Forgotten Crafts Return In Portmarnock
DAA Presents Cheque To Beaumont Hospital
By Julie Murphy The return of the Cottage Industry has made its way into the village of Portmarnock, as one resident encourages the local community to share their craft. Whether you are an accomplished crossstitcher or talented card-maker, Pauline Geoghegan invites you to share your skills in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In these times of recession and unemployment, many people are finding themselves at a loose end and this group will not only offer a way to spend your time, but it might also give you a chance to create a product worth selling. Pauline plans to hold the craft day in St Anne's Parish Centre, Portmarnock from 10.00 am to 1.00pm on the third Saturday of each month. This is a great opportunity for people to get out and

Balbriggan Youngsters Take On A Mountain
Reilly Promises To End Two-Tier Health Service Deputy James Reilly, Fine Gael Health Spokesperson has promised to abolish the two tier health service, if elected at the upcoming general election. This is great news for long suffering North County residents, who will have equal access to all the health care they need. Reacting to reports that the VHI is to increase premiums on its corporate price plans, Reilly said it will be yet another squeeze on customers of James Reilly TD the State-supported health insurer. He said, “We are offering a revolution in healthcare, which will deliver in a high quality patient-focussed service. Just weeks ago we learned that the VHI was increasing the cost of policies by up to 45 per cent now it seems certain that their corporate plans are set to jump by up to 23 per cent. “Corporate plans may be aimed at companies, but many savvy consumers have also taken them on individually in a bid to save on the annual cost of health insurance. 50,000 VHI customers will now be hit by an increase of more than €140 a year.” Reilly went on to promise the end of the two tier system and replicate the systems in place in Holland and Canada. “This will be the final nail in the coffin for many VHI customers, who have been trying to decide whether they can still afford health insurance,” he said. “The VHI is blaming the price hikes on the increase in the cost of providing private beds in public hospitals. Fine Gael’s Fair Care policy will put an end to the current two-tier health system, which is at the root of this problem. “In Government, Fine Gael will deliver a system of Universal Health Insurance, where everyone will be covered. That means every Irish person will have equal access to all the health care they need. “Fine Gael wants to end the status quo, where patients are seen as a cost and a burden on the health system. We are offering a revolution in healthcare, which will deliver in a high quality patient-focussed service. Holland has it, Ireland needs it and Fine Gael will deliver it,” he concluded.

The excitement reached fever pitch as students of St Catherine's School in Rush could'nt wait to try out the new pitch at the opening of the new multi use sports Pic: SW facility.
Opening Of New Multi Games Facility In Rush By Sinead Walsh There was great excitement at St. Catherine’s National School in Rush on Wednesday last, 9th February, as a new multi-games facility was opened at the school. The students all celebrated the opening of this wonderful facility, which will make a huge difference to the school and surrounds. The pitch was officially opened by County Mayor, Cllr. Ken Farrell, and Assistant Manager of the Irish Football team, Marco Tardelli. Also in attendance were some of the local representatives who will contest the upcoming general election. The students got to test out the new grounds, and were treated to a training session, hosted by
Mick Pender, FAI Development Officer for Swords, and Niall McGuirk, Senior Sports Development Officer for the County Council. This was followed by the ribbon being snipped, and the pitch officially being declared open. Principal of St. Catherine’s, Gerard Ó’Sé told the County Leader of his delight at the opening of the pitch. “It’s great for us, but it also benefits the other teams around the area too.” Tardelli, a World Cup winner himself, described the pitch as “fantastic”, and expressed his hope that, in the near future, Ireland will have some World Cup winners of its own. The pitch is part of a UEFA and FAI scheme called “The Hat-trick Initiative”. It is one of eight pitches currently open, with plans for more to go ahead in the near future.

