Home Cooking For Malahide Chef Exciting times for Malahide Parish Centre, who are delighted to announce that John Dunne has taken over as operator of the café in their centre, and brings a wealth of experience with him.

John was born and raised in Malahide. He graduated from Cathal Brugha St in 1995 and after extensive travelling and gaining valuable experience abroad he settled down and married a girl from Portmarnock in 2004. His work experi-

ence to date includes managing 12A on New Street ( Now Hush) from 2001 and 2003, and managing Gardenworks Café from 2003 to 2006.

He will be serving Java republic coffee, lots of homemade salads, quiches, lasagnes and lots of home made cakes and treats and all of the food is truly fabulous. I look forward to working with him going forward.”

Malahide Easter In Oz ‘Eggs’travaganza Malahide Castle and Gardens will be holding an Easter trail on 26th March 2016. This year’s event incorporates all the wonders of the magical world of Oz and this is their fourth annual Easter Trail. This year, revellers will be able to follow the Yellow Brick Road through the castle grounds magical botanical gardens. Each explorer will be provided with a map and clues that will help you along the way.

You will also get help from the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion. Children are warned to be cautious though, because there is always the chance that you might just run into the Wicked Witch of the West whilst on your quest.

Once all clues have been collected, you can bring them to the beautiful and clever Glinda, the Good Witch of the North where she awaits you with your Easter surprise.

Inside the castle you will be met by a wonderful wizard who will be performing all sorts of witchcraft and wizardry. His show will run for approximately 45 minutes.

The Easter Trail is a great day out for the whole family. You can choose between the morning event which takes place from 10.30am - 12.30pm or the afternoon one which takes place from 2.30pm 4.30pm. Castlebar Success For Malahide Lawn Tennis Juniors Eight under 12’s and under 14’s from the Malahide Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club made the journey to Mayo on Friday 5th February to take part in the Connacht Junior Indoor Open in the new 4 court bubble in Castlebar, along with director of coaching Jim Watt and a number of parents.

won quite a few matches.

The largest contingent from Malahide was in the U12 Boys with four competitors, all of whom won singles matches and all got as far as the semi finals.

In singles Cian Hurst and James Egan particularly had good wins beating the no 5 and no 7 seeds respectively .

But it was the u12 Boys doubles where Malahide took the tournament by storm with Cian Hurst and

partner reaching the semi finals where they played Greg McKernan and Lorcan Loughrey, who beat the no 2 seeds in the previous round. The match was nip and tuck the whole way before Greg and Lorcan got away early in the 3rd set tie break to win it 10-4 .

Malahide Lions Club Annual Hill Walk The Malahide Lions CLub are holding their annual sponsored Hill Walk on Sunday March 20th. Walkers will depart Malahide on the 10.21 am train from Malahide Station and travel to Greystones where they will walk from Greystones to Bray.

Last year’s Hill Walk was extremely successful. It was in aid of St. Francis Hospice, and took place on March 22nd in the beautiful vale of Glendalough. In response to a brilliant suggestion from Lion President Donal, it was decided to organise two routes, one relatively easy, and a longer walk for the more experienced. This proved popular and a healthy crowd took part on the day.

The weather was beautiful and both walks went off without a hitch. The longer route took the participants on a circuit of the upper lake and along the Spink and those on the shorter route

walked up by Poulanass waterfall to the viewpoint. Afterward the group enjoyed post walk food and drinks in the Glendalough Hotel. A cheque for €7,500 was later presented to the Hospice, €6,000 of which was raised on the day and the balance came from the Vintage Car show.

Anyone interested in walking with the club this year should contact Stephen MacDonagh. Sponsorship cards are now available and the usual sponsorship of €130 applies, however larger amounts will be gratefully accepted.

The club recommends that you should be in good health and used to walking if you are to take part. Wear suitable clothing warm socks and comfortable footwear (boots with ankle support preferably). Take account of the prevailing weather conditions and, if necessary, bring a change of clothing/footwear for the return journey.

Sun block may also be required. Carry a backpack with liquid and a light lunch for one stop.

