Empowered, Impassioned And Hopeful With the upcoming general elections in mind, Fianna Fail Senator, Darragh O’Brien has released a manifesto for the Dublin Fingal constituency. In it he brings together all of the big issues that have been brought to his attention by locals over the last number of years. The manifesto is the first of its kind by an electoral candidate and one that sets the bar for any future incarnations of it. The manifesto was launched on Thursday, 7th January last in Gibney’s Video Bar in Malahide to a teeming crowd of over 300 campaign activists, party supporters, and fellow local party members including Darragh Butler, Eoghan O’Brien, Adrian Henchy, Brian Dennehy and Fianna Fail’s other general election candidate for the local area, Lorraine Clifford-Lee. Everyone was in high spirits as young and old alike gathered together to support the endeavour of the senator. Once the room was suitably packed, O’Brien took to the stage and delivered an impassioned speech to an eager crowd. In it he eloquently outlined his plans for the future should Fianna Fail be elected to power and offered thoughts on the current state of the nation. He spoke about how his manifesto was created to localise national issues, such as crime and policing. He told the crowd that despite an increase in rural crime levels, local garda stations had been either closed or downsized, giving the examples of both Malahide Garda Station, which has seen cuts in garda numbers and operational hours and Rush Garda Station which has been permanently closed. He

the Dublin Fingal constituency, Senator Darragh O’Brien and Lorraine Clifford Lee.” He went on to give a damning indictment of the current Government’s practices, saying that; “the last five years have shown that Fine Gael and Labour are driven by a very narrow agenda. Enda Kenny himself let the cat out of the bag when he talked about wanting to introduce ‘US style taxes’ if he is returned to power. The people of Dublin Fingal know what that means – it means further degradation of services and further concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people. The people of Dublin Fingal value fairness in taxation and fairness in the delivery of public services.” He concluded by saying; “I look forward to working with Lorraine and Darragh as we campaign all across the constituency demonstrating to people that a vote for Fianna Fáil is a vote for fairness.” The speeches ended, and the platform was cleared for a band to take the stage. The night wore on with party members, campaigners and locals mingling, socialising and generally celebrating the release of the manifesto. The atmosphere was one of fun, but also anticipation of what the coming weeks will bring for the party and what they may encounter on their campaign trail. See picture special on page 4

When there is a majority party in the Dail they have no accountability. In my opinion the best possible outcome would be a minority Fine Gael government, with Fine Gael responsible and accountable to the Dail, but with another party there, so they couldn’t have the usual avoidance of questions and issues. People always think the current election is an important one, but almost certainly after the election we will have the same policies enacted as the previous government and the one before that and the one before that. It will be the same thing just different faces. When asked about interests he has other than broadcasting, he said, “I read. I am a big reader. Portmarnock School Launches Its Own Bank Students of Portmarnock Community School have launched their own in-school bank as part of the the The Build a Bank Challenge. The bank, which the students have named ‘The Ice Bank’ is managed by student, Dara O’Boyle with a management team of six students and was launched by Dublin GAA star, James McCarthy on Tuesday last, 12th January. Build a Bank is an initiative of AIB, where schools are encouraged to introduce the concept of banking to students. Ger Heskin, Manager of AIB in Swords told the County Leader, “The Build a Bank initiative is one that has been running within AIB for a number of years. We try to get involved in a local school and develop a relationship with the community and encourage the students to become involved in building their own bank, with their own manage-

ment team from manager, assistant manager, digital manager and so on. There are six members on the team and they open accounts and act just like a bank. We support them once a week in the school, helping o build their skills, managing a team and developing relationships with their own community. This is something we strongly encourage, which provides a strong sense of responsibility in the process. This is a legitimate bank where students open accounts and make transactions. We encourage them to save and get into the banking and saving ethos. There is also a competition at the end of it, with a regional final taking place in March, with the winners going on to the national finals in May,” she said. Transition Year student and manager of the bank, Dara O’Boyle said, “The idea of setting up the bank is to encourage students to save money in the school, and special guest, James McCarthy is helping us to publicise it. You don’t have to go to the branch to carry out transactions, it is all set up in the school and the bank will be open every Thursday. There is great excitement among the students and we hope it will be a great success,” said Dara.

