Top Of The Class

Brave young Jack McGuinness Daly is pictured as he gets ready for his first day at school

BALBRIGGAN FOOD FESTIVAL

Many of our readers will be familiar with the story of brave little Jack McGuinness Daly. His story was featured about three years ago on a weekly basis in North County Leader for over a year and captured the hearts of people in the North County. Baby Jack, as he was known then, has happily become Master Jack, as he started school for the first time recently. This wonderful milestone in Jack’s life was achieved when he attended Our Lady, Queen of Ireland school in Toberburr, Rivermeade. His aunt, Samantha Daly told the County Leader, “We never thought we would see this day. He was due to start school on September 1st, but he was back in Crumlin Hospital and he could not start until 16th September, but he is now doing really well. Jack still attends Crumlin on a weekly basis for blood tests, and is also flying back to Great Ormond Street hospital in London for check ups,” said Samantha. Jack was born with a heart disease known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. The brave little trooper had undergone two open heart surgeries in the early months of his life and there was real concern over his chances of surviving this disease. He spent the first two years of his life in Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin as he awaited a heart transplant. Around this time, the County

By Patrick Finnegan Leader decided to highlight the plight of the plucky baby and the result was that fundraisers were organised in every corner of the North County and beyond. He was also featured on radio and TV shows, which further heightened awareness of his condition. The events ranged from quiz nights to head shaves and body hair waxing among others. He spent his second birthday and Christmas in hospital and among his visitors were Hollywood star, Colin Farrell and also Ronan Keating. The end result was that baby Jack was able to have a heart transplant in Great Ormond Street hospital in London in April 2008. The people of the North County really took Jack to their hearts and were terrific in their response to his plight, which, thankfully has had such a happy outcome as him being able to attend school for the first time. Samantha said that Jack, who will be five in December has adjusted really well in school. “The teachers are delighted with his progress. He was very excited about starting school, as he can see the school from his house and wanted to start with the other kids,” she said. He has to attend Great Ormond Street hospital on October 20th for two nights. At a time when we are bombarded by depressing news, it is indeed a delight to be in a position to report on such a joyous occasion.

Thomas Ashe Exhibition Touched Many Hearts In Lusk The story of Thomas Ashe’s life and death was told in the Lusk Community Council Thomas Ashe Life and Times Exhibition in the Saint Macullin’s Centre which ended on Saturday 26th September last. Special visitors to the exhibition on 25th September 2010 included two descendants of the Ashe family, Prof. Joseph Walshe of Dublin and Patricia Healy who travelled from Sligo to

visit the exhibition. The exhibition touched the hearts of many families from Lusk and surrounding areas who connected with the historic changes that Lusk and Ireland underwent at the turn of the century. The small village of Corduff was gaining a new national school and teacher, Thomas Ashe. The young Ashe was to become a dynamic force in the community, in the GAA, setting up Black

The 1916 Rising and its success at the Battle of Ashbourne displayed Ashe’s talents as a military leader. Skerries residents will be given the opportunity to become ‘energy-smart’ by attending a free Home Energy Saving Information evening on Thursday, 7th October in the Little Theatre (beside Skerries Community Centre) at 7:30pm. The information evening is being organised by Codema with the support of Sustainable Skerries. Codema is a not-for-profit sustainable energy agency which acts as energy adviser to the four local authorities in Dublin and is completely independent of all contractors. Therefore, its only interest is in looking out for the local community. Residents will be given an insight into the current energy standards of Dublin homes and they will also receive expert, independent advice on saving energy around the home. Homeowners who are interested in improving their homes’ energy performance will also learn about the benefits of joining an Energy Smart Community and getting work carried out as a cluster. The Energy Smart Community is a scheme which allows homeowners to join together to improve the energy-efficiency of their homes at a lower price than going it alone. It works on the simple principle that by bringing homeowners together in a cluster, they can save on the cost and hassle of carrying out energy-efficiency improvements through a group tender process.

