For nearly 20 years Pro-Mark Media has been circulating three national construction, civil engineering and architectural publications across the UK and Ireland. UK Construction, Building Scotland and Construction Ireland magazines have become geographically some of the largest industry publications in circulation. The hard copy and online (feel free to view our magazines at www.pro-mark.org. uk) publications have gained an extensive subscription rate with a fantastic readership of key specifiers and decision makers throughout all sectors under the construction and architectural banner.
Regular editorials are supplied from, and written in conjunction with: SPATA - Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association, BSPF - British Swimming Pool Federation, BISHTA - British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association, ISPE - Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, PWTAG - Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group SPATEX Exhibition UK Pool & Spa Expo
Following the success of a Wet Leisure profile within UK Construction magazine and continuing conversations with major swimming pool and spa authorities such as SPATA and the BSPF, it was found there was NO dedicated publication focused on the swimming pool industry targeting the construction and architectural sector. In order to deliver a publication of this nature SwimCONSTRUCT magazine was born and is now the only dedicated publication highlighting the direct link between the two industries. The launch of SwimCONSTRUCT was highly successful and the magazine has featured a range of exhibitions and profiles on leading swimming pool and spa companies over its past issues. SwimCONSTRUCT aims to provide the latest industry news, expo previews and reviews, project updates and company profiles within each issue.
On publication, SwimCONSTRUCT will be circulated via hard copy and digitally online to over: 250+ pool Installers, 25,500+ architectural design practices, 12,500+ construction companies, 1,200+ council offices, All leisure, health & NHS trusts throughout UK & Ireland, National hotel/leisure chains including Accor, De Vere, Hilton, Ibis, 180+ leisure development organisations. Pro-Mark is more than happy to help with all aspects of promotion to one of the largest circulations in the UK and Ireland’s construction industries to enable the opportunity to gain specifier or preferred bidder status, putting your company, services and products at the top of all swimming pool construction contact listings.

PREPARE TO TAKE THE PLUNGE AT THIS YEAR’S LIW POOL & SPA SECTOR The countdown for Leisure Industry Week (LIW) is under way and the team are busy preparing for the annual event in the calendar for all leisure industry professionals to network, view the latest advances, trends and take part in the industry’s current debates.
exhibitors and visitors with the aim of growing and improving the show year on year. The Pool & Spa sector of the show is shaping up to be a really exciting element of the show, highlighting what’s new, progressing or essential within the aquatic industry.
The show returns to Birmingham’s NEC from 30 September – 2 October and will categorise exhibitors into six core leisure sectors: Pool & Spa, Health & Fitness, Play, Eat & Drink, Sport and Leisure Facilities, creating the perfect venue for professionals across the industry to network and explore possible cross sector opportunities.
“Our aim is always to maximise the return on investment for exhibitors in terms of sales generation and to create an enjoyable, educational and worthwhile experience for visitors. To aid this, we’ve made The STA Swim Zone a central feature this year to allow visitors to see how they can increase the offering they give their communities through pool-based activity.”
Pool & Spa Sector The Pool and Spa sector will provide the annual meeting place for the UK’s commercial pool and spa professionals. From digital ‘Learn to Swim’ schemes, pool based alternative therapy techniques and filtration systems through to swimwear, pool platforms and towels, textiles and accessories, there really is something for everyone within the sector. To make the Pool & Spa sector better than ever, at this year’s show, The STA Swim Zone (stand STA01) will be a central feature on the show floor. This will ensure the sector receives the greatest amount of exposure to visitors, whilst providing a range of exciting swimming, lifesaving and pool plant demonstrations. The sessions are all designed to show operators how they can cost effectively maximise the revenue from their pool facility.
Pool & Spa Exhibitor News There will be a number of new launches at this year’s show. Launching from industry specialist, Ferno, in collaboration with the RLSS UK, (stand W630), is a new pool extraction board designed to make pool rescues much more efficient. This innovation marks a significant development in the rescue of casualties with suspected spinal injuries. Requiring just two trained users as opposed to the traditional four, less lifeguards are drawn into a rescue, enabling operators to continue to monitor other pool users whilst a poolside rescue is taking place without the recruitment of additional poolside staff. Tara Dillon, Executive Director of IQL UK, said: “This year’s Leisure Industry Week provides the ideal platform to introduce the new pool extraction board to the UK health and fitness market. The IQL UK continually strives to support the leisure industry through the provision of the highest standard of qualifications and product innovation. This new extraction board reflects our dedication to addressing the evolving needs of leisure providers.” Hippo Leisure (stand W210) specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of creative water play products and will be showcasing their unique manufacturing capabilities and designs. From Play Platforms to Flume Slides, Hippo Leisure can create a water wonderland for all ages, abilities, budgets and pool shapes. Also at the show, Majestic Towels (stand W550) will be launching their new Micro Terry Bath Robe, a supremely comfortable and practical garment that will last longer than 100% towelling and velour alternatives making it the perfect option for leisure facilities, hotels and spas. They will also be showcasing their new ‘Berry’ shade to their 100% Cotton Standard Towel collection.
Commenting on the Pool & Spa sector of LIW 2014, James Samuel, LIW Event Director, says: “LIW has maintained its position as the UK’s leading leisure exhibition because we take on board feedback from
Whilst the STA (stand W526) will be launching and demonstrating their brand new Photometer, a digital technology allowing real time analysis, alerts and reporting, live in the swimming pool. Visitors will also be able to see a number of live swimming, lifesaving, fitness classes and pool plant demonstrations, as well as hearing from some of the UK’s leading suppliers of aquatic services and products to the leisure industry.
Having launched in September last year, the Register of Aquatic Professionals (RAPs) will return to LIW to share their progress and plans for the future. The aquatic register has been developed by the three leading industry organisations, the ASA, the RLSS UK and the STA, to showcase the skills and qualifications of registered aquatic professionals. At LIW, there will be an opportunity for visitors to learn and develop skills as RAPs host free aquatic specific workshops and seminars, endorsed by SkillsActive (stand W200).
Networking Recognising the importance of networking opportunities to visitors and exhibitors, LIW will this year introduce the ability for registered visitors and exhibitors to pre-schedule one to one meetings. Whilst back by popular demand, ukactive will host their VIP Drinks Reception on Wednesday, 5-7pm, followed by the LIW Drinks Reception, open to all, from 7pm-11pm.
Demonstration Areas As well as The STA Swim Zone, the show will include a number of demonstration areas highlighting the latest workout innovations. These include the TABATA™ Group Exercise Arena, where TABATA™ will be demonstrating their newly formatted workouts, brand and launch campaign. The CPD Arena, sponsored by Star Trac, will host Star Trac Spinning classes with International Spinning Instructor, Sandro Morelli. In addition, The Fitpro Functional Training Zone will include TRX Team Training and TRX Group Rip Performance workouts with Dan McDonogh, TRX Senior Manager of Group Training & Development. The LIW Live! Stage was a really popular addition to last year’s show and, as a result, will be making a key contribution again this year. The schedule will include live question and answer sessions with high profile sports stars and new innovation demonstrations. A full programme will be made available on the LIW schedule once confirmed.
