Yes Minister Following his resounding General Election triumph last Friday, the people of Dublin North have given a clear message to Taoiseach elect, Enda Kenny. This message could not be clearer - the demand from the electorate to promote Dr James Reilly to the Ministry of Health. Fine Gael’s poll topper, Reilly is the people’s choice to fill this very contentious portfolio. Dublin North constituency has a long history of providing Government Ministers, including John Boland, Nora Owen, Ray Burke and most recently, Trevor Sargent as a Junior Minister. Indeed, the North County electorate have shown, through their resounding support for Reilly, that there is a great hunger and desire for this trend to continue. It is now up to Mr Kenny to deliver his gift to the people of the North County. - James Reilly must be promoted as Minister for Health. He is clearly the best man for the job. The area needs it and the electorate demands it. Reilly has very strong views on issues which will have a profound effect on the North County. His views on Metro North, for example, are well documented through many interviews in this newspaper. This has been a very thorny issue for many residents of the North County. They see the delivery of this vital piece of infrastructure as a guarantee that their children’s futures will be preserved. The hope is that it will kick start the economy, with the resultant recovery in the property market. The well documented boost to the local economy that will ensue, is sure to have been a factor in Reilly’s success last Friday. Happily, his dedication to the project is not in doubt. Clearly, the people of the North County see Reilly as the man most suitable to do so - but only as Minister. The push for Metro North seems to fit in well with Fine Gael’s 5 Point Plan, with the delivery of 100,000 jobs over five years, including Water and Broadband His passion to deliver quality service for the hard pressed North County residents does not stop at Metro North. He is equally committed to providing world class health service in the area. Schools will also benefit hugely with Reilly as Minister. He has spoken about the possibility of a hospital, medical college and university, as well as primary care centres for the area. As

By Patrick Finnegan Minister, his influence in improving schools, updating health care centres are what the electorate expect of him. He is clearly the man best positioned to improve the quality of life of our residents. His passion for local needs and requirements must be harnessed through a Ministry. It has been a tradition of all Taoisigh to reward their star performers with ministries, and the outstanding performance of Reilly is certain to be noticed. His experience as a practising doctor and a key player in Fine Gael’s radical new health care initiative, surely will be acknowledged by Mr Kenny. The Master Of Milverton Milverton National School, also known as Scoil Moibhi, in the townland of Balcunnin two miles from Skerries, dates back to 1902 and is a hub of life in an idyllic rural setting. The age of the school is in direct contrast to that of its dynamic 35 year old principal, Skerries native Johnny Tyndall. His passion for the school and particularly for his 94 pupils was palpable when I met him recently. This passion goes back to his own schooldays when an inspiring teacher ignited a fire within him. Shay McGuinness taught him in fourth class in Loughshinny National School. “He was just brilliant. I mean every day he did nature studies, history, music, sport. He brought us outside the classroom. You had to; you were in a small school. He didn’t have the resources that a big school had, but that wasn’t a disadvantage, you just used your imagination,” said Johnny. In a wonderful twist of fate, Johnny succeeded Shay as principal of Milverton in 2009. He believes the vacancy presented him with a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity, enabling him to continue teaching, in addition to undertaking the role of principal. Teaching was also in his blood. His mother Anne was

Caroline

Heffernan a teacher in Loughshinny National School which Johnny and his three siblings attended for much of their childhood. She became principal there in 1986, “but she would talk about the down side of teaching as well as the up side,” Johnny laughs. Wondering if this ever caused Johnny to waiver in his desire to become a teacher he laughs again. “No, but I took a while to achieve it. I didn’t get great points in the Leaving, so I went and did Arts in Maynooth, studying History and English.” In our points obsessed times, he took a circuitous route yet managed to clock up many impressive academic achievements before beginning his teaching career in Pope John Paul II School in Malahide in 2000. At that time, Johnny was the denim clad teacher the students coveted.