Portrane Lady Left Isolated By Council Decision A truly bizarre case of ‘Political Correctness Gone Mad’ has afflicted the council officials and

By Patrick Finnegan elected members recently. The council in their perceived ‘wisdom’ have decided to isolate a Portrane resident by changing her address. Mary Brennan of Nether Cross, Burrow Road has had her address changed to Valley Lane. Mary and her son, Darren are the only residents here for the last 36 years. Valleys would normally suggest the nearby presence of mountains, but unless there has been very recent glacial activity on the peninsula, mountains are in short supply here. Perhaps the council were influenced by the nearby mounds created by Ballealy landfill at Rogerstown, which is clearly visible from the area. Mary told the County Leader, “It was called Brennan’s Lane years ago, although the official name was Nether Cross since 1870. I told the council that I love the name of my address and I can’t see why people who don’t live here have the right to change the name, especially when its against my expressed wishes, a furious Mary said. The whole affair has caused her nothing but anxiety and grief, but she intends to get the council to reverse this daft decision. She has tried

in vain to contact them about changing their minds without success up to now. The County Leader contacted local Labour Party councillor, Gerry McGuire who said, “The naming committee carried out a survey last May to change the name and everyone agreed, except Mary. Incidentally she is not the only resident of Nether Cross, as other people live further down the lane. He continued, “The reason for the change of address is to facilitate the emergency services and to put proper signage on the laneways. In the event of an emergency, the services would not know where to go. The name Valley Lane appears on Ordnance Survey maps and historians are adamant that this name was

Alan McAdam, also known as ‘Sal’ is a well known local window cleaner in Malahide. Unfortunately, Sal, a father of two young children suffered a terrible accident and sustained very serious injuries. He is unable to work and is undergoing rehabilitation. A social evening

has been organised for Sal in The Island View Hotel, Oscar Taylors from 8pm on Friday, 15th October, with live music, food and a raffle. All donations for this very worthwhile cause, either financial or in the form of spot prizes would be warmly welcomed. So, make sure to come along, as a great night is in prospect.

previously used. Burrow Road is full of laneways and some are called after people who lived on them and they don’t appear on any maps. Only the locals know them, he said. It seems that the council are not for turning on this decision. It would appear that leaving the name ‘Nether Cross’ and providing adequate signage at the entrance to all of the laneways would have solved this problem very quickly. Surely the council have more pressing issues to be getting along with, instead of causing unnecessary hardship to Mary Brennan.

People in the North County have always had a proud record of trying to make their communities better, and now Junior Chamber International Ireland (JCI), the world’s largest leadership and personal development organisation for young people, is encouraging people to become active in their community by participating in Active Citizen Week from October 3rd through to the 10th. ‘It has never been more important that people start to pledge and do things that will make a difference. When people pledge to do one of

the 50 Ways to Active Citizenship they give an email address and then we follow up with them to see how they are getting on with their pledge. Again, this really helps motivate people to be more Active Citizens.’ said Brian J Smith, the North County chairman. JCI branches from all around Ireland will be participating in projects to benefit their local communities and encourage everyone to start thinking about ways to become more involved in their community. In the North County, a clean up of

Malahide beach and Marina is planned for Saturday October 9th.

From planting flowers in a public area, to giving blood or donating unwanted books to your local library, there are lots of ways to get involved.

By Bob McKenzie Originally there was a fence erected here by the developer, but 18 months ago, residents of Hampton Woods decided to erect a wall as a safety precaution against their children accessing a busy road via the laneway. It is now a magnet for antisocial behaviour. Residents in Hampton Wood were not informed that the wall was being demolished after lobbying by their neighbours in Bremore Castle to open up the lane. Residents, Liam and Emer Peel who live adjacent to the laneway told the County Leader that since the wall was demolished they cannot relax in their own home. “Late at night, youths congregate in the laneway leaving debris such as bottles and cans. They are there until all hours of the night.” The Hampton Woods Residents Association want the council to engage with them on an issue which is causing sleepless nights for many members who have young children who are particularly vulnerable to possible

