Malahide Forest Adventure Area Axed

A proposal to have a Forest Adventure Area developed on Malahide Castle Demesne has been rejected by local councillors by 5 votes to 3 in a recent area committee meeting. The proposed facility was to provide children and adults with an opportunity to climb into and move between the canopies of large mature trees in the woodland in a safe and enjoyable way. The facility was to be designed in a sustainable way to avoid damage to the woodland and will take advantage of existing

infrastructure in the park including changing rooms, paths and car parking areas. It was also proposed that a Multi-use Reinforced Grass Area adjacent to the existing Bridgefield Car Park on the North Eastern side of the Demesne be developed. This facility would have taken up approximately 5 hectares and would have been situated close to the main car park.

controversy amongst both local residents and public representatives. Speaking to the County Leader, local resident Noel Mahon, who formed a Facebook page to protest against this proposal, said; “As a local resident and a man who has grown up in Malahide I felt it would have been a shame to see the

Castle changed in this way.” He went on to claim; “I am not against maintenance and upgrading of the area but this proposal would have taken up 5 hectares of the Castle grounds and would inevitably be something that would need to be paid for. I started a facebook page to gather people together and let them

know what is happening. We had over 10,000 hits on the page. Most of the people I know from Malahide just didn’t want this.” The original proposal was put forward by the Parks Department of the County Council. According to the publicly available Council Document ‘Planning and

Development Acts, 2000 – 2015 Part 8 of the Planning and D e v e l o p m e n t Regulations 20012015: Proposed Forest Adventure Area and Multi-Use Reinforced Grassed Area In Malahide Demesne’, they were seeking “expressions of interest from suitably experienced operators to assist with the design, development and management of the facility.” This suggested that it would be developed by a private company. This sparked concern amongst locals and councillors that this would mean Contd. on Page 3

Malahide Community School End Of Year Malahide Community School are busy at the moment with the run up to the Summer Holidays. In sports they had Vicky Young (2nd year, MCS) and Cian Daly (3rd year, MCS) who recently played on the Irish u15 basketball teams . Both played international matches against Scotland. Their TY Graduation ceremony was held on Tuesday 24th May. It was a really enjoyable event and showcased the

fantastic TY programme in Malahide Community School with students telling parents about the different modules available in TY such as: Chinese cultural studies, Work Experience, Filmmaking, School-link, IT support team to name a few. There was also presentations made to 18 students in recognition of their very high Junior Cert results. 150 students are now spending their last week of

Speaking to the County Leader about this Sharon O’Sullivan, Manager of the Malahide Parish Pastoral Centre said; “The centre is up for the public choice award so people have to vote for it. So we are trying to get people to vote for us, we want to win. We think that would be fabulous.” She went on to say; “The RIAI send out a

The procedure sought approval before a design had been decided upon. According to the County Council’s Law Agent, Helen O’Neill it was; “In non-observance of legislative code which rendered it amenable to judicial review.” Local Councillor, Cian O’Callaghan, who had been in correspondence with many local residents who were objecting to

Malahide Parish Centre Could Be Peoples Choice The Malahide Parish Pastoral Centre has been nominated for the Public Choice awards in the RIAI architecture awards. the idea said; “There was considerable concern in the community in Malahide about proposals by Fingal County Council to provide a forest adventure area that would be run on a commercial basis.” “I am glad that this proposal; has been rejected. There has already been substantial investment and improvements made to Malahide Castle over the last number of years. However it is important that the local community is fully involved in deciding about the future direction of this wonderful amenity that is enjoyed by local residents, visitors and tourists. There is a balance to be struck between commercial activities available at a fee which generate income for the upkeep of Malahide Castle and free and open access for members of the public.” Also speaking to the County Leader, Local Green Party Councillor David Healy said; “In principle I think a canopy walk or similar somewhere in Malahide Demesne could be an excellent proposal. However it would depend on the design and details of the proposal including its environmental impact and its impact on park users. I am glad that this proposal has been rejected by the Council.”