Skerries Woman Lands Top Role

Skerries-based, Claire O’ Callaghan, has landed the job of co-ordinating a highly influential national business membership network. She was unveiled as the network manager for the new Kanchi Network, which supports organisations to deliver value through the inclusion of people with disabilities in their business. Speaking at the launch, Claire O’Callaghan said: “I’m looking forward to driving this new initiative over the coming years, in my role as Network Manager. By placing a value on diversity and recognising the contribution people with disabilities make to our economy, local businesses can make a contribution to recovery.” She is a recent winner of Entrepreneur of the Year Network Ireland, added, “The Kanchi Network is an innovative network that provides Irish organisations, regardless of size, industry sector or expertise

with the tools they require to become an “Ability Company”, which is an organisation that embraces the disability business case and recognises and values people with disabilities as customers, talent, suppliers and members of their community. As a Fingal based businesswoman, I hope to encourage many Fingal based businesses to become actively involved.” Benefits of the Network include access to networking, knowledge, tools, consulting, training and recognition provided by Kanchi and its partnerships with disability and business experts. Pictured are Skerries-based Claire O’Callaghan, (second from the right), is pictured at the launch of the new business membership network with Sarah Kerrigan, Caroline Casey (second from left) Founder Kanchi and Feargal Kinsella, Senior Tax Manager BDO Simpson Xavier.

“Yeah, I used to wear jeans or combats and a t-shirt. I wouldn’t get away with that now,” he remarks, smartly dressed in beige chinos, a pale blue shirt and Shelbourne F.C. tie. ‘Well my role has changed and you have to have respect for the role.” Johnny’s attire reflects one of his many interests. He coaches the Under 15 Shelbourne football team, in addition to coaching the Under 15s in Skerries rugby club where he was very involved as a player. He contends that anybody who coaches kids does it because people put effort in with them and they want to give something back. Shay did it for me. I remember one time after school years ago, he had fifteen of us running down the road after him like a scene from Rocky.” Being a member of Skerries Rugby Club, living in the town and being a teacher in the area has never caused Johnny a problem with privacy. “No, no, not at all. I’d be known first as the person who grew up in Skerries, not the person who is the teacher. There was amazing goodwill out there when I got the job. I was stopped every day for about two months. He is well known for covering much more in class than just the specified curriculum. He engenders in his pupils a desire to engage with the world around them. Following the successful project on the Kingdom of Lesotho undertaken by five pupils from the school in March last year, they were fortunate to have a visit from the ambassador, Her Excellency, Mrs Mannette Ramaili and the first secretary, Mr. Nkhotha Machachmise. During our conversation, the younger children are preparing to go home and there is a pleasant hum coming from the brightly painted yard. Despite the yard being small, the students can play football there, an activity banned in many primary schools today. “The kids run and play chasing. If a

younger child falls the whole yard stops and the sixth class pupils take on a parenting role. There are obviously teachers there, but the kids have an automatic sense of community. There are 94 kids here and there could be five games of football going on at any one time. When the cricket season comes, they’re playing cricket. It’s exactly like it was when I was at school in Loughshinny. You played games with your mind. You don’t need much if you have a ball. The kids don’t need goal posts, they use the shelters...sometimes it’s like an assault course walking across the yard ducking footballs.” Later on as we look in through the glass door of the room shared by fifth and sixth class students ; it’s like stepping back in time. The wooden desks are for two, with idle inkwells and storage for books. Commenting on teaching fifth and sixth class together, less common now than in the past, Johnny believes it works well. “The fifth and sixth class curriculum goes hand in hand. What you start in fifth you finish in sixth, it’s no problem at all.” Asked where he sees himself in twenty years time, Johnny believes he’ll still be at Milverton. The symmetry of him taking over from Shay McGuinness, his childhood mentor, is never far from his mind. “There have only been three principals since 1955. Tom Keane took over in 1955, Shay in 1986 and myself in 2009, so they don’t change around too often. It’s daunting to think of twenty years time, but I’d like to keep the continuity and ethos Shay had and maintain the high academic standard Milverton has consistently achieved. It’s a small country school, there’s probably not many left in Dublin but if you keep the country school atmosphere you’re probably doing your job,” he says. As the end of our conversation approaches, the same happy chatter as before can be heard coming from the older students as they leave school for the weekend. Many wave in the window of the portacabin where we sit, familiar yet respectful, “Goodbye sir, goodbye Mr. Tyndall’. Despite his modest protestations to the contrary, there is little doubt that Johnny Tyndall is currently inspiring some of these same students to follow in his footsteps and perhaps in time become the next principal of this unique school.

Sad Death Of Well Known Balrothery School Principal Joe Madden, former principal of Balrothery National School sadly passed away last week aged 103. Well known, Joe was regarded by past pupils of the school as a Visionary and he was very tough, but fair. Joe was born in 1907 in Mountrath, Co. Laois and trained in St Patrick’s College of Education. He held positions in Wicklow, Galway and Kildare before arriving in Balrothery during the war in 1944. He took up the post as principal in the North County village in the old Penal Church. Lavatories facilities were poor, with outside toilets in the corner of the school yard. Despite this, the school

By Leslie Murphy built up a great reputation and pupils walked the two miles from Balbriggan to attend the school. Joe began to negotiate with the Parish Priest, Canon Hickey, and after lots of fundraising and hard work, a new three room school was built on a new site on the main road in 1949. A very high academic standard was consistently attained at the school and Joe’s love of the Irish language and music shone within the students who won countless prizes in both.