Local Green Party Councillor, David Healy raised a motion at the recent Howth/Malahide Area Committee meeting regarding the standard of housing in the area. He called for legislation to be put in place to ensure that construction costs and market housing prices give a significant incentive to construction. It is hoped that this will lead to higher standards and will not have a negative impact on supply or affordability.

However a recent ruling from the Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly has meant that certain legislations have had to be implemented making this motion almost defunct.

Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Healy said; “The minister produced these guidelines on apartment standards, and brought in a piece of legislation that had to be implemented which reduced the importance of the motion. It was put in as a general plan that they would balance the standards with the affordability, but my proposal as it was didn’t get voted

Balgriffin Cemetery To Get Extension During the most recent Howth/Malahide area committee meeting, an objective was raised for the proposed extensions

to Balgriffin Cemetery to take place on lands owned by the County Council. The land incorporates approximately 11 acres of land and is located to the east of the existing Balgriffin Cemetery off the R107 Malahide Road.

The proposal would see and allocation of accommodation for approximately 3,619 plots, 400 memorial plots and 770 of columbarium niches.

The sketch plans for the proposal were presented back in June 2015 and it had been agreed upon that the procedure would be initiated. Public notice of the Council’s intention to carry out these works was published

The extension is to include a new public carpark, burial plots, columbarium walls, memorial plots, gathering and reflection areas and all associated site development works such as footpaths, headstone, concrete plinths, seating areas, bin shelters, site landscaping, boundary walls, railings and a working yard. The proposal also includes demolition of existing industrial building and refurbishment/ modifications to an existing toilet/office building.

The cemetery will be accessed from Carrs Lane off the Malahide Road with a new pedestrian ramped access off Malahide Road. It is envisaged that the works will be carried our in stages according to anticipated demand.

Speaking to the County Leader, Stephen Peppard, Senior Executive Officer for Operations, in the Fingal County Council, said: “The existing Fingal cemetery has a limited lifespan left. So the plan is to get the new extension built on a phased basis, the first phase will be completed, hopefully in late 2016. There was a figure suggested in

the report on what the first phase will deliver and then it will be as funding allows and as phasing is required to complete the project.”

He went on to say: “It will provide burial space for the area for the next 30 years.

Once we’ve got the planning process finished we move on to the next phase to get tenders organised and hopefully get construction underway as soon as we can. The intention is is to have the first phase up and running by the end of the year.”

This is great news for the people of the local area as with the ever increasing population of the North County, the ability to bury loved ones close to home is extremely important.

Skerries RNLI Volunteers Walk Red Carpet Volunteer lifeboat crew from three RNLI stations in Dublin were in Dundrum on Wednesday, 17th February for the Irish Gala screening of Disney’s latest action film ‘The Finest Hours’.

Volunteers, Gerry Canning and Eoin Kelly from Skerries RNLI, Manus O’Donnell from Howth RNLI and Paul Cummins and Jack Shanahan from Dun Laoghaire RNLI were invited to swap lifeboats for the limelight as they shared the red carpet with guests at the high-action movie

premiere at Dundrum Town Centre.

The film tells the incredible true story of the heroic 1952 Pendleton rescue mission carried out by the US Coast Guard which is still regarded as one of the greatest sea rescues of all time.

Owing to the long and close relationship that the RNLI holds with the US Coast Guard, it was highly appropriate for Disney and the RNLI to work together in Ireland, while helping to raise awareness of the charity’s lifesaving work.

Speaking following the gala screening, Gerry Canning from Skerries RNLI said: ‘It was great to see such strong parallels between the bravery, selflessness and community spirit shown by the characters in the film which is mirrored by RNLI lifeboat crew all around Ireland.”

North County secondary schools are part of the 15,000 students across Ireland that took part in the GloHealth challenge last year.

The GloHealth School’s Mile Challenge is calling on Dublin pupils to run, jog or walk a manageable one-mile distance in order to promote health and fitness through recreational participation in sport. The Challenge is open to secondary school students of all fitness abilities and can be organised by an individual class or across the entire school. In 2015 an estimated 15,000 pupils all over Ireland took the GloHealth School’s Mile Challenge, which is a joint initiative between Athletics Ireland and the Irish

Schools Athletic Association.