Other works will include the refurbishment of the separate outbuilding to accommodate a small cafe and sanitary facilities. Investigation Needed Into Rising Insurance Costs Fine Gael TD for the North County, Alan Farrell, has said that an investigation into the insurance industry is urgently needed, citing the increase in insurance costs, particularly in the motor industry. Speaking to the County Leader, Farrell said; “The CSO’s Consumer Price Index figures for April 2016 have shown that, over the year from April 2015, there has been a 34.2 per cent increase in the cost of car insurance, a 9.9 per cent rise in insurance related to the dwelling and a 3.2 per cent increase in the cost of insurance related to health.” “Given the significant rise in these premiums, and the impact that is having on the

Call On Government To Negotiate On CF Drug Fianna Fáil TD Darragh O’Brien has responded to the government decision to reject funding for the cystic fibrosis drug Orkambi. Deputy O’Brien, who has been campaigning for the drug to be approved since October 2015 said, “I am bitterly disappointed to learn that the Minister for Darragh O’Brien TD Health has rejected the introduction of the drug. Speaking to the County Leader, O’Brien said; “This drug was approved by the EU Medicines Agency some time ago and has proven to be of major benefit for cystic fibrosis sufferers. Furthermore, it has been shown to extend life expectancy and significantly improve quality of life for those who suffer from the disease.” “More people are living with cystic fibrosis than ever before. About 500 people with CF have the potential to benefit from the implementation of Orkambi in Ireland,” he added. O’Brien is now calling on the Government to clarify if it will enter into further negotiations and has called on Vertex pharmaceuticals to significantly reduce the price of Orkambi as part of these negotiations. “Cystic fibrosis is a very debilitating condition and anything that can be brought forward to improve people’s quality of life and extend life expectancy should be made available immediately. Ireland has the highest prevalence of CF in the world and therefore every effort must be made to have this drug put on shelves in pharmacies nationwide,” concluded O’Brien.

There was great news recently for local small business Invizbox Ltd. from Skerries when the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’ Connor T.D., announced that they have reached the National Enterprise Awards Final on June 9th. Thousands of small businesses from across the country were supported by Local Enterprise Offices in the Local Authorities Network last year and 32 of those businesses have now reached the National Final. The nominee for Local Enterprise Office Fingal is Skerries company InvizBox Ltd. Established just last year, Invizbox Ltd. specialise in secure digital services and have developed innovative “plug and play” devices which allow you to secure your privacy on the internet by simply connecting any of your personal devices to the InvizBox over WiFi. They remove the complexity of trying to secure yourself and your data. The competition has a prize fund of €40,000 and was set up two decades ago to celebrate Ireland’s small businesses and micro-enterprises. Representatives from Local Enterprise Office Fingal and Fingal County Council will be supporting the local finalists at the Aviva Stadium in June, and the company is headed up by Paul Canavan. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise in Fingal paid tribute to the local small business community, saying: “Small businesses, sole traders and start-ups are becoming the heroes of the economic recovery here locally and we want to celebrate their successes and talents. The Local Enterprise Offices, through the Local Authorities Network, support thousands of small businesses in the community every year and the National Enterprise Awards recognise their remarkable achievements.” Twelve awards will be presented on the night including eight new regional trophies and the overall winner will receive €10,000 to invest in their business. Paul Reid Chief Executive Fingal County Council commenting on the nomination said: “I am delighted that Invizbox has been nominated for the National Enterprise Awards Final. As Chair of the Local Government Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Committee, I recognise that start-ups are the life blood of the economy and essential to job creation and I am very pleased that they get this recognition. I wish Invizbox and Paul Canavan the very best of luck at the National Enterprise Awards Final on June 9th.”

Friday 13th May last was far from unlucky for the pupils from Scoil Phadraic na Cailini, Donabate, as they gathered at St Patrick’s Church in Donabate to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation. It was a wonderful day, with beautiful weather adding to the great occasion. The lovely ceremony was conducted by Monsignor Dan O’Connor. who was ably assisted by Father Joe Connolly, Parish Priest of Donabate. The choir provided the music and they performed excellent singing which was enjoyed by all present. Fr Joe thanked the parents, teachers and Parish Council for the great work they put in, ensuring that everything went like clockwork. He also thanked the principal of the school and all the teachers and parents for preparing the children for this unforgettable day in their lives. The gorgeous singing of the choir and the music all added to the solemnity of the occasion. Monsignor Dan also offered to pose for photographs afterwards, which was much appreciated by all.

