair Swimming Pool has included extensive consultation with the local community, including the Friends of Tarlair group and Banff and Macduff Community Council.

Nothing but the best at Help for Heroes Recovery Centre For many Servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty, life will never be the same. Help for Heroes believes they deserve the very best of support to recover and build new, active, independent and fulfilling lives. This is a view strongly endorsed by Golden Coast, which has recently supplied sauna and steam equipment to aid that recovery. The installation is at Tedworth House in Wiltshire, which is seen as the flagship Help for Heroes Recovery Centre. The centre’s Phoenix Wing has been fitted with a steam room and a sauna from the prestigious Swedish manufacturer Tylö, for which Golden Coast is the UK distributor. In keeping with its aim to provide the best of everything, Help for Heroes chose a Tylö Evolve 2422 sauna cabin and a Tylö Excellent 8AL steam room – expertly installed by sauna and steam room specialist Leisurequip. Constructed from aspen wood with a glass door, the Evolve 2422 combines a traditional sauna feel with modern technology. The high-tech steam room is built from a special grade of vacuumformed plastic to ensure tight seams and a robust structure. Both rooms offer exceptional levels of disabled access. “The sauna and steam room are great additions to the facilities at Tedworth House,” says Martin Colclough, Head of Sports Recovery at Help for Heroes. “They help, in particular, to relieve joint pain and muscular tension, but in addition the sauna, steam and aromatherapy provide a relaxing environment for both body and mind.” The new facilities have been warmly welcomed by residents including veteran Billy Brumfield: “Like a lot of wounded soldiers, I’ve found it hard to come to terms with the changes in my life. “The support we get from Help for Heroes is brilliant, and having access to high-quality facilities like the sauna and steam room helps to make us feel we are appreciated. I can see that this is already having a beneficial physical effect on me and I always look forward to winding down with a steamy relaxation session.” For further information on Help for Heroes please visit www.helpforheroes.org.uk.

New Subtropical Swimming Paradise plans revealed for Center Parcs Woburn Forest village Center Parcs has revealed the designs for the new Subtropical Swimming Paradise, which will be housed in the new Woburn Forest village when it opens in spring 2014 The Subtropical Swimming Paradise is an iconic part of the Center Parcs villages, where families can enjoy a variety of pools and water experiences. They are one of the most popular elements of a Center Parcs break with over 90% of guests visiting the Subtropical Swimming Paradise during their stay. Woburn Forest will have the largest Subtropical Swimming Paradise in the UK with lots of exciting new features. The new shape has been revealed as a clam rather than the classic dome, pyramid or butterfly shapes at other UK Center Parcs. The clam will be nestled within the forest landscape with stunning views
through the enormous glazed fascia. The designs showcase the tropical environment and family-friendly experience that the Subtropical Swimming Paradise will offer. Guests will be able to ride the Wild Water Rapids, in the open air outside the front of the clam-shaped structure, with views of the forest landscape around them. There will also be a wave pool, toddler pool, family play area, Lazy River and three exciting new water rides; Tornado, Twister and Typhoon, which will be unique to Woburn Forest. As with all the Center Parcs villages, the environment inside the Subtropical Swimming Paradise will be heated to 29.5°C all year round with a wide variety of tropical plants rescued from around the world creating a truly tropical sensation for guests. Charles Neuman, Woburn Forest Pool
Designer, WTI says: “The designs of the new Subtropical Swimming Paradise are the result of a culmination of 25 years of experience and lots of research into what modern families want. We have taken the best from the existing four villages and added new exciting elements to give guests at Woburn Forest a unique and special water experience.” The build of the Subtropical Swimming Paradise is on track, with all the Glulam wooden beams that support the roof in place and basement works almost complete. The construction of the roof will begin in July with a completion date for the entire structure of January 2014 ready for the delicate process of bringing in the tropical plants.

Balfour Beatty and Southwark Council break ground on the new Elephant & Castle Leisure Centre Scheme Dignitaries from Southwark Council including the Leader, Councillor Peter John, recently joined the Balfour Beatty project team for a ground breaking ceremony to mark the commencement of works on the new £18.5M Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre scheme for Southwark Council. The Leisure Centre, designed in collaboration with Southwark Council, will include a 25m community swimming pool, a 12m learner pool, a four-court sports hall, a 140 station gym, two studios, a spinning room, wet and dry changing facilities and sauna and steam room facilities. The new centre will also provide a crèche, café and associated office space necessary to manage the centre.
Commenting on the milestone Richard Tisdell, Balfour Beatty’s Delivery Director said: “We are thrilled to have started work on this exciting new development and look forward to working with Southwark Council to create a wonderful new leisure centre facility that will benefit the community for years to come.” Councillor Fiona Colley, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Southwark Council said: “There is significant demand for improved leisure facilities in the area, specifically a swimming pool, which we are well on our way to realising. The changes can already be seen, and those looking forward to a transformed Elephant and
Castle need only watch this space.” The project is scheduled for completion in 2015.