Local parents, teachers and pupils are now being encouraged to support this fantastic initiative in 2016, which can be held during or after school hours on school grounds and is easy to implement.

Every student who takes part has their time recorded and is awarded with a coloured wristband, which represents their one mile completion time. Schools can also arrange a repeat challenge which is often the case, as they aim to improve their times and upgrade their wristbands.

Speaking to the County Leader, Irish Schools Athletic Director Anthony White said “The GloHealth School’s

There was great excitement at Holywell Educate Together National School on Tuesday last, 16th February, when two companies in the school vied for the overall winners title in the Junior Entrepreneur Dragon’s Den session The final two companies included a Customised Picture Frame company and an International Cookbook, both of whom made impressive presentations to the dragons. The winner, which was chosen by the dragons was the international cookbook with recipes from all the cultures across Holywell. The customised Picture Frame team comprised of Ben Comiskey Greene, Catalina Cucereanu and Daisy Donnelly.

Life Changing Career Opportunity For Jobseekers There is a wonderful, life changing opportunity for jobseekers, who are eager to re-enter the jobs scene, with the news that a new training programme for a career in Tourism and Hospitality is about to commence. This opportunity is exclusively for jobseekers who are eligible to qualify.

In order to be eligible to participate in the Momentum Programme, applicants must be on the Live Register for 312 days out of the last 18 months. They must be claiming Jobseekers/Benefit/Allowance or Credits.

They must also be actively seeking work, be over 18 years of age and have an excellent command of both written and oral English. This means you’re eligible for retraining and reactivation programme.

Instead of just doing a course and returning to the live register, there is a programme that is funded nationally by Solas, which is called Momentum.

Siobhan Kinsella, Director of Cpl Institute explained how this programme works. She said, “What this involves is using the

Now 20, he spoke about his experience with the course; “I was on the social welfare for a good few months and I was just looking for something that would get me started working and something that would get me experience. I went looking for something that would get me into hotels and I found the Tourism and Hospitality course.”

He told us that the areas covered by the course were what really attracted him to it; “They had a good few qualifications that I was really interested in, like Customer Service that would help me with a lot of things I want to do in the future.”

He went to say: “It actually really helped me because I got a job in Lidl straightaway after the course, as store assistant, which helped get me experience, which will help me to get future jobs. The course was 3 months training and then a 3 month work placement,” he said.

If this course is for you, then you will be given every support from Cpl to make sure that you get the job you always wanted and to make a real change to your life,” she said.

Learners will gain the theoretical knowledge of Tourism and Hospitality, as well as the practical skills to be a huge addition to a potential employer, all of which is delivered by people with solid industry experience and connections.

Gerard Madden Gerard Madden is one student who successfully completed the Cpl Tourism and Hospitality course. He spoke about what the course has done for him; “I am working in the Maldron Dublin Airport Hotel in the Accommodation Department. I used to work in a hotel years ago, and I found it impossible to get back into it.”

Madden is 35 and from Balbriggan originally however, he now lives in the City Centre. “As soon as I finished the course, I got a job because of it. I had been on the dole before the course for a good few years due to the recession.

I found it very hard to find work,” he said.

He did two successful work placements through CPL before he got his current position. He had been working on building sites before his period of unemployment and was seeking a change when he stumbled upon the course.

He completed the course in 2015 and did a 10 week placement in the job he is currently still in.

Cpl will support them in the work placement and, as a result, many of the work placements become permanent. If this does not happen, then they will get the person an interview to go for a job somewhere else.

“It is important that people must choose the environment they want to work in and they must be chosen by the employer through interview. So far, we have got jobs for 572 people through the Momentum programme, who had been unemployed for more than a year.”

Ms Kinsella continued, “At the moment, we have a course about to open in Swords, which will be based at the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport (formerly Bewley’s) and we have industry trained people ready to train these people. We need people to know that this represents a real opportunity to change your life, to gain an income, to be supported every

“Before the course I had gone to college for a year, I decided college wasn’t for me, classrooms were never my thing, but this was different.

We weren’t in the classroom the whole time, we were actually using our hands and there was a lot of project based work as well,” she said.

