Charitable Malahide Walk Into Light The people of Malahide are generous. From their massive contribution to Daffodil day every year to the Malahide Lions Club, it seems that selflessness comes as second nature to many of the residents of Malahide and the North County.

By Aoife Read ‘Darkness Into Light Malahide’ is an annual walk that takes place in Malahide Castle and Gardens that is in aid of Pieta house. Pieta House are an organisation which provides professional one to one therapeutic services for people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, people who have attempted suicide and people who are engaging in self harm. They do not require a letter of referral from a psychiatrist or a doctor and all of their services are offered free of charge. Speaking to the County Leader, Fiona Letch of Malahide Darkness Into Light said; “We have been in Malahide for 3 years now and last year we had over 5,000 people walking with us. It is so great, people can either run or walk it and we start at 4.15 am. It is such a worthy cause, Pieta House provide vital support for people who are experiencing difficulty and they don’t require that you be referred by your doctor or have to go through the usual procedures so they do a very good service.” She went on to say; “It costs about €1,000 to put a person through the treatment that Pieta House provide so that is why we need to hold fund-raising events like this. Malahide Castle and Gardens are so beautiful and it is a 5 km circuit on the day and every single penny that is raised goes to Pieta House.

There are one other walks happening in North County Dublin, in Skerries. You can still register, pricing and T-shirt collection points are available on the website. Last year we had over 5,000 we really hope that this year we have that again if not many more than that.” She concluded by saying; “We are currently looking for people to volunteer with us too, we need people to hand out T-shirts on the day and act as marshall throughout the trek so if anyone is interested in doing that with us they should contact us at dilmalahide@gmail.com.” According to Pieta House the tragedy of suicide is one that is becoming increasingly prevalent within Irish society. A mental health care system that is under strain, and long wait times to see mental health professionals means that the Continued on page 17

‘Enough Is Enough’ - Jimmy Guerin Independent Councillor from the Malahide area, Jimmy Guerin says the stress of the housing crisis is laying heavily on people’s mental health and last week called for an emergency meeting amongst the local County Councillors, to finally put to bed the housing crisis issues in the North County. Speaking at the monthly County Council meeting, Cllr Guerin said that there have been three suicides in his constituency recently, ranging in ages from 22-53 years of age. Cllr Guerin has said that the weight of stress and pressure on individuals who are caught up in homelessness, or even at risk of homelessness, is wreaking havoc with their mental health. He went on to say that month after month the County Councillors meet to discuss relevant issues and that housing is always on the agenda. He feels that the time has come to focus on the urgency of this issue and wants a special meeting scheduled to tackle and discuss “nothing more than the housing needs in Fingal.” The issue of housing was, of course, on many of the councillors’ agendas at this months meeting, with Cllr. Guerin many of them raising the personal issues of their local constituents. It was noted by many that there has been a significant change of trends with the homeless population and that there has been an increase in elderly pensioners and retired people who are either homeless or facing homelessness. Sinn Féin Councillor, Paul Donnelly told of a local man of 75 years of age who has been on the housing list for over 1 year and who has been told it will likely take anywhere from 6-8 years for him to be given a home. This man is currently facing homelessness with no idea of when he will be re-housed. Cllr Donnelly feels this type of new homelessness needs to be looked at as part of the housing strategy. While speaking with Anti Austerity Alliance Cllr. Matthew Waine, who feels very strongly on the issue of homelessness, he had proposed that a plan needed to be put in place for emergency accommodation, as the figures in this area have risen since January. According to these figures, the number of homeless in the Fingal area has dropped from 204 to 159 but the number of people in emergency accommodation has risen from 150 to 181. This shows that there is a need for a long term strategy around the emergency accommodation situation and that emergency accommodation in itself, is not solving the homelessness issues. The Local Authority said that the Age Friendly Alliance who are working with a housing subcommittee, will have reports completed next month which will shed more light into the development of age friendly housing in relation to homelessness and our older citizens. It was also stated that the County Council are treating the homeless issues as a top priority and that they are utilising all mechanisms and funding available to them, but that ultimately they are awaiting further plans in this area from the Government.

