For nearly 20 years Pro-Mark Media has been circulating three national construction, civil engineering and architectural publications across the UK and Ireland. UK Construction, Building Scotland and Construction Ireland magazines have become geographically some of the largest industry publications in circulation. The hard copy and online (feel free to view our magazines at www.pro-mark.org. uk) publications have gained an extensive subscription rate with a fantastic readership of key specifiers and decision makers throughout all sectors under the construction and architectural banner.
Regular editorials are supplied from, and written in conjunction with: SPATA - Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association, BSPF - British Swimming Pool Federation, BISHTA - British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association, ISPE - Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, PWTAG - Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group SPATEX Exhibition UK Pool & Spa Expo
Following the success of a Wet Leisure profile within UK Construction magazine and continuing conversations with major swimming pool and spa authorities such as SPATA and the BSPF, it was found there was NO dedicated publication focused on the swimming pool industry targeting the construction and architectural sector. In order to deliver a publication of this nature SwimCONSTRUCT magazine was born and is now the only dedicated publication highlighting the direct link between the two industries. The launch of SwimCONSTRUCT was highly successful and the magazine has featured a range of exhibitions and profiles on leading swimming pool and spa companies over its past issues. SwimCONSTRUCT aims to provide the latest industry news, expo previews and reviews, project updates and company profiles within each issue.
For further information, please contact Mat Blackmore or Raimy Greenland, SwimCONSTRUCT on 01257 231900 or via E-mail to mat.blackmore@pro-mark.org.uk and raimy.greenland@pro-mark.org.uk Pro-Mark Media
Editors Victoria Lee Gareth Trevor-Jones Staff Writer John Train Editorial Raimy Greenland Robert Atherton Copy Jody Ramsey

Pro-Mark is more than happy to help with all aspects of promotion to one of the largest circulations in the UK and Ireland’s construction industries to enable the opportunity to gain specifier or preferred bidder status, putting your company, services and products at the top of all swimming pool construction contact listings.

range but incorporates a very high standard of engineering and some unique features: trackless, choice of opaque or clear glass roof, louvered vents to the side of the unit for ventilation and the option to be motorised which makes it a serious alternative to traditional safety covers.
Combining the established UK name of Algarve Pool Enclosures with the French manufacturers PAC brand name of AquaTelescopic, Summit sell and install the product throughout the UK ,the Middle East and will shortly be undertaking projects in the United States. They sell direct to the end user but are increasingly working with pool builders. Summit have been working with PAC for over 10 years. During that time they have seen the product range and innovative engineering ideas established in the traditional retractable range incorporated into new concepts of pool enclosures. Examples of this are the recently introduced Visio Enclosure, a static building with a sliding roof. This has proved to be a very popular cover in the rapidly developing swimspa market. This year the Ultima low profile enclosure has been introduced. Designed to compete with the very low cost low covers that are on the market, the Ultima is in the same price
2014 sees the addition of the Allseas spa to the company’s product range. Allseas manufacture a vast range of spas and swimspas. It’s not just the large product range that attracted Summit to the partnership. The attention to detail, continual innovation of product design and the very impressive build quality were the major factors. Their SwimSpa with an automatic sliding deck is just one example of this.
Utilising the Algarve Aquatelescopic enclosure and the Allseas SwimSpa range makes an interesting and exciting combined package. An indoor pool at a very attractive price!

Waves Water Fun Centre work begins in Blackburn Work has begun on a new £13.5M sports and swimming complex in Blackburn town centre to replace the ageing Waves Water Fun Centre. The joint project between Blackburn with Darwen Council and Blackburn College will provide for students and residents with a larger fitness suite, a dance/ aerobics studio, sauna and steam room and eight games courts. The scheme, partly-based on Darwen Leisure Centre, will halve running costs of the existing Waves complex, leading to lower prices for swimmers and other users. Building on the gravel area next to Feilden Street multi-storey car park started in November 2013 with the sports halls, and fitness areas ready for September 2014. The swimming pools will open a year later.
Then 26-year-old Waves will be demolished and the site sold for development by the Council. Blackburn with Darwen borough’s executive board approved its £8.5M share of the cost on in April 2013, with the College providing in excess of £5M. A survey of Waves said it was ‘not sustainable’ and ‘dilapidated’ with annual running costs at £500,000, twice those for Darwen Leisure Centre. The leisure centre will include: ••An international short course standards eight-lane, 25-metre pool with two leisure slides ••A 15-metre by seven-metre small training pool, screenable for single gender use ••An 80-station fitness suite ••A dance/aerobics studio
with a sprung floor ••A health suite with sauna and steam room ••Two four-court sports halls for college use in class hours and public use from 5 pm, weekends and holidays ••A sports science lab for college use The development would be another key part of regenerating the town centre. Council leader Kate Hollern said: “This is a great development which will move forward our redevelopment plans. It will provide the latest facilities and save the council money on maintaining Waves. It’s a win-win situation. We could not have afforded it without the college.” Leisure chief Damian Talbot said: “I am absolutely delighted. This is absolutely the right thing to do to keep people healthy and reduce the cost of swimming and staying fit.”

BAM is set to build a £20M leisure centre in Bridlington BAM Construction, which has offices in Leeds, expects to start on the Leisure World facility in January after it was approved by planners at East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The facility will include a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a smaller learner pool, a freeform pool with water features, two water slides and swimming spectator seating for 150. It will also have a changing village, and a health suite with a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, showers and foot spa. There will be a 70-station fitness studio, an exercise studio, a spinning studio and spaces
for dance and yoga classes. Sports fans will benefit from a six-court sports hall, two squash courts and a feature climbing wall. The building will also include a café with access for both centre users and non-users. John Phillips, Construction Director for BAM Construction, said: ‘We’ll bring a local team to this project together with our reputation for quality and our considerate approach. It’s an exciting project – the leisure sector often has unique buildings that need an eye for quality and a collaborative, problem-solving culture like ours. We will also try to deliver
economic benefits for the area, involving local firms as much as possible. It’s our second major leisure project in the region, with Huddersfield Sports Centre under construction and three projects in Hull.’ BAM is one of the UK’s biggest contractors, and recently built Leeds Arena. It is the leading construction firm in the Best Companies to Work For list and was listed the highest of all the UK’s companies in the annual carbon reduction table. Leisure Centre reduces running costs with the Evomax from Ideal Commercial Boilers Rather than employing a consultant, Rob used his expertise as a highly skilled engineer to design, install and commission the new system, which he did following an on-site consultation with Mike Stubbs, Business Development Manager for Ideal Commercial Boilers and after attending a training course at the Ideal Commercial Boilers Centre of Excellence in Reading to further expand his knowledge of the products. Consultants were then hired to approve Rob’s design, rather than create the design from scratch, saving the council around £7,200 in fees. The five Evomax wall hung boilers were supplied complete with a dedicated frame and header kit to make installation even easier and Rob worked alongside technical experts from Ideal Commercial Boilers to resolve siting issues. He explained: “Due to the Clean Air Act, we could not terminate the flues through the wall so these had to be directed through the roof. We had the choice of incorporating five individual flues, which would have meant five potential weathering issues, or alternatively just one main header flue. We decided to go with the latter and I hired a flue specialist company to carry out the work.” The Evomax condensing boilers offer efficiencies of around 98%, resulting in a reduction in running costs that the council predicts will total around £6,000 a year, thereby dramatically decreasing the payback period for these boilers as well as delivering future energy savings. These impressive results have enabled the council to put vital funds towards other much-needed projects in the community. Totton Health and Leisure prides itself on being amongst the best leisure facilities and activities in the local area, including a refurbished gym, exercise classes, swimming pool, new changing village, the Swim Academy, sauna and steam rooms, a four-court badminton hall, sports courses and a variety of family holiday activities and children’s parties.