Environmental upselling FREE customised retrofit brochure inspires eco-friendly improvements A new retrofit sales brochure from Golden Coast, the UK’s leading independent wet leisure distributor, is inspiring Britain’s estimated 215,000 private pool owners to upgrade their pools with green technologies... and the UK’s many installers to profit from this often overlooked market. Entitled “Ideas and inspiration for improving your pool”, it takes the form of a glossy, full-colour brochure that focuses largely on making pools more eco-friendly and energy efficient. This latest marketing tool from Golden Coast will help pool suppliers take full advantage of the upselling opportunities available. The brochure can be branded – free of charge – with the supplier’s own logo – immediately equipping businesses with customerfacing literature specifically developed to encourage customers to upgrade. “Through our more than 35 years serving the industry, we’ve learned that any pool can be improved,” says Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams. “For installers, the need to replace worn or inefficient equipment – together with owners’ desires to enhance their experience through additional or better features – means that pools can and should continue to be a source of income long after initial installation. “Alongside these drivers, there’s an evergrowing trend towards making everything ‘greener’ and the closely linked incentive
to reduce energy bills, water consumption and other ongoing costs. This means that it should be very easy to sell things like automatic and solar-powered pool covers, MultiCyclone pre-filter units, solar heating, heat pumps and LED lighting – as long as pool owners know about them,” explains Jamie Adams. “As well as answering the demand for environmental friendliness, our supplier-customised brochure will also suggest retrofits that save time and
effort on pool maintenance… or simply add extra fun and enjoyment.” This initiative is one of many ways in which Golden Coast has been seeking to boost its trade customers’ business and support the wet leisure industry through some very tough years. The Swimming Pool Safety Company (SPSC)

The role of Pool Safety Technology to significantly reduce the risk of drowning’s and near drowning’s in Public Access Pools. By Rebecca Smith, Business Development Manager, SPSC There are still an unacceptable number of drowning’s and near drowning’s occurring in swimming pools and waterparks the world over. A person can start to drown in seconds, victims don’t shout or wave their arms to alert someone they are in trouble, drowning victims are silent, go into shock and become submerged often going unnoticed by those around them. The results of a near drowning are also catastrophic if the victim’s brain is starved of oxygen and the lungs are damaged resulting in lifelong injuries. Complex pool design, flumes, static play structures, physical blind spots, glare on the pools surface are a few of the common risks which contribute to the challenges faced by lifeguards in their duty to ensure the safety of pool users. Pool operators and managers of aquatic facilities are themselves at risk if an accident occurs and are under increasing pressures including threats of corporate manslaughter, brand damage and post incident stress. Many pool industry professionals are recognising these risks, taking notice of the worldwide drowning statistics and exploring ways to improve on traditional methods of monitoring pools by adding a crucial second layer of protection in the form of pool safety technology. There are technological pool safety products on the market which are capable of detecting when a person becomes motionless and needs rescuing. However, if pool technology is to be effective in reducing the number of drowning’s and near drowning’s it should detect a person in the early stages of them getting into difficulty to give them the best chance of making a full recovery. An example of an established and proven safety system and one which is in use worldwide is SPSC’S PoolView underwater and above water camera system which gives lifeguards the capability to monitor the entire volume of water to the bottom of the pool through cameras fixed into the pool walls whilst above water cameras give the view on the surface. The cameras feed real time video of activity to monitors at the lifeguard station, when views on the monitor are integrated into the lifeguards scan they can quickly detect a person in difficulty and perform a rescue. PoolView had not been installed for many months in a UK Leisure Centre which suffered from excessive glare on the surface of the dive pool when the lifeguard on duty was able to spot a swimmer on the monitor sinking to the bottom of the dive pool after suffering a fit, because he was able to see underneath the surface glare the lifeguard was able to make a successful rescue and the swimmer made a full recovery.
Pool safety technology will increase the human capabilities of lifeguards and help them to perform their duty with increased confidence, however, it is important to understand modern technology cannot perform a rescue but it will help save lives by providing an early warning of a pool user in difficulty. Drowning and near drowning can happen to anybody regardless of their swimming ability, therefore, it is important pool professionals take notice of the safety products available to them and put safety at the fore font of their operations and start exploring the advantages of using pool safety technology to increase and improve their existing safety procedures. Adams and EVA: How Dutch LEDs are lighting up UK pools Shaun Adams, a Director of Golden Coast EVA Optics underwater lighting at Center Parcs

EVA Optics underwater lighting at Center Parcs
Have you ever been to a five-star hotel at night and been struck by a colourful, illuminated swimming pool? One where luminescent water glows with a kaleidoscope of changing colours? If so, the chances are the pool was lit by underwater LED lights. LEDs are now one of the brightest and most energy efficient methods of lighting on the market. With the announcement of an exclusive partnership between leading Dutch lighting manufacturer EVA Optic and UK distributor Golden Coast, this new wave of lighting has hit UK shores. EVA Optic is well-known throughout Europe for providing underwater lighting displays. The company has worked on cove lighting in government buildings and underwater lighting in international competition swimming pools. They also provided the spectacular underwater lighting schemes for Center Parcs resorts in six cities in The Netherlands and Germany. Their LED underwater lighting units can be installed during the design and construction stage, or mounted into the walls of existing pools as a retrofit. EVA Optic’s range of luminescent LED underwater lighting is available in the UK only via Golden Coast, and has been developed for both commercial and residential pools. These high-powered, compact LEDs feature a unique set of properties not found in standard pool lights. Their combination of very high light output and extremely wide beam angles ensures a uniformly illuminated pool from one wall to another. EVA Optic LED underwater lighting is available in six versions, all designed with the latest LED technology. In terms of energy efficiency, the A2 Multicolour LED underwater light has two high-power chip LEDs with a constant power consumption of 50W. The overall light output corresponds to a standard 400W halogen underwater light, yet the unit only consumes an eighth of the electricity. The A2 contains three colours in one light. The lamp is DMX-ready and is equipped with Intelligent Power Control so that the output of the lamp remains fixed at 100%, even if only one of the two LEDs is on. The electronics (both driver and power supply) are not located in the fixture, but are mounted in a central area above the ground. This makes the unit not only less vulnerable, but technical maintenance a lot more practical.
