On Saturday 12th February, Pat and Nuala Brennan welcomed over 200 people to the Grand Hotel, Malahide for the third annual Laura Brennan Gala night. Pat and Nuala’s beautiful daughter, Laura died suddenly from a rare virus in April 2008 when she was just sixteen years old. Pat and Nuala subsequently established the Laura Brennan Charitable Trust in her memory. They have worked tirelessly ever since raising funds to ease financial pressure and provide vital medical assistance to families of sick children in the North County. One of the children to benefit from the Laura Brennan Charitable Trust is Mary Kate, a 12 year old girl from Swords who received potentially life saving treatment for anaphylaxis, the notorious nut allergy condition. Nuala read out a heart warming thank you letter from Mary Kate, describing how, as a result of her treatment, she no longer has to be ‘the

girl with the nut allergy’. I can just be me!’ There was a large gathering of talented basketball players from Malahide and Killester in attendance, representing an important aspect of Laura’s life. As Pat mentioned in his moving speech, ‘basketball was a passion for Laura, she just loved to play.” A great night was had by all with friends, family, neighbours and teachers celebrating Laura’s short, but happy life and raising much needed funds in the process.

There is still uncertainty surrounding the delivery of a major landfill facility at the Nevitt in Lusk. This is adding to a crisis that is seeing the county run out of landfill space.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the delay in delivering the Nevitt ‘superdump’ and a similar facility in Cork is a problem for the county’s future waste licence. The Nevitt proposal will not get underway for at least another year, if at all with the council and the EPA defending the project in a judicial review of it’s waste licence. A recent report published by the EPA says that 16 of Ireland’s 29 landfill facilities will be full within the next three years, making the delivery of new facilities as well as waste reduction a priority. The report says that even if the level of waste generated in the country remains at 2009 levels, the country would run out of landfill space within eight years, if the two new facilities at Cork and the Nevitt are not delivered. An emerging crisis in the North County region was pointed to in the report. As previously reported by the County Leader, by the end of this year the North County will be looking to ferry it’s waste to other parts of the country as Balleally closes and waiting continues for the opening of the proposed Nevitt facility. The EPA report warns of what it calls ‘significant inter regional movement of waste’ over the next three years as county landfills close one-by-one. However on the bright side there was some good news in the report on waste reduction.

Rush Musical Society Raise Funds For Charities

Thoughtful Swords Students Show They Care

By Patrick Finnegan As part of their ‘Young Social Innovators’ project, 5th Year students from Fingal Community College in Swords came up with a very innovative plan. They decided to focus on changing the attitudes of adults and elderly people towards teenagers. They felt that this attitude was, in many cases, false. “We wanted to show that we are not troublesome and clueless, but are innovative and grateful for our preceding generation,” said project member, Evan Guilmartin. After much soul searching, the team came up with the idea of holding a ‘Bingo Night’ for the Senior Citizens in the area.

Evan explains, “It is being held in

our school hall and we have secured donations from local companies and one of our fellow students, Kevin Clancy acted as bingo caller. We now want all adults and senior citizens to recognise our efforts and to understand that we want them to appreciate our efforts and contribution to their cause,” said Evan.

All this has been brought closer to reality, thanks to the Young Social Innovators team, which includes Conor Hall, Anthony Dempsey, Brian Irwin, Aaron Hoey, Seana Cole, Nicole Brown, Ashling Madigan, Linda Fleming, Arlene McGovern, Evan Guilmartin and the team leader, Catherine Campion. The very successful bingo evening took place in the school hall last Wednesday, 16th February and was followed by some light refreshments, which were enjoyed by all.

Members of Rush Musical Society have been ‘carolling’ in the Pavilions Shopping Centre since it opened its doors to the shoppers.

Last Christmas was no different, with the society collecting much deserved funds for two charities close to their hearts, namely Diabetes Federation of Ireland and the Central Remedial Clinic. Over the years the musical society has raised in excess of €35,000 for their designated charities by singing at Christmas in the

centre for the shoppers of the North County and through charity performances of their productions.