Caoimhe is still working for the company where she did her initial work placement; “I am not just working full time I’m working overtime at the moment. I got my placement from the course with Insomnia and I’m still with them now. The placement was 13 weeks and they kept me on at the end of that. I’m officially employed since October.”

She concluded by saying: “The last four months have been amazing, I’ve gone from being just a trainee learning everything, to being a key holder to the premises and being trusted with many other responsibilities. I’m even training in new people now as well, and that is all down to the skills that the course has given me.”

People deciding to go on the course can retain their social welfare benefits for the duration of the course, until they move into employment. What makes this programme different is that it is not just certificates to say you have the skills, or QQI certificates. What’s different about this programme is that you have practical experience in a hotel or hospitality environment. You also have a reference from that employer where two-thirds of those work placements tend to go permanent in that environment. For those that don’t get permanent positions, Cpl will keep working with that person until they get a job opportunity.

Training is carried out by Cpl tutors in the Clayton Hotel. The course will include a three week induction, followed by a 10week Specific Skills Directed Training.

Then follows a 10-week Work Placement.

There will be an extra four weeks Work Placement for under 25s.

The entire course will be for a duration of 23 weeks for over 25s and 27 weeks for under 25s. While in training in the Clayton Hotel, there will be industry trainers there for the appropriate skills required.

Ms Kinsella continued, “We spend three weeks working on the person and what they’ve gone through before we start teaching them specific skills training, where their confidence is restored. Even after the skills training is finished, we bring them back every two weeks to monitor their progress.”

“Skills on this programme include health and safety, manual handling, food hygiene, customer service and communications, as well as all the practical skills.

The course begins on 29th February and it is vital that anybody interested in completing this course should visit their Intreo Office immediately, and ask to go on the Cpl Hospitality and Tourism course, as soon as possible, as spaces are limited,” she said.

Lusk Post Office, which was previously located at Costcutters in the village, opened its new premises to its many customers at Casey’s SuperValu just before Christmas, but the official opening was delayed until last Friday.

Postmistress, Linda Neary is very conscious of the role that her customers play in supporting her and her two staff, Bridget Teeling and Donna Blessing. She also acknowledges the part that post offices play in the local community, and Lusk Post Office is a prime example of this.

It was a very proud occasion for pupils of St Cronan’s National School, Swords last week when the Sacrament of Confirmation took place on Thursday and Friday of last week at St Cronan’s Church, Brackenstown, Swords. The celebration coincided with the Jubilee Year of Mercy at St Cronan’s Parish.

The excited pupils, parents and teachers of St Cronan’s National School all enjoyed the great occasion, with beautiful weather conditions on Thursday. Friday’s weather was less favourable, but it did not dampen the spirits of pupils or their families and friends.

provided beautiful music, which was appreciated by all. The Thursday ceremony was conducted by Father Paul Thornton, who acknowledged the participation of pupils, teachers and parents in helping to make the occasion a very special one for all.

Friday’s Confirmation was administered by Monsignor Dan O’Connor, aided by Father Paul. A proud school principal, Ms Loreto Desmond was present to welcome the pupils after their Confirmations, as well as teachers.

Afterwards, pupils and their families were provided with tea, coffee and biscuits in the school hall, which was welcomed by all.

Fingal LEO co-ordinates and presents the largest number of participants every year. Now in its fifteenth year, a record number of 2,600 students from 24 secondary schools and 7 primary schools in Fingal are competing.

The County Winners at Senior level will go on an educational trip to El Prat, Barcelona as part of their prize. El Prat is twinned with Fingal.

Category Winners will advance to the National Final to be held in Croke Park, on April 20th.

The ‘National Student

Enterprise Awards’ competition, annually sees over 17,000 students compete on the national stage.

Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal held a Movie Benefit Gala Night at Movies@Swords in the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords on Thursday last, 18th February. The chosen film was ‘Spotlight’ which was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning investigation into child sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston. The evening was to raise funds for two charities, namely Remember Us Special Needs Support Group, which is based in Balbriggan and are currently seeking funding for a new base in the town and Chimteka Children Support, which is dedicated to changing the lives of children in Malawi.