The A4 LED underwater light has four LED colours; red, green, blue and white (6500K or 3250K). With this lamp you can mix any colour you want, but you can also opt for 50W white light, something standard RGB lamps are not capable of. These underwater lights are capable of producing intense, deep glows of strong colour, or more delicate, subtle light arrays. The user picks the light value and colour density themselves. The most eye-catching display, though, is from running one of the DMX colour shows where the lights constantly cycle through swathes of luminescent colour, brightness and depth; multiple colours dance and reflect off the surface of the water. The lamp is equipped with ‘Intelligent Power Control’, which ensure the lamp always has maximum light output of 50W, even if only one of the four LEDs is turned on. In other LED underwater lighting, major light loss occurs when only one colour of the light output remains. The EVA Optic LED Underwater Lighting units are available to buy in the UK only through Golden Coast, the UK’s largest independent distributor of wet leisure products. Shaun Adams is a Director of Golden Coast, an independent Wet Leisure distributor based in Devon. Pellet Pro Motive™ ®
keeping the lid on pool chemicals… Hydrotherapy pools, swimming pools and spas require regular and accurately measured chlorination to help disinfect and protect bathers from harmful water borne bacteria and viruses. It is also equally important that the method of chlorine dosing is as safe and user friendly as possible for the pool operator, minimising the potential for contact with chemicals. Unlike traditional pressurised feed systems or chemical dosing pumps, the Pellet Pro® Motive feeder offers a new and patented automatic dosing method for calcium hypochlorite tablets by incorporating a vacuum sealed system for the preparation and dosing of chlorine solution, significantly reducing the risk of accidental contact with the chemical product. The vacuum sealed tablet hopper prevents the possibility of any egress of dust or fumes and keeps the tablet product in perfect condition, making for a safer and much more pleasant plant room environment.
The compact Pellet Pro® Motive™ feeder is available in 7kg and 25kg hopper versions, with a precise, controllable dosing output to suit almost any size of pool and can be easily installed and connected to virtually any type of disinfection controller. Already in operation in numerous public and commercial pools around the UK, Glasgow Life have installed Pellet Pro® Motive™ systems across many of the cities pool facilities, including the recently redeveloped Tollcross International Swimming Centre, in readiness for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Aquascapes Ltd Creating innovative designs to meticulous standards
12
Based in Essex, Aquascapes is a leading specialist in the bespoke wet leisure industry with an already established reputation. With almost 15 years of experience, its dedicated team of professionals is experienced in all areas of wet leisure consultation, design, installation, maintenance and repair of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, splash pads and aquatic playgrounds, wellness and health, landscape architecture, outdoor fitness equipment, and environmental control including filtration, heating and chemical dosing. The Company was formed in 2001 and in Managing Director, Sean Connelly, it boasts somebody with more than 20 years of experience in the industry and is at the forefront of all project design and consultation. Predominantly employed within the commercial sector, which includes local authorities, hotel groups, property developers and holiday parks, Aquascapes also has a very large turnover from the individual private sector. As well as specialising in all areas of wet leisure, the Company has become synonymous with larger aquatic playgrounds at holiday parks and wellness suites at commercial leisure centres. All staff and contractors are trained to the highest industry standards, and Aquascapes Ltd guarantees all of its projects will enhance any environment, thus ensuring customers receive the very finest work. One of the many noteworthy projects Aquascapes Ltd has delivered is the project management and consultancy of the award winning Porto Montenegro complex. The 80m pool was built to sit inside an existing submarine dry dock at Porto Montenegro and suspended over the Adriatic Sea. It is a focal point for the European yachting scene. As a vital component of a British led design team, Aquascapes
liaised with architects to ensure the aesthetics they were attempting to achieve blended seamlessly with the technical functionality required to operate a pool of this nature. The Company’s technical drawings included consultancy for the pool construction as well as filtration plant, heating and chemical dosing. The expertise of Aquascapes lent itself perfectly to this audacious project, which saw 2,500 contractors work day and night to meet the deadlines for the launch date to coincide with the 40th birthday celebrations of one of the main investors, Nathan Rothschild. This aqua paradise won the Company a Best Design Award from Pool and Spa Scene for the quality of the design at Porto Montenegro. Aquascapes was also honoured to have central involvement in the design and construction of the water zone at London’s prestigious landmark “The Crystal”, a sustainable Cities Initiative by Siemens. The brief was to raise awareness on the importance of water as a precious commodity, which was realised by creating various eye-catching features. These proved very attractive to the intended audience who were then educated on the movement of water and therefore the overall consumption. This is the world’s first interactive exhibition, dedicated to improving knowledge of urban sustainability. Every visitor is guided through the urban infrastructure of the future and how lesser water wastage and careful usage can be achieved. The Company also worked at Hornchurch Sports Centre to replace the complete filtration system. It was achieved without any downtime or loss of revenue to the leisure centre and is a perfect example of Aquascapes’ engineers thinking outside the box attitude to achieve was previously thought of as impossible. Work was necessary because the filters at the sports centre – a large swimming facility serviced by eight two metre
