Other Magazines worth mentioning

AS Media Studies – Magazine Industry Question Other magazines to mention. For a really high grade it’s important to situate NME into a wider context of magazines when discussing how the industry is likely to develop (vital for any answer). Here are some titles to use.

Smash Hits – popular magazine which in 2006 closed and went online only. A victim of Web 2.0.

The Fly – biggest circulation music mag in the UK – 100,000. Free. Revenue only from advertising. Small, low production values.

Clash – independently owned, focused distribution in London. 47000 circulation (bigger than NME). Advertising (per page cost) is cheaper than NME but cover price higher. Very high production values. An artefact that readers want to touch, own. Strongly arty, upmarket (86%ABC1). An example of the way that print can survive?

I Like Music (www.ilikemusic.com)- online only, prosumer – student journalists etc

Lonny (www.lonymag.com) - Another good example of an online only magazine (though not a music mag). It mimics a real magazine (turn page simulations etc) but is entirely free content. Advertising revenue only – good contracts with big advertisers.

But online only does not guarantee success. The established themusicmagazine.co.uk has recently disappeared.