traffic accidents, as there is currently just a gaping hole where a wall used to be. Bremore Castle resident, Victor Dunne, who has lobbied for the opening up of the laneway told the County Leader “We wanted it opened up to make a quicker, more efficient journey to access the town, it saves five minutes off a fifteen minute journey. I would like to see the council

would be on the agenda. A spokesperson said, “I can confirm that a fully accessible pedestrian link was provided between Bremore Castle and Hampton Woods by the developer under the terms of the planning permission for the two estates. The purpose of the link is to provide ease of access to residents and schoolgoing children living in the area. This was subse-

estate. I am very concerned with the Health and Safety aspect of the design of this access, and I am concerned that the relevant planner or engineer could sign off on this access as a safe point of access, particu-

larily for small or teenage children. There should be some sort of barrier preventing children from going directly out onto the roadway.” He continued, “I suggest a meeting should be arranged with represen-

titives of both residents associations to see if a solution can be found. There is something radically wrong with the planning regulations that results in residents under siege in their own homes,” he concluded.

DUBLIN AIRPORT NOTICE Due to essential maintenance work on the main runway at Dublin Airport, Runway 10/28 will be withdrawn from service on four consecutive nights from approx 2300 to 0500hrs, commencing Monday 4th October 2010. In facilitating this essential maintenance work Runway 16/34 will be in operation on these dates, which may result in increased aircraft noise levels in the Santry, Beaumont, Artane, Clontarf and North County Dublin residential areas. In certain weather conditions areas in South County Dublin (Dun Laoghaire, Rathdown and surrounding areas) may also experience some increase in aircraft noise levels while this work is underway. This essential maintenance work is critical to the ongoing safe operation of the Airport and is being carried out in accordance with international standards in aviation safety. Advertorial

A Day in the Life of a Funeral Director s research days go, this was high on the human-interest scale – a day spent in the company of a busy Dublin Funeral Director. Along with my tape recorder, I packed a layman’s curiosity and maybe just a dash of trepidation. The trepidation took a back seat when I met Jonathan Stafford, the affable and courteous MD at the helm of Stafford’s Funeral Directors, one of Dublin’s longest standing family firms. In his late-thirties, Jonathan is younger than I expected.

A

8.30 a.m. The early morning head office was a hive of activity, but there was also a sense of decorum in this busy North City workplace, a mindfulness among the staff that just down the corridor in the different chapels of rest, recently deceased people are laid out for their final repose, that deeply symbolic age-old pause between one world and the next. Jonathan takes a call concerning Stafford’s new Portmarnock Funeral Home – it’s due to open on the 1st October; he is meeting key people out there later in the morning and I’ll be tagging along. As we moved through the organisation, Jonathan introduced me to staff members and if you didn’t know better, you might well be learning how a successful Accountancy firm goes about its day. But then it all got a bit different. We were chatting with Chris, the Operations Manager of Stafford’s, when an urgent call came through to him from a European Embassy concerning the repatriation of an Irish citizen who had suffered a massive heart attack on holiday and had passed away. It was chilling to think of it. Holidays are synonymous with lightness and joy and anticipation. Bereavement and death are not supposed to be a part of the package deal. And then you remember that death has no boundaries and is not mindful of home or nationality. And so of course people die on vacation. As we left Chris and the diplomat to the important business of having this Irishman’s remains brought back to his native homeland, Jonathan elaborated on that specialised aspect of their service. ‘We deal with an unbelievable amount of red tape in the effort to have a deceased Irish person brought home. It’s very difficult for the families, entangled in yards of bureaucratic demands along with the shock and intensity. And that’s before you even begin to get your head around the language barrier.’ I agree with him that life really can change in the flip of a moment, a family basking in the heat of a well earned holiday one minute and then so suddenly thrown into chaos and confusion and pain. ‘It must be a relief for the relatives to let you guys deal with the nightmare of documentation’. ‘It is,’ agreed Jonathan. ‘Can be highly stressful at first. Then there’s the emotional task of actually telling us down the line that their beloved relative has passed away. But once they know that we can take immediate action on their behalf, you can hear the relief in their voices.’ 9.00 a.m. You can feel things ratchet up a notch. Funeral time is fast approaching and I take a step back to observe, and leave Jonathan direct his attention to the demands of a busy morning. There’s a lot happening. Phones are ringing loudly but answered by various staff with quiet reassuring efficiency. Jonathan Stafford is right up to the minute on every single aspect of all the current funerals taking place. He seems to have an uncanny ability to move fluidly between different demands, yet give his undivided attention to the smallest detail. As a result,