diameter filters and 200m pipe work – had reached the end of their functional life and Aquascapes was commissioned to replace the filters and all associated pipe work. Management at the centre had budgeted to close the facilities for two weeks while work was carried out. But after the initial site survey, Aquascapes was able to design a layout that allowed existing filters to continue running, while the new filters were installed alongside. This was a massive achievement for both Aquascapes and the centre, as the project could be completed without any interruptions to the pool or its users. This repositioning of filters was not once mentioned as an option before Aquascapes did so, and it is another example of how the Company once again exceeded its own standards of excellence, something it is immensely proud of doing. The Haven Holiday Park at Weymouth Bay benefited from the high standards of work of Aquascapes, who installed a 60m Lazy River, water cannons and waterfall. The commission to design a new attraction for the park included the refurbishment of the existing indoor peanutshaped pool and reshaping of the outdoor pool by constructing walls within the pool area to achieve segmentation of half inside and half out, together with a swim through shutter. Aquascapes is, and always will be passionate about reinforcing the safest and most innovative products in this market. As time has passed, pools have developed hugely over the years, but the important methodology stays the same. All of the pool shells are designed to meet with British standards and are backed up with full structural design calculations. The Company’s in-house AutoCAD design facilities allow an initial sketch to evolve and develop into a fully operational design swiftly and efficiently. Ranging in size from Olympic to small domestic leisure
pools, Aquascapes has no standardised design, which is a major advantage and allows the Company to promote the ‘Any size, any shape, anywhere’ philosophy. All projects are built to meticulous standards and in full compliance with all of the latest guidelines and regulations, which will ensure further success for Aquascapes in the future. Trend Report: aquanale to present all the latest trends from the swimming pool and wellness sector There are almost two million privately used swimming pools in Germany, and around 800,000 of them have a water depth of more than one metre. Dieter C Rangol, Executive Director of the Federal Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness (bsw), believes the swimming pool industry is gaining momentum. “An increase in personal health awareness, a greater willingness to invest in one’s own property, a stable employment market and increasing consumer confidence all contribute to strengthening the swimming pool and wellness markets,” he says. aquanale, the International Trade Fair for Sauna, Pool and Ambience, will showcase the latest trends from the swimming pool and wellness sector from 22nd to 25th October 2013 in Cologne.
automotive applications. Now it has been specifically developed for use in saltwater pools and mineral baths, where its durability is particularly valued. Stainless steel is also popular these days. This proven material, which has been used in swimming pools for over 40 years, has never gone out of fashion. In describing the advantages of this “evergreen” material, Marc Hölter, Managing Director of G Eichenwald GmbH & Co KG., says, “Visually, it scores points for its shiny polished surfaces. It is more corrosion-resistant than other metals, completely recyclable and easy to take care of.” The hygienic aspect also plays a big role in its popularity - as is the case for the sector in general.

The revised regulations for the water quality standards DIN 19643 for swimming pools will be the main theme at the Fifth Cologne Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum (the congress programme at aquanale). Expert speakers will shed light on the changes in the regulations that will affect public pools, including hotel pools. “There will also be changes affecting the pool in your own garden,” says Frank Eisele, who is the Managing Director of WWS Eisele UGmbH and a publicly appointed and certified expert for swimming pool technology. As an expert on standardization, he will present the initially released details of the new European regulations for private pools, which will go into effect in 2014. This focus on safety isn’t just theoretical. It is also reflected in new products. For example, Bayrol Deutschland GmbH will present its BlueFox pool safety system, which sounds an alarm when someone is in danger of drowning - and it monitors the pool even when the pool isn’t officially open. This system is suitable for private as well as public pools. Generally speaking, the strict division between private and public pools is becoming blurred. This development will be reflected at aquanale 2013. Since a large number of exhibitors serve both markets, the swimming pool areas of aquanale and FSB will be presented together for the first time in Hall 10.1. FSB, the International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities, will take place in parallel with aquanale.
The trend toward “homing” - making the home into the centre of one’s social life - is influencing the swimming pool sector. It is becoming customary for people to invite their friends “in” to socialize, so it’s important to have a comfortable and inviting home. Gardens are becoming an extension of living rooms. In the process, strict delineations between the living room, the terrace and the swimming pool are dissolving to create an integrated living space - “living by the water”. Uwe Rengers, Marketing Director of RivieraPool Fertigschwimmbad, explains, “We are presenting pools with shallow water zones that connect the living room with the garden and give the swimming pool facilities a beach-like character.” The shallow water zone is not only a comfortable place to enter the pool but also a wellness area that is a pleasant place to spend some time. Special lounge chairs for this shallow water area provide a true “holiday experience” - just outside the door. Many customers want a swimming pool that is as close to the house as possible in order to have a view of the water from the living room window - even in the winter. There is no longer much demand for a pool that is separate from the house and is covered with a tarpaulin during the cold months of the year - a measure that disfigures the landscape. “Nowadays, even when there’s snow and ice, people want to illuminate their pools and make them look attractive,” says Rengers. Aesthetics is a dominant theme, down to the smallest details of a swimming pool.
With corners and edges
Even built-in elements have left their status as purely functional products behind them. They now are produced in eye-catching contemporary designs. Rounded edges and corners are out of fashion. Today the trend is toward forms made up of straight lines. The corners and edges of cubic built-in elements make them very popular. The pool area has followed the example of the bathroom, where fittings and accessories have evolved from elaborate to minimalistic.
Less is more
14
Overall the trend is toward facilities that have a purist look with a subtle design. Clear forms displaying timeless elegance, as well as transparent elements are gaining in popularity. Karl-Heinz Bührmann, Managing Director of Corso Sauna Manufaktur GmbH, describes the contemporary sauna as an increasingly exclusive design object that is dominated by glass surfaces and high-quality stone. Stylish accents provide a tasteful balance to rigid aesthetics, whether it’s a decorative wall in a sauna or a bright red hot tub for the garden such as the one available from G. Eichenwald GmbH & Co KG.