New to the show this year, LIW will be encouraging visitors to kick-start their day with morning workouts held by exhibitors. These will take place 7.30am-9.30am in the exhibition hall on Wednesday and Thusday morning.

SC NEWS
New Preston multi-use leisure centre gets underway After many months of planning, work to build the new multi-million pound leisure, community and youth skills centre in Preston started in June. Pellikaan Construction, appointed by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council to build the new facilities, will begin by setting up their site office and moving construction equipment on to the site. They will then demolish the old Tattenham Community Centre to enable them to build a new access road, to be named Preston Manor Road. The centre, which is a joint venture with Surrey County Council, is expected to be complete in late summer 2015. It will feature a 25 metre six-lane swimming pool, teaching pool, state-of-the-art 60-station gym, dance and exercise studio, fourcourt sports hall, four five-a-side football pitches, space for community activities,
café, crèche, wet and dry changing rooms, a neighbouring youth skills centre and parking. Pellikaan will also be responsible for making a range of improvements to Merland Rise Recreation Ground. Cllr Natalie Bramhall, Executive Member for Property and Regeneration, said: “It’s really exciting that we’ll soon start to see things happening on-site after all the planning that has gone into this project. I’m sure that, like me, local people are looking forward to watching the ambitious plans for these fantastic facilities become a reality, improving the local area and making it a better place to live. “If you want to keep up to date with progress on the project, join our Preston regeneration Facebook group.” Cllr Ros Mill, Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “The new centre will provide fantastic, modern facilities for residents in
Preston and the surrounding area, improving opportunities to stay fit and healthy.” Denise Le Gal, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Business Services, said: “Improving Surrey as a place to live and work is what we’re all about, so it’s exciting that this work is getting started that will help the local community thrive, grow our economy and boost young people’s skills and future prospects.” Cllr Bramhall added: “We have Pellikaan’s assurance that they will keep disruption to a minimum and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience residents may experience while we make these improvements to their community, but the end result will be well worth it.” Affected areas will be cordoned off during the project to ensure public safety and residents are advised to please adhere to cordons and safety advisory notices.

New £9.5M Witham Leisure Centre opens its doors The new Witham Leisure Centre opened its doors to the public on Tuesday 12th August, letting residents from all over the district and beyond enjoy its state-of-the-art facilities. Plans for the £9.5M leisure centre were first drawn up in 2011, and construction at the Spinks Lane site began in spring 2013. Braintree District Council has worked with contractors Barr Construction and leisure providers Fusion Lifestyle to ensure that the Witham Leisure Centre is delivered on time and in impeccable condition, ready to welcome keen new users and those who have visited the neighbouring Bramston Sports Centre throughout its 40 year history. Councillor Jo Beavis, Cabinet Member for People and Participation, said: “I’m very proud to be able to announce the opening of the new Witham Leisure Centre. This is an extremely exciting moment for the town and for the district, and one that is immensely fulfilling for everyone who has been involved in the project from start to finish. “From the very beginning, people in Witham have taken this project to heart, and we’ve had the privilege to work alongside so many groups in the town and beyond to ensure that the Witham Leisure Centre meets a wide range of needs. The Bramston Sports Centre has served the town well but is no
longer fit for purpose – the facilities in the Witham Leisure Centre are state-of-theart and represent a huge leap forward, so we can continue to provide great services in an outstanding new site. “Above all, we hope that the new centre becomes an important and much-loved resource for everyone in the community to enjoy and benefit from.” The new Witham Leisure Centre features a six-lane 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool with a moveable floor and an overlooking spectator area, and is also host to excellent wet and dry change facilities. Residents and sports club members are able to enjoy a variety of facilities within the centre including a 50 station gym with the latest equipment, new fitness studios with a brand new class programme, two squash courts with a moveable wall and a multi-purpose room, and can relax in the centre’s poolside sauna and steam room. Mark Johnson, Divisional Business Manager for Fusion Lifestyle, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce the opening of this most superb leisure facility. It has been an excellent project and working in partnership with Braintree District Council has been a delight. We are both extremely pleased with the end result, that being a facility that
Witham and indeed the Braintree district can be proud of. The leisure centre staff and I would like to welcome the whole community to come and join us now and see for yourselves and sample what’s on offer. David Mason, Project Manager at Barr Construction, added: “Barr Construction has a track record of delivering state-ofthe-art sports and leisure facilities across the UK and we are extremely proud to have delivered a first-class sporting facility for Braintree District Council. “The new leisure centre is now ready to open its doors to the people of Witham and we’re confident the facility will be a fantastic and well-used resource by the local community as well as athletes from across the Essex area.”
Wick Community Campus work begins Preparation work for a new £48.5M community campus in Wick has begun with the first turf cut at the site of the new facility. The Wick Community Campus is set to replace the existing Wick High School, South Primary and Pultneytown Academy Primary School and incorporates a new library and swimming pool in a design which is set to serve both pupils and people within the town and the surrounding area. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, along with pupils from the three participating schools took part in the event alongside representatives of hub North Scotland, the driving force behind the planning, procurement and delivery of communitybased projects across the north of Scotland. The innovative facility will consist of two senior school teaching wings as well as a separate primary school with its own access entrance. A special needs wing, sports block, library, swimming pool, fitness suite and three sports pitches will complete its offering. The project, which hub North Scotland will lead after being appointed as a development partner by the Highland Council, is the latest in the region to be delivered by the organisation, having recently led the construction of the new Tain Health Centre with a similar project in Forres and the new Inverness Royal Academy, all at various stages of development. Angus Macfarlane, Chief Executive of hub North Scotland, said: “This is a significant occasion for the Wick Community Campus project and it marks an exciting period of development not only for hub North Scotland and the contractors involved with the project, but more importantly for the pupils, parents and teachers themselves. “We are committed to delivering first class community facilities within the Highlands and this is another example of what we aim to achieve within this region. “We want the benefits of this sort of project to be really felt across the area they are being completed in and we’ll continue to do our utmost to allow this to happen. Whether it is through listening to feedback as the project develops or by engaging a local supply chain for the construction itself, ensuring the local economy gains from the process really does drive all of our operations.”
Serco appointed by Moirai to manage local waterpark receptionists to cleaning and catering staff. The Wet ‘n’ Wild waterpark offers over one kilometre of slides including the hurricane, the kamikaze, the abyss and calamity canyon. Work is already well underway on the development of a new reception, shop and café. The former gym and dance studios will be converted into specially designed children’s soft play and birthday party area, whilst the former health suite will become a dedicated family changing village. Kevin Thomas, Transition Director of Serco’s Leisure business said: “Wet ‘n’ Wild is a great facility and we are looking forward to transforming it together with Moirai Capital Investments to give it a new lease of life. We are working hard to get the complex ready for the summer opening with our teams busy re-configuring the reception, introducing new food into the café, and most importantly lowering admission prices”. Martin Barber, Chairman of Moirai Capital Investments said: “We are delighted to be investing in Wet ‘N’ Wild so that the people of North Shields can once again enjoy this great facility.”