By Deirdre Cronin families are constantly reassured that their deeply emotional funeral farewell is given the highest priority. No issue or special request is too small. Flower tributes are arriving from Stafford’s dedicated floral service, spilling out around the reception desk in glorious abundance, and there’s a poignancy to it all, a reminder of the goodness of friends remembering to call the florist, offering a touch of colour to lighten the dark days of the bereaved family. Jonathan continues to move with quiet

Directors), and has been highly instrumental in raising the professional standards of his profession, through education policy, ethical standards charters and much more. And yet as I observe Jonathan’s hands-on style of management, his involvement with the families he serves is deeply indicative of the core ethos running through Stafford’s long-established family firm. ‘Stafford’s was always a very community orientated business. And that strong core thread is still what we are about. I meet people almost every day who remember my grandfather and how he began with one car providing funeral assistance for local neighbours and friends in the North Strand area. And my own father, John Stafford developed the firm over many years. Dad’s whole life has been about service to his community in one form or other - his deep connections to people framed his long career in public office and also made him an outstanding Funeral Director. Dad was unstintingly generous in

• Jonathan Stafford

assurance through a day filled with what seemed to me to be a multitude of challenges. The most pressing issue right now is the fact that he basically needs to attend one Funeral in Howth at 10 o’clock and get to Malahide in time for another Funeral Mass at 11. ‘It’s not so much a question of logistics’, says Jonathan. ‘I don’t mean that I have to drive the hearse and suddenly abandon one family while high-tailing across the city to the next. Everything is already in place for both funerals, and the neccessary men assigned to each service. But I find that I’m involved in every funeral that we arrange to some degree, and that often entails attending more than one funeral or removal on any given day. The gift of bi-location would be nice.’ With over 20 years experience in the Funeral business, the young Managing Director is also current President of the IAFD, (Irish Association of Funeral

passing on his wisdom but also wise enough to give me free rein to develop my own ideas. People in North Dublin still love to link in with him after various funeral services.’ 12.00 p.m. There’s time for a quick coffee, and Jonathan is reflecting on the two funerals. ‘They were both slightly unusual but for different reasons. The earlier service had very few mourners. The deceased man had come in to see me 4 years ago, asked me to pre-arrange his funeral. A meticulous man, pleasant manner. Had gone to London at 15. His family had all passed on. I knew I was probably the only person at the service this morning that had known him well. ‘That must be awful. Knowing that you really are alone.’ ‘You would think so, but John, that was his name, he came to see me a good few times and I tell you, that man had a huge sense of peace and acceptance about him. A real