Leading British manufacturer Ideal Commercial Boilers has supplied five Evomax 80kW high efficiency condensing wall hung boilers to New Forest District Council, which have been installed at Totton Health and Leisure Centre, Southampton. The Evomax boilers have provided the solution to a challenging array of installation requirements, as well as contributing to a 15% reduction in running costs. Rob Sowden, Commercial Gas Engineer for New Forest District Council, specified the five Evomax 80kW boilers, not only because he had installed them before and knew them to be extremely reliable and easy to maintain, but also because of the space and energy saving capabilities the Evomax boilers could offer. Rob explained: “The original boilers at Totton Leisure Centre were Ideal Commercial Boilers Super Series 3, which had been running trouble-free since they were installed in 1986. My first thought was to conduct a like-for-like replacement with Ideal Commercial Boiler’s upgraded equivalent range, the Super Series 4. However, another major aspect of the Totton Leisure Centre project was the installation of a new booster set for the hot water system that would ensure consistent water pressure for the showers, and more importantly a drive to introduce condensing boiler technology. We therefore needed to relocate the boilers in order to facilitate the new water tank for the booster set. This immediately brought up the issue of space constrictions, as there would be significantly less available plant room space, as well as the question of flueing arrangements. An added challenge was that the leisure centre was to remain open during the installation, so we needed to ensure the hot water system was working during opening times and that the pool’s water temperature would be maintained. A challenging brief but, fortunately, Ideal Commercial Boilers and the Evomax were able to provide the answer to all these issues.”

Golden Coast sets the theme for its product line-up at SPATEX 2014 With a massive product range to choose from, the UK’s largest independent distributor of wet leisure products to the trade has to think very carefully about what to display each year at SPATEX. This year, Golden Coast will use the three-day event to showcase its innovative, high quality product additions – supporting them with expert ‘on-the-spot’ advice. Among the new top brands Golden Coast will bring to SPATEX are two manufacturers with a strong connection with water quality. Since signing an exclusive UK distribution deal with Darlly, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality filter cartridges, Golden Coast has seen the sales of highspec filters soar – reflecting a more general customer trend towards choosing better products. For supreme confidence in the water’s health, developments in ozone and UV treatment by Triogen will be highlighted. Continuing on the theme of water quality, Golden Coast’s stand will
also feature automatic chemical dosing systems from Etatron. Adding a new dimension to the pool and spa experience, Golden Coast offers LED lighting systems with options including rich background colours, rhythmic colour changes and dynamic light shows. Choice of high-quality lighting equipment rewards users with reliability, durability and effectiveness. This is exemplified by the Spectravision range, as well as the EVA Optic systems, which have proved themselves in major venues throughout Europe and are now available in the UK exclusively through Golden Coast. Golden Coast’s showcase of quality products continues with the range of automatic pool covers from DEL and by a demonstration of its own bespoke pool and spa control panels. Two other brands synonymous with quality are Tylö, whose sauna equipment will feature prominently on the stand, and Sundance Spas, again distributed
exclusively by Golden Coast in the UK, which will have its own space at SPATEX. Visitors to SPATEX will also have a chance to see Golden Coast’s new additions to its extensive range of spa products, including SpaGlo, a spa shell and cover cleaner that cleans, shines, protects and restores faded and dull looking finishes. SpaFix, a spa leak sealant that’s suitable for all types of spas and hot tubs and fixes all minor leaks in the pipework will also be shown. In addition, show visitors will have a chance to find out more about EasyKlip: “The World’s Strongest Tarp Klip”. It is an affordable, temporary solution for securing spa covers when clips become damaged. “We’ve selected products to show the quality available – and to help us explain why quality is important,” says Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams. “We are also very keen to advise trade customers on the many ways in which we can help them increase their business.”

High Tech German Made Fibre - An Alternative Filter Media Strict legal requirements in Germany for water filtration have been the basis for the development of a new, high tech alternative filter media. FIBALON®, is an innovative and highly efficient filter for water purification in swimming pools, spas, aquaria and other water systems. Developed in cooperation with the Environment Institute in Neuenmarkt at the Georg-Simon Ohm University of Nuremberg, the product is a mixture of various full and hollow polyester fibres which feature different surface structures that are shaped into a ball. The shape
guarantees the maximum surface area and high density, but at the same time, the lowest volume and weight. The interior of each fibre ball has a slightly dense core with a softer outer allowing the balls to nestle up against each other, building a filter carpet which will adapt to all filter forms. FIBALON® can be used like sand for about three years, but for hygienic reasons it is recommended to change the filter material every year. The innovative FIBALON® ‘DyFix’ system provides high absorption and penetration into the centre of each ball. Flow pressure opens the outer fibres
and dirt particles are not only trapped in the spaces between the fibres, but also directly bonded to their surface. The filter balls will not be compressed by the back pressure of the water, are self-compacting and the flow direction ensures they are spread evenly and compress themselves. The equivalent to 25kg of sand, just one 350g bag of FIBALON® contains polymer fibres with a total length of about 200 km which are available as a perfect cleaning surface and can be universally applied where conventional sand and cartridge filters are in use (recommended from a diameter of 200 mm).