Poignant Play Staged In River Valley A play about suicide, which was dedicated to the memory of a Swords man, was held at River Valley Community Centre last Wednesday. ‘Bring Me Home Alive’ is a play about awareness of suicide and it played to good sized audience, which included representatives of suicide awareness groups from around Swords. The play was written by Patricia McCann and is all about raising awareness of suicide and was dedicated to the memory of Stephen Murray, a 30 year-old man from River Valley, who tragically lost his life to suicide last year.

Locals, Brian McWeeney, Des Foley. Donna McDonald and Patrick Carroll put in extraordinary work to make sure that the play was staged in River Valley and were delighted to see their hard work coming to fruition. Patrick Carroll told the County Leader, “I was on the Comino de Santiago walk and I met Patricia on the walk. We got talking about things and the subject of suicide came up. I was telling her about my friend, Stephen who committed suicide last year and that his anniversary was coming up. Patricia said that she had written a play about suicide and that I asked her if she

would bring the play to Swords and dedicate it to Stephen. A few friends got on board. This play has been all around Ireland and has been very well received by all. It’s a roller coaster of emotions, with sadness tinged with humour, said Patrick. Stephen’s family attended the performance and his mother, Karen told the County Leader, “I know it’s going to be a very emotional night and from what I’ve heard it’s a wonderful play. I spoke to Patricia who wrote the play and she said it was a very healing play, which is a great source of consolation for the whole family, she said.

Reinstate Guidance Counsellors In Schools The National Student Executive of the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU) expresses their concern following reports that in over half of second-level schools nationwide, 1 in 6 are using unqualified guidance counsellors. Particularly of concern is the drop in guidance counselling hours being offered in public schools versus the slight increase in fee-paying schools since 2012. Guidance counselling is an essential service for all students and

should not be limited or withheld due to students’ socio-economic background or their ability to pay for such a service. However, the National Student Executive also welcomes the pledge from the newly formed government to reinstate guidance counselling hours to all schools. It is vital that teachers assigned to these posts have the relevant experience and qualifications to fulfill their roles so that students receive the adequate support and advice they need. They are advocating for the re-introduction of guidance counsellors to all second-level schools.

Pictured are local business people and stakeholders at the Purple Flag meeting that was held at Swords Castle on Thursday last. The attendees included, Gillian Naughton (Carnegie Court Hotel), Allen Harrington (Carnegie Court Hotel), Darren Crampton (Movies@Swords), Sean Fitzmaurice (North County Leader), Ian Hunter (Pavilions Shopping Centre), Tony Lambert (CEO Fingal Dublin Chamber), Toni Hogan (Fingal County Council), Sgt Terri Ferguson (Swords Gardai), Brian Geoghegan (Applegreen, Swords), Brian Cooney (Directions Research Group), Claire Kelly (Directions Research Group), Coilin O'Reilly (Fingal County Council), Cllr Joe Newman, Cllr Paul Mulville, Michelle Albericci (Movies@Swords)

Primary school pupils from Balbriggan Educate Together N.S, Moylaragh were among pupils from 10 other schools, who will take part in the national final of the Our World Irish Aid Awards 2016 in The Printworks, Dublin Castle, on Tuesday, 14th June.

The awards seek to help children in Ireland understand global development issues. The Our World Irish Aid Awards invited pupils across Ireland to create projects, in any medium, about the lives of children in developing countries. The projects

highlighted the challenges facing these children and their families and the progress which is being achieved by Ireland and other countries through the global effort to fight poverty. All schools competing in the national final will be

presented with a trophy recognising their outstanding efforts, with one school being announced as overall winners, taking home the overall ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ trophy. The ‘One World, One Future’ theme of the 2016

New Laws For Lobster And Crab Fishing Under new legislation any member of the public, fishing for lobster and crab can only fish from 1st May to 30th September and are limited in the number of pots they can fish. The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA), the independent statutory body responsible for enforcing the State’s sea-fisheries and seafood safety laws, is prioritising the implementation of the new regulations during its seasonal programme of in-shore patrols, which began this month. The new regulations were introduced to protect the licensed fishing industry which has faced increasing competition in recent years from unlicensed or unregistered vessels that were operating on a commercial or semi-commercial basis. Under the new regulations, recreational or private fishers can fish up to six pots, and can retain five crabs and one lobster daily. Furthermore they may not store crabs or lobsters at sea or sell or offer for sale any of their catches. Previously there was no limit on the number of pots recreational or private fishers could fish or the times of the year when lobster or crab fishing could take place. Speaking to the County Leader, Susan Steele, Chair, Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority said: “Fishing for lobster and crab is especially popular in the summer months. Members of the public can

