Confusion Sparks Fears T

he dispute between Eirgrid and the residents of Rush intensified last week, when the company attempted to start its work on the controversial East West Interconnector. Eirgrid staff moved their machinery on to Channel Road, but were confronted by a very determined group of residents who blocked their progress. A large Garda presence ensured that there were no ugly scenes between residents and Eirgrid workers. Safety issues are still to the forefront among residents who are fearful of the dangers associated with the cables and they claim that Eirgrid have reneged on an agreement they made with the community. Resident, Mary Flanagan told the County Leader, “Eirgrid are in breach of an agreement with the community, which was witnessed by local representatives and TD’s. It was made with Dermot Byrne, CEO, Eirgrid and they said they would not come into the town and start work until a Health and Safety report findings were published. They are here now, before the report is issued and we are furious that they broke the agreement. Eirgrid know they are in breach of the contract, yet they are here today,” she concluded. Eirgrid have moved swiftly to deny this and say that the safety report was delivered two weeks ago. Project Director, John Fitzgerald told the County Leader, “Over the past three years we have endeavoured, in good faith, to deal with all of the questions and concerns put to us by residents, local elected representatives and by Rush Community Council. At the request of Rush Community Council, Minister

By Patrick Finnegan Ryan commissioned an independent report by an expert on the health impact of electromagnetic fields. This report confirmed what EirGrid have said to date, there is no health risk in relation to the East West Interconnector. He continued, “The people of Rush have nothing to fear from the interconnector. We would not be developing the interconnector, or using this technology, if there was a risk to a single person living anywhere along the route. This is proven technology which has been used in many other countries in similar residential areas.” This is the view echoed last week by Councillor Ciaran Byrne when he said, “Decent people in Rush have been misled into believing this cable will damage their children’s health. Such action as disrupting of cable laying is unjustified and there is no safety issue with this project. I would not support Eirgrid if I thought there was the slightest danger to health,” said Byrne. The current phase of the works in Rush involves duct installation and does not involve cable installation. The plastic ducts will be installed in trenches working at up to 30 metres per day. EirGrid is continuing to work with Rush Community Council to address other safety concerns they have in relation to the cable. John Fitzgerald said, “We remain absolutely committed to working with Rush Community Council to address their cable safety concerns and there is ample time to complete this report before the cable is Continued on page 19

Metro North Gets The Green Light Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has welcomed the announcement that Metro North has been secured in the Government’s National Recovery Plan (NRP). Kennedy told the County Leader, “I was pleased to see that the Metro North was confirmed in the National Recovery Plan. This kind of forward planning is to be welcomed.” Metro North is an

important means of transport, not just for commuters in the city but also for tourists and business people who will be able to use the link from the airport to the National Conference Centre and the city centre. “Metro North has the potential to be responsible for 4,000 direct jobs and 2,500 jobs during the construction phase and will be the biggest piece of infrastructure in the state. prepared a report for the County Council that indicated that Metro North will create an economic corridor which will generate 37,000 jobs along it. With an expected 30 million passengers a year, Metro North is an essential part of infrastructure for our economic

recovery.” “Now that the future of Metro North has been secured in the Government’s National Recovery Plan, it is anticipated that tenders will be accepted by the Government next Spring and work will begin in 2012,” concluded Kennedy.

Rubbish Tag Waiver May Be Binned By Bob McKenzie North County Social Welfare recipients could have to pay for bin tags under new plans being discussed by the Council. times. The County Manager is set to try and overturn the current waiver, but will face stern opposition from local councillors who feel that, yet again, the most vulnerable are the ones getting penalised. A proposal that all Social Welfare recipients get their annual refuse collection charges waived may see any revolt headed off. It’s likely that several local representatives will fight the decision at the Estimates meeting in December, where the council may have to back down and agree a compromise deal which may free some funds from the scheme without it’s total abolition.