The Society would like to extend a sincere word of thanks to Ian Hunter and the staff of the Pavilions Shopping Centre for welcoming them to sing there every Christmas.

The generosity of the shoppers that willingly donate to the charities every year is much appreciated by all concerned.

Balbriggan Schools To Enter Time Capsule Competition Millfield Centre in Balbriggan has asked local schools to provide a piece of Balbriggan history in the form of a Time Capsule. This will mark the launch of the new Millfield Centre which will open in April 2011. The Time Capsules will include items that reflect the changing face of Balbriggan today and the winning entries will be buried in the centre until 2031. Schools in the Balbriggan area are being reminded that the deadline for the Competition, with a €4,000 prize is fast approaching and all entries must be in by 4th March. Prizes for the primary school and secondary school that provide the best entries are a €4,000 bursary each for school equipment. Judges for the competition are Cathaoirleach, Frank Snowe, local historian, Jim Walsh and Kevin

Competition judge, Kevin McCormack said, “It will be very interesting to see what items the school children include and to get an insight into what they see reflects the changing face of Balbriggan today and what they feel will be of interest to those who open the Time Capsule in 2031. All 10 schools in the area have expressed an interest in entering and we look forward to seeing some very interesting and creative entries from them.”

Sargent Welcomes New Balbriggan Gaelcholaiste

By Patrick Finnegan The drive for a new Post Primary Irish school in Balbriggan is gaining momentum. A crowd of over 180 people turned out en-masse to demonstrate their support for the establishment of a new Gaelcholaiste in Balbriggan last week. The meeting was held in Balbriggan Town Hall and many travelled from Rush, Lusk, Skerries and Swords and there was even a contingent who came from Ashbourne to show their support. All present, including local politicians concurred that Colaiste Ghlór na Mara ticked all the boxes in regards opening a new school and Trevor Sargent conveyed the news that the department viewed the submission as the most professional and comprehensive that they had ever seen. Sargent told the County Leader, “A site has already been designated for the new school. In a submission to the Department of Education last June, a total of 412 pupils were registered and this has now grown to 460. The only

application received has been from Colaiste Ghlór na Mara.” Sargent continued, “At present, pupils from Gaelscoileanna around the North County, including Gaelscoil Bhaile Bhrigín, Scoil an Duinninigh, Kinsealy, Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe, Swords, Scoil Ros Eo, Rush and Scoil Realt na Mara in Skerries have no secondary school outlet to pursue their education through Irish. Up to now, pupils from these schools have had to apply to secondary schools in the city centre or others, many miles away and not practicable,” he said. The new Gaelscoil will attract students from Ashbourne and Drogheda, as well as local children.” Ríona Ní Shúilleabháin, Deputy Principal, Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín told the County Leader, “In a number of years, there will be almost 1,700 children educated through the medium of Irish in the Gaelscoileanna in Balbriggan, Rush and Swords. There is currently no provision for second level Gaelscolaíocht in the North County area. Coláiste Ghlór na Mara hopes to fill that gap. Large numbers of parents whose children attend English speaking schools in the area have also expressed an interest in sending their children to Coláiste Ghlór na Mara. The school would also be a huge economic and cultural boost to the town,” she concluded.

Sargent said he received an email from a 12 year old local pupil, who is currently attending Gaelscoil Bhaile Bhrigín, who pleaded with the TD, “I will be going to Ardgillan Community College, but I would prefer to go to Colaiste Ghlór na Mara. If you can get it opened, I would be grateful,“ Thankfully, he won’t have to wait too long.