Hydrotherapy and competition pool completed at HMS Drake for Help for Heroes Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has successfully handed over the second of two new facilities in Plymouth that will benefit military personnel and veterans undergoing recovery. Help for Heroes is supporting the initiative with a £21M commitment. The project is part of HMS Drake’s larger Naval Service Recovery Centre. The ‘Endeavour Centre’ is a recovery complex offering state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment. This complex consists of three buildings incorporating a gym, consultation rooms, social area and a hydrotherapy area with changing facilities. A 25-metre, six-lane competition pool is also provided, featuring a floor that can be raised or lowered according to need. The pool’s floor is made of low-density material to enable it to float if
required. Outside, a terraced area has been created with seating and a bronze statue focal point depicting the stretcher-bearers’ imagery associated with Help for Heroes. The facility will provide those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses with the very best support they need, for life. At the recovery complex Interserve’s groundworks included remediation of land contaminated with hydrocarbons and metals. The ground was then piled by Interserve using bored displacement piles before excavation began for the swimming pools. Of steel frame construction, the finished buildings comprise metal and brick cladding with powder coated aluminium glazed curtain walling. The 69-week construction period has seen Interserve hand over the project on time and within budget.

Who is Guncast? As a family-run business, Guncast prides itself on its’ reputation for exceptional luxury swimming pool design and construction, adhering to the most rigorous standards of quality, attention to detail and customer service. Established in the 1970s by Bruce Harding, Guncast is now run by his son Jack Harding, along with a dedicated and experienced management team. The name Guncast is derived from the company’s preferred method of pool construction - casting the shell from sprayed ‘Gunite’ concrete. These pools are generally finished in natural stone, porcelain or glass mosaics, although Guncast will work with the client on each and every project to provide the finishes particular to their vision. Guncast also constructs stainless steel pools in a variety of formats.

features - including moving floors, submersible booms, inside/ outside pools, glass walls, retractable hydraulic stainless steel spa recliners, user control from remote house-management system, and intelligent lighting systems - to deliver the ultimate in luxurious swimming pool design. Along with the innovative features, Guncast also has a wealth of experience designing and constructing swimming pools in various environments. From basements to outbuildings and walled gardens, the challenges of these builds prove Guncast as a highly experienced and extremely skilled swimming pool company. Guncast has a clear understanding of the varying perspectives and requirements of the parties involved in each project: the client - be they a domestic end-client, local authority, hotel or private health club; architect or landscape architect; project manager; interior designer; and main contractor. Each have their own unique role to play within the team, and Guncast work alongside them all to ensure that the project is delivered, on time and on budget. The team’s experience spans every swimming pool market sector throughout the UK and overseas, including luxury domestic pools, hydro-spa pools, hydrotherapy pools, boutique hotel vitality pools, competition pools and municipal leisure pools. Their projects often incorporate wellness facilities, such as a spa pool, plunge pool, sauna, steam room or ice fountain. With Guncast offices in West Sussex and Oxfordshire, and designers and project managers in Europe and New York, this experience is certainly not limited to the UK.
How Guncast delivers
Guncasts’ designers are often required to join the project team in the early stages to ensure that the pool design is fully incorporated into the building’s structural design with a holistic approach. This consultancy and design service has developed naturally in response to a global client demand for Guncast’s design and expertise. Once engaged, a Guncast project manager is assigned whose responsibility it is to fully coordinate and progress the contract from commencement of design drawings through to handover of the completed swimming pool. At the completion of the design phase, and then updated throughout the project as required, detailed CAD working drawings are produced and distributed allowing all project stakeholders to relate to all aspects of the design and scope of works. Guncast is in the fortunate position, being so well established, to have it’s own in-house highly experienced teams for pool shell construction, tiling and engineering, ensuring that they are not reliant on sub-contractors, therefore retaining full control over programming and quality control. At the end of the project the system and controls are fully demonstrated to the client or their representative by the project manager. A written Operations & Maintenance Manual is be placed within the plant room, and digital copy supplied on disk. However, this is not the end of the story….. continued page 20 > Infinity edge

Case studies
1. Moving floor swimming pool, South London The design for this property based in Surrey was generated through the vision and creativity of the designers at Guncast and architect Alan Higgs. The luxury swimming pool was built with a moving floor to allow for multi-purpose use of the space. The exceptional standard of the design allows for ease between functions and creates an idyllic setting for both water and dry-side recreational activities.
2. Outdoor training lap swimming pool, Surrey The client, keen semi-professional swimmers, tasked Guncast with designing and creating a pool that would allow daily swimming, whilst not unbalancing the aesthetics of their beautiful landscaped gardens, which surround their house. Demand for pools such as these has been rising over the years, as increasing numbers of people choose to live in the city where limited amounts of outdoor space restrict pool sizes. Working in partnership with Thomson and Baroni Architects, Guncast designed and created a stunning lap pool 22m in length and just three metres wide, long enough to train professionally, and wide enough for three swimmers at once. Adjoining the pool, a spa pool provides the perfect space for relaxation in the warm bubbling waters. The project was not without its challenges. On excavation of the site prior to the construction of the pool, a redundant basement was identified within the excavation zone. The basement had to be mechanically removed by Guncast’s in-house team, protecting the house and surrounding walls. The client was very specific that the pool needed to be of the highest quality finish and visually stunning. Complete with stainless steel fittings and LED underwater lighting continued page 22 >

Heatstar’s range of high quality energy technology systems both control and manage swimming pool environments in the most energy efficient way possible. Quality is one important shared value but look a little closer and the shared values continue. Both companies are family run businesses and both companies have around four decades of experience in the UK pool market. It is no surprise therefore that, through these shared values, Guncast and Heatstar have collaborated on some of the finest pool installations in the UK. One example is a large eco-friendly indoor pool in a converted dairy farm building in East Sussex. Guncast’s client wanted a pool installation that was, as near as possible, carbon neutral. Guncast rose to the challenge and converted this former farm building into a luxurious, private swimming pool using ecologically friendly materials and technology to create and maintain low energy usage.
control system. Ideally, this should provide effective humidity control, heat recovery, full rate fresh air and both air and pool water heating. The unit selected was the Heatstar Phoenix XF 6000 Super Plus with “auto-fan” technology. Amongst other benefits, the Phoenix XF regulates pool room humidity levels by introducing controlled amounts of fresh air. Within the UK, the moisture content of the outside air is always less than the air within the pool room, enabling highly effective dehumidification as the room air is exchanged. To reduce the heat loss incurred through this ventilation process, a method of heat recovery is employed using a Cross Flow recuperator.
One further consideration where Heatstar units win hands down is the flexible configurations in which their units can be supplied. This was particularly important on this project as the environmental control part of the plant room is sited in an attic/mezzanine area above the pool. The Heatstar Phoenix unit’s flexible configurations enabled it to be more easily installed in this potentially difficult area. The client was delighted with the finished job and its superb energy efficiency - helped in no small way by the inclusion of a Heatstar energy technology system.
A key element in delivering the energy efficiency required was the choice of environmental