Moirai Capital Investments has appointed Serco to manage and operate the Wet ‘n’ Wild waterpark in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. The waterpark, which went into administration in October 2013, was acquired by Moirai Capital Investments and leased to Serco for a period of 25 years. Moirai Capital Investments will transform and refurbish the waterpark into a modern family leisure attraction. Both Serco and Moirai Capital Investments have extensive experience in the leisure market; Serco manages 75 leisure centres across the UK including two national sports centres on behalf of Sport England. Moirai Capital Investments is a leading and experienced developer of sport, leisure and entertainment facilities in the UK, and together the two companies aim to create a leisure destination for the local and surrounding community of Tyne and Wear. It will take an investment in excess of £1.1M to transform the waterpark ready for opening in summer 2014. The project will bring a much needed employment boost to the area and Serco is already recruiting for various job vacancies at the waterpark from lifeguards and
GRK Interiors offer the installation and supply of a wide range of radiant heating products suitable for any application. For industry, offices and residential, in living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, and for any ceiling height. We have a solution to keep you warm and comfortable. What is Radiant Heating? The most recognisable radiant heat source is the sun, heating the earth from millions of miles away. The effect of radiant heat can be further experienced by standing in a room that has an open fire; the side of the body closest to the fire can feel the immediate effect of the warmth.
Radiant heat is the transfer of heat from a warm surface to a cold surface via infra red rays, travelling through the air without heating it; this prevents wasteful heat stratification associated with convection of warm air, typical of traditional heating systems. Many people expect heat to rise, but in fact it’s only warm air that rises because warm air is lighter than cold air. Radiant heating responds instantly to demand. There is no need to preheat a room.
Simply switch on and you start to feel the warmth very quickly. In practice the system would be used to ensure the fabric of the building is protected at all times, and would be at least 3 degrees lower than is currently calculated Warming the air creates convection current with hot air rising to the top of the room. The rising warm air is replaced by cold air and this creates a convection flow, with convection heating, such as traditional wall mounted radiators, much of the heat is
lost to the unoccupied upper space of a room – this is a real problem in rooms with high ceilings or pitched roofs. In fact, the air temperature may increase as much as 3°C for each vertical metre in a room. If warm air is lost through open windows or doors, more energy is required to reheat incoming cool air.

EVA delivers technological achievements... in luxurious style Fittings are often the make or break of a high-end pool installation. But, sometimes getting the right finish can come at a cost in terms of performance. However, according to Golden Coast, the exclusive distributor for EVA Optic light fittings in the UK, the Dutch lighting innovator’s complete lighting solution – in-pool and ambient - delivers on all counts. Shaun Adams, a Director at Golden Coast, explains: “When it comes to finish, EVA’s lighting is second-to-none. Their pool lights, for example, feature face plates that sit completely flush with the pool’s wall – creating a smoothto-touch surface that won’t detract from the bathing experience – certainly enhancing the overall look of the most stylish and luxurious pool installations.”
Healthy glow
When it comes to looking good, EVA Optic’s ambient lighting takes it one step further. Shaun explains: “The quality of white light output is just as critical to an installation. If you’re lighting is poor in this area, it could leave bathers looking washed out.” The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) indicates how accurately the colour of a lit object will appear compared with a daylight source. A CRI of less than 70 could make flesh tones appear grey.
“The light output by EVA Optic’s white pool lights maintains a high CRI (exceeding 80), so that bathers look healthy and full of vitality around the pool. In addition, the light output exhibits an excellent balance between strength and dispersion. “For example, EVA’s A-series lights will deliver 80% light output across an impressive 105° angle. This is essential for both the look and safety of an illuminated pool.”
Intelligent design
But, the smart, clean appearance and pure light performance of EVA Optic ambient lighting belies the technology lying within them. Shaun explains: “Heat dissipation can be an enemy of LED lights as overheating can dramatically shorten their longevity. Uniquely, EVA’s LED emitters are not PCBmounted as found in many other LED pool lights. Instead, they are bonded to the metal frame of the light. This enables the heat dissipated by the LED to be conducted directly into the frame so that it runs cooler. “In addition, the temperature of the LEDs on EVA’s ambient lighting is constantly monitored by an intelligent electronic ‘watchdog’. This ensures that a safe operation temperature ceiling
of 45°C can never be exceeded.” To achieve the ultimate in reliable performance, pool lights are sealed in a special resin that is safe to a pressure of 16 bar, a depth of 25m and temperature of 40°C – surpassing the requirement for swimming pool installations. “This guarantees no water ingress, particularly important in an environment where the light is installed permanently underwater and subjected to constant exposure to aggressive pool chemicals and temperature cycling.”
High efficiency
The light output of a 50-watt EVA Optic pool light will match that of a 400-watt halogen pool light – saving 87.5% in energy consumption alone. Shaun adds: “But that’s just the start. With zero maintenance required, less parts, maintenance and downtime, there are many more savings to be had. And thanks to their longer life expectancy of 60,000 hours, those savings continue to increase year on year.” For further information on EVA Optic, which is available in the UK exclusively through Golden Coast, visit goldenc.com or contact the Golden Coast Sales Team on 01271 378100.

New app from Sundance Spas and Golden Coast delivers practical benefits It seems like there’s a mobile app for just about everything these days, but while some are genuinely useful others can be seen as a bit of a gimmick. For owners of Sundance Spas, the new SunSmart app definitely falls into the ‘practical’ category. Golden Coast, the exclusive UK distributor for Sundance Spas and its world-leading range of spa and hot tub products, was involved in the app’s beta testing, supporting the manufacturer’s development team, and believes that the app’s advanced communication capabilities deliver real value to customers and dealers alike. “This is not just another app for app’s sake,” says Dominic Adams, a Director
at Golden Coast. “The ability to control a spa, adjust its settings and check on its status remotely is very handy. “But what sets SunSmart apart is its ability to communicate error messages to dealers should they occur – allowing them to respond quickly to any issue.” Designed to give users complete control – wherever they may be – 24/7, SunSmart can be used to check, activate and adjust features including: heating, lighting and jet pumps. “The status dashboard, for example, lets spa owners make changes to their filtration settings and select from a variety of preset or customisable programme modes.