news@northcountyleader.ie

example of how faith can sustain. And then I go to Malahide and there’s a huge family gathering and an outpouring of emotion. This was Paul, he was 86, same generation as the other gentleman. And of course that’s a different kind of bereavement, when a person passes at a ‘good’ age, after a long life. A different kind of grieving happens. But what really added to the family sadness was the fact that Paul had only buried his wife 5 weeks ago.’ ‘Do you think he died of a broken heart?’ ‘Who knows, says Jonathan. ‘But I can tell you this – we’ve seen that sequence happen a lot over the years. That doesn’t make it any easier for the family – the strangeness of a double blow like that is one huge shock to absorb.’ 12.30 pm: We’re driving to Portmarnock, where Jonathan is meeting an engineer connected to the newly built Stafford’s Funeral Home in the heart of the coastal suburb. It’s a beautiful building set right against the backdrop of the Portmarnock Estuary. It’s hard to believe that a 15 minute drive from the city centre can bring a body to such a deeply peaceful location. Jonathan tells me what motivated him to open a state-of-the-art funeral home, especially in recessionary times. ‘Quite simply, the time was right,’ says Jonathan. ‘You could say that in like the slow and seemly pace of a funeral procession, Stafford’s moves forward with measured progress. It was around 1980 when we opened Maypark on the Malahide Road to facilitate the suburban expansion. North Strand and Maypark are still pivotal to our service – Portmarnock takes things to a new level in terms of the options now available to the communities we serve in North Dublin, including Portmarnock, Baldoyle, Sutton, Howth, Donaghmede, Clontarf, Raheny, Malahide, Kinsealy and beyond.’ His concept makes complete sense when I see the newly completed building. It’s full of brightness and light, a place that might lift the spirits of families in mourning. Very spacious with 4,500 square feet in total and four interchangeable chapels of rest, which means that Stafford’s can cater for all kinds of funeral services, from small intimate gatherings to large extended crowds. ‘Funeral patterns in Ireland are changing very rapidly for the first time in 50 years,’ says Jonathan, ‘and Portmarnock has incorporated all these emerging trends. Dublin’s traffic congestion has created a huge need for extensive car parking facilities. The concept behind our new building was mindful of creating new possibilities for people. Take the one-movement Funeral Service, where a family would rather not have a Removal, and don’t go to the Church until the morning of the Funeral Mass. This creates an immediate need for the family – a larger place where they can gather the evening before to spend time with their deceased relative or friend. Stafford’s can arrange to have an evening prayer service if required. Look, the nature of our business means that every single day families come to us in deep states of trauma, right in the midst of maybe the biggest challenge they’ll ever face. That’s a huge motivation to us to enhance service. A key element of that is laying on as many options as possible. Spaciousness and atmosphere means families can be together in way that sustains them through the trauma.’ ‘Will you cater for people who require a Humanist, Non religious Civil Funeral Service?’ ‘Of course. The Portmarnock building is very inclusive and roomy and expansive in design. Civil ceremonies are just one element of the changing funeral patterns; we already arrange them, but Portmarnock literally opens the field of possibilities in terms of choice for all.’ As we finish our interview and drive away, it’s easy to see what he means. Looking out across the broad tranquil sweep of the Estuary, you can easily imagine any Funeral Service lifted to a special dimension by virtue of such peaceful surroundings.

New Secondary School For Lusk Looks Likely The County Council and the Department of Education are very close to completing the purchase of a site for the first secondary school in Lusk. This will be welcome news for all the parents of children in Lusk who are having difficulty finding places in the nearby towns of Rush and Skerries, where the secondary schools are full. The site is located behind the existing Educate Together school off the Ring Road in Lusk and beside extensive playing fields and the planned new facilities for the local Soccer club.

Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG) told the County Leader, “This is great news for Lusk. I am informed that the paperwork is being processed and may take about a month to complete. The council will then buy the site and be reimbursed by the Department of Education under the Fingal Schools Plan. When the site is purchased, the project moves to the next phase of design and tender.” Deputy James Reilly and I have been lobbying for the secondary school for some time and I can assure you that the deputy leader of Fine Gael will make Lusk secondary school a priority if there is a change of Government and he is sitting at the cabinet table as a Minister,” concluded O’Leary

Special Report The town of Swords has blossomed over the last ten years from a place that was a by-pass on the way to the north for many, or when families and organisations were visiting the sea-side. However, these days it is a completely different story as the humble village of Swords has exploded into a fantastic one stop shop to all who live in the North County and visit.