It has been a great few weeks for girls sports teams at Malahide Community School recently. First up, the school’s 1st year girls basketball team won the Dublin A League on Tuesday 5th April. The match was played in the Oblate Hall where they beat Loreto Foxrock by 34-13. Second to get a taste for victory were the 2nd year Hockey team. They won their Dublin Minor League match just before the Easter holidays. Speaking to the County Leader, Deputy Principal, JeanMarie Ward said; “ With the basketball the girls played fantastically well and never lost their heads. Congratulations should go to their coach too, Fiona Daly. The same goes for the Hockey team. The girls played brilliantly and we are all so proud of them. They did themselves and the school proud.” This is part of a growing pattern of

sporting success for the local school. Their Senior Rugby team beat Tallaght Community School in the Senior Development Shield Quarter Final in March and one 6th year and one 1st year student, Niamh Corry and Seanie Dalton competed in the All

The flag was carried into the school hall by a 6th year student, Seamus Szyling who is also a member of the Irish Defence Forces. The entire student body of over 1200 students were in the school sports hall to witness the event which concluded with the school singing Amhran na bhFhiann. local community. The concert weaved together the story of the Easter Rising through song, dance and historical narration. The concert included songs such as ‘The Rising of the Moon’, ‘The Fields of Athenry’, ‘The Parting Glass’ and ‘The Foggy Dew’, to name a few. The show, directed by Ms. Ruth Brown and produced by Ms. Emma-Kate Cummings, had a cast of students from first year to sixth year. Seven male students portrayed the seven signatories of the Proclamation and four female students represented some of the prominent women involved, whose roles in the Rising had been written out of history for the best part of a century. The music was provided by a talented collection of school musicians and led

a four person team from five different clubs in a ‘round robin’ competition where each club competed both at home and away. This resulted in a total of 8 matches being played by each club. The competing clubs were; Clontarf, Greystones, Ballybrack and Malahide. As Clontarf and Malahide drew on 12 points each, it was down to shots, and with Malahide scoring 174 shots to Clontarf’s 160, Malahide were the clear winners on the day. It was a tremendous and well won victory for the team especially as it coincided with the anniversary of the club.

by Mr. Pat Duff. The incredible costumes were provided by Paul’s Costume Shop, Blessington Street in Dublin. The cast created a rousing and emotional performance, using the well known ballads and music of that time to tell the story of this important historical event. The show was a great success and has led to requests from the local community to perform it again. A second evening performance will take place in May. Tickets will be available from the school office. All photographs were taken by Mr. Keith Coady. A number of other events took place in Malahide Community School to mark the 1916 centenary including an exhibition by the Dublin Volunteers, a debating competition, a screening of the film ‘A Terrible Beauty’ and an audience with Joe Duffy about the children of 1916. It was a fantastic week of events in Malahide CS which will live long in the memories of both students and staff who were involved.

Malahide Boys Trips To UK It was a great day recently for a select few Malahide boys when the Malahide United U12 Premier DDSL team were invited across to Ipswich Town to play the boys in the Academy Team. The team travelled to Ipswich on the 8th of April and played the Academy on Saturday 9th, the team put on a magnificent display and despite being beaten proudly represented Malahide United and the DDSL league. The

03

boys got a great surprise when Irish legend and Ipswich Town Manager, Mick McCarthy took time out of his busy schedule to meet and talk with the lads from the team chatting with them, posing for photographs and offering them tips and advice for a career in soccer. Ipswich Town is considered one of the top academies in the UK with many former professionals looking after the kids at all age groups.

The hospitality shown to the lads from Malahide was exceptional and it was an experience that they’ll never forget. Malahide United u12 are one of the top teams in the Premier DDSl league and hold trials every July, which anyone is welcome to come along and try out for. Meanwhile the U11’s team were kicking up a storm elswhere in the UK when they enjoyed a great trip to Wales, Stoke and Manchester. On Friday they played a really competitive game against a good academy side and came

out 4-2 victors. The Malahide lads played some excellent free flowing football and were a real credit to themselves and the club. On Saturday they took in Old Trafford in the morning and then Stoke V Swansea in the afternoon. The Malahide players were the flag bearers for the Stoke game which they thoroughly enjoyed. It was a great experience for them to be on a premier league pitch. The lads were impeccably behaved and were brilliant ambassadors for Malahide United.

