Following the success of a Wet Leisure profile within UK Construction magazine and continuing conversations with major swimming pool and spa authorities such as SPATA and the BSPF, it was found there was NO dedicated publication focused on the swimming pool industry targeting the construction and architectural sector. In order to deliver a publication of this nature SwimCONSTRUCT magazine was born and is now the only dedicated publication highlighting the direct link between the two industries. The launch of SwimCONSTRUCT was highly successful and the magazine has featured a range of exhibitions and profiles on leading swimming pool and spa companies over its past issues. SwimCONSTRUCT aims to provide the latest industry news, expo previews and reviews, project updates and company profiles within each issue.

Cryptosporidium – Understanding the Hidden Danger Understanding the problem

Case Study – New York

The problem is, whilst disinfection with chlorine effectively destroys other pathogens - it takes less than one minute to eradicate E. coli, and approximately 16 minutes to kill the Hepatitis A virus cryptosporidium is virtually resistant. Due to a thick outer membrane, it takes more than 10 days to destroy cryptosporidium in a normal pool (25 degrees with free chlorine levels of 1ppm, a pH of 7.5 and no chlorine stabilisers) according to the U.S. Centre of Disease Control.

The outbreak was tracked to a splash pad feature at one of New York’s leading water parks where traditional methods of treatment had failed to provide adequate protection.

Found in water supplies all over the globe, Cryptosporidium outbreaks are now becoming more and more frequent causing severe illness that can be fatal to vulnerable groups such as the young and elderly and in a number of cases has lead to costly and drawn out legal action.

Due to the resistant nature of Cryptosporidium and the scale of health problems caused, the need for increased protection was forced to the top of the agenda, when over 4000 patrons of multiple aquatic facilities in New York became seriously infected with Cryptosporidium, and consequently took out legal action.

Cryptosporidium propagates itself by using its host to spread oocysts (eggs) that then infect others. These oocysts latch onto cells in the intestinal tract, where the parasite reproduces. It then exits the body through the stool ready to infect another person. In swimming pools, cryptosporidium is generally spread via diarrhoea (accidents), which release millions of crypto oocysts into a pool environment from a single faecal incident. As it only takes 10 to 30 oocysts to become infected, simple bad hygiene such as not washing hands after using the toilet or changing a nappy can easily cause an outbreak.

Minimising the risks

The most significant step any leisure operator can take to avoid an outbreak of Cryptosporidium is education. By informing users of the risks and the action that they can take, such as showering before entering the pool, washing their hands after using the toilet and avoiding pool use during and after periods of sickness, operators can vastly reduce the risk of introducing Cryptosporidium into the pool environment. However, no amount of education will protect users from outbreak once pool water becomes infected. Considered the best technology to achieve protection, Ultraviolet disinfection systems are now being used widely as an effective barrier to safeguard against all known bacteria, viruses and pathogens, including the seventeen Chlorine resistant organisms that threaten pool user safety such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. When properly applied, UV light at wavelengths of 254 nm (known as UVC light) is absorbed by the DNA and permanent damage is caused. Once exposed to UVC light, the DNA quickly stops normal cell functions, rendering the organism non viable. Replication is prevented and the organism quickly dies. No species have demonstrated an ability to become resistant to UV, unlike chemical disinfectants where a growing number of organisms have become increasingly tolerant.

Photo courtesy of The Science Picture Company So large was the scale of the problem, the New York Department of Health decided to re-think their entire water treatment strategy. Calling upon their experience in the drinking water industry to find a solution to this growing threat, they concluded that the risk of an outbreak could be greatly reduced by the use of “Ultraviolet water treatment systems”. Working closely with atg UV Technology, the New York Department of Health invested in a range of state-of-the-art UV treatment systems to safeguard public health. Additionally, atg UV biodose tested a number of the UV systems, gaining regulatory approval for their effectiveness against Cryptosporidium and other water borne pathogens. Ultimately, the inclusion of UV treatment systems is now firmly entrenched within New York’s water safety legislation for range of leisure facilities. A decision already being investigated and adopted by forward thinking companies in the UK leisure industry keen to avoid the costly ramifications associated with an outbreak.