4. Indoor swimming pool, Oxfordshire Working for clients with a background in precision engineering and cutting edge design, Guncast, in conjunction with Yiangou Architects, created a contemporary and truly design-focused swimming pool and surrounding buildings. To allow the pool to stand alone as a minimal and precise pavilion, all the mechanical equipment associated with this indoor swimming pool is housed in a separate garage building with all the cables and ducting tunnelled underground, rising up into the building in it’s solid end gable. Facilities such as the changing rooms, showers and gymnasium are all housed in a separate building, connected to the pool by a frameless glass link. To maintain the transition between the old Cotswold stone main building and the swimming pool / gym buildings, design continuity and architectural sympathy with the surroundings was paramount to the success of the project. Frameless sliding glass panels form the walls of the pool building. The pool can be opened right up to the gardens on a beautiful summers day to provide the visual connections and feelings of being outside. The defining feature of the pool building is the ceiling. A curving structure, finished in a polished Venetian plaster, it has been designed to give the impression that the roof is floating, with the ceiling visually detached from the columns holding it all up. There are no lights piercing this sleek, smooth surface, hidden strips of
tiny LEDs light the top section of ceiling which appears to glow, reflecting light down off the polished plaster. To ensure that the purity of the building was not diluted, Guncast made every effort to ensure the detailing of all grilles, switches, speakers, lights, alarms, detectors and control panels that come with modern living were either concealed entirely or designed in a way to ensure they remained unnoticed. The brief was to create a place to retreat to and relax in, a serene environment with no distractions, where you lie relaxing in your dark, bottomless pool looking up at the curved, floating “sky above. 5. Indoor/outdoor pool, East Sussex Housed in a modern flat roofed extension to the impressive family home in East Sussex, the pool seamlessly blends into its surroundings and has become an integral and impressive element to the property. The design brief for this project was to design and build a contemporary pool which could be used and enjoyed all year round, which was easy to maintain and energy efficient, and above all, suited to everyday family use. The key concept behind the design was dual use in a stylish architectural space. This project features a recent design innovation: a set of mirrored doors which run the length of the pool and continued page 26 >

A major contributor to heat and energy conservation is a welldesigned pool cover, and with this particularly innovative design, Guncast ensured maximum efficiency by creating a bespoke automatic cover, which was designed to fit over the pool’s infinity edge. 6. Spa hotel infinity edge vitality pool Guncast, in association with leading experts in filtration, constructed this vitality pool for a boutique hotel in Lancashire. The pool incorporated a stainless steel hydro-massage bench, a swim-in full body massage station with thirty mini-massage jets, and a further two swan neck massage stations. The infinity edges offered uninterrupted views over the Ribble Valley from two sides. The swimming pool area is exquisitely designed to reflect the surroundings of the countryside whilst delivering ultimate relaxation for the hotels guests.
West Bromwich Leisure Centre Important regeneration for the residents of Sandwell A soft play area will be incorporated within a feature drum with coloured glazing and glazed screens to the café area, and there will be a central welcoming reception accessed through automatic bi-parting glazed doors. Facilities for the disabled will include accessible toilets and changing facilities as well as disabled parking and the Centre will be secured through CCTV and fire alarms throughout the facility. Hard and soft landscaping will both be included at the Centre as well as car parking. It is challenging working on a site close to a residential area because work has to be organised at the best times to avoid noise pollution, but this is something all involved in the scheme are committed to achieving. Councillor Paul Moor, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “This is just one of a whole host of new leisure centres Sandwell Council is building. We are investing in the future to make sure people have modern, high quality leisure facilities.” Tom Watson MP for West Bromwich East said: “The new leisure centre will be another great boost to West Bromwich, alongside the many improvements taking place in the town, including the recently opened New Square development. ”For years, the people of West Bromwich have demanded a brand new swimming pool to replace the Gala Baths and now the council is delivering such a facility. I am sure the leisure centre will be well used by the community when it opens next year.”
Elite Aluminium Systems Ltd was formed in 1993 and has gained a strong reputation within the architectural aluminium glazing industry for delivering a high quality service that is cost effective and within programme.

Work is well on track on the new West Bromwich Leisure Centre on the corner of Barton Street and Moore Street. After a lengthy tender process, DC Leisure and building partner Pellikaan Construction Ltd were awarded the contract to design, build, operate and maintain the new centre, which is due to open next summer. Pellikaan, the building contractor, has been involved from the tender stage, working closely with DC Leisure and Roberts Limbrick to develop this high quality design and build sports complex, which will be completed in summer 2014. Facilities in the new centre will include a 25m pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room, four-court sports hall, 100-station fitness suite, two dance studios/activity rooms, indoor children’s adventure play centre and café. It is located on a sloping site in an area comprising of housing, shops, primary healthcare and police station, near to West Bromwich town centre. Local involvement and regeneration are important factors for the project, stimulated by the enthusiasm and support from Sandwell Council. The Centre has benefited Future Skills Sandwell students by providing training and employment opportunities and at least ten local students are involved in the construction. Designed by Roberts Limbrick Ltd, the building will be two-storeys and benefit from glulam beams. It is a steel frame, composite steel structure with a concrete floor. A special time capsule was buried on the site when work first started, containing a snapshot of life in 2013 and was buried by two Future Skills Sandwell apprentices. The capsule contained West Bromwich Albion memorabilia, local newspapers, information about the area’s regeneration and even an Argos catalogue to show future generations the gadgets and gizmos available in 2013. Sandwell Deputy Leader Councillor Steve Eling said: “With doom and gloom in the headlines, coming into West Bromwich and seeing fantastic regeneration and redevelopment work underway creates a really positive feeling. “We are proud of the new opportunities planned for our young people and are confident that we are helping to grow a skilled and employable workforce.” All parts of the Centre are linked by a central main street/ concourse. The circulation concourse will be filled with natural light and exposed glulam beams, while main facilities will be accessed with a lift and feature stairs. The first floor sports hall will be linked to the studio and the main pool will have exposed glulam beams and spectator seating.