“In addition, it gives service reminders and indicates service notifications with a yellow warning triangle. Simply tapping the triangle will immediately inform the dealership that attention is needed.” The SunSmart app is available as a free download for easy installation on a smart phones or tablet. The app is used in conjunction with the SunSmart kit. This system is installed in the spa and is linked to the home WiFi network via a SunSmart bridge which can be connected quickly and easily to a wireless router. UV water treatment made easy With the latest advances in UV disinfection technology, keeping water safe from unhealthy or undesirable organisms need no longer be just a case of waging chemical warfare. For residential swimming pool and spa owners, the UV options now available from leading water treatment specialist Triogen – via Golden Coast – include cost-effective TR2 units which save on both capital and running costs while improving water quality. The TR2 low-pressure UV system is used in conjunction with chemical treatments, substantially reducing the amount of chlorine or other sanitiser needed. This means lower levels of chemicals in the water and lower chemical bills. Irradiation by its high-output UV lamps is highly effective in controlling algae and killing chlorine-resistant organisms. What’s more, it releases no by-products into the water. Electricity consumption is minimised by the high efficiency of the low-pressure lamps and is enhanced by an automatic pre-set internal flow switch which shuts the unit down when there is no flow. The units are compact and are designed for easy, inexpensive installation and connection. Maintenance costs are reduced by a robust construction that includes a 100% corrosionresistant, UV-inhibited, polymeric reactor vessel and long (18 months) UV lamp life. There are four models in the TR2 range, giving a choice of two, three or four UV lamps, according to the flow to be treated – which can be anything up to 40 cubic metres per hour. A powerful UV dose of 30 mJ per square centimetre can be delivered. Triogen water treatment systems are distributed in the UK by Golden Coast, whose Managing Director Jamie Adams says: “Triogen’s developments have given pool and spa owners many new options and have brought increased levels of confidence in the health of wet leisure environments. The Triogen range, which includes a wide variety of systems for different circumstances, can offer a costeffective solution for every owner.” For further information, call Golden Coast on 01271 378100, email swimmer@ goldenc.com or visit the web shop at www.GCTrade.co.uk.

Construction work is underway for the new £15M flagship leisure facility for Oldham town centre. Councillor Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader was on-site in June with delivery partner Willmott Dixon’s Managing Director (Northern) Anthony Dillon to mark the start of building work on the Oldham Sports Centre, which will be located at the junction of Manchester Street and St Domingo Street. The construction firm has signed up to the Get Oldham Working Construction Charter which seeks to link physical regeneration projects to employment and training opportunities for local residents and supply chain opportunities for local businesses. The local authority’s charter seeks to link physical regeneration projects to creating new employment and training opportunities for local residents and supply chain opportunities for local businesses. Developers and contractors who adopt the principles of the charter are undertaking a voluntary commitment to help us produce work-related opportunities for the people of Oldham. The new sports centre will have the correct specifications to attract major regional competitions in some sports and attract televised events. The facility will act as a physical bridge linking Oldham College to Oldham Sixth Form College, helping to deliver our vision for a coherent campus site with first-class facilities. Councillor Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: “It’s exciting to see the diggers on the site today after all the detailed planning and preparation. “Local people have been waiting a long time for new facilities in Oldham and residents are beginning to see a number of ambitious developments taking shape – like the cinema-led complex at the Old Town Hall. “A new state-of-the-art flagship leisure facility for Oldham is an important piece of the regeneration jigsaw coming together. “We are also delighted that Willmott Dixon has signed up to the Construction

Minimising the risks of Legionella bacteria in public buildings Ian Walker, Gaffey Technical Services Ltd
16
HSE guidelines L8(third edition 2000), part 1 section 19 (c) states that “a reasonable foreseeable risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria exists in hot and cold water systems”. Section 21 states that a water system includes ALL plant, equipment and components i.e. pipework, pumps, feed tanks, valves, thermal mixing valves, showers, heat exchangers, chillers, etc. It is important that the system is considered as a whole, especially dead legs and calorifiers, which are often found to be sources of contamination. Unfortunately, Legionella bacteria are commonly found in rivers, reservoirs and lakes, and can survive in temperatures between 6° and 60°C. They are considered dormant at temperatures below 20°C, but can quickly multiply at temperatures between 20°C and 45°C, commonly found in commercial buildings and leisure facilities. Current theory suggests that environmental Legionella enters a system via incoming mains or borehole supplies, then rapidly multiply given favourable temperatures and conditions. Modern infrastructure contains complicated pipework containing dead legs and thermal mixing valves, and may also include cooling towers and evaporative condensers. These provide ideal breeding grounds for any pathogens that enter the system. Other factors affecting calorifiers include sludge, scale, rust and in particular, biofilms. It is thought that Legionella and other pathogens such as MRSA and C.Difficile are able to “hide” in biofilms and survive pasteurization and disinfection. It is the ability to penetrate and disperse biofilms that makes chlorine dioxide so effective in the fight against Legionella infestations. Energy conservation measures implemented for all new buildings are making cold water systems more vulnerable to microbial contamination. There is an increased tendency to store large volumes of water to cope with surge demands, fire suppression
and continuity of supply in the event of mains disruption. This creates a potential hazard as the water picks up environmental heat, and summer temperatures lead to UK mains supply temperatures exceeding 18°C in some cases. There are no UK OFWAT regulations stating a maximum temperature for mains water supply. It only has to achieve potable standard. This increased stagnation of water in storage often causes the primary disinfectant (chlorine) residual to fall below 0.1 mg/L over time, losing the ability to properly disinfect. Secondary treatment using ultraviolet radiation is often recommended and installed as part of the building services. This can either treat the incoming supply before the storage tank or treat the water leaving the tank prior to distribution. Whilst UV is very effective at disrupting the DNA of pathogens at the point of contact, it does not provide a secondary residual disinfection further downstream. UV treatment also has a detrimental effect on residual levels of oxidizing biocides and can deplete chlorine residuals by as much as 30%. UV effectiveness is greatly reduced by turbidity and impurities in water and it is also ineffective for biofilm removal and prevention. As has been reported before, biofilms are thought to be responsible for the incubation and growth of the majority of water-borne pathogens. Another alternative treatment method, using Copper/Silver ions, may provide a degree of disinfection in the general body of the water. However, it fails to effectively deal with biofilms, so is less effective in older buildings where pipework surfaces have aged. There are also practical problems, such as scaling of the ionisation electrodes in hard waters often found in the UK. There is also concern over long term exposure on the human body of silver ion levels greater than 80 ppb in drinking waters, therefore it cannot be considered a long term practical disinfection treatment regime in many applications.