THE CLEAR MARKET LEADER FOR SWIMMING POOL DISINFECTION & CHLORAMINE REDUCTION

Independent 3rd Party Validation for Guaranteed UV System Performance. Effective against all known microorganisms. Breaks down problem chloramines. Reduces ‘red eye’ & skin irritations. Allows for reduced levels of chlorine. Bright sparkling water, and fresh clean air. Fully automatic & cannot be overdosed. Variable power and automatic wipers supplied as standard. 3rd Party validated, NSF approved and Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) complainant.

Chloramines in your pool water can cause unpleasant smells, itchy skin, burning red eyes and attack the pool environment through corrosive condensation. The atg UV Technology range of ECL & SX UV systems are designed to eliminate problem chloramines whilst protecting against dangerous waterborne micro-organisms, including chlorine resistent Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The result is safe, crystal clear sparkling water, fresh clean air and a more inviting bathing environment. Typically, following the installation of UV treatment, operators report a significant reduction in combined chlorine levels, reduced chlorine smell and a large reduction in the need for back washing, dilution and shock treatments.

Setting new standards for quality (in the pool and out!) EVA Optic brings world-leading total LED lighting system to the UK A new, total LED lighting system from Dutch manufacturer EVA Optic, looks change the face of commercial pool lighting – both in and out of the pool. With technology tested in some of Europe’s leading sporting facilities, the intelligent LED lighting product range from EVA Optic – available exclusively in the UK through Golden Coast – has been designed to perform in aggressive pool environments. As well as coping with moisture and chlorine, it can handle high ambient temperatures. Near the roof of a pool facility, heat can be extreme and very damaging to LED technology, so EVA Optic has pioneered a high-quality system that prevents any negative impact on lighting units and the efficiency of the LEDs. The system includes self-regulating heat control (ATS) – preventing the risk of premature failure. For down-lighting, EVA Optic is the first and only manufacturer to provide a chlorine-resistant coating. The LED line strip lights use anodised aluminium which is highly resistant to an aggressive pool hall environment. Meanwhile, its underwater lights are pressure-tested to 16 bar and can cope with water as deep as 25 metres. The company’s LED systems comply with the relevant European standards: EN-12193 for lighting levels and EN1838 for emergency lighting The quality, consistency and reliability of pool lighting is vital to safety. Compared to other forms of lighting, LED units last much longer – with more than 60,000 hours of life expected due to ATS.

Replacement of spent or poorly functioning light units can be extremely inconvenient, especially at great depths or heights, and malfunctioning during a swimming competition can be disastrous. Thanks to EVA Optic, maintenance needs are reduced and the possibility of interruptions is minimised. The same LED lighting range which has been adopted at Europe’s leading facilities is now available in the UK through an exclusive partnership with Golden Coast, the UK’s biggest independent distributor of wet leisure products to the trade. It features equipment for both commercial and residential pools, and the lighting

units can be either retrofitted to existing facilities or incorporated during design and construction of new ones. Shaun Adams, a Director for Golden Coast, says: “LED technology is making pool lighting brighter and more energy efficient than ever – and the systems from EVA Optic are simply the best. “What you get from these products is uniformly bright illumination from wall to wall, as well as low running costs and high reliability. There are EVA Optic options and effects to set any mood you wish, ranging from subtle or deep background colours to mesmerising light shows above and below water.”