Local primary schools were amongst the over 3,000 thousand 4th, 5th and 6th class students from across the country who displayed their class projects at the Dublin Fair. Supported by the RDS for the seventh successive year, the RDS Primary Science Fair Dublin, which displays at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, proved once again to be very popular with tens of thousands of visitors to the primary school projects. Working under the supervision of their teacher, the entire class are encouraged to be inquisitive and curious about the world around them. This led to sixth classes from the North County working on projects. Among the imaginative and inventive projects by North County pupils included. “How do chemical changes and the addition of different ingredients affect the properties of materials?” by St Mary’s National School, Garristown. Do Light and Temperature have an effect on the growth and development of plants? was the project of St Andrew’s National School, Church Rd, Malahide. The project of Thornleigh Educate Together National School from Swords was about The Good, The Bad and The Germ? St Oliver Plunkett’s Ntional School Balrothery pupils asked ‘What effect has sugar on our bodies? and St Patrick’s Senior NS, Skerries brought their project ‘Beach Ecology: Which beach in Skerries is most suitable for plant and animal life?’ Better teaching of STEM in primary education is considered by many experts to be crucial in strengthening Ireland’s international science performance.

A group of enterprising 2nd year students from Colaiste Choilm Secondary School in Swords have made an historic breakthrough. The product they developed, as part of the school’s enterprise programme, has been accepted for sale by SuperValu in the Pavilions Shopping Centre. The product, a football boot cleaning kit, was developed by students, Luke Murphy, Harry Maher, Darragh Power and Eoin Kinsella, and such was its success, after skilful negotiation by the talented quartet, that the store decided to stock it, just before Christmas. Lorcan O’Hanlon, Store Manager of SuperValu told the

County Leader, “The students presented their product to us about three months ago and I gave them some feedback around the packaging and the legislation that they needed to comply with. The four of them went back and did all their research and presented me with this product and we are delighted to support this excellent project.” A very proud Business teacher, Karl Foster said, “This is a momentous occasion, as it is our first time in 11 years that one of our students’ products has made it on to the shelves of a shop in the commercial sector. It even has its own barcode. It’s amazing to think that these boys are only 13 and

They also designed their own logo and got professional packaging for the product and they got feedback from SuperValu about what to do and what not to do. Luke Murphy, one of the Colaiste Choilm entrepreneurs said, “We knew the Enterprise Awards take place in the

school every year. It took us a while to come up with the idea of a football cleaning kit. It developed very well and it sold well in the school. We were lucky enough to have it stocked on the shelves in SuperValu and we hope to go on to the county finals later in the year,” said Luke.

Skerries RNLI Crew Rescue Lucky Molly

Skerries RNLI volunteers AJ Hughes and David Knight are pictured with Mollie the dog after she was rescued from the sea at Skerries

Skerries RNLI volunteer crew members rescued a dog that had been stranded on rocks by the tide on Tuesday last, 12th January. “Mollie”, a border collie cross, had been missing since the previous evening after being frightened and running away. She was spotted in the Red Island area in Skerries, however by the time her owners had located her, she had made her way onto the rocks behind the lifeboat station and had been cut off by the rising tide. At the time a combination of the location and conditions meant that launching the lifeboat and attempting a rescue from the sea was not an option. However, volunteer crew members, David Knight and AJ Hughes were able to wade safely out to the rocks from the shoreline wearing their personal protection equipment and using a safety line. Mollie was handed back to her grateful owners at the shoreline and they took her straight to the vet for a full check over.