He organised school tours before they were even heard of and brought television as a teaching aid into the classroom in the early sixties. Not only was Joe an excellent and dedicated teacher, he was also a caring and compassionate man, who involved himself in the concerns of his pupils and their families. He was a founding member of the local golf club and was, for 40 years, an active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society. Joe is survived by his eight children, many grandchildren and relatives and will be remembered for his outstanding achievements throughout the communities of Balbriggan and Balrothery.

Pathway At Skerries Ballast Pit To Proceed There was terrific news for Skerries last week when the National Transport Authority confirmed that funding totalling €300,000 has been secured for the new pathway at the Ballast Pit in Skerries. This pathway, which will open up access to the Railway station is long overdue and will make a huge difference to people in the area. Local Councillor, Ciaran Byrne has advocated this pathway for many years,

has welcomed this ‘fantastic news’ for Skerries. Welcoming the news, Byrne said, “This is a tremendous outcome. I’m personally delighted because its a project I’ve worked on for the past three years and have pressed the County Council to deliver.” The existing access through the Ballast Pit is poorly lit and presents a safety hazard to those using it. The project will now go to tender and will be completed this summer.

Dennis Motors from March 4th and will be auctioned on-line, ahead of the Ireland v. England one-day international at Clontarf Cricket Club on 25th August. The auction is expected to attract significant attention from cricket fans across the world.

Local Events For Irish Guide Dogs For The Blind A novelty ‘Chase’ in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind was organised by friends of Billy McGrath, who is a long time supporter of Guide Dogs. The group meet in Gormley’s Pub in Garristown and are all from around the area. They called the event, ‘Cross Country Chase’ It started in Ballamudun at 1:30pm last Sunday 27th February, and followed a trail which took about two to three hours to complete. There was also a separate route for children. People gathered in The Fox Inn, Ashbourne, where registration took place and raffle tickets were sold. Meanwhile, a Poker Classic, also in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will take place in Gormley’s pub in Garristown on Friday, 11th March next. To make the game really interesting, a total of 49 players is required, with seven tables of seven, then a winner goes forward from each table to a final table of seven. The winner of that final table is the winner of the classic for that night. People pay to enter and the money goes to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. A raffle will be held, and donations of prizes for this raffle are always appreciated. To be part of the classic, please ring Billy McGrath on 086 2621543. It sounds like a great night, not to be missed and also supporting a really worthwhile cause.

Devastating Blow For Government Parties By Patrick Finnegan In an incredible day for politics in the North County, all three sitting Government TDs lost their seats. Michael Kennedy and Darragh O’Brien from Fianna Fail and Trevor Sargent, Green Party all lost their seats, as they felt the icy finger of judgement pointing at them. This decision by the electorate of Dublin North was reflected on a national level, with wholesale changes on the political landscape. There are certain things which we regard as sacrosanct and in situ as a right. The presence of an elected TD in Dublin North falls into this category. The idea of Dublin North without a Fianna Fail representative is

Michael Kennedy outlines his disappointment following his elimination from the electorial race.

The Biggest Circulation Of something that is hard to comprehend and well nigh unthinkable. This constituency has a long history of returning Fianna Fail deputies down through the years and Friday’s decision by the electorate will come as a complete shock to many. It was sad to see the demise of hard working TDs, like Kennedy and O’Brien who were tainted by the damaged brand that is Fianna Fail. Indeed, Michael Kennedy alluded to this in an exclusive post election interview with the County Leader last Saturday. “Many people asked me to campaign as an Independent, but I have been in Fianna Fail for the past 30 years, 20 of them as an elected representative. The electorate clearly wanted to punish the government and I was collateral damage” he said. When asked about his legacy, he replied, without hesitation, “Metro North. I was instrumental in ensuring that Metro North continued to Swords, as it was initially only intended to go as far as the airport.” In a very gracious and typical gesture by this fine politician, he said. “I want to wish Enda Kenny the best of luck. He took some stick, but he came through. I also want to wish all the incoming deputies the best of luck in bringing prosperity to the North County, he concluded. His colleague, Darragh O’Brien benefited from Kennedy’s transfers. It looked like he was in with a chance, but ultimately did not receive sufficient transfers to prevail. He was unavailable for comment when contacted on several occasions by the County Leader. Meanwhile, Trevor Sargent spoke about many achievements attributed to him, including schools, farmers markets and the setting up of a fish processing factory in Balbriggan as being among the highlights of this term serving the North County. “I will continue to act as a teacher for the community,” he said and he summed up the whole day very neatly by declaring that “Democracy is a fragile flower which must not be taken for granted.”