Interserve dives into £1.7M Southampton swimming pool project Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has started work on a £1.7M swimming pool repair and maintenance project for Southampton City Council. The project will return Oaklands Swimming Pool to full working order for local residents in the Lordshill area by early 2015. Following mechanical issues with the pipes feeding the pool, Southampton City Council was forced to close it in 2012. Interserve’s work, which will largely be unseen by the public, will predominantly focus on repairing the mechanical and electrical systems within the building to restore the effective functioning of the pool. Interserve will also be making improvements to changing cubicles, administration areas and toilets. In addition, the company will undertake an extensive external works package including roof repairs, remediation of surface and foul drain services and enlargement of the car park for pool users. Commenting on the scheme, Craig

Senior, Interserve’s Site Manager said: “Southampton City Council is very keen to ensure that local companies are used for this project. Accordingly, our Southampton office was best placed to take on the project. We will be replacing the filtration and filling system of the pool. Originally it was drained by means of a sump located at the bottom of the pool. However, with pipework having corroded, we will be routing new pipework alongside the pool, which represents the value engineering element of this project. The project will see us create nine structural openings around the perimeter of the pool surround through a 400mm thick reinforced slab in order to fit new pipework. The challenge of this part of the project will be to support the area properly while the fill is removed. Much work will also be done in the pool’s adjacent plant room in order to improve its efficiency.” Councillor Matt Tucker, Cabinet member for Economic Development and Leisure, said:

“It’s fantastic to see that this important facility will be returned to the local community for it to enjoy again, thanks to the hard work of Cllr Sally Spicer who has supported the new community group. At a time when councils are finding it increasingly difficult to protect existing services, it is really positive that we are able to invest in bringing back this much loved leisure venue.” Justin Elliott, Associate Director, from Interserve added: “With our offices less than a mile from Oaklands, our staff have previously benefited from using the facilities. So when we were awarded the contract, the whole team was really excited, as ultimately our staff will be some of the end users of the new community-run pool and facilities. With a number of our supply chain partners also coming from the local area, we will be having a lot of people working on the project who will have a personal interest in the end result, which will make it even more rewarding when the site is opened.”

Every day is the best day By Dorian Davies of Doric Marketing manpower and resources in place to actually deliver on them. Of course, if you don’t have a marketing strategy in place, as many don’t, then get one. Given the seasonal nature of our industry, I’m often asked ‘when’s the best time to review a marketing strategy?’, the answer to which is ‘now’. If you look at the companies who really ‘get’ marketing, they are constantly reviewing and tweaking their strategy because they know that the marketing landscape is constantly shifting, seemingly on a daily basis. So, seize the day, capitalise on the positives in your life and business, and take some action to achieve your goals and make sure you get your piece of the improving economy. As I know all too well myself, you never know what lies around the next corner!

Since I last put pen to paper (or should that be finger to keyboard?) to write this column in SwimConstruct, I have had one of life’s ‘life changing events’ that one often hears of, which has had both negative and, surprisingly, positive impacts on me. To cut a very long story short, after a protracted period of worsening back pain going on for over two months, I woke up one morning at the end of March not being able to move from my waist down. This resulted in me being ambulanced to one of the country’s top specialist orthopaedic centres in Oxford, and undergoing emergency surgery on my spine within minutes of my arrival. Apparently, I had ruptured a disc so badly that it was impinging seriously on my spinal cord. I was warned prior to being operated on that there was a chance that I might not be able to walk when I came out of the operation. To say things are thrown into perspective when someone says that to you is putting it mildly. Luckily, it became apparent after the op that I was able to walk again, albeit shakily. I need a lot more practice at it in the months ahead to further strengthen and improve things. I have also been told that the overall nerve damage I suffered will take a while to repair itself, and I have a long road of recovery and rehabilitation ahead of me. To say that I’m thankful that I can still walk though, is an equal understatement. Despite the long road to recovery that I’m looking at, it’s left me with what many may view as a surprisingly optimistic outlook on the future, as I know I definitely dodged a bullet with this one. Things are looking up in the market too, with growth figures in the wider economy looking promising, especially after so many years in the doldrums, and the quiet optimism that was in evidence at both SPATEX and the UK Pool & Spa Expo appears to continue in anticipation of a good, hot summer. Whilst there are those that may argue that it’s not a recovery for all, it’s fair to say that our target markets will certainly feel the positive benefits of the good news at the moment, and more and more will be looking to invest in lifestyle improving products and services as their confidence improves. So, the opportunity to capitalise on this renewed confidence has never been greater than before the financial crash of 2008. The trouble is, the whole landscape of marketing and advertising has changed immeasurably since then, in many ways we couldn’t even imagine, and if your business is not up to the challenge you will lose out to your more savvy and proactive competitors. So, my advice would be to, without delay, review your marketing strategy from top to bottom, and how it dovetails with all areas of your business. Make a list of all your goals for the next twelve months (be they personal, financial, or both) and then honestly look at whether your strategy is going to deliver those goals. Also, be specific about your goals. I often get customers say things to me like “I want to build more pools”, to which I reply “how many, and of what type / value?”. By putting specific numbers to your goals, it will quickly become apparent as to whether your targets are realistic and whether or not you have the