New pool controllers from Gaffey Gaffey Technical Services Ltd is pleased to announce the UK launch of two new pool water disinfection controllers for the commercial pool market. The new PC DYNAMICS, manufactured by German pool technology specialists, dinotec GmbH, is designed specifically for the commercial pool market and includes some unique functions and engineer- friendly features for ease of installation and commissioning. The PC DYNAMICS allows very simple operation and menu navigation for both the operator and service engineer, but at the same time provides all of the control options and measuring accuracy required of a public pool controller. Some of the standard features include a pressure proof (closed) sample cell for return of the pool water, automatic electronic sensor cleaning & recalibration, chemical tank low-level alarm inputs, selectable 1 or 2-point pH calibration and an additional output channel which can be selected for two directional +/- pH control, or for controlling a PAC flocculent pump.
Also as standard, the DYNAMICS offers pH, free chlorine (potentiostatic), redox, temperature and sample flow rate measurement, all displayed on a large back-lit LCD screen. The controller, sample cell and sensors are kept tidily out of sight and protected from the plant room environment by a sleek, quick release cover. The DYNAMICS will be of particular benefit to public pool facilities requiring robust disinfection control and the flexibility to add additional data and web based communication, if required. A pH and redox only version is also available for less demanding applications. The chloriDES TRIO has been developed by Gaffey to serve as a robust and reliable ‘entry level’ pH and free chlorine controller for commercial pool use. Utilising well proven copper-platinum amperometric cell design, the TRIO provides the pool operator ®
with a simple touch sensitive ‘short cut’ menu system for fast access to all the basic everyday operator functions, as well as an on-board event archive, but does not compromise on control quality or durability.
Andrew Gaffey, Sales Director comments “There is a shortage of choice in the commercial pool controller market at the entry level. Many pool controllers on the market include high-end data and communication facilities as standard, pushing up the price to a point where it becomes out of reach for many pool operators who often have no desire to use these features. The TRIO addresses this problem perfectly whilst still affording all the necessary control features and excellent build quality”. The introduction of the new controllers marks the start of a busy year ahead for Gaffey, with several new product launches scheduled for the spring of 2014. Both the PC DYNAMICS and chloriDES® TRIO systems are available from Gaffey through a network of Approved Installation and Service Partners located throughout the UK. Technical support, spares and product training are provided by Gaffey from their factory in Accrington, Lancashire.

UV Systems for Spas & Hydro Pools With the rise of health centres and leisure clubs throughout the UK, a key feature in many modern facilities is the inclusion of spas and hydro pools. As a specialist aquatic application, spas and hydro pools feature high turnover rates, high bather loads, increased turbulence and water temperatures above 35oC. This combination of factors provides a perfect breeding ground for harmful micro-organisms such as E-Coli, Legionella and chlorine resistant strains such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, significantly increasing the risk to bathers. As a result many leading leisure operators, health clubs, aquatic facilities and hotel chains have adopted UV disinfection systems to control this risk. UV Systems offers 3 main benefits: -
Improves Health and Safety
UV is a highly effective disinfection technology used widely in drinking water. A correctly sized medium pressure UV treatment system will allow operators to reduce their residual chlorine levels down to as little as 0.5 ppm. Even the 17 known chlorine-resistant pathogenic micro-organisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia are easily treated with UV.
Reduces Harmful Chloramines
Chloramines are the unpleasant chemical formations created when chlorine combines with the nitrogenous compounds introduced to the pool by bathers. Chloramines are powerful irritants which are responsible for eye, skin, respiratory complaints and the unpleasant ‘chlorine smell’ commonly associated with indoor pools. Chloramines are also corrosive and can lead to the damage of pool buildings and structures, through stress corrosion cracking.
Improves Water Quality
Medium pressure UV systems initiate photo-oxidation reactions which remove unwanted organic contaminants, resulting in crystal clear, sparkling water. This occurs both by direct photolysis and through the production of hydroxyl radicals, a highly reactive
34
atg UV Technology, ECL Twin Lamp Medium Pressure UV system
chemical species which oxidises and breaks down organic compounds and contaminants. These reactions lower the organic loading of the water and significantly improve its clarity and quality.
UV Systems for Spas & Hydro Pools
UV manufacturers now offer a specialist range of UV systems tailored to meet the requirements of spas and hydro pools. UV systems for this application are sized to treat flow rates of 10 – 50 m3/hr, and typically feature a single lamp design, using polychromatic medium pressure UV lamps. It is important to note that monochromatic ‘low pressure amalgam’ UV lamps should not be used for aquatic applications, as they lack the ability to operate of elevated water temperatures, and do not provide the necessary UV output to improve water quality, and reduced problem chloramines. In order to accommodate the reduced installation space often associated with aquatic plant rooms, manufacturers such as atg UV Technology in the UK, and ETS in the U.S.A. now offer in-line UV systems in 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” versions, designed to install directly into the pipework. In addition to their smaller foot print and easier installation, the inline design provides greater hydraulic and treatment efficiency than standard S shape UV systems, lowering both capital and operational costs.
UV Specifications
UV systems should include: 316L stainless steel chambers, UV intensity monitoring, automatic wiper systems, strainer baskets, fully variable power for energy savings during periods of no/low use. UV manufactures should always follow best practise when sizing a UV system, ensuring to supply UV equipment capable of providing a 60 mJ/cm2 dose (average) at a UVT (UV Transmittance) of 94%. For more information on UV treatment for aquatic applications, please email Barry.hopton@atguv.com, call : 01942 216161 or visit www.atguv.com atg UV Technology, showing an ECL-113-5 Installation on a hydro pool application

Chloramines in your pool water can cause unpleasant smells, itchy skin, burning red eyes and attack the pool environment through corrosive condensation. The atg UV Technology range of ECL & SX UV systems are designed to eliminate problem chloramines whilst protecting against dangerous waterborne micro-organisms, including chlorine resistent Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The result is safe, crystal clear sparkling water, fresh clean air and a more inviting bathing environment. Typically, following the installation of UV treatment, operators report a significant reduction in combined chlorine levels, reduced chlorine smell and a large reduction in the need for back washing, dilution and shock treatments.