The County Council have been successful in attempts to combat littering in the North County. They recently installed CCTV cameras at the bottle bank in Watery Lane, Swords. There had been an ongoing problem with illegal dumping at the bank. A total of 70 fines of €150 each, were issued to people who were caught. A spokesperson for the Council said, “Proper disposal of recycling and waste is everyone’s responsibility. Leaving anything beside a bottle bank is not recy-

cling, it’s littering and as such is liable to a €150 on the spot fine or court appearance. Litter left at bottle bank sites around the North County makes it unsightly and can cause inconvenience to people living in the neighbourhood. The message from the Council is clear, people should keep using their bottle banks to recycle their glass bottles and jars, but should not leave anything behind as doing so would leave them open to being fined. In addition to numerous bottle banks around the county, the Council provide an extensive range of recycling facilities at Estuary Recycling Centre, Swords”.

The Biggest Circulation Of

Hesitant Labour May Throw Seat Away By Patrick Finnegan The Labour Party seem to have decided that they can only win one seat at most in Dublin North in the upcoming General Election. At their selection convention to be held in Balbriggan, they will choose just one candidate. This decision has mystified local Labour councillor, Gerry McGuire, who has declared his candidacy. McGuire told the County Leader, “The opinion polls indicate that Labour can take two seats in the constituency. If Eamon Gilmore is to follow through on his ambition to be Taoiseach, he needs to have sufficient Dail deputies to ensure his election.” He also claimed that the Constituency Council of Dublin North recommended a minimum of two candidates should contest the election. McGuire continued, “It appears that the organisation committee are being undemoc-

RTE Show Comes To Balbriggan School The bright lights of the RTE cameras were in evidence at Balbriggan Community College last Tuesday, 23rd November. The purpose of the visit was to interview students and film football in action on the school grounds. Kevin Curran from Balbriggan Community College explained, “A ‘Futsal’ league has been running in the school since September, aided by the FAI and Sporting Fingal. The league’s popularity has seen a new initiative from the FAI and the Gardai to involve youngsters in soccer out of school hours and away from their normal club training.” Friday evenings in Balbriggan were chosen as the time to run the Futsal league for all the youths of Balbriggan. The All-Weather pitch at Glebe North was chosen as the venue. Numbers for the Late Night League were way beyond expectations in the first year, with a huge number of Balbriggan

ratic insofar as members are being ignored and this could lead to disharmony in the constituency. He also expressed his wish to be chosen as a potential Dail deputy. “I would dearly like to be chosen to represent Labour and I’m making myself available for selection as a candidate. Remember, Labour returned six councillors at the last local elections and these results, if replicated in a General Election would secure a second seat for Labour. In 1992, Sean Ryan secured about 14,000 first preference votes, Cllr. Gerry McGuire one of the largest in the entire country and he would have easily taken a second seat with surpluses. This shows that there is a strong Labour vote that needs to be brought out. He contends that Labour lost a seat at the last General teenagers taking part in the tournament. The tournament is part of a trend, where soccer has caught the imagination of the students at Balbriggan Community College. Last year, they won the Under 13 North East League and the Under 19 North East Cup, as well as seeing two other teams get to cup finals.

Election, by not having a candidate to cover both the north and south of the constituency. Fellow Labour hopeful, Cllr Ciaran Byrne was just as upbeat about the likelihood of securing a second seat. “I’m very strongly of the opinion that two should be selected as Labour is very strong in the North County. It is quite possible that Fianna Fail may lose both seats, as people are not stupid and will be afraid to return the same government again. I’m optimistic about my chances and I look to my colleagues to nominate me. I tell the truth and I am unpopular in places, like Rush, but as the truth energises people, it will be clear that I took an honest opinion. I don’t believe in con politics,” he concluded. It seems strange that Labour, with the wind at their backs should commit themselves to only one candidate, at a time when there is such an appetite for change. It may be argued in certain quarters that it reveals a soft centre to the party and could prove to be a fatal mistake to Mr Gilmore’s prospects of attaining the highest office.