Tourism Boost For North County Fingal County Council is delighted to announce that Swords, and the Dublin Airport Environs have ranked highly in the annual IBAL Litter Survey, with Swords ranking 10th, and the Dublin Airport Environs ranking 16th in towns/cities surveyed. The programme, run in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local

Government, is an alliance of companies, sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity, specifically in the areas of tourism, food and direct foreign investment is contingent on a clean, litter free environment. The Council recognises the importance of maintenance of the Dublin Airport and Swords area as a key factor in maintaining and

growing tourism in Fingal, and as a driver of economic development, delivering income, business enterprises and jobs. Up to half a billion euro per year is spent by visitors to this area. This in turn supports an estimated 20,000 jobs. Council staff have continued to maintain the transport routes to and from the Airport and environs to a very

high standard, with all areas inspected being marked as litter free, and well presented. Also mentioned were the colourful planted areas, neat and tidy green verges, paving and fencing. Similarly, Swords Main Street was marked as litter free, and noted with abundant flower displays adding to the overall excellent presentation. Conor Horgan of IBAL

said, “The environs of Dublin Airport were spotless, with the An Taisce report stating ‘there was a huge improvement at the Dublin Airport Environs sites. Given their visi-

Transformation’ which all added up to a great atmosphere on the day. This is the seventh annual walk to be held in the North County, with over 1,400 taking part in River Valley, all braving the winter weather to kick-start their fitness regime for 2016. The walk was led by County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor and Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul

Marion Brown, Fingal’s Principal Sports Officer said “This was a perfect opportunity for people to kick start their ‘Get Fit’ New Year resolutions with a short fun walk or run and to hopefully use it to start exercising on a regular basis.” The parks in the county have seen a number of upgrades in the last few years, including the addition of fitness equipment and an outdoor gym in the park in River Valley.

It’s more than a little chilly this time of year, but who is going to let a little cold weather stop them from taking their long awaited trip down the aisle? No one, that’s who! Your wedding is one of the most exciting days of your life which can also be very stressful thanks to the 101 details that needs to be organised. Follow some of our tips below to ensure you have a Spring Wedding to remember and a stress free day...

PLANNING & PREPARATION Planning and plenty of preparation is key to having the wedding you always dreamed of. Firstly, if you are going to have a traditional wedding in a church, you

would need to see if the date you want is available. This is crucial and you need to be really doing this as early as possible. The big day is something that some people might plan for a few years, however others in different situations may decide to get married with in a few months. Whatever way you decide to do things, make sure you keep your plan of action at hand. Here’s a tip, place a poster of your to-do list in your kitchen. You spend time there every day and when you are waiting on the kettle to boil, you’ll be reminded about making a few phone calls and so on.

give money, or do you try to find out what the bride and groom really need.? It is now becoming fashionable, especially for parents and close relatives and friends to help the newly weds with furnishing their new home. This is a very thoughtful gesture, as many newly married couples are saddled with large mortgages and are not in a position to provide proper furnishings for their homes yet. Presents like beds, new furnishings, kitchenware and other household gifts are highly acceptable and can be purchased in many local shops that specialise in this area.

THE VENUE This is one that should be looked at and booked well in advance of the big day. Luckily, the North County boasts many beautiful venue choices, all of which will have wedding exhibitions on throughout the year so you can meet the staff and get a true idea of what each possible venue has to offer. The staff will be on hand to take care of all your needs and will ensure that the day runs smoothly and is as stress free as possible.

THE WEDDING DRESS The focal point of the wedding for the majority of women (aside from the ceremony of course!) will be the dress. Because the temperatures are typically not too hot and not too cold over here (well, usually!), there are a lot of options for the wedding dress. It is best to choose a more versatile dress that can suit you in both warm and cold weather, just in case! (If you opt for a light dress, for example be sure to pair with a wrap). Perhaps you’d like an elegant splash of colour to your gown. There are certainly quite a few unique and stylish options and colours to choose from. The North County has an array of stunning dresses available to you, so the main problem you’ll have is trying to make your mind up!

THE RINGS The rings are just as important as anything in the wedding. There is a wide range of jewellers in the North County with a variety of beautiful rings that you and your loved ones will adore. The rings symbolise the bond you and your partner are about to make and there should be as much thought and effort put into that just as much as the rest of the day.