There are two well proven chlorine dioxide treatment methods for hot water systems:
a) For once-through single draw-off hot water systems, chlorine dioxide can be dosed proportionally to the cold water intake stream at between 0.5 to 1mg/L. This will prevent harmful pathogens from seeding the system at the point of entry, and will also remove biofilms from the calorifier and hot water pipework surfaces. b) For ring main hot water circulatory systems often found in large hospitals and buildings, chlorine dioxide can be applied at between 0.3 – 0.7 mg/L and controlled by use of a Redox electrode and analyser. This requires a specially built chlorine dioxide generator with thermally tolerant component parts. Both the above methods of dosing chlorine dioxide have proven to be effective for many buildings and applications if applied and maintained correctly. Gaffey Technical Services Ltd design and manufacture a full range of ChloriDOS® chlorine dioxide on-site generators in sizes suitable for all applications, from small care homes to large leisure facilities, offices, hotels and hospitals. ChloriDOS® systems can be connected to BMS, or via mobile data service to a central server for access anywhere in the world. Alarm conditions can be relayed to relevant responsible persons and water treatment contractors for instant alerts to potential problems. ChloriDOS® LITE chlorine dioxide generator. Silver stabilized hydrogen peroxide has also been used as a secondary disinfection method in soft water regions, particularly in Scotland. Although this is a strong oxidising agent similar to chlorine dioxide, it has not gained widespread approval for continuous potable applications, again, due to concerns over the effect of silver ions on the human body. Hydrogen peroxide is also a dangerous substance and poses a greater COSHH risk, due to the fact it needs to be stored on-site. In the past, a popular method of supplementing the primary water disinfectant was to boost the incoming chlorine residual levels to between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/L by using a dosing pump connected to a pulsing water meter and chlorine analyser. Although this approach was deemed suitable, increasing concerns have been raised regarding chlorine by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), which are thought to be carcinogenic. Also, chlorine is not effective at removing biofilms - “Chlorine dioxide is five times more effective at attacking biofilms than chlorine alone” – Dr.Tom Makin, advisor to the Department of Health. The most commonly used defence against Legionella proliferation in hot water systems is thermal pasteurisation. This is the practice of raising the temperature of the water system to over 70°C, then circulating the water for at least one hour. Each outlet tap and appliance should be run sequentially for at least five minutes with the outlet not falling below 60°C. For this to be effective, the whole water system needs to be well insulated to avoid unacceptable heat loss. There are three major drawbacks to this method: ••Thermal mixing valves (TMVs) used in modern buildings are impossible to thermally disinfect at greater than 60°C due to design (they are used to maintain a water temperature not in excess of 44°C as an anti-scald measure). ••Modern complex buildings contain many dead legs and hidden draw-off points so it is virtually impossible for all parts of the system to reach effective pasteurisation temperatures for the required duration to give an effective kill of Legionella bacteria. ••With current energy prices, thermal disinfection is becoming increasingly expensive, not only for the fuel costs to raise adequate temperatures in the calorifiers, but also the manpower required to effectively flush all outlets; in a very large buildings such as hospitals there may be over 200 outlet points. Modern buildings may incorporate automatic flushing devices which are activated via a BMS system. Although thermal pasteurisation can be considered a stop-gap measure, it is a poor long term solution in the context of water and energy reduction schemes. In an ideal world, keeping cold water systems well below 20°C and hot water systems above 45°C should reduce the risk of a Legionella outbreak to statistically low levels, when combined with HSE L8 recommendation guidance. However, positive Legionella samples are frequently detected in many commercial and municipal water systems, indicating that simple temperature management may not be sufficient. ACOP guidelines say that the risk from exposure to Legionella should be prevented or controlled: precautions should include the provision of water treatment techniques. Section 173 advocates the use of chlorine dioxide, dosed to a maximum level of 0.5 mg/L. The benefits of using chlorine dioxide include: ••Rapid kill of a broad spectrum of pathogens including Legionella, MRSA, C.Difficile, fungi, yeasts and moulds. ••Breakdown and removal of biofilms, particularly in old, badly scaled and rusted pipework, especially suited for buildings with repeated positive Legionella sample results. ••Can be applied continuously to drinking waters, unlike silver ion based treatments. Residual disinfection levels can also be easily and cheaply detected using a wide selection of commercially available online analysers and controllers. ••Energy savings from a reduction in the need for thermal pasteurisation, coupled with potential for lower hot water storage temperatures, without compromising safety.
Those who ‘get’ marketing.... and those who don’t I’m often asked by existing and potential customers what makes company ‘A’ (usually one of their more successful competitors) significantly more successful than company ‘B’ (usually themselves if they’re struggling or not reaching their full potential). When pondering it, the following common questions come up repeatedly.
They know their conversion rate.
Do they sell better products? No - I have worked for two of the world’s leading hot tub brands where two different dealers selling identical products from the same brand can produce radically different results at opposite ends of the scale.
They regard any failures as vital and unavoidable steps in the path to success.
Are they in a better area? No - again, I’ve had dealers who, based on the population and demographic makeup of the their locale should have been selling mountains more product compared to their colleagues in less salubrious areas, and the reverse has very often been the case.
They are aware of the ‘sunk cost fallacy’, and avoid falling into its trap.
Do they offer better levels of customer service? No - I have worked with companies who gave exemplary, above and beyond the call of duty, levels of customer service - including dropping chemicals round to customers in their car on the same day they ordered, and attending to breakdowns on Christmas Day - and still struggle finding and winning new customers in comparison to those who, in their eyes, seem to get away with doing the bare minimum. Do they have huge marketing budgets? No; certainly not at the outset. In fact, the best ones, for reasons I’ll share later don’t even set one! Some of the biggest companies in our industry (and others) started from nothing and built up their empires from there.
They know their cost per enquiry, and cost per sale. They know that most of what they do will fail, and embrace this.
They embrace unsubscribes.
They are constantly testing. They understand that the essence of marketing hasn’t changed in decades, but the ways in which they can successfully reach potential customers is constantly in flux. They know that marketing is a never-ending and constantly evolving journey, not a destination. They do not let their own beliefs and prejudices colour decisions they make about their marketing. They seek the knowledge of others where they have gaps in their skills. They chase quality over quantity.
As I’ve noted previously, the one thing that ALWAYS - without exception - divides them is their marketing, and how good they are at it over their competition. But, that can’t be the whole story, can it? Think about it for a second - marketing is not rocket science, or achieved with a splash of some magic sauce (despite what a lot of the ‘gurus’ and snake oil salesmen out there would like you to believe). Like playing the guitar, learning to drive, or learning a foreign language, it’s just simply a matter of acquiring knowledge, then applying it and executing on it. That’s it! So, if that’s the case, if that’s really all there is to it, why isn’t every company in our industry a demon at marketing? Why are such a small number doing so very well and seemingly leaving the majority behind? Well, because the simple fact is most companies don’t acquire the knowledge, don’t apply it, and don’t execute on it. That’s the part that’s missing and the part which differentiates those who seem to effortlessly prosper in good times or bad, where others muddle along as best they can, or struggle or even fail. You have to ‘get’ marketing first before you will then go out and acquire the knowledge, then apply it and execute on it. So, in order to model the behaviours of those who ‘get’ marketing and enable you to be as successful, what are the key character traits shared by those who ‘get’ it, and those who don’t? Here’s a list of many of the one’s I’ve identified. They know the lifetime value of a customer.
18
They regard marketing as ‘buying customers’. They don’t see marketing as a ‘cost’, and therefore don’t set a marketing budget (OK, they do, but often they’ll pick an arbitrary figure just to keep a resident bean counter happy). They profile their customers.
They don’t get involved in the price game. They have a clear knowledge of different customer types (or ‘personas’), and know which ones to target, and which to avoid. They know the difference between a ‘price buyer’, and someone who’s trying to negotiate a better price. They religiously follow-up all their enquiries to a conclusion, and have systems in place to do this. They ensure that their marketing campaigns still happen, no matter what else is going on in the day to day. They know there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and therefore don’t bother trying to chase one. They are prepared to invest in their success. Above all, they take action - acquire knowledge, apply it, and implement it. OK, so each of these points is probably a subject for an article in itself, but I hope you find this piece useful and hope it has provoked some thought. If you’d like me to elaborate on any point, please feel free to drop me an email at dorian@doricmarketing.co.uk and I’ll be happy to explain.

