HYCOVER Distribution Systems

HYRATE Biofilters

Plastic media biofilters require specific wetting rates to prevent build-up of biomass within the media pack. Sewaco HYCOVER static and rotary distributors have been designed to meet these requirements.

Sewaco has developed a range of open and closed top rectangular and polytower structures suitable for containment of modular plastic media. The design of each containment shell ensures adequate ventilation of the media pack. Shells can be single skin internally clad or double skin externally clad with internal impervious membrane for maximum protection of

HYCOVER rotary distributors are arranged for reaction drive and can be fitted with variable speed electric drive. Periodic flushing can be achieved when electric drive is provided. In the event of power loss, machines automatically revert to reaction drive. Machines are fitted with stainless steel tubular or open trough type arms.

The HYCOVER rotary distributors manufactured by Sewaco incorporate many unique features to ease routine maintenance and field servicing. Built from standard materials including galvanised steel bowl and central support column, with heavy duty upper bearings fitted with slow release greaser cartridge. Low level stabilisers are located beneath the bowl. Stainless steel distributor arms are supported on stainless strainer wires. HYCOVER nozzle assemblies incorporate back entry `quickstrip’ nozzle rodding caps and plastic nozzles, with stainless spreader plates, arranged to ensure even application of liquor across the media plan.

size from 4.0 up to 35.0 mt diameter, are available that can be arranged to receive up to 8 times D.W.F. Centre bowls and main support columns are fabricated from GMS or stainless steel materials dependent on site requirements, with integral dosing syphons where applicable for stainless tubular type arms. Special spreader plates are fitted to ensure curtain effect distribution onto media surface. Nozzle rodding caps and full flow washout end caps are provided to simplify routine maintenance. Centrally mounted belt drive electric power units are offered where speed control and periodic slow speed operation is required.

Rotary Distributors

HYCOVER rotary distributors are available in a range of designs, including 2, 3, 4 & 6 arm versions that can handle a wide range of gravity or pumped feed rates. Open trough machines are often selected to cater for larger flows.

Static Distribution Systems

Roughing Filters

Static systems are designed to suit the plan area of HYRATE rectangular biofilters while rotary distributors are designed for circular filter shells and HYRATE polytower structures. Static distributors can be fitted with AUTOCLEANSE, our automatic nozzle cleansing system. This minimises biomass accumulation and thereby reduces plant maintenance. Our AUTOCLEANSE automatic nozzle cleansing device, improves overall efficiency of the installed distribution system by preventing build-up of biomass within nozzles and assisting in dislodging of non-organic solids, thereby maximising the use of installed media at all times. AUTOCLEANSE is essential for use in `confined space’ installations, where access is restricted or site maintenance is limited.

Sewaco range of HYRATE rectangular and polytower biofilter shells are suitable for use where roughing filters are required.

Static HYCOVER distributors have no moving parts, providing a low maintenance trouble free system. HYCOVER distribution systems are normally designed to receive a pumped feed, although systems for gravity feed with an integral dosing syphon are also offered. Wetting rates from 1.5 to 13.0 m3/m2/ hr are supplied to meet a wide range of applications catering for normal and storm flow conditions. This can be achieved by using single, dual and triple systems.

Factory assembled, pre-fabricated and tailor made timber media support matrix modules are designed specifically for use in conjunction with modular plastic media. Specially treated timber beams provide excellent ventilation of the media pack, avoiding accumulation of sludge pockets on wide surfaces, and accept full operational loads at up to 600 kg/m3 of media with adequate safety margin to ensure long and effective operational life. Timber is graded and cut to specific lengths prior to being treated with a high strength AC500 solution. Modules are

Nitrifying Biofilters Using the HYRATE filter design and HYCOVER distributors, impressive reduction of ammonia levels with high flow rates can be achieved.

pH Control Control of pH forms an essential part of most chemical and biological treatment processes. pH control systems including makeup, dosing and monitoring plant are offered as part of any design package, with a range of selected good quality equipment provided which meets most applications.