North County Dublin’s

Pyrite Is Making Residents’ Lives Hell By Leslie Murphy The extent of the pyrite problem is only beginning to emerge across the North County, according to Councillor Clare Daly (SP). Daly has been dealing with residents in a number of estates in Balbriggan, Malahide and Rush where pyrite has been confirmed. She told the County Leader, “This is an absolute nightmare for residents and the saddest part is that the problem will not sort itself out. If pyrite has been identified in one part of an estate, the chances are it exists in other parts where the cracks have not yet emerged, but they will. Remedial works must be undertaken or the house will deteriorate. The issue cannot be ignored.” “It is truly criminal that a huge part of the problem is that builders, and quarry owners and Homebond, all seem to be hiding behind each other. Homebond was the guarantee put forward by the Construction Industry Federation when they were allowed by

N0.1

Fianna Fail to regulate themselves. But they only have funds of about €24 million behind them. This is nowhere near the cost it is going to take to rectify the problems in the houses.” “It costs about €70,000 to get the necessary works done, residents have to uproot themselves and their families for up to six months while it is undertaken. This is a massive problem. It is inconceivable that homeowners are supposed to pick up the tab for this. If the CIF has not got the funds, then those responsible should be tracked down. The householders are often in negative equity, with mortgage arrears, and demands for management fees, and now the government Cllr. Clare Daly wants to add a property tax. Householders have to wake up to this issue. There is probably no other way but to unite those affected estates together and develop a significant pressure group that will force this issue onto the agenda. We will be working towards that in a coordinated way across many areas in the coming weeks,” concluded Daly.

consumers were interviewed prior to the decision as part of the public consultation process. The review concluded that, although costs had not risen since 2008, income had decreased for drivers by around 30 per cent. Rivermeade Gratitude To Josie It was a sombre occasion last week for the residents of Rivermeade, St Margaret’s as the new mini-pitch facility was opened by Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni. Josie Donoghue, a well known member of the community had been working hard for a long time in order to get these facilities up and running. Unfortunately, due to ill health, Josie was unable to continue with the project. Local man Robert Burke took over the development and has been working very hard over the last few months to see the completion of the mini-pitches. Josie was involved with the youth in the area and after school activities which she helped to set up. On top of all this, Josie was very involved in the residents association and had many duties including administration and secretarial to mention a few. She established strong links with the County Council and was very well liked by everybody she knew and helped. Josie passed away before the project was completed but she will never be forgotten for the wonderful work she did in the community. The Rivermeade Residents Association have dedicated the new facility in her memory.

STEAKHOUSE

WINE BAR

Masters Of Top Cuisine In Swords We all look forward to visiting restaurants for that special occasion, or just to pamper the ones we love, but are unsure of the service, quality of food and value for money on offer. These doubts are put to one side by a visit to Masterson’s Steakhouse Restaurant on Swords’ Main Street, where you will be treated to a culinary experience which will live long in the memory. The restaurant, which is ideally situated on the Main Street, was established by owners, Robbie and Erica Masterson in May 2009. In this time, it has won the award of ‘Best Eating Establishment in Fingal’ at the recent

Excellence in Business Awards, surely a remarkable achievement for such a recently established premises. Robbie is very grateful to his many loyal customers for their support in winning this coveted award. Customers will be glad to hear that Robbie and his staff have decided to expand the restaurant to include a Piano Bar upstairs. This exciting extension of the restaurant with a bar and live music at weekends is sure to be popular with customers. This combination of Piano Bar and Wine Bar has its own unique atmosphere and provides customers with the same quality and service in an intimate setting. There is a very definite atmosphere in Masterson’s and it has a City centre feel to it. The presence of a Piano Bar is unique to Swords and gives customers variety. People who still want to enjoy the quality service and excellent cuisine in a quieter setting can now opt for the more moody sanctuary of the Piano Bar. As Robbie explained, “We have a particular atmosphere in our downstairs restaurant, and the Piano Bar upstairs will provide our customers with exactly the same high quality, but in a more intimate setting. Masterson’s philosophy is simple. They insist on quality food at the right price. This winning combination is reflected in their use of the highest quality food available. “We use