continue to enjoy their own catch as the regulations provide a daily allowance that is sufficient for personal consumption. The new regulations are designed to restrict commercial fishing to licensed operators. This will help to ensure the viability of the industry and also guarantee the traceability of the product, which is vitally important from a food safety and public health perspective. She added; “Working in conjunction with the Naval Service, our seasonal inshore patrols will cover all inshore coastal areas including small local piers and harbours to detect and deter illegal fishing and illegal operators. We are committed to supporting the safe and sustainable management of these fisheries to help safeguard their future for the coastal communities who rely on them for their livelihood. The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority’s inshore patrols will continue until November. They are being undertaken with the support of the Naval Service, Air Corps and Inland Fisheries Ireland. In addition to targeting unregistered or unlicensed vessels fishing on a commercial basis, they will also monitor and inspect licensed operators to ensure their compliance with gear and catch size regulations and their management and handling of v-notched lobsters.

awards asks pupils to imagine how they would like their world to look in 2030, and to learn about the new United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development which seek to address the root causes of poverty and environmental damage worldwide. At the national final, 5th class pupils from Balbriggan Educate Together N.S along with their teacher Cecelia Gavigan will exhibit their project ‘The Global Goals Game’. Over 1,000 primary schools throughout Ireland have been participating in the Our World Irish Aid Awards in 2016.

The exhibition aims to remember and celebrate the 40 years of LGBT activism that helped reshape Ireland and culminated in last year’s Marriage Equality referendum when Ireland became the first country in the world to vote in Marriage Equality by popular public vote. Speaking to the County Leader, Noelle Moore, one of the organisers of the exhibition said; “It was a group of us who got together and many of us have done stuff with LGBT activism before. We were thinking that post referendum, one year on, we should do something to mark it. But we didn’t want to just talk about marriage because for a lot of us it wasn’t just about marriage it was much bigger than that.” “I have a history background myself and we have a thing called the Irish Queer Archives which is stored in boxes in the National Library, but nothing was

being done with them. You can go in and look at the boxes but they are not properly referenced or anything. So basically it is just loads of material relevant to our community just sitting in boxes. So what we decided to do was take some of the pictures from over the last 40 years and make a small exhibition, which we called the Road To Equality, and that would be a taster really of what is in the archives,” said Noelle. She went on to say; “The exhibition will go around the country and at each county they can add a stand, so each area can add their own county’s history of LGBT. There are 12 pull-ups or stands at the moment and we hope to add to that. There are pull-ups on various things like Lesbian history, and Trans rights and other things that maybe everyone wouldn’t be fully familiar with.” She concluded by saying; “The tag line of the exhibition is ‘Its our history, share it’. We really want as many people to come along and see it as is possible. So if you come along and see it, tell your friends, share it on social media etc.”

Council App Wins National Competition Fingal County Council’s “Unfolding News Story” App has won a prestigious competition held by ESRI Ireland. The App, available on Google Play and the AppStore, is all about connecting with customers to update them on all of the latest news in relation to Water Disruptions, Road Closures, Severe Weather, Floods, Latest Planning Applications and Community Events. This service is accessible to customers on the Council website and on mobile devices. It is also presented in the interactive digital Atrium of County Hall in Swords on large multiple touchscreens. At any time, the content is relevant for the current week. The team in Fingal worked with PinPoint Alerts to create an application using ESRI cloud technology, ArcGIS Online, StoryMaps and AppStudio for ArcGIS. Speaking to the County Leader. Paul Reid, Chief Executive, Fingal County Council said: “This is a tremendous achievement by our Project Management Team and one we are very proud of because it is an excellent example of how we at Fingal County Council are utilising technology for the benefit of the citizens of Fingal.” County Mayor, David O’Connor said:

Burglars know every potential hiding place yet despite this, 35 per cent of homeowners have left a key hidden in the garden. It sounds obvious but lock your doors! Over 50 per cent of attempted burglaries are through the front and back doors. Make sure that all doors are locked and