Green light for £5.3M Blackbrook pool-spa complex Plans to build a new £5.3M swimming pool and spa at Blackbrook in Taunton got the go ahead in August, marking another milestone in the scheme to provide first class leisure facilities in the county town. The pool and spa will be built on a site next to the existing leisure centre at Blackbrook and will replace the ageing pool in St James Street, which has become increasingly expensive to maintain. The development will see a 25m six-lane pool, a smaller learner pool, spa and treatment rooms, changing village, a café and kitchen and storage space. The decision to build the pool complex follows an in-depth review of swimming provision in the Borough that found a new pool was needed as the baths in St James Street pool were near the end of their life. Blackbrook was chosen as it already hosts the popular leisure centre. Sports pitches close to the planned pool and spa will be retained and “buffered”
by a safety area to avoid any clash between the new buildings and the playing areas. Concerns were raised by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) about the depth of the pool, but their concerns were allayed by the reassurance that the pool depth will range from 0.9m-1.2m. Dense scrub near the site will need to be cleared. Some evidence that dormice may be present in that area has been found. A special licence will be needed to clear the undergrowth and a new habitat will be created for the tiny creatures. The plans include space for car parking and space for coaches for school children using the pool. Councillor Catherine Herbert, responsible for sports, parks and leisure, said: “I am delighted that we now have planning approval for the new pool and spa. This means we can now move to the next stage. “Our aim as a council is to ensure Taunton
Deane has first class leisure provision to complement our growth plans. We have recently upgraded the Station Road pool in Taunton, bringing it into the 21st century and have had some really positive comments from swimmers. Facilities at our pool in Wellington have also been improved. We must now look at what we can do for younger swimmers and club swimmers. St James pool has served us well for decades, but it really has reached its ‘sell-by’ date and needs replacing. “The Blackbrook site already hosts the very popular leisure centre run by our partners Tone Leisure and a pool and spa will make it a brilliant leisure complex where people can enjoy all sorts of sports and relaxation from spa treatments to tennis.” Now planning permission has been granted the council will look to award the contract in October 2014 with a potential start on site, weather permitting, in January 2015.
Doric Marketing launches new website the case, and I was able to walk again a couple of days later, albeit a little shakily”. Dorian took the decision to delay the launch of the new Doric website in light of his health issues. His medical team were also keen to ensure that he got enough rest and rehabilitation in the weeks immediately following his surgery. “I’ve been told that, of all the body’s tissues, nerves take the longest to repair. They’re also keen to remind me that I underwent a very major procedure and I have many months of recovery and rehabilitation ahead of me, though because I was operated on relatively quickly my long term prognosis is good. I’ve therefore decided that now is the right time to ramp things up again, and the launch of the website is obviously key to that”. When asked why a pool or spa company should consider doing business with Doric Marketing, Dorian was enthusiastically clear. “First of all, if you’re the kind of person who thinks marketing doesn’t work and is a complete waste of time and money - which is a view I do occasionally come across - then what I offer isn’t for you, and I’m happy to tell you that up-front so that I don’t waste any of your time. However, if you feel that you’re lagging behind in your skills and therefore not creating enough opportunity; if you’re not maximising each
and every opportunity which comes your way - and it’s vital that you absolutely do maximise every opportunity as the economy improves, because none of us know what’s round the next corner - then what Doric offers will make a positive impact on your business and your bottom line. Therefore vital marketing activity still happens whilst allowing you the time and space to do the day to day stuff and look after your customers. And, of course, with 27 years sales and marketing experience and a great track record in the pool and spa industry in both trade and consumer facing environments, I have an inherent understanding of your market and its challenges, as well as your products and services, which others won’t”. The Doric website can be found by going to: www.doricmarketing.co.uk Dorian finished by saying “Lastly, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this really is the best industry with the best people in it, and that’s been proven in spades since I became ill. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my many friends and customers who have sent me cards and messages of support and offers of help, and kept sending business my way. I really have been overwhelmed and touched by the kindness and level of support I’ve received”.

Doric Marketing, the pool and spa industry marketing company, has launched its new website. The website details all the services available from Doric, along with numerous case studies illustrating the many benefits of working with Doric for all a water leisure company’s marketing needs. The launch was postponed from earlier in the year after Doric’s MD, Dorian Davies was rushed to hospital and had emergency surgery on his spine at the beginning of April. Dorian told us: “It was really frightening at the time. I woke up one Saturday morning not being able to move or feel anything from my waist down. It transpired that I had a disc which ruptured so badly it was putting pressure on my spinal cord and effectively cutting off messages to and from all the nerves below the disc. I was taken by ambulance to my local hospital in Swindon. Then, when they realised the severity of the problem, I was ambulanced to the specialist Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, where they had a team waiting who operated on me literally within minutes of me being wheeled through the door. I was warned before they operated that, due to the severity of the nerve damage I suffered, that there was a good chance I would be in a wheelchair when I came out of the op. Thankfully, that wasn’t

Work underway at Surf Snowdonia Welsh Tourism Minister, Edwina Hart visited the site of Surf Snowdonia in June as work on the development got underway. The Minister also announced a funding package totalling £4.15M to Conwy Adventure Leisure Ltd towards the creation of Surf Snowdonia – Europe’s first inland surfing destination, which is due to be completed by early summer 2015. The economic impact of this landmark project includes 100 construction jobs over the build period as well as up to 60 direct jobs on-site once operational. Many other jobs will be sustained in the supply chain. Edwina Hart said: “I’m delighted to announce our support for what is going to be an iconic attraction for Wales. This project clearly supports our strategy in creating new, perception changing attractions. Surf Snowdonia will add a unique facility to an existing cluster of world class activity tourism products in the North Wales region and will drive growth by attracting additional higher spending visitors. I wish the company every success with the build over the coming year.” Steve Davies, Managing Director of Conwy Leisure Ltd, said: “Today’s groundbreaking is an important milestone for Surf Snowdonia, not least because it is being done in the company of Welsh Government Tourism Minister, Edwina Hart, who has confirmed £4.15M of extra funding for this multi-million pound project. “Keen surfers from around the world, whether amateur or experienced, will soon be descending on the Dolgarrog community, and the funding announcement has brought this one step closer again. Not only will Surf Snowdonia offer a huge boost to the North Wales economy, it will reaffirm its already strong credentials
as the outdoor capital of the UK.” Resounding support for the project has also come from the International Surfing Association through its President, Fernando Aguerre, who sees the creation of Surf Snowdonia of huge international significance and as a model which could facilitate surfing’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. The facility will also be key in attracting world-class events to Wales. Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA, said: “As a result of this incredible and pioneering technology, the creation of Surf Snowdonia is a historic moment that will revolutionise our sport. Surfing no longer has geographical restrictions – venues can be built away from the coastline efficiently and sustainably. We can now reach new surfing participants and fans who have never been to or even seen the ocean. “Unlocking this potential offers great benefits for surfing globally – we can host world-class surfing competitions with waves that are always consistent, powerful and publicly available. With this remarkable innovation, Surfing can now aspire to
become a part of the Olympic Games and other multi-sport events. With the ability to make perfect waves every time, all the time, centres like Surf Snowdonia can help make surfing’s Olympic dream a reality and ensure a bright future for the sport.” Steve Davies continued: “The project is already attracting national and international interest on a number of other levels, including of course, the ISA’s thoughts on the role it could play on an Olympic stage. In a week where people the world over are celebrating Olympic Day, breaking ground on this potentially instrumental facility seems fitting.” The location of the new development is the former Aluminium works at Dolgarrog, and will now be home to the first inland surfing lagoon in Europe, which will use technology to drive up to two metre high waves. Supporting facilities are a fun leisure pool, an indoor play centre, a central hub building with waterside restaurant, changing rooms, reception and retail area, a 100 pitch camp site, and landscaped grounds with external play facilities.