Proprietor, Robbie Masterson with Head Chef, Donal Doyle, pictured outside Masterson's on Main Street, Swords

the most expensive beef which is 100 per cent Hereford and is produced by only about 100 farmers in Ireland at the moment. We are also very conscious about the local economy and we always source our food locally and insist on supporting small businesses, particularly our neighbours here on the Main Street, where possible,” said Robbie. Customers can expect a wide variety of top class food in Masterson’s. House specialities include, ‘Steak on the Stone’, where diners can cook their meal to their own particular preference on a 400 degree lava stone. This is unique to the North County and is being imitated in some of the top city centre restaurants. Steaks are the house speciality, but their chicken and fish are also proving very popular. An example of the variety you can expect in Masterson’s is the availability of Barramundi on the menu. This is a delicious white fish, popular in Australia and South East Asia. It is a particularly mild and flavoursome fish, which is only available in two restaurants in the entire country and is typical of Robbie’s adventurous spirit. “Our chicken wings are also a particular favourite and our head chef, Donal Doyle, uses his own sauce and the recipe is a well kept secret. One particular American visitor was very anxious to find the recipe, but Donal was tight-lipped about it. Donal formerly worked in Picasso in Clontarf and Mulino’s in Raheny and is a very important member of our staff,” said Robbie. Delicious

sizzling prawns are served with garlic and chilli and are proving to be much sought after. Much thought has gone into the design of the interior of the restaurant and the impressive gallery of photographs on the wall immediately transport you to another world. The photographs all have a Hollywood theme and include icons of the Silver Screen, where the glitz and glamour of American movies are brought vividly to life, add dramatically to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Robbie explained, “We try to make sure that each customer leaves satisfied that they got value for their money. We try our best to ensure that our customers become repeat customers. We are very conscious of word of mouth testimonials, which has seen our customer base grow steadily,” he said. Robbie has a wide range of experience in the restaurant business and studied Hotel Management in Athlone, before serving his time in the renowned Ballymaloe House in Cork. He also worked in Steakhouses and Italian bistros in USA, and this provided a good background for the food served in Masterson’s. Robbie is a native of Swords and married his wife, Erica, a native of Lusk, last August. They intend to set up home in Lusk in the near future. There is an Early Bird Special from Monday to Thursday between 5:00pm and 7:30pm which will run until 16th December and will provide excellent value for money during this time. The restaurant is also available for Business Christmas lunches and, as places are limited, booking is essential. There will also be live music on New Year’s Eve which promises to be a great occasion, but early booking is also required for this event. The opening hours are from 10am to 11pm each day. The variety, quality and friendly service which awaits you in Masterson’s is a welcome addition to discerning diners in the North County and a visit to this excellently run restaurant should be included on everybody’s ‘to do’ list. You won’t be disappointed.

Get Your Letters In For Santa

Santa’s chief elf Bernard emailed us this picture of himself and Rudolph, the pair are nearly all set for Christmas!

Attention all the little boys and girls of the North County! If you have been good boys and girls this year and you want Santa to visit your house this Christmas, then read carefully. Santa Claus has chosen the North County Leader to be his special newspaper this year! Once again he wants the boys and girls of the North County to send their Christmas letters to the North County Leader newspaper. We will keep the thousands of letters safe for Santa before he comes dashing through the snow to collect them and bring them back to the North Pole so his elves can get working on them! Santa Claus and his elves are very busy this time of year but he has promised that he will reply to every letter sent to the North County Leader newspaper! Santa loves to read letters from the boys and girls of the North County while he’s relaxing in front of a warm fire at home in Lapland. He wants to remind you that he will only come to very good boys and girls and his elves will be watching out. Children should go to bed nice and early on Christmas Eve so Santa has time to deliver his presents. He says the children of the North County are extra special but he won’t come to anyone who has been bold! So children hurry up and write your letters. We will make sure Santa Claus gets your letter and he promises to write back to all the good boys and girls of the North County. You must include your name and address on the letter so Santa can reply. So if you want your letter to reach Santa safe and sound send it to the address below! Switching On Of Christmas Lights In Swords

A presentation was held at Donabate Golf Club last for golfing legend, Mary McKenna for over 40 years of club representation. Mary McKenna has had a glittering career with countless championships to her name and a medal for her years of success was presented to her on behalf of the club, by Minister for Sport and Tourism, Mary Hanafin. She is now Captain of the Great Britain and Ireland team that travelled to America this year for the Curtis Cup, the female equivalent of the Walker Cup. Pictured at the presentation are L-R, Donabate VicePresident, Pat McNeill, Michael Kennedy TD, Lady Captain, Anne Casey, Minister Mary Hanafin, Mary McKenna, Club President, Ciaran Kirwan, ILGU President, Anne Wallace and Ladies Vice-Captain, Pauline Pic: Liam Keegan Browne.