“I would like to congratulate the Project Management Team on behalf of all the Council members on their success. It is well deserved because we have seen at first-hand how useful this App is and how it can help the people of Fingal.” Claire McIntyre of the Project Management Team said: “This was team effort from myself, Hazel Farley and Brendan Cunningham of Pinpoint Alerts and we are delighted to have won this prestigious competition. The App is one of several we have developed and all have been devised to make things easier for people to interact with Fingal County Council.” The local authority. have been invited to attend the International ESRI User Conference in San Diego, California in June, where the Fingal Unfolding News App will be showcased in front of 16,000 international delegates. There has been lots of excitement generated around the highly innovative use of this App and its power as an engaging communication tool for businesses and for the Citizen. Commenting on the entry, Eamonn Doyle, CTO, ESRI Ireland noted “this dynamic element really interested me as is quite a contrast to the static content one normally sees in Story Maps. This approach is really innovative and has a lot of potential for other organisations where news and events are geographically distributed”. The team are currently considering other uses of the App, particularly its use as a tool in the area of tourism promotion in Fingal, highlighting the county as a fantastic place to visit.

attending primary school, I am well aware of the challenges facing families all year round, but now there is an added financial pressure. School tours are a brilliant treat for the children, and usually a mix of education and fun however the stark reality is that there is a large number of families faced with the decision of paying the average €20 per child for the school tour, or putting food on the table.” “The cost of the Leaving Certificate (including Leaving Certificate Applied) is €116, whereas the Junior Certificate is €109, with the average cost of grinds being €30 per hour. For a family with one child sitting the Junior Certificate and one sitting the Leaving that is

a foundation cost of €225, before grinds are even taken into consideration, not to mention the cost of daily lunches and school buses etc,” he added. Cllr Quinn concluded by saying; “Recently I raised the issue of the rising cost of motor insurance with my colleague Deputy Louise O’Reilly , which again is a contributing factor to the pressures felt by families and all sections of society alike. This is something the Irish Government; in particular the new Minister for Education and Skills, must tackle as a matter of priority. It will be a very short time before schools will return, which will bring the additional pressures associated with new uniforms, School Books and school contributions.”

Rising School Costs Should Be A Priority Sinn Fein Cllr Malachy Quinn has expressed concern at the rising cost of living endured by North County families in recent years and the impact it is having on families with children of school going age. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Quinn said; “Ireland’s cost of living has increased at an astounding rate in recent years and a survey from the European Commission in December 2015 found that the cost of living in Ireland is the sixth-highest in Europe. Although everyone is affected, families with children of school going age are feeling the pinch, particularly in relation to school tours and exam fees.” He went on to say; “As a father of 3 children under 8 , two of which are

Important Changes For Irish Heart Foundation’s National Help line There are some important developments taking place at the Irish Heart Foundation’s National Heart & Stroke Help line. Firstly, the number for the service is changing and the Help line will also now be free of charge from land lines or mobiles, anywhere in the country. The new number is Freephone 1800 25 25 50. Secondly, the service will have extended daily opening hours and evening opening,

with the Help line now open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and on Thursday evenings until 7pm. Thirdly, they will be providing additional avenues to communicate with the Help line, with a new dedicated direct access email helpline@irishheart.ie and they also intend to launch an online Nurse Live Chat service later in the year. The helpline is staffed by specialist nurses and so readers can be assured of

expert one-to-one advice and support, in full confidence. It is important to recognise that these developments would not be possible without the generous backing of Life Pharmacy, and this support is gratefully acknowledged. Every day, approximately 300 new cases of heart disease and stroke are diagnosed in Ireland. Sadly, on average, 27 people lose their lives. Almost two thirds of middle aged and older adults have two of the big three risk factors for heart disease and stroke—high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. Almost all have at least one.

Proud To Have Served You For 2 Years and Continuing To Be Your Voice On Fingal County Council It’s just over two years since 40 County Councillors were elected to the newly expanded County Council in the local elections. A total of 25 councillors were elected to the three Local Electoral Areas in the North County, namely, Balbriggan, Swords and Howth/Malahide. The local election generated great excitement at the time and signalled a change in the local government agenda. It also resulted in a group of imaginative, creative and interesting people, in the main working

on your behalf. It was the first time that Balbriggan had no town councillors, due to its abolition by then Environment Minister, Phil Hogan. The County Leader decided to check in the the present crop of councillors to find out how they are progressing, what they have achieved in the past two years, and what their aspirations are for the remainder of their term in office. The results are interesting and the electorate can now have a birds’ eye of their progress.