Nothing is impossible
New materials are also coming into play. In line with the motto “nothing is impossible”, Schmalenberger GmbH & Co. offers a waterfall shower made of carbon. This innovative material was previously used mainly in aviation and space technologies and in
Hygiene and safety
Refined designs that conserve resources
The hall will be dominated by one colour: green. An increased level of environmental awareness in the population has created a demand for energy-efficient solutions for pools, saunas and spas. The industry has responded by producing pool accessories that conserve natural resources. Suppliers that offer environmentally friendly products have the advantage here. “A swimming pool cover can reduce a pool’s energy requirements by more than half,” says Bert Granderath, Managing Director of grando GmbH. This company supplies rigid-slat, roller-system pool covers in all shapes and sizes. But even though customers want to make sure their swimming pools are as environmentally friendly as possible, no one wants to forgo comfort and design. Granderath says: “That’s why we offer attractive swimming pool covers that can be opened and closed by remote control from the comfort of a chaise longue. Alternative energy sources have also become popular in the pool and wellness sector - for example, swimming pool covers with solar-collecting profiles that absorb the free energy provided by the sun and transfer it to the water in the pool, and solar showers that use the “heat from the sky”. Natural colours and natural materials are also in. A green thread runs through the entire sector, from swimming pool liners to garden furniture. Those who like it even greener will feel right at home in the special area presented by the German Society for Near-natural Swimming Facilities. Here, swimming pool and garden experts will demonstrate how enjoyable natural pools and swimming ponds can be. In other words, aquanale will present the entire spectrum of products from the swimming pool and wellness industries, ranging from tried and tested traditional products to fantastic fixtures of the future.
Everything at a swipe
The world of swimming pools and wellness is also part of the Internet generation. What sounded like science fiction just a few years ago is now our everyday reality. “Setting the water to a comfortable temperature and organising pool cleaning from the office - of course that’s possible,” says Jürgen Bergmann, Managing Director of Zodiac Pool Deutschland GmbH, referring to the centralized pool control system his company offers. WDT Werner Dosiertechnik GmbH & Co KG. has also brought its measurement and control technologies into the digital age. WDT Managing Director Rainer Rieger says: “Customers can have their pools serviced by a swimming pool construction contractor, who will use a smartphone, a tablet or a PC to monitor the current water quality information, check for equipment failures and reorder any necessary water care products.” Today’s swimming pool controllers have a touchscreen, and they are so simple to operate that a child can do it. Everything is there at a swipe.
Wellness under the stars
Not only in the pool but also around the pool - or even with no pool at all - the focus is on quality, comfort and refinement. In the past, customers had to decide on which single type of sauna they wanted to install. Now they can order a multifunctional wellness cabin, where they can choose from a variety of sauna and wellness programs each day. With modern control systems, one can switch from a steam bath to the “light sauna” of a tepidarium or turn on the wellness shower at the touch of a button. Automatic foam production for hammam massages is a simple matter. Relaxation for all the senses - that’s what is on offer. That includes lighting, aromatic compositions and auditory experiences. “People who don’t have the roaring ocean before their front door can simply create a salty sea climate in their wellness cabin,” says Rieger. The technology from his company introduces a fine sterile saline mist in steam and saltwater rooms, which soothes respiratory complaints and skin irritation. Because of the health-promoting and relaxation properties of these salts, saunas that include saline elements are increasingly in demand. That’s true for wellness in general whether it be in a private home or when people are on holiday. Wellness and relaxation products are here to stay. The results of the ADAC travel survey 2013 show that even when Germans are on vacation they like to be active. In addition to the traditional bathing holiday, hiking and wellness vacations are among the top five types of holiday. And the TOP THREE travel destinations for wellness and health holidays are Germany, Italy and Austria. The preferences of swimming pool owners are very diverse, and the swimming pool and wellness industries are taking their customers’ desire for more individuality increasingly into account. Companies are doing so by offering not only a wide range of accessories and
Diverse and international
Rangol says: “State-of-the-art swimming pool and wellness technology is the most important factor that makes it cost-effective to operate swimming pools and spas. This is just as important for privately used pools as it is for municipal facilities and hotel pools. That’s why the exhibitors at aquanale are oriented toward a diverse range of target groups: swimming pool construction contractors, architects, planners, hotel operators and public swimming pool operators.” The variety of visitors will also be reflected in the themes that are planned for the Fifth Cologne Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum. “We have something for every target group on the programme,” says Rangol, “and in addition to themes focusing on the latest trends and technology we will have interdisciplinary content.” Marketing and sales strategies as well as issues related to personnel management and communication will be among the topics covered. “I want to show the visitors how to arrive at a shared language with the person across the table, how to cope with difficult customers more easily and how to become a better team player. These are skills that are necessary in interactions with swimming pool guests and during sales and personnel meetings,” says forum speaker Martin Wiedemeyer about his presentation. Wiedemeyer is a business coach from Unternehmen Mehrwert. Attendance at the Fifth Cologne Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum is free of charge and does not require prior registration. By providing more flexible options for attending the forum, Koelnmesse is responding to the wishes expressed by visitors. Just as the trade fair as a whole has become more international, the number of visitors from abroad who attend the forum has also increased. In 2011 around one third of the audience members came from outside Germany. That’s why all of the presentations will be simultaneously translated into English. More information about aquanale 2013 and image materials for the neighbouring trade fair, FSB, are available on the Internet at www.aquanale. com and www.fsb-cologne.com, respectively.

technologies but also products that are versatile. “Our countercurrent swimming facilities can be adjusted to suit the mood of the owner,” says Dietmar Rogg, Managing Director of Schmalenberger GmbH & Co. KG. Using the company’s products, the pool can be transformed into a racing current for athletic swimming, a gentle stream for relaxed paddling or, with the addition of little pearl-like air bubbles, an invigorating whirlpool. New products with multiple functions demonstrate the innovative vitality of the sector - such as an underwater spotlight designed to accommodate an integrated camera. The Hugo Lahme company is developing and selling this new light. “We want to bring safety and energyefficient LED technology together at the highest level,” explains Hans-Joachim Wittwer, Managing Director at Hugo Lahme.