Balbriggan Public Realm Presentation By Bob McKenzie The Balbriggan Public Realm Plan Steering Group held a public presentation in the Town Hall on Wednesday 23rd February last. Over 100 people attended to hear the consultants appointed by the steering group, LOCI. They outlined draft strategies for short, medium and long term projects to enhance the appearance of Balbriggan town from improved streets to better public spaces. LOCI’s work builds on earlier consultation with a wide range of people and organisations including input from a public meeting and workshop held last October. The ongoing input of the people of Balbriggan into the preparation of the public realm plan is essential for the success of this project. Councillor Frank Snowe, Chairperson of the Steering Group stated “I am delighted that the people of Balbriggan turned out in such great numbers to view the presentation and actively participate in the question and answer session on the night. I would strongly urge people to see the proposals on display in the Town Hall and give their input into the process.” The town’s Chamber of Commerce are also backing the plan enthusiastically and they see it as a way of regenerating a sluggish local

5

economy. President of the Chamber, Joe English feels the plans must be implemented. “Its a fantastic milestone to have the plans on display. When we started this process which was to enliven the town, giving it a new heart and giving the traders a quality place to attract new business. The plan gives us as a town, a vision of what we can aspire to and it’s been fantastic to see the growing support for the plan over the last nine months. The plan gives us a working footprint to begin the evolution of a new town. How quickly that evolves and is delivered is for all the relevant agencies to get behind it,” he concluded. The proposals are now on display in the Town Hall until 9th March and submissions from the public are welcome. Submissions from the public can be left in the Town Hall.

Rolestown School Annual Night Out Rolestown National School parents committee will hold their annual social and fund-raising night at Rolestown Golf and Country Club Hotel on Saturday, March 12th at 8pm. Headache Continues At Fingal Independent The headache of falling sales at the Drogheda based Fingal Independent has received no sign of a let up. The latest Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) figures show a sharp decline in their circulation figures. The figures for the year ended December 2010, show that circulation deceased by over 15 per cent on the same period the previous year. This represents a huge blow for the hard pressed paper, with just 3,677 average weekly sales recorded at €2 per copy. The average weekly sales figures for the paper between June 2010 and December 2010 have shown a steady decline. The average sales for December were 3,434 per week. December is traditionally a crucial month for advertisers in the written media, with businesses endeavouring to get that vital cutting edge in the precious area of

advertising. This is an alarming drop in circulation, at a time when the population of the area is expanding steadily. Indeed, the decline in the Fingal Independent sales figures is practically a mirror image of the growth in population of the North County except in the opposite direction. Its sister paper, the Drogheda Independent has fared no better and has shown a similar decline in its average weekly figures, dropping from a June 2010 high of 7,491 to a low of 7,121 for December 2010. The steep drop in the Fingal Independent sales figures comes sharply into focus when the Average Net Circulation figures are compared. The average figure per week for December 2009, was 4,343, compared with the Average Net Circulation figure for 2010 which was 3,677, a drop of 666 which represents a decrease of 15.3 per cent. These figures come on the back of the demise of the Sunday Tribune, which went into receivership earlier this month.

Excellent Performance By Stamullen Taekwondo Club

Plans To Transform Portrane Hospital Gardens By Julie Murphy Transition Towns Donabate/ Portrane want the old gardens of St. Ita’s Hospital in Portrane to be used as a recreational facility for the community. The proposed plan for the gardens would mean that it is transformed into a garden or orchard space that would be used for education. The proposal was brought to the area committee meeting of the County Council by Cllr. Gerry McGuire on Thursday, 24th February last. The gardens pre-date the hospital

itself, and carry historical significance to the area. They were part of a farm that used to exists on the grounds. This farm provided food for the hospital. The land has been neglected, but the orchard still produces fruit every year, and so the committee feels that resurrecting this space would be of great benefit to the area. The group “aims to empower the local community to plan a sustainable future for the community”. They hope that this can be achieved without using oil as a resource. A car boot sale takes place every month outside Donabate Parish Hall. Recently, they have also arranged courses in setting up home businesses and home food production.