There is such a thing as a worry free finish

Basement water palaces By Kellie Russell, Marketing Co-ordinator, Aquascapes Ltd
38
When we think of basements most of us envision a dark, damp space where the creepy crawlies dwell and everything is covered in mould. What few of us realise is that just below the heart of our home, lies a space begging to be converted into a liquid paradise and our basement can provide the perfect location for a subterranean pool / spa haven. This could range from a small six-person spa to a full-sized training pool. Why stop at just the pool? Inclusion of a steam room, sauna and bar will add another level of opulence to your personal slice of underground heaven. Whilst planning permission is not always necessary, there are building regulations that need to be adhered to and as this is a specialist area to work in, it is imperative that experienced contractors such as Aquascapes Ltd are employed for the challenges that present themselves with working below ground level. These regulations stipulate that all the walls and floors must be’ tanked’ for waterproofing purposes, Ventilation and insulation is of paramount importance due to lack of windows
and a fire exit from the basement will almost always need to be incorporated into the project, more often than not the existing walls will also need to be underpinned for added strength. Expert engineering commences at design stage and must be precisely executed at every level through to client handover. Thinking outside the box is the required element for any contractor involved in accomplishing their clients’ visions; whether this is a cavernous aqua paradise or just a sanctuary to escape the pressures of everyday life. Limited space no longer means you cannot indulge your fantasies! If you can dream it, you can have it. So why not escape into your underground water palace for a dip into a heated waterfall cascading into a clover shaped pool. Extravagance holds no boundaries. Let your imaginations run wild. www.aquascapes-uk.com
Heatsavr™ - the amazing liquid pool cover When planning for the build of a swimming pool, whether it’s indoor or outdoor, a domestic pool, bespoke and aesthetically pleasing, or a full size commercial leisure facility, skimmer or deck level, it is essential to take into consideration protecting the pool from excessive heat and moisture loss, especially in today’s climate of rising energy costs. The standard method of reducing heat and water loss is to install a traditional pool cover, but if you’ve invested in a beautiful pool, pleasingly shaped and lit, why cover it from view? And if you’re running a large, busy pool in a hotel or leisure centre that’s open 18 hours a day, covering a pool during quiet periods is impractical to say the least. Not only that, recent recommendations from PWTAG suggest that pool covers should be checked regularly for any contamination and cleaned with 10mg/litre of chlorinated water.
Heatsavr™ – Fit and Forget
Heatsavr is a means of protecting a pool from excessive heat and moisture loss. It creates a totally flexible automatic cover that works by forming a transparent monomolecular layer across the entire surface of the water which significantly reduces evaporation, a major cause of heat loss. As much as 65% of the energy used within a leisure centre will be used for pool heating and ventilation. By using Heatsavr as a pool cover, energy bills could be lowered as much as 30%. In real terms, this could result in an actual spend reduction in the region of £10,000 per annum (based on a standard 25m x 10m pool). Lindors Hotel: “As we now use Heatsavr, for the past week we have been setting the pool air temperature back to 25oC between 9:30pm to 7:30am. This has improved the comfort of the pool hall.” Recotherm did a calculation to compare previous and current energy costs for their pool (117m2). 30oC 24 hours a day= £12,015.44 pa. 25oC + Heatsavr = £9,090.90 pa. A saving of £2,924.54 per annum
In addition to the energy savings, Heatsavr also maintains a more pleasant environment for both bathers and staff as the humidity levels within the pool hall are suppressed and reduce throughout the day. As a result, the building is protected from accelerated moisture ingress and corrosion of equipment which could lead to considerable maintenance costs.
Heatsavr™ and the Environment
Heatsavr was shortlisted as a Finalist at the UK Environmental & Energy Awards 2013 within the category of Energy Product/Service of the Year. The judges were very impressed with the submission which demonstrated the genuine value of a product that not only saves on water heating and consumption, it also reduces overall energy usage including dehumidification and air heating. Since introducing the Heatsavr system in 2007, a combination of effects has helped cut running costs at Wrexham Waterworld by more than £22,000 annually. “As far as we are concerned the benefits of using Heatsavr have greatly exceeded our initial expectations – it really is the best thing since sliced bread.” Greg Ryan – Pool Manager, Wrexham Waterworld
A world-leading, highly regarded environmental assessment method and ratings system for buildings recommends that using Heatsavr as an environmentally sound and energy efficient option of pool covering could be used to demonstrate compliance and help gain recognition with that system. The Carbon Trust says that using a pool cover cuts pool energy use by 10 to 30 per cent. By using Heatsavr over traditional pool covers, a facility can cut costs, improve energy efficiency and reduce its impact on the environment through lower CO2 emissions. For further information on Heatsavr and energy saving advice for your facility, contact Peter Marshall of Brenntag UK & Ireland on 07920 589488 or email peter.marshall@brenntag.co.uk
Effortless Pool
The immediate benefit of using Heatsavr is that it starts to work as a pool cover the moment the water is calm – however, unlike traditional pool covers, Heatsavr still works when bathers are in the pool water, albeit to a lesser degree. Simple to use with virtually no capital outlay, apart from the cost of a pump kit, Heatsavr is the perfect solution for all types of commercial or domestic pools wanting to control their energy expenditure. With a domestic pool, especially if it is designed to be pleasing to the eye, a traditional cover could potentially ruin the aesthetics of its setting and requires regular cleaning on both sides, not to mention removal before use and space for storage. Heatsavr is a means of protecting the pool without the need for installation of a pool cover, leaving the user to enjoy the beauty of their pool safe in the knowledge that they are also saving on the costs of heating, evaporation and dehumidification. One option for a domestic pool is the use of the Ecosavr™ fish as it is hassle-free – just snip the fish, place it in the pool and relax. The fish sinks to the bottom and as the pressure increases, the liquid escapes through a patented valve system. It works 24 hours a day and has the added benefit of trapping moisture within the pool, reducing top-up requirements.