Swim school chooses Calorex A Calorex dehumidifier has proved to be an invaluable asset to a brand new swim school pool in Hull, by maintaining ideal swimming conditions for its users. The six metre by three metre indoor pool was built in the back garden of Waterworld swim school owners, Richard and Kathleen Gay, property to provide much-needed swimming facilities for children in the area. Lincolnshire-based Grayfox Swimming Pools designed and installed the pool, and carefully selected a Calorex Vaporex 55 wall mounted dehumidifier unit for the pool hall. Nigel Gray of Grayfox Pools comments: “Having used Calorex products in the past we were confident that the Vaporex unit would be the best option for this particular project.” He adds: “For aesthetic and space reasons, we decided the best option would be to place the dehumidifier in the plant room adjacent to the pool hall, so a through the wall adapted unit was selected with wall brackets and grills for the air ducts. A 5kw heater battery was also included, to heat the pool room from a supplementary boiler.” High levels of humidity if left unchallenged can be a major problem in an indoor pool environment. Water evaporating from the pool surface increases air humidity, and can eventually lead to mould, structural damage or collapse. Calorex Heat Pumps of Essex, manufacture and distribute an extensive range of dehumidifiers with units perfect not only for swimming pool buildings, but suitable for all types of storage and work environments. Their high-performance dehumidifiers recirculate the air and physically remove moisture from it. This alleviates the need to continuously reheat incoming air. Not only that, the units cleverly convert energy taken out of the room as moisture (latent energy), to create ‘sensible energy’ that can be used to heat the room, accelerating the drying process. Typically, for every unit of energy that a Calorex dehumidifier consumes, it will convert 2.5 times this amount to usable heat. The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to traditional heat and ventilation energy, cost savings of 500% are not unusual. Safety concerns over birthing pools, threat of Legionnaire’s disease Health and Safety Executive to ensure that they are adequately maintained. This advice is contained within a range of publications, such as ‘Management of Spa Pools – Controlling the Risk of Infection’ and also ‘Legionnaires’ Disease – The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems – Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (This HSE Code of Practice is also referred to as “L8”) and the PWTAG Swimming Pool Water Book (p.16). Every business in this industry should have a copy of these publications. Businesses that provide spa facilities on their premises and/or sell or hire out these products should also carry out a risk assessment, in accordance with BS 8580, which should be reviewed annually. BISHTA provides advice on water hygiene management to its 100+ members around Britain and Ireland and expects them to abide by a Code of Ethics for responsible trading. Staff should be vigilant about their personal health and should inform colleagues and family of the symptoms in case they become unwell, especially with pneumonia. Through the vigilance of BISHTA and its members, customers can be sure that they are receiving the correct advice on how to safely maintain their spas. BISHTA would strongly urge customers to buy or hire from BISHTA members, as companies that are not members of BISHTA, may not be suitably trained in water hygiene management and sadly, in some cases, the products being sold or hired by non-members are not always of a suitable quality. BISHTA welcomes applications for membership from anyone involved in manufacturing, importing, distributing, retailing or utilising hot tubs in a business setting. An approved water training course is a pre-requisite for BISHTA Membership. BISHTA works alongside The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA); both trade associations offer advice and guidance, providing resources for customers along with an easy to use ‘Find a Member’ postcode search facility. Expectant mothers have been warned not to use certain types of heated birthing pools at home after a baby born in one acquired Legionnaires‘ disease. According to press reports, Public Health England and the NHS have issued the warning for birthing pools that have built-in heaters and re-circulation pumps which are filled with water two weeks in advance of the birth. The alert comes after a case of Legionnaires’ disease was identified in a baby born in a home birth in one of the pools. Water samples confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria. Prof Nick Phin, PHE’s expert on Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, said: “This is an extremely unusual situation, which we are taking very seriously. As a precaution, we advise that heated birthing pools, filled in advance of labour and where temperature is then maintained by use of a heater and pump, are not used in the home setting, while we investigate further and until definitive advice on disinfection and safety is available.” In light of the current warning BISHTA the trade association for the British and Irish spa and hot tub industry would like to highlight these potential safety considerations when using, purchasing, hiring and maintaining spa products for home birthing purposes. BISHTA formed in 2001 following the outbreak of Legionnaires ’ disease in the Netherlands and Belgium in 1999 that killed a number of people visiting flower shows where hot tubs were on display (filled with water, but not treated with chlorine). BISHTA is the only trade association anywhere in Europe totally dedicated to solely representing the Spa and Hot Tub Industry, with published standards. The key message from BISHTA has always been about promoting safe spa water. By providing water hygiene management training, both BISHTA and its members can ensure that the rest of the industry is aware of their responsibilities, for maintaining spa water with an appropriate level of sanitiser (bromine, chlorine or PHMB) to reduce to a minimum the risk of having the Legionella bacteria developing into the potential danger of Legionnaires’ disease. BISHTA’s Technical Adviser Howard Gosling said: “BISHTA estimates there are at least 100,000 hot tubs and swim spas in the British Isles and given the isolated number of incidents each year, this demonstrates that by following the simple rules needed for water hygiene management, that spa pools can be safely maintained and used.” It is vital that companies selling or hiring out products that will contain heated water for the purpose of bathing follow the advice of the relevant public health agency and the
F.G. Alden choose Recotherm for state-of-the-art Blackbird Leys Project
F.G. Alden Ltd of Oxford has been awarded the contract to supply the mechanical and electrical services for the prestigious new Blackbird Leys swimming complex in Oxford. The new facility will be linked to the Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre and will comprise a 25m main pool with moveable floor, a teaching pool, a toddlers’ splash pool, village and group changing facilities, spectator seating including café style area, a sauna, and a soft play area. The new facility will also have a number of energy efficient and carbon reduction measures including a biomass boiler, combined heat and power unit, pool covers, and energy efficient plant and lighting. As part of the energy efficient plant, F.G. Alden has awarded the contract for the swimming pool environmental control ventilation units to Recotherm Ltd of Birmingham. F.G. Alden has been one of the country’s leading M&E services companies for over 85 years, working on some of the highest profile projects. They first worked with Recotherm over 20 years ago when Recotherm supplied the ventilation and environmental control unit for the prestigious Charterhouse School in Surrey.