During the week there was a reception held for the girls at County Hall in Swords where they were presented with a gift from the Local Authority in recognition of their brilliant achievements. During interactions with the girls, this journalist found them to be gracious, articulate and pleasant young women, all with very bright futures ahead of them. They spoke to us about the way in which they came up with the idea for their project; “It started back in September when we said to ourselves and each other, ‘what do we want to achieve this year?’, and we both decided on The Young Scientist. There they will attend a Formula 1 event, where they will be taken behind the scenes and shown the inner workings of the Formula 1 racing cars, and given a demonstration of the science behind the engineering of the cars. It is not just the winners that the North County has to be proud of. Four other girls did exceptionally well in the competition. Under

Renuka Chintaplalli, Khadija Gull, Emily Tierney and Maria Wyzykowska all won awards in their categories with Renuka winning an overall runner up prize for her study on cancer. According to Dr. McNally the subject matters for each project was all down to the girls themselves; “The girls came to me. I teach science and biology, and myself and another teacher, Chris Garvey run a science club at lunch time on Tuesdays. We do it so that if any one wants to enter a competition outside of school, they can work on it there. So the girls origi-

nally came up with an idea, totally their own, based on

Renuka Chintaplalli the fact that sugar has a bad effect on C Elegans so that was the model that they chose to test it out on.”

The prize for the winners of the Young Scientist was €5,000 as well as the trip to Brussels wherein they will represent Ireland in the European Young Scientist of the year. Further emphasising their academic inclinations, when asked what they have planned for the money both girls told us that they will be putting it away and saving it for college. The reason they will do this, is they both want to enter into careers in Medicine; “Both of us actually want to become doctors, and as you probably already know, it is very expensive to go to medical school, we already have everything we could want, so we will save the money towards our tuition said Diana. She went on to say that; “We both thought we just

The two girls then spent-

days down the back of Dr. McNally’s lab, even while other classes in progress, “It was great fun. They were nicknamed the worm girls because they were just sat in the back of the class, and I’d be teaching first years, second years and sixth years. The rest of the classes had great fun going down to the back of the class and looking at what they were doing down there.” Renuka’s project is also really something to marvel at, she identified a biomarker that could indicate whether or not a cancer is going to spread. She focused her study on oesophageal cancer. “Renuka, was runner up individual and ever since second year, has had an interest in the Young Scientist. She was always knocking on my door with some great idea, so she’s been doing it over the years” said Dr. McNally. She went on to tell us that

apart from the Young Scientist, Renuka has another very exciting project going on for her at the moment which stemmed from last year’s Young Scientist competi-

tion. “Last year we had an entry from Renuka for which she won first in her category. She did a project where she looked at the effect of garlic on cancer cells. Now though, she’s actually in the process of publishing that at the moment in a medical journal, which is really excellent for her. She’s always been very academic and since last year’s competition she’s been working on this

years one. Which means that she’s actually been working on this project for the last 18 months.” Then there was Khadija Gull and Emily Tierney. They entered with a project on Bio-informatics. The science teacher told us that, “Emily had done her work experience in bioinformatics and Khadija is another girl who enters science competitions almost compulsively, she’s done it a few times, so between the two of them they decided they were going to focus on that area of science, and so they made contact with Alex Eustace in the Royal College of Surgeons. So they did very well too, they came

first in their category and they also got the Health Research Board prize.” Both Renuka’s project and the one done by Khadija and Emily relied heavily on computer work and a knowledge of various different computer programmes,