Media Support Matrix Modules

then factory jig built to produce easily transportable modules. This modular system can be manufactured to suit any configuration of containment structure. Modules are delivered to site, ready for installation on prepared concrete dwarf walls, prepared by the civils contractor to our outline design. The system is quick and easy to install. On completion, it provides a working platform from which to construct the HYRATE containment shell. Our modular media support system provides an exceptional service life, combining effective air flow with free drainage for the media pack, minimising cell blinding at point of contact.

Media Guard Product comes in various dimensions from 1 to 4 meters wide, placed in panels, joined together to form a complete membrane to prevent trash entrainment of the biological pack. Media Guard can be retrofitted or as a part of the new build specification.

Sewaco Ltd has been working alongside Trant Construction, Wessex Water and GENoco to renew the four roughing filters on the Shepton Mallet STW refurbishment project.

Thanks to the refurbishment, the ventilation has been changed, so fresh air is drawn in and down through the media, meaning odorous air is extracted from the bottom of each filter.

The roughing filters refurbishment was one part of a major project where work was split into two, with the first scheme addressing the requirements for phosphorus removal and improving the process reliability of the site.

During refurbishment, a portion of flow from each roughing filter had to be diverted to an old balancing tank that was converted to a plastic media filter. This was in accordance with site compliance.

The key elements to the project, which began on site in May 2012, entail a new ferric dosing plant, new tertiary sand filters with an associated feed pumping station, and the extension of the raw sludge tanks incorporating a new feed pumping station and new sludge tank mixers. Sewaco has been a key part of the project, carrying out work to remove old plastic media from all four filters.

The balancing tank filter is uncovered and had to be fitted with a temporary carbon odour control unit for the duration of the roughing filters refurbishment. As part of the project, the old PVC filter media material was removed by Sewaco and transported to Wessex Water Avonmouth STW for recycling. It is a vital part of working towards Wessex Water’s aim of achieving zero waste to landfill by 2020.

Work was necessary to refurbish these roughing filters because the existing ones were in poor condition and ventilation is abstracted from the top of the media, making access to the distributors difficult due to high levels of H2S. Therefore, complete refurbishment of all four filters was required. This included new tank walls, roof, media and refurbishment of the distributors. Reliant supplied the roofs and replacement tanks, with Sewaco providing the support structure, new media and distributor.

Service & Maintenance Sewaco provides a full after sales service together with routine maintenance and contract service for all types of sewage and effluent plant installations.

Steffturbine - Power from Water – the ecological answer Steffturbine is a new product that Sewaco is providing to the UK market that gives a sustainable energy supply. Only recently introduced, Steffturbine’s benefits to customers are wide ranging. As well as providing a high return on capital, it is cost effective to install, environmentally friendly, weather-proof, and is highly efficient. The Micro Hydroelectric Turbine utilises an effluent outfall that has a minimum flow rate of 250l/s with a height

differential from 2.5m to 5m. The 12kw modular unit will generate power based on the potential created by the weight of water within the machine. The land based control system supplies power via an export meter to the national grid or site services. The conveyor turbine is installed on an optimum incline of 30° which improves the capture of potential energy within the enclosed conveyor.

input when included within a new design. Retro-fitting a micro Hydroelectric Turbine into an existing outfall may require additional infrastructure, hence the need to tie up with a civil engineering contractor. Most Hydroelectric units utilise high speed turbine blades to drive the rotor which requires very clean water. The Conveyor system is designed for high volume low head application and can cope with a wide variety of water & effluent sources. This makes the conveyor turbine particularly suited to final effluent applications.

The unit requires minimal civil engineering Thanks to the unique concept, the natural environment is hardly disturbed – in marked contrast to existing technologies. The Steffturbine is positioned above the surface of the water, so that the ecosystem remains as pristine as possible with zero emissions and no CO2. This system is currently being offered in northern Europe and Sewaco Ltd have been asked to market this system in cooperation with WRH Walter REIST Holding AG, based in Switzerland.

Main Benefits: • Sustainable power supply. • Fixed electricity price for lifetime of generating system. • Reduce carbon footprint.