Water parks create a splash in 2014 The wet leisure industry primarily consists of swimming pools, spas and hot tubs, but it would be unwise to ignore the many fantastic water parks and water slides that are currently under construction across the world. This year looks to be a great year for the water park industry and the development of these new water parks and slides definitely confirms this. With the construction of what is set to be the world’s tallest water slide underway, and whole new parks featuring references to characters from some games and TV shows alike, SwimConstruct decided to take a look at these fantastic developments.
Riding high
40
The Schlitterbahn Development Group is carrying out the design and build contract on ‘Verrückt’, which will open at Schlitterbahn Kansas City in May, and has been eager to keep the height of the water slide under wraps, touting it as ‘the world’s tallest water slide’. The Company has commented that the hill the four riders will overcome is more than 50 feet high. A specially designed raft will plummet down a slide that is more or less the equivalent of a 17-storey drop. Riders will face 264 steps to reach the starting
point; the tower for this has been constructed from recycled railroad tanker cars. It is as crazy as it sounds and the theme park and development group wanted to relay this in its German name which translates to ‘Insane’. It is hoped that the first riders of ‘Verrückt’ will be able to make their splash when the water park opens for the 2014 season in May.
Adrenaline boost
Rides that get the adrenaline pumping are obviously in vogue this season as Roaring Springs Park in Idaho is also taking delivery of a ride that will blow your socks off. The new Corkscrew Cavern will make use of some of the infrastructure already in place for the Cliffhanger ride, which was introduced to the park last year. Cliffhanger treats participants to a vertical sixstorey drop from a launching capsule, but if that’s not enough
visitors to the Park can now enter a launching capsule and be propelled through the Corkscrew Cavern. When launching from The Corkscrew Cavern, riders will enter a 32-inch enclosed tunnel, build up top speeds of 38 feet per second and go through a 360 degree loop. The ride will open on 14th May.
Open season
The US water park season, which begins in May, will also see the opening of a completely new water park in Nevada. Cowabunga Bay Las Vegas will be a 1950s and ‘60s themed water park; its main feature will be the 35,000sq ft Surf-a-Rama wave pool that is set inside a former 1960s drive-in theatre. In addition to this there will be the Cowabunga River; a lazy river where visitors will be able to float through spray features, past giant surfboards and a ’67 VW Bug, Beach Blanket Banzai; a 600ft giant water slide, and Good Vibrations; a tube slide which drops riders into two giant “rebound chambers,” causing the tube to climb the walls and rebound from side to side, amongst other exciting rides. In total the Park will feature more than 25 water slides and attractions, food will be provided in two restaurants and a shop and VIPs Cabanas will be available. Polin Waterparks and Pool Systems are providing rides and the development is underway by Huish Entertainment, the development group who currently run the Cowabunga Bay Water Park in Utah.
Rides will include a gigantic family wave pool, a winding adventure river, speed-racing slides, raft rides and one of the world’s largest interactive water play areas for youngsters. The Park will be split into zones relating to different shows with the Omniverse; featuring rides based on the world of every seven year old’s favourite show, Ben 10, the Adventure Zone introducing riders to Jake and his friends from Adventure Time and more. The Humungaslide, based on one of the Ben 10 characters, will be an intense raft race; two rafts will race each other in circular 23m hire slides, speed through twists, turns and other surprises before being dropped eight metres into the clutches of the Humungousaur. The Rainfall Rainicorn super tube ride, associated with the half unicorn, half rainbow Lady Rainicorn from Adventure Time, will have riders feeling like they are riding a rainbow with tight turns and steep drops before catapulting them into a splash pool landing. Other rides feature characters from the Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo and The Amazing World of Gumball. Cartoon Network Amazone is set to open in the first half of 2014 and development is being carried out by Amazon Falls Co. Ltd.
Find your CHI
Legoland California Resort is adding to its current water park rides this summer with the opening of the Lego Legends of Chima Water Park, a new zone dedicated to the Legends of Chima product where animal tribes battle for control of a precious energy source called ‘CHI’. The Park will feature a Lion Temple Wave Pool complete with 20ft tall Lego Lion archway and 40ft tall ‘floating’ Mount Cavora, as well as a hand’s on water play area with blast cannons in Cragger’s Swap and Build-A-Boat; an interactive play experience giving children the opportunity to bring their creativity to life by building their own boats, changing the currents, build and dodge obstacles and race their friends. Construction of the 2.1 acre water park zone is currently underway by Commercial Builders Inc and is due to open on Memorial Day weekend.
Worldwide appeal
41
America isn’t the only country getting in on the 2014 water park action though with Thailand joining in by way of Cartoon Network Amazone. This water park will feature rides based on the leading TV shows aired on Cable and Sky channel Cartoon Network and be situated on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard. Set within 14 acres of coastal plains with ocean views the water park is just a stones throw from the Bang Saray resort and just 90 minutes from Bangkok Airport.
Recotherm - driving down pool hall climate control costs by pioneering in technical innovation

Did you know that up 60% of the energy consumption costs associated with running an indoor pool facility are incurred dehumidifying and controlling the quality of the air in the pool hall alone? So utilising the latest technologies to drive down this cost is key to gaining long-term operational savings. A UK based company, Recotherm Ltd, is at the forefront of this technological drive with their highly innovative range of indoor pool climate control units. Recotherm was founded by Martin Killen and Bob Griffiths in 1985. Both men studied, and then spent their entire working lives in the field of environmental engineering, first with large and small contractors and then selling capital equipment into the industry. They began supplying plate recuperators to the air-handling industry, some of which were fitted to indoor swimming pool units. It was when they saw how other people were dealing with the problem that they realised they could solve the problem better. Martin says “We had been working extensively with heat-pump based equipment and, with our engineering backgrounds, were extremely familiar with it. We realised, after doing the calculations and testing our theory, that you do not need a heat pump to control the climate of an indoor pool hall in the UK, and that there could be a much more cost-effective way of doing it, resulting in lower energy consumption, lower on-going servicing and repair costs, and a better quality of air in the pool hall for the customer”. Once Recotherm made the decision to stop using heat pumps to dehumidify the air, they redesigned their equipment layout to maximise the heat recovery. When frequency inverter technology came along, Recotherm were quick to recognise the potential of this emerging technology and were quick to incorporate them into the fresh air units they had already developed. The result of over three decades of development, Recotherm now boast a comprehensive range of fresh-air indoor pool climate control systems to suit all applications from the smallest indoor private domestic pool, to the largest of leisure complexes, with well over a thousand units in operation all over the UK. It’s not just a comprehensive, innovative, advanced and quality product range which sets Recotherm apart though. Their ‘can-do’ attitude when it comes to fulfilling customer needs has also won them fans, not to mention new contracts. For example, Recotherm were approached by IAC Service Group Ltd, a UK wide design and build, M&E services company who boast many hotel groups among their clientele including many in the Holiday Inn chain. IAC were having a number of issues with their hotel-operating customers with heat pump based pool hall climate-control systems, revolving around performance, reliability, noise, and running and service costs. They called in Recotherm following a recommendation from a colleague who’d worked with them before on a previous project, to see if they could assist solving their problems. The short answer was, they could. The new Recotherm unit proved a great success, being demonstrably cheaper to run, easier and cheaper to maintain and operate, quieter, with excellent quality of construction, and extremely reliable. The one down-side was the time and labour costs during installation incurred because the new
Recotherm unit was a different size to the one it replaced, meaning that connecting pipework, wiring and ducting required significant modification. Martin Killen offered to address this if more units were required in the future by redesigning the outer casing and connections so that they were in the same positions as the unit being removed. As a result of this, a rolling programme of replacing all the heat pump units in each location has now been implemented. Martin Killen says of the future “I believe the drive for ever more efficient systems will continue. This will mean higher efficiency recuperators and better fans. We’ve already moved away from frequency inverters to even more efficient EC fans in our smaller capacity units, and we anticipate being able to offer this new, superior fan technology on our larger units in the very near future”. Stretch Ceilings Stretch ceilings have been around since the time when a wet cloth was stretched and dried to create a false ceiling. While the technique is very similar, today’s stretch ceilings consist of a suspended ceiling system that uses a lightweight PVC membrane and a perimeter track. These stretch and clip into the track. In addition to ceilings, the system can be used for wall coverings, light diffusers, floating panels, exhibitions and creative shapes. Stretch ceilings allow the incorporation of all types of light fixtures, grilles, and fixing points by the use of a proprietary background support. The technology was invented in Europe as an interior enhancement technology. The essence of the product is the use of a thin plastic film to envelope a firm frame. The shape of such installation is defined by the hidden profile, while the beauty comes from the film, which can be of any colour, finish and transparency. This technology is an essential component of both construction and decorative line of business. Fabric material is a 0.2mm thick PVC based fully recyclable stretch membrane. The material comes in a vast array of colours and finishes including matt, satin, lacquer, metallic, perforated, and translucent for lighting diffusers, backlighting and projection. The material can be printed or painted for additional effects, is entirely waterproof, washable and impermeable to vapour. It is maintenance-free, hygienic, non-toxic and is fire rated to new euroclass standard B-s1 d0 in accordance with the EN 13501.1, equivalent in the UK to Class ‘O’. Lightweight sheets are purpose made from roll material to form any shape and size typically up to 50sq m in one piece. Each panel incorporates an ultrasonically welded ‘Harpoon Edge’, which clips into the track. Typically the aluminium or PVC semi-concealed track is the preferred choice for most architects and designers, enabling curves, domes, vaults and many other shapes to be formed with ease. Indoor pools are popular nowadays, and making sure they have a suitable ceiling is a great benefit to them. Stretch ceilings are absolutely ideal for pool environments because the stretch material is unaffected by chlorine, moisture, sulphur and any other caustic atmospheres. The membrane of the material is waterproof, prefinished and provides each pool with a complete vapour barrier that certainly ensures that no corrosive vapours pass through the ceiling and above it. Hotel owners choosing to have an indoor swimming pool don’t have to end it there. They can have a beautiful ceiling for the swimmers to be amazed at when they look up and are relaxing in the pool. Ceilings are now an important part of any domestic or private premises catering for the hospitality service, it ensures that the best service is given for customers so that future business
is a possibility thanks to reputation and quality of work. Stretch fabric ceilings also provide energy saving benefits by forming a thin layer of thermal isolation over the structural elements of the house, thereby reducing heating and cooling needs. Such contemporary technology will also improve the air quality in a room by containing the emission of dust and bacteria that accumulates over the years from drywall, a feature that has placed them in high demand by medical facilities. Another benefit that comes with this material is that it improves the acoustics of a room, office, concert hall or even an industrial facility.

