Brave young Jack McGuinness Daly is pictured as he gets ready for his first day at school
BALBRIGGAN FOOD FESTIVAL
Many of our readers will be familiar with the story of brave little Jack McGuinness Daly. His story was featured about three years ago on a weekly basis in North County Leader for over a year and captured the hearts of people in the North County. Baby Jack, as he was known then, has happily become Master Jack, as he started school for the first time recently. This wonderful milestone in Jack’s life was achieved when he attended Our Lady, Queen of Ireland school in Toberburr, Rivermeade. His aunt, Samantha Daly told the County Leader, “We never thought we would see this day. He was due to start school on September 1st, but he was back in Crumlin Hospital and he could not start until 16th September, but he is now doing really well. Jack still attends Crumlin on a weekly basis for blood tests, and is also flying back to Great Ormond Street hospital in London for check ups,” said Samantha. Jack was born with a heart disease known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. The brave little trooper had undergone two open heart surgeries in the early months of his life and there was real concern over his chances of surviving this disease. He spent the first two years of his life in Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin as he awaited a heart transplant. Around this time, the County
By Patrick Finnegan Leader decided to highlight the plight of the plucky baby and the result was that fundraisers were organised in every corner of the North County and beyond. He was also featured on radio and TV shows, which further heightened awareness of his condition. The events ranged from quiz nights to head shaves and body hair waxing among others. He spent his second birthday and Christmas in hospital and among his visitors were Hollywood star, Colin Farrell and also Ronan Keating. The end result was that baby Jack was able to have a heart transplant in Great Ormond Street hospital in London in April 2008. The people of the North County really took Jack to their hearts and were terrific in their response to his plight, which, thankfully has had such a happy outcome as him being able to attend school for the first time. Samantha said that Jack, who will be five in December has adjusted really well in school. “The teachers are delighted with his progress. He was very excited about starting school, as he can see the school from his house and wanted to start with the other kids,” she said. He has to attend Great Ormond Street hospital on October 20th for two nights. At a time when we are bombarded by depressing news, it is indeed a delight to be in a position to report on such a joyous occasion.