Khadija Gull

“The great thing about their work is the computer element to it. There is a thing called Big Data where, because there is so much cancer information on line, almost anyone can become a research scientist and they can process that information using different software. So I’m very lucky with those three girls being so interested in the computation side of science, as it is becoming a really big deal within the industry.” It wasn’t all just computer screens and lab work. The project presented by Maria Wyzykowska sought to find out the effects of exercise on the brain. She focused her study on the fact that it has been proven that short periods of intense work

in the Young Scientist annually for the last seven years, since Dr. McNally began working there. “7 years ago I came to the school , and I have a doctorate in genetics from Trinity, so when i came to the school, while I was obviously interested in the curriculum and making sure the girls got their points, I also wanted to encourage them to do some discovery and

enquiring of their own. To ask questions that we don’t already know the answers to.” The accolades for the school don’t end there however, “We won the Northern Ireland Young Scientist during the summer and one other student won the Intel Award, so we actually have a student going to Arizona in May and I’m going with her to the International Science and

Engineering Fair, so we’re going to have a very busy year.” Brimming with pride for her students Dr. McNally concluded by saying; “I

would just like to say that we are lucky that we have such great management and I am very grateful that they are so supportive.”

Maria wanted to find out if the short intense work-outs did as much for the brain as longer periods of exercise does. “Maria was looking at whether or not it’s as good for your mind. Does it have as good cognitive effects and does it affect academic performance?” It wasn’t just the students that excelled in the competition, the school itself won the highly sought after award of Best School: “We got the best school, which is just amazing, it often goes down to Cork or Kinsale, so we were just so thrilled, because there are schools of such a high calibre out there that we have so much respect for, so for us to win it we were so thrilled. Where Now For The EU? Open Europe will host the second of their series of “War Games”. This is how the EU Reform and Brexit negotiations might play out. A panel of high profile players drawn from across Europe will simulate the British negotiations with the EU on the question of “Stay or Go”. The panel will comprise two former Prime Ministers, nine former ministers and one former European Commissioner. With each player taking the role of a country, Ireland’s own John Bruton is one of the team. Each of the participants has operated at the highest level of politics, both in their home countries and in the EU. Each of the participants will role play how they believe their country will act in these final weeks of the renegotiations. The event is staged in London; the tickets are all sold out but the negotiations which go on for the entire day will be streamed live on Open Europe’s

website from 9AM on January 25th 2016. Follow live #EUwargames. The leader of the Dutch Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, says that if Britons vote to leave the EU, the EU will untangle, which he hopes for. He says once a country the size of the UK opts out then other countries will follow. It appears that many across almost all member states hold much the same view and wait in anticipation of launching vigorous campaigns to leave the EU. So these negotiations are not just about facilitating the UK agenda but rather they are about ensuring that the Union going forward is one that accommodates the best interests of all European citizens. Merkel has certainly got her hands full following on the Cologne sex attacks and robberies. The former head of the German constitutional court says her actions on migration amount to glaring

By Cathal Boland policy failures. He joins many others of the German establishment in criticism of the Chancellor. Some are now calling for Merkel to reinstate border controls and suspend the policy of free movement as they say the policy is now impaired. The EU Home Affairs and Migration Commissioner confirmed that only 272 of the projected 160,000 refugees have so far been benefited under the EU agreed relocation scheme. So a revision of the policy must be on the cards. A new year, same problems, the question for the British people is: stay or go. The question for the leaders of Europe is: will solutions to the many problems they face be delivered during 2016?

With Christmas Day now out of the way and the New Year here. when the bitter weather wreaks its relentless havoc on our homes. It’s also a time when all the bills

taking and many people, particularly the elderly, are forced to cut back on potentially life saving heat because of high costs. Fortunately here in the North County, we have

more bearable when your home is a cosy haven.

Boilers Boilers are essential for staying those

mornings. It’s also rarely possible to dry clothes outdoors at this end of the year, so the boiler plays an all important role. It is an everyday necessity and even from a safety point

Carpets Carpets are an undervalued source of heat for the home, in that they retain heat well in their fibres. They are also non slippery, which is safer, especially at a time when wet footwear is expected and puddles form. There is little less comforting, than feet on a cold floor, so at the very least you could always lay out a rug or two. There is a great range of carpets and rugs available at your local retail park or your shopping centre, as well as local carpet fitters offering their services at competitive prices.