Hyprolyser® selected for Center Parcs Following successful operation at Center Parcs Elveden Forest, Gaffey Technical Services Ltd has recently completed the delivery of three high output Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems to the new Subtropical Swimming Paradise and Aqua Sana Spa at Center Parcs Woburn Forest, Bedfordshire, due for completion in spring 2014. The Hyprolyser systems will supply on-site generated sodium hypochlorite solution for all of the pool water treatment requirements at this impressive new site. Installed by Glasgow based water treatment engineering specialists, Barr & Wray Ltd, the Hyprolyser system eliminates the need for delivery of traditional chlorine chemicals to site, and the subsequent chemical handling or mixing normally required, providing a much safer and cleaner plant room environment for operating staff. Using salt, water and electricity to generate dilute sodium hypochlorite, the Hyprolyser systems at Woburn Forest will generate up to 4.7kg of chlorine per hour. Injection of the hypochlorite solution into the various pools is carried out using Motive VDS™ dosing systems, developed by Gaffey, to maintain all of the chemical feed lines under vacuum during chemical dosing, eliminating the

need for pressurised dosing pumps, reducing maintenance costs, and further enhancing operator safety in the plant room. Sodium hypochlorite product generated by the Hyprolyser contains 0.7% chlorine, classified as below the hazardous threshold (1%), an important factor in minimising the pool operators COSHH workload. At this strength the product is very stable, affords a long shelf life and does not contain the highly caustic ‘buffer’ salts of commercially produced sodium hypochlorite, reducing the demand for pH correction chemicals. Hyprolyser® is manufactured by Gaffey at its factory in Lancashire and is available through approved installation and service partners. How can spectators be best kept comfortable in an indoor pool hall environment?

20

A great many local authority and school pools have spectator areas, usually consisting of seats or benches on terraces within the pool hall. Usually this area will have a few mums, dads, grannies and granddads watching members of their family swimming. However, on occasion, it could have a couple of hundred or more vocal school children, loudly cheering on their friends on a school Gala Day. So how do you deal with this area, keeping it at a comfortable temperature and humidity for the spectators, but without affecting the pool hall conditions or increasing the running costs? In the majority of commercial indoor pools, to reduce the amount of evaporation, the pool hall temperature is kept on or around (usually slightly above) the temperature of the pool water. The humidity needs to be controlled to prevent condensation on the windows and to make the conditions comfortable for the swimmers when they exit the pool covered in water at 30ºC. This gives a pool hall condition, commonly found in modern installations, of 30ºC, 50%-60% RH (relative humidity), to prevent condensation. This is also comfortable for the bathers in or around the pool. However, it most certainly isn’t comfortable for the fully clothed customers sitting in the spectators gallery. So how can we overcome this problem? We can’t drop the temperature of the entire hall just for the benefit of a few people sitting in the spectator area, as this would then be unpleasant for the bathers. We can’t air-condition the spectator area because it is within the pool hall with no physical barrier between it and the rest of the hall. The two systems would just end up fighting against each other and running up some unpleasantly high energy bills! Because the issue is seemingly insurmountable, in the majority of designs the problem is just swept under the carpet and the engineer works out the required air volume based on evaporation rates and heat losses, and the system supplies this air into the entire hall via a single supply duct. The air that is supplied has to be at a higher temperature than the pool hall in order to offset the heat losses for the hall. It will usually be supplied at temperatures approaching 40ºC! If this air is blown over the spectators it only increases their discomfort further. However, there IS a solution that is both practical AND cost-effective. The Recotherm solution is a dual-duct two-heater system. One duct