Rotary Club President, Michael Kennedy welcomed the gathering and introduced well-known film critic, Michael O’Doherty who gave a very favourable review of the film, saying that it should have been nominated for Oscar glory, such was its powerful portrayal of such a poignant subject.

The event, which was attended by a large group of Rotarians and their friends, who enjoyed a pre show drinks reception and the film, whilst harrowing, was one that had the audience captivated with its exposure of abuse over three decades.

Elections, Referendum and Election Funds Lots of different issues faced those attending the EU Summit meeting last week in Brussels.

The big issue was of course the UK’s renegotiations of its terms of membership of the EU. There is little doubt but that Cameron will get a package which he can claim as a victory.

This along with the support of the Labour Party will see the UK vote next June to remain part of the EU. But the migrant issue was the first hot potato which they had to deal with. Merkel, who has shown such leadership, is finding it hard to gather committed followers from amongst her fellow heads of government. It is important for her that other countries commit to her vision. If she is left isolated in Europe she will face real difficulties at home. It was expected that the Government in Ukraine would lose the recent no confidence vote and that this would result in the resignation of Yatsenyuk the PM. Some political moves saw a number of MPs abstain allowing the Government win.

Engineers Week, the annual campaign to inspire the next generation of engineers and excite students about the possibilities a career in engineering can offer, will kick-off in Dublin on Sunday, February 28th, running until Saturday, March 5th. The week-long series of activities across the country including in the North County, now in its 10th year, is held annually to promote engineering as a career and highlight the importance of the profession to Ireland.

Engineers Week will involve over 500 events nationwide including school visits, engineering shows, industry open days with 200 engineering organisations in the private and public sector, and will engage over 37,500 participants including primary and postprimary students, parents, teachers and volunteer engineers.

People can also organise their own events by availing of resources on the Engineers Week website, including workshop ideas, quizzes, trails and other activity suggestions suitable for primary and post-primary children.

‘New Road A Waste Of Resources’ - Healy An objective was raised at the most recent Fingal Development Plan meeting by local councillor, David Healy (GP), to delete the proposal for a new road being built alongside the Mayne River in Malahide.

He sees the proposal as it stands as a gross waste of resources and feels that there are other options to make the area more accessible that simply haven’t been explored sufficiently.

goes under the bridge. While I accept something needs to be done, what I think they should be doing is widening the existing road, widening the path under the railway.”

He went on to say; “There are only two houses on one side of the road and both have lots of space in front of them. On the other side of the road there is a road reservation in front of the halting site which is at Mayne River Park. The reservation space was supposed to be left to allow for widening of the road but instead the road engineers have come up with a plan to

build a separate road, parallel to it up on the ridge of the hill.”

“The main reason for this alternative plan seems to be that they don’t want to have to deal with Irish Rail. They would have to link up with them to some extent in order to have the road go under the railway, so they are going to go up over the hill instead and it seems to be a massive waste of resources,” he added.

He concluded by saying: “They resisted my motion to have the proposal removed at the meeting but I am going to return to it in the next area committee meeting. I just feel like it is a waste of money and they are powering ahead with a plan that seems not to be based on much analysis.”

FF Committed To Retention Of Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance Service Local General Election candidate, Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) says his party will retain the Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance service.

The Malahide based candidate commented to the County Leader; “There has been a lot of speculation in recent months about the HSE and National Ambulance Service taking over the Senator O’Brien current ambulance provision from Dublin Fire Brigade. I want to state categorically that Fianna Fáil has no plans to discontinue the involvement of Dublin Fire Brigade in the provision of ambulance services in the capital.” He went on to say “I and my Fianna Fáil colleagues in all 4 local authorities in Dublin have worked closely with members of the Dublin Fire Brigade over the past number of years. We are proud of the crews that serve the people of Dublin 365 days a year, sometimes in the most difficult of circumstances.”

Senator O’Brien concluded by saying; “In Seanad Eireann, as Dublin Spokesperson I have continually opposed any unilateral change to the Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance service and will continue to do so. The Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance is a crucial front line service in our city and county. We will never support any change that is not fully endorsed by the Dublin Fire Brigade personnel themselves”.