Curtains seem to come at once, even though it would admittedly be tight enough simply dedicating any spare pennies after all those Christmas extras. Heating our homes is an expensive under-

a range of top quality options to choose from, in our efforts to stay warm and healthy. Nobody likes to hear that winter is well established, but making the transition to the big chill is much

comforting extra few minutes in the shower, putting your jumper on the radiator to make it extra warm and cosy before leaving the house, and for heating the house through on those bitterly cold

of view it’s imperative to make sure it’s in the best condition, or whether it may even need a replacement. Also, your pipes may well freeze, as well as the water, which can lead to burst pipes and a rather tall bill. Therefore, it is worth calling in the plumber earlier rather than later to check everything is in working order and to put some preventative measures in place. Now is therefore the opportune time to book it in for a service. Make a call to your local plumber today, so you don’t regret it later.

It may well be worth investing in some heavy duty curtains. They won’t take much time to hang and they’re great for keeping heat in, and will continue to be useful in the Summer months for keeping out light from the early sunrises. So, be it patterned or plain, brightly coloured or more subtle, you’ll have no trouble at all picking up the perfect pair for your home here in the North County .

sure you keep draughts out too by ensuring that there are no cracks in your windows and doors and certainly don’t leave them open for any length of time.

Keep The Damp At Bay Do you often see patches of damp in your home? A great item to purchase is a dehumidifier. It effectively absorbs the moisture in the air, causing a noticeable reduction in the effects of damp. These will be readily available in many local department stores, supermarkets and specialist shops. Also, if you tend to suffer from a leaky roof more at this time of year, make sure it gets sorted before it ends up causing longer lasting disrepair. Call your local handyman without delay and get the problem resolved to save long term costs.

Garden Sheds / Furniture It’s fairly unlikely you will want to be spending much time out in the garden over the coming weeks and months, so it is therefore very advisable to protect what can be

protected. Sheds are often used for storage of a remarkable assortment of articles, most of which would rejoice at the chance of some type of covering. A thick plastic sheet or two should be protection enough for the change in season. The same applies in the

case of garden furniture, however a closer fit is more imperative as they’re much more exposed to the elements. Your local garden centre or a wellequipped outdoors shop on your closest main street are likely to be your best bet for those necessary extras.

Intreo Offices Opened In Swords And Balbriggan Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton officially opened two new Intreo Centres in Swords and Balbriggan on Wednesday, 6th January last, bringing to 58 the number of Intreo Centres nationwide. The Intreo Centre in Swords will offer a “One Stop Shop” service to Department of Social Protection customers living in Swords, Donabate, Portrane, Oldtown, Rolestown, Ballyboughal and parts of Kinsealy and Waterside. Residents living in Balbriggan, Rush, Lusk, Skerries as well as Gormanston and Stamullen will be serviced from the Intreo Centre located at Gallen’s Mill in Balbriggan. Speaking at the opening of the latest Intreo Centres, the Tánaiste said that her focus was on transforming the Local Offices of the Department of Social Protection into Intreo Centres or dedicated public employment services: “The Department of Social Protection was traditionally seen as the place where a person got their unemployment or dole if they were out of work, and nothing more. I was determined to change that. Through the Pathways to Work strategy, my focus has been on transforming the local offices of the Department into centres which offer dedicated employment services and concentrate on helping jobseekers to upskill and gain training and ultimately a job.” “Equally, Intreo has introduced a new link between the Department of Social Protection and employers. Officials in the job activation area of the Department work closely with local employers in sourcing staff for vacancies in their businesses.” The Tánaiste acknowledged the work of the staff working in Swords and Balbriggan. “I wish to acknowledge the work of the staff working in Swords and Balbriggan who, under the stewardship of Siobhán Lawlor, Divisional Manager for North County Dublin provide a sterling service on behalf of the Department. I wish you continued success in your work,” she said.