Elina Ceban, Szymon Baranowski and Aylin Aydin from Balbriggan Educate Together primary school are the members of a lucky team who have secured a place in a new series on RTÉ. The new science adventure series called ‘The Mountain’ will feature the Balbriggan team on Friday February 25th, the same day as the elections will take place. Aoife O’Reilly from the team of ‘The Mountain’, told the
3 County Leader, “ We saw 200 team that applied to take part in the Mountain and the Balbriggan team was one of the 24 selected selected through extensive auditions. The dynamics of the children was outstanding. We saw how they got on and could tell they were really good friends and a good team. The enthusiasm of the children was brilliant and they were great to work with”. The team contacted schools, youth organisations nationwide, advertised on line and TV in order to allow children to take part. The Balbriggan team will take on a team from Wexford, as their skills are put to the test in science based challenges around an adventures style course. The youngsters will need to apply brains, brawn, and stamina to be first to The Mountain summit.

I will be publishing details in this regard in the coming weeks.” He then highlighted the Labour Party’s plans to provide protection for hard pressed mortgage holders. “Among our proposals is a plan to introduce legislation to establish a Personal Debt Management Agency to provide impartial advice to those in arrears, conduct inde-
pendent assessments of the distressed borrowers repayment capacity, and negotiate mortgage and personal debt repayment plans between distressed borrowers and credit institutions. We will also introduce legislation to introduce farreaching reforms to Mortgage Interest Supplement scheme, so that those in certain cases will qualify for some support. Kelleher then took a swipe at the government when he said, “This Fianna Fail government has no problem dancing to the tune of the banks when they are in crisis, but when ordinary people are facing difficulty in making mortgage repayments, the response is pathetic. Families are now desperately looking for solutions, but this Government is failing them.”

Pope’s Pilot Sadly Passes Away By Sinead Walsh The death has occurred of Captain Thomas (Tommie) McKeown from Malahide. Captain McKeown who celebrated his 90th birthday last October, was famous for flying Pope John Paul II to Ireland on September 29, 1979. Eagle eyed passers by would have noticed a replica Aer Lingus 747 sitting on the window sill of Captain McKeown’s home on Yellow Walls Road. It was somewhat sad to see this plane disappear last year when Captain McKeown moved into a local Nursing Home. He flew for Aer Lingus for 34 years, transporting many dignitaries in his time including Taoisigh Jack Lynch and Eamon de Valera. He also carried many glamorous passengers, such as Maureen O’Hara and the late Princess Grace of Monaco. The famous pilot joined the

He has spoken in the past of proudly defending Ireland’s neutrality as he flew Hawker Hurricane Fighters in the early years of World War II. Despite carrying many famous passengers safely to their destination during his career, her father especially remembers the Pope’s visit. His daughter, Colette Farrelly, told the County Leader, “My dad often reminisced about bringing the Pontiff to the Phoenix Park.” As the distinctive blue and green Aer Lingus jet flew over the Park to rapturous applause, Colette remembers how, “he tilted the plane’s wings allowing the Pope to see the crowd below.” She recalls that even in his latter years he spoke proudly of flying the Pope to Ireland and in a poignant tribute she finishes our conversation by describing herself as ‘hugely proud of my Dad.’ Pre-deceased by his wife Alice and son Brendan, the distinguished Captain is survived by Colette and her sister Anne Hales.

Old Borough Students Visit Terminal 2 As part of the letterwriting project in which the Old Borough School is currently involved, the fifth and sixth class pupils of the school visited the recently opened Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport last week. Teacher, Ciara Kelleher told the County Leader, “All the pupils were very excited as we boarded the bus last week. They were looking forward to the visit, as very few of them had been inside the terminal since it opened.” The idea behind the visit was that the pupils would be given a tour of the Terminal and follow up with a letter to the DAA, outlining their impressions. The letters will be on display inside the terminal. The tour started on the ground floor in the Departures Hall. A destination for a virtual flight was selected from the scheduled departures and