Catwalk To Kabwe Charity Night A charity dinner was held at Indie Spice Grill in Swords last Wednesday. The charity dinner was held in aid of Zamda Ireland and was hosted by model, Madeline Mulqueen, who was joined by models, Teodora Sutra and Irma Mali in cooking up a storm in the Indie Spice kitchen. Madeline was a volunteer and part of the Catwalk to Kabwe crew who shot a documentary in Kabwe, Zambia recently to highlight the great humanitarian work of Zamda, which works to improve the plight of the street children of Kabwe. Speaking about the experience, she said, “The trip to Kabwe had a huge impact on me. Pat Fanning, who runs the charity, showed us his immense warmth, generosity and strength in making the lives of the children of Kabwe infinitely better, which really inspired me.” “As for the children, not a day goes by that I don’t think of them. They have changed my life in more ways than they know,” she said. Guests at the charity dinner enjoyed a three-course gourmet meal, a complimentary Kabwe Cocktail on arrival and live music by singer, Patricia Roe plus incredible raffle prizes on the night. All money raised will go towards building a new block in the Sables School run by the Irish charity.

Need For Public Toilets In Malahide Teodora Sutra, Madeline Mulqueen, Siobhan O'Connor and Irma Mali

Local councillor, Anthony Lavin (FG) has been pushing for the Council to commit to opening the long completed public toilets at Robswall Park, Malahide. These toilets have been complete for a long time and have not been used by the public at all, as yet. Many local residents have approached the councillor to find out when they will in fact be opened, as they feel that it is

19.04.2016

something that is severely lacking in the locality. The use of a public toilet would be something that many locals feel is necessary, while using the park. The Council responded by saying, “It is acknowledged that there is a need to have the toilets at Robswall opened at least on a seasonal basis. They are currently shut due to staff resources. A re-examination of

the issue is underway and members will kept informed.” Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Lavin said; “It is an issue to me to see infrastructure there for anything and for it not to be used. Hopefully with the summer months approaching it will be opened as it is something that is needed for the area and will especially be needed during the summer time. I am happy that the Council have said that they will re-examine the issue, however I won’t be fully happy until I see something actually done about opening them to the public.”

Balbriggan Golf Club turned Pink on Tuesday, 5th April as it held its second Open Pink day event in aid of Breast Cancer Research Institute (BCRI). The event was organised by Barbara Kenny and she was delighted with the turnout on the day, as the time sheet was completely full and the weather was beautiful. The ladies all looked fabulous in pink and there were some very stylish men who also looked dashing in pink. The format on the day was an Open Scramble consisting of teams of 3 men and 3 ladies. A special guest was renowned lady golfer, Mary McKenna MBE, representing Breast Cancer Research Institute. Mary, always very generous with her time, chatted to all the members as they came into the clubhouse. She also met some of the Junior Club members, including the two Juvenile Captains, Tommy

Brian Finnegan and John Mc Cluskey. The winners of the ladies competition were Evelyn Whelan, Sinead Walsh and Lyndsey Staunton. A fundraising raffle was held on the night and Balbriggan GC would like to thank everyone who sponsored raffle prizes and everyone who participated on the day and a special thank you to Barbara Kenny and everyone who helped her with the event. Much needed funds were raised for a very needy cause and another great day and night was held at Balbriggan Golf Club.

Reese Kilbride, a young 12 year old pupil of St Helen’s SNS, in Portmarnock, got a shock when he opened the post last week. It contained a letter addressed to him from Queen Elizabeth II, in response to a letter sent by him asking that she should return the six counties of Northern Ireland back to the Republic. Reese spoke to the County Leader about why he sent the letter in the first place. “We were learning about the history of 1916 and I decided to send the letter when I discovered that Britain had the six counties and Reese Kilbride when they were handing over the country, they didn’t hand it all over.” “I thought the Queen would be able to do that, but I realised that it would be the decision of ministers. I wrote the letter in December, but it wasn’t posted until February. I thought no more about it until it arrived last week. I was really delighted that she took the time to read my letter and to reply to ,” he said. The letter stated that, “While it was thoughtful of you to let the Queen know of your views, I must explain that it is not a matter in which Her Majesty would intervene.” The Queen also thanked Reese for the pictures he drew especially for her. When asked what reaction he got from his family and school friends, Reese said, “Everyone was hysterical and laughing and congratulating me.” Principal. Mary O’Leary was justifiably proud of Reese, when she said, “It is incredible that Reese would go to the trouble of writing to the Queen and that she, a busy lady, would take the time to reply to him. We’re astounded. He’s a great young lad and he’s a credit to his family and it’s a privilege to have him in the school,” she said.