Stamullen Taekwondo Club had a very successful stint at the recent International A Class competition for WTF Taekwondo competition. The event was held on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of February and was the first competition for 2011. Stamullen Taekwondo sent over four players to compete at different weight levels, with two of them coming away with medals. Stamullen Taekwondo Instructor, Brian McKenna, was beaten on golden point against an international player for the Dutch team, while 18 year old, Shane Day from Malahide was unlucky in his weight category.

9

North County Newspaper

Shane Lynch, from Swords, fought his way through to the final in his weight and came away with a gold medal. Shane has been studying Taekwondo for three years and to attain a gold medal at an A Class tournament is a great achievement. Claire Toland, aged 16, from Stamullen, also fought her way through her weight category, which had a large number of entrants and made it through to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, Claire was beaten by a slim margin and picked up a bronze medal. She has been studying Taekwondo for four years and last year she competed in a number of international events. This year is looking promising already for these players.

Major Obstacle To Balbriggan Swimming Pool By Bob McKenzie The plan for a new Balbriggan swimming pool has hit a major hitch, despite planning permission being granted by An Bord Pleanala. The application was made by Balbriggan Rugby Club and the developers, Kingfisher, and all objections were rejected. The major stalling point was a condition imposed by the Council and upheld by the ruling, which means the much needed leisure facility cannot be completed until there has been an upgrade of the town's waste water collection and treatment network. The club says that they look forward to working alongside the council to bring the project closer to completion, but the truth is that in these austere, belt tightening times, it could be quite some time before the necessary upgrade is put in place to allow the completion of something which would be a

huge boost to the town. On the upside for the development, the fact that planning permission has been granted means the developers and the club can apply for a grant from central government almost immediately. The development would see a two storey clubhouse and a separate sports complex of similar dimensions being erected, which would contain a gym and sports hall with various facilities as well as a six lane, 25 metre swimming pool which would be a much welcomed and a well used community amenity.

Outstanding Malahide Principal Retires By Leslie Murphy The recent retirement of Mrs. Paddy McCarthy as principal of Pope John Paul's Primary School in Malahide, is sure to be greeted with sadness and regret. Born in Mallow Co.Cork, and was affectionately known as Paddy, a nick name that caught on. The ever popular Paddy was loved and respected by the hundreds of parents and students of the school, where she was principal for the past 15 years. In this time, she changed the face of one of the finest schools in the North County. Those who have had the pleasure of knowing her will be aware of the amazing work and the academic changes she has brought to Pope John Paul's School. She served as a teacher

St Teresa’s School Cleans Up St. Teresa's Primary School, Balbriggan have been busy again having just completed a Beach Clean on the local beach and thankfully the weather was kind for the task. Mr. Brennan and Mrs. McGuirk's class cleaned up. “The high point was finding the skeleton of what looked like a small shark. This caused quite a stir among the cleaners. However, the really disappointing bit was finding a bag of dirty nappies on the beach near the water,â€? said Green School Coordinator, SĂle Seery. “We removed these and other bits of rubbish and the Council offered to pick up the collected rubbish when we finished. Our Green Flag inspection was on Friday 18th and our Water Action Day was on the same day.

for 32 years and has decided to retire at a relatively young age. Paddy has been a part of many school initiatives during her principalship at the school, including four Green Flags, a wonderful achievement in itself, as well as an amazing vegetable garden and well adjusted students to mention a few of her achievements. Paddy told the County Leader, “It has been a challenging experience for me as it is in all secondary schools. I have really enjoyed being involved in this great school. My biggest concerns have always been the children and giving them the best standard of education in as comfortable an environment as possible. I have enjoyed being a part of Malahide both socially and academically. Seeing the children prepare for secondary school, encouraging them with the development of their skills and talents is also a high priority. I have had a great team of people behind me over the years, including all the staff and the Board of Management. I am very happy to see Mr Prendergast take over as the new principal and bring the school into the future. I haven't made any definite plans as of yet but I'm looking forward to retirement and a new chapter of my life. No doubt I will get into something else".

T

he National Show Centre in Cloghran provided the venue for the count centre for the Dublin North constituency last Saturday morning. From the time the first boxes were opened at precisely 9am, the air was filled with anticipation and excitement. This marked the opening of a tension filled, dramatic day that would ultimately determine who would represent us in the 31st Dail.