Balbriggan To w n Centre Balbriggan is one of the fastest growing towns in the North County, boasting a thriving, bubbly town and fantastic beach and magnificent castle. The town has had a huge transformation over the last decade, with the opening of the M1 motorway, which took a huge amount of traffic out of the main street of the town. Now with the new roads opened, Balbriggan is a more community focused place to live. People can enjoy this beautiful town without the constant trucks and traffic that once caused traffic problems for the inhabitants of this beautiful seaside town. The town centre has a buzz in the air and even though the town is busy, it has a great atmosphere. Joe English, CEO of Balbriggan Chamber told the County Leader, “Balbriggan’s refurbished streets, new Civic office and enhanced St. George’s Square are just some of the reasons to visit this growing old seaside town. A greater variety of retail shops have emerged on the High Street in recent years including ladies and men’s fashions, bridle wear, beauticians, designer jewellery, pharmacy gift shops, exotic food stores, and many more complemented by an excellent mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and high end hotel

It’s a natural inlet and is ideal for building sand castles, bathing and soaking up the sun during the summer months. North County Dublin’s
Sargent Calls For Farmers’ Market For Rush By Patrick Finnegan Local Green Party candidate, Trevor Sargent has called for the establishment of a Farmers’ Market in Rush. Sargent spoke to the County Leader about the huge advantages of such a market being located in the town, when he said, “Rush is at the centre of the horticultural heartland of the country, with 50 per cent of our fresh vegetables coming from the area and its north county hinterland. There could Trevor Sargent TD hardly be a more fitting location for a vibrant local farmers’ market. Against this background, it’s clear that Rush needs its own market,” he said. Sargent went on to explain that the establishment of such a market has come to his attention on the hustings, “This is something that came up several times on the doorsteps in Rush over the last few days. All it takes is a little initiative, organisation and, crucially, the support of the community. On the canvass, I met a young man

looking for work who is interested in co-ordinating such a market, so that’s one of the requirements met. Now we need the rest of the community to support the development. According to the local TD, “To date we have achieved much success in encouraging local businesses, especially food producers, to develop new ways of reaching their customers. Local farmers’ markets are one such initiative. Here we have much to be proud of.” “The Balbriggan Fish and Farmers’ Market, supported by the local Chamber of Commerce, Town Council and County Council, was the first such market in Dublin to receive the Bord Bia Good Practice Standard in 2009. This market has become a centrepiece of the town and a valuable source of fresh, local produce,” he said. Sargent is a regular visitor to the Saturday market in Skerries, which takes place with the support of Skerries Mills. While the Swords market is currently not operating, there are hopes that it will re-open soon. He recently opened a new market in Malahide. The market currently offers a wide range of handmade and local produce, but needs more food items. This is a terrific opportunity for local growers to reach a potentially large number of customers. Lusk does not yet have a full market but much of the local demand is satisfied by the presence of Vincent Thorne’s vegetable stall. Against this background, it’s clear that Rush needs its own market,” he concluded.

Green Party leader, John Gormley, paid a visit to Swords last week, as part of his support for local candidate, Trevor Sargent. Sargent received a warm welcome from locals on Swords Main Street, as they walked from the Lord Mayor’s pub and continued through the town and ended at the offices of the County Leader. Well known resident Margaret Thorpe, who is one of the few people who lives on Main Street, was delighted when she opened the door to the party and received a friendly kiss on the cheek from Sargent. The party were followed by TV crews, photographers, journalists and various other members of the media. The party also visited Mrs Quin’s Charity shop and spoke to the staff and volunteers. Gormley and Sargent both purchased pieces of china for each other and enjoyed some banter with all. As part of his walkabout, he

paid a visit to the local No 1 newspaper, the County Leader. When asked about the reaction of voters in the area, he was very positive and upbeat about local Green Party candidate, Trevor Sargent. Gormley said, “It is very important to keep a good man in office, who has served this constituency so well for so long. Trevor is getting a great response from the electorate and we need to keep up the pressure to ensure we get him elected. Every last minute counts and every single number 1 vote is essential.” A confident Gormley predicted that Sargent may well edge out one of the Fianna Fail candidates at the election. For his part, Sargent said, “Our actions while in government, particularly for unemployed people is now beginning to pay dividends and our retrofitting grants for home insulation, particularly after such a harsh winter, has come in very handy.”