O’Brien Slams Lacklustre Housing Crisis Solution Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin Fingal Senator Darragh O’Brien has criticised the Government for not tackling the housing crisis and accused them of once again placing spin above substance. The party’s Dublin spokesperson pointed out that Fine Gael and Labour have launched their housing policy several times, but have yet to deliver any units on the ground. The problem is particularly acute in Fingal where there are over 9,000 households on the housing list, but only two social houses were built between 2011 and 2014. “Family homelessness is at crisis levels. According to Freedom of Information replies, the waiting times on the social housing

lists from each local authority reveal that most social housing applicants have been on the list for fewer than five years with most on the list between two to three years – when the current Government was in power” said O’Brien.

“After four years of slashing investment in homes this Government is now reliant on fantasy figures to try to overcome a crisis of its own creation. In contrast Fianna Fáil has a plan to spend €4.5bn to build 45,000 units by 2021” he said.

He went on to say “Overall there are over 9,000 households on the social housing waiting list in Fingal County Council (3 per cent total Households; approximately 9 per cent of total population), this represents a massive 47 per cent increase in the waiting list since 2013. Based on an average household size of three this means there are about 25,700 persons on the waiting list. He concluded by slamming the Government further by saying that “With this inaction, the government is attempting to use the destitution and homelessness of families (those unable to afford rent due to inadequate supplement levels) as a means of stabilising rents. Rent supplement is meant as an anti-poverty measure, its purpose is not to attempt to regulate the private rental market.”

NEW YEAR - NEW CAR

By Aoife Read and Remember Us are but a few causes helped by the club in the previous year. Here at the County Leader we contacted active member Jacinta Harley to find out her thoughts on what the club is all about; “The big thing about Malahide Lions Club is that it serves not only Malahide but also the surrounding area, and it is part of a bigger group of Lions International, and it’s very recognisable around the world. It’s all set up right the way through to help people. At the moment we have 39 members in Malahide between men and women and we’re currently recruiting and we have recruited four new members over the last three years, and there are two people coming on board shortly with us as well.” Each member of the Lions Club is a volunteer: “All the members are volunteers and give their time completely free and there’s no payment anywhere .That’s something we were asked last Christmas when we were doing the food appeal, there were questions about charity. We were asked are there people being paid, and no, we pay a small fee towards the running of the club but nobody ever gets paid.” She told us that the group meet twice a month in the Grand Hotel and during the meeting they discuss the projects they are going to take on. A person might take on a project to help someone. Recently Jacinta herself

took on a project to raise money for Remember Us, they had a night in the Grand Hotel, and got the Garda band to play, and at the end of the night they had raised €3,000. They do a lot of great work; “On an annual basis we do things like the Christmas food appeal where we go out and everybody knows us there as we always show up for the second or third weekend in December. We were out rocking buckets all around the place and a lot of research goes into who are the needy in the area and beyond and we make sure we give them the money coming up to Christmas particularly towards food. We also feed into a diabetes awareness programme, a spectacle recycling and living with arthritis here in the local area” They also have a lot of annual events, such as their hill walk in Wicklow, a cooking demonstration where they get in a famous chef and recently a steam train outing in Drogheda which was to raise funds for the Drogheda homeless. This is just a small amount of what they do. The Lions Club in Malahide are currently eager to attract some younger members to achieve a greater community reach; “We are very keen to get in younger people. We have a variety of ages but they would be mid thirties upwards and we are very keen to get younger people to join us as well. We have people from all sections and walks of life and its amazing to see what people can bring to the group. So many people have different perspectives on things and that’s really good for the group in general.” If you want to know more about what they do or would be interested in joining the Malahide Lions club please contact them via their website www.malahidelions.com.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY Peter O'Gorman

Recent published deaths from the North County

(Swords) 13th January We sat beside your bedside dad, We knew you could not stay, it broke our hearts to watch you slowly fade away. Not a day passes Dad without thinking of you, but in our hearts you will always stay. Our only consolation you were not alone, Mam took you by your hand and brought you home. Sadly missed by his loving family

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for a very special one (mention request).