1916 Commemorative Day In Garristown The County Council launched its 1916 Commemorative Day last Friday with the unveiling of its new public art commission Mobile Monuments. The Commemorative Day will take place on 24th April in Swords Main Street and Town Park and will feature a state ceremonial event with the raising of the flag and the reading of the Proclamation, followed by a parade and additional family events culminating in a fireworks display. This flagship event is part of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme to honour the contribution made by the men and women of Fingal to the events of 1916. The Mobile Monuments, a series of sculptures built on three rickshaw tricycles, arrived to Main Street, Garristown, where the public were treated to a special performance devised by artists Rhona Byrne and Yvonne McGuinness with the students of Swords Educate Together, St. Mary’s National School, Garristown, and St. Catherine’s National School, Rush. As Fingal County Council’s Centenary Public Art Commission these artworks have the capacity to fold out and transform into colourful sites for performance and gathering when they arrive at their destinations. The Mobile Monuments were created in collaboration with a number of local senior and school groups and explore the various themes associated with the activities and the collective thinking

Indeed it can be argued that the Tidy Towns competition is the pinnacle of community co-operation and pride in their areas. Local businesses always play a huge role in deciding the outcome, as the key indicators of the cleanliness of any town, is how well business premises are maintained. BROWNE On Saturday, 2nd April last, Loughshinny and Rush Historical Society unveiled a plaque in Kenure Cemetery, in memory of three local men who fought for Irish freedom 1916. The plaque is in memory of Thomas McEvoy, Joseph Mackey and Thomas Doyle, who took part in the fight for Irish freedom, and was unveiled by County Mayor, Cllr. David O’Connor, as part of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme. The three Irish Volunteers were commemorated with the unveiling of a plaque, in what was a very poignant and moving ceremony, which was attended by relatives of the men, many of whom travelled long distances to be there. The inclement weather did not deter the large gathering, who assembled in the graveyard to commemorate the three local heroes. A wreath was then laid on each of the three graves by relatives of the men. In advance of the unveiling ceremony, the Fingal Brigade Old IRA Commemorative Society paraded the short distance from Rush Athletic Club Hall to Kenure graveyard, led by a Piper and Colour Party. Following the ceremony, there was by a reading of the Proclamation and performances of the Last Post and the National Anthem. Members of the public were then invited to view an impressive display of 1916 weapons and memorabilia by Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers Commemorative Society in the Rush Athletic Club Hall. Pictured after the plaque unveiling ceremony, which took place at Kenure graveyard, Rush in honour of three local volunteers who fought for Irish freedom in 1916, are surviving children of one of the men, Thomas McEvoy. Speaking at the launch of the Commemorative Day, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “Today we have experienced the energy Mobile Monuments can bring to our towns, an ambitious and vibrant commission such as this gives us a taste of what to expect from the Fingal 2016 Commemorative Day. The flagship centenary event in Swords on 24th April 24 is an opportunity for Fingal

County Council to engage with families throughout the county and to re-imagine the activities which led up to 1916. We hope that this event will bring people throughout Fingal and beyond together in remembering those who took part in the 1916 Rising and in commemorating the birth of the Irish State.” For further information on the full Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme visit: www.fingal.ie.

Towns group decided to lump the Dublin region into the Midland and East region. This did not deter the wonderful volunteers of Skerries and the town came tops in the Midland and East region with 321 points, up five points on the previous year. This highly competitive region included outstanding former winners of the competition, Moynalty and Tallanstown. Parliament Supports Proposed EU Passenger Name Records (PNR) Directive In the ongoing fight against terrorism the Parliament agreed to compromise text on the proposal for a PNR Directive which will now go back to the Council of Ministers for formal approval. The Directive is designed for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences and serious crime. It will oblige air carriers to transfer the PNR data on international flights (in and out of the EU) to the Member States of arrival or departure and provision exists for the collection of data of internal flights. Brian Hayes the FG Dublin MEP has been a firm supporter of the proposal and his view is supported by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms. Frances Fitzgerald, T.D. She welcomed the move and said “The proposed EU Directive on PNR will be an important measure in the ongoing f i g h t against terrorism a n d serious crime, and one which Ireland sees as a priority for the Union. The recent terrorist atrocities in Paris and Brussels and the ongoing concern about the threat from foreign fighters emphasise clearly the need for coordinated and targeted action among the Member States of the EU. Enhancing access to relevant information and improving information sharing are essential in this context.” Strict controls must