carries the majority of the air to the main pool hall, the other a smaller amount of air into the spectator area. Each duct has its own heater battery and separate temperature controls. This can be achieved with two separate air-handling units, but with Recotherm it can be achieved by just one, saving considerably on costs. How does it work? Under normal operating conditions, the main pool duct carries the air to heat the hall to the required temperature, usually supplied between 35ºC and 40ºC. However, the spectator area duct carries air at the set point of the pool hall. Therefore, if the pool hall is set for 30ºC, the supply air temperature to the spectator area will be at 30ºC. This doesn’t actually cool the spectator area, but on the other hand, it’s not being overheated, as it would be with supply air for the main pool hall. What’s also happening, crucially, is air movement over the spectator area - which has a cooling effect - at a temperature that will not affect the pool hall temperature; and, as the air contains the same amount of moisture as the air supplied into the pool hall via the main duct, the dehumidification effect is not compromised! On Gala days when you have a large number of people in the spectator area and only a few people actually swimming at any one time, your emphasis can change from looking predominantly at the comfort of the bathers to making the spectators feel more comfortable. To achieve this, we switch the control of the heater battery serving the spectator area from a duct mounted sensor to a sensor mounted in the spectator area. This way, we can provide cooled ambient air to the spectators which may or may not have been heated in the air to air heat recuperator, depending on the outside air temperature. We would also recommend lowering the pool hall temperature to 26ºC and switching the unit over to full fresh air which will have the effect of also lowering the relative humidity and making the conditions more comfortable for people who are fully-clothed. This can all be done from the flick of one ‘GALA DAY’ switch which can either be a software programmed switch, or a hard wired physical switch. It’s an extremely elegant, effective and, importantly cost-effective solution to the problem! This way costs can be controlled as low as possible by only using one air handling unit, but still provide conditions that are comfortable for both bather and spectator when appropriate.

Summit Leisure’s Range of Products Hits the Heights The range of static and retractable enclosures from Summit Leisure caters for every possible requirement. Low, medium and full height models in standard or bespoke design and the ability to span up to 24 meters puts the company in a position to be able to cover any requirement for just about any pool. All models are based on the same concept: Incredibly strong and attractive designed marine grade powder coated aluminium profiles available in any RAL colour and engineered in a choice of roof shapes. Toughened safety glass side and end wall glazing and a unique guiding mechanism that permits the enclosures to be trackless in most instances.

range but incorporates a very high standard of engineering and some unique features: trackless, choice of opaque or clear glass roof, louvered vents to the side of the unit for ventilation and the option to be motorised which makes it a serious alternative to traditional safety covers.

Combining the established UK name of Algarve Pool Enclosures with the French manufacturers PAC brand name of AquaTelescopic, Summit sell and install the product throughout the UK ,the Middle East and will shortly be undertaking projects in the United States. They sell direct to the end user but are increasingly working with pool builders. Summit have been working with PAC for over 10 years. During that time they have seen the product range and innovative engineering ideas established in the traditional retractable range incorporated into new concepts of pool enclosures. Examples of this are the recently introduced Visio Enclosure, a static building with a sliding roof. This has proved to be a very popular cover in the rapidly developing swimspa market. This year the Ultima low profile enclosure has been introduced. Designed to compete with the very low cost low covers that are on the market, the Ultima is in the same price

2014 sees the addition of the Allseas spa to the company’s product range. Allseas manufacture a vast range of spas and swimspas. It’s not just the large product range that attracted Summit to the partnership. The attention to detail, continual innovation of product design and the very impressive build quality were the major factors. Their SwimSpa with an automatic sliding deck is just one example of this.