founded by Saint Colmcille. Legend has it that the saint blessed a local well, giving the town its name, Sord, meaning ‘clear’ or ‘pure’. However, An Sord also means ‘the water source’ and could indicate a large communal
drinking well that existed in antiquity. the well is located on Church Road off Main Street opposite The Pavilions. Sord may also refer to a ‘sward’, an ‘expanse of grass’. In 1994, Swords became a county

family involved and turn it into a project that can be enjoyed by all. This might be easier said than done as children and teenagers are reluctant to do housework, so if they don’t, now might be the time to start making a few small changes. Try making a wall chart with every member of the family’s name on it. Start with small jobs and you can reward the children daily and by the end of the week they can earn money or a treat.
your child has too many toys and they are finding it hard to part with some of the older ones, encourage them to let them go as they will go to children who are less fortunate. Place all the old toys into a charity bag or find a box to put them in. This can be your chance to get stuck in and sort out some old clothes, as the saying goes, ‘Out with the Old, In with the New’. By encouraging your child to de-clutter you’re helping them create a good habit and hopefully they will stick to this. For the older children or teenagers, it may not be so easy but you need to put the rules in place. You really are doing them a favour by setting them up for independence and they also get a feel of how to look after themselves.
STEP BY STEP So once your bedrooms are de-cluttered of old clothes, toys and brick-abrack, you can stand back and see what improvements need to be made. The floor may need replacing and here in the North County there are a great selection of wooden and laminate flooring and carpets available to put the finishing touches to your room and your children’s rooms. With everything put in it’s place and clear flooring there are few other things to add to your room that won’t de-clutter it. Some nice scattered cushions on the bed and bed clothes with matching curtains, and nicely fitted blinds on the window, your room will look like a place you will want to relax and enjoy.

Swords solicitor, Pat McGonagle has confirmed that the ‘Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010’ has been passed into law on 1st January last. He told the County Leader, “The first part of the Act is fairly straightforward in that it in effect, extends the marriage law and its effect on relationships to ‘Civil Partnerships’. For this part of the Act to have any effect, parties must choose to enter into a Civil Partnership by registering this partnership under the terms of the Act,” he said. McGonagle went on to say that “the second part of the Act, which relates to the Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants is far less straightforward.” The second generation Swords solicitor warns that, “unless people who come under the definition of Cohabitants specifically opt out, the Pat McGonagle provisions of the Act will apply to them automatically. People also need to be aware of the provisions of the Redress Scheme, which are wide and extensive and can have a far reaching effect on people’s finances and property.” Therefore it is essential for couples who believe they may be affected by the terms of this Act to seek legal advice. It is open to parties involved in a qualifying Cohabitation Relationship to opt out by singing an Opt Out Agreement, once they have sought and obtained legal advice, pursuant to the provisions of the Act. McGonagle concluded by saying, “This Act fundamentally changes the relationship between unmarried couples, whether they are heterosexual, same sex couples and unmarried people would be wise to consider the effect that this Act might have on their lives in the future.