AquaFly Why swim? When you can fly!
16
AquaFly caters for private pool owners who don’t just swim on the surface. The innovative system uses state-of-the-art ceramic technology alongside the most modern of application methods. The pool skin system creates a whole new world within a customer’s pool, providing a world that people can really immerse themselves in. AquaFly specialises in the design and illustration of fine photographic and illustrated art for swimming pool design. The Company has developed a brand new concept allowing for the installation of tiles that feature a high definition, high quality mural display on the walls or the floor of a swimming pool. Any image can be considered and customers can use the Company’s team of seven illustrators or five landscape and aerial photographers to gather their perfect design. Replicating a particular image within the pool can create a unique underwater experience for the user, allowing for a realistic beautiful environment in which to immerse themselves. Making use of the aerial photographer can mean that the swimming experience can be transformed into a whole new dimension, giving the feeling of flight or weightlessness. Two image collections are on offer from AquaFly; the standard range will allow for customers to choose from an image library from the Company’s list of fine art photographers and illustrators, while the ‘Signature Range’ comprises high end pieces of art produced by renowned international artists and photographers who have agreed to license their work to AquaFly. The agreed terms for these prices will allow for no reproduction of the image and therefore the end result is completely unique. The new technology allows the image to be encompassed within
the tile surfacing during the production process, the colour fixing and matching technology is completely unique and AquaFly is the only company currently registered to produce the product. Previous developments in image recreation on tiles have included mosaics and painted tiles. However this technology allows the image to be fixed within the tile, which is UV and chemical proof, and comes with a high quality, high definition finish. AquaFly has a specialist insulation team with years of experience in fitting high-level swimming pools. Founder Jason Lock has 20 years of experience in the ceramic tile industry and knowledge of its technologies. Jason and the team will see the entire process through from the initial survey to the installation, including re-filling the pool and will even undertake a second underwater survey to inspect all elements of the product are performing as expected. AquaFly will undertake an initial survey of each pool to determine with the client the best use of the pool itself as well as the most appropriate artwork to be installed. A photographic survey of the pool and its surroundings will be taken, as well as light reading and colour matching. Precise measurements of areas are taken of the areas that will be receiving the AquaFly art. An internal pool survey is also involved in the first consultation. AquaFly will take submerged photographs of the pool, allowing the Company to produce a digital representation of how the artwork will look. It will also allow AquaFly to make decisions on colours needed, tonal values and precise areas of interest. A second consultation will then be undertaken with the client to consider artwork and imagery. The Company will work
with the clients viewing artwork and photographic images to determine what direction the client would like to head in. Utilising its list of fine art photographers and illustrators, the Company can offer an endless amount of images to consider. The ‘Signature Range’ of artwork will be unique and the agreed terms allow no reproduction of the image. Clients will then receive a quote for the project with variations of cost included for use of licence of imagery. After contracts are signed and a deposit is made, AquaFly will liaise with each client’s current swimming pool maintenance team to organise the evacuation of the water from the pool, and if a maintenance team isn’t used, the Company can organise this. Tiles will be delivered to the address on the day before installation, and installation times will vary on size and intricacy of work to be completed. After the pool is re-filled, a second underwater survey will take place to inspect all elements of the AquaFly product are performing as expected. The minimum size for murals is one metre, and it is half a metre for tiled panels, and AquaFly works on murals and tiled panels to any size subject to the quality of the artwork. At the most, projects last six weeks, subject to
the availability of chosen tiles and size of the project. Samples of critical areas will be prepared if a client requests it. This will usually take areas of important colour or design detail, and involve proofing a section at actual project size for approval. Tiles provided are slip resistant, but extra protection is available in the form of anti-skid coatings. Independent test certificates can be provided at extra cost to give assurance to the resistance levels of any given tile. Specially fully vitrified tiles can also be offered for exterior use including swimming pools and patios. In addition, tiles can be frost-proof if specified on order. Fully vitrified tiles are preferred together with appropriate adhesive and grout. Customers can either send the images they want to be used, or AquaFly can source these. Given a brief, the design team can assist in finding suitable images, which many involve licence fees or specific design commissioning at additional costs. Prices vary dependent upon size of pool and installation work needed. AquaFly is available now to provide quotations and offer consultations. W: www.aquaflytiles.com E: info@aquaflytiles.com

highlight some examples UK Pool & Spa Expo offers the most International array of products and services. By nature of the events independent position in the UK market UK Pool & Spa attracts more overseas exhibitors and therefore provides buyers with a wealth of new opportunities. UK Pool & Spa Expo 2014 is the only event you can attend if you are seeking further knowledge on products, technologies and best practice when integrating any “wet leisure” elements into future projects. Swimming Pool Fitness
As specialists in hydrotherapy pools and equipment, Swimming Pool Fitness offers a comprehensive range of multirehabilitation swimming pools to suit all requirements. The Company’s products are becoming sought after more than ever before due to the growing demand for aqua therapy, its fitness benefits and how it can help people recover from injury. Aquatic therapy immersion helps to reduce load on joins and spine, reduces pain perception, blood pressure, and slows the heart rate. In that time, cardiac output increases, as does blood flow to the muscles, and the body is kept cool during prolonged high output levels. Moving pool floors result in a huge improvement of the usability of a swimming pool. It is changed into a multi-functional area where the circumstances can be changed to comfort different groups of users such as injured sport players, the elderly, disabled and children. This accessibility for different groups of users increases the return on investment for the swimming pool management. An EWAC Medical moveable floor is easy to use and requires the absolute minimum of adaptations in the construction of the pool. The water flows easily through the floor so that an optimal recirculation is ensured. Because of this, water quality in the pool is guaranteed. EWAC Medical offers a wide range of implementation possibilities and all can be adapted to the client’s needs. Swimming Pool Fitness also has the Pooltrack product, which is a moving floor with an integrated underwater treadmill. The speed on Pooltrack, which is equipped with removable parallel bars for support, is infinitely adjustable between barely moving to 11km per hour. The depth can also be changed, which means joint loading can be optimised. The integration of an underwater treadmill in a movable swimming pool floor opens up an entirely new field of therapeutic possibilities. With this solution, an Aquatic Therapy facility can be turned into a multi-role rehabilitation environment. From paraplegic patients to highly trained sports athletes, to severely obese patients, speed and depth settings can be adjusted