Utilising the Algarve Aquatelescopic enclosure and the Allseas SwimSpa range makes an interesting and exciting combined package. An indoor pool at a very attractive price!

Established in 1992 LA architects has built a strong reputation in the design and construction of many prestigious projects and some alluring simple buildings. Ninety percent of the Practice’s work has been based in the sports and leisure industry, a market they understand well. The Practice’s portfolio also includes theatres, innovation centres, art galleries and health projects. LA architects’ studio, near Brighton, is ideally situated to undertake commissions throughout the UK though our work has taken us to China, Bosnia, Greece, France and Hungary. They also now have associate practices in Gothenberg, Belfast and Italy. As a Royal Institute of British Architects Chartered Practice all LA’s architectural staff are members of the Architects Registration Board, the Royal Institute of British Architects and have membership to the Society of British Interior Designers. Creativity can be aligned with commerciality and bringing all aspects of good performance together is essential for this Studio. “ We create buildings for human happiness. ••We listen. ••We consider the design in detail. ••We question the given norms and understand the rules of our field. ••We constantly strive to improve. ••We deliver on time and on budget and never let our clients down. ••We understand commercial values — design can make money. ••Sustainability and the delivery of low energy buildings are fundamental to our approach. ••BIM and the future is embedded in our work.” One of the core strengths of the Practice lies in the collaborative

approach to the whole design and construction process. Acting as Lead Consultant in architecture and interior design LA brings together a fully respected and committed team of Project Managers, Specialist Engineering Consultants and Cost Consultants. Recently completed projects are Haven Point in South Shields, and The Glass Mill in Lewisham, London. Haven Point was opened in November 2013 by His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge. Council Leader, Councillor Iain Malcolm, said “Haven Point is a world-class facility and demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in the future of our residents and attracting more visitors to the borough” This new leisure complex is part of South Tyneside Council’s commitment to regenerate South Shields and the seafront to make it an all year round premier coastal resort. At the feasibility stage is became clear that a comprehensive range of facilities would be required to meet the needs of the stakeholders and local community. Thus the centre includes a 25m swimming pool with moveable floor, teaching pool and leisure water with two water slides play-rig and other water features. This is complimented with dry facilities that include a fitness suite, healthy living suite with treatment rooms two multipurpose rooms with dedicated services and kitchens a visitor centre, education rooms and an external park/amphitheatre. The Glass Mill was opened in April 2013 and has recently received the ‘Best Built Project – Community Scale Scheme’ award at the London Planning Awards in February 2014. Judges commended the Glass Mill, for its ‘transformational impact on the wider area, benefits

“The buildings I love the most are the ones where people have worked together with a main aim of producing something great and that the people themselves have enjoyed the process,” he said.

to the local community, design and ingenuity.’ Councillor Alan Smith, Lewisham’s Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We’re delighted that The Glass Mill has triumphed at this year’s London Planning Awards.” This brightly coloured building was undertaken through collaboration between Barrett London and Lewisham Council, and involved considerable public, stakeholder and generative consultation. The facilities include a 25m competition swimming and 20m teaching pool, both with moveable floors, spectator seating and a judge’s platform. On the first floor there is a gym and two dance studios along with a wellness area and treatment rooms, sauna and steam room. Further areas include a club room, climbing wall, crèche, reception/café area and meeting rooms. The front elevation comprises 1,400 coloured glass panels that are back illuminated and respond to the sounds of the city outside the building. This was undertaken by artist Phil Coy and LA architects. Both projects, as with all their schemes, are breaking through client’s commercial expectations and are proving to be exciting, popular and financially successful. Mike Lawless, Director of LA, told UK Construction that it is the collaborative approach, such as is demonstrated in these projects, that the Company thrives on.