However, nobody present could possibly have guessed the drama and history that was about to unfold 13 hours later, as the election boxes for the Dublin North constituency were opened and the eagerly awaited count began. Tally men and women representing their particular contestants, positioned themselves with military precision, outside the rails, but directly in front of the counters as they unraveled the polling slips and proceeded to mark the No.1 votes for their man or woman. Initially, 33 boxes were opened from various location around the constituency, and by 9.30am, a definite trend was beginning to emerge. The somewhat surprising frontrunner was Socialist Party candidate, Clare Daly, campaigning under the United Left Alliance banner. Could she hang on, or was this just a minor blip.? Time would tell. Another definite trend was emerging in the shape of a poor opening salvo for the Fianna Fail candidates, Michael Kennedy and Darragh O’Brien. It was merely of passing interest at this stage, as nobody really cound te la tu ra ng co tenanced a collapse for Fianna Fail at this stage. They always mes Reilly is Ja t an ph m iu A tr rally and surely will again – after all this is Dublin North, Tom O'Leary r llo ci un Co by traditionally a Fianna Fail heartland. Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. By 11.00am, all boxes were opened and 77 per cent of them had been tallied. This revealed Fine Gael’s Dr James Reilly and Labour’s Brendan Ryan in pole position, with 20.5 per cent and 19.7 per cent respectively. Third place at this stage was Clare Daly on 15.4 per cent, followed by Alan Farrell of Fine Gael on an impressive 11.2 per cent. Now the Fianna Fail insiders were starting to contemplate the impossible. With O’Brien on 8.6 per cent and Kennedy languishing on a shocking 6.8 per cent, the unthinkable was now a definite reality – no Fianna Fail representatives in Dublin North for the first time. Suddenly the realisation that this was not just a General Election – there were livelihoods to be lost, as employees of deputies Kennedy and O’Brien, who had been employed on the basis of their careers as a TD, pondered their futures. The Fine Gael strategy of clever vote management had elevated Alan Farrell into contention and he was to be in direct competition with O’Brien for the fourth and final seat, as this dramatic day unfolded. There did not seem to be the same voting savvy between the Labour Party candidates, as Brendan Ryan challenged James Reilly for top spot. Labour’s other candidate, Tom Kelleher was struggling on a disappointing 6.5 per cent and was not a beneficiary of the same voting arrangement as Fine Gael. Still, A disappoint the possibility of two Fine Gael candidates being returned in this ed Trevor Sa rgent faces th constituency was fanciful. Wasn’t it.? the first count began at 12.45 pm. At this stage, the contestants entered the arena and both Reilly and Ryan had the confident air of expectancy about them. They resembled boxers who had clearly won their bouts, but could not celebrate until the referee raised their hands in triumph. Reilly would not have long to wait for his coronation. Returning Officer, Peter Whelan announced the result of the first count. This sparked a mini stampede, as Party activists and workers surrounded their man or woman ensuring they were in pole position to hoist their favourite on their shoulders at the announcement of their election to power The first count showed Reilly being elected with a total of 10,178 first preference votes. He was followed closely by Ryan on 9,809 votes, a mere 61 short of the quota of 9,870. The second count revealed Ryan as the chosen amid a flurry of excitement that he had succeeded his brother, Sean to high office. Two down and two to go. Reilly’s surplus was divided. Would Alan Farrell make it a really memorable day for Fine Gael in Dublin North, or had fate a more cruel hand to play?. Swords resident, Daly was her usual calm, assertive self and had that look of confidence and assurance about her. The feeling was that there was a good chance that she would be elected and that she would be the beneficiary of any backlash against the government party candidates. Time would determine her fate. She mixed easily with her 'adverGerry McGui saries.'She had now increased her vote to a total of 7875, following re, second fr om the left, the distribution of the surpluses of both Reilly and Ryan and the transcompares figu re s with tally m fers of defeated Independent candidate, Mark Harrold. It was now en and women before the fi apparent that both Tom Kelleher and Michael Kennedy were doomed. rst count. Trevor Sargent was polling reasonably steadily and was not without hope. With the elimination and distribution of the transfers of both Kelleher and Kennedy, a clearer picture emerged. Daly was now on 9,465, a mere 405 votes from glory. Darragh O’Brien was now back in the picture as he benefited to the tune of 2,479 votes from Kennedy transfers. Now surely normal service would be resumed and Fianna Fail would have their customary TD in Leinster House. This gave him a lead of 217over Farrell, as we entered the final stretch. The next candidate to be eliminated was Trevor Sargent, and his transfers decided the shape of the election for the constituency. Daly was now elected with a total of 11,172, comfortably exceeding the quota, and Sargent’s transfers along with Daly’s surplus gave Farrell a total of 9,159, ahead of O’Brien who finished with a total of 8,067. The election was now complete and an air of unreality hung over the count centre, as all present witnessed a seismic change in local politics, which was to be replicated on a national level. Ireland means we can cook healthy, tasty foods hassle free. Think themes, why not experiment with the different foods that are available to us in our local grocery shops and health stores. Adding herbs and spices to pasta, potatoes, meat and even vegetables can make wonderous difference to what you’re eating. Food also effects our bodies, making our metabolism speed up and causing us to feel full of energy. For those who train

regularly, they will know what food gives them energy and may also try to eliminate fat out of their diet. Adding peppers, chillies and spices to meals can not only impress the other family members, but can give us a kick start before we may go for a walk or to the gym.