to create challenging therapeutic training settings for anyone. Obese patients risk joint injury exercising in a non-aquatic training environment, which could impair or even halt progress. Immersion in water helps to burn more calories, reduces pain perception and at the same time makes overheating virtually impossible. The real benefit is that results can be realised quickly, reinforcing a positive cycle. Athletes run a high risk of injury, which prevents them from maintaining their high fitness levels. An aquatic environment is an excellent safeguard against aggravating the problem, while at the same time pain perception is reduced and high output fitness training can be upheld. In addition, injury time is reduced and loss of fitness avoided. Movable Pool Floors are manufactured by EWAC Medical, and supplied in the UK from Swimming Pool Fitness. BISHTA: British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association

BISHTA – the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association was established in 2001 to ensure that companies engaged in the display and sale of spas and hot tubs are properly trained in water hygiene management and understand the importance of maintaining these standards throughout the product life. Those companies who satisfy BISHTA’s entry requirements are able to apply for membership and if approved, become a member of the Association. BISHTA is recognised by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and Health Protection England. It has a renowned team of experts on hand to offer support and assist with issues, or questions. As BISHTA members are given industry standards to follow in spa and hot tub safety and are expected to uphold ethical trading practices, this should enable smooth working relationships to develop with customers, architects and other professionals, when installing spas and hot tubs. Training in water hygiene management issues is a prerequisite to joining BISHTA, ensuring the risks are assessed to prevent breakouts of diseases, such as Legionnaires disease. Howard Gosling, BISHTA’s Technical Advisor runs regular water hygiene management courses for both BISHTA members and also non member companies who wish to learn about this important topic. Spas and hot tubs can be used in domestic settings and also in business settings, such as the growing popularity of having them in holiday accommodation. However, please note that these business settings should only be used when the equivalent of one family has access to the spa or hot tub. In situations where the equipment is shared amongst a number of different users, then a commercial spa is required to enable the equipment to be used safely and appropriately.
The benefits of dealing with a BISHTA Member are:
••Purchasing quality products that conform to European Standards ••Members that abide by a Code of Ethics to promote fair and responsible trading ••Knowledgeable staff who have access to an expert technical advice service, if needed ••Training for members in water treatment ••Training also in the handling and transport of chemicals to comply with dangerous goods legislation and registration with our own Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser ••Clear warranties in case of any issues ••A thorough after sales service ••Public Liability Insurance Cover This year, BISHTA along with it’s sister company SPATA will be submitting entries (on behalf of the British Swimming Pool Federation) in the first EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards. These Awards are open to 12 countries that are part of the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations, which include Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and of course the UK. These countries have the opportunity to submit their entries in the following three categories: Domestic Outdoor Pools; Domestic Indoor Pools; and Domestic Hot Tubs and Spas. The EUSA Awards ceremony will take place in Cologne on 24th October 2013. Similar to SPATA, BISHTA has its own annual Awards and next year’s BISHTA Awards will be the seventh such event, held along with the SPATA Awards. Members will be competing in a number of categories for hot tubs and swim spas. For more information on BISHTA and its members, visit www.bishta.co.uk or call 01264 356211.
SPATA: The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) was set up to ensure that companies engaged in the construction of swimming pools and their suppliers, work to industry standards, which have been evolved over the past 50 years by experienced professionals. Today, SPATA continues to safeguard those principles of professionalism and good practice through materials such as the SPATA Standards, which all members are required to work to. These Standards can be purchased by professionals, such as architects and local authority representatives, but please note builders must join SPATA to benefit from this information. A Code of Ethics promotes fair and responsible trading and with the support of the SPATA Technical Advisors, a group of experts in the swimming pool trade, members can access information and advice, where required. This advice is available for both commercial and domestic projects and many SPATA members deal with both of these areas. Every day, pool owners and people looking for someone to build their new pool, or refurbish their existing one, visit the SPATA website, or contact the SPATA office to find competent designers, installers, engineers and ancillary suppliers in their area. They know they can feel more confident about choosing a SPATA member, as they are Trade Association members. SPATA is the voice which represents the swimming pool industry at home and abroad and with situations such as this year’s drought restriction, SPATA led the way in discussing the issues
with the relevant water companies to find a way forward. SPATA members have worked on some of the country’s most prestigious pools and showcased their work on popular television shows. SPATA members regularly work with architects to ensure they are aware of the SPATA standards to help ensure pools are constructed correctly. A number of members also have expertise in commercial projects and SPATA holds a Commercial Contractors register that can be requested by contacting the SPATA office on 01264 356210 or admin@spata.co.uk For the third year running SPATA has had a presence at Grand Designs in both London and Birmingham. Each show can attract over 50,000 visitors and is the number one consumer show exhibition for self build, design, interiors and innovation. Exhibiting at these shows gives SPATA the opportunity to promote the Trade Association, its members and the wider pool industry. Every year, the SPATA (and BISHTA - British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) Awards ceremony is held during SPATEX (the trade exhibition) which next year will take place for the first time at the Jaguar Exhibition Hall, Ricoh Arena in Coventry. The SPATA Awards have been running for over 35 years and they recognise the great work undertaken by members. The Awards take place during SPATEX, a trade show run “by the industry, for the industry”. Next year SPATEX will be hosting its 18th show from Sunday 2nd to Tuesday 4th February 2014, with the leading exhibitors from the UK and also some from companies overseas.