Due to its leading position in the stretch ceiling market, Creative Ceilings offers a 15-year guarantee, which is the longest guarantee of any stretch ceiling company in the industry. The Company has been installing stretch ceilings since the late 1990s and formed Creative Ceilings Ltd in 2003 to continue the dedicated installation and distribution of these ceilings. Due to the continued success and expansion, the Company moved premises in 2008, opening a dedicated training centre and showroom. In 2009, Creative Ceilings joined Extenzo AFC as an official partner and opened the first UK manufacturing facility, using Extenzo’s 30 years of knowledge and expertise, adopting their ISO 9001:2000 standard. A stretch ceiling is a suspended ceiling that is stretched and secured to the perimeter of a room or space, and the areas it can span can be as large as 80sq m before a joining track needs to be fitted.
The ceiling can be perfectly flat or shapes can be used to form arches, curves and domes. The membrane can be used to assist in the acoustic treatment of a room, it can be used to diffuse lighting to enhance natural daylight or create stunning light effects. Other benefits include helping to assist in prevention of the spread of bacteria and disease, distributes conditioned air, can be used as a radiant heated ceiling. The membrane can be printed on or graphics adhered to it to create a personalised ceiling, and it can act as the vapour barrier in the swimming pool environment. The installation of stretch ceilings is done by highly trained professionals and is advantageous because they can be fit in a few hours, no drying time is required, the worksite is dry with no smells or dust, and the rooms are immediately available for use. Creative Ceilings offer a range of ceilings and walls for different purposes, including aesthetics, to provide beautiful fabric walls in a wide choice of design, traditional ceilings with over 100 colours and ten textures, printed ceilings that are completely personalised, translucent ceilings with several grades to create distinct luminous

Lessons we can all learn from a Show’s change of venue
46
Dorian Davies of Doric Marketing Show season is upon us again, only this time there’s a distinctly ‘Midlands’ feel about things as Spatex ditches its ancestral home in Brighton where it has seemingly been since the Jurassic Period, for the sparkly new, green pastures of.... Coventry. Having visited the Ricoh Arena twice - once for Spatex’s new venue launch event, the other to watch the GB women’s football team booted out of the 2012 Olympics by Sweden - I have to say I think it’s a good move. The Ricoh complex is perfect for an exhibition of Spatex’s size and scope. It also has acres of free on-site parking and the arena is located within the proverbial stone’s throw of the M6, and within two hours drive of 75% of the UK’s population. It should also bring comfort to the many nay-sayers who have previously criticised the event for being too southern-centric which, they say, meant that they stayed away from the event previously. So, all in all, taking all the prior feedback in to consideration, and having seen the new venue and the benefits it affords both exhibitor and visitor alike, I think it’s a good move. However, what I ‘think’ matters not a fiddle. Nor does what anyone else ‘thinks’ matter likewise. The proof of the pudding - and the only thing which does matter - will be the feedback from the exhibitors and visitors when the show closes on February 4th. Sure, there’s enough accumulated feedback over the years and more recently when the new venue was announced, to give the impression that the relocation should be a success, but we won’t actually ‘know’ until the fat lady/bloke sings! Are the exhibitors happy? Did they get more footfall than they did in Brighton? Did they see more people from different parts of the country than they would have done in Brighton? Did they take more orders or sign up more customers as a result? Were the visitors to the show happy? Did prior critics of the old location now come along? Did the new location put off visitors from the south who stayed away but would have gone to Brighton? Were the facilities for after-show networking as good and as productive as before? We can only guess, the answers will come afterwards. And therein lies the salient lesson. Because only by actually trying out the new location and facilities will the Spatex organisers find out if the decisions made based on the feedback they’ve had will be vindicated. They can have a reasonably good guess, but this is the only way they will actually ‘know’. In the absence of a crystal ball, that is the best they can do. However, they would never know the answer had they not made the decision to commit to it in the first place. In a similar vein, personally, I ‘think’ it’s bonkers that we have two trade shows in an industry as minuscule and focussed as ours, and I ‘think’ it would be better served if all resources were concentrated into one. However, what I ‘think’ doesn’t matter, if the
organisers of both events can put on shows which are economically viable and deliver them the results they seek, and the trade are willing to vote with their feet and wallets and patronise two shows in the Midlands barely two weeks apart, that’s all that matters. So what are we as business owners going to do differently, and what action are we going to take in 2014 to maximise our potentials and deliver us the growth we seek and deserve as the economic recovery beds-in? After all, doing the same thing will, logically, only deliver us the same results? And, whilst the economy may be recovering, that doesn’t automatically translate as extra new business for us. We need to go out and get it; and we need to be doing things radically differently from what we used to do prior to the economic collapse in 2008, as the ways in which consumers absorb marketing messages and information, and the devices they’re using to do so, have changed in ways we could only imagine back such a relatively short time ago.