Cllr. Darragh

BUTLER

As a party we remain committed to doing all that we can at Dáil Éireann and at Council level to tackle the homeless crises. With regard to Dublin Airport, whilst delighted to support increased job opportunities for Fingal, we are working with communities impacted by the new North Runway. Locally it is great to see such fantastic progress being made with Swords Castle, a long time objective of mine. As part of a proposed Master Plan for the Ward River Valley Park, we will support the provision of increased sporting and recreational facilities on both sides of the valley. Great recreational and tourism projects are underway all across North County Dublin including a public park and walk-ways (and incredible views) at Balleally, the proposed Donabate to Malahide railway estuary crossing and increased cycle and walk-ways. As always, we will keep up the fight for Metro North and improved transport solutions and improved rural broadband. Thank you for your continued support.

A Greater Focus On Mental Health Deputy Alan Farrell called for a greater focus on mental health in terms of frontline and infrastructural support, education and the promotion of enhanced awareness in every community in the North County, and across the country. Speaking in Dáil Éireann, Deputy Farrell called for the stigma, which is unfortunately still associated with mental health, to be addressed urgently. Farrell stated “If we are overweight, we

exercise and if we need to improve our knowledge, we study. However, when it comes to the most important muscle in our body, we do not exercise it. We do not speak about it and we are not really given the opportunity to be heard and yet that can often be the antidote to depression.” “It is important for us to recognise the importance of being able to talk and be heard and to ensure that the State provides

a service which can cater to all of those in need of support, whether through resources and physical buildings or the personnel to support the general public.” continued Farrell. He concluded by saying; “Education has a particularly

important role is disassociating mental health and depression from the taboo status which it has had for too long in our society. However, this must be complemented by actions to increase the awareness of mental health in every local community in Dublin Fingal, and across the country.”

BRIAN DENNEHY

Most projects I have lobbied for such as the Rush Sewage Network, the Coastal cycle/walk path, new sports facilities, new playgrounds for Balbriggan, Naul, Rush, Lusk, bus transport network in the Rural villages, Rush Garda Station are all at various stages. I continue to battle for varied projects throughout the Balbriggan Ward be it parking issues in Balbriggan, Rush or Naul to road resurfacing in Lusk, Rush or Garristown, I have raised and looked for resolutions to issues on behalf of constituents. The high points of being on the Council are without doubt seeing issues raised being rectified by the Council subsequent to me raising them. The low points are the rapid growth in the homeless numbers and the rapidly growing housing needs list as well as the awful situation of the restricted bathing notices slapped on the Rush Beach’s last Summer. To those who have to date supported me I sincerely thank them and I look forward to working for and with them during the remaining three years.

Your Elected Representatives

Special Report

Proud To Have Served You For 2 Years and Continuing To Be Your Voice On Fingal County Council

Cllr. Malachy Quinn “Coming up to almost 2 and a half years since first being elected to represent the people of Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Garristown & Rural North Fingal, on an election promise of working for a Fairer Fingal, myself & my party colleagues have reduced the Local Property Tax by the 15% allowed by legislation, lead the campaign in the abolishment of water charges as well as championed investment in local amenities like Playgrounds, a Skateboard Park & community facilities. Still the biggest challenge facing myself is finding solutions to the housing & homelessness crisis, as part of the Housing SPC on Fingal County Council, I am continuously working to provide solutions. The current permissions granted for over 200 Council homes and with over 9,000 people on the housing list means that there is a lot more work to be done. As a Father of three children under 8 years old, I understand the challenges met by families in Fingal on a daily basis & will continue to work for a Fairer Fingal.”

Cllr. TONY MURPHY

I have worked very hard creating as much opportunity for local economic and social improvement in the area. The first thing I did upon being elected was to set up a direct line of communication with the County Council, since the dissolution of the Town Council. I encouraged the County Council to set up a liaison committee that is made up of people from community organisations and businesses alike, to discuss the challenges that are impacting on Balbriggan. I also set up the Tourism committee as this would lead to a change in the economic environment, leading Balbriggan to becoming a tourism destination over the long term. I was also instrumental in postponing modular housing from going ahead in Balbriggan. I support amenities like playgrounds, Skate parks, and funding for clubs and organisations i.e. Rugby club, cricket club, Brass and Reed band and Men’s shed. Also 7 companies setting up business on serviced sites in Stephentown Balbriggan.