The children chose to write to friends or relatives and some letters were even posted

Important Meeting For Swords Traders Fingal Dublin Chamber is calling a meeting of all business owners, managers, traders and service providers in Swords to discuss how best to develop, improve and promote the commercial centre of Swords this Wednesday, 23rd at 8.30 am in the Carnegie Court Hotel, North Street, Swords. Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert told the County Leader, “This year we have a wonderful opportunity to have a week of festivities around the St Patrick’s Day Parade which is being organised by Swords le chéile with the support of the Chamber. At this meeting details of the Parade will be discussed and it is hoped to agree a programme of events for St Patrick’s week.

Swords has a wonderful town centre and we need to encourage more people to enjoy the attractive mix of shops, restaurants, bars and other commercial services on offer. Malahide School Awarded Fourth Green Flag Great news for St. Andrew’s National School, Malahide who have just been awarded their fourth Green Flag.

The school showed that they know how to travel Green by walking, cycling and park n’ striding to school last week instead of taking the car. The school has already achieved three Green Flags for their work on the themes of litter and waste, energy conservation and water conservation and have been doing a great job of informing parents and the wider community of the importance of travelling in a sustainable way. School Principal Trevor Richmond, told the County Leader, “We are lucky here in our school as our pupils are always very enthusiastic and have enjoyed being involved with the Green Flags we have achieved.

We are delighted we have achieved the fourth flag and it’s great have more reasons to celebrate the great efforts made by pupils, parents and teachers”. Socialist Party election candidate, Clare Daly has said that the pyrite problem rearing its head across the North County must be declared an emergency. “A national trust must be established to embark on the necessary remedial works as a matter of urgency,” she declared.

Cllr. Clare Daly Daly was speaking after the Council revealed that pyrite has been confirmed in estates in Rush and Balbriggan, as well as estates in Malahide and Kinsealy. She said, “It is clear that this problem is reaching emergency proportions. Many of the estates built during the Celtic Tiger and purchased at massively over-inflated prices, are now being found to have pyrite. Some of the structural problems are only now coming to light, having taken some years to develop.” Daly, who has hosted meetings with a specialist in this field said, “Residents have found that once the problem emerges, Homebond, the so-called structural guarantee set up by the Construction Industry Federation is very slow to respond. Residents are finding themselves kicked between the developers and quarry owners. In many instances these have folded.

Homebond itself doesn’t have a fraction of the funds necessary to deal with this problem. It is clear that this problem cannot be shouldered by homeowners ; they are the victims. It costs €70,000 on average to repair each house.” Daly continued, “This is a consequence of deregulation and the fact that the construction industry was allowed to regulate itself, therefore the state has to bear some of the responsibility. There should be an immediate programme of remedial works launched on an estate by estate basis, where unemployed construction workers and apprentices seeking to finish their training would be employed to get this work done.”

Daly pledged to ensure that all affected estates would be brought together in the coming months to be a powerful lobbying force for justice and the right to the safe enjoyment of their homes.

Intercultural Week At Oliver Plunkett’s Last week was Intercultural Week at Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School Malahide. Junior and Senior infants were involved in various projects through the week. The children and their families experimented with different cuisine from all over the world as a part of Intercultural Week. Last Friday morning the hall was a buzz with Junior and Senior infants, who were all excited as they all had songs to sing in different languages and from different countries. Miss Hudson’s class were first to perform and they sang the well known children’s song, ‘It’s a Small World’. Children from other classes sang world-wide songs including, the famous French song, ‘Alouette’, the well know Australian nursery rhyme, ‘Kookaburra’ (The Australian Kingfisher), and the children even sang the well known ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’. in Hungarian. Sixth class children danced and sang a traditional African song, ‘ Waka Waka’ (This Time For Africa), which was the official 2010 Fifa World Cup song. The children and teachers had the main hall looking amazing and decorated with traditional costumes, dolls, flags, dragons, lanterns and all sorts of souvenirs from around the world.

Landmark Anniversary For Donabate Ladies Donabate’s Ladybirds and Brownies pack celebrated their 25th anniversary on 15th February last, with an event, held in the Waterside Hotel. It was attended by families, past leaders and other local figures.