be put in place to ensure that the information gathered is only used for the purpose for which it is collected. But not to take advantage of the information in enhancing the safety of Europe would appear foolish. The collection of passenger details from internal EU flights must beg the question should the same information not be collected on all cross border movements however made? It seems that such a move would be seen as time consuming and expensive to implement so air traffic is targeted as the easy option. Independent MEP Nessa Childers had pushed for rejection of t h e measures. M s Childers said “We are at once making security promises to our citizens that we are not delivering on, and failing to protect the liberties they entrust us with.I fear we are setting ourselves up for a further encroachment of fundamental rights if these measures prove inadequate in the prevention of future attacks”. She continued “We must be extremely vigilant and not allow measures to be passed under duress due to the heightened security situation

Last year’s Tidy Towns competition saw a new regional format with Dublin as one area, as opposed to four local authority areas. Dublin was included in the Midlands and East region, which means that there are now only four regions, instead of the usual seven regions. Regardless of this new system, our North County towns continue to excel, and this was evident in their scores. The performance of Lusk deserves special mention, as they increased their

points total by six, to 293 and in the process, they were awarded a bronze medal. This is the first time the village has been honoured in this way. This result comes as no surprise given the dedication and hard work of the committee with Secretary Pat Kelly at the helm. Pat is appealing to residents and visitors alike to be conscious of litter around the village and is asking people to dispose of it in a proper way. Lusk is hoping to at least maintain its

bronze medal status and perhaps go one better. It’s all in the hands of the local community to ensure that their own areas are kept in pristine condition, with planting and flowers. As usual, businesses in Lusk have always kept their premises full of colour, with delightful hanging baskets making a big impression. The Raven roundabout is a very impressive first impression for visitors to this historic and delightful village. The nearby town of Rush, located between Skerries to the north and Lusk to the west, has made its way from being known for the smugglers in the 19th century, to a nice place with an award winning community spirit. After the increase of population in the last years, it still has about 8,200 citizens. So this small, seaside town has

In comparison to the big cities, it is easier to go shopping, as there aren’t so many people and even the parking situation is much better. Before the temperature turns and the grass begins to grow, you will want to fertilise your lawn and put out your weed and feed. By doing it now, you will have the maximum effect on preventing weeds and getting your grass off to a great start. Remove old grass, leaves and other debris that may have settled into your lawn over the winter. We want the new growth to sprout as best as possible and old leaves and such can inhibit that growth. Take a rake and clear your lawn so with Spring already here your grass is ready to sprout with great health.

FLOWERS If you take the time to prune your flowering plants now, you can have great results once. Prune your plants to the inside to remove unwanted growth and help the plant bloom. Small shoots can be easily be cut to allow more growth to the larger stalks. Be sure,

however, not to prune plants that flower right away, such as azaleas, because you can cut the flowering buds back and not have all that wonderful colour for Spring.

GARDEN Cool weather vegetable plants are ready to go into the ground now. Whether working from seeds or plants, get them in the ground now to get them going.

The cool weather will provide the growth you need for lettuce, radish and other wonderful vegetables that thrive this time of year. Small scale gardens can be pleasant, relaxing things, not too labour-intensive, not too stressful if we allow them to be. We can set our gardens up to be low maintenance. We can plant wisely to give our crops the best shot at being productive. And, we can do this without doling out loads of money.

Continued from page 1 instances of suicideality, and people experiencing suicidal thoughts is ever increasing. Many local people have been touched by suicide in some way or another. Which is why the existence of the Darkness into Light walk is so important to so many people. It is a testament to the North County’s charitable spirit that four Darkness Into Light events happen in the North County. Speaking to the County Leader, Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), who usually takes part in both the Malahide walk and the Skerries walk said; “I’ve completed it the last two years, not sure about this year yet. It’s a great event, not only as a fund raiser and to raise awareness, but it is also a great comfort to families who can go on the walk to help honour and remember lost loved ones. It really hits home when you see the numbers and especially young families and young children honouring a lost parent or family member. It’s an important outlet in this regard also and please donate if you cannot go on the walk.”

Anyone can register for the event, you can register either as a solo walker or runner or as a group.