I have been to the forefront of the rejuvenation of Swords Castle and Main Street. This was one of the main issues of residents during my election campaign and I will support and hope to see this project completed by the end of this term. I have been very active in calling for facilities to be put in place for disabled people and those with special needs. Another project that is close to my heart is the delivery of a theatre to Swords, Keeping Property Tax as low as possible is also one of my aims and providing positive outcomes for our residents.”

Eugene supported local residents in their fight against savage rent increases and has campaigned for real rent controls. Eugene is also a supporter of animal rights and has campaigned against the use of animals for entertainment and against the export of Irish greyhounds to China. Cllr Coppinger has also been critical of the lack of school places for children starting school and has called for the Council to be more critical when granting planning permission for houses when there are insufficient services. The EU and Mexico will commence trade negotiations in the next few weeks. This is part of the EU’s ongoing engagement with world markets designed to liberalise international markets. Of course such an accommodation is a two way street. Concessions are expected from the EU by the other party to these trade agreements. Currently the negotiators of CETA the trade deal with Canada have completed their work and the agreement awaits the formal approval of the EU Parliament. The big one and the most controversial is TTIP the agreement with the EU and the US. There are suggestions that this agreement will be concluded by the end of the year. The issues are complex and it seems that both sets of negotiators are running short on tolerance. An end of year conclusion seems to be

extremely optimistic. The Stop TTIP campaign is growing and that growth is partly fuelled by the level of secrecy demanded it seems by the American side. Extreme limited access is permitted to our elected representatives to the relevant papers and such secrecy only serves to fuel the negative lobby. National leaders have begun to express doubts as to the acceptability of the TTIP deal as currently understood. This along with calls not to rush the process seem certain to ensure that no deal will be signed within the term of the current American President. The fear on both sides is that the whole basis of the deal may alter depending on the outcome of the US Presidential election, if agreement is not concluded during Obama’s term. Phil Hogan has come in for criticism by the US

Ambassador who it seems has claimed By Cathal Boland that Hogan has made a “series of misleading statements”. The Ambassador also complains over lack of progress in the negotiations. The Commission has hit back claiming that the EU has not seen substantial progress in important areas such as agriculture. Commission insiders suggest that currently the US approach seems to be all one way. The Stop TTIP movement will see this as total justification of their position and encourage them in increasing their efforts to stop the ratification of CETA and then halt the TTIP negotiations. Juncker is expected to have TTIP on the agenda at the next Heads of Government Summit. He will press for a restatement of a united approach to allow his team to push for an early positive conclusion of the negotiations before the process becomes unmanageable.

Nursing Home Week

2016

Over the past number of years, the ‘Nursing Home’ model has changed exponentially. Gone are the days of hospital like establishments with regimented rules and regulations administered to residents. These days, nursing homes are more like hotels where seniors enjoy much of the privacy and choice they would experience if they were still living in their own homes. Residents’ needs and preferences come first; facilities operations’ are shaped by this awareness. To this end, nursing home residents are given greater control over their daily lives. For instance, in terms of meal times or bed times, and front-line workers, the nursing aides responsible for dayto-day care are given greater autonomy to care for residents. In addition, the physical and organisational structure of facilities is made less institutional. Large, hospital like units with long, wide corridors are transformed into smaller facilities where small groups of residents are cared for by a consistent team. We

have progressed beyond many of the old nursing homes stereotypes that were widely held by members of the public. Now they are bright, comfortable friendly places to live, and are closer to assisted living facilities, than the tradi-

tional idea of a nursing home. As many of the residents in a nursing home will have critical injuries, serious illnesses or require after care from surgeries, most nursing homes will have skilled nurses and aides on hand 24 hours a day. If you are looking for a nursing home, you can ask your doctor’s office or any care staff for some recommendations. Once you know

what choices you have, it’s a good idea to consider what is important to you, nursing care, meals, physical therapy, a religious connection, hospice care, or Special Care Units for dementia patients. Do you want a place close to family and

friends so they can easily visit? Check with healthcare providers about which nursing homes they feel provide good care. Use their suggestions to make a list of homes that offer the types of services you want. Get in touch with each place on your list. Ask questions about how many people live there and what it costs. Find out about waiting lists. Make plans to meet

with the director and the nursing director. Most Nursing Homes will be more than happy to accommodate visits and will welcome any questions and queries you might have, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. The issue of resident choice is of fundamental importance in respect of nursing home care and is enshrined within Fair Deal. Persons assessed as requiring nursing home care have the right to choose where they can avail of the dedicated health and social care that nursing homes provide. The decision to move to a nursing home is a life changing decision and a hugely positive one. Staff in nursing homes are conscious of the significance of such a decision and will guide and assist you as you/your relative/your friend will go about making this significant decision. Next week is National Nursing Homes Week from Monday 13th June to Sunday 19th June 2016 and it aims to celebrate the positivity of nursing home care.