Fancy the chance of being a local celebrity, standing alongside Santa as you turn on the Christmas lights? That’s what is being offered to the children of the seaside town of Balbriggan and it’s open to all the town’s kids with entry forms available at the Town Hall in George’s Square. The lucky winner will be the centre of attention on December 4th as they produce the climax to an afternoon of festive fun which runs from 2.00pm to 6.00pm with the lights going on at 5 o’clock. There will be a Christmas Market and loads of family fun with face painting an absolute must before watching the arrival of Santa Claus, as the Main Street is pedestrianised for a few hours with local bands and community groups performing along Santa’s route to the Town Hall. If you are involved with a local community group in the area, then get in touch with the organisers at the Town Hall to book your place as part of the excitement. The cut off time for children applying to switch on the Christmas lights is at 4.00pm on Saturday December 4th.

On Monday, 15th November last, almost 100 spinning enthusiasts, including Dublin GAA stars Eamon Fennell and Malahide's own Sinead Aherne, gathered at Just Classes Fitness Studio in Malahide, in order to raise funds for suicide awareness. With almost €1,000 raised, the charity spin night was organised by Aidan Mahon from Just Classes and all proceeds from the €10 entry fee went straight to Pieta House, the centre for Suicide Awareness and Self-Harm. As part of Balbriggan and District Chamber of Commerce’s drive to create a more vibrant and dynamic business community in Balbriggan and district, a conference called,’The Economic Development of Balbriggan’ was held last Friday, 26th November in the Bracken Court Hotel. The conference was an opportunity for the County Council to showcase the current and future economic development plan for the town. The conference carried an interesting economic survey with the local Chamber taking feedback from conference about introducing a local currency to the town which would match the euro in value terms. The new currency could be just an electronic one, as opposed to a physical one and mirrors other successful schemes elsewhere in Europe. “We have had to do some creative thinking to come up with events and it’s vital that we pull together in these tough economic times to try and ensure that people know that Balbriggan is a desirable place to live and work,” event organiser, Zoe Nelson of Drive4life told the County Leader. President of the Balbriggan Chamber, Joe English was pleased with the response. He told the County Leader, “Today’s conference is targeted at the business community and local representatives who are key stakeholders in Balbriggan’s future prospects, economically and as a town. We are showcasing the county council’s development plan for the town and are hoping to make Balbriggan an economic hub for the North County”

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers

Temporary Vs Permanent Work Writes Siobhán Kinsella Our discussions to date have centred on beating the competition to get in front of a decision maker. We have looked at taking a targeted approach in who to apply to and your preparation for interview. Taking up temporary / contract work can give a prospective employer a preview of just how good you are. The Recruitment industry is normally about nine months ahead of what most people see in the economy. We therefore had a pleasure of feeling the recession well ahead of most; likewise we are now seeing an increase in activity despite what you read in the news. Most Irish small and medium companies (SME’s) cut their workforce

deeply when the recession hit and are now starting to need additional resources. They are now understandably very cautious about the future and the sustainability of any increased demand. Enter temporary and contract opportunities. If you are immediately available and your mindset is to only consider permanent opportunities, you are missing out hugely. Temporary and contract opportunities often present at a level lower than your capabilities, as the employer is considering what they NEED to get by. To you, this presents an opportunity to show them how your skills experience and commitment can make them more successful. I have placed hundreds of people in temporary / contract positions over the years who have taken these opportunities and used them to get far better permanent roles in the same companies. Temporary / contract work is a fantastic opportunity to network and to display your ability in a way your CV can’t. It can also be a catalyst for an employer to create a role to maximise on what