Cresta Leisure Ltd Creating a splash in the leisure pool industry

28

Dorchester based Cresta Leisure Ltd has been building swimming pools since 1986 and specialising in the UK holiday sector since 1989. Between 1989 and 2000, Cresta was one of the main pool contractors - designing, building and renovating indoor and outdoor pools for Haven Holidays when they were owned by the Rank Group plc. In the year 2000 Haven Holidays were acquired by Bourne Leisure and Cresta lost its ‘biggest customer’ to other pool contractors that were already supplying Bourne. Undeterred, and knowing that the package offered by Cresta was of great value to this market sector, Managing Director, Tim Bareham worked tirelessly to maintain a presence in this specialist field. Such specialism does not just relate to contractors. Previous successful projects undertaken with specialist Architects, Structural Engineers and Quantity Surveyors soon became the key to Cresta regaining a significant presence in the Holiday Park and Leisure Club sector.

Holiday Park owners and operators require appealing facilities for their customers. The facilities must be designed and built to withstand extremely high bather loads for much of the year. They must be cost effective in terms of return on Capital investment and they must be completed in a very short period over the winter months, when the Parks are closed. After 25 years’ continued success in this field, Cresta Leisure can now legitimately boast that they are True Professionals. Working with the same group of specialist architects and project planners, Cresta Leisure has become a pivotal part of many Holiday Park swimming pool projects, involved from the design stage right through to commissioning. Managing Director, Tim Bareham came into swimming pool contracting from a background in Mechanical Engineering; so fluid dynamics, filtration and mechanical services design are all undertaken in house. He has been a leading player in the UK Swimming Pool Industry, having been President

about every conceivable application in the Holiday Sector. Illustrated here is a selection of a few different Proteus Pool projects undertaken by Cresta Leisure over the past five years. One Client was so pleased with the lazy river completed on 2011 in North Wales, they contracted for another in Yorkshire the following year. Requiring a “special outdoor pool facility” for private owners, Cresta provided the illustrated infinity edge pool with water features to compliment the new Owners’ exclusive bar and health spa. As more commercial operators have identified the suitability of the Proteus Pool system, more innovative and exciting projects have been undertaken which incorporate infinity edges, beach entry, hydro spa sections and even integral automatic pool covers. In addition to the suitability of Proteus technology for New Pool projects, there is a unique renovation system that provides a very

29

of SPATA, the UK Pool Trade Association and is now an honorary inspector of SPATA, charged with inspecting other Contractors’ work to ensure standards are maintained. In carrying out these duties, he has had the opportunity to see a great deal of other people’s work in swimming pools and glean many trade secrets, be they positive or negative. Such market intelligence has been invaluable in keeping up with industry developments from all over the world. Conventional pool construction techniques are not at all conducive to meeting tight budgets or completing contracts in very short time scales. For instance, the required curing times for reinforced concrete pool tanks, waterproof renders and pool tile fixing and grouting, even with curing accelerators, make it impossible to complete a swimming pool and have it filled, balanced and heated in the 12-16 week window normally available with Holiday Park Pool Projects. When carrying out “Fast track” pool contracts, particularly during the depths of a British winter, the Client and Contractor are subject to serious risks of premature failure if curing times are ignored. To mitigate this risk, Cresta Leisure now specify an engineered pool construction system from A&T Spa in Italy that is based on stainless steel panels known worldwide as The Myrtha Pool System. Myrtha pools have been installed throughout the world since 1961, predominantly for competition for long or short course pools. They have been installed in the UK for well over 25 years, but mostly in municipal or educational applications. When Cresta Leisure discovered that there were nine Myrtha pools to be supplied for the London Olympics 2012, Tim Bareham decided that they should investigate their suitability for the holiday park, hotel and leisure market. It soon became apparent that there was a pool system available from A&T Spa that was pretty much perfect. Known as the Proteus Pool System, it is exactly the same design, material and manufacture as Myrtha but for pools of up to 1.2m depth of water. Each pool is bespoke designed and manufactured in Italy and generally incorporates deck level circulation, which hitherto has been prohibitively expensive in this highly competitive market place. Identifying the suitability of the system for the Holiday Industry, Cresta has spent the past five years working with architects and clients to design and specify swimming pool projects for just