With the gorgeous warm summer weather we are experiencing, with temperatures well into the 20s, everyone’s spirits have been lifted. The smell of barbeques in the evening air is everywhere, as people are out enjoying the glorious weather. With the warm evenings, and the days even warmer, you may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more summer friendly. It is possible to change the look of your home on the outside and inside, just a small budget. Businesses here in the North County have some great summer offers on to give you the best bargains, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. Keep an eye out for some great bargains to make your home and garden into a place that reflects our favourite season.

LIVING ROOM The living room is the most frequented area in the house, where we chill out and listen to music, watch TV or entertain our friends. It should be the most vibrant, lively room in the house. Decorate it with colourful ornaments adding a summery pop of colour. Candles are key to making houses feel like a home. Buy or replace some candles with some subtly sweet ones, similar to summer fruits. There’s nothing more relaxing and homely, than a candlelit room and subtle lighting. Colourful candles are in vogue at the moment and they are a great way to add colour, and comfort also. However, be sure to balance out the colour carefully, with the theme of your house. If it is prominently traditional, pastel coloured candles and ornaments

A LICK OF PAINT We all underestimate the power of painting and the transformation it can make to our homes. A lick of paint can give your house a whole new, fresh look. Perhaps you just want to add another coat to the current colour, or go for a new look and change it completely. Now that the summers here, it’s all about the light colours. Maybe a nice versatile colour for all seasons would suit, like pastel colours.

GARDEN A well kept garden reflects just how well your house is tended. After all, the garden is the first thing visitors see when they come to your home. Gardens are high maintenance at this time of year, so we need to get them summer friendly. Freshen it up by simply pulling out a few weeds from the paving and flower beds. Gardening is a good excuse to spend some time out in the sun.

Delays And New Requirements In Passport Applications Deputy Darragh O’Brien is advising people who are due to travel abroad on holidays over the summer to check their passports as it’s currently taking up to 6 weeks to process new applications. He also warned new applicants to be aware that they need a public services card

to obtain a passport. Speaking to the County Leader O’Brien said; “I raised these issues with Minister Flanagan in the Dáil this week, telling him about the anxiety that can be caused to people who have spent significant money on travelling abroad who then find that they cannot travel.”

07.06.2016

“I’ve been informed that the Passport Office is currently experiencing extraordinary demand for its services. There is a high number of Irish people that are expected to travel to Euro 2016 in France, the Olympics in Rio and this is coupled with an increase in demand for travel abroad,” said Deputy O’Brien. Deputy O’Brien made the comments after the Department of Foreign Affairs and

Trade confirmed that 68,281 passport applications are being processed by the Passport Office, this is up over 13 per cent on last year and nearly 14 per cent of all applications are currently behind schedule. “It would be terrible for any fans that spent great sums of money on travelling to France to support the boys in green in Euro 2016 to be unable to attend the tournament due to having an expired passport,” he said.

Fine Gael TD for the North County, Alan Farrell, is reminding families that the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will be made available again this year, and urged families who are not automatically entitled to make an application before the August deadline. The support provided through the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance helps parents to help with the cost of the new school year. The Department of Social Protection has allocated €38.8 million for the payments this year. Alan Farrell TD reminded families who do not automatically receive the allowance that they can still make an application before the August deadline. In 2015 over 153,000 families with 281,000 children benefited from the payments. The payment rate is €100 for each child aged 4 to 11 and €200 for children aged 12 to 22. As in previous years, a large proportion of Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance payments will be fully automated and no application form will be required.

Letters will issue in the week ending 10th June informing families of their entitlement and notifying them of the expected payment which will be made

during the week ending 15th July. Further payments will be made for applications submitted to the Department of Social Protection.