Many of us find the thought of heading into the city centre daunting with so many disadvantages, like parking, traffic and chaos to mention a few. fulfilling watching the kids play with their toy cars exploiting the pattern of the carpet to imaginative effect. The great aspect that remains about carpeting is that carpets can do so much to reflect a persons persona. Carpet can accentuate a naturally lightened room or brighten up a children’s bedroom providing bright primary colours or complex patterns for the living room. Taking advice from an experienced carpet fitter or an expert in flooring is a must as few can carpet a stairwell as well as the professionals. Similarly one should invest time to consider a trip to a carpet shop and browse the wide selection of carpets available to the discerning shopper.

Balbriggan Displays Its Culinary Delights The inaugural Bridgestone Balbriggan Food Festival gave local North County producers the chance to showcase their wares in Ireland’s fastest growing large town. The idea of the festival was quite simple, a chance for members of the public to sample local goods and produce. These ranged from fruit to fish, with vegetables and deli meats showcased alongside some of the North County’s best eateries, with menus which would suit any pocket. The festival featured food and product demonstrations with a chance to have a little nibble of the various tasty delights on show. Another unique selling point for the festival was the offer from sponsors, Bridgestone, who are renowned in the restaurant guide business, to give an outstanding local artisan food producer or restaurant a year long mentoring programme from John McKenna, whose business and culinary expertise would help the lucky recipient take the next big step for success. The judges were so impressed with the standard of the exhibitors that they decided to make two mentoring awards. The

President of the Balbriggan Chamber Of Commerce, Joe English was delighted by a big turnout of around 500 for the festival, with exhibitors getting terrific feedback from ordinary members of the public who are their target market. “I don’t think in our wildest dreams we would have had such a good turnout to see the best the North county has to offer. People are buzzed up, it’s a wonderful showcase for local small business in the food sector. We’re in stricken times and the idea behind this festival is to get the local community pulling together buying locally produced goods. If a euro is spent locally, it grows and that makes the local economy work,” he said. The festival was completely funded by Bridgestone with exhibitors being able to showcase their culinary delights free of charge.

Youth Wellbeing Report To Launch In Balbriggan

The Balbriggan Youth Wellbeing Working Group is extending an open public invitation to the launch of “A Voice Being Heard” - A Research Report on Youth Wellbeing in Balbriggan. The launch will take place on Friday 8th October at 5pm in Balbriggan Town Hall and features a key note address from Dr. Tony Bates, Founding Director of Headstrong; the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. Research completed by Headstrong identified that one in five young people in Ireland report having no one to talk to about their problems, while nearly one in ten reported having serious problems but not seeking professional help. Statistics from the National Office for Suicide Prevention (2007) indicate that Ireland has the fifth highest rate of youth suicide (15-24 years) in the European Union and that suicide is now the leading cause of death among young people in Ireland, claiming more lives than road traffic accidents and cancer. Balbriggan has one of the highest proportions of young people nationally, with 27 per cent of the population aged 18 years and younger. The Balbriggan Youth Wellbeing Working Group was set up in response to increasing concerns for young people in an area experiencing unprecedented growth and increasing diversity in a landscape of limited service provision. The group, which is co-ordinated by Fingal LEADER Partnership, represents a wide range of community and statutory agencies and aims to develop and enhance services to promote positive mental health amongst young people and their communities.