Now Is The Perfect Time To Teach English Every year, thousands of European teenagers come to Ireland to improve their English. This brings with it a huge demand from private language colleges all over Ireland for teachers. To take advantage of these opportunities you need a TEFL certificate. If you are a qualified teacher, you can apply for the ‘Certificate for English Language Teaching to second level students’. This is a one-week course held at Edgewater College in Drogheda. There are courses running during Easter and the summer, when Primary School teachers will have the added benefit of being able to claim three EPV days for their attendance. For non-qualified teachers, the CELT is designed specifically for those with no teaching background. It qualifies you to teach adults and juniors. To work in Ireland, you need a level 7 qualification, but if you are interested in travelling, in many other countries you don’t. Both of these qualifications are accredited in Ireland by ACELS who work under the auspices of The Department of Education and Skills and the CELT is recognised throughout the world. Balbriggan School Hoping For Green Flag The Green School Committee in St. Teresa’s School, Balbriggan is in the final stages of preparation for their 3rd Green Flag. They have learned a lot about water these last two years and are hoping to qualify for another Green Flag this year. As part of their assessment for the Green Flag, they have just finished a ‘Clean-Up’ of Pinewood Estate. They have cleaned Pinewood many times over the last few years and see a great improvement in the estate. All seasons are ideal to get married, different season bring different colour and themes can be applied depending on the season. But the main thing is planning and making sure you decide on the right venue and time of the year. Getting married is such a big step for a couple and there is so much detail you need to have a plan behind you. Wedding fairs and visiting different hotels and venues is a good place to start. It’s a good idea to keep a wedding diary and that way you won’t forget anything, or at least you have less chance of things going wrong.
Benefits Of Marriage Getting married is definitely making a come back with lots of couples tying the knot these days. Getting married has never been so fashionable and who can blame a lot of these couples considering the brilliant deals on offer at the moment, especially here in the North County. Being married means sharing expenses and splitting the costs of major purchases. If you consider the money women cost you and the money you’d
spend on dinner dates and the occasional gift it can save you a lot of money and time. Not to mention the advantages of having an extra income in the household. Marriage means you can afford the things you could never afford on your own, it means a better home, a better car, a better holiday, and better stuff. Sharing the responsibility of having two great lives is also a great foundation on the journey of a great life. The following guidelines and tips will come in handy for those who need to hold someone’s hand while walking down the aisle. From preparing your wedding vows to picking out your tuxedo or dress, for the big day and planning the honeymoon, you should take notes. Considering the groom, bride, best man, maid of honour, and the family all have their part to contribute in this special day, the groom has a lot of responsibility and needs to have everything covered. The bride also has lots of responsibilities so it’s a good idea for both to keep records.
The Groom Guide Aside from getting married and waking up next to the same woman every day for the rest of your life, the groom actually has some things to plan. It’s not like you must only show up at the altar, smile and agree to the question. The North County has put together a quick checklist of things the groom has to look into before the big day.
trimmings that the other men in your party need even for the page boys.
Making you own wedding vows is the kind of gesture that will make your woman melt and get her all worked up for the honeymoon. The traditional speech is a classic one, but you should add some spice and creative vocabulary to personalise and fill it with meaning. Throw in some inside comments to really make it your own.