Founding member and “Brown Owl”, Kathleen Coscran, was presented with flowers as a token of appreciation from the two troupes. She spoke to the crowd of the the early beginnings of the Irish Girl Guides in Donabate.

“I rang the IGG, and they told me that there had already been an attempt to set up on the Donabate/Portrane peninsula before. This just made me more determined. It grew quite quickly. We used to hold the meetings on a Saturday afternoon.

Free Grow Your Own classes are starting back at Rolestown Garden Centre on Saturday 26th of February. This day will be an Open Day consisting of two sessions, 11.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 3.00pm and all are welcome.

The classes run for 10 weeks and you will be shown, step by step, how to prepare beds, how to sow seeds, plant vegetable plants to the final result.... harvesting the crops. The classes are an informative, friendly and fun introduction into the methods of growing vegetables and are hands on, so people can really see what its like to sow a seed or fill a hanging basket. There is also a vegetable garden at the Garden Centre, so class members can come in and compare the progress in their vegetable plots. Its so simply everyone should try it. The Old Schoolhouse Restaurant in Swords ticks all the boxes in this respect. This 18th century gem is tucked away on the banks of the Ward River at Coolbanagher, just yards from the bustling Main Street and specialises in the finest food and beverage anywhere in the North County.

Proprietor, Jason Lawlor, a native of Swords has been at the helm for the past three years, although the restaurant has been in the family for much longer. Originally built in 1846 as a National School, this iconic building served the Swords community as a school until 1982. It was then converted into a restaurant, keeping many of the original school features, which added greatly to its appeal. Jason said that “a complete refurbishment was carried out in 2005, whereby the pub and upstairs bar was added and the restaurant area extended.” The very intimate old

Elizabeth O’Hagan - Balscadden

Elizabeth O’Hagan from Balscadden is first up this year as a 2011 Dublin Rose contestant.

Elizabeth attended Balscadden National School and went on to Loreto Secondary School Balbriggan. She then went on to study at the Royal College of Surgeons, for four years and qualified as a pharmacist and is now doing an internship for a Masters in Pharmacology.

Elizabeth lives at home with her mother Geraldine, who is a dentist here in Swords and her father Pat who is an auctioneer and brother Jim has just finished a degree in science at Trinity College. Elizabeth's mum is from Tyrone and her dad is from Louth. She is a big Tyrone fan and really enjoys the banter with her friends who are Dublin fans when it comes Championship season.

She works in McNamaras Pharmacy in Swords. This girl has many talents and plays the piano and flute, she also performs at weddings with her friend Jane and they call themselves ‘Jane and Liz’, and they both enjoy this and sing. She is very passionate about sports and is a keen hockey player. She plays with Skerries Hockey Team and they are on a winning streak at the moment having just beaten Swords among other teams. Elizabeth told the County Leader, “ I used to love horse riding and entered into the All Ireland Tetrathlon championships. The competition includes four different sports, running, swimming, shooting and horse riding. The shooting is for fun, but I was the worst shooter in the competition and ended up joining a club to improve. I then ended up coming back after two years setting and new record in the competition. I travelled to Holland, Finland and other places competing and it was a great experience. I have also travelled to New York, on a J1 Visa which was a great experience. I was lucky as I got a job in a Pharmacy and also worked in a Diner. I made lots of friends and it was one of the best experiences of my life.” Elizabeth has done her fair share of fund-raising and volunteering, she has ran charity events for Concern and Focus Ireland while in school and college.

“Being involved in the Rose Of Tralee is a lifetime ambition for me. I have been watching it since I was a young girl and decided this year I was going to enter. I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to be a Rose and get involved with all the other girls. To be an ambassador for different charities is also something I really want to do and will give it my all.”

Next contestant up for the 2011 Dublin Rose is lovely nineteen year old Megan Montgomery from Skerries.