you bring to their company. Consider these positions as an opportunity to showcase yourself and your capabilities. Those that consider every situation as an opportunity to be maximised, are those who will survive and excel regardless of what is going on in the wider economy. Best of luck. Siobhan Kinsella is Manager of CPL and Flexsource Solutions with responsibility for the Fingal area. She is a Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce & Drinan Enterprise centre. was a great event for the community. She said, “I would like the thank Conrad Murray for hosting our launch night, to Tony Farrell for providing us with music, and thanks to the local businesses for contributing to the raffle,” she concluded. Local representatives, including TD’s Michael Kennedy and Trevor Sargent, Senator Brendan Ryan and Cllr Ciaran Byrne were present to support the launch. The Christmas cards and calendars are on sale in all local shops in Lusk at a small cost of €1. All the proceeds from the Christmas cards go towards the Lusk Tidy Towns effort next year.

The Christmas spirit was alive and kicking last Friday night week, 19th November, as Lusk Tidy Towns held the launch for their Christmas cards and calendars. There was a great turnout in the Top Shop, Lusk, as County Mayor, Ken Farrell gave a speech congratulating the Tidy Towns Committee for their work over the last 30 years. Michael Kennedy TD then read a poem by local man Leo Dunne, who had written the poem especially for the Lusk Tidy Towns Pictured at the launch of Lusk Tidy Towns Christmas Card and Calendar at launch night. The music of Abba will reverberate around Rush on Wednesday,15th of December, when Abba Forever will come to The Millbank Theatre. Their music is the most played on radio stations around the world and the musical, based on their lives is still packing them in, in The West End. Mamma Mia is a huge success and this terrific show, based in Spain, embarks on its third, sold out December tour of Ireland in a row. It had Abba fans dancing in the isles at festivals in Britain and Europe throughout the summer. So, make a date for a really great Christmas party night out. As the nights start drawing in and it seems to get darker that little bit earlier, as the days tick down towards the spring when the evenings begin to draw out from their winter stupour, it is a good time to review your home security. The cover of darkness combined with dodgy locks, gives burglars the opportunity to upset you

and probably blow your household insurance policy in replacing those treasured items now lost. It’s important for you and your family that you are always safe and that means being aware of your own security. Check your locks on doors, windows and ancillary places such as garden gates and garages. Make

sure they are secure and impregnable. Some of you may want to go further by perhaps installing motion detecting spotlights at the front and back of your home to deter, not only undesirable human visitors but also stray cats and dogs or confused wildlife. Garda Saves Drowning Man On Portmarnock Beach Probationary Garda Mark Keane, who is stationed at Malahide, bravely saved a man who had left psychiatric care without permission. The Gardai had to restrain him and pull him back from the sea. The man who is aged 67 has a history of psychiatric illness. The gardai were searching the Portmarnock area for the man and found him, despite high winds and the sea being very rough. The conditions were very bad, but despite this, Garda Keane went after the man at risk to his own life. Thanks to the bravery of Garda Keane the man is now back on medication and doing well.

Call For Swords Ambulance Service To Be Retained Deptuy Michael Kennedy (FF), has called on the County Council and Dublin City Council to ensure that funding for the Swords emergency ambulance service is maintained amid growing concerns over its survival. Kennedy told the County Leader, “The Swords Emergency Ambulance service currently responds to an average of 4800 to 5000 calls per year, and any cuts to this service would have serious consequences for this region. I am calling on the County Council and Dublin City Council’s Manager to ensure that that continued funding is provided for the emergency ambulance service in Swords for its 2011 budget”, concluded Kennedy. The Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) have been operating a full- time station in Swords since January 2007, at which time the Dublin City Manager decided to directly fund the provision of an extra emergency ambulance to be based at Swords Fire Station.