SKIN The vitality of a persons health is always signified from their skin. Smooth, glowing skin, can speak volumes for a man or woman who possess oodles of energy and life force. Good skin care comes in many varieties, for women a subtly applied blusher over a professional foundation will still need the same level of TLC when removing it to replace with moisturisers before bedtime. Both men and women need to consider what is on their skin before either decide to play around or decorate; think painting, what does an instruction manual tell you before painting? The winter months can mean extra wear and tear for your vehicle. Remember that keeping your car well maintained with regular car maintenance checks can guarantee warm, secure and reliable motoring. At the beginning of the Winter Season spray some lubricant oil into each door lock. This prevents the key cylinders from getting a little stiff as they age. It’s important to have your car (or light commercial) serviced, including a full safety check, as winter approaches. This is the time of the year when the weather is becoming harsher and the long, dark evenings are almost here and rather than walking short distances, many tend to use the car for the shortest of trips. The basic requirements at this time of year are the

safety checks, especially the tyres. Looking after the simple things on your car can make life hassle free when winter hits. Some of these things include, wipers, lights, coolant, oil and other levels. The car always seems to come second, but don’t compromise on safety. Regular servicing will be more cost effective. Regular servicing means peace of mind and a saving in the long term, but it can add value to your car when you go to trade it in. A full service history is something car buyers are looking for more and more, so if you’re concerned about the residual value of your vehicle, take it to a garage with a reputation. Regular maintenance will prolong the life of your car and now with the short dark evenings, wind, rain and frost as well as the odd spell of snow, these are the harsh conditions drivers can expect this coming winter. Nobody was 100 percent prepared for the cruel winter we had last year, so don’t be caught this year. Your local mechanic or garage can assist you to prepare your vehicle for the long winter ahead.

Huge Undertaking By Skerries Sailor Skerries man, Adam Burke is looking to undertake one of the toughest rowing events in the world, the Atlantic Rowing Race. The ocean rowing event stretches for 4,700km between the Canary Islands and the West Indies, and is heralded as one of the most gruelling sea events worldwide. Originally, Adam was to be joined by a fellow Skerries man, Brendan Guildea, and the pair were to undertake the expedition together in 2011. However, Adam was recently contacted by Peter Adam Burke Williams, from South Dublin, who proposed that he partake with an English team who were looking for more team members. This rendered Brendan unable to partake due to college commitments. Speaking to the County Leader, Adam explained how the race involves “a two year effort. It focuses on three aspects of preparation; fundraising, preparing your boat, and

By Rob O’Hanrahan preparing your body. It costs roughly €70,000 to take part in the race overall, so when I was offered the opportunity to trial with the team from England, it was the better option. It works out cheaper and more efficient, as I’ll be part of a six man team rather than a twoman”. The race is renowned for its intense hardship, yet Adam relishes the challenge. Two men who undertook the race in 2005, James Cracknell and Ben Fogle, released a documentary in 2006 showcasing the harsh weather and immense physical toll the pair had to endure in order to complete the race. Laughing, Adam explained that “while anyone else who watched that would run a mile, I just remember saying to myself ‘I want to do that’. Adam now must undertake trials with the English team to secure his place for the 2011 event.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers

Recruitment Agencies Writes Siobhán Kinsella Choosing the right service provider for you is something you should spend time thinking about. If you were going to spend €1,000 would you check to ensure the companies you are looking at best serve your needs? The relationship you have with your recruiter can have a huge impact on your future. How do agencies make money? They make money by firstly working incredibly hard at creating relationships with employers, understanding their business and their culture. Agencies make a fee from the employer. Recruitment agencies however are ten a penny! Why does

a company use a particular agency? The agency has to do their research (far more than the candidate), they have to convince the employer they understand the company, the type, calibre, background and mindset of the candidate they need and still it’s no placement no fee. If it doesn’t work out – refund is due! How do you fit into this? If you were an employer looking to fill a vacancy you would choose a large agency (like CPL with specialist divisions for all areas) or a boutique agency specialising in the area your vacancy is based. As a candidate you should register with agencies with the mindset of that employer! It is in the agency’s best interests to place good candidates or they will not be called again! Any good agency is quite discerning about whom they send to their clients. Is that you? If it is remember to choose your agency well. Dress to impress! Treat the agency interview as seriously as

you would an employer interview – they are your conduit! People do business with people; if you want an agency to represent you to the varied client base they have, recognise that and work it! What benefits them benefits you! The very best of luck!