who find exercise a chore and daunting, follow these simple steps to help you put a little spring in your step. Making the first step is the hardest and once you go for that first walk or swim, you’re on your way. Don’t think about what type of a walk or run you will do, just put your trainers on, wrap up according to the weather and just go. How about putting together a nice stir fry or casserole and once this is ready to cook, put it in the oven slow and for a stir fry have it ready to fry

up once you come back. Eating after exercise is good as your metabolism is going faster than normal and you will digest the food faster. It will also be an incentive for you to go if you know there is a nice healthy, well deserved meal waiting for you.

Twenty three year old Roisín Walsh from Swords has had her sights on becoming a Rose for a long time now. Roisín is a very talented young girl and there seems to be no end to her talents. Roisín loves to sing and dance and has spent her life following this dream and in the process she has helped lots of people on the way. She is the youngest of four children and lives at home with her mum, Sheila and dad, Frank, who she describes as the greatest parents in the world who have been so supportive to her. Roisíns’ Grandmother, Theresa passed away a few years ago, her wish was for Roisín to enter the Rose Of Tralee, so here she is this year a Rose at last. Roisín has a sister Adrienne, and two brother’s Fran and John who she describes as the best in the world, along with her dog Tyson a Jack Russell. Once Roisín completed her leaving certificate she went straight, into college to follow her dream to work at dancing and singing. She attended the ‘Bull Alley Theatre Training Company’ for five years where she studied hard and gained a lot of valuable experience. She has since been able to open up her own company with four friends she met while she was in college. Roisín and her fellow students were given a project in their last year of college, which was on cyber bullying. This was the start for these five talented young girls who have since been very successful with their company, ‘The Buzz Works Theatre Company’. Roisín told the County Leader, “Our idea really caught on and we now go to different primary and secondary schools around Ireland. Our aim is to bring awareness to bullying that can happen on the internet and we have helped a lot of children through. Once we go to the schools we perform a play and carry out work shops. We have been so successful and when we visit the schools, teachers and principals sit in to watch our work. We have also been approached by several school principals who have asked us to run workshops for parents and teachers. We have also recently run seminars through the LeChéile Trust “. But it doesn’t end there for Roisín as she also set up her own dancing school four years ago, called ‘Clones Theatre School’, which is in Clones, Co. Monaghan, she girl calls this ‘her baby’. She teaches on average 20 children every Sunday and doesn’t take a fee for this as she does it for the love of dancing and helping the children. She has also recently landed another job here in Swords in dance school, Steptacular where she is the manager. Roisín has also been playing the piano for the last seven years and loves to write her own music and she sings along to these tunes that she uses for her dance classes. “Being a Rose for me is an honour and I am so proud to be a part of this at last. I’m looking forward to embracing the experience and sharing it with my family and all I’m involved with through work and The Buzz Works, as it’s something to be so proud of. My motto in life is what goes around comes around and if you have to take a few steps back, be nice to people and it will come back to you.”