22
In the original specification for the Blackbird Leys project, the environmental control units were to be from a German manufacturer. However, upon being given the opportunity to quote for the project, Alden’s got in touch with Recotherm and asked them to specify suitable units, as they knew through their experience with Recotherm products on a number of other previous projects that there would likely be a significant saving in running costs with no loss of air quality or performance; as well as better characteristics in meeting the energy-efficiency and carbon-reduction aims. F.G. Alden also cited Recotherm’s exemplary post-sale service performance. The client agreed, and the specification was changed to include the Recotherm products. Recotherm are supplying two of their high efficiency CVME 700 2HX units to serve the pool hall, and a CVME 400 2HX to serve the adjoining areas. All of the units have at their heart the dual pass recuperator (DPR) system, which can offer efficiencies of up to an incredible 90%. This is of vital importance because pool hall ventilation and environmental control is the most energy demanding drain on a leisure centre’s non-human resource operating costs.
David Hale, F.G. Alden’s Contracts Manager, said of their decision to specify Recotherm units: “We were very happy to award the contract for the pool ventilation and environmental control equipment to Recotherm. Having worked with them on previous high profile projects, we have much experience of the quality, reliability and performance of their products; and we’re extremely confident that the Recotherm units specified will not only handle the demands placed on them in controlling the environment in the new facility at Blackbird Leys, but do so returning minimal running and service costs”. In fact, the inclusion of Recotherm units, along with many other measures to increase energy-efficiency and reduce running costs and carbon-footprint, means Oxford City Council expects to achieve a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) ‘Very Good’ rating for the new pool (source oxford.gov.uk), and is close to developing one of the first BREEAM ‘Excellent’ pools in the country. BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, setting the standard for the best practice in sustainable building design. Martin Killen, Recotherm’s Managing Director says of this latest feather in the company’s cap: “We’re delighted to have won the contract at Blackbird Leys and to have the opportunity of working with F.G. Alden once again. We know that by applying the latest cutting edge technologies we incorporate in our CVME units, we can meet the client’s needs, satisfy all the demands placed on the system, whilst delivering significant operating and service costs, reduced energy consumption, and produce lower levels of system noise”. The project coincides with Recotherm’s move to new, larger premises in Redditch to cope with the increased demand for their products. UK’s oldest public open-air pools to reopen thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund grant Olympic medallist Sharron Davies has backed ambitious plans to restore a 200-year-old Georgian lido. The oldest surviving open-air swimming baths in the UK are set to be fully restored and reopened to the public, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The Grade II* listed Cleveland Pools, a 200year old Georgian lido in the historic city of Bath, has secured earmarked funding of £4.1M including a development grant of £366,200, it was announced today. Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who has been a long-time supporter and ambassador for the project, said: “This is such good news. After hard work and sheer perseverance by the trust and its advisers it’s looking like we will have a magnificent and unique pool in Bath that we can all enjoy for a proper outdoor swim.” The pools first opened in 1815 following the Bathwick Water Act which prohibited nude bathing in the river. Laid out in the shape of a miniature Georgian crescent, the site includes two bathing pools, the original changing rooms and a private ladies pool. They are one of only a small number of pre-Victorian sporting buildings to survive nationally and are thought to be the oldest swimming baths of its type in Western Europe.
The site closed to the public in 1978 and, after finally closing altogether in 1984, was briefly used as a trout farm. It has since deteriorated but although on English Heritage’s Heritage at Risk register, the main features remain remarkably intact. The restoration project, run by community group The Cleveland Pools trust, will conserve the Georgian features and upgrade the facilities to allow for yearround swimming and other activities. When complete, the site will include a 25-metre swimming pool, children’s splash area, pavilion and café. The pools will be naturally treated and heated using the latest technology. Nerys Watts, Head of HLF South West, said: “There’s nothing quite like swimming in the great outdoors, and it’s something which so many of us really enjoy, whatever our age. Cleveland Pools are believed to be the oldest surviving example of a public swimming pool in England. They have a fantastic story behind them that provides a glimpse into how our ancestors spent their leisure time, and we’re delighted to support this important project.” Ann Dunlop, Chairman of the Cleveland Pools Trust, said: “The trust and its many supporters will be over the moon that our
campaign to keep the pools in the public eye, while developing a sustainable plan working with experts from both English Heritage and The Prince’s Regeneration Trust, has finally got the green light from HLF. The success of our bid is all the more remarkable given that we are all volunteers with no paid staff.” The HLF grant will cover 85% of the total costs. Bath and North-East Somerset Council, who own the site, have pledged £200,000 towards the project. The trust is now looking to secure the remaining money and is hoping that people will be moved to donate to make the project a reality. Expert advice has been provided by English Heritage and the Prince’s Regeneration Trust. Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of The Prince’s Regeneration Trust, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with this news. It’s a momentous step forward for Cleveland Pools after years of hard work by everyone involved. In the current hot weather the cooling waters of the Cleveland Pools would be a popular and attractive asset for everyone in Bath. We are now finally near to making that happen. “We would like to thank HLF for their tremendous support and investment in Cleveland Pools.”

Spa Crest announce Coastal range facelifts Spa Crest Europe, manufacturers of the world’s only carbon-fibre reinforced hot tubs, have released a number of new and face-lifted models in their highly popular Coastal mid-range hot tubs. The upgrades include a more ergonomic re-sculpting of shell contours and more hydrotherapyfocussed jet-arrays; as well as new optional LED scatter lighting and drink holders. Tony Welsby, Managing Director of Spa Crest Europe says: “We’ve recently completed a programme of upgrades to our Coastal range of products to re-sculpt the shells. We take anatomical data of real human bodies and use this to come up with designs that are beautifully comfortable and form-fitting in each seat, whether it’s an upright seat or a lounger.” These new designs are then handed to the craftsmen in Spa Crest’s mould shop, where
the new tech meets old school artisan skills. Spa Crest still make all their own moulds in-house and the team in their mould shop, some of whom have been with the company since they started over 25 years ago, hand-finish the moulds to the new designs to produce beautiful ergonomic, supremely comfortable new shell designs. Jet types and positions are also devised to maximise the therapeutic benefit by targeting different trigger points on the body using differing jet arrays in each seat. The comfort built in to a Spa Crest carbonfibre reinforced spa shell cannot be overstated and is an integral part of the whole experience. If you’re not comfortable in the hot tub, it’s not going to be relaxing. So much so, that in one visit to a Spa Crest dealer in Staffordshire, a lady who had already put a deposit down on another brand’s (more
expensive) spa called them back to cancel her order and ask for her deposit to be refunded after sitting in a Hampton model. She said it was just so much more comfortable! Models which have undergone the recent upgrades include the Hampton, the Hatteras and the St. Augustine. The new model is a five seater with lounger called the Key West, measuring 1.94m by 1.94m. Brand2Go models utilising the same moulds have also undergone the same upgrades. Spa Crest and Brand2Go dealerships are still available in selected areas of the UK. If you’d like to find out which opportunities may still be open in your locale, Tony Welsby says to give him a call on 0844 871 8730 him an email at tony@spacrest-europe.com for details.