ISPE
All applications are placed before the Council of Management on a regular basis, at which time each individual’s request for membership is considered.
The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers
Student Membership
The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers was set up in 1978 to establish an organisation for the individual swimming pool engineer (no corporate membership) to: ••foster a professional approach to the design, installation and maintenance of swimming pools, enclosures and all ancillary equipment ••give recognition to technical skill and ability ••engage in the education and training of persons within all sectors of the swimming pool industry ••promote unrestricted co-operation and liaison between all persons actively involved in the industry and its allied professions and trades ••provide opportunities for association and interchange of thought and experience amongst the members and their colleagues ISPE’s objectives together with the Institute’s main function in the field of education and training, are achieved by means of: • One-day seminars • Hands-on workshops • Technical publications • Level one home study course • The Institute’s own quarterly magazine. There are two completely separate routes to obtaining membership of the Institute: Either, application for membership for direct admission based on age and experience within the swimming pool industry, or student registration via the ISPE Home Study Course and examination to qualified technician. There are various categories of membership, enabling individuals of all ages and from all sectors of the industry, and associated periphery trades and professions, to join.
The Institute’s home study course has been designed to allow a large degree of flexibility in study methods. This allows all students to progress at their own speed without having to keep up with anyone else, thus catering for every individual’s particular situation. People may register at any time and may take the examinations when they feel ready to do so and not within any given period of time.
The Institute at Work
The Institute has presented over 100 one-day seminars on a huge range of topics. These are held between October and March and ISPE members and students receive a discount on the attendance price. Programmes are sent to all members about six weeks prior to each event. In addition, the Institute presents intensive study “handson” workshops on various subjects, most popular being the filtration workshop and the comprehensive water testing workshop. Again, ISPE members and students receive discounts on the attendance price. All ISPE seminars and workshops are open to members and non-members. The Institute organises and presents the technical programme of workshops and demonstrations at the annual SPATEX Exhibition (see www.spatex.co.uk).
ISPE-Endorsed Training
In recent years, recognising the need for specialist training in the commercial sector, the ISPE has “endorsed” a small number of companies who provide training in this area. This includes swimming pool operators working in hotels, schools, leisure clubs, holiday parks and other commercial facilities. Details may be provided on request. For an ISPE information pack, either see the Institute’s website www.ispe.co.uk, email ross@ispe.co.uk or telephone 01603 499959.

PWTAG The UK’s authoritative guidance on swimming pools and spas The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) was established in 1984 as an independent organisation dedicated to raising standards in swimming pool water treatment. PWTAG has a membership drawn from a wide range of relevant statutory, voluntary and professional organisations with an interest in pool water treatment and pool users. It is also able to pursue work without any commercial or other influence. The Group is a focus for debate and improvement in operational and management standards in an area that comes under significant financial and political, as well as technical pressure. The Group has a major role in the treatment and quality of public and private swimming pool water by: ••monitoring and advising on important issues and developments ••infections, pool management, pre-swim hygiene, and new processes ••reviewing existing advice and publications – on design, spa pools, cryptosporidiosis, filtration, and asthma ••publishing books, reports, guidance notes and press releases on pool atmospheres, and interactive water features, including PWTAG’s definitive book, Swimming Pool Water ••research projects ••developing formal guidelines such as a Code of Practice based on the Group’s book.

This work covers water in all swimming and spa pools, whether under public or private ownership and management.
PWTAG’s brief includes
research, work on guidelines and standards, product assessment, advice to pool managers and operators as well as to local authorities such as environmental health. Swimming Pool Water was first published in 1999 and its unchallenged reputation has earned it steady sales. 14 years on, the principles of pool water treatment have barely changed, but there are new developments, new ideas, research and new concerns. Some of the issues addressed by PWTAG arise from within the Group. Many come from outside, either as specific requests and suggestions or as a consequence of PWTAG’s advisory role. In general, PWTAG acts as a focus for debate and improvement in management and operational standards. The current Chair of PWTAG is Janice Calvert. She is assisted by Vice Chair, John V Lee. The Treasurer is Steve Carder and part-time Secretary, Brian Guthrie, is the only paid officer. These four, plus Howard Gosling ( of SPATA) and Ralph Riley (representing the interests of swimmers) make up the executive committee. PWTAG is a direct source of advice and help for pool managers and operators, local authorities and industry. The Group is also active behind the scenes, working with governmental and other agencies. Each year, hundreds of formal and informal contacts are made. Some of this work consists of allaying fears raised by press accounts of academic work, and PWTAG is able to call on professional and technical expertise within and beyond its membership. Aimed at anybody planning or running a pool, the Group has enjoyed steady growth and influence over the years thanks to its reputation. In the last few months PWTAG has been rolling out a new, online code of practice and a syllabus and arrangements for accredited pool operator training.