Next contestant up for the 2011 Dublin Rose is lovely Katie Connor. Katie lives at home in Portmarnock with her mum, Patricia and dad, Martin and her lovely dog, Daisy-Boo who is a Chitzu. Her dad Martin has been involved with Portmarnock Football Club for years and now coaches ‘The Little Kickers’ football club. Katie attended St Marnocks National School and went on to St Mary’s Secondary, Baldoyle. She is currently in her final year at Coláiste Mhuire, Marino, where she is studying for a B Ed Degree to fulfil her dream to become a primary school teacher. While at school, Katie has always loved to help out and she took part in a lot of the musical activities that went on. She played the part of Rizo in Grease, and took the lead role as Sarah Browne in the musical ‘Guys and Doll’s’. Katie loves to sing and was a part of the Portmarnock Musical Society for over five years, and has taken a break so she can concentrate on her studies. She was also involved in the National Performing Arts School, where she had voice training and was taught performance and acting skills. Katie is a big Gaelic fan and has attended the Gaeltacht in Galway five times. She was twice a Cinnire, which is a girl that looks after the pupils who may be new to the Gaeltacht experience. Katie has fund-raised in the past for Temple Street Children’s hospital and wants to do more to help out others. She is in placements at primary schools during her college term and was placed in St Michael’s House, Baldoyle last year. While she was at St Michael’s she acted as a special needs teacher and the class she helped in was the non verbal unit. Katie told the County Leader, “ It was very different work there but it was amazing. I worked with six children and when I got my Christmas holidays, I returned to volunteer with them and hope to do more work there when I’m finished college. My heart is set on being a primary school teacher and these placements are helping me to decide what field of teaching will suit me best. My next placement is in Swords in the Holy Family School, River Valley”. Katie describes her sister Sarah who is 24 as her best friend and even though she moved out recently, she misses her a lot. Being the only one at home also has it’s advantages and her mum Patricia loves to keep her daughter healthy and prepares some great healthy meals for her. It was Sarah and Patricia who entered her into the Dublin Rose. “I’m so glad that I’m doing it even though it was a surprise when I was entered initially. This is a great chance for me to learn new things and I’m definitely open to it, and am so honoured to be a Rose and do my bit to help all out. My motto in life is aim high and don’t let any chance pass you by”.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers

What are job alerts? Writes Siobhán Kinsella When searching for a role we have discussed that it is vital to understand your own priorities. These range from location V’s salary to multinational to SME. When you have completed this exercise it is advisable to log on to each of the major job sites: jobs.ie, monster.ie, loadzajobs.ie. Each of these sites have a function called job alerts which is hugely efficient. These functions allow you to choose the location, type job and source you are interested in. You can choose whether you wish to be immediately notified about employer only jobs that meet your criteria or agency also. I would suggest that you invest a significant amount of time on determining your criteria or you

will only receive notifications of jobs that are not relevant. That can be quite frustrating, but the garbage in garbage out rule does apply! I have also previously advised that you set up a linked in profile if you are in a supervisory position or above. A little known fact is that more employers are now listing their company profiles and vacancies on Linkedin. Please bear in mind that it is predominately Multinationals or large Indigenous companies who are the fastest growing population on Linkedin. Smaller organisations are slower to use this format. Linkedin is very clever in this regard as the roles that you see suggested are matched to you using keywords from your profile. It is therefore very well worthwhile investing time in ensuring your profile is 100% complete and reflects your level of professional achievement accurately. Some of you will be aware that you can also upload your CV to the job boards mentioned above. I would not advise you do this unless you are immediately available. Also if you intend to use this service ensure your references are listed as “available upon request”.

Any company who has paid their CV search subscription can download your details. You can have recruitment agencies to your current employer viewing your details so forewarned is forearmed. Investing time cleverly in ensuring your information and search criteria are correct can pay huge dividends so it is well worth doing. The best of luck Siobhan Kinsella is Manager of CPL and Flexsource Solutions with responsibility for the Fingal area. She is a Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce & Drinan Enterprise centre. Siobhan is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal

Uganda Charity Seeks Volunteers The A-Z Children’s Charity launched its new exciting project, “The Uganda Adventure Build” on Thursday 24th February last at The National Boxing Stadium. A-Z ambassador and Olympic Silver medalist, Kenny Egan took time out from his gruelling training schedule to launch the project. The A-Z children’s charity is an Irish founded, non-profit organisation which was established to provide a better quality of life for orphans and vulnerable children living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. They are trying to combat the heartbreaking statistic in Uganda in which four out of five children infected with HIV die before their fifth birthday. The Uganda Adventure Build are searching for 10 enthusiastic, motivated and adaptable individuals to travel to Uganda from the 7th to 19th of August next. These volunteers will spend the first week of their trip building a home for one of the most vulnerable families on the A-Z HIV treatment project. Last year, Kenny Egan and a team of volunteers built a home for Navueya Theresa, an inspirational local woman who has an astonishing 15 orphans in her care. For the second week, these lucky 10 people will get to explore Africa like never before. They will experience Africa on foot, on 4x4 and from the water, enjoying authentic interactions with locals and indigenous groups. This is the real Africa, as insiders know it. They will go on safari, where they will not only be struck by the mind blowing scenery, they will be exposed to animals others have only imagined from the tv. If this isn’t enough to get their heart racing, they will finish of their 12 day adventure with an adrenaline filled water rafting stay over, down the Nile. For further information call Kimberly Ward at 0851194327.