in the hope that the fact they are not Fianna Fáil can only mean that the situation will improve. These hopes will be dashed.” “The next government is committed to the reduction of the deficit GDP ratio to three per cent within several years, which will mean more savage cutbacks on the basis of their policies and the capitalist system. The IMF/EU deal will remain as is under their administration.” “In that sense the election is as much about the opposition as it is about the government. A group of Socialist Party and United Left Alliance TDs and not a demoralised discredited Fianna Fáil will be the real opposition in the next Dáil. She also had a side swipe at rival left wing party, Sinn Féin. “Their desire to play this role is fatally compromised by their participation in the Northern Executive which is acting as a transmission belt for £4 billion of Tory/Liberal cuts. “Our opposition will not just be a parliamentary one but rather the parliamentary wing of an active mass opposition to government austerity, which will involve people power in the workplaces and the communities. In these conditions, the Socialist Party and the United Left Alliance will grow to become an even bigger factor in the political scene,” she concluded.

The sixth year Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) students of Malahide Community School recently held a sleepover in aid of three very worthwhile charities. It proved to be a very successful venture, with a total of €3,000 raised by the imaginative students and teachers. The three charities are Focus Ireland, the Ross Nugent Foundation and the Laura Brennan Charitable Trust. In the LCVP programme, students complete the traditional Leaving Certificate and also complete two modules, namely, Preparation for Work and Enterprise Education. Students are required to organise an enterprise activity, and so the class began planning for this in early November. Together with teacher, Ms. Siobhan O’Sullivan and her fellow LCVP teacher Ms. Claire Fitzgerald, they brainstormed several ideas and discovered that Focus Ireland organises annual school sleepovers in aid of homelessness each year. This idea appealed to the students, but they also wanted to split the funds and honour their friends Laura Brennan and Ross Nugent, both of whom attended the school and who died in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Mr. Molloy, the school principal, granted permission for the sleep over to go ahead and
Labour Party candidate, Brendan Ryan was concerned, though not surprised, to hear that Fianna Fáil seem to be relying on phone calls to canvass for support in Dublin North. “There has been a real sense of “where are the Fianna Fáil canvassers on the streets of Dublin North over the last few weeks?” said Ryan. “Nobody seems to have had their doors knocked by Fianna Fáil during this campaign. Over the last number of days we have heard reports, and seen first hand, that Fianna Fáil is taking refuge behind a telephone in order to gain support.” Ryan continued, “On one particular occasion, one of our canvassers was at the doorstep of a constituent in Skerries, when a phone call came in appealing for support for Fianna Fáil. This is just a disgraceful way to conduct an election campaign. The people have a right to meet and question their outgoing TDs. Engaging with the people like some sort of Telemarketing company is an insult to the people of Dublin North. It is also a damning indictment of how Fianna Fáil are approaching this campaign.” Ryan had words of praise for his own canvassers and said, “We have many volunteers knocking on doors in hail, rain, wind or sleet every night asking the people face to face to give the Labour Party and myself a number 1 vote. It is an honest and up front way to engage with the people of Dublin North,” he said. sixth year students were encouraged to get involved and fundraise for the three very worthy charities. Students were asked to raise €70 each - no mean feat in the current economic climate! Their generous families and friends in Malahide helped them to reach their target. On the night of the sleepover, many activities took place, including a table quiz, games room, board games, twister, movies and students raised even more money with a cake sale. The highlight of the evening for many students was a salsa lesson, delivered by woodwork teacher, Mr. Paul Byrne. Many local shops kindly supplied provisions for the tired students, who were delighted to discover that they had succeeded in reaching their goal of €3,000.

Retraining where does it take you? Writes Siobhán Kinsella
PLAN YOUR CAREER FOR 2011 Make sure you are on the winning team … Join the North County Leader Team
North County Leader - North County Dublin’s biggest and best read newspaper, is preparing for growth during 2011. We are seeking to appoint a number of new, motivated and self driven people to our Advertising Sales Department. Ideally we are seeking candidates with previous experience of advertising sales. Candidates should be hard working, conscientious and have the ability to work well in a team environment. An attractive salary, together with a rewarding commission structure, and where relevant, a car allowance is on offer.
In the current economic times, it is encouraging that so many people have engaged in retraining. This investment in yourself and your future is not to be underestimated. I have great regard for people who have evaluated their circumstances and considered the route most applicable to achieving future employment. This discipline and commitment is something that can make you stand out when seeking out your next employment opportunity. If asked what you have done since finishing in your last role, it shows tenacity and drive to say you invested in yourself and your future through education.
If you think you measure up, send your CV, for the attention of Gerry Fitzmaurice, North County Leader, Leader House, North Street, Swords, Co. Dublin We deliver er! or email: careers@northcountyleader.ie 1 because we deliv o. N www.northcountyleader.ie An Equal Opportunities Employer

When you have completed your course, from a degree in Human Resource management to Accounting technician (IATI), please be realistic regarding your options once completed. It can be an anticlimax and a disappointment for you not to be given an opportunity, or even an interview when applying for positions in your new field. Why is that? You have invested time, energy and commitment in completing your course, sitting your exams and it is undoubtedly a disappointment for you not to get the job you were training for. Not having practical experience will still be an obstacle. Getting “in the door” of any company still needs to be your first goal. Without experience you cannot call yourself a professional in the field in which you studied. Remember to actively seek and accept any position that gives you an opportunity to show your capability “in company”. Take any such opportunity and maximise on it. Just because you are qualified in HR does not make you a HR executive. Remember the leap from
getting “in the door” to becoming that HR executive is far shorter than the journey initially get in that door. Remember take any opportunity to impress rather than restricting yourself with preconceptions. The very best of luck

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one (mention it). Take it Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. Greatful thanks to all the Angels and Saints. BKK