Confusion Still Reigns Over Eirgrid Safety Issues Contd. from page 1 installed in the ducts which will not take place until summer 2011” Residents are concerned about accidental damage to the cables. However, Eirgrid said, “If there was an accidental dig into the cable, the interconnector’s protection system would immediately sense the fault and disconnect it in 50 milliseconds.” Local resident, John Peppard spoke about the genuine fears that residents have and spoke about recommendations made by officials. “Any kind of pipes or cables were to be located away from houses, according to a government report,” said Peppard. Eirgrid concur with this and have empha-

sised, “While the Government’s Strategic Cable Routing Criteria state that cables should avoid

centres of population, this is to reduce traffic disruption and is absolutely not for health reasons.”

Observers told North County Leader that one way or another, this Mexican stand-off must be

addressed and it is evident that the community of Rush do not trust what Eirgrid are saying in relation to the health implica-

North County Dublin’s

Swords Lady Celebrates Her 102nd Birthday Continued from page 1 raising her children with her husband Frank. But with happy times also comes the sad times. Her husband Frank died in 1978 and no more than two years later, Katherine sadly lost her daughter Kathleen to breast cancer in 1980. “I was absolutely broken hearted,” she said. Pain like that never really goes away. But it was soon after that time that she decided to sell her home and move to Dublin to be closer to some of my family. She now lives in

Christmas began in Skerries last weekend and was a very moving and happy experience as a special project came to fruition. The Christmas Tree of Remembrance was lit up and Mass was celebrated for all those who are remembered on the tree and a book has been produced with all their names recorded on it. The locals enjoyed a great ceremony when the Hallelujah Chorus Choir performed and celebrations followed. Locals were treated to mince pies and mulled wine and a great evening’s entertainment. The Chamber of Commerce have backed a project that aims to give special thought to loved ones who have passed.

Serving North Dublin 7 Day Fitting Service

The Christmas Tree of Remembrance is at the centre of this year’s light display in the town. The 30 foot tree was erected outside the Church on Strand Street. Each light on the tree will have a special meaning to it, as it was lit in memory of deceased friends, neighbours and relatives of people from Skerries. The idea behind the Tree of Remembrance comes from Chamber committee member, Kay Coleman, who has had this dream for 13 years since her own mother died and now her idea has come to fruition. Light bulbs can be lit at a number of outlets in the town and the money raised will fund the replacement of the town’s ageing Christmas lights, with new LED lights that will see

up to 25 more Christmases in Skerries. Fran Tobin of Skerries Chamber, told the County Leader, “it’s been a big project and has been very successful. The Christmas lights were 15 years old and needed to be replaced on account of safety issues. The whole town has been outstanding in fund-raising, especially in this time of difficulty. Every local business has also contributed and a directory of all these businesses is to be posted in to 4,000 homes in the community. The Hallelujah Chorus Choir performed a very special song to celebrate the event and to honour the tree and the people it’s about.” Residents who wish to remember a special one can purchase a light for only €5 and will receive a card with their loved one’s name on it that can be sent as a card or kept for the family home as a souvenir.

Grant Aid For Balbriggan School Works Welcomed Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has welcomed the decision by An Tánaiste & Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan T.D. to grant funding to St. Teresa’s Primary School, Balbriggan. Welcoming the decision, Kennedy said, “I’m delighted to say the Tánaiste has approved funding for St. Teresa’s Primary School to replace windows and doors. Funding is also being granted to cover the insulation of roof and walls at the school. Many schools across the North County have benefited greatly from the Summer Works Scheme this year and funding for a number of important projects have also been granted to schools under the Contingency Approvals fund. The Building Unit of the Department of Education and Skills is in contact with the school regarding the amount of funding approved,” he concluded.

Sewer Project For Cloghran Begins TD Michael Kennedy (FF), has welcomed news that work on a sewer for Stockhole Lane and Cloghran has commenced. Kennedy told the County Leader, “I have been informed by the County Council that a project to design a sewer for Stockhole Lane is in the final stages of design. The planned sewer will run along the old Stockhole Lane from the Coachman’s Inn up the AUL Sports Complex on the Clonsaugh Road.” “Residents along the route will be given notice and connection forms in advance of construction works. The tender process is due to take place in the new year and construction is planned for sometime in April. I am confident that this will be welcome news to residents in the area ,” concluded Kennedy.