Megan lives at home with her mum Louise, dad Len, and brother Peter. Megan attended Réalt Na Mara, Gael Scoil and went on to Loreto Balbriggan. She is currently studying at Drogheda Instuite Of Further Education, studying nursing. Megan has a passion for helping people and wants to go on to do Geriatric Nursing in order to help the elderly. As a part of her training Megan does work experience in Rush Nursing Home every week.

Megan told the County leader, “ I absolutely love working at the nursing home, it’s really what I want to do. I really like working with the elderly people and hope to get more time there as my college time goes on. It’s a big challenge and I have had to sacrifice a lot to do it, but it’s what I want to do.

I had to give up hockey, which was a big part of my life and my family are involved in it too. My mum is the Treasurer of Skerries Hockey Club and organises many of the things there. I love hockey and think as a baby my folks gave me a hockey stick, which might explain my great love of the sport. I still go to see some of the matches as my friends are all involved, but at the moment I have to focus on what I want and be committed to that.” Megan’s eldest brother Conor works in the UK as a physicist. Her other brother Peter is in his final year of his degree in French. Megan’s family have been going to France every year and she has a big passion for this and has some French to help her along.

Megan’s grandmother Kay Brannigan hails from Tralee and is the proud mother of 10 children, 6 which are girls, she also has 29 grandchildren. Kay has always wanted one of her granddaughters to enter and she will have her dream come true this year, as the family watch the Rose of Tralee, with Kay, who has been living in Skerries for over 50 years.

Megan is big into fund-raising and volunteering and she has been involved in lots of fund-raising to aid many charities including cancer research. She is currently a volunteer with Prosper Fingal Skerries for almost three years now. “ I started going to Prosper once a week and doing activities with them. I then got to work in the centres with the services users and this really opened my eyes to a lot ot things and this is how I know what I’m getting myself into and really want it. Being involved in the Dublin Rose is a dream come true. Making friends and embracing this experience is a fantastic experience. It’s not even about winning, it’s about helping and it’s about getting involved in all the charities the festival helps. I’m so excited about the charity work that the committee has organised for us in the different localities throughout Dublin. I believe in following your dreams and not letting anything hold you back.”

Faye Mercedes Moran - Portmarnock Twenty year old Fay-Mercedes Moran from Portmarnock has been thinking about entering into the Dublin Rose for a long time now. Faye is the youngest of three children and lives at home with her mum, Ann, dad, Cindy (Vincent) and brother James, her sister Kate lives just down the road and they are a very close family. Faye attended St Marnock National School and then Portmarnock Community School. It’s been Faye’s dream to become a primary school teacher and she is very committed to her dream and didn’t want to waste any time after secondary school. She headed straight to college and started a degree in Education and Training in UCD and is now in her final year. Faye told the County Leader, “ I just got the results of my exams today and passed every one of them. I’m really happy about this.

Hopefully I’ll graduate with a degree at the end of this year and then I hope to go on to applying to do a post grad for a primary school teacher. I may have to go abroad to do this, so I’ll have to see what best options will be available then. I have always wanted to be a primary school teacher and I work in a crèche and Montessori at the moment in my free time. I love working with children. I love to keep busy and really enjoy brisk walks on the sea front with my sister’s dog Reggie who is a German Shepherd pup. I used to love Irish dancing when I was young and I enjoy watching the dancing.” Faye may be a young girl but she is well travelled and spent a month travelling through Thailand last year. While she was there here and her friends received a Scuba Diving Licence and she can’t wait to go diving again. A girl who loves the excitement and fun of life is also currently on TV in a show called ‘Take Me Out’, where girls can be one of the lucky ones to be picked to go on a date with a guy they like. However, Faye was giving no information away and we will have to wait for a couple of weeks to see how she gets on. Over the years Faye has been involved in volunteering and charity work. Her family regularly run events and fundraisers for the Hospice in Raheny and Blackrock and Faye does a lot of work to help out.“I was involved in a project called ‘Fighting Words’, and I went into schools and helped children who needed a little help with their reading, spelling and literacy. It was great to help the children and to see that I was able to make a difference to their education. I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to help out with the charities the Rose of Tralee work with. To be crowned the Dublin Rose would be an honour, I really enjoy the aspect of helping and being an ambassador for Dublin. I can’t wait for the campaign and meeting all the other girls and embracing this once in a life time chance”.

The Malahide and District Credit Union round of the Irish League of Credit Unions School’s quiz was held on February 7th last.

Eleven teams from local schools assembled in St Sylvester’s GAA club for the annual Quiz. St. Oliver Plunkett’s and St. Andrew’s were represented. Quizmaster for the evening, Stephen MacDonagh reported that the standard of answering was very high with a wide range of knowledge demonstrated by all teams.

At the end St. Oliver Plunkett School emerged victorious in both Junior and Senior grades and now go forward to Chapter stage which takes place in ALSAA early in March.

Skerries Set To Provide Exciting Finale To Rás Skerries. This year’s Rás is the 59th in its history and gets underway on Sunday May 22nd in Dunboyne, Co. Meath. It will then move counterclockwise around the country, and includes stage finishes in Portumna, Kilrush, Castleisland, Castletownbere, Blarney, Tramore and Kildare, before concluding in Skerries. The route for this annual cycling test covers 1,247 kilometres over eight days with 28 categorised climbs, three of which are first category ascents. The 133 kilometre eighth and final stage of this year’s race will pass through Naul and Black Hills en route to the now-customary crowd-thronged finale in

the eight stages, but the five category three climbs it features will keep things up in the air. The Hill of Allen comes very early on and could provoke a long break, then later the riders will tackle the ascents of Pluckhimin, Cross of the Cage, plus the Black Hills climb on each of the two 13.8 kilometre finishing circuits in Skerries.

As ever a huge crowd is anticipated at the seaside town, providing a fitting finale after eight days of battle.

How do you handle a telephone interview?

Writes Siobhán Kinsella The jobs market has changed fundamentally over the last number of years. The job hunt and route to your next role has also changed in addition to how you differentiate yourself from the competition.

You have done your company research and prepared a killer CV. You have reached the point you were working towards, the interview. The physical preparation you do prior to attending an interview has a huge physiological benefit. Putting on the suit, travelling the route and in my case the make up mask all help prepare you.

When you are advised that your interview will be by telephone it can be quite daunting!

Tips 1. Always use a landline number. Mobile phones can have 2nd calls coming through and coverage can be lost causing unnecessary distractions and nerves for you 2. Make sure you are in a quiet place. If you intend to do the call from home make sure the kids are not in the house 3. Take the time you normally would to study the job description 4. You can have your CV and the job description open in front of you 5. You can have a notepad and pen to take notes when questions are asked to ensure you have answered them fully 6. You can have a list of key accomplishments open in front of you 7. You can list your questions for the end of the interview as they occur to you Things to remember 1. Never eat, smoke or chew gum during a telephone interview 2. Never interrupt as the person does not have the benefit of seeing your body language or interest and can misinterpret

your eagerness as rudeness.

3. Remember the interviewer/s names (you can write them down!)

New Malahide Senior Youth Club Following on from the success of the recently opened Foróige youth club in Malahide, a group of volunteers have come together to establish a second club for older teenagers. The Senior Club is aimed at 4th to 6th year students in secondary school .

The club aims to provide a social

space for teenagers to come together to meet with their friends and get involved in a variety of activities to suit their interests. The club will open on Wednesday, 2nd March and run from 8.00pm until 9.30pm each week. It will operate in the Grove Lawn Tennis Clubhouse, Grove Road. The club will be run by a youth committee and volunteers from the local area. All teenagers from these years are invited to come along.

Credit Union National School Quiz The Swords and District level of the annual Credit Union Schools Quiz was held on Sunday 2nd February in Fingallians GAA Club. There was great support from family, teachers and friends for the 29 teams taking part. The level of knowledge and commitment demonstrated by the children was inspiring.
